I love to ride trains. My great-grandparents saw travel evolve from horse-drawn carriages to electric street cars, urban subways, and passenger trains.

Today, we seek fast travel by jet or a sleek car, but what about turning back the clock to railroad transit and passenger trains? There is something about the golden age of train travel that’s fun for all ages. It’s a time to slow down, relax, and let the landscape flow past us. Let’s explore train rides in Texas, great fun for the whole family. All aboard!

5 Epic Train Rides In Texas for an Amazing Experience

1. palestine to rusk, texas state railroad.

Step aboard a refurbished train car at the Texas State Railroad and feel like you have stepped back in time 100 years, where time slows down and tensions disappear. Relax and enjoy a 4-hour roundtrip train excursion from Palestine to Rusk and back, with vintage steam and diesel locomotives gliding through the piney woods of East Texas as the fall leaves begin to turn shades of golds, oranges, yellows, and reds.

At the depot, learn about the railroad communities, savor a bite to eat with family at the Rusk Mail Car Cafe, and shop the gifts and keepsakes at Roundhouse 1909 in Palestine. Ride comfortably, enjoy a historical narrative, meet friendly and entertaining staff, and sample food and adult beverages on your journey. The four-hour train ride breaks down to a 1.5-hour 25-mile trip to the destination depot, a one-hour lunchtime, and a 1.5-hour return trip.

In October, the Pumpkin Patch Express leaves from Rusk, a 30-minute round trip train ride, including hayrides, spooky music, a bounce house, concessions, and trick-or-treating on Trick or Treat Street. Each child picks out a pumpkin to take home for carving. Fall is a fabulous time to take a train trip through the U.S .

Make reservations now for the Polar Express for November and December. The Presidential Class car seating is limited where a ride with Santa, keepsake Polar Express mugs, hot chocolate, and cookies make for a magical experience.

Camping facilities at the Rusk Campground offer a stay onsite at a historic railroad, with access to depot amenities including lunch, gift shop, and movie theater access on train departure days. Movies filmed on the Texas State Railroad are featured, with stars like Denzel Washington, George Clooney, John Goodman, and Sam Elliot.

This was definitely one of my favorite U.S. train rides .

2. Cedar Park To Burnet

Austin steam train association.

All aboard! Take the historic 6-hour, 66-mile roundtrip Hill Country Flyer from Cedar Park, north of Austin, and just east of Lake Travis, to Burnet with a brief layover there for lunch and shopping. There are at least four classes of service : excursion coach, first-class coach, first-class lounge, and adults-only first-class lounge.

The Bertram Flyer is a shorter trip, traveling from Cedar Park to Bertram, with a 15-minute layover in Bertram and enough time to tour the 1912 train depot there. The train runs from March through November on Saturdays and Sundays.

The North Pole Flyer 2021 with Santa leaves from Bertram and is a 2-hour roundtrip. Arrive at least 30 to 45 minutes before departure and be in your seat no later than 10 minutes before the train leaves. Read the Terms and Conditions about no refunds and restrictions.

Enjoy hot chocolate and the elf’s reading of the North Pole Flyer book.

In April, ride The Jazz Wine Train aboard the 1920s Victorian coaches with soulful jazz entertainment while sipping great Grapevine wine. Enjoy hors d’oeuvres plus a dessert trio box. Sip wine from several winery tasting rooms from a souvenir wine glass.

Bring the little ones for a Day Out With Thomas , presented by Mattel. Ride the train with the classic storybook engine and have fun with “trains, games & miles of smiles!”

Mattel and the Museum of the American Railroad helped sponsor this event. I took my grandchildren for a train ride right after Christmas on the Grapevine Railroad Stockyards Trinity River Excursion . We traveled from the Historic Fort Worth Stockyards, through Trinity Park to the 8th Avenue historic railyard, then returned to the stockyards.

You’ll see the Great Train Heist, with greedy outlaws and the railroad detectives close behind.

There are more attractions to enjoy en route than we could ever list and is one of the best train trips in Texas.

Private Rail Cars: America’s Luxury Train Travel

luxury train travel in private rail cars. You can do it!

U.S. Luxury Train Travel is Here…with your own Private Rail Cars

Can you believe this bedroom is on a train? Private railroad cars make U.S. luxury train travel USA a reality.

By Jennifer Bellenoit Updated December 2021

After Covid-19 induced delays, Private Train Journeys start in June 2023!

Remember when trains were the most popular means of travel? Remember the romance of the exquisite finishing of a rail car seen in old black and white movies?

The slow chugging rhythms of the locomotive? The deep lull of the wheels running over the tracks? These private train cars are luxury hotels on rails!

Today, luxury train travel in the US appears to exist as a memory. Unless you’re North Korea’s Kim Jong-Un and own a private train, you can’t ride in your own train car. Until now.

Meet America’s Trains.

Luxury Train Travel USA: Like the Olden Days in Private Rail Cars

America’s Trains Inc is offering guests the same luxury travel and private rail cars that used to be reserved for only the wealthiest of Americans.

You can travel between many popular cities throughout the U.S. and into Canada, with many more to come.

Barry Jones from America’s Trains stated that “present demand already ensures that full occupancy will probably occur, keeping in mind that the relatively long average lead time between when a Journey passenger makes a reservation and the departure date, is over eight months.”

The trips aren’t cheap, but they are a serious throwback to the grand old days of railroad travel. You’ll feel like a robber baron in one of your own luxury private train cars!

The Sunflower, a double-decker private rail car with only four exquisite bedrooms, offers five to seven night rail Journeys in private rail cars

Amtrak Train Sets

The train cars are part of Amtrak trains. They include “Train Sets” which are multiple cars traveling together that provide bedrooms, gourmet meals, lounge, and bar facilities. America’s Trains provide Private Cars that include up to four bedrooms, dining, and lounge facilities that operate as part of the Train Sets or just alone.

More than Repainted

America’s Trains rail cars are not older units with new paint and furniture, by the way. They are fully rebuilt, redesigned, and refurbished to exceed Amtrak’s mechanical specifications and to meet the desires of discriminating luxury consumers.

“We are not trying to replicate antiquated capabilities that were in vogue when trail travel was at its peak. Instead, the best of these features are combined with modern conveniences and systems that make the cars the best in America and equal to the world’s finest,” Barry said.

America's Trains offer private railcars for a spectacular luxury rail journey. America's Trains photos.

Train’Share, as in Timeshare

America’s Trains offer two methods of travel which include individual, all-inclusive Journeys by Rail (typical commercial train vacations) and Train’Shares (rail car timeshares). Train’Share travelers have the option to reserve trips on a timeshare basis which “makes up one of the fastest-growing segments of leisure travel,” according to Jones.

Guests have the option to take the journey by Rail vacations at a lower cost than individual Journey vacation passengers or passengers on comparable foreign luxury trains (there are no others in the USA). They also have the option to exchange a Journey (train vacation) for a vacation at a wide selection of the world’s best resorts. You can even exchange them for a cruise.

Dining in style on a private rail car from Trainshares, luxury train travel USA.

Perpetual Term Option

According to America’s Trains website , Train’Share buyers can purchase a “perpetual term” for never-ending additional years or an “initial term” of 10 years.

Some of the best Journey by Rail benefits include on route layovers where passengers live on board the luxurious rail cars while enjoying nearby hosted and optional attractions without have to move to and from hotels.

There are also special events and parties, pre-and post-land vacation opportunities, a selection of routes, an owner’s newsletter, special predetermined preferences such as activities, and complimentary drinks, including alcoholic beverages.

Choosing Your Own Routes

Individual Journey and Train’Share owner passengers that reserve all the rooms on a Car have the opportunity to choose the destinations and routes.

Train’Share owners also become a member of the Train’Share Association which gives owners more benefits such as train, rail, and travel-related items at discounted prices, an owner’s newsletter, preferred complimentary beverage brands of all kinds, and special predetermined preferences such as activities and menus.

Unlike traditional timeshares, Train’Share owners don’t have to pay fees if a scheduled journey by Rail is not used and America’s Trains will buy the Train’Share back without financial loss to the owner.

Visit their website for a more in-depth list of the benefits.

Train Car Options

America’s Trains’ first train sets will include up to three Cars with about 13 rooms, all with full bathrooms and private showers. There are usually two people in a room, some with a third bed. The Train sets are kept small to accommodate passengers’ activities such as lectures, cooking classes, dancing, table games, and other small group activities.

According to Jones, a significant advantage to the small number on board is “the rapport and camaraderie that occurs when a small group of like-minded travelers gets together.”

Or, if you desire a completely private experience, you can reserve all of the bedrooms in a Car. For example, the two-level Sunflower with Private Rail Cars includes two or three four-high category double rooms, a lounge, dining room, and kitchen.

All three bedrooms have private bathrooms with showers. Private cars have separate crew quarters and travel with two or three crew members, a porter or a steward or both. Up to eight passengers can occupy the car. Private cars do not cater to children.

Relax in your own private living room on a private rail car.

Dining on the Rails

Guests will be spoiled rotten by the fine dining. With an impeccable staff, ready to meet every personalized need, you will be served the finest and healthiest North American cuisine with fresh, local ingredients.

Guests even have the option to request special menus and beverages before departure. The trains are usually open dining seating, or you can make a reservation. Lighter dining is available in the lounge and bar areas.

Sleeping on board America’s Trains

Fully equipped with comfy pillows, fine linens, and hair dryers, the rooms also come with personal 24-hour on-call steward service. The beds are either king or extra-large queens with plenty of room.

The rooms are not your typical sleeper car. Due to the small group advantages, more detail is provided by the crew to ensure you the best possible comfort.

Private Rail Car Cost

Typical journeys will be from six to eight-day trips across the U.S. from Texas to New Orleans featuring layovers in Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston, and New Orleans, quickly followed by more trips in the future, according to Barry Jones of America’s Trains.

Post Covid-19 routes are described on the Americantrainvacations.com website. Trips will begin in June 2023 but reservations can be made now.

Featuring layovers in Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston, and New Orleans

Per person, double occupancy per bedroom (except singles):

Grande Suite $7,087 – Master Suite $6,641 – Deluxe Double – $6,195 Classic double (upper and lower beds) – $5,750 Single passenger: 175% of double occupancy per person fare 3rd passenger: If available – $700

The Canyonlands is one of the sights to see out the window of your private train car

Early confirmed booking/reservation discounts: 210 or more days in advance 16% – 175 days 11% – 140 days 8% – 105 days 5% rounded to the nearest $100

Journeys and Routes on America’s Trains

America's Trains' Dome cars have 2 Master Suites or 3 Deluxe Double bedrooms, a full kitchen, a dining area, and lounges that include an upper level which is about 30% the length of the car. When improvements are complete on the first dome car, the Hibiscus, it will operate alone until the next sleeping car is ready for service.

There will be nine active routes and 13 more are within a few years. A typical train vacation is a week long. Similar to a cruise vacation, Journeys by Rail offer “ports of call” layovers which allow guests to disembark and explore the museums of Washington D.C or enjoy the vastness of the Grand Canyon .

Ports of call vary from more than a full day down to about eight hours and are designed to ensure that passengers have enough time to fully enjoy each point of interest.

Most of the routes are one-way and guests are responsible for airfares to these ports. However, arrangements are made for connecting travel via Amtrak train where appropriate.

Some routes do return to the original port. The Canadian International Falls route will depart from Washington D.C and makes stops in Niagara Falls, Toronto, and Buffalo before returning to Washington D.C as its final destination.

Future Private Rail Car Train Trip Journeys in 2023

An example of a route is Journey  Southwestern Eastbound which departs from Los Angeles and ends in Chicago on Day 8.

At 6:40 pm the train leaves and by Day 2 at 12:40 pm, you are staring into the natural wonders and beautiful scenery of the Grand Canyon .

After an overnight in the Grand Canyon, the train departs for an overnight in Williams AZ at 4:30 pm.

Day 4 consists of an overnight exploring the southwest city of Albuquerque before departing for Kansas City on Day 5. During this day, the train will pass through the jagged, snow topped hills of the Rockies and eventually make its way to the smooth, vast prairie lands of Kansas.

Guests will have the opportunity to view the wonders of the west from the comforts of the gentle moving train in their private rail cars. This is why train travel is the best way to see America. After an overnight in Kansas City, the train will depart for its final destination: Chicago .

2023 Journey Fares

Fort Worth to New Orleans  – 8 Days and 7 Nights,

Per person, double occupancy per bedroom (except singles): Grande Suite $7,087 – Master Suite $6,641 – Deluxe Double – $6,195 Classic double (upper and lower beds) – $5,750

Single passenger:  175% of double occupancy per person fare 3rd passenger:  If available – $700

Discounts apply to the prices above when booked significantly ahead of departure. Although the costs may appear a bit pricey, the journey fares are much lower than comparable luxury with comparable foreign luxury train vacations.

There are no equivalent rail vacations in the USA. By selecting America’s Trains Train’Share basis, the price of a Journey is about 1/3 of the normal commercial Journey fares.

See America’s Trains website for a comparison of prices. The company prefers to have customers call and arrange the trips, as it’s very personalized.

Some things remain during a weak economy: dining, movies and especially now, travel. The small number of and low passenger density on each Journey by Rail vacation allows polite preclusion of passengers that may have a contagious illness and are the only way to fully experience America’s grandeur, history, diversity, and natural attractions, says Jones.

Train vacations interest in foreign luxury train vacations exceeds demand as more affluent consumers reaffirm significant interest in the unique experiences that they offer.” Many Layovers

Although en-route destination layovers provide endless enjoyable off-car things to do, it is not the destination but the journey itself that makes a train vacation in a private rail car more than special.

Within several years America’s Trains fleet of cars will grow to include about 29 standard passenger cars that travel as part of different train sets.

They offer from 1 up to 5 cars, plus several self-sufficient private cars with 2 or 3 bedrooms that can travel alone or with a train set, and a few activity cars that travel with trains sets to provide special entertainment and events.

Cars have common interior characteristics, but each has unique luxurious features. They are all named after flowers.

Some things remain during a weak economy: dining, movies, and especially now, travel. Train vacations have always stood firm as the best way to see America, says Jones. Train vacations have “strengthened among more affluent consumers and reaffirms significant interest in the type of vacations being offered.”

It is definitely not the destination but the journey itself that makes it worthwhile.

Texas Scenic Train Rides (2024): A Complete Guide

Last revised: December 14, 2023

By:  Adam Burns

Texas is big.  Its 268,597 square miles ranks second among all 50 states (Alaska ranks first at 663,267 square miles) and first within the Lower 48.

Its vast size, abundance of natural resources, and coastal ports resulted in a booming economy that attracted a multitude of railroads, and even more people.

In his book " The Routledge Historical Atlas Of The American Railroads ," author and historian John F. Stover notes its mileage peaked at 16,125 in 1920, another first.

In railroading's classic age, many famous flags served the Lonestar State including the Santa Fe; Chicago, Burlington & Quincy; Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific; Missouri Pacific; Southern Pacific; Missouri-Kansas-Texas; St. Louis-San Francisco Railway; and St. Louis Southwestern Railway ("Cotton Belt").

Today, there are a handful of great organizations offering scenic train rides throughout Texas thanks to its rich heritage.

Depending on your interest you can see historic steam and diesel locomotives as well as trolleys in operation.

The state's busiest and most popular is the Texas State Railroad, which hosts a multitude excursions and numerous special events throughout the year.

State Rail History

Due to a lack of eastern connections, railroads in Texas did not appear until the early 1850's.

This was typical in the states and territories west of the Mississippi River where such operations were largely only local in nature.

Texas's first is recognized as the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos, & Colorado Railway (BBB&C) chartered on February 11, 1850.

According to the Texas State Historical Association the project was led by General Sidney Sherman who wanted to link the Buffalo Bayou (a river passing through Houston which empties into Burnet Bay/Galveston Bay) with the Colorado River.

Also known as the Harrisburg Railroad, the BBB&C began construction from Harrisburg in 1851.  By August of 1853, 21 miles was open to Stafford's Point.

Over the course of the next seven years work proceeded slowly westward until crews had reached Alleyton, along the east bank of the Colorado River, by 1860.

Due to the Civil War's outbreak no further construction took place for several years.  Finally, in November, 1867 the BBB&C was able to reach Columbus, across the Colorado River, thanks to a 3 mile line built by the citizens of that town.

luxury train travel texas

The railroad always struggled financially and was eventually sold at foreclosure on July 7, 1868.  It was sold again on January 24, 1870 and renamed as the Galveston, Harrisburg, & San Antonio Railway.

Under its new title the GH&SA abandoned attempts to reach Austin and instead sought a due west approach into San Antonio.

In addition, as early as 1878, Collis P. Huntington, which led the Southern Pacific extending eastward from California, sought acquisition of the GH&SA to reach Texas (he officially took over the property on July 1, 1881).

According to the book, " Southern Pacific Railroad ," by Brian Solomon, the Southern Pacific arrived in El Paso by May 19, 1881.

Under SP's control the GH&SA was extended throughout Texas reaching such points as Galveston and Houston.  Along with through corridors several branch lines were also added.

With a final spike ceremony held just west of the Pecos River, the Southern Pacific boasted a direct route into New Orleans, Louisiana.  Better known as Southern Pacific's " Sunset Route " this corridor became a key artery within its system.

Through a corporate restructuring the GH&SA was swallowed up into other SP holding company on March 1, 1927, the Texas & New Orleans Railroad.

Today, the old BBB&C is still an important component of SP successor Union Pacific.  Because of the state's size, natural resources, and important cities (Dallas/Fort Worth, Galveston, San Antonio, etc.) Texas still contains thousands of miles of railroads.

  • Edwin Olsen Railroad Museum

" The former Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe railroad depot in Clifton has been restored with the old passenger section of the building being transformed into a railroad museum.

The original depot building was built in 1880 but burned in 1901 and was replaced with the current building. The Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe originated in Galveston and many Texas towns along the route were created by the railroad and named after various personalities within the railroad including Rosenberg, Sealy, Cameron, Temple, Moody, Kopperl and Morgan, to name a few.

Like many railroads in the era, the GC&SF encountered financial difficulty and was subsequently bought by the larger and more famous "Santa Fe", the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway in 1888.

In that era, the railroad was an economic juggernaut and was the cause for a migration of the town of Clifton from its original location, a bit north on the Bosque River, to be next to the rails.

Equipment, furniture and other goods and supplies, both large and small, arrived on a railhead directly behind the major store fronts.

Local farmers shipped their crops and cattle by rail; a grain elevator, a dedicated cotton bale loading platform and a cattle corral were all located on Clifton's rails just south of the depot.

At its peak, Clifton had seven active sets of rails passing through town, distributed on both sides of the depot building.

luxury train travel texas

With the rapid growth of the highway system and more affordable and reliable automobiles combined with the dawn of the airline industry, national demand for railroad passenger service plummeted after World War II and in 1953 scheduled passenger service in Clifton was terminated. Santa Fe's "Texas Chief", which operated between Galveston and then Houston and Chicago, continued to pass through Clifton with the closest stop being in McGregor.

In 1967 the U.S. Postal Department terminated the vast majority of mail contracts with America's railroads.

Those mail contracts were the lifeblood of the passenger train service and after the contract cancellation, the railroads rushed to drop unprofitable passenger service all across the country.

In 1971 Amtrak assumed nearly all passenger rail traffic in the United States with Santa Fe's "Texas Chief" being ultimately replaced by Amtrak's Texas Eagle which still passes through Clifton to and from Chicago.

In 1983 local freight traffic had also diminished substantially and the Santa Fe closed the agency in Clifton, donating the depot building to the City of Clifton with the proviso that it be moved off the AT&SF right-of-way.

The City moved the depot to about two blocks north and two blocks west of its original position and converted it into the headquarters for the Clifton Police Department, a capacity in which it served for over 25 years.

The railroad industry went through yet another series of financially trying times.

Many railroads were failing and mergers and acquisitions became commonplace throughout the industry as the railroads worked to survive in an environment where the many operational interfaces between the customers and the various railroads produced huge inefficiencies.

A proposed merger of the Santa Fe with the Southern Pacific was blocked by the federal government.

Although still profitable, the Santa Fe needed a partner and in 1995 the Santa Fe was acquired by the Burlington Northern, giving birth to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe or BNSF. BNSF still uses sidings in Clifton for occasional local freight shipments but most of the trains now simply pass through town on their way to other destinations.

After the police department moved into a more spacious and modern home, the depot fell into ill repair. Very little maintenance had been done in 30 years.

So, in 2016 the family of Edwin Olsen, a long time Clifton resident and a die-hard railroad enthusiast, generously offered to finance much needed repairs and improvements to the depot including a new roof, carpentry repairs, new heating and air conditioning, electrical work and both interior and exterior paint, interior lighting, landscaping and display cases and many items for those cases.

So in April, 2017 Amtrak's Texas Eagle made the first scheduled passenger stop in Clifton in over 54 years and de-boarded over 60 passengers to help celebrate the grand opening of the Edwin Olsen Railroad Museum.

While naturally focused on the Santa Fe, the museum houses historical railroad items from many other famous railroads. A fully functional HO-scale model railroad layout exposes a new generation  to model railroading while kindling fond memories for many other railroad fans.

The City of Clifton owns and operates the museum, which is open on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the each month, except for holiday weekends, from 10am to 2pm. The museum is also open to school tour groups, civic organizations and others by special arrangement through the City offices. "

Between the many diverse regions and cities, you’ll find plenty of train excursions in the Lone Star State to sit back and enjoy the scenery, whether on a train tour of the Hill Country , a wine train in North Texas, or a historic small-town train that takes you a step back in time.

5 Must-Do Scenic Train Rides in Texas

Posted by Cindy Brzostowski August 25, 2022 Updated September 14, 2022

Forget about planes and automobiles…all aboard on one of these Texas train rides!

If you’ve ever traveled around Texas, then you know that the car is king. Just look at that one infamous section of I-10 in Houston that has 26 lanes if you need any further proof.

Driving may be the most common way to get from destination to destination and city to city, but that’s not to say that it’s the only way to explore what the state has to offer. How about a cool train ride, for example?

While Texas doesn’t have nearly as extensive of a rail network as say the East Coast, it does have a handful of tourist train rides that offer fun journeys for the whole family.

And while the trains may be more for entertainment than for actually traveling from point A to point B, they offer far more than those mini train rides you see at zoos and amusement parks.

Whether you’re a local looking for something to do in your home state, a visitor interested in a unique experience, or an avid locomotive enthusiast, you won’t soon forget your time on one of these train rides in Texas.

1. Austin Steam Train

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Kelly | DiscoveringATX (@discoveringatx)

Based in Cedar Park, the Austin Steam Train Association is putting in work to preserve the experience of historic railroad travel and offer that experience to the public.

It all came together after this one steam locomotive, Southern Pacific No. 786, was retired from operation and donated to Austin in 1956, and then two decades later, Southern Pacific sold miles of track through the Hill Country to the city.

Some rail aficionados with a vision of recreating historic passenger railroading put two and two together and thus the Austin Steam Train Association was born.

Currently, ASTA has three historic locomotives: two of which are in the process of being restored and one which is currently in use for rides. It’s not just the locomotives that are worth nothing though. The vintage train cars are something special—each with a distinct personality and story.

For example, there’s the Nambe, an adults-only, first-class lounge passenger car, which dates back to the 1930s and has seating arranged like a diner with tables and chairs. Then there’s the Buckeye Lake all-ages coach, which was built in 1949 for operation in New York and has funky blue seats.

The ASTA’s signature ride is the Hill Country Flyer which takes you through the Hill Country with a two-hour layover in Burnet and then returns you to their Cedar Park Depot.

For a fun family activity, consider joining the North Pole Flyer ride where Santa makes an appearance. For a unique date idea, there’s the Speakeasy Train during which you can pretend it’s the 1920s while drinking champagne and enjoying live entertainment.

2. Texas State Railroad

texas train rides - Texas State Railroad

Running between the cities of Rusk and Palestine over in East Texas, the Texas State Railroad offers a trip back in time—a scenic four-hour long, 50-mile round trip to be exact.

In one of their refurbished train cars, which date back to the early-1900s, you’ll make your way through the countryside of the Piney Woods region. Settle in as you listen to fun facts about the railroad’s history and lore and old-timey tunes.

Throughout the journey, you’ll cross over 24 bridges, and in the middle, there’s a one-hour layover for lunch at the depot. Getting peckish before the lunch stop? Just pick up some snacks in the concession car.

If the Christmas season is your favorite time of year, then you’ll want to climb aboard the Texas State Railroad’s Polar Express ride.

It’s easy to get in the holiday spirit as you’re served hot chocolate and cookies while listening to someone read out the classic The Polar Express. There’s also some Christmas carol singing too, so this is one experience that young kids are sure to love.

Attention campers: You actually have the chance to set up camp near the Rusk train depot, which itself butts up against a 15-acre lake with loads of different fish to try and catch.

Not only does that mean you get the experience of staying by a historic railroad but you’ll also get access to the depot’s amenities (there’s a movie theater!).

3. The Grapevine Vintage Railroad

texas train rides - Grapevine Vintage Railroad

Make your way over to Grapevine near Dallas, to check out the Grapevine Vintage Railroad . Depending on the day, you’ll either be pulled along by a steam locomotive from 1896 or a diesel locomotive from 1953, and the cars are 1920s Victorian coaches, so it’s history all around.

The train’s main route, the Cotton Belt Route, starts in downtown Grapevine and then takes passengers through a few different cities in the county until the Fort Worth Stockyards. You’ll get a couple of hours to wander around for a bit, and then it’s back on the train to return to Grapevine.

All in all, it’s about a six-hour experience. If that’s too long for you, consider doing the 30-minute Grapevine Bear Creek Short Line ride or the 45-minute Trinity River Train Excursion instead.

When booking a ticket, it’s up to you how classy you want to ride. There’s the economy class with wooden benches for seating, the touring class with floor-to-ceiling windows, first class with gorgeous upholstered seats, and the ambassador class where there’s extra roomy table-style seating and complimentary snacks.

The train runs 10 months out of the year (there’s a break in January and February for maintenance), and throughout that time, you can catch different special event trains. Love wine? Go fo the Jazz Wine Train, which features live jazz music onboard and tastings from local wineries.

And seeing as Grapevine is called the Christmas Capital of Texas, you know it’s going to be a good time on the North Pole Express where Mrs. Claus will be your host for all the festivities. Wearing your holiday pajamas is encouraged!

4. Historic Jefferson Railway

texas train rides - Historic Jefferson Railway

Have you ever been on a train ride that includes an alligator feeding as part of its journey? Say hello to the Historic Jefferson Railway .

Chugging through the woods and wetlands, this train ride, powered by a gas locomotive, takes about 40 minutes and includes a stop at the Diamond Don Gator Pit where you’ll get to watch a feeding. Unlike the other trains on this list, this train features open compartments so you can feel the fresh air and better take in the scenery as you go along.

You can catch a ride every Saturday either at 12:30 pm or 2:30 pm, and along the way, you’ll be treated to some interesting facts with the onboard historical narration. Along with that regular Saturday schedule, the railway does have various special events throughout the year.

In the past, they’ve done a spooky Friday the 13th train in the evening, which takes you through the dark woods. They’ve also done a special Mother’s Day Express and Father’s Day Express where the mom or dad being celebrated gets a 10% discount.

While you’re in the city of Jefferson, keep the train-themed fun going by heading a few blocks down the road from the railway to the Jay Gould Railroad Car that’s on display outside.

This historic train car was the private parlor car of the railroad magnate and is just across the street from the Excelsior House Hotel, which opened in 1858 and is the oldest continuously operating hotel in the state.

5. Bonus: Amtrak

texas train rides - texas eagle amtrak

Okay, we know Amtrak isn’t necessarily a tourist train ride like the others we’ve mentioned here, but we’d be remiss not to include some mention of it when talking about train rides in Texas.

If you’ve ever spent time traveling around New York City, Boston, Washington, D.C., or Philadelphia, then Amtrak service may be old hat to you, but it’s not something your average Texas makes use of (remember what we said about car being king).

It is, however, good news for anyone who’s not into flying or driving, since Amtrak does offer some options for traveling through Texas with its passenger railroad service.

There are three Amtrak routes in the state and 19 Amtrak stations, including all the major cities of Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, and San Antonio.

One of the routes is the Texas Eagle , which get this, is the longest train route in the whole country! It runs from Chicago to San Antonio, and if that’s still not long enough for you, you can connect to Amtrak’s Sunset Limited in San Antonio to get all the way to Los Angeles.

Wondering how comfy or not you can get on such a journey, which takes between 30 to 32 hours? Well, pretty comfy if you decide to book a bedroom suite where the seats convert to beds and you have an in-room bathroom with a shower.

Anyone traveling in a private room gets additional perks like complimentary meals and lounge access. Now that’s some modern-day train travel for you.

Take A Train Trip On The Texas Eagle

Who’s ready for an adventure on the rails?

luxury train travel texas

  • Texas Eagle Route
  • Accommodations
  • Connecting Services

There’s a particular thrill to train travel. The whirring of the train cars, the landscape speeding past while you relax inside—there’s nothing quite like it. Luckily, there are more than a few train routes threading through the South, connecting states and cities and offering a different mode of transportation to travelers. One of them, the Texas Eagle , is ideal for a journey on the rails. It’s one of the longest Amtrak routes in the country, and it will whisk you through the Lone Star State and all of its singular sights, stopping in some of Texas’s favorite cities and small towns along the way.

Where You Can Take The Texas Eagle

Amtrak offers the invitation to railway adventure on their website , saying, “Let Amtrak take you deep in the heart of Texas. Hop aboard the Texas Eagle, traveling between Chicago and San Antonio, through major cities from Austin to Dallas.” The route begins in the Windy City and makes stops in Illinois; St. Louis, Missouri; and Arkansas. Then it heads into Texas for stops in Dallas, Fort Worth , Austin, and San Antonio, cities with their own distinct personalities and plenty of sightseeing, shopping, and dining opportunities in each. If you travel in the spring, you might see the Texas Hill Country's famed bluebonnets and other wildflowers blooming across the countryside.

After San Antonio, connecting service through the Sunset Limited continues, eventually stopping in Del Rio and Alpine, Texas , as it curves through the southern part of the state. Leaving Texas, the route zooms into New Mexico and Arizona before ending its journey in Los Angeles, California. Traveling from Chicago to San Antonio takes 32 hours and 25 minutes, while the longer journey from Chicago to Los Angeles takes 65 hours and 20 minutes.

Dining On The Texas Eagle

When embarking on a long railway journey, dining options are top of mind. According to Amtrak, those who book first-class private rooms have access to flexible dining in the lounge or through complimentary room service. The flexible menu means you don’t have to worry about reservations when you’re traveling by train and hunger hits. You can find the particular offerings of the route you’re traveling on, as well as sample menus, available on the Amtrak website . Offerings on some sample menus have included baked ziti and meatballs , Atlantic salmon and shrimp, and slow-braised beef short ribs.

The Texas Eagle menu includes hot meals like pancakes and sausage for breakfast and chicken enchiladas or beef burgundy for lunch or dinner. Along with sodas, you can order beer, wine, and spirits.

Traditional dining service in the dining car is only available between San Antonio and Los Angeles. Cafe service is available to all riders on most routes and includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner items like sandwiches, salads, and mac and cheese. There's a sizable snack menu as well as beer, wine, and spirits.

Accommodations On The Texas Eagle

Accommodations on the Texas Eagle route vary by train but according to Amtrak can include coach seats (reclining seats with reading lights and outlets), Superliner Roomettes (seats that turn into beds with linens and lounge access), Superliner Bedrooms and Superliner Bedroom Suites (more space than a roomette with in-room showers), family rooms, and accessible bedrooms. More information on each of the accommodation options can be found on the Amtrak website .

Connecting Services On The Texas Eagle

The adventure doesn’t have to end just because the rail route does. If you want to add a few more stops to your trip, the Amtrak Thruway Service offers connecting transportation to Shreveport , Louisiana, Houston , and Galveston . No matter where the journey takes you, on the Texas Eagle, you’re sure to disembark with a story to tell.

  • 7 What is the nicest train to travel on?

What is the most luxurious Amtrak train?

There are many different Amtrak trains, each with its own unique features and amenities. However, the most luxurious Amtrak train is probably the Coast Starlight.

The Coast Starlight offers many luxurious features, including a private bedroom with a queen-sized bed, a private bathroom with a shower, a living area with a sofa and a dining table, and a large picture window that offers beautiful views of the passing scenery.

The Coast Starlight also offers a number of other amenities, including a library, a fitness room, and a children’s play area. And, of course, passengers can enjoy delicious meals and drinks in the train’s dining car.

Overall, the Coast Starlight is the perfect way to experience the luxury and comfort of Amtrak travel.

What is the most luxurious train in USA?

If you’re looking for a luxurious train ride in the USA, the answer is the Grand Canyon Railway. This train travels from Williams, Arizona to the Grand Canyon National Park, and offers passengers a number of wonderful amenities, including an on-board historian, a dining car, and a lounge car.

The Grand Canyon Railway was originally built in 1901, and it has been in continuous operation ever since. It’s one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States, and it’s easy to see why – the train journey is simply spectacular. The tracks follow the route of the old Santa Fe Railroad, and offer passengers amazing views of the Grand Canyon and the surrounding landscape.

The Grand Canyon Railway is also a great way to explore the Grand Canyon National Park. The park is huge, and it’s impossible to see everything in a single visit. The railway offers a number of different tour packages, so you can choose the one that’s best suited to your interests.

If you’re looking for a luxurious train ride in the USA, the Grand Canyon Railway is the obvious choice. It offers passengers a wonderful blend of history, scenery, and relaxation, and it’s sure to leave you with some unforgettable memories.

Is there a train that runs through Texas?

Yes, there is a train that runs through Texas. The Texas Eagle, which is run by Amtrak, operates between San Antonio and Chicago. The train makes stops in Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, and a number of other smaller cities along the way. The Texas Eagle is a popular way to travel between Texas and the Midwest, and it offers a unique way to see the Lone Star State.

Is there luxury train travel in the US?

There is no luxury train travel in the US. Amtrak is the only passenger rail service in the country and it is not a luxury service.

However, there are some tourist rail services that offer luxury train travel. These services are mostly found in the western US and include the Grand Canyon Railway, the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, and the California Zephyr.

These services offer a more luxurious experience than Amtrak, with nicer accommodations and more scenic routes. They are also more expensive, with tickets costing anywhere from $100 to $500 per person.

How much does a Superliner bedroom cost?

How much a Superliner bedroom costs depends on the type of car and the type of room. Generally, a bedroom costs more than a standard room.

Rooms on the Superliner I and Superliner II trains are more expensive than those on the Viewliner train. The least expensive rooms are typically those that do not have a window. Rooms with a window or room with a view of the scenery typically cost more.

Prices for a bedroom also vary depending on the season. Rooms are typically more expensive during busy travel periods, such as the summer and holidays.

Are Amtrak sleeper cars worth it?

Are Amtrak sleeper cars worth it? That’s a question that can be answered in a number of different ways, depending on what you value in your travel experience.

For some, Amtrak sleeper cars offer a comfortable and convenient way to travel cross-country. There’s no need to worry about finding a place to sleep or about driving for long stretches of time. And for those who enjoy spending time in the company of others, Amtrak sleeper cars can provide a social atmosphere in which to travel.

But for others, Amtrak sleeper cars may not be worth the cost. For one, they can be quite expensive, especially if you’re traveling with a group. And since the sleeper cars are often full, you may not have as much privacy as you would like. Additionally, the food and drink options on Amtrak trains can be limited, so you may not get the same level of quality and variety that you would find on a traditional cruise or in a hotel.

What is the nicest train to travel on?

There is no definitive answer to this question as everyone’s opinion of what is the “nicest” train to travel on will be different. However, there are some trains that are generally considered to be more luxurious and comfortable than others, and these may be a good choice for those looking for a relaxing and enjoyable journey.

Some of the most luxurious trains in the world include the Orient Express, the Rocky Mountaineer, and the Canadian. These trains offer a wide variety of amenities, including fine dining, comfortable seating, and panoramic views of the countryside. They are also usually quite expensive, so they may not be affordable for everyone.

If you’re looking for something a bit more affordable, there are a number of trains in Europe that are considered to be particularly comfortable. The Eurostar, for example, has been voted one of the most comfortable trains in the world, and it offers a number of amenities, including a movie theater, a shop, and a bar.

Ultimately, the best way to find out which train is the “nicest” for you is to do some research and read reviews from other passengers. This will give you a good idea of what to expect from different trains and will help you to choose the one that best suits your needs.

A lake of the same name is next to the city, and you can get a closer look at the water from Millennium Park (which also has a great playground), the Creole Nature Trail or with a boat or kayak rental .

However, most people visit the city for the casinos and festivals . It’s an easy adult getaway if you want to gamble, lounge at a resort pool ( Golden Nugget and L’Auberge both have lazy rivers) or party at an event.

Travel time is about five hours, and the San Antonio Amtrak Station is conveniently near hotels ( Staybridge Suites is a 3-minute walk away), the Alamodome and the River Walk (pictured above).

Spanish missions are the major tourist attraction, including The Alamo . Natural Bridge Caverns , the Japanese Tea Gardens and the San Antonio Botanical Garden are also great outdoor areas to explore, plus there are many other cultural attractions and a Six Flags amusement park.

Trains depart Houston on Saturday, Monday and Wednesday evenings, and you will need to stay in San Antonio at least two nights. Trip options include:

  • Depart on Saturday and return early Tuesday (three nights)
  • Depart on Monday and return early Friday morning (four nights)

On all departure days, you’ll have the option to return to Houston the next morning, but that will only give you 12 hours in New Orleans. Otherwise, here are other trip options based on the train schedule:

  • Depart on Friday and return on Monday morning (three nights)
  • Depart on Friday and return on Wednesday (five nights)

It’s an early morning arrival in Los Angeles on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, but keep in mind that there is a two-hour time difference between Houston and L.A., so the 5:30 a.m. PST arrival will feel more like 7:30 a.m.

The return train to Houston departs at 10 p.m. PST on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. You could technically spend the day in Los Angeles and get back on the train same day on Wednesdays and Fridays, or spend extra time in the city and take the train or a flight home.

The 8 Coolest Train Trips You Can Take

All aboard!

red train in winter wonderland

Whatever your preferred journey may be, these eight train trips are definitely bucket list-worthy.

Gornergrat-Bahn

matterhorn scene with gornegrat railway that is one of landmark in zermatt, switzerland

Switzerland is synonymous with train travel, thanks in part to the impeccably clean coaches, reliably accurate timetables, and striking landscapes found in every region. Visit Zermatt, a car-free village at the base of the Matterhorn. While the city itself offers an impressive view of the mountain, a ride aboard the Gornergrat-Bahn climbs more than 10,000 feet into the Alps for an even better view. From here, you can view glaciers, ski runs, and the amazing Alps as far as the eye can see, plus enjoy immersive experiences, an onsite restaurant, and more.

British Pullman

a train travels down the tracks

Belmond trains are in a class of luxury all their own, and while any route is sure to memorable, this England-based journey transports passengers back to the 1950s. While sipping champagne and enjoying a five-course meal, things begin to seem amiss as costumed actors wander the cars adding to the mystery. Spend your time both enjoying the Kent countryside and helping solve a murder in this clever immersive experience.

The Rocky Mountaineer’s First Passage to the West

eastbound train and bow range, banff national park, alberta, canada

The Rocky Mountaineer operates luxury train routes throughout the Rocky Mountains in both the United States and Canada. You can’t go wrong with any journey, but the “ First Passage to the West ” is extra special. Beginning in Vancouver, passengers can see snow-capped mountains and glistening waters before routing through the lakes in Kamloops. Ultimately, passengers arrive in Banff National Park and the beautiful Lake Louise.

GoldenPass Express

a train on the railway tracks

Switzerland has no shortage of stunning routes, but the brand new GoldenPass Express journey shouldn’t be missed. Connecting the Interlaken region (which is largely German) to Montreux (which is more French), the train introduces innovation in both technology and design, as well as a new passenger class. The Prestige Class includes seats that heat, recline, and even swivel so passengers can change their view. The route is included with the popular Swiss Travel Pass.

Napa Valley Wine Train

napa valley wine train, napa valley, california, united states of america, north america

You’ll need to leave the keys behind during a visit to Napa Valley’s historic vineyards, so the Wine Train has your transportation covered. Board a 100 year old train car for a six-hour journey through the valley, stopping at a handful of prominent vineyards for tastings along the way. While on board, enjoy a welcome glass of bubbles, a four-course meal, and plush interiors while cruising through stunning landscapes.

Eurostar from London to Paris

gare du nord

The innovation of this trip alone earns it a spot on the list. While the interiors may be comparable to a commuter airplane, the high-speed journey connects two bustling cities in a trip that takes just over two hours. The journey is possible thanks to the Channel Tunnel, which opened in 1994 and burrows 75 meters underneath the English Channel. At 31.5 miles long, it’s the world’s longest undersea tunnel.

The Orient Express La Dolce Vita

buildings lining waterfront in portofino

A tale as old as time, the Orient Express began operation in 1883, charming travelers with its unparalleled decor and quality dining options. While a replicated experience won’t be available until 2025, climb aboard the La Dolce Vita journey through Italy operated by the same company. Destination options include stops in Venice, Rome, Siena, Portofino, Montalcino, and more.

Hiram Bingham

a dining table with a vase of flowers and glasses

The Hiram Bingham train from Belmond is an ultra-lux way to travel to the Lost City of the Incas. Beginning in Cusco, Peru, traveling through the Sacred Valley, this roundtrip adventure ultimately arrives at the entrance of Machu Picchu. You'll also enjoy a cocktail, brunch and gourmet Peruvian lunch, as well as stunning views both in the early morning and evening.

19 Epic Luxury Train Rides To Add To Your Bucket List

There’s always been something so romantic about taking a train ride.

I’m that person who even gets a kick out of riding on the orange and yellow 1970’s subway in New York City, but I also love seeking out the unique train ride experiences around the world.

From snowy train rides around Yosemite to epic trips through the Scottish Highlands , these are all the luxury train rides to add to your bucket list.

Why Travel By Train?

Luxury train travel is such a unique way to see the world. It’s slower than planes, but lets you soak up the views of the surroundings in a different way than by car.

Railroad travel allows you to dine while soaking up views, make stops in smaller towns not easily accessed by plane travel and channel old-world living.

Plus, fancy train rides are just pure fun. they are a secret passion of mine. Here’s all the best luxury train vacations in the US and the entire world!

19 Top Luxury Trains Around The World To Add To Your Bucket List

1. venice simplon-orient-express, europe.

Yes, the Orient Express is a REAL train! As a huge Agatha Christie fan, I was thrilled to discover the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express . one of the most luxurious train rides in the world goes from London to Venice, with stops in Italy and Paris in between on a route that’s multiple days.

The attention to detail is evident in every corner, from the polished wood paneling to the delicate Art Deco accents in the dining car, it oozes old-school glamour. Food is sourced locally at each stop and made fresh by talented chefs so you can expect delicious meals paired with European views outside your window.

For an unparalleled experience, consider booking the iconic Grand Suite car, known for its marbled en-suite bathrooms, 24 butler, kimono and slippers to take home and luxurious ambiance, offering an unforgettable journey through the heart of Europe in utmost style and comfort.

2. British Pullman, England

The British Pullman, a Belmond train in England , invites passengers to relive the glamour of the 1920s and 1930s in style that happens to look a lot like Wes Anderson. Its meticulously restored carriages boast plush armchairs, polished wood, and intricate marquetry, capturing the essence of a bygone era.

Stopping at various historical spots around England such as Bath (a Unesco world heritage site), York or Canterbury, the train offers scenic routes that showcase the picturesque English countryside, with charming villages and historic landmarks passing by.

Indulgence continues with an emphasis on exceptional dining. Onboard chefs craft gourmet meals ranging from lavish brunches to elegant afternoon teas and exquisite multi-course dinners, all served with attentive care. Each carriage carries its own character, like the elegantly appointed “Audrey” carriage or the “Cygnus” carriage built in the 1950s.

Oh, and there’s a murder mystery luncheon in the dining cars! The British Pullman offers a timeless escape, combining history, luxury, and scenic beauty into an unforgettable journey through England’s past and present.

PS – you can book the train out for private events or things like proposals (just saying). Pullman train trips are famous for a reason.

If you’re looking for luxury trains in the USA, nothing is more famous in Napa Valley than the Wine Train . This rail travel offers a distinctive opportunity to explore multiple wineries along the route, with stops that allow guests to disembark, sample exquisite wines, and learn about the winemaking process from the experts themselves.

Napa Valley is already a North American bucket list spot, so add this bucket list train to your trip!

4. Cruise Train Seven Stars, Japan

Japan’s Cruise Train Seven Stars is often called the most luxurious train service in the world since it pairs old-world charm with modern Japanese travel technology.

But it’s worth the wait. These train cars are drenched in Kanso interior style with a lot of wood and organic elements. There’s a lounge car bar, dining car and a select number of guest suites, as this is an overnight luxury train.

They offer 3 different routes that vary in dates and locations, but again they are all competitive so apply early and cross your fingers.
