MBA’S MOST POPULAR WEBSITE ARTICLE EVER: FOX FLOAT 34 RHYTHM FORK TEST

We first published this review of the fox float 34 rhythm fork on our website in february 2017. since then, it's earned more views on our website than any other article we've ever published., fox float 34 rhythm fork.

Grip it and rip it

Fox

The Rhythm fork is new for 2017 and is designed for riders who want the performance Fox is known for without the price tag that typically goes along with it. Compared to the Performance and Factory versions, the Rhythm has a completely different 6000-series aluminum upper chassis with 34-millimeter stanchions but shares the same air spring as its higher-end brethren. This fork is only available as original equipment on new bikes for now; however, Fox says if there were enough demand from riders for the lower-priced option, it would be easy for them to offer it aftermarket for around $500.

The Rhythm’s Grip damper is a closed-cartridge system (like that of the FIT4) that keeps the air and oil separate but in a less expensive package. The Grip and FIT4 dampers are similar in concept but completely different internally. To keep the air and oil separate, the FIT4 damper is vacuum-bled, while the Grip cartridge has a small purge port that allows excess oil to flow during bottom-out but doesn’t have to be vacuum-bled during manufacturing. There are two versions of the Grip: one offers three adjustment levels and the other offers an open or firm setting like what comes stock on the Rhythm. The Performance-level forks get the three-position damper for a slight increase in price. The Rhythm does use a red-anodized rebound knob on the bottom of the lower leg and allows 22 clicks of adjustment. Our test fork was set up for 29-inch wheels and had 130 millimeters of travel. The Rhythm is coming stock on trailbikes with 29- and 27.5-inch wheels.

On the Trail:

This month we tested a top-end Intense Primer sporting a Fox Factory fork with the same travel and wheel configuration as the Rhythm fork we received for testing. This gave us a solid platform to compare the weights and performances of the two forks back to back. Out of the box, the Rhythm wasn’t as heavy as we were expecting, and the scales reassured us that there was only a minor penalty of about 100 grams compared to the top-end fork. We installed the Rhythm and set the sag at about 20 percent to match where the Factory fork was set. We left the air spring with two volume spacers, turned the rebound six clicks out and hit the local trails.

The slight increase in weight was hardly noticeable (if at all), and the first climb yielded positive results with the damper switched to its firmest setting. Out of the saddle, the 34-millimeter chassis felt stiff and gave us little to no flex during hard efforts. The “firm” setting is not a true lockout, but every one of our testers mentioned that it offered more than enough pedaling platform to feel efficient. Additionally, the two-position damper is so easy to use and understand that our testers didn’t have to spend any extra time getting used to the adjustments. This simplicity meant that all of our test riders, even the most inexperienced ones, were able to set this fork up quickly and hit the trail. It’s as close as you’ll find to “plug and play” in the suspension world.

The chassis features a less-fancy build process than the Factory-level forks. The tubes don’t have the thin and butted walls, nor do they feature the higher-end Kashima low-friction coating. On the trail, though, we’d be hard pressed to notice a difference between the two. In fact, we’d go out on a limb and say that for most riders, any difference is going to be due to the placebo effect. The Rhythm fork provides 90 percent of the performance of the Factory or Performance versions. While the most particular riders, suspension aficionados and elite racers will prefer the range of adjustability of the higher-end Fox product, we’re confident that anybody who buys a bike with a Rhythm fork mounted to it will be more than happy with the rock-eating suspension performance.

Fox Cuts Weight, Adds Performance to the Super-Popular 34 Suspension Fork

The 2022 Fox 34 inherits 36 technology and comes out a smoother, faster fork.

2022 fox 34

The Takeaway: Revised with a bit of the 36’s magic, the new 34 is a smoother, better-performing fork.

  • New chassis
  • Revised air spring with increased negative volume
  • Air bypass channels reduce pressure build-up
  • New 34 offered with GRIP2 or FIT4 damper in 130mm and 140mm travel

Weight: 1,828 grams (130mm travel, 44mm offset, with Kabolt thru axle) Price: $849 to $1,089

fox factory 2022

Even if you’re not in the market for a new fork, bike brands spec the 34 like mad, so you’re sure to run across this fork if you’re shopping for a new bike.

What You Need To Know About the 2022 Fox 34

The new 34 integrates many, but not all, of the updates Fox rolled into the 36 last year .

There’s the new rounded arch that sits farther forward. This, in today’s shorter offset forks, provides more clearance between the arch and a bike’s head tube when the fork is deep in its travel.

Though the arch design is stiffer than before, “The 2022 34 is roughly the same stiffness as the 2021 model,” said Fox’s brand manager, Sean Estes. “The 2022 is slightly stiffer in some planes and about the same in others.”

fox factory 2022

Though stiffness doesn’t change much, the new 34 is lighter by about 50 grams, giving the 2022 fork an improved stiffness-to-weight ratio.

The air spring gets a host of refinements. The new 34 has increased negative air spring volume for improved sensitivity, and air channels on the back of the casting to reduce pressure captured in the lower legs. Combined, they should make the spring feel more consistent through the fork’s travel.

$849 to $1,049 Fox 34

Fox 34

Harder to see is the new 58mm diameter crown. This is larger than before and mostly an aesthetics thing, so the area around the fork steerer better blends into modern head tubes.

Two things that didn’t carry over from the 36 are the floating axle and bleeder valves. According to Fox, “The 34 is designed to be as light and capable as possible. Bleeders, while offering an advantage in certain conditions, do add a marginal amount of weight. In shorter-travel applications—such as the 34—there is less opportunity for chassis misalignment. Therefore, the floating axle was not necessary.”

fox factory 2022

The new 34 comes in 130mm or 140mm travel and with either the GRIP2 damper or Fox’s familiar (and simpler) FIT4, which is 75 grams lighter, fits a remote, and has one rebound knob and a three-position (open/medium/firm) lever. The GRIP 2 offers more tuning options and, I think, does a better job sucking up bumps. But it’s heavier, and the four adjustments can be overwhelming for some riders. Fox says the new 34 fits up to a 2.6-inch tire. This fork is offered for 29-inch wheels only and with a boost axle. Available offsets are 44 and 51mm.

For weight-conscious riders, there’s a new 34 Step-Cast (SC). Offered in 100mm or 120mm travel, this fork comes in at 1,496 grams (Factory level, FIT4 crown adjust), making it about 130g lighter than the 2021 34 SC and only a bit heavier than the 32 SC (about 1,440g for the 29er). Though it’s a bit heavier, it should be a lot stiffer and might give XC racers some actual, you know, directional control. The maximum tire size for this fork is 2.4 inches.

2022 fox 34 sc

Like the normal 34, this fork gets the new arch and air channels. One 34 SC-only feature is an adjustable negative spring. Riders can run a larger negative spring volume for more sensitivity or add a volume spacer to give the fork a firmer feel off the top.

Expect to see the new 34 SC get a lot of use under Fox’s cross-country pros, “You might occasionally see a rider choose the 32 SC for a short-track race or other scenarios where 100mm is enough and stiffness isn’t paramount. But more than 90 percent of the time, our athletes will be on the new 34 SC,” said Estes.

The 34SC is offered for 29-inch wheels only and with a boost axle. Available offsets are 44 and 51mm.

How the 2022 Fox 34 Rides

2022 fox 34 float dpx

I loaded a fresh 2022 130mm 34 GRIP2 onto the front of a Marin Rift Zone Carbon —the same bike I used to test the new Float X and DPX shocks Fox dropped today—and hit the trails around my house in Durango, Colorado.

Even though Fox’s Estes says the new 34 isn’t stiffer than the old, it rides like a stiffer fork. It’s less twangy in the rough and holds a line better in high G situations, and tracks over repeated small and medium bumps with more accuracy.

I suspect that it feels stiffer because it is smoother and more reactive and is soaking up more of the impacts than the previous generation 34. All that, and it’s lighter than before too.

fox factory 2022

On the trail, and with the same(ish) setup like the old 34, the new 34 also seems to ride a bit deeper in its travel and is less progressive. I’m running my typical 20 percent sag—Fox’s weight/pressure chart seems pretty close, but, as always, I trust my ruler more than I trust a sticker—but compared to the previous generation 34, I’m rethinking my compression settings a bit, and my preferred number of volume spacers.

I’m still sorting through it, but so far, I’m running an extra volume spacer (four total in this 130mm fork) and a click or two of added low-speed compression damping (most of the time, I run my low speed fully open). My high-speed compression setting is the same (four clicks back from closed).

fox factory 2022

Overall, this is a better fork than the outgoing 34, and it narrows the gulf between this platform and that of the 36. It’s so much better that riding the new 34 doesn’t make me long for a 36—that’s not something I can say about the previous generation.

The fork category the 34 finds itself in has a lot of complex competing demands: It needs to be almost XC-fork light and with almost enduro-fork stiffness and performance. The new 34 balances those demands much better than before. This is a tough fork to get right, and Fox got it right.

What Is the Fox 34 Rhythm?

Equipped with a Float air spring for enhanced small bump sensitivity and control over a range of rough and ready runs, the 34 fork takes on every trail using responsive performance and a Rhythm GRIP damper for fine-tuning every off-road assault.

There’s the new rounded arch that sits farther forward. This, in today’s shorter offset forks, provides more clearance between the arch and a bike’s head tube when the fork is deep in its travel.

Though the arch design is stiffer than before, the 2022 34 is roughly the same stiffness as the 2021 model. The 2022 is slightly stiffer in some planes and about the same in others.

Harder to see is the new 58mm diameter crown. This is larger than before and mostly an aesthetics thing, so the area around the fork steerer better blends into modern head tubes.

Two things that didn’t carry over from the 36 are the floating axle and bleeder valves, This basically means that the 34 is designed to be as light and capable as possible. Bleeders, while offering an advantage in certain conditions, do add a marginal amount of weight.

In shorter-travel applications—such as the 34—there is less opportunity for chassis misalignment. Therefore, the floating axle was not necessary.

What is most impressive is that the new 34 fits up to a 2.6-inch tire.

Features and Specs

Like the normal 34, this fork gets the new arch and air channels. One 34 SC-only feature is an adjustable negative spring. Riders can run a larger negative spring volume for more sensitivity or add a volume spacer to give the fork a firmer feel off the top.

Expect to see the new 34 SC get a lot of use under Fox’s cross-country pros. You might occasionally see a rider choose the 32 SC for a short-track race or other scenarios where 100mm is enough and stiffness isn’t paramount. But more than 90 percent of the time, many athletes will be on the new 34 SC. Which is not to say the 34 is lacking.

The 34SC is offered for 29-inch wheels only and with a boost axle. Available offsets are 44 and 51mm.

Even though the new 34 isn’t stiffer than the old, it rides like a stiffer fork. It’s less twangy in the rough and holds a line better in high G situations, and tracks over repeated small and medium bumps with more accuracy.

Overall, this is a better fork than the outgoing 32, and it narrows the gulf between this platform and that of the 36. It’s so much better that riding the new 34 doesn’t make longtime MTB pros long for a 36—that’s not something that can be said  about the previous generation.

The fork category the 34 finds itself in has a lot of complex competing demands: It needs to be almost XC-fork light and with almost enduro-fork stiffness and performance. The new 34 balances those demands much better than before. This is a tough fork to get right, and Fox got it right.

All Fox forks follow the same naming convention, where a number tells you the upper leg diameter in millimetres, which in turn gives you an idea of the end-user the fork is suitable for.

Roughly summed up, the 32 series of forks are made for cross-country and light trail use, the 34 forks are meant for all-around trail use, the 36 is for heavy-duty trail/all-mountain use, the 38 is for enduro riding and racing while the dual crown 40 is made for downhill and extreme gravity riding. All of Fox’s aftermarket forks use air springs.

In addition to these base chassis designs, here are a number of different specification levels for each of them, which is why the Fox fork range adds up to around 160 different models…

Friction Rating

This is the highest level of Fox fork and is priced accordingly. All these models have high-end FIT4 and FIT GRIP 2 dampers and use the distinctive golden ‘ Kashima’ coating on the upper legs to reduce friction and increase wear life. The Kashima treatment creates microscopic pores on the upper legs that retain lubricating oil as the forks cycles through the travel, making it much slippier.

Performance Overview

This is the middle of the Fox forks range and while they share the same high-end damper technologies as the Factory forks with FIT4 and FIT GRIP2 options, the upper legs just have a black anodised finish rather than the Kashima coat.

  • Travel: 100mm, 120mm

How Does the Fox 34 Rhythm Compare to Other Forks?

This is the entry-level specification of Fox forks that are available on the aftermarket. Different, less complicated FIT GRIP dampers are used and the upper legs are again black anodised. The lower legs are the same as the higher end forks, however.

The standard chassis range is topped by the 34 Factory which comes with the FIT4 three-position damper for 2022. Like its Step-Cast sibling it only comes in a 29″ wheel option but unlike the Step-Cast model, there are 130mm and 140mm travel options. A tapered steerer is the only option but you can get it in Boost and non-Boost spacing for a 15mm axle. This model can also fit up to a 2.6″ tyre,

The 34 Performance Elite does without the Kashima coating but retains the FIT4 damper. It only comes in 29″ options and with 130mm of travel.

When it comes to e-MTB specific models, there’s only one. The 34 E-Bike Performance gets a GRIP damper and black anodised upper legs made from thicker-walled tubing than the conventional range.

It only comes in 120mm travel with Boost spacing, whether in 650b or 29er form. All Fox Shox forks allow the user to control how progressive the ending stroke of the fork is by using volume spacers. These require you to undo the top cap of the fork’s air spring side leg and then add or remove clip-on spacers.

Adding more increase the resistance to bottoming out, while removing them does the opposite. The volume spacers are specific to fork models and colour coded to match. The thicker legs on E-Bike specific forks require you to use a spacer from the fork below it; a 36 E-Bike fork would use the spacer for a standard 34 fork, not a standard 36 fork.

FOX 34 Step-Cast Factory Series Suspension Fork - 29

The Fox 34 might be the most versatile fork in the Fox lineup. It could be raced in cross country races or set at 140/150mm for aggressive trail riding. The Fox 34 still has two chassis versions, the Fox 34 and the Fox 34SC (step cast). Both get the update but almost start to become two different forks. The Fox 34 features 34mm uppers and a travel range of 120-140mm stock. Only 29” wheels and boost 15 x 110mm hub spacing will be available. For 2022 a lot has changed on the 34, it is basically an entirely new fork to be honest. From the chassis and the design, you get the new arch shape offering more clearance on the headtube and a 58mm crown. Both save weight and stiffen up the chassis. Also new is an updated EVOL air spring to give you more support yet still that buttery feeling off the top. Weight for this new 34 is 1,698g, saving over 70g from the previous 2021 model. The 34 Step-Cast Factory is the choice for riders who want an all-round fork that performs in a vast range of applications: lightweight for climbs and highly capable for demanding terrain with enough travel to instill confidence when the trail gets rough. Weight savings are attributed to external lower casting steps, hollow lower section, and shortened shaft lengths. FOX 34 Step-Cast Factory Suspension Fork - 29

Grip SL gives riders the lightest XC damper with unparalleled ride feel. Drawing on 50 years of suspension innovation, in 2024 FOX is launching three new dampers—each engineered from the ground up—that represent the pinnacle of suspension performance; the Grip X2 for ultimate descending performance, The Grip X for uncompromised all-mountain traction, and the Grip SL, the lightest XC damper with unparalleled ride feel. In the world of endurance racing, every gram counts. With the Grip SL, we created a short travel-specific damper that not only reduced weight but could keep up with increasingly demanding World Cup XCO and XCM races. Lockout performance is paramount on the Grip SL; firm for hammering pedals during a sprint while maintaining a smooth blowoff force when you hit a bump with lockout engaged. This reduces fatigue and conserves rider energy. When the compression adjuster is in Middle or Open mode, riders experience a supple stroke in the early stages of the travel with an optimized pedal-to-bump efficiency. The 34 Step-Cast Factory is the choice for riders who want an all-round fork that performs in a vast range of applications: lightweight for climbs and highly capable for demanding terrain with enough travel to instill confidence when the trail gets rough. The all-new MY22 Fox 34 mountain bike fork borrowed a lot of design cues from the bigger, heavier 36 and 38 forks , yet it uses those features to drop a lot of weight from the prior model.

As the sweet spot in travel for the down country, fun country, and trail bikes, the 120-140mm travel 34 has a lot of bikes looking at it to both save weight and offer crazy good performance. So, how did they chop about 200g off the Factory level fork without giving up the stiffness and traction it’s known for? Let’s take a look…

The most visible difference is the new arch, which looks much bigger and rounder than before. The extra ribbing and wrapping around the tops of the lowers help it resist torsional flex and keep the legs sliding in the same direction.

On the back are a few bracing elements, but note how it extends its connection farther around the top of the lowers, just below the wiper seals. The two threaded bolt holes are for attaching their Live Valve sensor. They might work for a fender…Fox just doesn’t make one for the 34.

The new 34 gets these extra volume channels on the backs of the legs. This adds a bit of air volume to the space inside the lowers. While not technically part of the air spring, that air also gets compressed when the fork is compressed, so increasing the volume means it has less of an effect on the suspension’s performance.

Fox says these channels also help oil get up to the top of the fork more easily, too.

The new crown has more ridges and shaping, which are both functional and aesthetic. They likely make it stiffer, but also help fill that space under your headtube now that so many bikes are using really fat head tubes.

A little extra chiseling around the dropouts saves more grams, which will become more apparent when you see it side by side further down. Order it with the tooled Kabolt thru axle to save more weight, you’ll see that even with this quick release version they saved a few grams.

The Factory level fork is available with their top-of-the-line GRIP2 damper, which is what our test fork’s sticker says we have, but this one is the FIT4 damper…which is a claimed 70-75g lighter. More on that below.

Get the full tech story on the fork in our 2022 Fox 34 launch coverage . Now, let’s see it side by side with the prior model…

2022 Fox 34 vs 2021 Fox 34

detail photo showing feature comparison between new and old fox 34 mountain bike forks

How does the new MY21 Fox 34 suspension fork compare to the prior MY21 model? We’ll get to performance differences in our upcoming review, but here’s a visual feature comparison to show how they cut so many grams, and where they saved weight.

detail photo showing feature comparison between new and old fox 34 mountain bike forks

Starting at the top, the crown’s extensive shaping continues to the bottom, too, with a slight recess punched in where the steerer tube is bonded into place. While the new model’s crown doesn’t immediately look much better, you can see how it fills in the space better.

detail photo showing feature comparison between new and old fox 34 mountain bike forks

The GRIP2 damper is their premium damping tech, delivering a lot of clicks to help you fine tune the high- and low-speed compression and rebound damping with individual knobs for each. It also has a bit more advanced valving inside.

The FIT4 damper uses a simpler 3-position external compression adjustments (Firm, Medium, and Open) with a 22-position dial that lets you fine tune the low-speed  “Open” mode’s damping. Think of this as the Climb, Trail, Descend switch that with proper setup on the air spring you can probably just leave in Open the whole time.

Why opt for the FIT4 damper? Fox says it’s a bit firmer, making it a good choice for those who are on more pedally trails, or more of a racer looking for a fork that feels a little more efficient. Or weight weenies…because it’s ~70g lighter.

detail photo showing feature comparison between new and old fox 34 mountain bike forks

Side by side you can really see how much more robust the new arch looks.

detail photo showing feature comparison between new and old fox 34 mountain bike forks

There appears to be less material on the backside of the arch, too. Check out the tops of the lowers, where the arch meets it and wraps around a bit more. The lowers’ legs look just a bit leaner, but gain the extra volume “straw”.

detail photo showing feature comparison between new and old fox 34 mountain bike forks

The bottoms of the legs get a bit more of the shroud removed on the backside, but it dips lower on the front, wrapping directly into the bottom of the dropout.

2022 fox 34 factory fork lower leg comparison

From this view some of the little differences are more apparent. Note the extra material at the base of the lower where it connects to the dropout, on the inside (left) face.

detail photo showing feature comparison between new and old fox 34 mountain bike forks

The dropouts themselves have a few minor differences, too.

detail photo showing feature comparison between new and old fox 34 mountain bike forks

Note how the outer edges (marked with lines in pics above and below) of the dropouts are slimmed down just a bit from before…

detail photo showing feature comparison between new and old fox 34 mountain bike forks

…but the inner edges (not marked) actually appear just a bit thicker.

detail photo showing feature comparison between new and old fox 34 mountain bike forks

Side view of the dropouts show a few more differences…but what’s more important here are the differences in the post brake mounts.

detail photo showing feature comparison between new and old fox 34 mountain bike forks

The prior MY21 Fox 34 (left) used an adapter to push the caliper out to accommodate a 180mm rotor. The new MY22 34 repositions the post mounts higher, which actually lets them be shorter and straighter, and now you don’t need any adapters to fit a 180mm rotor. This saves more weight than you’d think…scroll on.

detail photo showing feature comparison between new and old fox 34 mountain bike forks

Here’s where things get a little tricky. Fox’s QR Thru Axles used to be lighter. But then they simplified them, and they got heavier.

fox 34 rhythm travel 120 mm

You can tell the “new” ones because they have an allen key accessible on the end of it, otherwise, they look very similar…but the weight difference is dramatic, as you’ll soon see.

2021 Fox 34 actual weights

actual weight of new fox 34 fork and parts

Out of the box, a 29er MY22 Fox 34 Factory FIT4 fork with uncut steerer weighed 1,730g (3.81lb). That’s with the thru axle on it and no star nut.

actual weight of new fox 34 fork compared to old fox 34

The MY21 Fox 34 it’s replacing had a steerer tube cut to 7.5″. Without axle or star nut, it weighed in at 1,820g.

The MY22 Fox 34 with steerer tube cut to 8″ without axle or star nut weighed in at 1,640g. I intentionally left the steerer a bit longer so I could move it between a wider variety of bikes. But I did forget to attach the cable clip, so in the interest of making it fair:

actual weight of new fox 34 fork and parts

Add two grams to the weight of the new fork.

actual weight of new fox 34 fork and thru axles

The difference in axles is dramatic: 76g (original) versus 114g (new). That’s 38g of unsprung weight. ( We’re clarifying this with Fox…there’s a chance Factory-level forks will ship with the lighter axle, and we’ll update this post as soon as we have confirmation. But, they have told us that if you want the lightest possible setup, upgrade to the Kabolt . Our test fork came with the lighter axle, we’re just not sure if that’s how they will ship. )

actual weight of new fox 34 fork and brake mounting parts

With more (most) trail bikes now spec’ing 180mm front brake rotors, the move to a direct-mount design makes a lot of sense. The lack of adapter and longer screws saves 23g of unsprung weight.

Add it up and there’s a big difference:

  • MY21 Fox 34 Factory GRIP2 – 1969g
  • MY22 Fox 34 Factory FIT4 – 1729g

That’s a 240g (0.53lb) difference, which is huge. Opt for the GRIP2 damper and add 75g, that’s still a 165g (0.36lb) drop. With most of that weight savings coming low on the fork, and being unsprung mass, it should help improve performance. Swapping to the KaBolt thru axle will drop another ~40g.

Thanks Tyler, appreciate the thorough comparison.

Voiceofreason

Wringing hands over unsprung weight on a 25 lb +/- bicycle that is primarily ” sprung” by your arms and legs is ridiculous.

FritzP

Isn’t it actually a reduction of weight of the subsystem that is made up of the fork lowers, brake caliper, rotor, wheel and tire. Not the entire bike.

Michael Dion

“Opt for the GRIP2 damper and add 75g…”

The GRIP2 damper’s going to add a little bit more weight than that. A 2021 Fox 34 GRIP2 damper with hardware I weighed was 295 grams, and a 2021 Fox 34 FIT4 damper with hardware weighed 195 grams. And with the additional 25 mL of oil the GRIP2 damper requires makes it just shy of 125 grams heavier than the FIT4.

Shafty

Who cares! If you’re getting GRIP2, you have higher priorities than a minuscule weight difference. Namely, outright better damping performance. Time weighing your parts could be better spent using them….

Time reading and commenting about the weight of parts could be better spent using them too.

(And btw, weighing parts takes even less time than reading about or commenting on them. Now go ride your bike.)

None Given

Now, if Fox could just figure out what way they want to go with the 2-Pos lock (PTU or PTL)….being as I can not seem to get decent answers from Fox…may end up just going to RockShox (who at least have the same direction for front and rear).

Jeff Schram

Installed 2022 Factory grip 2 140 mm travel on my 2017 Fuel EX, changed to 44mm offset. Dampening is amazing and 44mm offset made made bike respond quicker on tight trails in my area. Saved over 1 pound over stock fork.( Rhythm)

What was the weight of your new 2022 34? Thinking of getting the same one but want to know how much I will save over my 36. Thanks!

1915g. Fox Float Factory Grip 2 29er 140mm 15×110 44mm uncut steerer, no star nut. With axle. Not quite what they are advertising is it ?

Suns_PSD

I like this sort of stuff. Comparing the ’22 34 vs. the ’22 SC 34 what’s the weight difference and more importantly the rigidity difference between the 2 products? Thanks!

Greg

My 2021 34 FIT4 factory, 140mm forks, weight circa 1780g with Kabolt axle included, just so you know. Talking about grams war, it’s a shame this comparison was not taken with the forks of the same specification (I some comment suggested the GRIP2 is in fact over 100g heavier to FIT4)

The other day I weighted the new 2022 36 Grip2 and was quite disappointed how heavy it was. I decided to stick with the Pike (over 300g lighter).

totally agree. Not sure what is up with my heavy fork but dam. not what was advertised. 1915g Fox Float Factory Grip 2 29er 140mm 15×110 44mm

Cyclopathic

Sounds like the MY21 model. Visually near identical. The tolerances can’t be that far out to be an MY22.

Tom

I just got a MY 23 Fox 34 Factory GRIP 2 29er 140mm Kabolt-X axle 44mm and it came in at 1,885 grams (uncut, no star nut). I also just got a MY24 Fox Float shock that came within 5gms of advertised weight at 325 gms.

Review: 2019 Fox 34 Factory Step-Cast 120

Jason Mitchell

Anything that’s racing orange is already tops in my book. There’s something about that color that just gets me. Apparently, the folks at Fox Racing Shox feel the same way because their new Factory-level forks are all sporting it. As a replacement from the OEM fork, the all-new 2019 Fox 34 Factory Stepcast fork not only looks fast, but kills it on the trail.

Fox 34 Factory Step-Cast 120 Features:

  • NEW Step-Cast chassis — same stiffness as 34/140mm
  • FLOAT EVOL air spring
  • External steps in lower casting reduce weight
  • Dedicated air spring and damper tune
  • 120 mm travel
  • 27.5 chassis fits up to 2.8” tire, 29 chassis fits up to 2.6” tire
  • 15x110mm Kabolt axle
  • Gloss Orange or Matte Black paint options
  • Genuine Kashima Coat
  • Weight: 1635 grams (actual)

2019 Fox 34 Factory SC 120 Fork Review

Light, stiff, smooth and orange

Yeah, orange. Luckily, I’m quite fond of the color and it looks mighty fine on just about any bike — even a bright yellow Giant XTC Advanced 27.5+ . Yes, Fox does make it in a traditional black color too (for those who don’t appreciate the finer things). Certainly, color means nothing on the trail, but the look of the 2019 Fox 34 Factory Step-cast 120 is also unmistakable with its unique, stepped legs and the added stiffness of 34mm stanchions to boot.

While 120mm is a tad more than traditional XC forks, it’s spot-on for long-legged XC or marathon bikes these days. The 120/120 or 120/100 bike is absolutely perfect, in my opinion and getting a 34 Step-Cast instead of the more traditional 32mm fork makes a huge difference in ride quality.

2019 Fox 34 Factory SC 120 Fork Review

Lateral stiffness is definitely the star of the show here, but doing so while dropping weight over the comparable Float 32 120 model is quite the feat. And, comparing the 34 SC to the RockShox Judy SL it replaced represented a whopping 355 grams in weight savings (that’s a full 3/4 lbs!) with performance on another level. Indeed, comparing the Judy SL to this model is unfair, but that’s what I did and it blows it away on every level.

When Kashima was introduced, it set a new standard for stiction by reducing it significantly. Since that time, others have tried, but Kashima remains the best stanchion coating on the market. Plus the gold color stands out in a crowd.

The following video shows where the fluid flows through the valves depending on the settings chosen.

As with any fork at this level, adjustments abound. This one features the FIT4 3-position dial (open, medium, firm) on the top of the right leg. Air adjustments are made atop the left leg. At the bottom of the right leg is the rebound adjust with 12-clicks of variation. Even a single click on these dials delivers changes in performance that can be felt. As a test, I’ve turned both the open adjust and rebound to either extreme and it drastically changes performance. Each step along the way enables fine-tuning that will satisfy the inner nerd in all of us.

While some riders will obsess over each setting and even adjust volume spacers, not all of us will do that. If that’s you, then rest-assured there’s enough there to tinker before each ride. But, for the most part, I’ve found that following the Fox 34 Setup Guide is the best way to go. I start there, then vary air pressure and other adjustments by a click or two until it’s just right.

Fox Factory 34 Stepcast Review

Trail time does not disappoint

After dialing it in, I went on a break-in ride the second I took it off the bike stand. Immediately, the weight savings and lateral stiffness could be felt. Tracking and steering precision were ratcheted up a notch with added confidence that a stiffer chassis provides. With all my testing miles aboard a 27.5+ hardtail, those 2.8″ tires require exaggerated lateral movements and the 34 SC doesn’t even flinch. The harder I press it with extra-wide RaceFace Turbine R 800mm bars , the better it responds.

As mentioned, I set everything up according to the guides and then made slight variations from there. I will say that wasn’t entirely the case for the Open Adjust dial. I turned that one wide open because when I wanted to bomb something, I wanted the smoothest, wide-open travel possible. Then, for the rest of my riding, I would just flip it into medium.

2019 Fox 34 Factory SC 120 Fork Review

The medium setting is spectacular for everything right out of the box. Honestly, I could ride in that setting all the time and never know the wiser. I used firm just to test it out, but never lingered there. Again, my money is on the medium setting for no-brainer performance.

With large-volume tires, it’s hard to pinpoint the suppleness of the 34 SC 120, but it’s supple. Small trail chatter simply disappears and large drops are absorbed progressively.

The only nitpick I’ll bring up is that the FIT4 lever should have a bit more positive engagement between settings. When reaching down over bumpy terrain, it wasn’t always easy to flip the switch into the medium setting. I would prefer a more telltale stopping point.

Look for this fork on several off-the-shelf models at your local shop, as an upgrade to your existing trailbike or part of your dream build.

  • 34 Step-Cast chassis is stiff
  • Drops boatloads of weight off traditional forks
  • Immediate steering precision
  • Tracks like a champ
  • Smooth suspension performance
  • Adjustments galore
  • Works for both 27.5+ and 29″
  • I wish that the FIT4 lever had a little more positive engagement

The Bottom Line: 2019 Fox 34 Factory Step-Cast 120

Fox likes numbers and stuff when it comes to naming their products, but don’t let all those numbers dissuade you — the 2019 34 Step-Cast will transform your trail bike by lowering weight and adding steering precision. Improvements can be immediately felt over 32mm forks with less front-end weight for a livelier feel.

Can I Extend Fox 34 Step Cast 120mm to 130mm?

  • Add to quote

The Intense Sniper Trail Build comes with a Fox 34 Step Cast Float front shock 120mm. I read on the Fox website that it has 2 air spacers. It says that if your sag is set correctly and you are using all your travel you can add a spacer to regulate it from bottoming out. Or if your sag is set correctly and you are NOT using all your travel then you can remove a spacer. I was thinking the spacers related to the amount of travel. I was wondering if there is a way to change the travel of the shock from 120mm to 130mm. Is that possible? I thought the spacers had something to do with it, but I'm a little confused.

Let me offer a little bit of probably unsolicited advice. A 120mm fork that you have fully dialed in to use all of its travel to your best advantage in your given riding conditions is going to ride bigger than 130mm fork with average setup. So you're stuck with 120mm, Make sure that it's the best 120mm of travel for you that it can possibly be and I doubt you would notice any difference going to 130mm. If it's not that you want more travel, but rather you want a slacker head angle You can get an angle set headset and change the angle without changing the fork travel. If it's that you want your hands higher then you can change that with a stem and or a riser bar. If overall you just want to feel more confident smashing over taller obstacles, then make sure that your fork is working optimally, slack out your head angle a degree, raise your hands an inch or so, and run a bigger front tire. All of that put together will make way more difference than just 10 more millimeters of travel on its own.

Hank....I'm thankful for those with knowledge willingly share it with those of us who are not up to speed on these things. Everything you said makes perfect sense. In fact, I recently did put a 2.6 on the front end and WOW....very nice indeed, it just made me 'wonder' if the 130 would give me yet another WOW factor. I'm not sure is slacking the bike would help me outside of gaining a bit of length and loosing a bit in the steering (tight areas). Anyhow, thanks again for the feedback, exactly what I needed to hear/read. Best regards

Still no.

So...there's a chance?

Spacers you're referring to are air volume spacers that reduce the air volume in air chamber by making it smaller. Reducing air volume in air chamber doesn't physically increase travel since the air chamber is already longer than the travel of the fork. However, if sag (related to air pressure) and the force applied to the fork (related to the aggressiveness of riding) are the same, then the smaller air chamber results in less travel used due to added progressiveness from smaller air chamber size. Air is gas and gas doesn't compress linearly but the force required to compress increases exponentially the more you try to compress it. That being said, some forks also have travel adjust spacers in the air spring but generally I believe it's less common for a fox fork to have such installed in stock installation. To be sure, you could check from the fox service manual. Just need to input the four-digit tune code or serial number found from your fork in the fox service page for instructions.

It is 100% certain that you can not go to 130 in a step cast. I looked into it before buying a 130 34.

I would take your word on it. I was just trying to offer a bit more in-depth explanation as OP was confused about the spacers.

fox 34 rhythm travel 120 mm

However, Hank, a perfectly dialed 130 would go to eleven over a perfectly dialed 120.

fox 34 rhythm travel 120 mm

It goes to 10.8 by my calc, just shy of the fabled 11.

I really enjoy and appreciate your suggestions Hank. Great ideas! I’m really thinking about a higher neck or riser bar.

Here is the best advice- don't, Intense has already posted in the Sniper thread and warned against it.

Can you link me to that post? or summarize why? thanks!

fox 34 rhythm travel 120 mm

What about a 32 100mm Stepcast - can it go to 120mm?

fox 34 rhythm travel 120 mm

No, it maxes out at 100mm.
