- For traditional English fare at a reasonable price, try a pub meal of fish and chips or bangers and mash. Stilton cheese, steak and kidney pie, and Cumberland sausages are also worth a try.
- Modern-day London boasts an array of diverse international restaurants. Popular options for the adventurous palate include Indian, Thai, Chinese, Indonesian, Greek, and West African cuisine. Sip afternoon tea with delicious finger sandwiches and scones at Harrods for the ultimate in English tradition.
- Scottish cuisine, on the tour extension, relies on readily available ingredients like game, dairy, and fish, with little use of exotic spices. Pickled kippers and smoked salmon are popular as well as hearty dishes like Scotch broth (stew of meat and root vegetables) and haggis (a savory pudding of sheep innards). Scotch whisky is a legendary local spirit, and Scottish ales are world-famous.
- The United Kingdom operates on the European standard 220-240 volts and uses a Type G plug with three large, flat pins.
- We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other electrical device without a built-in converter.
- The strength of the air conditioning in European hotels is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it is usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
- Hotels may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances, but these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
- Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
- There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.

- You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
- Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
- International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
- At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
- We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
- If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
- Tips can only be paid in cash.
- Most optional excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour.
- Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa, or MasterCard as payment for excursions.
- Please be advised that if you pay for an excursion by credit card while on tour, it may take up to three months for your card to be charged.
- Some optional excursions may only be purchased in advance. See page four of your tour itinerary for more information.

London City Walks: 2024
Your guide to the city of london, guided walking tours through the city of london and westminster, 2024 walk dates:.
In addition to our advertised walking tours, we are happy to organise tailor-made walks for individuals and parties. We also issue Walks Vouchers (details on request). Just contact us with your requirements or with suggestions for additions to our regular programme. All our walks end within easy reach of public transport and close to at least one good pub!
Below are our scheduled events. A full list of all the walking tours in our current repertoire can be found on our Walks page. Unless otherwise stated, the charge for all our walks is £10/person and booking is not necessary.
Walking London’s streets and alleyways is the only way to discover the secrets of this extraordinary city.
London City walks is an established walking tours company, run by Pete Smith, a former university teacher and a qualified and experienced City of London and City of Westminster guide, who writes and lectures on a variety of London-related issues.
Our earliest programme of walks stemmed from our close association with All Hallows by the Tower, the oldest church in the City and one of its most interesting, which is, as its name suggests, situated next to the Tower of London in Byward Street (nearest Underground station Tower Hill on the District and Circle lines). Many of our walks still begin or end at this fascinating church, and all of our City walks draw upon the rich diversity of the City of London, to give old hands and newcomers alike an introduction to the oddities and complexities of the Square Mile and its history from the first Roman occupation in AD 43 to the twenty-first century. In the City of Westminster, walks range from “Parks & Palaces” to “City of Vice: Covent Garden”, and along the River Thames we explore the curiosities of the capital from Greenwich in the east as far as Hammersmith in the west.
Our portfolio of walks continues to expand, partly in response to new commissions and partly because researching new areas and topics is simply so much fun! Our 2020 shutdown gave us the chance to revise our programme, and 2021 saw new walks on offer alongside tried and tested old favourites.
All our walks are researched, planned, rehearsed and guided by us. On the few occasions when demand outstrips supply, we use only qualified and experienced guides whom we know and have worked with.
Email – [email protected]
We hope to see you on one or more of these walks. Watch this space for details of the walks planned for the future.

- NEW! From Shakespeare to Oscar Wilde - find out about famous writers and their experiences of life in the City of London.
New guided walks from 1st April
Starting in April 2024, City of London Guides will be running two guided walks per day, with three new themes joining their regular schedule of walks:
1) News from Fleet Street - press barons, brave journalists and a foul-mouthed parrot
- Explore the street that gave birth to the newspaper trade with an expert guide. Discover the drinking dens where writers shared the latest gossip (and where women fought for the right to be served at the bar). Hear tales of the powerful press barons who built media empires, and the courageous journalists who ventured into war zones to bring back the real news. Meet the man who fought for a free press over 200 years ago, and the pub parrot which entertained celebrity visitors and eventually made its own headlines.
2) From Shakespeare to Oscar Wilde - Writers and their experience of life in the City
- Join an expert guide on a walk exploring the literary legacy of the City. This is the place where the first printing press in England was established, and all written works had to be registered before publication. Hear stories of the writers who were born and raised in the City, and those like Shakespeare who were drawn here from afar to make their names. Find out about the court case that destroyed Oscar Wilde’s reputation, and the brave publisher who held out for literary merit in a notorious obscenity trial. Meet the colleagues who ensured Shakespeare’s plays were saved for posterity, and the priest poet who almost lost it all for love.
3) Secrets and Symbols - A curious wander through the City of London
- On this entertaining, enlightening, and fascinating tour, follow your expert guide. If you know where to look, the past still communicates its litany of secrets, and its hidden history concealed by a city two-thousand years old. Ever wonder why we say ‘at sixes and sevens? What are those badges on the lampposts outside the Royal Exchange? Why are there no roads in the City of London? Yet the streets have some very interesting names: Love Lane anybody! We'll take a curious wander along the environs of Cheapside - finding out why it's called Cheap, keeping an eye out for Honey Bees and Demi-Maidens, and spotting descriptive street signs.
