In the southeastern United States, Florida is a popular tourist state surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. There are more than 21 million people living in the sunny state, and millions more visit every year. With approximately 2.4 million fur babies living in Florida and millions more coming to the state annually, you will notice that there are lots of pups hanging around in the parks, at the beaches, and even at restaurants.

If you measure the coastline from one end to the other, you will find 1,350 miles of waterfront on the ocean and the Gulf with 200+ beaches. A lot of the beaches allow dogs, either on or off the leash, so pack some water toys and sunscreen for both of you.

You will have lots of choices where to stay with almost 30,000 dog-friendly rental properties in the state. They also boast 6,575 restaurants that welcome canine companions, 350 dog parks, and 75 official dog beaches. Don’t forget to pack plenty of doggie bags too. You never want to be out and about without a baggie to pick up what your pup drops, especially at the beach. These are the top 15 dog-friendly cities in Florida.

Saint Petersburg

As a pup parent, you may have already heard that St. Petersburg is the most popular dog city in the US. Located in midwestern Florida on the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay, this coastal town has more vets, groomers, and pet stores than any other city in the country. And your pooch is welcome at over 15 malls and 130 restaurants, and they have more than 40 dog parks.

St. Petersburg is the perfect place for a summer vacation, with 11 beaches that welcome fur babies . Fort De Soto and Picnic Island Park are two of the most pup popular because the fenced beaches allow for playing off the leash. Sunset Beach Park also allows your canine companion to be off the leash, but there are no fences to keep him in.

After your swim, you and your cuddle buddy can take in a flick at the Ruskin Family Drive-In Theater, where they have been playing since 1952 when they showed Singing in the Rain. Grab some popcorn and hot dogs at the concession stand for both of you, and do not forget the doggie bags.

Cocoa Beach

If you plan to bring the kids with you, Cocoa Beach is the perfect spot because it is just a short drive to all the amusement parks, including Disney World, Discovery Cove, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld. Although pets are not allowed at these attractions, you can drop off Fido at one of the reputable doggie daycares like Bow Meow Boarding or the Dog Spot Hotel .

Jacksonville

Jacksonville has almost a million residents, including over 337 parks covering 80,000 acres of space. With warm weather all year long, it is a popular vacation spot, especially during the winter when people are trying to get away from the cold. Many people bring their dogs, too, adding to the 115,000 already living there. Winter temperatures are often in the 70s, so it is a popular place for outdoor activities with your pooch.

Pensacola

Or you can take him to Arlington Park, where they have a huge lake and a fenced dog park for free.

If you want a place for cheap eats, head over to Freddy’s where you can get a burger, fries, and a drink for less than 10 bucks! Or you can go to Mad Dogs, where they have hot dogs with the works for under five dollars. Bring your own doggie bags.

Jacksonville Beach

For a romantic vacation with your best fur buddy and significant other, Jacksonville Beach has some of the most romantic date ideas for dog-loving couples. First, reserve a suite at One Ocean Resort & Spa where they have oceanfront views and couples’ spa visits. You and your pup and your loved one can take a romantic stroll on the beach. Jacksonville Beach City Beach is dog-friendly and is right outside your hotel door.

Or, take your honey for a candlelight dinner at Savor Restaurant, where they have cozy wraparound sofa seating. However, you cannot bring Fido to the restaurant, so you will have to get a pet sitter like Beach Bark or A Friend In The Woods Dog Daycare.

After, you can take your fur baby and your lover to BrewHound Dog Park and Bar to enjoy some adult beverages while your canine companion plays with other pups. Or go to Green Room Brewing, where they allow dogs on the patio beer garden. Then, take a trip to Paradise Poochie Bakery for a special doggie treat.

While you will not find any oceanfront beaches in Ocala, you will find lots of pooch-friendly places and activities to enjoy. Right in the middle of northern Florida, Ocala is the horse capital of the world, and you can find more than 400 thoroughbred farms in the city. Your pupster is even welcome to join you at the World Equestrian Center as long as you keep him on a leash.

The city is also known for its many family parks, such as Tuscawilla, which has two lakes, hiking trails, and a boat dock, as well as picnic areas with tables and barbecue grills, playgrounds for the kids, and some awesome fishing spots. If you want to let Fido off the leash, go to Bark Central Dog Park . It has 15 acres of fenced space for pups to play leashless, and both the small and large dog sections have their own pond.

Key Biscayne

You can find Key Biscayne on an island just southeast of Miami between Crandon Park and Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. The city has some of the best summer activities to enjoy with your canine compadre such as beaches on both sides of the island, a dozen dog parks, and an array of restaurants and bars with outdoor seating. First, for the best place to enjoy the beach with your buddy, check out the Ritz-Carlton, which is the only hotel on the beach, and they allow all dogs.

Speaking of the beach, there are quite a few dog-friendly beaches , including Hobie Island Beach, which is on the tip of Virginia Key Island, or Virginia Key Beach Park, right next door. Also, there is a beach at the end of Enid Drive, simply named Beach Park, where dogs are allowed to join their pet parents.

If you want a boat ride, Club Nautico rents them, or you can enjoy a Duck Tour amphibious bus ride in Biscayne Bay. Afterward, share a meal with your poochie at Tutto Pizza & Pasta where they have a lovely patio.

Panama City Beach

Known for its white sand beaches and calm blue waters, Panama City Beach in northwest Florida is a pup popular spot to take your fur baby for a weekend getaway. No matter what month you choose your weekend trip, Panama City Beach is always warm and almost always sunny. Pack your dog’s favorite water toys because there is lots of pet-friendly oceanfront space here.

The most popular dog beach is The Dog Beach at Pier Park between public beach access sites 55 and 58. Dogs are allowed to play without a leash, but make sure he is voice-controlled. Be sure to bring doggie bags and sunscreen because you won’t find those here. You can also take him to Pier Park and Margaritaville, where dogs are welcome on the patio.

If you want to get out in the water with your fur baby, talk to Coastal Wildlife Adventures Dolphin and Snorkel Tours. Or you can rent a boat from Lagoon Platoons.

Miami Beach

Of course, just about everyone has heard of Miami Beach. But did you know that there are more than 20,000 fur babies living in the famous resort city? With winter temps in the upper 70s, you can take your canine compadre there to hide from the cold and snow of winter. The city boasts 30+ beaches, with many that allow pups to join in the fun.

Lummus Park has a mile of white sand for leashed dogs, along with a 26-acre park to explore. For some off-leash swimming, head to Haulover Beach or Hobie Island Dog Beach. With 280 dog-friendly vacation rentals, you and Fido will have your choice of beaches to stay by. Some of these include SLS South Beach, The Savoy, Trump International Beach Resort, and Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club.

If you want to do some shopping, you can take your leashed fur buddy to Bayside Marketplace. They have dozens of outdoor shops and eateries with a grassy dog park.

If you are looking for a place in Naples with a lake instead of the ocean, Naples has a few. Freedom Park Beach has several lakes as well as creeks, but you should keep him on a leash and keep an eye on him because there are alligators in the park. K-9 Corral at Estero Park also has four lakes as well as 55 acres of fun space.

You will not have any issues finding a pet-friendly hotel either because there are more than 700 vacation rental properties in Naples. Gulfcoast Inn has a pool and restaurant and is just across the highway from Freedom Park, so you can walk there. Embassy Suites by Hilton is just a few minutes from K-9 Corral, and it has a gym, restaurant, pool, and hot tub.

Those who want to paddle the lake can rent a pet-friendly kayak or canoe from Nauti Exposures or you can take your pup for a cruise at Bark on the Ark.

Saint Pete Beach

Get ready to get away at Saint Pete Beach with your fur baby. The beach island is pup popular with over 100 vacation rentals, dozens of dog friendly restaurants, several dog parks, and a dozen dog beaches. So your getaway will be filled with furry fun no matter what you are into. Want to see some dolphins? Take your pup on a St. Pete Beach Dolphin Tour, Shell Key Shuttle Cruise, or Tampa Bay Sunset Eco Tour.

You can stop by Nikko’s Dog & Sports Bar, where you can get some brew while your cuddle buddy plays in the yard. Also, there is the Dog Bar in nearby St. Petersburg, where pup parents can mingle while the pooches play in the fenced dog park. Nearby, take your pupster to the Devil’s Elbow, and your happy hound can play in the water at St. Pete Beach Dog Park .

Dogs can enjoy many of the definitive Floridian activities their human counterparts do, spanning strolls on the beach, getting spoilt in luxury hotels, and yes, even paddleboarding.

Of course, it's not safe to assume dogs are automatically welcome everywhere that humans are. But, with a little research into the statewide landscape, you’ll learn that there are plenty of dog-friendly destinations and things to do within virtually any Florida destination. Here are the best ways to make memories with your dog in Florida.

Paddle Fort Lauderdale’s canals with Mr. Beaches the corgi

Brace yourself – this adventure may be the one time your dog is not the cutest pooch around. That honor always goes to Mr. Beaches the corgi, who, with his owner Natasha Baker Williams, leads leisurely tours on a paddleboard through Fort Lauderdale ’s famous canals. SUP PUP offers several different tours, spanning sunrise, sunset, kid-friendly (those aged between two and six years old can paddle with a parent), and even yoga-infused experiences. There are more water adventures in other parts of the state. In Key West , you can em-bark (sorry...) on a similar escapade with Lazy Dog Adventures . In Marion County, Get Up and Go Kayaking and Rainbow River Kayak Adventures have various packages for you and your pup. West Palm Beach is the destination of choice for pampered puppies

For smaller pups, the waterfront and luxurious The Ben in Downtown West Palm Beach will not only pamper your pooch but will provide photo opportunities of a lifetime. Dog-friendly staples at The Ben include souvenir dog bowls and water pouches and – prepare for cuteness overload – a white doggie robe you can dress them in. As you order room service, there’s even a section of doggie morsels for your pooch.

The doggy love at The Ben seems to come naturally. The property, which opened in 2020, was named after the local Ben Trovato Estate that was previously owned by author Byrd Spilman Dewey, who wrote a best-selling book about her dog, Bruno. Throughout the property, see how many paintings and statues of Bruno you can count – there are a lot.

Down some brewskis and let them off the leash at BrewHound Dog Park + Bar in Jacksonville

This is the dog-park meets beer garden that animal lovers’ dreams are made of. On an acre in Neptune Beach – approximately 15 miles east of Downtown Jacksonville – is BrewHound Dog Park + Bar . There are multiple fenced areas for unleashed shenanigans, while owners can enjoy several local craft beers on tap, specialty coffee offerings from Bold Bean Coffee Roasters and lawn games. Daily, monthly, and annual passes are available. To help keep things peaceful, there’s a “Ruffaree” that upholds the rules of the park.

Start the day with a puppuccino and end it on the beach

With a name like Cups and Pups Coffee , there are no prizes for guessing this is where many dog-friendly mornings in Orlando begin. Tucked minutes north of Orlando’s urban core in the College Park neighborhood, this stone-clad shop with a poppin’ blue door has a Honey Nut Cheerio latte, lavender cold brew, and an adorable dog logo donning all its cups. If you and your pup can’t find a spot to lounge inside, the shop has regular pop-up events throughout the community, too.

For the “tail end” of the day and on the southern tail of Florida, Baker’s Cay Resort in Key Largo is about as pet friendly as it gets. The four-star hotel tucked just north of the Overseas Highway has pet tikis scattered on its beach, pet-friendly menus and even has a director of pet relations, Maya the “Cay-9.” Hit its daily “yappy hour” from 4 to 5pm where your pup can wind down and get as social as you do.

Florida has nearly 1350 miles of coastline, with many pet-friendly beaches dotted along the way. With any dog beach, make sure to note hours, leash requirements, and required vaccinations as they are often patrolled regularly. In Northern Florida, white sand spots with plenty of open space include Atlantic Beach and Jacksonville Beach in Jacksonville, Crescent Beach in St Augustine , and the appropriately titled Dog Beach across from Pier Park in Panama City.

In Central Florida , Smyrna Dunes Park in New Smyrna Beach, Davis Islands Dog Beach in Tampa , and Fort De Soto Dog Beach are the go-tos. South Florida staples include the Fort Lauderdale Canine Beach , Jupiter Beach and Miami Beach’s Haulover Beach Dog Park .

Book a hotel that caters to your four-legged friend

After all the fun in the sun, you and your pup will need a spot to crash, too. In the Florida Panhandle and minutes east of Destin, Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort has miles of walking trails, the pet-friendly Marina Bar & Grill, a dog park, and its own pet resident, Maryann the Macaw.

The Barrymore Hotel in Tampa has its own leashed pet area that is lovingly known as the “Doggie Business Center.” For urban adventures, there are three dog parks within a half-mile of the hotel. East of Tampa, in Orlando, select Walt Disney World resorts have pet-friendly floors and/or sections of hotels, including Port Orleans Riverside Resort , Yacht Club Resort and Art of Animation Resort . Things to Do with Dogs in the Florida Keys

The Florida Keys have quite a few things to do with with dogs and become increasingly more dog-friendly the further south you go.

There are several state parks located throughout the Keys, most don’t have a ton of dog-friendly options, but some do allow dogs on the trails. Dogs are not allowed on the beaches in the state parks.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park , Key Largo – The first underwater park in the US, does not allow dogs on the beach, however you can hike along the many trails and enjoy picnics in the mangroves.

Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park – Saved from development, this state park is home to one of the largest tracts of West Indian tropical hardwood hammock in the US. Visitors can also find 84 protected species of plants and animals.

Leashed dogs are welcome on the six miles of nature trails within the park.

National Key Deer Refuge, Big Pine Key – Unique only to the Florida Keys, Key Deer are the smallest subspecies of North American white-tailed deer. There are a few short trails you can hike with your dog on leash.

Be sure to stay away from the turtle refuge area and watch out for alligators.

Curry Hammock State Park , Marathon Key – The largest uninhabited stretch of land between Key Largo and Big Pine, Key this state park sits on 1000 acres of mangrove swamp, hammocks, and seagrass beds.

Dogs are not allowed on the beaches, but are permitted in the campground.

Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Gardens – This 15-acre garden includes plants native to the Keys, Cuba, and the Caribbean, with a focus of threatened and endangered species. Dogs are welcome on leash.

Sombrero Beach, Marathon Key – This low-key beach is a bit off the tourist trail and features a nice sandy strip you can walk along with your dog. Near MP 50.

Coco Plum Beach, Marathon – One of the best dog-friendly beaches in the Keys, Coco Plum has a mile of sandy beaches for your pup and shallow water in which they can play.

There are plenty of pet-friendly accommodation options in the Florida Keys, ranging from budget to quite luxurious, depending on your preference.

One of the top beach destinations on the Florida Panhandle is Panama City Beach. It is known for its crystal quartz sand that is derived from the Appalachian mountains, and lucky for vacationers there are 27 miles of pristine white beaches that make up this destination.

However only one section of this coastline allows dogs. The aptly named Dog Beach is located opposite one of the most popular things to do in Panama City Beach , Pier Park.

This stretch of beach is great for four legged friends or dog lovers who just want to play with pups. There are however some important rules, however.

Firstly, all dogs must stay within the confines of Dog Beach – there are signs posted. Also, all dogs must be up to date on their shots, wear ID tags and be kept on a leash or under voice command. There also cannot be more than three dogs per person.

The Suwannee River is a blackwater river that runs over 200 miles through northern Florida. The Suwanee is famous for its unique rust colored hue. This is caused by decaying vegetation releasing tannins into the water.

The river is broken into three regions – the Upper, Middle, and Lower. The most popular section of the river is the Middle Region because of the many crystal-clear natural springs and white sandy beaches.

There are several outfitters along the river that rent canoes and offer shuttle rides. If you like camping, multiday trips are also available. You will need to bring camping gear for you and your dog .

There are several options for camping: State Parks, private campgrounds, and primitive camping. State Parks and private campgrounds have amenities such as bathrooms, showers, fire rings and potable water. The State Parks are free, but are first come first serve and the private campgrounds cost around $20 per night.

Our favorite option is primitive camping. Just pick a spot on the river that looks beautiful to you, set up a tent, start a fire, and enjoy.

Located in the heart of Orlando, Lake Eola Park is easily one of the best dog-friendly things to do in Florida. After all, the park features a 0.9-mile-long sidewalk that encircles the lake and that is the perfect place for dogs and their owners to go for a walk.

Just be sure to keep your dog on a leash since off-leash dogs are not allowed here. Then, you can bring your pet to a local restaurant since many eateries are dog-friendly as well, like The Stubborn Mule.

Winter Garden is a growing town in Central Florida, just minutes from the Orlando theme parks. Established in 1903, what was once huge fields of orange groves is now a booming area complete with wide paved trails, local restaurants, and great craft breweries. Several of these establishments are pet-friendly so your pup can enjoy a beautiful Florida afternoon in the shade while you sip on crisp local brews.

The historic downtown of Winter Garden is home to boutiques, a weekend farmer’s market, and the Crooked Can Brewing Company at Plant Street Market. This craft brewery has been around since 2014 and is a local favorite hangout.

Located under huge moss-covered oak trees, the outside patio and lawn area create the perfect oasis for an afternoon outdoors with your (leashed) dog. And if you get hungry, the Plant Street Market offers foods of all varieties from pizza to sushi, made-to-order donuts and crispy empanadas. It is easy to spend the better part of a day here.

Home State Brewing Co. is a newer and much anticipated addition to Winter Garden. The lawn area is complete with a stage for live music, tons of picnic tables for seating, and Adirondack chairs for lounging away from the crowds under shade trees.

Pets are allowed on a leash and there are several dog water bowls outside. It is the perfect place for an afternoon out with your best furry friends!

I have been living in Florida for 17 years now, and one of the reasons I love it here is that it is a very dog-friendly State. If you love nature and are looking for a pristine beach area with options for plenty of other activities to keep everyone happy, I really recommend visiting Honeymoon Island and enjoying this paradise in Florida.

Honeymoon Island is in the stunning Gulf of Mexico, with 4-miles of pristine beaches with white sand, and it offers natural trails and abundant wildlife. But what I love the most about Honeymoon Island is that it is the favorite place in the world for Pingo and Cooper, my dogs.

There is an amazing dog beach here, one of the top dog beaches in Florida, if not, in the country! Here, the dogs have their own beach, and it sounds like heaven on earth to spend time with my puppies at this gorgeous place.

This is the most beautiful beach on Honeymoon Island in my opinion, and it is nearly empty too. Just make sure you keep your dog on the leash and clean up after your dog. Aside from this, the only other rule here is to have fun and enjoy the best life with your dogs!

Nothing is better than taking your best friend along on vacation. Especially if that best friend has four legs and is furry. Caladesi Island is a great place to explore when planning a dog-friendly trip to Florida.

If you are looking to escape the crowds in Tampa and Clearwater, take the ferry out to beautiful Caladesi Island State Park. It is full of opportunities for relaxing at the Caladesi beach, enjoying the nature trails, Caladesi Island shelling, and swimming. We visited it during our road trip around Florida and consider it to be one of our favorite beaches in Florida.

Dogs are permitted but must be leashed when exploring Caladesi Island State Park. No pets of any kind (including dogs) are allowed on the beach, but they can explore all other portions of the park as long as they remain under their owner’s control. Soak up the sun and have fun exploring the park with your dog!

There is a small cafe on the island but no other amenities. There are lots of pet-friendly hotels in Clearwater , just a few minutes away from where you get on the ferry.

Located in Lake Wales in Central Florida, Bok Tower Gardens is a 250-acre garden with walking trails, a nature playground, and a Singing Tower, where an instrument called a carillon that has 60 bells is played.

Leashed dog-friendly and people-friendly dogs are allowed into Bok Tower Gardens for $5 a day. Bok Tower membership includes entry for up to two dogs. All dogs must stay on the trails and lawns, though digging up the lawn is not allowed.

Dogs are not allowed inside Hammock Hollow, the children’s natural play area. Dogs are also not allowed into Palmetto Cafe, Alexander Discovery Center, El Retiro at Pinewood, or The Shop at Bok. And of course, dog owners must pick up and properly dispose of dog poo.

Palmetto Cafe does offer outdoor seating, and visitors are welcome to bring food into Bok Tower Gardens and have a picnic. Picnic tables are also located outside near the parking lot.

Bok Tower Gardens is a beautiful place to wander along the paths, play in the fields, and listen to the Singing Tower Carillon Concert. In addition to the paths inside the gardens, admission includes a 3.5-mile Pine Ridge Reserve hiking trail.

#10 Spend the Day at Fort De Soto

Visiting Fort De Soto while exploring Florida will make for a fun-filled day. There’s a host of activities, sites, beaches, and more here to enjoy. In fact, you may want to stay longer than a day, which is fine because there’s even camping here too! If you have your pup in tow, no worries, Fort De Soto is dog friendly.

Fort De Soto has around 7 miles of trails you can walk, jog, run, or bike. If you want to rest your legs for the day, there are plenty of ways to do that too. You can bring your kayak or bring a few bucks so you can rent one and get out on the water for the day. You can head to the area between the bay pier and the Gulf pier on the north side of the road to find the kayak rental shack.

For the history buffs, you’ll love wandering around the historical fort here. It was completed in 1900 and was used for military defense and communication.

Lastly, you may have been wondering about the beaches. We are talking about Florida, after all… And here, you’ll find miles of sandy beaches to bask and laze on for as long as you like (or until you turn into a lobster).

If you have a dog, the best beach is the Fort De Soto Dog Beach. It’s one of the only beaches in the area that’s open to dogs and even allows them to be off-leash. You and your furry friend can both freely enjoy the sandy shores! If the off-leash beach isn’t for you, just up from the beach, you’ll find two fenced-off areas for large and small dogs to run around in.

For the rest of the activities mentioned above, your dog is welcome as long as they are well behaved and leashed.

#11 Or Head to Keewaydin Island

The southwest Florida city of Naples has an abundance of beautiful beaches on the Gulf of Mexico that not only draw tourists, but are essential for nesting sea turtles, ground nesting birds, and foraging sea birds.

To protect this fragile ecosystem, only one beach in Naples Florida is dog-friendly , but it’s a good one. Our four-legged friends can go with us to Keewaydin Island, one of the most beautiful beach settings in Florida.

 Located between Naples and Marco Island, the only way to get to Keewaydin Island is by boat. The 8-mile-long beach doesn’t see the crush of seasonal crowds like others, and with over 80% of the island undeveloped, it is one of the most amazing natural environments in southwest Florida.

There are several tour companies that will take you there, anchoring just off the beach. Experienced boaters can rent a boat for the day, but a good alternative is to take the Hemingway Water Shuttle which operates from Marco Island. Be sure to confirm ahead with any tour boat if they will allow your buddy on board.

On the island your dog must be kept on a leash no more than 8-feet long, and of course you must clean up after them on the beach.

#12 Explore the Art Deco Heritage of Miami

Checking out architecture may not be the first thing you think of when you consider dog-friendly things to do in Florida. But Miami is home to a superb collection of art deco buildings and exploring it on foot is a fun way to spend the morning or afternoon with your dog.

Most of the Miami’s art deco buildings are located along Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue and Washington Avenue in South Beach, in between 5th Street and 23rd Street. Ocean Drive runs alongside the beachfront Lummus Park. Dogs are allowed on leash along the paved Beach Walk, but not onto the adjacent sand at South Beach.

I recommend heading out in the morning, before the dog heats up too much, especially during the warmer months. Along the way, stop off at one of the many cafes and bars with outdoor seating, many of which are dog-friendly.

There’s also a wide range of art deco walking tours on offer – check with the operator whether they will allow your leashed pup to tag along.

#13 Head to the Everglades

Going to the Everglades in dog-friendly Florida with a dog might seem like a challenge, but it can be a fantastic trip for you and your furry friend. Just make sure to stick to the rules and consider whether your dog would enjoy their time there.

The park is definitely not suitable for very reactive dogs who might disturb wild life or nervous dogs who could be scared. Make sure to keep your dog on a leash and research individual campsites and other locations to find out if you’ll be allowed to bring them.

Depending on your own dog, you might enjoy an airboat tour, which takes you into the park on the water. Keep in mind that the airboats are loud though, which could be an issue. In our experience, it’s a fun way to spend the afternoon though and you’ll get to see a lot along the way.

Keep in mind that dogs are not permitted on trails in the national park, but most campsites allow them.

#14 Join a Lazy Dog Adventure

One of the most dog-friendly and fun businesses in all of Florida is Lazy Dog Adventures in Key West. Sue Cooper founded Lazy Dog Adventures after escaping a corporate executive job and desiring to do something on the water with her dog.

The Lazy Dog business evolved from a kayak company in 1997 to selling t-shirts to now having the largest number of paddleboards in the Florida Keys. Sue wrote the book, Millionaire in Flip Flops, in 2012.

Lazy Dog Adventures hosts memorable SUP and kayak tours in the southern Florida Keys, along with boat rentals. Not only are dogs permitted on their equipment but they are encouraged! When checking in for your paddling tour, you will surely see at least one dog in the area. Hopefully your tour guide and at least one other guest will have brought their dogs.

The basic paddle tour (kayak or SUP) is an eco-tour between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean (so cool that you are so close to both!) and through a few mangrove tunnels. Along the way, the guide will point out where sharks hide (amazing that they are always in plain sight) and pass around a jellyfish. There are other adventures and surprises you will just have to experience yourself. Bring your dog!

#15 Head to Islands Dog Bar in Key West

When you’re traveling in Key West, Florida with your furry best friend be sure to visit Island Dogs Bar. The motto at this bar is, ‘come as you are,’ and this inviting atmosphere extends to pups as well.

#16 Relax at Zachary Taylor Beach & Park

Fort Zachary Taylor Park in Key West, Florida is a fantastic place to spend an afternoon with your dog, going for a walk by the water and enjoying the views.

Yor dog will have to stay on the leash and has to be well behaved, which you need to keep in mind. Admission is $6 per vehicle which can include up to eight passengers and pedestrians cost $2.50 per person.

You can sit at one of the picnic areas or grab a snack from the small kiosk. The early mornings when not too many other people are around are highly recommended.

Keep in mind that you can’t go onto the beach itself with your dog, which is a rule meant to keep it clean. This is a downside of coming to this park, but you can still enjoy the paths and surrounding greenery with your pet at this dog-friendly destination in Florida.

Not every dog mom or dad has an easy time leaving their pup behind (hi!). When it comes to summer road trips , why not bring Buddy along for the ride?

For pups that do well in the car (my Frenchie Jaxson loves soothing jams and good vibrations), road trips are a great way to include your canine companion in your adventures.

Unlike air travel, most vehicles provide plenty of room for your pooch. It also provides freedom and flexibility to plan and pivot as you see fit, along with increasingly appealing options when it comes to dog-friendly accommodations .

Still on the fence? We've broken down everything you need to know, prepare and pack so you can bring your favorite tail-wagger along on your next exciting road trip.

Buckle up Fido

The term "precious cargo" applies to more than just the little ones. Ensure your four-legged friend is safe and secure before you leave your driveway. Lucky for you, there's a plethora of options that cater to your dog's security while on the road.

Secure a seat belt

My personal preference is a dog-friendly seat belt, including an actual harness seat belt or seat belt restraints like the EZYDOG. If your dog does well cozied up on the actual seat of your car, this is a great choice. Make sure the seat belt is tightly fastened to the dog and that it properly clicks into the seat belt jack before you get moving.

Use a car seat or booster

Yes, doggy car seats are a thing. These typically also buckle into the seat belt and can be tethered to the dog's harness or collar for a second level of security. Or you can opt for a booster seat like the Kurgo , which also buckles in and offers a bit more space while keeping your doggo in place.

Fasten a hammock

Looking for a cool lounge vibe for your pup by creating a padded cradle to keep your dog contained? Strap up a hammock — also great for keeping dog hair and treat crumbs contained. However, this option is best paired with a dog seat belt because the hammock alone won't secure your pup.

Set up a crate

If you have a larger vehicle with plenty of breathing room and your dog does well crated, this may work for you. Keep in mind you will need to find a way to secure the soft crate so it stays in place. Consider a travel crate that is impact-safe. Note that crating may not be the best option for anxious pups.

Build a barrier

If you have a large dog and an even larger cargo area, you can secure a barrier made of netting or metal bars. This also works if you have more than one dog and a designated section of the vehicle reserved just for them. The cargo bars may keep the dogs from traveling within the vehicle, but they won't secure your dog, so use a seat belt.

Create a comfort zone

Dogs sleep an average of 14 hours per day, which means once safely fastened, your pooch needs a comfortable place to rest and relax while you're taking in the scenery. Make sure your dog has enough space to stand up, turn around and adjust as needed.

A good rule of thumb is to provide a space as large as their standard dog bed. In fact, taking your dog's actual bed is one easy solution. Don't want to take the regular dog bed on the road? Buy one for the trip and let your pup cuddle up in prep so they know exactly what to expect on departure day. Bonus: they'll have infused the bed with not only their scent but familiar ones from inside your home.

Help your dog feel cozy by adding a blanket or a few soft toys.

Breaking down the basics

With so much packing and planning, don't forget the bare necessities, as well as toys and chews that will keep your dog happy throughout your journey.

Necessary accessories

Typically, these include a collar/harness (with current ID tag) and leash, pet waste bags and food and water bowls. Collapsible silicone bowls are also handy and great for excursions.

Soft, plush toys are the safest for road travel. Consider soft toys your dog cannot tear into easily. Perhaps leave the squeaker toys at home, as well as rope toys – both are choking hazards, and no incessant squeaking may preserve your zen mode.

Bones and chews

Stock up on bones, chews, bully sticks and rawhides. However, make sure you stow them for long stops or once you are at your lodging accommodations – these are choking hazards, too. Fillable cones like rubber Kong toys also fall into this category.

Outdoor toys

If your pup loves playing fetch, make sure to pack tennis balls, frisbees and ball launchers for fenced stops and dog parks.

Food, glorious dog food

Everybody's got to eat, including Bowser. Dogs consume two kinds of foods: dry and wet. The most convenient food is dry kibble. Many brands sell 5-pound bags, which makes it easy to grab one (don't forget the measuring cup) and keep it with you for a long haul. If you're taking a shorter trip, you can portion the food ahead of time into meals in reusable silicone bags.

In terms of wet food, it should be as easy to purchase the cans or packets you need. However, be cautious of temperature advisories. For example, if your pup takes wet food (or freeze-dried food) that should be stored at or below a certain temperature, you will need to make this accommodation. Pack a small cooler dedicated solely to your dog's food.

If you forget your dog's food, run out or thought you'd be able to purchase it when you arrived at your destination but can't find it, buy a food with a similar ingredient list and arm yourself with one secret ingredient: organic, canned pumpkin.

"The fiber in the pumpkin may help avoid any digestive disturbances the new food may cause," offers Johnna Devereaux, clinical pet nutritionist and director of nutrition and wellness for Bow Wow Labs.

Don't forget about dog treats. You should include these in your food inventory. Also, consider packing some extra to reward your pup for being a good boy or girl throughout the journey.

Additionally, make sure to pack your pup's vitamins and supplements. It's important to keep up with your dog's regular nutritional routine – the road is no exception. If your dog tends to have a nervous belly when traveling, consider ginger root as a solution. "Ginger root may help calm and unsettle stomach and is best given just before departure," Devereaux suggests.

TPG tip : Store the dog food and treats out of range from where your pup will be seated in your vehicle so they aren't tempted by the familiar scent.

Pack an emergency stash

Just like you packed yourself an emergency sustenance stash of protein bars and trail mix, you should the same for your loyal companion. There are a lot of unknowns associated with the open road. You could be delayed by weather or a car issue, and you will need to prepare extra dog food just in case. (I like to pack two additional days of food, at minimum.)

Splurge a little

Obviously, stopping for special treats and indulgent meals is one of the best parts of a road trip. When your pup accompanies you, they should be no exception to the rule. Once you've carved out your route and itinerary, do your due diligence to find some pitstops for Spot. (While the occasional Starbucks puppuccino can be fun, it's best not to make that a daily treat.)

Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World : Once you're done devouring Mickey Mouse pops and jumbo turkey legs, order K-9 crudite, the hot diggity dog (scrambled eggs, rice and veal stock), and frozen peanut butter and banana bites for the doggy.

Lazy Dog Restaurants : In Florida, Virginia, Texas and Colorado, this casual dining chain services pup-friendly brown rice bowls with grilled hamburger or grilled chicken.

Don't forget the H2O

It goes without saying that water is a necessity for summer road-tripping dogs and humans alike. Even though you may have done your research about your trip ahead, it's likely you won't know much about the water quality at each stop.

According to Illinois-based veterinarian Dr. Allison Pepich, your dog needs a rough estimate of at least 1 ounce of water per 0.5-1 pound of body weight. For example, a 30-pound dog would need between 15-30 ounces of water per day at a minimum, but it could be more depending on their fluid losses throughout the day.

"If they will not drink water while in the car, giving them water at rest stops throughout the journey is recommended," Dr. Pepich said. "The more panting, activity, or just general fluid loss that your pet has, the more water they will need."

Always store a few extra gallons of water in your car — in a cooler is even better.

Avoiding the dehydration danger zone

As the weather warms up through the summer months, Dr. Pepich says dehydration and overheating could be a concern during extended car travel.

"If you feel that your pet is experiencing either, the safest option is to get them to the nearest veterinary clinic for evaluation," she said. "Pets can often mask signs that they are not feeling well, especially if they are already anxious from travel. Watch for signs of reduced energy, poor appetite, not drinking well, tacky mucus membranes (gums), or heavy panting."

A normal temperature for a dog is between 100-102 degrees Fahrenheit, and the most accurate way to check this is with a rectal thermometer – add this to your first-aid kit (more on that below), according to Dr. Pepich.

In order to avoid dehydration and overheating, Dr. Pepich says never to leave your pet alone in the car during travel. Also, keep the car at a comfortable temperature while traveling. If you spend time outdoors, make sure your pet has a cool, shady area to go to for rest. Dr. Pepich also recommends paying extra attention to breeds that may be at significant risk for heat stress. These are typically brachycephalic dogs like French bulldogs, pugs, shih tzus, boxers, Boston terriers and others.

Meds and first aid

Before you head out, make sure you have medication and first-aid options for your pup, too. The Red Cross offers a comprehensive list of what to pack , which includes many household items that will come in handy. Some include latex gloves, gauze, tweezers, a muzzle, rubbing alcohol, antibiotic ointment, a baby-dose syringe, 3% hydrogen peroxide, an emergency blanket, sterile saline wash, petroleum jelly, cotton swabs and needle-nose pliers. As mentioned above, make sure to pack a rectal thermometer for temperature checks.

De-stressing your doggo

Additionally, take extra precautions if your dog tends to get easily stressed.

"There are a few over-the-counter products that can be used for stress reduction during car trips," Dr. Pepich said. "My favorite products are Rescue Remedy and Adaptil pheromone products. You can also use CBD products, but I've found success varies considerably across different products."

If your dog gets carsick, Dr. Pepich recommends using an anti-nausea medication or one aimed at treating motion sickness may help calm their car-related anxiety. Before your trip, discuss prescription anxiety medications for car travel with your vet, "though the specific product prescribed may vary greatly depending on your dog's needs," according to Dr. Pepich.

For the record

Whether digitized or hard copies, keep your dog's latest vaccination records on hand. If your dog is microchipped, make sure you have the ID number and registration information before you leave. Confirm you also have a collar with an ID tag that displays your most up-to-date contact information for peace of mind.

TPG tip : Work in advance to help your dog get comfortable in the car. If there are signs of car-related anxiety, employ a trainer to help desensitize your pup to car trips.

Keep 'em clean

Grooming on the go can be a pain, so make sure your car is stocked with the essentials. You can very easily craft a handy DIY travel grooming kit with these necessities:

Shampoo : Whether your furry friend enjoys regular puppy spa appointments or bath time at home, it's important to pack a bottle of your pup's shampoo – just in case. If your hotel or lodging doesn't happen to have a bathtub or sink to refresh Sparky, opt for a dry shampoo. Test out any new products in advance so you aren't dealing with any unpleasant surprises like allergies or skin reactions.

Wipes : Pet wipes can be a lifesaver when traveling. They're great for muddy paws at a rest stop to avoid caking dirt onto your leather seats and a full wipe-down from outdoor dander, pollen and the elements. Try these out at home before the road trip and opt for scented or unscented based on what works best for the doggy.

Nail clippers : Either a manual tool or an electronic device, a set of dog-friendly nail clippers are handy. Just like human nails, dog nails and dewclaws (essentially the thumbs and big toes) can split while adventuring and be painful for your pup.

Toothbrush : It's important to stay up on your doggy's dental hygiene. Grab a small travel-size toothbrush for longer trips.

Scissors : While you may pack these for your own emergency kit, you can also use them to remove fur tangles on long-haired dogs.

Dog waste bags : Do the math on the length of your trip and how many times your dog does his or her business per day to determine how many poop bag rolls you need. Pack a couple of extra rolls for any surprise messes along the way.

Don't let hitting the road with your favorite furry friend intimidate you. There may be plenty of prep work, but once you're en route, it will be worth it.

You’ve been dreaming about it forever, and it’s finally happening … you’re planning a pet friendly road trip! With a little preparation, your trip will come off without a hitch.

You can almost feel the wind in your hair (or fur). And just imagining all the new sights and scents along the way is giving you goosebumps. It’s going to be fantastic! But before you hit the next doggy road trip, there’s some work to do. We’ll walk you through the steps to planning a pet friendly road trip that you’ll never forget.

Steps To Planning A Pet Friendly Road Trip

Step 1: choose your destination.

The first thing to decide when planning your road trip is where to go! If you’re moving, visiting family or friends, or traveling for some other purpose, the end point of your trip might already be set.

If you’re planning a vacation and the options are wide open, choosing a destination can feel overwhelming. Start by imagining your perfect getaway. Do you see yourself relaxing on the beach ? Hiking a mountain trail ? Admiring the landscape at a pet friendly national park ? Picturing yourself in your ideal location will help you determine the “goal” of your trip.

Step 2: Envision Your Route

It’s totally old-school, but I believe the best way to take a cross country road trip is to plan the road trip on a paper map. So pick up a road atlas or grab maps of the states you’ll be visiting!

Step 3: Plan Your Stops

The most common mistake people make when planning a road trip is trying to do too much. It’s a problem with the way our brains work. We find the most popular 1,000 things to do, pack it all into a one-week itinerary, make the reservations, and then freak out when things go sideways. That’s no way to spend a vacation!

Flexibility is key when you’re traveling with pets. The weather might not be ideal on the day you planned to hike. Or, you might want nothing more than to lay on the beach on the day you scheduled a guided walking tour. So, tread lightly when planning your stops.

Unless your trip will be ruined if an event doesn’t work out, think twice before making reservations. From dinner to kayaking – you can often call at the last minute and find availability. And with no deposits to lose, you’re free to spend more time, leave early, or add a new discovery to your itinerary.

While we recommend underestimating how much you can do, we encourage you to keep your trusty map handy. If you’re fortunate enough to have some free time, check your map to see what’s close and allow serendipity to fill the gap in the most spectacular way.

Step 4: Book Where You’ll Stay

One thing you might want to book in advance is where you’ll staying during your road trip. Reserving pet friendly hotels, vacation rentals, or campgrounds can be a tricky proposition, and not having your accommodations lined up can cause stress.

As you review the map you’ve been marking up, calculate the time it will take to drive between different points along the route. Add some time for bathroom breaks, eating, and filling the car with gas. Also consider the time you’d like to spend at attractions and rest stops along the way.

Then, using all of this information, decide where you want to end each day of your road trip and circle those locations on the map.

Do you accept pets?

Hotel and vacation rental pet polices change quickly, so it’s important to verify that the property you’re considering still welcomes pets.

Do you charge additional pet fees?

This is where pet friendliness really shows. Some hotels welcome pets to stay for free, while others heap on additional charges that can add up to more than the nightly room rate!

Be sure you have a clear understanding of the cost before making your reservation. Determine whether the fee is per night or for the entire stay, and whether it’s per pet or fixed regardless of the number of pets. Also ask if any portion of the fee is refundable if the hotel room isn’t damaged during your stay.

Are there any weight or breed restrictions?

It’s common for accommodations to impose weight restrictions. If you’ve found an option that’s a perfect in every way – except that your pup is a little too big – ask if they’ll make an exception. Most hotels have a little wiggle room in their size limitations and will try to accommodate you when asked.

How many pets are allowed per room?

When you travel with multiple pets, this is an important consideration.

What pet amenities does the hotel offer?

The most important amenity is always a convenient, grassy pet relief area. But some pet friendly hotels also provide treats at check-in, pet beds and bowls in the room, doggy room service menus, spa treatments, and pet sitting services. It’s always nice when your hotel has a restaurant with a pet friendly patio. And some dog friendly hotels even host a “yappy hour” in the lobby each evening! Deciding how much to pamper your pet is entirely up to you. Another nice perk is a nearby dog park!

Can pets be left unattended?

Determining whether you can leave your pet alone in the room while you step out for something to eat or to run an errand helps you plan appropriately.

Hotels are primarily concerned with two things when pets are left unattended: damage to the room, and barking that disturbs other guests. To alleviate those concerns, some hotels require crates for pets when you’re away. And following our tips for a quiet stay will help ease any worries about barking.

Are some areas off limits to pets?

Pets are generally not allowed in breakfast areas, restaurants, pools, and fitness rooms. Ask up front and be sure you can live with the pet policies and restrictions.

Step 5: Prepare Your Vehicle

With your route planned and your accommodations booked, the next step is making sure your car is “pet ready.” Coming home together safely is the most important part of any trip, so be sure you have a way of securing your pet while you’re traveling.

A crate, carrier, or car harness will prevent your pet from making an unannounced visit to check the view from the back seat or your lap while you’re driving, and will protect you both in case of an accident.

Step 6: Talk To Your Vet

When planning your road trip, call your veterinarian to confirm that your pet’s vaccinations are up to date and discuss any possible health concerns that might exist where you’ll be traveling.

Also ask about possible remedies for car sickness, diarrhea and restlessness – just in case!

Finally, consider having your pet micro-chipped, or update your contact information if your pet’s already chipped. It would be a nightmare, but pets do become separated from their people while traveling. Shelters, animal hospitals, veterinary clinics and humane societies have scanners that read the chips, so they can quickly notify you of your pet’s recovery.

Step 7: Polish Your P’s and Q’s

You can avoid embarrassing and potentially dangerous situations by teaching your dog safe and reliable Come, Heel, Quiet, and Settle commands. Practice is the key!

Before setting out on your road trip, test your progress somewhere with a lot of distractions, like an outdoor café, beach, or dog park.

Step 8: Gather The Gear

Pets need a lot of stuff when they go on vacation! This checklist will help you gather the things you’ll want to take along for your furry friend.

Packing the right gear for your pets is important for any pet friendly road trip.

Food and Treats And, for canned food, don’t forget the can opener!
All medications, vitamins, and supplements
Drinking Water – If your pet’s stomach is easily upset, take along drinking water from home.
Food and Water Bowls
Your pet’s bed and a couple of toys
Current Identification Tag – Include your cell phone number or other phone number where you can be reached while you are away.
Leash – Many places require your pet be on a leash no longer than six feet. If you want to give your pet more freedom and exercise, but not risk being off-leash, pack a long-line leash as well.
Litter box and litter for cats
A roll of paper towels for muddy paws and other messes
An old towel in case of rain or after swimming
First aid kit
Proof of vaccinations
Medical records – Scan the documents to a USB drive and you’ll have them in case your pet gets sick or injured.
Photo of your pet – In case you get separated, have a current photo handy so you can create posters quickly.

Step 9: Stick To The Routine

Whether they show it or not, many pets feel anxious when they’re away from home. You can help relieve their stress by sticking to your pet’s normal feeding and exercise schedule.

Set an alarm to remind you when meal time is approaching. And plan time each day to let your dog stretch, run, and burn off some energy. Isn’t that what being on vacation is all about, after all?!

Setting aside time for a nice walk before you hop in the car and another stroll at the end of the day means you’ll have less time behind the wheel. But experiencing the places you stay with your pet is part of the fun of road tripping together!

Making more frequent stops is also part of traveling with your pet. Figure on taking a break from driving every two hours or so to let your pup stretch his legs, sniff what’s new, and get a drink of water.

Step 10: Roll With It

No matter how much effort you put into planning your pet friendly road trip, things will sometimes go wrong. When they do, you can choose to let it ruin your day, or see it as a new adventure.

Pets are great teachers in that they’re never attached to the outcome. Where you end up, how many places you see along the way … it’s all irrelevant to your pet. He just wants to be with you and have fun.

If you can embrace that mindset, you’ll see every detour as an opportunity, and you and your pet will grow closer for the experience.

Remember To Be Considerate

When you travel with your pet, you are an ambassador for all pet travelers – so make a good impression! Abide by the rules of the places you visit, always keep your pet on-leash, and clean up after him.

The inconsiderate behavior of a few can lead to unfortunate repercussions for future pet travelers and local pet owners.

All this advance preparation takes some time, but it’s the secret to planning a pet friendly road trip that’s enjoyable for everyone. And, most importantly, you’ll be making memories with your canine companion best friend that will last a lifetime.

Great Florida Road Trip

Dog-Friendly Kayaking Adventures in Florida

One of the first things I did when I brought home Calypso some 15 years ago was take her kayaking on the Weeki Wachee. Still puppy-sized, she curled up on the bow of my kayak and took a nap. That is, until she saw a mullet swim past the kayak – then she jumped in and tried to catch it. When she realized she couldn’t, she swam to the side of my kayak and put her paw on it, asking to get back in the boat.

Thus began the start of a great adventure for her – and for me. I didn’t take my last dog, a wonderful liver-spot Dalmatian named Madison, kayaking with me, for a couple of reasons. One, she was exceptionally high strung, and two, I didn’t get a kayak until she was seven, and I didn’t think she’d easily take to it.

I didn’t make that same mistake with Calypso: From day one, she’s gone pretty much everywhere with me, including kayaking and boating. That whole “paw on the side of the ‘yak to get back in” thing? Yeah, she mastered that. One of my many part-time jobs was as a kayak guide, and one day, my boss and I were scouting different locations on our paddle boards. Calypso got bored with me, jumped off, swam over to him, and put her paw on his board. I guess she wanted a change of pace.

Dog-Friendly Kayaking Adventures: Mostly Salt

We have paddling rules: After a near-disaster on the Hillsborough (she saw gator hatchlings and tried to go after them, which resulted in my yanking her back in the kayak by her tail and stuffing her under the bow), Calypso doesn’t kayak on many freshwater rivers unless they’re crystal-clear (Chassahowitzka, yes; Hillsborough, no). She doesn’t sleep on the bow anymore. And, if we’re in saltwater, I always let her jump out and swim the last 15 feet to shore – and then roll in the sand. It’s tradition.

Dog-Friendly Kayaking Adventures in Florida: Bigger Dogs

When we adopted Banyan, neither Barry nor I knew how a 2-year-old dog who had spent almost the whole of her life in a shelter would handle being on the water, so we didn’t push her – it took enough effort to get her to not get physically ill when we had people over for dinner.

But during the pandemic, we tried her on a kayak while holed up in a cottage in Islamorada. Turns out, as long as her person – that’d be Barry, not me – goes with, she’s fine.

For Banyan’s first paddle, we used a resort sit-on-top, so when we tried her in our cockpit-style kayak, we weren’t sure how it would work.

Turns out it worked just fine. Fine, that is, as long as Barry is there with her. She climbs in, waits for him, and off they go, like she was born for it. She’s living her best life.

Dog-Friendly Kayaking Adventures in Florida: Not These Places

Bottom line? There are some places you don’t bring a dog in Florida: gator-infested waters, Mar-a-Lago, beaches with active seabird nests. But there are plenty of places where your furry BFF will love to go: Saltwater paddles, beaches without specific dog exclusions (be reasonable and don’t let them trounce nests, please), bike rides… you get the idea.

My point is, don’t assume that your dog won’t love it just because she’s never done it. In my experience, the important thing to your dog is that she gets to do it with you.

As the weather becomes nicer, pet owners are considering going on a road trip with their dog for the first time. A dog road trip planner is key to keeping things organized when preparing to hit the road.

Does he need to use the potty every hour or so? Does he have to drink from his water bowl every few hours? You’ll know how to better prepare for longer road trips if you do a quick practice round.

Get the Right Safety Gear

When you’re driving, your dog should not be loose in the car. Not only is it distracting, but if you get into an accident, he could get seriously hurt. It’s best to restrain your dog in a carrier in the backseat that connects to a seat belt. The carrier needs to be big enough that your dog can stand up, turn around, and lie down to get comfortable.

You should also bring a dog life jacket if you’re going to be taking your pooch to the water. It’ll give you some peace of mind that your canine best friend is safe when he’s taking a dip.

Bring a Pet First Aid Kit

You never know when you’re going to run into trouble. If you have a pet first aid kit on hand, you can be more prepared if disaster strikes. In your pet first aid kit , you might include:

adhesive tape
saline eye solution
absorbent gauze pads
antibiotic ointment
alcohol wipes
an extra supply of his medicine, supplements, and dog food
3% hydrogen peroxide (in case you need to make your dog vomit)

Additionally, if your dog gets motion sick/car sickness, pack anti-nausea drugs and antihistamines . Just make sure you ask your veterinarian which ones are best for your pooch and how much to give them each time he’s acting sick. Keeping your windows rolled down a few inches should also help with the motion sickness.

Save Space: Take Portable Food and Water Bowls

When you’re creating your road trip planner, you might not think about how much space you’re going to have in your car. If you’re going on a long trip, it’s likely packed to the gills. Save some room and bring collapsible food and water bowls that you can easily store as well as hook onto your leash for walks.

Never Keep Him in a Hot Car

A dog-friendly road trip is not dog-friendly at all if you leave him in a hot car . If it’s warm outside, your car can quickly heat up. Even if it’s just 70 degrees Fahrenheit, the car can become intolerable for your dog.

On the flip side, temperatures lower than 35 degrees Fahrenheit are unsafe, too. If you’re going on a road trip with your loved one or friend, ask them to stay with your dog or walk them around when you have to leave your car. This is a good time for your dog to pee and poop and get a drink from his water bowl as well.

Make Frequent Potty Stops

Normally, dogs need to pee every four to six hours . However, when you’re on the road, your dog may become dehydrated more easily and drink more water to make up for it. This means he’ll need frequent potty breaks.

It’s a good idea to pull over at a rest stop and stretch frequently, too, so you can stay alert behind the wheel. When you need to refuel at a gas station, let your dog out for a little bit. Your pooch will appreciate getting a little walk and exploring different places along the way.

Don’t forget to pack extra poop bags for those bathroom breaks!

Find Local Dog Parks, Dog-Friendly Trails, and Dog Beaches

When making the perfect road trip planner, don’t forget to find dog-friendly destinations and fun pit stops. For instance, you could log onto BringFido to locate nearby pet-friendly restaurants, dog parks, and dog beaches. You could also check out GoPetFriendly , which has suggestions for things to do with your dog along the road, such as going to the Grand Canyon in Arizona or a campsite in Colorado.

If you’re going cross-country, you could visit national parks and national forests – just make sure they are dog-friendly before booking your reservation. Since there are wild animals running around state parks, you should keep your dog on a short leash at all times and not veer off the people- and dog-friendly hiking trails.

If you’re going to be hiking when it’s getting darker out, putting a reflective vest on your pup is a good idea. You could also put a hiking backpack on your dog to ensure he gets enough exercise and is sufficiently tired out before hopping back into the car.

If you are visiting watering holes, get a dog life jacket for safety. The best dog life vests will have adjustable straps and sufficient padding for a secure fit.

See if you can plan your gas station stops along your route where your pup can stretch his legs, too.

Have a Copy of His Medical Records on Hand

Just in case there’s an emergency, you should bring along a copy of your pup’s medical records. It’s a good idea to store them on your phone and have hard copies because you could end up in an area where you have bad cell phone service.

The medical records should include a list of vaccinations your dog has gotten, which may be necessary if you’re staying in an Airbnb or other pet-friendly accommodations that need to see them. Make sure you save your primary veterinarian’s phone number so you can get in touch with any questions.

You may also want to think about staying in areas where there is at least one pet hospital nearby so that you can get emergency treatment should something happen.

Tip: Consider getting a microchip with updated contact information put in if your dog is prone to ‘pulling a Houdini’.

Find Pet-Friendly Accommodations

There are a number of hotel chains that provide pet-friendly accommodations for you and your canine best friend. They include Aloft Hotels, Best Western, Comfort Inn, Clarion Inn & Suites, Courtyard Marriott, Holiday Inn Express, Red Roof Inn, and Sheraton.

When searching for a pet-friendly hotel for your cross-country road trip, you should click the “pets allowed” option on sites like Hotels.com and TripAdvisor to filter out the results. Some dog-friendly hotels may even provide a dog bed for you!

Even if a place is dog friendly, it doesn’t mean that there won’t be a pet fee. Keep an eye out for these fees in their pet policies so there are no surprises when checking in. Be sure to clean up messes that have been left behind before checking out.

Ensuring Your Doggy Road Trip Goes Smoothly

Prior to hitting the road, make sure you follow these travel tips and create a pet-friendly road trip planner prior. Take frequent breaks, hydrate, pack his favorite toys, and overall, keep your dog safe. Then you can pretty much guarantee that you and your furry friend are going to have an amazing time together out on the open road.

The Ultimate Florida Road Trip Map

St. Augustine

There are so many things to do in St Augustine Florida , it’s an amazing way to start your ultimate Florida road trip. We recommend 2 nights, but really you could stay a week. If you are staying 2 days visit:

St. Augustine Alligator Farm

You can spend hours here exploring all the different alligators, feeding them, and watching the shows. Plus for only $5 you can take your picture with a baby alligator!

Fountain of Youth

It seemed like such a tourist trap to us, but really there is more to it than just the fountain. The grounds are beautiful and filled with multiple history lessons – including the Timucuan Village and seeing them fire a cannon! The road to get to the Fountain of Youth is also amazing with a canopy of old oaks covering the street. Needless to say it is worth it to go.

St. George Street

You can end your day by visiting St. George Street. It is filled with restaurants and one of our favorite stops: Hyppo for homemade popsicles! They even had a champagne flavored one.

And yes, those are our dogs. St. Augustine is super dog friendly!

We also recommend checking out Historic Tours of America , they offer great packages and other ideas of things to do in the area. The trolley was an amazing way to get around town and really learn a lot about St. Augustine. It also meant we didn’t have to drive and find parking everywhere we went.

Or you could check out this trolley tour that takes you to three of St. Augustine’s museums: The Old Jail, St. Augustine History Museum and The Oldest Store Museum!

For even more history, consider visiting the Castillo de San Marcos Monument, booking the Old Jail Tour, or visiting the Oldest Store Museum!

Compass RV Resort offers another good location in St. Augustine with only a 15-20 minute drive to get downtown. This campground also has two dog parks!

Another option is Ocean Grove RV Resort that is about 7 miles from the historic district. This campground includes a boat launch, restaurant, golf cart rental, and more!

Hotel: Hilton St. Augustine Historic Bayfront

We did not stay in a hotel when we were there but given where this hotel is located we think it would be a great place to stay. If you stay here you could walk to a lot of the downtown attractions or easily get on the trolley.

You can’t come to Florida and not go to Orlando. Plan on at least 3 days for all of these things to do in Orlando, Florida :

Magic Kingdom

Universal Studios

We had put off going to Universal Studios until our kids were a little older. When our youngest turned 6 we figured it was a good time to go! We had an absolute blast and loved every minute of it. There was plenty to do with younger kids and the older ones could go on almost all of the rides.

We also had a great time going to Volcano Bay and highly recommend if you are going to Universal plan a day at Volcano Bay!

Ideally we would recommend 3 days to explore Universal. 1 day for each park and 1 day for Volcano Bay. There are 2 parks in Universal – Universal Studios VS Islands of Adventure we recommend visiting both and have done both in one day if you are short on time. Go tubing at Kelly Rock Springs and visit Downtown Disney. This has been one of our favorite things. The water is crystal clear and with all the beautiful greenery and perfect water it is a can’t miss destination!

You start from the top of the spring on an inner tube and float all the way down to the beach. AMAZING!

If your kids are 12 or younger we recommend also making a stop at LEGOLAND Florida for a day. The size of the park is so much easier to manage then Disney World and in a day you can pretty much do every ride and see the shows.

If you are interested in visiting Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld Orlando or LEGOLAND Florida, you may want to consider using the Orlando CityPass ! Escape Game

If you haven’t checked out the Escape Game yet, you are missing out! At Escape Game Orlando you can test your teamwork and sleuthing skills by trying to escape from one of eight themed rooms with your team or family in under an hour. It is a ton of fun for the whole family and a great teamwork exercise as well!

Orlando Museum of Art

If you are looking to take in some culture or expand your horizons a bit while in Orlando, check out the Museum of Art! Take a look at the museum’s calendar of events and see if there is something exciting happening in the art gallery, or just stop in anytime and take a tour!

You could also plan a trip over to the Kennedy Space Center and maybe catch a launch, or Swim or Snorkel with the Manatees!

Where to stay:

Luxury Villa : If you are looking to kick back with a big group or want to experience a luxury vacation home check out the Luxury Villas! We stayed here for a week with friends and it was AMAZING!!

Orlando RV Resort With our RV we always stay at the Thousand Trails Orlando. Its proximity to all of the things we listed above is great and you are a little ways away from the hustle and bustle of Orlando. If you want a more glamorous place to stay than Disney’s Fort Wilderness is for you. We spent a day there and it was pretty awesome and we know other RVers who call it their FAVORITE place to stay in the whole US.

Camp Margaritaville – For a fun vacation style RV resort stay here!

If you want to stay outside Orlando, Mill Creek RV Resort is in Kissimmee – only about 30 minutes from the Orlando theme parks. Also, all of these sites are on concrete patios!

Another option outside Orlando is in Davenport. Only 25-30 minutes from the Orlando theme parks, Mouse Mountain RV Resort offers a selection of standard and premium sites.

If you want to splurge stay at the Fort Wilderness Resort ! We haven’t stayed here but went and visited once and it was amazing.

Embassy Suites on International Drive If you are looking for a hotel and want to give your kids a special treat then stay at the Legoland Hotel . They have gifts for your kids once they complete a scavenger hunt in your room, all the legos you want to play with in the lobby and some amazing shows.

Then of course there are all the Disney properties. To be honest we always look for ways to cut costs so we can take more trips and do more things. In that mindset we stayed at an Embassy Suites that provide breakfast was close to Disney – so that is always an option too.

From here you could head to our next stop Miami or make a stop in Jupiter. There are a lot of great things to do in Jupiter, Florida and it is a more under the radar location!

Little Havana

Miami has an amazing Cuban presence and vibe to it. Head into Little Havana and grab some ice cream at Azucar and then walk down the street to see if you can hear any cuban music coming from the bar/restaurants and do a little dance in the street.

Wynwood Art District in Miami on The Ultimate Florida Road Trip

Next head into Wynwood and check out the amazing artwork on the sides of the building. This is an up and coming area in Miami and has an awesome vibe to it! You can also park and get out and walk around Wynwood Walls to check out the artwork and restaurants in the area.

South Beach

Go to South Beach and see what South Beach is really like! We didn’t get a chance to get out of our car due to how busy it was. But it was cool to drive down A1A and take in everything South Beach has to offer.

Miami Seaquarium

We had a great time exploring the Miami Seaquarium and all the exhibits. Grab your Seaquarium tickets here ! Don’t forget to check out Miami Beach while you are there!

RV Park: Miami Everglades RV Park

We stayed at the Encore RV park. We had to drive a ways to get into downtown Miami – but it was still worth it since the RV park was so nice and quiet. Plus they had a great pool, hot tub and mini golf course!

Florida Keys and Key West

Ever wonder the distance from Miami to Key West ? Well, it’s about 160 miles. Crazy, right?! That 3 hour drive could be a road trip in itself! Well, now you know the distance from Miami to Key West , on your Florida Keys Road Trip , check these amazing stops:

Feed the Tarpons

Stop at Robbie’s and feed the Tarpons. It is a really cool experience. For just a few bucks, you get a bucket of fish that you then feed to the large tarpon that hang out by the pier.

So fun! Just look out for the Pelicans, they’re savage!

Grab lunch at Sunset Grille

This is a cool restaurant on the water that has a pool! It is a great place to stop, eat lunch and take a swim before heading on. Make sure to check out their Key Lime Pie! Once you are done swimming walk up the stairs that go under the bridge and walk out on the famous 7 Mile Bridge.

7 Mile Bridge

You can’t avoid it on your way down to Key West, but I wanted to add it so you can be sure you have your camera ready. I love this bridge and the idea of the water surrounding you on all sides!

While you are on the way to Key West, you might want to check out Long Key State Park! Here is a video of our time there:

Key West – Fort Zachary Taylor

Fort Zachary Taylor Beach in Key West on The Ultimate Florida Road Trip

Explore the fort and spend time at the beach enjoying the Atlantic Ocean! The beach doesn’t have soft white sand beaches, most in the Keys don’t due to the reef but that’s OK. The color of the water and the ability to snorkel right off the beach make up for it! There is also a small restaurant here where you can grab lunch and a beer.

Key West – Mallory Square

Then head to Mallory Square for the Sunset Celebration. There are a variety of fun shows for the whole family. Yes, some of the comments can be a little crude (they do try really hard to make it family friendly) – but normally will go right over your kids head. We were able to drink from a coconut and enjoy some great food too.

Key West – Fury Ultimate Adventure

The Fury Ultimate Adventure is one of our favorite things we have done! Spend 6 hours on a large catamaran where they feed you all day and provide all you can drink soda plus beer and wine at the end the end of the trip. While you snorkel, parasail, jet ski and play on huge inflatables in the middle of the ocean. Such an amazing time!!

Key West – Dry Tortugas

If you can fit it in, take the boat tour out to the Dry Tortugas. It is an amazing and magical place. Seriously, it is an island 70 miles off of Key West with the bluest water you have ever seen and a beach filled with conch shells. And the fort offers the best photo opportunities.

Get Dramamine and be prepared for the long and bumpy boat ride.

We didn’t get a chance to do it but it is on our list to go back and stay for a few nights. Where To Stay:

RV Park: Boyds Campground We haven’t stayed here but we have heard if you want to be close to Key West this is a great place to stay with your RV.

Another option located a little over an hour from Key West is Pelican RV Resort in Marathon.

If you are looking for a less expensive option and somewhere that is in a quieter location, we recommend Sunshine Key – which is where we stayed. It is a good 90 minute drive into Key West so be prepared for that. Or, if you can get in, the Bahia Honda State Park is amazing – especially if you get right on the water.

Hotel: Casa Marina Resort , in Key West. The property is beautiful and not right in the middle of downtown Key West – which we think is a great fit for being with a family in Key West.

If you can stay in the Keys for longer we also recommend Hawks Cay! The only problem with staying here is you won’t want to leave but will instead want to stay at the hotel and enjoy all the amenities.

For a road trip it would be great for a couple day break but we really recommend it if you are looking for a week long stay in one place.

Everglades National Park

Shark Valley

Make a stop at the Shark Valley Visitor Center in the northern end of the Everglades and take a tram ride (may have to buy tickets well ahead of time for this) or if you have your bikes or want to rent them you can take the 15 mile bike ride into Shark Valley – which we recommend! You don’t need tickets to do the biking.

Biking through Shark Valley in the Everglades on The Ultimate Florida Road Trip

It is one amazing and wild ride as you pedal right past gigantic alligators!!! And depending on the weather you may even be riding through rain puddles with alligators sitting right in them. Once you reach the lookout you can climb to the top and have an amazing view of the Everglades.

At 15 miles round trip it is a long ride, but the path is paved and flat – but like in our case – if it is windy, it can be challenging.

Be prepared when you get to Shark Valley Visitor Center that there may be a line to get into the parking lot. They have a small parking lot and they only let so many people in.

We just sat in our car and waited our turn. It took about 20 minutes or so. A few other people parked on the road outside the entrance.

If you have your bikes I recommend waiting for a spot in the lot since you will be there a while.

You can also tour Everglades National Park by Airboat!

Where to Stay:

RV Park: If you are up for National Park Camping we recommend Midway Campground. It is a 21 minute drive from there to Shark Valley. If you don’t mind a 45-minute drive, Riptide RV Resort in Key Largo is another good option.

Hotel: Best Western Plus Kendall Hotel & Suites We did not stay here but do to its location it would be great for visiting Shark Valley. It is about a 38 minute drive to Shark Valley Visitor Center.

Highlands Hammock State Park

Looking for things to do in central Florida other than Orlando? Stop at the Highland Hammock State Park. It is a beautiful park and we recommend taking at least 1 of the hikes before heading out.

The Cyprus Swamp – Highland Hammock Trail is one of our favorite hikes. A couple of our kids were a little freaked out about it but when it was said and done everyone had fun!

RV Park: Highland Hammock State Park campground. We stayed here and it was great! Lake Josephine RV Park and Buttonwood Bay RV Resort , located in Sebring, are two other great options since they’re only about 20 minutes from the State Park.

Hotel: The Inn On The Lakes We did not stay here but due to its location we would recommend it.

Clearwater Beach

Voted one of the best beaches in Florida. Clearwater is a beautiful beach with white sand and aquamarine water and beautiful beach resorts . Just be prepared that it can be very busy.

If you can spend a day hanging out at the beach and then head to the main street to check out the shops and restaurants and grab some food and drinks.

Dolphin Tale

Visit Hope from the movie Dolphin Tale 2 at the Clearwater Aquarium and be sure to take the free boat ride over to the museum that is dedicated to the movie. And be on the look out for dolphins in the ocean on the ride!

RV Park: It is a bit of a drive, but we stayed at Lazy Days and made the 1 hour drive into Clearwater Beach. The Dunedin RV Resort , a closer option, is only a few miles from Clearwater.

Port St Joe Florida in Gulf County

We recently spent a week in Port St Joe, Florida and were so pleasantly surprised with how awesome the forgotten coast is! If you are looking to visit a new place in Florida this is it.

You can kayak and snorkel in the bay. Take a boat out to look for dolphins. Have a campfire on the beach and find some of the best shells we have ever found!

Gulf County, Florida is beautiful! The beaches are huge and you can walk for miles up and down them. I am so glad we found this hidden gem in Florida!

Destin has some of the best beaches to visit on The Ultimate Florida Road Trip

Finish your trip by stopping in Destin for a day of relaxation. If the weather is going to be warm enough when you go then get a hotel room on the beach and plan on just kicking back and relaxing for your last few days.

If you aren’t ready to relax Destin also offers an amazing pirate boat adventure for the kids, private catamaran tours with Smile N Wave and a dolphin cruise . Plus there is under the sea bowling and a lot of yummy restaurants in the area. We also loved The Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park just outside Destin!

Destin also has amazing sunsets to view during The Ultimate Florida Road Trip

The sunsets are amazing so be sure to catch it each night you are there! And you will want to try the Crab at the Crab Trap !

RV Park : Camp Gulf on the beach! It is by far one of our favorite RV parks and we highly recommend paying the extra to stay on the beach.

About half an hour from Destin is The Hideaway Retreat in Navarre, FL. With large, beautiful oak and magnolia trees surrounding the sites, this campground on the Santa Rosa Sound offers lots of shade and a true outdoor atmosphere.

About an hour the other direction is Emerald Coast RV Resort in Panama City Beach. With two heated pools, a hot tub, fitness center, and more, this campground offers plenty to do when you aren’t visiting Destin.

Hotel: Hilton Sandestin The hotel is actually pretty close to the RV park. You can walk on the beach to the hotel from the RV park and get a drink at their bar/restaurant. A great way to watch the sunset!

VRBO: Check out this awesome house with a pool and hot tub and only a few blocks from the beach!

Recommended Itinerary for 14 nights

Good site for those who want to travel here in Florida, one trip I would suggest is instead of heading towards Orlando on route 4, go over to Route 1 after Daytona and take the turn in to the Cape Canaveral Seashore. It has hiking trails, bike trails and you can also go to the beach. For the children continue on to the Space Center and take the tour, we had our grandson and he had a wonderful time there. After that yes on to Disney. Good blog.

HI could you confirm the period of year in which you did the trip?

We did this mainly in the fall/winter months, but it could be done pretty much at any time. Parts of Florida can get uncomfortably hot during the summer months, but the coastal areas can still be nice.

What were some of the most Dog friendly places you visited. The reason I ask is I am wanting to do a spontaneous road trip and wanted to make sure my four legged friend could come with me as I will not have anywhere else to put him while I am on the road. Or visiting certain places.

To be honest, there are tons of dog friendly places we’ve visited. It seems more and more businesses are being accommodating to pets. But off the top of my head, St. Augustine, Asheville, San Diego and Denver were all very dog friendly cities. Pretty much all of those cities had water bowls on the side walk, we went to a dog night at a brewery in Asheville (including a special dog-safe brew) and other events that dogs were welcome. Hi, We are coming over from England with our 5 & 7 yr olds and want to do an RV trip but have a couple of concerns; 1) Are RV parks very expensive 2) Are they isolated ie: do you need a car to get to all the places or can you drive your RV to them. Such as staying at Orlando for 3 nights how do you get to all the parks?

Some RV parks can be expensive. If you stick to state parks, it ranges around $40 USD per night. RV parks are usually a bit away from attractions. If you rent a relatively small RV (something like 30′ or less) you can drive that around town to grocery stores, restaurants, etc. and find parking for it. If you plan to visit attractions like Disney, they do have oversize and RV parking. Worst case scenario, in places like Orlando, you can always get an Uber. Best of luck, have a great trip!

South Florida- our old stompin’ grounds! Our first stop when we hit the road was the Keys. We love it so much down there. The camping has really gone crazy in price since then. But we hope to get back down there soon. Key West has so many awesome places to explore and fine- the back streets off Duval are so much fun to explore. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

I’ve enjoyed exploring your blog. So many great places – so little time : ). We just got back from camping in Florida over Christmas break and enjoyed St Augustine, too. We spent two nights but could easily have spent more, but Sanibel used up most of our time. If you get a chance, try kayaking at Blue Spring State Park – the manatees swam right under us! Perhaps next winter we can make it to the Everglades and Keys and try out some of your ideas. Best, Gwen

I have lived in Florida for 49 yrs and have never taken a road trip here to see what all I have been missing. The keys is our first stop. We live in High Springs Florida right across the road from Ginnie Springs, Poe Springs and Blue Springs. We will start in Pensacola and travel the beaches down to Naples and cut over to Miami and head down to the keys, back up and hug the coast all the way up to St Augustine. Our next trip will be inland and discover all the things we have missed.

While there are no federal laws mandating dog seat belts, some states, such as Rhode Island and New Jersey, require dogs to be restrained in cars. In many others – including Ohio — law enforcement officers can ticket drivers for distracted driving or for creating unsafe conditions for pets under animal welfare laws.

It’s best to research the states where you plan to be traveling for the most current laws. However, some online resources, like pet travel website Go Pet Friendly , list the laws by state and can provide a good starting point.

From pet restraints to travel bags, here are some essentials that can help make your next road trip with your dog safe, fun and stress-free.

If you need a restraint to comply with state laws, the Center for Pet Safety certifies products through an independent crash safety protocol. A full list can be found on the CPS website, but here’s a peek at some of the top products in each of the three categories:

Yordie is 100% a FIVE STAR BABY here at YPMP. There are certain dogs we can't bear to hear the 15 minute warning that he's going to be picked up...we can't wait to have him again and again and again!!!!

Elizabeth is a conscientious dog-lover who treats every dog in her care as a part of the family. We adopted our fur-baby over a year ago and have taken her everywhere with us, which has included multiple airplane trips, road trips, and relocations. We were very nervous about putting her into a daycare / boarding setting. When I saw the reviews for YPMP, I decided to reach out to Elizabeth to set up time for a visit. It was clear from our first conversation that Elizabeth not only loves dogs, she also takes the time to continuously educate herself about dog behavior, nutrition, and easing the normal anxieties that both dogs and their parents experience with boarding. While our dog was with Elizabeth, we received regular updates (video and photo). She was surrounded by happy, well-behaved four-legged friends. We enjoyed our vacation and so did she! We highly recommend YPMP for any other doting parents looking for a safe, loving alternative to a kennel.

I was so happily surprised when I saw how much Tiddly enjoyed all the other pups I had no idea her reaction would be so positive but it was truly a blessing!!
