Ecuador Travel

woman in her local farm fields, Ecuador

Diversity and history at the palm of your hand

Compact and diverse, Ecuador is like a tasting menu for South America. There are Andean mountains, complete with glacial volcanoes. At Otavalo, site of the largest market in South America, Ecuador's numerous Indigenous groups come to barter for both crafts and staples. There are Amazonian jungles and charming colonial cities, like cobblestoned Cuenca. Best of all, all these flavours are packed together, so you can be in the jungle in the morning and at the foot of a glacier by the evening. Ecuador also has one gem found nowhere else: the pristine and fragile Galápagos Islands, made famous through the writings of Charles Darwin.

Day 1 Guayaquil

Welcome to Equador and the gateway to the Galapagos! On arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel.

This afternoon, your local guide will take you on a walking tour of Guayaquil.  You will visit Seminario Park, famously known as Iguana Park for its resident Green Iguanas. Next, explore The Integration Plaza at Guayaquil City Hall and Vulcano Forge, showcasing sculptures that unravel the Independent secret plan of the Patriots. Then, venture to the Malecon 2000 with its plazas, monuments, and gardens before delving into the historic Las Penias Neighborhood, marked by its ancient fort and wooden houses recounting tales of past pirate attacks. Estimate time of the walking tour: 2 hours

Note: If you wish to join the complementary city tour, please make sure your flight arrives before 1500hrs

Day 2 Guayaquil Santa Cruz Island

This morning you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to the Galapagos Islands.  (Flight tickets and departure time will be advised locally on your arrival in Guayaquil). Your guide will pick you up from the airport and continue on to visit the Highlands of the Island where you can observe the giant tortoise roaming in a natural habitat. Make the most of great picture opportunities with this endangered species, endemic to the Galapagos before continuing to your hotel in Puerto Ayora.

Later, head to the Charles Darwin Research Station, located in Puerto Ayora. The research station plays a crucial role in the conservation and preservation of the Galápagos Islands' delicate ecosystem. Here, you'll learn about ongoing research projects, breeding programs for endangered species, and the conservation efforts to protect the islands' biodiversity. One of the main highlights of the Charles Darwin Research Station is the Giant Tortoise Breeding Center. You'll have the opportunity to see these magnificent creatures up close and learn about the conservation efforts to protect and reintroduce them to their natural habitats.

Note:  Please note a US$20 per person transit card is payable on departure at Guayaquil Airport.  Galapagos National Park entry fee is payable on arrival on the islands (for arrivals until 31 July 2024 the fee is US$100 per person. From 01 August 2024 the fee is US$200 per person) Both payments are made in USD cash.

Day 3 Santa Cruz Island outer island excursion Santa Cruz Island

After breakfast, you will embark on a full day tour to one of the beautiful uninhabited islands of Santa Fe, South Plaza, North Seymour or Bartolomé (subject to scheduling).   Your excursion will travel by speed boat - the trip takes approximately 2 hours each way.

Your expert naturalist guide will introduce you to the islands unique wildlife which may include endemic species such as Galapagos penguins, land iguanas, Darwin's finches, blue-footed Boobies and many more.

You will have the opportunity to snorkel in the crystal-clear waters. Discover the marine life and vibrant coral reefs.

You’ll then return to Puerto Ayora by late afternoon.

Day 4 Santa Cruz Island San Cristobal Island

After breakfast, visit Tortuga Bay.  You will take a guided walk (45 minutes each way) to take in the scenery and wildlife.  Visitors can often encounter marine iguanas, Galápagos crabs, sea lions, and a variety of bird species such as pelicans and finches.

Once you reach Playa Brava, please be aware that swimming is not allowed here due to the presence of hazardous currents. For those wishing to swim, continue walking along the beach until you discover a trail leading through the mangrove forest. This path will take you to Playa Mansa, a sheltered bay where you can safely swim and relish the cool shade provided by the mangroves.

This afternoon, transfer to the pier and board a speed-boat to San Cristobal Island (approximately 2.5 hours ride). Upon arrival, you will enjoy a walking tour in the beautiful Puerto Baquerizo to enjoy the local life.

Day 5 San Cristobal Island Kicker Rock (Leon Dormido) San Cristobal Island

This morning you will visit one of the most iconic sites in the Galapagos Islands:  Kicker Rock or “Leon Dormido”, an amazing rock formation just 90 minutes from San Cristobal Island. This incredible landmark is a remnant of a vertical tuff cone formation with an altitude of 500 feet from the Pacific Ocean, it is considered as one of the best snorkelling sites in the Archipelago.

Erosion has given the formation its characteristic shape of a shoe (hence the name Kicker Rock) and others see a sleeping lion from above, the reason why in Spanish it is called “Leon Dormido”.

Snorkelling in the vicinity of the rock is truly an unforgettable experience! You will be able to spot marine iguanas, sea turtles, rays, Galapagos sharks, schools of colourful fish and, with some luck, hammerhead sharks. Also in the crevasses of the rock, you can encounter blue-footed boobies, masked-boobies and frigate birds.

Return to San Cristobal and your hotel for a well-deserved  short  resting time. In the afternoon, visit  La Loberia beach, a scenic beach filled with large colonies curious sea-lions, marine iguanas, frigate birds and more.

Note: in some instances visits to Kicker Rock will be restricted.  For groups not able to visit Kicker Rock, a visit to Isla Lobos will be provided as an alternative.  Isla Lobos is named after the numerous sea lions (lobos marinos in Spanish) that inhabit the island.  You'll also have opportunities to observe a variety of bird species, including blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, and brown pelicans. Once you arrive at Isla Lobos, your naturalist guide will lead you on guided walks through the island's unique vegetation and provide opportunities for close encounters with the wildlife. You will have time to do snorkeling with unique species and then sail to an isolated beach, to relax on its sand, or swim or do some more snorkeling.

Day 6 San Cristobal Island Quito

This morning visit to the Interpretation Center, which takes you through the history and settlement of the islands. Visitors can enjoy expositions on natural history, human history and conservation. The natural history explains the different natural facts, such as the volcanic origin of the islands, the distance between the mainland, its currents, the special climate, the arrival of different species, etc. The exposition room of Human History gives a chronological overview of the discovery and colonization of the Galapagos.

The second section describes the reality of today's Galapagos: the problems and the struggle of several institutions and individuals to conserve Galapagos. The Center also has an outdoor theater and a cinema.

At the appropriate time you will be picked up  and transferred to the airport in time to board your flight to the capital of Ecuador, Quito. Upon arrival, your guide will welcome you and drive to your cosy centrally located hotel.  The rest of the afternoon is free for you to explore the surroundings.

Day 7 Quito

Today you are at leisure to enjoy the quaint city at your own pace. The Ecuador capital is constructed on the foundations of an ancient Incan city and is known for its well-preserved colonial centre, rich with 16th- and 17th-century churches and other structures blending European, Moorish and indigenous styles.

Alternatively, you may wish to join an optional full day tour of this fascinating city.

Explore Quito's famous Old Town, considered as Human Heritage Patrimony and the largest Colonial district in all of South America. Along the way you'll visit “La Compañia de Jesus” Church, surely one of the most beautiful churches in South America, and also the charming “La Ronda” Street, the most popular colonial street for centuries in the centre of the City.

Afterwards, you will head to the north of the city for about 50 minutes to the also famous "Middle of the World" with its symbolic Monument and Compound with many open-air exhibits, cultural displays, shops and typical food Restaurants. The Monument was built during the XVII century when a French expedition travelled to Ecuador to define the precise location of the Equatorial Line.

Your guide will tell you all the important aspects of the Compound and its importance to researchers and scientist around the World; you will enter the Monument where you find many displays of the Ecuadorian rich and ancient culture and human history, also visit the on-site “Inti-Ñan” Museum where you can witness and participate in active experiments that prove that you are indeed at the Centre of the Earth.

Day 8 Quito

Your tour comes to an end today after breakfast.  At the appropriate time, make your own way to the airport.

What travelers are saying

"I've travelled with Intrepid in Vietnam, Morocco, Nepal and Egypt and had a brilliant time every time. The experience is better than most tours as you are in a small group that goes a bit more 'off the beaten track', and you don't get taken to endless shopping opportunites (i.e. a cousin's carpet shop). They also have higher ethics than most travel companies, they contribute to local charities and they avoid animal use (donkeys etc) where possible. The tour leaders we have had have all been wonderful, knowledgable and relaxed, with good english."

"Beware: Tours of Distinction does NOT have guaranteed departures! My family of four was completely booked for a July 8th departure to Switzerland, and received a voice message two weeks prior to departure indicating the tour was canceled due to lack of interest. Mind you, I had been attempting to contact the company for multiple weeks prior to receiving the voice message to request additional information regarding flights. Instead of receiving a direct response from a representative, I was told on three separate phone calls that the person managing this trip was unavailable, and my attempts to receive additional information via email were completely ignored. I understand a need to cancel, but the unprofessionalism with holding on delivering this critical information until two weeks prior is unacceptable. Why would the company not explain the likely cancelation during one of my many attempts to confirm flight information as they were clearly aware of the lack of interest? The company ruined my family’s summer vacation. Funds were fully refunded, but without enough time to find another comparable tour during our available window. Very disappointing."

Ecuador Tour Selection Trips

  • Ecuador is so rich in biodiversity and tourist attractions – the Galapagos, the Andes, the Amazon, the colonial cities, the Pacific coast -- that you may need several visits to do the country justice.
  • Taking a week-long Galapagos cruise allows you to see more of the islands and their diverse wildlife than simply staying on one of the two populated islands.
  • Many visitors combine Galapagos tours with tours to Machu Picchu in Peru, and many tour operators offer such combinations.
  • If your tour takes you to the Amazon basin, look to stay at least three days if possible in a jungle lodge. This not only allows you to get a good taste of the region, but it will increase your chances of seeing certain species, and more animals.
  • Even though Ecuador is on the Equator, pack a jacket if your tour includes high-elevation cities like Quito and Cuenca. In these mountain towns, the temperatures can drop pretty significantly at night.  You might also consider bringing high-altitude medication if you’re really bothered by the rarefied air, but discuss possible side effects with your doctor.

Galapagos Islands (Cruise)

To view images fullscreen please turn device

Ecuador is often described as encapsulating an entire continent in a single country. Straddling the equator on South America’s Pacific coast, and wedged between Colombia and Peru, this small Latin American nation is able to boast landscapes as diverse as the snow-capped peaks of the Andes, Bellavista Cloud Forest, the Amazon Rainforest and the volcanic terrain of the Galapagos Islands.

Considered one of only 17 megadiverse countries in the world, Ecuador is home to a higher ...

Considered one of only 17 megadiverse countries in the world, Ecuador is home to a higher concentration of biodiversity per square kilometre than anywhere in the world. On the mainland over 1,600 species of birds have been recorded, alongside 106 endemic reptiles, 138 endemic amphibians and nearly 6,000 species of butterflies. And we haven’t even started on the Galapagos Islands yet.

The Galapagos Islands are a short flight from the Ecuadorian mainland and add an extra dimension to Ecuador’s already rich ecological tapestry. Holding UNESCO World Heritage status, the Galapagos are famous as the foundation on which Darwin developed his Theory of Evolution. To this day they provide unparalleled natural landscapes, including volcanoes and black sandy beaches, and extraordinary wildlife, such as giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies, Galapagos penguins and marine iguanas. Facing environmental threats from both climate change and increased levels of tourism, all our tours to the Galapagos Islands are taken with the utmost care for the environment to ensure we leave as small a footprint as possible.

Heading back to the mainland visitors can’t fail to be impressed by the majestic ‘Avenue of Volcanoes’, a 200-mile ridge of precipitous peaks that provides the backdrop for surely one of the best road journeys in the world. A short drive from Quito lies the Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve, a protected forest of plunging valleys filled with tall, orchid-festooned trees and a plethora of plants, birds and mammals, making the region a delight for anyone with an interest in ecology. Hiking, bird watching and guided walks with local naturalists are available and horse riding is also possible. Ecuador also produces the world’s biggest and most beautiful roses and is the world’s largest exporter of the flower. And then there is the country’s wonderful coffee and chocolate.

Whilst the stunning wildlife and ecological diversity attract the headlines, Ecuador also has a fascinating human side to it. Quito, Ecuador's capital city, is considered one of the finest in Latin America and its setting, which is flanked by volcanic peaks, is simply breath-taking. Divided into the UNESCO designated old town and the new city of multi-story hotels and high-rise government buildings, Quito offers a diverse mix of tradition and modernity, while somehow managing to retain a wholly Ecuadorian flavour.

Just north of Quito lies the pretty town of Otavalo, famous for its market (particularly on Saturdays), which is one of the best places in South America to buy handicrafts. On the journey to Otavalo from Quito you will pass through the equator, offering the chance to stand straddling both the southern and northern hemispheres. In the south meanwhile, sits the colonial city of Cuenca whose UNESCO designated old town hides mysterious Incan origins; local legends speak of lost temples of gold and magnificent royal palaces.

Ecuador and the Galapagos provide the perfect holiday destination for those seeking nature in all its glory. Our exciting and varied range of group tours and tailor-made holidays to both Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands are an ideal place to begin exploring all this unique country has to offer.

Being situated so close to the equator, Ecuador experiences the same climatic conditions year round, and weather can vary dramatically depending on the region you are in. You WILL encounter rain, but the sun can also be fierce (especially at altitude) and you should be prepared for all eventualities. Quito is quite prone to experiencing all four seasons in one day! The Galapagos Islands enjoy a tropical climate with a warmer, wetter season from December to May and a cooler, dryer season from June to November.

USEFUL INFORMATION

Health and Vaccinations

There are no mandatory immunisations for travellers to Ecuador though you should be up to date with Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio and Hepatitis A. Malaria and Yellow Fever are present in some parts of Ecuador. Please note we are not medical professionals and so we highly recommend you seek advice from your local GP or travel centre as to the correct immunisations and preventative treatments.

Currency

In Ecuador the official unit of currency is the US Dollar. Notes are the same, and US coins are also accepted, but the country also mints its own coins that cannot be used outside of Ecuador.

To check out the latest exchange rate for the places that you are visiting you can go to www.oanda.com .

Cultural Sensitivity

On our tours you will frequently interact with local people, each with their own distinct customs and traditions. We therefore ask you to be considerate and to treat them with respect. Your tour-leaders and guides will always be able to advise you accordingly.

Although South Americans are very relaxed in comparison to people in other parts of the world, some places (especially up in the Andes) are very traditional and conservative, and your dress and behaviour should respect this. Public displays of affection are considered inappropriate, and when visiting churches and cathedrals, women should cover their heads with a scarf or hat while men should take their hats off.

Language & Religion

In Ecuador the major language is Spanish, with several other indigenous languages spoken in the Andes. English is also widely spoken. The main religion is Catholic.

Time

Ecuador is 5 hours behind GMT.

A useful website to check the time zone differences is www.worldtimezone.com .

Food and drink

Ecuador is known for its fabulous exotic fruits, high quality fish and seafood, and the countless varieties of Andean potatoes. Across the country you will find a broad spectrum of national and regional dishes, including lemon-marinated shrimp, toasted corn, and pastries stuffed with spiced meats. If you are feeling courageous, you can put your culinary bravery to the test with roasted cuy (guinea pig). Vegetarians or those with special dietary needs can also be catered for; however, in some rural places the type of food may be limited. Please let us know your requirements as soon as possible so we can make any arrangements to cater for your needs.

Odyssey travels by coach and occasionally uses local transport, including trains and ferries. Specifics are always outlined in your tour itinerary. Buses are very cheap and travel to most towns and villages, although can be fairly slow and crowded. Domestic flights are availble and can be a reasonably inexpensive and convenient option if required. Train services are available, though can be very slow – as such, trains might not be the most efficient option for getting around.

Accommodation

In major cities, Odyssey stays in centrally located 3-4 star hotels, with easy access to public transport. In smaller towns or rural areas, we usually stay in family-run hotels or guesthouses. On our longstay tours, during which you spend the length of the tour in a single location, we use serviced apartments.

Tour Guides

Odyssey always engages local guides with regional knowledge to ensure an authentic experience during which you can learn as much as possible about the history and culture of places you visit.

Geography, Environment, & Weather

Ecuador is situated in the west of South America, bordering Columbia to the north, and Peru to the south and east. Colombia has 2,237 kilometres of coastline and covers a total area of 283,561 square kilometres, including the Galapagos Islands. Ecuador has four distinct geographical regions, the Costa (coast), Sierra (mountains), the jungles of Oriente, and the Galapagos Islands.

Climatic conditions across Ecuador can vary, depending on region. Temperatures in the coastal region are moderated by cool ocean currents, while climate in the mountainous Sierra region is heavily influenced by altitutde, with daily temperatures ranging significantly between warm daytime highs and cool to cold night-time lows. Further east, the tropical Oriente region is hot and humid year round, and often experiences heavy precipitation. As for the Galapos itself, temperatures do not vary overly much over the seasons, with warmer temperatures between December and May, and cooler temperatures between June and November. Depending on when and where you travel in Ecuador, check the weather reports and prepare accordingly.

World Heritage sites

Ecuador has 5 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You can view the official list of the sites here (https://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/ec). A few notable heritage sites include:

Historic Centre of Santa Ana de los Ríos de Cuenca, featuring beautiful Spanish colonial architecture dating back several centuries Qhapaq Ñan (Andean Road System), the intricate ancient road system that once criss-crossed the former Incan empire Sangay National Park, which hosts a diverse range of ecosystems including glacial and volcanic ecosystems, wetlands, grasslands and tropical rainforests.

Festivals & Events

Ecuador’s unique culture, which is a rich syncretic mix of both Spanish and pre-Columbian native influences, is showcased in numerous festivals and events held throughout the year. The Inti Raymi Celebration, held on June 21 in many indigenous villages of the highlands, gives thanks to the gods Inti (Sun) and Pachamama (Earth Mother) for the abundance of crop harvests. La Diablada de Píllaro is one of the more eye-catching festivals on the Ecuadorian calendar – held in the Pillaro region in early January, it features thousands of revellers donning elaborate ‘devil’ costumes and dancing through the streets for several days. The influence of the Roman Catholic Church runs deep in Ecuadorian culture, and this is evident in the Carnival festival, which takes place 40 days before Easter each year. Carnival is celebrated with exuberance in Ecuador, with parades, dancing, music and drinking, as well the widespread light-hearted practice of throwing water and flour at passersby on the street.

Eating & Drinking

Meat and seafood, as well as potatoes, corn, and rice, all figure prominently in Ecuadorian cuisine. Bolon de Verde is a filling dish, made by forming mashed green plantains into a ball, filling it with meat and sometimes cheese, then pan-frying it. Ceviche is another popular dish in Ecuador – a mix of seafood and shellfish soaked in a broth of lime juice and other citric juices, ceviche is popularly consumed on the coast. Fruits comprise an important part of the Ecuadorian diet, including plantians (‘cooking bananas’) and the cherimoya fruit, which is often enjoyed as a fruit juice. Numerous beverages are popularly consumed in Ecuador, including canelazo (a hot alcoholic beverage made of sugar cane alcohol, fruit juice, cinnamon, and cloves) and colada morada (a drink made with fruits, spices, and purple corn flour).

Health & Safety

As of writing, smartraveller.gov.au advises travellers to exercise a high degree of caution when travelling to Ecuador. In particular, it advised to avoid travelling to the border provinces of Sucumbios and Esmeraldas provinces, or anywhere within 20 kilometres of the Colombian border, due to heightened security concerns. Crime is a problem in Ecuador, so pay close attention to your personal security. By law, you must carry identification with you at all times when in Ecuador.

Electrical Supply

Whenever you travel overseas, it’s always wise to take an appropriate travel adaptor. Ecuador’s electricity supply runs at 120V and 60Hz. Ecuador uses both the Type A and Type B electric plugs, so make sure you have the right travel adaptor with you.

Tour Reviews

All guides were excellent. Each had done a lot of research on dinosaurs before we arrived and had a good sense of what we were after.

Participant 2017

Argentina Dinosaur dig including Titanosaur small group tours

Well balanced with city vs country, visits to remote dinosaur sites, town museums, a winery. The hands-on dinosaur dig and fossil preparation live-in at Lake Barraleas was superb and I could have spent more time there as we went out a lot. It was excellent with a great Argentinian team looking after us..

Well balanced, with a great group leader in John Pickrell. He was extremely informative and had great contacts so we saw behind the scenes at museums. We covered a lot of distance but with 2-3 nights in a number of places had plenty of free time to do your own thing.

We were privileged to go where many tourists could not go but some of that was due to the presence of John Pickrell still we saw more and met more senior paleontologists that I had expected. All museums and other sites were a marvelous experience

Accommodation exceeded expectations in most cases.

What is the time zone in Ecuador?

Ecuador has two time zones, Ecuador Time (UTC-5) and Galapagos Time (UTC-6). Ecuador does not observe daylight savings.

Is tipping customary in Ecuador?

If you’re on an Odyssey tour, we take care of tipping so you don’t need to give it a second thought. However, in your free time, or if travelling independently, it’s essential that you tip an appropriate amount for services. Tipping is not mandatory, but is often expected after good service. A small $2-$3 tip is customary for taxi drivers and housekeeping staff at hotels, while $0.50-$1 per bag is commong for hotel bell boys. In upscale restaurants, a 10% service charge is generally included in the bill, though a small tip of 3-5% is often given to the server. Smaller restaurants do not generally include a service charge, though a tip of 10% to the server may be expected.

What is the internet access like in Ecuador?

Most larger hotels and upscale restaurants, as well as airports and shopping centres, should offer Wifi, though bear in mind that it’s not always free.

Can I use my mobile/cell phone while in Ecuador?

Check with your cell phone provider to see whether you’re able to make calls and use data while in Ecuador. Many providers will allow you to pay a daily fee that allows you to make calls and check the internet while only being charged your regular rates. However, be certain to inform your provider that you’re heading overseas, because just like a bank they can turn off your service as a result of unusual activity.

Responsible travel tips for Ecuador

  • Learn at least the local greetings to break the ice. Although many locals speak English, the more you know of the native language, the greater your experience of the country will be.
  • Carry a business card in your wallet or purse from your local hotel, to assist you with the return journey if you do become lost.
  • Always ensure that you are covered by travel insurance. If you need advice on this feel free to contact Odyssey and we’ll be able to help.
  • When travelling independently, make sure you check the opening hours of shops and museums so that you don’t miss out! Museums and galleries are often closed on Mondays. Also be certain to check whether your trip coincides with any public holidays, so you can plan accordingly.
  • Consider contacting your bank to inform them that you may be making purchases overseas. Otherwise, they may flag any activity on your account as suspicious. Also, check which ATMs and banks are compatible with your cards, to ensure you can withdraw cash with minimal fees.
  • Before departing, make sure you have a number of US dollars in a range of denominations. You don’t want to be carrying around enormous amounts of cash, but take enough to make it easy to pay in locations that might not accept credit card.

What people love about Ecuador Tours

This was a great tour, the galápagos is amazing! G-adventure has a well organized tour. There are some early morning days but they don't matter because you are in the Galápagos! The rooms are basic but have air conditioning which is good since it is very hot there. José was a fantastic guide and had so much knowledge about the islands. Definitely choose the add-on snorkeling trips they are worth it. I think the Galápagos needs to be on everyone's list.
Amazing experience, and our guide was so knowledgeable and resourceful.
Absolutely memorable experience with Responsible Travel Agency! Their attention to detail and personal approach made my trip unforgettable. From customised itineraries like a small hike in Chimborazo to helpful tips along the way, they went above and beyond to ensure every aspect of the journey was comfortable and also will help if some unexpected changes happen during the trip. Thank you Santiago for a great time and friendly approach for arranging this tour!

"This experience was awesome! The itinerary was mostly kept, we were kept informed if there were adjustments. The only real issue was a minor one when refueling required took longer than expected on Day 8, so we had a bit less time in the touristy city of Santa Cruz... which I didn't mind (saved a bit of money). We saw every animal we came to see and much more. We snorkeled with sharks, sea lions and stingrays! Our guide (Jacinto) was excellent, even helping my wife with snorkeling, as she was a bit reticent at first. My only suggestion is to bring a lot of cash. They don't take credit cards on board for expenses (drinks, wetsuits, etc.).
