Hi..Thinking about doing this trip on Labor Day -September 4. Will stores be closed because of the holiday? Read mixed reviews because there is alot of time on a bus. Is Hollywood Tours the company you recommend? Thanks

Hi Susan, Some stores and businesses close for Labor Day, but there are also many others that stay open. I would look up the Los Angeles attractions you plan on visiting to see their Labor Day hours. Also, Hollywood Tours is a popular company in this area, so they’re a good option for your visit. 🙂

What people love about los angeles to las vegas tours.

Great tour, good group size too
Well organized! You see a lot, but it's also a lot of time waiting/traveling by bus. Breakfast is always included , but not the rest of the meals. The guides are nice and provide a lot of info, mostly during the bus trips , which is nice because then you can explore each spot by your own
Although the dates of the tour were promoted as being an English language tour it was indeed an English, Italian and Spanish guided tour. When I booked the tour I noticed there were dates specifically for Italian and Spanish so I selected the one that said English. I did not mind the three languages so much but at times it was hard to follow what the guide was saying, I do not fault the guide. It just made some parts of the tour a bit lacking. As far as I know there were only two others in the group that relied on English for this tour. After speaking with them I thought they felt the same way. I had no problems with the others on the tour. They generally seemed very nice. The tour was promoted as having an half day tour of Los Angeles, mainly in the Hollywood area, but the tour only lasted three hours. After that we could remain with the group to take an optional tour of the beach area. or find our way back to the hotel on our own being reimbursed for for what we would pay. Although the beach trip was great, I felt only three hours of an advertised half day tour was misleading. The tour seemed rushed at times and not enough time to spend at some locations. I realize there were great distances between locations that would account for this. But maybe some things could be tweaked. I am not sure I can recommend this tour to my American friends If it was ONLY in English, yes, since there wee options for an Italian and Spanish tour. Maybe the tour company is generated for citizens of other countries and that is great. I love having them visit the USA. And I love visiting other countries myself. I have been to 35. This is the first time I have taken a guided tour of the USA. Mario, the tour director, and Norman, the bus driver, both were great. Mario seemed to make sure I understood some directions.

Road trip from Las Vegas to Los Angeles

If you've been hitting the slots in Nevada and want to spice up your week with a new flavor of urban, you should definitely do a road trip from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. Cutting through the Mojave Desert, the epic itinerary will take you past the most scenic parts of Southern California.

The 270-mile road trip from Las Vegas to Los Angeles takes 4 hours 15 minutes to drive. Key landmarks include Death Valley, Mojave National Preserve, and Joshua Tree National Park, as well as the cities of Palm Springs, Riverside, and Temecula.

Don't be fooled by the relatively short drive - this is one of the most scenic short trips you can do in the States, so read on to learn all about it.

How far is Los Angeles from Las Vegas and how long will the road trip take?

Taking the quickest possible route, the road trip from Las Vegas to Los Angeles takes 4 hours 15 minutes and covers 270 miles. If you're mainly just doing this trip to see Los Angeles, you can take off at virtually any time and make it that same day.

The issue with following this particular route, however, is that there isn't all that much incentive to stop on the way – unless you're set on spending a fair amount of time at Death Valley, the few landscapes exclusive to this route probably won't even extend your trip to 2 days.

Hot air balloons rising above a vineyard in Temecula on a sunny day with a silhouette of mountains in the background.

For something a little bit more interesting, consider driving straight through Mojave National Preserve and along Joshua Tree National Park, then making an overnight stop in Palm Springs - on top of there being more to see, this adds another urban metropolis to your itinerary.

Understandably, this route takes longer to drive since you'll barely get to drive on an interstate until you're past Palm Springs. On the other hand, the quicker route never strays from the freeway, nor does it pass through any huge cities that might slow down your drive.

Whether you're flying into Vegas or you simply don't have a vehicle in the city, renting a car for your road trip is something you'll want to take care of ASAP.

Best road trip route from Las Vegas to Los Angeles

If you have the time, choosing the best route from Las Vegas to Los Angeles is easy – the drive through Mojave National Preserve has more places to check out. If you want to check out Death Valley, however, that can be reason enough to consider the quicker route too.

Whether you're flying into Las Vegas or you simply don't have your own transport in the city, renting a car for your road trip is something you'll want to take care of ASAP.

The quick route (via I-15)

Take Interstate 15 south out of Las Vegas, just past Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area. Follow the interstate along Mojave National Preserve through Baker, and detour to Death Valley if you feel like it.

Otherwise, continue through Barstow (checking out Calico on the way) before driving through Victorville and between Angeles and San Bernardino National Forests. Right after that, take State Route & Interstate 210, then Interstate 10 to Los Angeles.

The scenic route (via Mojave National Preserve and Palm Springs)

Once again, leave Las Vegas along Interstate 15, but instead of going around Mojave National Preserve, cut through it via Nipton, Ivanpah, Morning Star Mine, and Kelso Cima Roads, then stop at Kelso. From there, take Kelbaker Road and the National Trans Highway to Amboy.

Follow Amboy Road to State Route 62 and pass Joshua Tree National Park before ending up at Palm Springs. Take as much time here as you can, then pass Mt San Jacinto and San Bernardino National Forests. From Beaumont, follow Interstate 10 west the rest of the way to LA.

Best places to stop between Las Vegas and Los Angeles

The road trip from Las Vegas to Los Angeles features some of the best resorts in California's repertoire. Although you have no shortage of options, consider booking a room at one of these hotels if you can:

Experience the Hollywood lifestyle in Death Valley

To enjoy Death Valley to the fullest, you basically have to visit when the weather is mild, but when it's viable, the park is an absolute must-see. Famous for being a favorite among Hollywood's finest actors, the beautiful Inn at Death Valley is one of California's best resorts .

It's not hard to see why the rich and famous tend to flock to this place – from the gorgeous flora in the middle of an otherwise arid desert, to the grandiose and welcoming interior, calling this place an oasis would be underselling it.

Sunrise over Zabriskie Point, Death Valley National Park, California

After basking in the sun by the large swimming pool and enjoying a drink by the outdoor fireplace, you can walk around the property and get absorbed in the beautiful greenery, relax in the spa and get a soothing massage, or take a short stroll to the nearby golf course.

Although this is a costly resort, it's not as expensive as you might expect it to be, all things considered. Besides, imagine seeing Martin Sheen pulling up to your hotel and booking the room next door!

Enjoy the beautiful aesthetic of Palm Springs

Palm Springs is an essential stopover if you're traveling the longer route, and much like Death Valley, it is frequently visited by the world's biggest stars. Combining an ideal location downtown and a flawless Mediterranean style, La Serena Villas is by far the best resort in town .

La Serena's presentation is unlike that of any other resort in the area – the beautiful rooms will make you feel like there's a sea and beach right around the corner. Stepping outside, you get to soak in the beautiful swimming pool or sunbathe with a gorgeous mountain backdrop.

A palm lined street in Palm Springs in California's Coachella Valley.

Afterwards, you can dry off at the outdoor fireplace, enjoy a Spanish or Mediterranean lunch, visit the spa and wellness center, or relax in your suite's private hot tub. If you explore Palm Springs in detail, forget about your car and rent one of the hotel's bicycles instead.

The only catch here is the high price, but Palm Springs' pride and joy is one of the best resorts along either route, so the investment is more than worthwhile.

Things to see on a road trip from Las Vegas to Los Angeles

With the road trip from Las Vegas to Los Angeles being relatively short, you can come up with a pretty definitive list of must-see places. You should definitely take a week or two to truly make the most of the trip by visiting all of the following places:

  • Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area – this area's Native American petroglyphs and abundant hiking trails are its most notable features
  • Mojave National Preserve – a highlight of the rugged Mojave Desert featuring beautiful terrain and the abandoned town of Kelso
  • Death Valley National Park – the park's often-astronomic temperatures tend to overshadow just how scenic it actually is
  • Calico – once a thriving mining town, Calico is now a well-preserved ghost town and esteemed tourist attraction
  • Angeles & San Bernardino National Forests – a gorgeous duo of forests that feature epic mountains and stunning old and new growth
  • Riverside – home to the University of California and some of the most attractive constructions in the entire state, this beautiful city is always alive and bustling with activity
  • Glen Ivy Hot Springs – an amazing place to enjoy healthy food and enjoy a relaxing spa treatment
  • Temecula – this city is best known for its top-notch wineries and the historic Old Town Temecula
  • Salton Sea – a large saline lake that features some beautiful landscapes and bird-watching spots
  • Topanga State Park – home to some incredible flora and the Backbone Trail System, this is also the largest within-city park in the States
  • Palm Springs – this amazing city's gorgeous mid-century architecture and abundance of activities have made it an attractive vacation spot for the rich and famous
  • Cabazon Dinosaurs – first popularized by Pee-wee's Big Adventure, these gigantic dinosaurs have long been a popular roadside attraction for anyone passing through Palm Springs
  • Mt San Jacinto State Park – the park is home to the titular San Jacinto Mountain and is renowned for its spectacular nature vistas
  • Joshua Tree National Park – an incredibly unique park at the juncture of two deserts, distinguished by its signature Joshua trees

As amazing as these landmarks are, you could and should off-road to discover some of the route's hidden gems if you have the time. Alternatively, you can drive along the coast from LA and visit some more spectacular beaches like Huntington State Beach or Malibu.

Best time to go on a road trip from Las Vegas to Los Angeles

There's a fair bit to consider before deciding when to do the road trip from Las Vegas to Los Angeles – like with any major city, the abundance of seasonal events draws in plenty of tourists year-round, and the weather conditions can make or break your trip too.

Driving through the Mojave Desert in the summer (particularly in July, when the temperatures in the center of the desert average at around 95 degrees) can be rather difficult. This also makes Death Valley a no-go area, as the temperatures there can reach over 100 degrees.

Although a summer visit can be attractive thanks to various epic events like the massive July 4th festivities and various film festivals, the temperatures hover around the mid-80s on average, and it's not uncommon for it to get hotter than that.

Evening shot of Downtown Los Angeles, California

Another issue around this time is the smog – you could try to get around this by staying closer to the shore (say, near the Santa Monica area), but chances are heaps of other tourists will have had the same idea.

Spring is Los Angeles' rainiest season, which is why the city gets the fewest visitors this time of year, except during spring break. Winter is obviously when the city's temperatures are at their lowest, and February is when the rain showers start to get a bit more frequent.

For the best possible experience, consider doing this road trip in the fall, preferably in October – temperatures are a tad more tolerable this time of year, and whereas June-August hotel prices range from steep to outrageous, you can expect to find some amazing deals in the fall.

The luxury hotels along Las Vegas Blvd are among its most sought-out attributes due to their immaculate and unique designs. The Venetian is one such example. It is a casino resort and luxury hotel featuring Italian themes, 20 restaurants, a shopping mall, artificial canals with offered gondola rides, a nightclub, and more!

The city is loaded with thrilling attractions people travel from all over the world to experience. Treat yourself to a Las Vegas vacation before you start the drive to LA!

Top things to do in the area:

  • Fremont Street
  • Las Vegas Boulevard
  • The Mob Museum
  • Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens
  • The Venetian

Las Vegas

Less than thirty minutes from the Las Vegas Strip, Seven Magic Mountains was established by famous Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone.

The exhibition displays seven dayglow totems that stretch 30-35 feet into the sky. The boulders used for the totems were locally sourced and painted colorfully, catching the eye of the beholder.

The art installation was enacted to strengthen Nevada’s support of artists worldwide further. The state is dedicated to incorporating varying styles and passions of art creation.

Though art is always open to interpretation, the meaning of the Seven Magic Mountains exhibition is believed to express the midway points between natural and artificial, from the natural beauty of the Mojave Desert to the passageway to the city of lights, Las Vegas.

The place of extremes, Death Valley National Park is the driest, lowest, and hottest national park. It is the hottest place on Earth, breaking a record of 134°F in 1913.

Contrary to its name, Death Valley National Park has fascinating geologic formations, rich habitats, and natural wonders. The park is part of the Mojave Desert and borders the Great Basin Desert to establish some of the most stunning vistas. Zabriskie Point and Dante’s View are two of the top landscapes people travel from all over to see.

At Badwater Basin, Death Valley National Park visitors can walk to the lowest point in North America, which may initially seem covered in snow but is blanketed in salt!

The Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes are one of the top attractions at Death Valley National Park. Many come to the towering sand dunes to try their hand at sandboarding for a unique and thrilling activity.

There are a few gas stations in the park but it’s recommended to have some backup in your car if you plan on off-roading.

Other top things to do in the area include:

  • Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes
  • Devil’s Golf Course
  • Dante’s View
  • Badwater Basin

The Mojave National Preserve is another beautiful place to visit on this scenic route to Los Angeles!

The Mojave Desert is the driest desert in the nation. Its mystifying landscapes were used as backdrops for films like The Avengers and Nocturnal Animals. It expands across four states and holds nine national park units. The Mojave National Preserve is the third largest of all United States National Park System units.

The Mojave National Preserve protects the largest population of Joshua Trees, even more than Joshua Tree National Park. Visiting the Mojave National Preserve grants an impeccable opportunity to see volcanic cinder cones, towering sand dunes, Joshua Trees, and much more!

Its trails, like the Hole-In-The-Wall Rings Trail, are a rewarding feature of the Mojave National Preserve. This trail is a climbing trek up input ring bolts mounted into the rock that is safe for hikers to proceed into Banshee Canyon. The canyon was named after the eerie mournful sounds created as the wind passes through the eroded holes in the rock.

Calico Ghost Town, in its prime, had more than 500 mines that produced more than $20 million in profit. Its primary source of income was the silver, gold, and borax plowed from the depths of the Earth.

When the silver dried up, the town was abandoned in the mid-1890s. Today, the old mining town has become a popular tourist spot for people to visit the remnants of the glory days of an Old West mining town.

On the drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, Calico Ghost Town is a perfect stop to take along the way. It is full of historical attractions and a mysterious ambiance that continues to attract visitors more than a hundred years after its abandonment.

Visit Lucy Lane’s house, which once acted as the courthouse and post office but now functions as a museum to exhibit intriguing artifacts from the town.

Then, take a trip on the historic Calico & Odessa Railroad around Calico Ghost Town to see where miners once worked. On the train ride, keep your eyes peeled for the name of the ghost town carved into the mountainside and exclusive sights of the mines that visitors can’t see on foot!

Other top things to do in the area:

One of the most favored roadside attractions to stop by, Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch is a creative inspiration come to life for Elmer Long.

Set on Route 66, Elmer Long created the main attraction from a collection he and his father scavenged. When Elmer was a kid, he would go camping with his father in the desert. Elmer and his father found dumps in the desert during these camping outings.

They both would find intriguing things to bring home, the main attraction being the bottles Elmer’s father collected that featured items they’d discovered from the dumps, including rakes, boats, and the like.

There’s even a bottle tree sculpture made from an old missile Elmer discovered on one of his scavenges! If you like unique attractions, be sure to stop at the Bottle Tree Ranch en route from Los Angeles to Las Vegas.

The Eagles are headed to the Las Vegas Sphere for eight shows this fall

The Eagles are touching down in Las Vegas.

The long-running rock band announced Thursday that it will play eight shows at Sphere, the $2-billion venue with the wraparound video screen just off the Vegas Strip, over four weekends this fall starting Sept. 20. Tickets for the concerts, the last of which is scheduled for Oct. 19, are set to go on sale June 21 (though presale access will be available to various groups as early as June 18).

The Sphere residency ostensibly comes as part of the Eagles’ so-called Long Goodbye, a farewell tour that launched in September — seven years after the death of co-founder Glenn Frey — and stopped at Inglewood’s Kia Forum for four nights in January.

A victory lap 50 years in the making: The Eagles say goodbye (maybe) at the Forum

The Eagles, with some help from special guest J.D. Souther, began their Long Goodbye to L.A. audiences with a sold-out show at the band’s ‘home field.’

Jan. 6, 2024

“Welcome to whatever this is,” singer Don Henley said with a smile to greet the crowd at the first of those Forum gigs. The band has said it will keep adding dates according to audience demand.

The Eagles will become the fourth musical act to play Sphere following U2 , which opened the building last year, Phish and Dead & Company, which is in the middle of a 30-show residency set to run through mid-August.

Last week the venue made news when a Phish fan said he’d received a letter from Sphere prohibiting him from entering the venue after he posted a video of himself taking a bong hit during a concert. Sphere later said it had rescinded the ban.

Registration for the band's presale is available now on the Eagles' site. The presale begins at 1 p.m. ET June 18, while a Live Nation presale starts at 1 p.m. ET June 20. A limited number of VIP packages will also go on sale at 1 p.m. ET June 18 on the band's website.

The Eagles playing the Sphere hasn’t been the best-kept secret . In May, James Dolan, executive chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment Co., mentioned on an earnings call the Eagles would be the next act to explore the creative and visual opportunities that come with playing the nine-month-old venue.

The band, which kicked off its farewell tour in September, will follow rapturously received residencies by U2, who christened the venue last fall, Phish and, currently, Dead & Company .

The Grateful Dead offshoot band fronted by Bob Weir and including John Mayer and Mickey Hart, are in the midst of a recently expanded 30-date run that will wrap Aug. 10.

All three of the acts who have parked at the Sphere have captivated crowds with awe-inspiring visual elements – rolling video that makes the room feel as if it’s moving, band images incorporated into TV sets, walls of backstage passes that envelop the inside of the venue – projected onto the 160,000-square-foot LED screen that wraps the interior.

The Eagles , currently touring Europe, have a set list stocked with their more laid-back hits in the first half (“Take it Easy,” “One of These Nights,” “Take it To the Limit”) that builds to rollicking rockers including “Life in the Fast Lane” and “Already Gone” as the show continues.
