My wife and I sold everything to become nomads and discovered ferries were the best way to travel — except for 2 downsides
- Norm Bour left California and started traveling full time with his wife in February 2019.
- Whenever possible, they prefer taking ferries for the lower cost and better travel experience.
- Bour suggests ferry travelers arrive early and bring their own food for a stress-free journey.
This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Norm Bour, a 69-year-old nomad who prefers ferry travel. The following has been edited for length and clarity.
I spent most of my life living in California and most of my career in real estate, but in 2008, the recession destroyed my business.
I reinvented myself as a consultant for the CBD industry, and in 2016, I was invited to speak at three events, in Amsterdam, Prague, and Warsaw, Poland. I was 62, and it was my first time in Europe. I spent three weeks traveling to different cities and had an aha moment.
It charmed me how people overseas seemed to enjoy life to the fullest and were not in a rush-rush mindset like most Americans I knew.
That trip made me want to travel more
A friend recommended I check out an app called TravelPirates . It shares discounted flights to international destinations. I started scanning the app for deals, and over the next two years, I traveled to Iceland, Spain, Portugal, France, and many other places with my wife, Kathleen.
At the end of 2018, we decided to become nomads. We sold everything, bought one-way tickets to Valencia, Spain, and left in February 2019. Because my business was remote, I could work from anywhere.
Since then, we've traveled to 37 countries, and we take ferries whenever we can. There's nothing better than sitting on the top deck of a ferry looking out at the ocean and watching the birds. It makes traveling less boring.
Taking a ferry is often a less expensive way to travel
More often than not, taking a ferry is cheaper than airfare, but it does take longer.
On a trip from Rome to Split, Croatia, in May 2019, it would've taken us a little over an hour to get there on a plane and cost about $300 for the dates we were looking at. Instead, we took an overnight ferry that lasted 11 hours but cost us only $60.
Sometimes people take trains to save money or if they have a fear of flying, but some romanticize it because you get to see more of the land you're passing by.
I feel the same way about being on a ferry. There's something so magical about being on a boat while seeing the world around you.
There are many tools you can use to book ferries
I often use Ferryhopper or Rome2Rio to help plan our ferry travel. My usual technique is to first Google "ferry from A to B" to see whether I can find a specific company to use. That increases the chances of getting an online ticket and QR code, relieving the stress of getting a seat.
Shorter ferries rarely sell out, and they run more frequently, so there's a good chance you can catch the next one if you miss your first option. The longer ferries are more selective, and it's a good idea to get your ticket in advance.
Related stories
Taking a combination of shorter and longer ferries has allowed us to see more places than if we traveled just by land, including on our 87-day motorcycle trip through six countries. We brought the motorcycle on the ferries with us.
Long ferry rides give you the chance to meet people
Ferry rides that are 8 to 12 hours or longer often happen overnight. On those boats, you can buy a general-seating ticket or a room with a bed. I prefer these longer trips because you get to see more and often get to interact with different types of people.
One of my most fun ferry experiences was when we traveled 12 hours from Sicily to Tunisia in December 2019.
It was a unique experience traveling with Tunisians who were mostly Muslim. They did their call to prayer in the hallways several times during our journey, and one family asked us whether we wanted to share what little food they had.
We spent most of the ride meeting people and learning about their cultures. There's no way we would've had that experience if we took the four-hour plane ride.
The only downsides of taking a ferry are the food options and potential for seasickness
Most people on ferries bring their own food because there aren't always reliable eating options on board. Some longer ferry rides may have snacks for sale, but you rarely find full meals. We usually bring pastries, fruit, and sandwiches.
I've never experienced seasickness, but I know some people may not want to take a ferry because of that fear. My wife is prone to motion sickness, so she takes medication like Bonine or Dramamine before we travel.
She also wears seasickness bands that push against different pressure points to help minimize nausea.
Don't arrive at the port last minute when taking a ferry
If you're taking a ferry, I recommend you arrive at least an hour before it departs. You want to leave plenty of time because when you're traveling internationally, you have to go through immigration and passport control. There can be long lines for that process and long security lines before getting on board.
We try to get tickets in advance online, but you have to buy tickets through some companies on-site, which can also lead to long lines.
Always have a back-up plan
When you're traveling during the months when the seas can be rough, have a backup plan in case ferries are canceled.
In December 2019, we were staying in Athens and decided to take a ferry to Naxos before leaving Greece for Singapore. When we tried to go back to Athens from Naxos, the ferries were canceled because of the weather. We had nonrefundable flights from Athens to Singapore and would've lost a couple hundred dollars if we missed that flight.
We scrambled and found a flight from Naxos to Athens, which helped us continue our trip as planned.
We won't be heading home anytime soon
When my wife and I first left to become nomads, people asked us whether we were ever coming back. Our response was that we probably weren't. We go back home only once or twice a year and imagine we'll go back even less as we continue to travel.
After traveling for five years and seeing the world, I hope we can continue to do this for the rest of our lives. I don't want to grow old in some nursing home or sit on the couch and watch TV. I want to see as much of the world as I can, whether it's on a plane, train, or my personal favorite, a ferry.

Biden-Harris Administration Announces Availability of $316 Million to Modernize Ferry Service and Better Connect Rural Communities
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration (FTA) today announced the availability of $316 million to support and modernize passenger ferry service in communities across the country. Across the country, there are approximately three million ferry riders each month, utilizing these transit services to get to work, school, healthcare appointments, and more.
"I have seen firsthand how, for many Americans in many different parts of the country, ferries are the best and sometimes only way to get where they need to go," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg . "Through President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we’re pleased to make $316 million available to help communities modernize their ferry service so that Americans better, easier, more reliable options." In addition to FTA's longstanding Passenger Ferry Program , President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) established more federal support for ferry service, including for ferry systems transitioning to climate-friendly technologies and to expand ferry service in rural areas . The Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) announced today includes:
- The Passenger Ferry Program supports capital projects to buy, replace, or modernize passenger ferries, terminals, and related equipment in urban areas. For Fiscal Year (FY) 2024, $51 million is available.
- The Electric or Low Emitting Ferry Program provides federal support to transit agencies to buy ferry vessels that reduce emissions by using alternative fuels or on-board energy storage systems. For FY 2024, $49 million is available.
- The Ferry Service for Rural Communities Program provides federal support to ferry services in rural areas, including capital, planning, and operating costs. For FY 2024, $216 million is available.
"Passenger ferries provide critical and cost-effective travel for people throughout the United States, but many ferry agencies are not able to maintain all of their vessels in a state of good repair and make necessary investments in safety," said FTA Acting Administrator Veronica Vanterpool . "FTA is pleased to provide federal support to help modernize and expand how people travel by water while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, advancing equity by making transit available to more people, and creating good-paying jobs."
Past grants have helped transit authorities upgrade ferry service across the country, from Alaska to Maine, to Georgia and California. Last year, FTA announced $220.2 million in project selections through its ferry programs. See the full list of grants.
Instructions for applying and eligibility information can be found on FTA’s website and in GRANTS.GOV (FTA-2024-007-TPM-PassFerry), (FTA-2024-009-TPM-Rural Ferry) and (FTA-2024-008-TPM-FERRYPILOT). Complete proposals must be submitted electronically through the GRANTS.GOV “APPLY” function by June 17, 2024.
Vessev’s elegant VS-9 electric foiling ferry makes sea travel smoother and more efficient
Soon to grace the waters off Auckland, New Zealand, the Vessev VS-9 is a pioneering electric passenger boat for a zero-emission future
- Sign up to our newsletter Newsletter
This is the new Vessev VS-9, and electric hydrofoiling ferry design for ferrying tourists across the waters around New Zealand. We’ve touched on the amazing properties of hydrofoil tech before, whether it’s for electric surfboards , one-off concept boats or private speed boats . Vessev’s design upscales all these to create an ultra-energy efficient machine for the country’s Fullers360 ferry company.
A render of the Vessev VS-9 Electric Foiling Ferry
Established in 2018 and led by ex-Apple employee Eric Laakmann (he was a program lead on the Apple Watch) and Max Olson, Vessev’s ambition is for more zero-emission nautical innovation, both in terms of sport sailing and everyday transportation. The wider team has worked on everything from rocket science to the America’s Cup, and the VS-9 distils all this experience into a single product.
The foils lift the VS-9 out of the water
From the outset, Vessev wanted to be able to call the craft the ‘world’s most efficient electric hydrofoiling ferry,’ citing up to 95% fuel savings over a more conventional diesel counterpart. That’s due largely to the hydrofoil’s ability to minimise its drag on the water, raising itself up on a sophisticated carbon fibre foiling mechanism – part derived from America’s Cup craft – for a smooth, ultra efficient ride that’s up to 20% more efficient that equivalent foiling systems.
Vessev VS-9 Electric Foiling Ferry
As Vessev points out, this technology is still very much in its infancy, with only around 100 electric hydro-foiling boats on the world’s oceans today. That contrasts with 33 million fossil fuel-powered vessels, helping make the shipping industry one of the most polluting transportation sectors.
A render of the passenger cabin on the VS-9
The 9m long VS-9 is photographed here in prototype form without the passenger cabin, which is represented in the renders above. The VS-9 has an optimum speed of around 22-25 knots, at which point the foils are fully deployed, lifting the craft above the surface of the water. Efficiency doesn’t just reduce emissions but also operating costs, as well as reducing the need for heavy batteries.
Fullers360 is expected to run a VS-9 with up to 10 passengers, sailing on routes that make the most of the boat’s combination of speed and efficiency. With a range of 50 nautical miles (around 57 miles), the VS-9 is well-suited to the waters of Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf, where it’ll be the first hydrofoil vessel to receive commercial certification.
The foils create a minimal wake
Vessev sees a bright future for the technology. As Laakmann says, ‘The benefits of the VS-9 scale up to larger vessels. We are already working to develop the VS-18, a 100-passenger vessel using the same technology and design of the VS-9, which will have additional seakeeping capability and unlock even more opportunities.’

Windswept Views and ‘Glories Strung Like Beads’: Exploring Brooklyn by Ferry
More than 160 years after Walt Whitman extolled the joys of riding the ferry, there are fresh opportunities to explore neighborhoods like Red Hook, Brooklyn Heights and Bay Ridge by boat.
By Julie Besonen
Looking for a fresh way to scout Brooklyn’s waterfront? Try a ferry. For $2.75 , you can explore ports of call that cradle a bounty of cultural and culinary adventures. Island-hopping from Manhattan can begin at the Pier 11-Wall Street landing, where the salty air is invigorating and anticipation builds as vessels with names like Ferry Godmother, City Fishy and McShiny pull in to whisk you away.
NYC Ferry launched in 2017 and has expanded its reach ever since. Former Mayor Bill de Blasio championed the city-subsidized service ( even far more than the city apparently knew ), operated by Hornblower, a private company based in San Francisco, as a way for subway-starved neighborhoods to have a convenient transit option. Tourists can benefit, too. Snack bars, fairly clean bathrooms and a top deck with epic, windswept views of the Brooklyn Bridge and glittering shorelines are part of the ride.
Six daily routes link all five boroughs. A Governors Island shuttle runs on weekends through Sept. 11, according to a NYC Ferry spokeswoman. Vessels have a capacity of 150 to 350, relatively small considering the Staten Island Ferry can fit thousands. The longest line on balmy days is for Rockaway, Queens (tip: go before noon). Of 25 landings, eight are in Brooklyn; Greenpoint is temporarily closed owing to repairs. Dumbo/Fulton Ferry has its charms, including stunning Manhattan skyline views, waterfront parks, the century-old Jane’s Carousel and Bargemusic , a moored barge presenting chamber music concerts. The Brooklyn Navy Yard, North Williamsburg, South Williamsburg and Brooklyn Army Terminal/Sunset Park are more for commuters than sightseers.
Three stops that are fun for separate day trips are Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6, Red Hook and Bay Ridge, all along the South Brooklyn route. Don’t forget to pack sunscreen.
Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 6
On a recent sweltering day, a merciful canopy of trees shaded the path through Brooklyn Bridge Park, just off the landing at Pier 6 in Brooklyn Heights, bordering Cobble Hill. Families and groups of friends can easily spend hours picnicking on pesticide-free lawns and make use of sandy volleyball courts and playgrounds with two-story slides and cooling water jets. For get-up-and-go types, there’s a lot more to see.
Wander through Brooklyn Heights and be astonished by the beautiful medley of Federal, Greek-Revival and Italianate architecture. Columbia Place, Joralemon, Pierrepont, Clinton, Pineapple, Orange, Cranberry and Middagh Streets conjure another era, when W.H. Auden, Benjamin Britten, Carson McCullers, Truman Capote, W.E.B. Du Bois, Arthur Miller and Walt Whitman strolled the leafy sidewalks.
You can console yourself about never being able to afford to buy a place there with drinks at the Long Island Bar (110 Atlantic Avenue), a polished, retro spot with ample sidewalk seating. A co-owner, Toby Cecchini, ignited the craze for Cosmopolitans in the 1980s and here blends up a cheeky frozen version. There is nothing silly about its tangy, potent kick. The frozen piña colada is lusher, like soft-serve with three kinds of rum. The food makes a strong impact, too, from a jar of smoked trout with a lavish lid of trout roe ($15) to a satisfying, old school double-patty cheeseburger piquant with pickles and paired with battered fries ($20).
From there, inspect Atlantic Avenue, a commercial artery of enticing shops: Salter House (119 Atlantic Avenue), for instance, has coffee, tea and curated domestic goods; Sahadi’s (187 Atlantic Avenue) is a Middle Eastern food emporium that has anchored the neighborhood since 1948.
Eating options abound near the waterfront, such as the Italian-ish Popina (127 Columbia Street). Unwind over a mezcal negroni ($15) and hot chicken Milanese ($27) in its expansive backyard. Before reboarding the ferry at Pier 6, try for a bar stool at Pilot , a meticulously restored wooden schooner docked on the north side of the pier. Perhaps you’ll catch an alluring sunset while enjoying a drink and a half-dozen expertly shucked oysters ($19 to $24), pushing this pleasure trip until the last boat departs at 9:30 p.m. on weekends.
If Red Hook wasn’t such a pain to reach by subway, its small-town magic might be overrun by an influx of people clamoring to feed on its good energy. NYC Ferry appears to be an amenable solution, allowing visitors to flood this Brooklyn pocket’s independent businesses and then go back where they came from (9:21 p.m. is currently the last ferry out on weekends).
Within a few blocks of the landing is Pioneer Works , a contemporary artistic center housed at 135 Imlay Street while its main compound undergoes renovation. Also by the waterfront is the beloved Sunny’s Bar (253 Conover Street), a roadhouse with frequent live music, and Strong Rope Brewery , a cavernous tap room whose outdoor tables sport views of the Statue of Liberty. There is no food at either place; for ballast, procure a thin-crust pizza with fresh, creative ingredients ($18 to $21) from the nearby Hoek (117 Ferris Street).
On Van Brunt Street is Record Shop (360 Van Brunt Street), specializing in vinyl and used books you always meant to read. Antiques merchants, art galleries, clothing stores, wine shops and restaurants take up many of the other storefronts.
St. John Frizell’s Fort Defiance recently staged a welcome return, reopening on a new corner (347 Van Brunt Street). The appealing cocktail and food menu invites ad hoc pairings like an absinthe-tinged Sazerac ($15) with a bowl of crisp chickpeas ($3), crunchy-creamy cod and potato croquettes ($8) and a chicory Caesar salad deluged with Grana Padano cheese ($16).
For those who prefer dining and drinking outside in warm weather or for Covid-wary reasons, Fort Defiance has pleasant sidewalk seating. Grindhaus , another neighborhood staple, offers a peaceful backyard. The chef Kevin Speltz’s mushroom tempura with fish sauce vinaigrette ($19) and coconut-infused purple potato dumplings ($17) are wonderful. Duck leg confit, crisply standing up to any Parisian specimen, was splayed atop a waffle saturated with sweet chili and brown butter ($27), a brilliant combination.
The ferry to Bay Ridge is an exhilarating voyage, cutting through the waves on the East River, past Governors Island and aiming for the majesty of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. It’s the last stop on the South Brooklyn route so everybody must disembark. Walk the pier, hemmed by anglers patiently fishing, and head south to the idyllic Narrows Botanical Gardens , flourishing with rosebushes and a menagerie of birds loud enough to drown out the Belt Parkway traffic.
This southwest corner of Brooklyn is a melting pot, largely populated over the last century by Norwegian, Syrian, Italian, Irish and Greek immigrants. Thoroughfares like Third Avenue and Fifth Avenue have so much diversity in street life and languages they feel like multicultural bazaars.
“There are Latinx and Fujianese influxes in addition to the existing Palestinian, Egyptian and Yemeni populations,” said Dan Hetteix, the producer of the progressive podcast Radio Free Bay Ridge . “Bay Ridge is the experimental proving ground for so many culinary artists, bringing amazing new vibrancy to the neighborhood. We have some of the cheapest and best cuisine in all of Brooklyn.”
That’s a tall claim, but it’s hard to deny after sampling the Mexican food at Yucusiama (484 77th Street), which opened last year in a small storefront. Housemade corn tortillas are almost as light as crepes, wrapping a quesadilla bursting with grilled chicken, raw onion and melted Oaxacan cheese ($8). Tortas, among the world’s most underrated sandwiches, are built on soft buns brushed with refried beans and mayonnaise. There are several fillings to choose from (all $9); the suadero (thinly sliced beef flank) layered with avocado, green pads of cactus, jalapeños and stretchy cheese, is reason for a return trip.
Also destination-worthy: the slow-roasted, shredded lamb fahsah ($19.95) and floppy, blistered discs of flatbread at Yemen Café , which recently relocated to larger digs, at 7317 Fifth Avenue (there’s also a branch in Cobble Hill). Portions are family-size, accompanied by salad and peppery, deeply flavored broth.
Italian restaurants have not disappeared from Bay Ridge; Piccante (7214 Third Avenue) ranks among the best. Modest in looks, the kitchen turns out world-class fresh pasta for cushiony beef lasagna ($15) and pappardelle threaded with honey-braised short rib ragù ($18), fine to hog for yourself if you want to gain five pounds.
Food might be the most compelling magnet, but artists are moving into the neighborhood, too, Mr. Hetteix said. Galleries have popped up, including Underland (457 77th Street, Unit 1) and Stand4 (414 78th Street), in a former medical office.
Charting the wonders of Bay Ridge is considerably easier than when the explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano sailed these waters nearly 500 years ago, as long as you don’t miss the last ferry at 9 p.m.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.
Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.
Belfry and Neighbouring Churches
Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.
To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.
Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.
Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.
Tsaritsa's Chambers
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.
At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.
Palace of Tsar Alexis
The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
