This tour is the ultimate African birding and wildlife adventure. Over three weeks of non-stop birding, we hope to see more than 700 bird species, plus an incredible diversity of wildlife, superb scenery, wonderful lodges and tented camps, and super-friendly Kenyans.

Our tour begins with an exploration of the lush Shimba Hills and Arabuko-Sokoke Forest. Here we will endeavour to find some of the rarest birds in Africa, including the diminutive Sokoke Scops Owl, Sokoke Pipit, Green-headed Oriole, Amani Sunbird and Clarke’s Weaver. We then travel through both Tsavo West and East Parks, offering excellent game viewing and a huge bird list. The isolated Taita Hills, with its critically endangered species, will no doubt be memorable, and we’ll search all elevations of the Aberdare’s and Mount Kenya’s slopes for avian gems such as Jackson’s Francolin, Bar-tailed Trogon, Eastern Bronze-naped Pigeon, localized Hinde’s Babbler and Abyssinian Ground Thrush. We then enter the true arid zone at Samburu-Shaba, where highlights should include Golden-breasted Starling, Vulturine Guineafowl, Williams’s Lark, Somali Bee-eater and Lichtenstein’s Sandgrouse. The dry woodlands of Lake Baringo are home to Jackson’s Hornbill, Northern Masked Weaver, and Somali Sparrow, while the famous Kakamega forest adds a plethora of forest specials with Blue-headed Bee-eater. Turner’s Eremomela, Chapin’s Flycatcher, Blue-shouldered Robin-Chat and Yellow-bellied Wattle-eye being notable targets. Our tour concludes after exploring the papyrus swamps and moist woodlands along Lake Victoria!

Our Mega tours are very fast-paced birding adventures designed for the dedicated lister and serious birder. The focus of the tour is to see as many of the endemics and area specials as possible in our given time. In order to cover the necessary route to maximise the species list we tend to spend a single night at most sites and travel large distances. There is very little down time aside from that spent driving from one site to the next. These tours are not suitable for dedicated or avid photographers; inexperienced or new birders; as well as anyone with serious mobility or health challenges.

When other tour vehicles were speeding away, we got to sit and really learn. Also our driver, Martin, was superb -- an excellent driver who navigated the rutted roads with great skill, but also proved himself to be an excellent spotter and birder. Greg and Martin made a wonderful team. The selection of game reserves that we visited on this trip was perfect, especially for me as a first-timer. I felt I got an excellent overview of the Kenyan countryside. Our accommodations were all comfortable, but some were better than others. I loved the Wildebeest Eco-Lodge in Nairobi -- a wonderful introduction to the country. Castle Forest felt magical, and even the annoyance of having only one plug per room did not dampen my enthusiasm. The Sopa Lodge at Sambura was comfortable and the staff were very accommodating; I just wish the doors and windows had been a bit tighter to keep out a startling array of large critters (crickets, spiders, and something very large with lots of legs), none of which appeared at any other location. The Lodge at Lake Nakuru was a treat and very unexpected. But I loved the low-key atmosphere of the Pride Inn at Masai Mara -- a lovely location, and again the staff were wonderful. I thought the food offered at the buffets in all our lodges was excellent overall. Thank you for a wonderful experience. I can't wait to go back.

I've never been on a safari trip so I had no way of knowing what was involved. Due to my age (83) and slight incapacity (I use a cane, aka "stick," to maintain balance) the trip was more challenging than I had anticipated. But Stuart Elsom, our guide, and Jack, our expert driver and expert birder, made accommodations that made it possible for me to undertake and get the most out of the experience. 342 life list birds! Comprehensive Premium Kenya Birding and Wildlife Safari September 2024/2025

This 25-day birding and wildlife holiday in Kenya is a more comprehensive tour of this staggeringly diverse country than any other birding tour of Kenya that we have been able to find. This trip is also more of a premium trip than most birding tours of this amazingly mammal- and bird-rich country; we use relatively spacious vehicles and comfortable accommodation compared to a number of other Kenya birdwatching holidays we’ve seen offered.

Kenya has a spectacularly diverse array of habitats packed into a small area. These range from humid tropical lowland forests with localized denizens such as Sokoke Scops Owl near the idyllic Indian Ocean coastline (which boasts Crab-plover ), to snow-capped mountains at over 16,000 feet (5,000 meters) above sea level! In between the sea and the high mountains are vast arid savannas and grasslands that are famous for their endless herds of wildlife, opportunistic predators such as Africa’s big cats, and a myriad of colorful bird species. Then there are the Great Rift Valley scarps and flamingo-filled lakes, highland grasslands, the Taita Hills, a staggeringly bird-diverse tropical rainforest in the form of Kakamega and last but not least the papyrus-lined Lake Victoria, the continent’s biggest lake.

Kenya is smaller than Texas , yet boasts an incredible 1,162 bird species. A relatively modest eleven of these species are single country endemics, but then Kenya also boasts a range of East African endemics such as a number of species only occurring in Kenya and Tanzania. The country has 62 Important Bird Areas (IBAs) and some of the most famous game parks in the world, including the Maasai Mara and its endless migrating wildebeest herds, Amboseli with Mount Kilimanjaro as a backdrop, and many others.

This comprehensive wildlife and birding vacation to Kenya should enable you to see around 600 bird species, enjoy excellent large game viewing and allow you to see some of Africa’s most famous sites. While we enjoy all the wildlife, we are sure to spend adequate time looking for the localized bird specials of Kenya (and East Africa as a whole), including Hinde’s Babbler , the Taita Hills endemics, Turner’s Eremomela , papyrus swamp endemics, some breathtakingly beautiful turacos, Grey-crested Helmetshrike , Abbott’s Starling , Sharpe’s Longclaw and a great variety of others.

Itinerary (25 days/24 nights)

Day 1. nairobi.

Upon arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi you will be met by our driver and tour leader and transferred to your hotel. If you arrive early, there might be time to visit the excellent Nairobi National Park . Here, Africa’s big game species (along with smaller animals such as Thomson’s Gazelle ) can be seen right on the outskirts of Kenya’s capital. It’s also a rhino sanctuary and an Important Bird Area (IBA). We hope to get our bird list off to a good start with species like Saddle-billed Stork , Yellow-throated Sandgrous e, Martial Eagl e (Africa’s largest eagle), Rüppell’s Vulture , Eastern Chanting Goshawk , Common Ostrich , Hartlaub’s Bustard and the East African endemic Red-throated Tit .

Near Nairobi is also the Kikuyu Escarpment at the foot of the Aberdare Mountains . Both are IBAs with important Afrotropical highland montane species including Abbott’s Starling , Black-fronted Bushshrike , Aberdare and Hunter’s Cisticolas , Kikuyu White-eye , Grey Cuckooshrike , Chestnut-throated Apalis , Grey Apalis , Mountain Greenbul and White-starred Robin , among many others.

Overnight: Nairobi

Day 2. Gatamaiyu Forest, Kikuyu Escarpment and the Kinangop Plateau Grasslands.

This morning we travel to Gatamaiyu Forest , part of the chain of forest fragments that form the Kikuyu Escarpment Forest about 37 miles (59 kilometers) north-west of Nairobi. This is a tropical montane forest at the foot of the Aberdare range. The forest covers close to 12,000 acres (4,720 hectares). Here, we will look for the Vulnerable (IUCN) Abbott’s Starling in the forest canopy, a denizen of a few Afromontane forests in East Africa. We will also look for other range-restricted species such as Jackson’s Spurfowl and Hunter’s Cisticola . With luck we may find Rufous-breasted Sparrowhawk and Africa’s heaviest and most powerful (but not biggest) eagle, Crowned Eagle . Other species we hope to get acquainted with here are African Hill Babbler , White-starred Robin , Silvery-cheeked Hornbill , Tambourine Dove , Mountain Greenbul , the gorgeous and personality-filled Hartlaub’s Turaco , Slender-billed Greenbul and Kikuyu White-eye among many others. We plan to finish our birding here in the late morning before rewarding ourselves with a picnic lunch.

After lunch, we proceed to the Kinangop Plateau grasslands (another IBA) still on the slopes of the Aberdare Range. A major target here is Kenya’s well-known grassland endemic, the Endangered (IUCN) Sharpe’s Longclaw . Many more common and widespread African birds should also be seen here including Black-winged Lapwing , Wing-snapping Cisticola , Long-tailed and Jackson’s Widowbirds , and Nyanza Swift .

Day 3. Naivasha to Maasai Mara National Reserve

This morning, we’ll depart for the famed Maasai Mara National Reserve, contiguous with the Serengeti just across the border in Tanzania. The drive will already present some special rewards, like a sudden surprising, stunning outlook from a viewpoint at the top of the escarpment over the width of the Great Rift Valley , with Rock Hyraxes also enjoying the view. All kinds of spectacular birds along with large (and small!) game animals abound, including Grey Crowned Crane , Secretarybird , Common Wildebeest , Thomson’s Gazelle , Plains Zebra , Impala , Black-backed Jackal , Common Duiker , Vervet Monkey , and even (Maasai) Giraffe – roaming freely in the fields and using the roads together with the traffic, long before we even enter any game reserve.

We’ll arrive in time for lunch and take an afternoon game drive for some of the big game animals and local birds like Kori Bustard (the world’s heaviest flying bird), several of the seven species of vultures here including Egyptian , Hooded , Rüppell’s , Lappet-faced , and White-headed , Secretarybird , Coqui Francolin , Von der Decken’s Hornbill , Hildebrandt’s Starling and Silverbird .

Day 4. Maasai Mara National Reserve

We will have a full day of birding in the park with a picnic lunch. We’ll visit the Mara River , hoping to see part of the great wildebeest migration crossing the river, but this can of course not be guaranteed (the timing varies from year to year). We’ll also look out for the “big five”: African Elephant , Lion , Leopard , r hinoceros , and African Buffalo . We should also see Hippopotamus and plains game like Thomson’s Gazelle , Topi , (Maasai) Giraffe , and Black-backed Jackal .

Birds we expect to see here include Red-necked Spurfowl , White-bellied and Black-bellied Bustards , a number of vulture species, plus many other raptors like the beautiful Long-crested Eagle , the gigantic Martial Eagle , Tawny Eagle , Wahlberg’s Eagle , Black-chested Snake Eagle , the colorful Bateleur (one of the most beautiful eagles!), Shikra , and African Goshawk . In the more open areas, we can expect to encounter several species of colorful Bee-eaters , such as Cinnamon-chested , Little and White-throated , Kingfishers such as Grey-headed and African Pygmy and Rollers such as Purple and Lilac-breasted . The grasslands and woodlands also hold species such as Coqui and Red-winged Francolins , Pygmy Falcon , Southern Ground Hornbill , Fischer’s Sparrow-Lark , Foxy Lark , Trilling Cisticola , and many others.

Day 5. Maasai Mara National Reserve

We can have a pre-breakfast cup of coffee and tea before our early morning game drive, after which we will return to our lodge for a proper sit-down breakfast. It is our last day in Mara, so we will carry a picnic lunch and stay out the rest of the day looking for different wildlife (as mentioned above). We also hope to enjoy large herds of wildebeest (it will be the start of the migration season) and will look out for possible wildebeest river crossing sites.

Day 6. Maasai Mara to Lake Naivasha

After breakfast, we depart for Lake Naivasha , arriving in time for lunch. Lake Naivasha is a birdwatcher’s paradise with over 200 species having been recorded from the area. Our afternoon birding may yield Tropical Boubou , Orange-breasted Bushshrike , White-headed Barbet , Variable Sunbird , the dazzling Purple Grenadier , White-browed Robin-Chat with its beautiful song, the arid country specialist Buff-bellied Warbler , and Red-faced Crombec . Along the edge of the lake, we hope to find  Yellow-billed Stork , Long-toed and Spur-winged Lapwings , Malachite Kingfisher , and Pink-backed Pelicans .

Day 7. Lake Naivasha, Crescent Island Game Park

We will wake up early and do some pre-breakfast birding. After breakfast we’ll head for Crescent Island, a private wildlife game sanctuary on the eastern side of Lake Naivasha. It was created in 1988, and following a sudden drop in water levels in 2000, Crescent Island became part of the mainland and is now a peninsula. Big game animals, including Plains Zebra , Thomson’s Gazelle , Impala , and (Maasai) Giraffe , can all usually be seen up-close. Other wildlife includes (Defassa) Waterbuck , Common Eland and Common Wildebeest .

Up to 80 waterbird species have been recorded during censuses, including White-backed Duck , Saddle-billed Stork , Marabou Stork , African Spoonbill , Great Crested Grebe , the ubiquitous but attractive African Jacana , and various striking lapwing species such as Long-toed and Spur-winged Lapwings .

We also hope to find the localized, Near Threatened (IUCN) Grey-crested Helmetshrike , the personality-filled Grey-capped Warbler , White-bellied Tit and a wide variety of more widespread terrestrial birds such as Black-headed Oriole , Red-chested Cuckoo , Pearl-spotted Owlet , Grey-backed and Northern Fiscals , along with many others (in Kenya, there are birds everywhere, and just so many different species!).

Day 8.  Lake Naivasha to Lake Bogoria National Reserve

After an early breakfast, we will check out and depart towards the wonderful Lake Bogoria National Reserve , planning to arrive at Lake Bogoria Spa Lodge in time for lunch. After lunch, we will drive to the Lake Bogoria National Reserve. Unlike Lake Nakuru, whose salinity level has been affected by an increased water volume, Bogoria’s water salinity has not been affected. Hence, the lake has retained the spirulina (blue-green algae) which is the food of Lesser Flamingo and we hope to see large numbers here (they have vanished from Lake Nakuru because of rising water levels). We might also see Greater Flamingo , Black-necked Grebe , Steppe Eagle , Tawny Eagle , African Fish Eagle and as usual a host of other interesting species in the nearby woodlands such as Pygmy Batis , Slate-colored Boubou , Nubian Woodpecker and Red-fronted Barbet .

Overnight: Lake Bogoria Spa (we’ve had to tweak our itinerary in recent years because of flooding of the rift valley lakes and two hotels being submerged!).

Day 9. Lake Baringo National Reserve: cliff specialists, boat ride and more

After breakfast we head to Lake Baringo early in the morning. We arrive and meet our coxswain ready to take us birding by motor boat. Unlike Lake Bogoria, just a few miles away, Lake Baringo is a freshwater lake which means a different mix of waterbirds. Some of the birds we expect to see here include Goliath Heron , Hamerkop , Senegal Thick-knee , Gull-billed Tern , Grey-headed Kingfisher , dazzling Northern Carmine Bee-eater , and Golden-backed Weaver , among others.

After a two-hour boat ride, we have an hour or so to search for terrestrial beauties here like Eastern Violet-backed Sunbird , Spotted Palm Thrush and Abyssinian Roller among others, before we break for lunch. In the late afternoon we resume birding, now along the cliffs, looking for Hemprich’s Hornbill , Bristle-crowned Starling , Verreaux’s Eagle , and Rock Hyrax , the eagle’s main prey. With the help of a local naturalist, we’ll walk along the famous Tugen Hills, known for their great diversity of raptors and owls, as well as interesting passerines. Here we hope to find Three-banded Courser , Slender-tailed Nightjar , Greyish Eagle-Owl , Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl , Pearl-spotted Owlet , Lichtenstein’s Sandgrouse , White-bellied Canary , Brown-tailed Rock Chat , Jackson’s Hornbill , Speckle-fronted Weaver , White-billed and White-headed Buffalo Weavers , Dark Chanting Goshawk , African Grey and Nubian Woodpeckers , Red-and-yellow and D’Arnaud’s Barbets , and Purple Roller , and many others.

Day 10. Lake Baringo to Kakamega Forest National Reserve

We’ll do a pre-breakfast bird walk, and after we’ve eaten, we’ll drive to the Kakamega Forest National Reserve . This drive takes us through the beautiful scenery of the Kerio Valley. We will stop in the valley for a picnic lunch and do some birding, looking for White-crested Turaco , Beautiful Sunbird , Orange-breasted and Grey-headed Bushshrikes , and White-crested Helmetshrike , among others.

Kakamega Forest is Kenya’s only true tropical rainforest, similar to the central and west African forests, and this area is alive with birds, some of which are found nowhere else in the country. We will also have a full day tomorrow to explore this bird-rich area.

Day 11. Kakamega Forest National Reserve

We will spend the day enjoying the sights and sounds of this unique forest. We’ll walk the numerous forest trails here in search of many of Kakamega’s 194 bird species. The forest is West African in character, and many birds’ Kenyan distributions are confined to this forest, here at the eastern extent of their range only marginally making it into this country. The rainforest is also a haven for butterflies and other insects, along with its vast avian riches.

In this tropical greenhouse we’ll get a chance to see Great Blue Turaco , Blue-headed Bee-eater , Brown-eared Woodpecker , Yellow-crested Woodpecker , Buff-spotted Woodpecker , Joyful Greenbul , Shelley’s Greenbul , Red-tailed Bristlebill , Cabanis’s Greenbul , Slender-billed Greenbul , the gem-like African Emerald Cuckoo , and the cacophonous Black-and-white-casqued Hornbill . The forest is well-known for scarce/localized forest barbets including the stunning Yellow-billed Barbet . The forest has a Near-Threatened (IUCN) high canopy warbler species, Turner’s Eremomela , which we will scan for in canopy bird parties. The area also has a small population of the Endangered (IUCN) Grey Parrot , a species which, with some luck, we can find here (although it is much easier on our West African tours, such as to Ghana ).

Kakamega Forest also supports good populations of three species of wattle-eyes including Yellow-bellied , Jameson’s and Chestnut Wattle-eye . The shy White-spotted Flufftail is sometimes seen along streams near Rondo Lodge. The forest here is dense and pristine with tall tree canopies, where species like Western Oriole , Red-headed Malimbe , Stuhlmann’s Starling , Sharpe’s Drongo and many others can be searched for.

A range of primate species such as Blue and Red-tailed Monkeys , beautiful Guereza (Black-and-white Colobus), as well as De Brazza’s Monkey , can also be seen in this forest. Forty percent of the total butterfly population of Kenya is found in Kakamega Forest as well. We’ll also get a chance to experience more of the diverse African culture of the Luhya people .

Day 12 Birding on the shores of Lake Victoria

We will start the day with an early breakfast and then have a one-hour transfer south to the shores of Lake Victoria . This is Africa’s largest freshwater body and in fact the second-largest freshwater lake in the world. The lake borders three East African countries, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, most of it being in Tanzania (49%) and Uganda (45%), with Kenya having the smallest portion (6%). It is the source of the mighty Nile River flowing north to Egypt. The reed beds around the lake provide unique habitat for a few papyrus specials including Papyrus Gonolek , Papyrus Canary and Carruthers’s Cisticola . Also present here are many strikingly-colored weavers such as Black-headed Weaver , Northern Brown-throated Weaver and Slender-billed Weaver . We aim to arrive here around 8 am and will then team up with our local guide and coxswain for a boat ride on the lake looking for the abovementioned species. After a few hours on the lake, we will enjoy coffee and a cup of tea and then head back to Rondo Retreat for lunch. We will then enjoy our last birding around the forest in the late afternoon.

Day 13. Kakamega Forest National Reserve to Lake Nakuru National Park

We’ll depart, after breakfast, for Lake Nakuru National Park , allowing time to search for several key species along the way. In the early afternoon we’ll arrive at Lake Nakuru National Park, where in previous years, vast numbers of Lesser Flamingos used to feed in the shallow alkaline water, now replaced with smaller numbers of Greater Flamingos because of a change in the lake’s salinity. Lake Nakuru National Park was recently named an IBA by BirdLife International due to the huge bird populations/diversity in this magnificent park. A large rocky escarpment en route is a favorite roosting spot for Mackinder’s Eagle-Owl, the northern subspecies (sometimes split into its own species) of Cape Eagle-Owl . The Acacia scrub is a favorite haunt for Little Rock Thrush , Mocking Cliff Chat , Pale Flycatcher and Purple Grenadier . Exploring the Acacia woodland and lakeside marshes we will no doubt come across many other wonderful avian delights in addition, such as Great White Pelican , African Harrier-Hawk , Hildebrandt’s Spurfowl , Levaillant’s Cuckoo , White-browed Coucal , Green Wood Hoopoe , Red-throated Wryneck , African Grey Woodpecker , Anteater Chat , Grey-backed Fiscal , Brown-crowned Tchagra , Fischer’s Lovebird and African Firefinch .

Mammals are also quite common in the park, and this is one of the few places in East Africa where both the endangered White and Black Rhinoceroses can be found. Some of the other mammals we hope to encounter are (Rothschild’s) Giraffe and Bohor Reedbuck .

Day 14. Lake Nakuru National Park to Olpajeta Wildlife Conservancy

We’ll depart, after breakfast, for Olpajeta Wildlife Conservancy , allowing time to search for several key species along the way. We will also have a stopover at Thomson’s Falls at Nyahururu which is one of Kenya’s highest towns, at 7,700 feet (2,360 meters) above sea level. Just outside the town lies Thomson’s Falls on the Ewaso Narok River. It falls an impressive 230 feet (72 meters), with the mist feeding the dense forest below. At Thomson’s Falls we’re likely to see  Chestnut-winged and  Slender-billed Starlings , Rock Martin , Grey Cuckooshrike , Kikuyu White-eye , and Tacazze and Collared Sunbirds . We will have our lunch here before proceeding to Olplajeta, however we will have a stop en route at Wajee Camp to look for the Vulnerable (IUCN) Kenyan endemic Hinde’s Babbler as well as Holub’s Golden Weaver .

In the afternoon we will arrive at Olpajeta Wildlife Conservancy and head straight to the lodge. Later in the afternoon we will enjoy yet another fantastic game drive looking for both Black and White Rhino , while other wildlife here includes African Elephant ,  African Buffalo ,  Grevy’s Zebra , Bushbuck , and  Common Warthog . We may take a walk in the nearby forest, where we’ll look for  African Dusky Flycatcher ,  Cabanis’s Greenbul , Abyssinian Thrush and others.

Day 15. Olpajeta Wildlife Conservancy

On our second day here, we will have an early-morning game drive (before breakfast), looking for both Red-billed and Yellow-billed Oxpeckers , Fischer’s Sparrow-Lark , Northern White-crowned Shrike , Meyer’s Parrot and Augur Buzzard and lots more. After breakfast we can visit the Chimpanzee Sanctuary and learn more about this fascinating primate, whose population in the wild is heavily affected by poaching and illegal trafficking. We will then have lunch at our lodge and enjoy an early-afternoon rest before our late-afternoon game drive.

Day 16 Olpajeta Wildlife Conservancy to Samburu National Reserve

In the morning we will take a bird walk around the lodge grounds and then after another tasty breakfast we will depart for Samburu National Reserve. This is one of our longer drives (roughly four hours), however we will take birding stops along the way which will give us the opportunity to stretch our legs and enjoy more of Kenya’s magnificent birdlife. In particular we will keep our eyes open here for spectacular Long-tailed and Red-collared Widowbirds along the roadside.

Samburu is an arid reserve, presenting us with some new species as described for the next day. Our hosts here are the Samburu people , who are pastoralists, herding their cattle like their cousins in the south, the Maasai . We will search for game animals as we make our way to our lodge and will have a chance for an evening game drive in search of the many birds and animals that inhabit this impressive park.

Day 17. Samburu National Reserve

Samburu is one of the most exciting reserves in Kenya, perhaps even in greater East Africa, with the semi-desert habitat and rich woodlands along the Ewaso Ng’iro River teeming with wildlife. Exploring  this fantastic reserve will  always produce a most overwhelming array of bird species, such as Somali Ostrich , African Hawk-Eagle , Crested Francolin , Yellow-necked Spurfowl , impressive Vulturine Guineafowl , Kori, Buff-crested and White-bellied Bustards , Black-faced and Lichtenstein’s Sandgrouse , Red-bellied Parrot , Somali Bee-eater , Von der Decken’s Hornbill , stunning Red-and-yellow Barbet , Pink-breasted Lark , truly beautiful Rosy-patched Bushshrike , Hunter’s and Black-bellied Sunbirds , Golden-breasted and Fischer’s Starlings , Donaldson Smith’s Sparrow-Weaver , and Cut-throat Finch . Also found here is the cute White-headed Mousebird , to complete the set of all three Kenyan mousebird species (mousebirds are a charismatic, uniquely African family of wonderfully long-tailed, crested birds), among many other Maasai-Somali biome species.

Mammal life here is also prolific, with many species not seen elsewhere on our tour. Just a few of the many possibilities include Olive Baboon , Dwarf Mongoose , Grevy’s Zebra , Giraffe (Maasai and Reticulated subspecies), Kirk’s and Guenther’s Dik-dik , (Coke’s) Hartebeest , Waterbuck , Gerenuk , Grant’s and Thomson’s Gazelle and the splendid Beisa Oryx .

Day 18. Samburu National Reserve to Nairobi

We leave Samburu soon after breakfast and drive southwards towards Nairobi. Birding along the way, we proceed past the semi-arid Northern Frontier District into the Mount Kenya region. En route we will pass through spectacular scenery, with the grasslands along the roadside a great place for Black-winged Lapwing , Black-winged Kite , Dusky Turtle Dove , Cape Crow , Long-tailed Widowbird , and Speke’s Weaver .

After crossing the equator, we enter the Central Kenya Highlands between the Aberdare Range and Mount Kenya . On a clear day we may get glimpses of the snow-capped peaks of the second-highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kenya. Making our way farther south out of the Central Kenya Highlands, we’ll see the pineapple plantations of Thika and many Kikuyu subsistence farms before arriving once more in Nairobi.

Day 19. Nairobi to Tsavo West National Park via Amboseli and Kilimanjaro

This is a long driving day with an early start, but it will reward us with some of Africa’s most famous scenery and a set of new birds. After breakfast we’ll proceed to Amboseli National Park right near the Tanzania border. Here, Mount Kilimanjaro is a backdrop to amazing scenes of big game and plentiful birds!

Tsavo West National Park is next on our agenda. The Tsavo habitat is a relatively dense thicket of savanna dominated by Acacia and Camiphora bush with baobabs, grassy plains, riverine woodland, and the Mzima Springs . We’ll ensure we arrive in time for lunch. In the afternoon we will take a game drive in the park, which supports a large number of big game species such as African Elephant , rhino , Lion , huge herds of African Buffalo , and more. Here, Mount Kilimanjaro is a backdrop to the amazing scenes of big game and plentiful birds. There will be a large number of new species for us here, including Splendid and Hildebrandt’s Starlings , Common Ostrich , Hartlaub’s Bustard , Black and Abyssinian Scimitarbills , African Grey and Northern Red-billed Hornbills , while night birds include Donaldson Smith’s and Freckled Nightjars , Pearl-spotted Owlet , and African Wood Owl .

Day 20. Tsavo West National Park

After breakfast we tour the Mzima Springs which are part of the Chyulu Range and are composed of porous volcanic lava rock and ashes, which purifies the water to produce the spring’s sparklingly clear water. We shall drive along lava rocks and explore the spring on foot enjoying views of Nile Crocodile and Hippopotamus and birds such as Holub’s Golden Weaver , Red-headed Weaver , Black-necked Weaver , Shikra , Little Sparrowhawk , Eastern Black-headed Batis , African Golden Oriole , Straw-tailed Whydah , and many others.

Other wildlife to experience here includes Blue Monkey , Yellow Baboon , African Elephant and Klipspringer . We will head back to our lodge for lunch and later in the afternoon we will enjoy a game drive to the rhino sanctuary.

Day 21. Tsavo West National Park to Taita Hills

After breakfast we will drive through Tsavo National Park to Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary . This is a private conservancy on the slopes of the Taita Hills. The forest shares botanical similarities with the Usambara Mountains in Tanzania to the south. We will arrive in time for lunch and have an afternoon drive exploring the riverine and savanna thickets and open plains in the conservancy for different species of both birds and mammals. We will look for Black-throated Barbet , Pangani Longclaw , Spotted Palm Thrush , Eastern Violet-backed Sunbird , Red-fronted Prinia and Grey Wren-Warbler , among others.

Overnight: Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary

Day 22.  Taita Hills Forest

We have an early breakfast before dawn and ascend to the Taita Hills forests, birding in the conservancy en route. The drive will take us about two hours to the top of Ngangao Forest, one of the major forest fragments. We will then meet our local guide and explore the forest. One of our major targets will be Taita Thrush which is found on the forest floor and can be a rather shy species; we will thus need to ensure we keep noise to a minimum! We hope to see the other two Taita endemics ( Taita Apalis and Taita White-eye) among the many other highland forest species. Other goodies here include Striped Pipit , Yellow-throated Woodland Warbler , Stripe-cheeked Greenbul , White-starred Robin, Hartlaub’s Turaco and many more. After our forest walk, we will have a picnic lunch and head back to the wildlife sanctuary for an afternoon game drive.

Day 23. Taita Hills to Watamu (Mida Creek)

After an early morning breakfast, we will head further south towards the Indian Ocean coast to the beach resort of Watamu (meaning “sweet”). On our way we will stop at Mida Creek for a picnic and then proceed for shore birding along the creek. Mida Creek, part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is a large inlet that opens into the sea south of Watamu and rises and falls with the tides. Mida Creek contains one of Africa’s largest mangroves and a very important part of the marine ecosystem in the Watamu/Sokoke World Biosphere Zone. The mangrove roots provide a rich source of food for fish, crabs, shrimp, and oysters. The fish and crustaceans then provide the food for Mida’s legions of birds. Thousands of migratory birds regularly visit here, with Crab-plover being its star attraction. We walk on the boardwalk to Mida Village through the mangrove habitat, looking for birds like Dimorphic Egret , Gull-billed and Saunders’s Terns , Greater Sand Plover , and Water Thick-knee , and if we’re lucky we may find Crab-plover .

We can spend the afternoon relaxing in the cool tidal breeze on the snow-white sandy beaches after an adventurous and bird-filled journey.

Day 24. Arabuko-Sokoke National Reserve

However, the adventure is not over just yet, as today we’ll take a short drive to the unique Arabuko-Sokoke Forest , where we’ll spend our time walking trails around the forest. It is one of the last remnant indigenous coastal forests in Kenya, and is by far the largest remnant of the forests that once dominated Kenya’s coastal fringe. The forest contains at least three distinct vegetation types, which provide habitat for several threatened species, and it has a very high number of species in relation to its size. Twenty percent of Kenya’s bird species and about thirty percent of its butterflies have been recorded in this small part (0.07%) of Kenya. At least 24 bird, mammal, and butterfly species are restricted to this stretch of coast. This high proportion of endemic species, some known only from Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, makes the forest a key part of the East African Coastal Forests Endemic Bird Area.

The forest holds some rare endemic species like Sokoke Scops Owl , Sokoke Pipit and Clarke’s Weaver , as well as other key species like Amani Sunbird , Fischer’s Turaco , Crested Guineafowl , Spotted Ground Thrush , Chestnut-fronted and Retz’s Helmetshrikes , Scaly-throated Honeyguide , Eastern Nicator , Mombasa Woodpecker , Mangrove Kingfisher , Blue-mantled Crested Flycatcher , Green Barbet and Black-bellied Starling .

Day 25. Departure

Kenya: Birds and Other Wildlife, Custom Trip Report

09 – 29 september 2019.

Kenya is one of the most biodiversity rich countries in the world. It has varied ecosystems that support some important, unique, endemic, and endangered flora and fauna. These ecosystems include the saline and freshwater lakes in the Rift Valley, the freshwater Lake Victoria in the west, the marine, coastal ecosystem in the southwest, tropical rainforest in the west, highland montane forests in the central highlands, the massive Mau Forest, which is the largest indigenous montane forest complex in East Africa in the southwest, and coastal dry forests and the vast savannas in the east. Our trip started in Nairobi and covered most of these great ecosystems, offering the chance to experience different wildlife communities as well as the human communities that live alongside.

Nairobi and its neighboring counties have a lot to offer the tourist, especially in terms of birding. Birders visiting the city for meetings and conferences and symposiums have enough to see in if they have some free times on their schedules. The Nairobi National Park, for example, is just seven kilometers away from the city center. A day trip can even take you to Lake Naivasha, some 57 kms away, or to Lake Nakuru National Park.

It’s worth noting that this year the Eurasian migratory species arrived very late, probably even not before late in October. By the end of September, at the end of our tour, we had encountered very few migratory species. On this trip most of the birds were photographed. A total of 475 species were seen, with 88 percent of them photographed. It was a great trip for mammals too, yielding 42 mammal species, some of them including multiple subspecies.

Detailed Report

Day 1, 9 september 2019. karen.

Our birding started in Nairobi with a Marabou Stork near the Nairobi Serena Hotel. In the midmorning we made a birding trip to Karen, southwest of Nairobi on the edges of the Ngong Forest Sanctuary. These are private areas that still hold some pockets of pristine montane forest. We found a good collection of both forest specialists and forest generalists. They included Hartlaub’s Turaco , Heuglin’s White-eye , Black-throated Wattle-eye , Chinspot Batis , White-headed Barbet , Spot-flanked Barbet , Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird , Yellow-breasted Apalis , Collared Sunbird , Variable Sunbird , Tropical Boubou , both Cabanis’s and Yellow-whiskered Greenbuls, and White-eyed Slaty Flycatcher . Most of the species seen were photographed.

Day 2, 10 September 2019. Gatamaiyu Forest

Today we traveled to Gatamaiyu Forest on the slopes of the Aberdare Range (part of the Kenya Central Highlands), some 80 kilometers (50 feet) from Nairobi. We found a variety of highland forest birds, including Mountain Greenbul , Grey Apalis , Chestnut-throated Apalis , and Hartlaub’s Turaco , among many others. On our way back to Nairobi in some tea plantations we came across a few farmland birds, including African Stonechat , Hunter’s Cisticola , and many weavers among other birds. We returned to Nairobi Serena Hotel for dinner and an overnight.

Day 3, 11 September 2019. Nairobi to Maasai Mara National Reserve

After breakfast we headed to our first safari destination, the famous Masai Mara. It’s a long day of driving. We arrived at the Mara Simba Lodge six hours later at lunch time. After checking in we had lunch and rested till 15:30 p.m., when we left for our afternoon game drive. There were so many birds in the bushes along the way between the main gate and the reception, a distance of less than 500 meters (1640 feet). As soon as we were out of the gate there was a lot of mammals to see. including African Elephants , a pride of Lions , and a Cheetah ; a male Cheetah was very active along the tour buses. We also came across birds such as Red-fronted Tinkerbird , Brown Parrot , Silverbird , White-bellied Bustard , Lilac-breasted Roller , Rüppell’s Starling , Hildebrandt’s Starling , Tawny Eagle . and Augur Buzzard , to name just a few.  We were back at Mara Simba Lodge for dinner and the night.

Day 4, 12 September 2019. Maasai Mara

Our second day in the Maasai Mara was a full day of both mammals and birds. It provided a number of surprises, including a Cheetah with three cubs in the field. Patience really paid us big dividends here, because, as other safari vehicles were rushing to get a glimpse of them when they were barely visible behind a croton thicket and then drove away, we stayed put and saw the Cheetahs very well when they came out and were lining up, although some distance away, but good for photos. At a much closer distance along the river bank we saw a group of Common Wildebeests coming to drink. Then out of nowhere came a single Lioness and attacked and killed one of the wildebeests as we watched. Although everything was so exciting that we really wanted to stay long and watch, we had to head back for lunch. In the afternoon we had a guided walk along the Mara River, where there were lots of Hippopotamuses and a few birds, including Common Sandpiper and Egyptian Goose .

Day 5, 13 September 2019. Maasai Mara to Lake Naivasha

The following morning after breakfast we had our final game drive on our way out of the Maasai Mara, heading for Lake Naivasha.

We arrived at Elsamere Lodge at lunchtime and had lunch after checking into our rooms. This property  used to be the home of Joy and George Adamson  of Born Free fame. They had a passion for the conservation in particular of wild cats, including lions and leopards. After lunch we spent the afternoon until the late evening exploring the hotel grounds and the beautiful yellow-barked acacia woodland for terrestrial birds.  Our finds included Hamerkop , African Fish Eagle , Green Wood Hoopoe , African Grey Woodpecker , White-bellied Tit , and African Thrush . Then we had dinner at the lodge and a good night’s sleep.

Day 6, 14 September 2019. Lake Naivasha

In the morning we had a bird walk on the ground of the lodge before breakfast. This was a morning for boat rides and later a walk on Crescent Island on Lake Naivasha watching birds and many mammals including Plains Zebra , Giraffe , Common Wildebeest , and Impala . It was a suny and hot day, but walking in the shade of the yellow-barked acacias provided relief. We returned to the lodge by boat with fishing African Fish Eagles . Back at the lodge a few Eastern Black-and-white Colobuses showed on a tree right in front of the dining room. Unlike baboons and vervet monkeys, these primates will not distub people having meals. After luch we drove farther south to Lake Oloiden to find more birds. Here we spotted the rare Grey-crested Helmetshrike passing toward its roosting site, another wonderful experience.

As we drove back to the lodge a number of beautiful Masai Giraffes , the largest giraffe subspecies, wandered from their feeding sites toward their roosting site, crossing the main highway that leads to the lodge. A great moment with giraffes up-close as the sun was setting!  We had one more restful night at Elsamere.

Day 7, 15 September 2019. Elsamere to Lake Bogoria National Reserve

Early in the morning after breakfast we drove northwest along the Great Rift Valley to Lake Bogoria National Reserve. This is a saline lake in dry savanna ecosystem. We arrive at Lake Bogoria Spa Resort in time for lunch. After luch we drove into the reserve and spent the better part of the afternoon and evening with flamingos.This is the best place in Kenya to encounter the largest population of Lesser Flamingos in the country, with a few Greater Flamingos among them. Close to 300,000 Lesser Flamingos forage here because it is now the only lake with the right water chemistry to produce the correct species of blue green alge (cyanobacteria), the main food source of this species. Today there were about 50 Greater Flamingos in the flocks of thousands of Lesser Flamingos . What a fabulous spectacle!

Day 8, 16 September 2019. Lake Bogoria to Lake Baringo

In the morning we headed back to the lake for photographing flamingo in  the great morning light at Lake Bogoria National Reserve. There was a very beatiful pink glow in the simmering rays of the sunrise. We spent two hours here before breakfast. After breakfast we drove to Lake Baringo, the northernmost Rift Valley Lake in Kenya. This is a paradise for both waterbirds and terrestrial species, both resident and migratory. We took a morning boat tour, looking for birds until lunchtime. It would have been wasting time to drive back to our accommodation for lunch, so we decided to have a hot lunch at  the nearby Soi Safari Lodge and afterwards continue birding. Our local guide did a tremendous job right from the boat tour to bush-and-woodland birding and finally to the famous Tugen Hills cliffs. This was the best  birding day of the trip, with four species of owls ( African Scops Owl , Spotted Eagle-Owl , Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl , and Pearl-spotted Owlet ), weavers ( White-headed and White-billed Buffalo Weavers , White-browed Sparrow-Weaver , Baglafecht Weaver , Lesser Masked Weaver , Northern Masked Weaver , and Little Weaver ), Purple Roller , Blue-cheeked and Northern Carmine Bee-eaters , Woodland and Malachite Kingfishers , African Darter , Reed Cormorant , and a full slate of herons and egrets including Goliath Heron , among many others.

Day 9, 17 Setember 2019. Lake Baringo to Kakamega Forest

After breakfast we drove through the Kerio Valley with a brief stop at Cheploch Gorge, where we searched for and found White-crested Turaco . Other birds we saw here were Black-winged Red Bishop , Southern Black Flycatcher , Black-headed Oriole , and Black-headed Gonolek among other common species. We then continued our drive to Kakamega Forest and arrived in the late afternoon. After meeting the local guide we enjoyed some evening birding and then had dinner at the Rondo Retreat Centre, where we stayed overnight.

Day 10, 18 September 2019. Kakamega Forest

Early in the morning we birded on the grounds of the Rondo Retreat Centre and along a number of nature trails along a nearby river.

After breakfast we drove to Ikuywa River and had a fabulous, neck-breaking birding session along the forest trail. There were birds everywhere. We enjoyed rainforest birds like Dark-backed Weaver , Ross’s Turaco , White-headed Wood Hoopoe , Snowy-crowned Robin-Chat , Yellow-billed , Yellow-spotted , and Grey-throated Barbets , Pale-breasted Illadopsis , Lühder’s Bushshrike , Mackinnon’s Shrike , and the rare Turner’s Eremomela among others, before we went back to the lodge for lunch.  In the evening we took another forest walk on the Pump House Trail and along the local tea plantations. We were delighted to encounter some different species like Red-tailed Bristlebill , African Blue Flycatcher , Slender-billed Greenbul , Joyful Greenbul , Chubb’s Cisticola , Black Sparrowhawk , Brown-chested Alethe , Northern Yellow White-eye , Equatorial Akalat , and White-tailed Ant Thrush , among others.

Day 11, 19 September 2019. Kakamega Forest to Lake Nakuru

Early in the morning we had our last birding session around the Rondo Retreat Centre before we loaded the vehicle and headed for Lake Nakuru.

When we arrived in Lake Nakuru National Park we went straight to Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge, checked into our rooms, and had lunch. After lunch we had some rest before proceeding on an afternoon game drive. The water chemistry of Lake Nakuru has really changed in recent years due to the water uprising and submerging parts of the terrestrial ecosystem. This has in turn affected the salinity levels, which impacted directly on the presence here of Lesser Flamingos, many of which have left the area and moved to Lake Baringo. Ground nesting birds like plovers have as well been affected.  We were fortunate enough, however, to view both the White and the Black Rhinoceros this afternoon before we headed for the lakeshore to see Greater Flamingos among other waders. We also saw other great birds, including Saddle-billed Stork , Grey Crowned Crane , Great Egret , Little-Egret , African Spoonbill , Cape Teal , Red-billed Teal , Hottentot Teal , and Whiskered Tern among other waders and terrestrial birds. Then we returned to Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge for dinner and an overnight.

Day 12, 20 September 2019, Lake Nakuru National Park to Mount Kenya

In the morning we had breakfast and later a morning game drive on our way out of Lake Nakuru National Park to Kenya’s Central Highlands and Mount Kenya. We arrived at the Serena Mountain Lodge on the slope of Mount Kenya early enough to have some rest before lunch. After lunch we took an afternoon walk in the forest, led by the area’s resident naturalist. The afternoon was a bit windy, but still we had great views of Mountain Oriole , Cabanis’s and Yellow-whiskered Greenbuls , Silvery-cheeked Hornbill , Hartlaub’s Turaco , and Heuglin’s White-eye among many others.

Day 13, 21 September 2019. Mount Kenya to Samburu National Park

The morning was somewhat cloudy, but slowly it got better with time. By 6:30 a.m. we were on the roof of the lodge, viewing the forest canopy and the mountain.  As the sun rose the mountain got clearer and the birds started feeding, chirping and singing in the canopy. From here we had some better views than we had had before of Black-throated Apalis and saw Eastern Bronze-napped Pigeon , African Green Pigeon , Dusky Turtle Dove , Yellow-crowned Canary , and Red-bellied Parrot among others. Then we went for breakfast and afterwards started to head north toward Samburu National Park as it got warmer and drier.

We arrived in Samburu around 11:00 a.m. and took a game drive along the Ewaso Ng’iro River before we head to the lodge for lunch. This river originates in the Mau Escarpment, flowing north and ending in the Lorian Swamp. It is the major source of life, together with the smaller Isiolo River, in this dry savanna ecosystem. Samburu is very dry through most of the year, but it has some unique wildlife found nowhere else in the country.  We arrived at the Samburu Simba Lodge in the Buffalo Springs part of Samburu for lunch and then had a rest during the hottest time of the day. In the afternoon we encountered some wonderful, amazing, and totally different wildlife, including Grevy’s Zebra , Reticulated Giraffe , Beisa Oryx , Somali Ostrich , Somali Fiscal , White-headed Mousebird , a flock of about 12 Scissor-tailed Kites , and many Steppe Eagles .

Day 14, 22 September 2019, Samburu National Park

In the morning we had a cup of tea and then a morning game drive before breakfast. After breakfast we spent the whole day in the field with a picnic lunch. The list of new wildlife became even longer with Pygmy Falcon , Donaldson-Smith’s Sparrow-Weaver , Vulturine Guineafowl , Palm-nut Vulture , Rosy-patched Bushshrike , and a nesting Martial Eagle with a juvenile. A Leopard resting in a tree and later coming down to quench its thirst in a small pool of water was very rewarding.

Day 15. 23 September 2019. Samburu National Park to Nairobi

In the morning we had breakfast, followed by a morning game drive before leaving Samburu National Park for Nairobi. It was a long driving day, but we were looking forward to the next phase of our tour in the southwestern and coastal regions of the country.  We drove back to the Nairobi Serena Hotel, our host in the city, for dinner and an overnight rest.

Day 16, 24 September 2019. Nairobi to Tsavo West National Park

After breakfast we headed south toward the south-western region of Kenya. Our goal was Tsavo West National Park (9,065 square kilometers/3500 square miles). Together Tsavo West and Tsavo East National Parks are the largest protected area managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service. They two parks are separated by the A109 road Nairobi-Mombasa and a railway line. Tsavo East is lower in elevation than Tsavo West, which is characterized by scenic volcanic hills and volcanic ash and rocks. It is a trip of about six hours. We stopped at Hunters Lodge along the way to have a cup of tea before continuing. Just before proceeding after tea there was a Striated Heron at the end of the pool, and a little later a White-headed Barbet and a flock of Chestnut-fronted Helmetshrikes came in. We continued to Tsavo West and had a game drive through the park on our way to the lodge through dense acacia scrub and woodland, very different from Samburu, which very dry and open. We arrive at Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge a bit late, but lunch was still being served. After lunch we checked into our rooms and then took another game drive. There was a lot to see. We drove toward the volcanic ash and rocks and saw lots of birds, including Golden-breasted Starling , Buff-crested Bustard , Eastern Yellow-billed Hornbill , Bateleur , and both Three-streaked and Black-crowned Tchagra. This was the first time we came across Klipspringer (a pair) on the volcanic rocks. There also were many Lesser Kudus in the thickets and lots of African Elephants . At sunset we start heading back to Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge to have dinner and stay overnight. Here was plenty of wildlife at the waterhole in front of the dining room and guestrooms, including Plains Zebra , African Buffalo , Yellow Baboon , Impala , and Common Waterbuck .

Day 17, 25 September 2019. Tsavo West National Park to Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary

After coffee and tea we took an early-morning game drive before breakfast. It yielded a lot of birds for which we hardly had to move any distance away from our lodge. After breakfast we had a late-morning game drive on our way to the Taita Hill Wildlife Sanctuary, our next destination. En route we took a walk at Mzima Springs, enjoying Hippopotamuses and colorful fish in the clean, transparent spring water.

From Mzima Springs we drove out of Tsavo West National Park to the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, a private sanctuary of some 110 square kilometers/28,000 acres, arriving in time for lunch at the Sarova Salt Lick Game Lodge. After lunch we went along a riverine forest stripe to a marsh with a vast African Elephant community. Along the way we found diverse avian communities ranging from weavers ( White-headed and Red-billed Buffalo Weavers , White-browed Sparrow- Weaver , Lesser Masked Weaver , and Speke’s Weaver ), White-browed Coucal , and storks ( Woolly-necked , Marabou , and Yellow-billed Storks ) to multiple vultures ( Hooded , White-backed , Rüppell’s , Lappet-faced , and Palm-nut Vultures ). A highlight definitely was the striking Red-bellied Parrot .

As we drove back to the lodge we encountered a Cheetah with four cubs on a kill. The grass was too tall for perfect photos, but it was just gorgeous to enjoy the feeding behavior of mother and cubs. Our first Southern Ground Hornbills in a family of four walked in, but our focus was still on the unique cheetah- and cub behavior, which we watched for rest of the afternoon until there was no more light. On our way back to the lodge, when the cameras were locked away and it would have been much too dark for photos anyway, there suddenly appeared a Serval out of nowhere and equally suddenly disappeared before the cameras were out. Quite a few unidentifiable nightjars also flew over.

Day 18, 26 September 2019. Taita Hills Forests IBA and Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary

Our second day at Taita Hills was scheduled for a forest bird walk in the morning. After breakfast we drove to the Taita Hills Forests IBA (International Bird and Biodiversity Area as defined by BirdLife International) some two hours away. We were ascending to a higher altitude of about 700 meters/2297 feet elevation. We arrived a bit late at around 8:30 a.m. and met our resident guide, Nathaniel, who was waiting for us. It was slightly chilly here, and the forest was quite dense. These highly fragmented forests patches are of great importance for conservation, because they hold three endemic birds and many other endemic taxa, including plants. We were targeting Taita Thrush , Taita White-eye , Taita Apalis , Taita Fiscal, Stripe-cheeked Greenbul , Striped Pipit , and White-starred Robin . We saw and photographed most of these apart from the thrush, which we saw but it was very shy, and the apalis, which we did not manage to see.

We had to return to the sanctuary for a late lunch and our last game drive at Taita Hills in the afternoon. We had dinner and the second and last night at the Sarova Salt Lick Game Lodge.

Day 19, 27 September 2019. Taita Hills to Watamu via Mida Creek

With a picnic lunch we drove north-west toward the Indian Ocean coast, stopping at Mida Creek for lunch, followed by birding at the creek. We were joined for lunch by our local guide, Mr. Jonathan. Mida Creek is a tidal inlet, a diverse ecosystem, including different species of mangroves and open sand and mud flats. Its life is heavily dependent on tidal movements. The creek covers an area of about 32 square kilometers/12 square miles. We encountered a rich diversity of avian coastal species in this ecosystem. Kentish Plover , Lesser Sand Plover , Greater Sand Plover , Caspian Plover , Grey Plover , Little Stint , Curlew Sandpiper , Sanderling , Broad-billed Sandpiper , Ruff , Terek Sandpiper , Ruddy Turnstone , Sooty Gull , and Gull-billed Tern were some of the species recorded. Since we were still birding around 15:30 p.m. the tide was slowly heading up the shore and the shore started flooding, leaving no room for feeding waders. At this time we headed to Sabaki River, where three different rivers, the Tsavo, Galana, and Athi, finally pour their water into the Indian Ocean. However, birding was not to happen, because the tide was rising beyond the mangroves, and this would be the time for hippos to come onto the land. So we unfortunately had to stop, head to our hotel, and look forward for forest birding tomorrow. We had dinner and stayed overnight at the Turtle Bay Beach Club in Watamu.

Day 20, 28 September2019. Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve

We had a very early breakfast and then headed to the Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve for birding. This is a large continuous block of coastal dry forest on the Kenyan coastline. It’s unique with large numbers of endemic and/or endangered species of wildlife, including mammals and birds. We didn’t have any luck with the endemic Golden-rumped Elephant Shrew, but the birding was fantastic. Our highlights were Black-bellied Starling , Amani Sunbird , Red-capped Robin-Chat , Fischer’s Turaco , Trumpeter Hornbill , Little Yellow Flycatcher , Black-headed Apalis , and, most importantly, Sokoke Scops Owl . Back at the hotel we found both Holub’s Golden Weavers and Golden Palm Weavers in a nesting colony. We spent our final night again at the Turtle Bay Beach Club.

Day 21, 29 September 2019.  Departure

We flew back from Watamu to the Nairobi airport to board our flights back home.

Day 1: Morning arrivals into Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), from which we will take an afternoon flight to Lamu on Manda Island. We will hopefully have time to pin down the near-endemic Black Boubou straight away, along with Eastern Black-headed Batis and Bare-eyed Thrush. Night on Manda Island.

Day 2 : Early morning birding on Manda Island before heading south to Watamu, where we will be staying for the next three nights.

Day 3-4 : Arabuko-Sokoke Forest will be our first port of call, as we search for the near-endemic Sokoke Pipit and Sokoke Scops Owl, along with Fischer’s Turaco, East Coast Akalat, Amani Sunbird, Mombasa Woodpecker, Little Yellow Flycatcher, Forest Batis, Chestnut-fronted Helmetshrike, and Plain-backed Sunbird. Other east coast specialties in the area include Mangrove Kingfisher, Green Malkoha, Lowland Tiny Greenbul, Fischer’s Greenbul, Black-headed Apalis, and Pale Batis, among dozens of other more widespread east African birds shared with Tanzania and Mozambique. There is also a good chance to see the Critically Endangered Golden-rumped Sengi here. In more open country, we hope to visit a colony of the endemic Clarke’s Weaver and may find localised Golden Palm Weaver nearby. Although the former species is not guaranteed every year, the late timing of our tour will give us the best possible chance to find them. Easier species include the near-endemic Scaly Babbler, Violet-breasted Sunbird, Coastal Cisticola, and Malindi Pipit. Other range-restricted species include Dodson’s Bulbul, East Coast Boubou, and Zanzibar Red Bishop. Then, around the mouth of Sabaki River, we will search for Crab-plover, Dimorphic Egret, Sooty Gull, and Saunders’s Tern, while the progressing Palearctic migration might produce a few surprises like Sooty Falcon. The rare Forbes-Watson’s Swift is also known from this area but is only recorded a few times each year. Nights in Watamu.

Day 5: After a final morning in the coastal areas, we will drive inland to Tsavo East National Park for an afternoon session. This lovely reserve offers fabulous birding, and with the onset of the early-May rains, it is a particularly good place to find near-endemics like Heuglin’s Bustard, Fire-fronted Bishop, Tsavo Sunbird, Pagani Longclaw, Pink-breasted Lark, Chestnut-headed Sparrow-Lark, and hopefully the erratic Friedmann’s Lark. There should be many roadside raptors, and we will also have our first chance at specialties like Rosy-patched Bushshrike, Golden-breasted Starling, and the astounding Golden Pipit. We can expect a large variety of other exciting new birds here, including Hartlaub’s Bustard, Buff-crested Bustard, Black-faced Sandgrouse, Red-bellied Parrot, Taita Fiscal, Black-throated and Red-and-yellow Barbets, Fischer’s Starling, Red-winged Lark, and much more! Night at Tsavo East National Park.

Day 6:  We will spend the full day exploring different sections of Tsavo for the hardest specialties before leaving at dusk to continue to our hotel at the base of the Taita Hills, putting us in prime position for the following day.

Day 7 : Near the top of the Taita Hills, we will be focused on finding several of the rarest birds in Africa in tracts of remaining forest. These are the Critically Endangered endemics Taita Thrush and Taita Apalis, plus the more common but still Vulnerable endemic Taita White-eye. Other interesting species might include Silvery-cheeked Hornbill, Spot-flanked, Brown-breasted, and D’Arnaud’s Barbets, Usambara Double-collared Sunbird, Striped Pipit, Stripe-faced, Placid, and Grey-olive Greenbuls, Yellow-throated Woodland Warbler, and Evergreen Forest Warbler. Night near Taita Hills.

Day 8: We will have another morning to search for any missing Taita Hills species before a long drive north towards the slopes of Mount Kenya. Some short stops will hopefully produce the stunning Straw-tailed Whydah in breeding plumage! Night in Embu.

Day 9: This morning, we will visit Castle Forest, where we hope to find the little-known Abbott’s Starling. We will have our first chance for several specialties like the endemic Kikuyu White-eye, plus the range-restricted Hartlaub’s Turaco and Olive-breasted Greenbul. Other target species might include Olive Ibis, Moustached Tinkerbird, Tullberg’s Woodpecker, Mountain Oriole, Hunter’s Cisticola, Chestnut-throated and Grey Apalis, and Brown-capped Weaver, though there are again many more widespread African birds in this area which we will also bump into! Afterwards, it will be time to head north-east to Shaba National Reserve for our two-night stay. During the drive, we will make a stop for the range-restricted Boran Cisticola, and arrive at our comfortable lodge on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River this evening.

Day 10: Exploring both Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserves today will surely be highlighted by both Somali Ostrich and the wonderful Vulturine Guineafowl! Our main target will be the endemic William’s Lark (a specialised inhabitant of ancient rocky lava-strewn plains), and we will have another chance for Friedmann’s Lark. Several localised or near-endemic specialties occur here too, including Grant’s Woodhoopoe, Brown-tailed Rock Chat, Magpie Starling, Donaldson Smith’s Sparrow-Weaver, White-headed Mousebird, and Black-bellied Sunbird. Other possibilities include Somali Courser, Somali Bee-eater, Acacia Tit, Fischer’s Sparrow-Lark, Pygmy Batis, Pringle’s Puffback, Bristle-crowned Starling, White-bellied Canary, Steel-blue Whydah, and Somali Bunting, among several other Horn of Africa endemics. There is a small chance for the scarce Somali Sparrow, and we will be on the lookout for Critically Endangered Rüppell’s Vultures, plus Pygmy Falcon and Secretarybird. On the mammal front, we can expect to see Grevy’s Zebra (the most threatened of the three extant Zebras), Southern Gerenuk, Galla Oryx, the attractive “Reticulated” subspecies of Giraffe, and hopefully Cheetah. Night at Shaba National Reserve.

Day 11 : After a final morning in the area, we drive west, watching for the near-endemic Jackson’s Widowbird (in spectacular breeding plumage at this time of year), and maybe Grey Crowned Crane or Little Rock Thrush. Our destination is Aberdare National Park, where we will spend the next two nights.

Day 12 : Exploring this astonishingly scenic area today will see us focusing on the endemic Jackson’s Francolin and Aberdare Cisticola. Other specialties include the stunning Golden-winged Sunbird, rare Scarlet-tufted Sunbird, Mountain Yellow Warbler, Moorland Chat, and the range-restricted Kandt’s Waxbill. More widespread species include Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater, Tacazze Sunbird, and Abyssinian Crimsonwing. Night at Aberdare National Park.

Day 13: This morning, we will target the Vulnerable endemic Hinde’s Babbler before we head west to Lake Baringo. The major specialties we may have our first chance at seeing on arrival this afternoon are Jackson’s Hornbill and Northern Masked Weaver, the latter breeding near the lake shore at this time of year alongside Golden-backed Weavers. Another range-restricted species here is Hemprich’s Hornbill. Spotlighting here is often productive, with Three-banded Courser, Slender-tailed Nightjar, Greyish Eagle-Owl and Northern White-faced Owl all possible. Night at Lake Baringo.

Day 14: Morning birding at Lake Baringo followed by a drive further west to Kakamega Forest. We may succeed in finding White-crested Turaco along the way, and hopefully arrive in time for some initial birding this afternoon. Night near Kakamega Forest.

Day 15: Exploring this superb and diverse area, we will be focused on finding several specialties that are not regular on any other birding routes. Grey-chested Babbler (a member of the restricted Modulatricidae family) is fairly common in Kakamega, as is the near-endemic Turner’s Eremomela and “Golden-billed” Bar-tailed Trogon. Similarly, Blue-headed Bee-eater and Uganda Woodland Warbler are rarely seen in other countries, so we will put in considerable effort for these. We will inevitably run into many other more widespread birds endemic to the belt of forest between Uganda and Cameroon, which may include highlights such as Black-and-white-casqued Hornbill, Grey-throated Barbet, Stuhlmann’s Starling, Jameson’s and Chestnut Wattle-eyes, Joyful Greenbul, and Black-faced Rufous Warbler. Night near Kakamega Forest.

Day 16: After another morning birding in Kakamega, we will head southward to Lake Nakuru for an overnight stay.

Day 17: We can usually expect huge numbers of both Lesser and Greater Flamingos to provide a stunning backdrop to our morning birding around Lake Nakuru! The range-restricted Hildebrandt’s Francolin can often be seen around our lodge’s gardens, and the scarce near-endemic Grey-crested Helmetshrike will be sought out among roving flocks of the more common White-crested Helmetshrike. Nearby birding might allow us to find Kenya Sparrow and maybe the impressive Southern Ground Hornbill. Moving east back towards Nairobi, we will spend the afternoon in tussock grassland on the western edge of the Aberdare Mountains. This highly threatened habitat is the home of an Endangered Kenyan endemic: the attractive Sharpe’s Longclaw, which will be our main focus, alongside the near-endemic Lynes’s Cisticola. The tour ends this evening in Nairobi at the International Airport (NBO). Conveniently, most flights depart between 11pm and 2am, but if required, we can help arrange accommodation near the airport for anyone who wishes to depart the following day.

NOTE: On request, we can arrange a short extension to Masai Mara, one of Africa’s most famous national parks offering exceptional safaris. Although the main migration is at a different time of year, we would still see huge numbers of mammals, ranging from African Lion and Cheetah to African Elephant and an array of antelopes and other ungulates. Although most of the birds to be found here are widespread, a small handful of near-endemic specialties shared with Tanzania include Karamoja Apalis, Rufous-tailed Weaver, Red-throated Tit, Rosy-throated Longclaw, and White-tailed Lark.

Prime birding season in Kenya falls during the short rains of November and early December. This period showcases most species in vibrant breeding plumage, featuring captivating display behaviours of whydahs, widowbirds and bishops. Additionally, it’s when numerous Palearctic migrants make their presence felt, so the count will be high.

During Kenya’s ‘summer,’ from December to March, the entire country experiences its hottest months. Coastal regions, characterised by tropical conditions, encounter elevated humidity in April and May, although strong winds provide respite. Lowland areas remain hot but predominantly dry, contrasting with the more temperate highlands that showcase distinct seasons. Nairobi, situated at altitude, maintains a consistently pleasant climate year-round.

Near Lake Victoria, temperatures escalate significantly, accompanied by heavy rainfall. This diverse climate spectrum across Kenya offers a varied experience for travellers throughout the year.

Mosquito repellent is crucial to ward off insect bites, and taking anti-malarial tablets is highly recommended.

DAY 1 of the Bird Watching Trips Kenya Package - Arrival - Our representative will pick you from the Jomo Kenyatta Airport and will be taken to Nairobi Safari Club Hotel.

- Proceed to Nairobi National Park after check-in at the hotel. Visit the National Museum Bird BLOG in the afternoon and then go to the Nairobi National Museum Botanic Garden. Different species like Sunbird, Collared Sunbird, Palm Swift, and the Baglafetch are in abundance.

- Three times a meal will be served in the Nairobi Safari Club Hotel.

DAY 2 - Nairobi - Lake Elementaita - Depart for the Lake Elementaita in the morning and see the bird species like Avocet, Glossy Ibis, Red-Billed Teal, Feral Lovebird, and the Black-Tailed Godwit.

- An afternoon walk on the bank of Lake Elementaita Lodge is worth it.

DAY 3 - Lake Elementaita - Lake Naivasha - We will leave for Elementaita for a drive via Great North road to reach the Lake Naivasha before lunch which will be served at the Lake Naivasha Lodge.

- Lake Naivasha is a freshwater reserve and it was associated with the birds in 1967. The Lake serves the flowers and wine industry. During our complete day trip to Lake Naivasha as a part of the Bird Watching Trips Kenya Package, we would visit the birds like Herons, fish eagles, black crakes and the lily totters. Only a few lakes have more dominant position than Naivasha. Excursion towards the Elsa mere center is also part of the trip.

- Dining served at the Lake Naivasha Lodge. DAY 4 - Lake Naivasha - Hell's Gate National Park - Morning walk with an aim to view the birds on the bank of Lake.

- Spare some time for relaxation before lunch starts.

- Pay a visit to Hell’s Gate National Park in the afternoon to see the breeding ground of vultures. Some other species like Imperial Eagle, Chin Spot Batis, etc.

- Dinner and night stay would be again at the Lake Naivasha Lodge. DAY 5 - Hell's Gate National Park - Lake Nakuru National Park - Leave for the Lake Nakuru National Park. It is also named the Pink Heart of Kenya due to its significance in that context. Millions of Flamingoes come to this lake every year.

- The game and bird view would be at the Lake Nakuru Lodge. DAY 6 - Lake Nakuru National Park - We will be busy all this day of Bird Watching Trips Kenya Package in watching birds at the park and would see “the Leopard” which rests at the park in the evening.

- The afternoon game drive is to see and capture some of the amazing photos which we have not seen all day.

- Dinner would be at the Lake Nakuru Village.

DAY 7 - Lake Nakuru - Masai Mara - Drive through the Great Rift Valley which is one of the longest Rift to the Masai Mara Game Reserve. The great plain ecosystem is embedded with the Masai Mara ecosystem characteristics. Big fives like leopard, elephant, buffalo, lion, and cheetah live in herds at the plain of antelope.

- Accommodation, a furnished one, is arranged at the Mara Sopa Lodge. Sopa means to welcome and indeed you will realize in the plains that the people really welcome such things. The lodge presents a perfect blend of serenity and beauty.

- Take a dip in the pool and then go for the game drive in the afternoon. After the sunset, the best place to enjoy the scenery is Mara rolling plains. Shy leopards can be seen easily during the night time.

- Dinner will be served at the Mara Sopa Lodge.

DAY 8 of the Bird Watching Trips Kenya Package - Masai Mara - Early morning birding game will be a very good start for the memorable end of the whole tour. This will be in your heart throughout your life.

- Spend your time in the Mara Plains to see the 450 species present in the reserve.

- The dining will be arranged at the Mara Sopa Lodge. DAY 9 - Masai Mara - Nairobi - On the last day of your Bird Watching Trips Kenya Package drive back to Nairobi just after the healthy breakfast.

- Enjoy your lunch at Toona Tree Restaurant. Good Italian food will be provided in a hotel in the Nairobi.

Surprisingly, more than 100 distinct species of birds can be seen in a single protected area.

Meet and welcome our company representative upon arrival, then head to the accommodation you have reserved. After receiving a briefing regarding your 14-day safari for bird viewing in Kenya, unwind and get ready for an exciting birding experience the next day. You might start seeing different bird species right at your resort on this particular day.

After breakfast, travel to Lake Naivasha to go on a bird-watching excursion. Kenya’s second-largest freshwater lake, Lake Naivasha, is home to a variety of animals and birds.

You will be on time, check into your lodge, have lunch, and then head to Lake Naivasha to search for birds. Some of the birds you may see there are the Egyptian Goose, Garganey, Hottentot Teal, Northern Shoveler, Fulvous Whistling-Duck, Red-knobbed Coot, Laughing Dove, Yellow-billed Duck, Red-eyed Dove, Emerald-spotted Wood-Dove, Black Crake, Ring-necked Dove, Namaqua Dove, Eurasian Moorhen, African Swamphen, and Striped Crake.

In order to see more aquatic wildlife and water birds, you will also go on a boat ride around the lake.

Start your full-day birdwatching excursion at Lake Naivasha after breakfast. You’ll want to look for a variety of birds, including Maccoa Duck, Wahlberg’s Eagle, Booted Eagle, Steppe Eagle, Imperial Eagle, Ruff, Hilderbrandt’s Francolin, Green Sandpiper, Verreaux’s Eagle, Arrow-marked Babbler, Grey Crowned Crane, African Fish Eagle, Madagascar Bee-eater, European Bee-eater, Northern Carmine Bee-eater, Tawny Eagle, Osprey, Hybrid Lovebird, Buff-bellied Warbler, Red-throated Wryneck, Black Cuckoo, African Hoopoe, and Malachite Kingfisher, among others.

It’s possible to encounter animals like red hippos, impala, Grant’s gazelles, and others.

After breakfast, take a car to another fascinating Kenyan birdwatching location. Lake Nakuru is a well-known spot to see flamingos and big groups of pelicans.

You’ll be at your reserved lodge on schedule, where you’ll check in, have lunch, and then drive to the park to search for various bird species in the acacia woods, tall cactus-like trees, and euphorbia-covered plant zones.

The wooded area surrounding Lake Nakuru serves as a home to more than 400 different species of migratory birds.

Watch out for birds such as the Great snipe, Bateleur, Arrow-marked babbler, Abyssinian thrush, and Black-winged lapwing, Black-tailed godwit, The lap-faced vulture Canary brimstone, backed by a brown scrub robin, Crab-plover Hildebrandt’s starling, European roller, Eastern imperial eagle, Grey-headed woodpecker, Grey-crowned crane, Eagle with a larger spot, Grey-crested shrunken helmet, Rufous sparrow of Kenya, smaller flamingo.

After breakfast, spend the entire day in the park going on a game drive safari and bird watching.

Some of the unique birds found in this soda lake are Lesser Flamingos, Greater Flamingos, Great White Pelicans, Pallid Harriers, Greater Spotted Eagles, Black-winged Stilts, Grey-crested Helmet-shrikes, Black-necked Grebes, Little Grebes, Yellow-billed Storks, Madagascar Pond-Herons, African Spoonbills, Grey-headed Gulls, and Gull-billed Terns, among other unique birds.

In addition, a variety of creatures will be seen by you, including lions, leopards, wild dogs, wildebeest, cheetahs, hyenas, buffalo, zebra, hippo, black rhinos, and giraffes.

After breakfast, depart your accommodation, drive north of the equator to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, home of the final two female northern white rhinos and the late male northern white rhino who passed away in 2018.

After lunch and check-in later in the afternoon, you will head to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy to go birdwatching. You’ll be looking for birds such as the D’Arnaud’s barbet, Kenya rufous sparrow, Taita fiscal, Black-winged lapwing, Black-necked spurfowl, Black-winged scimitarbill, Blue-naped mousebird, Black-winged lapwing, Black-winged go-away bird, Taita fiscal, Montagu’s harrier, and Abyssinian scimitarbill.

Among these are the Rufous Chatterer, Temminck’s Courser, Nubian woodpecker, Rosy-throated longclaw, White-eyed slaty flycatcher, and Buff-crested bustard.

After breakfast, go on an armed ranger-led morning nature walk to look for birds on foot. Remember to bring your binoculars and camera on this particular day so you can catch the action and get a closer look at the birds.

More than 300 different species of birds can be found in Ol Pejeta Conservancy, including migrant, resident, accidental, endangered, and almost endangered species.

Return to the lodge for breakfast and then unwind after an exhilarating moment exploring the outdoors on foot. After lunch, go on a game drive in the evening to witness a variety of wildlife and birds.

After breakfast, make your way to the Samburu Game Reserve to see a variety of wildlife and birds. A thrilling road trip to the north will also be enjoyed by you; you’ll arrive in time for lunch.

Proceed to the game reserve later in the evening to search for a variety of birds and animals, such as the Beisa oryx, long-necked gerenuk, Somali ostrich, and reticulated giraffe.

After breakfast, go on a game drive excursion across open savannahs, scrub deserts, and lush flora to observe wildlife and birds.

The following birds can be seen at the Samburu Game Reserve: Ashy cisticola, Pygmy batis, Rosy-patched bush-shrike, African palm swift, Acacia tit, and Vulturine guineafowl Black-capped social weaver, Black-bellied sunbird, Reichenow’s eater of seeds, Rock talk with a brown tail, Donaldson-Smith’s sparrow-weaver, Chestnut-headed sparrow lark, and Chestnut weaver Lanner falcon Ermomela with yellow veins, Fischer’s starling The bare-eyed thrush Golden-breasted starling, Golden-pipit, larger kestrel, Somali ostrich, Somali bee-eater, The grey warbler or wren, The Hunter’s Sunbird Northern brownbul, Mariqua sunbird, The palm-nut vulture Red-bellied parrot, Red-necked falcon, Red-winged lark, Pink-breasted lark, Secretary Bird Among these are the White-headed Mousebird, Von der Decken’s Hornbill, Singing Bush Lark, and Spotted Palm Thrush.

On this day, you will also witness a variety of species, including hundreds of elephants and the Grevy Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, Somali Ostrich, Gerenuk, and the Beisa Oryx.

After breakfast, make your way to Meru National Park for a safari to observe birds. With over 300 species, the Meru National Park is one of Kenya’s best places to go birding.

The park is home to various specialties from northern Kenya, such as the magnificent Boran cisticola, Somali ostrich, and vulturine guineafowl. Not to mention the numerous sightings of the highly sought-after Hinde’s babbler, the boisterous yellow-necked spurfowl. The African finfoot, the localized golden palm weaver, and Pel’s fishing-owl find the ideal habitat in the rivers that flow through Meru.

You’ll get there in time for lunch and spend the rest of the day resting in preparation for the next day’s game drive and bird watching.

Drive to Meru National Park after breakfast to search for birds such as the Northern pied babbler, Martial eagle, Black-faced sandgrouse, Grant’s wood-hoopoe, African finfoot, Bat hawk, Black-faced sandgrouse, Buff-crested bustard, Golden palm weaver, Golden-breasted starling, Boran cisticola, Pel’s fishing-owl, Rufous chatterer, Somali bee-eater, Somali ostrich, Taita fiscal, and Yellow-necked spurfowl, among others.

A variety of species will also be present for you to see, such as white or black rhinos, hippos, Nile crocodiles, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, elephant, giraffe, and hippo.

To see more birds in the park, take an early morning game drive after eating breakfast and walking up.

Travel to Nanyuki to check into the hotel you have reserved, eat lunch, and then spend the rest of the evening unwinding.

There is also the option to take a tour of the town’s local shops to purchase souvenirs.

Head to Mount Kenya National Park for another exciting birdwatching adventure after a hearty breakfast.

In addition to being well-known for its mountain trekking experiences, Mount Kenya National Park is home to over 130 different bird species, including Meyer’s Parrot, Green Pigeon, and Violet-backed Starling.

The allure of this location is that, as you travel along, you’ll get to experience thrilling altitude bird watching from foot while immersed in one of Africa’s most distinctive ecosystems, home to a broad variety of unusual bird species.

After that, head back to your hotel to unwind and spend the remainder of the night.

After breakfast, conclude your 14-day bird watching safari in Kenya by making your way back to Nairobi and stopping at the Giraffe Center or the Karen Blixen Museum.

On arrival Nairobi, you are met by representative.  Transfer to Boulevard Hotel for overnight.  Dinner and overnight at the Hotel

Day 2: Drive Nairobi  – Naro Moru River Lodge

An early walk in the gardens of the hotel provides our first counts of Kenyan birds: Northern Pied Babbler, Holub’s Golden Weaver, Speckled Mousebird, Black Kite, Pied Crow, Olive Thrush. After breakfast we will drive north towards Mt. Kenya stopping at the Karatina Dam, which is a seasonal swamp that is partly covered by reeds and water hyacinth. Some common finds here are African Jacana gracefully trotting on the wide hyacinth leaves, Little Grebe, White-faced Whistling Duck, Black-headed Heron, Sacred and Hadada Ibis, Black Cuckoo-shrike and African Paradise Flycatcher.

We will continue to the Naro Moru River Lodge arriving in time for lunch. Generally the Naro Moru area is very dry but there is a remaining patch of the Mt. Kenya Forest and the lodge is set just on the forest border. The gentle flowing Naro Moru River separates the lodge from the forest and all the cottages are facing the river. Add to this the extensive garden with a lot of flowering plants and you have a birding paradise.

The afternoon walk will be on the river trail looking for such residents as the African Green Pigeon, a range of Sunbirds (we think of the Tacazze, Bronze and the Variable), Rufous Chatterer, Chin-spot Batis, Giant Kingfisher…

Day 3: Mount Kenya National park

After birding in the garden we will drive to the Mount Kenya National park to look for the highland species. Interruptions during this drive could come from Long-tailed and Red-collared Widowbirds and Pin-tailed Whydas that are common on the long grass. Leaving the vehicles at the park gate, we will walk in the forest and we will see many species including Hartlaub’s Turaco, Olive and Eastern Bronze-naped Pigeon, Silvery-cheeked and Crowned Hornbill, Rüppell’s Robin-Chat and the Yellow-crowned Canary.

Day 4: Drive Mount Kenya to Lake Nakuru

We head west to Lake Nakuru, which is famous for its thousands of Lesser Flamingos – the Greater Flamingoes will be easily distinguishable by their height. The Great White and Pink-backed Pelican and Black-winged Stilt are also there.  Dinner and overnight at Flamingo Hill Tented Camp.

Day 5: Lake Nakuru National Park

The lake has a low concentration of salt, so it supports fish that of course attract other water birds.It is a good place to look for Avocets, Storks, Ibises, Ducks, Cormorants, Herons, and Terns. In the wooded acacias there is a chance to see the White-browed Coucal, Broad-billed Roller, Arrow-marked Babbler and the Narina Trogon. Overnight in Flamingo Hill Tented Camp.

Day 6: Drive Lake Nakuru to Lake Baringo

After breakfast we head further north to Lake Baringo. This is a fresh water lake with a slight degree of alkalinity. The climate is dry and the cliffs around house a variety of bird life. Over 400 species of birds have been recorded. The woodlands by the lake are alive with White-browed Sparrow-Weavers, Jackson’s and Red-billed Hornbills, Bristle-crowned Starlings, and the rare Northern Masked Weavers, there are several Hamerkops along the lakeshore and with luck we should be able to see their nest, which a pair of Grey Kestrels have adopted as a home.

There will be time to relax, enjoy the pool, and bird the grounds of the lodge for the resident Spotted Eagle-owls, and Sunbirds such as the Beautiful, Hunter’s and the Violet-backed. Nightjars are common on the lakeshores at night and the Hippos graze freely on the lodge’s lawn. Overnight is at Lake Baringo Country Club.

Day 7: Day in Lake Baringo

Before breakfast, we will bird the escarpment and surrounding countryside for Hemprich’s and Eastern Yellow-billed Hornbill, White-crested Turaco, Madagascar Bee-eater, Rufous-crowned Roller, Gabar Goshawk, Cliff Chat and Verreaux’s Eagle which feeds on the Rock Hyrax.

Later on the day we make a boat ride over Lake Baringo, always on the lookout for new bird species. We will come close to the Goliath Heron, African Fish Eagle, Malachite Kingfisher, plus swimming hippo and crocodiles. Dinner and overnight at Rondo Retreat.

Day 8 : Drive Lake Baringo to Kakamega Forest

We aim to reach Kakamega Forest for a late lunch. This forest, in the heart of an intensively cultivated agricultural area, is a superb remainder of virgin tropical rainforest and is of course the home to a wide range of specialty birds, many which are not found anywhere else in Kenya. The forest is not only home to the rare De Brazza’s monkey (only found in Kakamega Forest), but also to the Hammer-headed Fruit Bat, Flying Squirrel, 400 species of butterflies and no less than 330 species of birds.  Overnight at Rondo Retreat.

Day 9: Kakamega Forest

Yes, birding in a forest has its fair share of difficulties but this is easily forgotten when our count increases with hopeful sightings of the impressive Black-and-white-casqued Hornbill, Ross’ and the Great Blue Turaco. Other notables are the Grey-headed Negro-finch, Red-headed Bluebill, Chestnut Wattle-eye, Mackinnon’s Shrike and many more. Overnight in the Rondo Retreat in the forest.

Day 10: Drive Kakamega Forest to Lake Naivasha– Crater Lake Tented Camp

A scenic transfer through the Nandi Hills and the tea rich area of Kericho takes us back to Nakuru and further south to the Lake Naivasha area.We reach Crater Lake in time for a late lunch where we’ll stay for the next two nights. In the afternoon we do a bird walk in the Crater Lake game sanctuary. Dinner and overnight is in the luxury tented camp of Crater Lake. Here each tent is furnished with a giant four-poster bed, dressing room and an en suite bathroom with hot shower.

Day 11: Lake Naivasha – Crater Lake Tented Camp

To have the best sightings of the bird life in Lake Naivasha, Crescent Island is the place of choice. It is a lagoon from where we should be able to see Grey-capped Warbler, Spectacled Weaver, Brimstone Canary and Red-billed Firefinch. There are also a lot of fish eaters. Both the Long-tailed and Great Cormorant together with the Fish Eagle and the Pied Kingfisher are common here.

Day 12: Drive Lake Naivasha  – Maasai Mara

We head to the famous Masai Mara National Reserve, which borders Serengeti in Tanzania. Mara is the gem of game viewing and bird watching in Kenya with 450 species recorded. We will drive through Masai land, home to one of the most fascinating cultures in Africa.In the vast grasslands we expect to see Elephants; the large Cats – Lion, Leopard, and Cheetah; the herd animals – Zebra, Wildebeest, Thompson’s and Grant’s Gazelles; and specialties like the Hartebeest and the Topi.

Expected bird species are the highly conspicuous Common Ostrich, the small but still conspicuous Cardinal Quelea, Sooty Chat, Ground Hornbill, Open-billed Stork, Temminck’s Courser, Yellow-throated Sandgrouse and Denham’s Bustard. Lilac-breasted Rollers are common. If we find a kill, we may see six species of vultures all dining together: Egyptian, Hooded, Griffon, Lappet-faced, White-backed and White-headed. It will be a double reward should a Hyena or a Jackal join in the scramble for the kill.

In addition we will encounter numerous raptors such as Bateleur, Martial and Tawny Eagles, as well as Pale Chanting Goshawk, Augur Buzzards and Black-chested Snake Eagles. Dinner and overnight Mara Simba Lodge.

Day 13: Days in Maasai Mara Game Reserve

All day  bird-watching in the Maasai Mara. Along the Mara River we’ll watch for African Finfoot, Schalow’s and Ross’ Turaco, Crested Guineafowl, Woodland Kingfisher, Yellow-billed Barbet, Black-billed Weaver, Violet-backed Starling, and perhaps with luck, Pel’s Fishing Owl.

Any tapping noise on the trees may be indicative of the relatively uncommon Woodpeckers (Golden-tailed and Fine-banded). Hopefully we will be lucky enough to see some of the more difficult to see mammals such as Bat-eared Fox, Hunting Dog, Serval and the delightful Banded Mongoose. Mara Simba Lodge

Day 14: Drive Maasai Mara to Nairobi and depart

After early morning game drive and breakfast, transfer back to Nairobi in time for lunch. Later transfer to the airport for your homebound flight.   End of Safari – Kwaheri!

The Top 10 Best Bird Watching Spots in Kenya

Sometimes referred to a birdwatcher’s paradise, with about 500 species recorded, Lake Baringo is well known among birdwatchers. And it’s also one of my favorite spots for birding!

1. Nairobi National Park

Nairobi national park is one of the most unique parks in the world. It is the only wildlife park within a capital city and hosts a wide variety of wildlife including the Big 5, and over 500 species of birds.

The park has a range of habitats including open grasslands, lightly wooded plains, rocky valleys, seasonal wetlands, dams, forest lined rivers and stream, and montane forests. So it is not uncommon to get a species list of more than 200 species in a day!

The savannah grasslands host a variety of seed-eating birds from Orange-breasted W

axbills and Black-cheeked Waxbill to Yellow bishops, and the Near Endemic Jackson's Widowbird. Other birds expected would be Shelley's Francolins, Kori Bustards, Secretary Birds, Black-shouldered Kites and about 10 species of Cisticolas.

The dams and seasonal wetlands hold a huge number of water birds, including: Grey Herons, African Darters, African Water Rail, Saddle-billed, Yellow-billed and Marabou Storks. Rivers and streams also hold the elusive African Finfoot. And the montane forest is great for Palearctic migrants such as Eurasian Bee-eaters, Blackcaps, Common Nightingale, Upcher's and Willow Warblers.

2. Mt Kenya National Park

Mt Kenya is the highest mount in Kenya, and arguably the most difficult to climb. But Mt Kenya also host a wide variety of montane forest and moorland species. The forests on the slopes of the mountain are most productive in birds, but the shy forest birds are sometimes more often heard than seen.

The cold montane forest are a heaven for elusive birds like the Olive Ibis, Abyssinian Ground Thrush, Black-fronted Bushshrike, Montane White-eye, Bar-tailed Trogon , Jackson's Francolin, Mountain Buzzard and Abbot's Starling.

As you climb higher, you will reach the bamboo zone which house a different array of species like Mountain and Slender-billed Greenbuls, White-headed Woodhoopoe, White-starred Robins, Thick-billed Seedeater and Oriole Finch.

After having passed the bamboo zone, the moorland welcomes you to the land of Sunbirds, like Northern and Eastern Double-collared, Tacazze, Malachite, Scarlet-tufted and Golden-winged Sunbirds. The moors are also good for spotting Moorland Chat and White-naped Ravens. If you're very luck, you might spot a Bearded Vulture which many say have disappeared from Mt Kenya.

3. Samburu & Buffalo Springs National Reserve

The semi-arid areas of samburu are well known for its Samburu warriors and diverse wildlife like the threatened Grevy's Zebra, Reticulated Giraffes and even Black Leopards. But this area also hosts about 400 species of birds in its dry environment. The Ewaso Ny'iro river that passes through these parks is a vital source of precious water, and many birds and animals can be expected to visit the river at different times of the day.

The Acacia bushland dominates much of the Samburu area and birds like Pygmy falcons, White-headed Buffalo Weaver , Magpie Starlings, Somali Bee-eater, Vulturine Guineafowl, Donaldson Smith's Sparrow-weaver, Eastern Yellow-billed Hornbill and the tiny Yellow-vented Eremomela are easily found.

Most of the lodges with well maintained gardens in the park can be a magnet for the surrounding birds such as; Abyssinian Scimitarbills, Black-capped Social Weaver, Black-throated Barbet, Black-bellied Sunbird and sometimes a Shining Sunbird.

The riverine woodland of the Ewaso Ny'iro river is a refuge especially for big raptors like Verreaux's Eagle Owl, Martial Eagle, African Hawk Eagle, Egyptian, Lappet-faced and White-headed Vultures can all bee seen roosting on the tall trees. Smaller birds that inhabit the woodland are Orange-bellied Parrots, Lesser-masked Weavers and Scaly-throated Honeyguide.

The main river and springs attract waterbirds such as African Spoonbills, Water Thick-knees, Reed Cormorants, African Darters and many waders like Wood Sandpipers, Three-banded, Little-ringed and Kittilitz Plovers.

4. Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha is one of the freshwater lakes along the rift valley. It is well known locally for its sheer number of waterbirds. The edges of the lake are fringed with yellow fever trees which host a wide variety of special birds and free ranging wildlife.

The lake itself hold a huge number of water birds such as; Great White and Pink-Backed Pelicans, Reed and Great Cormorants, African Darters, Yellow-billed Ducks, Red-billed and Hottentot teals, Red-knobbed Coots, Black and Grey Herons, Great White, Little and Cattle Egrets, African Spoonbills, African Skimmers, Grey-hooded, Lesser Black-backed and Common black-headed Gulls, Lesser and Common Moorhen, Purple Swamphens; and the highest concentration of African Fish Eagles anywhere in Kenya!

The woodland around the lakes are quite productive and you can come across; White-fronted Bee-eaters, Wahlberg's Honeybird, Black-lored and Arrow-marked Babblers, Variable Sunbird, Green Woodhoopoe, African Grey, Cardinal and Nubian Woodpeckers.

5. Kinangop Plateau

The Kinangop plateau is an abrupt floor that rises from the floor of the rift valley. Although this area is outside a protected park or reserve it still host quite a few special birds, including the Endemic Sharpe's Longclaw.

The tussock grasslands that stretched for mile are now farmlands, but the birds can still be seen hanging on these artificial habitats. Birds commonly seen around these grasslands/farmlands are; Sharpe's Longclaw, Rufous-naped and Red-capped Larks, Cape Rook, Capped Wheatear, Long-tailed and Jackson's Widowbirds, Hunter's, Leveillants and Stout Cisticolas, Red-throated Wryneck and Augur Buzzards.

Marshes and seasonal lily ponds in the grasslands attract Grey-crowned Cranes, Yellow-crowned Bishop, Glossy Ibis and the elusive Lesser Jacana. Migrant Harriers also frequent the wet marshes like the Western Marsh, Pallid and Montagu's Harriers.

6. Lake Baringo

The Baringo area has a similar semi-arid environment as that of Samburu, but the plants and animals are very different. There are steep cliffs on one side of the lake and mixed woodland and grasslands on its opposite shores, which are both bustling with birds from the northern territory.

The cliffs are good places to look for its resident pair of Verreaux's Eagle, Grayish Eagle Owl , Hemprichs Hornbill, Fan-tailed Raven, Brown-tailed Rock Chat and Mocking Cliff Chats. The dry scrub around the cliffs has Bristle-Crowned Starlings, Pygmy Batis, Three-streaked Tchagra, Brubru and Red-fronted Warbler.

The grassland on the opposite are great for Spotting Heuglin's Courser, Jackson's Hornbill, Spotted Thicknee and Lichtenstein's Sandgrouse. The woodland and scrub hide Northern White-faced and African Scops Owls. Other birds you are likely to see around the lake are Northern Red Bishop, Northern Masked, Little and Golden-backed Weavers, Allen's Gallinule and Black Crakes.

7. kakamega forest

Kakamega forest is the only remnant of the Guineo-congolese rainforest in western Kenya, which makes it a hotspot of unique bio-diversity. Close to 450 species have been recorded here.

The forest has species found here that are found no where else in East Africa such as; Blue-headed Bee-eater, Ansorge's and Kakamega Greenbul. Other uncommon birds that can be found in the forest are; Yellow-bellied Wattle-eye, Equatorial Akalat, Turner's Eremomela, Southern Hyliota and African Broadbill.

The streams in the forest are great for spotting White-spotted Flufftails, Banded Prinia, Grey-chested and Black-faced Rufous Warblers and Scaly-Breasted Illadopsis. While clearings in the forest are good places to look for Great Blue Turaco, African Crowned Eagle, Western Banded Snake-eagle and Black-and-white Casqued Hornbills.

About a dozen different greenbuls can be found in the higher canopy to lower canopy of the forest, these greenbuls can be tricky to differentiate by sight, so call are a good way of knowing what bird you are seeing. Not forgetting the lovely barbets of which there are many species like; Yellow-spotted, Grey-throated, Hairy-breasted and Yellow-billed Barbets .

8. MASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE

This popular park probably needs no introduction and is definitely the most visited park in Kenya. The park is renowned for its Masai people, vast herds of migrating wildebeest and high density of predators, but it’s also a spectacular place for Birdwatching with over 550 species recorded!

The Masai Mara is mostly grasslands but also has some acacia scrub, riverine forest and cliffs on the Oloolol escarpment. Grassland birds such as Red-necked Spurfowl, Black-bellied Bustards, Crowned and African Wattled Lapwings, Temminck's Courser and Fawn-colored Larks are commonly seen on a game drive.

While the scrub and bush are good places to find Magpie Shrike, Karamoja Apalis, Pale Wren Warbler, Rufous-tailed Weavers, Usambiro Barbet, Green-capped Eremomela and about 10 species of Cisticolas; including Long-tailed, Red-faced, Croaking, Siffling, Black-backed and Rock-loving cisticolas, to name a few.

The riverine forest are where often leopards are seen with their kills high up in the trees. But there are also great birds around, such as; Shalow's and Ross's Turaco, Bare-faced Go-away-bird, Green-backed and Golden-tailed Woodpeckers, Yellow-throated Greenbuls, White-chinned Prinia and Luhders Bush-shrike.

9. Arabuko Sokoke Forest

It is the largest remaining coastal forest in East Africa and famous for its diversity in mammals, butterflies, amphibians and birds, many of which are only found here. The endemic Clarke's Weaver is also found here.

The forest is made up of miombo woodland, cynometra and mixed forest. The main forest highlights would be; Sokoke Scops Owls , Amani Sunbird, East Coast Akalat, Red-tailed Ant-thrush, Fischers Turaco, Mombasa Woodpecker, Little Yellow Flycatcher and the endemic Weaver.

But of course, there are many more enjoyable birds to see, the open miombo woodland is great to search for gorgeous Bush-shrike, Forest and Pale Batis, Dark-backed Weaver, Southern-banded Snake-eagle, African Pygmy Kingfisher, Yellow-bellied and Fischer's Greenbuls.

The mixed forest is much denser and sometimes impenetrable, but cool species seen here are Blue-mantle Crested Flycatcher, Tiny Greenbul, Terrestrial and Northern Brownbul, Green Barbet, Eastern Green Tinkerbird, Peter's and Green-backed Twinspots. Fiery-necked Nightjars and African Wood Owls can commonly be seen on the forest edges at night.

10. Mida Creek

Mida creek is a wonderful and important place for migrants’ seabirds and is a locally protected site. The creek floods during high tide, but when the tide goes out, all the waders and seabirds forage the beach to feed. The mangroves around the creek are important in sheltering the coast from the harsh winds of the sea.

Many of the palearctic waders come here during the Eurasian winter (September-April). When the tide goes out, it’s the perfect opportunity for them to feed. Migrants like; Common Ringed Plovers, Greater and Lesser Sand Plovers, Crab Plovers , Common Greenshanks, Whimbrel, Grey Plovers, Eurasian Curlews, Terek, Marsh and Common Sandpipers are easily spotted and seen in good numbers. Gull-billed, Caspian, Saunders and Common Terns can be seen flying with Sooty Gulls and an occasional Osprey as they go out to sea.

The mangroves and coastal scrub are great to get coastal resident birds like; Black-headed Batis, Three-banded Plover, African Paradise Flycatcher, Black-bellied Starling, Zanzibar Greenbuls, Speckled Mousebirds, Village Weavers, Purple-banded, Amethyst and Violet-Bbeasted Sunbirds. Some afro-tropical migrants can also be found from April-August, such as; African Golden Oriole, Mangrove Kingfisher and Red-capped Robin-chats.

Yellow-spotted Barbet,one of the six species of forest Barbet found in Kenya.

Barbets are often brightly coloured and easily recognisable since they are pretty active birds and mostly found around fruiting fig trees along rivers edges and forest.They are mostly frugivores and usually swallow fruit whole.With the long time it takes for the fruit to digest,barbets are therefore very effective dispersers of seeds in their respective habitat.

Globally,Barbets are holes nesters either on the trees,termites hills and in the ground and for that reason,their destribution in the local habitat are generally influenced by the presence of suitable trees,particularly those with soft,dead branches,which are much easier to peck out.

Yellow-spotted Barbet,is mostly found in the tropical rain forest of Kakamega in Kenya and extensively in Uganda and Congo.While on the similar habitat here you also have the chance of seeing Hairy-breasted,Grey-throated and Yellow-billed Barbets and all of the extremely beautiful to watch.

Chubb’s Cisticola:The Highland Duetter of Kakamega and South Nandi Forest.

Cisticolas are African warblers which are mostly found in grassland savannas and moist forest habitat of all elevations.Out of 50 species listed,36 of them are found in East Africa and it is known for its field identification nightmares especially if you are birding Africa for the first time.For better identification,it is better to rely on your ears than your eyes….so musical ears and better memory are invaluable assets in this case.

Moustached Grass Warbler,an African Warbler of Moist Savanna and Tropical Shrubland.

This species is easily encountered while birding moist grassland savanna like Nairobi national park,Masai Mara national reserve,Amboseli and the expansive Tsavo West and Tsavo West. The photo appearing above was taken in Nairobi national park.

Large, unusual brown warbler with a black tail, pale eye, and black “moustache” mark. Found in patches of tall, thick grass within savanna and scrub habitats. Generally skulking, and most often seen when it sits up to sing. The song is a chatty, warbling jumble with a distinctive fast cadence. Similar in overall shape and habitat to Fan-tailed Grassbird, but much larger, with a pale eye and black facial streak.

Brown Parisoma, Remarkably Plain Brown Warbler found in the canopy of Acacia Trees at Middle or High Elavations.

Brown Warbler as it is sometimes referred to is Remarkably plain brown warbler whose most outstanding features are a finely speckled throat and a white outer tail. Found in the canopy of acacia trees at middle or high elevations. Slow-moving and inconspicuous. Usually seen singly or in pairs.

We observed this bird last Saturday when Scott and I went birding Nairobi national park for a half a day which was quite successful.Other than the Brown Parisoma which I love always love to watch,we also managed to pick-up species like Hartlaub’s Turaco,Singing Cisticola,African Yellow Warbler,Red-throated Tit and Sulphur-breasted Bush-shrike just to name a few.

Other than Nairobi national park,this bird can be seen in Aberdare national park,Western escarpment of the Rift Valley and Masai Mara .Have a remarkable birding week!

Eastern Grey Plantain-eater,the dominant Turaco around the Lake Region of East Africa.

Eastern Grey Plantain-eater, Crinifer zonurus ,is a huge Turaco found mostly in areas around Lake Victoria and its environs.It is a relatively common and noticeable bird,and unlike their forest counterparts,they lark radiant co lours.Their plumage is overall grey above spotted with brown. The head, erectile crest, neck, and breast are brown streaked with silver. The underparts are whitish, and heavily streaked with brown.Eastern Grey Plantain-eaters have a thick bright yellow bill and show a white wing bar in flight.

In Kenya it is a very easy bird to see around Kisumu city at the shores of Lake Victoria,Ahero rice plantations,Busia,Homabay,Kongolai valley and Migori.

Greater Painted-snipe, a medium sized,stunningly plumaged shorebird of grassy fields and marshes.

Males are more colorful or ornamented than females in most, but not all, bird species.The female Greater Painted-snipe is striking compared to the male.This two were photographed at Amboseli national park at Enkongo causeway which is also good for watching Blue-billed and Cape Teal,Southern Pochard,White-backed Duck,Saddle-billed Stork and giant looking Goliath Heron.

This species can also be found at Mwea rice field,Lake Nakuru national park,Masai Mara and Nairobi national park.

Fischer’s Turaco (Tauraco fischeri),the Musophagidae family member found a long the East Africa Coast.

Fischer’s Turaco is a commonly recorded species along the East Africa coast.Birders will surely encountered the species when birding subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest of Arabuko Sokoke forest,Shimba Hills national park and Amani nature reserve located in Eastern Usambara mountains.

Fischer’s turacos have amazing shades of green feathers marked with touches of red and white. Easy to distinguish with its crimson crest, nape, and primaries and inner secondaries. The crest is tipped with black at the tallest part, white on lower portion. The upper parts are green- blue to violet-blue, with lower belly being much darker. The red bill has white lines both above and below the black lore area; bare orbital skin is red and the eyes are brown. The wings are rather short and rounded; tail is long. Turacos are noted for peculiar and unique pigments, giving them their bright green, blue and red feathers.

White-tailed Ant-Thrush,a fine-looking catch for Kakamega Forest.

Kakamega forest is the only remnant of tropical rain forest in Kenya.Its diversity in birds and butterflies is mind boggling.I am sure botanist and other biologist will have a great time here.Kakamega’s avifauna is unique not only nationally,but continentally. Several species have isolated, relict populations here, including Ansorge’s Greenbul,Blue-headed Bee-eater,Chapins’ Flycatcher and Turner’s Eremomela ,which are absent from all or nearly all of the superficially similar mid-elevation forests in Uganda.

White-tailed Ant-Thrush is a rare but regular in Kakamega forest both in the southern section(Isecheno) and northern part(Bhuyangu).There are also records of the species from Nandi south forest.Enjoy and keep birding!.

White-chinned Prinia also kown as White-chinned Warbler (Schistolais leucopogon)

White-chinned Prinia is one of the two species found in Kakamega tropical rain forest,the other one frequently recorded there is Banded Prinia.Both species are found in thick understory of forest,overgrown cultivation,and edge habitats.This species has unusual broad-tailed with a white throat,it is also important to note the black cheek and white in the outer rectrices.

Usually the species is found in small very actives groups always continuously moving inside the vegetation cover exposing themselves once in a while.When the birds are singing,they clearly line-up on an exposed horizontally lying branches proving excellent opportunities for photography.

In Kenya the species is only found the remnant patches of tropical rain forest of Kakamega and South Nandi,both in Western Kenya.

Blue-headed Bee-eater(Merops muelleri).

Bee-eaters are beautiful birds to observe in the field, but the exhilaration among birders on sighting of a Blue-headed bee-eater is remarkable .Really attractive Bee-eater. This species is strictly restricted only to Kakamega and South Nandi Forest in Kenya. However, other isolated populations of this species are found in West Africa as well.

This brilliantly colored Bee-eater can be encountered on any birding walks around Kakamega forest with some efforts, local guides will be of great help, although you can really run into it with some luck.

Usually Bee-eaters are gregarious, but not Blue-headed Bee-eater, I have not recorded more than three individuals at a go. They are arboreal birds that perch on exposed branches.
