Top sights & landmarks for cruises to bergen.

The Wharf at Bryggen is one of the most famous sights in all of Norway, and it was even declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. This row of colorful, almost symmetrical homes look like a postcard, and there are even guided walks that start at the Bryggens Museum so you can learn all about the history of the area. This is the place to shop, stop for a coffee, or enjoy a romantic waterfront dinner while in port on your fjord cruise to Bergen.

Bryggens Museum

Curious about life in the Middle Ages in Norway? Head to the Bryggens Museum, where you’ll be surrounded by historic artifacts and findings from archaeological excavations. The museum honors the first settlements in Bergen and offers a step back in time for any visitor to the city. It’s small and approachable, making it a perfect stop on an afternoon of museum hopping in Bergen.

Edvard Grieg Museum

Walk in the footsteps and see the home of famous Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg at the museum named for him. This charming, countryside villa is located along a lake. The villa tells the story of Grieg’s illustrious music career and the life he shared with his wife. History buffs will be fascinated by the expert preservation of Grieg’s possessions and his fascinating life story.

Top things to do in bergen, explore the fjords.

A Bergen cruise stop is the ideal jumping-off point for travelers eager to see Norway’s stunning fjord system. Many guided tours will start and end in Bergen, where adventures might include hiking, kayaking, and scaling the dramatic cliffscape of the fjords.

Head to the Top of Mt. Fløyen

Just a few minutes’ walk from the Bergen cruise port is the funicular, which will take you to the impressive summit of Mt. Fløyen. In less than 10 minutes, you’ll be enjoying panoramic views of the entire city below. Enjoy a mountain walk, or hike from Mt. Fløyen all the way to neighboring Mount Ulriken. Leave at least a half day to fully take in the mountains and nature of this area.

Tour St. Mary’s Church

Since 1180, St. Mary’s Church has stood steadfastly in the center of Bryggen. It’s the oldest building in all of Bergen, and its Gothic architecture will fascinate you. See the magic for yourself during your stop on a fjord cruise to Bergen. Guided tours offer a short half-hour journey through hundreds of years of history.

Explore the Famous Fish Market

It’s no secret that fishing and seafood are a huge part of life in Bergen. Experience it for yourself when you eat out or explore the Bergen Fish Market, which has been around since the 13th century. Fresh catches, vegetables, and locally farmed fruit are market staples. Watch as locals make their grocery purchases, people watch, and admire the day’s catches as you stroll the harborfront.

Food and Drink Spots Near the Bergen Cruise Port

Restaurant Cornelius

Address: Strandgaten 203, 5004 Bergen, Norway

Seafood is what Restaurant Cornelius does best, and with fjord views and passing ships just beyond the restaurant, it’s hard to go wrong with this kind of ambiance. The restaurant offers a culinary journey through Norway. The five-course meal is perfect for an upscale, slow evening meal featuring some of the region’s freshest seafood, from fresh-shucked oysters to ceviche, scallops, king crab, and more.

Marg & Bein

Address: Fosswinckelsgate 18, 5007 Bergen, Norway

The trendy Marg & Bein has decadent mains like white fish and mussels in a cream sauce or braised ox and potatoes cooked in duck fat. Creative spins on seafood dishes and an attention to detail make Marg & Bein worth checking out. The atmosphere is modern and Scandinavian sleek, and the menu changes seasonally.

Horn of Africa

Address: Strandgaten 212, 5004 Bergen, Norway

Looking for something other than seafood? Head to Horn of Africa, which caters to your cravings for Ethiopian and African dishes, plus offers plenty of vegetarian options. The injera, or Ethiopian savory pancake, pairs perfectly with both vegetarian and meat options. The cozy restaurant makes for a laid-back atmosphere.

Culture & History in Bergen

The gateway to Norway’s most famous fjords, Bergen was also once the capital of Norway until it was unseated by Oslo in the 13th century. Bergen has always been a port city, and the impact of fishing has been integral to the economy for hundreds of years. Today, Bergen remains one of Norway’s most important port cities and is the country’s second biggest city, though retains the friendliness of a small town. The official language is Norwegian, but many in Bergen speak English pretty fluently, so English speakers won’t have any difficulty navigating around.

Bergen Port Facilities & Location

When your Bergen cruise docks in port, you’ll find it’s a quick and easy walk to the city center and most of the attractions and historic sites. Bergen is commonly used as a stopover on the way to the best fjords in the region, but the central location of the cruise port makes it easy to stay local for the day.

Transportation in Bergen

It’s easy to get around downtown on foot, and most of the big sights are within walking distance of one another. Bikes, ferries, and buses are all available transportation options here. Note that renting a car can be expensive because of the limited parking options. Taxis can be hailed in the center of the city and in other parts of town, too. The ferry system is commonly used by travelers wanting to get to various fjords throughout the region, but those are often multi-day journeys. Bergen’s light rail is called the Bybanen, which is an effective way to get to popular tourist sights in Bergen.

Shopping Near the Bergen Cruise Port

Because you’re close to the city center on your Bergen fjord cruise, there’s no need to worry about going out of your way to find good shopping. The best shopping is in the historic Bryggen area, and there are also boutiques selling wool goods and locally made ceramics nearby. The city’s main shopping district, where you’ll find dozens of Norwegian name brands, boutiques, and local craftsmen, is just beyond Olav Kyrres Gate.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency of Norway is the krone (kr). Norway is moving gradually toward being a cash-free society, so debit and credit cards are commonly accepted here, unlike some other parts of Europe. MasterCard, Visa, and American Express are widely used. ATMs in Norway are called “mini banks,” so look out for that if you’re looking for a place to withdraw a little cash or check your balance. Don’t worry about tipping your taxi driver or restaurant server, as the tip is usually already included in a service charge on your bill. When you pay with a credit card in Norway, there will usually be a blank line for leaving a tip if you wish to tip additionally.

Bergen, Norway

Norway's second-largest city, Bergen is the gateway to the country's mesmerizing fjords. Walking, Segway and double-decker bus tours bring you to Bryggen wharf, the 12th-century trade center that now is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the district's shops, galleries and art studios, and visit the Hanseatic Museum to learn about the merchants who once lived and sold here. The city is surrounded by seven mountains, and a funicular railway ride to the top of the tallest peak, Mount Floyen, reveals postcard-worthy views. Other notable attractions include St. Mary's Church, the town's oldest structure; the seasonal fish market, with its fresh seafood, fruit and vegetables; the Bergenhus Fortress Museum, which highlights Norway's role in World War II; and an aquarium, where you can observe sea lions, crocodiles and more. On a catamaran cruise to the picturesque Osterfjord and Mostraumen strait, sample ice-cold mountain water your captain captures from a waterfall.

Europe: cruise ship trio hook up to shore power simultaneously in bergen.

For the first time, three cruise ships have connected to shore power simultaneously at the Port of Bergen.

‘Cruise ships are getting better and better when it comes to turning off their diesel engines when docked, and instead using electricity from the shore power facility in the port,’ the Port of Bergen said in a social media post today (28 May). ‘This saves the city from large amounts of CO2 emissions.’

As Bunkerspot previously reported , the Port of Bergen said 65% of the cruise ships that called in April connected to shore power. By 2026, the port expects all cruise ships to use electricity instead of diesel when docked.

The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Viking cruise ship

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Fast-growing Viking has one of the most diverse arrays of itineraries of any cruise line.

Not only does the California-based company offer ocean cruises in almost every corner of the world, it also offers river cruises on many of the world’s major rivers.

That’s notably different from most cruise lines. Typically, cruise lines operate either ocean cruises or river cruises but not both. That gives them a smaller range of itineraries.

For more cruise guides, tips and news, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

Viking has a particularly large footprint when it comes to European river itineraries, with a wide range of sailings on nearly every European river of any note, from the Douro in Portugal to (until recently) the Volga in Russia.

The company also operates river trips on the Nile in Egypt and the Mekong in Southeast Asia, and it just began river trips on the Mississippi River .

There are 80 river ships in Viking’s fleet — an astounding number. None of its main competitors among river lines catering to North Americans, which include Avalon Waterways, Uniworld and AmaWaterways , have anywhere near that number of vessels.

Related: First look at Viking’s stylish new Nile River ship

Among ocean cruise destinations, Viking has a major presence in Scandinavia and Northern Europe, which it considers its home turf. (The company was founded by a Norwegian family.) However, you’ll find Viking’s nine traditional ocean ships everywhere from North America to Asia and Australia.

Last year, the line began cruising to Antarctica with its first expedition ship — a type of vessel built specifically for travel to remote, hard-to-reach places. Viking now has two such vessels.

Among the line’s voyages, there’s everything from eight-day cruises in the Mediterranean to 138-day around-the-world voyages.

Overwhelmed with choices? Here are the five best Viking cruise destinations where the line can truly offer you a memorable vacation.

Scandinavia and Northern Europe

Some of Viking’s most interesting itineraries are around Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea, with many beginning or ending in Norway — the homeland of the company’s founder and chairman, Torstein Hagen.

As Hagen once told me, Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea are what the company considers “Viking country” — a region where it wants to dominate.

During summers, in particular, Viking devotes an unusually large number of its ships to itineraries around Scandinavia, the Baltic Sea and other Northern Europe destinations such as Iceland. Many, notably, use the relatively small but famously scenic Norwegian city of Bergen (population 286,000) as a gateway, something no other line is doing. That allows for unusual variations on the typical Baltic Sea or Norwegian fjords cruise.

The line’s most popular route in the region, “Viking Homelands,” is a two-week-long, one-way trip between Bergen and Stockholm that combines several days of exploring the fjord region of Norway’s west coast with more-typical Baltic cruise destinations such as St. Petersburg, Russia, and Helsinki.

Related: The ultimate guide to Viking ships and itineraries

Note that, in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Viking has pulled the St. Petersburg stop, as well as stops in Finland and Estonia from the Viking Homelands itinerary; the trips instead feature extra stops in Norway and Denmark. It’s unlikely St. Petersburg will return to the itinerary until the war in Ukraine is resolved.

Viking also offers a 14-night itinerary that includes several stops in the northernmost part of the country above the Arctic Circle. Dubbed “Into the Midnight Sun,” the one-way route between Bergen and London is unique because it combines calls in far-north Honningsvag and Tromso, Norway, with visits to Scotland’s remote Shetland Islands and the Orkney Islands. Though part of the United Kingdom, these archipelagos have ties to Norwegian and Viking history.

Itineraries that will take you from Bergen to Iceland or even as far away as France, Portugal and Spain also are available.

Viking’s Scandinavia and Northern Europe trips range widely in length from just seven nights to a whopping 28 nights.

Among the longest sailings that Viking offers that include calls in Northern Europe are one-way, 28-night voyages between Bergen and New York City. The trips include stops in Norway, Iceland, Greenland and Canada.

In Northern Europe, Viking ships mostly sail out of Bergen, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen and London as well as Reykjavik.

The Mediterranean

Viking has grown into a major player in Mediterranean sailings, with more than 30 distinct itineraries that include stops in the region.

The trips include voyages focused specifically on the Western Mediterranean or Eastern Mediterranean and some that include stops across both areas.

Typical of the latter is the line’s 14-night “Mediterranean Antiquities” routing, a one-way trip between Athens and Barcelona that stops in Greece, Turkey, Italy, Monaco, France and Spain.

More-focused Mediterranean itineraries include the line’s nine-night “Empires of the Mediterranean” voyages between Venice and Athens, which mostly concentrate on stops along the eastern side of the Adriatic Sea in Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro.

In the Mediterranean, the line’s main hubs are Barcelona; Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Venice, Italy; Piraeus (the port for Athens), Greece; and Istanbul.

Europe riverways

Viking is, quite simply, the giant of river cruising in Europe — at least among lines that cater to English speakers. The company operates around 70 river ships on a broad swath of the continent’s rivers — far more than any other river line catering to North Americans.

In all, the line accounts for about half of all river cruises taken by North Americans in the region. The next biggest player in Europe river cruises for North Americans, AmaWaterways, is less than half the size.

Among the rivers in Europe where Viking has a major presence are the Rhine, Main and Danube in Central Europe; the Seine, Rhone, Dordogne, Garonne and Gironde in France; the Douro in Portugal; and the Moselle and Elbe in Germany. Until recently, Viking also offered cruises on the Dnieper River in Ukraine. The voyages have been suspended since Russia invaded the country in early 2022.

On nearly all of the rivers, the line offers multiple itineraries with lengths ranging from seven nights to as many as 22 nights.

Among 10 different itineraries on the Rhine River alone, offerings range from a seven-night “Rhine Getaway” from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland, to a 22-night “European Sojourn” from Amsterdam to Bucharest, Romania. The latter adds travel on the Main and Danube rivers to days on the Rhine.

Viking offers some of the most intimate and elegant cruises on the Nile, with three ships including the recently unveiled, 82-passenger Viking Osiris — one of our favorite vessels on the river.

All three of Viking’s Nile ships operate the same seven-night Nile cruise itinerary that Viking pairs with a four-night stay at a hotel in Cairo (three nights before the cruise and one night after) to create an 11-night “Pharaohs and Pyramids” tour of Egypt.

Related: The ultimate guide to Viking’s loyalty program

The cruise portion of the tour includes visits to the historic temples of Luxor, Karnak, Esna, Dendera and Abu Simbel as well as a visit to the iconic Valley of the Kings. The stay in Cairo brings a visit to the pyramids of Giza, the Egyptian Museum and other sites.

Viking Osiris is the first of four sister ships that Viking plans to launch on the Nile by 2025 as it doubles its footprint in Egypt. The vessels offer a clean-lined, Scandinavian-influenced design that mimics the look of Viking’s Europe-based vessels.

Notably, the ship features an entire deck of sprawling suites that rival anything else found on the Nile for luxury and comfort. Each comes with two full-size rooms — a large living room with a residential feel and an adjacent bedroom with a walk-in closet and bathroom. Each suite also has an outdoor balcony with seating for two — something you don’t always see on Nile ships.

Viking is a newcomer to cruises to Antarctica, but the destination is a big growth area for the line. Viking recently added two new, 378-passenger expedition cruise vessels specifically built to travel to the White Continent.

Dubbed Viking Octantis, the first of these vessels began sailings to Antarctica in February 2022. The second ship in the series, Viking Polaris, has just joined its sister in Antarctica this year. Together, the two ships are already making waves in the market for Antarctica cruises, in part because they have several new and unusual features.

Most notable is The Hangar, an enclosed marina that allows passengers to transfer to two of each ship’s exploratory vessels while still in the protected interior of the ship. A first for an expedition ship, it’s something that is significantly improving the experience for passengers heading out on Antarctica exploration.

Related: The 3 types of Viking ships, explained

In another first for polar expedition cruise vessels, every cabin on both Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris has floor-to-ceiling glass walls that slide partially open from the top to create a balcony-like feel.

Viking offers several Antarctic itineraries, with the typical trip starting with a night at a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, before a flight to Ushuaia, Argentina, to board one of the two expedition ships for an 11-night cruise to Antarctica and back. A longer version of the trip features 13 nights on board one of the ships and extra days in Antarctica.

Viking also offers Antarctica sailings that combine a visit to the White Continent with stops in the Falkland Islands, Uruguay and Brazil.

Viking Octantis, notably, also operated Viking’s first sailings around the Great Lakes this year. In 2023, both Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris will spend their summers in the Great Lakes.

Port Canaveral reveals first ships that will use new cruise terminal

bergen cruise ship port

Port Canaveral commissioners this week approved the first of a series of contracts for construction of a new cruise terminal on the port's north side. Port officials also revealed two of the cruise lines expected to use the new terminal.

The new terminal — being referred to "Terminal X" for the time being — will be built on the current site of North Cargo Berth 8 and directly across from Cruise Terminal 5.

Commissioners on Wednesday unanimously approved a $1.45 million increase in a purchase order with AtkinsRealis USA for marine improvement design at North Cargo Berth 8 that will be phased in for use of the berth for cruise ships. Phase 1 of AtkinsRealis' project will be design of a pier extension and mooring improvements, with Phase 2 including a bulkhead parallel to State Road 401 between Cruise Terminal 5 and North Cargo Berth 8.

Port officials announced earlier this month that they would transform the North Cargo Berth 8 site into a cruise terminal and parking garage that they want to be completed by July 2026.

The port's announcement pushes back — but does not eliminate — the port's previously announced plans to build a $175 million south side cruise terminal and parking garage at the current site of Bluepoints Marina. Under those plans, the marina operation would move elsewhere at the port before the cruise terminal opens.

Port Canaveral CEO John Murray said there is no total cost estimate for the cruise terminal and parking garage at the site of North Cargo Berth 8. But it is expected to be less than the cost estimate for the proposed south side terminal because some of the needed infrastructure already is in place at the North Cargo Berth 8 site.

What ships might use new terminal?

Cruise terminal plan: Port Canaveral announces plans for new north side cruise terminal at cargo berth site

Murray said Cruise Terminal X will be large enough to accommodate the world's largest cruise ships. It will be used by two or three cruise lines, in contrast with some of the port's terminals that are used exclusively or predominantly by one cruise brand.

Murray said Terminal X will be used for "the extra-large vessels that need the extra berth length and the larger-sized terminal for passenger flow."

William Crowe, the port's vice president of engineering, construction and facilities, told port commissioners that the first ship to use the new cruise terminal could be the Norwegian Joy , which will be joining the port lineup in November 2025. It is possible for the terminal to operate while final construction is still progressing. The Joy will predominantly sail seven-night voyages to the Caribbean out of Port Canaveral, with some four- and five-night voyages to the Bahamas.

Another ship that could use the new terminal is the MSC Grandiosa , which will start sailing from Port Canaveral in December 2025.

However, port officials emphasized that those plans are tentative, and could change, based on the progress of the terminal's construction and other factors.

Amended MSC operating agreement approved

Expanded MSC presence: MSC to base second cruise ship, the Grandiosa, at Port Canaveral starting late next year

In a separate vote, port commissioners unanimously approved an amendment to the port's operating agreement with MSC that will roughly double the guaranteed annual revenue Port Canaveral receives from MSC, with the addition of the Grandiosa. That will give Port Canaveral two home-ported ships, as the Grandiosa joins the MSC Seashore.

Under the current operating agreement, the annual guaranteed fees payment from MSC to the port is about $6.84 million. That will increase to $13.16 million after the Grandiosa joins the lineup. It will rise to $14.52 million the following year and to $14.95 million the year after that.

The port also will get more parking revenue from MSC cruise passengers, with the second ship and resulting increased passenger counts.

"This is kind of a big deal," Canaveral Port Authority Chairman Micah Loyd said. "It's been in the works for quite some time."

Loyd noted that MSC is "moving up the ranks" among cruise lines at Port Canaveral, in terms of passenger counts.

The Grandiosa will sail seven-night voyages from Port Canaveral to the Eastern and Western Caribbean, while the Seashore will sail three- and four-night voyages to the Bahamas.

Additionally, the MSC Meraviglia will continue its weekly port-of-call deployments to Port Canaveral.

MSC cancellations cut port's April revenue

Port Canaveral Chief Financial Officer Michael Poole reported that the port's operating revenue during April fell short of projection by 6.5% because of five canceled cruise ship sailings.

Port officials said those April sailings included two on the Port Canaveral-based MSC Seashore and three on the New York-based MSC Meraveglia, which makes port-of-call stops at Port Canaveral. The cancellations ― which were announced by MSC after Port Canaveral completed its budget projections last fall ― were the result of construction work MSC is doing on its private island in the Bahamas, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. That reduced the total number of cruise sailings from Port Canaveral in April to 74, down from a projected 79.

A few additional MSC cancellations were expected in May.

Port officials were not concerned, however, about their financial results. The port's total operating revenue for the first seven months of the budget year that began Oct. 1 is at 2.3% above projection, and total profits are at $44.76 million.
