The show was good but very short. Not a lot of songs from her new album. Was disappointing to say the least - especially for a hometown show. We would have loved to hear more complete versions from her new album.

Hi I really enjoyed the show, despite being somewhat short. I bought a red rose for her and when she was singing in front of our section, I noticed she smiled. I resent not taking a picture. I have been a fan of hers since 2002.

This was my first time seeing Avril Lavigne. She did a lot of old songs and messed up the ending of Happy Endings. She did a few new songs. Overall I had fun.

Hey, hey, you, you, do you want to see Avril Lavigne live in concert next year?

There seems to be an early noughties renaissance happening at the moment, with Nickelback tickets being announced and Blink 182 headlining Reading and Leeds Festival , and now Pop Punk queen Lavigne is coming to the UK to perform two headline shows.

Back in the early noughties, nobody was doing it like Lavigne; the Canadian singer’s tank top and tie combo, cargo trousers, and studded bracelets paired with signature charcoal eye makeup was something school-age us could only dream of replicating.

The Going Out team has essentially grown up with Lavigne, so it’s hard to believe there was a time where the world’s ears weren’t blessed with ballads like When You're Gone and I’m With You. Lavigne’s big break came at the age of 14 when she won a radio competition to duet with That Don't Impress Me Much singer Shania Twain. The duo sung What Made You Say That, and it proved to be such a success that Lavigne left school to pursue music full time.

The rest — as they say — is history! The Girlfriend singer went on to achieve three UK number ones with her first three albums; her debut album Let Go featured the smash-hit singles Sk8r Boi and Complicated, and it earned her five Grammy Award nominations and multi-Platinum status in the UK, making her the youngest solo artist to score a number one album this side of the pond, at aged 17.

Her sophomore album, Under My Skin, debuted at number one in countries around the world, and her third album, The Best Damn Thing, also reached number one in seven countries, and its single Girlfriend reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

To date, the singer-songwriter has sold 40 million albums worldwide and has eight Grammy Award nominations under her belt. So, if you’re keen to see the Pop Punk princess live, here’s how to secure tickets to see her today.

Avril Lavigne on waiting 22 years to play Glastonbury

Avril Lavigne on the Other Stage

Avril Lavigne's pop-punk set drew one of the biggest crowds The Other Stage has ever seen

  • Published 30 June 2024

Avril Lavigne is the original pop-punk princess and she certainly showed it when she played to a huge Glastonbury crowd on Saturday evening.

Her angsty teenage heartbreak anthems still resonate more than two decades after they were released.

She played some of her biggest tracks including Complicated, Sk8er Boi and My Happy Ending.

"I can't believe its taken me 22 years to finally play Glastonbury, but it was amazing," she tells the BBC.

"The audience were incredible, everyone was up on shoulders, holding signs and there were colourful smoke bombs going off, it was just so cool," Avril adds.

The Canadian artist drew one of the biggest crowds The Other Stage has ever seen - it was clear from the very start of her set that she had an incredibly loyal fanbase.

'I can't believe it's taken me 22 years'

Several times throughout her performance, the cameras panned to members of the audience who were singing along to every word.

"I've had seven albums and done seven tours and it's just as exciting as ever," she says.

Avril has just released a greatest hits album, with a sold-out North American tour to go alongside it.

She says that she still loves playing songs from her first album - Let Go, which was released in 2002 and helped her become the youngest female soloist to have a UK number one album at the age of 17.

"Everyone is still really excited by [the music] - I think that's what connects me and my audience, it's the songwriting and the songs".

Her influence on female artists has been undeniable - Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo and Charli XCX have all cited the 39-year-old as a huge inspiration.

Avril Lavigne: 'I still do the groceries'

  • Published 26 February 2022

Avril says the reason her lyrics resonate so much is because they're relatable. "It's always been important for me to write and be real," she tells us.

"I'm writing about stuff that I went through in high school, like having a crush on a guy for the first time, experiencing love and what that feels like."

She joined the line-up in a record-breaking year for Glastonbury Festival, as it featured two female headliners for the first time.

Shania Twain also appeared in the legends slot - someone Avril actually performed with after winning a competition in 1998.

She would go on to get a record deal after this appearance.

"I looked up to [Shania] growing up - I sang on stage with her when I was 14 years old, so be here tonight, that personally means a lot".

If there's one thing to take from Sunday at Glastonbury, it would have been great to see Avril joining Shania Twain as a Pyramid stage performer.

Although Avril says she is "just a girl from a small town in Canada," her fans certainly don't see her that way.

HIVE

AVRIL LAVIGNE - LONDON, UK.

Avril Lavigne at the Alexandra Palace, London, UK (09/05/2023) . With support from Phem .

Three years and a venue change later, Avril Lavigne finally played the first of her two shows at the legendary Alexandra Palace. There was no unanimous demographic, but one thing in common- most people there probably owned a studded belt at some point in their life.

In true 2000s style, she rose from under the stage clutching a handful of black balloons. Launching straight into ‘ Bite me ’, a new release from 2022 album ‘ Love Sux ’. Avril wasted no time in creating an atmosphere like no other, going into ‘ What The Hell ’ straight after and subsequently sending the crowd wild. She slowed things down with fan favourite ‘ Complicated ’, which was well received by the crowd, clutching their friends and singing every word to the heartbreak anthem. She continued through her set with a rapid speed and energy like no other, and even showed off  her drumming skills with an impressive instrumental version of ‘ It Was In Me ’.

Avril made the most of her time in the UK by covering ‘ Wannabe ’ by Spice Girls, joined onstage by several fans and opening act Phem . Soon after she teased the introduction to 2007’s ‘ Girlfriend ’, leaving the crowd screaming along each with one person in mind as they sang. Then followed ‘ Love It When You Hate Me ’ featuring blackbear on the screen. Then, Finally, it was time for the song that started everything for all of us there- the reason I started wearing eyeliner, the reason we all wore ties outside of school- ‘ Sk8er Boi’ . There was not a single person still as the blueprint of 2000s pop punk blasted through the palace with a feeling of nostalgia and reminiscence on teenage years.

The show felt as if it had lasted 5 minutes but it was was nearly over. Before we knew it,  Avril left the stage for the encore which gave the crowd a few minutes to process that the show they had been waiting for finally happened. After a majestic underwater display on the screen, she returned to the stage one more time to play ‘ Head Above Water ’, before blessing long- time fans with ‘ I’m With You ’. Finally, Avril ended the show with ‘ Here’s To Never Growing Up ’, the perfect end to a nostalgic, teenage- anthem filled night. It’s rare to see a show where the audience is captivated by someone’s every move. Its safe to say that we’re all jealous of everyone at the second show, and  those lucky enough to get tickets for both nights. Trust me when I say, you don’t want to miss the next Avril Lavigne show, even if you have to wait three years for it.

Pop-punk legend Avril Lavigne finally brought her Love Sux Tour to London for the first of two huge sold-out shows at Alexandra Palace. After numerous postponements and a venue change, Avril’s fans were eager to see her take to the stage. The fans screamed with anticipation as the lights dimmed and the screen began displaying an intro video reflecting on the singers career. As the video come to an end Avril took to the stage on a platform above the drummer and kicks off the show with “Bite Me” from her 2022 album Love Sux . The setlist included many fan favourites from the early years of Avril’s career, including “Complicated”, “Girlfriend” and of course “Sk8er Boi” which ended with a blast of confetti. She also played some new song as well as playing classics including Yungblud collab “I’m a Mess”, Blackbear collab “Love It When You Hate Me” and of course the song that named the tour “Love Sux”.  To conclude such a huge night Lavigne performed “Here’s To Never Growing Up”, which had the audience singing the lyrics back to the singer loudly. Phem opened up the and certainly warmed up the crowd ahead of the headliner, and even joined Avril on stage for a cover of the Spice Girls “Wannabe”.

Avril Lavigne review, Glastonbury 2024: Another artist plonked on far too small a stage

This is a brilliant show, but glastonbury must learn lessons from a year that has vastly underestimated the appeal of pop nostalgia, article bookmarked.

There comes a point at Glastonbury 2024 where it becomes easier to give up about a mile away from the stage.

Much like Sugababes’ overcrowded set, the grouchy, nostalgic pop-punk queen Avril Lavigne is one of the festival’s must-see acts, yet is shoved on a too-small stage in front of an overwhelming sea of people. Janelle Monae, over on the Pyramid Stage at the exact same time, is the unlucky recipient of poor planning – a genius pop star performing to a barely-there crowd. It’s not great.

In difficult circumstances, crowd-control at Glastonbury do a brilliant job, keeping everyone safe and herding thousands of people in front of the Other Stage and the surrounding areas. Everybody seems to be able to see, and – unlike the Sugababes over at West Holts on Thursday – there are no reports of people being told to back away. Lavigne herself is overwhelmed.

“I can’t believe it’s taken me 22 years to play Glastonbury,” she says. “It’s about time.”

This is a brilliant show, but Glastonbury must learn lessons from a year that has vastly underestimated the appeal of pop nostalgia, and overestimated the interest in many performing over at the Pyramid.

That said, there is something incredibly special about being, more or less, a million miles away from the Other Stage and singing in unison with a small country of people in their late twenties and early thirties, to whom Lavigne is something of a god.

Lavigne retains the laconic performance style that has always defined her

All of us stuffed at the back of the crowd, near the food vendors and the toilets, know absolutely every word of an artist who, for all the cynical mockery she experienced at the beginning of her early fame, directly spoke to a generation.

“Did anyone here have a copy of my first album, Let Go?, ” Lavigne asks at one point. It takes some resistance for the crowd to not scream back, “Duh”.

Lavigne is now 39, but retains the laconic, vaguely petulant performance style that has always defined her. She moves slowly across the stage, sings powerfully but largely statically. “Here’s to never growing up”, she once sang. She was at least being honest.

“Girlfriend” kicks things off with bratty brilliance, before Lavigne segues into “What the Hell”, another mid-career track about as synonymous with a particular moment in time as a My Chemical Romance patch and far too much brain power spent ranking the Wentz brothers.

There are more sing-alongs to the evocative rock ballad “My Happy Ending”, and a massive, audible “aww” when the beautiful strings first kick in for “I’m with You”, one of those formidable gut-wrenchers comfortably sitting in the new millennium power ballad canon.

Avril Lavigne kicks up a storm on the Other Stage at Glastonbury Festival 2024

There is a rich power to the plainness of Lavigne’s lyrics, which resist flowery metaphor in favour of direct translation of commonplace woe: “Isn’t anyone trying to find me?/ Won’t somebody come take me home?” she sings on “I’m with You”.

“It’s a damn cold night / Trying to figure out this life…”

She’s never been considered much of a songwriter, or even particularly important in the grand scheme of coming-of-age music, but it’d be lovely if her Glastonbury set serves as a reminder of her appeal and her importance.

“Sk8r Boi” – that genius combination of head-banging brilliance and deep Y2K cringe – brings the set to a close, Lavigne grinning from ear to ear. Even pop-punk’s greatest miserabilist can’t resist the joy radiating from this crowd.

Avril Lavigne Reschedules 2022 European Tour To 2023

See her new tour dates below.

Avril Lavigne has once again rescheduled her upcoming 2022 European tour in support of her 2019 album Head Above Water and upcoming Love Sux album . Originally scheduled to take place in 2020, the dates were rescheduled for 2021, then for spring 2022, and have been pushed for the third time to 2023 due to ongoing restrictions.

Lavigne will now be hitting the road from April through May 2023, stopping at major cities in Italy, Germany, and the U.K., including three shows in London and one in Manchester. Lavigne will still be playing some live shows in 2022 but only in her home country of Canada. Her Bite Me 2022 Canada Tour, kicking off May 3 is still set to happen.

Lavigne released Head Above Water in 2019 as her sixth studio album, and the latest full-length release since her 2013 self-titled album. The 12-track record was written about her battle with Lyme disease, a diagnosis that she revealed to the public in 2015. “I was bedridden for five months,” she told People magazine about the severity of her symptoms at the time. “I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk and I couldn’t move[...] I thought I was dying.”

In the time since, Lavigne has experienced a resurgence with her career timed alongside a pop-punk renaissance in pop culture. In 2020, she released new music with her boyfriend, MOD SUN, and Willow, the youngest Smith. Their very 2000s music video for their joint track “G R O W” was released in 2021. Lavigne has also been gearing up to release her anticipated next album titled Love Sux which will usher in a return to her pop-punk roots and is expected to drop on Feb. 25.

Avril Lavigne postpones UK and European tour to 2023

"it really breaks my heart to have to do this, but i know it will be worth the wait".

By Hollie Geraghty

Avril Lavigne has postponed her upcoming UK and European tour to 2023, citing issues surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement shared to the singer’s social media, she wrote: “To my fans in Europe and the UK, I have some unfortunate news to share with you all about my UK and European dates.

“I have to make the difficult decision to postpone this tour until 2023. Due to the on-going issues surrounding the pandemic, there are a series of travel and venue restrictions from country to country that have made the tour not possible to happen.”

She continued: “It’s not an easy decision, but it’s one that will help ensure that we are able to play every single date of the tour, put on the best show possible at full capacity, and operate in a safe environment.

“It really breaks my heart to have to do this, but I know it will be worth the wait.”

All tour dates have now been rescheduled to April-May 2023, and existing tickets are still valid for the new dates.

The Canadian singer was due to play one Manchester show and three London dates.

Her new album, ‘Love Sux’ is due to be released February 25 via Travis Barker’s label DTA Records. It will see features from Blink-182′ s Mark Hoppus , Machine Gun Kelly and blackbear.

In December the singer also announced plans to adapt her iconic 2002 hit ‘Sk8r Boi’ into a feature film.

Speaking on the podcast  She Is The Voice  on iHeartRadio, Lavigne discussed the track’s upcoming two-decade anniversary this September.

“Recently with it being almost the 20th anniversary, a lot of people have been asking me to play this song on TV shows, so it keeps getting brought back up and people will always reference it to me,” she said. “And so, I’m actually going to turn this song into a film and take it to the next level.”

Discussing the origins of the track, she said: “You know what it was like in high school, you have all the different groups and cliques, and there’s like skaters, preps and jocks.” She added: “It’s kind of like a missed opportunity at love.

“The skater boy is in love with the preppy girl and she’s too cool for him but then five years from now she’s feeding the baby and she’s all alone and she wishes she would have followed her heart and not tried to live up to society’s expectations.”

Avril Lavigne postpones Love Sux UK and European tour to 2023

Avril Lavigne’s planned 2022 UK and European run has been pushed back a year due to a “series of travel and venue restrictions from country to country that have made the tour not possible to happen”.

Avril Lavigne postpones Love Sux UK and European tour to 2023

While Avril Lavigne 's new album Love Sux is due out soon, unfortunately fans in the UK and Europe are going to have to wait over a year now to hear it live.

The singer's planned 19-date February and March run will now be happening in April and May 2023, with the blame for this postponement of course falling to the pandemic, and the many different restrictions in place.

"I have some unfortunate news to share with you all about my UK and European dates," reads a statement from Avril. "I have to make the difficult decision to postpone this tour until 2023. Due to the ongoing issues surrounding the pandemic, there are a series of travel and venue restrictions from country to country that have made the tour not possible to happen.

"It’s not an easy decision, but it’s one that will help ensure that we are able to play every single date of the tour, put on the best show possible at full capacity, and operate in a safe environment. It breaks my heart to do this, but I know it will be worth the wait.

"The tour is now rescheduled for April – May 2023. All existing tickets are valid for the new dates."

The National, Jungle, Tom Grennan and Avril Lavigne are playing at the Sounds of the City festival at Castlefield Bowl this month

  • 14:24, 1 JUL 2024

Sounds of the City returns to Castlefield Bowl this month, with shows from the likes of Hacienda Classical, Avril Lavigne and Fatboy Slim

Sounds of the City returns to Castlefield Bowl this year with a stellar line-up featuring dance acts, 2000s pop-rock and classic indie hits.

Over the years, the summer concert series has featured performances from some of the biggest names in music, including Lewis Capaldi, Sam Fender, Kylie Minogue and Elbow. 2023’s line-up included The Lathums, Pulp, Hozier and Blossoms.

This year, Sounds of the City will see headline performances from the likes of Avril Lavigne, Manic Street Preachers, Fatboy Slim, Jungle and Tom Grennan across eight shows this month.

READ MORE: When is Glastonbury 2025 and how to get tickets for next year's festival

The shows will kick off on July 3 with Avril Lavigne, and will conclude on July 13 with a performance from Hacienda Classical featuring iconic dance anthems reimagined by a full orchestra.

Whilst the majority of the shows have now sold out, there are some limited tickets available via Ticketmaster . If you’re one of the lucky few that already has tickets to these special set of shows, then we’ve got the details you need to know - including getting there, support acts and which artist is performing when.

Castlefield Bowl returns for another year of live music, with eight shows this month

We are currently still waiting for set times from the promoters. Last year’s Sounds of the City shows saw doors open at 5.30pm, with most headliners taking to the stage between 8pm and 9pm. We will update details when we get confirmation for each show.

Some resale tickets will be available for a number of the shows. As always, it is important to note that many event promoters say tickets, sold on sites like Viagogo and Vivid Seats as two examples, should not be resold after initial purchase and will not be valid for admittance to gigs.

Fans attending live events with tickets acquired through resale websites are advised to double check the ticket terms and conditions at the point of sale - such as Ticketmaster or Live Nation - to ensure a smooth live event experience. Tickets could be voided if they were found to be bought second-hand. As a result, fans are buying at their own risk.

Avril Lavigne recently wowed crowds at Glastonbury 2024

Glastonbury 2024: 18 Highlights You Might Have Missed

Daniel Welsh

Entertainment Editor

A selection of this year's stand-out Glastonbury performers

With so much to keep up with crammed into the space of just one weekend, even the most avid of music fans will struggle to stay on top of everything that goes on at Glastonbury.

The iconic festival took place over the weekend, and while you might have heard about Dua Lipa, SZA and Coldplay’s headlining performances, as well as Shania Twain’s appearance in the coveted “legends” slot, other acts further down the bill may have passed you by a little.

Luckily for you, we’ve got you covered.

Here are 18 stand-out moments from Glastonbury 2024 that you might not have spotted at the time…

Michael Eavis kicks things off in style

What a moment ❤️ Sir Michael Eavis has made his first appearance at #Glastonbury Festival 2024 with a performance on the Park Stage. The festival founder sang "My Way", "Suspicious Minds" & "It Was A Very Good Year". pic.twitter.com/yvGNrn0EzT — BBC Somerset (@bbcsomerset) June 27, 2024

As has become a long-held tradition, Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis was the first person to perform, before the actual festival got underway on Friday.

This year, he decided to channel the crooners of old with renditions of the melancholic ballads My Way and It Was A Very Good Year, as well as covering Elvis Presley’s more upbeat Suspicious Minds.

Olivia Dean sets the tone for the rest of the weekend

Crowd lighting up for Olivia Dean on the Pyramid stage! Supremely confident! She’s going to be a star! #oliviadean #glastonbury2024 pic.twitter.com/mmi2Uer9ab — Jonathan Boyers (@jmboyers) June 28, 2024

When you’re one of the first acts on the Pyramid Stage, it’s essential that you bring the energy – and Olivia Dean more than delivered.

The second act on the festival’s iconic main stage on Friday afternoon, she had the crowd in the palm of her hand, and undoubtedly won herself a legion of new fans and supporters in the process.

Seventeen make Glastonbury history

#SEVENTEEN ; making history at glastonbury pic.twitter.com/Nkq05EHCWN — eL pash-rahin (@1004jejebean) June 30, 2024

While Glastonbury traditions are an important part of what makes the festival so special, one thing you have to praise co-organiser Emily Eavis for is the way she’s also always trying to bring something new to the event.

This year marked a landmark moment for both Glasto and K-pop, as boyband Seventeen became the genre’s first act to ever perform on the Pyramid Stage, keeping the good vibes coming straight after Olivia Dean’s set.

And speaking of good vibes on the Friday afternoon – Sugababes famously shut down the Avalon tent when they performed back in 2022 with a set that’s still revered two years later.

This time around they were boosted up to the West Holts Stage, where they once again reminded everyone why they’re one of the UK’s most beloved girl groups of all time, whizzing through a set packed with hits that also looked to the future (the three-piece recently teased new music during an interview with BBC News leading up to their Glasto performance).

Taking a moment to make a serious political point during her Friday set, Norwegian singer Aurora called out the leaders of the world for “fucking us all over, again and again”.

More specifically, she dedicated her set to the children of Palestine, Sudan, Congo and Yemen.

Glastonbury fans were spoilt for choice when it came to Friday’s Headliners, with Dua Lipa’s Pyramid Stage set clashing with Jungle on the West Holts Stage

Idles’ politically-charged set included leading the crowd in a mass chant of “fuck the King”. The group also lambasted Nigel Farage, made an impassioned display of solidarity with migrants and were one of several acts who explicitly called for a ceasefire in the Middle East.

Let’s just address the elephant in the room here – yes, there were sound issues at various points

Glastonbury has let down a lot of its biggest female acts this year. SZA should have been Fri or Sat headliner, Avril, Janelle and Sugababes on bigger stages, Shania and Cyndi without being plagued by sound issues. — Roisin O'Connor (@Roisin_OConnor) June 30, 2024

Most notably during SZA, Cyndi Lauper and Shania Twain’s sets (but also Dua Lipa’s), many viewers watching the coverage at home complained about the sound quality, which affected several of the artists’ overall performances.

So we’ve got nothing but praise for all of those artists for soldiering on despite the issues, completing their sets in front of thousands in person and millions watching at home.

Avril Lavigne Takes a Break From Touring for Couture Week

PARIS FRANCE JUNE 24 Avril Lavigne attends the Iris Van Herpen Haute Couture FallWinter 20242025 show as part of Paris...

For Avril Lavigne , nothing is complicated about Paris. “My father was born here," she tells Vogue. "I used to live here and I took French classes, so I actually know the city very well. I feel very connected to Paris.”

Just days after she released her Greatest Hits record, Lavigne took to Paris for Iris van Herpen’s museum-like fall 2024 couture show . Straight from the Southside Festival in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, she hopped right into glam. “I got in and had a crêpe, French toast, and a cappuccino,” she says. While this may be her first couture show of the season, Lavigne is no stranger to fashion week. “My first time at Paris Fashion Week was a Chanel show and it was so wonderful. I hung out with Karl Lagerfeld and went to visit the Coco Chanel apartment,” she recalls. “I did my own hair and makeup that trip and kept it very minimal, and enjoyed wearing such iconic, beautiful garments.”

This time around, the Sk8r Boi singer is trading in her miniskirt and combat boots for a sculptural black-and-white piece by van Herpen. “I love to go extra for a fashion show and really experiment with new hairstyles and more experimental makeup looks. And I am willing to try anything wild and out there clothing wise! It’s all about having an open mind,” she says. As for what drew her to this specific dress? “It was a very different silhouette and fabric than I am used to which made it fun.”

Below, Avril Lavigne brought Vogue along as she attended the Iris van Herpen fall 2024 couture show in Paris.

Glastonbury 2024: SZA closes festival amid technical issues as attendees face huge queues to leave site

LIVE – Updated at 17:36

R&B artist SZA closed Glastonbury Festival 2024 , after Shania Twain took on the coveted Legends Slot.

The Grammy-winning star appeared to have a much smaller audience than earlier headliners Coldplay and Dua Lipa, as revellers rushed home to beat traffic and amid four other major stage clashes.

Earlier, pop-punk singer Avril Lavigne tore up the Other Stage with a set comprising hits such as “Sk8r Boi” and “My Happy Ending”, while Shania Twain suffered with sound issues on the Legends Slot.

On Saturday night, rock band Coldplay headlined the Pyramid Stage for a record-breaking fifth time, after pop star Dua Lipa dazzled the crowds on Friday (28 June).

In a career-spanning set , the band performed a number of their biggest hits including “Yellow” and “Clocks”, while also bringing out a number of surprise guests including rapper Little Simz, singer Laura Mvula, and Back to the Future star Michael J Fox.

Performance artist Marina Abramovich , given a brief slot on the Pyramid Stage ahead of PJ Harvey, claims she wants the entire field to engage in seven minutes of silence while she stands onstage dressed as a giant peace symbol because “the world is a really s***** place”.

Bombay Bicycle Club , seeping over from the Other Stage, clearly didn’t get the memo, but the contemplative break also gives Glastonbury pause from Sugababes’ “Round Round” to recalibrate itself to Harvey’s enthralling modern-ancient aesthetic.

As Emily Eavis bangs a gong to mark the end of the silence, Polly Jean seems to rise from the leyline itself dressed as a haunted crow tree, and in these fittingly mystical environs, the latest stage in her career-long, Bowie-esque evolution reaches its immersive conclusion.

The last dinner party review, glastonbury 2024: ambitious band deliver a thrilling set on the other stage.

This is a pivotal set for The Last Dinner Party, on the Other Stage on Saturday afternoon at Glastonbury under a blazing sun. The London-based female five-piece’s rise has been meteoric – 15 months ago I saw them play in a windowless room above a pub in Camden, while last summer they performed in a far-flung tent at breakfast time on the Sunday. And here they are today, playing to a crowd of tens of thousands, with a No 1 album and a Brit Award under their collective belts.

I’d slightly expected their set to be this year’s Fred Again.. moment: a confluence of big crowd energy and beautiful weather during the DJ’s set on the same stage last year made it a fabled “Glastonbury moment” – a weird bit of Somerset alchemy that renders a performance bigger than the sum of its parts. Do The Last Dinner Party achieve this? No. It’s close at times and they brim with confidence. But too often, their set hovers where it could soar.

Coldplay review, Glastonbury 2024: Chris Martin and co deliver the spectacle of a lifetime

If archaeologists ever excavate the leyline reputed to flow beneath the Pyramid Stage field, it will likely look like this. A shimmering ocean of 200,000 luminous neon specks, undulating across the vale to the sound of twinkling synth rock.

Tonight’s spectacular preview comes courtesy of the vast array of LED wristbands handed out across the site and waved aloft for 2024’s reluctant record-breakers . As much as Chris Martin copiously thanks “the greatest city on earth” for the chance to play, Glastonbury is lucky to have him.

Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres tour hits Glastonbury almost three years in, having been through the UK twice already. The band reportedly had to be talked into a record-breaking fifth Glasto headline show that might reasonably be considered overkill. The Elton-rivalling crowd who make the utterly glorious “Viva La Vida” one of the most unifying and celebratory moments ever to emanate from this hallowed stage, though, are very much up for being overkilled.

Shania Twain to take on the Pyramid Stage Legends Slot

Hello, it’s the Number One Shania Twain fan here. Obviously I’m gutted not to be on site for the country-pop queen’s long-overdue Legends Slot, but I’m consoling myself with the thought of seeing her at British Summer Time festival in July, instead.

If you are down at Worthy Farm, though, you’re going to have one hell of a time. Twain is the consumate entertainer and has an unmatched catalogue of bangers, from “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” to “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and “Honey, I’m Home”.

My pal Nicole Vassell says there is a LOT of leopard print on site right now, along with plenty of cowboy boots, hats and fringed denim jackets.

Damn, Shania seems to be having similar issues to Cyndi Lauper on the Saturday... she’s about a beat out of time with the band for much of the time? She’s an absolute pro, so she’s not letting it show, but there’s been some fiddling with her in-ears and mic pack for the first bit of the set.

What bbc viewers are saying about shania.

“I think it’s a technical / sound issue ... she’s constantly fiddling with her in ear and even the speaking sounds off and cutting out,” one fan suggested. “Poor Shania, maybe a wired microphone would be better. Surely they could swap it out.”

Other fans defended the “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” singer, pointing out that she still managed to entertain the thousands of people gathered at the Pyramid Stage.

“What a fantastic artist,” one fan wrote, while another praised her backing dancers and band.

Twain has sold over 100 million records, making her one of the biggest-selling artists of all time.

Glastonbury revellers tune into england v slovakia game.

Our Head of Culture and Lifestyle, Patrick Smith, just sent me this image from Worthy Farm of revellers gathered around a screen playing the England v Slovakia game.

Organisers announced last month that they wouldn’t be showing the match, to the despair of thousands of football fans who’d already bought their Glastonbury tickets.

Obviously, some intrepid folk have managed to get around that, either by bringing their own TV screens or managing to get some semblance of Wi-Fi or 4G on site.

Dua Lipa review, Glastonbury 2024: More than mere pop spectacle

Dua Lipa saw it coming. The fireworks and flags and pulsing purple lights, the teenagers on tiptoes scowling at strange adults as they fling their arms in the air like money. When she was a girl, the 28-year-old born to Albanian-Kosovan parents, tells us midway into her debut Glastonbury headline show, she wrote it down – “I will headline Glastonbury” – manifesting the sleeper hits and critical acclaim and now routine awards and No 1s that made this moment inevitable.

“I was really specific,” she adds after a shy laugh. “I said I wanted to headline the Pyramid Stage on a Friday night, because then I knew I could party for the next two days.” Her voice cracks as she describes the magic – “the power” – of commanding this seemingly infinite crowd. “Little me would just be beside herself right now.”

The growing Dua Lipa empire – now encompassing an acting career, a book club, a burgeoning media platform and a podcast featuring giants of high and low culture – shows no signs of slowing, particularly now she has bought back the rights to her music catalogue. Yet behind the cultural dominance, Dua Lipa is as enigmatic as she is ubiquitous. Her arrestingly vague persona (along, perhaps, with her admirable support for geopolitical causes) has stopped her transcending bankable fame to become a true nation’s sweetheart.

Alvvays review, woodsies, sunday at glastonbury.

Shoegaze - that mystery wrapped in an enigma encased in a conundrum enveloped in a vast amount of hypnogogic drug noise - appears to have finally been solved.

With their last (third) album Blue Rev, Canada’s Alvvays struck the perfect balance between oceanic pedalboard alchemy and alt-pop hooks, and they bring several cathedrals’ worth to Woodsies on Sunday afternoon.

It’s a glorious noise they make, whether weaving vast pop dreamscapes on “Belinda Says”, punking out (vaporously) on “Pomeranian Spinster” or spying on your saddest teenage daydream on “Dreams Tonight”.

It’s still “Archie, Marry Me” - the ultimate indie first dance - that lifts the tent but Molly Rankin’s sublime troupe are fast becoming the finest alt-pop band in this or any other dimension.

This is a brilliant show, but Glastonbury must learn lessons from a year that has vastly underestimated the appeal of pop nostalgia, writes Adam White

Sugababes review, Glastonbury 2024: Shoving them on West Holts was misguided at best, irresponsible at worst

The Sugababes’ set at Glastonbury , an unexpected must-see for, anecdotally at least, absolutely every person with a ticket, quickly became its own kind of hell. Signs near the West Holts stage urged latecomers to stay away due to overcrowding. Unverified reports say there were people fainting in the crowd.

This was pointless, easily avoidable chaos. In terms of current chart success or creativity at this particular moment in time, Sugababes may not be Pyramid stage material, but for many punters here they tick numerous boxes: nostalgia, bangers, brand recognition. Shoving them over on West Holts is misguided at best, irresponsible at worst.

On stage at least, the band appear to be having a blast. There’s something incredibly affecting about seeing this trio smile.

Louis Tomlinson became the unexpected hero of many a Glastonbury attendee, after he brought a TV set to Worthy Farm to play the England v Slovakia Euro 2024 game.

Football fans with tickets to the Worthy Farm festival were gutted after organisers announced that they wouldn’t be showing the tense match on-site, due to fears that it would clash with Sunday’s performances.

But the former One Direction star and solo artist apparently took matters into his own hands, and was seen commanding the remote as England went onto win 2-1 and advance to the quarter-finals.

Tomlinson, a noted rock fan who was spotted enjoying live music performances across the weekend, was pictured sitting directly in front of the screen while surrounded by fellow England supporters.

He celebrated as Jude Bellingham took the match to extra time in the 95th minute, then again when Harry Kane scored England’s second goal that secured their victory.

Dua Lipa addresses accusations of lip-syncing after Glastonbury headline performance

Dua Lipa has addressed false claims she mimed her Glastonbury 2024 headline set.

The British pop star was the first headliner of this year’s festival, impressing the crowd with her Pyramid Stage set on Friday night (Friday 28 June) at Worthy Farm, one day before Coldplay graced the stage for their record-breaking fifth headline set to a 100,000-strong crowd.

However, as Dua Lipa performed her songs, including “Training Season”, “New Rules” and “Levitating”, many viewers watching her set from their sofas at home accused the singer of miming her vocals.

The sweet reason Coldplay played with Michael J Fox at Glastonbury

Coldplay have revealed the sweet reason they brought Michael J Fox on stage at Glastonbury .

On Saturday (29 June), the British band became the first act to headline the festival for the fifth time , surpassing a record they previously set alongside The Cure.

During their performance, which The Independent hailed as a “spectacle of a lifetime” , frontman Chris Martin introduced several surprise stars , including Palestinian-Chilean singer Elyanna .

But it was the unexpected inclusion of Back to the Future star Fox that stole the show. The actor, who has Parkinson’s disease, received a rapturous response from the 100,000-strong crowd, and played guitar alongside the band for two tracks: “Humankind” and “Fix You”.

Sza to close glastonbury 2024.

Glastonbury 2024 drawsto a close on Sunday night, after a packed weekend of live performances and debates ahead of next week’s general election.

The annual festival at Worthy Farm will leave festival-goers with lingering questions about the fate of both the music industry and the UK, as organiser Emily Eavis defended what many deemed to be an underwhelming lineup.

Some argued that booking Coldplay, returning to headline for a record-breaking fifth time, was a cop-out. Others scratched their heads over SZA, arguably a much bigger star in her native US than here in the UK. Dua Lipa’s latest album, meanwhile, had failed to produce the kind of megawatt hit that promised to get the Pyramid Stage crowd energised.

The Independent’s critics disagreed with that consensus. Covering the 28-year-old Lipa’s set, Jazz Monroe praised the pop singer for her moments of “cheeky theatricality” and a celebration of alternative culture that saw her bring out a “comically low-key guest”, Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, who produced her latest record Radical Optimism.

Mark Beaumont gave Coldplay’s Saturday night show five stars, moved by a surprise appearance by Back to the Future star Michael J Fox during a poignant rendition of “Fix You”, as well as guest performances from Laura Mvula and rapper Little Simz.

Some sets were blighted by sound issues. Glastonbury did a disservice to two of its veteran performers, Shania Twain and Cyndi Lauper, as both artists appeared to be affected by technical difficulties during their own performances on the Pyramid Stage.

In the Legends Slot on Sunday, country-pop star Twain was seen fiddling with her mic box and in-ears, as she gestured repeatedly to the sound crew. However, this was resolved when she was practically drowned out by the euphoric singalong to “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” as the closing song in her set.

SZA is opening to a woefully thin crowd on the Pyramid Stage

This is my... eighth? year of covering Glastonbury for The Independent and I don’t recall ever seeing such a small crowd for a Pyramid Stage headliner.

Despite selling out four O2 Arena shows last year, SZA was already expected to draw less of an audience for her Sunday spot, in part simply because people tend to head home on the Sunday night to avoid traffic.

But this is still somewhat embarassing (for Glastonbury -- SZA has absolutely no reason to be embarassed). They’ve put her up against four pretty sizeable clashes: The National on the Other Stage, Justice on West Holts, James Blake on Woodsies and London Grammar on the Park Stage, all either at the same time or within 30 minutes of SZA’s set.

I’m willing to bet a lot of people who skipped her show will come to regret it...

Readers, I am a bit mad at Glastonbury right now

OK, so obviously I have absolutely zero clue about the logistics required to curate a festival. I can only imagine it’s a right pain in the arse. BUT, I just cannot get my head around the fact that organisers lumped three major artists (Janelle Monae, Burna Boy, SZA) on the Pyramid Stage on a Sunday with major shows happening on the other stages. The fact that all three artists are Black isn’t a good look, either, given Glastonbury’s history of booking overwhelming white headliners.

It also doesn’t help that SZA is currently blowing Dua Lipa’s set out of the water, regardless of crowd size. She’s got that star wattage that Dua lacks no matter how hard she tries. The R&B singer has charisma to spare, not to mention those sublime vocals.
