Queen Mary Long Beach, California

Southern California’s spookiest Halloween event will begin on Friday, September 20th, 2024, and continue on select nights until Saturday, November 2nd, 2024.

Dark Harbor at the Queen Mary in Long Beach is Southern California’s most terrifying Halloween event. The event features four mazes on the ship and three on land. In addition, numerous monsters are scattered throughout the port of purgatory, whose sole purpose is to give you a good scare. The mazes at Dark Harbor theme park include Deadrise. If you’re brave enough to enter, be warned that you may find yourself desperate to leave once inside this haunted inferno. The Submerged Maze is set on a sinking ship, and as you try to escape, you’ll discover there’s more to fear than just drowning.

Dark Harbor Sinister Swings

Circus Big Top Terror Show

“Join Circus Big Top Terror for a night of spine-chilling horror as you run away with the circus and become part of the most sinister group of monsters under the tent. As you journey through the maze, you’ll encounter a variety of sideshow freaks, each more grotesque than the last. This is not your ordinary circus experience.

“Feast” Dark Harbor

Feast is another terrifying attraction taking place aboard the Queen Mary. Explore new areas that have never been open to Dark Harbor guests before. The Chef and his evil stowaways are concocting new ways to scare you and collecting victims for their dark recipes. Don’t miss out on this bone-chilling experience.”

Queen Mary Halloween Mazes

Dark Harbor Mazes

We’re completing the list of Dark Harbor mazes. Brave souls can board the hell train, explore the Lullaby maze, and experience Soulmate Til Death Does Us Part. Additionally, a maze goes by the name of B340, taking visitors into madness. Monster Midway is an outdoor area with demons featuring live bands, food, and cocktails. One of the must-see attractions in the midway is the Sinister Swings. These rotating swings were originally from Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch and take visitors on a terrifying ride.

Main Stage Shows

The Main Stage in the Midway area hosts magic shows, stage performances, and a monster dance party finale. The Voodoo Village stage features circus shows and fire-breathing acts. Dark Harbor is a massive Halloween festival that takes place on The Queen Mary and the surrounding harbor.

This year’s event will feature a variety of exciting activities such as haunted mazes, live entertainment, themed bars and lounges, experiences on-board the ship, delicious festive eats and treats, and the return of well-known icons including the Captain, Ringmaster, and Scary Mary. In 2024, the event will bring back some fan favorites from the past and introduce many new surprises as well.

Long Beach’s historic World War II-era ship, the Queen Mary, finally reopened for public tours on Saturday, April 1, after a three-year closure — marking the first event in what officials say will be a grand reopening slated to kick off in the coming weeks.

Groups of about 30 people each gathered on the ship’s Promenade Deck starting at about 11 a.m. on Saturday to partake in their choice of three different tours: The Glory Days Historical Tour, the Haunted Encounters Tour and the Steam & Steel Tour — each which take about an hour and are available until 6 p.m. daily.

For some, including Gail Hurst — a tourist from England — Saturday’s reopening offered a chance to experience the ship for the first time. Hurst and her husband decided to visit the Queen Mary on a whim, as their trip with Princess Cruise Line boarded just across the parking lot from the vessel.

“My mom and dad had their 40th wedding anniversary on it — so we got to see where they were for the first time,” Hurst said in an interview after disembarking from her tour of the ship. “It was fabulous. We plan (to visit again) if we ever come to America.”

The ship’s operators, Evolution Hospitality, initially announced that the ship would re-open to the public earlier this week.

Long Beach city officials and Evolution, which took over the ship’s day-to-day management last June, have been working to revitalize the vessel after it fell into massive disrepair under its previous operator, Urban Commons.

The Queen Mary initially closed to the public because of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 — but a 2021 city audit found that Urban Commons had not completed $23 million dollars worth of repairs, which the city had funded. Urban Commons forfeited its 66-year lease on the ship that same year, bringing the Queen Mary back under city control for the first time in nearly 40 years.

After the City Council approved the new management contract with Evolution last year, both found that several critical repairs needed to be completed before the Queen Mary could reopen to the public. Those included replacing the ship’s boilers, elevators and restrooms, repairing the plumbing, and upgrading parking.

Those fixes have been underway since last year — but are finally close to being finished, according to Steve Caloca, the Queen Mary’s managing director.

The installation of new boilers, heat exchangers, and a new emergency generator — which are necessary to have hot water on board and ensure the ship’s safety in the case of an emergency — should be complete within the next few days, Caloca said in a Saturday interview.

And other repairs — including aesthetic fixes all around the Queen Mary — are currently underway.

“All of the main hall floor is going to be redone,” Caloca siad. “The Promenade Deck, all of those those floors, have been restored to the original teak  — and we probably have just another 200 feet to go.”

But the ongoing nature of those repairs didn’t seem to bother 7-year-old Tristan Rodriguez — whose fascination with ships prompted his parents book a time slot on the Steam & Steel tour on Saturday afternoon.

“We’ve been checking in on the refurbishment just because he (Tristan) got really interested and wanted to come and see this,” Tristan’s mom, Elianny Rodriguez, said. “We kept checking back and just waiting for it to reopen.”

The younger Rodriguez has been fascinated with all things engineering since he was just two-years-old, according to his mom. He’s gone so far as to create piece-by-piece replicas of famous ships — including the Queen Mary — in Minecraft from scratch, a skill he picked up by watching YouTube tutorials.

“We wanted to check out like the steam engine when (Tristan) saw the tour because we knew how much he was into them,” Rodriguez said, “And (we knew) it would teach us facts about certain ships that we weren’t even aware of so we could talk about it with him.”

He said he loves ships so much because “they float and they have lots of stuff deep” within them — and he likes learning how they work.

“The propellers push the ship and they also steer,” Tristan said, pointing out where the propellors are located on his model of the ship — shortly before letting out a yell of excitement and taking a brief run around the ship’s Observation Deck.

The Rodriguez’s, meanwhile, said they’re all excited to come back soon to visit the ship.

Evolution and the city, meanwhile, are planning to open up other parts of the ship — including the restaurants and bars — soon, though a date has yet to be confirmed. The Queen Mary Hotel, while not quite open yet, is currently accepting room reservations for stays starting in May.

“Thousands of people have already signed up to stay here or to experience a tour within days of reopening registration,” Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson said on Saturday. “There’s a lot of progress, but there’s still a lot of work to do — in the weeks to come, there’ll be more and more things opened.

“But bottom line,” Richardson added, “The Queen Mary’s best days are ahead.”

Insider’s Guide to The Queen Mary

In 1967, the Queen Mary completed her final voyage from Southampton, docking in Long Beach, California, where she remains permanently moored.

In the years since, the nearly one-century-old ocean liner has been transformed into a historic hotel and one of Long Beach’s top attractions, welcoming visitors to explore its storied halls and learn of the ship’s history through tours and onboard exhibits.

History of The Queen Mary

The RMS Queen Mary was constructed in Scotland for Cunard-White Star Line by shipbuilding firm John Brown & Company. Her maiden voyage was in May of 1936, and in August of that year she would go on to win the Blue Riband — an accolade for transatlantic passenger liners with the highest average speeds.

Named for Mary of Teck — wife of King George V and Queen of the United Kingdom and Empress of India from 1910-1936 — the Queen Mary featured a grand Art Deco design that swept throughout the ship, with decor fashioned from over 50 different types of wood from around the globe. Luxurious onboard amenities included two indoor swimming pools, a music studio, libraries, paddle tennis courts and telephone service that could connect callers to anywhere in the world. The cabin class main dining room, which spanned three decks in height, even featured a motorized crystal model of the ship that would track the journey’s process.

Her status as a passenger liner was short-lived, with the onset of World War II resulting in the ship’s conversion to troopship for Allied soldiers. Following the war, the Queen Mary once again began shuttling passengers back-and-forth across the Atlantic ocean.

The late 1950s saw the arrival of the jet age, resulting in the decrease of demand for sea travel and inevitably leading to the retirement of the Queen Mary in the late 1960s. During her service, the Queen Mary transported over 2 million passengers, and approximately 810,000 members of the military during World War II.

The Queen Mary was purchased by the City of Long Beach in 1967, who then worked to transform the vessel into a hotel, museum and event space.

After several ownership transitions and multiple iterations of tourism experiences, the Queen Mary was closed in May of 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, the lease for the Queen Mary was surrendered back to the City of Long Beach, who has since begun repairs to restore the ship back to its original glory. For updates on the restoration progress, including how you can obtain pieces of the historic boat, follow the ship’s official Instagram , Twitter and Facebook .

Tours & Exhibits

The Queen Mary offers daily public tours and welcomes visitors onboard to learn more about the ship’s nearly 100-year history via exhibits and scheduled tours .

Engineering aficionados will enjoy The Steam and Steel Tour, which descends into the depths of the ship’s boiler and generator rooms to share how the Queen Mary was powered across the Atlantic. The Glory Days experience thrusts visitors through time, highlighting the liner’s extensive history as a passenger vessel and wartime asset. The Cunard Story exhibition traces the history of the Cunard-White Star Line, for whom the Queen Mary sailed all those years ago.

The Queen Mary is open for public tours. Tours include the Glory Days Historical Tour, Steam and Steel Tour, & Haunted Encounters Tour. Follow Visit Long Beach on Twitter , Facebook and Instagram for the latest updates and other trip inspiration.

The Queen Mary remains one of the most historic and unique accommodations available in southern California. Travelers can choose to stay in one of the more than 300 original first class staterooms found throughout the now full-service hotel. The ship's interior has been carefully preserved, offering guests a rare glimpse at what first class accommodations were like aboard an ocean liner in the mid-20th century.

Complete with functioning portholes and original artwork, room options on the Queen Mary range from full suites — the most spacious and luxurious of accommodations, with a private room and breakfast nook — to the popular deluxe stateroom, which blends stately Art Deco elements with modern amenities. Family staterooms, standard staterooms and even mini suites are also available, as is the storied “Stateroom B340,” known for its long record of alleged paranormal activity.

Bars & Restaurants

The Queen Mary is home to a number of unique dining options that continue the ocean liner’s legacy of providing a memorable culinary experience for all passengers — or, in this case, hotel guests and visitors.

The sophisticated Sir Winston’s Restaurant & Lounge pairs a fine-dining experience with panoramic, picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean. For more casual fare, the Chelsea Chowder House & Bar is perfect for families looking to enjoy seafood and British-inspired cuisine. A grab-and-go marketplace on the port side of the Promenade Deck features coffee, sandwiches and snacks, while a 30s-inspired former first-class lounge now serves as a chic bar serving craft cocktails, beer and wine.

Weddings, Meetings & Private Events

One of the most unique venue options in southern California for meetings, social gatherings, and weddings, the Queen Mary can accommodate upwards of 800 attendees in 80,000 square feet of event space that spans 14 distinct Art Deco areas.

Choose from spaces as small as 522 square feet, or larger areas with lofty, 33-foot ceilings. The regal Grand Salon accommodates up to 700 guests in an elegant, 9,000-square-foot space on the R Deck, while the smaller Royal Salon & King’s View offers stunning views of downtown Long Beach and the Pacific Ocean from what was once a first-class smoking lounge.

Event planning, on-site support and A/V assistance come standard with the Queen Mary’s event services offerings, and the storied ship has been updated with the latest technology to deliver a modern event experience in the heart of a 1930’s cruise liner. Additional services include catering coordination, event production and even activity planning — offering your guests bespoke tours of the historic ship.

Upcoming Events

Queen Mary sets the perfect scene for a variety of year-round events , featuring concerts, comedic performances, and more. From wine nights to fireworks on the 4th of July, there is no shortage of unforgettable happenings on this sophisticated ocean liner. Recurring events include karaoke sessions, afternoon tea, Sunday brunch with live music, and art and wine nights.

Your Winter Guide to CHILL at the Queen Mary + Discounted Tickets

Posted by Caryn Bailey Leave a Comment

In just one week, our kids will be out of school for their winter break and we have lots of exciting activities planned for them. It’s winter here in Southern California, and since we don’t get snow or ice, we thought we’d take our kids to the coldest place we know: CHILL at the Queen Mary , now taking place in Long Beach, California.

Chill at the Queen Mary

CHILL at the Queen Mary

The Queen Mary introduced this “chilly” event five years ago, and it has become one of Southern California’s favorite winter activities!  Here is a brief overview of what you can expect at this year’s brand new frozen, winter wonderland:

Ice Skating at CHILL

Explore the Ice Adventure Park:  This year, Chill introduced the first -ever 38,000 square foot Ice Adventure Park which features ice skating, an Ice Track, ice tricycles, Amsterdam Bumper Boats, Shangahai Speedway, a Zip Line, Ice Shuffleboard, and a two-story, 140-foot-long Ice Tubing Slide. Additionally, this experience celebrates Christmas traditions from six regions across the globe.

Gourmet Food at CHILL at the Queen Mary

Experience an Authentic German Market: After noshing on gourmet pretzels, Bratwurst, and ginger beer, walk through the famous Munich Market and make a wish at Gnome’s Wishing Well. Dining options include the Twisted Pretzel Pub & Tasting Room and Brat Haus.

Swiss Meatballs

Get Cozy inside the Swiss Alpine Lodge: Warm up inside the lodge with roasted marshmallows and build-your-own s’mores or indulge in Swiss cheese and chocolate fondue at Alpine Square.  Families can also opt to dine at the Alpine Cafe, which serves traditional Swiss bites or celebrate the season with festive cocktails in the exclusive Pinnacle Chalet Bar. The bar overlooks Matterhorn Mountain’s two-story, six-lane tubing slide. Don’t leave without taking some Romeo Chocolates at the Swiss Chocolatier!

Chinese Dumplings

Get Ready for Chinese New Year!  Take a walk down Lantern Lane and experience traditional Lion Dances, the Shanghai Speedway, Chinese Lantern decorating, and fireworks. Sip a cup of traditional tea inside the Zen Teahouse or awaken your taste buds with dumplings at Dim Sum Delight.

Father Frost and The Princess

Celebrate Russia’s Holiday Season: Dance under the Northern Lights Show, then warm up at the Russian Pierogi Paradise or the Stroganoff and Stew Pot. Each venue offers traditional Russian fare such as Stroganoff and Potato Dumplings. You can also make it a date night at the 12 Degree Pinnacle Cathedral Ice Bar which features Moscow’s Basil Cathedral and vodka flights from around the globe.

Holland

Take a Twirl Around Holland’s Outdoor Ice Skating Village: Enjoy live shows, private chalets, and Windmill Way, which features gourmet donuts and pancakes at the Dutch Pantry. If you love breakfast for dinner, check out Windmill Waffle House’s breakfast buffet or walk up to the Breakfast Bar window to enjoy Mistletoe Fizz or a bacon-infused Siracha Bloody Mary.

North Pole at CHILL

Visit Santa and Mrs. Claus at the North Pole:  Once you’ve gotten your “CHILL” on, build your own stocking with Santa’s elves and feel the spirit of the season with liquid candy at the Candy Bar.

Chillettes at CHILL

Rock Out With Live Entertainment:  Every night through January 7th, guests can enjoy authentic cultural entertainment including CHILL’s version of the Forbidden City with performances by the Chinese Acrobat troupe, a traditional Lion Dance, authentic tunes from the Alpine Band, performances by the “Chillettes’, a Northern Lights Show with aerialist performers, and a DJ spinning top hits at the Russian Disco in  CHILL ’s Blizzard Boulevard. Families will also enjoy meeting Kristkindle, Father Frost and The Princess, Santa and Mrs. Claus, and can experience the nightly tree lighting ceremony, choreographed light shows, and more.

Travel to Russia from Russian tour-operator

We can offer you our assistance in reservation and buying the tickets for opera and ballet performances in the best Russian theaters. In the high tourist season it is very difficult to buy the theater tickets on spot. Usually 3-7 days before the theatrical event (or sometimes even 2-3 weeks in advance) there are no available tickets on sale. That is why we suggest you to order your theater ticket in advance and offer you our help with reservation process. Moreover we can choose the best seat option for you – for reasonable price and with a good view on the stage. Besides this we could also advise you which theater to choose – according your hotel location and the performance you’d like to visit.

The ballet was introduced in Russia by Peter the Great as an aristocratic dance in the beginning of the XVIII century. In 1734 the first Russian ballet school was opened. The Imperial School of Ballet in St. Petersburg was opened in the 1740-s as the first professional dance company. By nowadays all large cites in Russia have their own ballet theaters, opera houses and symphony orchestras. We suggest you to visit some Russian ancient and imperial Theaters & Ballets houses in St. Petersburg and Moscow such as Mariinsky, Mikhailovsky, Hermitage Theater, Aleksandrinsky and Bolshoy Theater.
