How to Access Priority Pass Lounges

Priority Pass is the world’s leading program for independent airport lounges. Membership in Priority Pass allows passengers to access over 1,300 lounges worldwide, making it one of the best ways to ensure uninterrupted lounge access on all your travels.

Having a separate lounge membership can be handy if you’re flying in economy and don’t have access to a lounge with a business class or First Class ticket. Even if you have elite status with an airline, Priority Pass can still come in handy if you find yourself travelling on a different airline alliance as a one-time exception.

Let’s look at everything there is to know about the Priority Pass program, including which credit cards include Priority Pass membership, how you can enroll, how many guests you may bring, and which lounges you have access to, to help you make the most of your membership.

In This Post

Priority pass via the amex platinum cards, priority pass via other canadian credit cards, how to enroll in priority pass, which lounges do you have access to, what about priority pass restaurants.

The Priority Pass website lists a handful of membership packages, which would apply if you were looking to purchase an annual membership outright.

However, there’s almost no reason to purchase one of these memberships directly. Instead, the most common way of obtaining a Priority Pass membership is to get a premium travel credit card that automatically grants you Priority Pass memberships of varying levels.

The American Express Platinum Card and Business Platinum Card from American Express are the prime Canadian-issued candidates for those looking to enjoy the benefits of Priority Pass. That’s because these cards come with a Priority Pass Select membership, which grants free unlimited visits to airport lounges worldwide for the cardholder and one guest.

You aren’t able to purchase a Select membership outright, even if you wanted to. It only comes as a side benefit on high-end travel credit cards.

The annual fee for both the personal and business Platinum Cards has been recently hiked to $799 (all figures in CAD). However, both cards feature a $200 annual travel credit, while the personal Platinum Card comes with an additional $200 annual restaurant credit. Therefore, you’re looking at a net cost of $399 for the Amex Platinum Card and $599 for the Business Platinum Card.

Given their annual fees, unlimited lounge access for you and a guest can be an excellent value proposition if you can make use of Priority Pass lounges often enough.

Keep in mind that the Platinum Card and Business Platinum Card have additional lounge benefits in addition to Priority Pass, such as providing access to Plaza Premium and Centurion Lounges worldwide, and it can be confusing to keep track of them all.

Another benefit of these cards is that supplementary Platinum and Business Platinum cardholders are also entitled to their own Priority Pass Select memberships. This can be very useful if you’re travelling as a family or larger group, as having two Priority Pass memberships will let you bring four people into the lounge in total.

The $250 fee on a supplementary card is still much more affordable than the $399 or $599 net cost of getting another Platinum or Business Platinum, although it doesn’t come with the signup bonus, of course. Furthermore, it’s much cheaper than paying for a separate Priority Pass membership.

Unfortunately, upon cancelling your card, your Priority Pass membership gets cancelled immediately, too.

Before moving on to other Canadian cards that come with Priority Pass perks, know that several US credit cards come with Select memberships as well, including:

  • Amex US Platinum Card
  • Amex US Business Platinum Card
  • Amex US Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card
  • Chase Ritz-Carlton Card
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve
  • Capital One Venture X

Most US premium credit card products allow you to bring in two guests for free, unlike the Canadian cards that only allow one guest.

If you dabble with credit cards on both sides of the border, you may find yourself with access to far more Priority Pass memberships than you’ll ever need, and you should prioritize the US-issued memberships over the Canadian ones because of the more generous guest policy.

There are a handful of other Canadian credit cards that include an annual lounge membership as part of their ancillary benefits, although the number of lounge visits they offer is typically limited. After you’ve used up all the lounge visits, you’ll be charged $35 (USD) per visit.

In recent years, many credit card issuers have severed ties with Priority Pass and have partnered with Dragonpass instead. Because of this, the number of Canadian credit cards with Priority Pass as a perk is less than what it used to be.

Currently, aside from the Platinum Cards from American Express, the following Canadian credit cards include some form of lounge access membership:

With Complimentary Passes

  • Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card ($399 annual fee, 10 complimentary visits to Priority Pass lounges per year for the primary cardholder, four complimentary visits for supplementary cardholders)

With Pay-Per-Entry Membership

  • Scotiabank Gold American Express Card ($120 annual fee, 35% discount on Priority Pass Standard membership, access to Priority Pass lounges costs $32 USD per visit)
  • American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card ($599 annual fee, access to Priority Pass lounges costs $35 USD per visit)
  • American Express Aeroplan Business Reserve Card ($599 annual fee, access to Priority Pass lounges costs $35 USD per visit)
  • American Express Gold Rewards Card ($250 annual fee, access to Priority Pass lounges costs $35 USD per visit)

Of these, the Scotiabank Platinum Amex is the most generous, with 10 complimentary lounge visits and four for any supplementary cardholders. With a relatively lofty annual fee of $399, you’d generally be much better off getting an Amex Platinum or Business Platinum for their far superior Priority Pass memberships at a similar cost.

After applying for any of the above credit cards, you can simply call the number on the back of your card and ask to be enrolled in your Priority Pass benefit. For American Express cards, you may also submit a request through Live Chat.

Your card’s card issuer will generate a new Priority Pass membership for you, and the membership card will then be shipped to you in 7–10 business days.

Moreover, for your convenience, and in the event that you have imminent travel plans, you can also ask the agents for your enrolment code. With the code, you can set up your online Priority Pass account right away. Most, if not all, affiliated lounges can be accessed using the Digital Membership Card with QR code found on the Priority Pass app.

Once you receive the Priority Pass card in the mail, you might find it helpful to add a sticker or something to indicate which credit card it’s associated with. As you obtain more and more credit cards with Priority Pass, it can be easy to mix up all of the membership cards since they all look the same.

The Priority Pass program was founded in 1992 and today encompasses over 1,500 airport lounges worldwide. No matter where your travels take you, chances are there’ll be a Priority Pass lounge somewhere along your journey.

Some of these lounges are generic “contract lounges” by independent lounge operators, while others are operated by individual airlines who have signed a deal with Priority Pass to allow access to its members as well.

The Priority Pass website has an excellent Lounge Finder feature, which lets you know which lounges are available to you at the airport you’re flying out from. The website also contains information on opening hours, amenities, lounge location, and any access restrictions in place.

For example, some lounges only allow access for Priority Pass members during certain times of day, or within a certain number of hours before your flight’s scheduled departure time.’

Pay close attention to this information, since it’s often the case that only a portion of the lounges at that airport are actually available to you, depending on which terminal/concourse/wing your flight is departing from. If you do happen to find yourself with multiple lounge options, consider engaging in some lounge-hopping to see which one you like best.

Keep in mind that not all lounges are created equally. For every gem of a lounge in the Priority Pass network, there’s a dud somewhere on the opposite end of the spectrum .

You’ll want to use the Lounge Finder to get a preview of which lounges are available to you on your upcoming trip, and then look for reviews to see how they stack up against each other.

Some of the best lounges in the Priority Pass network we’ve featured include the Jewel Changi Lounge in Singapore and the Fiji Airways Premier Lounge in Nadi.

A few other lounges that might catch your eye include Canada’s very-own SkyTeam Lounge in Vancouver International Airport (YVR) , one of the two Star Alliance Lounges in Paris Charles de Gaulle, and the Aspire | Air Canada Café at Billy Bishop Toronto City Centre Airport (YTZ)

From a Canadian perspective, you’ll enjoy regular Priority Pass lounge access if your home airport is one of the below:

  • Toronto Pearson (YYZ): KLM Crowne Lounge (International), Plaza Premium Lounge (Terminal 1, Domestic), Plaza Premium Lounge (Terminal 3, Domestic), Plaza Premium Lounge (Terminal 1, International) , Plaza Premium Lounge (Terminal 3, International), Plaza Premium Lounge (Terminal 1, Transborder), Plaza Premium Lounge (Terminal 3, Transborder)
  • Toronto Billy Bishop (YTZ): Aspire Lounge/Air Canada Café
  • Vancouver (YVR): SkyTeam Lounge (International), Plaza Premium Lounge (Domestic, Pier C), Plaza Premium Lounge (Domestic) , Plaza Premium Lounge (International), Plaza Premium Lounge (Transborder)
  • Montreal (YUL): National Bank Lounge (International) , Air France Lounge (International)
  • Calgary (YYC): WestJet Elevation Lounge (Domestic/International), Aspire Lounge (International), Aspire Lounge (Transborder)
  • Edmonton (YEG):  Plaza Premium Lounge (Domestic & International) , Plaza Premium Lounge (Transborder)
  • Ottawa (YOW): Aspire Salon Lounge (Domestic/International)
  • Quebec City (YQB): V.I.P. Lounge by Club Med
  • Winnipeg (YWG): Plaza Premium Lounge

One thing to note is that individual lounges reserve the right to turn away Priority Pass members if the lounge is overcrowded. That’s one of the drawbacks to lounge memberships like this – if the program gets too popular, certain lounges might not have enough room to accommodate everybody.

You should also keep in mind that lounges will always prioritize business class or First Class passengers over Priority Pass or other lounge memberships. There’s always a chance that you’ll be turned away if you’re trying to enter a few hours before a flight the lounge is contracted to service.

Things tend to balance out in the long run, perhaps by the lounge expanding its capacity or dropping out of Priority Pass entirely, but in the meantime, it’s unfortunate that some passengers get turned away purely due to space constraints.

A few years ago, Priority Pass began partnering up with establishments outside of lounges, such as restaurants and bars, at various airports around the world. Guests could benefit from a $28 (USD) credit to spend in lieu of having lounge access.

This opened the door to getting lots of free food and drinks while waiting for your flight – and at restaurant quality too, rather than run-of-the-mill lounge snacks and sodas.

This generous practice was clearly quite unsustainable, and as of August 2019, all American Express-issued Priority Pass memberships no longer provide the credit on restaurants, bars, and other “non-lounge airport experiences”.

To enjoy the restaurant and other airport experiences with Priority Pass, you’ll have to either purchase a separate membership or look at some Priority Pass memberships from US credit cards , such as Chase or Capital One.

Getting consistent lounge access when you travel is one of the many pieces of the puzzle when it comes to leveraging travel rewards, and a Priority Pass membership is something that I never travel without.

With the American Express Platinum Card  and Business Platinum Card offering one of the most powerful memberships you’ll find anywhere, there’s no reason not to give it a try and treat yourself to a more comfortable airport experience the next time you fly.

It looks like as a Scotiabank Gold Amex cardholder, you get a 35% discount on a Priority Pass Standard membership, which would cost $65 (USD). Then, any lounge visits price out at $32 (USD).

Great reminder! Scotiabank Platinum offer 10 visits to PPass. What about Plaza Premium lounges? Are they still included?

Bonjour, je vais en Martinique en mai prochain et il n’y a aucun salon priority pass d’accessible si je ne me trompe pas?! (Fort-de-France) Merci

I have two cards (visa infinite privilege & mc world elite) both of which have the PP component. I often fly business so my lounges are covered and usually a better option. What I’ve taken to do though, is share my digital card with friends and family. Not once has their use of a screen shot of my pass been turned down at the lounges access point. Maybe this is not for everyone to “cheat” in this way, but thought I’d share my loophole of how to utilize the cards benefit

I have a Amex Business platinum card. Can I go into the Centurion lounge first then go to another priority lounge. Are they allowed to visit two lounges ?

Yes! This is known as lounge-hopping and can be a great way to spice up the airport experience: princeoftravel.com/blog/the-best-airports-for-lounge-hopping

Hey Ricky and everybody who might comment on this. I am flying to / from LGA (NY) – and there is NO PP lounges there at all. I am flying with WestJet – so the Maple Leaf lounge isn’t free for me as well (I carry many Aeroplan premium cards). As far as I see – my only free option would be the Centurion lounge. Any other options for La-Guardia airport? Thanks.

Nope – I too only visited the Centurion Lounge when flying out of LGA. Thankfully it’s a fairly nice one, and probably better than what an average PP lounge would offer.

How do you add digital PP from multiple cards into one PP app?

You’d need separate logins for each PP membership.

Care to comment Ricky on whether these are Departure lounges only or whether they are Arrivals and Departure Lounges? I’ve experienced different results in Montreal vs Toronto. Sometimes I’ve noticed that offering the Priority Pass Card works better than offering the Amex Card to the Reception Desk.

This one’s definitely a YMMV situation, as I’ve had mixed results too. I’d agree that you’d likely have better results showing your PP card than your Amex.

If you have an Amex business platinum card, do you need a priority pass to access the lounges or can you simply show your Amex card

There’s a distinction here between Plaza Premium lounges and non-Plaza Premium lounges. The Amex Platinum and Business Platinum get you into the Plaza Premium lounges (in Canada and internationally) for free as one of their perks, so you can just flash your card to go in. At non-Plaza Premium lounges you’ll need to show your Priority Pass to get in.

(To make matters more confusing, most Plaza Premium lounges also happen to be a part of Priority Pass as well, and both are abbreviated PP.)

From my experiences, when I go into a Plaza Premium lounge in Canada, I just show my Amex platinum card, but I must have Priority Pass account in the system though. Outside Canada, I must show my Priority Pass or the digital version of it at any lounges. Two days ago, I visit the Centurion Lounge in HKG, used my Amex Plat card. Don’t need to show a PP card.

I thought the Scotia Infinite Visa gives 6 passes per year and that can be used by yourself or family?

Isn’t this what I wrote?

Outside of PP , how do you choose which lounge to go to or know which lounge is available when travelling J on a mRTW? I will be in SIN, DPS, TPE, and NRT next week and wondering which lounges would be the best.

Sounds like you’ll need the Star Alliance Lounge Finder in that case. A quick Google should turn it up.

In your AMEX Business Platinum Card post under Credit Cards menu, you mention that the card member and a guest will have free access. In this post, the card member shells out $27 per visit. I am slightly confused.

Thanks for catching that. The Business Platinum used to charge $27 per visit but changed the rules in early 2018. This article is probably in need of a refresh; I’ve updated that part for now and will probably update the whole article sometime soon.

How do you enrol cibc infinité aventura Confusing process Should be free

According to the CIBC website, you’re supposed to visit the below link to enroll: https://prioritypass.com/en/cibcaventura

Great Post. For the past 2 days I have been trying to enroll for Prority Pass. I have a Visa Infinite Card. Visa Inifinite asks me to contact me Priority Pass to enroll and Priority Pass directs me back to Visa Infinite.

I really don’t know how to register for PP. Can you please guide me?

Which Visa Infinite credit card are you using that entitles you to a Priority Pass membership? The responsibility to enroll you in the program usually rests with the card issuer.

This was really helpful!! I have been trying to decide what card to get since moving to a city where effectively you have to fly out (unless you enjoy a 14 hour drive to the nearest city). What is still unclear through all my research is that we are a family of four, and everything says "you and one guest". Does that mean one guest is the max? While it might be nice to leave the kids in the hall way I don’t think it is a great idea! Sara

Hey Sara, technically by the rules it’s one guest, but many lounges will often allow families to bring their children in as well. But the most reliable way to ensure that everyone gets into the lounge is to have both parents be cardholders of the Platinum Card (or as of this week, the Business Platinum Card)!

Hello Ricky, I found the Priority Pass very confusing and thanks for writing a great piece on clarifying the membership. One thing though, I believe the cost of the Amex Plat is now $699 (effectively $499 after the $200 travelling credit)… I wish I was wrong 🙁 https://www.americanexpress.com/ca/en/charge-cards/the-platinum-card/

Hey Owen, the way you lower the annual fee to an effective $299 is by using two annual travel credits – one in the first calendar year and one in the second calendar year – and then cancelling the card before your first overall membership year is up.

So if you applied for the card in February 2018, you’d use the 2018 travel credit during the year and the 2019 travel credit in January 2019. Then you’d cancel the card before your second year’s annual fee posts to the account, meaning you’ve spent $299 out-of-pocket on the card.

Hope this helps, Ricky

That’s awesome! I didn’t realize it’s per calendar year so I’ll definitely keep that in mind! Keep up the great work! 🙂

Hello Ricky, can you elaborate on how you found which airports offered discounts at restaurants and bars?

I don’t think there’s a central resource for that unfortunately. If you search the airport on the PP website, it’ll let you know if there are any such participating establishments.

Priority Pass Members Now Have Access to 10 More Lounges in the U.S.

The lounge membership program just got a lot more valuable.

journey priority pass

Brandon Bell/Getty Images

Having a Priority Pass membership just got more valuable, as travelers can visit nearly a dozen more airport lounges in the U.S. before their next flight. “Escape Lounges has announced an extension of its partnership with Priority Pass, enabling Priority Pass members to access an additional 10 of its common-use airport lounges across the United States as well as the Escape Lounge at Syracuse Hancock International Airport,” the third-party lounge company shared on its website . Escape Lounges are primarily located in smaller to mid-sized airports, Priority Pass members can now enter with a confirmed airline ticket in any fare class at the following locations:

  • Bradley International Airport (BDL)
  • Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG)
  • John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH)
  • Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP)
  • Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP)
  • Oakland International Airport (OAK)
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) at Terminal 3
  • Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport (PVD)
  • Sacramento International Airport (SMF) at Terminal A
  • Sacramento International Airport (SMF) at Terminal B

There are a few exceptions, however. Priority Pass holders will not be able to access the Escape Lounges in Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Palm Beach (PBI), Phoenix (PHX) at Terminal 4, and Reno (RNO) even with the partnership update. Previously, access to Escape Lounges lounges was restricted to those with an eligible American Express Platinum card or by purchasing a single-use pass, which starts at $32.  Priority Pass is one of the most robus lounge memberships, offering access to more than 1,300 locations in the world. Even better, Priority Pass is a complimentary benefit of many premium travel rewards cards from various banks, including Capital One, Chase, and Citi. These include popular options like the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.   Escape Lounges are often much smaller than the average airport lounge but offer high-end amenities, such as a made-to-order food and drink menu. Based on capacity, travelers can enter up to three hours before their departure.

10 credit cards that offer Priority Pass airport lounge access

Editor's Note

Editor's note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

Accessing an airport lounge can make traveling much more enjoyable by providing a quiet space to work, free Wi-Fi, complimentary food and drinks and sometimes even top-tier amenities like showers, kids' areas and quiet rooms.

While you typically have to pay for access to airport lounges, several of the best travel rewards credit cards include airport lounge access among their many benefits.

Some airline credit cards , such as the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® (see rates and fees ) and the United Club℠ Infinite Card , only get you into their own carriers' lounges.

Others, however, including The Platinum Card® from American Express , the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , allow cardholders to register for Priority Pass Select memberships and enjoy access to over 1,500 airport lounges worldwide that participate in Priority Pass (enrollment is required). Unfortunately, those with Priority Pass Select membership through an Amex or personal Capital One card do not enjoy benefits, such as statement credits toward food and drink purchases, at restaurant locations that participate in Priority Pass.

With all that in mind, here are the best credit cards for Priority Pass lounge access at airports across the globe and how you can use them to make your upcoming travels even better.

What is Priority Pass?

Priority Pass is a network of over 1,500 lounges, Minute Suites, Be Relax Spas and even some restaurants . You can find them at over 600 airports in more than 150 countries.

Many of Priority Pass's participating locations are outside the U.S., though you can find outposts in major airports like Atlanta (ATL), Chicago O'Hare (ORD), Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), New York-JFK and San Francisco (SFO), among many others.

journey priority pass

Some lounges, specifically, that are part of Priority Pass are actually airline-specific lounges belonging to carriers like Air France-KLM, British Airways, Lufthansa or Turkish Airlines, while others are not associated with a specific carrier. If in doubt, check the airports where you'll be flying ahead of time on the Priority Pass site to see which options might be available to you and what amenities they have.

Which are the best credit cards for Priority Pass lounge access?

The following cards offer Priority Pass lounge access, though the number of visits included and guest policies can vary widely:

  • Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

Capital One Venture X Business

Chase sapphire reserve.

  • Citi Prestige® Card
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express
  • The Business Platinum Card® from American Express
  • Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card

You'll earn 5 points per dollar on prepaid hotels and car rentals booked in the Altitude Rewards Center; 4 points per dollar on travel, gas stations and EV charging stations; 2 points per dollar at grocery stores, grocery delivery, dining and streaming services; and 1 point per dollar on other purchases. Cardholders also get up to $30 in annual credits toward eligible streaming subscriptions.

Have you ever wondered how some travelers manage to show up looking rested and refreshed at their destinations? It isn’t just first-class seats and private cars — where you spend time in the airport can make or break your travel experience.

Enter the airport lounge concept: Exclusive spaces within airports that offer a range of amenities and services to enhance your travel experience.

Priority Pass boasts the world’s largest network of independent airport lounges, with more than 1,400 experiences on every inhabited continent. Priority Pass members can enter these lounges any time regardless of the airline they’re flying or the class of their ticket. Enrollment is required.

Here’s what you should know about visiting Priority Pass lounges.

What is Priority Pass?

Airport lounges are an excellent way to unwind before a flight, catch up on work or simply escape the hustle and bustle of the main terminal.

“At Priority Pass, we are committed to delivering both seamless and premium airport experiences that allow travelers to love the entire journey. Our lounges provide a restful escape of peace and quiet, away from the bustle of the airport that provides travelers with the necessary space needed to relax, work, dine and simply unwind”, says Sheryl Pflaum, president of the Priority Pass Americas division, to USA TODAY Blueprint in an exclusive interview.

Many airport lounges are affiliated with a specific airline, which often means that you can only enter those lounges when you’re flying with that specific carrier. In contrast, Priority Pass is a membership program that offers travelers access to airport lounges around the world upon enrollment, regardless of their airline or flight class. Its global presence makes Priority Pass access a valuable benefit for anyone who values peace, quiet and comfort while traveling.

Complimentary food, drinks, Wi-Fi, comfortable seating and quiet areas come standard in many Priority Pass lounges, adding a layer of convenience and flexibility to your travel experience. Fancier locations boast nap pods, private showers, made-to-order meals and cocktails, and even spa services such as chair massages and manicures.

Overall, Priority Pass offers a passport to a more relaxed and comfortable airport experience upon enrollment, allowing you to make the most of your time before departure.

How Priority Pass works

To visit a Priority Pass lounge, you must either be a Priority Pass member or be a guest of someone who holds a membership. Members must present their membership card and a same-day boarding pass at the check-in desk.

Members have a certain number of complimentary lounge visits per year depending on their membership tier. Some memberships offer unlimited access, while others have a specified number of free visits and charge a fee for additional visits.

Priority Pass members are allowed to bring guests into the lounge, although most memberships carry a limit on the number of guests you can invite or charge an additional entry fee per guest. The guest policy varies based on your membership level and the specific lounge.

Most Priority Pass lounges are located past security checkpoints and there can be multiple lounges in a single airport. Busy airports may occasionally be overwhelmed by lounge guests, especially on days with delayed or canceled flights. As a result, some lounges might have capacity limits, especially during busy times.

How to get Priority Pass

Priority Pass offers three tiers of membership through its website and a fourth tier that’s only available through partner financial institutions.

These memberships can be purchased on the Priority Pass website:

Frequent flyers benefit most from the Prestige membership tier. For $469 per year, members get unlimited visits to any participating Priority Pass lounge around the world. Guest fees are $35 per visit apiece.

Standard Plus

Travelers who jetset on a regular basis may benefit from an upgraded version of the Standard Priority Pass membership. The Standard Plus membership tier costs $329 annually but comes with 10 free member visits each year. After that, each member visit costs $35. As with the Standard membership, guests cost $35 per visit per person.

Priority Pass Standard is the basic level of membership, designed for infrequent travelers. With a Standard membership, you’ll pay a base rate of $99 per year, as well as a $35 visit fee per person each time you visit a lounge, whether you’re paying for yourself or for a guest traveling with you.

There’s a fourth tier of Priority Pass membership that’s only available through certain banks. Priority Pass Select is a complimentary benefit provided through a select number of credit cards upon enrollment, with varying levels of access depending on the card. Of course, you’ll still be subject to individual lounge capacity restrictions and may be added to a wait list if the lounge is full.

There are multiple travel credit cards that offer Priority Pass Select lounge access with enrollment. Some offer cardholders a fixed number of visits per year, while others include unlimited access for members and their guests.

Unlimited cardholder visits and unlimited guests

The following credit cards allow you to enter all Priority Pass lounges for free with enrollment in the Priority Pass Select program. You can even invite your traveling companions to join you — yes, the whole crew. This tier of Select membership exceeds even that of the $469 annually-paid Prestige membership offered through Priority Pass, since Prestige members do not receive any complimentary guest invitations.

How to activate your Priority Pass membership

You’ll need to activate your Priority Pass membership before you can use it to enter airport lounges. After you are enrolled in Priority Pass, you’ll receive a membership card with your account number within one to two weeks.

Go to the Priority Pass activation page and fill out the information on the form using your new account number. Once that’s done, you’ll be able to use your physical or digital card on the Priority Pass app to check in at airport lounges.

Where is Priority Pass accepted?

You can easily search for Priority Pass lounges on the website or via the app, which is available for both iOS and Android . Just type in the city, airport or airport code for your desired location and the search function will give you a list of suitable options if available — as well as the benefits, hours, location and requirements for each destination.

Restaurants, suites and other perks

Some airports do not have Priority Pass lounges but offer access to Minute Suites, which provide private rest pods that can be booked by the hour or by 15-minute increments. Priority Pass members can reserve a complimentary one-hour stay, subject to availability.

A handful of airport restaurants and bars also partner with Priority Pass. Members who visit these participating facilities will receive a dining credit towards eligible items on their bill — usually just under $30 per eligible visitor, though the amount will differ depending on the restaurant.

Finally, there are a few Be Relax Spa locations offering complimentary massage services for eligible Priority Pass members. You’ll be able to find these via searching on the Priority Pass app (or website).

Note that access to these non-lounge experiences is limited to eligible Priority Pass Select memberships upon enrollment; those provided by American Express and Capital One’s personal cards do not include this benefit.

The recovery of Chinese outbound and inbound tourism is expected to accelerate in 2024 , due to visa facilitation and improved air capacity.

This joint venture will further strengthen Collinson’s presence in mainland China, where the company first established its presence in 2004, and underlines Collinson’s commitment to a continued focus on and investment in the market. Known for its global expertise in delivering market-leading airport and travel experiences, as well as customer engagement solutions, Collinson’s joint venture with Joyful Journey Group will bring multiple value-added benefits for their clients and travellers, including:

Innovation has always been part of our DNA and we continue to evolve our solutions to empower our clients and partners to remain market-leading in this agile and competitive market. We strongly believe this partnership brings multiple benefits and we’re looking forward to working hand-in-hand with Joyful Journey Group to help elevate every journey into something special.”

Joyful Journey Group Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer, Wang Feng, said, "The joint venture with Collinson is an indication of our mutual understanding and alignment on how we collaborate and innovate for our global travellers. Travel and tourism are industries with highly segmented customers, that span across high-value customers and mass travellers. We will roll out services and operations that align with our respective strengths, to provide our corporate customers with superior, effective and viable solutions in this highly competitive sector. Key Takeaways

  • A Priority Pass membership gets you access to over 1,300 airport lounges and experiences across the world, including benefits like food and drinks, conference rooms and even sleeping suites
  • There are three levels of membership, ranging from $99 per year to $469 per year, and guests can join you for an additional fee
  • Select credit cards also offer access through Priority Pass Select benefits, though these cards' annual fees are typically on the higher side

If you’re an avid traveler , you’ve probably spent time in an airport lounge. With complimentary food, beverages and other amenities, access to these lounges can enhance almost any airport experience.

You can gain entry into an airport lounge by purchasing a one-time pass or a Priority Pass membership. If you’re interested in getting access to an airport lounge with a Priority Pass, here’s what you need to know.

What is Priority Pass?

Priority Pass membership grants you access to a global network of over 1,300 airport experiences that include airport lounges, restaurants and other exclusive amenities. Select airport locations in the Priority Pass network also include suites for napping, spa services, gaming stations and picturesque views. You’ll even find some next-level luxuries available, like a pool in one of the Punta Cana International Airport lounges and a putting green at the PGA-themed Minneapolis-St. Paul International airport.

Averaging anywhere from $30 to $60 a visit, access to airport lounges can be pretty expensive on a one-off basis. It may not be worth paying for individual passes, especially if you bring a guest or travel with your family. For most travelers, especially those who fly more than a few times a year, it’s more economical to invest in a Priority Pass membership for airport lounge access.

There are two ways to become a Priority Pass member. You can either purchase a membership directly through the company’s website or get a Priority Pass Select membership through a credit card issuer that offers this benefit to its cardholders.

Priority Pass benefits

If you’re a moderate or frequent traveler, a Priority Pass membership could provide a great deal of value in terms of amenities and food. Many airport lounges often have one or more of the following features:

  • Charging stations
  • Food and drinks
  • Conference rooms
  • Business centers, including computers and printers
  • Sleeping suites or showers

Depending on the Priority Pass membership (covered more in depth below), you may be able to bring guests into lounges. In some cases, kids under a certain age are free. Guests that aren’t covered need to pay the prevailing rate to enter the lounge.

Another benefit of the Priority Pass includes restaurant vouchers. You can skip the lounge and go to one of 30+ participating restaurants with a voucher for around $28 to $30. Your guest can also have a voucher if they are included in your membership.

Note: Some card issuers, like American Express, no longer provide restaurant access with their Priority Pass Select membership. (The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card recently removed restaurant access as well, in addition to Priority Pass shopping and spa perks.) Others only offer a limited number of lounge visits. Be sure to read the fine print for your card that describes exclusions and limitations regarding Priority Pass Select benefits.

Priority Pass App

The Priority Pass App is an excellent resource for any frequent traveler. It has a directory of all airport lounges and maps for all locations, as well as their offerings and operating schedules. The mobile experience also gives users the most up-to-date information regarding airport dining, retail and spa discounts. Plus, you can redeem offers via the Priority Pass App or through your digital account.

Where to find Priority Pass lounges

Most of the 1,300 airport experiences available to Priority Pass members are outside of the United States. As a result, you’ll get the most benefit from the Priority Pass as an international traveler. If you would like to enjoy lounge access stateside, there are currently more than 40 airport lounges in the United States:

  • Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI), Maryland
  • Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport (LIT), Arkansas

Are Priority Pass lounges usually crowded?

Sometimes, but there are a lot of variables at play. Demand for lounge access varies by country, airport, type of lounge, time of day and whether or not you are traveling during a peak season.

Busy airports at peak travel season could have longer wait times to get into lounges. Popular airport lounges that offer unique experiences, like spa services in sleeping rooms, could have even higher demand and wait times.

There are a few things you can do to get access to an airport lounge, even during periods of higher demand. Some airports have more than one Priority Pass option. For example, if a lounge is overcrowded, then you can opt for an eligible restaurant or even another lounge in another terminal. If you have a long layover or wait before your flight, it could be worth it to venture into another terminal to make the most of your Priority Pass access.

The other option you have is to wait until there’s enough space for you and your guests. Again, this may not be a problem for very long visits to the airport. There are limitations on the time you can spend in these lounges anyway, so waiting before your lounge visit (or having to leave when you still have a wait before your flight) may be inevitable.

What does a Priority Pass membership cost?

There are three levels of Priority Pass membership:

This membership is for the occasional traveler and costs $99 per year. With the standard membership, entry to airport lounges will cost $35 for yourself and $35 for additional guests.

Standard Plus

This membership is for someone who travels a bit more often, such as once or twice per month. The $329 annual membership fee covers 10 free visits to Priority Pass lounges. Once you’ve used those, you’ll pay $35 per visit. The same rate applies to any additional guests.

This level accommodates the frequent traveler and costs $469 per year. It provides unlimited member visits at no additional charge, though guests will cost $35 per visit.

Which credit cards include Priority Pass Select?

Suppose you don’t want to pay for a Priority Pass membership. In that case, there are several credit cards that offer a special Priority Pass membership — Priority Pass Select — as a card benefit. Here are some top credit cards that offer this airport lounge pass as part of their benefits:

Chase Sapphire Reserve: Best for flexible rewards

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is one of the most popular travel credit cards around, and it happens to offer Priority Pass Select membership. For a $550 annual fee, cardholders get a credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, an annual $300 travel credit , significant sign-up bonus and heightened rewards on travel purchases. The real appeal for travelers, though, is the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal, where cardholders can redeem points for 50 percent more value toward travel.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card: Best for flat-rate travel rewards

A relative newcomer to the travel credit card space, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card offers many benefits you’d see with higher-end travel cards. The most notable feature of this card is the high rewards rate cardholders get for using their Venture X card to book travel.

Then, there are credits galore: 10,000-mile anniversary credit, up to $300 in annual statement credits for Capital One Travel purchases, added to the $25 fee credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck every four years, means that you can more than justify the annual cost of owning this card.

Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card: Best for frequent Hilton stays

If you’re partial to the Hilton brand, the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card * should be your go-to for travel and dining. Along with Priority Pass select membership, the Aspire allows you to convert points to cover nights at Hilton properties, airline miles and car rentals. There’s a $450 annual fee, but you’ll receive at least one free weekend night reward immediately, plus one every year after card renewal, as well as a number of statement credits for travel-related spending.

Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card: Best for brand-loyal Marriott travelers

The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card features many benefits, including annual credits, travel perks and status upgrades, like complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status. You’ll pay a $650 annual fee, but the card’s rewards structure is boosted and you can of course enjoy Priority Pass™ Select membership.

The Platinum Card from American Express: Best for maximizing rewards points with travel partners

With The Platinum Card® from American Express , you’ll get the most value by redeeming your points for flights, hotels, cruises and other travel options through the American Express travel portal or its travel partners. Currently, the 80,000-point welcome (after you spend $8,000 on purchases in the first six months), worth $800, could be stretched to $1,680 if strategically redeemed with Amex travel partners . That’s because American Express Membership Rewards points are worth around 2.0 cents apiece toward high-value transfer partner travel, according to Bankrate valuations .

The card also offers thousands of dollars in value in the form of travel and entertainment credits (for a $695 annual fee) and can help you relax at any of the 1,300+ Priority Pass lounges around the globe.

How to make the most of a Priority Pass membership

To get the most value out of your Priority Pass membership, you’ll want to use it as much as you can. That might mean showing up for your flight a little earlier or making a stop at a lounge after you land instead of heading straight to your destination.

Another strategy to use your pass more often would be to plan your flights according to lounge access. If you’re shopping for flights and can use different airports, choose the one with access to a lounge, especially if there’s a lounge you prefer. It can also be useful to pick an airport with several lounges if you are open to visiting more than one or want to make sure you won’t have to wait to get in.

Finally, if you have a Priority Pass Select membership through your credit card issuer, you should activate your Priority Pass as soon as possible. Even though it’s included with your credit card benefits, membership enrollment is not automatic.

There are additional steps you’ll have to take to enroll in the program and receive your membership card in the mail. Most card issuers give you the option to activate your enrollment online. You can even download the Priority Pass app and use your digital membership card.

The bottom line

Airport lounge access is an excellent way to make your travels more pleasant, especially when you might be facing extended layovers or an international trip with multiple legs.

No matter how you come into your Priority Pass membership, the value you’ll get from the amenities and convenience could be worth the price tag — especially for frequent travelers who’ll spend money on food and other services at the airport anyway.

What is Priority Pass?

Priority Pass  is a membership club with a global network of 1,500+ airport lounges. It's the largest independent airport lounge access program in the world. Members can swap busy airport terminals for complimentary refreshments and quiet spaces. Added perks include retail discounts and restaurant credits.

Two ways to get Priority Pass

Consumers have two ways of accessing Priority Pass lounges. They can either buy a membership , or get a free membership with a credit card (but expect to pay an annual fee for that card).

1. Buy a Priority Pass membership

Travelers can choose between three levels of membership which offer different pricing and benefits:

Standard Membership level - for occasional travelers

  • Annual Fee $99/year

Standard plus Membership level - For regular travelers

  • Annual Fee $329/year

Prestige Membership level - For frequent travelers

  • All member visits are free
  • Annual Fee $469/year

In general, membership levels are suited to travelers based on the amount of travel they do.

2. Get a free Priority Pass Select membership with a credit card

Frequent flyers get the most out of this option with unlimited airport lounge access and travel rewards. Annual fees and the cost of additional guests will depend on the card. When used strategically, Priority Pass Select benefits may outweigh the cost of a luxury card's annual fee.

How to get Priority Pass with a Chase credit card

The Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card ®  offers a free Priority Pass Select membership. Cardmembers get full access to every Priority Pass airport lounge for up to two guests (additional guests are $27 per visit). Authorized card users are also eligible for their own Priority Pass Select membership.

Priority Pass benefits

Priority Pass airport lounges are popular because you don't have to fly a specific airline or class to enter them. There are over a thousand airport lounges in Priority Pass's global network . Amenities will vary, ranging from simple to luxurious.

General amenities

Most Priority Pass airport lounges have comfortable seating and business facilities — like work stations, reliable Wi-Fi and plenty of outlets for charging your devices. They may also offer a range of media, like newspapers, magazines and TV. Beverages and snacks are complimentary, and adult beverages may be free or offered at a low cost.

Restaurant lounges

Priority Pass members get dining credits to nearly 30 airport restaurants and bars. Note that the credit may not be applied to tips.

Private mini-suites

Priority Pass also offers access to private sleeping areas in select airports.

Luxury amenities

Some Priority Pass airport lounges have special features unique to that location only. For example, some offer waterfall features, natural green walls, fireplaces, putting greens and even outdoor pools.

Additional offers

There are more than 800 Priority Pass benefits available for members through the Priority Pass mobile app. You'll find airport-specific discounts for restaurants, retailers, spa experiences and more.

How to use Priority Pass benefits

Once you get Priority Pass membership set up, enjoying the benefits only takes few steps:

Activate your membership

You'll need to activate your Priority Pass Select membership before you can use it —simply showing your credit card at the lounge will not work. Activation steps will vary by credit card.

If you have a Chase credit card with Priority Pass Select membership as a benefit, here are the steps to activate:

  • Sign in to Chase Ultimate Rewards . (If already signed in, select your "Total Points" in the bottom left.)
  • Choose the card you'd like to enroll.
  • Select "Card Benefits."
  • Scroll to see benefits, then choose "Travel."
  • Select "Complimentary Airport Lounge Access."

After activating your membership, you'll receive a Priority Pass card in the mail.

Tip: Authorized card users are automatically enrolled. If you add someone to your card after enrolling, call the number on the back of your card to activate their Priority Pass membership.

Get a digital membership card and download the app

Most Priority Pass airport lounges accept digital membership cards. Having this info on your smartphone helps if you ever misplace your physical card. You can see more information  here . If you're an eligible Chase customer, now you can also access your Priority Pass Digital Membership Card in the Chase Mobile ® app. You can find it in the Explore Lounges section under Benefits > Travel.

Visit a Priority Pass airport lounge

Use the Priority Pass app to find a lounge. To enter, all you have to do is scan your physical or digital membership card for the lounge attendant.

How to get the most from Priority Pass benefits

Here are some tips for maximizing every benefit and convenience the program offers:

There is not a Priority Pass airport lounge in every airport. As you shop for flights, include airport lounge availability and amenities in your search. Compare flights and lounges to make sure:

  • The lounge will be open when you need it.
  • Your preferred amenities will be available.
  • The lounge time limits match your trip.
  • Your guests or children are allowed.

Arrive early

Getting to the lounge a couple of hours before a flight means less stress and more time to enjoy the amenities. Check the lounge information ahead of time to see how early you can go in. Some airport lounges restrict travelers to three hours before their flight.

Use your restaurant credit

Check the Priority Pass app for participating restaurants. Upon arrival, let the server or bartender know you're using your card. They will register you and up to one guest, and you'll get a credit, discount or savings (tips are not included).

Read your credit card's terms and the restaurant's terms beforehand. See if they include a guest credit, and make sure you're OK with any limitations, such as no take-out orders..

Use your card's travel benefits

Most cards, like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, offer a host of other travel benefits along with Priority Pass Select. Be sure to take advantage of these rewards, like welcome bonuses or travel credits, along with accessing airport lounges.

In conclusion

To many travelers, having access to airport lounges makes traveling much more enjoyable. Priority Pass is a great option for if you're seeking amenities and conveniences that you won't find anywhere else in the airport.

If you're looking for lounge access in addition to earning rewards for your travel and dining expenses, check out the  Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card.

Ruling in Grants Pass v. Johnson misses the mark on homelessness

Homeless camp tents

MinnPost’s Daily Newsletter

The latest on the politics and policy shaping Minnesota.

Delivered straight to your inbox.

The U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled on City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, which grappled with the growing issue of homelessness and whether cities can criminalize camping on public property when no other shelter is available.

While the ruling, which supports the enforcement of camping bans, has far-reaching implications for how communities address homelessness, it is worth stepping back to look at what we know about homelessness in Minnesota. How can we work toward addressing homelessness in our local jurisdictions and prevent this solvable issue from becoming a national-level court case?

The Minnesota Homeless Study, conducted every three years by Wilder Research, helps tell the story of who is experiencing homelessness in our state and the reasons behind it. More importantly, data informs the types of services and policies that could help — or hurt — those who are homeless. Conducted in partnership with government agencies, tribes, service providers and advocates, the 2023 Minnesota Homeless Study included thousands of in-depth interviews with people experiencing homelessness.

In October 2023, 47% of adults experiencing homelessness were on a waiting list for public housing and another 10% could not get on the waiting list because it was closed. One-third of homeless adults had been turned away from a shelter in the previous three months; a majority of them ended up sleeping in the most precarious locations available: outside, in a car or vacant building, or on transit (62%). From service providers across the state, we have heard again and again that shelters are stretched nearly to the breaking point due to the complexities of this population, staffing shortages and lack of adequate long-term funding.

Decades of Minnesota Homeless Study data show that more people are unsheltered today than in the past. In October 2023, 28% of adults experiencing homelessness had spent a week or more sleeping outside, compared to 13% in October 2009.

People who have spent more time sleeping outside are also those who have been homeless multiple times, have repeatedly moved from place to place and have been homeless for a longer part of their life. The unsheltered population has multiple, complex needs that limit their ability to get housing, especially in a competitive rental market. The majority of people who have slept outside for a week or more have spent time in jail (70%), have a significant mental health condition (69%) or have been in treatment for substance use (61%).

To be clear, the most common challenge to finding housing, regardless of how much time someone has slept outside, is affordability. Half of those experiencing homelessness cited “no affordable housing” as a main barrier, followed by credit problems, having no local rental history and a criminal background.

Michelle Decker Gerrard

In addition to these challenges, people who have slept outside for a week or more experience higher rates of violence and sexual exploitation while homeless (64%, compared with 51% of those who had not slept outside in the previous month). Experience with trauma and violence are shockingly high in both the Twin Cities metro and Greater Minnesota, an issue explored in a recent publication on mnhomeless.org . This is a clear indicator that we need to get people into safe and stable housing, not further punish them for being forced to sleep outside.

Stephanie Nelson-Dusek

Communities across the United States are deliberating ways to address homelessness and preserve the safety and well-being for all community members. Given that people sleeping outside have more complex health needs and larger barriers to finding housing, the answer cannot be creating more obstacles.

To end homelessness, Minnesota must fund housing for people with very low incomes, increase substance use and mental health treatment services, and invest in critically underfunded emergency shelters and supportive services that meet the complex needs of our unsheltered community members.

Neon White, Tchia and a bunch of other titles are coming to Game Pass this month

Journey to the savage planet and annapurna interactive's flock will also be available on the service..

A number of pretty good titles are coming to Microsoft's Game Pass this month for Xbox consoles and Windows PCs, including Engadget staff favorites Neon White and Tchia . Neon White is a first-person shooter and puzzle platformer, wherein you play the part of an assassin taken from Hell to exterminate demons in Heaven in an annual competition. It was one of Engadget's best games for 2022 , and we praised it for being smooth and fast-paced, having complex weapons and having almost 100 replayable levels to go through.

Meanwhile, Tchia is one of our top game picks for 2023 . In the charming action-adventure game, you play the role of Tchia, a young girl who has to find and rescue her kidnapped father. Tchia uses her power of "soul jumping" to take control of animals and inanimate objects in order to solve puzzles, find items, fight enemies and travel to new areas. Both Neon White and Tchia will be available on Game Pass starting on July 11.

Before that, on July 3, Journey to the Savage Planet is returning to the Game Pass library. In the game, you play an explorer for a company called Kindred Aerospace, traveling across galaxies and planets and interacting with alien life forms. Meanwhile, a game called Flock published by Annapurna Interactive will be available on the service on July 16, the same day it's released. It's a multiplayer co-op game, where you play shepherd to a flock of flying creatures. But if you want to play something food-related, the cooking game Magical Delicacy will also arrive on the cloud gaming service on the same day.

Xbox Game Pass Adds 2 Popular Games With Excellent Reviews

Xbox game pass losing 5 games on july 15, the xbox game pass september 2024 lineup is already stacked.

  • Xbox Game Pass has added Journey to the Savage Planet and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 on July 3.
  • Journey to the Savage Planet is a particularly interesting addition on account of being the first and only game that was ever internally published by Google during its short-lived Stadia content push.
  • At least six more titles will hit Xbox Game Pass by July 16.

Xbox Game Pass members can play Journey to the Savage Planet and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 as part of their subscription starting today. These are the first two titles to reach Xbox Game Pass in July 2024.

Microsoft's popular subscription service added 84 games in the first half of the year, averaging exactly 14 new releases per month. The company is looking to maintain that momentum in July, having already announced eight games that will be coming to Xbox Game Pass in the first half of the month.

Xbox Game Pass adds two celebrated games with 'Very' and 'Overwhelmingly Positive' user reviews to its ever-growing content library.

The first two of those additions have now arrived in the form of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 and Journey to the Savage Planet on July 3. The former's debut will not come as a surprise to the most attentive of fans, as the Xbox Game Pass release of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 had already leaked back in June. But its arrival ended up being slightly later than first reported, as it was initially pegged for June 2024.

New Xbox Game Pass Games in July 2024

While Nickelodeon's 2023 fighting game needs no special introductions, Journey to the Savage Planet may not boast as much brand recognition. But this humorous sci-fi action adventure is no less worthy of attention, with both of the July 3 additions to Xbox Game Pass boasting "Very Positive" player reviews on Steam and comparable critical scores. Journey to the Savage Planet also happens to be the first and last title from Typhoon Studios, a Canadian developer that was shuttered following the closure of the Google Stadia Games and Entertainment division in 2021.

In an interview with Game Rant, former Typhoon Creative Director Alex Hutchinson revealed that Google closed the studio on the day they shipped Journey to the Savage Planet . The project hence ended up being the first and only game internally published by the internet giant due to the company's pivot to a different content strategy following the global pandemic, which eventually led it to shuttering the entirety of the Stadia cloud gaming initiative in early 2023. Fortunately for gamers, Journey to the Savage Planet lives on thanks to a publishing deal with Digital Bros subsidiary 505 Games, which was signed a year ahead of the studio's 2019 Google acquisition.

Half a dozen more titles are set to reach Microsoft's subscription service in the coming weeks, starting with the July 9 arrivals of Cricket 24 and The Case of the Golden Idol . Xbox Game Pass will also lose five titles on July 15 .

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is the highest tier of Microsoft's flagship game subscription service that offers over 100 game titles that you can play with a single purchase, making it one of the most outstanding value propositions of the Xbox ecosystem to date.

Review: Standard Chartered Journey Card

Aaron Wong

The StanChart Journey Card represents a major improvement over the hapless X Card in every way- though that's kind of a low bar!

Here’s The MileLion’s review of the Standard Chartered Journey Card,  which has a pretty hardcore origin story.

Picture this- the year is 2019. You’re a bank with big plans to capture the affluent millennial segment. Do you:

  • Design a card that not only attracts new customers, but offers enough value for them to stick around and become lifelong ones?
  • Slap a 100,000 miles sign-up bonus on the bumper and railroad that sucker through to the market- renewals are a tomorrow problem!

It’s clear which option the bank decided on, and there’s nothing wrong with that approach, mind you, only that no one ever got down to thinking about renewal.

journey priority pass

The story of how the premium metal Standard Chartered X Card eventually became the mass-market plastic Journey is a fascinating one— and you can read about it here — but it’s not the focus of this article.

Instead, the question before us is much simpler: should you get a Standard Chartered Journey Card?

Overview: SCB Journey Card

Let’s start this review by looking at the key features of the Standard Chartered Journey Card.

The Standard Chartered Journey Card is a direct replacement for the X Card, so even if you still hold a physical X Card, all your earn rates, benefits and fees will follow the Journey Card from 19 May 2023.

In other words, the Standard Chartered X Card no longer exists! However, for posterity’s sake, I’m preserving the legacy review, just so you understand how bad it had become.

Review: Standard Chartered X Card

How much must I earn to qualify for a SCB Journey Card?

dbs altitude income requirement

How the mighty have fallen. Back when this was the Standard Chartered X Card, a minimum income of S$80,000 p.a. was required.

That’s now been cut to the MAS-mandated minimum of S$30,000 p.a.

How much is the SCB Journey Card’s annual fee?

The Standard Chartered Journey Card has an annual fee of S$194.40 for principal cardholders. You can either opt for a first year fee waiver, or pay the fee to receive 10,000 miles.

The annual fee is waived for up to five supplementary cards (it’s not clear what the fee is for the sixth onwards, but why would you want so many anyway?).

What sign-up bonus or gifts are available?

Standard chartered.

StanChart is running a welcome offer valid for applications submitted from 7 August to 30 September 2023 by new-to-bank cardholders, defined as those who:

  • Do not currently hold a principal StanChart credit card, and
  • Have not cancelled a principal StanChart credit card in the past 12 months

Cardholders can earn up to 45,000 bonus miles, broken down as follows:

Cardholders have the option of paying the first year’s S$194.40 annual fee to receive 10,000 bonus miles . This works out to a cost of 1.94 cents per mile, which is on the high side given cheaper alternatives for buying miles like CardUp and Citi PayAll.

Regardless of whether they pay the first year’s annual fee, cardholders will receive 35,000 bonus miles for spending at least S$3,000 in the first 60 days of approval. That’s the real headline here, as it represents an excellent return on your spend.

Bonus miles are on top of the StanChart Journey Card’s regular earn rates of 1.2-3 mpd, so assuming you spend the full S$3,000 on local, non-bonused transactions, you’re looking at an additional 3,600 miles (S$3,000 @ 1.2 mpd), for an overall haul of up to 48,600 miles.

New-to-bank customers who apply for a StanChart Journey Card via SingSaver by 21 September 2023 will be eligible to receive an extra S$120 in cash:

  • S$100 cash : For approval (no minimum spend)
  • S$20 cash : For spending at least S$500 and making a transaction of at least S$20 with Shopee, Lazada, Taobao, ezbuy, Qoo10, Carousell or Netflix within 30 days of approval

Since I imagine you’d be spending S$3,000 on this card to meet the sign-up bonus anyway, the S$500 minimum spend should be no deterrent. Also note that both the fee-paying and fee-waiver options are eligible for the extra S$120 cash.

Approval must be received within 14 days after 21 September 2023, and cash will be disbursed via PayNow within four months from the date of fulfilling the necessary criteria.

How many miles do I earn?

Sgd/fcy spend.

Standard Chartered Journey Card cardholders will earn:

  • 3x 360° Rewards Points per S$1 spent locally (equivalent to 1.2 mpd )
  • 5x 360° Rewards Points per S$1 spent overseas (equivalent to 2 mpd )

These aren’t the highest rates in the market, though it’s certainly not the lowest either.

All FCY transactions are subject to a 3.5% fee, which is the highest in the market (other banks max out at 3.25%).

This means that using your card overseas represents buying miles at 1.75 cents each .

journey priority pass

However, the Standard Chartered Journey Card is offering a rebate of the usual 3.5% FCY transaction fee for overseas spend made and posted during:

  • November 2023
  • December 2023

No registration is required, and cashback will be credited according to the following timelines:

This is a great little promotion, insofar as it represents an opportunity to earn an uncapped 2 mpd overseas, with no FCY fees.

You can find the T&Cs of this offer here.

Bonus Spend

StanChart Journey Cardholders will earn 7.5 points per S$1 spent (3 mpd) on selected bonus categories, capped at S$1,000 per statement month.

The bonus categories are often confusing to cardholders, and it’s easy to see why. On Standard Chartered’s website, bonus categories are listed as:

  • Transportation
  • Food Deliveries
  • Online Groceries

However, these are somewhat misleading labels. I’ve taken the liberty of reclassifying them based on the actual MCC ranges for greater clarity:

Do note that the examples are  not  exhaustive; all that matters is:

  • the MCC falls within the approved range
  • the transaction is online
  • the transaction is in SGD

Any transactions beyond the S$1,000 monthly cap will earn 1.2 mpd.

3 mpd is not much of a draw, in and of itself, since you could earn 4-6 mpd on these categories with other cards.

When are 360° Rewards Points credited?

The base 3x/5x 360° Rewards Points for local/overseas spend are credited when your transaction posts, which generally takes 1-3 working days.

The bonus 4.5x 360° Rewards Points for local grocery, food delivery, and transport will be credited at the end of the statement period.

How are 360° Rewards Points calculated?

Here’s how you can work out the 360° Rewards Points earned on your Standard Chartered Journey Card.

This means the minimum spend required to earn points is S$0.17, whether in local or foreign currency.

For what it’s worth, SCB has a more forgiving rounding policy than banks like OCBC and UOB, which enables the Standard Chartered Journey Card to outperform ostensibly higher-earning cards for smaller transactions. An illustration is provided below.

If you’re an Excel geek, here’s the formulas you need to calculate points:

For the full list of formulas that banks use to calculate credit card points, do refer to these articles:

  • General Spending Cards
  • Specialised Spending Cards

What transactions aren’t eligible for 360° Rewards Points?

A full list of transactions that do not earn transactions can be found in the T&Cs.

I’ve highlighted a few noteworthy categories below:

  • Charitable Donations
  • Government Services
  • GrabPay and YouTrip top-ups
  • Insurance Premiums

For avoidance of doubt, CardUp transactions will earn points. Standard Chartered is also one of the rare few banks which still offers points for utilities payments, so enjoy it while it lasts.

What do I need to know about 360° Rewards Points?

360° Rewards Points earned on the Standard Chartered Journey Card never expire, so long as the card account remains active.

This is complicated, so bear with me.

If you are converting points to any programme other than KrisFlyer , 360° Rewards Points pool, end of story.

If you are converting points to KrisFlyer :

  • Points earned Visa Infinite cards and the Journey card pool
  • Points earned on non-Visa Infinite cards pool

In case you’re wondering why the Journey gets to party with the Visa Infinite cards, it’s purely a legacy reason. Remember, the former X Card was a Visa Infinite, so Standard Chartered could hardly “downgrade” all legacy X Card points by putting them on the same scheme as the non-Visa Infinite.

It  used  to be the case that all Standard Chartered points pooled, so a cardmember with a non-Visa Infinite card could apply for a Visa Infinite card to “enhance” the value of his non-Visa Infinite points (they enjoy a favourable conversion ratio, as you’ll see below). That is no longer possible.

Transfer Partners & Fees

Standard Chartered has 10 different airline and hotel transfer partners, one of the widest ranges in Singapore.

Transfers cost S$27 each, regardless of the number of points transferred.

Here’s the thing though: Standard Chartered has the most confusing rewards redemption system of any bank in Singapore, period. Yes, I’d go so far as to say that even Bank of China has it better.

Because of the way the system is set up, some people go away thinking:

  • StanChart no longer offers transfers to KrisFlyer , or
  • StanChart no longer offers transfers to  anything but KrisFlyer

What’s going on is that StanChart has two different rewards portals:

  • SC 360° Rewards (for redeeming KrisFlyer only)
  • SC EasyRewards (for redeeming all other partners)

Both portals can be accessed through the desktop online banking platform.

First, navigate to your credit card and click on the ‘Card Details’ button.

journey priority pass

You’ll then see two options:

  • Redeem Rewards Now (which brings you to SC 360° Rewards)
  • View My Rewards (which brings you to SC EasyRewards)

journey priority pass

You don’t need to tell me this is confusing. If you must use two different rewards portals, why not change the labels to make it clearer what’s found where?

Ah, StanChart. Never change.

Transfer Time

Conversions to KrisFlyer miles are generally completed within 1-3 working days. For other programmes, expect to wait up to 5 working days.

Other card perks

Two complimentary lounge visits.

Standard Chartered Journey Card cardholders enjoy two complimentary lounge visits per membership year, courtesy of Priority Pass. A guest fee of US$32 applies after the free visits have been exhausted, and this benefit is only available to the principal cardholder.

Here’s how this compares to other cards in its segment:

SC EasyBill

This isn’t a unique feature of the Standard Chartered Journey Card per se, but all StanChart cardholders can use SC EasyBill to pay the following bills:

  • Individual Income & Property Tax

An admin fee of 1.9% applies, which is sometimes lowered for targeted customers.

To illustrate, suppose you have a S$10,000 income tax payment to make:

  • After setting up the payment, StanChart will pay S$10,000 to IRAS on your behalf
  • Your Journey Card will be charged S$10,190 (S$10,000 +1.9% admin fee)
  • You’ll earn 12,000 miles (the admin fee does not earn miles)
  • tl;dr: you’ve paid S$190 for 12,000 miles, or 1.58 cents apiece.

It’s not a terrible rate, but Citi PayAll offers much better rates during its regular promos, as well as a wider scope of payments.

Grab promo codes

From 19 May to 31 December 2023, Standard Chartered Journey Cardholders can enjoy a S$10 Grab transport promo code (SCCHANGI)  for rides to and from Changi Airport, valid for the  first 2,000 redemptions.

The code can be redeemed a maximum of once per cardholder.

The T&Cs of this offer can be found here.

Complimentary travel insurance

Standard Chartered Journey Card cardholders enjoy complimentary travel insurance underwritten by Allianz, which is automatically activated when the full airfare is charged to the card. Allianz has previously clarified that coverage does not apply to award tickets, unfortunately.

journey priority pass

Do note there is no coverage for trip cancellation and disruption, delayed flights, rental car excess, or personal liability. I personally would not feel comfortable without this, so I’d recommend you purchase additional coverage regardless.

Summary Review: SCB Journey Card

The Standard Chartered Journey Card is a massive improvement over the X Card, but really, that’s not saying much. After all, since when does cutting the annual fee by 70%, adding bonus categories and offering an FCY transaction fee waiver not make things better?

I think there’s nothing wrong with getting the Journey Card to enjoy the initial wave of launch offers— in fact, I’ve laid out a more detailed plan here — but my question is what happens in 2024 after those limited-time promotions cease (and if that isn’t X Card deja vu all over again, I don’t know what is).

Fortunately, it seems like it should be fairly easy to get an annual fee waiver for the Journey ( just like the X Card, incidentally!), so the bigger issue is whether you want to commit to earning points with yet another bank. Standard Chartered has a relatively large minimum conversion block of 10,000 miles for KrisFlyer, though it’s much smaller at 1,000 miles for its nine other partners.

Worth a punt in my book, assuming the hopelessly convoluted rewards system doesn’t make you scream.

this is a leftover from a previous sign-up offer. will get it updated, thanks!

one more question – it states “transactions made and posted” . my hotel check out is 31st October which i will pay on that day. will this qualify or no?

it is impossible to tell when a transaction will be posted, so depends on your luck

Is the first year free waiver applicable to existing SC customers too? Not very clear from the T&Cs but it seems only for new customers

I have applied for SC Journey and wanted to go for the 35k miles signup offer with minimum $3k spend. Used CardUp to pay my income tax to reach to $3k minimum spend but the transaction was deemed invalid unfortunately. I have one question about sign-up gift (which is still being offered in 2024). If I did cancel a SC credit card previously ~10 years ago and I did enjoy sign-up gift then (I recalled is $200 cash) – if I sign-up SC Journey card now, will I get the full welcome miles or will be knocked off by previous $200 cash (in equivalent form of miles/points)? My understanding is if today the welcome gift is $300 cash, then only $100 will be credited after offsetting $200 previous gift. But I am not sure how it works when the welcome …  Read more »
