There are many choices on the Palouse for your dental needs, but there isn’t many dentists that will care for you like Dr. Hansen and his staff. Dr. Hansen goes above and beyond with his sincere and excellent care. To be honest, I don’t love the dentist- but Dr. Hansen and his staff make it the best it can be. Another thing- many area dentists look for a reason to do thousands of dollars of work in your mouth- upon intake Dr. Hansen takes the time to get to know you and what level of dental care you are comfortable with- if you want every single thing fixed…you got it. If you’re like me and don’t want to fix it until it needs fixing…you got it! Thank you Dr. Hansen and staff!

Truly the best experience I have had at a dentist! Dr Hansen spent so much time with me talking and educating me on what was going on. 10/10 recommend!

I hate dentists I always sit in my car thinking about if I even want to go because of the anxiety I get from dental work. My first time going into Dr clay Hansen’s office I was shaking when opening the front door but once I got in and talked to the staff I felt like I was at my grandpa’s old practice and my anxiety diminished little by little. By the time my appointment was done it made my view on the dentist change. Now I can go in there with little to no anxiety knowing that I’m taken care of. Thank you.

Best experience at a dentistry office I’ve ever had. Cleaning was fast and efficient and the staff were courteous, friendly, and informative. Highly recommend.

I love going here, they really take care of you and make sure you are comfortable. I absolutely love going to the dentist now! My son (age 9 now) has been going here since he was 5, he’s never been afraid or worried about having them look and clean his teeth. With their new renovations every room has their own water line and suction; and the new chairs are so comfortable I almost fell asleep last time while they were cleaning. The staff is so nice and welcoming, I have always felt taken care of here.

Thank you for fitting me in for a tooth repair. I am one of your patients who probably has a big TLC on her file, and your gentleness and kindness is much appreciated – not just with Dr. Hansen, but with his entire staff.

I appreciate that the secretary got me in at 2:20pm. I arrived on time, but I forgot to bring my night guard with me! So the dental assistant let me go back home and retrieve it since I live close by. She was still nice when I came back quickly. She used the grinding tool 4 times at my request to smooth out the surface of the night guard, and she answered my questions also. I really appreciate the care I received. Thank you!

Dr. Hansen went far above and beyond my expectations. He agreed to see me on an emergency basis when his office was closed for vacation to do an extraction for an incredibly painful toothache. The work done was first rate. When the pain returned after the deadening wore off, he had me come to the office int he evening to give me another dose. He followed up with me by text and phone to make sure I was okay the next day. He was kind and considerate throughout.

Once again, Dr Hansen accommodated a dental emergency for me and saved the day. Im not good at reviews, but I had to do something this time. Ive been seeing Clay Hansen for several years now and Ive come to feel very grateful for the way that he and his staff run their practice. Thanks to all of you at Palouse View Dental in Moscow Id.

The front staff is courteous and helpful. My dental hygienist was thorough, gentle, and friendly. I would highly recommend Palouse view dental for all your dental needs

Based on research I did online, I selected Dr Hansen to see for a dental checkup. It was the right decision. From my first encounter with Marnie at the front desk to my dental exam by Dr Hansen, the staff was kind, knowledgeable and professional. Keisha (sp?) did a great job cleaning my teeth, explaining everything as she went. Dr Hansen was a personable, thoughtful gentleman who listened to my concerns and came up with a plan to address those. I highly recommend Dr Hansen for dental needs!

The nurse I had was really cool, or Dentist assistant and I was taken care of pretty well. Hard to get to since I’m not from Moscow but I appreciate the membership club 🙂

Common Foot Problems in Older Adults: Causes and Treatment

As people age, preserving foot health becomes increasingly important in maintaining mobility and overall health.

Common Foot Problems in Older Adults

Leonardo Da Vinci famously said, “The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art.” He was amazed that such a seemingly small part of the human body could carry it for an entire lifetime.

This rings particularly true for our aging population. Factors – such as better health care, innovative strides in medicine and healthier lifestyle habits – have led to an increased life expectancy, especially when people incorporate walking and exercise into their daily routine. The result: a whole lot more wear and tear on these “masterpieces of engineering.”

Estimates show that by the time a person reaches age 65, approximately 90% of the population will have suffered a foot and ankle condition at some point. The foot is a complicated body part – home to 26 bones, 33 joints and a complex matrix of ligaments, tendons and muscles.

Due to the physiological complications that come with aging - such as decreased muscle mass, poor circulation and longer healing times - foot problems and injuries in older people can have complications on their overall health and mobility. Your feet really are your base of support.

7 Most Common Foot Problems

The most common feet and ankle problems include:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Fat pad atrophy

1. Plantar fasciitis

One of the most common conditions across all generations is plantar fasciitis , also known as “heel spur syndrome.” Affecting nearly 2 million Americans each year, plantar fasciitis is caused by an inflammation and degeneration of the plantar fascia, the tendon band located on the bottom of the foot. The plantar fascia is responsible for maintaining the structure and stability of the arch.

Long periods of standing, flat feet, high arches and obesity are risk factors for plantar fasciitis.

Patients with plantar fasciitis will often present with sharp or stabbing pain in the heel area with the first step in the morning. The pain typically lasts for a brief period, then decreases in pain and intensity.

2. Achilles tendonitis

Achilles tendonitis is another common foot issue. This condition occurs in the back of the foot in the area where the tendon inserts into the heel bone and the area 1 to 3 inches above where the blood supply is at its lowest. That naturally slower blood flow renders the Achilles tendon less elastic and weaker in structure. Therefore, older patients are more prone to rupturing this area. The pain may also ascend into the leg and the calf muscles.

Regular stretching of the calf muscles and Achilles tendons can help prevent pain.

3. Neuromas

Neuromas, also called interdigital neuromas or a Morton’s neuroma, are nerve enlargements that are often found right below your toes in the front of the foot.

Patients with neuromas usually feel symptoms, including:

  • A burning or tingly sensation under their toes
  • Pain radiating into the tips of the toes
  • The sensation that a sock is rolled up in the front of the shoe

Neuromas are often brought on by long periods of wearing poorly fitting shoes that are too narrow and constricting. Another cause of neuromas is obesity. The uneven weight distribution of carrying excess weight can cause more pressure to be applied to the nerves in the foot, resulting in the enlargement and the formation of a bursa sac around the nerve.

4. Bunions

Bunions – also known as hallux valgus – are very common in all active age groups. They are painful, bony bumps that develop on the outside of the big toe joint. They tend to develop slowly over time, as pressure on the big toe joint pushes the toe inward, toward the second toe.

Bunions are caused by abnormal biomechanics forces in the big toe, ill-fitting and tight shoes and arthritis in the joint . Bunions are especially common in women due to wearing ill-fitting footwear such as high heels or pointy-toed shoes. The bunion becomes enlarged and sometimes painful when the tissue covering the big toe joint becomes stressed, irritated and inflamed.

The area directly below the big toe, called the sesamoid apparatus, endures a large amount of stress and force. It acts as a pulley system composed of bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments that propels the foot forward for walking and running. This area can be the site for a fair amount of pain and discomfort, making walking and exercise extremely difficult and painful.

5. Fat pad atrophy

The fat pad is one of few places in the body where fat is a welcome addition. The foot relies on the fat pad in both the front of the foot and in the heel area to better absorb the tremendous forces the foot is subjected to during the day. Over time, the fat pad degenerates and can lead to inflammation of the heel bone, the plantar fascia and bones in the front of the foot, known as metatarsals.

6. Hammertoes

Hammertoes are very common foot deformities that can be painful, especially if a hard area of skin, known as a corn, develops over the hammertoe. Every step can be painful, especially when there is contact with the top of the shoe. The term "hammertoe" refers to a toe that points upward, rather than lying flat.

This constant friction and irritation can cause the development and inflammation of a bursa, which is a fluid-filled sac that protects a bony prominence. Hammertoes are sometimes the result of neurological disorders such as neuropathy and stroke. Hammertoes may also affect balance and posture .

The big toe is a favorite spot for the development of gout , a metabolic inflammation of the joint that causes extreme pain. Diets rich in certain proteins and substances known as purines, dehydration, overindulgence in alcohol and coffee, red meat, shellfish, legumes and certain systemic diseases can precipitate a very painful gout attack.

How to Avoid Common Foot Problems

Obesity can increase your risk of suffering from foot pain. As people's body mass index, or BMI, increases from the normal range to obesity, so do the odds that they will have foot pain as they get older; this is true for men and women.

Compromised blood flow to the feet can cause or worsen foot pain. Various factors can affect the quality of blood flow to the feet, including whether you smoke or have diabetes , peripheral neuropathy or blood clots .

Shoe fit is always an important consideration. One study showed that almost 90% of the population is wearing the wrong shoe size. A person’s shoe size at age 20 isn’t necessarily going to be the same at age 50.

As our bodies shrink with age, our feet often seem to get bigger. Feet do not literally grow, orthopedists agree. Rather, over the years, tissue in our feet degenerates and ligaments become looser, which causes strain on joints and can lead to arthritis. The degeneration of ligaments can cause feet to flatten and become wider. In addition, pregnancy has also been shown to cause increases in shoe size.

It is always best to have your new shoe fit in the afternoon when the swelling is greatest, not in the morning. If shoes are not comfortable when you try them on, don’t buy them in the hopes you will break them in. Poor shoe fit causes many overuse injuries in the muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones. The best shoe should have a slightly wider toe box to allow for afternoon swelling and a small to medium heel height that will protect against knee problems as well as plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis.

Orthotic devices

Orthotic devices are very useful to support areas of the foot that have structural (high arches/low arches) and functional deficits. Patients commonly use either over-the-counter or prescription orthotics. OTC inserts are best suited for comfort and cushion in a shoe. They provide little to no orthopedic support, are accommodative in nature and do not change the mechanics of the foot.

Prescription orthotics, prescribed by a doctor, are designed to improve the shock absorbing capability and make the motion relationship between the front, middle and back of the foot more ideal. They have been shown to improve function and decrease pain in the knee, hip and lower back.

Compression socks

Compression socks are useful to wear in the presence of venous congestion and varicose veins . Prior to wearing these devices check with your doctor to make sure they’re right for you.

Foot surgery should always be the last resort. Most foot and ankle problems can be managed successfully without surgery. Don't self-diagnose. If an issue persists for more than one week, you should seek medical attention by a health care professional.

Importance of Healthy Feet for Health

Walking has many benefits that lead to a healthier lifestyle. It can promote better circulation, leading to lower incidence of cardiovascular disease, arterial sclerosis and high blood pressure.

In addition, walking also promotes better regulation of glucose, the primary type of sugar found in your blood and your body’s primary source of energy. Proper glucose control is important especially for people with Type 2 diabetes , a disease that has increased over the last two decades. Walking has been prescribed by endocrinologists in diabetic cases, where they’ve seen helpful results, especially with the geriatric population.

Bottom Line

Ultimately, the importance of healthy foot and ankle function can never be underestimated.

It has been shown in numerous studies how a painful and compromised foot can lead to musculoskeletal problems elsewhere in the body, including the knee, hip, spine and even the TMJ joint in the jaw .

More and more clinicians are appreciating and recognizing the role of the foot in preventing these issues. And if there’s one thing we can agree on, it’s that foot and ankle problems may not be life-threatening, but they certainly are lifestyle-threatening and affect our overall health, especially when it comes to older adults.

If you experience any of these common feet problems or experience other issues with your feet, talk to your primary care physician or podiatrist.

7 best dog dental chews and treats, according to veterinarians

Veterinarians suggest feeding your dog dental treats two to three times per week in addition to brushing their teeth using a dog-safe toothpaste and toothbrush.

Like humans, dogs can suffer from dental problems, including periodontal gum disease and tooth decay. Your dog’s diet can play a major role in maintaining your dog’s teeth and gum health: Several dog foods and kibbles are formulated to reduce plaque and tartar on their teeth, and dental chews — a type of dog treat — usually have a gentle abrasive effect to physically scrub away buildup.

I spoke to veterinarians about the benefits of dental chews, how often your dog should have them and what to consider when purchasing them. With their guidance, I listed the best dog dental chews below along with our favorite pick,  Greenies Regular Dog Treats .

SKIP AHEAD How I picked the best dental chews for dogs | The best dental chews for dogs | Are dental chews worth it?

Greenies Regular Dog Dental Treats

How I picked the best dental chews for dogs

Dental chews can be great at keeping your dog’s teeth healthy and clean when used in conjunction with regular teeth cleaning. When shopping for dental chews, our experts recommend considering the following factors:

  • VOHC Registered Seal: They appear on the council’s list of accepted products with the certified mark.
  • Size: Make sure the dental chews and treats are sized appropriately for your dog since they can be a choking hazard.
  • Nutritional information on the packaging: This allows you to keep track of your dog’s daily calorie intake and adjust their daily food portions accordingly to avoid exceeding the recommended amount.
  • Your dog’s age: Dental treats are recommended for dogs aged six months and older. Pups less than six months old should not receive dental treats since their adult teeth haven’t come in yet, according to our experts.

Best dental chews for dogs

Below, I highlighted VOHC-approved dental chews for dogs that align with our experts’ guidance. All of the dental treats we listed below are suitable for dogs six months and older.

What are dental treats and chews for dogs.

The best way to maintain your dog’s dental hygiene and keep their gums and teeth free of plaque is by scheduling regular teeth cleanings at the vet and brushing their teeth daily with a dog-safe toothpaste and toothbrush combo. Dental chews can also help: They work to mechanically scrape off odor-causing bacteria and leftover food from their teeth, according to our experts. Some dental chews include a chemical anti-plaque agent like delmopinol that creates a protective barrier on the teeth.

Dental treats can help remove some plaque buildup on their teeth and can be a valuable addition to your at-home oral health care for your dog, says Dr. Joe Wakshlag , professor of clinical nutrition and sports medicine and rehabilitation at Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine. However, these treats shouldn’t replace the aforementioned teeth-cleaning methods, nor should you give them to pups less than six months old since their adult teeth haven’t come in yet, he says.

The veterinarians I spoke to suggest looking for a registered certification mark from the Veterinary Oral Health Council — an entity of the American Veterinary Dental College — which indicates that the dental treat has met pre-set standards that prove it can reduce calculus (tartar) and plaque development on your dog’s teeth by 15-20%. The VOHC — a group of veterinary dentists and dental scientists — review data from manufacturers’ research trials and give the VOHC Seal to products that they determine can help reduce the severity of periodontal disease in dogs and cats with regular use, the American Veterinary Dental College says.

Are dental chews worth it?

Dental chews can help reduce plaque and tartar accumulation as long as they’re used alongside other teeth-cleaning methods. You should also consider what type of chewer your dog is to see if they’d actually benefit from regular dental treats or if that’ll just be empty added calories, says Wakshlag.

If you do notice these treats aren’t being fully chewed, it’s likely better to schedule annual professional dental cleanings, especially for smaller dogs who are more prone to dental problems, says Wakshlag.

Make sure to track the dental treat calories and adjust food portions accordingly — treats shouldn’t exceed more than 10% of your dog’s daily calorie intake, experts told us in our guide to dog treats . If your dog is getting several treats throughout the day, it’s probably best to give them two to three dental chews a week rather than giving them out daily, says Wakshlag. And just like their regular treats, “always consider the size of your dog and avoid chews or sticks that are too small for the breed to avoid choking hazards,” says Caylee Freels, a licensed veterinary technician at VCA White Lake Animal Hospital .

When Should My Child Have Their First Dental Visit?

dentist i visit

You might wonder when the right time is for your child’s first dental visit. According to the study, the ideal time is by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth eruption. This early visit lays the groundwork for lifelong oral health, but it’s more than just a check-up. What benefits can you expect from starting dental care so early, and how should you prepare your child for this important milestone? Let’s explore these questions and more to ensure your child’s smile stays healthy. For professional guidance tailored to young smiles, consider  Brisbane Paediatric Dentist , where specialised care meets gentle expertise.

Key Takeaways:

  • Early visits help prevent dental problems by detecting issues like cavities at an early stage.
  • Initial visits familiarize children with the dentist’s office, reducing future anxiety.
  • Dentists provide guidance on proper oral hygiene, teething, and diet during early visits.
  • Early dental care establishes a foundation for lifelong healthy dental habits.

Importance of Early Dental Visits

Taking your child to the dentist early on can set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy dental habits. By introducing them to dental care at a young age, you’re not only helping them get accustomed to the dentist’s office but also preventing potential dental issues before they become serious. Early visits allow the dentist to identify any early signs of tooth decay, gum disease, or misalignment, which can be easier and less costly to address sooner rather than later.

These early appointments also provide an opportunity for you to learn about proper oral hygiene for your child. Dentists can offer advice on brushing techniques, the right type of toothbrush, and even diet recommendations that support dental health. This guidance is crucial in establishing a daily routine that keeps your child’s teeth and gums healthy.

Moreover, frequent visits can help alleviate any fear or anxiety a child might’ve about going to the dentist. When dental visits become a regular part of their routine, they’re more likely to feel comfortable and less anxious. This positive experience can translate into a more cooperative and confident attitude towards dental care as they grow older.

Recommended Age for First Visit

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling your child’s first dental visit by their first birthday or when their first tooth erupts. It might seem early, but those tiny teeth need care right from the start. Early visits help your child get comfortable with the dentist and establish a foundation for good oral health habits.

You might wonder why such an early visit is necessary. Babies can develop dental issues like cavities even before their first birthday. Early visits allow the dentist to check for any potential problems and provide guidance on how to care for your child’s teeth and gums. This proactive approach helps prevent more serious issues down the road.

During this initial visit, the dentist will examine your child’s mouth, teeth, and gums to ensure everything is developing correctly. They’ll also talk to you about teething, proper brushing techniques, and the importance of a healthy diet for dental health.

Benefits of Early Dental Care

Taking your child to the dentist early offers several important benefits.

You’ll help prevent dental issues before they become serious, catch any problems early, and set the foundation for lifelong healthy habits.

These steps can make a huge difference in your child’s oral health.

Preventative Health Measures

Early dental check-ups can prevent cavities and establish a foundation for lifelong oral health. When you take your child to the dentist early, you’re not just addressing immediate concerns; you’re setting the stage for a healthy future. These visits teach your child the importance of oral hygiene from a young age, making them more likely to maintain good habits as they grow older.

By starting these visits early, you help your child become comfortable with the dental environment, reducing anxiety and making future visits easier. Dentists will also guide you on proper brushing techniques and nutritional advice that supports dental health, like limiting sugary snacks and drinks.

Furthermore, early dental care includes treatments such as fluoride applications and dental sealants, which protect your child’s teeth from decay. These preventative measures are crucial because they’re more effective and less costly than treating problems once they’ve developed.

Regular check-ups allow the dentist to monitor the development of your child’s teeth and gums, ensuring everything is progressing as it should.

Early Problem Detection

In addition to promoting lifelong oral health, early dental visits help identify potential issues before they become serious problems. By taking your child to the dentist early, you allow the dentist to monitor the development of their teeth and gums. This can lead to the early detection of issues such as tooth decay, gum disease, or misalignment, which can be easier to treat in their initial stages.

When a dentist examines your child’s mouth, they can spot early signs of cavities or other dental problems that you mightn’t notice at home. Early intervention can save your child from discomfort and prevent more extensive and costly treatments down the road.

Moreover, identifying problems like misaligned teeth early on can make corrective measures, such as braces, more effective and less invasive.

Early dental visits also allow the dentist to provide you with personalized advice on diet, oral hygiene, and other factors that can influence your child’s dental health. This proactive approach ensures that any issues are addressed promptly, setting the stage for a healthier future.

Establishing Healthy Habits

Introducing your child to dental care early can foster lifelong healthy habits. Taking them to the dentist by their first birthday helps them get comfortable with the routine. When they see you making dental visits a priority, they’re more likely to understand its importance.

Early dental visits also teach your child the correct techniques for brushing and flossing. Dentists can show them how to clean their teeth properly, making these practices a natural part of their daily routine. You’ll also learn how to help your child with these tasks, ensuring they’re done correctly until they can handle it on their own.

Another key benefit is that regular dental check-ups can prevent tooth decay and other issues. When your child’s teeth are healthy, they’re less likely to face dental problems that can affect their overall well-being.

Healthy teeth contribute to better chewing and speaking abilities, impacting their nutrition and communication skills positively.

What to Expect During the Visit

During your child’s first dental visit, the dentist will likely start with a gentle examination of their teeth, gums, and mouth. This helps the dentist assess their oral health and identify any potential issues early on. They’ll also check for any signs of decay or developmental concerns.

Next, the dentist might clean your child’s teeth, removing any plaque or tartar buildup. This process is usually quick and painless, aimed at keeping their smile healthy.

The dentist will also demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques, ensuring you and your child know how to maintain good oral hygiene at home.

A significant part of the visit involves educating you about your child’s dental needs. The dentist will offer advice on topics like teething, fluoride use, and proper nutrition to support healthy teeth.

They’ll answer any questions you have and address any concerns.

Preparing Your Child

Preparing your child for their first dental visit can help alleviate any anxiety and make the experience more positive. Start by talking to them about what to expect. Use simple, reassuring language, and avoid words that might scare them, like ‘pain’ or ‘needle.’ Instead, say the dentist will ‘count their teeth’ or ‘clean their smile.’

You can also read books or watch videos about visiting the dentist. Many children’s books are designed to introduce kids to dental visits in a friendly, relatable way. These resources can make the process seem less mysterious and more familiar.

Role-playing is another effective technique. Pretend to be the dentist and let your child be the patient. Use a toothbrush to ‘examine’ their teeth, and then switch roles so they can practice being the dentist. This playful activity can make the real visit feel like a familiar game.

Lastly, schedule the appointment at a time when your child is usually well-rested and in a good mood. A tired or hungry child is more likely to be irritable. By preparing in these ways, you’ll help your child feel more comfortable and confident about their first dental visit.

Choosing the Right Dentist

Finding the right dentist for your child’s first visit is crucial to ensuring a positive and stress-free experience. Start by looking for a pediatric dentist, as they specialize in caring for children’s teeth and have a child-friendly office environment. Check online reviews and ask for recommendations from friends, family, or your pediatrician.

When you’ve shortlisted a few dentists, call their offices to ask about their approach to first-time visits. A good pediatric dentist will be patient, gentle, and able to explain procedures in a way that makes your child feel comfortable. Consider visiting the office beforehand to see if it’s welcoming and kid-friendly. Bright colors, toys, and friendly staff can make a big difference.

Also, inquire about their policies on parental presence during the appointment. Some dentists encourage parents to stay with their children, while others might prefer to build a rapport directly with the child. Choose what aligns best with your comfort level and your child’s needs.

Establishing Good Oral Hygiene

Establishing good oral hygiene early on helps ensure your child’s teeth stay healthy and strong. Begin by brushing your baby’s gums with a soft, damp cloth even before their first tooth appears. Once teeth emerge, switch to a small, soft-bristled toothbrush and use a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste. Brush twice a day, making it a fun routine by singing songs or using a timer.

Don’t forget to clean between your child’s teeth once they’ve two teeth that touch. Flossing helps remove food particles and plaque that a toothbrush can’t reach. Around age three, when your child can spit, you can increase the toothpaste amount to a pea-sized blob.

Lead by example; let your child watch you brush and floss your teeth. Encourage them to mimic your actions, turning it into a shared family activity. Regularly check for any signs of decay or unusual spots on their teeth and gums.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Can I Ease My Child’s Dental Anxiety Before the Visit?

To ease your child’s dental anxiety, explain the process in a fun, simple way. Practice a pretend visit at home. Bring a favorite toy for comfort and choose a dentist experienced with kids. Stay positive and calm.

Are There Any Specific Foods to Avoid Before the Appointment?

You should avoid giving your child sugary snacks and drinks before the appointment. These can stick to their teeth and make it harder for the dentist to get a clear look at their oral health.

What Should I Bring to My Child’s First Dental Visit?

You should bring your child’s medical records, a list of any medications they’re taking, their favorite toy for comfort, and your insurance information. It’s also helpful to prepare a list of questions for the dentist.

How Often Should My Child Visit the Dentist After the First Appointment?

After the first appointment, you should take your child to the dentist every six months. Regular visits help catch potential issues early and ensure good dental hygiene. Don’t forget to schedule appointments and maintain consistent oral care routines.

Are There Any Signs of Dental Issues I Should Watch for at Home?

You should watch for signs like discolored teeth, sensitivity to hot or cold, swollen or bleeding gums, and persistent bad breath. If you notice any of these, it’s time to schedule a dental appointment for your child.

Dds class of 2028 arrives at school of dentistry 8 min read.

Ann Arbor, Mich., June 22, 2024 – Members of the School of Dentistry’s Class of 2028 arrived this week from around the country to start their 4-year journey to a DDS degree.

The 109 members of the class were admitted from a pool of 1,716 applicants.

The class statistical snapshot:

• The 62 women and 47 men continue a trend in recent years that has seen a surge in interest in dentistry from women.

• 65 are Michigan residents, 44 from out-of-state.

• Four class members have master’s degrees.

• Average age: 22.

Class members graduated from 11 Michigan colleges and universities: 27 from the University of Michigan (24 from the main campus in Ann Arbor and 3 from U-M Dearborn); 15 from Michigan State University; 4 from both Wayne State and Oakland universities; 3 from Grand Valley State; 2 from both Detroit Mercy and Saginaw Valley State; and 1 each from Aquinas College, Calvin University and Hope College.

Beyond Michigan, members of the new class earned their undergraduate degrees at 37 higher education institutions across the land. They range from small colleges such as Muhlenberg, Rollins and Saint Norbert to major universities from coast to coast – from Washington in the Pacific Northwest to Maryland and North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the East, with Utah, Texas, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Mississippi, Georgia and Florida State in-between, among others.

Dental school administrators, faculty and staff welcomed the first-year dental students, known as D1s, to campus with a series of orientation sessions this week. Dean Jacques Nör and Dr. Reneé Duff, Associate Dean for Students, discussed the school’s educational mission, resources, and history, as well as the rewards of the profession of dentistry. Duff encouraged students to consider themselves as members of a large team who can rely on each other and an extensive network of resources designed to help students not just survive or navigate the challenges of the professional program, but to thrive over the course of their time at the dental school.

Nör said the school’s curriculum and faculty intend for each graduate to leave the school as “a highly skilled competent clinician with a deep understanding of the scientific foundation of dentistry and the compassion to serve those in need.”

“The journey is what makes this special,” Nör said. “It is such a wonderful opportunity that each one of you has now to undergo a life-changing training. You are going to be different when you leave here. You are going to have a profession that gives you an opportunity to do really meaningful and very significant things for your patients.”

When Nör returns to the place where he first began private practice more than three decades ago he often encounters his former patients who will remind him that he completed a certain procedure or a filling for them that is still in place today. “You can make things better for people, things that are extremely meaningful for people, things they are not going to forget for their whole lives,” he said. “It’s a wonderful profession and we are welcoming each one of you to this new profession and this new journey.”

Orientation sessions this week included an overview of the first-semester curriculum; check-in of each student’s dental instruments and equipment in the Simulation Lab; advice from upper-level dental students; a review of student services, policies and procedures; an introduction to the school’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives; and wellness and counseling resources. The D1s also were introduced to a new program called “1st Year Connect,” an online directory of about 120 students, faculty and alumni of the school who have volunteered to be mentors for the first-year students; the directory descriptions allow D1s to find mentors with similar interests in a variety of dentistry and educational specialties.

Breaks and waiting between events during Orientation gave members of the new class time to begin learning about each other’s unique journeys of choosing to pursue dentistry and how they have ended up as classmates at the U-M dental school in Ann Arbor. As he waited with classmates for his turn to be photographed for the school directory, Anshul Saraf described growing up in Lincoln, Nebraska, as the only kid among his friends who didn’t object to going to the dentist, which he says was maybe a sign of things to come.

During his undergraduate years at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Saraf honed an interest at the intersection of medicine and business. He majored in bio-chemistry with minors in business and chemistry. He eventually decided that dentistry, rather than medicine, would allow him to more quickly combine his interests in a health field and business. He applied to 17 dental schools and was accepted at four.

“I picked this program specifically because of its exposure for clinical experience and different specialties – that and their emphasis on business,” he said. “In your third year you can do an MBA while in the dental program, which is something I’m interested in.” He likes that he will gain lots of clinical experience to help him narrow his interests, and he acknowledges he may change his mind on the MBA by the time he reaches his third year. “But I want to keep as many doors open as possible,” he says.

The first day of dental school was a little daunting, Saraf said, but it was also the rewarding culmination of a lot of work and planning over the last few years. “I’m excited to hit the ground running, learn from my mistakes, learn from my environment and my experience with my peers,” he said. “The last four years have been building up to this moment where you say you are pre-dental, and you say you have applied, and you say you have gotten in. But it doesn’t start until you are here. It is exciting to get it going.”
