Get to Know Carnival Dream

It's one thing to be fun, but it's another thing to be first. Carnival Dream was at the forefront of a recent wave of amazingly innovative and fun Carnival ships. As the genesis of the Dream class, Carnival Dream set the direction for the ships that followed in her footsteps — first Carnival Magic and then Carnival Breeze. But back to Carnival Dream: the ship itself is a unique experience with the way-fun RedFrog Rum Bar ® and the very cool BlueIguana Tequila Bar ™ . Get your appetite ready, because you're gonna need it. Carnival Dream features two dual-level dining rooms, a gourmet steakhouse and dedicated sushi spot Bonsai Sushi ™ . It's also got a full menu of our latest and greatest casual spots for a bite: BlueIguana Cantina ™ , Pizzeria del Capitano, Guy's Burger Joint ™ and Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse ™ . (That's Guy as in Guy Fieri, by the way — so you know the food's delish.) Carnival Dream also features the borderline-magical Alchemy Bar ® and Ocean Plaza, which combines tasty treats with perhaps even tastier entertainment. Entertainment options are all up and down the ship, and so is soaking-wet fun, from the heart-racing waterslide action at Carnival WaterWorks ™ to the soul-soothing Thalassotherapy pool at the Cloud 9 Spa ™ . Despite its name, Carnival Dream is definitely a reality. Can't believe it? Pinch yourself... and book your dream cruise today.

Review: Carnival Dream on a Bahamas Cruise from Galveston, Texas

If you’re thinking about a little longer cruise from Galveston, this 8-day Carnival Dream cruise to the Bahamas might be perfect for you.

With my husband’s 40th birthday around the corner and the pandemic cruise in the rear view mirror, an October birthday cruise seemed like the best way to celebrate.

Carnival Dream at Sea during sunset.

Carnival Dream Cruise from Galveston Review

Carnival is my husband’s favorite cruise line and he regularly gets casino offers for free inside cabins. After browsing through the various offers, we identified a Carnival Dream cruise from Galveston as the perfect sailing.

Even after paying to upgrade to a balcony, the price was still low, as was the price of our flights to Houston.

I was also intrigued by the itinerary. Not many cruises from Texas go to the Bahamas and this itinerary included two ports we’d never been to: Freeport and Half Moon Cay. Plus, it was an eight-day itinerary, instead of a one-week cruise. It might not seem like a lot, but I’ll always take an extra day of vacation!

Port Visits Included:

  • Freeport (Port Lucaya)
  • Half Moon Cay (Holland America’s private island)
  • Nassau (Capital city of the Bahamas)

Fast Facts About Carnival Dream

Year built: 2009 Year refurbished: 2020 Tonnage: 130,000 Decks: 14 Passengers at double occupancy: 3,646 Crew: 1,367 Total staterooms: 1,823 staterooms

Welcome Aboard Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Dream

Embarkation at the port of Galveston is slow. There are no separate lines here for different loyalty levels, or even for those staying in suites.

From there, it was about 10 to 15 minutes to go through security, check-in at the desk and get on the ship. In this piece of the check-in process, there is a separate line for those in suites, but not for different loyalty levels.

The silver lining to the long wait is that by the time you get through it all, the ship is open for boarding.

Carnival Dream First Impressions

Carnival isn’t kidding when it calls its ships the “fun ships.” Despite only being early October, Carnival Dream was decked out for Halloween, complete with a giant statue of a pumpkin-headed pirate captain (eye patch and all) at his wheel in the atrium.

Throughout the sailing, Carnival embraced the Halloween spirit with a pumpkin scavenger hunt and costume party. And guests were just as enthusiastic, with plenty of Halloween-themed door decorations. It made walking up and down the halls much less boring than usual!

Carnival Dream Halloween decorations

If cruise lines have personalities, Carnival is a high extrovert. Crew are friendly and ready to chat. Passengers want to get to know each other. And everyone is on board to have fun. It’s one of the things I love the most about cruising on Carnival. And Dream didn’t disappoint.

Crew quickly knew my name and always asked about my day. Chatting with strangers was a daily occurrence.

Deck parties are something else on a Carnival cruise ship and our cruise directory Deon had parties planned for every night of the cruise.

Carnival Dream Atrium

But it wasn’t all the same Carnival I knew before the pandemic. On this Carnival Dream cruise from Galveston, it didn’t take long before I noticed cost cutting measures. There was a level of mediocrity I’ve never experienced before, particularly in the dining room. Menus were small. Food was bland. Entertainment was just okay.

While I ended up having a great time – it was a cruise, after all! – I walked away from Carnival Dream thinking, “Wow, that was meh.”

Carnival Dream Standard Balcony Stateroom

My standard balcony cabin on Carnival Dream was comfortable. Though as someone who always has a computer with her, I would have liked just a bit more desk space. But it had a couch, which is something I always appreciate having in a cruise cabin.

Carnival Dream Balcony stateroom

Located on Deck 8, our room (8379) had a queen-sized bed with a nightstand (with lamp) on either side, the aforementioned couch and a small oval table.

Underneath the desk area is a cabinet with a couple of shelves, the mini-fridge, and another cabinet with a few narrow shelves.

As with all Carnival ships, the closet is divided into three sections, two with space for hanging clothes and the third with shelves. I love that Carnival didn’t waste a shelf here by placing the safe there.

On Carnival Dream , the safe is on a shelf near the mini-fridge. There are lots of hangers, but because we always pack too much clothing we had to ask for extras.

The balcony felt small, but we hardly used it except to step out onto for sailaways and to dry our wet bathing suits.

Generally speaking, I like Carnival bathrooms, other than the clingy plastic shower curtains (though this one didn’t cling!).

There’s always plenty of glass shelf space for all of our various bathroom amenities. While there’s not really enough room for two people to be in there at the same time, it doesn’t feel too terribly cramped.

Inside the shower stall you’ll find a dispenser with shampoo and shower gel. If you’re at all picky about the products you use, bring your own.

Changes with Stateroom Attendant Service

One of the many cost-cutting changes I discovered onboard Dream was a change in how often the room stewards will service your cabin. Prior to the pandemic, the line gave people a choice of either morning, night or both. On Carnival Dream , we could only choose morning or night.

We chose morning, which meant no turn down and an ice bucket that was mostly water by the time I needed it in the evening.

One signature of Carnival stateroom service that hasn’t changed are the fun towel animals your room steward leaves on the bed each day. We always carefully place our towel animals along the edge of our couch and thankfully our room steward left them there.

By the end of the cruise, we had a menagerie that including an elephant, dinosaur, rhinoceros, bunny rabbit, swans, and more.

My biggest complaint about our room was the lack of outlets. I know it’s an older ship, but seriously, one U.S.-style outlet? And no USB plugins? That’s not nearly enough for the modern cruiser, and certainly not for this digital nomad!

And it’s not like Carnival Dream hasn’t been refurbished. The most recent was in 2020. That should have been one of the changes made.

To be fair, there was a European-style outlet as well, but it’s been so long since I’ve had to rely on a converter that I hadn’t brought one.

Dining on Carnival Dream

The dining room is where Carnival’s cost-cutting changes are most evident. Fewer items on the menu. No side dishes (the line used to have three to four rotating side dishes every night). No “Port of Call” options to represent the destinations on the itinerary.

And, to be blunt, what options there were, weren’t great. They weren’t bad per se, but they just weren’t great. They were average. A solid 3 out of 5.

With that said, my husband loved every one of the Rare Finds appetizers he ordered that included braised rabbit, frog legs and alligator beignets.

I quickly discovered, however, that I could have any of the salads turned into an entrée-sized portion and that quickly became my go-to for the cruise.

And if there wasn’t a salad I liked, they were more than happy to make a large house salad with my choice of protein. After that, I loved every meal I had in the main dining room.

Insider Tip: Vegetarians I know who cruise Carnival rave about the Indian entrees in the main dining rooms. I’m not a fan of Indian cuisine, but if that’s your thing, you most likely won’t be disappointed.

You know what else won’t disappoint? Carnival’s famous chocolate melting cake. If you’ve never had one (and you like chocolate) you must order it at least once! Warm, rich and gooey, and topped off with vanilla ice cream. It’s to die for!

Insider Tip: Not into what’s on the dessert menu? Carnival has a secret banana split dessert for people in the know. You just have to ask for it.

Our sailing had four seadays, so for lunch we usually had the Seaday Brunch, a Carnival signature. The menu has both breakfast and lunch options.

The first day, I ordered the Signature Tower, which comes with bagels and two choices of ahi tuna, egg or shrimp salad, plus smoked salmon and gravlax. I chose the smoked salmon and ahi tuna salad.

Apparently, the word “salad” doesn’t mean what you think it does when preceded by “ahi tuna” as I got tuna tartare. My favorite Seaday brunch came straight from the kid’s menu: mozzarella sticks and chicken nuggets!

Carnival Dream Dining Room Service

If the food in the main dining rooms isn’t anything to write home about, the service was excellent. Our main dining room waiter Bojan (we sat in the same section of Crimson every night) was one of the best I’ve ever had.

Within two days, he always had a Coke Zero waiting for me, knew I don’t like pepper with my food, and made sure I got two pats of butter instead of one.

Insider Tip: Even though Carnival Cruise Line carries Pepsi products onboard, they do have Coke Zero. You just have to ask for it by name.

Main dining on Carnival Dream is divided between two restaurants (Crimson and Scarlet). One is for those with set seating. The other is for those who do Your Time Dining.

If you show up early enough, you can walk up and get seated. Otherwise, you’ll need to use your app to check in and you’ll be alerted when your table is ready. We tend to eat early but did use the app. Our wait was never longer than five minutes.

By far my best meal onboard Carnival Dream was in the steakhouse, something I don’t say too often since I don’t eat red meat.

I started with a young lettuce salad that came with a yogurt dressing. Delish! For my main course, I had a Dover Sole that was excellent, then upped the indulgence level with a side of yummy mac n’ cheese.

My husband had the grilled lamb chops, that came with three pieces of lamb that he said were perfectly cooked.

If you’re doing to eat at the steakhouse, which costs $38 per person, be sure to have a small lunch. You will leave stuffed!

More Dining Options on Carnival Dream

There are a handful of other restaurants onboard Carnival Dream including BlueIguana Cantina, Guy’s Burger Joint, Bonsai Sushi (extra cost), Pizzeria del Capitano and Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse.

Of these, I only tried out Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse, and then only to taste the collard greens with turkey. But judging from the piled high plates of savory smoked meats, people were loving the BBQ here. It was a cruise from Galveston, after all.

Insider Tip: If you prefer bottled water to tap water, pre-order it! It’s much less expensive than buying it onboard and all Carnival Dream cabins have a mini-fridge.

One quick note. On this Carnival Dream cruise from Galveston, as on many cruise lines today, menus are mostly digital in all venues. You access the menu (whether in a restaurant or at a bar) by scanning a QR code with your phone. For those who don’t have their phones with them or prefer a paper menu, you can ask for one.

Entertainment and Onboard Activities on Carnival Dream

With the exception of the comedy club, entertainment on Carnival Dream was another disappointment for me.

Carnival is lagging behind other cruise lines when it comes to entertainment. The line is sticking with the traditional song-and-dance revues. As with the food onboard, they’re not bad. They’re just not great.

For someone who’s cruised a lot, they’re not interesting. (Out of the three revue shows, I’d already seen two of them.)

And on Carnival Dream , for some reason, all three of the revue shows were stacked up in the first few days, leaving only guest entertainers and onboard games shows in the main theater for the rest of the cruise.

Best and Worst Entertainment, in My Opinion

I needed to remind myself that this Carnival Dream cruise was from Galveston, Texas. Thus leading to what I felt was the worst performance for me was a Guinness record holding rope trick cowboy who was several years past his prime. He readily admitted he was out of practice and often needed a second or third attempt to get a trick right.

To be fair, the mostly Texas-based crowd seemed to be loving it. But this Jersey girl couldn’t get out of the theater fast enough.

My favorite entertainment was the comedy club that we went to any night there was standup scheduled. The comics didn’t disappoint, though one of the acts wasn’t a great fit for the Texas, Alabama, and Oklahoma crowd who often didn’t get his jokes.

Insider Tip: Deck 5 is your friend. It’s the only deck, other than cabin decks and top outdoor decks that you can walk all the way forward or all the way back.

There’s lots to do during the day. My husband and I are trivia hounds so we hit every session except some of the themed ones we knew nothing about (like a “The Office” themed session).

Our favorites were the music trivias led by a young Mexican guy from the entertainment team whose antics eclipsed the actual trivia and were a total hoot.

One of the more popular activities was the morning arts and crafts. Every table in Ocean Plaza was taken during these morning sessions.

More Daily Games

Flash forward most of the day and the deck parties on Carnival Dream , usually around 10 p.m. were always enthusiastically attended. Most nights there was a different theme (80s, white party, Halloween, etc.) and people were super into it.

Other very popular activities on Dream included Bingo, Deal or No Deal, pool games and competitions, and gaming in the casino. And, of course, you’ll find the usual art seminars and auctions, wellness “seminars” (really, barely concealed sales pitches).

Who’s Onboard Departing from Galveston

The vast majority of people onboard Carnival Dream that cruise from Galveston are from Texas. Another large percentage were from states like Oklahoma and Arkansas.

I’d venture a guess that 90% of the people onboard drove to the port, even if the drive took them seven to eight hours!

Our sailing happened to coincide with a school holiday so there were some families onboard. But there were so few children, the children’s program didn’t operate.

Passengers on Carnival Dream are all ages, from young newlyweds to couples celebrating their 50th anniversary. As mentioned above, Carnival attracts an extroverted crowd and everyone is friendly and up for a chat whether you’re in the buffet, elevator or sharing a table in the casino.

Final Thoughts on my Carnival Dream Cruise from Galveston

A cruise is what you make of it and overall, I had a great time on my Carnival Dream cruise. It was a perfect mix of fun, relaxation, and work. And, even though I wasn’t thrilled with the food, once I started having salads every night, I was more than happy with my meals.

The service on a Carnival ship is always some of the friendliest at sea, and I loved getting to know our waiter and other crew members. Comedy was always fun and when I wasn’t playing trivia, I was working, at the spa or taking a nap! What’s to complain about?!

Insider Tip: If you pre-purchase any spa services, the amount you paid will show up as a credit on your account and you’ll be charged the full amount at the time of service.

A note for others, like me, who need strong Internet when traveling. For some reason, the signal on Carnival Dream was never strong enough for Wi-Fi calling but I was able to stream Netflix at the gym.

Disclosure: I paid a casino fare for my Carnival Dream cruise, but was provided one free unlimited Wi-Fi package. All opinions are my own and reflect my cruise experience and observations.

Galveston cruise port: A guide to cruising from Texas

Melinda Crow

The Port of Galveston is the fourth-most-popular cruise home port in the U.S., having hosted 1.49 million cruise passengers in 2023.

While that's still a small number compared to the Florida ports ( Miami , Port Canaveral near Orlando and Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades ), the Port of Galveston continues to grow. The ships are getting bigger, cruise lines are expanding the itineraries they offer from Galveston and, in 2025, MSC Cruises will begin homeporting in Galveston with the introduction of year-round sailings on MSC Seascape . The total number of ship calls on the port's 2024 calendar is 388.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Most cruises from Galveston visit the Western Caribbean destinations of Cozumel, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; Belize; Jamaica; and Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. However, you can find other options; for example, Carnival Cruise Line offers longer sailings (up to 14 nights) that include Eastern and Southern Caribbean ports.

Galveston itself is a beach destination worth spending time in either pre- or post-cruise, with a variety of hotel choices ranging from economy to luxury to historic. Families can find plenty to enjoy, and adults can enjoy the city's vibrant nightlife.

Port of Galveston cruise terminal information

Terminals 25 and 28: 2502 Harborside Dr., Galveston, Texas 77550

Terminal 10: 1028 Harborside Dr., Galveston, Texas 77550

Terminal 16: 1401 Harborside Dr., Galveston, Texas 77550 (tentative address)

Number of terminals: Four (as of 2025)

Cruise lines sailing from the Port of Galveston

Terminal 10

Royal Caribbean bases three ships here, offering a mix of eight-night Bahamas cruises, which visit Perfect Day at CocoCay, and four- to eight-night cruises primarily in the Western Caribbean.

Terminal 16 (opening in November 2025)

MSC Cruises will base MSC Seascape year-round at a new terminal in Galveston. The ship will sail to the Western Caribbean, visiting Cozumel, Roatan and Mexico's Costa Maya.

Terminals 25 and 28

Multiple cruise lines share terminals 25 and 28. Carnival rotates a fleet of four ships year-round in Galveston, including the line's Texas flagship, Carnival Jubilee . The fleet offers four- to 14-night cruises throughout Mexico, the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

Princess Cruises sails seasonally from Galveston, offering four- to 11-night cruises in the Caribbean and Bahamas.

Norwegian Cruise Line rotates a variety of ships seasonally through the Port of Galveston, offering seven- to 14-night sailings throughout the Caribbean, including visits to the line's private island, Harvest Caye, in Belize. Norwegian also sometimes offers one-way cruises from Galveston on point-to-point sailings to other destinations like Central and South America.

Disney Magic runs seasonally from Galveston, offering four- to six-night Western Caribbean itineraries.

You can find full calendars for the port on its website.

Closest airports to the Galveston cruise port

George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is in north Houston, approximately 71 miles from the Port of Galveston. Airlines that fly to IAH include United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, Spirit Airlines, Frontier Airlines and Alaska Airlines. Delta fans can save with the airline's annual companion certificate via its American Express-branded credit cards.

IAH is a United hub, with airline-branded lounges in four of the five terminals, including a Polaris Lounge in Terminal E. Terminal D at IAH features an Amex Centurion Lounge with access for holders of The Platinum Card® from American Express .

William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) is a bit closer to the port (41 miles) but is served by fewer airlines. Look for flights on Southwest Airlines, Jet Blue, American and Delta. Southwest offers the opportunity to fly two-for-one with the Southwest Companion Pass .

Houston Hobby lacks luxury lounges, but does have a Gameway gaming lounge, with access available to Priority Pass members via a selection of credit cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® or Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card .

How to get to the Port of Galveston

carnival 8 day cruise galveston

Cruisers have multiple options for getting to the Port of Galveston, including:

The port of Galveston is on a coastal barrier island south of the city of Houston. The main highway into Galveston is Interstate Highway 45. It is possible to arrive from the east using the Port Bolivar car ferry, but the potential for ferry delays often outweighs the extra driving time it takes to go around the bay to reach the I-45 bridge.

Car rentals between IAH or HOU and Galveston

Currently, only Enterprise offers rental drop-offs in Galveston. With one-way fees and fuel, a midsize car or SUV could cost $200 for an overnight rental. This option gains value if your travel group has plans for exploring a bit pre- or post-cruise. You'll still need transportation from the Enterprise facility to the port, a distance of roughly 3 1/2 miles.

Cruise line airport transfers

You can travel from either Houston airport to the Port of Galveston on embarkation day via transfers prepurchased from the cruise lines. These are usually offered to passengers who buy air through the cruise line, but even those who book independently can call to make the purchase.

Carnival has instructions online for booking transfers from Houston airports, including flight timing restrictions. The cost is currently $58.99 per person from IAH and $41.99 per person from HOU. Return transfers would be similarly priced.

Independent airport shuttles from Houston airports to the cruise port

Local companies operate shuttle services between both Houston airports and Galveston, either to the cruise port or to a Galveston hotel. Galveston Express has shared van rides starting at $40 per person each way.

Independent van/car services

Multiple companies offer private car service from the airports to either the pier or a Galveston hotel. SuperShuttle offers private car service to the port starting at $80 per person. Blacklane offers chauffeured car service, averaging around $200 from either airport to the port, for up to three people and two bags. A larger Mercedes van for up to five passengers will cost around $250.

Hotel shuttles

Roughly half of the hotels located in Galveston offer free shuttles to the cruise pier. Hotels outside of Galveston rarely provide shuttles to the port.

Taxis and ride-hailing services

Getting from a Galveston hotel to the port via ride-hailing service, such as Uber or Lyft , is possible, but not always your best choice. Galveston is a relatively small island and when two or more ships are departing on the same day, extended wait times for pickups at your hotel can cause delays and surge pricing can make the trip more expensive than you anticipated.

Taxis and ride-hailing services are available at both Houston airports. Taxis are metered, with fares averaging $165 from IAH. For ride-hailing services, follow signs and use your apps for directions to pickup points. We checked a prebooked Uber from IAH and were shown a starting fare of $98.

Public transportation

Galveston does not offer public transportation to the cruise port. The Galveston Island Trolley has bus and rail lines that are ideal for traveling between pre- or post-cruise hotels and on-island attractions, but it stops short of the port.

Port of Galveston parking

carnival 8 day cruise galveston

Galveston cruise passengers often drive to the port, so parking options abound. These include both official Port of Galveston parking and private lots. For guests not staying in a Galveston hotel, private parking lots are the cheapest option. If your plan includes a hotel stay and your hotel offers a parking package, it is almost guaranteed to be at a lower price than the lots closer to the port. Reservations made well in advance are recommended for all parking options.

On-site parking

Parking for terminals 25 and 28 is a bit spread out. Some lots have shuttle service, others are walking access only. The walk can be as far as two blocks. You can choose from covered and uncovered options, with prices ranging from $22 to $26.

Parking at the newer Royal Caribbean Terminal 10 includes shuttle services for all lots. All parking at Terminal 10 is uncovered. The price per day is $22 to $25.

Private parking facilities

Private parking options near the terminals include indoor and covered parking, all with shuttles. Some service only terminals 25 and 28, while others will also service Terminal 10. If the reservation form doesn't list your cruise ship or sailing date, it means that lot doesn't serve the terminal you need.

Prices are competitive and usually lower than official port parking. For example, Lighthouse Parking beats the terminal's official parking lots, offering covered parking for around $20 per day, with shuttle service to all terminals.

Some, like Galveston Park N Cruise, offer discounts for prepaying. That lot only serves terminals 25 and 28 (Carnival and Princess) and does not provide a shuttle because it's across the street from the terminal. Prepaid rates for indoor parking are as low as $18.50 per day for a seven-night cruise.

Park-and-cruise

If you plan an overnight stay in Galveston, the cheapest parking option is a hotel with a parking package. Many Galveston hotels offer cruise parking to guests who stay either before or after a cruise. Some offer parking free of charge; most charge a fee for leaving your car behind. The best scenario is a hotel with both a parking option and a shuttle to the port.

Hotels near the Galveston cruise port

carnival 8 day cruise galveston

Hotels are abundant in Galveston, all of them 10 miles or less from the port. Because this is both a small port town and a vacation destination, rates and room availability fluctuate widely. Whether you need a one-night stay as close as possible to the port or are looking for a longer stay to fully explore this charming beach town, here are some of the many choices to consider.

Hilton hotels near the Port of Galveston

For a quick overnight before your cruise, the DoubleTree is a good choice (32,000 to 168,000 Hilton Honors points per night). It has a pool and free Wi-Fi and is across the street from the beach. It also offers parking package options.

For a more resort-style stay, consider the Hilton Galveston Island Resort (32,000 to 338,000 Hilton Honors points per night). It's within walking distance of the beach and offers parking and shuttle packages.

Marriott hotels near the Port of Galveston

For an affordable stay with beach access, check out the Courtyard Galveston Island (30,000 to 59,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night). You can dine at its on-site restaurant or venture out — either by foot or via the island's trolley — to sample the island's renowned seafood. Wi-Fi is free for Bonvoy members.

The Grand Galvez, part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, is the city's signature hotel. First opened in 1911 as the Hotel Galvez, it is the only historic beachfront hotel on the entire Texas coast. A stay here (from 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night) is a grand way to start a cruise vacation.

For a hotel even closer to the pier and the city's famed downtown strand, the Tremont House is a luxury option from the Tribute Portfolio (from 55,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night). Its Blum & Co. bistro and wine bar is open all day and well into the evening for those arriving from late flights into Houston. The hotel has park-and-sail packages as well as transportation to the terminal.

Hyatt hotels near the Port of Galveston

The nearest Hyatt is the Hyatt Regency Baytown, a Category 3 hotel (from 9,000 World of Hyatt points per night). It's an hour's drive from the port, situated not far from Space Center Houston and the Kemah Boardwalk, if those are on your to-do list pre- or post-cruise.

Related: Why the World of Hyatt card is one of the best credit cards

Non-points hotels near the Port of Galveston

A stay at Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa and Convention Center is a whopper of a family-friendly choice. Besides the aquarium, rainforest and discovery museum on-site, the property boasts a beachy water park and lazy river, and a paddlewheel boat offering dinner cruises. The hotel offers cruise parking and a cruise shuttle for a fee.

Leaving the kids behind? The San Luis Resort, Spa and Conference Center is family-friendly, but its lack of attractions for children (other than a pool) means fewer children will likely be on the property. That makes it ideal for a couples or singles escape. The resort has ocean-view rooms and suites, four restaurants and a luxury spa to kick off (or finish off) your cruise.

Restaurants near Galveston cruise port

The food scene in Galveston includes everything from baskets of fish and chips done Texas style (which means it's probably wrapped in bacon and served with jalapenos) to elegant chop houses and seafood establishments. Choices line Seawall Boulevard and extend to the Strand Historic District and the Pier 21 tourist area.

Seafood is the predominant option, but it's also possible to sample barbecue and Tex-Mex.

Things to do in and around Galveston before or after your cruise

carnival 8 day cruise galveston

The beach is the No. 1 reason people visit Galveston. It stretches for 32 miles (more than 10 miles protected by a seawall and promenade) and is dotted with fishing piers, overwater souvenir shops and the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier amusement park. The best part is that almost anything you need in Galveston is across the street from the beach, including most of the hotels and restaurants.

The bar scene along the seawall has plenty to offer, from rooftop outdoor seating at Pelican and the Shark at the 61st Street Fishing Pier to the famous Poop Deck facing the beach. The Strand has its own concentration of bars, from classy wine bars to genuine dive bars.

Beyond the beach, look for a Texas original water park — Schlitterbahn and Moody Gardens. Kids and adults both can delight in the three Moody Gardens pyramids. One's an aquarium featuring penguins, seals and a coral reef lab. Another is a rainforest, home to over 1,700 exotic plants and endangered animals, including free-roaming sloths and birds that fly between the trees as you walk the trails below the canopy. The third pyramid is a discovery museum with rotating exhibits. Expect animal encounters and hands-on "edutainment" at all three.

Shopping near the Port of Galveston

For last-minute cruise clothes, swing by the Tanger Outlets on I-45, approximately 20 miles north of Galveston in Texas City. As luck would have it, there's a Buc-ees right next door. Besides the clean bathrooms, you'll find Texas souvenirs, out-of-the-ordinary snacks, drinks and even decent barbecue packed into a supersize gas station and roadside palooza.

You won't have trouble finding Galveston's Walmart and Target if you're looking to purchase last-minute snacks, sundries, bottled water, soda or wine to carry on board ( where allowed ).

Hot spots for beachwear, hats, sunglasses and souvenirs specific to Galveston are Dolphin World and the Mermaid Pier.

They’re usually the first sea day and in this case would most likely be the second sea day, not the last.

10 million Carnival passengers have now sailed out of Galveston

I t only took almost 25 years, but 10 million Carnival passengers have now sailed out of Galveston. The milestone came last week, when Marsha Taulton of Houston (with husband Paul) boarded the Carnival Breeze and touched off an impromptu party with the crew and Galveston Wharves CEO Rodger Rees.

“I think they told us this was their 73rd cruise or something like that, so they’re frequent cruisers, no doubt,” Rees said. “As a matter of fact, they were leaving on the cruise when we saw ‘em, and they were going on a different cruise the next week out of Miami.”

Both the port and Carnival saluted the Taultons with goodie baskets, said Rees, who believes the couple also received an upgrade and comped drinks at the morning soiree. With 50 million people within a 12-hour drive, and 30 million within eight hours, he noted, the port of Galveston keeps Carnival well-supplied with passengers.

“They’ve really turned it up a notch here in Galveston,” Rees said. “It’s probably one of their better markets, and they’ll tell you that, as far as passenger spends go. These Texans will spend money on the cruise ships.”

In a statement, Carnival president Christine Duffy made it clear the feeling is mutual.

“This is an achievement that speaks to the success of our longstanding partnership with the port and the greater Galveston community,” she said. “We are grateful to our guests who have sailed with us from Galveston over the past two decades, continually driving the popularity of this homeport forward.”

“The future is certainly bright,” she continued, “as we’re delighted to welcome more guests aboard than ever before from this great city – next stop, 20 million!”

In announcing the Taultons’ good fortune last week, Carnival also revealed that its 2,124-capacity Miracle will relocate from San Francisco to Galveston in October. Along with the Breeze, Jubilee, Legend, and Dream, that brings the cruise line’s number of ships home-ported in Texas to five. Consequently, Carnival expects the number of passengers embarking from Galveston to increase by 20 percent over last year.

That means an additional 800,000-plus people passing through Galveston this year—never mind the five other cruise lines that also serve the port—but numbers like that are hardly surprising to Rees by now. Two years ago, Galveston saw its millionth cruise passenger in December; last year, the port reached that number in October. This year, Rees expects to clear a million around August.

“Right now we’re tracking 1.8 million passengers,” he said. “Already—these numbers would be through April—I believe we've had almost 700,000 passengers just through April alone, and that’s huge for us. I can remember when we might do that the whole year.”

Wasting no time, Carnival’s website is already advertising 14 different cruises aboard the Miracle, ranging in length from four days to 12. Besides such familiar Caribbean destinations as Cozumel, Montego Bay, and Grand Cayman, a few Miracle cruises will visit the Panama Canal zone, stopping over in Limon, Costa Rica; Colon, Panama; and Mahogany Bay, Honduras.

Now the fourth-largest passenger-cruise port in the U.S. (and the biggest outside Florida), Galveston was a different story in the 1970s . Things around the port were a little sleepy, and officials thought they might be able to capitalize on the popularity of the hit TV series The Love Boat . Not much came of the idea until Carnival set up shop on the island in 2000—even, Rees said, loaning the city $15 million to get a passenger terminal up to snuff.

That investment has now been repaid many times over.

“It’s been a great relationship,” Rees said. “When you have a lot of volume like they have, you can get a better deal, too. When they negotiate a deal for passenger fees and things like that, if you’ve got the kind of volume they have, we’ve got to negotiate with you. We’ve gotta give you a deal, so their costs go down lower the more passengers they bring in.”
