Will Beyoncé announce the 'Cowboy Carter' tour? Fans think she may be hitting the road again soon

  • Beyoncé released her new album "Cowboy Carter" on Friday.
  • Some fans think she's gearing up to tour again, though many say they don't have the funds to attend.
  • The Renaissance World Tour wrapped last October in Kansas City. It was hailed as a must-see event.

Insider Today

Less than a year after the Renaissance World Tour wrapped, it might already be time for the Beyhive to dust off their boots and head back out to see Beyoncé live again.

The Renaissance World Tour was hailed as a once-in-a-lifetime event , a bona fide status symbol , and a blockbuster concert movie that awed audiences while near-singlehandedly boosting AMC's revenue . The 56-show run wrapped on October 1, 2023, in Kansas City.

On its heels, Beyoncé has released her new album " Cowboy Carter ." The triumphant country-inspired project is billed as "Act II" in a three-part "Renaissance" series.

So it would stand to reason — financially and thematically — that Beyoncé would plan another tour leg for "Cowboy Carter."

Her team seemed to hint that something is coming by launching a new website, " Been Country ." The landing page shows a photo of young Beyoncé performing at the Texas Sweetheart Pageant, as well as a childhood photo of her mother, Tina Knowles-Lawson , and an image of a banjo.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Slayonce Avenue (@slayonce_avenue2)

A fan account on Instagram shared a rumor that the tour announcement is scheduled for Friday, exactly one week after the album's arrival. Knowles-Lawson liked the post, adding more fuel to the rumor's flame.

Beyoncé's longtime collaborator The-Dream, who produced 10 of the new album's 27 tracks, also alluded to a forthcoming tour. He celebrated the release of "Cowboy Carter" on X, writing, "This tour bout to B' Incredible!"

Fans grabbed screenshots of The-Dream's post, though it has since been deleted.

However, the six-month turnaround since Beyoncé's last concert does cast suspicion on these theories. Thanks to "Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé," we know the Renaissance World Tour took four years to ideate and execute.

It's unclear if plans for a "Cowboy Carter" show were also in the works during that time, but if not, fans may have to wait a bit longer to watch Beyoncé perform. As she's already made clear, " A queen moves at her own pace ."

Even so, a delay may come as welcome news, even for dedicated members of the Beyhive.

Many fans have been posting about their lack of ticket funds on X, playfully begging Beyoncé to put off touring until next year.

There is no artist now that is comparable to Beyoncé. She stands by herself above all other entertainers, as a singular force she is Queen Bey and yes I am a huge Beyoncé fan. I've liked her music but Lemonade is an amazing album, touching on different musical genres, and my anthem is Formation so I had to see Beyoncé for the Formation World Tour.

Large arenas are so cumbersome but I bared through it, drove 3.5 hours, waited in line, parked near (but not really) sat down and within 15 minutes it started. I must say considering everything, the show started on time.

The moment I heard that distinctive beat for Formation and saw Beyoncé and her dancers come out, I LOST MY MIND (I was just screaming and jumping with no real aim but to release all my energy). I was in the same space as Beyoncé and it was a lot of screaming. Much like those videos of girls loosing their mind over Elvis, the Beatles, and Justin Bieber- I was doing that and it was fantastic. Because collectively the entire audience was also LOOSING THEIR MINDS. Just that experience like communal euphoria it's very hard to get but damn it if it doesn't make you feel magical.

The stage had a giant cube and screens and I could definitely see a little figure (I didn't have the best seats) who happened to be Beyoncé. Before she begins, she asked as questions and if we agreed we had to respond with "I Slay" I didn't so much say it as screamed it at the top of my lungs like my life depend on it. GOD DAMN, I was gonna get in formation and slay if it was the last thing I ever did.

From there, the show just kept going for two hours, she sang, danced, and slayed. She sounds live like she sounds on the albums, and she danced for the majority of the time, like she never stopped moving. The intermissions were brief, between the intermissions and the slow songs- I took a breather, because, I unlike Beyoncé needed to rest from all the singing along and jumping I was doing. She did some songs from Destinys Child, the majority of her hits (no show for Irreplaceable and Single Ladies).

In the end, after everything, I was just amazed. For one, I could have lived at any time in history, but I get to live in the time of Beyonce. For two, I saw the greatest performer of my generation live. For three, I saw Beyoncé at her peak, with the greatest album she has released (so far). When I'm old- I'm going to be telling the youngins about the time I saw Beyoncé live for the Formation World Tour, and they will be amazed. I can't wait to tell the story. En fin, if you get a chance do it, see Beyoncé because it will change you, transform you, it will slay you, and you will be amazed.

I ended up winning my tickets to Beyonce online. I wasn't a huge fan before the gig but just decided to enter the comp on a win. I loved some of her previous stuff and was intrigued by the new album Lemonade. On arriving at Croke Park in Dublin the buzz was unreal. We were sitting up in the gods in the Cusack stand and we had a great view. We got to see the second support act Chloe x Halle and they were awesome. The noise in the stadium was brilliant everyone was singing and dancing just full of happiness and joy. Then Welcome To The Formation Tour came up on the big screen and the place erupted. When queen B graced the stage her presence was just electric. The whole show from start to finish was absolutely amazing. Bey has such an incredible stage presence and her voice is outstanding. The dancers and choreography was on point and just made you want to get up and shake what your mother gave you haha. I can truthfully say Beyonce gained another super fan in me that night. So entertaining and engaging with the crowd. And that ass!!! My boyfriend came with me (reluctantly!) only to see that ass in the flesh!! By the last part of the concert he was up dancing with me and all the people around us. I have to say where we were sitting was superb because the people around us were so friendly and we had a great time with everyone. Bit of scandal.... There was a girl in our row a few seats up (we'll call her boots girl) and she was giving it loads and more until..... She puked vodka all over the girl sitting in front of her!!!!!!! Now I'm all for having a drink and enjoying myself but seriously there is no need to get that wasted. My heart went out to the poor girl she puked on and everyone seen it. Soooo embarrassing. Everyone in the row in front of booty girl was terrified that they would become her next victim!! On a final note if you ever get a chance to go see Beyonce GO GO GO... You will not be disappointed and u will leave on a high that will last for days after. BEYONCÉ YOU SLAY

Half of the fun of going to this Beyonce concert was to watch the crowd as I was waiting for my friends. This crowd did not disappoint. Lots of clubbing outfit, even in a chilly place like Seattle. A very pregnant woman wearing mini dress and high heels. Very diverse group of people. But I digress.

This was my first Beyonce concert.

I had a high level of expectation due to being told repeatedly that Beyonce is such a perfectionism. So for me this was a letdown. After the opening act of DJ Khaled ended, we had to wait more than 1 hour for Beyonce to show up on stage. What was taking so long? the hair? the makeup?

And the acoustics were horrible. Unless you knew the words to her songs, you couldn't make out what she was singing as her voice was totally drowned by the music.

She gave us a medley type of show, singing part of a song then segueing into another song. That was disappointing as I like to hear my songs in full. But that's a personal preference.

Beyonce was stunning and seemed to have a great time performing for her fans.

Lots of gorgeous visuals, lots of smoky and pyrotechnic effects reminiscent of Las Vegas acts if that's what you're into.

Crowd participation. Probably a given as her fans adore her. They do not just sit down to passively be entertained. Most of them were on their feet dancing to the music.

Fired up energetic dancing from her and her dancers.

And on the few sets where they actually toned down the music and allowed us to hear her voice, Beyonce shone and showed why she is the superstar that she is.

I am a really big Beyoncé fan and was really pumped up to see her – I'd been waiting for years for the chance. The concert was at our local arena and there were about 18,000 other fans in attendance, so I was worried it might not feel very special. But if anything, that made it more memorable: the place was full of energy and people ready to dance and sing.

She was really on it that night and her voice sounded so great. She did her slow songs like “If I was a Boy” with just as much energy and soul as she performs her faster hits like “Drunk in Love” and “All the Single Ladies” (which was epic). Her costumes were equally impressive (she must have changed outfits half a dozen times) and she looked so good in all of them, she truly is a really beautiful lady. Her shows have a kind of sexy appeal and it came off as very authentic, not crass. The way she moved her body and the emphasis she gave on certain songs just made the whole thing one good raunchy affair!

During the show she gave a few shout outs to her husband Jay Z and the amazing band she tours with. You can probably imagine, we were so worn out from dancing and singing once the show was over with.

Beyoncé has absolutely taken hold as the single most important female performer in pop music these days and if you are lucky enough to see her in concert, that will only help to prove that she belongs in that role. Hopefully she will be back in the near future – I'll be first in line for tickets :)

The first indication that The Formation World Tour would be a cinematic experience, as well as a sonic one, was when the THX logo appeared on the side screens, along with the signature deep note. A few seconds later, the rotating (sixty-foot, three-dimensional) multimedia display came to life with pulsating black-and-white nudes of Queen Bey spliced with footage of a hawk flying high above its prey.

“Welcome to the Formation Tour, can I hear you say ‘I slay!’”

Beyoncé, along with about a dozen dancers donning wide-brim hats and black leotards, marched down the catwalk in true formation. Visual clips and poetry about being “Sorry” eased the transition into the track with the deceptive name; all while 50,000 people filled the San Diego stadium with screams that could be heard in Mexico. And as if Bey couldn’t express her discontent with her own two hands, she instructed her dance troupe to line up behind her with arms outstretched; providing an octopus illusion of middle fingers in the air while she told that “boy bye,” before interjecting an acapella version of “Kitty Kat” in between the hook and the famous last verse about “Becky with the good hair.”

Beyoncé + Jay Z is the concert experience you think of when you think of the ultimate arena concert experiences. It's the full package - amazing choreography, costume changes every few minutes, stage effects and of course, hit song after hit song. Although as a whole it's an extraordinary, confident show, it is very clear that Beyoncé drives 80% of the action - although Jay-Z is very good, there's nowhere near the same amount of energy or showmanship that makes Beyoncé's songs so exciting.

Even at over 2 hours in duration, the show only provides a sample of their formidable discographies - but the selection is solid. You won't get the 10-minute long "Single Ladies" jam you've dreamed of, but even the nods to songs like this and "Countdown" are unique and memorable.

So in all, this is a show that has it all - great remixes, a visual feast and never a break in the action. If you have even just a passing interest in the B+JZ duo, you'll find this an incredibly enjoyable night out.

I was really looking forward to this show, I've been waiting for years to see Beyoncé. I purchased standing tickets, and yes, I expected that I won't be able to see much of her. What I didn't expect was the drunk people squeezing in front of me after queuing for 1,5hours, and people covering even the little view I had out with their phones to take videos. But even that I can deal with, although it made me sad. What really disappointed me was the sound. Maybe it's just me, I don't know, but unfortunately her voice didn't come through clearly. I could have dealt with all the other things if it was a fantastic audio experience, but I am very very sad to say it wasn't. Beyoncé was amazing of course, but somehow the entire experience is more a negative. I can't even believe I am saying this as I was really excited and convinced I was gonna have a great time, as it's B, she is a perfectionist, sound can't go wrong. It did, I'm sorry. Maybe next time will be better.

I really love Beyoncé so this was honestly the best night of my entire life. My friend and I were lucky enough and got there early enough to be in the second row in Gold Circle 1 so we were really close. I am quite short so I struggled to see her on the main stage but the 'Monolith' was massive so I could watch her and the visuals on that. She did spend quite a bit of time on the second stage and the runway which was quite disappointing but we could watch the whole thing on the 'Monolith' so that was okay. Amazing band, amazing dancers, amazing crew, amazing visuals - so many talented people made this show what it was. Overall, it was honestly an amazing show, she is such a talented performer and I would definitely pay that to see her again - hopefully soon! 10/10

The On The Run 2 tour was amazing with great performances by Beyoncé and Jay-Z. There were obviously large queues to get in early on and the standing pitch was very busy (unsupisingly). However, although Beyoncé’s performance was incredible and full of energy and voice of an angel, Jay-Z had a completely different vibe. I felt that their music did compliment eachother but Jay-Z’s performance didn’t seem as energetic or engaging as Beyoncé. I was hoping to hear a lot of Beyoncé’s ‘Lemonade’ album but unfortunately only 2-3 songs came up from that album. Their collaborative songs were very good I.e Crazy in love, Drunk in love and Deja Vu. In the whole, I had a great experience and though Beyoncé was amazing and proved herself of being Queen B!

A very EPIC show!!! The opening act were pretty good and they managed not to lose my interest. The seating was amazing! We were right near the stage. The seats that they give are kind of uncomfortable though. The Mercedes Benz Stadium is a very nice venue with friendly vendors and staff. Traffic wasn’t too bad as long as you know how to get around the main crowd. Jay Z and Beyoncé put on a SHOW!!! The vibes that you get when at a Beyoncé concert is always great. I would highly recommend anyone who appreciates music, good dancing, a performance, and loves Beyoncé should definitely see Beyoncé in concert at least once in their lifetime. Wonderful show and can’t wait for her to come back out!

Beyoncé Announces Renaissance World Tour

The star’s first solo tour since 2016 will start May 10 in Stockholm.

Beyoncé smiles widely at the Grammys podium, wearing a black dress with a plunging neckline.

By Joe Coscarelli

For the first time since 2016 — a world before Beychella , Covid-19 and “Renaissance” — Beyoncé will headline a solo tour, the singer announced in a social media post on Wednesday.

Beginning on May 10 in Stockholm, and continuing in Europe through June before coming to North America, the Renaissance World Tour, in support of her seventh solo album, will run for at least 40 dates, largely in stadiums, according to dates posted to Beyoncé’s website . The tour includes one night at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey (July 29) and one at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. (Sept. 2) amid stops in Chicago, Philadelphia, Toronto, Atlanta, Phoenix and Miami.

Limited tickets for certain tour dates will go on sale beginning Monday for members of Beyoncé’s BeyHive fan club, followed by the staggered release of additional tickets by market, using a complex registration system for various tiers of buyer.

The tour, produced by Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment and promoted by Live Nation, will use Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan system , which aims to limit bots and professional scalpers, marking one of the first major tests for Ticketmaster since extraordinary demand for early tickets to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour last year led to fan backlash and regulatory scrutiny . At a Senate Judiciary hearing last month spurred by the botched presale, artists, fans and politicians cast Live Nation Entertainment, the concert industry giant that owns Ticketmaster, as a monopoly that hinders competition and harms consumers.

Beyoncé’s shows will be the singer’s first live events available to the public since the On the Run II tour with her husband, Jay-Z, in 2018, tied to the surprise release of a joint album, “Everything Is Love,” by the duo billed as the Carters. Beyoncé last toured alone behind her previous solo album, “Lemonade,” in 2016. Two years later, she headlined the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

That show — which went on to be released as “Homecoming” (2019), a live album and concert film — was called “rich with history, potently political and visually grand” in a review by the New York Times critic Jon Caramanica. “By turns uproarious, rowdy, and lush. A gobsmacking marvel of choreography and musical direction.”

In the years since, Beyoncé has surfaced intermittently, including with songs like “Black Parade,” which won a Grammy Award for best R&B performance, and “Be Alive,” which appeared in the movie “King Richard” and was nominated for an Oscar. Last year, in a taped performance, Beyoncé performed the song at the 94th annual Academy Awards.

But the singer made a return to the pop mainstream in earnest with the July 2022 release of “Renaissance,” a dance-floor-oriented album that she said was inspired by the L.G.B.T.Q. community and has spawned hits like “Break My Soul” and “Cuff It.” At the Grammy Awards on Sunday, Beyoncé is nominated nine times , with a chance to become the most-awarded artist in history.

Upon its release, the singer called “Renaissance” part of a “three act project” that she recorded during the pandemic. “My intention was to create a safe place, a place without judgment,” she wrote of the album, which was billed as Act I. “A place to be free of perfectionism and overthinking. A place to scream, release, feel freedom.”

Major music touring has largely recovered, especially at its highest levels, since the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the industry trade publication Pollstar , touring grossed a record-setting $6.28 billion last year, up more than 13 percent from 2019, due in part to pent-up fan demand, inflation and major acts like Bad Bunny, Elton John and Harry Styles.

In addition to Beyoncé’s shows, this year will see blockbuster tours from artists including Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Metallica, Morgan Wallen and Madonna.

Last month, Beyoncé proved more polarizing than usual when she headlined the grand opening of a luxury hotel in Dubai, performing for an invite-only collection of guests, including influencers and journalists.

While some fans decried the optics of taking a major payday in a place that criminalizes homosexuality — “Beyoncé’s Dubai performance isn’t just an affront to LGBTQ+ fans, but workers’ rights in the UAE,” The Guardian declared — others noted that the singer’s set list did not yet include songs from “Renaissance.”

An earlier version of this article misstated the year Beyoncé headlined Coachella. It was 2018, not 2016.

Why Beyoncé Fans Are Asking Her to Hold Off on Announcing a Cowboy Carter Tour

R umors that Beyoncé will announce a tour to support her eighth studio album, Cowboy Carter , have been swirling online since the project came out last week. And though the singer has not announced plans for a tour as yet, the speculation has many fans already anticipating steep ticket prices.

“BRB gonna apply for a new credit card,” wrote one person on X in response to a post from a pop culture account that suggests Beyoncé will announce a tour on Friday. “I mean, we don’t have money, but we will be there,” wrote another.

While there has been no official announcement of a new tour, the singer’s most followed fan accounts fueled rumors on Thursday by sharing a link on to a site called BeenCountry.com, which takes users to a page of photos of Beyoncé and one of her mother when she was younger with her maiden name, Celestine Beyince.

As rumors fly, fans are begging Beyoncé to hold off on announcing a tour, joking that they still need to financially recover from her last one. The Renaissance World Tour, which wrapped up in Oct. 2023 and was her first since the On The Run Tour II in 2018. According to Billboard , tickets for the Renaissance Tour ranged in price depending on the reseller. The average fan could expect to pay around $400 to $550, Billboard reported, with resale tickets for her Houston show going for as low as $279.

“NO TOUR UNTIL 2025,” one post said, and it was met with support from other commenters. “I ain’t going to the cowboy carter tour y'all,” another post says, “I thought I had more time. I thought I had more time.”

Another person joked that they wouldn’t be able to eat real food because they knew the concert would be expensive. According to Billboard , the Renaissance Tour tickets ranged in price depending on the reseller. They report that the average fan could expect to pay around $400 to $550, with resale tickets for her Houston show going for as low as $279.

The rumors of a new tour are still unfounded, but not impossible—although it would come faster than Beyoncé’s announcement for the Renaissance World Tour, which arrived several months after she released the album in 2022. It would not be unlike Beyoncé to have a few tricks up her sleeve, some that delight her fans—and some that throw them into a frenzy.

Def Leppard pumped for summer tour with Journey: 'Why would you want to retire?'

beyonce tour 2024

Def Leppard has been shredding stages for more than 40 years, but the band’s hunger to electrify fans keeps escalating.

The quintet of Joe Elliott (vocals), Rick Allen (drums), Phil Collen (guitar), Vivian Campbell (guitar) and Rick Savage (bass) is readying its third consecutive summer stadium tour for a July 6 liftoff in St. Louis.

A reliable group of rock rousers, Def Leppard always brings a set list stocked with their crunchy melodic anthems spanning 12 studio albums – “Photograph,” “Let’s Get Rocked,” “Foolin’” and “Armageddon It” a mere sampling – as well as recent fare.

The giddy rocker “Kick,” from their 2022 album “Diamond Star Halos,” has nestled into the live show, and this round of dates will also offer “Just Like 73,” their recently released stomper dusted with shades of Gary Glitter and Slade.

Collen knows that Def Leppard’s set list, as well as its production and staging, needs to continually advance for the veteran band to maintain its relevancy and points to two of music’s stratospheric stars as motivation.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

“When you see Taylor Swift or Beyoncé in concert, it’s bringing it to another level,” Collen says. “For us, it’s always been about someone raising the bar and us pushing past it.”

The cheerful, oft-shirtless guitarist chatted a few weeks out from the band’s 23-date co-headlining tour with Journey about staying healthy on tour and his pre-show rituals.

The Steve Miller Band and Cheap Trick join the bill on varying dates ; Heart was tapped for three shows, but after Ann Wilson’s cancer diagnosis , Cheap Trick will open July 30 and Aug. 2 and Steve Miller Band Aug. 5.

Is this the Summer of Rock? How tours from Creed, Def Leppard, others are igniting fans

Question: You’ve toured with Journey before as well as Motley Crue and KISS, and keep filling stadiums summer after summer. Why do you think people are still coming?

Answer: We really put everything into it. Paul Stanley (of KISS) and I gave each other classic Ibanez guitars and had them in the same room and played each other’s. His is covered in blood. He would get cut (playing) all the time and it’s still there. You put everything into a performance. You sweat and bleed. It’s not going through the motions. I’m 66 and I still go, "Is this the year I’m not going to be able to stand up?" But as long as you put the energy into it … it’s one reason I do martial arts and weight training.

How do you and the guys come up with ways to freshen the production? Do you look to other classic tours or artists for inspiration?

I’m so inspired by Mick Jagger . He’s 80 and dancing around. He’s sharp as a razor blade as well. Talking about Taylor Swift, she works so hard. Regardless of whatever anyone thinks about her, do a day in those shoes and tell me how you feel.

Has it become more challenging to find other bands to go out with you as the other headliner?

It has. Rock is aging out , dying out. Look at all the people we’ve lost the past 10 years. There is no one new replacing them. The last person with that amazing rock-star image was probably Billy Idol in the ‘80s. I’m still waiting for someone with some integrity doing their own thing and doing stuff that we all like.

You’ve been out with Journey before, but have you had any musical interactions with Steve Miller before this tour?

We haven’t toured with Steve and I haven’t met him. I saw him at the Hammersmith Odeon (in London, now the Eventim Apollo) in 1980. And Journey, despite whatever they get up to internally , we get on famously.

Do you ever get tired of being on the road?

It’s a no-brainer to be out there. You’ve written the songs – the hard part – because as inspiring as it is writing songs and recording and finding the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle, once it all comes together, the easy part is going on tour.

Inside the first shows: The Sphere in Las Vegas really is a 'quantum leap' for live music

At this point, you’re probably more comfortable touring than not.

We’re like spoiled children. You’ve also got the arrested development part where you are like children in your 60s. And we all know each other’s strengths and weaknesses and how to get someone to react. Joe the other day , he brought me to tears with laughter. I can’t even imagine being in a band not like that. It’s all really fun and love and everything. Why would you want to retire?

Fitness has obviously always been a huge part of your life. Has age played a factor in how your workouts may have changed over the years?

Yeah, you just have to be careful with your body. You don’t have to prove anything to the guy next to you in the gym. I research everything and we have an amazing trainer who tours with us.

What is your pre-show ritual?

The warm-ups, the vocal exercises, that’s a given. That starts pretty much two or three hours before the show. Joe is warmed up about eight hours before a show. I’ll do a few push-ups – they're always good to get the blood flowing.

Beyoncé fans bash new wax figure of singer: ‘this is a white woman’.

Sacre bleu!

Madame Tussaud’s famed wax museum in Paris has unveiled a new wax statue of Beyoncé and it’s not sitting well with members of the Beyhive.

Many were irked that the “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer’s skin color seemed to be whitewashed.

Madame Tussaud wax statue of Beyoncé.

“🤔😒 I DON’T KNOW WHO THE F–K THIS IS OR SUPPOSED TO BE! But it ain’t MY QUEEN! 🤷🏽‍♂️🙄🤦🏽‍♂️🤬 This is a WHITE WOMAN!,” wrote one aggrieved fan, while another noted, “now beyoncé may be lightskin but this is insane…😭😭.”

“whitewashed and failed to get her features right,” groused one person while another simply asked, “Who the hell is that supposed to be??”

A rep for Madame Tussaud did not immediately return our request for comment.

Oddly, this isn’t the first time the museum has been bashed for its depiction of the 42-year-old Grammy winner.

Beyoncé.

In 2017, a Beyoncé statue was criticized for its face , hair and perhaps most disturbingly, it’s apparent too-light skin tone, which even spawned a hashtag #TussaudsSoWhite.

Madame Tussauds New York — where the statue was displayed — addressed the hubbub in a statement to Page Six, at the time, saying: “At Madame Tussauds, our talented team of sculptors take every effort to ensure we accurately color match all of our wax figures to the celebrity being depicted.

“Lighting within the attraction combined with flash photography may distort and misrepresent the color of our wax figures which is something our sculptors are unable to account for at the production stage.”

Unfortunately, the singer’s skin-tone has been the source of endless chatter throughout her career.

Last year, Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles clapped back at trolls who accused her daughter of “bleaching her skin” or trying to pass herself off as a white woman by donning platinum locks to the premiere of her “Renaissance” tour film.

Knowles, 70, posted a montage video showing the nasty comments and ended with a message that read: “Beyoncé is a brown skin girl sometimes more or less light. A brown skin girl it’s [sic] more than a skin color. It’s a culture, a pride, a strength.”

In 2019, Beyoncé’s father Matthew Knowles addressed his daughter’s skin-tone alleging that her career was benefited by her lighter color.

How Beyoncé Celebrated Blue Ivy Carter’s Second BET Award

The singer shared a rare Instagram Story to mark her oldest daughter’s achievement last night.

preview for "Everything is Love" for Beyoncé and Jay-Z

Bey shared a rare Instagram Story dedicated to Blue’s win. She reposted Parkwood Entertainment’s message to Blue, which read, “Congratulations to Blue Ivy Carter on winning the 2024 BET YoungStars Award!” Beyoncé’s mom, Tina Knowles, commented on the Parkwood post with another message for Blue: “Congratulations to Blue Blue our little superstar in the making ❤️❤️ 🔥🔥”

beyonce's tribute to blue ivy carter

Blue competed in the category against Akira Akbar, Demi Singleton, Heiress Diana Harris, JaBria McCullum, Jalyn Hall, Leah Jeffries, and VanVan.

The 12-year-old rising star has a big fall ahead of her, as she’s making her voice acting debut in Disney’s The Lion King prequel , Mufasa: The Lion King , out on December 20. Beyoncé will reprise her role as Nala in the film, while Blue will be playing Nala and Simba’s daughter, Kiara.

Beyoncé is a woman of few words (but many outfit pics) on Instagram. However, the singer took to the platform to give Blue a special tribute last May during the Renaissance World Tour. Blue had been appearing as a dancer during the show, and Beyoncé applauded her work. “My beautiful first born 🙏🏾 I’m so proud and thankful to be your mama,” she wrote to her daughter. “You bring us so much joy, my sweet angel.”

The best albums of 2024 so far: AP’s picks include Beyoncé, Chief Keef, Kali Uchis, Waxahatchee

The sun is hot, but the tunes are hotter. We’re only halfway through 2024, and some of the biggest names in music have already released albums.

That’s as good a reason as any to take stock of this year’s releases. Here are The Associated Press’ picks for the year’s best...so far.

POP POWERHOUSES:

Beyoncé, “act ii: cowboy carter”.

It is rare for a pop album to function as a catchy body of work and an accessible masterclass on an underserved and undercelebrated history. But on “Act II: Cowboy Carter,” Beyoncé’s epic 78-minute, 27-track release , she accomplishes just that. Across the release, B positions herself in opposition to country music’s rigid power structures and educates listeners on its origins in Black music.

Taylor Swift, “The Tortured Poets Department”

Swift’s 11th album is an amalgamation of her moody synth-pop (as heard on 2022’s “Midnights” ) and literary folk compositions ( “evermore” and “folklore”) — the direct result of an artist who has spent the last few years re-recording her life’s work and touring its material. Storytelling is at the fore, delivered through an ascendant vocal run or an elegiac verse that highlight her narrative powers.

Billie Eilish, “Hit Me Hard and Soft”

Eilish’s 10-track album is stacked with rewarding fake outs. Like in the opener “Skinny,” which launches into the saccharine falsetto of her award-winning “Barbie” ballad “What Was I Made For?” only to abandon the format for the pulsating pop and sapphic yearning of “Lunch.” There is techno and hyperpop, acoustic ballads and a return to her gothic vaudeville.

Image

Ariana Grande, “eternal sunshine”

For Grande’s first album in four years , the pop singer teamed up with the mysterious Swedish hitmaker Max Martin for a collection of songs that range from earworm hooks filtered ’90s house music (“yes, and?”), wobbly ’00s R&B pop (“True Story”), Y2K revivalism (“The Boy Is Mine,” inspired by the Brandy and Monica classic) and Robyn-esque euro-pop (“we can’t be friends (wait for your love).”)

Shakira, “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran”

In the seven years since Shakira’s last album, she separated from soccer player Gerard Piqué, leading to what she’s called the “dissolution of my family,” and she faced charges of tax evasion in Spain. But she transformed that pain into art on “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran,” from the bachata “Monotonía” to the electro-pop “Te Felicito” to the mega viral “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” and beyond.

HONORABLE MENTION: Dua Lipa’s “Radical Optimism,” Tyla, “Tyla,” Kacey Musgraves, “Deeper Well,” Usher’s “Coming Home”

RAP RENASSIANCE:

Chief keef, “almighty so 2”.

Something shifted when Chief Keef released his “Almighty So” mixtape in 2013. The exemplar of Chicago drill, the rap subgenre that would define its moment, Chief Keef was a viral teenager whose sound would be heard round the world. Eleven years later, his long-teased sequel, “Almighty So 2” delivers with the immediacy of the first — but it is markedly different. Keef has never sounded more polished, more professional — but he stays true to himself.

Schoolboy Q, “Blue Lips”

On his sixth album, the LA rapper Schoolboy Q pushes himself to traverse new, unexpected territory — five years since 2019’s “Crash Talk,” and undeniably worth the wait. There are good time tracks (“THank god 4 me”) and songs of disruption (“Germany ’86”). It makes for an interesting tension – and room for discovery with each listen.

Sexyy Red, “In Sexyy We Trust”

Last year’s “Hood Hottest Princess” introduced listeners everywhere to a young, hot new Midwest MC — a fearless, funny rapper by the name Sexyy Red. This year, she’s followed it up with a mixtape, “In Sexyy We Trust,” a not-safe-for-work collection of bright, horny rap records. If you thought she was going to settle for just one viral moment, guess again.

HONORABLE MENTION: Future and Metro Boomin, “We Don’t Trust You,” Young Miko, “Att.,” Flo Milli, “Fine Ho, Stay,” Vince Staples, “Dark Times”

RULEBREAKERS:

Charli xcx, “brat”.

English pop singer-songwriter Charli XCX’s sixth album oscillates between hedonism and anxiety — the euphoria of a late night on the dancefloor and the creeping disquietude of the morning after — as much as it does her in-between status as pop queen of the underground and sometimes mainstream success story. As “Brat” summer swings in full force, it seems like she’s leaning more and more to the latter.

Kali Uchis, “Orquídeas”

On her fourth studio album, the largely Spanish-language “Orquídeas” (“Orchids” in English), Colombian American singer Kali Uchis’ ability to create lush, fluid sonic worlds reaches new heights. On “Orquídeas,” it is all sultry songs about love, loss and divination. These are self-possessed songs across a spectrum of heritages, made cohesive through her unique filter.

RM, “Right Place, Wrong Person”

The thoughtful leader of BTS , RM is usually philosophical in his solo work, unafraid to take big sonic risks, sometimes with big rewards. On “Right Place, Wrong Person,” his second solo album, RM continues to ask the big questions atop elastic, genre-averse production, from the wet, funky bass of “Nuts,” the avant-garde “Around the world in a day” to the surprising shoegaze of “Heaven.”

HONORABLE MENTION: Carin León, “Boca Chueca, Vol. 1,” Brittney Spencer, “My Stupid Life,” Álvaro Díaz, “Sayonara,” Ayra Starr, “The Year I Turned 21,” Shaboozey , “Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going”

ALBUMS YOU MIGHT’VE MISSED:Cindy Lee, “Diamond Jubilee”

Where did “Diamond Jubilee” come from? Cindy Lee — the drag alter-ego of Women’s Patrick Flegel, a fixture of Canadian indie rock since the early 2010s — released this lo-fi gem as an unmarked YouTube link. It meant listeners had to sink into its psych and garage rock in full – all two hours and 32-minutes. It’s unusual that an album this surprising, expansive and beneath the mainstream manages to break out onto best of lists.

Waxahatchee, “Tigers Blood”

The indie artist Waxahatchee, known for her gut-wrenching alt-country, demonstrates mastery of her craft on her sixth studio album, “Tigers Blood.” Waxahatchee, the musical moniker of Katie Crutchfield, is at her most evocative when documenting everyday realities. “Tigers Blood” finds simple joys; gone are tortured emotions and self-doubt communicated through distorted riffs of her previous work. Start with “Right Back to It,” featuring guitarist MJ Lenderman , which moves from country to indie rock seamlessly. It’s about easing into the later years of a steady and reliable relationship – and it sounds exciting.

Mannequin P----, “I Got Heaven”

Philadelphia punk band Mannequin P---- have never been accused of being restrained. On their latest album, “I Got Heaven,” ferociousness, self-assurance and desire are one in the same. The band moves from lust and fear (“I Got Heaven”) to dominance (“Loud Bark”) and freedom (“Aching”), playing with Christian lyricism and sexuality in the same breath. It makes for a high-octane listen — not for the faint of heart, but certainly for anyone looking for an energizing record that moves from dreamy pop to abrasive hardcore with ease.

Adrianne Lenker, “Bright Future”

It may be the summer, but this sounds like spring. Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker’s fifth solo album is simple, sparse, and singular. Her folk-y vocal tone, immediately recognizable to her most devoted listeners, is time-honored – with little more than an acoustic guitar and a harmony, she composes elegant songs with a classic sensibility. Sometimes, the most thoughtful creations utilize the fewest tools.

HONORABLE MENTION: Kim Gordon, “The Collective,” Helado Negro, “Phasor,” Hurray for the Riff Raff, “The Past Is Still Alive,” Modu Moctar, “Funeral for Justice”

The 20 best albums of 2024 so far

midyear list 2024 double j

If you're one of those people who gets to the end of the year and kicks yourself for not adhering to your New Year's Resolution to listen to more new music, you are not alone.

People are creating and releasing more music than ever these days, and it feels like fans and pundits are as quick moving on from their latest obsession as they are to adopt it.

So, it can be helpful to take stock halfway through the year. What's been released? What slipped under our radar? What deserves a second chance?

The team here at Double J listen to a lot  of music and have strong opinions about it. After much deliberation, we've put together a list of 20 records released this year worth your time and attention.

Of course there's only so much we can cover, and we weren't able to hear certain records in time for deadline, but thankfully we'll be back in a few months with a much broader list .

For now, try out a few of the albums below. We promise there's something for almost everybody.

Beyoncé – Cowboy Carter

Beyoncé rides white horse in red/white/blue rodeo suit, cowboy hat, bearing a red/white flag & sash reading COWBOY CARTER

Cowboy Carter is not just one of the greatest albums of the year, but perhaps one of the greatest albums ever. Beyoncé uses this album to reclaim space for Black artists and to highlight the often-overlooked contributions of Black musicians to country music.

Its political, cultural and historical notations are fused within a kaleidoscope of genres — Americana, roots music, contemporary soul, rock and hip hop.

There are samples from The Beatles, Linda Martell, The Beach Boys while she also shines a light on emerging Black artists like Shaboozey, Tanner Adell and Rhiannon Giddens.

Each song is delivered with such deeply considered intention, yet again proving why Beyoncé is the undisputed and illuminating leader of the modern zeitgeist.

Cowboy Carter sees her dare to venture into the unknown and potentially polarise audiences in pursuit of change. It's a potential communion for the masses, should they wish to let their preconceptions down and jive to a different sound. — Kath Devaney

Crowded House – Gravity Stairs

black & white illustration of Crowded House bandmates' heads and textured hair with coloured text: Crowded House Gravity Stairs

Gravity Stairs — Neil Finn's eighth record with the world-conquering Crowded House — is testament to the timeless quality of his songwriting.

It's also a clear indication that the newest incarnation of this iconic band is gelling beautifully. They're a great advertisement for nepotism, as the frontman's sons Liam and Elroy continue to prove their musical and creative value across the new album.

Finn's songs remain the hero, though. When you hear him lightly channel Bowie on 'Some Greater Plan (for Claire)', deliver vintage melodies on 'All That I Can Ever Own', and lock in with his family and friends on the breezy chorus to 'Oh Hi', you'll be so glad that the man has never chosen to rest on his laurels.

Tempting as it may be to load up your playlist with vintage Crowded House classics, a few spins of Gravity Stairs will give you an even deeper appreciation for one of the all-time great bands. — Dan Condon

Grace Cummings – Ramona

Brunette woman stands in tan cloth-gown by hedge & low-fenced garden fence with text: RAMONA

This album needs a warning so that listeners don't drown in Grace Cummings's intoxicating voice. Her control of her instrument on this, her third album, is staggering, especially in her powerful lower register.

She can sound as smooth as heavy silk one minute, then when she takes it up to the next level, she sounds like someone who's lived a thousand lives, including perhaps Janis Joplin, Johnny Cash and Renee Geyer's lives, and also perhaps the life of a well-loved cello.

Ramona allows Cummings to shine throughout every single track. It's an intense journey, and I love it. I love hearing someone who is the music. Grace is the music.

Grace needs to sing the next Bond theme. Grace needs to play the part of Wonder Woman in the next film, and sing these songs in it. This wondrous woman is the real deal. This album is proof of that. — Dylan Lewis

Emma Donovan – Til My Song Is Done

Portrait of First Nations singer Emma Donovan framed by dark green border and lettering: Emma Donovan Til My Song Is Done

From the old-school flavour of the record sleeve through to the mix of vintage sounds within, Emma Donovan's first proper solo album feels like discovering a gem from your parents' record collection.

Fittingly, the powerhouse vocalist has described Til My Song Is Done as an ode to her family, reconnecting with the country, gospel, and bluegrass sounds of her youth after a decade-long, award-winning run with The Putbacks .

There's some of that familiar soul-funk fire here, particularly on strutting protest song 'Blak Nation', but Donovan's aching, expressive voice also works a treat among twangy Americana, boot-scootin' rock, and delicate, soulful ballads.

Liz Stringer shows up to match her vocal muscle on 'Change Is Coming', and Paul Kelly plays support on the swaying country lullaby 'Sing You Over' (dedicated to Donovan's late mother and Uncle Archie Roach).

Til My Song Is Done is a moving dedication to Country, community, and what this proud Gumbayngirr, Dhungutti and Tamatji woman has always excelled at: showing up and singing up. — Al Newstead

Mia Dyson – Tender Heart

different shades of pink squares frame a photo of topless redhaed rising to the surface of water with floating flowers & text

The story behind this album is mind-blowing. A minor earthquake in Mia Dyson's adopted home of L.A. triggered an undiagnosed heart arrhythmia. Her heart stopped and, for a moment, she was gone. Thankfully, her husband was able to resuscitate her before Dyson was rushed to hospital. It was a terrifyingly close call that elicited a renewed appreciation for life.

Tender Heart gets into the real guts of it all — depression, death, grief, pain, gratitude, hope and love — all wrapped up in shimmering guitars, propulsive drums, and Dyson's rich vocals.

There are so many stand-outs; 'Dare' sounds like a direct response to Dyson's near-death experience, but was actually written before the incident. 'Golden Light' has gorgeous strings, and on 'Thank You', Dyson totally nails it, singing, ' Thank you. I love you. Forgive me. I forgive you '.

A beautiful reminder that time is short and none of us know what's around the corner. — Gab Burke

Sierra Ferrell – Trail Of Flowers

Art deco style illustration of woman as a griffin with elaborate frame and drawings & text: Trail of Flowers Sierra Ferrell

Sierra Ferrell is a West Virginian mountain-folk mastermind who approaches the Americana genre with a wild boldness and confidence that stretches its boundaries.

Trail of Flowers has all the sonic comfort of the ol'-timey Americana sound, without any of its conservatism. She is an epic performer with a cinematic drama to everything she touches: her incredible sense of the visual, full of scattered flowers and bold costuming, translates into the sound.

The record is embedded deep in the world of twangy tones, but the journey jumps from the wide-eyed ballad of 'American Dreaming' to the driving pulse of 'Fox Hunt', through moments of smoky jazz to Western swing. The Trail of Flowers might be the best road trip you've ever taken. — Henry Wagons

Four Tet – Three

Collage of 10x8 coloured squares with textured images, shadows and drawings.

The comfort zone. You don't ever want to get stuck there, but boy is it a nice spot to visit — especially when you really need it. A person who loves you, a friend that understands. A hug from family, a dog that sits on your feet. A food that settles your nerves, an old sitcom under a familiar blanket.

I've been listening to Four Tet's music for over 25 years, it has soundtracked moments in my life both menial and cosmic. I do the dishes listening to Four Tet. I hang out the washing. I watch the stars listening to Four Tet. I watch my daughters' faces grow, their minds and hearts too.

What timing to have this new album just when I need it, as one chapter closes and a new one starts. It's all about the sound of course, so full of wonder and warmth, but the wistful song titles also help: 'Loved'. 'Gliding Through Everything'. 'Daydream Repeat'. 'I'll Miss The System Here' (from the expanded edition, Three+).

I put on Three+ and I feel love. I feel loved. I'll miss the system here. — Tim Shiel

Beth Gibbons – Lives Outgrown

four blurry portrait images of red-headed woman against black background.

We rarely get to hear from the Portishead vocalist, but Beth Gibbons' long-awaited solo album proves, once again, she's always worth the wait.

Lives Outgrown showcases her singular voice — mysterious, devastatingly poignant and strangely comforting all at once — in spellbinding, meticulously crafted arrangements.

There are echoes of her previous achievements (the brassy 'Reaching Out') but also witchy folk ('Beyond The Sun'), sinister, sweltering missives ('Rewind') and pastoral beauty ('Whispering Love').

A decade in the making, these 10 songs are fixated with the passage of time, mortality and "lots of goodbyes".

That perspective manifests in shapeshifting music that is occasionally challenging but often beautiful, as it charts the extremes of grief and ecstasy. Sometimes, in the case of stand-out 'Floating on a Moment', within the one song.

Children's voices join Gibbons, transforming existential melancholy into a life-affirming reminder that ' All we have is here and now '.

It's a cliché, but one that bears repeating coming from a one-of-a-kind artist like Gibbons: Life is precious. So is this album. — Al Newstead

Justice – Hyperdrama

Glass cross with interior of orange nerve paths laced over a metal skeleton with pink brain and bio-organic matter

This album is a wild ride.

Some songs, like 'Neverender', featuring Kevin Parker of Tame Impala fame , feel like they should be enjoyed while splayed out on a super yacht, icy beverage with tiny umbrella in hand. Then it's dark, dank and sweaty — like I'm moving through the hallways of a seedy nightclub, each room more thumping than the last.

It's an album made for a sweaty summer and everything you need from a Justice record. It's simultaneously playful and fun, while also being full of some very serious and seriously great instrumentation and cleverly using production techniques to create and ease tension.

'Neverender' has this bouncy push and pull, shifting the beats through your body, then, in 'Muscle Memory', the moments of complete silence feel like a sharp breath.

The collaborations really lift the album up to another level; Thundercat and Miguel's vocals fit just so perfectly into this beat-heavy album without feeling like add-on features. But it's the silky voice of Australia's own Parker that really seals the deal on this very fun, very addictive record. — Liza Perkovic

KAYTRANADA — TIMELESS

Black and white photo of Haitian-Canadian producer KAYTRANADA sat on a black leather couch with intense white light overhead

KAYTRANADA's long-awaited third album plays out like a seamless hour-long soundtrack to the best night of your life.

Some of the best voices in the business have leapt at the chance to jump on the Canadian producer's new project, resulting in an enviably cool collection of soulful electro and R&B that builds beautifully on his already impressive catalogue.

Childish Gambino adds a little star power on 'Witchy', Tinashe's syncopated vocal works brilliantly with the various sonic treats KAYTRA slips into the mix on 'More Than a Little Bit', while the steely-yet-alluring PinkPantheress brings the whole affair into the current day on 'Snap My Finger'. There are shades of P-Funk in 'Weird', slinky neo-soul in 'Still', and early-00s-aping R&B on 'Video'.

There's value in just about every individual song on TIMELESS, but the record is altogether more exciting when heard in its entirety. KAYTRANADA is a master of mood and flow, and this record is the best example of his particular style of craftsmanship yet. — Dan Condon

Adrianne Lenker – Bright Future

Out-of-focus portrait of woman wearing white cowboy hat with fingerless leather glove to her right temple

It's an incredible gift to be able to transport a listener so wholly, while connecting them to a tangible world you can see, smell, touch, and feel. Adrianne Lenker does this with every album, and her latest solo work is no different.

Recorded straight to tape, it captures that exact moment, while reminding us of her extraordinary vocal talent and ability to corral a beautiful bunch of collaborators.

That authenticity is also tied to specificity, and if she isn't destroying you in the opening song where she sings of a fateful vet trip then I ask, have you even a pulse?

Her ability to walk the tightrope of raw, minimal songcraft and songs that feel like a family band jam is what sustains her warmth and heart as a songwriter. And the way she can slay with a slight chord change has me gasping.

We are so lucky to be living in the time of Adrianne Lenker. — Zan Rowe

Logic1000 – Mother

Woman stands in dark robe inside a stone mausoleum surrounded by an explosion of white daisies and petals

Not all dance music is made for the dance floor. We're not all equipped with the time, able bodies, energy, or the desire to lose ourselves in a sea of sweaty bodies and pounding beats.

On the debut album from Logic1000 — real name Samantha Poulter — the Sydney-born, Berlin-based producer and DJ has served up an album bursting with influences: from 90s house, to reggaeton, UK garage, pop, soul and the sound of folks like Caribou and Four Tet.

Mother is stunning in its softness. Opener 'From Within' draws you in with a hypnotic beat and dirty bassline, there's the pop hooks of 'Promises' and 'Self To Blame' and the sass of 'Saint Rex', all tinted with nostalgia and melancholy.

Knowing Poulter made this record after becoming a mother for the first time has drawn me in deeper as I've navigated my own way through new motherhood.

In stolen moments alone, I've put my headphones on, cranked the volume, and disappeared into a dancefloor daydream, remembering a person I used to be and finding a new rhythm. — Caitlin Nienaber

Kacey Musgraves – Deeper Well

Brunette woman offers up a crimson clover as she stands in a green field with text: DEEPER WELL

On 2021's Star-Crossed, Kacey Musgraves delivered a post-divorce album under the influence of magic mushrooms.

On her sixth LP, Deeper Well, the country crossover star is off the mushies — and the weed too, for that matter — and searching for a more sustainable source of joy. She finds this in sober self-care and new-age mysticism, sprinkling this sparkling, stripped-back set with references to moon bathing, jade crystals, and tarot readings.

Across 14 tracks, the Nashville star ponders new love, the afterlife, free will and intelligent design, big-picture topics brought down to size by delicate, unfussy arrangements that throwback to classic Laurel Canyon folk-pop, setting Musgraves' crystalline vocals against twinkling keys, gentle guitars and plucked banjos.

But don't mistake these cosmic meditations on life and death for skin-deep woo-woo: in grounding Deeper Well in relatable real-world experience, Kacey Musgraves' Saturn return is as earthed as anything in her catalogue. — Sam Wicks

Jordan Rakei – The Loop

Man in all-white coveralls stands in the distance on a country road with rolling brown green hills and lone tree

Waikato bred, Meanjin/Brisbane fed Jordan Rakei has long been one of the premiere voices to come out of this part of the world. Many projects deep, Jordan just now feels like he is really kicking into gear on his fifth album, The Loop, which is a scary thought.

Maybe it's age and experience that has allowed Jordan to really exert just the right amount of energy and pinpoint exactly what he wants to say? Maybe it's the planets aligning?

We knew the type of journey we were about to embark on when he released first single 'Flowers'; snappy drums, soul-touching pianos, and, of course, those harmonies. Once he followed up with the anthemic 'Freedom', we knew this album was going to be one of the best for 2024.

If you're after melancholy vibrations, 'State of Mind' and 'Hopes and Dreams' is for you. If you're looking to get the blood flowing, then give 'Friend or Foe' and 'Cages' a spin. Regardless of the mood you're in, you'll find something that'll suit it on The Loop. Just like the title suggests, play it over and over and over. — Hau Latukefu

Regurgitator – Invader

Illustration of a golden pyramid floating on dark backgroun among fragmented block text reading: regurgitator invader

Thirty years into Regurgitator's career, it's fair to say most fans like their old stuff better than their new stuff. But the Brisbane trio's 10th album stands shoulder-to-shoulder with their earlier, highly regarded work.

Invader finds a renewed Regurgitator back to doing what they do best: fun, genre-hopping tunes with subversive edges.

'Cocaine Runaway' is pitch-perfect 80s kitsch, Peaches punches up 'This Is Not A Pop Song', while 'Wrong People' (essentially the Ramones re-imagining Pulp's 'Common People') returns to the band's punk rock roots.

They also tap into contemporary hip hop: Bundjalung rapper JK-47 shines on 'Dirty Old Men' while Quan Yeomans himself spits bars over the bombastic title track and symphony-sampling trap joint 'Epic'.

Invader excels when dancing on the fine dividing line between satire and sincerity. Who'd think to put an oddball titled 'Pee Pee Man' next to a pop-rap protest against colonialism? The Gurge, that's who! And we love them for it. — Al Newstead

The Smile – Wall Of Eyes

abstract painting of blue/orange/tan waves, stalagmites, eyes and text: WALL OF EYES THE SMILE

Each song on The Smile's second album Wall of Eyes is packed with ideas, constantly surprising us with cinematic orchestration, woozy synths, and Tom Skinner's endlessly creative and disciplined drumming gluing everything together. A change in producer and a shift to Abbey Road Studios has yielded a more focused and organic flow within the songs and across the record.

'Teleharmonic' and 'Under our Pillows' have unquenchable grooves and unsettling atmospheres. The title track and the widescreen car-crash epic 'Bending Hectic' start evenly enough, before their strings create a sense of vertigo.

Even the album's undeniable highlight, the Beatles-esque pandemic lament to cronyism 'Friend of a Friend', is torn apart by radio transmissions, lopsided horns, and intrusive echoes. It sounds fully sick, in every sense of the phrase.

Radiohead's DNA remains strong, but this fascinating trio are moving forward at rapid pace. — Ryan Egan

Vince Staples – Dark Times

All black tile with hard-to-read dark text reading: DARK TIMES

Vince Staples understands his place in the current music scene. "I'm obviously not an A-tier artist… no one's coming to me for a party record, so I don't feel those pressures," he recently told Apple Music's Zane Lowe. Dark Times sees him improving upon the macabre introspection that fans expect from his decade-long career.

On 'Government Cheese,' he raps, ' Everybody gotta die, only question is it hell or in the sky? ' before the lead synth from 'Blue Suede,' his debut 2014 single, kicks in. 'Little Homies' sounds like an homage to the dancier cuts from one of Staples' closest collaborators, the late great Mac Miller. 'Radio' reflects on his youth, listening to California radio DJs and the music of his childhood.

The album feels like a state of the union, with Vince taking stock of where he's been and hinting at where he's going. Given his consistency thus far, we can no doubt expect another decade of great albums from one of music's strongest pens. — James Brennan

Vampire Weekend – Only God Was Above Us

Photo of defunct new york subway cart with man floating sideways and man reading Daily News paper with ONLY GOD WAS ABOVE US

Frankly, it's almost rude to other bands how good Vampire Weekend still sound after nearly 20 years. If this was cycling, someone would accuse them of doping. But no, their fifth album, Only God Was Above Us, is just that good.

It's everything you love about them: sunshiny Afropop, preppy little guitar lines and classy chamber pop colliding to create one of indie rock's most recognisable sounds. But it's more than that. It's grittier, more honest and more self-reflective than we've heard from them before.

There's clarity in hindsight and, on Only God Was Above Us, Vampire Weekend use it to show us who they are and how they've grown. — Stephen Goodhew

Waxahatchee – Tiger's Blood

brunette stands in blue jeans, open flannel shirt, red bra and 'KC' trucker cap in field beneath neon sign with red pickup truck

Katie Crutchfield again proves she is one of modern Americana's most endearing figures on Tiger's Blood, her sixth album as Waxahatchee , as her distinct voice cuts through her band's stunning instrumentation in a way that puts her evocative storytelling front and centre.

While the band makes a racket on songs like 'Bored', most songs here have an abundance of space. Crutchfield says a lot with few words on songs like 'Ice Cold' and 'Right Back To It', a collaboration with fledgling indie star MJ Lenderman and the album's highlight, and there's a general restraint to these songs that makes them feel often wistful and always considered.

If you're too busy luxuriating in those weeping guitars to pay attention to her lyrics, you'll find yourself catching short, beautiful lines of prose here and there, pulling focus from her expansive music to her ultra-personal reflections.

Crutchfield as both singer and songwriter is one of the true treasures of modern music, and to see her thrive album after album is a privilege. — Dan Condon

Yard Act – Where's My Utopia

illustration of burning skeleton holding phone on a beach with crashing airplane, angry sun, and hand reaching out from waves

Yard Act's second album is a riot of ideas, rhythms, samples, witty lyrics, and catchy hooks that sees the Leeds band consciously break away from the 'post punk' tag of their excellent first album The Overload.

It's an infectiously fun, clever record, with hip hop, disco and dance influences and tons of musical confidence to experiment, honed by relentless touring. Frontman James Smith is a singular talent, a self-deprecating, observant and often hilarious storyteller with a dry wit.

On 'We Make Hits', he gives voice to the contradictions of his new-found fame, 'Dream Job' is a 70s-flavoured disco punk anthem for the dance floor, and 'Down by the Stream' is honest and reflective.

Recruiting producer Remi Kabata Jr from Gorillaz was an inspired move in evolving their sound. There's still lots of jagged guitars and elastic basslines, but the additional layered instrumentation suits them. It's a brilliant leap forward from a band with a lot more to give. — Karen Leng
