When you go on a safari, you'll be spending a lot of time outside, whether you're walking through brush, hiking, or riding in the back of a vehicle. You won't have much time or opportunity to change your clothes, so it's important to dress appropriately. Choose colors that match your surroundings and also don't attract bugs. You should also choose your clothing based on where in Africa you'll be. Quality clothing might be a little more expensive, but it's worth the investment.

Choosing Colors

Step 1 Wear khakis, browns, and tans during dry season.

  • Sticking to these colors also helps to hide dirt. Your clothes will likely get dirty as you hike through brush or travel along dusty roads, and if your wardrobe is made up of mostly browns, tans, or khaki, the dirt will be hidden better. [2] X Research source

Step 2 Wear browns and greens during rainy season.

Dressing Based on Your Safari Destination

Step 1 Dress in layers in southern Africa.

Selecting Quality Clothing

Step 1 Pick clothing with lots of pockets.

Choosing Accessories

Step 1 Select a headband that prevents sweat and dust.

  • Companies like Columbia have these types of headbands.

Step 2 Pick a sunhat.

Expert Q&A

  • Stick to packing casual clothes. Even if you're staying in the highest-rated safari lodges or hotels in Africa, the code is still pretty casual. Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 0
  • Try not to over pack. Make sure you pack enough underwear and socks to last you the trip, but you really only need a few shirts and 1 or 2 pairs of pants and 1 or 2 pairs of shorts. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

Safari Outfit Ideas to Pack When You Finally Take That Dream Trip

By Mara Balagtas and Andrea Whittle

Packing for a safari is a science: You need to be prepared for changing temperatures, high sun, and plenty of dust, as well as cocktail hour and a dip in the pool—and all of your safari outfits, plus toiletries and gear, have to fit in a soft-sided duffel with a strict weight limit. We polled our resident experts and trusted specialists for safari outfit ideas, whether you're staying in a luxe tented camp on the Okavango Delta in Botwsana or traversing the Sabi Sands game reserve in South Africa . Note that most safari outfitters will provide travelers with an itemized packing list, so check with yours about specifics (as well as any vaccines or medications you might need) before you go.

Getting there

Most safari camps are only accessible by small propeller planes, which don’t allow hard-sided luggage. Pack everything in soft duffels that can be easily tossed into the back of the plane or the back of a Land Rover (weight limits are strict, too, so make sure you check with the outfitter before you go). Our advice: bring along some low-tech entertainment and have your camera handy for the views. Go Pro's Hero 9 has built-in tech to help keep any footage you shoot looking steady, making it perfect for bumpy rides.

On a game drive

Specialists disagree on the details, but you’re generally advised to avoid red and white clothing (as well as anything Day-Glo) while on game drives because it can attract insects or make you more visible to certain animals. Instead, go for clothing in shades of khaki, brown, and olive, which help you to blend in with the environment and hide dust and dirt, and pair it with some sneakers with a decent tread (on most safaris, you don’t need serious hiking boots). You’ll also want to pack plenty of layers since it can be chilly in the early morning, and blazing hot a few hours later. Don't forget a hat to help keep your skin protected under the harsh midday sun.

Around camp

You’ll want casual, cozy clothes to wear while you’re lounging around camp in between your daily excursions. A durable sandal with some grip will work just fine, and don’t forget a bathing suit —many lodges or tented camps have gorgeous pools.

Safari chic dinner

Some travelers like to have a more dressed-up option for cocktail hour and dinner back at camp—think flowy, breezy dresses, flats that can withstand a little dust, and a warm scarf to wrap yourself up in. Jumpsuits are a great option since it eliminates having to pack both tops and bottoms for evenings. In terms of accessories, leave any really blingy jewelry at home and opt for a more simple, pared down look.

What to Wear On a Safari: Safari Outfit Ideas & Inspo

what to wear on safari

As I attempted to pack for my trip to Kenya a few years ago, I was STRESSED. I read every. single. article. available online, but I never really found one that gave specific enough suggestions for what to wear on safari—which is why, when I got back, I knew I obviously had to create my own guide with PLENTY of cute safari outfit ideas.

This post primarily focuses on what clothes to wear on safari for women, but I’ve also included a few photos of what my husband wore, just in case you need outfit ideas for men as well!

safari outfit ideas

Below, I’ll give you specific examples about what clothes what to pack for a safari in the following categories: – jackets – pants – tops – footwear – accessories – insect repellent wipes – sunscreen – sunglasses – nighttime outfits – carry-on luggage and duffel bags – what to pack in the bag you take with you on your game drives

safari outfit ideas

Also: if you haven’t read my secrets to surviving a long-haul flight and my suggestions for comfy travel outfits , I’d recommend checking it out before your trip!

Consider this the only guide you will ever need to pack for a safari. ENJOY!

Scroll to the bottom for safari outfit inspo based on the looks I wore on my own trip.

WHAT TO WEAR ON SAFARI:

Most people will tell you to avoid navy blue or black clothing on safari, since dark colors attract tsetse flies (an insect native to tropical Africa.)

You’re better off with neutrals, like green, khaki, white, or light blue—especially because it gets hot. I’d recommend cute khaki trousers , lightweight lounge pants , breathable joggers , light sweats , or even leggings (but remember to avoid black.)

Also remember you’ll be sitting in whatever you wear for hours on end, so make sure you’re comfortable in whatever you choose.

One thing I read over and over again was the importance of layering. And it’s true: in the mornings and after sun down, the temperatures get fairly chilly, and you’ll want to be bundled up—but during the day, it gets oppressively hot.

The best advice I can give you is to start with a base layer (like a t-shirt or tank top ), then add a second layer (like a button-up shirt or light sweater), and finally, top it with a jacket or puffer vest + scarf.

I also LOOOOVE jumpsuits and would have totally brought some on my own trip if I had thought of it. They’re just so easy to throw on and they’re super comfortable. Find a few good picks below!

Here are similar options to what I wore, which you can click to shop:

This will depend on the type of safari you’re doing, but in my experience, hard core hiking boots (which I initially thought I needed) would have been totally unnecessary.

For the most part, you’ll be spending your game drives inside the vehicle and doing very little walking, so my advice is to wear whatever you’re most comfortable in.

Boots or high-top sneakers are great because they’ll cover your ankles, but I honestly saw one girl wearing sandals—and she was fine. (I wouldn’t wear sandals because of all the dirt/dust/insects, but you get the point.)

DUFFEL BAGS

Most safaris have strict weight restrictions on baggage because of the size of the plane you take into the desert. (More deets on that in my Safari 101 masterpost !) These duffels all fit way more than you’d expect and will meet the requirements.

WHAT TO WEAR AT NIGHT DURING SAFARI

This was one of the things I was most confused about. Do people dress up for dinner? Is it cold? What aesthetic should I be going for?

The answer: pretty much anything goes. Sanctuary Olonana , where I stayed, is considered on the “fancier” end, but there definitely wasn’t a dress code.

Some nights I wore a casual dress with a scarf, other nights I wore jeans and a blouse, and one night we decided to go straight to dinner from a drive, which meant I showed up in my safari clothes.

I wouldn’t buy anything special to wear at night—just work with what you have.

ACCESSORIES

what to wear on safari outfit

Temperatures tend to fluctuate dramatically on safari, so layers—and scarves—are key.

Plus, if you find yourself engulfed in a dust storm, you’ll be grateful to have something to cover your face. I’d recommend something warm for the morning, and a lighter alternative during the day and at night.

I wore a heavier blanket scarf (similar to the below) over my shoulders in the mornings and late at night, and a lighter silk scarf by Cuyana wrapped around my neck during the day.

Madewell  Bandana Scarf

This bandana scarf is IDEAL for safari — plus it’s under $40 and is a light color.

These deet wipes were a godsent. Super easy to toss into your bag, and unlike a large can of insect repellent, they barely took up any room.

Bonus: they come in a resealable packet. These are the exact ones I bought, and I only got bit once.

I wouldn’t have survived without this genius brush-on sunscreen , which I kept in my bag during game-drives and re-applied constantly.

Because most of your time is spent driving through dust and dirt, the idea of putting liquid sunscreen on felt kind of gross to me. This little brush was the perfection solution.

brush on sunscreen safari packing essentials

I’m a huge fan of Ray Ban aviators, but more recently I bought these $15 dupes on Amazon and I’ve been LIVING in them. If you’re the kind of person who constantly misplaces your sunglasses – I would highly, highly recommend.

MOISTURIZING SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER

After a few days of being in the desert, my hair literally felt like straw. Luckily I’m a PSYCHO and anticipated that the arid climate would require a super hydrating shampoo and conditioner, so I packed the travel-sized version of this super moisturizing Briogeo shampoo and conditioner.

image of safari dress

My husband and I both wore our hats every single day. Having the sun beat down on you for hours can be a killer, plus, you KNOW how I feel about wrinkles. Don’t be a dummy. Bring a hat.

This one from Madewell is PERFECT. Had I seen it before my trip, it’s definitely what I would have bought.

PACKING CUBES

best packing cubes for long trips

Set of 7 packing cube s, $21

Space is often limited on the small charter flights to the Masai Mara and other Kenya safari destinations, which means that every inch counts.

Packing cubes were a game changer for me. They not only keep your belongings neatly organized, but they also compress items to help maximize space. (Another one of my top space-saving travel hacks ? Use contact lens cases to store liquids like foundation and moisturizer. It frees up SO much room in your toiletry bag .)

Calpak and Stoney Clover both make great ones, or you can find them on places like Amazon (the ones I linked here are perfect and reasonably priced .)

WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU ON GAME DRIVES

  • Blanket scarf
  • Hairbrush (the wind really does a number on your hair & you obviously want to look FRESH for pics)
  • Lipbalm/Chapstick
  • External battery & charging cord
  • Bottle of water
  • Powder sunscreen (to reapply during the day)
  • Fanny pack (perfect for storing your must-haves)
  • Jacket (for early in the morning and after the sun went down)
  • Hand sanitizer or wet wipes

What to Wear on Safari

AFRICA TRAVEL

Stylish outfits for an African safari adventure, using versatile basics

There may be affiliate links within this post that provide me with a commission, at no cost to you. More information at: Privacy & Disclosure .

When I booked a dream trip to Africa , the thought of planning what to wear on safari was daunting. It was my first trip to Africa and I’d be flying between safari camps in Botswana on little bush planes. That meant strict luggage limits; I had no choice but to pack light.

In the past, I’ve traveled light by creating capsule wardrobes — picking clothes in colors that mix and match to create many outfits, but fit in a small bag. I decided to use the same approach for my African safari attire to create simple safari style.

What to Wear on an African Safari

Safari Style Capsule Attire with 15 pieces: jacket, shirts, pants, romper, hat, glasses and scarf all in shades of khaki, tan and brown. Also pictured are ankle boots and sandals, a sun hat and sunglasses.

African Safari Outfits - Creating a Capsule Wardrobe

My safari was a 6-day adventure in Botswana and I visited in March, toward the end of the Southern Africa summer, also known as green season. At this time of year, the nights weren’t as cold as during winter, but still chilly. And daytime temps went as high as 100 Fahrenheit! So I had to dress for both hot and chilly temps.

If you’re like me, the 5:30 am wake-up for the morning game drive will feel very early. You’ll want getting dressed to be as simple as possible. So  I chose a palette of neutrals — green, tan, beige and brown. That made it quick and east to get dressed; everything worked with everything else. My only patterned piece was a little scarf.

Deciding what to pack was also dictated by luggage limits — mine was 20 kg. In East Africa the weight limit can be as low as 15 kg; check luggage limits with your safari outfitter. Also, luggage should be a soft-sided bag. More on that below.

A giraffe stands among trees in Makgadikgadi Pans National Park in Botswana.

TIP: Bring a daypack – it allows you to pack away your warm layer when temps rise. I also kept sunscreen, bug spray, camera, binoculars, and a water bottle in my pack.

An African Safari Packing List

A safari packing list will vary depending on the destination and time of year. East Africa is closer to the equator, so it is warmer year-round, while temperatures vary more widely in Southern Africa where their winter brings cold nights.

In Botswana in March mornings were cold and we did have some rain so I was grateful for my layers: a cotton utility jacket, a raincoat, a light puffer jacket and a wool scarf-wrap.

The length of your trip is less of an issue as most safari lodges have laundry facilities. Inquire about laundry access with your travel agent or safari outfitter. I had laundry done once on my safari.

This safari attire packing list  may be more than you need. But it covers everything you may want. You can tailor it to your trip.

  • 2 pants (green and beige)
  • 1 short utility-style dress
  • 1 one-piece shorts romper
  • 1 long-sleeved linen shirt
  • 1 short-sleeved shirt
  • 2 tank tops (beige & white)
  • Cotton Utility Jacket
  • Light puffer coat
  • Swimsuit & Cover-Up
  • Socks & underwear
  • 1 accent scarf
  • 1 light wool scarf wrap
  • 1 wide-brim hat
  • Camera Equipment

A pair of brown ankle boots are pictured, stained with mud and bits of grass. The are set on a wood floor with rattan furniture in the distance.

What Shoes to pack for a Safari

For footwear I took two pairs: a pair of boots and sandals. I wasn’t sure about my decision to go with boots instead of runners but it was the right call. We had beautiful sunny days but also heavy rain and mud. Sandals were ideal for hot afternoons (up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit) and I wore them on game drives a couple of afternoons. Sunglasses, a hat, and a daypack were my other safari essentials.

Is There a Safari Dress Code?

Helpful Guidelines for Safari Style

  • Although game lodges don’t tend to have official dress codes, many lodges prohibit any clothing with a camouflage pattern. Also, avoid blue as it can attract tsetse flies.
  • Neutrals are ideal — they are easy to mix, match, and you’ll blend with the landscape.
  • Bright colors can scare animals away, so leave it to the zebras and giraffes to make the design statement.
  • With temperatures fluctuating dramatically, you will need layers, including warm layers. This is more the case in Southern Africa in winter. I brought a down jacket and I needed it. Don’t think Africa will only be hot.
  • Safari lodges typically have rain ponchos for all guests, but I suggest you bring your own lightweight raincoat. It’s a convenient layer to have.
  • Bring long pants! They are ideal for early morning drives and to protect against bugs. I also wore pants to dinner.
  • Some vehicles have open tops so you will want a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. A chin strap is helpful to keep hats from blowing off.
  • Most safari lodges have a swimming pool, so bring a swimsuit and coverup.
  • There is no need to bring anything fancy for evenings as African safari lodges tend to be casual. That said, it’s nice to change out of what you’ve worn all day.
  • Suggested safari footwear: Boots or closed-toe shoes for protecting your feet, and sandals for when it’s hot.

Susan Heinrich stands with her camera with the sunset beyond while on safari in Botswana's Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. She wears part of her safari wardrobe: rust shorts and a beige linen utility jacket.

African Safari Outfits- Daytime

During my 6-days on safari, I wore pants and at least two layers on top for the morning game drive then changed into shorts in the afternoon when temps jumped into the high 90’s Fahrenheit. Especially if you are lounging in a swimsuit during your downtime, count on the possibility you’ll change a few times during the day.

For this reason, I traveled with packing cubes which I loved. They act like drawers to keep things organized, which is especially helpful if you stay at multiple game lodges, as I did. You won’t have to unpack and pack up everything with each new lodge.

zebras in a beautiful grassland in Africa

What to Wear on Safari in Evenings

Safaris are casual, so bringing fancy items to wear to dinner is unnecessary. Still, I like to change into something a little nicer for the evening. Because it was chilly and I was trying to avoid bug bites, I always wore long pants in the evening, typically pairing those with a long-sleeved shirt and my sweater wrap. I also had a cute linen utility jacket that I wore to dinner. I simply added a necklace to jazz up my outfit.

Everything I brought had to work well with multiple pieces. A long-sleeved cashmere sweater would also be a nice option for the evening, especially if you are on safari in the Southern Africa winter.

Susan Heinrich sits at a lunch outdoors at Leroo la Tau safari lodge, Botswana wearing an African safari outfit, brown linen short, tan pants and brown safari-style boots.

African Safari Wardrobe: Start With What You Have

My number one tip for creating any capsule wardrobe is to try everything on ahead of time. That’s the only way to know what works with what. And start with what you already have. With the pieces I already had in my closet, I bought just a few new items for my safari wardrobe. Below, I include all the key clothing items I brought. If they are no longer available, I’ve listed something similar from a brand I own, even if I don’t have that exact piece.

I try to focus on brands that are striving toward sustainability and I prefer to buy clothes that will last and I’ll enjoy for years to come. Because I travel often, things need to hold up well and easily mix and match in capsule wardrobes. I focus on well-made essentials rather than trendy items. I’d rather spend a little more and purchase less.

About 20 clothing items including pants, shirts, shorts, and other travel items spread out that combine to create a capsule wardrobe of African safari outfits.

Pants to Wear on Safari

I recommend choosing two neutral-colored pants for a safari wardrobe — tan, brown and khaki green are all great choices. I brought three pairs of pants and in hindsight, could have managed with two, especially given I had access to laundry services.

I took quick-dry travel pants from Athleta which I love (pictured above). They are very lightweight and don’t wrinkle — ideal when it was hot, but I wanted my legs covered.  Mine are from a few years ago; the Endless High Rise Pant in green and the Brooklyn Utility Pants in tan are most similar to mine.

You could also go with a cotton utility pant such as the Utility Barrel Pant by Everlane. The cocoa color would be a great safari pant. Or the Refined Utility Pant by Banana Republic.

Safari Shorts

Because it was so hot in the afternoons, I was grateful to have packed shorts. I wore them on an afternoon game drive and lounging around the safari lodge between outings — relaxing on my verandah or taking photos. Mine are several years old. Comfort is crucial on safari, as you sit for long periods in the jeep. I suggest the Trekkie North Bermuda Short ; it’s a great mid-length and lightweight. I love that it has zippered pockets. Available in sizes 0-24.

If you prefer a shorter style look at the Easy Short by Everlane  or the European Linen Shorts by Quince.

Susan Heinrich leans against the side of a small 6-seater airplane while on safari in Botswana. She wears a beige linen shorts romper and is holding a hat.

One-Piece Romper

A one-piece romper seems like the perfect safari style —easy and cool. I found mine in South Africa just before I left for Botswana and I was glad I bought it. It was great for hot weather lightweight and I could keep the waist loosely tied to allow air flow.

My style is a small brand I had never heard of, but here are similar options: Athleta’s Brooklyn Utility Romper, the  Short Jumpsuit in Cotton Twill by Alex Mill, or Anthropologie’s Kit Utility Romper. And for a splurge, and classic Out of Africa vibes, look at Frame’s Utility Short Jumpsuit in Khaki Tan .

You could choose this instead of the shorts if you want to pack one less item.

Susan Heinrich stands in an open grassy landscape in Botswana holding a glass of white wine. She is on safari enjoying the traditional sundowner drink, with the sun setting behind her.

Safari Style Shirtdress

Yes, I could have gotten by without this shirtdress, but it was nice to have. I wore it on two very hot travel days in Africa. And its classic safari style was nice for the photos we took while enjoying our sundowners. (Sundowners are a highlight of any day on safari; a classic refreshment such as a gin and tonic is enjoyed while marveling at the beauty of the landscape, and reflecting on the day’s adventures.)

Mine is from Banana Republic; I’d had it for a while. I am trying to support more diverse brands that prioritize responsible manufacturing, and Banana Republic isn’t there yet. But they do an excellent job of safari style. This similar style, the  Twill Utility Shirtdress , captures the same look that says I take exploring seriously. J.Crew Factory has a nice option in olive green, the Utility Mini Dress.

Susan Heinrich in a safari jeep holding a camera. She's in Botswana in the Magkadikgadi Pans National Park.

Long-sleeved Shirt

A lightweight long-sleeved shirt is a cornerstone of your African safari outfits; either cotton or linen work well.  I wore mine day and night, on its own and layered. I chose a dark brown linen shirt, but a khaki green or tan would also be the perfect safari staple.

This is a classic piece you will wear again and again, not just on safari. You may well already have one in your closet. If you don’t, mine is by the Gap, similar to this Linen Boyfriend Shirt.  For an investment piece, I love the Britt Linen Shirts at J. McLaughlin.

For a budget-friendly option look at the Quince European Linen . I own it in white and it’s great quality. The “washed olive” color would be great for a safari. Everlane’s Relaxed Linen Shirt . is another mid-priced option.

Susan Heinrich sits in a boat on an African safari dressed in green pants, a white shirt and a scarf and sunglasses. She is in the Okavango Delta with water and papyrus plants beyond.

Short-sleeved Shirt

Some people will say to avoid wearing white on safari as it can appear bright and startling to animals. And this is good advice. But I already owned a short-sleeved utility shirt in white, so I decided to bring it rather than buy another one. Mine is a few years old but any comfortable cotton short-sleeved shirt will work well to create your safari outfits. This one is similar and comes in a lovely green: Loft Utility Dolman Shirt.   Quince’s Vintage Wash Tencel Camp Shirt comes in several colors, and is lightweight and wrinkle resistant — great for travel.

A khaki green safari-style utility jacket

Safari Style Utility Jacket

I bought my linen utility jacket fifteen years ago, but it had sat quietly at the back of my closet for the last ten. I rediscovered it w hen I went through everything I had that might be considered safari attire.

That’s why I always recommend looking through your closet, before you buy anything. You may find some gems, which allows you to invest in a few quality pieces, instead of having to spread your budget across an entirely new wardrobe.

I love utility jackets — they can be styled with jeans, trousers, and skirts, and work long after you return home from your safari.

My current favorite is this one from Quince, The Chore Jacket. It’s lightweight and only $60. The colors tobacco or olive would both work really well for safari style.

L.L. Bean has a nice selection of women’s jackets that could work for African safari outfits. In particular, you might consider the BeanFlex Short Utility Jacket .

Another cute option would be a bomber-style jacket.

A camel colored cashmere poncho wrap over a t-shirt. Ideal travel essential or capsule wardrobe item.

Lightweight Wool Scarf/Wrap

A wool wrap is one of my favorite travel essentials. Even if I am going somewhere warm, you never know when you might need a layer on a chilly evening, or in air conditioning. And they are perfect to carry on the plane which is usually, brrrr. Mine is several years old, but this wardrobe staple is available from many brands at various price points.

I love the Mongolian Cashmere Wrap by Quince and it’s well-priced. I own their cashmere crewneck sweater and the quality is great. It comes in eight colors.  J. Crew also has a nice option (and it often goes on sale) the  Cashmere Wool-Blend Poncho.

Susan Heinrich steps off of a boat in the Okavango Delta in Botswana, with the sun rising beyond her. Her safari outfit is a pair of green pants, a green rain jacket and brown safari boots.

Rain Jacket

I’d say a rain jacket is not entirely necessary because safari lodges will have ponchos available for your use, as I mentioned. That said, I was happy that I brought a rain jacket. It was the perfect lightweight layer on an early morning walking safari (pictured above) and was less cumbersome than a poncho.

My raincoat was light enough to keep in my daypack, so I had it if needed. Mine is by Sierra Designs and several years old. This RainOut Sutro Trench by Athleta is similar. I own many Athleta pieces and am a huge fan of this brand!

For a cute bomber style I suggest Athleta’s Jetset Bomber in grey.

Susan Heinrich wears a favorite travel hat while sitting in a safari jeep on an Africa safari in Botswana. She is also wearing sunglasses and a beige linen romper. She has her hand raised to holding the back of her hat.

Wide-Brimmed Hat

I both own and wear many hats 😉 but I did purchase a new hat to wear on safari. I chose the Laguna Drover Hat   from Tommy Bahama. (The brand is Kooringle of Australia.) It was perfect. Our safari jeeps always had a roof that offered some sun protection, but note that this is not always the case.  Because I was using a large DSLR camera, a slightly smaller brim was more practical. Technically this is a men’s hat, but the smaller of the two sizes (M/L) fit perfectly. Tommy Bahama has a great online selection of women’s hats .

Susan Heinrich rides in a safari jeep with green Warby Parker sunglasses on.

If you wear corrective lenses, I recommend investing in prescription sunglasses for your African safari. Not having to put my contact lenses in at 5 am was a dream.  My go-to for prescription glasses is Warby Parker and the style I purchased is The Beale , in the color Rosemary Crystal — a very pretty green.

My prescription sunglasses are single-vision, but you can also get them with progressive lenses. And all their sunglasses can be purchased without a prescription as well.

If you don’t have a Warby Parker near you, the website has virtual try-on technology using your computer camera, or you can order several pairs online to be shipped to you, and decide which you like. I own three pairs of prescription glasses from Warby Parker, two eyeglasses, and now my “safari sunglasses”. I highly recommend them — great quality products and service.

Feet in African safari boots with a bush plane beyond in a muddy landing strip in Africa.

Boots for an African Safari

I almost didn’t bring these boots and they turned out to be the most essential thing I wore in Africa. Keeping my feet protected and dry was crucial. We had rain, and lots of mud. If I had been wearing runners they would have been a mess. My boots are the Betsy by Born, purchased last year. As of now they are sold out but I will watch for a similar style by them.

Meanwhile here are some great options: I love the rich caramel color of the Frye Veronica boot available at Nordstrom. A classic and chic safari style by a heritage brand.

And you can never go wrong with a pair of Blundstones; they have a nice safari style boot with a substantial sole — Blundstone Lace-Up Boots.

A woman from the waist down wearing linen shorts; her feet are pictured in a pair of Nisolo Flatform Sandals. She is at a safari lodge.

My sandals are by Nisolo, they are the Go-To Flatform Sandal in almond and come in several other colors. They were perfect to wear on safari — comfy and lightweight to pack. And I liked that the platform kept my feet a little elevated from the ground. They work equally well with shorts and a sundress. Note, these run small, I sized up half a size.

Nisolo is an environmentally conscious brand and a Certified B Corp. Their artisanal shoemakers in Peru are paid a living wage.

A black soft-sided duffle bag with the words Eagle Creek printed on the side.

Soft-Sided Luggage for Safari

For my safari, I borrowed a soft-sided bag that dates to the 80’s; I can’t even find the brand. But I own another travel bag by Eagle Creek and it’s terrific, so I can recommend them if you need soft-sided luggage. The Eagle Creek No Matter What Duffle would be great for a safari; it’s lightweight and water-resistant. Choose between the 60 and 90-liter capacity, depending on your weight limit and how much you intend to bring. Available in several colors.

And just like that, we are all packed for an African safari. Well, at least we have a better idea what to wear on safari  — from there, packing should be a snap. I hope you have a truly magical time on your African adventure, or embracing safari style at home — almost as fun!  You might enjoy reading about my Botswana Safari Adventure in  Leroo La Tau Safari Lodge .

Thank you SO much for this post, it was exactly what I was looking for! I’m a solo 52yo Aussie living in Canada & heading to Kenya in Jan 2025 (meeting up with a group of strangers for the safari) & so I’m trying to learn as much as I can & prep. So thank! Especially for giving links too, makes life so much easier.

Now I will also read some of your other content.

Hi there! Thanks so much for reading. Have an incredible trip to Kenya!

Love your safari style! I’m going on safari in Kenya/Tanzania in late June/July 2024 and this was extremely helpful. The visuals and recommendations are great.

Thanks Dani. Have an incredble trip to East Africa!!

I love your safari style! Thank you for all of the helpful tips! I am going on two day trip safari’s in Kenya. I wanted to ask if you have a recommendation of a crossbody bag to bring on my day trips. I’m not sure how much stuff I will need to bring for the day. Also which jacket would I bring for the day. I see you packed a few different ones for your trip.

Hi Krystal. How exciting! Kenya will be incredible. I used a small backpack as my day bag as I wanted it to hold a coat, hat, suscreen and jacket. As for what coat it depended on time of day. Mornings were cold so I brought my down-filled jacket. It was a lightweight one that packed up in a small bag, but was quite warm. In the afternoon I brought my raincoat in my bag (just in case as it was rainy season) and I usually wore my light cotton utility jacket with a tee underneath in case I got hot. With most safaris, you go back to the lodge midday to relax, so you can change your clothes and your jacket. For example, I always wore long pants in the morning but wore shorts in the warmer afternoon. Hope that helps ! Have a marvelous trip!

Hi Susan. I stumbled upon you and so glad I did! Thank you for all the info and detail and putting in the links for some of the items, really helps understand what you are recommending. Going in August, Kenya/Tanzania, so will be hotter than your trip. Trying to decide if Bludstones still needed (?) or if a hiking shoe/sneaker type could work since won’t be too muddy. And, you are brave in dresses and shorts! I am already anticipating all the bug bites coming my way!

Hi Jackie. Yes, bug spray is necessary although I didn’t find it too bad. I would definitely bring shorts to change in to between game drives. Based on what you are saying I think a sturdy sneaker with a good sole or hiking shoes will be fine. Have an incredible trip to East Africa!

Hello, Thank you for your great post. You say that luggage should be soft sided, but never say why; is this a requirement of airlines, or safari providers, or just more practical? Thank you, Suzanna.

Hi Suzanna. Yes, the safari operators prefer it because it usually gets placed directly inside the little planes, rather than a luggage hold, so it can more easily fit with the other luggage when it’s soft-sided.

The Ultimate Guide on How to Look Chic While on an African Safari

The Ultimate Guide on How to Look Chic While on an African Safari

Guest Post by Wendy Wangui

It is no secret that technology, smartphones and social media have changed the way we travel, dress and pretty much how we do almost everything. The norm has become ‘if it is not caught on camera then it did not happen.’ This also comes with the added pressure of striking a balance between looking our best and being comfortable while traveling. Luckily social media offers plenty of opportunities to inspire our inner chic wanderlust.

Safaris are not just trips we go on to see animals and be one with nature, they are also an opportunity to get creative with your style. Like planning around the weather, or appropriate outfits to fit the cultural context, you have to plan your safari outfits too.

I cannot overemphasize dressing for the occasion and when it comes to safari travel; failing to dress accordingly can actually affect your trip (Quote me Hahaha). Most safari travel destinations offer luxury in spades, so you do need a few good outfits to match that ambiance. Don’t waste any space in your luggage with outfits you do not love.

There is no better time to bring out earthy colourways, prints, khaki, cargo and a great hat.

If you are going on a safari and are in complete panic mode about what to wear, do not be. Here are a few easily replicable looks I loved to help you dress for the wild…

1. Silk Print Set

There is no rule against trying to blend in with the animals. Animal print fabric is quite bold and is sure to make you stand out. The silky soft material is great for those long scenic game drives. A comfortable fit without compromising your style. If you are extra like me, pair it with some minimal gold Jewellery and you are set to make a statement.

2. Cargo Set

If you see someone wearing cargo you know they mean business. Nothing screams safari chic than a well-fitting cargo ensemble. Cargo pants are a comfortable and exciting choice to create an unsurpassed outfit. There is a reason why Karen Blixen is wearing cargo all through the movie “Out of Africa.” Pairing cargos with accessories in the same colour definitely pulls the entire look together. A pair of boots whether ankle boots or even Doc Martens are the best way to go.

Safari style jumpsuit

3. The White Shirt

For a long time, we have been finding ways to make the white shirt more than just an item to wear to the office. A safari is yet another way to unleash your white shirt, trust me there is no better way to brave the heat in the savanna. Take it a notch higher and style the shirt with a printed skirt. Truth be told, you spend most of your time sitting in the car and being driven around so you might as well look pretty while you are at it.

4. The Tracksuit

Of course, like in all other travel, comfort is key. Track suits seem to have stood the test of time in fashion by constantly making a comeback with tons of colours and materials to choose from. Morning game drives tend to start quite early, so it is obviously chilly; the track suit is your one stop shop for comfort and warmth during those chilly mornings. Put on a pair of boots and take this outfit from basic to chic. It is both comfy and fashionable.

5. Dress It Up

There is absolutely no reason to leave your dresses at home. Not only do you get to laze around the camp or glamp ( glamorous camping) all day when you are not out on drives or walks. So do bring sleeveless dresses and accessories like belts  to elevate the look and get more wear out of a single dress. Don’t be afraid to bring some wedges to wear to the cosy dinners.

6. The Jumpsuit

It would be criminal of me not to highlight the timeless khaki Jumpsuit. This piece is definitely the poster child for Safari style. One piece and you look like you have it all together. A brown or Jungle green are the best options to opt for. Having it a little cinched at the waist is sure to highlight anyone’s curves. Throw on a pair of Knee-High boots to elevate the look, effortlessly taking it from the streets to the wild.

  • Leather! Yes you read that right

Who said leather can not be taken to the wild? Like seriously who? Because I have never heard of that. Plain leather is great, but a snake print skirt is to die for. Paring it with subtle brown tones will have you looking like a fashion faithful. The coat and the hat add a touch of elegance to this bold look. Be sure to carry your leather pieces with you on your next safari, the pairing possibilities are endless.

safari themed leather skirt

Hope you enjoyed these looks as much as I did. Getting to travel and looking good while doing it is definitely one thing everyone should experience. There is no time to be bored in a world as beautiful as this and especially in a boring outfit. Getting great picture of the scenery and some of yourself makes it all worthwhile. So, go forth and slay your next Safari.

8. The shirt dress

Shirt dresses are always an unsurpassed fit. This particular one comes down almost like a maxi dress (see photo below). A great way to make it pop in the wild is by pairing it with a chunky belt and boots. Keep it neutral to remain bold but still sophisticated.

These are beautiful, I haven’t been on a safari yet but I have given thought to what to wear to be comfortable but also cute in pictures. My favorite look is number 3, I feel like that top can be pulled off by anyone and paired with several other looks.   • Practical and comfortable outfits;
  • Padded pockets and straps;
  • Breathable materials;
  • Natural color palette;
  • Easy carelessness.

Where did the safari style come from?

The style of safari, in the usual sense, that is, as clothing for travel, appeared in the 1930's, but its inclinations date back to an even earlier 1900. At that time, the British military was stationed in South Africa, where the climate did not allow the use of a standard form - something light and air-permeable, but functional and practical, was required.

Safari appearance

So the clothes were combined with the term "safari". The emergence of the safari style in women's fashion was facilitated by Yves Saint Laurent , who in the 60's popularized this stylistic direction, releasing a collection of clothes for the journey of the elite to tropical countries.

"Easy" is the key word here, so don't overdo it. A released hem of the top, unbuttoned upper buttons of the jacket or a hastily tied shirt will do. These techniques add to the "life" way of life.

What is the difference between a safari and a military

Both safari and military style in women's fashion are a reference to military clothing, so it will not be superfluous to understand the difference between these two directions. The first thing that every fashionista should know is that safari does not accept camouflage.

Basic Safari Style Clothes for Women

The choice of things in the style of safari today is huge - 1-2 items are found in almost any store - from luxury to mass market. Next, we'll show you the basic things that are specific to the style, so you know what to look for on the shelves of boutiques.

  • Jacket-shirt with patch pockets and belt . This is a real must have safari wardrobe. A little brutal, as if a man's shirt makes the image colorful, especially in contrast with the belt that emphasizes the waist;

Jacket shirt

  • Safari dress . It is a shirt dress or a straight-cut model with a belt or belt and patch pockets. Also allowed are patches in the form of epaulettes, expressive buttons, for example, gold. The length is usually up to the knee or slightly higher, but it is permissible for slender girls to pick up a mini, decorated as an elongated jacket;

Safari dress

  • Shorts. Bermuda shorts made of cotton to the middle of the thigh in olive, brown or beige color will fit perfectly into the summer wardrobe. For variety, choose a more relaxed model or shorter, but within the same palette;

Safari style shorts

  • Pants. Free, pleasant to the body, within the natural color palette. The presence of patch pockets is welcomed, although more classic models are also appropriate for the city bow;

Safari style trousers

  • Overalls. A model with both shorts and trousers will do. There are no special requirements for the overalls , the main thing is that the outfit falls into the desired color scheme, has a straight cut and is comfortable;

Safari style jumpsuit

  • Light dress with animalistic print . Yes, it's not the most practical option for Africa, but we're not going there, are we? Complement the dress with a safari-style jacket;

Dress with print

  • Shirts of different, non-standard cut . Shortened, asymmetrical models that differ from the standard traveler's shirt will do;

The Ultimate Africa Safari Packing List to Help You Look Stylish & Feel Amazing

You might not be planning to head to Africa anytime soon, but I promise there is something for everyone in this post! I’m sharing a packing list that can be used to help pack for many types of trips and some chic and casual spring and summer outfit ideas. You still here? Okay, awesome!

stylish outfits for African safari, African safari packing list

Bucket List Trip to Africa

Africa has been on my personal bucket list for years. Anyone remember my old video on YouTube where I talk about turning 40 and all the things I still want to do (8 years ago)? I mentioned visiting Africa in that video. Anyway, years later, we planned THE trip… for April 2020. Needless to say, that timeline didn’t work out.  So after years of dreaming, planning, cancellations, etc. we finally made it! This is a once-in-a-lifetime trip that I’m so excited to share with you all!

Find more details about my trip including info about each of our stops, the animals, and much more in this video .

what to pack for your Africa safari, stylish clothing ideas for women

African Safari Packing List

When we first started planning the trip, I had this clear vision of what I wanted to look like. My inspiration was Meryl Streep’s character in Out Of Africa or  Julia Schlaepfer’s character in the show, 1923 . Have you seen either of those??

Then… I found out I could only bring one 40-lb. duffel bag because of the plane’s weight restrictions. This was maybe one of my greatest packing challenges yet! But I wasn’t ready to give up on my chic African safari outfits…and from what you’ll see from the outfits below, I still got some stylish looks to fit in that duffel! Depending on your specific trip, you might want to pack differently, but if you’re headed to Africa during the dry season, the packing list above will be super helpful.

A few tips and notes…

  • Most camps do laundry for you daily (for free) so you only need to pack minimal socks and undies.
  • To minimize, you could bring only one pair of shorts and only one jacket. I mostly wore one jacket (you’ll see below).
  • I packed two long dresses and wish I had packed one short and one long instead. Which is why you’ll see that reflected in the list above, but you’ll see two maxis below.
  • To make packing easier, stick to a color story. You’ll see below that I went with greens, tans, and whites. That is by design as it’s suggested you wear earth tones on safari.
  • This list is for anyone traveling during dry season and into fall.
  • If you look up other packing lists, you’ll see lots of specific gear to pack vs. more fashion-focused clothing. I don’t think you need serious outdoorsy gear for this trip.
  • Make sure that all toiletries, skincare, and makeup are travel sized to cut down on the amount of space you use in your bag.
Keep scrolling to see how I wore each of the pieces I have in the list above, some stylish safari outfits, and more details on our trip.

White Top & Green Shorts Chic Africa Outfits

Outfit #1) White Top & Green Shorts

This first outfit is one I’d wear for spring/summer even at home…no Africa trip necessary! I’m wearing a pretty white eyelet top by Velvet. It’s 100% cotton so it keeps you cool, but you get that arm coverage with the long sleeves. I’ve styled this top with denim shorts and jeans but for this look, I’m wearing a pair of super chic green shorts by DL1961. These shorts have a high waist (12.25”), pleating details on the front, a wider A-line leg style (a must for flattering shorts!), and cool cargo-style details. The cargo trend is very big right now so all of the pieces in this post will be great for your spring/summer wardrobe. On my feet, I’m wearing some Golden Goose sneakers, but you can go with a different, more affordable option. Just make sure it’s a chic and stylish pair of sneakers that are comfortable! I kept the jewelry minimal with a pair of Julie Vos hoops.

If you’re looking for tips on how to find the perfect shorts over 40 and confidently wear them, check out this post .

Green pants Africa outfits

Outfit #2) Green Pants, Tan Tee & Veronica Beard Cargo Jacket

Next up, I’m wearing a pair of green Paige pants that you’re going to see A LOT more of in this post. They’re a jogger style with cargo pockets in this gorgeous military green color. They are a 26” inseam, which is perfect for me to wear with boots, sandals, or sneakers. These pants are one of those pieces you can have in your closet to dress up or down and they look SO chic. In this look, I styled them with a tan Nation LTD tee. It has subtle puffed short sleeves, a flattering V-neckline, and button front details. For warmth, I recommend taking a vest like the one I’m wearing above by Patagonia.

Cargo Jacket

Over the vest, I’m wearing a Veronica Beard cargo jacket that you’ll be seeing throughout the rest of this post. This jacket and the Paige pants were my most-worn pieces from this trip. And the jacket has remained a heavy hitter since we returned home. It’s such a gorgeous, special piece with cargo details and a zip-off bottom so you can wear it long or cropped. It’s like you’re getting two jackets for the price of one! Of note, you go on safari early in the morning and during the evening. It gets pretty chilly so you definitely want to wear layers as I did above.

Accessories

To complete the look, I’m wearing a few accessories you’ll be seeing more of in this post…because again, I was only allowed that one duffel bag! I’m wearing my go-to Rag & Bone hat I’ve owned for years. Trust me, it’s worth the investment. Around my neck is a gorgeous neutral, animal-prin scarf from Banana Republic that’s so gorgeous and versatile. I styled it a bunch of ways on the trip. I added a western-inspired belt by ba&sh but you could go with whatever brown belt you already own. On my feet, I’m wearing some Sam Edelman combat boots…comfort was key during this trip and these did the trick! Plus, they’re such a good, neutral pair of boots, I know I’ll wear them again. To finish off the look, I’m wearing some Julie Vos jewelry and my Celine sunglasses.

green simkahi romper | Chic Africa Outfits

Outfit #3) Green Romper

Next up, I’m wearing a chic green utility-style romper by Simkahi. I love the cinched waist, oversized lapels, and capped sleeves. It’s that pretty olive green color I tried to tie into all of my outfits with the pants, hat, and a tee you’ll see in some of the looks below. (Sizing note: this runs short so if you have a long torso or are quite tall, I would skip it.) I kept the rest of the look simple and wore a pair of Madewell slide-on sandals that are really comfortable and a great shoe to have in your closet this summer. I only brought three pairs of shoes on this trip…these sandals, the boots from the last look, and the sneakers from the first look. The belt back I’m carrying is from Banana Republic and was perfect for carrying the essentials and being hands-free. I completed the look with a Julie Vos bracelet, a pair of hoops, a subtle Monica Vinader necklace, and come sunglasses.

For tips on how to rock your romper over 40, check out this post .

green safari outfit

Outfit #4) Tan Tee, Green Pants & Green Utility Jacket

In this look, I’m wearing the same green Paige pants with a tan ATM tee. I love ATM tees because they’re SO high-quality that you’ll definitely wear them for more than one season. Over the tee, I have on a green utility jacket by Good American. It’s super lightweight, has an oversized fit. I could have left the jacket at home and only brought one jacket, though. If I had a do-over, I would have only packed the Veronica Beard cargo jacket and saved the space for another pair of pants or jeans.

Africa safari outfits | Chic Africa Outfits

Outfit #5) Rails Button-Down & Green Shorts

Is it any surprise that I packed my Rails white button-down shirt? I take it on every single trip I go on no matter what the destination because it’s THAT versatile. If you don’t already have a high-quality casual button-down for summer, this is what you’ve been looking for! I wear it with everything from shorts and jeans to skirts and swimsuits. In this look, I’m wearing it with the same green DL1961 shorts from Look #1, the Madewell sandals, my belt bag, and some gold jewelry.

Outfit #6) Vix Swimsuit with Rails Button-Down Shirt

I mentioned I wear the Rails button-down with swimsuits and this is what I mean…it makes the perfect coverup! The swimsuit I’m wearing is a sexy, strappy bikini by Vix. Vix is one of my go-to brands for chic and sexy swimsuits and I love the waxed rope and cutout details on this bikini. I wore this when I took Elizabeth to the pool one day.

If you’re looking for more swimsuits and the best brands for women over 40, make sure you check out this post next.

Outfit #7) Green Tee, Pants & Cargo Jacket

Yep, these are the same green Paige pants! This time, I’m wearing them with a green ATM tee that’s the same style as the tan one, just in a different color. I love the monochrome look. But for a little added warmth and style, I threw on the tan Veronica beard jacket. I completed the look with the Rag & Bone hat, Banana Republic scarf, ba&sh belt, Sam Edelman boots, and some sunnies. See how important the layers are? I was able to take off the jacket to get cooler.

Outfit #8) Green Tee & Cargo Shorts

In this outfit, I’m wearing the same green tee and Veronica Beard cargo jacket… but this time, I’m wearing matching Veronica Beard cargo shorts! It’s hard to see the shorts in this picture but they’re good . I love the look of the shorts and jacket combined and it’s really easy to style casually with a tee. The shorts have the same chic cargo details as the jacket, a flattering A-line silhouette, cool contrasting stitching, a high waist, super lightweight material, and they’re comfortable!

what to wear on safari

Outfit #9) White Short-Sleeve Tee & Green Pants

Did I mention I love those ATM tees? 😉 This white v-neck is also by ATM and is my most-worn tee. I know it’s a little pricey for a T-shirt but it lasts more than one season, doesn’t yellow around the armpits, and washes and wears really well. I styled it with the same green pants, tan cargo jacket, and accessories.

Africa family trip

Outfit #10) White Long-Sleeve Tee & Green Pants

If you liked the last look but want a little coverage, this white Nation LTD tee is one I’ve owned for years and is great for covering my chest and arms! I love the big billowy sleeves, smocked cuffs, and that it’s 100% cotton, so I stay cool. I could have styled this tee with any of the other bottoms I packed but I stuck with ol’ faithful…the green Paige pants. 😉

Looking for more chic tops & tees that cover your arms? Check out this post !

cargo jacket safari outfit

Outfit #11) White Button-Down Shirt & Green Joggers

In case you were getting tired of the Paige jogger pants…here’s a different pair of joggers! These are by James Perse and I’ve owned them for about two years. They’re SO comfortable, have an elastic waistband, are 100% cotton, and are the perfect length for me (I’m 5’4”). I styled them with my Rails button-shirt, tan cargo jacket, and combat boots. In hindsight, I wish I had scrapped these joggers and opted for a pair of jeans instead. But, the beautiful thing about this post…you don’t have to make the same mistakes I did! Remember only one jacket, and one pair of joggers or pants and one pair of jeans.

Chic Africa Outfits

Outfit #12) White Top & Green Joggers

Next, I styled the same James Perse joggers with the white eyelet top from Look #1. I wore this while we were exploring Cape Town and I was not prepared for how cold it was there. I threw on my Patagonia vest, Veronica Beard jacket, and scarf for added warmth.

brown indah cutout dress

Outfit #13) Brown Cutout Dress

While we were in Cape Town, I wanted to feel a little more elevated instead of wearing my safari clothes so I went with this beautiful brown Indah dress. It has a v-neckline and cutouts at the waist that are very flattering, a long dramatic maxi length, and billowy sleeves. For a photoshoot at our lodge, I styled it alone with some gold jewelry. But in Cape Town, I wore my Veronica Beard jacket and zipped off the bottom to get that cropped length. I added my scarf for warmth, belt bag for convenience, and combat boots for comfort.

Want to know my 3 secrets to look amazing in cutouts over 40? Check out this post !

pink simkahi cutout maxi dress

Outfit #14) Pink Cutout Dress

I mentioned in my tips above that I wish I had packed one long dress and one short dress. I wore this beautiful pink Simkhai cutout dress to shoot photos in but didn’t get a chance to wear it for anything else, which is why I’d recommend some sort of short cotton dress instead. BUT…I do love the dress and think it’s a great special occasion piece if you have an event or wedding coming up. You can throw on a shawl, jacket, or blazer for added coverage too. I styled it with most of the jewelry I packed for the trip to really add some oomph to the look.

Skincare & Makeup for Africa trip

Skincare & Makeup I Packed

Below I linked all of the skincare and makeup I packed for this trip. My biggest tip is to make sure you have travel sizes for everything. You could buy travel-size containers and transfer all of your product to them, but it’s much easier to buy the travel sizes if they’re available!

More About Our Trip

Every trip to Africa can be different depending on what you want to do, when you go, where you want to go, and what you want to see. This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime trips so it’s important to do your research or even hire a travel agent to help you plan your perfect trip to Africa!

Here is a quick rundown of our trip for anyone who’s interested…

  • We flew into Johannesburg and stayed at our airport hotel.
  • Then we flew to Kasane and Chobe National Park in Botswana and stayed at The Sanctuary. They had 2-bedroom lodges perfect for our family and it was the closest to the park. We loved our guide, Chika!
  • Then we flew from Kasane to Nxabera in Okavango Delta and landed on a dirt landing strip and our safari guides arrived early to ensure no animals were on the runway.
  • We stayed at andBeyond , which ended up being our favorite place we stayed. They sang on our arrival and departure which was so sweet. The tents were connected by a passageway which made me feel comfortable. You don’t want your kids to be alone without easy access to you in these camps. And we loved our guides Richard and KB!
  • Then we flew to Kasane and drove to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. We did a canopy tour, zip lining, a tour of the falls, and an elephant excursion where you could touch and feed wild elephants. We stayed at The Elephant Camp , which was very close to the fall and the activities we did.
  • Then we flew to Cape Town. There we swam with sharks, went whale watching, had some fun dinners, and did a Table Mountain visit. We flew home from Cape Town.

Lion adventure in Africa

Safari Camera Equipment

I also got quite a few questions about the camera I brought including what lens I used. If you are interested in shooting with a huge zoom lens, I would HIGHLY recommend renting the lens. I didn’t even think of that before I went and it would have saved a lot of money.  I bought this Canon lens that was quite pricey but it didn’t have nearly enough zoom – think paparazzi-like lens. This one would be amazing (and it’s $20,000!) Rent one!! OR…just get a really awesome point-and-shoot with incredible zoom. Honestly, that’s what my husband had and his pictures came out beautifully.

What month did you travel to Africa?

We were there in April, during their dry season. Hope this one was helpful for you, Lynn! ~Erin xo

Hi Eri! What an epic experience! Your family was so fortunate to make this memory together, good for you for having the perseverance and drive to see it through. I was wondering about kids clothes, specifically. I have two daughters 10 and 13, and would love to do a trip like this with our family of 4; what packing list would you recommend for kids that age? I gather it would be similar to adults but maybe less variety of one type of clothing? Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for sharing this incredible experience and for being such a key resource for anyone wishing to have a similar adventure! Best, Olga

Thanks for reading and following along for this journey, Olga! It was truly incredible… Very similar for the kids, just minus skincare/makeup, tech gear, and then you can share any of the toiletries/first aid items that you need to. If you haven’t seen it yet, I just shared a video with more details on this epic trip right here: https://youtu.be/o21Q0HfoF-w I hope you get to take your family on a trip like this too, and hope my stories and tips help with your planning! ~Erin xo

  • Pingback: How To Style Rompers... Yes, You CAN Wear a Romper Over 40!

Hi Erin, The timing of this post is perfect for planning my trip to Namibia and Southern Africa in 6 weeks time.looks like you all had a fabulous trip and yes Cape Town can be very windy and cold. We have 10 days on Safari or in the bush in Namibia (Safari clothes) and 4 days in South Africa. Remaining 7 days are is in cities or travelling to and from JNB/Windhoek/Madikwe. I have a couple of questions for you. 1. Noticed the kids wore some light tan pants , same as the guides. How did that colour go re laundering? Was there any red dirt marks that wouldn’t come out? I have cargo joggers that colour…. 2. How chilly did it get (early morning/evening) in Botswana and how warm during the middle of the day, please? I’m trying to gauge if extra layers (light merino mid layers, cami undershirt) needed for evening and night drives vs middle of day clothes. Namibia is tropical/subtropical but I know inland always has a large temperature variance. Thank you for sharing your trip. Bel (Brisbane, Australia)

Perfect timing! Thanks for reading, Belinda. We didn’t have issues with stains personally, and they recommended these colors for safari. It was pretty warm during the day, but surprisingly chilly in the mornings and evenings. The name of the game is layers! Make sure you have a jacket and the layers that you described sound like a great plan. I’ll be sharing more on all of the details of our trip in this coming Thursday’s YouTube video! ~Erin xo

Oh my gosh, Erin, I came upon this post at just the right time while searching for African safari fashion inspiration. I hit the jackpot here! Thank you! I’m 46, I feel like 26, and I like to think I look 36 (but that may just be a dream). Like you we have been planning our trip (to Tanzania and Zanzibar) for years and we’re finally heading there in July 2023. I’m insisting upon making every outfit count (cute and practical) but unfortunately we’re limited not to 40lbs but to only 33lbs per person, including any carry-ons, cameras, bags, etc. Fortunately, because my husband is like most other guys, he’ll only be needing about half of his weight allocation…I’ll make sure of that. :). Without having seen your packing list, it’s uncanny how much our lists already overlap…down to the Paige joggers, Golden Goose sneakers, R&B fedora hat, BR scarf, romper, green utility jacket, and more. I absolutely adore your Veronica Beard Cargo Jacket, but I’m guessing that will be a casualty of the weight restriction…but maybe not. Fingers crossed. I had also hoped to pack a long-sleeved utility jumpsuit, cargo leggings, linen safari dresses, and some cute lugged-soled canvas sneakers (in addition to my GG sneakers, and Frye combat boots…which I had already purchased before seeing your really cute Sam Edelman boots…. which leads me to my two questions. Did you find yourself wearing long-sleeves and long pants more often than shorts and short-sleeves (to ward off the sun and bugs)? And if you had to cut a few more pieces from your list, what could you have lived without? I’m finding the hardest part so far is finding the perfect leather bag to carry with me wherever I go. Thanks so much! You are so beautiful and inspiring. Lauren (Portland, OR)

Perfect timing, Lauren! I’m sharing even more details about this trip in next week’s YouTube video… stay tuned for that! But could have cut out the dress that I only got to wear for taking pictures, and honestly didn’t feel I needed my professional camera. Chris’s small point and shoot camera did a really great job capturing the images. The VB cargo jacket is SUPER lightweight, which made it all the better for this trip! I did wear long sleeves/pants more than expected because it was cooler than I had anticipated. Wear your heaviest shoes/jacket on the plane to save on bag space/weight too! Hope this is helpful as you continue to prepare for your own amazing trip. ~Erin xo

Hi Erin, your African photos and packing post inspired me to finally make the call for planning our family trip to Africa next summer 2024! I am also looking at Elephant Camp – did you like it? And how long did you spend in Cape Town? I love your style and tips and have been following you since before Covid first on You Tube then Instagram. Your Africa looks are wonderful – I am so inspired :)!!

How amazing, Annette!! You will absolutely love it… It’s surreal. We did really enjoy the Elephant Camp, though our favorite place that we stayed was andBeyond. Only had a few days in Cape Town, and would have loved to have more time there! Will share more details in a video soon! ~Erin xo

What a wonderful trip did you plan it yourself or did you have an agent help you to plan? Your outfits were great. You did a great job and you have some wonderful pictures. What type of camera did you use?

Thanks for reading, Cheryl! We had a travel agent help plan the trip to ensure it was all coordinated just right. I used my professional camera (same one that I do for most of my style pictures, but with a longer range lens) plus Chris actually got a ton of great pictures with his tiny point and shoot camera! We really would have been fine just packing his, surprisingly enough. ~Erin xo

Appreciate the detail in this post, and the lovely photos. Your well-coordinated accessories take these looks over the top! I want EVERYTHING! Your family adventures are truly amazing, and I look forward to hearing more about Africa. Inspiring!

Thanks so much for reading, Rachel! SO glad you enjoyed following along on our journey. It was truly an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime trip. ~Erin xo

dear Erin You always make me feel better with your lovely videos ! I was humiliated at the grocery store for trying to buy 2 packs of paper towels There was no sign and I could not know that I was walking into such an unpleasant situation Thus the new normal has slapped me in my face and it still hurts ! Oh well at least I am still well and counting my many blessings ! You are one of them ! Thank you!

I’m so sorry, Theresa.

Why a gown featuring Jesus Christ’s face sparked controversy at Cannes Film Festival

image of safari dress

By Kelsey Dallas

Actress Massiel Taveras wore a unique, faith-themed dress to this year’s Cannes Film Festival and then ran into trouble when she tried to display it on the red carpet.

One of the film festival’s ushers hurried Taveras inside the theater when she stopped to show off her long train, which featured an image of Jesus Christ wearing the crown of thorns .

The problem almost certainly wasn’t the dress’s design. Another celebrity, Kelly Rowland, was rushed along by ushers earlier in the week, after apparently spending too much time waving to fans, as People magazine reported at the time.

“Video captured of that incident showed the security guard holding an arm out to keep Rowland moving, while the star could be seen heatedly speaking to her and pointing a finger to her at one point,” People reported.

Like Rowland, Taveras briefly argued with the usher before continuing to move inside.

In a video of the incident shared on social media, “Taveras is visibly upset at the usher for blocking her and not allowing her to pose properly. ... Taveras (pushed) the security guard away from her and proceeded to walk ahead,” Deadline reported.

Once inside, Taveras, a Dominican actress and TV host who previously served as Miss Dominican Republic 2007, was able to show off her full train, including the picture of Jesus, and pose for photos, the article said.

The dress was designed by Giannina Azar and hand-painted by Yan Páez, per Deadline.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by M A S S I E L T A V E R A S (@masieltaveras)

Taveras later shared images of the dress on Instagram.

“Jesus Christ is in Cannes,” she wrote in the caption.

Teresa Giudice’s daughter Milania is spitting image of ‘RHONJ’ star in glam prom pics

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Like mother, like dorter.

Teresa Giudice’s daughter Milania Giudice stunned in a shimmering gown while attending to her senior prom on Thursday — with hair that rivals the reality star’s infamous wedding ‘do .

The “Real Housewives of New Jersey” star shared dozens of photos and videos of her second youngest daughter posing for pictures before heading off to the big dance.

Milania Giudice posing at prom

Milania, 18, made a statement in a Ladivine silver off-the-shoulder beaded dress ($489) with rows of silver jewels and crystals embroidered to different areas of the dress.

The gown featured a boned corset style top with lines of sparkly beads running down her torso and rhinestone fringes falling off the sleeves of her shoulders.

Milania also showed off her silver open-toed platform heels with a slit running up her left thigh. The dress flowed past her heels and continued to sparkle in the hundreds of silver beaded rhinestones.

The future University of Tampa student accessorized her look with flowing silver crystal earrings, silver bracelets and statement silver rings.

Milania had her hair done by Lucia Stephanina Casazza –– who also styled Teresa’s larger-than-life wedding hairdo –– and she curled Milania’s long dark brown hair into glam Hollywood waves that went down to her waist and teased the top high.

Milania’s three other sisters –– Gia, Gabriella and Audriana –– were also present and taking photos of Milania and her friends in Teresa’s backyard on Thursday.

Teresa, 52, went all out for the pre-prom soirée and had a massive balloon display that read “PROM” placed in her backyard in front of the pool.

“Hi Milania! You look so beautiful!” Teresa said in one of the many videos shared to her Instagram Story.

The “Turning the Tables” author posted videos of Milania talking with her friends, posing with her best friend, placing a boutonniere on her prom date’s black suit and taking group photos with all her friends and their dates.

“Milania, you look stunning! Oh my God, you look so beautiful,” Teresa said in one of the Stories.

Teresa also shared a video of her husband Louie Ruelas’ son Louie Ruelas Jr. posing for prom photos with one of Milania’s friends.

The mom of four ended her posts of Milania by sharing a video of her walking away and telling her, “Milania, you look gorgeous! Have the best time ever and make sure you come home on time. We’re leaving for paris, love you!”

Teresa also gushed about her older daughters, Gia and Gabriella, before they headed to their proms in 2017 and 2021, respectively.

Milania attended the high school dance less than two weeks after getting into a car crash in her new Mercedes-Benz convertible.

The high school senior had to have her car towed away after she claimed another car ran a stop sign and hit her in an intersection in Boonton, N.J., on May 17, according to TMZ.

Thankfully for Milania, the police placed blame on the other driver and Milana was not injured in the accident.

Jennifer Lopez Balances Her Near-See-Through Schiaparelli Dress With a Casual Top Knot at the 2024 Met Gala

We can always count on Jennifer Lopez to do a red carpet right—and at this year’s Met Gala we were not disappointed. As one of the co-hosts , Lopez understood the assignment (and more) when she wowed everyone in a near-see-through gown adorned with stone embellishments, showing off her immaculate curvy figure.

Though the dress, which is Schiaparelli couture, may be the focal point of Lopez’s look, her neutral makeup and hair offer a nice balance to ground it. The inspo: a butterfly. “The inspiration for this look was a butterfly transforming into something beautiful,” celebrity hairstylist Lorenzo Martin tells Vogue exclusively. “Just like a butterfly, we wanted the hair to be angelic, fresh, and beautiful.”

Martin goes on to say that they wanted to go for an effortless and angelic look to play well into the theme and decided to keep everything soft. He used Shark FlexStyle® Sparkle Air Styling & Drying System in Black Diamond to give Lopez's hair texture and the Tresemme Exta Hold Hair Spray to lock the look in place. The Tangle Teezer Ultimate Styler , he says, helped create those “angelic peices” around the face.

For makeup, Lopez then opts for neutrals, with a mix of browns, pinks, and caramel eyeshadow shades along the eyelids with subtle shimmer to match the sparkle of that incredible dress. Bronzer contours her cheekbones and gives her an ethereal glowing complexion. To finish her makeup look, she opts for a neutral glossy lip—a classic for the singer (and something that just works for any and all occasions) for added shine. Lopez proves that less is more when it comes to makeup and hair, especially when one wears Schiaparelli.

Calling it now: this is our Roman Empire. We’ll be thinking of this look for days.
