Laundry packing list and laundry tips while travelling

One of the strategies, and challenges, of packing light is to manage if, how, and when to do laundry. The clothes you aren’t wearing are the clothes you need to schlep around from place to place. An essential key to packing light is to pack fewer clothes in fabrics and colours that don’t need to be washed as often, have a plan to keep them clean, and have a laundry packing list to make the task as convenient as possible.

Consider how easy, and how often, something needs to be washed. For example, travel pants and leggings in darker, neutral colours can be worn for several days without washing. Chances are anything in white or light colours will need to be laundered more often and washed separately from darker colours.

Panties don’t take up much space but when washed daily, three or four pairs can suffice. Reusable panty liners worn on long travel days can help underwear (and trousers or leggings) remain fresher. To help tops remain fresher, underarm sweat vests work for some people.

For travel clothing, choose lightweight, quick-drying fabrics. Anything in merino is a good choice. Not only is it lightweight and perfect for layering, but its odour-resistant properties are legendary. For socks, the same pair of merino socks can be worn for several days, so there’s never a need to pack more than two pairs (in addition to compression socks for long flights). The same holds for base layer shirts that can be worn several times without washing. Merino can be pricey, but laundering less means it lasts longer.

Speaking of merino, let’s talk about shoes. If there are more comfortable walking shoes than AllBirds Wool Runners , I’m yet to find them. My Wool Runners are lightweight, eco-friendly, washable, and in the right colour, blend well with a capsule wardrobe. For sandals, I love my Teva Tirra . They’re also washable and spruce up nicely after time on a sandy beach or dusty trail. Havaianas Slim flip flops are lightweight and durable, and work well as shower shoes, indoor wear, or around water.

Become familiar with the care labels of your clothing. Know which pieces must be washed in cold water or laid flat to dry. Anything that can’t be washed (except for outerwear) or dry-cleaned deserves to be left at home.

As previously mentioned, reusable panty liners and underarm sweat vests help reduce odours and extend the time between washing.

Another strategy comes from the performing arts community where costumes need to be worn multiple times. Vodka is a perfect odour remover. It’s odourless, colourless, and has a sanitizing effect. Spritz the offending area with vodka and as it evaporates, the offending odours are removed.

Visiting a self-serve laundromat can be a cultural experience by chatting with locals and learning more about the neighbourhood. However, it consumes valuable travel time that could be invested elsewhere. It also involves figuring out machines and having coins and detergent to operate them.

Another approach is to have a laundry service wash, dry, and fold your clothes, but this requires trust that their products and methods won’t be detrimental to you or your clothes. And charges for services offered by hotels can be excessive.

When staying in holiday accommodation, doing laundry by the load means you’re in charge of detergents and drying methods. It also allows you to do other things while a machine is doing its thing. If there’s no dryer (or air drying is preferred), there will probably be a drying rack and plenty of other places to hang damp clothes and string your travel clothesline.

Handwashing takes a few minutes each evening, and for lightweight and quick-dry fabrics, they’re usually good to go the next day. Unless you’re accumulating laundry to wash by machine at a future stop, washing one or two items daily feels less overwhelming and requires less drying space.

If you like to soak and wash things in a sink, you may have to plan for sinks without plugs, or plugs that don’t work. Also, it’s a good idea to give a sink a good scrub to remove dirt or residue from cleaning products that can stain or discolour clothing.

For areas needing extra attention, such as collars, armpits, and crotch, work on those first. Spend extra time on stained or soiled areas. Then, swirl, swish, and knead the clothing in soapy water for about two minutes.

Another approach is to take dirty items into the shower with you, especially if the sink is lacking in some way. Lather them up, and rinse them off while showering. If the accommodation has a ‘shower bath,’ (bath and shower combo), start by adding a little water and preferred detergent to the tub. While showering, trample, squish, and agitate the clothing with your feet. This works well with larger pieces. 

Hostels, hotel rooms, and holiday apartments offer a variety of places to hang laundry to dry. When staying in a women’s dorm in a hostel, my travel clothesline finds attachment points on the bunk frame. Wooden hangers in hotel rooms and holiday apartments that can be removed from a closet can be hung on a door frame, curtain rod, ironing board, table edge, towel bar, or shower head. Some hangers have clips from which to hang socks or panties. A travel clothesline can be stretched between two stationary objects such as a bed frame, door knob, luggage rack, wall lamp, balcony rail, faucet, towel bar, bathroom hook, dresser handles, or chair. 

To expedite the drying process, squish or wring pieces out to remove as much water as possible. Smooth out any twists so clothes dry faster, keep their shape, and have fewer wrinkles. Take a towel, lay it on a flat surface, and place your pieces of wet clothing flat on top of it, separating each item. Then tightly roll the towel with the clothing inside. Once rolled, apply pressure, or step or kneel on the towel to help it absorb more moisture. Unroll the towel to remove your clothes and hang them to finish drying.

If your accommodation has an iron and ironing board, iron those pieces that could benefit from having additional moisture removed. Or use a  hairdryer for a similar purpose.

Hanging clothes outdoors in fine weather or near a fan, window, or heat source will help them dry faster. Keep in mind that clothes dry more slowly in humid climates.

On a recent trip to Poland in September, I packed two bottoms: lightweight travel pants and Lululemon leggings. I was surprised to discover that the leggings needed more than an overnight to dry. Fortunately, I was staying several days in that location, but had I washed them before a travel day, this would have been handy to know. Taking a handwashing test at home might have given me the intel I needed to choose the best time to launder different pieces of clothing.

Another consideration concerns new purchases and how they react to laundering. If they bleed, it’s better to know this before mixing them with other pieces of clothing.

If daily hand washing isn’t your thing, mix up your accommodation bookings to ensure you have access to a washing machine on a schedule that works for you. When I travel with a group of friends, we book accommodation that invariably has washing facilities. We’ll choose a ‘wash day,’ get ourselves organized, and pool our laundry into loads of lights and coloureds.

Laundry packing list

Many travellers take advantage of what’s available at their accommodation: body wash, shampoo, or bar soap. 

If you have a favourite liquid detergent, decant some into travel-sized bottles no larger than 100 ml for carry-on travel. Or purchase packets of travel-sized laundry detergent before leaving home. One advantage, especially for those with skin conditions, is that you can have confidence in a tried-and-true product.

I’m a fan of an all-purpose bar soap. My favourite is Dr Bronner’s 18-in-One Pure Castile Soap. However, the more I use it for laundry, the less I have left as bath soap. It fits perfectly in a Matador Flatpak Soap Bar Case where the bar dries while it remains sealed away. Dr Bronner’s offers the same product as a concentrated liquid in a travel size.

Better still, laundry eco-strips are a carry-on traveller’s dream. They’re ultra-concentrated, biodegradable sheets of ‘liquidless’ laundry detergent that dissolve in water. Use one for a load, two for heavily soiled laundry, or cut them in halves or quarters for laundry in a sink, shower, or a DIY dry-bag ‘washing machine.’ I’ve used Tru Earth with success, but there are many choices on the market, including Earth Breeze that gets excellent reviews and is on my list to try. Laundry sheets are lightweight, earth friendly, take up very little space, don’t leak, and a small piece goes a long way to meeting handwashing needs.

For stain removal, a Tide to Go Instant Stain Remover Pen does a decent job. It’s cheap, easy to carry, and perfect for removing stains as they appear.

Or, use hand sanitizer. In an interview with the New York Times, cleaning expert Jolie Kerr stated, “If I had to tell people to carry  just one thing  with them to handle stains on the fly, it would be hand sanitizer. It has a high concentration of alcohol in it, which is a very good stain remover and will work on everything from pen to food spills to blood.”

As soon as possible, use warm water and regular soap if you don’t have other options at your disposal. Be gentle. You’re trying to tease the stain out of the fabric, not push it deeper. Make short, quick motions as if you’re tugging the offending stain out. It’s not the time for elbow grease.

Decant a couple of shots of vodka into a travel-sized spray bottle. Or carry an empty bottle and pick up a miniature bottle of vodka during your travels. 

A dry bag is a versatile multipurpose item that can serve as a DIY washing machine. It’s especially useful when camping, and a hygienic choice when staying in facilities with communal sinks. Add laundry, water, and detergent, roll out as much air as possible, then shake, toss, tumble, agitate, and massage the bag to replicate the action of a washing machine. Repeat with a rinse cycle.

A dry bag is a more durable and earth-friendly alternative to a plastic zip-top or garbage bag. For a commercial option, some travellers choose the ‘Scrubba,’ a bag with a handy built-in washboard, air valve, and see-through window. If you’re likely to get enough use of a Scrubba to justify the space, weight, and price, here’s an excellent review from Pack Hacker that explains how to use it. The Scrubba Mini is a smaller, lighter version.

Also, a dry bag is handy when freshly washed laundry isn’t quite dry on a travel day. Packing almost-dry laundry in a dry bag is better than hanging individual pieces from a travel bag. On arrival at your new digs, remove items from the dry bag to finish the drying process.

Not all sinks have a plug, and a rubber universal sink stopper doesn’t work in all sinks. I’ve used duct tape and cling wrap with some success, and Blu Tack works well as a reusable plug. I pack a small amount, about the size of a golf ball, stored in a lightweight sealable container. At 0.8 oz / 24 g, it’s one gram lighter than my universal sink plug and much more versatile.

A retractable clothesline might be available in some types of accommodation. However, a travel clothesline takes up so little space in a travel bag that mine is packed for every trip. It’s lightweight (0.8 oz / 23 g) and doesn’t require clothespins. The hooks at both ends are more serviceable than suction cups. They loop back into the braid, expanding options for setting up the line. My favourite is the Go Travel Pegless Washing Line , with the suction cups left at home. When I stay in hostels, my travel clothesline doubles as a washing line and privacy curtain rod.

Hangers that can’t be removed from a closet rod reduce drying options. For this reason, travelling with your own offers a tried-and-true approach to hanging laundry. My experience with inflatable hangers didn’t end well when the set of two both developed leaks and were useless. However, they are lightweight and improve airflow by separating layers of clothing from each other.  Folding hangers are more reliable. There are a host of possibilities with variations in sturdiness, size, and weight. If hanging clothespins are more your style, these can be hung from a shower rod, towel rack, or back of a chair.  

Separating dirty clothes from clean ones makes it easy when it’s time to do a wash. Choose a bag that’s a good fit for you. I wash daily, so a small, lightweight handmade item made by a friend is all I need to stow one or two pairs of panties, a reusable panty liner, a couple of socks, and a merino base layer. An added advantage is that I think of my friend, Rose (who made the gift), whenever I use it.

How to Pack Dirty Clothes While Traveling

Learn how to pack dirty clothes while traveling with these smart and efficient techniques. Dirty laundry in your luggage can lead to unwanted smells and stains. Knowing where to put these clothes and how to separate them from your clean ones isn’t as taxing as you may think.

Use a Spare Packing Cube

While packing cubes are used for clean clothes, reserving one for your dirty laundry is a smart way to keep clean and dirty clothes separate.

Choose a packing cube you can easily differentiate from your other packing cubes, preferably of a different color. That way, you won’t accidentally mix your fresh and used clothes when packing to leave.

Packing cubes also allow you to store your dirty laundry anywhere in your suitcase, as the cube provides a barrier between used and fresh clothes.

Once you get home and do laundry, you can simply wash the packing cube you used.

Use a Laundry Bag

There are many types of laundry bags for travel. Be sure to choose a sturdy and washable one, as some laundry bags can easily absorb odors.

On arrival, simply find a place to store or hang your laundry bag in your hotel, Airbnb, or apartment. Fill it with laundry throughout the week, and pack it just before you leave.

If you can, try to at least stack or fold your dirty laundry as you add it to the dirty laundry bag. That way, the laundry bag will be easier to pack in your suitcase.

Put Dirty Laundry in a Compression Bag

Using a compression bag or compression packing cube is a smart option when you’re tight on space. Compression bags work like resealable zipper storage bags, removing the air from the bag once sealed.

If you use a compression bag, pack it as if the clothes were clean. That way, you can maximize space and compactly store your dirty clothes.

Once you get home, you can simply unzip the bags and put the laundry in the washing machine. For once, you don’t need to worry about the creasing!

Store in a Dry Bag

Planning on spending plenty of time outdoors, at the beach, or in the water? A dry bag may be a great option for you to store dirty clothes.

No need to panic, we have prepared a very complete list of the essential things to bring to make sure you don’t miss anything once you are there.

In order to leave no room for unforeseen events, it’s of course preferable to go through this list a few days before leaving rather than the day before departure, as you might miss some items.

Take the time to read and download it in order to identify the things that you absolutely must pack and that you might miss and that could make you lose time and money if you forget them.

You will also need to think about packing according to the type of accommodation you will be staying in, the different modes of transportation you will use during your trip, the climate and the season, as well as the activities you plan to do.

How to Pack for a Trip to Russia

What should i pack for russia.

• Clothes for going out : Nice shirt and smart trousers for men, smart trousers and top or dress for women
• Personal items : Insect repellent and sun-cream, wet wipes and hand sanitiser, medications, extension cords, earplugs and an eye mask

One of the biggest questions before travelling anywhere, is what to pack. But for those going on a Russian tour, this can be simpler than expected because essentially, Russia only has two seasons, winter and summer. The leaves turn golden for a mere two or three weeks before the temperatures rapidly drop and winter begins, and spring is more of a melting period, with snow and ice seen even as late as May.

Read on to find out what to pack, and how to be comfortable and prepared in every situation.

What clothes to wear in Russia?

Clothes for winter.

Russia is spectacularly beautiful in the wintertime. A dusting of snow covers the palaces, churches and museums, and the icy forests truly look like something out of a fairy tale. But regardless of the magical atmosphere, the outside world is generally very cold. In the cities you will most likely be visiting, winter temperatures are in the range of -10 to -20 degrees Celsius, or 14 to -4 degrees Fahrenheit, but can be even lower.

Layers are vital. For maximum comfort (and safety), bring sweatshirts or hoodies, warm long trousers or extra thick tights, and thermal underwear. A long, warm coat is highly recommended. Not only will it keep you insulated from the cold, but if you slip on the ice it will cushion you and protect your clothes. And of course, it goes without saying that you must bring a hat, scarf and gloves. Ideally, very warm gloves, a fur or wool hat which covers your ears, and a scarf which can be wrapped around your face as well.

Even if the outside world is an icy -30, the inside of Russian buildings remain toasty and warm - heating is generated in a centralised location and switched on in September/October, providing automatic and constant heating for all the buildings in the locality and Russians like it very warm indoors. So, make sure to also bring indoor clothes and lighter layers - a suitcase full of only thick jumpers will do you no favours when you’re inside.

One of the most vital items on your list should be a warm pair of waterproof shoes, as Russia’s sidewalks and streets transform into a quagmire of slush and snow during winter. Shoes should have grippy treads as ice is often more problematic than snow, and the pavement can turn into an uneven mountain of black ice. Make sure to bring warm socks, preferably those sold in hiking/outdoor shops.

For those travelling to Siberia , the weather will be significantly colder, so pack accordingly. If you plan on doing activities such as skiing or snowboarding then bring waterproof trousers, and sunglasses are a good idea if you will spend a lot of time outside in the snow.

Clothes for summer

Despite its reputation, Russia isn’t always covered in snow. Summer is the perfect time to explore the country. Take a stroll any time of day or night, appreciate the White Nights in northern Russia, or go on a camping trip. Temperatures are generally in the range of 20 - 30 degrees Celsius, or 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Air conditioning is not a common sight in Russia, and Russian people have an innate fear of drafts so even on public transport in the middle of summer, windows are often kept shut. Lightweight and breathable clothing is your best bet, and a sunhat and sunglasses are essential items.

The weather can still be unpredictable, so bring a lightweight jacket and jumper for cooler evenings, and an umbrella too, especially if you’re visiting St. Petersburg . Russians dress modestly so you may feel uncomfortable in anything very short or low cut. To be respectful when visiting Russia’s churches, bring a scarf to cover your head and shoulders and a bottom layer of modest length.

Clothes for going out

There is a famous saying that ‘good clothes open all doors’ - and it’s safe to say that Russians dress impeccably when going to the theatre, a nice restaurant, or a nightclub. You do not have to bring a tuxedo or an evening gown, as low-key elegance is better than extravagance. For men, a nice shirt, smart trousers and shoes won’t go amiss. And for women, smart trousers and top or an elegant dress, and heels or nice boots. In winter, it is perfectly normal to change shoes at the theatre cloakroom if you don’t want to risk your high heels on the ice. Upmarket Russian nightclubs often have strict ‘face control’ who turn away those who they consider to be badly dressed, so bring a stylish outfit.

TRAVELERS ASK: Can you wear jeans in Russia?

It’s perfectly acceptable to wear jeans in Russia. Denim is enormously popular among Russians and you will be allowed into museums, churches and restaurants wearing jeans. However, Russians love to dress up, so wear smarter clothes for upmarket restaurants, nightclubs or the theatre. Jeans alone are insufficient for the Russian winter, so pack thermal underwear or tights accordingly.

Personal items and toiletries

You should bring insect repellent if visiting during summer, especially when travelling to Siberia - mosquitoes and horseflies have a voracious appetite. And don’t forget your sun cream!

Bring tissues, wet wipes and hand sanitiser. Public toilets are not very hygienic anywhere in Russia.

Russia has plenty of toiletry and cosmetic shops, so you won’t be in trouble if you forget your favourite shampoo or makeup. But make sure to bring any medication that you may need, as you may not be able to get it when you’re in Russia. Also, it’s a good idea to double check that your medication is legal in Russia - see Russian Customs Rules .

Bring a few different bags. A travel belt is the best way to safely carry your money and passports, and a small handbag or daysack will allow you to comfortably explore any Russian town or city. Russia uses two pin plug sockets (same as Europe) so remember your travel adaptors. One of the best tips for travelling abroad is to bring an extension cord from your home country with an adapter. For travelling on the Trans-Siberian Express or other long distance trains, a good quality portable charger will prove a lifesaver. Bring sleeping clothes which you would feel comfortable wearing while in a public space, slippers or sandals, and earplugs and an eye mask.

And lastly, don’t forget to pack your favourite book by one of Russia’s great writers. There is absolutely no better place to enjoy Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, or Bulgakov than when you’re in Russia - immersed in their culture and history!

Our view of a city can be greatly influenced by how clean or dirty it is. Conversely, when a city is sparklingly clean it is a delight to be there. Add to that a healthy environmental policy and we feel good about visiting.

Massive strides have been made towards sustainability in recent years, prompted by fears of global warming and fuel resources running out. Many cities now have strict policies on water use, recycling, and air emissions. As this becomes a trend for municipal councils, it influences how the world views a city and can impact on sporting and cultural events. Governments and sporting bodies are less likely to offer an event such as the Olympics, to a city that is struggling to prove its environmental worth.

However, some cities suffer from severe natural disasters and poverty and little seems to impact their regeneration. Where poverty is rife, nature is unkind, and the city is struggling to survive, dirt and filth often follow, especially as populations increase and infrastructure struggles to cope.

19 Dirtiest: Port Au Prince, Haiti

Port Au Prince is a sprawling city comprising a large slum area on its hillsides. It suffered from an earthquake in 2010, resulting in the devastation of many buildings in the city. The city is also victim to various hurricanes, making it a dangerous place to inhabit.

The city, which is home to many factories, used to be a popular tourist destination and cruise ship stop, but that has tapered off in recent years due to trouble and lack of safety. Although there has been regeneration since the natural disasters, the city suffers from high unemployment and poverty, and many residents still live in tents or rubble.

18 Dirtiest: Mexico City, Mexico

Mexico City and its environs are home to around 26 million people, with nearly 9 million in the actual city. It is surrounded by mountains and volcanoes, and sits in the resulting bowl, making the air quality very poor. The pollution is compounded by industry and carbon emissions. There is a visible layer of smog in the city every day.

The population of the city has ballooned in recent decades and it has struggled to cope to support the influx of people. It has a reputation for being dangerous as a result of natural disasters, crime, and air pollution. There are also fears of corruption in the police and other government institutions.

17 Dirtiest: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

The capital of Ethiopia is still part of a third world country, with some people having no access to a flushing toilet. It has a moderate crime level and Forbes found it to be the sixth dirtiest city in the world. The main reason for this finding was the lack of adequate sanitation, which means that infant mortality and child death rates are high.

Many inhabitants are living below the poverty line and there are many sex workers who are forced to work to try and feed themselves and their families. Slums and well-to-do residencies exist side by side in some parts of Addis Ababa, making it hard to avoid the dirt and poverty.

16 Dirtiest: Mumbai, India

Visitors report that Mumbai is one of the dirtiest places in India and that it seems seedy and somewhat dodgy in comparison to its neighboring cities. There is immense poverty and mutilated beggars inhabit many street corners.

Although it is India’s financial capital, many Indians come to Mumbai to make money with the plan of leaving as quickly as possible. This gives them less of a sense of municipal pride and this shows in their lack of respect for the cleanliness of the city. One commentator said that Indians have more of a sense of their rights and less sense of duty, which might go some way to explain the filth that is evident in the city.

15 Dirtiest: Baghdad, Iraq

Baghdad has seen more than its fair share of troubles over the years. This has doubtless contributed to the fact that it is now a very dirty city and the river Tigris that flows through it gets dirtier by the year. Much wastewater goes untreated and this leads to dangerous pollution of water and results in illness.

There is not sufficient infrastructure to deal with the cleanliness crisis, with hospitals and even an oil refinery tipping waste into the swollen river. Locals have been forced to rely on mobile water tankers at times to avoid getting ill from the local drinking water.

The Moscow region is home to a landfill crisis, which is polluting the area with potentially toxic waste. There is little or no recycling initiative in Moscow, and the increasing landfill sites are causing problems to locals and inhabitants of nearby towns, who sometimes have to rely on gas masks to avoid pollution.

Moscow doesn’t even have a reliable source of clean drinking water, and the air pollution compounds this issue with many Muscovites dealing with lung disease and other pollution-related illnesses. The problem is exacerbated in snowy weather when roads are sanded, which increases the dirt on the streets when the snow melts.

13 Dirtiest: Delhi, India

Many Delhi inhabitants take part in the habit of chewing paan, a Betel leaf parcel that might contain tobacco, and which is used as a palate cleanser. However, this leads to unsightly red marks on many sidewalks, where paan chewers have spat out red liquid after chewing the leaf.

Visitors report never-ending seas of rubbish in Delhi, with a lingering smell of sewage and rotting food. Wandering animals are a problem, with dogs and even cows roaming the streets and sifting through the rubbish. Delhi is a very overcrowded city as well, with numerous people and vehicles vying for space, which all adds to the feeling of untidiness and claustrophobia.

Antananarivo has problems with air pollution and also water quality, which puts it on the list of dirtiest cities. Another problem is inefficient garbage disposal that increases germs and smells on the streets. Although much of Madagascar is a tourist haven, Antananarivo is full of pollution due to industrialization and also as a result of deforestation in the area, which reduces the carbon-busting oxygen levels.

The capital of Madagascar is highly populated, and its internal resources cannot cope. This increases the drain on sanitation and increases pollution and is at odds with the tropical paradise that many people view as the island of Madagascar.

Dhaka is the most densely populated city in the world and it struggles to offer adequate housing and sanitation to its inhabitants. It is common for people to urinate and even defecate in the street, and to drop litter wherever they like. Piles of litter build up and pose a huge health problem.

As the political, cultural and economic center of Bangladesh, Dhaka, attracts many rural immigrants, hence the problem of overcrowding is exacerbated. There is a lot of congestion in the city and an inefficient transportation system, leading to air pollution, among the other problems. 10 Dirtiest: Linfen, China

In 2007, Linfen was declared the most polluted city in the world. There is a great deal of coal mining in the area that depreciates the air quality to the point that washing that is hung out to dry, turns black in the air. There are huge problems with respiratory disease in the city, with inhabitants breathing in ash and dust on a daily basis.

While coal remains the main source of fuel for China, Linfen and the surrounding area will continue to mine, and the air will continue to be polluted. Linfen has made efforts to improve the situation, with trucks spraying water on the streets to keep them cleaner, but it still remains a fact that life expectancy is shorter here than elsewhere in China due to lung diseases.

Zurich is not only clean, but it has also been named the most sustainable city in the world. It is the financial and banking center of Switzerland and has a wealth of cultural delights, making it a popular spot for visitor and Swiss nationals searching for a living space.

Sitting on the north point of Lake Zurich, the city has undergone a facelift of late. It has a thriving nightlife, including a huge techno party that takes place every August. The streets of Zurich are immaculately clean and the mountain air is fresh, even the trams run on time.

Lonely Planet named Wellington the coolest little city in the world. It is famous for its bars and restaurants, and with the farmland to its north and being on the coast of the ocean, it has an abundance of produce to select from.

The capital of New Zealand, Wellington, is a well-preserved city that looks after its natural treasures and doing all it can to be sustainable. Air pollution is greatly reduced by improvements to the public transport system, which is very well used. In fact, Wellington was voted the number one place to live in the world in a survey by Deutsche Bank in 2017.

7 Cleanest:  Oslo, Norway

Although it is a very expensive city, Oslo is very well kept and extremely clean. It is a very green city and offers rentable bikes and an updated public transport system that helps keep the air clean. The city has an automatic trash system that collects trash underground, keeping sidewalks clean and tidy.

Cleaning up the city is a cultural norm for the residents of Oslo who also participate in regular clean-up days. It is situated between the mountains and the sea, giving it superior air quality from its natural environment. It has plenty of parks and outdoor spaces that all add to the feeling of cleanliness in the city.

6 Cleanest:  Toronto, Canada

With low air pollution and good clean air, Toronto ticks the boxes when it comes to a good environment. It is also known for great restaurants and excellent coffee. Despite being a capital city it has a charming, friendly feel. The bays and hills give the city a feeling of space and fresh air. Toronto is an expensive city to live in, but the salaries are higher than the national average.

Brisbane is the capital of the ‘sunshine state’ of Queensland. On its South Bank, you will find a man-made beach, a subtropical rainforest and plenty of cultural points of interest, right in the middle of a city. It also has a beautiful Botanical Garden, if you crave nature and peace.

The city has a population of over two million and yet maintains excellent levels of cleanliness, which is quite remarkable.

4 Cleanest:  Portland, Oregon, USA

Portland is often voted the greenest city in America and has pioneered metropolitan redevelopment. It has many open green spaces that contribute to the air quality and the ambient atmosphere. It has a long-term view of sustainability and focuses on ensuring that the city will be able to support its population well into the future without comprising sustainability.

Public transportation has been regenerated and as much of it as possible is run with carbon emissions in mind. The city does not add fluoride to its water and this is fully supported by inhabitants who have voted on the issue.

3 Cleanest:  Nottingham, the UK

Nottingham has won an award as Britain’s cleanest city and has made great strides towards improving cleanliness and pollution. The council has even introduced measures to ensure that noise pollution doesn’t upset local residents. They have also reduced carbon emissions to the extent that they won an environmental award.

The city has been the focus of a huge regeneration plan over the past decade, which has impacted the transportation and housing systems, as well as improving sustainability. Many areas and buildings that were falling into disrepair have been demolished to give way to new and exciting architecture and open spaces.

Kobe is known as the cleanest city in Japan. The reasons for this include its effective waste disposal system that despite its 1.5 million residents, keeps it clean. Local residents are very keen on cleanliness and take their environmental responsibilities seriously. The Japanese are known to be obsessed with cleanliness and Kobe is no exception.

Quality of life is regarded as very good, with a superior education, health, and transportation systems. The city has plenty of green, open spaces and its sidewalks and shops are particularly clean. Singapore is known as an expensive tax haven but is also a forerunner in financial and business matters. It is home to several nature reserves and the government has revealed an aim to make Singapore a ‘garden city’ to improve quality of life and preserve wildlife.

The number of private cars in Singapore is restricted to avoid pollution and the public transportation system is highly developed. The water quality is high, and Singapore recycles and desalinates water to preserve stocks. Improvements in water quality and sanitation mean that Singapore has one of the highest life expectancy figures in the world.
