Customizable Itinerary
Toledo - arrive in spain and enjoy toledo.
The medieval city of Toledo will create the timeless ambiance as you imagine knights and nobles wandering the preserved cobbled lanes that overlook the waters of the Tajo River. The cultural synthesis between the Jewish, Muslim, and Christian communities has been preserved in mosques with horseshoe arches, glamorous Sephardic synagogues, and dramatic Gothic cathedrals. Your flight will land in Madrid’s Barajas International Airport, where your private transfer will meet you at customs. Once in Toledo, you can settle into the charm of the city and the luxuries of your hotel. You can also visit the 13th-century Moorish Bridge and 18th-century Baroque gateway.
What's Included:
Toledo - Discover Historic Toledo
Your guide will meet you at the hotel and lead you on an immersive tour of the medieval city. The sound of the river will filter through the streets as you venture to the Cathedral of Toledo to view the remarkable Gothic design. Light will filter through the rose windows while the flying buttresses and ribbed vaults provide atmospheric details. The sacristy displays art by Renaissance masters, including Velazquez and El Greco. At the Church of Santo Tome, you can find the faint aroma of incense accentuating the fascinating masterpiece of El Greco’s The Burial of the Count of Orgaz.
Almagro - Windmill Road Trip
You will further explore the regional home of Don Quixote de la Mancha as you drive through the scenic countryside. Windmills crown the lush rolling hills. As you pass, you can wait to see if they turn to dragons. Twelve windmills border the preserved 12th-century stronghold of Consuegra. As you travel along the rural road, set beneath the expansive sky, you can easily imagine Don Quixote mistaking a local inn for a castle. In Puerto Lapice, you can find hints of Roman settlements accompanying the point at which Don Quixote dueled in the battle of the windmills.
Almagro - Explore Beautiful Almagro
The charm of Almagro emanates from the cobblestones and lively ambiance of Plaza Mayor. Tapas bars line the square with trimmed greenery adorning the facades. Locals enjoy their morning coffee while the theater museum’s doors reveal the importance of Almagro in Spain’s theatrical development. Your guide will take you through the enchanting town to reach the 17th-century Corral de Comedias, the oldest theater in Spain. Wooden balconies face the original stage, and costumed actors provide the history of the theater. At Teatro Municipal, you will find an elliptical stadium from the 19th century supporting 800 spectators.
Alarcon - Medieval Alarcon
The serene medieval town of Alarcon offers seductive charm on the banks of the Jucar River, which forms a natural moat. Before reaching the three defensive arches acting as an entrance to the city, you can stop at Argamasilla de Alba. The town possesses the Casa Cueva Medrano that served as a prison for Miguel de Cervantes, inspiring in part the story of Don Quixote. Once in Alarcon, you can discover the marvel of the 8th-century castle with Islamic flourish. Five exterior towers and the powerful ramparts act as the town’s defenses.
Cuenca - The Hanging Houses of Cuenca
You will travel to Cuenca to find colorful stacked houses evoking the wonders of medieval architecture rising along the steep promontory. Two rivers shape the steep gorges beneath the town as you reach the meandering cobbled lanes and narrow houses with wooden balconies. The houses hang over the cliffs overlooking the rushing waters below with the antique architecture juxtaposing the town’s connection to abstract modern art. The hanging houses date back to the 14th century and look as though they emerge from the stone. The interior possesses an airy gallery displaying works by Fernando Zobel and Antoni Tapies.
Albarracin - Enjoy the Most Beautiful Town in Spain
The authenticity of Albarracin’s twisting narrow streets and wooden balconies bring to life the dreams of Don Quixote. Pink facades glint in the sunlight behind picturesque fortifications on a rocky promontory above the Guadalaviar River. You can wander the Castle that crowns the village with foundations dating back to the 9th century. The twelve towers soar above the perimeter walls joining the skyline with the 16th-century Salvador Cathedral. The bare pine altarpiece represents the life of St. Peter. You can climb the tallest tower in town, the 10th-century Torre del Andador, for a panorama of the surrounding countryside and walls.
Siguenza - Traverse Historic Siguenza
After settling into the opulence of your historic hotel set inside a medieval castle, you can indulge in the traditions of Siguenza. The jewel of a town was once a Celtic settlement and now enjoys a sleepy ambiance set against the low hill shaped by the Henares River. The scent of churros and cinnamon fill the 16th-century Plaza Mayor while the Gothic-Mudejar design of Casa del Doncel reflects a dynamic history. The medieval castle represents the layers of heritage in town with ancient Roman foundations, Moorish flair, and time used as a royal palace, an asylum, and army barracks.
Siguenza - Delight in El Monasterio de Piedra
You will journey to the remarkable 13th-century Piedra Monastery in the morning to find the remains of an old Moorish castle, repurposed into a Christian place of worship. The conservative design of the passages reflects the transition between Romanesque to Gothic Cistercian aesthetics. Thick stone masonry protects eight centuries of history, including a wine museum dedicated to the vines and wines cultivated on the Calatayud Wine Route. After wandering through the Romantique world reminiscent of Don Quixote’s daydreams, you can enjoy a tranquil immersion into the Nature Park where the roiling sounds of the Piedra Monastery waterfalls echo through the lush forest.
Madrid - Visit Alcala de Henares en route to Madrid
After arriving in Alcala de Henares, you will discover the fascinating home of Miguel de Cervantes. The town buzzes with literary history and mouthwatering tapas. Cervantes’s home is now a museum and features artifacts from the author’s early life between the 16th and 17th centuries, including furniture and artwork. Statues of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza adorn a bench outside of the museum. The University of Alcala dates back to the 13th century and evokes a historical atmosphere in the heart of town. The picturesque 12th-century boulevard of Calle Mayor possesses charming 18th-century pillars framing bakeries, restaurants, and boutiques.
Madrid - Art in the Capital City
Your day will fill with the artistic wonders of Spain and Europe when you head to the renowned Reina Sofia Museum. The galleries brim with masterpieces of Spanish contemporary art with the likes of Dali, Miro, and Picasso. The museum hosts Picasso’s Guernica, a 1937 piece condemning the Nazi bombing of the Basque town. At the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum, you will find over 1,000 European works from the 13th to the late 20th centuries, including Monet’s Charing Cross Bridge and El Greco’s Annunciation. In the afternoon, you can enjoy the bustling pace and charm of Spain’s capital city.
Madrid - Revel in a Free Day and Flamenco
The scent of rich chocolate and fresh churros will fill the 17th-century Plaza Mayor in the morning. The day will be yours to enjoy Madrid at your preferred pace. You can visit Kilometer Zero in Puerta del Sol to find the point from which all distances on Spain’s road network are measured. You can also discover the ancient Egyptian temple in La Montana Park, which was brought from Aswan and dates to the 2nd century BC. In the evening, the rhythm and passion of flamenco will captivate you as you witness the fascinating combination of music and movement.
Madrid - Depart for Home
In the morning, life will return to the bustling Gran Via, where the iconic Telefonica Building soars above the streets at 290 feet tall. The sunlight will filter through the windows of the San Antoni de la Florida Hermitage. The charming chapel behind the Royal Palace houses some of Goya’s finest frescoes, including the miracle performed by Saint Anthony. Your private transfer will meet you at the hotel when you are ready and escort you to the airport for your flight home, bringing an end to your novel exploration of Spain.

The Don Quixote Route: All You Need to Know to Plan an Epic Road Trip
Posted by Anna | Jan 14, 2021 | Castile-La Mancha , Spain in Movies | 8
Have you ever heard of the Don Quixote Route? If you could pick only one thing that represents Spain internationally, what would it be? – I do realize that your mind might actually roll around fiesta , siesta , sangria , or even the bullfight s. But you won´t give me an argument on this: there´s nothing as authentically Spanish as “Don Quixote”, a worldwide-famous Spanish novel of Miguel de Cervantes. How about a book-themed road trip through the Spanish region of Castile-La Mancha?

Top Don Quixote Landmarks in Spain
The don quixote route: all you need to know, the don quixote book.
Who’s not familiar with one of the world’s best-selling books of all times (500 million copies), an emblematic prototype of a modern novel . Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes is an iconic read many of us might have underrated back at school (or at least I did, and I used to be a bookworm). So, in case this tale of a Spanish knight driven mad and the story of his incredible adventures simply didn´t get under your skin before, now is about the time you should reconsider adding Don Quixote to your list of wanderlust books .
Don Quixote was originally published in Spanish in two parts (1605, 1615) and is currently known as one of the most important books of all time. It was translated into more than 50 languages , being the second most translated book ever (after the Bible). Don Quixote has inspired an appearance of a new adjective “ quixotic “, used to mean the impractical pursuit of idealistic goals, something extremely unrealistic.

The plot rolls around an aging minor nobleman Alonso Quixano, who sets out from his home village of La Mancha in search of adventures. He recruits peasant Sancho Panza to be his squire and the pair gets into a series of misadventures, aiming to live something exciting and dangerous. It seems impossible in the quiet Spanish countryside, but not for Don Quixote. Even local windmills end up being gigantic knights to combat with.
The Don Quixote Watch List
Even if you don’t have time to read a book right now, consider at least some movie and stage adaptations, like the Broadway musical Man of La Mancha (1965), a movie Man of La Mancha (1972) with Sophia Loren, and a classical Spanish film Don Quijote (1947). For kids, there´s a series of Spanish cartoons Don Quijote de La Mancha (1979) with 39 episodes and entertaining music by Antonio Areta.
What could possibly feel more adventurous than following the footsteps of the most famous literary character in Spain? There´s no actual Don Quixote Route marked on the Spanish maps (like El Camino de Santiago , for instance), but there are lots of places associated with the iconic story of the Spanish knight and its famous author Miguel de Cervantes. You can channel your inner adventurer and explorer (a lot like in my Christopher Columbus post ) and create your own travel route with some of the most iconic Spanish landmarks .
The Castile-La Mancha Region
Castile-La Mancha should be on your list of must-do road trips in Spain. The Don Quixote Route is simply a perfect excuse to start exploring Spain and its culture in depth. You actually learn to touch, feel and understand any culture by learning about its national heroes.

Here in Spain, we say we speak “ el castellano ” and not “ el español”, because even the language itself originated in the VII century in the Castile-La Mancha region .
Useful info:
- Castile-la Mancha is located in central Spain and consists of the provinces of Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara, and Toledo
- Bus, train, vs. car : most of the small towns in the Castile-La Mancha region are connected by bus (some by train), but in order to save time and travel efficiently I´d recommend renting a car
- When to visit? You can visit the Castile-La Mancha region at any time of the year, but keep in mind that summers are too hot with nowhere to hide away from the sun, as the landscape is mainly plane. I’ve also once traveled through Castile-La Mancha in January and it was freezing, rainy, and foggy. Therefore, I´d suggest late-Spring or early-Autumn for your Don Quixote Route.
- The nearest airport is Madrid (or Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas)
- The list of main stops on the Don Quixote Route: El Toboso – Campo de Criptana – Alcazar de San Juan – Puerto Lapice – Cuidad Real – Villanueva de los Infantes – Lagunas de Ruidera – Argamasilla De Alba
- Food: Castile-La Mancha region is famous for its Manchego cheese . The most typical local dishes to try include Migas (bread crumbs), Gachas , Asadillo , Tiznao
- You will notice that many houses in the Castile-La Mancha region are painted white and indigo blue . The white helps with the summer heat and the indigo blue reflects the Mediterranean influence.
Must-stops of the Don Quixote Route
1. el toboso.
The small town of Toboso is a special location on the Don Quixote Route, as it was a hometown of Don Quixote’s love – Dulcinea. At Plaza Mayor you’ll find a monument dedicated to Dulcinea and Don Quixote . Here, you can also visit Museo-Casa de Dulcinea and Museo Cervantino , with numerous editions of Cervantes´ work in more than 70 different languages.
2. Campo de Criptana
The windmills of Campo de Criptana or the Don Quixote Windmills are often included on the list of the most famous landmarks in Spain. In the book, these were the gigantic knights Don Quixote was fighting with.
3. Alcazar de San Juan
Alcazar de San Juan is another important stop on the Don Quixote Route connected with the book’s author, Miguel de Cervantes. The locals claim that he was baptized in the church of Santa María la Mayor .
Here, you can also visit the Hidalgo House Museum and the Cervantes Visitor Centre .
4. Puerto Lapice
Puerto Lapice is mentioned quite a few times in El Quijote . Here, you can find the famous inn, Venta del Quijote , which Don Quixote mistook for a castle, and then the keeper pretended to make him a knight. Nowadays it’s a popular restaurant with a small museum, full of illustrations of Don Quixote, made by artists from all around the world.
5. Cuidad Real
Another town mentioned in the Quijote book is Cuidad Real. Here, you should not miss Reloj Carillon (the clock with automatic figures of Cervantes, Sancho Panza, and Don Quixote), Museo de Quijote/Biblioteca Cervantina , Fuente Talaverana (a fontain area full of decorations for ceramic lovers, depicting the scenes from the Don Quixote book).
6. Villanueva de los Infantes
Villanueva de los Infantes is one of the most beautiful secret villages in Spain you’ve probably never heard of. It is definitely the gem of the Castile-La Mancha region . No wonder Miguel de Cervantes has made it a Don Quijote´s home in the book (although it’s not mentioned directly, rather concluded by scientists: so there´s still a debate around it).
There´s a monument to Don Quijote and Sancho Panza at the Plaza Mayor square.

This small town is full of beautiful architecture : Convento de Santo Domingo , El Hospital de Santiago , Casa del Arco , La Casa de los Estudios , Tribunal de la Inquisicion , Cervantes street, Plaza de San Juan , Casa Palacio de Marques de Entrambasaguas.
7. Lagunas de Ruidera
The Lagunas de Ruidera Natural Park is one of the most beautiful national landmarks in Spain, a must-stop on the famous Don Quixjote Route, a hidden oasis in the heart of vast meadows of Castile-La Mancha.
In Lagunas de Ruidera Natural Park you´ll find the Cave of Montesinos , where Don Quixote spends a night in the book. You can also visit the Peñaroya castle nearby.
8. Argamansilla de Alba
Not so many people know that the famous novel Don Quixote was written by Miguel de Cervantes during his imprisonment in Cueva Medrano ( Merrano House and Cave) in Argamansilla de Alba.
Some argue that Argamansilla de Alba was the home town of Don Quixote, but I personally like the version of Villanueva de los Infantes better.
More places related to Miguel de Cervantes:
- Alcalá de Henares (Here, Miguel de Cervantes was born and you can pay a visit to the Cervantes Birthplace House-Museum) In early October the town of Alcalá de Henares celebrates Cervantes Week.
- Esquivias in the Toledo province (a small town where Cervantes wife was born and both of them lived together for a while, so there´s another Cervantes House Museum, open to the public)
- The Convent of Las Trinitarias Descalzas in Madrid (here, you can visit the funerary monument to Miguel de Cervantes)
Places and experiences you can combine with this road trip
- The Province of Cuenca ( don´t miss The Hanging Houses of Cuenca, one of the dreamiest Spanish Castles Belmonte, Tunel Alfonso VIII, Ruta de las Caras, and The Enchanted City of Cuenca )
- Alcala del Jucar (considered one of the most beautiful small towns in Spain)
- Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park

Thank you for sharing all of this!!!
I had no idea the book was that popular! I’d love to read the book and then go on this road trip!
Wow, I saw Man of La Mancha when I was younger. This would be such a great trip, I’d definitely read the book before.
This is an excellent guide! I absolutely LOVE road trips and always try to incorporate at least a small one (half-day or day trip) into my travels. It’s a wonderful way to experience more authenticity from an area, I think. The windmills in the first photo are dreamy!
I’m ashamed to say I’ve never read Don Quixote. But after reading this post, I’m definitely adding it to my list of things to read. I had no idea it was the second most translated book of all time, or that words were created based on “Quixote”!
What a fab guide! I’m an avid book lover (and ex- bookseller and literature student) and somehow I’ve still never got round to reading Don Quixote! I love literature-themed travel though and this looks like one epic road trip! Given we’re still stuck in lockdown, it seems like the ideal opportunity to get some reading done and start planning a future visit. Thanks for the great guide!
This was one of my favorite books as a child, so it would be a dream to plan a trip like this. Maybe for after lockdown!
I loved this post! We visited the windmills last year but didn’t have time to stop at the rest of these sites.

Travel through Spain in the Footsteps of Don Quixote
But what if there was a way teachers could change all that? They could make reading in Spanish fun while at the same time have the book come to life before their eyes.
Taking your students on the route Don Quixote and his trusty squire, Sancho Panza, took is not only a unique way to see some of Spain’s main attractions but a way to bring the novel to life, learn about the country’s culture and learn the language.
The journey our hero took was long and tumultuous, well over 600 miles, so below are the top four places to go, see and explore. ¡Vámonos!
The Region of Castile-La Mancha
We start out in the country side of Castile-La Mancha, Don Quixote’s beautiful homeland. Most of your journey will take place in this vast region that is widely known for its artwork, decadent food and medieval castles.
A Pastoral Plain in Cabaneros National Park
Apart from being the starting point of our main character’s adventure, Castile-La Mancha is a favorite spot with nature lovers . Throughout the region you will find some of the largest designated nature reserves, nature areas and national parks in Europe. This makes the entire region a great place to hike, explore or just sit back with a picnic lunch and enjoy the landscape.
A perfect spot to visit is Cabañeros National Park . Located between the provinces of Toledo and Ciudad Real in Castile-La Mancha, it offers vast mountain ranges and expansive meadows just waiting to be explored. Take a walking tour of the land or rent 4×4 vehicles for a truly unique experience. This is also one of the only spots in the entire world where you can see endemic species including many exotic birds, reptiles, mammals, and amphibians.

Next stop on the tour is the town of Consuegra. The windmills are the eye-catching sight here and the symbol of La Mancha itself. Any fan of the novel knows the windmills inspired Cervantes so much he included them in his tale. Known in the famous scene where Don Quixote and his squire attack the windmills, wrongly mistaking them for monsters, this spot draws tourists from all over the world.
The 12 windmills dating back to the 16th century still stand tall today and have exhibits tourists can visit. Surrounded by wide open plains and small mountain ranges, you will feel like you are Don Quixote himself.
The windmills and nearby Medieval Castle, Photo credit: Tourist Office of Spain in Chicago
If looking to venture away from the windmills and make a day out of Consuegra, then tour the nearby medieval castle , churches and museums .
If feeling more adventurous, head for Puerto Lápice , just a 15 minute car ride away. Puerto Lápice one of the few towns actually named in the novel and where Don Quixote spent the night at an inn. Walk the very streets Cervantes wrote about in his novel or even spend the night. Your group will find many inns in town that all claim to be the spot where our hero was knighted.
Not too far from Consuegra is El Toboso, where readers can see the House of Dulcinea , Don Quixote’s love interest.
Statues Dedicated to Don Quixote and Dulcinea in Toboso
The home dates back to the 18th century and was renovated as a farm house for tourist groups. According to tradition, it once belonged to Doña Ana Martínez Zarco de Morales, known as the inspiration for Dulcinea’s character.
Not only can students learn about the architecture while at this historic spot, but they will see what a typical day was like in the 17th century for people in La Mancha. The museum features everyday tools and furniture and also the biggest olive oil presses in the region.
The City of Toledo
A trip to Spain would not be complete without taking your students to the wonderful city of Toledo. Known for its rich architecture , history and art , Toledo has something for everyone and it’s on the route our hero traveled.
Toledo Cathedral Photo Courtesy of Tourist Office of Spain in Chicago
While in Toledo, explore the well-known Toledo cathedral , built in the 13th century by King Fernando III. Here students have the opportunity to learn about the country’s religious history including how the cathedral was actually built on top of a Muslim mosque and only became a Christian church in the 19th century.
For the more artistic and creative students, Toledo is perfect. The Toledo cathedral is full of traditional Spanish Gothic artwork from the 16th century, including a large room called the “ Ochavo .” Around the room are historical works of art that are dedicated to “the martyrs and the witnesses of Christ.” Some of the works include the reliquary of San Luis, a bust of St. John the Baptist and the cross of Cardinal Mendoza. Works by famed artists such as Lucas Jordan and El Greco can also be viewed in the main sacristy.
If planning the trip for this year, then you’re in luck, as 2014 just so happens to be the Year of El Greco , which marks the 400th anniversary of the artist’s death with the displays of his work all over Spain. In The El Greco Museum in Toledo , see renowned works like “The Tears of Saint Peter,” “The Altarpiece of San Bernardino” and “View and Plan of Toledo.” Locals are honoring El Greco this year with concerts, theater performances and dances all around the city where the artist once lived.
El Greco’s “View of Toledo” Captures the Beauty of the City
Traveling through Eastern Spain in the footsteps of Don Quixote, students not only will learn more about the novel but also the culture of Spain and the rich history it has to offer.

Don quixote tour.
He thereupon commended himself with all his heart to his lady Dulcinea, beseeching her to succor him in this peril; and, being well covered with his shield and with his lance at rest, he bore down upon them at a full gallop and fell upon the first mill that stood in his way, giving a thrust at the wing, which was whirling at such a speed that his lance was broken into bits and both horse and horseman went rolling over the plain, very much battered indeed…”

Alcalá de Henares, a small city located barely 40km away from Madrid was the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes , author of Don Quixote.
The university and the old town are both part of the UNESCO Heritage Sites. The University was founded in the 16 th century and the city of Alcalá became the first planned university city in the world. Many cities in Europe and in the world followed it as a model.

The Calle Mayor has witnessed the social and economic life since the 12 th century and it is the best preserved medieval arched street in Spain.
In this street you will find Cervantes’ Birthplace Museum where you will learn about his early years and also how the daily life of people back in the 16 th and 17 th century looked like.
After visiting the city and contextualizing the unique life of Miguel de Cervantes , begin the route through the main landmarks of Don Quixote.
Visit some of the most characteristic and legendary villages of La Mancha . Of course, stopping at the famous windmills, which were the object of Don Quixote’s battle against the giants.
These villages still retain their original charm with their whitewashed houses and interior courtyards, as well as their palaces and castles. The traditions of our noble knight are present throughout the route.
Visit Argamasilla de Alba , where Miguel de Cervantes was imprisoned. Legend has it that it was precisely while he was deprived of his freedom that he wrote Don Quixote.

Pass through the Lagunas de Ruidera National Park , designated by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve and Special Protection Area for Birds.
We also recommend a visit to Tomelloso. Although there are many towns that claim the honor of being that “Somewhere in La Mancha, in a place whose name I do not care to remember,” mentioned by Cervantes in his renowned novel, experts and literary critics agree that that place in La Mancha is Tomelloso.
Finish the day in Campo de Criptana, famous for having 10 windmills in its municipality. The windmill of Burleta is the best preserved in the region.
