10 TV Shows About Italy To Watch Before Your Trip

Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy - Best TV Shows About Italy

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read the disclaimer here .

I don’t know about your home country but in the UK, every minor celebrity seems to have their own travel TV shows about Italy. Inevitably, at least one episode features this B-list personality strolling down cobbled streets in a straw hat slurping pasta and sipping chianti. And who could blame them?!

There aren’t just lots of travel shows about Italy focusing on food or culture either. Some of the best Italian shows on Netflix, for example, are dramas set amongst the crowds of Florence or vineyards outside Venice.

If you’re visiting Italy soon, you will no doubt want to seek out as many awesome films and shows about Italy as you can!

Check out these blog posts for recommendations of movies set in Venice , Rome , Sicily , and the rest of Italy .

But if you are specifically looking for a mix of travel shows and TV shows set in Italy, you’re in the right place! Here are some of the best options. There’s a slight UK bias but you should be able to source most of these recommendations wherever you are.

List of TV Shows About Italy: Travel Shows and More

1. travel man: 48 hours in….

English | 11 Seasons (so far) | 30-60m | Watch on Channel 4

  • Season 2, Episode 6: Venice with Jo Brand
  • Season 3, Episode 4:  Naples with Jack Dee
  • Season 3, Episode 5:  Florence with Rebel Wilson
  • Season 5, Episode 1:  Rome with Matt Lucas
  • Season 7, Episode 4:  Milan with Morgana Robinson

Let’s start with not just one of the best Italy travel shows, but one of my favourite travel shows of all time. Presented by Richard Ayoade since 2015 with Joe Lycett taking over in 2021,  Travel Man  usually focuses on easy weekend city break destinations from the UK.

The presenter goes on a weekend break with a famous guest, usually a comedian/comic actor, and they have a lovely time.

So far, the show has covered many major Italian cities with direct flights from the UK. They still have Palermo, Catania, Turin, Verona, Genoa, Palermo, Bari, and Bologna plus some others yet to cover so we don’t have to rule out more Italian content in the future!

All episodes are free to watch on Channel 4  in the UK and some of the series are on  Netflix  for international audiences.

2. From Scratch

English, Italian | 8 Episodes | 60m | Watch on Netflix

Although it didn’t get the love it deserved when first released at the end of 2022, this limited series is one of the best Italian shows on Netflix .

From Scratch  is a show based on the memoir by Tembi Locke (also incredible). She’s an American who studies abroad for a year in Florence where she meets her future husband, who is a chef from Sicily . However, once they return to the US to live together, illness and family tensions seek to tear them apart.

I must warn you that the last few episodes are unbelievably sad (you’ll be ugly crying throughout). But it displays incredible scenery from both Tuscany and Sicily as well as lots of Italian cooking!

From Scratch (2022) Best TV Shows About Italy

3. Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy

English, Italian | 2 Seasons (so far) | 60m | Watch on BBC iPlayer

Hands down,  this  is one of the most popular Italian TV shows if not  the  most popular Italy travel show of all time.

Tucci, who speaks Italian and has Italian heritage on both sides of his family, is on a quest to explore all 20 regions in Italy. He’s deep diving into the dishes, flavours, wines, and heart of everywhere from Bolzano to Basilicata.

So far, he’s covered: Campania, Lazio, Emilia-Romagna, Lombardia, Tuscany, Sicily, Veneto, Piedmont, Calabria, Sardinia, Puglia, and Liguria. Unfortunately, CNN cancelled the show after two seasons in 2022 but Tucci has promised to continue without them. Watch this space!

4. The White Lotus

English | 2 Seasons (so far) | 60m | Watch on Amazon Prime

The White Lotus  was a HUGE hit when HBO released season one in 2021. It’s a drama set in a hotel of the same name in Maui where one of the characters ends up dead. Since it’s an anthology show, season two was transplanted to another White Lotus hotel with an almost entirely new cast in Taormina , Sicily .

It’s absolutely one of the most popular TV shows set in Italy in recent years. And the best part is, you don’t really need to watch the first season to understand this one! Although you really should, they’re both incredible television shows.

Season two will make you want to stay in a five-star hotel, until you look at the room rates, of course. Luckily, there are tons of gorgeous agriturismos and villas in Sicily you can book instead.

The White Lotus One of the Best TV Shows About Italy

5. Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown

English | 12 Seasons | 60m | Watch on Amazon Prime

  • Season 2, Episode 6:  Sicily
  • Season 8, Episode 10:  Rome
  • Season 10, Episode 8:  Southern Italy

Anthony Bourdain was the master of food and travel TV shows. I always end up watching at least one episode from one of his shows before travelling anywhere, because he seems to have travelled  everywhere .

You can’t help but learn something you didn’t expect from Anthony Bourdain. In his landmark series Parts Unknown he shows Italy, and all of the places he travels to, in a different light than 99.9% of travel TV series in Italy.

It’s a real shame he didn’t shoot more episodes in Italy but it’s understandable that he didn’t since this country is well-traversed terrain. The show is called Parts Unknown , after all!

Anthony Bourdain has two other travel food shows,  No Reservations  and  The Layover , with episodes set in Italy. These shows and Parts Unknown  often appear on Netflix, so watch out for them the next time you are searching for Netflix Italian TV shows.

Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown

6. Somebody Feed Phil (+ I’ll Have What Phil’s Having)

English | 6 Seasons/Limited Series | 45-60m | Watch on Netflix | Watch on Amazon Prime

  • Season 2, Episode 1:  Venice
  • ( Season 1, Episode 2:  Italy)

The Anti-Bourdain (in a good way!), Phil Rosenthal is an affable presenter who will inspire you to eat all of the things and travel to all of the places. While making lighthearted ‘my wife’ jokes, feeding the crew, and making his loved ones back in the US jealous of his treats, of course.

Somebody Feed Phil is one of the best TV shows in Venice I’ve ever watched. During my trip to Venice in April 2023, I visited almost all the places suggested during his episode! As a Netflix Original, it’s one of the top Italian TV shows on Netflix too.

If you weren’t aware,  Somebody Feed Phil  started out as a PBS show called  I’ll Have What Phil’s Having . You used to be able to watch every episode for free on YouTube but sadly, it’s been taken down.

I’m still mentioning it as the Italy episode was perfect and you can still access it through Amazon Prime in some countries.

Somebody Feed Phil One of the Best TV Shows About Italy

7. Francesco’s Italy: Top to Toe

English, Italian | 4 Episodes | 60m | Watch Free on YouTube

One of the more random entries on this list, I literally searched ‘Italy’ in BBC iPlayer before my trip to Rome in June 2018 and found this travel show from 2006. Francesco da Mosto is a Venetian architect who drives his Alpha Romeo Spider across Italy, from the north to the south.

This TV show is super helpful if you’re planning a trip but you’re not sure  where to go in Italy . It covers the entire country!

Just some of the things I learned about from watching this Italy TV programme were more about the Fiat car, the British Aristocracy’s history in Tuscany, and the poverty of Sicily. British actress Dame Maggie Smith even makes an appearance!

Even though it’s no longer on BBC iPlayer, you can play all four episodes for free on YouTube.

Francesco's Italy: Top to Toe

8. The Trip to Italy

English | 6 Episodes | 30m | Watch on Amazon Prime

I still don’t understand the  The Trip… format. There have been four seasons so far (2010’s  The Trip  set in the Lake District, 2014’s  The Trip to Italy , 2017’s  The Trip to Spain  and 2020’s  The Trip to Greece ).

But then these series are re-released as films? Plus, the premise is that comedic British actors Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan visit restaurants in these places to ‘review’ them for a newspaper column, which is fake.

They even play fictionalised versions of themselves featuring kids they don’t have in real life. Is this what  Made in Chelsea  is like?!

Regardless, it’s still a fun TV series set in Italy. They follow in the footsteps of the British romantic poets and visit lots of places from Capri to Piedmont .

Although you can watch it through Amazon Prime , this is another show that often hits Netflix .

The Trip to Italy

9. Everybody Loves Raymond

English | 9 Seasons | 30m | Watch on Channel 4

  • Season 5, Episodes 1&2: Italy

Yes, I’m including the two episodes of the US sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond  that were set in Italy on this list! It’s my list, I can do what I like.

Coincidentally, Phil Rosenthal of  Somebody Feeds Phil  was the creator of  Everybody Loves Raymond  so it all ties together. Ray Romano plays Ray Barone, a family man with three kids living in Long Island, NY with his parents living across the street.

I remember watching  Everybody Loves Raymond  on Channel 4 every morning before school. I used to look forward to the Italy episodes in Rome at the start of season five as they would always make me dream of visiting Italy one day.

In the UK, you can watch every episode for free on Channel 4 but I’m sure you can stream them in other places worldwide.

Everybody Loves Raymond

10. Master of None

English, Italian | 3 Seasons | 30m | Watch on Netflix

  • Season 2, Episode 1: The Thief
  • Season 2, Episode 2:  Le Nozze

Raise your hand, who wants to take a break from your life to be a pasta-making apprentice for three months? Oh, and you also get to live in the gorgeous city of Modena, Italy ? Me too, my friend. Me too…

Master of None  is mostly set in New York but the first two episodes of season two are in Italy. There are homages to Italian neorealist film  The Bicycle Thief  and it’s so wanderlust-inducing that it has to be one of the top Italian Netflix shows.

Master of None

Other TV Shows About Italy: A Taste of Italy  (2021),  Alex Polizzi’s Secret Italy (2014),  Alex Polizzi’s Italian Islands  (2016),  We Are Who We Are  (2020),  Luna Nera  (2020),  My Brilliant Friend ,  Hotel Portofino  (2022)

“Somebody Feed Phil” on Netflix is an amazing show if food is also important during the trip. The show contains 22 cities on different continents, and Venice and Modena (Italy) was also beautifully represented. Apparently a new season is also coming. Philip Rosenthal is the creator of “Everybody Loves Raymond”.

Hey Coenraad! Yes, I LOVE Somebody Feed Phil!! I wrote this guide back in the spring of 2018 so I hadn’t heard of him then…

While we wait for borders to open , these fuel-your-wanderlust shows will take you off the couch to Italy, England, Norway, France, and Peru (by magic shopping cart). Can you tell we’re excited about Michelle Obama’s fantastical new global food show, Waffles and Mochi ? It debuts next week on Netflix. Until then, explore the world from home by streaming any of these 26 travel shows and TV shows set in foreign countries.

Waffles and Mochi

Watch it : Netflix

A Sesame Street –style kids’ TV show for the budding chef, Waffles and Mochi follows the eponymous puppets—one a sweet little monster with waffles for ears, the other a sentient pink rice ball—around the world as they seek out fresh global ingredients and learn about healthy eating and cooking.

This show will appeal to adults as much as to toddlers. To start: Michelle Obama costars (this is part of the Obamas’ production deal with Netflix) as a grocery store owner who teaches Waffles and Mochi about the wide world beyond the Land of Frozen Food. Off on fabulous journeys they go—to Japan, Peru, Italy, where they have friendly encounters with famous chefs like Samin Nosrat and José Andrés, as well as special guests Rashida Jones, Queer Eye ’s Tan France, Zach Galifianakis, Sia, Common, and more (technically, Mandy Moore). Start streaming it on Netflix March 16. —Laura Dannen Redman

Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy

Watch it : CNN

Actor Stanley Tucci kept spirits afloat with his cocktail and cooking demos on Instagram during lockdown. When travel restrictions lifted in Europe last year, Tucci traveled to Italy—where he has deep roots—to film this six-episode series exploring food and culture through Italy’s people, cities, and regions: Sicily, Tuscany, Milan, Bologna, Rome, and Naples and the Amalfi Coast.

For those desperately missing Italy, Tucci is the perfect knowledgeable yet curious tour guide, introducing his friends—winemakers, chefs, and authors—who he pokes a little fun at, and taking you on tours, such as around Florence’s Renaissance-era wine windows, aka “little doors of paradise.”

If the show leaves you craving more, buy his two Italian cookbooks— The Tucci Table: Cooking with Family and Friends and The Tucci Cookbook— and preorder his memoir, Taste: My Life Through Food . The series has been renewed for season two. — Annie Fitzsimmons

Who is Lupin? He’s a gentleman thief, a master of disguise, a sort of French superhero at the heart of Maurice Leblanc’s short stories, “Arsène Lupin, Gentleman Burglar.” These early 20th-century Sherlockian tales inspire the new Netflix show, Lupin , starring Omar Sy ( The Intouchables ) as a Senegalese immigrant in today’s Paris who follows Arsène’s escapades as a road map for revenge.

In the pilot episode Sy’s Arsène struts through the Louvre disguised as a janitor, plotting a jewelry heist like a cohort of Danny Ocean. Lupin is also full of lust-worthy shots of the city: a room with a view of Sacré-Cœur; the Eiffel Tower from every angle; the Jardin du Luxembourg in the rain; a bustling café. A heist thriller is only as good as its setting, and Lupin —and Paris—deliver. —L.D.R.

Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip with Sam and Graham

Watch it : Starz

If the popular period drama Outlander didn’t already have you craving a trip to Scotland, this travel show starring Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser in Outlander ) and Graham McTavish ( Outlander’s Dougal Mackenzie) will seal the deal. Even if you’re not an Outlander devotee, this Scottish duo, who are constantly making jabs at each other and themselves, are ideal guides for this literal campervan road trip through Scotland. Their banter is on point (you can tell they’re good pals IRL), and they transport viewers into the heart and soul of the country without taking themselves too seriously.

Each episode focuses on a different aspect of Scottish culture and history. For the food and drink episode, Heughan and McTavish visit one of Scotland’s oldest whisky distilleries and introduce viewers to Scottish seafood. For the sports episode, they try their hand at archaic Highland Games (aka throwing a massive hammer) and playing golf on Scotland’s most hallowed turf. And for the song and dance episode, viewers learn more about bagpipes and traditional Scottish dancing—Heughan and McTavish are game guinea pigs while also offering insights and knowledge into the theme at hand.

I’m not always big on traditional “travel shows,” but I absolutely love this one and am ready to book my first trip to Scotland ASAP after watching. — Michelle Baran

Watch it : Apple TV

West London’s Richmond upon Thames, with its distinctly British cobblestone shopping alleys, parks, and lively pubs, is the backdrop to the story of very American Ted Lasso, played by Jason Sudeikis.

Lasso is an American football coach hired to reboot a Premier League British football team, AFC Richmond. An eternal optimist, Ted is someone you wish you knew—warm and funny, with leadership skills that win over nearly everyone he meets in this fish-out-of-water story.

The Apple TV show isn’t really about sports, though there are plenty of soaring, heart-pumping soccer—football!—scenes. There are love triangles and mishaps, a delightful cast of characters, and the realization that you can do the impossible if you just “Believe,” Ted’s motto. The show has already been renewed for two more seasons. —A.F.

The head of government rides her bike to work: two clues this series isn’t set in the United States. In Copenhagen, everyone rides a bike. Maybe “Danish political drama” doesn’t sound compelling but this is, with a standout cast of well-developed characters. It follows the path of politician Birgitte Nyborg and how demands of her rise to power clash with her family life. Concerns about media news coverage are among the issues making this drama universal. The show, with an 8.5 IMDb rating, originally aired 2010–2013; Netflix plans a fourth season for 2022. — Pat Tompkins

If you’re one of the few who haven’t seen Bridgerton yet (apparently, it’s Netflix’s most successful series ever ), and you miss the U.K., it’s time to settle into Shonda Rhimes’s soapy, steamy Regency-era drama that reimagines the time as one when equality reigns: Black and white people coexist as equals, and the Queen is Black.

It centers on the romance between debutante Daphne Bridgerton and Simon Basset, reluctant Duke of Hastings. Scenic British locations include the Bridgerton family home, Ranger’s House in Greenwich, London; promenades in Bath’s green parks and Royal Crescent; and parties at Wilton House in Salisbury as the Duke’s country mansion. — A.F.

When Eve, a British intelligence investigator, becomes obsessed by an assassin-for-hire, Villanelle, their cat-and-mouse chase leads the characters through Tuscany, Paris, London, and Romania. The glamorous destinations make this a bingeable spy thriller for travel lovers who crave dark humor, cliffhangers, and dreamy settings. —Ciera Velarde

Four Weddings and a Funeral

Watch it : Hulu

This 10-episode series from Mindy Kaling is nothing like the movie it takes its name from, except that there are four weddings and one funeral. London has never looked more magical as friends in their thirties fall in love, break up, and get married across rooftop parties in Trafalgar Square, conversations at the National Gallery and inside dreamy Notting Hill houses, and walks in Kew Gardens.

Like its cast, but unlike so many romantic comedies, it also showcases the diversity of the city through Indian family culture in Hounslow and the multicultural Southall Market. It’s completely addictive, and you might replay the final 10 minutes of the series (a wedding, of course!) over and over again. — A.F.

Un Village Francais/A French Village

Watch it : Amazon Prime

Over seven seasons, this series captures what German occupation of a fictional village, Villeneuve, meant for its inhabitants from 1940 to 1945. Instead of battles, we get the war’s impact on civilian life, an impact that affects everyone. It could have been a soap opera, but it’s not, thanks to complex characters and intriguing stories.

Among those in the first episode are Spanish refugees, a Jewish family, and the town doctor, all coping with the sudden upheaval of life in Occupied France. Travel to a different place and time in these 80+ episodes. — P.T.

Home for Christmas

The first Norwegian series from Netflix, Home for Christmas was filmed in Oslo and the small mining town of Røros, known for its colorful wooden buildings from the 1700s. We see the town and countryside dressed for the holidays, with snow, twinkle lights, and cider at Christmas markets aplenty.

But the festive season is just a vehicle for showcasing the complicated bonds of family. The show follows the up-and-down love life and quirky characters surrounding Johanne, a nurse in her thirties who feels pressure from her large, boisterous family to settle down. But what relationship can compete with her friendships? — A.F.

Call My Agent

Calling all francophiles. For those missing not just France but the language and people as well, this French-language Netflix show is génial . Call My Agent is a witty comedy about a Paris-based talent agency. The central cast of characters brings viewers along as they manage the many moods and demands of their high-maintenance actor clients. (They do everything from intervene when clients refuse to get intimate on a film set to help a client learn to drive for a movie role, plus attend ridiculous soirées to appease these high-strung celebs.)

As the series continues, deeper emotional themes around family, friendship, and love develop. I found myself tearing up (in a good way) by the end of the first season, something I wasn’t expecting at all at the start. The comic relief serves as a wonderful escape and there’s something oddly satisfying about seeing behind the scenes of France’s acting and filming world even if it is a fictional look. — M.B.

Indian Matchmaking

This is a reality show, with all its tropes and gimmicks, inviting us to be voyeurs of the Indian dating world. But Indian Matchmaking is also a fascinating glimpse into the culture of matchmaking and quasi-arranged marriages, for both the singles and families. It follows Mumbai-based matchmaker Sima Taparia as she tries to pair clients both in the U.S. and India; the scenes in India are most vibrant and really make the show worth a watch even if you’re skeptical about the premise.

You feel like you’re sitting right next to the characters in that Mumbai restaurant or Delhi bar as they chat with friends or go out on that first (slightly awkward) date with their match. — M.B.

Watch it : HBO Now , Hulu , YouTube TV

If your family is driving you up the wall, imagine self-quarantining with Succession ’s Roy family. This addictive dramedy centers on who will take over a global media and hospitality empire as the family patriarch faces health issues. Because this dysfunctional family is crazy rich, the series transports us to the most exclusive corners of New York City, a sprawling ranch in New Mexico, and even a castle in England. The juicy Season 2 finale takes place on a private yacht in Croatia, so pour yourself some prosecco and lose yourself in someone else’s family drama. —C.V.

Pour yourself a cuppa and don your finest sweatpants, because we’re headed to Buckingham Palace, folks. Well, no filming was actually done in Buckingham Palace, but Lancaster House, Wilton House, and Waddesdon Manor serve as lavish, convincing stand-ins. Get ready to follow the trials and tribulations of the Windsors and get peeks at country-home castles, private train cars, African tree houses, and passels of corgis romping on the moors. —C.V.

Every time a local musician appears onscreen during this series (and they appear a lot), hearing the soulful jazz they play will transport you to New Orleans. Shot entirely on location in the city, Treme ’s storyline begins three months after Hurricane Katrina and follows its characters—musicians, bartenders, families—as they try to rebuild their lives. —C.V.

Sam Heughan stars in “Outlander,” a drama heavy on time travel and rolling Scottish countryside.

After just one episode of Outlander, you’ll be eager to traverse the peaks of Scotland’s evergreen Highlands and drink a wee dram of whisky. This time-travel series, shot on location in Scotland, creates a fantasy world that feels rooted in a real place. —C.V.

Broadchurch

South England’s Jurassic Coast is the real-life setting for this moody crime drama set in a fictional seaside town. Millions of years of coastal erosion have formed striking rock formations along the craggy cliffs and beaches of the region—the spectacular UNESCO World Heritage–recognized area even serves as an important plot device. —C.V.

Ugly Delicious

Watch it: Netflix

In each episode of this docuseries, the James Beard Foundation award–winning chef David Chang focuses on a specific food (one episode is about fried rice, another about barbecue) and then bounces from country to country to taste local iterations of the same dish. After the first episode (which involves pizza: lots and lots of pizza), you’ll learn not to watch on an empty stomach. —C.V.

Top of the Lake

Viewers will be instantly hooked by Elisabeth Moss’s performance as a detective investigating the disappearance of a pregnant 12-year-old girl. The show was filmed on the South Island of New Zealand, and the titular lake provides an eerie and dramatic background for the emotionally heavy show. —C.V.

The Night Manager

Watch it : Amazon Prime Video

Great writing, fast-paced action, and an all-star cast (Tom Hiddleston, Olivia Colman, Hugh Laurie) make this drama unmissable. The story follows a hotel night manager recruited to infiltrate the inner circle of a corrupt businessman. The show is rumored to be the most expensive miniseries ever made by the BBC, and travel-hungry viewers will enjoy the gorgeous locations, like Majorca, Spain; Zermatt, Switzerland; and Marrakesh, Morocco.

Salt Fat Acid Heat

Chef Samin Nosrat visits culinary colleagues in Italy, Japan, Mexico, and Berkeley, California, to explain how—you guessed it—salt, fat, acid, and heat are the essential elements to master when cooking any meal. Samin’s passion for food radiates through the screen, and you’ll be left hungry and inspired to test out some of her cooking tips—with her cookbook by the same name —yourself. —C.V.

If you want to lean into the current news, Fortitude is one way to go. Set in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard (but filmed in Eastern Iceland), this drama is about a deadly virus that turns infected people into murderers. Winter-travel lovers: Get ready for sweeping icy landscapes, snow-capped mountains, and frigid, rocky beaches. —C.V.

My Brilliant Friend

Although this show follows two childhood friends as they grow into women in postwar Italy, the true star is Naples , with its crowded sidewalks, lively piazzas, and ancient architecture. (In the sixth episode, viewers get to travel to the volcanic island of Ischia, to summer with the characters on beaches lapped by turquoise waters). —C.V.

The makers of Our Planet leave no corner of Earth untouched. This breathtaking nature docuseries allows you to swim with whales, swing from tree to tree with orangutans, and explore the Serengeti, all from your couch. The camerawork is remarkable: You’ll ask yourself “how did they even film that?!” at least four times per episode. —C.V.

Big Little Lies

Oh, what we’d give to be social distancing in one of the spacious seaside mansions on this show. The frothy mix of petty neighborhood squabbles, a mysterious death, and the sweeping shots of the Pacific Ocean makes watching Big Little Lies roughly 10 times better than watching the news. And if you’re inspired to plan a trip to Monterey after watching the show (and, of course, after virus concerns are lifted) , we’ve got you covered . —C.V.

Five Documentaries to Take You To Italy

People at the Spanish Steps in the evening in Rome

Last week we suggested some fun, engaging reads on Italy to pass the time a bit more pleasantly during your quarantine. This week, we’re suggesting five videos to watch that will entertain you, teach you something new, and make you dream of Italy.

From Baroque brilliance to Roman cuisine, from a trip down the west coast of Italy to a culinary tour of Sicily and Sardinia to house hunting in Abruzzo, pick your preferred video or, even better, watch them all, relax and enjoy!

1. Rome: Baroque Brilliance | Rick Steves’ Europe

In ‘eternally entertaining’ Rome, the themed itineraries to choose from are endless. In this video, the great Rick Steves takes us through the heart of Rome, to admire breathtaking Baroque art and architecture, and also to mix and mingle with the Romans.

2. Italy Unpacked Series 2 | In the Heat of the Day

BBC’s Italy Unpacked series sees art historian Andrew Graham-Dixon and chef Giorgio Locatelli travel through Italy, exploring its cuisine and art history. In this episode, the two travel to the southern regions of Campania and Calabria, starting in Naples, with its vibrant street life and Baroque masterpieces, continuing down the coast to Amalfi and Paestum, and ending in untouched Calabria.

3. House Hunters Italy | A Place in the Sun (Abruzzo)

If you’re looking for cheap property in Italy to buy, Abruzzo is a good choice. The video follows the search for the perfect investment in this central region of Italy of two food- and wine-loving friends from the UK. This video can be useful for anyone interested in buying a home in Italy to better understand the Italian market and help you think about all the different elements that go into property research and buying.

4. Authentic Tastes of Sardinia & Sicily | Rick Stein's Mediterranean Escapes

From the BBC’s Documentary Channel, comes the series ‘Rick Stein's Mediterranean Escapes’, a journey across the Mediterranean’s history and food in the company of British celebrity chef Rick Stein. In this video, Rick travels to Sardinia, where he watches local fishermen catch mullet using methods that date back to ancient Roman times; and to Palermo, where he finds one of the best pasta dishes he's ever tasted.

5. Katie Parla: Tasting Rome: Fresh Flavors & Recipes From an Ancient City | Talks at Google

In this talk at Google, New Jersey-born, Rome-based cookbook author and food journalist Katie Parla discusses cucina romana , or Roman cuisine, which is her expertise; she shares Rome's celebrated traditional dishes, innovative street food scene, and forgotten recipes, traces the foundations of Roman cuisine and explains how it has evolved. A must for anyone fascinated by Roman food and the history of Italian cuisine in general. Keep in mind that "Tasting Rome" is a cookbook co-authored with Kristina Gil, an Italy-based food and travel photographer and the food and drinks editor at DesignSponge.

It does take you outside your comfort zone which can be a good thing. ”

I loved this tour. I had two guides, first Sasa in Florence and then Veronica for the rest of the tour in Venice and Milan. Both of them were very friendly and knowledgeable. I was excited to have Veronica as my guide because I met her at a London travel expo and I actually booked the tour because she was so knowledgeable and passionate about her company. Even though I was the only one for the second part of the tour, they still ran it for me and I had such a fun time with Veronica. Florence was such a beautiful city. I also loved Venice and we had excellent weather. It was amazing drinking wine and eating Cicchetti by the water. I didn't know very much about Lake Como but I was so glad to go because it was a highlight for me. It was so stunning! I would actually recommend having one night less in Milan and instead have one at Lake Como. The day trips were very nice. I loved wine tasting at San Gimignano. I bought some of the amazing truffle oil. Cinque Terre was also very beautiful. Veronica was an excellent photographer for me!

Our guide, Ned, was great. The hotel Meininger was clean and comfortable in a college dormitory way, but not very friendly. I asked to reduce the centrally controlled thermostat because I sleep better when it’s cooler, and they said no. The hallways are not air conditioned at all. The rooms get hot during the day and the air conditioning won’t stay on without the key in the slot. I’d rather pay a few dollars more and adjust the temperature to my own needs. The tour has lots of walking but it was enjoyable to see Milan’s highlights. Lake Como was gorgeous scenery, perfect weather, and we had enough time for a nice meal in Bellagio and a drink in Varenna. The train ride back to Milan was standing room only, and hot and stuffy, followed by a long wait in line at the taxi stand. I’d rate the tour guide higher than the accommodations. I suppose that the name of the tour agency (Italy on a Budget) should give a warning that all is not going to be first class.

How to start a travel agency in italy.

To start a travel agency in Italy, there are several key steps you need to follow. Firstly, you must obtain the necessary licenses and certifications required by Italian law for operating a travel agency. This includes registering your business with the appropriate authorities and obtaining liability insurance.

Additionally, it is crucial to have in-depth knowledge of the Italian tourism industry, including popular destinations and local regulations. Developing partnerships with airlines, hotels, and other tourism service providers can also be beneficial to offer comprehensive travel packages to clients. Finally, investing in effective marketing strategies both online and offline will help create visibility for your travel agency and attract potential customers.

How much do travel agents make in Italy?

In Italy, the average income for travel agents can vary depending on factors such as experience level, location, and job performance. While specific salary figures may differ from one individual to another, travel agents generally earn a moderate income that can range from €20,000 to €30,000 per year.

However, experienced agents who establish successful agencies or work as independent consultants have the potential to earn higher incomes as they build a solid client base and generate more bookings. It’s important to note that starting salaries may be lower until one gains sufficient experience and expertise in the field.

Is it a good idea to start a travel agency?

Starting a travel agency can be an appealing option for individuals passionate about travel and providing tailored experiences for others. It offers the opportunity to delve into an industry that thrives on providing people with unforgettable adventures and exploring different cultures. However, before venturing into this field, it’s essential to carefully evaluate various factors such as market demand and competition within the region where you plan to operate.

The travel industry is highly competitive and undergoes constant changes due to technology advancements. Therefore, it is crucial for prospective entrepreneurs to conduct thorough market research, develop unique selling points that differentiate their agency from competitors (e.g., specialized niche services), establish strong relationships with suppliers abroad (e.g., hotels or tour operators), manage finances effectively, and invest in ongoing professional development to keep up with industry trends. With the right strategies, a travel agency can be a rewarding business venture, but it requires dedication, adaptability, and a customer-centric approach to thrive in this dynamic field.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1: depart from new york (jfk), days 2-3: venice.

Our first stop is Venice – a dreamlike city of bridges and canals unlike any other in the world. You’ll be amazed at the splendor of the Grand Canal lined with crumbling, decadent palaces. We will wander the city’s tangled streets, marveling at the colors and reflections that only Venice can offer. Marvel at the iconic St. Mark’s Basilica in the central square. Visit the classic Venetian Gothic-style Palace of the Doges, which was the seat of the Doge, the supreme authority in the Republic of Venice. This striking structure set along the edge of St Mark’s Square and the Grand Canal is has been converted into a massive internationally renowned museum. Get an insider’s look at the last gondola shop to learn about this centuries-old craft. The Gondola master is one of only five remaining craftsman left producing the iconic Gondolas that thrill tourists daily in the canals.

Check out the Peggy Guggenheim Museum showcasing the eccentric Peggy’s private collection of unique modern art at the former villa where she spent many years amassing a huge array of art from legends like Pollock, Picasso and Dali. Venture to the island of Murano, the center of the ancient glassmaking industry and learn about first hand at an authentic Venetian workshop. Fall in love with the splendors of this Italian city in the lagoon that will surely leave its mark on you.

DAYS 4-6: CINQUE TERRE

Welcome to the Cinque Terre, which is one of Italy’s hidden gems! Often referred to as the Italian Riviera, this region is home to five idyllic fishing villages with pastel colored houses perched on dramatic cliffs that plunge into the crystal-blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. We stay right in the center of one of the villages (Monterosso) just steps from the beach! We do not stay outside the towns in La Spezia (technically not part of the Cinque Terre). Instead, we are right in the middle of everything and able to walk just a few steps to the beach or charming shops. In Monterosso we have established strong relationships with the locals from some of the service projects we have done there in the past, and you will see you are treated like family during your stay here!

The Cinque Terre is known for its spectacular hiking trails that connect the towns and we will have the opportunity to hike them for ourselves! On the hike we will enjoy spectacular views of the sea and the vineyards that line the cliffs and be inspired by the natural beauty in this region. During our time here we will also sample local specialties like pesto and focaccia. We’ll dine on fresh seafood and relax on the beach in our seaside paradise.

DAYS 7-8: PISA > FLORENCE

Then we’re off to Florence, with first a stop in Pisa to get that iconic photo of the Leaning Tower. Then it’s time to discover Firenze, the city most often referred to as an outdoor museum. Every turn in this beautiful city reveals a new statue, fountain or fresco. In the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, we’ll see Michelangelo’s famous “David,” climb to the top of the Duomo, and visit the Uffizi Museum, which houses the best collection of Italian Renaissance art in the world. Art and culture are not all that are in store for us in Florence, however. We’ll shop in the city’s famous markets and go to an exclusive event at one of the best leather shops in the city. We’ll enjoy the best pizzeria in the city and challenge ourselves to go all the way on TFT’s famous gelato tour!

DAYS 9-10: TUSCANY > MONTALCINO

No trip to Italy is complete without visiting the rolling Tuscan hills. Tuscany, where we will spend our time at a gorgeous 500-year-old estate in the legendary Tuscan countryside. Bike or walk along the grounds, which are still used as a working cattle farm, and take a dip in the pool before enjoying a sunset you’ll never forget. Here too we’ll get a hands-on cooking lesson from expert Italian chefs, and we’ll also take a day trip to Montalcino, one of Italy’s loveliest cities. We’ll stroll the quaint cobblestoned streets of the hill town of Montalcino. Visit its beautiful medieval church and cathedral and check out the grand fortress before heading to the nearby town of San Quirico d’Orcia for some breathtaking views of this famous region.

For those who choose, there will be an optional excursion to a private vineyard just outside the town of Montalcino to experience the stunning Tuscan countryside in real Italian fashion. This day is a TFT favorite! We have an exclusive invitation to a family’s private Tuscan estate. We will receive a hands-on tasty Italian cooking lesson using freshly harvested vegetables straight from their garden! Enjoy a special tour of the winery where they produce award-winning wine and receive an introduction to this important part of Italian culture.

DAYS 11-12: ROME

We’ll arrive in the Eternal City where a long and mighty history awaits us. As the city streets buzz with antiquity around every corner, you’ll be in awe as we transport ourselves thousands of years back in time while exploring the most important monuments and structures. From the Colosseum, where we’ll try to imagine the bloody spectacle of gladiator competition, to the Roman Forum, which once housed the ancient city’s bustling center and main marketplace. There’s no better way to learn about the Roman Empire than with a view of the city from atop the Palatine Hill–the very place where it all began.

We’ll then fast-forward to the Renaissance, crossing the Tiber to Vatican City and marvel at the massive basilica dedicated to St. Peter. We’ll lose ourselves in the Vatican’s extensive collection of artistic masterpieces from the ancient world to the present day, culminating with a look at Michelangelo’s elaborate ceiling frescos in the Sistine Chapel. We’ll stroll down the Tiber and venture slightly off the beaten path to Trastevere, one of Rome’s hippest neighborhoods, to see the local Romans in action and indulge in some of the best food in the city, including fresh homemade pastas and pizza “al taglio.” We’ll shop on the famous Via del Corso, toss a coin over our shoulders into the Trevi Fountain, and hang out on the Spanish Steps enjoying a classic Roman night of simply relaxing in the summer air of a beautiful piazza.

DAYS 13 – 14: SORRENTO

Next stop on this incredible Italian  viaggio : the Amalfi Coast! Sorrento is a beautiful cliffside beach town featuring brightly-colored buildings jumping out against a backdrop of luxurious green mountains rolling into the turquoise sea. We’ll enjoy our first lunch at one of our favorite hidden sandwich shops, run by an Italian nonna who home-makes her own mozzarella cheese and is happy to whip up a fresh caprese salad for you right in front of your eyes. After that, we’ll go and relax on the beach, soak up the sun, and float in the crystal-clear waves! We’ll finish the day with the first of what will be many amazing dinners of homemade Italian cuisine.

DAY 15: POMPEII

We’ll ride the Circumvesuvio–the train that goes around Mount Vesuvius–to Pompeii, where history will come alive at this perfectly preserved archaeological site. Pompeii was a thriving ancient Roman port town that was frozen in time when it was buried under a deep layer of ash and pumice during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. Step back in time while exploring these towns and learn about the daily life there before the volcanic devastation. Our expert guides will teach you the historic tales of this beautiful city, and you’ll even get to see the plaster castings of the people who were found there.

DAY 16: POSITANO > AMALFI

It’ll be love at first sight with the sun shining above, sapphire blue sea below, and unbelievable views in front of us as we sail down the Mediterranean marveling at the pastel-painted towns nestled along the coastline. With stops along the way, you’ll have a chance to jump into the crystal clear water, swim among cascading waterfalls and in several secluded bays. When we arrive in Positano, you’ll think you’ve been transported into a postcard as you gaze at the quaint hillside town perched up above. Hop off the boat to explore this picturesque coastal gem and wander the narrow streets surrounded by multicolored buildings, blooming flowers, and sweet-smelling lemons. Visit the iconic church of Santa Maria Assunta with its ornate dome covered entirely in tiles. We’ll also stop in Amalfi, where you’ll be able to enjoy the best shopping in the chic stores that line the streets, from handmade shoes and clothes to an abundance of lemon-themed products.

DAY 17: NAPLES

What better way to spend your day than in the very place that pizza was invented? Indulge in the best in the world, served steaming hot straight out of a wood-fired oven. Once you experience authentic Neapolitan pizza, nothing else will compare! Here in Naples, we’ll follow up our tour of Pompeii at the National Archeological Museum, the richest collection of archeological artifacts in Italy, including the best mosaics and artifacts from the ruins. We will also have a chance to hit some of the shops and wander around the fascinating and folkloristic streets of Naples! Lastly, we will have a tour of “underground Naples” and embark on a fascinating journey in the subsoil of the city. Go back in time and marvel at this unbelievable collection of tunnels that have had many different uses throughout the past 2,000 years, from ancient Roman aqueducts to WWII bomb shelters.

DAY 18: CAPRI

Spend your final day just off the coast exploring the exclusive island of Capri. You can go shopping in the ultra-chic boutiques, take a hike around the craggy coast of the island, and enjoy a scenic chairlift ride up to Mt. Solaro, the island’s highest point for breathtaking views and incredible photo opportunities! Our time in the Amalfi Coast will be complete with a final fancy dinner with gorgeous sunset views to enjoy with all of your new friends!

"Thank you for leading this trip and watching over our daughter these past two weeks. She came back from her trip absolutely glowing (she still is - two days later!). She had an incredible experience and literally enjoyed every single minute of the trip. I am sure leading 20 teenagers around a foreign country (anywhere, really) can be challenging, so we are very grateful for your support and leadership. She really enjoyed getting to know you and was very complimentary of your leadership, as well as that of the other trip directors. Thanks for keeping us informed throughout - we loved your notes. This was a life-changing experience for Grace and she has inspired her younger siblings to travel on their own some day." Scott E. Birmingham, MI
"Amazing….Jon had SUCH an incredible experience. He says he felt so comfortable with the staff and beyond the great travel experiences just really enjoyed the company of the staff and fellow travelers. He thought his trip to Costa Rica last year was great and describes this trip and exceeding all of his high expectations even based on that trip. TFT is fantastic at communication, me feeling confident that he’s safe, ease of scheduling… We know he will want to go on as many TFT trips as he possibly can in the next couple of years!" Sunny S. Randolph, NJ
"There are so many amazing places in Italy, it seems impossible to see all the famous and breathtaking sights in one trip, right? WRONG! I had always wanted to travel throughout Italy to get a chance to explore both the countryside of Tuscany and the beaches of Cinque Terre, and this trip was the perfect way to do just that. The activities on this trip ranged from a vast variety of making homemade pesto in a local Italian restaurant in Monterosso to climbing up the steep and slanted stairs of the Duomo in Florence. Whether I was hiking along the breathtaking views of the Cinque Terre trails or attempting to take a clever photo holding up the Leaning Tower of Pisa, I was never found without a smile on my face. The friendships I made on this trip are still strong to this day, and the memories and experiences were unforgettable." Lindsay P. Chicago, IL

Frequently Asked Questions

See All FAQs

Who can go on this program? What kind of teen typically goes on this program?

Teens from all over the world join this program! Typically, our participants are culturally curious  individuals who are excited to make new friends, experience something unique, and interested in stepping out of their comfort zones and expanding their horizons.

This program is exclusively for students who are currently in grades 9th through 12th and approximately 14 to 18 years old. Students living outside of the USA are welcome to join!

Where do we stay?

Our hotels are chosen specifically in safe areas and are well suited to facilitating group supervision. We stay in centrally located accommodations, usually within walking distance of the main attractions. We do not use large, impersonal chain hotels on the outskirts of cities; we prefer to select smaller, family-run hotels where we establish personal relationships with the owners.

In Venice, we stay at a hotel located on a beautiful piazza only a short walk from the train station. In the Cinque Terre, we will be staying in a lovely family-run hotel located only steps from the best beach in town. In Florence, we stay in a beautiful hotel a short distance from the Duomo. When in Tuscany we have the pleasure of staying at a beautiful estate in the rolling hills of the countryside. In Rome, we’ll be staying at an elegant hotel near the central Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore, close to both the Colosseum and the main train station. While we’re in Sorrento, we stay at a gorgeous hotel with a rooftop terrace and stunning views.

For safety reasons, we do not publish the names of the accommodations we use. We do not feel it is safe to publish the name of a hotel where a group of teenagers is staying abroad. After registering, participants and parents are given access to our secure parent website where you will be able to see the names of all of the accommodations for the program.

Do most travelers go on their own?

Yes! In fact, over 75% of students who travel with us choose to come independently. This encourages teens to step further outside their comfort zone and make new friends. We believe that one of the most rewarding and exciting elements of travel is the new friendships that form along the way. When we travel by ourselves, we are bound to make new friends from all over the country and even the world. The best part is, you can travel again with your new friends on another TFT program the next summer!

If you are thinking about joining a TFT program by yourself but you are feeling unsure, please let us know! We have plenty of references from solo travelers who had great experiences and would be happy to chat with you about it.

Can I bring a friend?

Absolutely! We ask that if you do come with a friend, you and your friend(s) maintain openness to meeting new people and sharing this special experience with the entire group.

What do students like most about the Ultimate Italy trip?

Students love that they are able to explore the best of Italy, from the major cities and small towns to the coast and the countryside. The Ultimate Italy program allows them to discover Italy in all its unique glory, and unearth one of the most lovable cultures in the world.

What is unique about the Ultimate Italy trip?

With over 15 years of experience leading trips in Italy, TFT provides an insider access to this Ultimate Italy program in beautiful country with exclusive accommodation at a Tuscan villa, hands-on learning experience at a gondola workshop in Venice and private boat tours in the Mediterranean.

What is included?

Tuition cost includes ground transportation; accommodation; chaperones and guides; program-related activities and admissions; taxes and tips; all breakfasts and dinners.

Not included in cost (this is not intended to be an exhaustive list) : airfare; lunches; visas and visa application fees; personal and medical expenses; activities and admissions that are not program-related or referenced in the itinerary; beverages other than filtered water at meals; participant expenses that are outside of the program description, such as excess baggage fees and damage to hotels; expenses related to unforeseen circumstances, such as transportation strikes and natural disasters.

How do the optional group flights work?

Upon registration, you will be contacted by our International Logistics Team to discuss the program’s flight details. There is no requirement to take the group flight, but there are several advantages to doing so. The group flight is usually chaperoned by a TFT staff member, and it also offers an opportunity for the students to get to know one another prior to the start of the program. Parents are responsible for coordinating transport to the departure airport – however, the logistics team will send out instructions detailing the exact meeting spot and airport point person. For additional information about flights, visit our dedicated flight page.

Who leads the program?

Our staff is a cut above the rest! We seek out two main characteristics in our counselors – extensive knowledge of and experience in our destinations, and a passion for working with teens. Our staff’s backgrounds include living abroad and working in summer camps or other educational settings. Team members are proven leaders and role models, who connect easily with others and form genuine friendships with each student – all while bringing each destination to life.

We celebrate diversity! Our staff represents 49 different nationalities, speak a combined total of 21 languages, and visited 142 countries. Additionally, 80% of our staff lived or worked abroad in their lives. With so many unique experiences to share, you are sure to gain a global perspective.

Our average minimum ratios are one staff member to every seven participants. Each program has one Trip Director with several support staff, depending on the group size. Directors must be at least 25 years old within the calendar year and have prior experience working with TFT.

What are the safety qualifications for our staff?

Our staff members undergo a rigorous hiring process. They receive the same background check as school educators, an extensive training process to go over all safety precautions and protocols, and are required to be certified in CPR and First Aid.  We exclusively hire responsible, multi-talented individuals who are safety-minded and are as passionate about teen travel as we are.

What is the average group size?

We pride ourselves on small group sizes to create a more authentic and personalized experience. Our group sizes fall between 13 and 24 students – the perfect size to facilitate new friendships without feeling lost in a crowd! We believe smaller groups eliminate the likelihood of cliques, and allows for a well-rounded, healthy group dynamic.

How does this program connect to other programs?

Our program dates are designed specifically so that participants can opt to combine trips throughout the summer.  When connecting to another program, your counselor will escort you to the airport on the last day of the program and assist you in meeting your next group at your new destination.

What is the food like on this program?

In a word – delicious! At TFT, we believe food should be an integral part of the travel experience and always make an effort to eat at authentic establishments when we can. What better way to immerse yourself in the culture of a place than by sampling the local delicacies, and we encourage students to do so whenever possible! Just as we stay away from Americanized hotel chains, we try to avoid restaurants with menus that cater only to tourists because every good traveler knows the best food is found wherever the locals are eating!

Italian food is all about fresh, simple ingredients. We’ll sample the best of the “three Ps”- pizza, pasta, and panini! Indulging in these Italian specialties for the first time is a life-changing experience, and we will be there to document every minute of it as you fall in love with the fresh mozzarella, warm Italian bread, mouth-watering prosciutto, and homemade pasta. Don’t forget about gelato! After your trip to Italy, no dessert will ever be the same.

Of course, we are always willing and able to accommodate vegetarians, vegans, gluten allergies, and other dietary restrictions.

Do we ever get time to go off on our own?

Our staff and teens are nearly always together, but we do provide the opportunity to break up into smaller groups to allow for flexibility and customization within the itinerary.

We offer free time in defined safe areas – for example, shopping in a market or exploring a museum. During these times, students remain in groups of at least two and are given no more than an hour. Of course, the counselors remain nearby and available. Additionally, a lifeguard-certified counselor supervises the campers any time they are involved in water activities.

Do I need any vaccinations for this program?

We recommend checking with your family doctor regarding vaccinations and medical advice for the destination you are visiting. For more information, please check the World Health Organization’s website . Upon registration, we provide a list of recommended vaccinations that can be discussed further with your doctor. For Specific questions pertaining to the COVID-19 vaccine, click here .

What kind of visa do you need for this trip?

Any US citizen that enters Europe is automatically granted a free 90-day tourist visa.

When joining a TFT trip from outside of the US, please be sure to check your country’s specific visa requirements.

Do I need to speak the language?

No, our skilled staff members will help you get around and even teach you a few fun phrases!

*What does it mean to be in good mental health?

Moving to a new culture and staying in unfamiliar surroundings without your normal support structure can be very stressful. Sending someone with pre-existing conditions on a long-term exchange program could exacerbate whatever challenges they were previously facing. Additionally, mental health resources are different in every country. The perception of mental health conditions as well as mental health care, support, and understanding are very different in Italy than in the USA. In order to ensure the safety of our travelers, we must be rigorous in our pre-screening of all applicants.

Therefore, we may not be able to accept those who have struggled with mental disorders within the last 2 years and/or are reliant on medication to address their existing mental disorder. Each person will be addressed on a case-by-case basis.

These include, but are not limited to:

  • Mood disorders
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Cognitive and developmental disorders

If the traveler reports a mental disorder on their application, we may ask for a doctor’s note as part of the application. While Greenheart will work hard with our partners to place you, due to cultural norms in the host country, there is no guarantee that even with a doctor’s note, you will be placed.

Unfortunately, we are unable to make any exceptions to these requirements.

Your program fee helps cover the pre-departure & in-country support staff. These fees also aid in providing orientation, logistical support, and insurance. Read more here .

Host families on the Teach in Italy program are volunteers and do not receive a payment or stipend to host teaching assistants. Host families are interested in the cultural aspect of the program and are excited to host you for that reason.

Wondering where exactly your program fee goes? Here is a breakdown.

italian travel programmes

Teaching Assistants will be placed throughout Italy. Schools are usually located in small to medium-sized towns. We have found that these placements provide the most impactful immersion experiences to learn about real Italian life, and participants have wonderful experiences being placed throughout the country.

In previous years, teachers have been placed at a wide variety of placements, from downtown Torino to beautiful farmstead/wineries in the hills of the Piedmont region. Read more about potential placement cities here.

We cannot guarantee any type of school and we cannot accept location placement requests.   Applicants must be flexible and open-minded about where they are placed, and willing to be placed anywhere in the Piedmont region at any age level.

The distance from your home to the school will vary. Some may be within walking distance or a short public transit commute. There is a great public transportation system, and you can purchase a monthly pass for about 38 Euros. If you have a student or teacher in your family, you may be able to catch a free ride to school each morning!

Amazing placement cities throughout Piedmont, like Liz’s placement in Roletto!

While you will arrive with a group of fellow teachers, it’s likely that you will be the only foreign teacher in your school and town. While you can meet up with your friends from orientation on the weekends, you must also be independent and open to being without other assistants at many times.

You will be working alongside an Italian co-teacher, assisting with English conversation skills. You will not be expected to lead a class on your own, but you will be asked to prepare and lead lessons or discussions with your students. You will teach be 15-18 hours per week. This will typically be evenly distributed throughout the week, meaning you’ll work about 3-4 hours per day. Note that this may be spaced out based on your class schedule, so you may be at your school more than 18 hours per week.

italian travel programmes

You will live with an Italian host family throughout the program. This is an amazing opportunity to truly live like an Italian!

Here are a few things to know about host families:

  • Volunteer host families are unpaid – they do not receive a stipend to host you. They are hosting you because they are interested in welcoming you into their home, learning about you, and participating in a cultural exchange experience.
  • Host families are carefully screened through background checks, reference checks, interviews and home visits.
  • Host families come in all shapes and sizes ! A host family may be a traditional nuclear family. Other times, it could be a single mother with kids, or a retired couple.
  • You’ll be matched with a host family based on your mutual preferences and interests.
  • Host families are typically selected by the schools, and often times they are a teacher or student at the school.
  • In some cases, teachers may be placed with two separate host families during the program because Italian homes are smaller than those in the US or Canada. We want to give as many families as possible the chance to experience cultural exchange, even if they are unable to host for 3 full months. Most will switch about halfway through the program.

In rare cases, accommodations may be arranged in a private boarding school dormitory, or an independent apartment, if the typical host family accommodation is not available.

During orientation, you’ll have an introduction to the region and what to expect in the classroom.

Currently, orientation is online. We hope to resume in-person soon!

italian travel programmes

Can I talk with alumni or current teachers from the program in Italy?

Of course! Please join our Facebook community specifically for teachers in Italy, or check out our reviews on GoOverseas ! For even more insight about what life is like on the program, check out our Teach in Italy teacher blogs.

Do I need to speak Italian?

No, but this program is a great way to learn! While Italian language skills are not required, it is highly recommended that you learn some basic Italian skills before you arrive in Italy. People rarely speak English in smaller towns, so learning some basic Italian will help you meet locals.

Oftentimes, if your host parents don’t speak much English, the children in the family will have an English foundation from school and will be able to communicate on a basic level. Of course, English levels of your host families, students, and co-teachers will vary based on your placement.

Will my host family speak English?

This will completely depend on your placement. Some families speak very little English, while other have one or two family members that are fluent in English. You’ll be amazed how much you can still communicate without a shared language!

Will my students speak any English?

Again, this will vary by your placement. The English level will vary based on your students’ age and education track. Most students start studying English at an early age, but as in any foreign language classroom in the world, some students will be more advanced than others.

Why isn’t there a salary or stipend for this program?

This program is designed to provide local schools with foreign language teachers that they otherwise would not be able to afford.

Additionally, it is very difficult for US citizens to obtain work visas in the EU. It’s extremely difficult and expensive (lots of red tape) for an employer to sponsor a US citizen for a work visa, so schools in the European Union are not typically willing to do so. This is especially true because native English speakers from the UK, Ireland, etc. can come and work anywhere in the EU without a work visa.

This program was created in coordination with the local Ministry of Education to fill a need – the schools need foreign language teachers, but they are unable to afford them.

Instead of a salary, all of your expenses in country are covered – international medical and accident insurance, accommodations, and meals. Essentially, you’re living in Italy for about $400 per month, which is pretty unheard of!

Do I need a special visa for this program?

Nope! You’ll enter on the standard tourist visa, which allows you to stay in the country for up to 90 days. You will not need to apply for your visa beforehand.

Canadians, Australians, and New Zealanders are eligible to apply for a “Working Holiday” visa in Italy, which will allow a stay in Italy for up to one year. U.S. citizens do not qualify for a Working Holiday visa and must enter on the 90-day tourist visa.

Can I extend my program for longer than 3 months?

Unfortunately, we are unable to extend the program any longer than three months, due to the 90-day restriction on the EU tourist visa.

Once the program is over, is it possible to stay longer in Italy or travel around Europe?

Your 90 day tourist visa for Italy allows you to travel freely around the “Schengen Area” for up to 90 days. The Schengen Area includes the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland.

This means that you can only be in the Schengen Area for a total of 90 days within a 180 day period. During each 180-day period, you will have 90 days of visa-free travel within the Schengen area. When you leave the Schengen area after 90 days, you must wait another 90 days before you can apply to enter the Schengen area again without a visa.

The program comes right up on that 90-day mark, so you technically cannot stay in Italy or any other Schengen area country once your initial 90 days are up, or travel in these countries before the program begins. However, you could travel to a non-Schengen area country in the region if you’re hoping to stay in Europe longer. Non-Schengen area countries include: Ireland, United Kingdom, Romania, Bulgaria, and Cyprus.

Canadians, Australians, and New Zealanders who have obtained a “Working Holiday” visa may stay for up to one year. You must apply for this visa before departing for Italy.

How much extra spending money should I plan to bring?

While most of your living expenses are covered on this program, you’ll still want to bring money for going out, traveling on weekends, and incidentals. Teachers in the past have recommended bringing anywhere from $850 – $3000 extra for the duration of the program. The lower end of the scale would be for those who do most of their activities with the host family or the school, and who don’t do much travel during the program. The higher end would be for those who are doing bigger trips frequently throughout the program. It’s always best to plan to spend more than you think you will – this way you don’t have to turn down any once in a lifetime opportunities that could come up!

Can I travel during the program?

Yes, you are welcome to travel on the weekends as long as it doesn’t interfere with your school schedule. The program should be viewed as a teaching and cultural immersion program first. We ask that teachers are respectful of their schools and host families. Host families should not be used as a “bed & breakfast”. Families are voluntarily opening up their homes to our teachers. Participate and engage with your family! Cook dinner together, watch football together, and accept any invitations to outings!

Our teachers do travel on some of their weekends, however, and visit places all around Europe like Paris, Venice, Rome, Cinque Terre, Prague, and more. This is a great program to have a group of friends to explore Europe with. Check out some of our travelers in Italy through the eyes of their travel photos .

Can I do this program over the summer?

Because this program involves teaching in Italian schools, program dates are limited to the regular school year semesters when school is in session. We also ask that applicants commit to the entire program length. If your availability is limited only to the summer, or you can only spare a month or two, check out our Italy Teach English in a Homestay program. With host family accommodations, flexible start dates, and various program length options, this program is a fantastic alternative.

I don’t have any teaching experience. Will that be a problem?

Not at all. While the focus of this program is the teaching experience in the classroom, the program is designed knowing that its teachers are not trained or experienced teachers. Many of the students will have a foundation of the English language, and you will not be expected to design your own lesson plans or lead classes on your own. You’ll always be working alongside an Italian teacher, and you’ll mostly be acting as a tutor and assisting with English exercises, pronunciation, and conversation skills. If you have a background of other special skills or expertise, your school may also ask you to assist with those subjects.

Can I choose where I am placed?

Placement matches are made based on a variety of factors, including the shared interests, needs and desires of the schools, host families, and teachers. Schools all throughout the Piedmont region need teachers and we, therefore, cannot honor specific placement location requests. Applicants must be willing and able to be flexible about their placement location. Each placement has its own unique features. Past participants have lived ranging from downtown Torino to smaller towns on beautiful hilltops, to host families with wineries!

Will there be other teachers placed in the same town/ at the same school?

This completely depends on the placement, but most people have friends or other English teachers close by. Remember that everyone is placed in the same region of Italy. There will not be more than one teacher per school, however. We are trying to impact and provide this service for as many schools as possible. If you are in a larger town or city, it is possible that there may be other teachers in the same city. In general, the region is relatively small. You’ll meet all of the other new teachers during orientation, and then you can plan trips to meet up on the weekends.

Can I apply with my friend or significant other?

Yes, you can certainly apply for the program together. However, we cannot place friends or couples together. There will be only one teacher per school, and host families cannot accommodate more than one person. Friends or couples applying together must be willing to live and work separately. We will do our best to place you relatively close to each other, but cannot make any guarantees.

Is there a dress code in the schools?

This will vary by school. To err on the safe side, it’s best to bring some conservative and business casual options. Some schools will be more casual than others, and you’ll get a sense of what is the norm for your specific school once you begin your teaching work.

Do I need to be vaccinated against COVID-19?

Greenheart Travel strongly recommends that travelers be vaccinated against COVID-19. That being said, a COVID-19 vaccine is no longer mandatory for placement.

You still haven’t gotten used to the cobblestone sidewalk beneath your feet; you stumble over the uneven surface again. But you catch yourself and prepare for what should be a simple task but really is an overwhelming challenge ahead—crossing the street. You knew studying in Italy would come with its dangers, but didn't realize crossing the street to get to that can’t-miss pizzeria would be one of them!

Woman taking a photo in front of Colosseum

Sightsee your way through a study abroad in Italy!

You reach the crosswalk, and this time there are no pedestrians to use as human shields. You take a deep breath. The light changes within seconds and the sign shows the green blinking person. Green— verde —means go, right? You steel yourself and step out into the street. Immediately a motor-scooter whizzes by, taking the right turn a little too sharp and a little too fast. You squeal and step back. Looking both ways, double checking and then checking again, you venture a cautious step. Then another. Sprinting like your life depends on it, because it does, you hurry across the rest of the road, narrowly missing two mini-Fiats.

Who knew crossing the street in Italy would be so exciting? But you’ve conquered it!

Crossing the street is just one of the adventures and challenges that studying in Italy for the summer can bring. The Italian people are warm and welcoming as you manage the language barrier. Quests to find the best pizza and gnocchi shops in the area are a delicious adventure. Summer crowds mean tons of interesting people to meet, and gelaterias are an excellent way to escape the summer heat!

You’ll feel absolute awe when seeing the Colosseum or the Pantheon for the first time, a true reward after crowded trains and piazzas . Studying in Italy, you experience the canals of Venice, the vineyards of Tuscany, the cobblestone sidewalks everywhere, and, yes, the creative driving in the streets. And, just like crossing the street in Italy, if you take a deep breath and put yourself out there, you can have life-changing experiences with a study abroad in Italy next summer.

The summer of love… and pizza.

With that in mind, here’s a list of the best summer programs in Italy for college students.

What makes these the best?

GoAbroad specializes in collecting real stories, feedback, and insights from past student travelers in Italy about their experiences on study abroad programs. We take their reviews very seriously, and hope these snapshots of life abroad can help inform and educate future student travelers with reasonable expectations for their own experience abroad. While there are dozens of excellent organizations offering summer programs in Italy, some just rise above the rest.

Typically, the best summer study abroad programs in Italy tick off all of the following boxes:

  • Positive feedback. What do reviews and other alumni have to say about their experiences? Though your needs might not be theirs, you can give some level of credibility to the “horse’s mouths.” Consider their feedback as you discern your options for college study abroad programs in Italy.
  • Clarity and availability of information. If you have to hunt down basic program details, there might be something fishy going on.
  • Organizational partnerships —most are partnered or work with other respected national, local, or international organizations.
  • Resources for alumni , like how to put your experience on your resume or keep building on your time abroad so it’s not an isolated experience.
  • Demonstrated respect and care for local culture, environment, individuals. You can get a feel for this in the photos and language they use to market themselves. No elephant riding, no exploitative photos with children, etc.
  • Level of support and assistance. Do they email you back promptly? Are you confident in their safety rating and the level of support you’ll get before, during, AND after your program?
  • Respect within your field of study. Consider a program that makes people that you look up to go “Wow.”

  • The First MICHELIN Key Hotels: All the Keys in Italy

The MICHELIN Guide announces top honors for Italian hotels in 2024.

MICHELIN Keys Florence Italy Hotels Rome

italian travel programmes

On May 7, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide revealed the brand new One, Two, and Three Key distinctions for the most outstanding hotels in Italy. This announcement comes four years into a comprehensive refresh of our hotel selection. The MICHELIN Guide now includes over 5,000 hotels across the world, and not a single one is simply a room for the night. These are places that significantly add to your experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting. Which brings us back to the Keys. The culmination of countless hours of evaluation by our team of experts, the Key hotels below represent the highlights of our broader selection. Like the MICHELIN Stars for restaurants, the MICHELIN Keys are our most outstanding hotels. In total, the 2024 MICHELIN Guide hotel selection in Italy includes 8 Three Key hotels, 31 Two Key hotels, and 107 One Key hotels. Want to know more about the MICHELIN Key? Velona's Jungle Luxury Suites — Florence

Under 10 Rooms: The Tiny Keys Reign Across Italy

Expect: Bold, proprietor-driven design themes, special experiences, and hyper-personal service. The tiny hotels that pepper the cities and countryside might get lost on lists full of castles and palazzos, but these little boutiques with ten rooms or less are some the most creative and satisfying accommodations in all of Italy. It’s a given that you’ll find places like these in the Tuscan countryside ( Siena House and Follonico Suite B&B — both with just six bedrooms), but don’t miss the gems in the cities. Vico Milano is a seven room space filled with dazzling design furniture and contemporary art. Velona’s Jungle Luxury Suites is a pocket-sized jungle-themed luxury boutique full of animal-print upholstery and peacock-feather prints. Both are independently owned and marvelously compact.

A Closer Look: 10 Key Hotels with 10 Rooms or Less in Italy

Lupaia — Torrita di Siena

Pick One: A Castle or a Farmhouse Hotel in Tuscany

Two iconic options in Tuscany earned a bevy of Keys: the castle hotel and the classic farmhouse. The former speaks for itself — ancient fortifications that were once private residences, built to house the handsomely titled, and fortified against attack. Towers, turrets, and crenellations give way to handsome wine cellars and vineyard views. Look to Castello di Casole for a masterclass in how to convert a thousand-year-old estate into a historically preserved, contemporarily luxurious hotel. Meanwhile, the motif of the Tuscan farmhouse has been emulated throughout the world — but there’s nothing like the real thing. Hotels like Lupaia and Conti di San Bonifacio make farmhouse charm into nothing less than a work of art.

Make Your Choice: The Key Decision in Italy

Le Sirenuse - Positano

High Drama: Hotels on the Seaside of the Amalfi Coast

It’s profoundly satisfying to us that one of the most impressive places in the world has among the world’s most impressive hotels. On the Amalfi Coast, where natural cliffsides tumble down into an endless Italian sea, hotels like Palazzo Pascal and Le Sirenuse host guests in miraculous buildings that served for centuries as aristocratic homes over the water. I’m Heading to Italy This Summer and Packing These 10 Flattering Finds for $40 or Less

Breezy dresses, body-contouring tops, and linen shorts start at $13.

italian travel programmes

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

Working smarter, not harder, is always my motto when planning my travel wardrobe , especially if I’m heading somewhere for longer than a week. This summer, I’m jet-setting to Italy for my second trip there, and I have definitely learned a lot about what to pack since my last visit.

Figuring out the right combination of clothing pieces to make the most of my luggage space is definitely at the top of my mind. I found so many flattering finds on Walmart ’s virtual racks for $40 or less that are making it into my lineup.

This time, I’m leaning into breezy dresses that can be worn on multiple occasions, comfortable and practical layering basics , and airy shorts that will work for exploring a new city and as a cover-up over bathing suits. Keep scrolling to see the 10 pieces I’m eyeing to expand my Italian wardrobe.

Writer-Approved Travel Clothing for Italy

  • Scoop Cutout Poplin Dress with Puff Sleeves , $30
  • Scoop Asymmetrical Tube Dress , $38
  • Time and Tru Linen Blend Smocked Waist Shorts , $13
  • Scoop Contour One Shoulder Tank Top , $15
  • Time and Tru Fray Hem Shorts , $13
  • Scoop Keyhole Halter Neck Dress , $40
  • Sofia Jeans by Sofia Vergara Lightweight High-Rise Utility Shorts , $21
  • Time and Tru Midi Double Cloth Dress , $20
  • Rosvigor High-Waisted Athletic Shorts , $17 (originally $36)
  • Sofia Jeans by Sofia Vergara High-Rise Fray Hem Shorts , $20

Scoop Cutout Poplin Dress with Puff Sleeves

Nothing beats the breathability of a dress in the summer, so I’m grabbing this poplin style with side cutouts for dinners. I always gravitate toward a puffy sleeve since it adds a unique structural touch, and I’m snagging it in white to pop against my freshly Italian sunkissed skin. One shopper bought the dress in two different colors since it’s so flattering, as it also comes in black, black floral, and red.

Scoop Asymmetrical Tube Dress

This tube dress is a great base layer since I’m often uncertain about whether I’ll be hot or chilly when out and about. I can tie a sweater over my shoulders for a preppy touch and toss it fully on if I get cold inside restaurants or museums. The wrinkle-resistant material will definitely pack well, and the versatile dress is ideal for wearing during the day with sneakers and at night with sandals.

Time and Tru Linen Blend Smocked Waist Shorts

Linen is always my go-to airy fabric in the hotter months, and these smocked waist shorts in a pinstripe pattern scream coastal style. The $13 bottoms feature a relaxed fit that’ll be comfortable throughout long days of walking, and they double as a genius swimsuit coverup for boating excursions or trips to the beach.

Scoop Contour One Shoulder Tank Top

I always like to pack a variety of basic tops when traveling since I can wear them more than once. A one-shoulder silhouette is a fresh take on a tank top, and this body-contouring option features a blend of nylon, spandex, and polyester for stretchy comfort. It is the perfect choice for low-lift outfits that can be pieced together with a skirt or pair of shorts.

Keep scrolling for more items I’m eyeing for my Italian getaway for $40 and under at Walmart .

Southwest Airlines quietly rolls out a new compensation program for flight delays

Southwest Airlines said it launched a compensation program for  flight delays as part of a $140 million U.S. Department of Transportation settlement over the carrier's meltdown in December 2022 during a busy holiday travel period.

Southwest agreed in December 2023 to provide $90 million in travel vouchers of $75 or more over three years to passengers delayed at least three hours getting to their final destinations because of an airline-caused issue or cancellation and to start the program by April 30.

The airline said Monday it had quietly launched the program on April 16 and has already heard from a few thousand customers seeking vouchers.

The airline agreed to the compensation program after the holiday meltdown that resulted in 16,900 flight cancellations and stranded 2 million passengers. The settlement included a $35 million cash fine.

Will Southwest start assigning seats? CEO says the airline is weighing changes

A massive winter storm in December 2022 and subsequent chaos prompted travel horror stories such as people missing funerals or long-awaited holiday gatherings, passengers with canceled flights forced to make cross-country drives of 17 or more hours and some cancer patients being unable to get treatment.

The delay compensation program is part of the Biden administration's aggressive efforts to get tough on airlines as it aims to require new passenger compensation. Vouchers will be awarded "upon request," Southwest said.

Southwest CEO Bob Jordan said in December that, given its operational performance, the $30 million in vouchers annually was "the right number" to commit to.

Asked if Southwest would end the program after three years, Jordan said consumer programs "rarely change or go away."

Rival U.S. airlines have not put in place similar programs and do not yet face a mandate to do so.

Enough with airline hidden fees: DOT rules take aim at 'corporate rip-offs'

President Joe Biden said last May that the DOT would propose new rules requiring airlines to compensate passengers with cash for significant controllable flight delays or cancellations by the end of the year. The DOT has not issued its proposal, and Congress has declined to mandate compensation for delays in a pending aviation reform bill.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said last week Southwest under the delay compensation requirement will "really lead the market and it will be very interesting to see how other airlines respond – not as punishment but by way of competition."

The DOT in 2022 asked carriers if they would pay at least $100  for delays of at least three hours  caused by airlines and none agreed.

Most carriers – including Southwest – voluntarily committed in August 2022 to provide hotels, meals and ground transportation for airline-caused delays or cancellations but resisted providing cash compensation as is required in the European Union .
