Visiting the Amazon Jungle had been on our bucket list for quite some time, so after spending the best 2 days in Lima , we arranged a side trip to the Amazon Jungle Peru.

The Best Time to Go

Exploring the Amazon Rainforest is a year-round possibility, given its consistent weather conditions throughout the seasons. Anticipate warm, rainy, and humid weather, regardless of the time of year.

The wet season spans from January to June, featuring temperatures ranging from 23 to 30ºC (73 to 86ºF). Daily showers are a common occurrence, sometimes with substantial intensity.

However, it’s important to note that the higher humidity during this period results in more mosquitoes.

The dry season, from July to December, includes the latter half of the year. During this period, temperatures average around 26 to 40ºC (78 to 104ºF). While there is less rain, occasional heavy showers can still occur. Reduced rainfall results in a drier atmosphere in the jungle and lower river levels. 

This creates advantageous conditions for exploration on foot and provides an excellent chance to spot caimans as they contend for diminished food supplies.

The most popular time to visit the Amazon is in July and August. The height of water in the jungle is reasonable, and you have a higher chance of spotting more wildlife.

Two notable areas in the Peruvian Amazon jungle are popular for ecotourism and wildlife experiences.

When planning your journey, there’s no rule on choosing the best area of the Amazon to visit, but you should consider your itinerary.

For instance, diverting to Iquitos might be impractical if you travel to Cusco or Lima. Instead, destinations like Manu National Park or Puerto Maldonado, the entry point to the Amazon rainforest, are closer and logistically make sense.

You can book a flight to Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado from Lima or Cusco. You can also take a bus from Cusco to reach these cities to begin your Amazon Jungle experience; this is the most affordable option.

We’d recommend setting aside a minimum of three days to visit the Amazon Jungle in Peru.

We usually travel independently and book logistics as we go; however, after crunching numbers and working out the logistics of getting around in the Amazon Jungle in Peru, we found that it was much easier and more economical for us to book a packaged tour.

There are many tour operators to choose from online. After comparing many options, we decided to book this 3 Day/2 Night Amazon Jungle trip as it’s a Peruvian-owned company with excellent reviews from past guests.

Where To Stay

The overall accommodation style in the Amazon Jungle Peru is typically jungle lodges in various regions. 

The choice is up to you whether you opt for a remarkably luxurious or more basic option. You can expect comfortable accommodations in these lodges, usually in twin-share or double cabins with attached ensuite bathrooms.

It’s important to remember that your lodge is in a remote location, so electricity may only be available for specific hours during the day. This was the case with our lodge, so whenever electricity was available, take the opportunity to charge your phone, cameras etc.

The rooms have mosquito nets and fans to ensure a cool and protected night’s sleep.

You may choose a bungalow accommodation with shared bathroom facilities for those travelling on a budget.

Most of the lodges are within a 1-1.5 hour boat ride from Puerto Maldonado Boat Pier.

Accommodation providers usually offer all-inclusive packages that include transfers from Puerto Maldonado airport, accommodation, all meals, and several daily excursions.

Numerous jungle lodges are situated along the river, ranging from inexpensive ones with very basic amenities to more stylish lodges with comfortable bungalows.

MID-RANGE: Amazon Planet – A true ecolodge within a protected area surrounded by rainforest and wild animals in their natural habitat. Free airport transfers, river transfers, all meals are included. Jungle excursions and adventure activities in the area such as treking, biking, fishing, and boat rides can be arranged.

Full program itineraries are available for an add-on rate. The rooms in Amazon Planet feature private bathrooms and terraces. Breakfast is served daily. The on-site restaurant offers a daily menu and can cater to special diets upon request.

The Amazon jungle in Peru is like a vast garden with many plants. You’ll find towering trees, like the Ceiba and Kapok, that stand really tall. Some trees, like the rubber tree, have been essential for making rubber.

There are plants that people have used for medicine for a long time, like the Cinchona tree, which helps treat malaria, and the Cat’s Claw, which indigenous communities have used traditionally.

On the trees, you’ll see colourful plants called bromeliads and orchids. Palms, like the Açaí and Assai, give us tasty fruits.

Vines and climbers, such as the vanilla orchid and passionflower, make the forest look even more beautiful. All these plants create a rich and amazing environment in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest.

The most commonly seen animals in the Amazon jungle are monkeys (squirrel monkeys and howler monkeys), caimans, sloths, frogs, tarantulas, piranhas, and birds such as herons, and the hoatzin (stink bird).

If you’re fortunate, you may see the endangered giant otter.

We recommend packing some lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing, and you will need a waterproof jacket (or poncho ); plus, it’s worth considering waterproof pants . 

TIP: Dress in light, neutral colours to avoid mosquitoes.

How to Visit the Amazon in Peru: Ultimate Guide for 2024

Are you planning your trip to the Amazon in Peru? Wondering how to visit and where to go?

If you only have one chance to experience the Amazon rainforest, you want to do it right. But there’s a lot to figure out, and it can be overwhelming.

That’s where I come in.

I spent a week exploring the Peruvian Amazon – this was after I visited (and camped in) the Bolivian Amazon . I had the full Amazon experience, from meeting the local communities that call the Amazon home to seeing the diverse wildlife that lives in its forests and rivers.

I’m now sharing everything I learned in this detailed guide on how to visit the Amazon in Peru. It covers what you need to know and tips for planning your adventure.

Where to see the Amazon in Peru

There are a few places where you can visit the Amazon.

• Iquitos: This is the best place to see the Amazon in Peru as you’ll experience nature, wildlife, and culture. Located northeast of the country, Iquitos is only accessible by boat or air.
• Manu National Park: This is part of the southern Amazon basin and is accessible from Cusco. It’s a full-day journey to get to, but you’ll get a wilder experience here.
• Tambopata National Reserve: This is a convenient option if you visit Cusco and only have a few extra days to see the Amazon. You’ll fly into Puerto Maldonado and take a short ride to your jungle lodge.

If I had to choose the best place to visit the Amazon in Peru, it’s Iquitos. But logistically, it can be difficult to get to if you’re coming from Cusco. There are no direct flights, and you’ll have to transit in Lima first.

This is why many people visit either Tambopata National Reserve or Manu National Park, both of which are easier (and cheaper) to get to from Cusco.

Best time to visit the Peruvian Amazon

There is a striking contrast between the dry and wet seasons in the Amazon. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from May to October.

During the dry season (between May and October), the conditions are ideal for trekking through the jungle. You’ll also be able to explore the river by boat.

However, just because it’s the dry season doesn’t mean it won’t rain. It is the Amazon Rainforest, after all! Expect the occasional rain shower, but nothing like you’d experience during the wet season.

I visited the Peruvian Amazon in July and highly recommend this time of year. From my experience, it was warm and slightly humid, but nothing like you would find during the wet season.

In the rainy season (December to April), you can expect a lot more mosquitos, higher levels of humidity, and daily rain showers.

The water levels are much higher, and many trails are underwater. This means you won’t do as much trekking through the jungle. Instead, you’ll do more boat-based activities.

Avoid visiting the Peruvian Amazon Jungle in January, February, and March if possible. These are the rainiest months. Mosquitos are also at their peak during this time which can be unpleasant.

How to get to the Amazon

There are three main entry points to the Amazon in Peru: Iquitos (in the northern part of the country). Or Manu National Park and Tambopata National Reserve ( in the southern part).

Note: If it’s the Amazon River you want to see, you’ll need to go north to Iquitos. While Manu National Park and Tambopata National Reserve are part of the Amazon Rainforest, they do not have the Amazon River flowing through them.

• Best from: Lima
• Time recommended: 4 to 6 days

Iquitos is the primary gateway to the Amazon in Peru. It’s the largest city in the world that cannot be reached by road; the only access is by air or boat on the Amazon River.

There’s a hive of activity here and the city is where you’ll find the best Amazon tours. These tours depart from Iquitos, and you’ll drive by car (or go by boat) for a few hours before reaching one of the many smaller villages that line the banks of the Amazon River.

Here, you’ll stay in jungle lodges surrounded by local communities completely detached from the outside world. This offers a unique perspective on daily life in the Amazon – I was fascinated by it all.

Iquitos is also the best place to visit if you want to do an Amazon River cruise in Peru. There are various options to choose from, but the luxury cruises are quite something!

How to get to Iquitos

There are daily flights from Lima to Iquitos with Sky Airline or Latam. This 2-hour flight is the best and cheapest way to get here.

Unfortunately, there are no direct flights from Cusco to Iquitos. If you’re coming from Cusco (which is what I did), then you’ll need to fly to Lima first and catch another flight to Iquitos.

2. Manu National Park

• Best from: Cusco

Manu National Park is a great place to visit the Amazon in Peru if you’re looking for a remote experience in the jungle.

While it’s accessible from Cusco, it is pretty challenging to get to! The journey takes a full day and involves a car and boat ride, but this travel day is an experience in itself.

The beauty of visiting Manu National Park is just how deep into the jungle you’ll go. The wildlife is magnificent here and ideal for travelers looking for a wilder experience.

Unfortunately, you won’t see the same sort of community presence or culture as you would find in Iquitos. But if you’re looking to go completely off the beaten track and explore the jungle, this is an excellent option.

You’ll also need more time in Manu National Park than in Tambopata National Park. This is due to how long it takes to reach the jungle from Cusco.

How to get to Manu National Park

The easiest way to get to Manu National Park is via bus from Cusco, followed by a boat ride up the river. This is a long journey that will take a full day.

Alternatively, you can fly from Cusco (or Lima) to Puerto Maldonado. From there, you’ll need to go by boat to access Manu National Park.

3. Reserva Nacional Tambopata

• Best from: Cusco (will need to fly into Puerto Maldonado)
• Time recommended: 2 to 3 days

Tambopata National Park forms part of the southern Peruvian Amazon. It’s located near the town of Puerto Maldonado, which is a quick flight from Cusco.

Puerto Maldonado is a small town and not as chaotic and busy as Iquitos.

Tambopata National Park is a great option for those with less time to see the jungle, as the national park is next to Puerto Maldonado. This means you won’t need to spend a whole day driving or going by boat to your jungle lodge.

You can experience a lot of the jungle here, from birdwatching to piranha fishing and more.

How to get to Reserva Nacional Tambopata

To get to Reserva Nacional Tambopata, you’ll need to take a 1-hour flight from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado. From here, you’ll drive or go by boat to your jungle lodge, about an hour or two away.

How to plan your Amazon tour in Peru

When planning a trip to the Amazon in Peru, you’ll need to find a tour operator or jungle lodge that will take care of your entire experience. It will be all-inclusive of accommodation, meals, transport, and activities for the duration of your stay.

This is why it’s so important to ensure you book with a reliable and ethical company.

Booking an Amazon tour

I visited the Peruvian Amazon from Iquitos and booked with Libertad Jungle Lodge based on the numerous positive reviews here . They were fantastic, and I highly recommend them. No, this was not a sponsored trip, and they did not know I was a travel blogger.

Libertad Jungle Lodge is about a 4-hour journey from Iquitos and is owned and managed by the local community.

I paid 720 USD for a 4-day / 3-night tour for two people (360 USD each).

This included pick up from Iquitos, all meals (which were delicious), a basic private room with an ensuite (cold shower), and all activities. We also had a private guide who was born and raised in the Libertad Village.

The lodge itself was a rustic set-up but extremely comfortable.

Activities on the Peru Amazon

There are various things to do in the Amazon, and your tour operator/jungle lodge will arrange them all for you.

These night walks are amazing for seeing all the creatures that come alive after dark. Tarantulas and other spiders, bats, and exotic frogs. It’s scary but it’s incredible!

I loved the boat trips along the Amazon River. You’ll go in a small wooden boat and spot birds, sloths, caimans and even pink dolphins.

Local markets

If you’re visiting the Amazon from Iquitos, I highly recommend doing a walk-through of the Belen Market. Go with your tour guide so that he can point out all the vegetables, meat, and fish. This will give you a unique perspective on how the Amazon economy works and what life is like for the local people.

Jungle trekking

This is a part of most Amazon itineraries and allows you to go deeper into the jungle to see unique plants and trees and learn more about their medicinal value. You’ll also spot birds, spiders, mushrooms, monkeys and more.

Jungle camping

I went camping in the Amazon jungle, and wow, it was quite the experience! I recommend you do it for at least one night. Yes, it’s rough! But it’s something I’ll never forget.

Other activities

There are many other activities to do in the Amazon, including Piranha fishing, sunset trips, and canoeing.

Tambopata National Reserve, located in the southeastern part of Peru, is an area renowned for its breathtaking biodiversity and stunning natural landscapes. This area is where the Madre de Dios River intersects with the Tambopata River.

Tambopata is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, housing an incredible variety of flora and fauna. It’s home to 630 bird species, including the iconic macaws, as well as 160  mammals like jaguars, capybaras, peccaries and several monkey species. You can also find over 100 reptile species, 179 species of fish and 1200 butterfly species. 

The area is inhabited by several indigenous communities who maintain a deep connection with the land and its resources, living in harmony with the rainforest. Visitors to Tambopata have the opportunity to learn about these communities’ traditions, knowledge, and  sustainable practices .

Why Visit Tambopata?

This is the best place to see the Amazon in Peru for many reasons. I honestly thought it was one of the best areas of Amazon jungle to visit.

Biodiversity : The Amazon is home to an incredible array of wildlife, including jaguars, giant river otters, macaws, monkeys, and numerous amphibians and reptiles. It’s also known for its extraordinary insect diversity, including colorful butterflies.

Rainforests : The area boasts extensive, pristine rainforests that are vital for maintaining the health of the Amazon ecosystem. Visitors can explore these lush jungles on guided hikes and nature walks.

Birdwatching : Tambopata is a paradise for birdwatchers, with over 600 species of birds recorded in the region. It’s particularly famous for its large macaw clay licks, where these colorful parrots gather to feed on clay.

River Adventures : The Tambopata River offers opportunities for river excursions, canoeing, and wildlife spotting. You can also take boat tours to explore the waterways and spot riverine species.

The best time to visit the Amazon in Peru, specifically Tambopata, is during the dry season, which runs from May to September. This period offers more stable weather conditions with less rainfall, making it easier to explore the rainforest, go on wildlife excursions, and enjoy outdoor activities. Additionally, the lower water levels in the rivers make it ideal for wildlife spotting. Daytime highs can go down to 50°F (9°C) and the nighttime lows to 43°F (5°C).

The Amazon in Peru is a year-round destination, and the wet season (from November to March) has its own unique appeal, as it brings lush, vibrant greenery and the opportunity to witness some aquatic species more easily. Around 80% of the annual average of rainfall occurs during this season.

Ultimately, the best time for visiting the Amazon in Peru depends on your preferences, but the dry season is generally recommended for a more comfortable and wildlife-rich experience.

How to Visit the Amazon in Peru (south)

Before you embark on your rainforest adventure, you’ll need to reach Puerto Maldonado, a vibrant town in southeastern Peru that serves as the gateway to the Amazon. Most travelers choose to  fly into Jorge Chavez International Airport  in Lima, the capital of Peru, and then take a  connecting flight to Puerto Maldonado . The journey offers breathtaking aerial views of the Andes mountains as they give way to the Amazon basin.

All   lodges in the Amazon  provide transportation by either van or bus and then by boat to their remote jungle location. It definitely adds to the experience when you travel on the river. It was a very cool experience for me when I was visiting the Amazon in Peru.

Choosing the Right Amazon Tour

Visiting the Amazon in Peru offers a myriad of exhilarating experiences, with various types of tours to choose from. Jungle lodges provide an immersive experience, allowing you to stay deep within the rainforest and explore its rich biodiversity. River cruises offer a unique perspective as you navigate the winding waterways, providing opportunities for wildlife sightings and relaxation. If you’re seeking a more adventurous excursion, consider adventure tours, which often include activities like hiking, kayaking, and canopy walks, allowing you to delve deeper into the jungle’s secrets.

If possible, visiting more than one lodge will enable you to experience different areas of the Amazon. The further you go from Puerto Maldonado, the more remote it gets. This really is the best place to see the Amazon in Peru. You will not be disappointed, I promise!

The Adventure Down the River

Any way you look at it, you will travel down the Tambopata river by boat. Your rainforest expedition truly begins when you journey deep into the heart of the Amazon. The Tambopata River, which snakes its way through the rainforest, is a very neat adventure. You can expect to navigate through beautiful scenery, spotting exotic birds and perhaps even an elusive jaguar if you’re lucky. Keep your camera ready, as opportunities for wildlife and  bird photography  can be anywhere.

Accommodations

There are quite a few different lodges in Tambopata that you could choose. You can read about some of the  best Amazon lodges in Peru , but I will provide a brief summary here of my two favorite lodges that I personally experienced and thought they were the best places to see the Amazon in Peru.

Refugio Amazonas

If you are short on time or do not want to venture too far into the Amazon, then you can find shorter options to stay only at  Refugio Amazonas.

The Refugio Amazonas Eco-lodge is part of the  Wired Amazon  program allowing for the promotion of sustainability through its collection of science projects. You can read more about this lodge in the post about the  best Amazon lodges .

This lodge has an open wall facing the Amazon rainforest, limited electricity at certain times of the day, and provides eco-friendly toiletries. One of the best things about this hotel is being able to go up a 25 meter canopy tour. The view from the top is amazing! I would go here if only for that view.

Tambopata Research Center (TRC)

If you want a more amazing experience, you can travel further into the dense Amazon jungle, and end up at the  Tambopata Research Center  (TRC), which is one of the most remote lodges in South America. It was very cool to stay here – especially being so far away from civilization.

This lodge also has an open wall to the Amazon rainforest. It was a creepy yet cool experience!

You have the ability to explore the trails in the area, learn about the Macaws and see the Colorado and Chunco Clay licks and so many more activities to truly connect with nature. There are so many activities you can do here.

What to Expect When You Visit the Amazon in Peru

Now that you’ve arrived at your accommodations, let’s explore the incredible experiences waiting for you in the Peruvian Rainforest:

Wildlife Encounters

The Amazon is a treasure trove of wildlife, and you’ll have numerous opportunities to spot fascinating creatures. Keep an eye out for iconic species like macaws, toucans, sloths, and capybaras. Guided nature walks and night hikes will bring you face to face with the rainforest’s nocturnal inhabitants, including tree frogs, tarantulas, and brilliantly colored insects.

Canopy Walks

One of the highlights of your journey will undoubtedly be the canopy walks. Suspended high above the forest floor, these walkways provide a unique perspective on the rainforest’s diverse flora and fauna. Stroll amidst the treetops and witness the forest from a bird’s-eye view.

Nighttime Symphony

As day fades into night, the rainforest transforms into a different world. The jungle comes alive with the sounds of nocturnal creatures, from the haunting calls of night monkeys to the chirping of insects. Don’t forget to stargaze; the clear, unpolluted skies of the Amazon reveal a dazzling celestial display.

When I stayed at the TRC, I woke up in the middle of the night to hearing a ‘crunching’ of leaves outside my ‘room’. I had no idea what it was, but I wasn’t going to look and find out what it was!

River Expeditions

Exploring the waterways of the Amazon is an adventure in itself. Glide through narrow tributaries on small boats, searching for caimans, river otters, and the rare pink river dolphins. You can also partake in a sunset cruise to truly enjoy the beauty of the Amazon.

What Should You Bring To The Amazon?

Travel Insurance:  Ensure your insurance includes cancellation, curtailment, damage/theft/loss of luggage and medical coverage. I recommend  SafetyWing Travel Insurance  for all your needs.

Currency:  Most lodges accept credit cards for payments of services and goods. Bring small denominations of cash for gratuities. Tipping is not compulsory but is always suggested if you receive good service.

Travel Documents:  All visitors to Peru must have a passport that is valid or at least 6 months from the date they will be leaving the country. NOTE: Travel visas are not required for residents of Canada, USA, UK and New Zealand.

Do I Need to Get Vaccinated?

While there are no required vaccinations for travel to Peru, the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has the following recommendations:

Hepatitis A : Vaccination is recommended to all travelers to Peru.

Hepatitis B : Vaccination recommended to all travelers to Peru, especially those who may have exposure to blood or body fluids through the giving or receiving of medical care, drug injections, tattooing, or sexual contact with the local population.

Typhoid Fever : Vaccination is recommended to all travelers to tropical South America especially those who may be staying in rural areas where exposure through food or water could occur.

Yellow Fever : Vaccination is highly recommended for travel to the Amazon. The shot should be given at least 10 days before your arrival and at 10-year intervals if you decide to stay.

Rabies : Vaccination is ONLY recommended to travelers with an increased risk of exposure.

1. puerto maldonado.

Madre de Dios (Mother of God) is a political region located in the south Peruvian area. This Peruvian department is the most important region in the south of the Amazon in Peru. It has a political capital department called Puerto Maldonado.

As it refers to its name, Puerto Maldonado is an important Amazon port for adventurers and nature lovers. Some of the most essential activities, such as trekking through the jungle, bird watching, and canoe riding, start in this city.

Also, Puerto Maldonado is so close to Cusco and Machu Picchu. Fantastic nature parks and reserves, like Manu and Tambopata, surround Puerto Maldonado. Therefore, the tours in Puerto Maldonado can represent the beginning of a great adventure in the Peruvian Jungle.

2. Manu National Park

The Manu is the most famous national park in the country. The park has the most incredible biodiversity in south Peru, with more than 1.7 million hectares. In addition, there are three zones that you must know about before arranging any tour there.

3. Tambopata National Reserve

The Tambopata region is one of the best refuges for appreciating animals in their natural habitat. You can enjoy excursions in places like Sandoval Lake, Chuncho clay lick, and much more . Tambopata receives many more tourists than the Manu region. Because trips to Manu Park require much more organization and reservations in advance.

Despite this, tourists can visit both Manu and Tambopata throughout the year. The National Reserve has more than 1,000 square miles of rainforest. Therefore, you can find 595 species of bird and more than 1,200 species of butterflies, for example .

You can also see the birds in Tambopata , one of its principal attractions. Several colors of macaws and parrots arrive at the clay licks to feed on mineral salts every morning . Their blather and singing put the melody in the jungle at this time of the morning. Simply Amazing!

4. Oxapampa

The Jungle Center in Peru is a zone for relaxation and vacation for Limeños or Capitalinos. People who live in Lima take their cars to the cities in the jungle center. Therefore, Oxapampa receives more national tourists than Puerto Maldonado or Iquitos (Cities with more foreign visitors).

The place is famous for hosting many German and Austrian migrants since 1857. They settled, especially in Pozuzo town. There, you can see houses in the Tyrol architectural style. Blondy native people live there, descendants of German and Austrian inhabitants, with blue eyes and tall.

All of them dressed in traditional customs and offered their typical drink, the Pozuzo beer . Now, the German descendants show their traditions, lifestyles, and coffee fields, among other things, to all visitors. By the way, they are great organic coffee producers!

Besides them, you’ll enjoy waterfalls, trekking routes, and natural pools in the middle of the jungle! Also, you will find first-level tourist services like lodges, hotels, and tours inter alia . All of them are cheaper for enjoying tourism than Tambopata National Reserve , Manu, or Iquitos. The last ones usually receive more foreign tourists.

5. Chachapoyas

Iquitos is in the north of Peru. It borders Brazil in the southeast and Colombia in the northeast. It also has frontiers with Ecuador in the northwest and San Martin in the southwest. In addition, Iquitos is the most famous Jungle city on the Amazon in Peru.

Peruvians know it as the largest city in the world, unreachable by road. Rugged and wild territory surrounds the city, making building roads or land access impossible . However, the flights and the riverboats offer two forms to get there.

The majority of flights that depart from Lima have high costs. However, you can find promotional flights occasionally to get there. The city reached its maximum splendor In the early 20th century. At this time, many European people came to Iquitos to take advantage of the rubber boom.

Of course, the rubber fiber didn’t last long, and they abandoned the city. After abandonment, they left houses his house of European architecture style. Thus, visitors can appreciate many things in the Historical Center of Iquitos.

7. Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is the second-largest Protective area in Peru, with more than 20,000 square kilometers. The National Reserve is only smaller than the Nazca Ridge Protective area. The national reserve is in the south of Iquitos, with a distance of 308 kilometers.

Its vast territory hosts a great variety of biodiversity; more than 1000 animal species and 965 types of plants. All these characteristics made Pacaya Samiria a perfect place to spend a relaxing vacation in the north Jungle.

Even more, the activities that you can do there are more important like taking a cruise by the Marañon . This river is the most important tributary of the Amazon River in this part of the Loreto Region.

Pacaya Samiria has many options for different pleasures, such as seeing a beautiful sunset in El Dorado Lake. Or taking a walk by the border of Yanta Lake. In another sense , you can pay attention to your guide about the different types of plants that are there . Or take a walk at night through the jungle of Pacaya Samiria.

782,880 square kilometers is the total area of the Amazon in Peru. This means more than 550 hectares of biodiversity in Peru . When we say that Peru is a “megadiverse” country, we don’t lie. Peru is the first country in the diversity of diurnal butterflies, with 4,441 species.

Peru is also the third one in bird species, with more than 1,857 species. Without mention, it has 623 species of amphibians. Of course, Peru is the sixth country in the diversity of reptiles, with 469 species. And it is the fourth country is in mammal type (559 species).

All these statistics make Peru a “mega diversity” treasure in the world. If all these data are not enough, we have something else to say! More than 19,147 species of plants make up the extraordinary flora diversity in the Peruvian Amazon . Among them, 7,590 of them are endemic!

Of course, in the different natural landscapes of the Amazon, you can meet numerous endemic Amazon rainforest animals . Pink dolphins are one of the animals that you should know. They accompany the boats along the Amazon River, jumping over the water, an unforgettable spectacle . Some tours have the option to swim between them.

While other places offer tours of the clay licks, where hundreds of macaws and parrots congregate. You will witness a spectacle of color and sounds . Best time to visit the Amazon in Peru

This location has a tropical climate, which means the Peruvian Amazon has two different seasons during the year: the Dry Season and the Rainy Season.

1. Dry Season

The Dry season ranges from May to October. Although the climate is humid and it presents unusually light showers. However, if you visit the jungle this season, you will find clear skies, strong sunshine, and beautiful sunsets.

2. Rainy Season

The heavy rains, some thunder, and warm conditions are the characteristics of the Rainy season. This period goes from November to March. If you don’t want to get dirty with mud or support annoying mosquitos, we recommend choosing the Dry season. This is the best time to visit Peru and the stunning Amazon area.

How to get to Amazon in Peru

The Amazon jungle covers a vast area of Peruvian territory. Everyone can think how easy it can be to reach the Peruvian Amazon, but it is not. The wild and dense nature of the area made it an almost inaccessible area for many years.

Thanks to technology and better construction techniques, we now have good highways that lead to the amazing Peruvian jungle.

If you are in the south of Peru, probably in Cusco, you can take buses directly to Puerto Maldonado. This city is the main entrance to Manu National Park and Tambopata National Reserve.

You can choose among many bus companies at reasonable prices to get Amazon tours from Cusco . The bus trip lasts approximately 05 hours from the Imperial City. Even more, all buses depart from the Cusco land terminal, Via de Evitamiento 429 Avenue.

There are main bus lines like Cruz del Sur, Civa, Tepsa, and Movil Tours, among others. Of course, the cost usually is around $25 per person.

If you happen to be in Lima, you have even more options. But with the same reliable and well-known bus companies previously mentioned.

Each one has its own bus terminal in the Capital. In addition, the trip to Oxapampa or Tingo Maria is a shorter 3-hour trip. Since these cities are the closest jungle cities to Lima. Also, the costs are similar to the south bus companies.

2. By Plane

Puerto Maldonado has its own airport and receives direct flights from Lima everyday and flights from Cusco twice a week . The airlines that arrive in the city of South Jungle are LATAM and Sky Airlines. The cost is usually around $80 per person.

In the case of the Central Jungle, the airport in Pucallpa receives the main number of flights from Lima. There, airlines distribute many connecting flights to Tingo Maria Aerodrome . From this point, the visitors can get faster in Oxapampa. The cost of flights is around $80 to $90.

In the case of Loreto, the northernmost jungle city, the flights are constant from Lima. The reason is that Loreto doesn’t have terrestrial access. Even its airport receives international flights from Colombia, Panama, Brazil, and Central America. The flight cost from the Peruvian capital is around $90 to $100.

What activities to do in the Peruvian Amazon

These are just a few suggestions to bear in mind. But there are many other fabulous things that you can see and enjoy on your jungle adventure. Take the time to search for the best-guided tour offering what you want to see in the time frame you have available.

1. Shamanic rituals in the jungle

Numerous indigenous groups and tour companies provide a variety of shamanic ceremonies. Of course, these activities are attractive for entering the Peruvian Amazon. In the Amazon, shamanism was a practice passed down for generations.

Nowadays, the natives consider this practice a community service. Of course, this community service consists of seeking help for both emotional and physical ailments. We do not necessarily refer to Ayahuasca rituals. But you can find cleanings, plant diets, Wachuma, and many more local rituals.

The shamans offer different ceremonies and cleansing rituals that also include the use of the famous Ayahuasca . Although these ceremonies are not for everyone, there are also some more innocuous ceremonies and rituals.

2. Tacacho with Cecina and Chorizo

Emblematic dish of the Peruvian jungle. The cooks fry the green bananas, then pound and mix them with lard. This preparation makes this dish extraordinary.

3. Patarashca

By the way, the Bijao is a traditional plan of the Amazon. After, they cooked this wrapping on charcoal. Without a doubt, Patarashca is a famous Amazon dish.

4. Purtumute

Purtumute is a traditional stew of the Amazon in Peru. Seasoned white and black beans with corn kernels and coriander intervene in its preparation . In some places, pine nuts accompany the dish.

5. Inchicapi of Gallina with Mani

Exquisite Amazon soup with boiled free-range hen (The chicken must be from free-range), blended or ground peanuts, corn, yucca, and coriander. A dish that will surprise you with a pleasant flavor.

6. Drinks of Peruvian Amazon

There are many different drinks; some of them are Chapos. These are drinks that include ripe bananas. The barman boils these bananas after smoothing them with milk and sugar to taste. Aguajina is a refreshing drink with Aguaje, a native fruit north of the Peruvian Amazon.

The locals dilute it in water and mix it with sugar. They also prepare a traditional drink, Massato. They ferment yucca by letting it rest for several days, converting its starch into sugar.

Also, we want to give you some recommendations to consider before taking a flight to Amazon in Peru.

• When packing for your tour, there is much to consider. Please remember to bring your lightweight, breathable, quick-drying clothing. Lightweight is best to bring long sleeves and long pants to protect yourself from the insects that will bite. Also, remember that you are in the jungle.
• Good shoes are essential for jungle hikes, as are a hat, a water bottle, mosquito repellant, sunscreen, and wet wipes. A lightweight backpack is also handy for this purpose.
• When in the jungle, there is no way to get money from the bank. So, before you get there, make sure you have enough cash for your jungle journey. The lodges will provide all your meals, but you will need to buy extra snacks and drinks in their mini-markets. So, you might want to consider taking some money for that excursion.
• Vaccinating is an excellent idea if you plan to visit the Amazon. Depending on your nationality, you will need to check the required vaccination . Talk also with your home GP about the requirements for re-entering your home country after being in the jungle.
• Many pesky insects and mosquitos exist in the Peruvian Amazon. Their bites can leave large red welts and cause Dengue and Zika. Thus, you must use repellents that contain DEET to prevent bites. Also, make sure to cover your entire body.
• Exploring the jungle during the dry season , from May to October, will be recommendable. Between these months, you can avoid the heavy rains. But remember, the rainforest is always warm, and the humidity is so high.

Peru makes claim to being the most biodiverse, well protected & easily accessible part of this vast, lifegiving forest. If you have ever wanted to see it for yourself, then here I provide you with everything you need to know before visiting the Amazon in Peru.”

In 2017 I spent 2 months exploring the mystical beauty of South America. I had already been blown away by Argentina & Bolivia before my final destination, Peru . Here, I decided to take a tour & opted for G Adventures Absolute Peru . This gave me everything I needed from this magical country, including hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu , the wonders of Lake Titicaca , epic Colca Canyon & the mysterious Nazca Lines. In addition one of my highlights was to visit the legendary Amazon Rainforest.

The duration of my Amazon rainforest trip was 3 days/2 nights in which time I had the opportunity to annoy tarantulas, get too close to poisonous frogs, feed piranhas, get a tribal makeover & be alone in the dark in the world’s biggest rainforest. 10 Essential Things to Know Before Visiting the Amazon in Peru

Why is the amazon rainforest important.

The Amazon Jungle is known as the “Lungs of the World” as it produces over 20% of the earth’s oxygen. The Amazon Basin spreads across 40% of the landmass of South America. That’s over half of Brazil & Columbia along with most of Ecuador , Bolivia & Peru . The start of the basin is in southern Peru which also has some of the easier access points to this vast rainforest.

The rainforest in Peru covers 2/3 of the country. It contains the most biodiverse regions on the planet & of the whole of the Amazon basin. In addition, the Peruvian part is the best protected.

It is home to more than half of the estimated 10 million species of animal, plant & insect on the planet. In addition, they believe that 250,000 people live native in the jungle. There may be around 50 tribes who have never had contact with the outside world.”

If that doesn’t convince you that visiting the Amazon in Peru is worth the effort, then I don’t know what will!

Where to go?

The most accessible starting point is to head south-east to Puerto Maldonado where, like me, you will find yourself on the doorstep of the Tambopata Nature Reserve.

If you have just been in Cusco for the sights of iconic Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu , then Manu maybe your best option. The Pacaya-Samiria National Park there is home to the greatest biodiversity in the rainforest.

Finally, if you choose to head north, you are able to access the deep recesses of the jungle via Iquitos, the world’s largest city that cannot be reached by road.

When to go?

You are planning on visiting a rainforest, so expect any time to be hot, humid & most importantly wet! The dry season is the best time to visit which runs between April – October. Ideally, time your trip to coincide with the cooler months of May, June & July. However, in Pacaya-Samiria National Park, the drier months can be unpleasant as there are fewer accessible animals & a lot of biting insects. Mosquitos are rife everywhere so make sure you take insect repellent with at least 50% DEET & keep covered up, whenever you decide to visit.

November to March marks the wet season & as such, expect a lot of rain! The river will swell, making it the perfect time to see waterfalls but hiking will be a challenge & wildlife spotting more difficult on foot.

For December to March visits, it’s easier to explore by boat where you will be undercover. In addition, the smaller tributaries will be easier to navigate, taking you deeper into the forest & you will have access to a more concentrated area of mammals.”

How long should you go to the Amazon in Peru for?

For the effort, it takes to get there & the huge diversity of flora & fauna, I would recommend at least 3 days/2 nights. Remember that this is nature & nothing is guaranteed. The longer you stay, the greater variety of wildlife you are likely to find. In addition, on a longer trip, you will be able to travel further into the jungle & access more remote areas. However, the length of your stay will also impact the price you pay.

Can you visit the Amazon in Peru on a budget?

This will depend on which area you decide to visit. Generally, the more remote you go, the more expensive. If you book before leaving home, you may pay more. Waiting until you are in Lima or Cusco will allow lots of choices & you could get better deals. If you have plenty of time & like to be more last minute, then book in the town on arrival. You will have a choice of agents & lodges but for a lower price. If budgets are tight you may also be able to strike a bargain. You could opt to just do a day trip or two but that will not allow you to access the deeper areas of the rainforest.

How to get to the Amazon in Peru?

Of course, this will depend on which region you choose to visit.

For Puerto Maldonado, you can fly from Lima & Cusco. If you fancy a long journey, there is also a 10-hour bus option from Cusco.

For Manu, the only real choice is to take a bus from Lima (8 hours).

Iquitos is the world’s largest city which cannot be reached by road. Your best option is to fly from Lima or take a boat along the river.

What wildlife can you see?

In an area renowned for its unbelievable biodiversity, you cannot fail to be blown away by the unique wildlife when visiting the Amazon in Peru. As with any safari, however, nothing is guaranteed so if there is something very specific you would like to see then prepare to be disappointed.

In terms of mammals, then you could be lucky & spot a jaguar or puma, anteater or tapir, sloth or coati. Then there is the capybara, the world’s largest rodent.

The giant river otters are as endangered as the tiger or giant panda. There may be only 1000 – 5000 of these left in the world so a sighting would be incredibly lucky. For monkey lovers keep your eyes peeled for spider & howler monkeys among others.”

A river cruise can also give you the opportunity to spot the unique pink river dolphins (Iquitos area), manatees, caiman, crocodiles, anaconda & river turtles. When I visited, we even fed piranhas…just biscuits though, you’ll be pleased to hear!

Birdlife is colourful & equally diverse, with 7 species of macaw, hummingbirds, hawk & harpy eagle as well as the ominous vultures. In addition are some of the strangest looking birds such as the bright orange Andean Cock-of-the-Rock (Peru’s national bird) & hoatzin, with its bright blue face & distinct head crest.

And then there are the enormous snails, cicada, tarantulas (& smaller, less furry spiders) & ants, not to mention fascinating fungi, enormous trees & endless plant species.

Activities in the Amazon Rainforest

These would be my recommendations to ensure you include on any Amazon Rainforest trip:

Cruising along this iconic river will be part of any visit to the rainforest & one of the best places to spot many of the mammals. However, it’s not just the river but there are numerous Oxbow Lakes that also pepper the landscape. These are where the river bends have been cut off to form lakes. On my visit, we failed to find an anaconda but fed piranhas & were treated to sightings of the hoatzin, toucans & very friendly butterflies!

Staying in a lodge gives you the chance to explore the rainforest in the dark with spiders, ants, bats, butterflies & everything else that makes the jungle come alive at night. We spotted enormous snails, a jungle chicken, interesting tunnels made by cicadas, frogs & even a sloth! Our walk culminated in a challenge where we stood alone in the dark for 10 minutes. It was a profound experience!

You cannot beat a walk in the forest! I loved the mushrooms, strangling fig & giant elephant’s trunk trees. Then our guide spotted a tiny frog. As we approached for a better look, he told us that it was incredibly poisonous. I made a swift exit! Then he attempted to draw out a tarantula from its den…unsuccessfully.

I also had the chance for a jungle makeover using the dye from the leaves of one of the bushes as my friends looked on. There was a mixture of delight, bewilderment & horror on their faces. I thought I looked great until someone told me it wouldn’t come off!”

Salt/Clay Lick

Unfortunately, I didn’t visit one of these, but it sounds amazing! Along the banks of the river, clay containing essential minerals is deposited. Macaws, parakeets & all manner of wildlife gather to ingest the salts. Visiting is a must for any birdwatcher or animal enthusiast.

Below are a few choices for tours from Manaus in Peru:

Where can you stay?

The best option is to stay in one of the eco-lodges. When else do you get a chance to be engulfed by the forest at night? A lodge stay will generally include all food, tours & transportation. Bear in mind that many of the lodges may not have electricity & are therefore powered by a generator. They may only run the generator at certain hours of the day (5 – 9pm for example), so recharging is more challenging. Where I stayed, the bedrooms were cabin style with flush toilets & solar-powered showers. However, for light, we used our torches & candles. For me, this just added to the magical experience.

Lodges will also provide purified water for drinking & a bar for soft drinks, beers etc. Make sure you bring local currency (small notes) to pay for anything extra you consume. Change will be hard to come by & credit cards useless.”

Lodge Suggestions

I stayed in Tambopata Lodge which was excellent & the guides were exceptionally knowledgeable. There was a stream nearby for swimming & they also have platforms in the trees to get a bird’s eye view of the forest.

Alternatively, there is the Tambopata Research Centre which is reached via a 7-hour boat trip. If you are a fan of bird watching, the Research Centre is near to a salt lick which attracts up to 10 species of parrot & macaw most mornings. Due to its remoteness, stays here are more expensive.

What to Pack for the Amazon Jungle, Peru

The main thing to think about when you are packing is that it’s hot, will probably rain but you will also need to keep covered to avoid being bitten alive!

• Waterproof Jacket or poncho
• Fleece or sweater
• 2 pairs of shorts
• Light coloured long sleeve shirts
• Walking trousers (no jeans, everything can get wet…nothing will dry!)
• Walking boots – lodges will lend rubber boots for the walks
• Flip flops or sandals
• 3 pairs of socks (at least one longer pair to wear inside rubber boots)
• Torch &/or headlamp with extra or new batteries
• Insect repellent with 50% DEET
• Toiletries (make sure these are biodegradable)
• Alarm clock
• Personal first aid kit

• Camera with extra memory cards & battery
• Personal entertainment
• A dapter Plug
• Antibacterial wipes/gel
• Reusable water bottle (your lodge will provide treated water for refilling)
• Plastic bags or dry bags

We were on the Amazon in 2020 for a week and saw some great things. But we travelled by cruise ship so really only visited during the day. We saw the rainforest but did not need to stay close overnight. We packed so much bug spray that we didn’t use that we will not have to buy more for years! Other than sloths, the most interesting wildlife we saw was pink dolphins! Although we did go piraña fishing one day. I am sure your trip was much more in-depth but we were glad we got so long on this muddy river.

Growing up I felt a pull to visit Peru. Its still there but not as strong as it used to be.(I think I have got soft in my old age) Yesterday while walking my dog I casually said hello to another lady and her dog. 5 hours later we went our separate ways. Great post Sue. It really brought back some good memories. We spent 9 days there a few years back at a lodge we reached from Iquitos (and then it’s research lodge deeper into the jungle) – truly epic. But lucky you! We didn’t see capybaras, and hoatzin only from a great distance. Would have loved to have gone to one of those places where there’s salt lick. Also – amazed to discover there may be as many as 50 tribes which have not been in contact with the outside world! Wow!

Located near the equator, Peru has diverse landscapes ranging from beaches, lakes, lush forests, salt flats, deserts to snow-capped mountains. While the country only has wet and dry seasons, different parts of Peru and their various climates should be considered when planning a visit. 

So, the best time to travel to Peru would depend on your destination and planned activities. 

This article looks at Peru’s seasons and various climates to surface the best times to travel to the country’s different popular locations, such as Machu Picchu, the Amazon, and the capital city of Lima.

Travelers can experience many different weather conditions in Peru depending on the season and region they visit. The country has 3 main regions, all with different climate conditions. 

Details on the weather conditions of all 3 at different seasons are given below.

The Coast 

On the coast, the weather is typically dry and mild, with temperatures ranging from 54°F to 84°F (12°C to 29°C), with high humidity and a thick fog during the winter months (May to October). The weather is warm and sunny in the summer (December to March). 

Apart from these months, the weather here is pleasant, with fog and clouds covering the area. Tourists frequently visit the north coast as it presents clear sunny days for most of the year. Trips to the coast can be really great in this South American archipelago.

The Andean Highlands 

In the Andes, the weather is cooler and drier than on the coast, with temperatures ranging from 19°F to 70°F (-7°C to 21°C) depending on the altitude. The dry season is from May to September, while the rainy season is from October to April. 

The weather can be unpredictable, and visitors to the Andes should be prepared for sudden changes in temperature and weather conditions.

The Peruvian Amazon jungle is located on the eastern side of Peru near the border of Colombia , Bolivia , and Brazil. The climate conditions in the jungle are subtropical. The temperatures barely go above 90°F (32.2°C) or below 68°F (20°C). 

The rainy season starts in November and stays till the end of March. The other months see clear skies with hot breezes flowing throughout the Amazon jungle. An expedition to this place is a must in your travel to Peru because of its beautiful geography and incredible wildlife.

Wet and Dry Season in Peru 

Peru receives 2 main seasons. The wet season has the months with the most rain, while the dry season receives no rainfall. 

The wet or rainy season starts between mid-October and the beginning of November. With the passing months, the rain starts to show its true might. 

Once January arrives, the clouds are at their full strength, pouring down rain at high speeds. Rain keeps the area wet for2 months straight, mainly affecting the mountainous region. 

Temperatures in these months are between 59° to 69°F (15° to 20.5°C) at the Amazon while dropping to 32°F (0°C) in the Andean region. If you visit Peru in the wet season, be ready to face muddy paths and damaged roads in the Andean highland region. 

The dry season usually starts at the end of March or sometime in mid-April. In this season, you won’t find any signs of rainfall. The warm breezes flow throughout the Andean highlands and Amazon region, whereas cold breezes move to the coastal areas. 

The overall weather is quite pleasant, with temperatures staying between 65° and 77°F (18.3° and 25°C) in the highlands. The jungle region has even better weather, with temperatures around 65° to 86°F (18.3° and 30°C).

Lima Peru is where you can easily spend more than a couple of days without getting bored. Most people love to visit the place during summer (December to April). In these peak season months, the skies are clear, and the weather is warm in Lima. 

Due to tourist-friendly weather conditions and the summer holiday, you will find a lot of crowds in the city. The bus services will be almost full, and prices will be high. 

If you are not on a low budget and want the best experience of the city, visiting in the summer months is recommended. However, if you want a cheaper experience, visit in the winter (May to November) when the temperatures are low, and La Garua (mist) covers the skies. 

For the Best Weather in Cusco

Unlike the capital of Peru, the best time to visit Cusco is in the dry season (May to November). The rainfall in this area in these months is minimal, and temperatures usually revolve around 68 to 77°F (20° to 25°C). 

If you visit in June, July, and August, you should expect large crowds in famous tourist spots. Please avoid visiting this area in the rainy season as the rain may influence your trekking experience in the great Machu Picchu and other day trips. 

So, carefully plan your excursion to Cusco to make the most of it.

For the Best Weather in Machu Picchu

The ruins of Machu Picchu are one of the most famous tourist destinations in Peru. Due to being a part of the Peruvian Andes region, the place receives 2 different seasons throughout the year (dry and wet). The dry season (April to November) is preferable since sunny days and clear skies will allow you to see the stunning Andean peaks. 

Most people without travel guides pick the summer season for hot days without realizing that the season comes with heavy rain. On the other hand, the dry season is a bit cooler but offers clear skies. The adventurous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is also available this season. 

The amazing trail leads to a beautiful sacred valley. Keep in mind the trek is closed in February. 

For the Best Weather in the Peruvian Amazon

The Peruvian Amazon is a rainforest, so be prepared to get wet regardless of the season you visit. The dry season, however, is much preferable as it receives less rain. It is also the time when the fauna come out, making the overall experience of the forest much livelier. 

The Amazon rainforest receives around 2.4 inches (60 millimeters) of rain monthly in the dry season. On the other hand, the wet season receives around 5.9 inches (150 mm) of rain each month. During the dry season, the temperature remains around the 80s, making it an ideal time to experience the mesmerizing jungle of Peru. 

Many tourists love to visit here during the wet season, mainly because of the high-water levels at the rivers, which allows people to explore the Amazon more by boat. Some small tributaries can only be accessed during the wet season. 

For Festivals

Peru is ideal for travelers looking to learn about culture and traditions. Fortunately, Peru has plenty of festivals for tourists to enjoy and learn. Villages are steep in traditions that are celebrated regularly, which any traveler will enjoy. 

The first big festival of the year, called La Candelaria, starts in February. In this festival, you can experience more than thousands of artists and dancers giving tribute to the Virgin of Candlemas, Quechua heritage, and Aymara. It is held in Puno, a city in the southern part of the country near Lake Titicaca.

Another great festival is the Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia (National Wine Festival), held yearly at Ica, which is famous for its winery and hosts one of the best wine festivals in the country. The festival lasts around 10 days during the first week of March, so you can expect to experience some high-quality wine.

Another great city to visit for Peruvian culture is Cusco, which hosts 2 major festivals. One of these festivals is called the Easter Festival or Semana Santa. Over a thousand locals line the street following the parade of Christ, which starts from the church and marches towards Plaza de Armas. 

The second festival of Cusco is called the winter solstice (Inti Raymi). It takes place on 21st June every year. 

Most people love food festivals, and Peru is no less in that department. Lima’s Mistura Festival is one of the biggest food festivals in South America, held annually in September.

The trip’s cost also depends on the weather, so if the climate conditions don’t bother you, you should visit Peru in the wet season. It is when most people avoid visiting the country due to bad weather.

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT PERU AND AMAZONIA

Conditions along the Amazon in Peru can be divided into two seasons: a season of rain from December to April, and a summer season that extends from May to November. A tour to the Manu in any season promises great rewards with impressive opportunities to see and photograph magnificent plant and wildlife, unique to any other place in the land.

The weather in this region of the Amazon is generally warm with some rain at any time of the year. Even during the “dry” summer season you can expect showers. Even during the months of rain the Amazon only gets about 10% more rain than in the summer. Therefore, Manu Rainforest Peru would like to make some recommendations for you to choose the time of year for your tour with us (in either season).

December to April: Rain and High Water in the Manu The rain season in Peru (from December through April) is relatively cooler and wetter. During this time, the Amazon region receives just over half (60%) of its annual volume of precipitation. Temperatures average 86 ° F (30 ° C), which is only 12 ° F (7 ° C) cooler than the summer season average.

The disadvantage of visiting the Manu Amazon jungle now is the swelling of the river basin after accumulating masses of rain from the surrounding Andes. The landscape changes dramatically due to the heavy inflow of rainwater. High Rivers and streams of the basin like Manu, the Madre de Dios, and Tambopata eventually rise 16 feet (5 meters). We can still offer a trip to the jungle in November through January and March through April. This can make your trip more adventurous and special, waterfalls abound! And there are fewer tourists so a more private experience. However, you will need to be flexible and understand that forces of nature can change the itinerary of our trip without notice. February is the only month Manu Rainforest Peru suggests not to travel to the Manu jungle. This is the month with the most abundant rainfall causing fast moving rivers impossible for our boats and landslides making roads collapse, forcing us to turn back. This month is capable of incredible amounts of water! Although wildlife sighting probabilities change significantly this month, it is not likely to see the favorite fauna of the Amazon: jaguar, capybara, alligators, giant ant eaters or even turtles, as the banks and beaches disappear under water and the animals retreat far away into the forest. Additionally, it is very muddy and inundated with so much water running throughout, paths can become impassable.

May-November: Amazon Summer Season The time of low water in the Amazon, from May to November, coincides with warmer temperatures. Temperatures average around 98 ° F (37 ° C). Despite its name, low water season can have occasional rainy days and heavy rain showers during an otherwise sunny day.

A key difference of a visit to Manu in summer season is that now we can access lakes, bird and animal clay licks, and jungle paths, allowing our small groups to explore much more easily.

Our guests also tend to experience an even greater abundance of bird migration in flight at this time. In addition, the low levels of water leave bare land and beaches that offer a good opportunity of sighting jaguar, caimans, Capybaras, tapirs, monkeys, turtles and abundant birds. Great fishing is 100% guaranteed. Although this is a busy time for a visit, we keep our groups small and separate from other groups.

If seeing our glorious Amazon rainforest at its most exuberant and getting up close to a lot of amazing wildlife and birds (as well as enjoying slightly cooler temperatures) sounds more attractive to you, then booking your trip from May to November might be your best choice. As this is peak season, please try to book early. At any rate, the Amazon awaits you. Any time of the year you visit the Amazon rain forest will be amazing regardless of whether you choose a rainy season tour or a summer tour. Best Time To Visit The Amazon Peru for the Amazon Rain Fores Tours really depends on what you’re hoping to get out of the experience. If it’s low temperatures and less humidity, then winter (June-August) would be good–but keep in mind that this is also when water levels are lowest so some areas will only allow passage by smaller boats during high tide season or else lock up tight shut altogether due to their depth limitations.

A sizzling strip of coastal desert. Endless snow-capped Andean summits. A humid expanse of rainforest mazed by mighty rivers. These three types of terrain form a triumvirate of completely different climates, ensuring there is no bad time of year to visit  Peru .  

This is a tradition-entrenched, festival-focused land, with at least one vibrant celebration a week to add color to your trip. Whether you're a city lover stopping in the famous foodie capital of  Lima  or an adventurer heading for the Inca Trail, you'll find what you need to plan your perfect Peru vacation here.

June to August is the best time for Andean and Amazonian adventures

Most Western travelers prefer Peruvian winter. This isn't only because it coincides with their main holiday period, but because the crystal-clear weather casts the Andes , where the country’s most popular tourist sights beckon, in sharp sunlight. 

Fascinating festivals also occur, and the tantalizing trekking ground is dry underfoot. Adventure season is in full swing.

The ancient Incan capital of Cuzco grabs the most attention, along with the nearby Sacred Valley , where picturesque, Inca-ruin-dotted gorges invitingly thread through to the greatest site of them all: Machu Picchu .

The big treks – especially the Inca Trail , but others in Sacred Valley and those in snow-bedaubed Cordilleras Huayhuash and Blanca – are also irresistibly beautiful in the brilliant sunshine, but it's peak hiking season and they do get very busy.

June brings an array of fabulous fiestas, which enliven thoroughfares in Cuzco and other regional towns on a near-daily basis, the most notable being Inti Raymi, an Inca celebration of the winter solstice.

Further south down the Andes, Lake Titicaca glitters like a blue jewel, with tempting tradition-rich islands. The Selvámonos festival kicks off in Oxapampa at the end of the month and its live music and cultural celebrations are a wonderful way to spend a week in the valley.

It's dry season in the Amazon Basin  too – July is as dry as it gets in the Amazon, even though it's never truly dry there! The sunnier weather in the cloud forest lures birdlife out into the open, including the bright orange-red Andean cock-of-the-rock, Peru’s national bird, which mates at this time.

Down in the low jungle, wildlife is easier to spy than on the riverbanks, and forays down rivers like the Tambopata, near Puerto Maldonado , yield especially diverse sightings.

Lower water levels mean excellent whitewater rafting conditions: the Apurimac, near Cuzco, and the Tambopata are ideal for rapids-riding. Locals take to the streets in Paucartambo in mid-July to celebrate La Virgen del Carmen with music, dancing and colorful costumes – it's like a mini Mardi Gras.

September to November is best for quiet hikes and surfing without crowds

It's shoulder season everywhere, particularly in the Andes, where clear sunny days linger through September. For trekkers who prefer to have the mountains to themselves, this is the best time to go – utter solitude beckons on many hiking routes .

The Inca Trail is always well-trodden, but alternatives such as the Salkantay Trek, where you traverse a 4630m (15,190ft) pass loftier than any point on the Inca Trail, allow you to lose the crowds.

September also marks the end of the jungle’s dry season, so it's a good time to try rainforest trekking or wildlife-watching on a boat trip from Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado before the spring rains descend and make travel trickier.

As the action in the interior decreases, it's pre-peak season on the coast. Toward late spring, the thick garúa (coastal fog) that's been enveloping Lima since July begins to lift, but it's still worth visiting Peru’s dynamic gastronomic capital earlier. 

Temperatures are rising along the country’s sandy beaches, but the masses have not yet checked in. By November, waves at Peru’s best surfing spots – including the home of the planet’s longest left wave at Puerto Chicama – are approaching their cresting best. 

Día de los Muertos is celebrated all over the country at the start of the month. Though this occasion is about loved ones who have passed away, the atmosphere is anything but somber – it's a celebration of love and life.

December to February is the best time for beach lovers

This is the season to see Peru’s magnificent beaches at their best. Sunbathing on the searingly warm northern beaches is delightful – temperatures routinely hover in the 30°C to 40°C (86°F to 104°F) realm, and crowds flock to see-and-be-seen resorts like trendy Máncora .

Cusco hosts the biggest celebrations for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8 – a national holiday in Peru.

It's peak surfing season too. But for a different coastal experience, take a boat trip to the rarely glimpsed mangrove forests near Tumbes, or to the rocky sealife sanctuary of Islas Ballestas near Paracas, where sea lion pups are born in January.

From Paracas, it's a straight shot inland to Peru’s most colossal dunes at Huacachina – sandboarding down is the coastal region’s greatest adrenalin rush. Lima is largely garúa -free, so capitalize and try activities like paragliding over the city.

Inland, the wet season is at its height, and the Inca Trail is closed through February. Carnaval  kicks off at the end of February and Latin America's biggest party is celebrated in style across the entire country.

March to May is best for budget travelers and festival fanatics

With the exception of the riotous pre-Easter revelry of Semana Santa (Holy Week), this is a wallet-friendly time to visit Peru. Summer’s manic crush of visitors is over, the coast retains pleasant weather through March and deals can be struck as popular spots try to eke out their custom.

Carnaval  season in Peru continues from February into March with an explosion of color and celebrations everywhere.

It's not yet high season in the Andes or the Amazon, despite increasingly sun-kissed weather and bursts of bewitching greenery tinting the slopes, so accommodation and tours will be well below high-season tariffs.

The coastal strip entices as grapes ripen to the picking point, erupting in Ica’s wine-harvesting celebration, Fiesta de la Vendimia, in the second week of March.

Up in the mountains, against a canvas of steadily improving dry, bright weather, May can rival high season in terms of eye-popping festivals. 

Marvel at the spectacle of El Señor de Muruhua y, one of South America’s biggest pilgrimages held near Tarma, or the intriguing religious celebration of Fiesta de las Cruces, in cities like Cuzco, Ayacucho, and Lima.

BELÉN, Peru (AP) — In the heart of Peru’s Amazon region, a poor neighborhood put aside the trials and tribulations of everyday life and celebrated an international film festival with works from countries with tropical forests.

Many who attended the 10-day event had never seen a movie on the big screen, and the one used for the festival was itself unique due to the area’s geography.

“The festival aims to be a tribute to the jungles of the world and its people, to the Indigenous communities, in which we believe lies the answer to the challenges and destruction that forests face now that everyone is talking about climate change,” Daniel Martínez-Quintanilla, co-executive director of the festival that ends Sunday, said.

Life in the community of Belén revolves around water. Houses and businesses are built on stilts because rains regularly lead to monthslong floods. Families own canoes to move around, but children who lack one sometimes use large plastic containers instead.

So, members of the Muyuna Floating Film Festival — muyuna in the Quechua language means “a whirlpool formed in mighty rivers” — set the screen on a 10- meter (33-foot) high wooden structure, allowing residents to enjoy the films from their canoes or the windows of their homes.

“For the first time, we are getting to know these settings that are bringing us to this community,” said Belén resident Jorge Chilicahua, a 60-year-old farmer who raises chickens and plants cassava, corn and vegetables to meet his family’s needs. He has never been to a movie theater.

Much of the population of Belén comes from rural areas of the Peruvian Amazon and are part of various Indigenous groups, including the Kukama, Yagua and Bora, that migrated in search of better economic, educational and health opportunities. Their challenges abound.

People fish by making holes in the wooden floors of their houses, which forces mothers to keep a watchful eye over their children who do not yet know how to swim so that they don’t fall into the water and drown. Health authorities have reported malnutrition and diarrhea are common due to lack of drinking water.

Martínez-Quintanilla said the event included films from Thailand, Brazil, Taiwan, Panama and other countries with tropical forests, as well as others made by young Peruvians.

The works screened included the Peruvian animated short film “The Engine and the Melody,” which tells the story of an ant that fells Amazonian trees and a cicada that manages to regenerate the forest by playing a prodigious flute — until everything changes when a forest fire occurs.

Anthony Vaccarello finally figured out how to reproduce his collection of ultra-sheer pantyhose dresses. Bella Hadid hit Cannes in look seven from the Saint Laurent fall 2024 show: a halter dress featuring 10 denier hosiery cups, a knotted pantyhose bodice, and a below-the-knee skirt with a control top hemline.

Hadid, styled by Molly Dickson, leaned into the Old Hollywood glamour that has become synonymous with the Cannes Film Festival, adding a pair of mahogany peep-toe ankle strap heels and an enormous pair of drop earrings from Chopard.

This look fits into Hadid’s latest sartorial M.O. of sheer earthy tones that can only be described as “sexy nymph.” While promoting her fragrance, Orebella, in New York, the model wore a diaphanous nude Dior slip dress by John Galliano, as well as a cream-colored Rokh dress with a lace bodice. And yesterday in Cannes, she further explored brown tones in a simple tank dress . But this look—with only some extremely well-placed seams preserving her modesty—is by far her boldest to date.

When asked about how he would manufacture these ephemeral pieces from the collection, Vaccarello told Vogue, “Don’t even ask me about production—I can’t tell you.” This being the first instance the delicate outfits have been spotted on the red carpet speaks to Hadid’s risk-taking style. Even if she is the only person who ever wears one of these sheer Saint Laurent looks out in the world (let’s see if she can make it to the end of the night without any snags) the fact that Vaccarello was readily willing to make one for her speaks to Hadid’s immense power in the fashion industry.

And if this is Hadid’s wardrobe for her first official day of events in Cannes? We can only imagine what’s to come.
