The 55 Best Gifts for Travel Lovers in 2024
Peruse these practical and thoughtful gift ideas for every traveler on your list.
Travel + Leisure / Kristin Kempa
Shopping for your travel-loving friends and family can be tricky — after all, you’ll want to ensure you’re picking up something practical, but you also don’t want to gift them something they already have. It’s also worth considering that frequent travelers, especially digital nomads, tend to live a more minimalist life. This means practical gear will reign supreme over more frivolous items.
You’ll also want to take into account the kind of travel your favorite globetrotters or influencers are into. City explorers or luxury-leaning travelers, for example, probably won’t want the same gear as someone who spends their PTO hiking and trekking through the wilderness.
The following options were hand-picked by our team to suit every type of traveler and vacationer on your list. We’ve extensively researched (or personally tested) all of the following gifts to ensure your purchase will make a thoughtful and genuinely practical addition to your loved one’s travels. Here are the best gifts travelers will love — for all budgets and needs.
Paravel Passport Case
If your favorite travelers don’t already have a high-quality passport cover, you might want to consider the Paravel Cabana Passport Case. The elegant leather case can even be personalized with a hand-painted monogram or custom graphic to add another layer of elegance. We also like that this option has an abundance of pockets and card slots to make organization easier.
Boka Fresh on the Go
The Boka Fresh on the Go set was made for travelers who avoid checking a bag at all costs. It includes everything they’ll need to maintain good oral hygiene while on the go. The toothpaste is TSA-approved and the mouthwash — this is the best part — comes in the form of chewable tablets, so it won’t even count toward their liquid quota.
Jamaica Vibes
Jamaica Vibes is one of the latest in the Assouline coffee table book family — and possibly one of the most fun options to date. The stunning visual-first book will allow travelers to reminisce about any time spent in Jamaica (or dream about future trips) while the cover and spine of the book will add a dose of elegant and trendy style to coffee tables and bookshelves.
Contiki Tour
You can’t go wrong with the gift of travel itself. If you’re looking for a big-ticket experience gift for a younger traveler in your life, look no further than a Contiki tour. The pre-packaged trips will take them all over the world with like-minded young people and range from exploring the Garden Route in South Africa to road-tripping through the Balkans.
Epicka Universal Travel Adapter
Sure, a travel adapter might not immediately come off as the most exciting gift. But any traveler will tell you just how valuable a reliable one really is. The Epicka Universal Travel Adapter is the best travel adapter in our book; it works in more than 150 countries and it’s super compact and easy to pack thanks to the modular design. Plus, you can always pair it with a flashier item like a travel-themed phone case .
SereneLife Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board
Amazon
The SereneLife Stand-up Paddle Board is an excellent option for anyone who wants to bring the spirit of resort life home. We tested out a variety of inflatable paddle boards and our team agrees that this is the best board on the market thanks to the lightweight, portable design and impressive stability in the water.
LARQ Bottle PureVis
The Larq Self-cleaning Water Bottle is a true game changer for all kinds of travelers. The smart bottle uses UV technology to not just disinfect itself but also to purify the water you’re drinking. This means the jetsetter you’re shopping for will be able to comfortably drink from most water sources without worrying about getting sick.
Tommy Bahama Backpack Beach Chair
The Tommy Bahama Backpack Beach Chair is simply the best beach chair around — and it makes a great gift for road-trippers and camping enthusiasts alike. It’s super easy to transport thanks to the folding backpack design, and is surprisingly comfortable due to the adjustable head pillow and elongated seat. We also like that the frame is rust-proof, meaning it’s perfect for using at the beach or in the rain.
Intelligent Change Inc. The Five Minute Journal
Sometimes, it can be hard to live in the moment and absorb all the magic that is travel — but a gratitude journal can help ensure your globetrotter stays centered on the go. The Five Minute Journal takes, as advertised, takes just five minutes of a traveler’s time; but jotting down their thoughts for those few minutes will help them remember and appreciate the most exciting parts of their day while traveling or at home.
Andobil Car Phone Holder Mount
The best car phone holder mount in our book is the Andobil Car Phone Holder Mount, and it’ll make a great gift for road trippers and car commuters. It’s super easy to install and, once set up, is incredibly stable and easy to use while on the go. There’s also space to plug in a charger so drivers won’t have to mess around with their phone just to get some juice.
Puffer Hug 418 Scarf
Think of the Puffer Hug 418 Scarf as a stylish and equally practical alternative to the fishing vest. Hear us out: this cozy accessory serves as a regular scarf but also has tons of pockets for things like a smartphone or passport. It’s great for wearing to the airport when you need to have documents at the ready but is equally sensible for wearing to explore a new city.
Slip Silk Skinny Scrunchies
The Slip Pure Silk 4-pack Skinny Scrunchies is a fail-safe gift for travelers who want to care for their hair while they're away. The silk design is gentle on the hair and is designed to not pull or cause breakage, even with regular use. We also really like the elegant patterns and colors of the scrunchies, which can easily double as cute arm candy among a stack of bracelets.
Vinarmour Travel Wine Carrier
Wine-loving travelers will flip for the Vinarmour Travel Wine Carrier. This stunning carrier is designed to transport a bottle of wine without any risk of breakage. It features sufficient padding to keep the bottle safe while in transit, but it’s also made from leak-proof material — so even if the bottle was already damaged and cracks while in cargo, it won’t spill on the rest of your luggage.
The Harmonist Travel Coffret
The Harmonist
The Harmonist Travel Coffret is a game-changer when it comes to feeling fresh and relaxed in transit. The set of three heavily-concentrated perfumes were designed to foster a sense of calmness and relaxation thanks to the various notes, including patchouli, pomelo, Bulgarian rose, and vanilla. It also comes with a striking travel case to keep the vials safe in transit.
Twelve South AirFly Pro
The Twelve South AirFly Pro is a T+L editor favorite and such an easy way to upgrade the economy experience. This handy little device allows travelers to use their own Bluetooth headphones or earbuds with the inflight entertainment system rather than having to use the sub-par freebies provided by the airline. The AirFly is super easy to use as well — all you have to do is plug it into the headphone jack on the plane and pair it with your headphones.
Four Seasons Velvet Slippers
Four Seasons
There’s something inherently luxurious about slipping into a pair of hotel slippers upon check in — and the Four Seasons Velvet Slippers amplify that feeling and bring it home. These stunning slippers are made in Italy from sleek velvet and cotton with the Four Seasons logo embroidered on the top. The elastic back and rubber sole make them appropriate for both indoor and outdoor use.
Birdie Personal Safety Alarm
Here’s one for the solo women travelers on your list. The She's Birdie Personal Safety Alarm is designed to fit incognito in her handbag or pocket — but if she finds herself in any kind of trouble, it’s easy to grab and sound the alarm to draw attention and deter an attack. All she has to do is pull off the top tab to activate the 130-decibel siren and flashing strobe light.
Dagne Dover Tech Organizer
Dagne Dover
Nobody thinks they need a tech organizer while traveling, but when you take into account all the cables and adapters required to make international travel smooth, having a specific spot to keep everything untangled is major. The Dagne Dover Arlo Tech Organizer is small enough to pop into a carry-on but has plenty of interior space to store everything a traveler needs.
Lindsay Albanese Toptote Leather Hat Holder
Traveling with a cute hat seems like a great idea, but in practice it can be a bit of a pain. The Lindsay Albanese Toptote Leather Hat Holder allows travelers to bring along a wide-brim hat without having to wear it the entire commute or risking it getting crushed in a suitcase. The clip attaches to the brim of a hat and the built-in carabiner lets you pop it onto a handbag or carry-on for a hands-free solution.
Diptyque Travel Cleansing & Moisturizing Set
This cleansing and moisturizing set will be a welcome addition to any routine whether at home or on the go. The decadent set includes both rinse-free and regular hand wash as well as a moisturizing hand lotion — all of which smell just like your favorite luxury hotel bath products. We also like that this option comes with a cute carrying case that makes it easy to store the items in a handbag or carry-on.
Vasco V4 Language Translator Device
World travelers always have a few favorite travel products they swear by. For traveling abroad, the Vasco V4 Language Translator Device makes the experience so much easier — not just on the traveler but on the locals as well. This genius device provides instant voice translation in 108 languages and comes with free lifetime internet to ensure it’ll always be functional anywhere in the world. The instant translations mean your traveling pal can have real-time conversations with people across the globe, even if there’s no common spoken language.
Pokoloko Harem Towel
The Pokoloko Harem Towel is handcrafted using 100 percent Turkish cotton by artisans in Turkey — and it’s the perfect beach bag essential. It’s very lightweight and rolls down much smaller than the average towel. However, it’s also incredibly absorbent and quick-drying, so travelers can pop it back into their beach bag at the end of the day without worrying about lugging home a soggy towel.
lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag 1L
It’s called the Everywhere Belt Bag for a reason! This Lululemon staple has quickly become a cult classic for travelers (it has quite literally been everywhere this year). The adjustable belt bag is super convenient for everything from hiking to exploring cities hands-free, and the durable nylon material means you won’t have to worry about potential spillage or getting stuck in the rain (it’ll wipe clean with a bit of water).
Longchamp Le Pliage Filet Mesh Bag
Regular travelers know the importance of throwing a decent-sized tote into their luggage. After all, you never know when you’ll need the extra bit of space while on the road. The Longchamp Le Pliage Filet L Mesh Bag offers a sophisticated take on the humble mesh tote complete with a snap closure and both a top handle and shoulder strap for added versatility.
Conair Travel Garment Dual Voltage Steamer
The Conair Power Steam Handheld Travel Garment Steamer makes looking and feeling put together on the road a snap. The compact steamer is small enough to slip into a carry-on bag and pull out as needed while traveling. It boasts a 35-second heat-up time so the traveler in your life can power away wrinkles and creases in no time at all.
YETI Roadie 24 Cooler
The Yeti Roadie 24 Hard Cooler will be well received by the road trip warriors and beach bums on your list. Not only is it super aesthetically pleasing, but it can also actually fit an incredible amount in such a compact space — we’re talking up to 33 cans, 26 pounds of ice, and even full-sized bottles of wine.
Loop Quiet Ear Plugs
You don’t quite realize how high-quality the Loop Quiet earplugs are until you really need them. The surprisingly stylish earplugs were designed to be comfortable while sleeping and will serve as a major blessing the next time your gift recipient has been put in a hotel room next to a crying baby or bachelorette party.
Paravel Mini Fold-up Backpack
The Paravel Mini Fold-Up Backpack earned the top spot in our books as the best mini backpack of 2024 , and it’s easy to see why. It’s easy to fit all the essentials — think a tablet, a wallet, sunscreen, and shoes — but it also folds down into the size of a wallet when not in use, which makes it great for tucking into a carry-on bag in case of emergencies. We also love that this bag has the option to be monogrammed, making your gift all the more thoughtful.
Béis The Cosmetic Case
We love Béis for its cheeky and innovative take on travel accessories — and the Cosmetic Case in particular is one of our top picks of the year for best makeup cases . We love that this option is highly durable but still elegant in design and also has a generous-sized built-in mirror that makes it easy to do makeup or skincare while on the go. It’s also worth noting that this case is available in eight different colorways, so you can choose one that’ll best suit their specific style.
Paravel Aviator Carry-on Plus
If the traveler on your list is in need of a new carry-on, you’ll want to consider the Paravel Aviator Carry-on Plus. This innovative carry-on bag earned top marks in our books as the best piece of luxury luggage thanks to its super sturdy build and variety of organization options within the luggage. It’s also worth noting that all carriers are ethically produced — which makes this a great gift for conscious travelers as well.
Baggu Nylon Crescent Bag
We love a crossbody bag for travel — and the Baggu Nylon Crest Bag is definitely the top crossbody bag of the year in our books. We love just how versatile this bag is and how easily it can be packed into a suitcase without adding any bulk or weight. The crossbody bag is also highly durable and even machine washable, which is a huge perk for travelers who don’t want to have to baby their accessories while on the go.
Awake Caffeinated Chocolate Energy Bar
Frequent flyers know the perils of trying to get a good cup of coffee on an airplane or in an airport — which is why the Awake Caffeinated Chocolate Energy Bites are such a game changer for caffeine-loving travelers. The tasty chocolate bites have the caffeine equivalent of half a cup of coffee, and also offer a sweet sugar kick that’ll help them get through everything from red-eye flights to long layovers.
Nitecore MT21C Flashlight
You might not immediately think of a flashlight as a standout gift for a traveler — but a rechargeable flashlight is a packing essential for travelers who do any kind of adventure or outdoor traveling. The Nitecore MT21C Flashlight is one T+L editors swear by thanks to its compact size, impressive brightness, and longevity (it has a maximum output of 1000 lumens and a peak beam distance of 201 yards). It’s also adjustable by 90 degrees which can be highly practical for getting into tight spaces.
Moon Dissolving Whitening Strips
There’s something about indulging in a self-care routine while flying that can make an economy seat feel like you’re sitting in first class — and what could be more luxurious than whitening your teeth while on the go? The MOON Teeth Whitening Strips were designed to be used while traveling, the strips work the same as your classic Crest variety, but all you have to do is stick them on and wait for them to dissolve — no sink or rinsing required.
Amazon Fire HD 10 Tablet
Sure — most airplanes have built-in in-flight entertainment, but boy does it suck when you board a flight only to realize there’s no screen on the seat back. The Amazon Fire HD 10 Tablet will let them download all their favorite shows and movies to watch on the flight. It’s also great for reading e-books or checking into social media while in transit.
Aer Travel Weekender
Aer
The Aer Travel Weekender is our favorite carry-on duffel bag right now thanks to its versatility and durable design. We like that this bag can easily be used as a top-handle tote, but that it also has a built-in strap that makes it easy to use as a duffel bag while on the go. It’s worth noting that the bag also has a 16-inch padded laptop sleeve, which means they’ll be able to keep their laptop or tablet safe and secure while traveling.
Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 3
A portable speaker makes a great addition to any traveler’s packing list. Not only does it ensure the vibes will be good no matter where they find themselves, it’s also a great tool for playing white noise and making it easier to fall asleep in unfamiliar places. We highly recommend the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 3; this one is super easy to connect to any phone and is both waterproof and dustproof — so they won’t have to be precious with it while traveling.
nCamp Café Portable Coffee Maker
If you’ve got a coffee lover on your list, the nCamp Café Portable Coffee Maker is going to be a game changer in terms of the quality of their morning joe. This compact coffee maker is especially great to bring on camping trips because it crafts espresso-style coffee without any power source. The only thing they’ll need is a hot water source and they’ll have cafe-quality brew wherever they go (which, let’s be honest, will also save them a ton of money on morning coffee).
Nintendo Switch
Travel can be endlessly thrilling and entertaining — but there’s a lot of downtime that comes with it as well. A Nintendo Switch is going to make a great gift for the gamers on your list (or those traveling with little ones). The beauty of the Switch is that they’ll be able to use it as a handheld to pass the time at airports or train stations, but it can also be set up television-style to play party games at the hotel room or Airbnb.
Infinity Pillow Travel Pillow
Infinity Pillow
Unless you’re lucky enough to get a miraculous upgrade to business class, sleeping on a plane can be a struggle. That’s where the Infinity Pillow Travel Pillow comes in. This innovative pillow was designed with neck support and can be adapted to work whether they’re in the window, aisle, or even the middle seat. It’s also temperature regulating, so it won’t make them sweaty mid-flight, and doubles as an eye mask.
Call You When I Land: A Memoir
Travel writer and author Nikki Vargas spares no detail in her evocative memoir Call You When I Land , which follows Vargas as she relentlessly pursues her dream career, and in turn, dream lifestyle. The juicy travelogue is ideal for fans of Eat Pray Love or What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding . Oh — and there’s a love story and murder mystery baked into it as well. Can you say beach read?
Nimble Champ Portable Charger
It doesn’t matter how streamlined their travel is — every traveler struggles with having juice for all their devices while on the go. Sometimes it’s a lack of adequate adapters, and sometimes it’s long excursions with no charging outlet in sight. Either way, a decent portable charger just makes things easier. We love the Nimble Champ Portable Charger in particular. It’s compact and durable, but it’s also eco-friendly having been crafted in part from recycled water bottles.
Slip Lovely Lashes Contour Sleep Mask
Traveling without a sleep mask sucks — especially if you’re sensitive to light or plan to sleep on the plane. The Slip Lovely Lashes Contour Sleep Mask in particular is an awesome gift and great alternative to the classic eye mask model. It’s crafted from real silk, so it won’t pull or mess up their hair. It also has a contoured eye area so it won’t squish their eyes or lashes, even if they use it all night long.
Away The Insider Packing Cubes
Away The Insider Packing Cubes are a game changer for travelers who want to pack light and travelers who like to pack more than they might need. For starers, these packing cubes allow them to organize their clothing by categories, which allows them to have a better grasp on exactly what they have. The cubes also gently compress clothing which makes it easy to fit everything into a carry-on or smaller-sized suitcase as needed.
Skyborne iTravel Folio 4.0
Staying organized and on the ball on travel days makes the whole experience go much smoother — and that’s why we love the Skyborne iTravel Folio 4.0. This sleek travel wallet is designed to fit all their travel documents (including passport, smartphone, AirPods, and more) in one stylish zippered wallet. It also has built-in charging capabilities to keep their electronics juiced up, no matter where they are.
Rewined Bordeaux Candle
If they’re always waxing poetic about their trip to wine country, why not gift them an olfactory memory of their time? The Bordeaux Candle by Rewined comes as an homage to the French countryside with notes of Maritime Pine, Crushed Herbs, and Cypress that are designed to transport them right back to the vineyards of Bordeaux. Rewined’s candles are also beautifully made and will look just as good as they smell on a coffee table or kitchen counter.
Pocket Tripod Universal Kit
Pocket Tripod
Let’s be honest: no matter how cool we think we are, everyone wants to get some good photos to share on social media (or to look back on) while traveling. The Pocket Tripod Universal Kit is a super compact and discreet alternative to the larger tripods on the market. It’s about the size of a credit card and is easy to pop onto a smartphone for an instant tripod, wherever they find themselves.
Foreo Luna Mini 2 Facial Cleansing Brush
Traveling can wreak some serious havoc on the skin — which is why skincare-loving travelers (and really anyone who likes a clean face!) will flip for the FOREO LUNA Mini. This innovative skincare tool uses T-sonic pulsations to clean the skin, brushing away any traces of makeup, dirt, or acne-causing bacteria that might be lurking on their face after a long flight or day of exploration.
Audible Membership
If you’re shopping for a traveler who is big on podcasts or listening to audio books while on the go, a subscription to Audible is pretty much a no-brainer. This subscription will get them one free audiobook per month and allow them to listen to all kinds of different books at their own pace while traveling. It’s also a great alternative to packing various books or having to remember an e-reader; all their audiobooks will be accessible right on their smartphone or tablet!
The Essential Guide to Turkish Wine
The Essential Guide to Turkish Wine by wine writer and author Andrea Lemieux is the only English-language anthology you’ll find sharing the ins and outs of Turkish wine. Turkey is one of the oldest wine-producing countries in the world, and Lemieux’s comprehensive guide will inspire them to book a trip to the wine trail of Turkey thanks to her captivating (and comprehensive) descriptions and gorgeous illustrations and visuals to match.
Riemot Luggage Cup Holder
It would be nice to have another set of hands when rolling through the airport, wouldn’t it? Well, that’s where the Riemot Luggage Travel Cup Holder comes in. This handy attachment can fit onto any rolling suitcase or carry-on. It not only accommodates a beverage, but also easily fits a wallet or passport and most smartphones. There’s nothing better than being hands-free without having to dig through a handbag or backpack to get out the essentials.
BasicConcepts Airplane Foot Hammock
Sure — it might look a little cheesy at first glance… but they will be incredibly grateful for this whimsical gift when they’re on hour five of their next red-eye flight. The Basic Concepts Airplane Foot Hammock attaches underneath the tray table, providing them with instant relief of aches and pains that might crop up after sitting upright for hours on end. It can adjust to three different positions as well, so they’ll be able to continue to change their position throughout the flight for added comfort.
Steamline Luggage The Palm Cosmetics Set
Steamline Luggage
Frequent flyers are always on the hunt for streamlined packing accessories — and this cosmetics set from Steamline Luggage is a standout option. It ranks number one in our best travel pouch of 2024 thanks to its charming tropical-inspired prints and the fact that the pouches are crafted from recycled water bottles. The pouches can easily fit inside of one another when not in use and lay flat, which makes them easy to pack and store.
1,000 Places to See Before You Die
1,000 Places to See Before You Die is one of our favorite travel-focused reference books. The anthology is a veritable bucket list that is just as good for armchair travel as it is for reference when planning a trip. We also love flipping through this book to reflect on all the places we’ve been — the intriguing descriptions and photography evoke memories while also seeing even the most popular tourist destinations and monuments in a refreshing new light.
Native Union Universal Sling
The Native Union Universal Sling is designed to pop onto smartphones like a phone case — but it comes with a built-in strap that allows travelers to wear their phone like a crossbody bag or around their neck like a lanyard. It’s available in a variety of colorways and is made from recycled material for a more sustainable approach. It’s perfect for travel as it’s more secure than throwing a phone in a pocket or bag as well.

60 Useful Road Trip Gifts and Basket Ideas for Travelers in 2023
By: Author Kim Tate
Posted on Published: March 2, 2023
Planning a road trip or know someone who is traveling soon? For travelers that are heading out soon, how about you surprise them with some road trip gifts — perhaps you’ll even make them a road trip gift basket! As someone who has taken dozens of roadtrips, these are some of the best road trip gifts you can pack.
These ideas are also perfect for auction gift baskets – this road trip basket below is one I made for our class school auction!
In this article:
Best Road Trip Gifts Ideas
As someone who has taken a LOT of road trips, here are 60 of my favorite road trip gift ideas! This list has a mix of road trip gifts including road trip essentials, road trip gadgets, games for road trips, unique gifts, and even some ideas for family road trip gifts!
Affiliate links are included in this post so I may earn a small commission if you purchase with my link.
Road Trip Essentials
These items are essentials that will help make a road trip more comfortable, safe, and clean. They make great road trip gifts as they're practical gifts and most have a low price. Many of these can be added to a road trip gift basket to fill in space.
Rand McNally 2022 Large Scale Road Atlas
While we all rely on google maps on our phones these days, there's always a chance you'll lose your coverage while driving. A road atlas helps you navigate to where you need to go if you lose signal for some reason. Rand McNally makes great road atlases, this one is spiral bound with large-scale maps but they also make a traditional staple-bound atlas. A road atlas is one of the best road trip gifts.
If you're staying in one particular state or region, you might consider a paper map for that state that you can just store in your glove compartment versus a whole atlas.
Also, keep in mind that digital maps will probably tell you the best way to go to save time or mileage, but it might not be the most scenic way to go. A road atlas can help you look for scenic drives and routes.
While traveling in the car there's nothing worse than getting something on your hands and not being able to wash them. Wet wipes are a great item to pack as they can be used to wipe up spills and messes -- not just for kids! I recommend buying biodegradable eco-friendly wipes.
Hand Sanitizer
Of course over the past couple of years having hand sanitizer handy has been a big part of traveling. But our family has been packing hand sanitizer on road trips for a while. The 8 oz Purell pump bottles fit well in our van cup holders and is easily accessible for all. It's great for using after stops, after fueling up, and before eating.
Paper Towels
Going along with the keeping things clean theme, a roll of paper towels is a great item to pack for a road trip. These come in handy in a variety of situations, cleaning up messes, wrapping up wet or dirty items, or even cleaning up spills in the car.
Facial Tissues (Kleenex)
Having some facial tissues, aka kleenex on hand is helpful since there's a good chance someone will need to blow their nose at some point. These can also come in handy if you need to use an outhouse or "green latrine" while on the road. These travel packs work well for the car but I know some brands make canister-style facial tissues that are supposed to fit in cup holders, too.
Car Trash Bag
While you can certainly use a plastic shopping bag for this purpose, a car garbage bag can make a great road trip gift. This is the one we use and I love that it has an elastic neck which makes it easy to push trash in, plus it has a rolled velcro bottom that you can simply unroll to empty out the garbage when you get to a large garbage can. Great (cheap) gift for road trip travelers!
5 Organization Tips for Road Trips
Here are some tips for keeping your car clean and organized during a road trip -- which will help everyone enjoy the trip more!
Roadside Emergency Kit
A roadside emergency gift is an excellent road trip gift idea -- especially for teen drivers! You never know when you'll have an issue on the road and one of these items might just help you avoid a serious issue or inconvenience.
5 Steps to Prep Your Car for a Road Trip
And don't forget to make sure your car is road-ready and any car maintenance is up to date. You'll also want to make sure your spare tire is in good condition and ready if you get a flat tire.
Car Battery Booster Pack
While the roadside emergency kit above comes with jumper cables, that relies on having another car available to give you a jump. When you're on the road, a car battery booster pack is a good idea since you can jump your car without relying on the help of strangers.
First Aid Kit
While you should make sure you're covered for serious medical concerns and can access a hospital, minor scrapes can be fixed with a travel first aid kit. Remember some ibuprofen/acetaminophen, stomach chews (Pepto Bismol), allergy pills, and bug bite cream. We've used them all on road trips.
Helpful Tips for What to Pack in a Travel First Aid Kit
If you're traveling as a family, here are some helpful tips for what we pack in our travel first aid kit - many items are useful for traveling with kids!
Odor Eliminator Spray & Air Freshener
Let's face it, long stretches in a car with one or more people are going to lead to some stink. Pack along a bottle of air freshener / odor eliminator to help manage smells while on the road. This is an item that many don't think about packing and so makes a great road trip gift!
Reusable Insulated Water Bottle
Water bottles are great for road trips as they help you stay hydrated and can save you money from buying drinks at every stop. Insulated bottles can also be used for coffee in the morning and water later in the day.
I like to have a bottle that has a flip/slider lid and a straw option as those are the easiest for using while driving in my opinion (versus a screw cap bottle). Just make sure to get a bottle that will fit in most cup holders (like these Simple Modern ones)!
A reuseable water bottle is one of the best travel gifts!
If you're planning a long drive with multiple rest stops along the way, it can be useful to have a simple day bag that you can grab if you leave the car for a hike or even to run into a store. A sling bag like this can even hold smaller tablets and books, plus it has a pocket for a water bottle or umbrella.
Facial Wipes
For long, multi-day road trips, facial wipes can come in handy, especially in the summer. These work for men and women and can be useful in helping you feel refreshed and
Being in the car for a long time can lead to some dry lips, so having some lip balm on hand
There's nothing worse than dry eyes, especially when you're driving! Having some eye drops packed in the car can be a real lifesaver on a long road trip.
Dental Floss Picks
Since eating in the car or on the go is pretty standard for road trips, having some dental floss picks packed can help keep your mouth feeling clean after meals. I also try to buy biodegradable ones so I'm not adding plastic to the landfills.
Another comfort item for road trips is lotion. We like to use a pump bottle, but you can also use a travel-size tube,
Microfiber Cleaning Cloths
These microfiber cloths are especially handy for cleaning eyeglasses and sunglasses. But they can also be used for cleaning mirrors or windows or even the screens of DVD players, phones, and tablets.
Polarized Sunglasses
Driving in bright sunlight can be overwhelming and even dangerous. I have eyes that are sensitive to sunlight and a pair of polarized sunglasses is a huge help for driving during the day. Even people who don't normally drive with sunglasses can find these useful on the open road!
Slip-On Shoes
While these aren't necessarily a road trip gift you can gift someone you don't know well, slip-on shoes are definitely a road trip essential. You'll be making stops often and wearing shoes that tie will slow you down and become an annoyance for taking on and off when you're not driving. Of course, if you're a solo driver, you can wear whatever shoes you want since you won't be taking them off while in the car.
Travel Pillow
If you're going to be a passenger on a long road trip, you'll want to pack a travel pillow. Pillows like this one can be useful for traveling and make great gifts for a road trip passenger.
5 Reviews for the Best Travel Pillow
Check out my reviews for these different travel pillows.
Travel Blanket
Another road trip cozy item is a small travel blanket. This is useful for passengers if one person wants to keep the car at a cooler temp than others prefer. I also think being cozy makes it easier to fall asleep. This blanket also makes a great filling item for a road trip gift basket.
Travel Towel
If you're making stops along water and beaches, a travel towel can come in handy. We've stopped at roadside beach pull-outs and have always appreciated having a towel to dry off our legs and feet after taking a little walk in the waves.
Picnic & Outdoor Blanket
Planning some picnics or beach stops along the way? One of these fold-up picnic blankets is one of the best gifts for road trippers who like to enjoy nature along the way.
Reliefband Anti-Nausea Wristband
Keep in mind if anyone suffers from motion sickness while traveling. If so, be sure to pack some items to help with that. You can use medicine like Bonine, essential oils, ginger candies, or a Reliefband tech bracelet that uses electricity to help combat motion sickness.
Car Road Trip Accessories & Gadgets
For techy travelers, many of these road trip accessories and gadgets will seem like essential items! I'm making them their own category as they do offer some convenience and will certainly help plugged-in travelers stay connected while on the open road.
Car Power Inverter USB Charger
So many of us have electronics that will need to be kept charged during a long road trip. This power inverter also allows you to charge larger electronics like a laptop, in addition to having multiple USB ports for everyone to be able to charge their device. Great gift for a road trip with friends or family!
Portable Cooler Refrigerator
For road trippers that want to save money and eat on the road, a portable refrigerator that hooks to a car 12V outlet works great. It keeps food and drinks cool to enjoy later on the trip. This one comes with an AC plug too, so you can bring it in to plug in your hotel room.
We all know that driving can be dangerous, and these days proving who is at fault during an accident can come down to who has proof. A dash cam like this can help you prove what happened if something does go wrong while you're on a trip. (note, some US states do not allow you to mount dashcams to windshields, only dashboards)
If you're an Alexa-loving road tripper, consider "teching out" your car with one of these Echo Auto devices. You'll be able to go hands-free to play music, listen to audiobooks, and even play Alexa games.
Kindle Paperwhite
For travelers who love to read, having a Kindle can be a great gift idea. And for road trips, the glare-free Kindle Paperwhite is perfect for in the car. You can even get them with a trial for Kindle Unlimited which is a great service for avid readers!
Car Charger Phone Vent Mount
We love having this car mount in all our cars and I love that it charges my phone, too. Fits most phones and vents.
Handsfree Bluetooth FM Transmitter
If you or your friends have an older car, they might want one of these Bluetooth transmitters that let them connect their phones to their car through an FM radio station. Great for allowing you stream your favorite playlists and audiobooks from your phone to your car sound system.
If you like to keep your car clean while traveling, having a car vacuum on hand can be useful. This one plugs into a 12V outlet in the car and can help keep crumbs and dirt at bay. Make a great road trip gift!
Portable HEPA Air Purifier/Deodorizer
Since most road trips involve fast food and eating in the car, it's no surprise that your car can start to stink. This car gadget works to clean, purify, and deodorize the air. No more coming out to a car that smells like french fries from the day before!
Digital Tire Pressure Gauge
This handy road trip accessory gadget helps you check your tire pressure. It's always a good idea to drive with proper inflation and know if you might have a leak so you can get it fixed quickly!
Car Trunk Organizer
Here's another handy organization item that makes a great gift for road trips! Help your best friend keep things in order with a hanging trunk organizer. This one is great for vans and SUVs, but you can get sedan-sized organizers that work well for cars.
Car Window Shade
If you're buying a road trip gift for a group or someone who is traveling as a group, these car window shades can be useful. Often they're used by families for babies, but they work well for any passengers that don't want the sun beating down on them while they watch movies or sleep.
Cleaning Gel for Car
Here's another fun road trip accessory that makes for an affordable gift. This cleaning gel (aka slime) will seep into tight crevices and pick up rogue crumbs that a vacuum just can't quite reach.
Family Road Trip Gift Basket Ideas
Here are some great family road trip gift ideas that are perfect if you're shopping for someone who will be road-tripping with kids! These road trip gift basket items will keep the kids entertained and comfortable on the open road.
Road Trip Travel Games Gift Box
Here's a fun set of road trip games and activities for kids and it's already packaged together, making it ideal for adding to a family road trip gift basket!
Kids Travel Tray with Dry Erase Board
This travel tray can be a lifesaver for traveling families. Kids will have a surface to help them draw and eat, plus handy storage pockets for keeping their toys and activities from falling in between the seats!
Backseat Car Organizer with iPad Holder
If the kids are planning to watch some movies or shows on a tablet during the road trip, having a hanging pocket or mount can come in handy. This seat organizer serves that purpose as well as offering pockets for storing away other items.
Car Seat Organizer with Cup Holders
If you don't like the backseat mounted organizers, these organizers can sit in the middle seat next to kids to give them easy access to toys and snacks. Plus this one has cup holders!
Car Seat Headrest Pillows
One of the best ways kids can stay happy on a road trip is by sleeping, whether you're talking toddlers or teens. This neat road trip headrest gadget creates a cushioned rest for kids or adults to lean against which supports their heads.
Printable Road Trip Games for Kids - License Plate, Bingo, I Spy...
Check out my post with free printable road trip activities!
Shotgun! The Hilarious Family Card Game for Road Trips
Here's a fun road trip game perfect for grade school and teen-aged kids. Adults can even play along. This game is sure to bring laughs and great family memories!
Hidden Pictures Book Set
These are classics and I remember loving them when I was a kid. This pack of hidden picture books will keep kids entertained in the car and give parents a bit of peace and quiet while they search. :)
Free Printable Road Trip Scavenger Hunt for Kids
Print off this fun road trip scavenger hunt.
These are fun sensory toys for kids, letting them use their imagination to craft and build. They're fairly mess-free although you likely don't want to leave them in the hot sun as they're coated in wax to allow molding.
Crayola Color Wonder Mess Free
The Crayola Color Wonder Mess-Free art sets are perfect for traveling kids. The markers only work on the special paper, so no worries about marker messes on your car, and no stress about melting crayons!
Kids Travel Bag Activities to Pack for Vacation
Here are some fun travel activities kids can bring on the road.
Road Trip Activities and Travel Journal
This fun book is packed full of road trip games and activities for traveling kids. Great gift for kids who are writing.
LCD Writing Tablet for Kids
This brings back some memories of etch-a-sketch for me! Kids can draw whatever they want and then at the push of a button the screen is clear and ready for a new design. The name-brand version of this toy is Boogie Board in case you want to avoid the "knock-off" versions.
Dramamine Motion Sickness for Kids
If you're buying a road trip gift for a family who hasn't traveled much with their kids, adding these kids' motion sickness tablets could be a lifesaver.
Road Trip Gift Cards & Memberships
Another great idea for road trip gifts is to give travel lovers gift cards or memberships that will be useful on the road.
Roadtrippers Plus
One of my favorite tools I used on a recent road trip was Roadtrippers. It's a road trip planning app that helps you find great spots to see and things to do along your route. It even includes reviews and photos from fellow travelers. It's a perfect road trip gift!
National Parks Pass
If the road trip will be heading past national parks in the US, giving the gift of a National Parks Pass ($80) can be a great idea. Plus, there are even ways people can get a parks pass for free!
Audible Membership
Audiobooks are great to listen to on road trips, and a gifted membership to Audible will help road trippers stay entertained and maybe even learn something new while on the road.
AAA Membership
AAA is the leader in roadside assistance memberships, so a membership for their service can make a great gift. Many hotels also offer a AAA discount on hotel rooms which could help a traveler save money!
Gas Gift Cards
Buying a gift card for gas can be a bit tricky as you might not know what gas stations will be popular on the road trip route. However it's a fun gift idea with a definite road trip theme, so even a small amount to a local area gas station can get used.
Road Trip Snacks
Lastly, there’s nothing quite like snacks to help make a road trip great! Read my full list of road trip snacks , but these are a few of my favorites that make great gifts for a road trip gift basket!
- Fruit Leathers/Snacks
- Granola Bars
- Rice Krispie Treats
- Animal Crackers
I hope this list has been helpful. Many of these road trip gifts are a great way to prepare travel lovers for their upcoming trip while also providing useful gifts that they might not have thought of! Let me know if you have any other gift ideas I didn’t list.

For more help with homemade gift baskets, check out this comprehensive guide on how to make gift baskets.
To make your basket look prettier, you can add decorations in the color of the flag of the country too. For example, by buying fillers (such as crinkle paper shreds in the colors of the flag), add an actual flag of the country, or paint the basket.

Occasion – Homemade gift basket ideas
Unfortunately, you can’t find any premade travel basket ideas online for specific occasions such as Christmas, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and more.
But don’t worry.
It’s actually really easy to make an event-themed gift basket yourself. Yes, really. Even if you’re not one of the creative types. I’ve got your back.
There are two super simple ways in which you can curate a travel gift basket for a special occasion.
- Through decoration
- Through international products
The first method is by far the easiest. You simply buy regular travel gifts and baskets (as you would for any gift basket). And then just decorate the basket in the theme of the occasion.
So let’s say you’re making a travel-themed Easter basket, you simply add Easter grass as a filler, Easter eggs for decoration, and a Happy Easter card to finish it off.
For Christmas, same story. Simply buy Christmas-themed fillings, and a Christmas card, and then add Christmas ornament such as Christmas balls, tinsels, and pinecones.
The second method requires a bit more creativity, but luckily I’ve helped you out with that one too. So let’s have a look at all the fun homemade ideas for travel gift baskets by occasion.

24 Wedding Welcome Bags and Favors Your Guests Will Love
Destination wedding welcome bags and favors are a great way to show your appreciation to guests who have traveled the distance and spent a lot money to attend your big day. But all too often, wedding gifts for guests just get dumped in the trash or left behind because they’re impractical. That’s why I asked hundreds of former destination brides & grooms to tell me about the wedding welcome bags and destination wedding favors their guests loved, as well as the misses.
We rounded up their answers below in our list of the 24 best wedding welcome bag ideas. But before we get to that, let’s answer some basic questions you may have about destination wedding gift bags.
So . . . what are destination wedding welcome bags?
Sounds fun but why wedding welcome bags over an after-wedding favor, do i have to give destination wedding welcome bags to guests, 1. wedding welcome bags, 2. welcome letter & itinerary, 3. flip flops, 4. pashmina shawls, 6. first aid kits for wedding welcome bags, 7. deck of cards, 8. waterproof key card holder, 11. door hangers, 12. coasters, 13. lip balm, 14. shot glasses, 15. luggage tags, 16. bottle opener, 17. wine stopper, 19. can sleeves, 20. water bottles/tumblers, 21. city guides, 22. treats from local vendors, 23. kid-friendly wedding welcome bags, 24. mini aloe vera gel, wedding welcome bags & favors: the misses, who pays for the wedding welcome bags, what is the average cost of welcome bags, how much should i spend on my destination wedding welcome bags, are wedding welcome bags per person or room, any money-saving tips, 1. research your destination’s duty-free allowance., 2. keep the receipts for all of your welcome bag contents., 3. do’s & don’ts to pack your welcome bags efficiently, 4. explain the purpose of your wedding favor bags, can i mail destination wedding welcome bags, how do you give out destination wedding welcome bags to guests, pin this for later.
These are essentially wedding gifts for guests who are traveling for your big day. At a traditional hometown wedding, couples usually provide their guests with wedding favors when they leave the reception. Destination wedding welcome bags deliver the same special impact, just sooner!
Welcome bags, out of town bags, and favors are used interchangeably throughout this post because essentially “ destination wedding favors ” are placed inside a “ welcome bag ” and given to out of town guests .
It’s important to remember that guests are not only attending your wedding, but they’re also on vacation. You’re their host and travel advisor, of sorts. A wedding welcome bag will not only show them how grateful you are for their attendance, but that you’re ready to provide them with a wonderful experience from the moment they step off the plane.
Do you have to? No. Would it be a really nice gesture and token of your appreciation? Absolutely! This is your big day and you make the rules. I know you’re putting a lot of time and money into your dream day, and that can be overwhelming. But remember: So are your loved ones. They’re taking off work and spending their own money on travel to celebrate your love. All things considered, a welcome bag is just a small gesture to show your gratitude and set the tone for a memorable week or weekend.
But at the end of the day, it’s your call. Your guests won’t expect welcome bags so they’ll be pleasantly surprised to receive them. On the other hand, if you skip them, they won’t miss them since they weren’t expecting them in the first place.
What to Put in Your Wedding Welcome Bags
Below is a list of the 24 best destination wedding welcome bag contents and favors according to real destination brides we polled. The biggest welcome bag hits are items that your guests wouldn’t think to bring for themselves, items they could easily forget to bring, or gifts that will make their trip easier and more comfortable.
Here are the top wedding welcome bag ideas for hotel guests in no particular order.
Wedding bags are probably the most popular destination wedding gifts for guests, and with good reason. Not only are beach bags a practical gift that your guests will put to good use during the trip (and future travel), but you can also fill them up with some fun destination wedding favors. The beautiful welcome bags pictured below can be easily personalized with your wedding destination, your names and wedding date all for a very affordable price.

A welcome letter is a simple but very impactful item that should be a part of every welcome bag. When we’re caught up in the wedding planning journey, it can be easy to forget just what a big sacrifice our guests are making. They are taking time off work/school, spending thousands of dollars and using up their own vacation time just to attend your wedding. A welcome letter is a really personal touch that you can add to your gift bags to express your appreciation.
Although it may seem small, my guests loved their welcome letters and many took them home as a keepsake. There are some really gorgeous high-quality cards with a thoughtful welcome letter on one side and a full itinerary on the reverse side. You can personalize them with any wording you’d like and there are tons of gorgeous designs to choose from .
I gave flip-flops as wedding gifts for guests who attended my destination wedding, and I can personally attest to the fact that they were a huge hit. Hand these out at the reception and your guests will have absolutely no excuse for not hitting the dance floor . You can buy flip flops in every color and size imaginable at Old Navy for less than $5 each. And if you can find a coupon online or buy these in the winter months, you can get them for even less. You can also find flip-flops like the one pictured above on Etsy with cute personalized tags.
Pashmina shawls are a perfect destination wedding favor, especially if you’re tying the knot on the beach or in a tropical location that gets cool when the ocean breeze ramps up. A Pashmina in your wedding colors is a beautiful wedding gift for guests that they’ll use again and again. Etsy has gorgeous pashmina shawls in almost every color under the sun.
Mini liquor bottles are a really cheap and fun destination wedding favor to throw in your wedding welcome bags. But to make it even more special, try to find liquor produced in your wedding destination. For example, mini tequila bottles are great Mexican wedding favors. And mini Barcelo or Brugal bottles would be a hit for a destination wedding in the Dominican Republic.
Keep in mind that you can’t travel with liquor or mail them, so your best bet is to buy these when you arrive at your destination. And you can even personalize the bottles with some labels or cute favor tags like these .
Wedding First-aid or “hangover recovery kits” have to be one of the most fun and practical items to put in your destination wedding welcome bags. You can buy really cheap travel-sized items like Tylenol or Advil, vitamin c, band-aids, and ear-plugs and just put them all in a super cute personalized bag like the one pictured here which comes in tons of other gorgeous designs and colors !
And you can keep the whole theme going by ordering matching door hangers , welcome letters/itineraries , and key card holders .
18 Practical Items to Put Inside Your Hangover Recovery Kits
Another great favor to put in your wedding welcome bags is a personalized deck of playing cards . Not only will guests enjoy them on the trip, but also back home.
One of the best hotel wedding welcome bag ideas is room key holders! How many times have you been on vacation trying to figure out what to do with your money, credit cards, and hotel key card while you lounge poolside? This is something your guests will never think of bringing themselves, but they’ll be super grateful you did!
Not only are these key card holders practical, but they’re also a really personalized gift! It comes with a double-sided card that has a fun poem on one side and your wedding itinerary on the reverse so your guests will know where to be at all times.
There are many different designs to choose from , you get to personalize all the wording on it, and it comes fully assembled — all for less than $2.

Many of the brides/grooms I polled, chose Cuban cigars as a popular destination wedding favor. I gave away cigars at my destination wedding reception in Mexico, and they were a huge hit so I can personally vouch for this idea.
You can hire a cigar roller at most destinations; but if you have budget constraints, you can just buy the cigars and display them in a personalized humidor , which you can then keep as your own wedding keepsake. And you can even get some personalized matches to go with the cigars.
Edible favors are always a hit at both traditional hometown weddings and destination weddings. But what I especially love about this idea is that you can put your treats in some fun packaging that will really make an impression. There are so many cute travel and beach themed candy packages, that the hard part will be narrowing down your choices. Here are some of my favorites.
Cheeky, no? These affordable and personalized door hangers are such a cute gift. Everyone will know that you had the most amazing wedding ever when they see these hanging all over the resort. And they’ll help your guests get some much-needed rest (or alone time 😉) after your epic reception.
Another hit? Travel themed coasters because it’s something guests can take home and put to good use for years to come.
Lip balm with SPF always comes in handy, and you can add some really cute travel or beach themed labels with your name and wedding date for a personalized touch.
Who doesn’t love shot glasses? I collect them everywhere I go. A fun idea is to put one shot glass on everyone’s place at the reception table and ask them to use their custom shot glasses during the toast.
Another great idea is to use the shot glass to direct guests to their tables. You can put an escort card in each shot glass next to a fun sign that says “ Take a shot & find your seat “. Can you think of a better way to get the party started?!
We also love the shot glasses that can double as a votive candle holder making it an even more practical wedding favor to put in your gift bags.
Probably the most practical of all destination wedding favors is the luggage tag . These can double as table seating cards to make them even more useful.
It’s usually hard to call a bottle opener “adorable” but I will anyway. These are super adorable, functional, and a perfect little favor to put in your destination wedding welcome bags. Your guests will put these to good use at the resort and back at home too.
If you have some wine lovers on your guest list, then they are going to love this destination wedding favor! I am always searching for wine bottle stoppers and would be thrilled to get this in a wedding welcome bag. They’re practical, fun and inexpensive!
If you’re tying the knot in a tropical location, fans are a very inexpensive and really useful addition to your wedding welcome bags. I’m kind of obsessed with fans as a destination wedding favor, so I was like a kid in a candy store when I was researching different fans for this post.
Personally, I adore these program fans that guests can also use too cool down during your nuptials. You know they’ll end up folding your beautiful programs to fan themselves anyway–why not do it for them with much more style!
Bottle or can sleeves are such a popular destination wedding favor that you can now find them in a ton of colors and styles to match your wedding theme.
Another hugely popular item among the brides we surveyed, was personalized water bottles. This is such a practical gift, especially for a destination wedding. Your guests can use it to refill their favorite drink at an all-inclusive resort, or fill it up with water when going on an excursion trip. And the best part is that they can also bring this back home with them and use it in their daily lives.
Remember: You’re their host and travel guide on this magical getaway. A city guide providing them with a list of cute coffee shops, delicious restaurants, local shopping, the best sightseeing, and more will guarantee that each guest has the time of their life.
Celebrate your destination even more by highlighting the best finds from local vendors. You could include handmade sweets and other local treasures that will make your guests feel a warm welcome.
If your destination celebration is kid-friendly, make sure your wedding welcome bag includes a few goodies for the young ones . Something as simple as a beach toy, coloring book, or travel game will make them feel special and keep them busy.
I wish I would have thought about adding Aloe Vera Gel to my own destination wedding welcome bags. This is something most people won’t think to bring but can come in super handy. If you’re not familiar with aloe vera gel, it is what many consider the holy grail when it comes to soothing sunburn. You can buy travel size bottles at any drug store that sells travel size products (i.e. Walgreens, CVS, Walmart). While researching this post, I found these 2-ounce bottles of aloe vera gel which come with personalized labels !
Anything that your guests will intuitively pack for their trip, or that the resort provides is going to be a waste of your time and money. Also, keep in mind that some people are picky about the brand they use on their hair. With this in mind, here are some items that you’ll probably be better off leaving out of your welcome bags.
Shampoo/Conditioner
Beach Balls
Anything too heavy, breakable, bulky or that will just be hard for guests to pack and travel with
Let’s Talk dollars and Cents.
Since the bags also serve as destination wedding favors , it is usually the couple ( or their parents ) who cover the cost. But if you’re concerned about this added expense, there are many ways to craft personalized bags without breaking the bank (keep reading to learn how!).
The overall cost of destination wedding welcome bags ranges from $10 – 100 per bag, but the average is $15-25 per bag (including the contents). You get to decide how simple or elaborate you want your welcome bags to be, which will impact the overall cost.
Keep reading for some money saving tips & ideas below.
In short, it depends on your budget and how big your guest list is. Don’t feel pressured to spend too much–it’s the thought that counts, not the dollar amount. The more personalized you make each bag, the more luxe it will seem.
If you have a smaller guest list or a big budget you may be able to splurge and spend $20-40 on each bag. But if you have a lot of guests or a tight budget, you can give out a few fun and practical goodies that are only $2-3 each. For example, a hangover recovery kit or resort key card holders .
If you’re still seeing dollar signs, remember that these bags will not only include an array of useful goodies to make your guest’s trip more comfortable, but they also contain your wedding itinerary , and they serve as a keepsake wedding favor for guests. So you’re killing 3 birds with one stone!
Good news for your budget: The wedding welcome bag is per room. However, I do recommend personalizing each bag based on the occupants of the room. For example, if there are two guests in a room, and you’re including something they’ll each need (i.e. flip flops or lip balm), then include two in the one bag. And if the room includes kids, why not provide a few toys to keep them busy? Their parents will be grateful too!
Of course! I was the queen of deals for my own big day so I hear you loud and clear. First, make a list of the items you’d like to include in your destination welcome bags and begin to prioritize them. Which goodies are a must-have? Dedicate your dollars to those!
Then make sure you take advantage of discounts. Wedding season is an all year round thing so there are always discount codes and promos to take advantage of. A good way to get discounts is to sign up for vendor newsletters to get 10% (or more) off your purchase. Also, make sure to follow wedding social media accounts to stay in the loop for any deals or promotions.
Time to pack! How do you travel with destination wedding welcome bags?
Packing for a destination wedding is tricky! Your packing list is long enough before you even add all these goodies for your guests. To make things easier, here are a few things to remember before you get ready to go:
Every international destination has a duty-free allowance. That is, the max value of merchandise you can bring into the country tax-free (this is why you see all those “duty-free” stores in airports). Before you start planning your wedding welcome bag, research the allowance for your destination because every country is different.
For example, as I write this post, Mexico’s allowance is $500 in addition to your personal luggage. This can change, so always research the most updated allowance on the Customs Agency website for your destination .
The more you research upfront, the better your chances are of passing customs without any issues.
If customs questions you, you’ll be able to quickly prove that you’re abiding by their maximum allowance, and they won’t be able to over-tax you based on their own inaccurate assumptions.
- Do your best to keep the wedding bag contents as small as possible. For instance, pack travel size gifts , foldable items, etc.
- Don’t assemble the welcome bags until you arrive. Grab that first cocktail and have a gift-packing party after you check in to your hotel.
- If you’re feeling anxious or think your merchandise may surpass the duty-free allowance, simply split up the items between your luggage and that of a family member or close friend.
- Another tip is to pack all gifts into a cheap checked bag. Once your nuptials are done, you can leave the bag behind or pack it with souvenirs on the way home.
Even if you have a receipt for all items, it would help to write a letter in English and your destination’s local language explaining the purpose of the merchandise in your bag. Also make sure you attach the aforementioned receipt to make this backup plan both effective and personalized.

- The Ultimate Destination Wedding Packing Checklist
Are you thinking it may be easier to mail the wedding welcome bags ahead of time? Before you run to the post office, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.
Firstly, this is the riskiest option because packages can get lost in the mail and never make it to your destination. Another thing to keep in mind is that your merchandise will still need to clear customs even through the mail. And finally, check with your resort ahead of time to ask if they’re even willing to receive your mail. Some will not.
Ok, so you’ve planned, paid, packed, and arrived! It’s time to distribute the wedding welcome bags to your loved ones. Now, what’s the best way to do this? Depending on your venue, itinerary, and general availability, here are a few ways you can give out welcome bags:
- My personal favorite? Hand them out yourself. Your loved ones are flying hundreds, if not thousands, of miles to celebrate your love story. Greeting them in the lobby or knocking on their hotel door with a smile and a welcome bag is just one way to let them know how happy you are that they came. Although this option requires some info-gathering and time management, I think it’s well worth it.
- If personal delivery is not your style, host a welcome party and pass out every welcome bag at once.
- Just picture your guests’ surprised faces when they open their rooms to find welcome bags on their beds. Check with your resort in advance to see if they’ll put the bags in the room, or give them to each guest at check-in. Although, some resorts will not do any of these options, others may do it as a courtesy or for a fee. In any case, it’s worth asking. After all, the worse they can say is no.
- Give the bags to your guests at home to start their travel off right. This will immediately show them how much you appreciate their attendance. Not to mention, you get to skip issues with customs!
So there it is! The ultimate guide to a warm welcome. I hope you feel prepared to plan and pack your wedding welcome bags. I know your guests will love you for them. Don’t forget to pin this for later. Happy planning!

My Top Gifts for Travelers for the Holidays
Travelers can be a fickle group of people to buy gifts for. We’re constantly coming and going, we usually don’t carry a lot of stuff with us, and no two travelers are alike. Finding the perfect gift for the traveler in your life can be tricky.
While a plane ticket is never a bad idea (I’m a window seat in case anyone is thinking of getting me one), I’ve put together this ultimate gift guide for travelers as there’s a lot of great travel gear out there these days that helps people travel cheaper and better.
Even me, the gear-adverse traveler, likes a lot of this stuff!
This is stuff I actually think is super useful. No nonsense. No fluff. Just the best gifts for intrepid travelers and globetrotting nomads.

Founded and designed by Traveler contributor and mom Jordi Lippe-McGraw , PAK Rêve’s Wilder Bundle is especially ideal for families looking to stay organized during their travels. Your giftee can also keep their suitcase clutter-free by utilizing handy travel accessories like timeless leather travel pouches, a space-saving hanging toiletry bag, or even a set of leakproof magnetic capsules.
Additionally, to make the in-flight experience all the more enjoyable and relaxing, splurge on a sumptuous cashmere travel set complete with a blanket, eye mask, and zippered storage pouch for convenient carrying. Alternatively, treat your giftee to a weighted sleep mask or memory foam pillow so they can catch some zzz’s ( even in a dreaded middle seat! ).
Need even more inspiration? Consider snagging a chic passport holder , a Traveler -favorite belt bag , a customizable piece of luggage that’ll last for years, or an uber-versatile weekender bag that’s perfect for shorter sojourns.

Beauty & skincare products
Surprise and delight your lucky gift recipient with something they’ll truly love and use—both at home, on the go, and away on vacation. You can’t go wrong gifting timeless skincare staples like good ol’ SPF (especially one from beloved brand Supergoop ) or a soothing, sensitive-skin-approved, redness-banishing facial spray they can spritz on mid-flight.
Hydration is the name of the travel game, especially on airplanes where cabin air is dry and humidity levels are low. That’s where nourishing lip balms and skin salves come into play, both of which make excellent gifts. Meanwhile, beauty enthusiasts of all ages will appreciate tried-and-true essentials like a botanical-infused hair care set that’s TSA-approved, or a restorative hair mask to combat dry and dehydrated strands, which can happen all too often when globetrotting.
Travel-friendly clothing & shoes
When it comes to fashion, comfort is key—and some things just never go out of style. It’s always a good idea to stock up on travel-friendly wardrobe staples , including cute joggers , everyday leggings , and blanket scarves to keep you warm and toasty in flight. Alternatively, present your giftee with a full loungewear set , our uniform for long-haul flights. Last but not least, don’t forget about footwear. When it comes to gifting, options abound, from supportive walking shoes to versatile ballet flats , which, yes, are officially back in style.
Tech-savvy travelers are sure to love the following gifts: A portable sound machine , which easily clips onto backpacks, diaper bags, and totes, makes it easy for kids and adults alike to snooze (almost) anywhere. Wearable tech, including Oura Rings and Apple Watches, is functional and, frankly, pretty neat, tracking biometrics like heart rate, step count, sleep, and more. Meanwhile, a quality pair of noise-canceling headphones can come in especially handy on plane, train, and car rides filled with screaming children, chatty seatmates, and, well, you get the gist.
Allow your giftee to enhance their in-flight entertainment set-up with a Bluetooth wireless transmitter, which lets them pair their wireless headphones to the seatback entertainment system without purchasing a pair of wired headphones while in the air. Finally, a tech accessory travel storage case will help keep wires and cables organized and tangle-free throughout the duration of their trip.
Home & kitchen items
These home and kitchen accessories will inspire wanderlust all year long. Highlights include scented candles and a fragrance diffuser set from one of our favorite hotel brands. In the kitchen, your giftee can enjoy at-home sushi nights, home-cooked Italian pasta courtesy of an incredible pasta maker that rolls and cuts the dough into traditional shapes like lasagna and taglioni, and authentic French press coffee reminiscent of the cups you’d find in a Parisian cafe. Other honorable mentions include a glossy travel-themed coffee-table book that’s chic enough to double as decor and a splurge-worthy sheet set from none other than the Four Seasons, transforming any ol’ bedroom into a luxury suite.
Gourmands will especially love one of these food-centric gifts , which lets them savor the flavors of the world from the comfort of home. For breakfast and brunch, they can feast on bagels and lox from NYC staple Russ & Daughters, while Lauduree’s French macaroons make the perfect afternoon pick-me-up. Similarly, sweet tooths can indulge in Belgian chocolate courtesy of Neuhaus; the 24-piece Collection Box is filled with a combination of pralinés, ganaches, and caramels that are (essentially) edible works of art. Meanwhile, those craving a sweet taste of Italy will especially enjoy the Pastificio G. Di Martino x Dolce & Gabbana Picnic Tin, which is filled with five one-pound pasta bags plus two picnic print placemats. If your giftee likes to try a bit of everything, snag them a snack box filled with Turkish delights, or, for something savory, a gourmet assortment of French cheeses coupled with smoked salmon, pork paté, trout roe, and French-made blinis.

“Are we there yet?” road trip goodie bags will be the solution that you’re looking for to fight boredom on your next family road trip!
Quite possibly the most simple and easy fix to keep kids occupied during long-haul car rides, road trip activity bags will keep your kids entertained when the hours on the road seem endless.
Keep the surprises coming with easy-to-assemble road trip goodie bags!

Table of Contents
Road Trip Goodie Bags: Who are they good for?
Containing snacks, trinkets, printable games, and activities, “Are we there yet?” road trip goodie bags are the perfect addition to adding fun and pizazz to a classic family road trip.
In addition, road trip goodie bags are good for children of any age!
At the time of our first epic road trip, our 3 boys were ages 7, 10, and 12. Though our 10 and 12- year-olds wouldn’t have normally played with trinkets or dollar store arts and crafts, in comes the exception!
All 3 of our children, despite their ages, were fascinated by the road trip goodie bags given to them in the form of a ‘gift’ along a boring stretch of Interstate.
Those of you with younger children will need to substitute age-appropriate snacks and toys.
Likewise, parents of girls vs. boys may choose to add in some gender-specific trinkets .
Alternatively, consider adding Itunes gift cards, books, magazines, and sugary snacks suitable for tweens and teens.
In other words, go with the general idea of these road trip goodie bags and add things that will excite you and your kids!
Additional planning tip: For the most successful, grumbling-free adventure, combine the use of these activity bags with my Top 10 Tips for a Family Road Trip .
Likewise, because traveling with kids ages 1 – 4 presents its own set of ‘challenges’, read up on these toddler-specific road trip activities that are sure to keep them preoccupied!

Road Trip Goodie Bags: How much should I spend?
Each and every one of the following items was purchased at The Dollar Store knowing that their use is intended to be simple and short-lived.
They are basically ‘in-the-moment-sanity savers’.
In other words, nothing don’t buy anything fancy or expensive.
I made 18 bags for each of our 3 children. 9 bags for the way to our destination, and 9 bags for the return trip home.
Each bag contains 2 or 3 Dollar Store items with the exception of a few activity bags that contained more expensive items.
Additional planning tip: The total cost for our 54 “Are we there yet?” road trip activity bags was $90.00.
“Are We There Yet?” Road Trip Goodie Bags
“Are we there yet bags” are intended to be small surprises to give your children throughout the duration of an extended road trip.
They do not replace healthy snacks and meals that should be alternated with the candy and treats mentioned below.
Instead, refer to a reliable road trip food list for healthy meal and snack ideas when traveling.
Select bags based on their portability and size, and be sure to purchase treat bags that children cannot see through.
Likewise, buy enough bags to give to your children every 30 minutes to 1-hour throughout the duration of your family road trip.
1. Notebooks, markers, and stickers
Notebook of plain white drawing paper and a fresh new pack of markers. Insert some stickers for a little something extra.
2. Hand-held pinball game
Hand-held pinball game and a snack-size treat. Perfect to keep small hands busy!
3. Portable dry erase board
Travel size dry erase board and sweet and salty snack mix (or other fun snack!).
Everyone loves a good dry-erase board, but be careful, some of the markers’ ink are hard to get out of clothing.
4. Party favors
Why not have a party in the car?
Colorful party favors can be used as a small, fun toy. Add in some gum to keep the kids extra occupied!
5. Minnie Mouse chapstick and Minnie snack bags
Purchase themed-baggies to make individual portions of various snacks. Accompany the themed bags with a coordinating toy or accessory!
Pick and choose the characters of your choice.
6. Word search puzzle book and multi-colored pen
Help pass time in the car by playing road trip word games that involve family interaction and fun!
For silent play, purchase age-appropriate word search puzzle books, crossword puzzle books, or Sodoku puzzle books.
They may not be exciting for kids, per se, but they sure do pass a huge chunk of time!
7. Travel size play dough
Travel size playdough and a sweet treat that perhaps they have never had before!
Bypass this activity if you’re worried that your children are too small to use playdough without getting it all over the seats’ upholstery.
8. Punch balloons or bubbles
Punch balloons or bubbles are a great idea for a pit stop or roadside activity when everyone is needing to get a little energy out!
9. Felt-art or other coloring Kit with a sweet treat
Pre-packaged art kits are an awesome road trip activity and a perfect addition to your road trip goodie bags!
Because these are something that children are not always exposed to, opening this will be a sweet surprise.
10. Glow stick necklaces for nighttime travel
Kids love nighttime travel! Seeing the surrounding citys’ lights is always so fascinating to little ones.
Build on their excitement by gifting them with their own light bracelets or necklaces.
11. Bubble-Goo bubble blower
Insert any off trinket of your choice here. Though I typically don’t like trinkets laying around the house, they’re a perfect match for fighting road trip boredom !
12. Themed crayons and a marching snack-bag treat
How cute are these themed Ziplock baggies?
Check out every square inch of your local dollar store to find these and other clever dollar store items that are perfect for kids!
13. Sporty water bottle and water flavoring
Our kids get a kick out of adding their own flavoring to plain-ol’ water.
For added fun, they love to switch flavors and add more than one flavor to their water bottles to make their own flavor varieties.
Though this is a great addition to your road trip goodie bags, be sure to gift the water bottle when a restroom break is up and coming.
14. Balloons to blow-up and bop around
Another great pit-stop activity! Watch for small pieces around little ones, however, as balloons are known to be a choking hazard.
15. Squish-able bubble wrap and collector cards
A genius, but noisy way to beat road trip boredom!
Who doesn’t love popping bubble wrap? Especially when given your own small supply that is just enough to get under Mom and Dad’s nerves?
Pair this activity with a quieter option, like collector cards such as Pokemon’ or sports cards.
16. Color activity book and a calculator for pushing buttons and computing fun
Kids love pushing calculator buttons, especially when it’s not because they’re doing homework.
Dollar store calculators and coloring books are an inexpensive way to keep kids happy while on the road.
17. Putty, slime, or anything gooey!
You may cringe at the thought of a potential mess, but your kids will indeed have loads of fun with a hand-sized amount of putty of slime to keep them occupied.
Find a unique fluffy slime recipe here!
18. A destination-appropriate travel cup (Disney!)
Where ya headed? Stir up the excitement for your ending point by adding in some toys and trinkets that pertain to your destination.
Disney paraphanelia for a Disney vacation, hiking supplies for a National Park vacation, or sand toys for a beach vacation. Your options are endless!
There ya have it!
Easy peasy road trip goodie bags and surprise treats that can be customized per child!
Trust me, they will keep the kids entertained for hours!
What road trip activity is your favorite way to help pass time? Thanks for responding! Jen

The Best Travel Bags for Your Edible Souvenirs
By Michelle Tchea
All products are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something, we may earn an affiliate commission.
I’ve traveled abroad a lot, and as a result, I’ve decided I don’t believe in souvenirs that aren’t edible. I want my loved ones to actually like the souvenirs I bring back, and I’ve found that fish paste in a tube, sticky rice cakes wrapped in seaweed, and licorice cookies get a much more enthusiastic response than an Eiffel Tower key chain ever would. And buying food for friends means I get to poke around grocery stores abroad, lusting after all of the local cheeses and marveling at the way the cereal packaging manages to be so much cuter.
But as much as I love surprising someone with tinned sardines from Portugal and pineapple cakes from Taiwan, these types of souvenirs can be tricky to pack and transport back home safely. Since I already know I have a serious supermarket shopping habit, I’ve started traveling with a second suitcase exclusively for bringing home edible gifts.
Even if you’re not ready for that whole checked-bag level of commitment to the food souvenir, choosing a carry-on that’s well designed for packing a few food souvenirs will mean your friends can experience that life-changing cookie you ate, even if they didn’t get the vacation that went along with it. Now that I’ve built almost a 20-year reputation for bringing back delicious snacks, I’m comfortable saying that I have mastered the art of packing food souvenirs—with no squashed panettone and zero broken bottles to date. Here are my favorite travel bags for carrying edible gifts home.
What to look for in a travel bag
The best travel bags for food souvenirs don’t have to be expensive or specialized—though this list does include some luxe options for carrying your hyper-regional Lay’s potato chips in style. Look for bags that are lightweight, durable, and comfortable to carry once you’ve stuffed them with Korean tteok, Swiss pralines, and Argentinian alfajores .
It’s also a good idea to choose a material that’s easy to clean because spills, broken containers, and other mishaps are more likely to happen with edible souvenirs than with, say, a plush toy koala or plastic magnet.
Finally, the ideal travel bag for snacks features lots of sections and compartments; that way you can tuck little jars into safe spaces where they won’t clank against each other. You might consider investing in a set of packing cubes, as well, for even more potential spill containment and insulation.
OlarHike Packing Cubes (Set of 8)
REI Co-op Expandable Packing Cube Set
A Multipurpose Adventurer’s Bag
FjallRaven High Coast Duffle 36
You might think this bag is for outdoorsy types—the kind of person whose ideal vacation involves long hikes through desert dunes rather than traversing cities to find niche Haribo flavors. But it’s actually perfect for food souvenirs. The duffle bag has a spacious main compartment that’s great for fitting in large food items you don’t want to crush, like meter-long seaweed snacks. It’s also convertible so you can wear it as a backpack or remove the straps entirely.
A Timeless Expandable Tote
Longchamp 21-Inch Expandable Travel Bag
Longchamp Le Pliage Original Weekender
Bloomingdales
My mom and her sisters have carried Longchamp since the ’90s, and I still turn to this iconic French brand for all my food souvenir shopping escapades. Longchamp’s bags are incredibly light and can fold up to fit into the palm of your hand when they’re not in use, making them an optimal extra bag to tuck into your suitcase for filling with gifts for the trip home. The versatile and expandable Le Pliage is my current favorite. It’s roomy, and the recycled polyamide material is a breeze to clean with a wet towel if something like a bottle of shampoo (or a local jam) bursts in the bag. When you go overboard shopping for food souvenirs, it expands into a larger tote—nifty for packing extra packets of German lebkuchen.
And a Slightly Larger Version
For bigger trips abroad and visits to countries known for cute pasta shapes and hard-to-find ancient rice varieties, I recommend Longchamp’s Le Pliage Energy Weekender Bag . It’s lightweight for its size with a more structured base that helps me organize my souvenirs efficiently.
More Than Just a Gym Bag
Kipling Argus Small Duffle Bag
I’ve always been a fan of Kipling bags because the water-resistant nylon material is lightweight. The dual handle makes the bag easy to carry, and it also features a shoulder strap. Most important, though, this bag has an additional shoe compartment because it is meant for the gym—but why pack an extra pair of shoes when you can use the extra space for a box of wagashi from Tokyo?
A Cheers-Worthy Wine Keeper
FlyWithWine Universal Travel Wine Suitcase
When I’m traveling to a wine-producing region and know I’ll want to bring home a few bottles, I wrap that Bordeaux or Torrontés in clothes and nestle it into my hard-shell luggage. However, if you are a wine collector and want a TSA-approved wine suitcase, this is one of the most affordable options on the market. It can fit a full case of wine and is lined with high-density foam to stop bottles from moving around. This lightweight suitcase is perfect for trips to California or Pacific Northwest wine regions because it fits the American standard wine bottle perfectly. A full case of Champagne bottles might be a tight squeeze, though, which is a good excuse to bring some friends along on your next trip.

The Best Hardside Luggage for Traveling in 2024
A hardshell suitcase keeps your stuff safe and un-squished.
We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.
Our top picks
- Best overall: Freeform Hardside Expandable, Samsonite
- Best value: 28-inch Hardside Spinner, Amazon Basics
- Best carry-on: The Carry-On, Away
- Best minimalistic: Carry-On, Monos
Hardside or hardshell luggage is made of plastic or metal materials that hold their shape to encase and protect your belongings. At the Good Housekeeping Institute , we evaluate hardside luggage in the Textiles Lab, analyzing them for factors like durability, water resistance and ease of use. Plus, we share them with consumer testers who take them on their own trips and share real-world feedback. We've put together a list of picks including lightweight and durable options and hard cases with unique features that we think are worth your buying.
Samsonite Freeform Hardside Expandable
Samsonite's high-quality luggage has continued to perform well in our tests over the years , specifically in terms of durability and ease of use. The brand's Freeform hardside suitcase is a favorite of our consumer testers who agree that its wheels roll smoothly and that the bag is easy to maneuver around twists and turns. It also received perfect scores in Lab tests for being a breeze to open and close.
Inside, you'll find a zippered panel and an adjustable cross strap to keep your belongings in place, and we fit our entire packing load in the bag with room to spare. Our consumer testers did point out that the carrying handles are on the smaller side, but they still thought the bag was easy to pick up. There are three different sizes to choose from, or you can buy a set including a carry-on and a checked bag.
Amazon Basics 28-Inch Hardside Spinner
With more than 35,000 five-star reviews and a 4.5-star average rating, Amazon Basics' hardside luggage is a favorite of real users and GH analysts alike. When we tested this bag in our Lab, we found it to be spacious, and it received perfect scores for easy packing. Online reviewers agree, adding that they can fill the suitcase with more than enough clothing and essentials for their trips.
The suitcase is made with ABS plastic, which isn't as durable as some other hard materials, but it is lightweight and keeps the price low. Testers appreciated the luggage's wheel performance, sharing that the bag is easy to maneuver, but they found the telescopic handle to be flimsier than other models they tried. This suitcase comes in three different sizes and is available in two and three-piece sets for an even better value.
Away The Carry-On
Several of our Lab experts have been using Away luggage for years and have found them to stand the test of time. T his pick is made of polycarbonate material, which means it's lightweight yet durable. In our testing, we dropped it repeatedly from a 3-foot height, and there were no major signs of damage.
Our consumer testers thought the wheels on Away suitcases rolled smoothly and found they were easy to maneuver, but the handle isn't as sturdy as some other styles. In our packing tests, we were impressed by the compressive panels meant to keep your belongings in place and by the hidden laundry bag you can use to separate your dirty clothes. If you purchase the suitcase and decide it isn't right for you, the brand offers a 100-day return policy for unused items.
Calpak Ambeur Three-Piece Luggage Set
For luggage that's equally fashionable and functional, Calpak's Ambeur suitcases are a great option. The hardshell bags are made with a blend of ABS plastic and polycarbonate that's both lightweight and durable, but we did find the metallic colors scuffed easily. In Lab evaluations, the luggage was dubbed our "tester favorite" because consumer testers were so wowed by the design and ease of use.
The telescopic handles aced our tests, with one tester sharing that it was the "smoothest handle by far" out of all of the bags available for testing. Other testers agreed, explaining that the padded handles were comfortable to lift, pull and push. Plus, the Ambeur luggage aced our packing tests. If you don't need a set of three bags, you can opt for a two-piece set or choose from any of the five styles available.
Travelpro Maxlite Air Hardside Expandable Luggage
Travelpro designs luggage for frequent travelers and primarily offers soft fabric luggage, but the brand does have a few hardside pieces including the Maxlite Spinner. This bag has a roomy luggage compartment with two zippered panels, and it can be expanded by 2 inches, lending you extra room for all of your souvenirs on the trip home.
In our Lab tests, Travelpro bags were easy to fill with a full load of clothing and travel gear like toiletries and shoes. They also performed well and earned high durability ratings. Testers loved the cushioned telescopic handles which lock at two different heights. We did find the carrying handles to be on the tighter side, which can make the bag difficult to lift into an overhead bin.
Heys Fashion Spinner 30"
For a fun suitcase that's easy to spot on an airport luggage carousel , try one of Heys' Fashion Spinners. Choose from cute character designs, trendy animal prints, watercolor scenes and bold graphic patterns.
The brand's suitcases are made of a polycarbonate and ABS plastic composite — primarily ABS with a polycarbonate coating for protection. They weren't the most durable in our evaluations and showed some scratches in our tests, but they earned high scores for ease of use. The bag's interior is filled with organizational pockets and compression panels to easily pack all of your belongings. One GH analyst who has owned a Fashion Spinner set for over a decade said the long-lasting bags were spacious and could fit everything needed for a trip, even before using the zippered expansion system.
Rimowa Cabin S Carry-On
Rimowa only makes hardside luggage, and it's a cutting-edge brand that continues to impress our Textiles Lab experts . The Original line is made with aluminum, which is more durable than other hard materials like ABS plastic and polycarbonate. This style of suitcase features the brand's iconic grooved design and has a zipperless closure, opting for locking latches instead — TSA-approved, of course.
When you open the suitcase, you'll find two spacious packing compartments and two adjustable compression panels to keep your belongings in place. Rimowa's suitcases are much more expensive than other brands, but they are among the best in our tests with high ratings for packing space, durability and maneuverability.
Briggs & Riley Global 21" Carry-On Expandable Spinner
This innovative suitcase from Briggs & Riley is full of features to make packing for an international trip easier. On the outside of the hardside suitcase is an easy-access pocket for your phone and ID. The bag unzips into one large packing space that's fully lined and contains three zip pockets for easy organization. Plus, the bag utilizes Briggs & Riley's unique expansion system, which allows you to expand the bag for additional packing space and then compress it to its standard size once the bag has been filled — with just the push of a button. Our testers recently tried a softside bag from the brand with the same system and were blown away by how much they could fit inside, sharing that there was way more room than expected.
When we tested Briggs & Riley's hardside suitcases in the Textiles Lab, they performed well, receiving high scores for durability, water resistance and ease of use. Testers also shared that the brand's bags were easy to maneuver through our obstacle course and said the telescopic handles were sturdy. Although we didn't experience this issue, some online reviewers have shared that the zipper pulls are prone to breaking with regular use.
Monos Carry-On
Monos' less-is-more approach to design results in a sleek, timeless look that our testers love. The durable polycarbonate luggage may have a simple appearance but doesn't skimp on quality or useful packing features. Inside, you'll find two spacious compartments: one zipper-enclosed compartment and one with an adjustable compression panel. There are also additional zipper pockets inside for even more organized storage space.
The large checked version of this bag was a GH 2023 Family Travel Awards recipient. It aced our durability tests, resisting major dents and damages after being dropped repeatedly from a 3-foot height, but it did show some signs of wear in our scratch tests. When testers tried it in our luggage obstacle course, they were impressed by how easy the bag was to maneuver and how smoothly the spinner wheels rolled around twists and turns. The brand offers sets for an even better value and a generous 100-day return policy.
How we test luggage
At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we test luggage using specialized equipment in our Textiles Lab and with consumer testers . When we review luggage, we consider these factors:
✔️ Size and weight: In the Lab, we measure the size and weight of each suitcase to ensure that all online size claims are accurate. We place carry-on bags in a 22" x 14" x 9" area to see if they meet TSA size requirements.
✔️ Extra features: We make note of any additional features or components that make the luggage stand out, like carrying handles, built-in locks and telescopic handles that adjust to different heights.
✔️ Ease of use: We rate how easy it is to zip and unzip each piece of luggage (pictured here) and consider the accessibility of any packing compartments. We also consider features like telescopic handles and wheels.
After packing each bag, we roll it over different surfaces including tile, carpet and hardwood and test the carrying handles by lifting the bag onto a countertop.
✔️ Packing: We fill each bag with a standard packing load for a two-night trip including clothing, accessories and toiletries (picture here) and then score the suitcases based on how much they're able to hold.
✔️ Drop testing: Each piece of luggage is filled with a standard weight and dropped from a 3-foot height from different angles to mimic real use (pictured here). We then analyze the luggage for signs of damage like dents or cracks.
✔️ Consumer testing: Consumer testers take part in our obstacle course that involves rolling the bags over different surfaces like carpet, tile and wood flooring (pictured here), lifting the bags, maneuvering the bags around cones and more. They also share their thoughts on properties like ease of use, sturdiness of the handles and wheel performance.
We share suitcases with testers who are able to take the bags on their own trips and provide us with real-world feedback about their experiences.
What to look for when shopping for the best hardside luggage
When shopping for a hardside suitcase, here are a few things to keep in mind:
✔️ Material: Not all hardside suitcases are made from the same hard material, and the material can impact performance, weight and price. These are the most common:
- Aluminum is the most durable material for hardside luggage, but it's much heavier than other options and can be pretty expensive.
- Polycarbonate is the most popular material for hard luggage. It is both lightweight and durable, but it can scratch easily.
- ABS is a plastic material that is more affordable and even more lightweight than polycarbonate, but it is a bit less durable.
- Polypropylene is another type of plastic that is even lighter than and slightly stronger than ABS plastic. It's fairly durable and affordable, as well.
- A composite or mixture of polycarbonate, ABS and/or polypropylene combines aspects of each material. Most composite suitcases are made with an ABS base coated in polycarbonate material. This adds extra durability, but it still isn't quite as durable as a suitcase made of 100% polycarbonate.
✔️ Wheels: Wheels with 360° spin receive the best maneuverability scores in our Lab tests and with consumer testers. These wheels allow the luggage to rotate fully and move side to side in addition to moving straight ahead.
✔️ Handles: There are two types of handles you should consider: telescopic handles and carrying handles. Telescopic handles extend from the suitcase so you can push and pull the bag around. Check to see if the handle is easy to open and close, whether or not it can be adjusted and if it's padded for comfort. If you're going to be lifting and lowering your bag often, make sure the side and top carrying handles are large enough for you to easily grip them.
✔️ Compartments: Internal compartments aren't necessary, but they can be helpful when it comes to packing and securing your belongings. Interior pockets are often made with mesh panels to allow your belongings to breathe and to help you see what's inside. There are zip pockets to hold extra belongings and zip panels to keep clothing separated inside the suitcase – so you can keep your running shoes away from your nice dress. Some hardside suitcases also come with removable compartments like a laundry bag to contain dirty clothes or a garment bag to hang clothing.
✔️ Returns and warranties: Luggage warranties tend to only cover manufacturer defects, which can often be difficult to prove. If you're worried about spending money on luggage you won't love, opt for a brand that offers a trial period or generous return policy so that you can test the bag before committing, especially if you're shopping online without seeing it in person first.
