12 Most Scenic Lakes in Austria

By Vanessa Holmes · Last updated on February 5, 2024

Austria may be a landlocked nation, but it does have several stunning bodies of water. There are many lakes in Austria, and they are popular both with travelers and local residents. Whether you want to soak in some waterfront views or make a splash under the shadow of the Alps, Austrian lakes fit the bill.

If you’re fortunate enough to head to Austria sometime soon, plan to visit at least one of these incredible lakes in the country.

12. Plansee

Plansee

Lake Plansee, found in the Tyrol region of Austria, is a large body of water connected to another lake, called the Heiterwang, via a canal. That makes the Plansee a popular spot for boating, since the lakes are both accessible via several rivers.

The lake is an unparalleled spot for outdoor enthusiasts, and miles of paved pathways are ideal for jogging, cycling and inline skating. Surrounded by the Lechtal Alps, you can also scuba dive or go fishing for trout and perch. There are also passenger ferries available that cross the lake.

11. Traunsee

Traunsee

Another of the lakes in the Salzkammergut region is the Traunsee. This expansive lake is popular for outdoor activity, but it is best known for having its own underwater mythical creature called the Lungy, which may be comparable to the stories of the Loch Ness Monster in Scotland.

There are also countless attractions on the shores of the Traunsee that include villages like Altmünster and Traunkirchen as well as Schloss Ort, an amazing medieval castle.

10. Millstatter See

Millstatter See

In the Carinthia region of Austria is the Millstatter See, whose steep shoreline makes it look just like a fjord. Helping to create the incredible terrain are the Nock Mountains and the Drava Valley, and the Hochgosch area to the south is wooded, creating even more lush greenery and visual interest.

The mountains protect the lake from cold winter winds, which means that the water temperature is suitable for swimming during the summer. Don’t miss the village of Millstatt next to the lake, which is home to an amazingly preserved 11th century abbey.

9. Gruner See

Gruner See

Just outside of a village called Tragöß is the Gruner See, which translates literally to the Green Lake. The name is no mistake, and the waters of the lake are a vibrant green color with incredible visibility.

The water is comprised of melted snow from the Karst Mountains, so even in the summers the temperature is very cold. However, the Gruner See is a remarkable sight, and it is even possible to go scuba diving in the lake with a local guide and a wet suit.

8. Weissensee

Weissensee

In the Gailtal Alps is the Weissensee, or White Lake. This glacial lake is an incredibly popular destination for all types of activities, and a ban on private motor boats means it retains its peaceful atmosphere and abundance of wildlife.

In the summer, visitors can ride on passenger boats across the lake, canoe on its surface, fish for trout and perch and hike around the shores. In the winters, a spot next to the Weissensee becomes a prime skiing area, and there are even speed-skating competitions on parts of the lake.

7. Faaker See

Faaker See

The Faaker See is considered to be the lake in Austria with the cleanest, most drinkable water. As you might imagine, that means the water quality is incredible, and there is plenty of visibility throughout the lake.

There are several beaches on the Faaker See where you can pay a small fee to relax, swim and soak up the sun. The lake is also a hub for events, including the annual European Bike Week, which is the largest rally of motorcycles on the continent. Fishing is also a popular pastime, and ice skating is a thrill when the lake freezes during the winter.

6. Worthersee

Worthersee

To find this stunning lake, head to the region of Carinthia in Austria . As early as the 19th century, the Austrian aristocracy have been spending their summers on the Wörthersee, which definitely encouraged Austrians and visitors alike to relax on the lake’s shores.

The Wörthersee boasts some of the warmest waters in the country, which makes the lake the perfect swimming spot in summer. You can rent a bicycle from the small city of Pörtschach to tour the region, and there are also seasonal summer ferries that take passengers across the lake to various destinations.

Mondsee

Mondsee is one of the largest privately owned lakes in Austria, and it is a stunning retreat that lets visitors escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Mentioned in a James Bond novel, Mondsee is the epitome of scenic.

From vantage points around the shore, you can see the Northern Limestone Alps and the Northern Sandstone Alps. From the town of Mondsee on the shores of the lake with the same name, you can also get a full view of the mountain known as Drachenwand, or Dragon Wall.

4. Achensee

Achensee

The largest lake in the Austrian district of Tyrol is Achensee, which also goes by the nickname Fjord of the Alps. The lake itself is stunning, thanks in part to the location right at the base of a mountain. However, it is the color and clarity of the water that makes it such an unusual and unforgettable destination.

The Achensee can look green or aquamarine, and in parts you can see up to 10 meter (30 feet) down. Top ways to enjoy the scenery include sailing and windsurfing on the lake, which is popular thanks to windy conditions, as well as hiking nearby at the Bärenkopf Mountain for panoramic views of the lake.

3. Wolfgangsee

Wolfgangsee

The Salzkammergut is a resort region near Salzburg where people from around the world flock for the lush green landscape and the abundance of spectacular lakes. One of the best is known as the Wolfgangsee. The lake is named for the 10th century Saint Wolfgang, who allegedly built a church near the lake’s shores more than 1,000 years ago.

For the best views over the lake, ride the railway called the Schafbergbahn to the peak of the Schafberg itself, which gives you incredible perspective over the waters of the Wolfgangsee.

2. Zeller See

Zeller See

In the Austrian Alps is the Zellersee, or Lake Zell, which is a relatively small but beautiful freshwater lake. Because of its size, Zellersee freezes in the winter, making it perfect for year-round fun. During the summer, you can swim, fish or kayak in the clear water of the lake.

In the winter, expect crowds of locals skating across the frozen surface of the Zellersee. The lake is named after the nearby town Zell am See, which is home to a stunning 16th century castle as well as an impressive church built in the Romanesque style.

1. Hallstatter See

Hallstatter See

Lake Hallstatt, or the Hallstatter See, is another of the many lakes in the region of Salzkammergut. The lake is surrounded by mountains, creating a picturesque oasis. On the banks of the Hallstatter See is the famous town of Hallstatt, which boasts traditional Austrian architecture and charming attractions.

The Hallstatter See is best seen from a hike in the mountains, but those who want a unique perspective can also take scuba diving lessons with a guide from Hallstatt.

Attractions:

This delightful lakeside town perches steeply by the shore of shimmering Lake Wolfgang. Backed by the deep green of the alpine forest, it is known for the impressive carved altar in its waterside church. St Wolfgang is also home to the Schafberg Mountain Railway, an unforgettable cog railway which makes a steep climb, affording stunning panoramic views of the lake.

The beautiful baroque city of Salzburg is endlessly charming throughout the seasons. Whether it’s basking in sunshine or sparkling in the snow, Salzburg’s turreted skyline rises prettily and is topped by the indomitable Hohensalzburg Fortress. Salzburg’s old town has a maze of medieval alleyways, was Mozart’s birthplace, and is home to the elegant Mirabell Gardens.

Gateway to the Salzkammergut region, the beautiful spa town of Bad Ischl is packed with charm – so much so, that this was where the emperors of the Austro-Hungarian Empire chose to spend their summers. Kaiservilla was the imperial summer residence of Franz Joseph I and hosted the cream of Europe’s aristocracy during his reign – and it’s also from here that he declared war with Serbia, thus providing the catalyst for World War I. Today, the tranquil, elegant villa evokes the grandeur of the 19 th century with its buttery-hued neoclassical facade.

Picture-postcard Hallstatt is dwarfed by the majestic Dachstein Mountains at its back. The tiny settlement is mirrored in the clear lakewaters of Hallstätter See, doubling the prettiness of this idyllic village nestled into the dramatic UNESCO-listed landscape. Known for its millennia of history as well as its beauty, this is a wonderful place to take to the water and absorb the incredible scenery.

A drive through the incredible Salzkammergut region will take in all the highlights of this stunning lake district. Take in the glassy waters of Traunsee, the second-largest lake in Austria, and explore pretty Gmunden, known for its ceramics. Next is Mondsee, an unspoilt expanse of water and also one of the filming locations in The Sound of Music. Finally, wander around the lovely, traffic-free village of St. Gilgen, which was once home to Wolfgang Mozart’s mother and sister.

Team Comments:

“When visiting Bad Ischl make sure you visit the famous Café Zauner, which has been serving coffee and cakes since 1832. The village of Hallstatt is my favourite place to visit in Austria. On a clear and sunny day this is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. If you can climb 200 steps, visit the Bone House in the grounds of the Church where you can see a collection of painted skulls.”

Don't feel like flying?

This tour is also available by coach rather than by air.

Lake Wolfgang Boat Trip

Take to the waters of Wolfgang See for the most picturesque and relaxing way to discover the three villages on the shores of this beautiful lake. Chic, elegant St. Gilgen and historic Strobl are pleasant villages in which to take a stroll or enjoy a coffee, whilst enjoying the incredible scenery of Lake Wolfgang.

A Beginner’s Guide to the Salzkammergut Lake District

The Salzkammergut, also known as Austria’s Lake District, is a region located in the northeastern part of the country, known for its picturesque lakes, mountains, and charming towns. It stretches over two Austrian federal states, Upper Austria, Styria, and Salzburg. As a local from Salzburg, I view the Salzkammergut as the region spanning approximately 100 kilometers between Hallstatt and Salzburg, although this is a broad definition.

I recommend the Salzkammergut as the best day trip destination from Salzburg (besides Berchtesgaden in Bavaria). The region’s natural beauty and various activities make it a perfect getaway for those looking to escape the city and experience authentic Austria.

In this article, I will give you an in-depth overview of the lakes, places, and activities in the Salzkammergut and then tell you how I would spend three days in the Salzkammergut if you are visiting for the first time.

The Meaning of Salzkammergut

Why is the area called Salzkammergut? The history of the Salzkammergut region is tied to the history of salt mining in the area. Salt has been mined in the Salzkammergut region for centuries, and the mines played an important role in the economy and politics of the area. Why is the area called Salzkammergut?

During the Habsburg Empire, the Salzkammergut was controlled by the state, which had a monopoly on salt production. The area was considered the “Salt Chamber” (Salzkammer) of the empire. The mines were a source of revenue for the empire. The mines were guarded, but the Salzkammergut region generally became isolated from the rest of the empire, with controls in place to prevent salt smuggling out of the area. This isolation impacted the region’s economic and social development, as the locals depended on the mines for their livelihood.

In the 19th century, the salt mines in Salzkammergut were closed down, and the region experienced economic decline. However, in the 20th century, the Salzkammergut region began to develop as a tourist destination, with visitors coming to see the landscapes and take tours of the closed salt mines.

The 8 Best Lakes in the Salzkammergut

There are 76 lakes in the Salzkammergut, each with unique charm and character. We will now look at the most popular lakes in the region, including Wolfgangsee, Attersee, Mondsee, Fuschlsee, Hallstätter See, Traunsee, Gosauseen, and Altausseer See.

Let’s look at the lakes in an order in which you could do a circular route by car . The first lakes (1-3) are the most popular; lakes 4 and 5 are optional, and lakes 6, 7, and 8 would either complete the circle or be an alternative route.

If you are traveling by public transport , you can take one of the two routes. On a day trip, recommend the first route to Hallstatt. If you are staying in the Lake District overnight, possibly with a glimpse of Traunsee and Gmunden as outlined in the 3-day itinerary below.

1. Fuschlsee: Least Touristy

Let’s kick things off with a visit to the first stop, Lake Fuschlsee. There is little to see at Fuschlsee. You can admire the Red Bull HQ from the outside, and Schloss Fuschl, one of the best wellness hotels near Salzburg , comes with a hefty price tag, but don’t let that fool you.

Gerhard Reus at Fuschlsee in the Salzkammergut

Fuschlsee has its authentic charm and surprises. Take a leisurely 3-hour walk around the lake, swim in its crystal clear waters, hike Mount Elmaustein, or try your hand at water sports like sailing, stand-up paddling, windsurfing, and even scuba diving! Compared to other lakes in the Salzkammergut, Fuschlsee is the best spot for swimming, and it’s just a quick half-hour bus ride from Salzburg on bus 150. Most other lakes are private, and swimming areas charge an entrance fee, or swimming is not allowed altogether. At Fuschlsee, you will find plenty of free and not overly crowded swimming spots.

Fuschlsee is perfect for those seeking relaxation, while thrill-seekers will also love trying out all the different water sports available. It’s the perfect first stop on our Salzkammergut adventure.

2. Wolfgangsee Lake: Must-Visit

Continue only 15 more minutes by bus 150 from Fuschl to reach Lake Wolfgangsee. Wolfgangsee might be my all-time favorite lake in the Lake District because that’s where you find my all-time favorite activities in the Salzkammergut. While Fuschlsee is lovely to swim and hike around the lake, Sankt Gilgen, the first town you reach at Wolfgangsee, is where the actual Salzkammergut, with its cultural heritage and unique features, begins.

Wolfgangseeschifffahrt in St Wolfgang

If you are up for an off-the-beaten-path adventure and have too much time, consider hiking from Fuschl to Sankt Gilgen . It’s not a spectacular hike but a relaxing, authentic, and off-the-beaten-path.

Wolfgangsee Lake is a stunning beauty in the Salzkammergut Lake District. It’s surrounded by mountains, like Schafbergmountain and the Zwölferhorn, lush green forests, and small villages like Sankt Gilgen and Sankt Wolfgang. The border between the state of Salzburg and the state of Upper Austria runs through Wolfgangsee, with Sankt Gilgen still in Salzburg and Sankt Wolfgang already in Upper Austria.

You can take a boat tour across or around the lake, hike one of the surrounding peaks, and enjoy breathtaking views across Wolfgangsee. If hiking is not your cup of tea, take the Cable Car to the top of Zwölferhorn or the cog railway to Schafberg mountain. If you are in for a leisurely walk with a short steep climb to the Falkenstein, you could walk along the shore from Sankt Gilgen to Sankt Wolfgang. There are plenty of beaches along the shoreline where you can stop for a picnic or relax in the sun.

3. Hallstätter See: Most Popular

Hallstättersee is a sight to behold, surrounded by towering mountains and rolling hills. Upon first sight, you might believe you are in Norway.

Where is Hallstatt

However, if you’re looking for a peaceful escape, there might be a better place for you than Hallstatt itself. Hallstatt on Hallstättersee is the most touristy place in Austria, famous for the over-tourism debate surrounding it, but the Lake Hallstatt area offers plenty off-the-beaten-path activities for nature lovers.

You might choose to hike Kalvarienberg mountain or embark on a 22-kilometer walk or a bike ride around the lake. You can also shorten that walk by only walking halfway around the lake to take a boat back to Hallstatt from Obertraun, Steeg, or the Hallstatt train station.

If you’re pondering a visit to Hallstatt, my recommendation is “yes”! There are other similar towns in the Salzkammergut. Hallstatt shines just a little brighter. It’s charming in its own special way. But, if you’re not the type to prioritize bucket list destinations, a trip to Wolfgangsee and a scenic boat ride from Sankt Gilgen to Sankt Wolfgang will give you just as good a taste of the beauty of the Lake District.

4. Gosauseen: Sidetrip from Hallstatt

Gosauseen is plural. The Gosau Lakes are three glacial lakes near Hallstatt. They might be the most beautiful lakes in the Salzkammergut area and some of the most beautiful in Austria. However, they are not on the way to Hallstatt. They are close to Hallstatt, and if you travel to Hallstatt by car and return to Salzburg via the alternative route through the Lammertal, as outlined in this article , a stop at the Gosauseen is a great idea.

To reach Gosauseen lake, you can drive or take bus 542 from Bad Ischl station (may require a transfer in Hallstatt). There is plenty of car parking where the walking path begins. For a more relaxed experience, stay overnight or drive to the lake. Take a 1-hour walk around the lake for scenic views of glaciers, clear water, peaks, and rock climbers. Hiking trails of various lengths and huts for food and drinks are available. The lake area is peaceful and ideal for nature lovers. September is a great time to hike both, the Vorderer Gosausee and Hinterer Gosausee lakes, for clear mountain reflections.

5. Altausseer See: Another Sidetrip from Hallstatt

From Hallstatt, you can also take a side trip to Altausseer See. Long, winding roads take you into the backcountry behind Hallstatt, where only a few tourists ever go. The breathtakingly beautiful lake stretches across an area of around 2m² and has a shoreline of 7 km, offering plenty to explore.

Altausee Lake Side Houses and Pier

The Altausseer See is known for its crystal-clear waters, idyllic landscape, and tranquil atmosphere. Besides the Gosauseen mentioned above lakes, the road to Altausee is a one-way street. On the way from Hallstatt, you first pass Bad Aussee before you reach Altausee.

Altausee has the oldest salt mine in Austria, posing an alternative to the more touristy salt mine in Hallstatt. Otherwise, there is not much to do at Altauseer See except for taking in the tranquility and natural beauty or visiting the local spa, but if you have plenty of time to explore the Salzkammergut Lake District and are looking for a truly off-the-beaten-path experience, Altauseer See would fit your bucket list perfectly. I recommend Altausee only as a side trip from Hallstatt and only if you travel by car.

6. Traunsee: Scenic Detour

Traunsee is 50 kilometers north of Hallstättersee, with Bad Ischl being halfway between Hallstättersee and Traunsee. Coming from Salzburg, Bad Ischl is where you have to decide whether to head south to Hallstättersee or north to Traunsee. If I had to choose, I would always go for Hallstättersee. It’s simply more spectacular than Traunsee.

Traunsee Gmunden Lake Side

But I would still recommend visiting both if you have the time and are staying in the Salzkammergut overnight or have a car. On your way back to Salzburg, or if you’re moving on to Vienna, take a detour and visit Traunsee. Traunsee is the largest lake in Austria by volume and the second deepest after Lake Constanz.

As you make your way along Traunsee, you’ll first come across Ebensee and then Traunkirchen. But the real gem of this lake is Gmunden, located on the north end. If you’re visiting Traunsee, Gmunden is a must-visit. The scenery is breathtaking, and the vibe is charming.

7. Attersee: Largest Lake in Austria

Next on our list of lakes in the Salzkammergut is Lake Attersee. While Traunsee is the deepest lake in Austria and the largest by volume, Attersee is the largest by surface size. Situated between Mondsee and Traunsee, Attersee offers itself to continue your detour back to Salzburg or those looking for a relaxed lake getaway. With a 42 km shoreline and an impressive depth of up to 150m, it’s the perfect place for swimming, boating, fishing, and other water activities.

Attersee Boat Ride with Kids

However, Lake Attersee lacks unique things to do, especially considering its size. Attersee is a popular destination for families. While it may not have many unique attractions compared to other things to do in the Salzkammergut, it offers opportunities for a peaceful and scenic vacation or to just drive along its lengthy shoreline.

8. Mondsee: Popular for the Sound of Music

Lake Mondsee is located next to Attersee and only 25 kilometers from Salzburg. When you venture into the Salzkammergut and don’t take the route via Fuschlsee, you end up at Mondsee. If you have a car and return via the route along Attersee, naturally, you will reach Mondsee next.

I recommend something other than Mondsee as a primary destination. As a primary destination, I recommend Wolfgangsee and/or venture further into the so-called “inner Salzkammergut” via Bad Ischl, but as a side trip and/or a detour, or if you love the Sound of Music, Mondsee is well worth visiting.

If you plan to move on to Attersee, you will pass by Mondsee. If you are traveling to Wolfgangsee by car, consider taking a detour to Mondsee because Sankt Gilgen, the first place you reach on Lake Wolfgangsee, is only 10 minutes from Mondsee by car. Mondsee is also included in every Sound of Music bus tour, and bus 140 will take you there in 45 minutes.

Towns in the Salzkammergut

Hundreds of cute little villages can be found in the Salzkammergut, but here are my top 9 picks. Most of the towns are at the lake. That’s why some of the names might sound familiar to you. Some of the towns’ names are similar or even the same as the name of the lake they are at.

1. Fuschl am See

Fuschl am See is a small town on lake Fuschlsee in the Salzkammergut and a wonderful setting for a visit to this region of Austria. The lake is supervised by a Renaissance castle and offers a ten-kilometer circuit. From Fuschl, you have a magnificent view of the turquoise waters and the Schober, one of the most picturesque mountains in the region. In Fuschl am See, you can find stores and services and stay in one of the many hotels or guesthouses, but there is nothing to see in Fuschl itself. Fuschl, however, is a great starting point for a walk around the lake or to look for a swimming spot.

Fuschl am See

In addition, you can do some water sports activities. Another plus is that you can see the famous Red Bull headquarters, located near the lake on the side of the road, before you reach Fuschl, but only from the outside. All in all, Fuschl am See is an excellent starting point to discover the beauties of the Salzkammergut. I wouldn’t recommend it if you only explore one place in the lake district, but I recommend it if you like hiking and swimming, have enough time to spend in Salzburg and its surroundings, and would like to see the less touristy side of the Lake District.

2. Sankt Gilgen

For many reasons, Sankt Gilgen is an amazing destination to start your exploration of the Salzkammergut region. The primary reason is that Sankt Gilgen is the entry point to the Salzkammergut because you can take bus 150 to Sankt Gilgen and take a boat across the lake to the more interesting town of Sankt Wolfgang. But Sankt Gilgen is also worth seeing.

Its Baroque core, international boarding school, lakeside promenade, and proximity to the famous town of St. Wolfgang make it a great place to explore. Plus, the ferry between Sankt Gilgen and Sankt Wolfgang provides travelers an exciting way to explore the area.

St Gilgen in the Lake District in Salzburg

For an exciting activity in Sankt Gilgen itself, visitors can take the cable car to Zwölferhorn mountain and enjoy incredible views of the region. The Wolfgangsee Lake, greenish in color, is an unforgettable sight. For thrill-seekers, there is the opportunity to go paragliding from Zwölferhorn. The small downtown of St. Gilgen also offers a variety of shops, patisseries, restaurants, and cafes.

The birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s mother, Anna Maria Pertl, is also located here. Visitors can admire the frescoed wall and the statue and fountain of the famous composer’s mother. Finally, the Zwölferhorn mountain is perfect for skiing and snowshoeing in the winter and hiking in the summer months. With the cable car running all year round, St. Gilgen is a great place for any traveler to visit.

If you want to know more about the things to do in Sankt Gilgen, be sure to read this article .

3. Sankt Wolfgang

St Wolfgang is a stunning town in the Salzkammergut region, Austria, offering a variety of stores, hotels, restaurants, cafes, and a cog railway ride, one of the best things to do in the Salzkammergut. In winter, Sankt Wolfgang hosts a Christmas Market that is regarded as one of the best Christmas Markets in Austria and one of the most popular Christmas Markets around Salzburg .

Watch this video to get an idea of the Christmas Market in Sankt Wolfgang:

Christmas Market at St Wolfgang im Salzkammergut

The picturesque cobblestone streets are lined with frescoes that give the town a special charm. One of the most famous buildings in St Wolfgang is the pilgrimage church, which houses the famous Pacher Altar. That’s the one must-see sight in Sankt Wolfgang.

For even more spectacular panoramic views over Lake Wolfgang, Lake Mondsee, and Lake Attersee, you can take the Schafbergbahn , considered the steepest rack railroad in Austria and has been in operation since 1893. Please read my article on Sankt Wolfgang to better understand the best things to do in Sankt Wolfgang .

The Austrian Lake District - Sankt Wolfgang Seeufer

As mentioned about Sankt Gilgen, you can take a boat between Sankt Wolfgang, Sankt Gilgen, and Strobl. The ship is, in fact, the best way to reach Sankt Wolfgang from Salzburg if you travel by public transport. It would be less expensive to change from bus 150 to bus 546 in Strobl, but it’s more convenient and much more fun to ride the 150 bus from Salzburg to Sankt Gilgen and take the boat across the lake to Sankt Wolfgang.

There is so much to do and see that St Wolfgang is a perfect place to spend a day or longer. If you are not planning to go to Hallstatt and are looking for the second-best place to visit in the Lake District, Sankt Wolfgang would be my recommendation.

4. Bad Ischl

Bad Ischl is a great town to visit for many reasons. Bad Ischl, for many reasons, is different from all the other places in the Lake District. The town is not located at a lake but is renowned as a cultural center and a spa town because the Habsburg Emperor chose Bad Ischl as his summer vacation destination in the 19th century. In Bad Ischl, you find impressive imperial architecture similar to the architecture in Vienna.

Trinkhalle Sight in Bad Ischl

Bad Ischl is also home to a great deal of activity all year round. During the summer months, visitors can enjoy the open-air operettas. In the winter, the Christmas markets around the town create a festive atmosphere. For the more sportive, there are plenty of activities such as hiking, running, and biking.

The town is also home to the famous Zauner pastry, whose exquisite treats have been enjoyed by royals, such as Emperor Franz Josef I and Empress Sissi. Another top attraction is the Kaiservilla, a majestic wedding gift from the Emperor’s mother, situated in the spa town. If you want to learn about all the activities available in Bad Ischl, read my article on things to do in Bad Ischl .

Bad Ischl is also conveniently located between all the major places in the lake district. Bus 150 takes you from Salzburg to the lake district, with its final destination in Bad Ischl. Bad Ischl has a train station serving destinations like Hallstatt and places further north like Gmunden, so Bad Ischl is the central transportation hub of the Salzkammergut.

Therefore, Bad Ischl is a great base to explore the area. Because Bad Ischl is a bigger town than most of the others, it also has less expensive accommodation options and even a hostel.

5. Hallstatt

Hallstatt is one of the most photographed villages in the world and one of the most touristy towns in Austria, and that’s for a reason. This quaint mountain-side village is nestled between the stunning Hallstatt Lake and the majestic Dachstein Mountains, making it a lovely place to visit. Not only is Hallstatt picturesque, but it also has a long and rich history dating back to the Neolithic era. Evidence of the stilt houses of the Mondsee group culture has been found in the area, as well as proof of the Hallstatt culture, which was centered around the mining town of the same name.

Wooden Houses in Hallstatt in the Salzkammergut

The history of the area continued to evolve through the Roman and Germanic eras when salt was mined in the area being used for trading and culinary purposes. The area then came under the rule of the Austrian Babenbergs and the Habsburgs, leading to the transformation of the area into the Kammergut, the financial salt chamber of Vienna.

Today, Hallstatt is a car-free village, offering visitors a chance to explore the area in a unique way. One quirky sight is the “bone house” in St. Michaels Chapel, which is a testament to the lack of space in the area. Graves were recycled with skulls painted with ivy and oak leaves, and those of women were adorned with floral designs. Hallstatt has become increasingly popular with tourists, with about a million visitors a year. Its popularity is only set to grow! If Hallstatt is on your bucket list, go for it!

6. Bad Aussee

Bad Aussee, located in the heart of Austria’s Styrian region, is a hidden gem in the Salzkammergut region. While the famous town of Hallstatt often overshadows it, Bad Aussee is worth a visit for those seeking a more off-the-beaten-path experience. Bad Aussee is said to be the very center of Austria itself. A monument in the town center symbolizes that.

Altausee

But even if Bad Aussee is regarded as the center of Austria, you would not visit it by accident. You would have to venture from Hallstatt further into Styria to get to Bad Aussee by chance. If you, for example, travel from Hallstatt to Graz, you would pass Bad Aussee, but you wouldn’t pass it otherwise. You would have to decide to visit Bad Aussee as a detour from Hallstatt.

The town, like many others, was built around salt mining, and you can still visit a salt mine there. Additionally, the word “Bad” in Bad Aussee is known as a spa and wellness town, and its beautiful spa is another reason to visit.

Furthermore, the Bad Aussee has some beautiful sights, such as the 15th-century Kammerhof and two churches from the 14th and 15th centuries. If you visit Bad Aussee and maybe even stay there overnight, make sure to see Altausee, which is even further off-the-beaten-path and only 10 minutes by car from Bad Aussee. It’s enough to stay in Altausee for half an hour to walk through the village and along the lake. You may have time to visit Grundlsee, which is also only 15 minutes away.

Located on the north shore of Lake Traunsee, the deepest lake in the region, the town has long been a favored destination of the Habsburg monarchy and still retains the majestic architecture of its past. It was less popular with them than Bad Ischl, but the imperial vibe is similar.

If you had to choose between Bad Ischl and Gmunden, I would 100% go for Bad Ischl, but if you have time and are looking for another place to visit in the Salzkammergut, Gmunden is well worth visiting. Gmunden is also a must-stop if you travel by car and take a detour along Traunsee on your way back to Salzburg or on your way from or to Vienna. Visitors of Gmunden can enjoy the lakeside promenade and browse the stalls of souvenir vendors or take in historical sites such as the Town Hall or Parish Church, which dates back to 1301.

Hyunok Jang at Schloss Ort in Gmunden Austria

Gmunden is also renowned for its pottery, with the Gmundner Keramik brand symbolizing Austrian table culture. Those interested in the region’s ceramics heritage can visit the Gmunden Ceramic shop, take a factory tour, or admire the ceramic fountain on Rinnholz Square. Schloss Ort, a 15th Century castle built on a tiny island, is a must-visit attraction and can be reached by walking across a 123-meter wooden bridge. Water sports, such as windsurfing and water skiing, are popular on Lake Traun, and the outdoor lido pool is suitable for all ages. Boats also sail around the lake and to Ebensee, where visitors can take a cable car to Feuerkogel year-round.

Mondsee, the town of the same name as the lake, is on many travelers’ itineraries because of the famous wedding church from the Sound of Music. The town is only 25 kilometers from Salzburg. I have fond memories of spending time in Mondsee during my teens, as my best friend moved there. However, I’ll be honest; it’s not my favorite lake in the Salzkammergut. Note that that’s just a personal preference. It doesn’t mean you won’t like it! The church in Mondsee is indeed stunning, and there are opportunities for biking, hiking, and water sports, like at many of the lakes in the Salzkammergut.

Lake Mondsee is one of the largest and warmest lakes in the region, making it popular for a range of water sports, including sailing, windsurfing, and more. The town features a market square, a scenic promenade, and a medieval monastery. Furthermore, the stunning yellow church, St. Michael, dating back to the 16th century, is featured in the wedding scenes of “The Sound of Music,” and entrance is free.

Mondsee Church

At Mondsee, visitors can enjoy a range of activities, such as spending the afternoon at the beach (Alpenseebad) with a diving tower and several slides or taking a walk along the Seepromenade with places to sit and relax. There are also plenty of restaurants and cafes in Mondsee town, where travelers can sample traditional Austrian dishes and delicacies such as Apfelstrudel. With so much to do and see, Mondsee is the ideal location for a holiday in the Salzkammergut region of Austria.

The 8 Best Things to Do in the Salzkammergut

The things to do in the Salzkammergut Lake District I present to you are just a small selection of my favorite things and the most popular things to do in the Salzkammergut.

1. Kaiservilla Bad Ischl

As mentioned above, Bad Ischl in the Salzkammergut is different from other places in the Lake District. While most places in the Salzkammergut are simple, Bad Ischl is not. Why is that? Because Bad Ischl was where Emperor Franz Joseph spent his summer. The Kaiservilla in Bad Ischl was the summer residence of the imperial family. During a 45-minute guided tour of the Villa, you’ll see the preserved chambers where Empress Elisabeth and Emperor Franz Joseph lived and made history.

The Bad Ischl Kaiservilla Tourist Spot

The Villa is surrounded by the spacious Kaiserpark, perfect for a leisurely stroll, and home to the former tea house of Empress Elisabeth, the Marmorschlössl. You can roam freely in the park, but the Villa is only accessible on the guided tour. Unfortunately, taking pictures is prohibited inside the building.

But I would anyway recommend the tour. It’s fascinating to learn about the imperial family’s life and the events that took place here. It was initially a neoclassical building with classical columns, timpani, and an English-style park. In 1854, it was a wedding gift from Archduchess Sophie to her son, Emperor Franz Joseph, on the occasion of his marriage to Elisabeth, better known as Sissi. The Villa was not only a summer residence but also a stage for diplomatic maneuverings. On July 28, 1914, Emperor Franz Joseph signed the declaration of war against Serbia in his study at the Villa, which marked the start of WWI.

2. Take pictures of Hallstatt

Hallstatt is one of the most touristy places in Austria and one of the most photographed villages in the world, but let’s be real! Most people come here to take photos, and that’s okay! Trust me, I’ve been a tour guide in the area for years, and I’ve seen the magic it brings to people’s eyes.

Photo Opportunities in Hallstatt

To get the best shots, go early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid crowds. Take a walk around the village and find unique angles, like the charming narrow alleys, the colorful houses, or the stunning view from the hilltop. And remember to capture the essence of Hallstatt, the beautiful lake that reflects the town. It’s all about finding the perfect light and framing. I’m always here to help, so if you need any tips, ask. Let’s capture the beauty of Hallstatt together!

But Hallstatt is about more than just taking pictures. The best things to do in Hallstatt include a visit to Dachstein Krippenstein by cable car, a visit to the oldest salt mine in the world, and a myriad of hikes.

3. Visit Dachstein Krippenstein

Dachstein Krippenstein is a natural gem and one of the best things to do in the Salzkammergut. Three cable cars take you up the mountain. This alpine wonderland is full of breathtaking scenery and exciting activities, making it a must-visit for anyone visiting the area. At least if you have enough time. I recommend Dachstein Krippenstein if you can spend a whole day on this Salzkammergut activity. Whether you’re a hiker or just looking for a fun day trip, there’s something for everyone.

Third Dachstein Cable Car

To find out how exactly to visit Dachstein Krippenstein, have a look at my in-depth guide or watch the YouTube Video of my latest visit .

Visiting the ice cave after the first cable car is a highlight. This natural formation is an ice cave year-round, making it a unique experience. Don’t miss the opportunity also to visit the Mammut Cave. After the second cable car, you reach the Five Fingers, one more must-see attraction, on foot in 15 minutes. Getting to Dachstein Krippenstein is easy, whether coming from Hallstatt or the nearby town of Obertraun. You can take the bus, drive to the cable car station, or even stay overnight in Obertraun, from where you could even reach the cable car station on foot.

4. Schafbergbahn

One of my favorite things to do in the Salzkammergut is take the Schafbergbahn Cog Railway up to Mount Schafberg. This railway is not just any means of transportation; it’s a true work of art. The red and white cars zigzag up the mountain, and the journey is a piece of Austria’s rail history. The Schafbergbahn was built in 1892 and is still powered by steam. The price of the trip is high, but it’s worth it for the unique experience. Here is my detailed guide on the Schafbergbahn cog railway .

Gerhard Reus in the Schafbergbahn St Wolfgang

The Schafbergbahn only operates in the warmer months from April to November, with schedules subject to weather conditions. Check the Salzburg AG website to inform yourself about the current timetable! If you’re in the area around Christmas, check the schedule for their Advent rides and visit St Wolfgang’s, Christmas Market. A combined ticket for the boat on Lake Wolfgangsee and the Schafbergbahn is also available, making it convenient for those arriving by public transport from Salzburg.

5. The Sound of Music Wedding Church

One of the most popular things to do in the Salzkammergut is to visit the Basilica Church in Mondsee. I mentioned before that Mondsee is not my favorite place in the Lake District, but there is a reason the church is popular among tourists. When visiting the Sound of Music Wedding Church in Mondsee, you’re immediately reminded of a famous wedding scene from the Sound of Music movie.

Altar at the Basilica Church in Mondsee in the Lake District

Whether you are already an expert on the movie or want to learn about the timeless classic, here are 25 facts about the Sound of Music and a quiz to test your knowledge.

Mondsee and the church are only 25 kilometers from Salzburg and can be accessed by car or bus 140, but the Sound of Music bus tour also takes you there. The beautiful 15th-century building is the second-largest church in Upper Austria, with two towers extending 52 meters high. In 2005 Pope John Paul II upgraded this church to a basilica status after restoration.

Visiting Basilika St Michael can be fascinating as you are met with both beautiful and macabre sights. There are relics within, such as skeletons, tabernacles, and much more to explore.

6. Hike around Lake Gosausee

I recommend a walk around Gosauseen and the Cable Car at Gosauseen if you travel by car or stay in the Salzkammergut overnight. If you drive there, there’s plenty of parking for cars. To get to Gosauseen by public transport, all you have to do is hop on the 542 at the Bad Ischl station (maybe a change in Hallstatt), and in an hour, you’ll find yourself lakeside. You could make Hallstatt and Gosauseen on a day trip from Salzburg, but it’s not recommended since you would be in a hurry.

Once you’re at the lake, strap on your walking shoes and get ready for an hour-long circumnavigation of the lake. Trust me; the scenery is out of this world – glaciers, clear water, jagged peaks, and more. And you’ll also have the chance to watch rock climbers in action.

The first lake is called the Vorderer Gosausee, but halfway through your walk, you can take a trail to the Hinterer Gosausee, where there’s a great hut called Holzmeister Alm. The area is a hiker’s paradise with trails of all lengths and plenty of huts for food and drinks. And it’s one of the most peaceful places I know, perfect for those who want to enjoy the great outdoors. If you’re here on a clear day in September, take the chance to hike both the Vorderer and the Hinterer. The trails are easy and well-marked, with clear lakes for a stunning mountain reflection.

7. Outdoor Activities

As you can imagine, the lake district has countless outdoor activities. Too many to list all the great ones here but let me give you a few ideas. Let’s start with hiking, shall we? The Salzkammergut is a hiker’s paradise with so many popular trails to choose from. The best time is during the spring and summer, but autumn, while the weather is less stable, is the most gorgeous time of the year. My top picks are the Schafberg and Zwölferhorn mountains for a long but manageable hike and the Klettersteig (via ferrata) in Mondsee for thrill-seekers. The latter would be too scary for me.

Hiking on Dachstein Krippenstein

Now let’s talk about water sports. The lake at Fuschl is the perfect spot for swimming, water sports, and even just a relaxing walk around the lake. And for those who love biking, you might want to cycle around Lake Mondsee. The best time for water sports and biking is naturally during the warmer months, from spring to fall.

And when winter rolls around, we have some ski and snowboarding opportunities in many of the places in the Salzkammergut, like on Dachstein mountain, in Bad Ischl, and Ebensee. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, there are winter sports for everyone in the Salzkammergut.

Trust me; you won’t regret visiting Salzkammergut for any of these activities. Hope to see you out here soon!

8. Food & Drinks in the Salzkammergut

When it comes to traditional Austrian cuisine, the Salzkammergut region may not have any standout dishes or restaurants. Still, what it lacks in culinary variety, it more than makes up for with its sweet treats. That’s the case in most of Austria, thanks to Emperor Franz Joseph’s sweet tooth. Under his rule, only certain businesses were allowed to bake cakes and produce sweets for him, which resulted in some of the best dessert creations in the country. Since Bad Ischl in the Salzkammergut was one of his favorite places to be, the pastry shops and cafes there became the best in their craft. Many are still around today, producing some of the most delicious sweets you’ll ever taste.

Zaunerstollen at k und k Zauner in Bad Ischl

One must-visit spot is Zauner in Bad Ischl – it’s a true gem and serves up some of the best sweets you’ll ever taste. Zaunerstollen would be my recommendation. But don’t just take my word for it – try it yourself and see why so many locals and visitors rave about it.

How long to spend in Salzkammergut?

Most travelers visit the Salzkammergut on a day trip. That’s a great idea. It’s also a great idea to have a base in Salzburg and venture into the Salzkammergut several times. You could head to Bad Ischl and Hallstatt for a day without stopping at Wolfgangsee and come back for another day trip to take the boat across the lake from Sankt Gilgen to Sankt Wolfgang to take the Schafbergbahn cog railway or hike Mount Schafberg.

But there are many things to see and do in Austria. A single-day trip to the Salzkammergut will give you an idea of the area and is enough for most travelers. However, as you can guess from everything you have read, you wouldn’t get bored, even if you spend a week in the area. That’s especially true if you are into hiking.

In conclusion, a day trip is enough to get an idea of the Salzkammergut. If you want to stay longer, stay in the Salzkammergut overnight and explore more. Three days might be the ideal stay in the lake district. Take a look at the 3-day itinerary below if that’s what you are up to. First, let’s talk about moving around the Salzkammergut Lake District.

How do you get around the Salzkammergut?

The Salzkammergut region is well connected by buses. Trains are available but not on the main route when coming from Salzburg. When coming from Salzburg, you most likely take bus 150 in the direction of Bad Ischl. If you decide to go to Mondsee, you will take bus 140. 150 and 140 are the main bus lines in the Salzkammergut, with the 150 bus being more popular since that’s what takes people to Hallstatt.

How to take Bus 150 to Hallstatt

Bad Ischl has a train station. If you are heading to Hallstatt, you decide in Bad Ischl if you continue by train or bus. The bus is more convenient since it doesn’t require a boat ride, but the boat ride is the reason I prefer the train to go to Hallstatt. To plan your trip to Hallstatt, you can check out this article on how to go to Hallstatt by public transport .

If you are coming from Vienna, you get to Hallstatt or Bad Ischl by train from Attnang Puchheim since that’s on the main Austrian train route between Salzburg and Vienna. Getting from Salzburg to Bad Ischl via Attnang Puchheim would be possible but is not recommended since the bus from Salzburg is much more scenic. Therefore, it’s generally better to take a trip from Salzburg to the Lake District instead of from Vienna.

Getting to Hallstatt from Salzburg by bus and train takes around 3 hours since Hallstatt is on the other side of the Lake District when coming from Salzburg, but the ride is worth it due to the beautiful scenery along the way.

Fuschl, on the other hand, is only 30 minutes by bus 150 from Salzburg, and Mondsee is also only 45 minutes away, but the further you venture into the Salzkammergut, the more stunning the scenery gets. If Hallstatt is too far and Fuschl or Mondsee are not attractive enough, Wolfgangsee and the town of Sankt Wolfgang might be the perfect place to visit. To get to Sankt Wolfgang, you either take bus 150 to Sankt Gilgen and cross the lake by boat or take bus 150 to Strobl and change to bus 546 to Sankt Wolfgang.

Bad Ischl Train Station in the Salzkammergut

The town of Bad Ischl is a central hub. Bad Ischl is the last stop of bus 150. It also has a train station that not only serves trains to the Hallstatt train station (which is across the lake from the village because Hallstatt didn’t have enough space for a train station) but Bad Ischl is also connected by train to the Salzkammergut town of Gmunden in the north and to Attnang Puchheim. Attnang Puchheim, on the other hand, is on the most popular Austrian train route, the route between Salzburg and Vienna.

Other places in the Salzkammergut region, like Altaussee or Lake Gosau, may not be as easily accessible by public transport, but you can check the OBB website for train and bus schedules and plan accordingly.

Salzkammergut 3-Day Itinerary

Here is a 3-day Itinerary for the Salzkammergut. That’s how I would do it. Your preferences and, therefore, your plan may vary. For this Salzkammergut Itinerary, you would have to stay in the Salzkammergut for at least two nights. You can easily access the Salzkammergut from Salzburg by taking bus number 150. For this itinerary, we use public transport exclusively, but you can also follow the plan by car and have more flexibility for stops and activities.

Day 1: Salzburg – Sankt Wolfgang

  • Take bus 150 to arrive in the Salzkammergut, in Sankt Gilgen, and take the boat across Lake Wolfgangsee to Sankt Wolfgang. Make sure to get a combined ticket for the boat and the Schafbergbahn cog railway. The same company operates them. Enjoy the beautiful views of the lake and the surrounding mountains!
  • In Sankt Wolfgang, check into your accommodation and take a leisurely stroll along the lake promenade in St. Wolfgang. Admire the charming medieval architecture of the town! If you are visiting in December, there is one of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful Austrian Christmas market in Sankt Wolfgang. Read this article if you need more inspiration for things to do in Sankt Wolfgang!
  • Take the Schafbergbahn cog railway to the top of the Schafberg mountain, and enjoy the panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. The Schafbergbahn is one of the best things to do in the Salzkammergut Lake District. Here is a detailed review of the Schafbergbahn .
  • Return to your accommodation in St. Wolfgang for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Sankt Wolfgang – Hallstatt – Bad Ischl/Obertraun

  • Take bus 546 from St. Wolfgang to Bad Ischl as early as possible. In Bad Ischl, right away, take the bus or the train to Hallstatt to arrive in Hallstatt before the crowds.
  • In Hallstatt if you don’t visit any of the other salt mines around Salzburg , take a tour of the Hallstatt salt mines, the oldest salt mine in the world, and learn about the history of salt mining in the region.
  • Take a leisurely stroll around Hallstatt, admire the town’s well-preserved architecture, and take tons of pictures.
  • Take the public boat to the Hallstatt train station (located across the lake) or Obertraun (also situated across the lake). OPTION 1 : Return to Bad Ischl to stay there, explore Bad Ischl the same day, and visit the Kaiservilla, the Habsburg emperor’s Villa, the next day before moving on to Gmunden. This option is more relaxed and leaves more space to explore Bad Ischl and Gmunden on the third day. OPTION 2 : Stay in Obertraun. Obertraun is a great place to stay if you want to avoid paying Hallstatt prices but want to stay close to Hallstatt and visit Dachstein Krippenstein (which I recommend but takes the better part of a day) the next day.

Day 3: Bad Ischl/Obertraun – Gmunden – Salzburg

  • OPTION 1 : If you returned to Bad Ischl the day before, you have plenty of time to explore the town further and visit the Kaiservilla. The Kaiservilla and their guided tour of the interior of the Emperor’s residence is the most interesting historical thing to do in the Salzkammergut. OPTION 2 : Visit Dachstein Krippenstein by taking bus 543 from Obertraun. Take the first two cable cars and explore either the Mammut Cave or Ice Cave after the first cable car ride. Then, visit the five fingers viewpoint after the second cable car ride. Focus on these highlights to make the most of your trip, as many other activities are available. In the afternoon, head to Bad Ischl by taking bus 543 to Obertraun, followed by a train from Obertraun to Bad Ischl. Read this article if you want more information on the visit to Dachstein Krippenstein.
  • From Bad Ischl, take the train to Gmunden. Depending on the time you arrive there, you should take a leisurely stroll around Gmunden, visit Schloss Ort, admire the charming architecture of the town and have dinner.
  • Take the train from Gmunden to Salzburg with a change in Attnang Puchheim. The train ride takes between one and two hours. Time your return accordingly.

This itinerary is a mere suggestion and can be customized to suit your tastes and schedule. Bad Ischl offers rich history and culture, so a visit is highly recommended. To maximize your experience, consider extending your stay in Bad Ischl and taking day trips to further explore the stunning Salzkammergut region. Feel free to personalize the itinerary to fit your interests.

Is there an organized Salzkammergut Tour?

It’s easy to reach and explore the Salzkammergut on your own, but if you are short on time or just don’t want to think about how to get to the Salzkammergut, there are organized tours like the ones by Panorama tours. These tours enable you to visit Hallstatt in the afternoon, which is impossible by public transport but be aware that you would have much more time to spend in Hallstatt if you take a whole day and travel by public transport. Activities like visiting the salt mines are impossible if you take an organized tour.

The Sound of Music tour by Panorama tours also includes a panoramic view from Lake Wolfgangsee and a visit to Mondsee, where the wedding church from the Sound of Music is located. For a tour with nothing to do with the Sound of Music but more with the lake district, you would choose the Lakes and Mountains tour with a visit to Sankt Wolfgang. If you are not into the movie, I recommend that.

Salzkammergut Hotels – Where to stay in the Salzkammergut?

Bad Ischl is, for example, a great base and a central location to further explore the Lake District, but moving from place to place can be a great idea since you could wake up to a different lake view every day. Staying in the Lake District, especially close to Hallstatt, gives you a great advantage. The advantage of getting there or being there before everyone else. Hallstatt is most beautiful in the very early morning when not even the locals are awake.

Walk along the banks of the Ache and Ischl rivers to reach the imperial town of Bad Ischl. En route you’ll find the small and tranquil Nussensee lake, a beloved destination of Empress Elisabeth (known endearingly as Sisi) and Emperor Franz Josef I. Continue on a peaceful forest path which was built in Sisi’s memory before finally reaching Bad Ischl. A lovely spa town which was the preferred summer getaway of the upper echelons of the Austrian Empire. Spend the afternoon exploring this historical town. Why not visit the spectacular Kaiser Villa? The former residence of the Habsburgs in the 1800’s, Franz Josef once described it as 'heaven on Earth'.

Ascent/Descent : 200m/295m

Salzburg Day Trips: 10 Austrian Lakes Worth a Visit

We have an obsession.

An obsession with Austrian lakes. Especially those that surround Salzburg (also known as the Salzkammergut )

We moved to Salzburg about a year ago and a year ago is when our love for the Lake District began. Within 30 minutes , you can reach 6 Austrian lakes and within an hour & a half you can reach 3 MORE! And when I say lakes I mean clear turquoise water, mountains & farmland in every direction, birds chirping, a subtle breeze, the greenest grass imaginable and total peace.

The “Best of” Austrian Lakes Outside of Salzburg

1. mondsee –  most likely to exist in a fairytale and best electric boats, 2. mattsee –  best grassy beach area and most accessible lake activities, 3. attersee –  most beautiful lake and mountain scenery, 4. wolgangsee –  best looking water, 5. hintersee –  best place for a peaceful lake stroll, 6. fuschlsee –  best summer destination for the rich and famous, 7. wallersee –  most accessible by train, 8. hallstätter see –  most historic and scenic lake village, 9. traunsee –  most enchanting lake of austria, 10. zeller see –  most athletic lake destination.

Mondsee is the closest lake to Salzburg, and it’s also the most famous. The church in its town center is the church from The Sound of Music – where Captain Von Trapp and Maria got married ! Every Sound of Music tour in Salzburg goes here and it will forever be one of my favorite churches in Austria because of that.

But aside from its fame, Mondsee has a LOT more to admire. The main street doesn’t look like real! It’s something out of a fairytale. Simply too perfect for words. Whenever we visit, I feel like I’m walking through movie set. Every building is brighter and more colorful than the one before. Cafes with outdoor seating line the street. It’s unlike any place we’ve ever seen…

And after you’ve accepted how perfect the town is, the lake will impress you even more. Bright blue water, mountains everywhere. Jump in the refreshing Apline water from the diving board or giant slide. Or rent an electric boat  for 15 euros/hour, float around and enjoy the scenery (which is our favorite thing to do!)

The electric boats at Mondsee are our favorites out of ALL  the Austrian lakes. They have a cover, just in case you need a break from the strong Austrian sun. So instead of hopping off the boat because your skin’s on fire, you just put up the cover and enjoy  maximum boating time!

How to Get to Mondsee

Driving: 20 minutes Bus from Salzburg HBF: #Bus 140 towards Mondsee; STOP: Mondsee  (Travel Time: 47 minutes)

For timetables & specifics, click HERE .

*The Sound of Music Tours stop at Mondsee for a short time, if you’re just looking to get a glimpse!

Surviving Europe AWARD

Most Likely to Exist in a Fairytale and BEST Electric Boats

Mattsee is another special place we’ve discovered outside of Salzburg. Just like Mondsee (and all the other Austrian lakes really) , the water is perfectly blue and clear with mountains and farmland everywhere you turn (NBD) . But aside from the “standard” amazing qualities, the grassy beach area is what stands out for us. There are TONS of activities to pass the time..

A food bar with classic Austrian dishes &  drinks. Volleyball nets , slides , diving boards and great areas for picnicking (picnic tables included!) And you can also rent a boat by the hour, float around and completely lose track of time.

But don’t end your day with the lake – the town of Mattsee is absolutely adorable too! Many Austrians have lake homes in Mattsee, so  it’s a true vacation spot with all the conveniences and beauty you’d ever need to occupy your time.

How to Get to Mattsee

Driving:  30 minutes Bus from Salzburg Breitenfelderstraße:   Bus #120 towards Mattsee Ochsenharing; STOP:   Mattsee Ortsmitte  (Travel Time: 40 minutes)

Best Grassy Beach Area and Most Accessible Lake Activities

3. ATTERSEE

Attersee oh Attersee. We have a real love for Attersee.

First of all, it’s more of the locals’ spot ( or so we’ve been told ), Meaning it’s always tourist-free. And also because the surroundings cannot be matched . You feel like you’re swimming in a postcard.

Grab a float at the store, blow it up and spend your day lying out on the water, taking in the scenery. And as with every lake, the lake water is see-through and so clean you could drink it! Nothing feels more peaceful.

We always go to one specific spot at Attersee (Unterach am Attersee) where there’s a great snack bar (with schnitzel, bosnas, drinks and SO much more!) , free & convenient parking, no entrance fee, a climbing wall, tennis courts, and slides. And of course you can choose to rent a boat to explore the pristine waters on your own.

After your boat ride, lay your towel out and relax on the quiet grassy beach area right on the water with great trees for shade, enough space to spread out and be close enough to jump in the (COLD) refreshing water. Or lay out on the dock in awe of your surroundings!

Attersee is truly our ‘happy place’  here in Austria. We can set up and work for the day and it’s usually pretty quiet, even in the middle of the summer. It’s a place where we we can be in our own little world.

How to Get to Attersee

Driving:  30 minutes Bus from Salzburg Mirabellplatz:  Bus #140 to Mondsee Busterminal (Franz-Kreutzberger-Straße); Bus #596 to  Unterach/Attersee Ortsmitte; walk to Unterach am Attersee (Travel Time: 2.5 hours)

Most Beautiful Lake and Mountain Scenery

4. WOLFGANGSEE

Wolfgangsee covers 2 destinations in the Salzkammergut: Saint Wolfgang and Saint Gilgen. Both are MORE than worth a visit, and can be done together in a day.

Saint Wolfgang

Saint Wolfgang is definitely known for being a true destination in Austria, more than any of the other Austrian lakes. It becomes a major tourist attraction throughout the summer for Austrians and travelers alike. The buildings are your typical Austrian doll houses with flower boxes lining the balcony and murals painted on the outside.

The village is FILLED with tons of great apartments, hotels, restaurants and shops. It’s a true Austrian experience in every way, which is why we love it and why we’ve been back 3 times now ! It also has a vast history, dating back to the 900s.

Saint Gilgen

Saint Gilgen is also on Wolfgansee, so you’ve got the same picturesque scenery as Saint Wolfgang (just on a slightly smaller and less touristy scale). But despite the smaller size, it has everything you need (and MORE) for a relaxing getaway and true Austrian lake experience.

We actually prefer the mountain scenery in Saint Gilgen over Saint Wolfgang because of where it sits on the lake. You can see snow-capped mountains in the distance while you’re enjoying the warm Austrian summer weather – as late as July!

The restaurants located in the village are both historic and delicious (our favorite being the  Gasthof zur Post , which is in a building from the 1300s). And its streets are the perfect place to wander. With beautiful murals painting on it’s buildings, historic statues throughout and great shops too for your souvenir needs!

If you’re a Mozart fan, Saint Gilgen is also the home of Mozart’s grandfather, where his Mother was born AND where his sister lived. They’ve turned his mother’s birthplace into a museum , so you can learn more about Mozart and his family’s history.

How to Get to Saint Wolfgang & Saint Gilgen

Driving:  St. Wolfgang: 50 minutes; St. Gilgen: 30 minutes Bus from Salzburg HBF: Bus #150 to St Gilgen & St Wolfgang (Travel Time: St. Wolfgang – 1.5 hours St. Gilgen – 40 minutes)

*There is also a ferry  between St. Wolfgang – St. Gilgen

Best Looking Water

(the most turquoise water we’ve seen!)

5. HINTERSEE

Hintersee is a smaller and quieter lake near Salzburg, but it’s just as beautiful as all the other Austrian lakes. The biggest difference is the lakefront isn’t filled with shops or restaurants. Just beautiful big Austrian homes, walking trails, a BRIGHT blue/green lake and NATURE! If you’re looking to enjoy just that, Hintersee is perfect for you.

Come for a few hours to enjoy a leisurely hike around the lake or take a dip in the water. Set up a  picnic in perfect silence where the only noise you’ll hear are birds chirping. There is no better way to enhance your day in Austria! During the winter, Hintersee is a skiing destination, so again mountains, mountains, mountains galore!

How to Get to Hintersee

Driving:  30 minutes (navigate to Hintersee, 5324 Hintersee) Bus/Train: N/A

Best Place for a Peaceful Lake Stroll

6. FUSCHLSEE

Next up is Fuschlsee, home of the Red Bull HQ and also home to many Austrians’ fancy summer homes. Just like all the others, it has every component necessary for a relaxing vacation with seriously breathtaking scenery to match!

Fuschlsee  is just a few minutes from Saint Gilgen, so it’s a lake you can easily incorporate into a day exploring multiple Austrian lakes. In my opinion, Fuschlsee is one of the quieter, more low-key lakes in the Salzkammergut with more vacation homes than tourist attractions.  BUT  with the point of vacationing being to get away and enjoy peace of mind , this place is absolutely perfect. And when the sun sets directly over the water each night, you will feel nothing but that…

Another cool bonus of Fuschlsee (that none of the other Austrian lakes have) is the Red Bull HQ is located here. This HQ is by far one of the coolest corporate offices of ALL time. Be sure to stop on the road to take a few pictures of the bulls stampeding out from the front and the glass pods spread out on the colorful water.

And because of Red Bull, you’ll constantly see helicopters and private pontoon planes flying around (and landing on!) Fuschlsee throughout the day. Let’s be honest – who doesn’t love watching private helicopters take off, wondering what famous athlete or wealth CEO is the passenger? It keeps your day entertaining!

How to Get to Fuschlsee

Driving:  30 minutes Bus from Salzburg Hofwirt (Schallmooser Hauptstraße): Bus #150 towards Saint Gilgen Busbahnhof; get off at Fuschl am See Ortsmitte; (Travel Time: 35 minutes)

Best Summer Destination for the Rich and Famous

7. WALLERSEE

We can walk to Wallersee from our apartment, so we spend a lot of time here! There’s a great grassy area for laying out all day, an outdoor restaurant (with delicious pizza) , a club, a playground for the kids and it’s walking distance from the train station.

That being said, it’s definitely not the MOST picturesque lake of all the Austrian lakes – simply because the water isn’t as blue as the others and there aren’t as many mountain views. But on the plus side, it’s surrounded by green hills and farmland. And the trains to/from Salzburg pass by here, adding a certain European element to your lake experience!

Wallersee has all the same activities that exist at other Austrian lakes – electric boats (for 13 euros/hour), fishing, great areas for swimming – but it’s definitely more low key, since Wallersee is a ‘locals’ spot. No tourists can be found here, so peace and quiet are pretty much a guarantee.

All in all, it’s a beautiful place that we’re lucky to live close to, but it’s not our #1 favorite lake in the Salzkammergut region.

How to Get to Wallersee

Driving:  20 minutes Train from Salzburg HBF:  to Seekirchen Am Wallersee; WALK to Seestraße, Wallersee (Travel Time: 15 minutes)

Most Accessible by Train

8. HALLSTÄTTER SEE

If you’re up to date on all things Surviving Europe , you’ll know Hallstatt (and Hallstatt’s lake) is one of our favorite destinations in Europe ( let alone Austrian lakes! ) We dedicated an entire post  to visiting the village of Hallstatt (urging everyone to stay for more than just a day) . And Hallstatt’s lake is one of the main reasons why!

Renting an electric boat here is by far the most scenic experience of all time and only costs 18 euros/hour. When you’re floating around looking at a 7,000 year old ancient village in one direction and mountains & castles in the other, nothing compares.

To learn more about the magic that is Hallstatt, click here !

It’s also important to note that Hallstatt’s beauty is no secret. People come from all over the world to experience Hallstatt, so it’s also the most touristy lake out of these 10. That being said, you can easily plan your visit around the busiest times – come in the morning or after 6pm. Either way, a trip here is MORE than worth fighting the crowds.

How to Get to Hallstatt

Driving: 1 hour Train from Salzburg HBF : to Attnang-Puchheim; Attnang-Puchheim to Hallstatt to Hallstatt Ferry   (Travel Time: 2.5 hours)

Most Historic and Scenic Lake Village in EUROPE

9. TRAUNSEE

Traunsee is our most recent Salzkammergut discovery. We spent the entire day exploring each and every village around Traunsee, and that’s what made us fall in love with this lake destination. The most well-known attraction on Traunsee is the Schloss Ort  – a medieval castle built in the 11th century that sits directly on the lake. It’s located in the city of Gmunden, which is also a true destination in itself. You can rent an electric boat (for 17.50 euros/hour) in Gmunden and float around the castle to fully experience it’s beauty.

Aside from the castle,  Traunstein , the tallest mountain in the region sits on Traunsee, which makes for the most excellent views pretty much anywhere on the lake.

One of the coolest views of Traunstein (and boat rentals for 15 euros) can be found at Traunkirchen, which is a little, but incredibly picturesque Austrian village.

We discovered this village by driving around the lake and stopping when we saw something beautiful. And this village is MORE than beautiful. They have natural pools sitting right at the foot of the village, which is not something you’ll find just anywhere.

Another cool thing about Traunsee is that it’s mentioned in Austrian folklore! Legends tell tales of a lake monster known as Lungy and mermaids that live in the lake who would ride his back. I don’t know about you, but that was enough to convince us to make the trip.

How to Get to Traunsee

Driving: 1 hour Train from Salzburg HBF:  to Attnang-Puchheim to Altmünster/Traunsee (Travel Time: 2 hours)

Most Enchanting Lake of Austria

10. ZELLER SEE

*Pictures to come*

Zell Am See is another true Austrian holiday destination, and one we are planning to see ASAP! It’s the furthest from Salzburg – about an hour and a half – and is the perfect place for an active and relaxing holiday.

Skiing, hiking, swimming, water sports, golfing, mountain climbing.

It’s most famous for the year round skiing that takes place on the Kitzsteinhorn Glacie r. Spend the day on the slopes and then jump in the lake! A combination you never thought existed before now.

How to Get to Zeller See

Driving: 1.5 hours Bus from Salzburg Aiglhof S-Bahn (Unterführung): to Zell am See Bahnhof (Travel Time: 2 hours)

Most Athletic Lake Destination

The Best Way to Experience Austrian Lakes near Salzburg

By far the best way to enjoy the Salzkammergut is to rent a car and DRIVE !

You can easily pack multiple Austrian lakes into one day on the road, since they’re all located close to each other. Renting a car will allow you to make the most of your time and operate on your own schedule vs. relying on public transportation. Plus, driving in Austria is pretty straight forward, so there’s no need to worry about the roads.

And a huge BONUS = you’ll mostly be driving on back roads, which is the perfect way to truly experience ALL the beauty that exists in the Salzkammergut, a region that is known for being a vacation spot throughout Europe.

  • Katelyn K 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Meh Had high hopes for this tour but was slightly disappointed. The tour was a bit long and we felt as though we could’ve (and should’ve) visited all the sights ourselves to give us more time without the crowd of the others on the tour. Would have been worth the money if we got special access to the scenes, but all the sights have public access. While the singing and ambiance was fun and lighthearted, the hour break in Mondsee was a bit unnecessary. Wish we could’ve used that time to see more of scenes from the movie. I’m not a die hard sound of music fan, but it also would’ve been nice if the scenes being referenced were played on the screens for us as well. It was tough trying to picture the scenes our tour guide was describing when not having seen the film in a few months! If you aren’t a serious fan, might be worth it to watch the movie beforehand as a refresher! Read more Written June 3, 2024

Wonderful to visit the locations in the movie and get inside stories on the production. Perhaps could have done without the tour bus breaking out into group song, but I get it. Overall really enjoyable. Read more Written June 3, 2024

Knowing the movie as I have been an expat in Asia for a while, it was since a long time on my bucket list. I did love the Sound of Music tour very much, as it brought very many bachground informations about the movie and the stars. Driver and Tourguide have been outstanding - funny, kind, accurate and obviously loving their job. Highly recommend also for locals. Will do more tours now to get to know my hometown better. • Lois0408 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Brilliant afternoon out! Kylie was brilliant, she was great to listen to & had so many interesting & fun facts about the sound of music & Salzburg in general. We particularly loved the sing along parts! Our only disappointment was you don’t get to stop at a couple of iconic points of the movie, you only drive past Nonnburg Abbey & Frohnburg Palace so don’t really get to see them or get any good photos & there’s also no stop at any mountains or hills for the iconic twirling picture. However saying that, we really loved the tour and would recommend to other sound of music fans! Read more Written June 3, 2024
  • busymum001 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Highlight of my trip to Austria I left my husband to visit some Austrian Museums and booked myself onto this trip. I had read many of the reviews and had watched the movie again beforehand, so felt prepared, but it was even better than I had expected. I absolutely loved it and would recommend asking for the Australian female guide ( sorry, I’ve forgotten her name) who dressed the part and was both enthusiastic and knowledgeable throughout. She made the trip! Read more Written June 3, 2024

We had re-watched the movie on the train and visited one of the squares before the trip. It is a bit of a shame that you can’t actually drive past the residence or get into a number of the other places however, Simon, our cheerleader, was great and put a lot into making the trip interesting and fact filled. But let’s not talk about Mozart. Spoiler alert - It is amazing to understand that physically and geographically a song like do re mi can’t have been done in logical sequence once you know the lay-out of the city. Worth doing. 12 Best Lakes in Austria

Written by Diana Bocco Updated Oct 14, 2022

It's hard to beat Austria's lakes – sitting against the dramatic backdrop of the snowcapped Alps , with some of the cleanest, bluest waters you'll find in Europe. Austria brings out the charm when it comes to lakes and bodies of water, especially during the warm summer months. As the weather warms up, lakes become the go-to place for swimming, diving, and a number of sports.

In winter, many of Austria's lakes freeze over, transforming into wonderlands of ice and snow, perfect for ice-skating under the blue skies. The natural areas and mountains surrounding the lakes, popular with hikers during the summer, can still be enjoyed by snowshoers and cross-country skiers as the snow starts to fall.

Whether you're visiting a lake for sailing and canoeing, looking to lie down and sunbathe, or getting ready to hike the stunning mountainous surroundings, you'll find the perfect destination with our list of the best lakes in Austria.

1. Achensee

3. lake hallstatt, 5. zellersee, 6. attersee, 7. gosausee, 8. grüner see, 9. traunsee, 10. weissensee, 11. wolfgangsee, 12. faaker see, map of lakes in austria.

Achensee

Often referred to as "Tyrol's ocean" because of its massive size and "Fjord of the Alps" for its high water quality, Achensee is one of Austria's best lakes for swimming . Be ready, though - like many other Alpine lakes, the temperature of the water stays low, even on the hotter days, reaching only around 20 degrees Celsius.

The quality of the water is excellent, with visibility up to 10 meters deep, which attracts not only swimmers but also scuba divers. Plus, thermal winds over the lake make it an ideal environment for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

During the summer, it's also possible to rent boats or join a sailboat cruise. A number of modern steamer boats make their way around the lake, stopping at six major points along the way. There are even murder mystery dinner cruises available and Christkindl (Christmas market) boats during the holiday season.

The lake is surrounded by the Karwendel and Rofan mountains and offers many opportunities for hiking and biking. Nearby Bärenkopf mountain offers great trails up to the summit, from where you'll get panoramic views over the lake.

The clear waters of Mondsee

Mondsee is a lake near Salzburg that offers a wide variety of water-related things to do – including diving boards, giant slides, plenty of windsurfing, and the chance to canoe or rent your own electric boat to take on the waters.

At 11 kilometers long, Mondsee is a relatively large lake with calm blue waters. Luckily for swimmers, this is also one of the warmest lakes in the region, with water summer temperatures reaching a very balmy (by Austrian standards) 27 degrees Celsius.

The lake sits against the Drachenwand (Dragon Wall), an imposing limestone mountain partially covered in thick forest. Drachenwand attracts hikers and climbers, as well as BASE jumpers. Mondsee town on the shore is home to the little church where The Sound of Music's Captain Von Trapp and Maria got married - a very popular attraction in a colorful town that seems out of a fairy-tale.

Lake Hallstatt

Hallstatt is one of Austria's most visited lakes, in part because of the UNESCO World Heritage Site town on its shores , one of Austria's oldest villages. The picture-perfect cobblestone streets, 16th-century wooden houses, and other attractions in Hallstatt just add to the charm of the lake, no matter what time of the year you're visiting.

Hallstatt Lake's shimmering and calm waters, with a maximum depth of 125 meters, are perfect for swimming, scuba diving, and boating. Kayaking and canoeing are popular here, but visitors can also take ferry rides in ancient wooden boats or join a discovery cruise.

For those wanting to take a dip in the cool waters, the 21-kilometer-long Lake Hallstatt offers plenty of shoreline options. There's a family-friendly beach in Obertraun, a lakeside resort on Bad Goisern, and a bathing island and children's playground just a few hundred meters from the center of town.

Aerial view of Plansee in Tyrol

The second largest natural lake in Tyrol, near the border with Germany, Plansee covers 2.87 square kilometers with a depth of almost 80 meters. It's often referred to as "the fjord of Austria" because of its majestic blue and greenish beauty, with water and mountains and forests melting into each other as far as the eye can see.

The waters here are so clear, you can see almost 15 meters down, making it a perfect destination for swimmers and divers.

Sailing and surfing are also popular here in summer, and many visitors spend time hiking or cycling the shores on trails that vary from the easy one-hour-long Ruine Ehrenberg loop from Reutte to the five-hour-long mountainous Thaneller trail that departs from Berwang.

During the winter months, many of the trails (including the Thaneller trail) are also accessible for snowshoers. The lake freezes over regularly, becoming a popular ice-skating rink.

Fall colors along the shore of Zellersee

Despite its small size (only four kilometers long and 73 meters deep) and water temperatures staying around 18 degrees Celsius in summer, Zellersee is one of Austria's best lakes for swimming. Formed about 10,000 years ago towards the end of the last Ice Age, the lake is still fed by numerous mountain streams, keeping the water clear all summer long.

No combustion engines can be run on the lake, but visitors can rent small electric boats to explore and relax on the water. Windsurfing, kitesurfing, and sailing are popular, too. The 19th-century promenade that runs along parts of the lake offers plenty of shade in the heat plus panoramic views over the water.

The lake freezes over in winter, allowing for ice-skating and curling against the backdrop of the magnificent snow-covered Alps. You can also don a pair of snowshoes to follow the footpaths around the lake, deep into the mountains and forests covered in powdery snow.

Aerial view of Attersee

Just minutes outside Salzburg, Attersee is one of Austria's largest lakes at 20 kilometers long. Its massive size means the lake doesn't completely freeze during cold months, preventing winter sports from being played on the surface. From spring to fall, though, the area attracts lots of tourists, who come here for the excellent swimming in crystal blue waters.

Because the lake isn't completely surrounded by mountains (aside from the Schafberg mountain and the Höllengebirge karst range towards the south) there are steady winds hitting the lake. This makes Attersee ideal for sailing and kitesurfing . The locals are especially fond of the Rosenwind (wind of roses), which flows through the gardens of a nearby castle before hitting the lake, bringing the smell of roses along.

The shores of Attersee are filled with Mediterranean-style villas ; steep slopes perfect for some intense hiking; seaside resorts; and bathing areas with their own beach volleyball courts, sanitary facilities, and dog-friendly swimming.

Gosausee with the Dachstein glacier in the background

A set of three lakes sitting against jagged mountains and the Dachstein Glacier rising behind it, Gosausee makes for a perfect day trip from Salzburg . After all, there's nothing more magical than swimming in the heat of summer surrounded by snowcapped mountains.

The waters of the lake are so clear that you can even see the glacier in the distance from underwater. Be ready for very cold swimming, though - the temperature of the water here rarely goes over 19 degrees Celsius and can get as low as 17 degrees, even in summer.

Boat rentals, stand up paddleboarding, and diving are all available at the lakes, and the surrounding thick-forested area is popular with hikers and climbers. There's even a fixed-rope climbing route set up directly over the lake for stunning views over the Dachstein and the Gosau glacier.

Along the shorelines, you'll find rustic huts offering local specialties and home-style cooking.

Grüner See (Green Lake)

Grüner See (literally "Green Lake") is a deep emerald-green lake surrounded by the Hochschwab Mountains and thick bluish forests. As snow melts and runs down the mountain and into the lake in spring, the lake gets deeper and more vibrant. This is when divers arrive to see underwater bridges, trees, and even a bench.

In fact, this is why the lake has its distinctive color: as the waters rise, they swallow the surrounding area, rising over 12 meters, even over the park's resting benches. Since the waters are so clear, the grass and foliage underneath shine their bright green through.

In winter, as waters freeze and recede, the lake partially dries up, with the deepest areas reaching just one meter deep. Because of its small size and its fragile ecosystem, the lake is off-limits for sports activities. The action here is on the shores, as trails zigzag around for beautiful picture spots.

View of Traunsee and Schloss Ort

At 191 meters deep, Traunsee is Austria's deepest lake and a favorite diving spot. The lake is surrounded by majestic mountains, including the Traunstein, with its almost vertical walls that are perfect for climbing.

The shorelines are also home to vast flowering meadows and picturesque market towns and quaint villages like Altmünster and Traunkirchen and Ebensee. Several ferries cross the lake to connect the different towns around the shore.

The lake is a very popular place to visit, famous for its ideal wind conditions perfect for sailing and windsurfing . In May and June, major boat races are hosted here, and sailing courses are offered for beginners who want to dip their toes into the water. If you'd rather sit back and relax, you can rent a small electric boat or take a cruise here as well.

The lake is home to Schloss Ort, a medieval fortress built on its own little island. Accessible by a long bridge and surrounded by small manicured gardens, the fortress is Traunsee's favorite postcard image.

Come armed with a camera and an open mind when you visit. Legend says Traunsee is home to Lungy, Austria's version of the Loch Ness monster.

Weissensee

With over 2,000 hours of sunshine per year and crystal-clear, emerald waters, Weissensee is a favorite lake for swimming, diving, and cliff jumping. Even better, the water temperature here can reach 25 degrees Celsius in summer, much warmer than in other areas of Austria even in early fall.

The beauty of the lake is undeniable, surrounded by the stunning mountains of the Gailtal Alps and a beach area in the Stockenboi township. From here, you can rent equipment for all kinds of water sports, including windsurfing, canoeing, and water biking.

The lake's turquoise-blue water is so clean, you can safely drink it. The lake also attracts plenty of wildlife, including geese and herons. The Weissensee Nature Park surrounding the lake offers over 200 kilometers of marked paths for hiking, biking, and Nordic walking. There's even a chairlift to help you reach the higher trails if you're up for a more intense day out, and the park offers 12 marked routes specifically for runners.

Weissensee is just as popular in winter as it is in summer. Despite its relatively large size (the lake is almost 12 kilometers long and just under one kilometer wide), it freezes over frequently, transforming into a spectacular ice rink. Cross-country skiing and some Alpine skiing are available around the lake.

Wolfgangsee

Wolfgangsee is one of Austria's bluest lakes, a 13-kilometer-long body of water divided by the die Enge (the Narrow) peninsula about halfway. Here, the lake is just 200 meters wide, offering visitors a view of both shores and the breathtaking Salzkammergut mountain range.

You can reach the top of 1,783-meter-tall Schafberg mountain by catching a ride on the cogwheel Schafberg Railway - a slow ride up the mountainside with a total elevation gain of about 1,200 meters. The summit offers the best panoramic views over the lake and the mountains around, as well as access to a hotel and café.

A number of tucked-away resorts, such as St. Wolfgang and St. Gilgen , line up the coast, some of which have their own docks for those arriving by boat.

In addition to great kayaking and swimming, the lake is a prime destination for diving. The clear waters have a depth visibility of 10 meters and there is plenty to discover underwater, from sunken trees to WWII artifacts.

View over Faaker See

Faaker See's main claim to fame is having the cleanest water of any lake in Austria . In fact, the clear turquoise waters are so clean, that they're perfectly drinkable and offer stunning visibility. This makes the 2.2-square-kilometer lake a perfect destination for swimming, as the water can reach temperatures of up to 26 degrees Celsius from June to September.

The surroundings of the lake offer beautiful hiking and biking trails on nearby Mount Mittagskogel, plenty of hotels and restaurants on the shore (perfect to try local Carinthian cuisine), and a number of small beaches for soaking up the sun. Visitors can also find plenty of opportunities for yachting, canoeing, or playing volleyball on the sand.

Throughout the year, the lake becomes a hub for a number of events, including European Bike Week in September (the largest motorcycle meet in Europe), live concerts at the Finkenstein castle ruins, and beautiful advent markets in December. During winter, the lake often freezes over and becomes a natural ice-skating rink.

The emerald-green Gosausee lake lies between the Dachstein mountains of Salzkammergut, a short distance from Hallstatt .

As an ideal destination for a day trip from Salzburg , it offers enchanting views of jagged snow-capped mountains and is a perfect place for hiking and climbing as well.

Practically, Gosausee or Gosausees consists of three alpine mountain lakes . The first and largest is the Lower Gossau known as "Vorderer Gosausee", the next is the middle "Gosaulacke" so-called puddle because it is shallow and tends to change its size, even sometimes disappearing entirely, and the third is the Upper Gossau "Hinterer Gosausee".

All three are worth a visit and each offers its own spectacular views. In order to visit all of them, at least half a day is necessary to calculate what you will spend hiking.

At the first Gossausee there is a hotel with nice rooms, excellent food and boat rentals.

Lake Gossau is not really suitable for swimming because its temperature rarely exceeds 19 degrees, but on very hot summer days it is definitely worth trying to swim with snowy mountains in the background.

In winter, this magnificent area turns into a winter wonderland , offering many slopes to ski, as well as turning hiking trails into snowshoe trails. Read also: Visit Gosausee Lake, Austria

8. Grüner See (Green Lake)

Located in central Austria near Graz , Grüner See (Green Lake) is one of the most beautiful and unusual alpine lakes in Austria.

The Green Lake has gained its popularity not only because of its dynamic green color , but also because every spring, when the air temperature rises, it undergoes noticeable changes - as a result of the melting of snow and ice, water from the Hochschwab mountains enters the lake, flooding the surrounding area, which is a well-maintained nature park.

In winter, this unusual lake is very shallow - only two meters deep at its deepest point, but in spring, when the snow and ice melt and flow into it, the lake becomes even 12 meters deep.

Due to the clear green water of the lake and the unusual location, this place is very popular with divers in spring and early summer. Although it is not a typical scene of the underwater world with coral reefs and thousands of colorful fishes, it offers an unusual view of the environment, where benches, bridges, paths and trees are located under water.

The Grüner See is in a flooded stage for several months (from May to July, after which the water level begins to recede), but during the rest of the year visitors can relax here and walk along the paths, enjoy the wonderful scenery, take photos on the bridges and enjoy the beautiful green lake. 10. Lake Zell (Zeller See)

The lake is especially astounding during winter due to the frozen surface that gives way to the perfect environment for activities like ice skating and curling.

Boasting endless options of fun-filled activities like snowshoeing, snowboarding and skiing or just taking a leisurely stroll by the lakeshore.

Once summer kicks in, Lake Zell heats up to a pleasant temperature of around 20 degrees Celsius, making it an ideal destination for swimming and other water sports activities such as sailing, paddling and surfing.

Furthermore, there are plenty of hiking trails and cycling routes around this gem of a lake that both locals and tourists enjoy life no matter the season. Read also: Holidays at Lake Zell in Austria

11. Weissensee Lake (Weißensee)

Ideally located in the Austrian state of Carinthia and within the Gailtal Alps mountain range, Weissensee is Austria’s highest swimming lake .

At 930 meters above sea level, it lies in a sunny, high valley with water temperature reaching up to 25 degrees Celsius even in early fall.

One of the most unique features of Weissensee lake is its turquoise water that has also a drinking-water-quality, which along with the temperature, attracts visitors to enjoy the summer water pleasures.

All kinds of water sports are available on the Weissensee lake, from wakeboarding and waterskiing to scuba diving and ice diving.

Animal watching enthusiasts have plenty to look forward to as plenty of wildlife including geese and herons inhabit the area around the lake.

What makes this place truly unique - during wintertime, Weissensee freezes over completely to form Europe’s largest continuously frozen natural area of ice.

Ice sports enthusiasts come from around the world to experience 6.5 square kilometers of smooth, glass-like skating terrain.

Moreover, every year in January, Dutch 11-City Tour hosts a global spectacle where an astonishing 3,000 participants brave marathons spanning 50 km - 200 km! Not only that – Europe's largest traditional curling tournament also takes place here each winter.

In addition, Alpine skiing, snowshoeing and Cross-country skiing are available around the lake. Read also: Holidays at Weissensee in Austria

12. Mondsee Lake

This was probably the most scenic tour we've taken. Lake Constance a close second. Hotels, E-bikes, orientation, the navigation app were all as advertised --- 5 star!! Of course we did have perfect weather for the entire trip except for our planned rest day in Bad Goisern. Hallstatt has become a tourist hotspot and I would suggest spending your time at the Dachstein Ice Caves instead of too much time in Hallstatt. The last day riding back into Salzburg was the best with lots of climbing but worth the effort for scenery and the downhill switchbacks. Ebikes are definitely recommended even if you are an avid and fit biker.

Amazing bike tour

The trip was amazing, like riding in a postcard the whole time. Bike touring was the perfect way to experience Austria. Saw so many wonderful places, stayed in different hotels each night and got to experience all the different little towns. We had great fall weather for our trip and made for a perfect time!

The tour operator provided in person directions and instructions regarding the bike since our group used ebikes and they looked like new. In addition, the company provided a GPS app that kept us on course and we never go lost. The tour company was Eurobike and this is our second time with them and we will seek them out in the future. Lodging and food has always been great in Austria.

Fabulous trip through Austria

Excellent experience overall. Challenges with routing. Would be nice to have standard size bottle cages. Replace Eurobike app with layer on tap of Google maps, or add city and village names to Eurobike maps. Would like to have had overall map showing area we were riding.

Fantastic scenery

This was our 4th bike tour and without a doubt was the most beautiful scenery of them all. EuroBike, the local operator did a great job with an excellent briefing, with good bikes, a great itinerary on well marked Austrian bike paths and quiet country roads. This was our first tour with e-bikes, which I'd recommend given the hills. Their GPS app was problematic for us, but with their printed instructions and Google maps for bikes, we did just fine. I'd have given a 5 star rating except for the hotels... maybe because we booked late but we were assigned more 3 stars than 4, and in some cases the rooms were quite tiny. I know European hotels are not as we expect in Western hotels, but one on the hotels (Bad Goisen) was difficult to even move around with 2 (not large) suitcases. Hotel Kendler in St. Gilgen was fantastic (even at 3 stars).

Glorious views

A good tour through some great countryside with one rather dull stretch. Excellent organisation and accommodation; some bad weather the only downside.

Great adventure

We had 7 perfect days of weather and beautiful scenery at every turn. We got a real taste of Austria by traveling its backroads and bike lanes. The hotels were excellent and breakfasts were substantial and delicious. One of our best vacations ever, looking forward to another trip in the future.

This is our third bike trip, and by far the most scenic.

Lovely lakes.

Beautiful scenery and pleasant hotels. Good organisation as usual. One forest section (in pouring rain) was pure misery and wouldn’t have been terrific even in good weather.

Gorgeous Salzburg Lakes Tour!

We had an outstanding week biking around five lakes in the Salzkammergut. We were so lucky with the weather, which was sunny every day except Friday, with highs in the 70's. The views on this trip are superb. We found the instructions to be very good, the hotels were all comfortable and had unbelievable breakfasts. The service at all the hotels was great. We are working on our 5th bike tour in Europe and this is one of our favorites. We were able to swim in four of the lakes and what a refreshing and awesome experience that was, too! One wish was that it would have been nice to have a paper map of Austria, or at least the Salzkammergut so that we could get an overall idea of where we were. All in all we would highly recommend this trip. Thanks to Stefan and everyone who made it possible!

Could not have been better

Well thought out routes and hotel selection. Three 60 and 70 something guys on level 3 Salzburg Takes Tour had great trip with moderate riding. Variety of light to moderate terrain with scenery unparalleled on post cards was fantastic.

Everyone we encountered from booking to bike and route briefings was outstanding, helpful and seemed to love what they do.

I'll be looking at future trips as this one ranked very highlly!

Fantastic scenery !

Cycling in this area of Austria by bike was just perfect. The scenery was stunning. We were given a really good briefing st the start of the tour and we were provided with extensive maps and instructions to make our trip easy to follow. Having a phone no to ring if we got into trouble was also reassuring. We were mainly on good bike path so or very quite country roads so felt safe for the majority of the ride. We booked the higher grade of hotels as we wanted air conditioning in as early of hot weather. Unfortunately the hotels outside of Salzburg did not have air conditioning so this was a minor disappointment. In general the hotels in this grade of hotels were pretty good providing a good breakfast and all were very central to amenities in the town. Our favourite place Rs were Mondsee and St Wolfgang. We had some relatively hard rides quite undulating so many climbs so grade 3 would be a fair classification for this road. If your not cycle fit not miss out because of this take an E bike as it was a really pretty ride.

Gute fahren... aber.....

Let me begin by saying that we have taken several European bike tours and the was by far the most scenic. The Alps in the backround, the farms, the lakes and the quaint villages and towns were absolutely breathtaking. However, there are some things you should know. This is a level three ride. Prior to this we had only done level two and the difference can be measured in light years. This was a very challenging ride on heavy rental bikes. We are experienced cyclists, however we are seniors and found ourselves walking our bikes up many, many hills. Also much of this ride is on public roads and there was traffic and the occasional piece of farm machinery. Although most of the roads were fairly quiet, many times we found ourselves on busy highways with very narrow shoulders. This was mentioned in the tour description but in my opinion it was somewhat glossed over. If we had it to do over again we would have inquired about upgrading to a more roadworthy bike or perhaps upgraded to the e-bike. The tour company Eurobike provided us with maps and route directions, as well as placing stickers along the route to guide us. This is extremely important because this was a complicated route with many twists and turns. We both had some mechanical issues with our bikes and the company brought us new bikes in a very timely fashion. They also made excellent recommendations for lunch and dinner along the route and in the towns where we spent the night. I must say ate well on this ride. Also the hotels we stayed at along the way were excellent. Small friendly hotels with comfortable rooms and friendly staff. Each hotel provided us with a lovely buffet breakfast. Another point that gets glossed over in the tour description is the hike on the last day's ride. This is a very challenging 3K hike up and over a mountain. I felt like I was climbing Mount Everest. In conclusion I would say that if you are an experienced cyclist and are looking for a challenge and some of the most spectacular scenery in Europe then this is the tour for you. If you are just a casual or occasional rider, then you might want to choose a less demanding ride.

3-Day Tour of The Lakes Region Around Salzburg, Austria

We were grateful to have EuroBike put together a customized, 3-day self-guided tour of the Lake Region as we had limited time in the Salzburg area. The hotels selected for the tour were very familiar with handling bicyclists and very helpful in solving minor problems such as laundering wet clothes and helping us with ferry transportation and pickup on Lake Wolfgangsee. It took us awhile to get the hang of the directions as there are multiple standard tour routes and ours was customized. Once we got the hang of it, there were no problems following the routes and Eurobike signs. We began to love the minor uncertainties of figuring out our routes and being free to stop for lunch and refreshments at places of our own choice

Beautiful Bike Ride

The overall experience of this bike tour around the lakes was terrific. If I had it to do over I would do two things differently. 1.) I would rent a lighter bike, not necessarily a road bike but one that was lighter that the 21 speed comfort bike I rented from the tour company. 2.) I would not prepay for my dinner. The meals each night were very similar, and all but one night was from a very limited menu, and not off the restaurants main menu. Also only about 14€ per person per meal was allocated, no where near what was actually paid for the meals. The individuals that we interfaced with from the tour company were excellent, from the young man that met us for our orientation to the van driver that moved our gear each day.

Absolutely Fantastic time!

We just finished the ten lakes tour in June, 2016 and had the time of our life. Bike Tours Direct set us up with a local tour provider and delivered everything we hoped for. We opted for the eBikes and those are way too cool. These guys took our luggage from Gasthaus to Gasthaus (okay - inn to inn) and it was sure nice to arrive the next location and find our luggage waiting for us. Our tour took us through some amazing countryside, farms and especially the lakes. We would get to small villages in mid afternoon (i.e. - no tourists!), enjoy a local meal and head off to our next location in the morning. All the lodgings were fantastic with very friendly inn keepers. We will do this again and we will use Bike Tours Direct.

6 of the most beautiful lakes in Austria : Highlights of the Salzburg lake district

' src=

Austria has always held a special place in my heart since my very first visit. I love the lakes and mountains and the crisp alpine air and my Austria holidays always include a stay beside one of the beautiful mountain lakes.

Over the years I have been fortunate to visit a number of beautiful lakes in Austria including Zell am See and Achensee (which is Austria’s largest lake), but the lakes around Salzburg in what is known as the Salzkammergut region, are, in my opinion, some of the best Austrian lakes to visit.

In this article, I’m sharing my picks for the best places to visit in Austria for a memorable Austrian lakes holiday.  These lakes are just a few of the 50 or so lakes in the Salzkammergut lake district close to Salzburg.

This guide contains my top picks found in the Salzburg lake district, and all are also serious contenders for Austria’s best lakes. Also covered is what you should know about the pretty towns and villages dotted around the shores of each lake.

I encourage you to include at least one of them in your itinerary when you visit Austria. Mountains, sparkling green lakes and chocolate box villages make these some of the best places to visit in Austria.

What's in this Article

Wolfgangsee (Lake Wolfgang)

Austria has many beautiful lakes and Lake Wolfgang is no exception. Stretching around ten kilometres from east to west, there are three main towns on Lake Wolfgang which lies at the foot of the Schafberg (Sheep Mountain).

Like most of the lakeside towns in Austria, outdoor pursuits are plentiful at Lake Wolfgang.  I first visited the Austrian lake district as it was the start and end point for a self-guided cycling tour my husband and I did ( which I wrote about here ), however if you’d prefer your Austria vacation to be more relaxed, Lake Wolfgang is perfect for you, too.

St Gilgen and Wolfgangsee Austria

One of the best ways to visit the towns on Lake Wolfgang during the summer months is to catch the regular ferry which departs at least four times per day from Spring through to Autumn.

Winter is also a fantastic time to visit Wolfgangsee. Austria’s Christmas celebrations are legendary and there’s no finer example than in the towns around the lake when the Wolfgangsee Advent festival is in full swing.  One of the highlights is St. Wolfgang’s 19-metre tall floating lantern which lights up the lake.

Find out more about Christmas at Wolfgangsee in this article .

St. Wolfgang

One of the most popular resort towns in all of the Salzkammergut lakes, St. Wolfgang offers something for everyone.

The busy little Austria lake town is home to a great variety of shops and hotels, restaurants and cafes serving delicious traditional Austrian food . There’s even a Christmas shop which is open all year round. Quaint cobbled streets lined with frescoed buildings add to the town’s charm.

Sitting right beside the lake, the Pilgrimage Church is well worth a visit.  The church’s spire can be seen from afar but it’s the famous Pacher Altar, created in the 15th century, which is the real drawcard.

Another well-known building in town (at least with German-speakers) is the Hotel Weisses Rossl which was made famous by the movie “Im Wiessen Rossl am Wolfgangsee”. Its lakeside terrace restaurant offers superb views across the lake.

For even better views of Wolfgangsee, as well as nearby Mondsee and Attersee, you can’t go past a ride on the cogwheel railway to the Schafberg (Sheep Mountain).

The Schafbergbahn is Austria’s steepest cog railway with a gradient of up to 26% and has been in operation since 1893.  In around 35 minutes, it transports passengers from St. Wolfgang to the Schafberg summit at 1783 metres above sea level.

Up here, the views are breathtaking.

Trains operate daily from mid May until the end of September.

Given its proximity to Salzburg , St. Wolfgang is popular with day trippers.  A number of day trips from Salzburg are available (click here to browse the options) but if you have your own car, it takes less than an hour to drive from St. Wolfgang to Salzburg and vice versa.

Where to stay in St. Wolfgang

Hotel Peter (4* hotel)

Overlooking Wolfgangsee, Hotel Peter offers a selection of rooms and suites all with lake views and balcony, with some two bedroom suites available for families.

Located on St. Wolfgang’s main street (one way traffic only), the hotel is just a couple of minutes’ walk to the centre of town. Guests can dine in the either the modern tavern, Paul de Wirt restaurant or, in fine weather, on the terrace. Traditional Austrian fare is the speciality.

Apartments in St. Wolfgang – Should you prefer to stay in an apartment, I can highly recommend this stunning lakefront apartment .  I spent five nights here and loved it!

The small village of St. Gilgen, at the northern end of Wolfgangsee lake , is famous as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s mother, Anna Maria Pertl. Her home, which features a lovely frescoed wall, is close to the lake and can be visited during the summer.

Beside the house is a statue of the famous composer and a fountain featuring his mother.

Mozart house St Gilgen Austria

The pretty town features a number of souvenir shops, cafes and restaurants, as well as a lido (lakeside swimming area) which opens during the summer.  Be sure to look out for the Town Hall with its pretty facade.

Towering over St. Gilgen is the local mountain, the Zwölferhorn (Twelve Horn), at 1522 metres.  Many skiers and snowshoers spend their holidays in St. Gilgen as the Zwölferhorn is great for winter sports as well as hiking in the warmer months.

If you’re driving near St. Gilgen, you might see the distinctive red and yellow gondola cabins overhead as the cable car line passes over the main road!  The Zwölferhorn Mountain Cable Car is open year round.   Click here to visit the official website .

Lake Wolfgang Austria

Strobl is another small Austrian town on Lake Wolfgang that is worth a visit. Plenty of lakeside activities are available and just out of town you’ll find the Summer rodelbahn, a luge track that winds its way down a steep hill.

This small town offers a timeless charm characterised by a blend of historic and modern architectural styles. In one place, visitors can see traditional Austrian country houses, contemporary hotels and impressive Art Nouveau homes.

The Strobl area is also famous thanks to Bad Ischl, an Austrian spa town nearby. Once Bad Ischl became well known, Strobl also morphed into a sizable resort attracting well-heeled visitors from all over the land. Now, various events are held here all year round.

Strobl highlights also include the Postalm, Austria’s biggest alpine pasture. The area is also abundant in pristine beaches plus the local hiking and skiing trails, which are set among the natural landscape surrounding the town.

Traunsee (Lake Traun)

Traunsee holds the title of Austria’s deepest lake, thanks in part to its idyllic position at the foot of the Traunstein massif.

Surrounded by lush meadows and forests, there are ample opportunities to enjoy bike rides or walks in Traunsee, as well as the many water activities on offer.

In winter, the popular Feuerkogel ski area attracts to families to Traunsee lake. Austrians come here for skiing and snowboarding.

Traunsee from Gmunden

Gmunden is a larger town at the northern end of Traunsee. Once a commercial salt city, today it is one of the most popular Austrian lakes resorts and is highly regarded as a wellness centre.

The town’s long lakeside promenade comes alive in summer with ice cream sellers and souvenir vendors touting their wares, but this doesn’t diminish the beauty of the town.

Gmunden is famous for the ceramics that have been produced in the town for over 500 years.  With their distinctive green and white pattern, a piece of Gmunden ceramic makes a unique souvenir of your visit.  The Gmunden Ceramic shop is open 6 days a week and factory tours are also available.

There are numerous sites in Gmunden that are worth a look including the Town Hall, the Parish Church – which has three naves dating back to 1301 – and the ceramic fountain on Rinnholz Square, which features a man carrying a lump of salt.

Schloss Ort Gmunden

One must-visit site is that of Schloss Ort, a 15th Century castle built on a tiny island.  The castle is reached by walking across a 123-metre wooden bridge. Exhibitions are often held in the castle and it’s a popular place for weddings.

Water sports, such as windsurfing and water skiing, are popular on Lake Traun, and the large lido (lake swimming pool) is suitable for all ages.

From Gmunden, boats sail to Ebensee at the southern end of lake where you can catch a cable car to Feuerkogel year round, or return to Gmunden.

Other towns on Traunsee that you might like to visit include Ebensee and Traunkirchen.

Attersee (Lake Atter)

Attersee lake, Austria, is the largest of the Salzkammergut lakes, and is one of the best lakes in Austria for windsurfing, water skiing and sailing, thanks to its warm water and reliable breezes.

Attersee, which is sometimes referred to as Kammersee, is also one of the best swimming lakes in Austria and is popular with divers due to its unusually clear water.

Attersee Austria

Schorfling – Seewalchen

The twin towns of Schorfling and Seewalchen are ideally situated at the northern end of Attersee. Both are popular summer resorts offering heaps of lakeside activities but culture vultures are well catered for, too.

At Kammer-Schorfling, art lovers can visit the Gustav Klimt Gallery.  The famous Austrian artist holidayed on Lake Attersee for many years and it was here that he created many of his much-loved landscapes.

You can retrace Klimt’s footsteps with a walk along the Klimt Artist Trail and admire the bronze bust of him which sits on the lake shore.

The Gustav Klimt Zentrum is open between 1 May and 30 September.

Other small towns and villages cling to the shoreline around Lake Atter including Attersee (the town), Nussdorf and Steinbach.

Hallstatter See (Lake Hallstatt)

Nestled at the foot of the Dachstein, Hallstatter See is widely regarded as one of the prettiest lakes in Europe. The Hallstatt-Dachstein region became a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1997 and it’s not hard to see why.

Much-photographed, Hallstatt is a postcard-perfect village on the edge of Hallstattersee (Lake Hallstatt) and is undoubtedly one of the best lakes in Salzkammergut.

Hallstatt Austria

For a small Austrian village there are plenty of highlights which include the colourful houses and buildings, the lovely town square and of course the stunning water views.

While the incredible scenery is what attracts many first-time visitors to Hallstatt, people return here year after year once they discover the town’s unique blend of attractions.

Hallstatt is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site, and a popular inclusion on many an Austrian itinerary. During our visit, however, a highlight was the fact that many day-trippers departed before sunset, leaving us to explore in peace while enjoying the silence.

It’s fun simply to wander around town, stopping to browse in the shops or for refreshments at the cafes, and you can also discover a couple of interesting churches and the somewhat macabre bone house, where about 1,200 painted skulls are on show.

Hallstatt’s other attractions include the skywalk and 5fingers viewing platforms. You can also hire a boat or book a cruise on the lake during your visit.

With easy access from Hallstatt to the nearby salt mine, ice caves and Dachstein holiday mountain, it’s a great place to visit on a day trip from Salzburg ( find out more by clicking here ) or, even better, to spend a few days.

You can read my detailed guide to visiting Hallstatt by > clicking here .

Hallstatt Austria 800

Just five kilometres around the lake from Hallstatt lies Obertraun which is the closest town to the Dachstein ice caves.

Obertraun is popular during both the warmer and colder seasons, as active sorts descend on this small Austrian town to ski and snowboard, swim or kayak across the lake or to take to the hiking and mountain biking trails that criss-cross the area.

Mondsee (Lake Mond)

Another of the beautiful lakes near Salzburg, Mondsee is one of the largest lakes in the Salzkammergut region and is said to be the warmest.

The Austrian lake town of Mondsee was once home to the country’s oldest monastery (founded in 745 AD) but today its most famous site is without doubt St. Michael’s Basilica.

Wedding Church Mondsee Austria

This beautiful church, which stands in the centre of the town, was built in the 15th century in the gothic style, became famous as it was the setting for the wedding in the movie “The Sound of Music”.

The ‘Wedding Church’, as it is commonly known, is the most visited church in Austria with more than 200,000 people visiting it every year.  It’s become a modern day pilgrimage site for fans of the movie who often spend their holidays in Mondsee just so they can visit the church.

Whilst the exterior of the Basilica is impressive – the twin towers reach 52 metres – it’s the interior that will take your breath away.  The three-aisled church is ornately decorated with a gilded altar, painted ceiling and jewelled statues.

Entry to the Basilica is free (donations are welcome) and you can visit daily from 9am to 7pm.

Mondsee Austria

Mondsee is an old market town and the historic centre, with its colourful buildings and cobbled streets, is the perfect place to sit and take in the beauty of the Basilica.

If you’re lucky enough to be visiting Lake Mondsee during Advent, the annual Advent Market is held in the square at the front of the Basilica.

Just a few minutes’ walk from the town centre is the sparkling lake where’ll you find plenty of water activities to keep you occupied, a large swimming area and numerous cafes and restaurants.

Fuschlsee (Lake Fuschl)

With a shore length of less than ten kilometres, Fuschlsee is one of the smaller lakes in Salzkammergut, Austria but that doesn’t mean it lacks appeal.  This is the place to visit if you want to stay at one of the quieter lakes in Austria lake district.

Fuschlsee Austria

Fuschl am See

Just 25 kilometres from Salzburg, Fuschl am See is a lovely village with a population of just over 1,000.  The pretty town centre offers a few shops and services and numerous places to stay.

A number of lakeside hotels line the shore, where there’s also a small sandy beach, a jetty and a large swimming complex.  Watersports are popular activities in summer whilst it’s possible to ice skate on the lake during the winter months.

A relaxing way to appreciate the beauty of the lake, is to take a stroll on the walking path that circles the lake. At the far end of Fuschlsee, at Hof bei Salzburg, you’ll come to Schloss Fuschl, a former hunting lodge dating back to 1450.

Now a hotel and spa (it’s one of Marriott’s Luxury Collection Resort & Spa hotels), it’s worth a look around the gardens even if you can’t afford to stay the night !

How to get to the Austrian Lakes

The Austrian Lakes are located to the east of Salzburg. Most, if not all, of the towns mentioned above are accessible by public transport.

Larger towns generally have railway stations but those that don’t are often serviced by Post Bus, the public bus service. Timetables can be found on the  Austrian Railways website .

There’s also a Hop on Hop Off bus service which operates daily between late March and late October and from Thursday to Sunday during Advent (late November to Christmas).  Commentary is available in 13 languages.   Click here to purchase tickets.

The green line travels a circular route every 90 minutes from Salzburg to Fuschlsee, Wolfgangsee and Mondsee with a total of ten stops en-route.

The red line – which connects with the green line – travels from St. Gilgen to St. Wolfgang with numerous stops en-route.

If arriving by car, I suggest making a base at one of the lakes and visiting the other lakes on day trips. All of the lakes are within an easy drive of each other.
