Tour Introduction

This is a wonderfully varied and scenic tour of Malta – a tiny island with a warm welcome and proud military and cultural heritage. The Second World War siege will be our main focus, but we also examine the indelible marks that other cultures and events have left behind: the unspoilt ancient walled city of Mdina, the renaissance architecture of the Knights of St John, the brief occupation by Napoleon and the extant Victorian fortifications. We will enjoy coastal drives, a harbour tour, a break on the island of Gozo, visit superb palaces and fortresses, see underground shelters and secret command posts, and many other places of interest on this wonderful and friendly Mediterranean island. Throughout we will be based in historic Valetta with its heritage sites and excellent restaurants – a wonderful holiday for military, cultural and culinary enthusiasts alike.

Malta has stood at the strategic crossroads of the Mediterranean for centuries, its history shaped by successive incomers: ancient Phoenicians, Romans and Arabians, the Knights of St John, Napoleon and the British. It was the scene of two of the most cataclysmic sieges in military history: the Great Siege of 1565 when the Knights of St John held out against vastly superior Ottoman forces; and the Second World War siege of 1940-43 when British and Maltese forces and civilians together held out against the might of Hitler and Mussolini, making a significant contribution to the success of the land campaign in North Africa, naval operations in the Mediterranean and, indeed, the outcome of the Second World War itself. There are striking similarities between the two sieges; the spirit of The Knights’ earlier struggle inspired their 20th Century successors to fight on against seemingly impossible odds.

  • Based throughout in the centre of historic Valetta
  • Discover the Great Siege of 1565
  • Fabulous Military, Gothic and Baroque architecture

Day 1: Fly to Malta. Arrive at Luqa airport, the former RAF Bomber Command airfield, and check-in to our Valetta hotel and base throughout the tour. After introductions and welcome drinks, walk to nearby Upper Barrakka Gardens to enjoy sunset over the Grand Harbour before dinner. (D)

Day 2: The Great Siege 1565. A pleasant walk along the harbour front to the northern end of Valetta peninsula with views over the Mediterranean. Enjoy the entertaining audio-visual ‘Malta Experience’, which portrays the island’s 7000 years of history, and time to explore the National War Museum. Discuss the epic defence of Valetta by the Knights of St John in 1565 at St Elmo’s Fort and visit the ‘Sacra Infermeria’, the original Hospital of the Order of St John, where patients famously dined on silver plates. (B,D)

Day 3: The Development of Valetta 1565-1800. Another day on foot wandering through Valetta’s golden streets to trace the development of the city’s fortifications & architecture during the rule of the Knights of St John after the Great Siege. Visit the Grand Master’s Palace, the traditional and current seat of Maltese government, where its rich tapestries record the country’s turbulent past, and its Armoury which houses one of the best collections of medieval weaponry in Europe. After lunch in the fashionable Grand Square, visit the Grand Master’s magnificent Cathedral which includes a wealth of art including works by Caravaggio, Rubens, and Poussin. Explore the Knights ‘auberges’ and city walls to discuss the genius of Valetta’s impregnable defences and see how the British subsequently adapted them for more modern uses. End the day at the Casa Rocca Piccola, home to a modern Knight of St John, the Marquis de Piro and his wife, for an intimate guided tour of their beautiful 16C Palace. (B,D)

Day 4: British Colonial Period 1800-1942. Drive along the scenic east coast stopping at the former Pembroke Army Garrison; eponymous St Paul’s Bay, where the saint was shipwrecked, and the scene of many historic events since; and Wignacourt, or St Paul’s Bay, Tower, the oldest surviving coastal defence post in Malta. Follow the impressive 19th century defensive Victoria Lines to Fort Rinella with its impressive 100-ton gun and watch demonstrations of Victorian soldiering. Dinner at your own expense this evening. (B)

Day 5: Gozo. Visit the Knights’ lookout at the Red Tower high up on Marfa Ridge with its splendid views. Ferry to Gozo and thence to the hilltop city of Ir-Rabat, or Victoria, to explore its fortified citadel, walk its dominating walls and visit the lavish Baroque cathedral. There will be some free time for personal exploration before returning to Valetta. (B,D)

Day 6: Second World War: The Maritime & Home Fronts. Experience a relaxing boat trip around Valetta’s magnificent harbours to see the site of the submarine base, discuss the Italian navy raid, the fight to save aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious and the heroic Santa Maria Convoy. Disembark at Birgu wharf for lunch break in the old town square, followed by a visit to the strategically located Fort St Angelo (the Knights’ first, and the Royal Navy’s last, HQ in Malta) for spectacular panoramic views across Grand Harbour. The day ends at the Second World War Museum with its underground tunnels recounting the dramatic story of the civilian population under siege. Ferry back to Valetta. (B,D)

Day 7: Second World War: Land & Air Fronts. Coach tour of central Malta with stop-offs to view evocative evidence of Land defences, barracks and hospitals ending for a lunch break at the fascinating Mdina, the magnificent ancient capital of Malta. Drive to Ta’qali, the epicentre of the Air Battle and “the most bombed airfield of the 2WW” and home to the excellent Malta Aviation Museum. Thence a drive along the dramatic Dingli cliffs to discuss their contribution. (B,D)

Day 8: Second World War: Command & Control. Visit the Lascaris War Rooms, restored to give a fascinating glimpse of how the command bunker operated during Battle for Malta and as the operational HQ for the Invasion of Italy. The firing of the Noon Day Gun is the signal to take an early lunch, check-out and drive to the airport for return flights to London. (B)

Explore historical sites in Malta and learn about its incredible history that stretches back 7,000 years. From the Phoenicians to the Romans to the Arabs to the Knights of St. John, every era has left its mark on Malta’s landscape and culture. It’s amazing how much history you can uncover in Maltese towns and ancient sites. I’ll give you a list of must-see sites and key highlights of what to expect while you’re there.

Table of Contents

Brief Timeline To Malta’s History

  • Malta’s First Inhabitants : Malta’s first inhabitants arrived around 5900 BC. People from the Neolithic era lived in caves and open dwellings as farmers and fishermen.
  • The Temple Era:  In this era, which began around 3600 BC, impressive structures were built, such as the Ggantija Temples in Gozo and Hagar Qim Temples in Malta. These temples may have been dedicated to gods, with statues of obese figures symbolizing fertility, the “fat ladies.” The civilization thrived for 1,500 years before disappearing mysteriously, possibly due to drought and climate conditions.
  • Romans : In 218 BC the Romans took control of the Maltese Islands. In the Roman era, Maleth (also called Melite) became the administrative centre and expanded greatly, encompassing Mdina and Rabat today. There were defensive walls, a protective ditch, temples on top, and well-preserved mosaics in the Domvs Romana . The islands flourished under Roman rule, incorporating Latin as the official language and religion. Malta remained part of the Roman Empire until the 6th century.

Arabs:  The Arabs invaded Malta in 870 AD and left an enduring impact. Their influence can be seen in Maltese culture, language , agriculture, and even cooking. Many place names in Malta come from this period.

Normans:  The Norman conquest of Malta in 1091 brought the island back under Christian rule. While the islands were mostly Muslim for several centuries, they gradually became Romanised and Latinised under Norman and Sicilian rule. By the 15th century, all Maltese Muslims converted to Christianity.

Knights of St. John:  From 1530 to 1798, Malta was ruled by the Knights of St. John. During their reign, they made Italian the official language, built towns, palaces, churches, gardens, and fortifications and contributed to the island’s cultural heritage. They stood up to the Ottoman Empire during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. After the siege, they built Valletta with impressive fortifications.

French Occupation:  Napoleon Bonaparte came to Malta during his Egyptian campaign in 1798 and ended the Knights of Malta’s reign. He abolished feudal privileges and rights, ended slavery, and set up public education during his short stay. In 1800, the French lost popularity with the Maltese, leading to a rebellion and a British blockade.

British Rule:  The British Empire ruled Malta for 150 years. English was introduced as an official language alongside Maltese, and subsequent reforms included trial by jury and a governing council. As a military and naval fortress, Malta housed the British Mediterranean fleet and played a significant role during both World Wars.

Independence:  In 1964, Malta became independent and in 1974, a republic within the British Commonwealth.

Why Visit Historical Sites in Malta?

Malta’s historical sites will enhance your understanding of the past and also help you appreciate the present more deeply. You’ll learn about the cultural, social, and religious influences that shaped the Maltese way of life. In addition, you’ll learn about the architectural marvels that remain standing today.

Furthermore, visiting Malta’s historical sites is a fantastic way to support local communities, as tourism plays a vital role in preserving and restoring these iconic landmarks.

Top Historical Sites in Malta

Malta’s megalithic temples.

Malta’s Megalithic Temples, dating back to 3600-2500 BCE, consist of seven remarkable prehistoric structures. They are considered among the oldest freestanding monuments in the world. They predate even Egypt’s pyramids.

I’ve listed the must-see temples below. My blog post about UNESCO sites in Malta has more information, as well as a list of temples not listed here.

Ggantija Temples :  Ggantija Temples are the oldest freestanding structures in the world, located on Gozo Island. These temples are collections of limestone blocks and roofed chambers. They reveal a civilization that flourished more than 5,000 years ago.

Tarxien Temples :  These temples consist of three interconnected temple structures dating back to 3150 BCE. The Tarxien Temples are famous for their intricate stonework, with reliefs depicting domestic animals, altars, and decorative patterns. An impressive carving depicting a bull and sow demonstrates temple builders’ exceptional craftsmanship.

Hagar Qim Temples :  These temples are perched on a hilltop with spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and Filfla, an uninhabited island. A decorated pillar altar and table altar were found at Hagar Qim, dating back to 3600-3200 BCE. Notably, ‘fat lady’ figurines were also found there.

Historical Sites in Malta - Hagar Qim Temples

Mnajdra Temples : This temple complex was built around 4000 BCE next to Hagar Qim. There are three temples: the upper, middle, and lower temples. The strategic orientation of the temples allows sunlight to illuminate specific areas during equinoxes and solstices, suggesting they could be used as astronomical observatories.

Hal Saflieni Hypogeum

The Hal Saflieni Hypogeum is an underground complex near Paola. It started as a cave but got enlarged through rock cutting. Pottery fragments and human remains indicate its use from 4000 BC until 2500 BC.

The Hypogeum walls bear witness to ancient life scenes, with sculptures and paintings depicting hunting scenes and religious symbols. It’s a burial site, with many tombs and chambers. But one of its most fascinating parts is how it sounds. In some parts of the Hypogeum, there’s amazing acoustic resonance.

Due to its underground location, the Hypogeum is well preserved. Guided tours are available all year, but you need to book 2-3 months in advance because there’s only a limited number of people allowed.

Top Historical Sites in Malta: Ancient Towns

Mdina, malta’s silent city.

Mdina is known as the “Silent City” because of its serene, timeless atmosphere, which takes you back to the medieval era. Mdina’s rich history dates back 4,000 years. This ancient city was founded by the Phoenicians and has seen many civilisations rise and fall, including the Romans, Arabs, Normans, and Knights of St. John.

In Mdina, you can discover well-preserved medieval architecture and narrow, winding streets. The bastions and fortifications surrounding Mdina reveal its strategic importance throughout history. You also get panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Mdina’s St. Paul’s Cathedral is a magnificent Baroque masterpiece. Inside the cathedral, you’ll find marble work, frescoes, and a magnificent dome.

Palazzo Falson Historic House Museum is another must-see attraction. Step inside and see its rooms filled with antique furniture, artwork, and historical artefacts.

Historical Sites in Malta - Mdina Street

Valletta, UNESCO World Heritage Site

Valletta , Malta’s capital city, has a lot to love. With a uniform grid plan and fortified walls, Valletta was built as a cohesive work of the late Renaissance by the Knights of St John in 1566. Due to its well-preserved historical buildings and monuments, it’s often called an “open-air museum.”

There’s a fantastic Baroque cathedral in Valletta called St. John’s Co-Cathedral known for its ornate interior and stunning art. It’s home to Caravaggio’s famous painting “The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist.”

The Upper Barrakka Gardens , built in the 16th century, offer panoramic views of the Three Cities and the Grand Harbour. They also have the Saluting Battery , where cannons are fired to signal the city gate opening and closing.

Top Historical Sites in Malta Showing the Knights of St. John’s Legacy

Get to know the Knights of St. John, warrior monks from medieval times who played a big role in Malta’s history. They were founded in the 11th century and cared for pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land. But they didn’t stop there – they became a mighty military force. They ruled Malta from 1530 to 1798, making it a stronghold for Christians fighting the Ottoman Empire. Malta’s landscape, culture, and identity have been shaped by their influence.

If you visit the historical sites in Malta connected to the Knights, you’ll be captivated by stories about bravery, secrets, and luxury. If you’re here in Valletta, you should check out the Grandmaster’s Palace , where the order’s top leader lived. Don’t forget about Birgu’s magnificent Fort St. Angelo , which played a huge role in the Great Siege of 1565. There’s also the Inquisitor’s Palace in Birgu, where you can learn about the Knights’ political and religious power.

WWII-Related Historical Sites in Malta

From the 19th century, Malta served as Great Britain’s naval base due to its strategic location. The British have relied heavily on Malta since the Suez Canal opened in 1869 to defend it. In addition to modernizing Malta’s fortifications, the British expanded dockyards and upgraded Grand Harbour ship repair facilities. Royal Navy ships operating in the Mediterranean and crossing the Suez Canal relied on Malta for coaling and supply.

With its strategic location between Sicily and North Africa, Malta was an excellent place to disrupt Italian supplies in World War II. The Nazis threatened to invade Malta but instead launched a bombing operation. As a result, Malta was the most bombed place during World War II.

During Operation Husky, Malta served as a command centre for the invasion of Sicily and the subsequent push into Italy. The Italian navy surrendered on 8th September 1943, and Malta’s historians are proud to claim a leading role in Europe’s liberation.

Some military facilities from World War II have been converted for public use. Below are some you can visit.

Lascaris War Rooms

These rooms are located under Valletta in tunnels and chambers carved in limestone. During WWII, the Lascaris War Rooms served as Maltese military headquarters. They even served as a command centre during Sicily’s invasion by Allied forces. Lascaris Rooms were built by the Knights of St John but expanded into underground headquarters by the British.

There are many different rooms you can visit, including a navy plotting, anti-aircraft guns operations, coast defence, filter room and others.

War HQ Tunnels

There’s another underground complex near Lascaris War Rooms. These tunnels were used as headquarters at the start of the war in 1940.

Later, they were used by the Royal Navy’s Mediterranean Fleet in 1956. They played a big part in the Suez Crisis. NATO took over the facility in 1967 and used it as its Naval Headquarters in Malta. It also served as a strategic communications centre to track Soviet submarines in the Mediterranean.

During the NATO era, the tunnels were expanded with even deeper chambers, but these weren’t finished. The complex was eventually abandoned when NATO’s central Mediterranean headquarters shifted from Malta to Italy.

You can get a guided tour and visit War HQ Tunnels rooms. Access them from the Saluting Battery .

Malta at War Museum Shelters

During World War II, the Maltese islands were covered with underground air raid shelters to protect people from bombs.

Some of these shelters have been carefully preserved and are now open to the public. There’s one notable shelter at Malta at Wat Museum in Birgu. You can explore the shelter’s tunnel network approximately 9 meters below the surface.

Malta Aviation Museum

It’s worth checking out the Malta Aviation Museum , located in Ta’Qali. This museum is located inside three authentic hangars used during World War II. It’s an excellent place to learn about WWII and postwar aviation history.

In the Air Battle of Malta Memorial Hangar, you’ll find meticulously restored WWII aircraft. In the main exhibition hangar, you will find post-war piston and jet aircraft, helicopters, engine collections, and ground equipment. Romney Exhibition Hangar has scale displays, uniforms, and memorabilia.

Besides that, there’s a restoration workshop where planes await restoration, so you can see the meticulous process of preserving aviation history.

I’m glad you stopped by this article and I hope you got intrigued by the incredible history of Malta. Each historical site offers a fascinating look at the civilization, culture, and events that have shaped this island. There’s a lot to learn about Malta’s history, from ancient temples to medieval cities, the Knights of St. John to war scars.

Ġgantija Temples

At more than 5,000 years old , the Ġg antija temples on Gozo are the oldest temples in the Maltese I slands, predating the pyramids of Egypt during the old kingdom and Stonehenge. These remarkably well-preserved temples are located in the outskirts of the beautiful village of Xagħra and consist of two temples dating back between 3,600 and 3,200 years BC. The Ġg antija temples are a UNESCO world Heritage Site.

important evidence of ancient cultures which once inhabited Malta. The temples site, now surrounded by urbanisation, was discovered by a farmer in 1915. In one of the temples a huge statue of a reclining woman was found (the original is now housed in the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta) which is one of the world’s earliest known representation of a deity.  The statue is considered to be that of a fertility goddess. There are four linked temples with massive stone blocks up to 3 metres by 1 metre by 1 metre in size.

Hagar Qim Temples

UNESCO world heritage listed Haġar Qim is a marvel of ancient history and engineering located along the strikingly stark landscape of the south-east coastline. Built on a high hill overlooking the blue Mediterranean and the islet of Fifla, Hagar Qim and its sister temple Mnajdra (500m down the hill and closer to the sea), have the most spectacular location of any temples on the islands. They were constructed during what is known as the Ggantija temple phase, which include not only the oldest temples in Malta, but also the oldest free standing, man-made, structures in the world.  The temples hold mysteries that are 5,500 years old.

St. John's Co-Cathedral

St . John’s Co-Cathedral is unparalleled in its historic significance to Malta. Apart from its place among the most magnificent baroque churches in the world, St . John’s Co-Cathedral is also an architectural metaphor for the Order of the Knights of St . John, who built it between 1573 and 1578. The simple façade reflects the Knights’ military pragmatism, while the gilded vaults, painted ceilings, marble floors and general baroque exuberance of its lavish interior, reveal the sophistication, power and wealth of the Order.  It was raised to a status equal to that of St Paul’s Cathedral in Mdina , the official seat of the Archbishop of Malta , by a papal decree of 1816, hence the term ‘co-cathedral’.

Hal Saflieni Hypogeum

The Hypogeum is Malta’s unique underground temple complex, discovered by chance in 1902 when builders were preparing a building site in Paola. Covering some 500 sq metres it comprises a labyrinth of halls, corridors and chambers on three levels cut from the limestone around 4,000 to 5,000 years ago. This was a place of both ancient worship and burial and at the lowest level of the complex a chamber was found containing the remains of around 7,000 bodies. One chamber, known as the Oracle Chamber, allows a strange phenomenon – it will magnify male voices around the complex but not female voices.

St. Paul's Cathedral

St. Paul’s Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the city of Mdina. It is built on the site where governor Publius was reported to have met Saint Paul following his shipwreck off the Maltese coast. The old church was modified and enlarged several times. The building we can see today was designed by the architect Lorenzo Gafa and it was built between 1697 and 1702 to replace a ruined Norman cathedral destroyed in 1693.

Grand Master's Palace

Dominating Palace Square, the Grandmaster’s Palace was one of the first buildings to be built in Valletta in 1571. The original Palazzo was designed by Gelormu Cassar but successive Grandmasters enlarged and developed the building as they deemed fit to use it as their official residence.

Għar Dalam means ‘ c ave of darkness’ in Maltese. The cave is 145-metre cavity of which the first 50 metres publicly accessible. The animal bones found within are evident proof that Malta was once linked to Sicily and to mainland Europe by a land bridge.  A huge number and variety of paleontological treasures have been unearthed from Għar Dalam, including the remains of dwarf elephants and hippopotami. These animals were trapped in Malta during the ice age when the sea-level rose to isolate the country from Sicily. The marooned animals subsequently evolved to smaller size in order to adapt themselves to a more limited food-supply. The cave has also surrendered the remains of bears, wolves, micro-mammals and giant flightless swans.

St. Paul's Catacombs in Rabat

St Paul’s catacombs are a must-see for any ancient history enthusiast. They take their name from their proximity to St. Paul’s church and grotto in Rabat, where the apostle is believed to have preached during his sojourn in Malta. This underground labyrinth sepulchre with hundreds of tombs dates from the 3rd century and make up one of the earliest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta. It is one of the largest hypogea that covers an area of over 2,000 square metres having a large hall divided into two chambers.

The Roman Villa

If you are one of those who are fascinated by everything and anything from the Roman Empire, the Roman Villa or Domvs Romana will intrigue you. It offers a glimpse into the life of an aristocratic Roman family. It is located in Rabat directly outside the Mdina Ditch. Undoubtedly the most valuable and interesting things to see in the villa are the authentic and well preserved Roman Mosaics.

Fascinating Historical Places to Visit on a Memorable Trip to Malta

Unravel the rich history of Malta by visiting the Cathedral of the Assumption, in the Citadel on Gozo

If you consider yourself a history aficionado, Malta is the place to go. From biblical sagas and ancient origins to medieval legends and modern-day warfare, Malta traces a distinct arc on the chronicles of humankind.

The unique nature of Maltese history relates to the fact that very few countries have been so present on the world stage at every juncture. Today, the country is an accessible storybook of times past, when art and culture thrived, religion endured and war was waged. Here are our recommendations on where to experience the fascinating history of Malta.

St Paul’s Church and Grotto, Rabat

The Bible recounts St Paul’s shipwreck on Malta with a group of missionaries in 60CE. For three months, he preached the word of God from a grotto in Rabat, now considered to be the Cradle of Christianity in Malta. On this spot in the 17th century, St Paul’s Church was built to commemorate his impact on the island. The divine importance of the site has led generations of pilgrims here, including Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. A place where biblical tradition meets empirical history at a real-life location, the grotto is a must-see for any history buff.

Ħal-Saflieni Hypogeum, Paola

A Unesco World Heritage site, the Ħal-Saflieni Hypogeum, in Paola, is a cultural complex that’s a crowning example of the underground networks in Malta. Dating back to c4000BCE, this megalithic structure has a unique microclimate, which has contributed to its preservation over the years. Further supported by national conservation, the necropolis – in which archaeologists have estimated more than 6,000 people have been laid to rest – has maintained its integrity. A mysterious must-see, the Hypogeum offers a peculiar insight into past times and has solidified ancient culture as an exciting foundation of Malta’s national identity.

The Unesco-listed Ħal-Saflieni Hypogeum was discovered in 1992

Lascaris War Rooms, Valletta

If it wasn’t clear yet, let us confirm that Malta has played a part in some of the most significant moments of world history. Another example of Malta’s subterranean secrets, the Lascaris War Rooms were instrumental during World War II for almost every arm of the Allied war machine; it is also the location from which Field Marshal Montgomery and General Eisenhower planned the invasion of Sicily in 1943. The rooms were also used by Nato during tense Cold War disputes. Now open for visits, the rooms have been meticulously modelled on the WWII period and feature original and replica artefacts portraying their long history.

Beneath the Upper Barrakka Gardens is a tunnel complex known as the Lascaris War Rooms

San Anton Gardens, Attard

Following the Great Siege of 1565, the Western Christian powers recognised the strategic importance of Malta and poured incredible wealth into the island. For the next 200 years, it enjoyed a Golden Age characterised by a thriving society, an emerging art scene and impressive architecture. A knight by the name of Antoine de Paule had a country villa built during this period, which was expanded into a palace upon his succession as Grand Master of the Order. The gardens around this palace, namely Il-Palazz ta’ Sant’Anton (San Anton Palace) are a remarkable remnant of this historical wealth.

San Anton Palace Gardens offers a glimpse into the Golden Age that followed the Great Siege of 1565

Mellieha air-raid shelters

Malta has experienced not one, but two tremendous sieges. The second took place during World War II when Malta felt the full might of the Italian and German air forces. From 1940 to 1942, the country suffered more than 3,000 bombing raids, after which King George VI, of the United Kingdom, awarded the entire country the George Cross in recognition of its people’s heroism. With the Maltese people so caught up in the Mediterranean theatre of war, there is no better place to take in the full weight and historical context of their plight than the air-raid shelters in Mellieha.

Citadel, Gozo

Fortified in prehistoric times, the citadel has endured as the centrepiece of Gozo throughout the ages. Today, it houses a rich collection of cultural intrigues that are bound to captivate anyone looking to connect with Maltese history. The imposing architecture is a striking sight. The citadel has been used for different purposes throughout its long history; today you can visit it as a museum of prehistoric, Roman and medieval prominence in the Mediterranean.

Caravaggio’s Beheading of St John the Baptist at Co-Cathedral of St John, Valletta

The ornate St John’s Co-Cathedral, one of the most compelling structures in Valletta, is home to both exquisite baroque interiors and Caravaggio’s painting Beheading of St John the Baptist . At a fascinating point in history, the Knights of St John in Malta provided Caravaggio with amnesty after he fled Rome following his participation in a murder in 1606. Here he painted this masterpiece, where it can be seen as a glorious example of Malta’s prominence in culture during the 17th century.

The regal interior of St Johns Co-Cathedral is reason enough to visit

Fort St Elmo on the Grand Harbour

If you were standing in Fort St Elmo, above the Grand Harbour, on a warm spring evening in 1565, the horizon would be alight with the scene of dizzying threat. So commences the Great Siege of Malta by the Ottoman Empire, with a terrific force of 40,000 soldiers in around 180 ships. Arguably one of the most disputed pieces of land on earth, Malta was at the very edge of crusading Christendom. The Knights of St John held fast in the five-month siege, aided by the brave Maltese. The Grand Harbour is an astonishing sight to enjoy in peacetime, and an enthralling place to imagine the desperate movements of war in the 16th century.

history tours malta

Lucy Davidson

27 sep 2021, @lucejuiceluce.

Though Malta has a population of only half a million, its turbulent past placed it at the historic centre of the succession of struggles for power in the Mediterranean and witness to the changing cultures of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Its fascinating historiography has been shaped by centuries of foreign rule by various powers, including the Phoenicians, Romans, Greeks, Arabs, Normans, Sicilians, Swabians, Aragonese, Hospitallers, French, and British.

As a result, the country is home to a number of fascinating historical sites. Here’s our pick of 10 which you shouldn’t miss when paying a visit.

history tours malta

1. Grandmasters Palace – Valletta

The Grandmasters Palace in Valletta has been the seat of power in Malta since the 16th century. It was in 1571 that the Knights Hospitaller of St John made the Grandmasters Palace their base, a role which it would fulfil until 1798, when this religious and military order left Malta.

Today, as well as being a government building, parts of the Grandmasters Palace are open to the public, particularly the State Rooms and the Armoury. The opulent and lavishly decorated State Rooms display several art collections of which many, such as The Great Siege Frescoes by Matteo Perez d’Aleccio, date back to the times of the Knights Hospitaller. Meanwhile, the Palace Armoury contains the impressive collection of armour and weaponry of the Knights Hospitaller.

2. Ggantija Temples

The Ggantija Temples are a UNESCO-listed megalithic temple complex on the island of Gozo and some of the world’s oldest surviving religious structures.

Comprised of two well preserved stone temples enclosed by a wall, it is unclear as to exactly when the Ggantija Temples were built. UNESCO put their origins between 3,000BC and 2,200BC, although others date it to as early as 3,600BC.

3. Verdala Palace

The eponymous Verdala Palace was built by and named for Grandmaster Hugues Loubenx de Verdalle, the 52nd Grandmaster of the Order of Malta in 1586 in Buskett Gardens. Over the years it has served as a military prison holding French soldiers captured by the Maltese or British during the French Blockade of 1798-1800 as well as a silk factory under British rule but in the early 1800s it fell into disrepair.

Since Verdala Palace is, in essence, a private home, it’s closed to the public but there are some great walks through Buskett Gardens and the local village of Siggiewi offering stunning views of the palace. If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you will have already seen the palace in a different guise – it was the set of the exterior of the mansion of Illyrio Mopatis in Pentos.

4. The Malta Aviation Museum

The Malta Aviation Museum in Takali houses an impressive collection of aircrafts, military uniforms and related equipment.

The main focus of the Malta Aviation Museum is World War II, particularly the important role played by Malta between 1940 and 1943. The main World War Two exhibit can be seen in the ‘Air Battle of Malta Memorial Hangar’ which includes a Supermarine Spitfire MkIX and a Hawker Hurricane MkIIA.

Mnajdra is a coastal megalithic temple complex in Malta listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The earliest of the Mnajdra temples was built sometime between 3,600 BC and 3,200 BC, dating back to the Ggantija phase, although there are several temple remains.

6. St John’s Co Cathedral

St John’s Co Cathedral in Valletta is one of the most important reminders of the Malta’s time under the Christian and military order of the Knights Hospitaller of St John.

Today, this grand cathedral is a testament to the Knights Hospitaller. Whilst externally it is a relatively simple structure, the inside of St John’s Co Cathedral is resplendent with frescoes, paintings and carvings. Many of these chart the life of the cathedral’s namesake. Amongst the works found in St John’s Co Cathedral are several by Caravaggio. In fact, St John’s Co Cathedral is home to the only painting ever signed by this famous Italian painter.

7. Malta National Museum of Archaeology

Located in the Auberge de Provence, house to the Knights of the Order of St John, Malta’s National Museum of Archaeology exhibits an impressive and intriguing collection of artefacts dating back as far as 5,000 BC covering Neolithic, bronze age, Phoenician period and others will soon be open and dedicated to the Punic, Roman and Byzantine periods.

You can refer to the museum catalogue or attend one of the guided tours.

8. Hagar Qim

Hagar Qim is one of Malta’s UNESCO-listed megalithic temples. Dating back to between 3,600 BC and 3, 200BC, Hagar Qim is a single temple which stands dramatically on a cliff-edge, although it may once have been a larger complex. There are also some other prehistoric structures nearby.

It’s worth noting that Hagar Qim is not far from the Mnajdra site and the two are usually seen together.

9. Mgarr Second World War Shelter

The Mgarr Second World War Shelter in Malta was one of a number of subterranean bomb shelters used by the population during the Siege of Malta. The Siege of Malta saw the island of Malta being subjected to an intensive aerial bombing campaign by the Italians and then the German Luftwaffe from 1940 to 1943.

The shelter is one of the largest of its kind and, since being found underneath a restaurant, has been restored. Today, it’s open to the public, who can tour its underground passageways and learn about the Maltese experience during the war.

history tours malta

10. Lascaris War Rooms

The Lascaris War Rooms in Malta were important military headquarters during World War II and the setting from which the invasion of Sicily as well as many other operations and Malta’s air defences were coordinated. Located underground and comprised of a complicated web of tunnels, the existence of the Lascaris War Rooms was secret.

A Royal Navy base for years after the war, in the 1960s the Lascaris War Rooms became a strategic communication centre for NATO. Since 2009 it has been under the management of the Malta Heritage Trust and is now a popular tourist site.

Malta's top 10 historical sites

Marvel at the baroque beauty of the cathedral, feel the cool air of an ancient underground burial chamber, or meet a soldier on a live re-enactment of military cooking; there are so many historical sites to be found in Malta that you will struggle to fit them all in. So whether you are new to the history of Malta or more versed in the culture, lose yourself in the past with our list of the top ten historical locations in Malta.

1. Ggantija Temples

This ancient site has found its way onto the UNESCO World Heritage list and is one of the most important archaeological sites in Malta. Located in Xaghra, Gozo, the two temples date from between 3600 and 3200 BC and are among some of the oldest of their kind in the world, they are even older than both Stonehenge and the pyramids in Egypt. Despite their antiquity they are fantastically well preserved and very highly rated by travellers.

2. Hagar Qim & Mnajdra Temples

This Neolithic temple complex was constructed around 5000 years ago and is one of the most fascinating in Malta. It is thought to have been used for fertility rituals although very little is known about what happened here. The temples are around 500 metres apart and there is a steep hill between the two, unfortunately a roof covering has been added to protect the ruins but it is still possible to walk among the stones and the roof does not detract from its historical significance.

3. Grandmasters Palace

Also known as The Palace, you can find this impressive building in Saint George’s Square, Valletta. Built in 1571, The Grandmasters Palace is a place where you can walk through the political history of Malta as this building has always been the seat of government.  Among the other stunning rooms you can visit the Palace Armoury, which holds weapons from the period of the Knights of Malta, and it is recommended to take a look at the spectacular Throne Room.

4. St John’s Co-Cathedral

Commissioned in 1572 but it wasn’t until the 17thcentury that the distinctive redecoration of St John’s Co-Cathedral was ordered and it became the Baroque beauty that you find today. Anybody with an interest in the Knights of St John should visit the St John’s Co-Cathedral as it is steeped in the history of the Knights. There is much on offer from this stunning structure and, aside from the beautiful baroque architecture, you can also see works of art by Caravaggio among the numerous fine art pieces. The museum also houses some exquisite 16th century illuminated manuscripts.

5. Fort Rinella

Situated in Kalkara, Fort Rinella was built in 1878 and is the world’s first mechanical fort. A vestige of Malta’s British Colonial past it is a testament to the mechanical advancements of Victorian industrialisation. The fort has recently undergone a restoration programme and there are animated tours available that have live re-enactments such as military cooking or bayonet practice among others.

6. Hal Saflieni Hypogeum

There are three levels of rock-cut chambers in the UNESCO World Heritage listed Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, which is an ancient underground burial site. The earliest remains found at the complex were dated to around 4000 B.C. and this is one of the few ancient burial chambers that it is possible to visit. Because of this it is very popular with visitors. Bear in mind that for preservation purposes only 10 visitors are allowed into the Hypogeum per hour so book ahead.

7. Auberge de Castille

Another link to the Knights of St John, the Auberge de Castille was built in 1574 as a residence for the Knights and it can be found at the highest point in Valletta. Although it was damaged quite badly during World War II it has been carefully restored and the architecture remains spectacular.

8. The National Museum of Archaeology

The National Museum of Archaeology is situated in Republic Street, Valletta and is a great place to start your historical journey through Malta. With artefacts dating back to around 5200 B.C., many of the most important finds from around Malta are held here. Many of the sites on this list have contributed some artefacts to the National Museum of Archaeology, which has sculptures, pottery and many other important exhibits, including some from the Hypogeum, Hagar Qim and Tarxien temples. For a fascinating look at ancient Malta, look no further.

9. Valletta

As the capital city of Malta, Valletta is steeped in history despite being no more than one square kilometre in size. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in itself because of its rich and fascinating past from Byzantine and Roman through to military and the Knights of St John. Valletta is described by UNESCO as one of the most concentrated historical areas in the world. While you can find the St John’s Co-Cathedral here and the National Museum of Archaeology there are numerous other museums as well as the fortifications, historic Manoel Theatre and the Grand Harbour, which has been central to Maltese history for centuries.

history tours malta

Mdina was the medieval capital of Malta and is a fantastic example of an ancient walled city; it is a must for history buffs. Throughout the Old Town there are guided tours available and even self-guided audio tours to make sure that you don’t miss any of the history that surrounds you. The narrow stone paved streets, elegant churches and palaces, and the restriction on cars within the city make it a peaceful walk through history, almost as if you have taken a step back in time.

history tours malta

This whole experience was fantastic, from the very funny back and forth emails with Giacomo when booking from England before we went (thanks also for the many helpful tips for things to do and see on the Maltese islands, many of which we ended up doing), to the evening itself with the simply brilliant Chris as the Corsair. Extremely educational and delivered with infectious enthusiasm. Puts everything in a much wider context; this isn't the conventional 'pantomime' piracy of eye patches, pieces of eight and parrots, but more about profiteering as a mutually advantageous political discourse to both defend the Grand Harbour and contribute to the coffers of the Knights of St John. As my daughter says below, don't miss it, there's nothing else like it.

Northampton, United Kingdom

Greatly recommend. very happy that i found them. the best corsair in the mediterranean. firstly, i am extremely grateful for the time giacomo and chris spent with me on trying to understand our needs and desires, working on setting up a nice tour to fit the budget and everyone's needs as we had 7 year old with us as well. secondly, consideration and patience, also involving our kid (later we found out that chris is also a teacher) and fitting into our schedule. lastly, thank you for your personal untraditional point of view and interpretation, it was really refreshing..

We were on a cruise and stopped in malta. i arranged a tour with chris who was exceptional. he customized our tour according to our time and requests. he was friendly and kind and extremely knowledgeable. we enjoyed our time with him and loved the tour of malta. i would highly recommend him.

Berlin, Germany

I visited malta with my adult son, who is, usually, not fond of guided tours, so i tried to find something exceptional to get him interested, and - yes - this corsair tour was absolutely brilliant we were lucky to have it all for ourselves - as it happen no other guests booked the tour on the same evening. the only disadvantage was the noise - streets of valletta is overcrowded in the evening, and sometimes our points of interest were surrounded with loud music and noisy people, but in general it was very good anyway. we both highly recommend it.

Kyiv, Ukraine

My husband booked this walking tour as part of our wedding anniversary stop over in valletta. we have stopped in valletta a couple of times but we learnt so much about places we have walked past previously, on this 2 hour tour with chris aka shandru. we were the only people doing the tour on this rainy evening but the guide still put lots into the tour. we thoroughly enjoyed learning about the corsairs in malta and its not a long walk so is suitable for all ages. think my grandchildren would love some of the stories and being shown around by a real life corsair (legal pirate)..

Norwich, United Kingdom

This is not your conventional tour it present a side of maltese history that - even though very intriguing - hasn't been spoken of enough chris, the tour guide, is clearly very passionate about the tour and history. he himself becomes part of the story, with colourful descriptions based on a lot of research. informative and fun, with details that surprised me (even though i'm a local).

I was looking for unique tours in malta and was so happy to find this company. and they didn't disappoint i had a fabulous tour with chris, or rather i should say xandro the corsair 🙂 he is a great storyteller, passionate and engaging the organisation of the tour is well done, providing fascinating facts that i would never have imagined it gave me a whole new perspective on valletta and malta. my only regret is that i didn't have time to do more tours with them. i guess i'll just have to come back soon thanks so much.
