King’s Celebrates 75th Commencement with more than 430 Degrees Awarded to the Class of 2024

  • Will Skaggs
  • 17 May 2024

Wilkes-Barre, Pa.— Graduates of the King’s College Class of 2024 received their bachelor’s and master’s degrees before a crowd of more than 3,000 family, friends, and faculty during the 75th annual Commencement at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

Kearney receiving honorary degree from Fr. Looney

King’s alumnus Ed Kearney ’74, founder and chairman of Kearney & Company P.C.—one of the largest certified public accounting firms in the United States—delivered the commencement address.

“Since my wife and I are both natives of this area, we have a real appreciation of the strong character of this community, and the tough personality it creates,” said Kearney. “That’s not just words. Our company has hired about 70 King’s graduates because of all they had to offer.”

“Remember, the harder you work, the luckier you get,” Kearney continued. “The one thing in life you can control 100 percent is your effort. To get what you don’t have, you often have to do things that are out of your comfort zone. Invest in yourself. Never stop learning.”

In 2020, the Kearney family committed $1 million to fund two annual full-tuition scholarships for accounting majors at King’s College. The College’s accounting program has since been renamed the Kearney & Company Department of Accounting.

Class of 2024 president, Ryan Bisgard, of Denver, Colo., also delivered remarks. A member of the ice hockey program, Bisgard graduated with a degree in business administration. She is also vice president of Model U.N., an Honors Program advisory committee representative, and a member of the Pre-Law Society. She plans to attend law school and pursue a career in sports law.

Ryan Bisgard Speech

“Whatever journey you embark on, whether it is starting a new job, furthering your education, or just figuring things out, do it with passion and determination,” said Bisgard. “Good things might not always come to those who wait but they will come to those who deserve it and honor its timing.”

The event concluded with remarks from Rev. Thomas P. Looney, C.S.C., Ph.D., president of King’s College.

“Your diploma is testimony that you have been educated at an institution that promotes moral values, service to others, and the common good of humankind,” said Father Looney. “And that is no small thing for the world needs leaders and citizens with a moral compass, who are committed to serving others, and who promote justice that leads to peace for all. The world needs you.”

During today’s event, Kearney received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree along with Sister Mary Persico, president of Marywood University, and Thomas P. Leary, president of Luzerne County Community College (LCCC).

Student Audience

Leary is retiring after 50 years of service at LCCC, including 17 years as the institution’s longest-serving president. His tenure includes new LCCC centers throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania, a 71 percent increase in student scholarship funding, and the Restart Program, which offers former students a second chance to complete their degree while having their previous LCCC debt waived.

Additional remarks and prayers were offered by Thomas R. Smith ’77, chair of the board of King’s College and The Most Reverend Joseph C. Bambera, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of the Diocese of Scranton. Joseph Evan, Ph.D., ’95, provost and vice president for academic affairs, conferred the degrees.

Listed below are the degrees conferred and the individuals eligible to graduate at the time of this release.

NEHS Students Shine as Tour Guides for Incoming Kindergartners

Students in our National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) chapter at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Rio Rancho, NM, complete lots of service projects every year from campus cleanup to clothing and canned food drives. This school year, we undertook a more ambitious project: having our students serve as tour guides for our annual Kindergarten Roundup.

Each spring during the roundup, we invite prospective kindergartners and their families to visit our school. They meet the teachers, tour the building, and get lots of information. When we were planning this year’s event, our administrators suggested that it might be cool if we had students lead the tour, and specifically some of the 29 fourth and fifth graders who make up our NEHS chapter.

campus tour king's

The students we selected were very excited. Groups of three students led three tours of 50–60 kids and their families. Our students came up with what they thought were the most important stops on a tour (the playground and the art rooms) and what the group should hear about our school (the great staff). They also wrote their own scripts. Whoever wasn’t presenting at the time would stand back and answer questions from families. They were definitely prepared and did a great job.

Our students were nervous at first, but at the end of the tours, you could tell there was a big sense of accomplishment and pride in what they did and pride in our school. As educators, we loved seeing their positive reactions because that’s why we’re in this profession. The feedback we received from the administration and families was that it was the highlight of Kindergarten Roundup, and they loved hearing our students’ experiences at the school rather than listening to an adult.

Before the students led the tours, we put a lot of effort into building their confidence. We talked about how they know the school and would be great guides. And then we practiced as much as we could. Another big plus is that all the students in the chapter really showed their support. The guides were really nervous, but when we told them they would have other Honor Society students with them, that was huge in helping build their confidence.

We already know that our chapter members will be leading the tours again next school year. This should be a big selling point for being active in the chapter as well as a great way to help show the five pillars of NEHS: everyday scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. We’re just incredibly proud of our students, and they’re proud to be a part of our school. This is going to be a defining moment for them in their elementary school years.
