What people love about Sapa Tours from Hanoi

Danny was very organised and conscientious throughout my whole tour! It was great to have different guides in the various places we visited as they had a lot of personal knowledge from growing up in the area. Cha, our guide in Sapa, was from a local tribe & taught me some of their language, and Guang, our Hanoi guide, was incredibly knowledgeable, interesting and entertaining. My dietary requirements were taken care of in each place, which made things a lot easier too. A wonderful tour overall which gives you a great introduction to the best places in Northern Vietnam!
We had so much fun during the tour. We also had the opportunity to experience with the locals and understand the local culture. Our guide was very nice and helpful. The retreat was really nice.
A well planned itinerary for this tour. So many highlights included. Gave a very informative view of northern Vietnam culture and its beautiful people. Excellent guide and driver. So supportive of all of our needs; strongly recommend this tour and this company.

1 Take a bus

Hason Hai Van sleeper bus Hanoi Sapa

The cheapest way to travel from Hanoi to Sapa is to take a bus. Long-distance bus services in Vietnam are more comfortable than other southeast asian countries. Taking a bus from Hanoi to Sapa is a good option if you are traveling on a budget. Many bus companies include a free hotel pick up. However, we always recommend being ready with a backup option if your pick-up does not come through.

Hason Hai Van sleeper bus Hanoi Sapa

We traveled with the Ha Son Hai Van bus company. They have a range of different buses in their fleet. We were particularly impressed with the Royal 20 Cabin Sleeper bus. The bus is spacious, comfortable and surprisingly luxurious. The Royal 20 cabin sleeper bus has comfortable beds with bedding included and an on board entertainment system. We couldn’t get this to work!

Hason Hai Van beds Hanoi Sapa

There are toilets on board the bus. We also love the thoughtful touch of including a free buffet with drinks and food at the bus station.

How much does it cost to take a bus from Hanoi to sapa?

Buses from between Hanoi and Sapa generally cost around 300,000VND – 400,000VND (approximately £10 – £15 or roughly $12 – $18)

How do you book bus tickets to travel from Hanoi to sapa?

There are several ways to book buses between Hanoi and Sapa. You can book directly with a bus company. Alternatively, speak to a tour operator in Hanoi or Sapa. You can also book Vietnam bus tickets online for this journey. Book tickets between Hanoi and Sapa with Sapa Dragon on Klook .

How long is the bus journey from Hanoi to sapa?

The bus journey normally takes 6 – 7 hours.

Some disadvantages of taking a bus from Hanoi to Sapa:

Here are some of the challenges and disadvantages of taking a bus. Firstly, some travelers have tried to arrange free hotel pick ups and been let down by the bus company. If you have time it may be better to get yourself to the bus station. Furthermore, if you take a night bus be aware that it will probably stop in the night and stops can be noisy and travellers have been woken up by drivers shouting.

If you take a sleeper bus be aware that cubicles may be too short for taller travelers. In some cases you may be dropped off outside of town (e.g. returning to Hanoi). Bus companies should organize transfers. Also a sleeper bus is less secure than a sleeper train. Never leave your valuables in your bag under the bus. Always make sure your valuables bag is very close to you and not accessible to anyone else (don’t leave it on the aisle side).

2 Take a luxury limo

limo van hanoi to sapa

A very fast and convenient way to travel between Hanoi and Sapa is to take a luxury limo van. This is a very comfortable shared 9-seater minibus with Wi-Fi, USB charging sockets, large comfortable seats and space for luggage. Luxury minibus limos offer a hotel pick up between 6am – 7.30am (you will be given an exact pick up time a day or two before departure). and they normally take one or two toilet breaks. It is worth taking a photo of the number plate of your minivan to make sure you find the right one at the end of the break. Many of the luxury limo minibuses do not allow food on board. Make sure you have a good breakfast before your departure.

How much does it cost to take a luxury limo from Hanoi to sapa?

500,000VND (around £17 or $20)

How do you book luxury limo tickets between Hanoi and Sapa?

We recommend that you book luxury limo between Hanoi and Sapa on Klook . This gives accountability, transparency and reassurance – and as ever you will always get a fair price on Klook.

The journey takes around 6 – 7 hours arriving at around 2pm at Sapa stone church

Taking a luxury limo between Hanoi and Sapa is genuinely a very good option. However, there are still a few setbacks. Firstly, it is important to be aware that you are not allowed to eat food on board. Another challenge of this journey is the bumpy windy road, especially towards the end of the journey. If you struggle with motion sickness this can be pretty tough. We recommend sitting towards the front of the bus if possible and bringing some motion sickness pills. Finally taking the minibus does involve getting quite an early start, especially if you are the first pick up.

3 Take a sleeper train

Night train from Hanoi to 4 bed sleeper cabin

The sleeper train is a fun, comfortable and unique way to travel between Hanoi and Sapa. Most sleeper trains depart from Hanoi around 9pm – 10pm from Hanoi central Railway station. The sleeper train is more expensive and slower than a bus. However, a sleeper train is likely to be more secure, comfortable and spacious than a bus.

Night train from Hanoi to 2 bed sleeper cabin

Trains also offer better facilities than a bus. It is not possible to get a sleeper train directly from Hanoi to Sapa. Instead, you need to take a sleeper train to a small town called Lao Cai (on the Chinese border). From here, you can take a mini bus to Sapa.

Night train hanoi to sapa door lock private cabin

Minibuses wait in the train station carpark in Lao Cai. They depart regularly once they fill up with passengers. If this sounds too awkward then the bus may be a better option for you (bus services are direct).

How much does it cost to take a train from Hanoi to Sapa?

Train prices vary between 700,000VND – 1,000,000VND (around £25 – £35 or around $30 – $40). You will then need to pay for a minibus transfer from Lao Cai to Sapa costing around 60,000VND. Minibuses wait in the carpark at the front of the station. Alternatively there is a scheduled bus to Sapa which costs 30,000VND per person and departs at 6am, 7am, 7.20am and 8pm.

TOP TIP: This may seem expensive but when you are working out your budget remember that this also gives you one night of accommodation as well as a journey. By taking a sleeper train you are saving the cost of a night of accommodation somewhere else.

How do you book train tickets to travel from Hanoi to Lao Chai?

You can book train tickets directly at the train station in Hanoi. You can book Vietnam train tickets on 12Go .

How long is the train journey from Hanoi to sapa?

The train journey normally takes around 8 – 9 hours, running through the night.

Lao Chai to Sapa minibus train station

There are a few disadvantages of taking the train between Hanoi and Sapa. Firstly, you need to get yourself to the train station. No cushy hotel pick ups. What’s more, night trains arrive quite early in the morning, normally around 5am – 6am. Be prepared to be rushed off the train in the morning. Remember that the train arrive in a town called Lao Cai. It takes an additional 45 minutes – 1 hour to travel to Sapa. It is also worth being aware but there are no food options available on the train. Furthermore, trains do not have any buffet cars, therefore we recommend eating before your journey or bringing food on the train with you.

4  Rent a car and drive

car rental in Sabah driving

Another way to get to Sapa is to rent a car and drive. This is probably a good option if you are traveling with a group or as a family and you’re looking for a convenient way to get around. One of the great things about renting a car and driving is the freedom. You can choose when to leave, when to stop, where to stop and you can use the car to get around in Sapa and also in Hanoi.

Cars in Vietnam

The journey between Hanoi and Sapa is around 315 km by road, this is likely to take around 5 – 6 hours. If you do choose to rent a car and drive in Vietnam we recommend that you are fully qualified, insured and experienced to drive in a country with very busy roads.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Hanoi?

Car rental deals start at around £140 per day (roughly $160)

How do you rent a car in Hanoi?

Did you know that you can use skyscanner to find car rental deals in Hanoi?

How long is the drive between Hanoi and sapa?

The drive between Hanoi and Sapa is likely to take around 5 – 6 hours

Some disadvantages of renting a car in Vietnam for this journey:

Although renting a car is very convenient and allows a lot of freedom there are some disadvantages of doing this. Firstly, car rental is an expensive option. You will also need to consider the price of petrol as well as rental fees – which are pretty high. Car rental is not a good option of you’re traveling on a tight budget. However, if you are traveling as a family you can share the cost across your group and it may actually be worthwhile. Another thing to consider if you are renting a car in Vietnam is safety. We recommend driving very carefully and taking time to learn the new Road rules and conventions. Make sure you are fully qualified and insured to drive in Vietnam. Car rental companies may also request Western Union or Bank Transfers for the deposit.

Summary – what is the best way to travel from Hanoi to sapa?

Fruit Sapa homestay

Overall, the best way to travel between Hanoi and Sapa depends on your budget, desire for convenience and your specific needs as a traveler. If you are traveling on a tight budget we recommend taking a bus. A luxury sleeper bus can also be a very good option for a family, because the beds are comfortable and they also have toilets on board.

If you want a fast convenient trip, we recommend taking the luxury limo van. Slightly more expensive than buses – but may be worthwhile for the smooth efficient journey.

If you’re interested in a new experience and you don’t mind the journey taking longer, it is worth considering the sleeper train. Although sleeper trains are more expensive, remember that you save one night’s accommodation costs by taking this option.

If you are traveling with kids and you want to explore other places along the way and be very mobile, renting a car may be a good option. However, we only recommend renting a car if you have a bigger budget for your trip and you are qualified and comfortable driving in Vietnam.

Dear Giang, I wanted to thank you very much for arranging our holiday so well - we had a wonderful time and everything seemed to go very smoothly. In the group tour at the start we were impressed by how various different staff always knew where... The private tour was particularly good and Khanh was an exceptional guide - great fun to spend time with, knowledgeable and good at keeping everyone happy throughout the trip. He adapted the itinerary to suit the weather and our preferences ... Thank you again. Best wishes,

Climb the Fansipan Mountain

Fansipan, commonly referred to as the “Roof of Indochina,” is the highest mountain peak in Indochina (including Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos). It is also the hightlight of Sapa.

With an altitude of 3,143 meters, Fanxipan is less than half of Mount Everest, you can take pride in having conquered a mountain at the tail end of Himalayas

This can be one of the best experiences you will have if you are confined to rooms with four walls for a long time.

peak-of-fansipan1

You will have the opportunity to zoom out of sight, which is completely covered by the green of the mountains and undulating mountains. Occasionally, a few bird wings appear in the wide sky, and the air is also better than ever.  After demanding workdays, in my opinion, it will be great moments to unwind and give your mind a break.

Climbing is most enjoyable in the spring or autumn. There will be less risk of rain during these seasons, and the weather will be ideal for mountaintop accommodations.

fansipan-peak1

Of course, another season could work as well, but there’s always a chance that clouds will block your view. As taking in the view of the surrounding mountains and villages is a major component of ascending Fansipan, you will be seriously missing out if the weather is not favorable.

Visit Sapa market for traditional handicrafts created by local people

Coming to Sapa without learning about its culture would be a big mistake because the beauty of Sapa is also created from the diversity of ethnic groups and their own customs.

With limited time, it will be challenging to gain a thorough understanding of each culture.

local-market-in-sapa

Traditional markets in Sapa, however, still can bring you the opportunity to learn some characteristics of each ethnic group.

Clothes, bowls, chopsticks, and other items that present their culture can be found easily here. You also can buy some handicraft souvenirs when walking around the market.

Attend a traditional festival with the locals and you will be astonished by the distinctive features of their customs.

a-lovae-market-in-sapa

For the ethnic minorities residing in Sapa and Lao Cai, the Sapa love market is a typical cultural aspect. This is the place where a boy and a girl can declare their love for one another.

Every Saturday night, trumpets and occasionally music can be heard at the Sapa love market. You will witness boys blowing trumpets, while girls are wearing national costumes, holding umbrellas, dancing gracefully to the music.

After expending all your energy on a variety of activities, try some of the grilled foods on the street. It’s ideal to enjoy some hot food because Sapa’s weather is likewise somewhat chilly and foggy. There are many different kinds of stalls, including pork, fish, veggies, and beef, so don’t worry about your pick.

The best time to go to Sapa is from March to May and from September to November. During these times, the weather is usually nice with sunny days and cool nights. From September to October, in the fall, it's dry and clear with lots of sunshine. Sapa's terraced fields look their best then, perfect for hiking and taking pictures.

In the summer, it's warm but not too hot, especially in April and May when you'll see lots of colorful flowers and green fields. Many Vietnamese people visit Sapa after the Lunar New Year to see cherry trees in bloom.

Winter, from December to February, gets very cold, especially at night. But it's worth it for the chance to watch the sunrise over the valley. Sometimes it snows, creating a beautiful scene, though it also means more people visit Sapa during this time.

Top 5 Best Places to Visit in Sapa

Sapa is a town that is often covered by a thick fog, making its ambiance cool and charming to visit with its refreshing climate and breathtaking landscapes. Surrounded by scenic views, numerous attractions are waiting to be discovered by visitors. Let's explore the list of five must-visit places in Sapa!

The old stone church in Sapa was built by the French in 1895. It shows how Sapa was influenced by the French a long time ago. Even though it's old, the church still looks nice and hasn't changed much. People who visit can see the beautiful stonework and all the small details on the building. Inside, the church is still used for Catholic services, like prayers and ceremonies. It's a peaceful place with a lot of history, and anyone who comes to Sapa should check it out to learn more about the town's past.

3. Ethnic Villages

When you visit Sapa, it's important to see the different cultures in the villages. You can join hiking trips to places like Cat Cat and Ta Phin villages. There, you'll meet the Hmong and Red Dao people who live in these areas. These villages show you what life is like in the mountains, with people doing things like making clothes, growing food, and making crafts. You will see lots of colorful clothes and the friendly locals will make you feel welcome. It's a great way to learn about their way of life and feel inspired by their traditions.

4. Muong Hoa Valley – Ancient Rock Engravings

Muong Hoa Valley is famous for old drawings on big rocks. These drawings are hundreds of years old and nobody knows where they came from. You can find them all over the valley. People can walk around the valley and see these drawings while also enjoying the beautiful scenery with lots of green plants and fields of rice growing on steps. Sometimes, especially in April and May, the rice fields turn golden, which looks amazing next to the tall mountains around the valley.

Experience the culture of Sapa at its vibrant market, where you will find colorful brocades from the Dao and H'mong people. Here, you'll find traditional handicrafts, colorful textiles, fresh produce, and local delicacies, all displayed in festive stalls. The market is a hub of activity, especially on weekends, when villagers from remote areas gather to buy, sell, and socialize. It's a cultural highlight that provides insight into the daily lives and traditions of the people of Sapa.

How to Get to Sapa

The first step to experiencing the beauty of Sapa is knowing how to get there. There are a few transportation options available to get to Sapa, providing you with transportation options and routes to ensure a smooth journey.

Located high up in the mountains and without an airport, Sapa is reachable only by road. The most common route from Hanoi is by overnight train, offering a scenic and relaxing journey. Alternatively, with the opening of a new highway in 2014, traveling to Sapa by bus has become a faster option.

1. By Train

Traveling by train to Sapa takes around 8-9 hours, with the train stopping only in Lao Cai, the province where Sapa is located. It then takes about an hour to reach Sapa from Lao Cai station.

Several tourist trains operate the route from Hanoi, each with carriages attached to the national train carrier. It's recommended to book your ticket in advance, especially during peak times such as Thursdays and Fridays from Hanoi to Lao Cai, and Sundays and Mondays from Lao Cai to Hanoi. These times are busy due to local tourists heading for weekend getaways and the Sunday market fair in Bac Ha attracting many visitors.

The trains usually depart between 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM, allowing you to enjoy a good sleep before waking up to the beautiful mountain scenery at dawn. There are also day trains available, although they are less comfortable and make more stops, resulting in a longer travel time. Night train tickets range from $35 to $180 per person per way, with the most expensive option being the Victoria Express, exclusively for in-house guests. Day train tickets cost between $10 and $20 per person per way.

To reach Sapa by bus, several reputable bus companies operate routes from Hanoi and other major cities to Sapa. Some recommended bus companies include:

- Sapa Express

- Green Bus

- Inter Bus Lines

- Queen Café Bus

- Ha Son - Hai Van

Bus fares range from $8 to $22 (180,000 VND to 500,000 VND), depending on the chosen bus company and the time of ticket purchase.

These bus companies offer various options in terms of comfort and price. Before booking your bus tickets, it's essential to check the schedules, ticket availability, and customer reviews. The bus journey from Hanoi to Sapa typically takes about 5 hours, although travel times may vary due to road conditions and traffic.

Opting to travel to Sapa by bus at night, around 10 PM, is advisable. This allows you to rest during the journey and arrive early in the morning at your destination, ready to start exploring right away!

3. By Plane

Getting to Sapa via plane involves flying into either Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi or Dien Bien Phu Airport in Dien Bien Province. Once you arrive, your journey to Sapa continues by road, either by bus or taxi.

1. From Hanoi (Noi Bai International Airport): Upon landing at Noi Bai Airport, catch a domestic flight to Lao Cai Airport. Then, it's just an hour's drive from Lao Cai to Sapa, where you can hop on a taxi or bus to reach your destination.

2. From Dien Bien Phu Airport: If you opt for Dien Bien Phu Airport, you'll need to take a bus or taxi from there to Sapa. Keep in mind that this journey may take several hours, so plan accordingly.

The cost of your flight will vary depending on factors like your departure location and the airline you choose. For instance, flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi typically range from approximately $26.00 to $73.48 (600,000 VND to 1,700,000 VND) for direct routes.

While flying to Sapa may not offer a direct route, it can be a convenient option if you prefer air travel or if other transportation methods are limited.

4. Using Private Transfers

Another option to reach Sapa is through private transfers, including taxis, motorbikes, or private cars.

1. Taxi: Hiring a taxi offers direct transportation from your starting point to Sapa, providing convenience and comfort. However, it may be more costly compared to other modes of transport, with prices ranging from 2,540,000 to 4,280,000 VND, depending on the taxi company and seating capacity.

2. Motorbike: For adventurous travelers with motorcycling experience, renting a motorbike is an option. Costs typically range from 80,000 to 130,000 VND per day. However, this option is suitable for experienced riders due to potentially challenging terrain and weather conditions.

3. Private Car: Renting a private car with a driver offers a comfortable and hassle-free transfer to Sapa. Booking in advance from various providers allows flexibility and scenic enjoyment during the journey. Prices usually start at 2,200,000 VND per day for a 4-seater.

When opting for private transfers, it's important to plan, assess route and road conditions, and arrange services with a reputable provider to ensure a safe and pleasant journey to Sapa.
