WWII POW honored by Coloradans on his final journey home

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) -After 82 years, Army Air Forces Technician Fifth Grade Clifford Harley Strickland, a WWII POW (Prisoner of War) from Colorado, is finally coming home. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency confirmed his identification on December 20, 2023.

Strickland enlisted in the Army in April of 1940, more than a year before the United States entered the war. He wrote to his family from Angel Island in California in July of that year, preparing them for a prolonged absence as he embarked on his military journey. However, they could not have prepared for just how long that absence would be.

The attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, marked a turning point. Caught off guard, American forces in the Philippines, including Strickland’s unit, suffered devastating losses. Following the invasion, Strickland was one of over 75,000 prisoners subjected to the infamous Bataan Death March -- a brutal ordeal that claimed thousands of lives both during the 6-day trek, and after.

Strickland succumbed to disease and malnutrition in a Japanese internment camp, passing away on July 29, 1942. He was initially buried in a mass grave alongside several other missing soldiers.

Decades later, exhausting efforts by multiple agencies, along with modern scientific methods, enabled Strickland’s identification. His great-nephew’s DNA provided the crucial link confirming his identity.

“The DPAA they work tirelessly, year-round,” says Commander Sarah Tobin with the American Legion. “They have a large laboratory in Hawaii where they have worked with our partner nations, Vietnam, Japan, Korea, to identify where these mass graves were.”

Today, another one of Strickland’s nephews, Air Force Captain Daniel Strickland accompanied his uncle’s remains back to Colorado from Hickam Air Force Base, Pearl Harbor. Nearly 82 years after his death, Technician Fifth Grade Clifford Harley Strickland will receive a full military funeral at Union Highland Cemetery in Florence, where he will be reunited with his parents and laid to rest alongside them.

“He was not only a prisoner, but he was missing for 82 years, until he was identified last December,” Tobin explains. Now, he can return home to his family.

As Strickland was escorted home dozens of Coloradans stood along I-25, waving flags, and even saluting the funeral procession.

Tobin explains, “I’m just so honored to be part of this. It’s just truly a blessing to be able to finally bring home one of our missing in action.”

Strickland’s return symbolizes closure for his family and honors the sacrifice of all who served during World War II, ensuring his memory endures as an American hero.

He will be laid to rest in a ceremony on Saturday, June 29th, and given full military honors as he deserves.

Crazy town's shifty shellshock was homeless in the months before death, crazy town's shifty shellshock homeless in final months.

Seth Binzer -- the lead singer of Crazy Town -- was homeless in the months preceding his death -- according to his friend and sober coach Tim Ryan ... who tells us he was helping Binzer on his sobriety journey over the last few years.

As we reported ... the L.A. County Medical Examiner said Binzer - aka Shifty Shellshock -- died Monday at an L.A. home. According to Tim, Binzer was living in a tent in downtown L.A.'s McArthur Park, after bouncing from house to house following a recent relapse.

He tells us his wife, Jennifer Gimenez from "Celebrity Rehab" ... received a call last week informing her of Seth's whereabouts and Tim was planning to fly to L.A. to help locate Seth in the park and get him back into treatment ... but sadly, it was too late.

Seth's death came 2 and a half months after Tim last spoke to him. He says Seth was once again struggling ... something the TV star puts down to the soul-sucking, negative Hollywood influences which made it difficult for Seth to prioritize his recovery.

Tim adds the news is particularly heartbreaking, considering Seth was on fire just a year and a half ago ... before his 2023 DUI in North Carolina brought everything to a screeching halt.

Despite his challenges, Tim wants us to remember Seth for having a heart of gold and always helping others get into treatment or sober living rather than helping himself.

As we reported ... Seth manager's confirmed he died from an accidental drug overdose after mixing prescription drugs with street-purchased drugs. The medical examiner's official investigation is ongoing.

From chatbots to superintelligence: Mapping AI’s ambitious journey

Is humanity on the brink of creating its intellectual superior? Some think we are on the cusp of such a development. Last week, Ilya Sutskever unveiled his new startup, Safe Superintelligence, Inc. (SSI), which is dedicated to building advanced artificial superintelligence (ASI) models — a hypothetical AI far beyond human capability. In a statement about launching SSI, he said “superintelligence is within reach,” and added: “We approach safety and capabilities in tandem.”

Sutskever has the credentials to aspire to such an advanced model. He was a founding member of OpenAI and formerly served as the company’s chief scientist. Before that, he worked with Geoffrey Hinton and Alex Krizhevsky at the University of Toronto to develop “AlexNet,” an image classification model that transformed deep learning in 2012. More than any other, this development kicked-off the surge in AI over the last decade, in part by demonstrating the value of parallel instruction processing by graphics processing units (GPUs) to speed deep learning algorithm performance.

Sutskever is not alone in his belief about superintelligence. SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son said late last week that AI “10,000 times smarter than humans will be here in 10 years.” He added that achieving ASI is now his life mission.

AGI within 5 years?

Superintelligence goes way beyond artificial general intelligence (AGI), also still a hypothetical AI technology. AGI would surpass human capabilities in most economically valuable tasks. Hinton believes we could see AGI within five years. Ray Kurzweil, lead researcher and AI visionary at Google, defines AGI as “AI that can perform any cognitive task an educated human can.” He believes this will occur by 2029. Although in truth, there is no commonly accepted definition of AGI , which makes it impossible to accurately predict its arrival. How would we know?

The same could likely be said for superintelligence. However, at least one prognosticator is on record saying that superintelligence could arrive soon after AGI, possibly by 2030.

Despite these expert opinions, it remains an open question whether AGI or superintelligence will be achieved in five years — or ever. Some, such as AI researcher Gary Marcus, believe the current focus on deep learning and language models will never achieve AGI (let alone superintelligence), seeing these as fundamentally flawed and weak technologies that can advance only through the brute force of more data and computing power.

Pedro Domingos, University of Washington computer science professor and author of The Master Algorithm , sees superintelligence as a pipe dream . “Ilya Sutskever’s new company is guaranteed to succeed, because superintelligence that is never achieved is guaranteed to be safe,” he posted to X (formerly Twitter).

journey on facebook

What comes next

One of these viewpoints might prove to be correct. No one knows for certain if AGI or superintelligence is coming or when. As this debate continues, it’s crucial to recognize the chasm between these concepts and our current AI capabilities.

Rather than speculating solely on far-future possibilities that are fueling exuberant stock market dreams and public anxiety, it’s at least equally important to consider the more immediate advancements that are likely to shape the AI landscape in the coming years. These developments, while less sensational than the grandest AI dreams, will have significant real-world impacts and pave the way for further progress.

As we look ahead, the next several years will likely see AI language, audio, image and video models — all forms of deep learning — continue to evolve and proliferate. While these advancements may not achieve AGI or superintelligence, they will undoubtedly enhance AI’s capabilities, utility, reliability and application.

That said, these models still face several significant challenges. One major shortcoming is their tendency to occasionally hallucinate or confabulate, essentially making up answers. This unreliability remains a clear barrier to widespread adoption at present. One approach to improve AI accuracy is retrieval augmented generation (RAG), which integrates current information from external sources to provide more accurate responses. Another could be “semantic entropy,” which uses one large language model to check the work of another.

No universal answers about AI (yet)

As bots become more reliable over the next year or two, they will be increasingly incorporated into business applications and workflows. To date, many of these efforts have fallen short of expectations. This outcome is not surprising, as the incorporation of AI amounts to a paradigm shift. My view is that it is still early, and that people are still gathering information and learning about how best to deploy AI.

Wharton professor Ethan Mollick echoes this view in his One Useful Thing newsletter : “Right now, nobody — from consultants to typical software vendors — has universal answers about how to use AI to unlock new opportunities in any particular industry.”

Mollick argues that a lot of the progress in implementing generative AI will come from workers and managers who experiment with applying the tools to their areas of domain expertise to learn what works and adds value. As AI tools become more capable, more people will be able to advance their work output, creating a flywheel of AI-powered innovation within businesses.

Recent advancements demonstrate this innovation potential. For instance, Nvidia’s Inference Microservices can accelerate AI application deployments, and Anthropic’s new Claude Sonnet 3.5 chatbot reportedly outperforms all competitors. AI technologies are finding increased application across various fields, from classrooms to auto dealerships and even in the discovery of new materials .

Progress is likely to steadily accelerate

A clear sign of this acceleration came from Apple with their recent launch of Apple Intelligence . As a company, Apple has a history of waiting to enter a market until there is sufficient technology maturity and demand. This news suggests that AI has reached that inflection point.

Apple Intelligence goes beyond other AI announcements by promising deep integration across apps while maintaining context for the user, creating a deeply personalized experience. Over time, Apple will enable users to implicitly string multiple commands together into a single request. These may execute across multiple apps but will appear as a single result. Another word for this is “agents.”

During the Apple Intelligence launch event, SVP of software engineering Craig Federighi described a scenario to showcase how these will work. As reported by Technology Review, “an email comes in pushing back a work meeting, but his daughter is appearing in a play that night. His phone can now find the PDF with information about the performance, predict the local traffic, and let him know if he’ll make it on time.”

This vision of AI agents performing complex, multi-step tasks is not unique to Apple. In fact, it represents a broader shift in the AI industry towards what some are calling the “Agentic era.”

AI is becoming a true personal assistant

In recent months there has been increasing industry discussion about moving beyond chatbots and into the realm of “autonomous agents” that can perform multiple linked tasks based on a single prompt. More than just answering questions and sharing information, this new crop of systems use LLMs to complete multi-step actions , from developing software to booking flights. According to reports , Microsoft, OpenAI and Google DeepMind are all readying AI agents designed to automate more difficult multi-step tasks.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described the agent vision as a “super-competent colleague that knows absolutely everything about my whole life, every email, every conversation I’ve ever had, but doesn’t feel like an extension.” In other words, a true personal assistant.

Agents will serve applications across enterprise uses as well. McKinsey senior partner Lari Hämäläinen describes this advancement as “software entities that can orchestrate complex workflows, coordinate activities among multiple agents, apply logic and evaluate answers. These agents can help automate processes in organizations or augment workers and customers as they perform processes.”

Start-ups focused on enterprise agents are also appearing — such as Emergence, which fittingly just came out of stealth mode. According to TechCrunch, the company claims to be building an agent-based system that can perform many of the tasks typically handled by knowledge workers.

The way forward

With the pending arrival of AI agents, we will even more effectively join the always-on interconnected world, both for personal use and for work. In this way, we will increasingly dialog and interact with digital intelligence everywhere.

The path to AGI and superintelligence remains shrouded in uncertainty, with experts divided on its feasibility and timeline. However, the rapid evolution of AI technologies is undeniable, promising transformative advancements. As businesses and individuals navigate this rapidly changing landscape, the potential for AI-driven innovation and improvement remains vast. The journey ahead is as exciting as it is unpredictable, with the boundaries between human and artificial intelligence continuing to blur.

By mapping out proactive steps now to invest and engage in AI, upskill our workforce and attend to ethical considerations, businesses and individuals can position themselves to thrive in the AI-driven future.

Warren Buffett reveals about $600 million of his wealth isn't in Berkshire Hathaway stock

  • Warren Buffett revealed he owns about $600 million of assets apart from Berkshire Hathaway stock.
  • The investor said his Berkshire A shares, worth $127 billion, represent 99.5% of his net worth.
  • He likely keeps most of his remaining wealth in his private portfolio of stocks and bonds.

Insider Today

Warren Buffett just revealed he has about $600 million of personal wealth outside of his Berkshire Hathaway stock.

The famed investor and Berkshire CEO announced on Friday that he's donated another $5.3 billion of his company's shares to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and four of his family's foundations . He noted that the gifts, based on their value when received, total around $55 billion over the last 18 years.

"I have no debts and my remaining A shares are worth about $127 billion, roughly 99½% of my net worth," he added.

Related stories

Buffett's comment suggests the remaining 0.5% or about $600 million of his fortune is in other assets. The financial guru owns about $1 million of Berkshire's cheaper B shares, and his Omaha home is worth an estimated $1.4 million .

Even if Buffett possesses other physical assets worth a few million dollars, it seems likely his private portfolio of stocks and bonds accounts for the bulk of his non-Berkshire wealth.

After all, he's personally owned at least $80 million worth of just three stocks — Wells Fargo , Walmart , and Johnson & Johnson — in years past, ProPublica reported last year based on leaked Internal Revenue Service (IRS) data.

Buffett also sold at least $466 million of stock between 2000 and 2019, and disposed of bonds worth much more, ProPublica said. The story pointed to a private portfolio worth hundreds of millions of dollars just a few years back.

The investor's latest hint supports that idea. It also helps explain how Buffett can afford to only collect a $100,000 salary from Berkshire, and return half that amount to the company each year.

Buffett likely earns meaningful amounts of stock dividends and bond income from his personal holdings, which spares him from having to sell Berkshire shares to pay his bills .

At a recovery high school, graduation is a huge step on a treacherous journey

Students dealing with the fallout of addiction celebrate a joyous yet bittersweet milestone..

Jaiden Alcamisi climbed onto his car to celebrate graduation from Northshore Recovery High School in Beverly on June 12.

L ike thousands of teenagers in Massachusetts, Jaiden Alcamisi celebrated high school graduation this month. But his was particularly bittersweet because he was one of 11 students who graduated from Northshore Recovery High School in Beverly. The school serves teenagers from more than 30 school districts who are dealing with substance abuse disorders or the fallout of addiction in their families. For these students, graduation is a great achievement, but it also means they are moving on from what might be the safest, healthiest place they’ve ever been.

Jaiden came to Northshore as a freshman from Haverhill High School. He was not in addiction recovery himself, but his father had died of a drug overdose, his sister had gone through the program while in recovery, and his mom was incarcerated. As a ninth-grader he was getting in a lot of trouble and doing poorly in school, so Northshore’s cofounder and principal, Michelle Lipinski, agreed to enroll him.

Jaiden Alcamisi in the hallway at Northshore in April of this past school year.

I’m a photographer and first came across Northshore when I covered its graduation for The Salem News a few years ago. I was instantly impressed by the work the school was doing, so I asked Michelle if I could drop in throughout an academic year.

In April, Jaiden Alcamisi and other Northshore students rehearsed at Express Yourself, an arts immersion program in Beverly, for a musical performance they'd be giving the next month in Boston.

I’m amazed by what Michelle and the teachers go through and how they show up every day for these kids — they deal with everything from normal teenage angst to kids overdosing. It’s as if the teachers and counselors at the school are riding waves with these students just to keep them alive. Since the fentanyl scourge hit about a decade ago, more than 30 Northshore students or former students have died from overdoses.

Northshore Recovery High School in Beverly opened in 2005-06. It serves as a treatment center for students who have substance use disorders or are otherwise dealing with the ramifications of addiction.

Even after graduation, Michelle stays in contact with former students, because recovery never stops and there’s not always enough support for these kids. Northshore was the first recovery high school in Massachusetts, and now there are four more. But Michelle is still running the school on fumes. The main grant she gets from the state hasn’t increased since the school opened in 2006. Although districts that send students to Northshore kick in some tuition money, Michelle has to get help from foundations to raise money for things like after-school programs.

Jaiden Alcamisi with his girlfriend, Alison Joyce, outside his home in Haverhill in December 2023.

Northshore doesn’t feel like a normal school — in a positive way. The staff is good at being flexible with students’ schedules, so they can create a feeling of safety. For example, Jaiden was allowed to go to a quiet space in the building without other students to get a lot of his schoolwork done.

Jaiden Alcamisi made a bracelet under the guidance of art teacher Mary Devin last September.

Overall, he thrived at Northshore, graduating with honors. Now, he plans to go into construction or another trade, and he and his girlfriend are expecting a baby.

A few weeks after graduation, reflecting on the school year, Michelle noted that in the fall Jaiden spent afternoons back at Haverhill High, playing on the football team. She couldn’t help but notice, she said, that when he went over there he would wear a Northshore Recovery High School sweatshirt with pride.

Northshore principal Michelle Lipinski, center, smiles at Jaiden Alcamisi after the graduation ceremony while English teacher Michaela Gile at left looks on. Alcamisi's sister Alexis O'Neil, also a Northshore graduate, is in the foreground.
