Heroic Journey of Ne Zha

The Chentang town is suffering a severe drought. Ne Zha comes to help with people in town. As a religious ritual, people want to sacrifice a boy and girl to the Dragon King for the rain.

Ne Zha saves the boy and girl. Also, he comes to the dragon palace to give the dragon king a lesson. Yu Xian disguises herself as Na Zha and kills Ao Bing.

The dragon king sends his daughter to Kunlun fairy school. Yu Xian is being a spy and stays in the dragon palace in order to gather information about how to release her evil dad.

The Kunlun Fairy School senses chaos coming soon. The devil emperor sees a chance to break the seal and return to the world.

A village is attacked by a mysterious devil. Ne Zha decides to stay in the town and find that devil behind this chaos.

The fox spirit causes chaos and deaths in the village. The dragon princess is trapped by the fox spirit, and Ne Zha comes to rescue her.

Blood of Zeus Season 2 Review: Netflix's Greek Drama Fails Its Hero

The following contains spoilers for Blood of Zeus Season 2, now streaming on Netflix.

Greek mythology makes the gods seem more surprising than Game of Thrones , given all of their debauchery and plotting against one another. Netflix's Blood of Zeus does not sugarcoat this fact like most animated properties have, and tells a story as mature and dire as Greek lore itself. The second season continues to pit brothers Heron and Seraphim against one another -- but has solemn storytelling to cushion the blow.

Blood of Zeus Season 2 continues where Season 1 left off , with Heron and the Olympians mourning the death of Zeus, and Seraphim finding himself in Hell for his atrocities. But the conspiracy of the Gods leads the brothers to cross paths once more -- this time on more equal footing and with knowledge of their tragic past in mind. Season 2 introduces new Greek gods into a heated cauldron of simmering tension and bitter drama in a bid to fill its giant Zeus-sized hole, but the second season never quite lives up to expectations.

Blood of Zeus Season 2 Struggles to Find Its Power

The first season of Blood of Zeus followed the legends of Greek demigods Heracles and Perseus as the blueprint for Heron's origin story. His troubled life and the wrathful gaze of Hera were just one half of the show; the other half focused on Heron's half-brother and the equally unfortunate Seraphim. Blood of Zeus Season 2 takes a similar two-pronged approach, with Heron and Seraphim still on opposite sides -- but this season is more of a quest than a revenge play. The hunt for the elusive Elusinian Stone acts as the MacGuffin that shoves characters into danger and connects the newer pieces on the board to the two brothers. As a result, three separate narratives emerge out of the power vacuum left behind by Zeus, and they all get tangled together.

Season 2 gives Heron and Seraphim more agency over their actions, but they still need a push from others. While the Oneiros urges Heron to seek his destiny, Hades coerces Seraphim into his plans. Hades is also the latest god to enter the fray, and his introduction into the story opens up the realm of the Underworld. Most of the plot takes place either out in the mortal realm or in the depths of Hell, where dead characters from Blood of Zeus Season 1 arrive to be judged and sentenced accordingly. Season 2 provides a finality to each of their fates and brings them a sense of closure -- something that was largely overlooked in the aftermath of the battle with the Giants.

The show tries jumping from the slow-burning pace of Hades and Seraphim's heartfelt tete-a-tete to the action-packed adventures of Heron, Alexia and Kofi. There are action set pieces in which the young demigod shows off his electrifying new powers that leave the audience feeling an adrenaline rush, just from watching the show's underdog come into his own. However, the emphasis is mostly on drama. Betrayal, backstabbing, and conflict are still major parts of Season 2's storytelling, as they hold up a mirror to the ugly acts of arrogant gods. But with everyone wearing their hearts on their sleeves, Season 2 lacks the surprise that it wants to achieve with its plot twists.

Blood of Zeus Season 2 Elevates Some Characters and Fails Others

Heron, seraphim and hades stories take center stage, 10 strongest characters in fantasy television, ranked.

While Blood of Zeus Season 2 has every ingredient for gripping fantasy action, the show's focus has shifted from giving an all-encompassing view of its world to tunnel vision centering on a few characters. Only Heron, Seraphim and Hades leave any impact on the story; the rest of the cast fades away in the background. Alexia -- who was a fierce captain in Season 1 and voiced by equally fierce Iron Fist star Jessica Henwick -- seldom shows that same spark in Season 2. She gets one moment to show off her sword skills when she fights off a venomous Hydra and the towering Talos. But for the most part, her character is relegated to offering emotional support to Heron and being a voice of reason during his time of need.

On that note, Heron is more self-aware here in Season 2. He understands the intoxicating effects of the powers he has inherited and is wary of its consequences. This is very much unlike his brother, whose first instinct is to act out violently without thinking and leave a bloodbath in his wake. To the show's credit, Blood of Zeus gives even a remorseless monster like Seraphim a chance to redeem himself -- adding a long-dead love interest into his storyline to shake him off his apathy. With his betrothed chained to the Underworld and the episodes slowly revealing his softer side, the cursed prince gets the lion's share of attention and screen time. Heron's narrative thus feels bare bones and simple in contrast to Seraphim's, not to mention his motivations are purely plot-driven.

The only other character to enjoy as much limelight as Seraphim is Hades. Similar to Zeus in Season 1, Hades acts like a father figure to Seraphim... if only to make him join his schemes. Regardless of his motivations, that works because both characters have tragic backstories concerning their love interests. Fred Tatasciore deserves much applause for his portrayal of Hades, who is more of a sensitive, thinking man than a conniving villain. He may sound brutish and look like one, but Tatasciore's acting shows how misunderstood a deity Hades is.

Does Blood of Zeus Season 2 Improve Its Animation?

The second season can't overcome the existing shortcomings, 10 animated series that are as aesthetically pleasing as castlevania.

From sinners getting punished in the depths of Hell to the dark overcast over the sea as Heron's lightning strikes Talos, Blood of Zeus 's visuals create a grim look for the show. There are also specks of beauty hidden throughout, with some episodes emphasizing contrast to mirror the hope residing within the characters. But overall, the animation style is a huge letdown in Season 2: framerates are janky, characters' expressions do not always match their words, and the action scenes are nothing groundbreaking. This undermines the high-quality character art and colorful background work of the studios involved.

Blood of Zeus Season 2 still effectively utilizes Greek mythology despite its flawed animation. Paul Edward-Francis' otherwordly soundtrack effortlessly takes the story to greater heights with elaborate orchestral arrangements and emotional choruses. The show may have its flaws, but the sincerity of the creative team shines through brightly. Blood of Zeus Season 2 may focus on a more limited number of characters and not bring all of them to life as effectively, but it's still a worthy investment of Netflix's viewers time -- up to and including an ending that will shock the audience and hopefully pave the way for Season 3.

Season 2 has everything, from star-crossed lovers to vicious monsters. But poor hero vs. villain dynamic does no good to the underwhelming animation.
