Culture & History of the Catalina Island Cruise Port

Indigenous groups, like the native Pimugnans, have lived on Catalina Island for thousands of years. Later, Europeans claimed the island as a territory of Spain, and the island subsequently passed hands to private sellers, including the Banning Brothers, who began the island’s transformation into a glamorous resort destination. In the early 20th century, William Wrigley Jr. of Wrigley chewing gum fame bought out the island, and his estate has controlled it ever since. Today, Catalina Island strikes a delicate balance between maintaining the natural ecosystem and expanding the glamorous resort lifestyle that makes the island so popular with visitors.

The Catalina Island cruise port is called the Green Pleasure Pier, which is where you’ll find the local visitor center, watersports, and other nearby activities. The Catalina Island Museum isn’t too far from the cruise pier, either.

Many shops are within walking distance of the cruise port. For those who are interested in bringing back a piece of the island’s history, head to the Catalina Island Gift Shop. SunKissed is a local boutique specializing in beachwear and colorful jewelry.

California uses the U.S. dollar as the official currency of the state. ATMs are commonly available on Catalina Island, and credit cards are accepted at most restaurants and shops. Tipping on Catalina Island is the same as most destinations in the U.S. Tip at least 10% to 15% for your taxi driver, and 15% to 20% at bars and restaurants for good service.

A Weekend Getaway Guide: Carnival Cruise to Catalina Island & Ensenada

By The LA Girl

Carnival Imagination docked at port

If you’re looking for a fun, creative way to get away, a cruise may be just the ticket!  Carnival  offers an incredibly affordable and amazing 4-day cruise that stops in Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico . It leaves from Long Beach Cruise Terminal so you won’t have to deal with the airport.

It’s a great option for an extended weekend getaway since lodging, meals and entertainment are all included in the cost. You won’t have to worry about driving anywhere and you can have fun all night long and be just a few flights of stairs away from your room.

There’s no point in worrying about getting bored on the cruise because there’s literally a million things to do. Since I don’t want this blog post to go on forever, I’ll only highlight my top 13 things to do on a Carnival Cruise to Catalina Island and Ensenada.

Eat to your heart’s content  –  On Carnival Imagination , there’s no shortage of food since there are dining options 24/7. There’s fine dining for dinner where you can enjoy a beautiful 3-course meal or a casual buffet, depending on your mood.

Beautifully decorated shrimp entree

Watch some great shows  – Looking for something to do after an amazing dinner? There’s too many options to choose from! Enjoy one of the live musical shows, watch some comedy, sing (or just watch) at the karaoke bar – there are endless entertainment options.

Relax and treat yourself at the spa  – The onboard spa is pretty amazing! I opted for the Spatopia treatment which included a full body massage and a full facial. It was so relaxing and my massage therapist also recommended a detox ritual that I’m currently doing.

Lounge by the pool  – If you want to just chill, then enjoy lounging by the ship’s main pool. You can take a dip or hang out in the hot tubs. If there’s too many kids around, you can head over to the 21 and over area for a more serene environment.

Carnival Imagination pool deck

Shop ’til you drop  – Looking for some retail therapy? The shops onboard feature souvenirs, fine jewelry, cosmetics, liquors, accessories and more! They have lots of sales and promos going on all the time, so make sure you drop by a few times.

Win big at the casino  – You don’t have to go to Vegas to gamble! There’s a casino onboard and you’ll get to play your favorite table games and maybe even win a jackpot on the slots.

Explore Catalina Island  – On this cruise, you’ll get to stop at the quaint town of Avalon. It’s a beautiful island town with lots of history and plenty of activities to do while the cruise is docked for the day. Make sure you book an excursion and make the most of your time at Catalina Island.  Note: Excursions are not included in the cruise price and are an extra charge.

Many boats in the water with Catalina Island town behind

Go on a food tour  – We are so happy to have booked the  Taste of Catalina Food Tour ! Our amazing tour guide was a local and knew so much about the island. We went to 7 different restaurants and had incredible tastes at each spot. I highly recommend it!

Travel to another country  – The second stop on this cruise is to Ensenada, Mexico. If you’ve never been, this will be your chance to experience a little bit of local Mexican culture. There are many types of excursions available to book during your time here including horseback riding, ATV adventures, winery tours and more.

Eat local Mexican cuisine  – During our time in Ensenada, my mom and I had an incredible lunch featuring fresh oysters, steamed clams, abalone pasta and a panna cotta to finish. I’m still thinking about that meal even now.

Dine at the Chef’s Table  – For fellow foodies, I highly recommend experiencing the Chef’s Table dinner. This dinner is limited to only 15 guests and you will be personally escorted by the chef to the galley where you’ll see where over 20,000 meals are prepared each day.

You’ll enjoy some tastings and also meet the Head Pastry Chef who will show you how to make their delicious chocolate cake. The main dinner features a 7-course meal that is beautifully presented. During our dinner, we also had the pleasure of a magic show in-between courses – a true delight!

This Breathtakingly Beautiful Destination In California Is Known As America's Amalfi Coast

Avalon on Catalina Island

If Netflix's stylish thriller "Ripley" has you longing to follow in the footsteps of its glamorous cast for a seaside Italian idyll — the series follows a con man infiltrating expat high society filmed on the Amalfi Coast – you don't need a passport. Just head for Avalon on Santa Catalina Island, off the coast of good old Orange County, California. Here, narrow Italianate streets wind up and down the steep hillsides, and the balmy Mediterranean climate makes for pleasant visits year-round, whether you come for a weekend, a day trip, or as part of a road trip across California .

You can get a quick ferry to Catalina from Long Beach, San Pedro, or our pick –  the lesser-known beach town of Dana Point . Once in town, you can rent a golf cart to zip around Avalon's windy streets, but where else in SoCal can you traipse up and down charming European-style streets on foot? Those steep hills mean that almost every place in town shares that breathtaking coastal view.

And like Amalfi, it's a playground for celebrities. Over 225 feature films have been filmed at Catalina, from the era of The Talkies on, and its proximity to Hollywood has made it a favorite getaway for stars. Katy Perry, who also vacations in Amalfi, once sang karaoke at Avalon's funky beachfront bar, El Galleon. Nicholas Cageis also fond of both and Amalfi and Avalon Harbor, where he arrives by private yacht.

Avalon, to stay or just for the day

The most opulent and Amalfi-like accommodation on the island has to be the ultra-luxe Mt Ada, a six-room hillside retreat in the former home of chewing gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr., an early island investor who developed the harbor's landmark rotunda-style, art deco casino (this casino is a social club that has never hosted gambling). The views from the terrace are worth the price of an overnight stay alone, and a complimentary golf cart will get you up and down that hill.

The coolest new boutique accommodation on the island is the beachfront Bellanca Hotel, right in the middle of town. From the same team that created the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs, this is a modernist visual treat that reminds you that you're in design-crazy Southern California after all. Here, you get a hipster-friendly complimentary beach-cruiser bicycle to tour around town instead of a golf cart. Even if you're just over for a day trip, stop in for brunch at the hotel's restaurant, The Naughty Fox, where the ahi poke nachos are truly buzzworthy.

If you are feeling adventurous, Catalina is one of the most stunning snorkeling spots in the US . Or hop in a Humvee for a tour to see the island's Bison herd, originally brought here as extras on a movie set.

Drinking and dining in Avalon, from Italy to Tahiti

The best eats in Avalon tend to be from the casual side of the menu. The beachy Lobster Trap is the place to shuffle into in flop-flops and shorts to order a platter of rich, garlicky Oysters Rockefeller, spiny lobster in season, and another California coastal classic: steamed artichokes.

But the must-eat cult-classic meal in Avalon just happens to be Italian, and it's one you'd never think of ordering without a recommendation, most likely followed by the recommender saying, "Just trust me." It's Mama Mia's Day Old Spaghetti at Original Antonio's Pizzeria & Deli. A gooey casserole baked with extra sauce and cheese and served with big tranches of crusty garlic bread, it's an Italian-American original you and your boo can slurp up Lady-and-the-Tramp-style while ogling the yachts bobbing on their moorings from the restaurant's sunny, harbor-front patio.

Catalina Island has stood in for the South Pacific in plenty of swashbuckling pirate films over the years, so set Amalfi aside just long enough to pay tribute to the Tiki gods by downing a rum-based Wiki Wacker at legendary Luau Larry's. It's a tropical drink that comes not with an umbrella but a straw hat for you to wear while imbibing — just make sure your golf cart has a designated driver.

How the cheapest interior and balcony cabins on Carnival's new cruise ship compare — and why the pricier one is worth it

  • Carnival's new Carnival Firenze  cruise ship set sail in late April.
  • Its interior cabins are $160 cheaper per person than the ones with balconies.
  • The cramped balcony stateroom is worth the additional cost.

Insider Today

I finally realized that my parents are, in fact, always right. Unfortunately, learning my lesson took a stint in a windowless cabin on a Carnival cruise .

In mid-May, I found myself stuck on a four-night Carnival Firenze cruise with my family. I was there for work — they were there to enjoy the sun. And that they did, as they luxuriated in a cabin with a balcony while I was stuck in a drab, windowless dungeon.

Never again will I think of my parents as 'snobby' for wanting the more expensive accommodation (sorry, Mom and Dad).

cruise from long beach to catalina island

My parents, occasional cruisers, have always preferred staterooms with balconies. After my stint in the ship's interior accommodation, I now understand why balconies are the most popular cabin category.

For Firenze's cheapest itinerary in 2024 — a four-night roundtrip voyage from Long Beach, California, to Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico — a dual-occupancy interior cabin starts at $359 per person.

Ones with balconies command a minimum of $519 per person.

That's a $160 difference — and well worth the extra cash.

Carnival Firenze, the company’s newest vessel, set sail in April.

cruise from long beach to catalina island

But that doesn't mean it's a brand-new ship.

Firenze had initially joined the fleet of another Carnival Corp brand , Costa Cruises, in 2020 with plans to launch in China — that is, until the COVID-19 pandemic.

Carnival Cruise Line then acquired Firenze and its sister ship, Venezia, in 2022 to grow its US footprint amid "strong interest in people wanting to sail with us," a Carnival spokesperson told Business Insider.

But my interior cabin looked more like an ancient motel than a four-year-old ship.

cruise from long beach to catalina island

The spokesperson said Firenze underwent a two-month refresh to "install the Carnival Fun Italian Style Concept."

This Italianized vision came as a photo of Florence, Italy, behind my bed, half covered by pillows. It's for the best — the print looked misplaced, unnecessary, and tacky.

At least it matched the color palette of the equally ugly carpet.

The furniture was functional, but that doesn’t mean it was pretty.

cruise from long beach to catalina island

The gray chaise clashed with the bafflingly ugly yellow and red carpet, while the faux marble and wood side table looked as cheap as my fare.

Thankfully, I have no gripes about the desk and closet. Both were sizable and looked like ones I've seen on more expensive and modern cruise ships.

'Expensive' and 'modern' could be the antithesis of my bathroom. It was a total eyesore.

cruise from long beach to catalina island

The yellow and red tiles would've been better suited in a McDonald's. But no design crime was bigger than the lack of designated storage units.

The only shelving came preoccupied with tissue boxes and toilet paper rolls, an unnecessary amenity given that my cabin attendant cleaned and restocked my room daily. I would've rather had one less spare toilet paper roll if that meant I could keep my skincare products inside the bathroom instead of out on the desk.

On the bright side, the bathroom and bedroom felt surprisingly spacious for 150 square feet.

cruise from long beach to catalina island

Unbeknownst to me, Carnival had put me in one of the ship's accessible, wheelchair-friendly accommodations. As a person without physical disabilities, this meant the shower — a curtain surrounding floor drains — was one of the largest I've had at sea.

Back in the living room, I could've starfished on the floor without hitting any furniture.

Complaints about its appearance aside, the room was large and almost perfectly functional — easily worth its $90-a-night price tag.

cruise from long beach to catalina island

But without any natural light, the dated, dark, and mismatched furniture made my cabin look more like a drab hospital room.

Think I'm being dramatic? One look at my parent's balcony cabin will prove my point.

Some of the furniture in my dungeon and their breezy hotel room at sea looked identical.

cruise from long beach to catalina island

But the light-filled room and less hideous carpet made the chaise and side table feel more at home.

Unfortunately, nothing could've saved the still misplaced-looking photo of Italy.

However, no amount of natural light could've saved the stateroom from feeling cramped.

cruise from long beach to catalina island

The cabin is 72 square feet larger than my interior one. But don't expect to starfish here: The narrow layout and furniture didn't leave much room to spare.

Our four-person family could comfortably lounge in my interior room. Four people inside the balcony cabin required flexible maneuvering around each other and the furniture.

The tiny bathroom made the one in my interior accommodation feel palatial.

Yet, despite being much smaller, the extra shelving — noticeably deprived of excess paper products — made this bathroom more functional.

But the tight layout is worth it for the private outdoor space and light.

The ocean breeze and view provided the perfect backdrop for my parent's peaceful early mornings.

Meanwhile, my early mornings were spent in a dingy, liminal space-like bedroom, never fully sure of the exact time. I felt like a gremlin who lived in perpetual darkness, only reminded that the sun had, in fact, risen when I stopped by my family's bright cabin.

Seeing my mom lounge around with the balcony door cracked open, reading some documents without turning the lights on, was enviable.

A quiet outdoor space is especially important on a ship like Carnival Firenze.

The vessel is loud and rowdy, as is expected of a Carnival cruise. I struggled to find a quiet, relaxing lounge that wasn't overwhelmed by screaming children, screaming adults, or poorly mixed music.

Our cabins were the only truly quiet spaces on the ship. And I'd much rather read a book on a balcony with ocean views than in a dreary, dark interior stateroom.

I should probably add an asterisk next to 'truly quiet spaces.'

The interior and balcony accommodations did share one terrible similarity: ultra-thin walls.

Rowdy passersby could be heard clearly from inside both rooms. The neighbors' TV and late-night conversations constantly woke my dad up. (Maybe my interior cabin wasn't so bad after all.)

But, like I said, I'd trade a gloomy stateroom for a balcony and the chance to eavesdrop on my neighbors.

As usual, my parent's decision to book a balcony instead of an interior cabin was the way to go.

Unless you're on an ultra-strict budget, it'll be worth the additional cost. A little sun and fresh air can go a long way for your sanity, especially on a ship where silence and peace are an upcharged luxury.

News | Developer search is officially launched for Outer Harbor cruise terminal in San Pedro

TORRANCE - 11/07/2012 - (Staff Photo: Scott Varley/LANG) Donna Littlejohn

For the past decade , the area has been viewed as a strategic spot for a second cruise center in San Pedro, offering more space for the larger, more extravagant ships now coming online amid an uptick in the pleasure cruise industry.

“We have seen increased demand for cruises out of the LA Waterfront over the last several years, with a record 1.3 million cruise passengers in 2023,” Port Executive Director Gene Seroka said in a written comment announcing the search for developers. “With more growth forecast, these projects will allow us to greatly expand our cruise business capacity while providing the best possible experience and convenience for cruise travelers.”

Proposals are due by 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12.

Over the last two years, port officials said, more than 200 cruise ships have called in L.A.

And more cruise passengers — and much larger ships, carrying 4,000 passengers or more — are expected over the coming five years, port officials said.

Each cruise that calls at the port, officials said, generates more than $1 million in local economic activity.

The port’s Outer Harbor provides an expansive space for a cornerstone development with a flexible design that could also provide a variety of additional non-cruise, revenue-producing uses in the off-season, such as filming, conferences and events.

The site, near Warehouse One, consists of 13 acres of backland, two existing wharves and 20 acres of associated potential off-site parking with an estimated 2,300 spaces.

The existing World Cruise Center, at 100 Swinford St., meanwhile, consists of 22 acres, including parking, two cruise berths (Berths 90-93), two terminal buildings and a baggage handling structure. Costing $15 million overall, the main, $4.3 million building was dedicated in 1963.

The 1980s brought a cruise ship boom , thanks partly to television’s “Love Boat,” but as ships grew bigger and space along the waterfront dwindled, port officials decided it was time to add another terminal.

“Over the past 20 years, our port has invested over $1 billion in enhancing, operating and programming LA Waterfront infrastructure,” said Mike Galvin, the port’s director of Waterfront and Commercial Real Estate Development. “These two proposed cruise terminal projects represent the next stage of that investment, and the continued transformation of the waterfront into a dynamic and multiuse visitor destination.”

Some residents, though, have raised concerns about blocked ocean views, traffic and parking.

Those interested in applying can tour the two cruise terminal locations at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 23, by registering at this link .

The full Request for Proposals, or RFP, can be found at this link through the Port of Los Angeles.

Plans to pursue building an Outer Harbor terminal are not new, but were delayed by the pandemic, which essentially shut down the cruise industry. An earlier RFP process was getting underway in 2019 but was halted when the pandemic hit in 2020.

Currently, the area already is used for overflow cruise ship docking space. It offers panoramic views of the coastline and Catalina Island and has been eyed as a second cruise terminal spot for a decade.
