How explosive will LSU’s offense be in 2024?

LSU was college football’s most explosive offense in 2023. It wasn’t that close either with 17% of the Tigers’ plays accounting for 20+ yards or a touchdown. The next best was USC  at 13.5%.

LSU’s level of explosiveness came somewhat as a surprise. The unit was expected to be good returning players like Jayden Daniels , Malik Nabers and Will Campbell , but LSU made its money in 2022 by being efficient, even when it wasn’t explosive.

2023 was a different story. LSU came out firing and Daniels’ became the best downfield passer in the sport on his way to winning the Heisman trophy.

But a lot of the elements that made last fall’s offense dangerous are gone. Daniels, Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. are playing professional football while offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock returned to Notre Dame . All that means LSU will have a new playcaller, a new quarterback, and new go-to receivers this fall.

Explosive plays are variable from year to year. There’s some correlation, but the metric isn’t as stable than success rate and EPA. Some of that has to do with sample size. With explosive plays, you’re only looking at a select few plays across the entirety of a season.

That can make explosiveness tough to predict, especially in LSU’s case with all the turnover on offense.

However, this offense appears capable of keeping the big-play trend going in Baton Rouge. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier , despite trying to shake the label at times, is a gunslinger. He’s not afraid to let it fly.

Receiver is perhaps a bigger question. Nabers led the country in 20+ yard catches while Thomas led the nation in touchdowns. That level of big play creation from a receiving duo is rare and nearly impossible to repeat. In all likelihood, LSU won’t get that level of production in 2024, but Kyren Lacy and CJ Daniels are no strangers to the long ball.

Lacy averaged 18.6 yards per catch, which ranked third in the SEC. Daniels was even better at 19.3 yards per catch, putting him top 20 nationally.

The last time Joe Sloan was a full-time play-caller in 2020 and 2021, he didn’t show a propensity to take downfield shots. But that could be more related to the system and personnel at Louisiana Tech than anything else.

When he called plays in the bowl game against Wisconsin , Nussmeier threw 10 passes with 20+ air yards. Sloan has a QB he trusts to dial them up.

The most significant drop in explosiveness could be the run game. Last year, Daniels ripped off big runs from the QB position, ranking second nationally with 20 runs of 20+ yards. Nussmeier doesn’t have the same ability with his legs and LSU lost RB Logan Diggs , who was second on the team in 10+ yard runs.

This offense is going to score points, there’s no question about that. But the way LSU goes about doing it might be a little different. I still expect this to be one of the SEC’s top units when it comes to creating big plays, but there will be games when LSU needs to rely on the ruthless efficiency of the offensive line.

CDC uses Travel Health Notices (THNs) to inform travelers about global health risks during outbreaks, special events or gatherings, and natural disasters, and to provide advice about protective actions travelers can take to prevent infection or adverse health effects.

A THN can be posted for: 1) a disease outbreak (higher number of expected cases) in a country or region, 2) sporadic cases of a disease in an unusual or new geographic location, 3) natural and human-made disasters with severe environmental health risks, or infrastructure damage that would limit healthcare services availability and 4) mass gathering events that can lead to disease outbreaks. What school has the Rocco's Jello Shot Challenge record heading into the 2024 College World Series?

lsu travel policy

This week, eight college baseball teams will travel to Omaha, Nebraska with dreams of eventually leaving the city with a national championship.

The College World Series is the pinnacle of the sport, a place where legends are cemented and legacies are forged, with the victorious players and coached immortalized as champions.

Across North 13th Street in downtown Omaha from Charles Schwab Stadium, where the CWS will be played, a different kind of competition will be held.

REQUIRED READING: South Carolina baseball lures former LSU coach Paul Mainieri out of retirement

The Jello Shot Challenge at Rocco’s Pizza and Cantina in Omaha has become a staple of the CWS in recent years, an event that has become an object of intense curiosity away for college sports enthusiasts across the country. The thousands of fans who make the pilgrimage to Nebraska to follow their teams take part in their own quest for a title, with the restaurant tabulating how many Jello shots are purchased by each of the eight respective fan bases and keeping count on what has become a famous white board by the bar.

In the years since its inception, the challenge has produced some eye-popping results, with fans thirsty for both alcohol and bragging rights consuming thousands of shots.

As the start of the 2024 CWS inches closer, here’s a look at the Jello Shot Challenge record:

Who has the Rocco’s Jello Shot Challenge record?

The record for most Jello shots consumed by a single school’s fan base at the CWS is held by a not-so-surprising winner.

Last year, as their team won its seventh-ever CWS and first since 2009, LSU fans purchased 68,888 Jello shots at Rocco’s, shattering the record set the previous year by Ole Miss, with 18,777.

After the first day of the CWS alone, Tigers fans had already bought 2,993 Jello shots , which would have ranked it among the top 10 finishers ever.

About 10% of those shots came from a single purchase. With LSU approaching Ole Miss’ record, Todd Graves, a Baton Rouge resident and the founder and CEO of Raising Cane’s, bought $30,000 worth of shots, which comes out to 6,000 drinks.

Not all of those drinks were served. There wouldn’t be enough recipients for them at one time and even if there were, there would be legal and ethical conundrums with handing out that much alcohol. Instead, Rocco’s gave a shot to everyone in the bar who was 21 and raised their ID. After the game that night, everybody who came by the bar also received one.

"You know what, man? I started from nothing," Graves said to ESPN last year . "I had to commercial fish in Alaska to start my first restaurant ... You work hard and become successful and then you're able to buy all these LSU fans a shot, it feels pretty cool. It's a good way to celebrate with others."

If nothing else, the money went to a good cause. For every $5 shot, $1 goes to the shot-drinking team’s local food bank and another 50 cents is donated to the Heartland Food Bank in Omaha.

Rocco’s Jello Shot Challenge best finishes

With LSU atop the list with a mark that may never be bested, unless there’s another billionaire out there thirsting for CWS glory, here are the eight schools whose fans have had at least 3,000 Jello shots at a given CWS:

  • LSU, 2023 : 68,888
  • Ole Miss, 2022 : 18,777
  • Arkansas, 2022 : 8,672
  • Wake Forest, 2023 : 7,622

LOOK: No. 1 Prospect in America Shares Update Following Unofficial Visit to LSU

Zack nagy | jun 12, 2024.

lsu travel policy

Kim Mulkey and the LSU Tigers brought in the No. 1 prospect in America for an unofficial visit to Baton Rouge last Wednesday: Aaliyah Chavez.

Chavez, the top prospect in the 2025 cycle, has blossomed during her high school campaign with her junior year becoming one of the best in recent memory.

When it comes to LSU, the Tigers are putting their foot on the gas in her recruitment. LSU made several in-person visits this year, including a trip to Lubbock, Texas to watch her playoff showdown in February.

The most coveted recruit on the market, Chavez has been wined and dined by the top programs in America with LSU now getting a crack at the superstar last week.

Chavez released her Top 10 schools recently with LSU making the cut alongside Arizona, Ohio State, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Texas Tech, UCLA, and USC.

“I just want to thank all the coaches for their time invested into recruiting me on this journey,” Chavez wrote in the post. “After much consideration me and my family have come down to a list of my top 10 schools.”

Now, with her junior season in the rearview mirror, Chavez will begin taking unofficial visits this summer while balancing her AAU schedule. She's currently playing on the EYBL circuit with five-star LSU commit Bella Hines with the two shining in travel ball.

LSU target Aaliyah Chavez alongside Mikaylah Williams and Co. on her official visit to LSU on June 5, 2024.

Chavez averaged 38.4 points, 10.3 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 3.4 steals per game as a junior with her recruitment taking the country by storm.

For her career, the No. 1 2025 prospect is averaging over 31 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 5.5 assists a night against a rigorous Texas schedule.

Now, LSU has had the opportunity to wine and dine Chavez after a trip down South for an unofficial visit. Long term, the Tigers will look to get her in for an official visit this fall, a source tells LSU Country.

After signing the No. 1 class in the 2023 cycle, Mulkey's program is looking to build sustained greatness in Baton Rouge with the top prep players in America on their radar.

Chavez, the top hooper on the prep scene, is the coveted target they're pursuing in next year's cycle alongside several Top 10 prospects.
