The best of Mong Kok - where to shop and eat in kowloon

A Day in Mongkok: What to do and where to go!

The best of mong kok….

I know, I know, venturing to busy Mong Kok may seem like a scary, unnecessary feat (just the thought of the crowds can be overwhelming!). But hear me out! Mong Kok is by far one of the best places to go for bargain hunting and amazing food , offering up some steals and deals, local treats and a glimpse into a different side of Hong Kong culture. Feeling up for some exploration, but don’t know where to begin? To help you along, I’ve put together a little step-by-step day guide that will help you have the best day in Mong Kok! Time to try out something new, survive the crowds and I promise you’ll still feel happy at the end of the day. Just go with a sense of adventure, patience and curiosity to discover some new local hotspots you wouldn’t have known about otherwise…

*Start from the Yau Ma Tei station, near Gala Place*

12.30pm – Lunch hour

Sour and Spicy Noodles , 1/F, Dundas Square, 43 Dundas Street, Mong Kok, Kowloon, Hong Kong

Days don’t really start until late afternoon in Mong Kok, so why not begin your day late and enjoy having the morning in bed? By the time you get out and about you’ll probably be in the mood for food, and if you’re craving something spicy, then check out Sour and Spicy Noodles . They have got the best Chinese spicy noodles and chicken , or if you can’t handle the heat then you can choose the non-spicy option. Best of all, it’s wallet friendly so you won’t be breaking the bank. Head on up the stairs from the street or take the lift after entering a business-looking building. There’ll be people haggling you to go to the various cafes upstairs too (food quality varies but they’re cheap and you could hang out there for hours with electric plugs to use). Gala Place’s basement also houses 18 Grams Café and a few sit-down Japanese restos that are worth checking out.

1.30pm – Sneakers, clothes and gifts

Trendy Zone , 580 Nathan Road, Mong Kok (entrance on Dundas Street), Kowloon, Hong Kong

After lunch, head over to Trendy Zone on the same street and enter a paradise of sneakers, stuffed toys and clothes. You’ll find all sorts of things in there, including zippo lighters, watches, gag gift items, puzzles and all kinds of cartoon merchandise and toys. These make great gifts and the prices there are usually lower than Central or flagship stores.

You’ll also find a huge amount of clothes and accessories for both ladies and gents, with varying price points and quality. There are also shops dedicated to limited edition sneakers and tees. Although the targeted audience is younger teens, it’s still a great place to get a sense of what’s popular in Hong Kong and buy a cute and kitschy thing or two.

3.30pm – Collectible toys for adults!

CTMA Centre/ToyMart , Sai Yeung Choi Street South, Mong Kok, Kowloon, Hong Kong

After a taste of the trends, turn a corner into Sai Yeung Choi Street and you’ll see the huge CTMA Centre. It’s known for its shops selling collectible toys , figures and hobby items , which are far from toys for kids! They could sell up to thousands of dollars and some are even limited edition or pre-ordered items . You can also find Japanese gashapon (capsuled toys) and micro toys sold in a set, saving you the trouble of repeated items. If you’re into toys and figurines, give this place a visit! If not, just head on up for a quick look around and check out the rest of the shops selling random things from clothes to stationeries . There are many levels both above and below, so check them out and explore.

4:30pm – Tech & tea time

Sim City , 47-51 Shan Tung Street, Mong Kok (Adjacent to Nathan Road), Kowloon, Hong Kong

Teawood Taiwanese Café & Restaurant , 10/F, King Wah Centre, 628 Nathan Road (entrance on Shan Tung Street next to Sim City), Kowloon, Hong Kong

After shopping for the ladies, it’s time to find something for the gents. Sim City is perfect for all the geeks and tech lovers, because it’s home to countless shops selling all things digital and technological . From secondhand lens and cameras, to the largest array of headphones ,   this place has everything tech you could ever need. They even have smartphone and camera accessories  available, all under one roof.

The three-level mall will have all your gadgets happily protected and pretty without damaging your wallet too badly. But make sure that after targeting your products you price check around, because prices do vary between shops!

If you’re feeling worn out from all this retail therapy, head next door to Teawood at King Wah Centre for some hearty ice-cream with toast that’s buried in a bread tower (tastes and looks so much better than it sounds!).

mong kok fish market - kowloon, Hong Kong

6.30pm – Shop and stroll

Sneakers Street – the stretch of Fa Yuen Street nearest to the Mong Kok MTR, not to be confused with the Prince Edward stretch!

Ladies Street – same stretch but Tung Choi Street, parallel to Sneakers Street

Continue walking towards Prince Edward, parallel to Nathan Road and away from Yau Ma Tei and you can take your pick from Sneakers Street or the Ladies Market . Sneakers Street is an endless stretch of sneakers and shoes , from limited edition parallel import to discounted items. The Ladies Market will dazzle you with countless offerings of imitation bags, shoes, jewellery and souvenirs ! If you’re visiting the Ladies Market, then make sure you bargain for a good price, sometimes even 50% lower, and if you’re lusting for sneakers then don’t miss the Nike stores dedicated to different sports (skateboard, basketball & football). This is one of Hong Kong’s shopping havens so make sure you go with plenty of cash (although keep an eye on your purse) and get those presents in!

8.30pm –Back to civilization

Langham Place , 8 Argyle Street, Mong Kok, Kowloon, Hong Kong

Congratulations! You made it through a day in Mong Kok! Time to reward yourself with a trip back to civilisation in the form of the biggest and most commercialised mall in the area – Langham Place! Take a trip up the looooong escalator, chill out at Hui Lau Shan, or shop some more. This mall is the one-stop place for clothes, food, beauty products and even toys and CDs , just in case you’ve forgotten something. Plus, it has the only really hygienic toilets in the area, so enjoy!

heart-black

Phew ! Wasn’t that a busy day? Now that you’re armed with this handy step-by-step day guide, you can take on Mong Kok in all its glory. Just one more tip from me to you: try not to go on the weekends, especially Sunday, unless you want to really experience the crowds!

Mong Kok: Ultimate Guide

The best of the world’s most densely populated district condensed into one great list

As the world’s busiest and most densely populated urban district in the world, packing an average of 130,000 people into every square kilometre, it should come to no surprise that Mong Kok is full of hidden gems. Aside from being a famous shopping destination with massive shopping malls and street markets , the neighbourhood is home to themed cafés and a whole host of spectacular local eateries. Don’t know where to start? Read on...

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

The best things to and eat in Mong Kok

4ward fitness.

  • Sport and fitness
  • Gyms and fitness centres

4ward Fitness

Claiming to be the city’s only Holofit Functional Traning Zone, this Korean-style fitness studio is decked out with fancy high-tech equipment for seriously fun workouts – imagine a mash-up between Twister and Dance Dance Revolution. There’s even a 4D indoor spinning studio. The 24-hour gym also offers an array of small group classes including K-pop Dance and Korean military training for the seriously hardcore. Starts from $599.

9 ¾ Cafe

It’s 21 years since the first Harry Potter novel was published and Pottermania is as strong as ever in Hong Kong. This ‘magic-themed’ café (to avoid copyright issues) is packed with plenty of Potter memorabilia and music from the films playing in the background. Enjoy 9 ¾’s take on Butterbeer, numerous concoctions served in light bulbs and a variety of Western fare. It’s no Michelin fare, so expect your camera to eat first.

Akune Wagyu Tachikui Yakinikumise

Akune Wagyu Tachikui Yakinikumise

Akune Wagyu Tachikui Yakinikumise is the first standing restaurant that serves Japanese-style BBQ in Hong Kong. Offering different cuts of A4 and A5 Wagyu beef from Kagoshima, all beef cuts are charged by piece with the cheapest costing only $12. There is also a variety of sauces, salt and spicy powder available for you to match with. An unmissable place for all carnivores indeed.

Café de Kitten

Café de Kitten

Hong Kong is no stranger to cat cafés but Café de Kitten is among the best. With fake ivy strewn across the walls and wooden furniture, the premises are bright and airy and free of any animal odour, which can be so unsavoury in a restaurant. Tuck into Western food as friendly resident cats come up to greet you and play. You can even bring your favourite feline buddy here to socialise, too.

Chuan Spa Hong Kong

  • Health and beauty

Chuan Spa Hong Kong

Housed inside Mong Kok’s Cordis Hotel, Chuan Spa welcomes any tired Hongkongers to get pampered with their 60 holistic treatments that are inspired by traditional Chinese medicine. Make your way up a candle-it staircase beside a water wall before immersive yourself in a massage. There are several signature treatements that Chuan offers including the stone therapy and the lymphatic massage, as well as traditional Chinese treatments like cupping and scraping.

Fei Jie

Street food is a staple in Hong Kong cuisine but few compare to this popular local vendor. While Fei Jie – an affectionate name for a fat lady – offers expected options like cuttlefish balls and soy-braised snacks, the menu is famed for its more unusual yet insanely delicious skewers. Namely turkey kidney and pig offal. It may not sound appetising but throw on some sweet sauce and a dash of mustard and you’ll know why there’re long queues every day.

The Madhouse

  • Craft beer pubs

The Madhouse

A cosy, modern and robustly stocked little beer joint, The Madhouse is the ideal spot to sample some of Europe and Asia’s (and Hong Kong’s) finest craft beers. Chill out and select from one of the 18 taps on offer or one of the 10 bottle and can options. For newbies, the bar staff are eager to provide useful advice to help you select the perfect pint.

Market Hotpot

  • Tsim Sha Tsui

Market Hotpot

This Mong Kok restaurant is continually heaving. With interiors that look like a mashup between a wet   market, a seafood market and a meat stall, it perfectly  reflects how fresh all the ingredients are – the chef personally handpicks all the seafood and meat daily. There are more than 10 soup bases to pick from but the chicken and fish maw soup, and peppered pig’s stomach and chicken soup are among the best.

Mong Kok Computer Centre

Mong Kok Computer Centre

Your one-stop shop, or rather mall, for all your tech and computer needs. Come here to pick up computer hardware at competitive prices and a bigger selection of gadgetry than’s available in Wan Chai and even Sham Shui Po. While there are fewer choices then Golden Computer Centre when it comes to video games, MKCC is certainly less claustrophobic. And if you’re planning to build your own PC rig, there’s no better place to start.

Mong Kok Ladies’ Market

  • Attractions

Mong Kok Ladies’ Market

This is the  place to shop when it comes to knock-off clothes and accessories. While Hong Kong is famed for its malls and brand name shops, sometimes you just don’t have the cash. But  it’s not all dodgy fakes though, you can find tons of  cheap and basic clothing at these street stalls. Sometimes you can hunt down surprisingly decent products at bargain prices.

Explore another local ‘hood

Sham shui po: the ultimate guide.

  • Things to do

Sham Shui Po: The Ultimate Guide

Sham Shui Po is a mecca for shopoholics in Hong Kong. Electronics, computer gadgets, accessories and even children’s toys – SSP is a place where you can find some of the best shopping streets in all Hong Kong.

One Dim Sum

One Dim Sum is a popular local dim sum spot known for its cheap prices and delectable bites. While the cha chaan teng (茶餐廳; Hong Kong-style tea restaurant) is officially located in Prince Edward, it would be a shame not to include it in our Mong Kok guide, as it’s situated at a walking distance from Mong Kok East.

Like most dim sum places, the restaurant has a wide range of delicacies beyond dim sum itself. Their must-try signature dishes include the shrimp & vegetable dumplings ($24) and siu mai ($30). Before you leave, be sure to indulge in the steamed custard buns ($18)—the perfect end to a delightful meal.

If you're looking for something hot, the s picy pork bibimbap ($60) has the perfect balance of flavours. The chicken bulgogi lunch box with five sides ($70) and original kimbap ($40) are also popular choices amongst customers. We recommend getting takeout as the restaurant is always jam-packed with limited seating spaces.

You can also choose to add a beverage to the set for an additional $18— the iced peach tea is the perfect drink to balance out all the flavours.

While they have many classics available, their menu is filled with creative fusion chicken wing flavours. If you’re feeling adventurous and in the mood for something sweet, the bubble tea-inspired chicken wings with brown sugar tapioca pearls & lemongrass is definitely a creative option.

Here is a comprehensive guide to the best things to do in this vibrant neighbourhood – a must-visit when you’re  exploring Hong Kong !

11 BEST THINGS TO DO IN MONG KOK, HONG KONG

Mong kok markets:.

Mong Kok is famous for its markets, so make time to experience its two most famous night markets: the Ladies Market and Temple Street Night Market.

Both markets are located just off Nathan Road, and are great places to buy souvenirs and clothes, or just soak up the atmosphere!

1. Temple Street Night Market:

Temple Street Night Market comes alive after sunset. Stretching across Temple Street, this buzzing market offers a variety of goods, from affordable clothing to local street food.

Make sure to sample some food here: Temple Market is known for its great seafood restaurants and street food stalls.

The lively atmosphere, vibrant lights, and street performers at Temple Street Night Market really make it a must-visit in the evening!

To get to Temple Street Night Market, get off at Jordan MTR and follow signs for Temple Street at exit A. Turn right at Jordan Road and then right onto Temple Street.

Top tip: keep walking along Temple Street, through the park, and you will find more stalls where everything is half the price that it is in the busy touristy part of the market!

2. Ladies’ Market

Ladies Market is another market with a vibrant atmosphere worth visiting when you’re in Mong Kok. It’s located about a mile from Temple Street Night Market – and it’s a lot bigger! Plus it’s open during the daytime too!

Spanning Tung Choi Street, Ladies’ Market is a shopper’s paradise, featuring over 100 stalls offering trendy clothing, accessories, and trinkets. Bargaining is expected!

You can find a lot of similar products at both markets, but the Ladies Market focuses more on clothes and accessories.

The closest MTR station is Mong Kok station: follow the signs at exit D for Tung Choi Street.

3. Sneaker Street (Fa Yuen Street Market)

Next to the Ladies Market is Fa Yuen Street, commonly known as Sneaker Street – a bustling market that’s an absolute haven for sneaker lovers. Here you can buy trainers/sneakers at discounted prices from almost any brand!

4. Goldfish Market

And for a really unique experience, visit the Goldfish Market on Tung Choi Street North. There is a colourful array of tropical fish and exotic pets here, with hundreds of bags of tropical fish at insanely high prices.

Personally I don’t support animals to be sold this way, but it provides an interesting look into local life.

5. Langham Place

If you prefer shopping centres as opposed to markets, head to the huge Langham Place shopping complex where you’ll find over 200 stores, including international brands, trendy boutiques, and a diverse range of dining options.

6. Try The Street Food

Mong Kok is a haven for foodies, and its streets are adorned with stalls offering delicious food!

Make sure to try the local favourite egg waffles, plus – fish balls and stinky tofu if you’re brave enough! Mong Kok’s Fa Yuen Street is particularly famous for its array of street food options.

7. Eat At The World’s Cheapest Michelin-Starred Restaurant!

This is a great bucketlist activity to do when in Asia : experience dim sum at Tim Ho Wan, the world’s cheapest Michelin-starred restaurant! Their renowned barbecue pork buns are delicious!

8. Yuen Po Street Bird Garden

The Yuen Po Street Bird Garden is a charming traditional garden where locals gather with their pet birds. It’s a great place to escape the hustle and bustle, and really reminded me of the bird club at Culture Park in Saigon (one of the most unique things to do in Saigon )!

I just love watching the locals in Asia going about their everyday life, I find it so fascinating!

Admire the birds and their owners, explore the garden’s architecture, and enjoy the calm away from the busy city!

9. Mong Kok’s Cat Cafés:

If you enjoy cat cafés, be sure to check out Urban Cafe on Nathan Road, or Cat Jungle, located on Sai Yeung Choi St South. They are both excellent cat cafes, full of lots of gorgeous cats (sometimes even kittens!).

Not only do you get to cuddle the cats, but they have some delicious cakes, coffees and meals for you to enjoy in between your sightseeing.

10. Street Performances at Sai Yeung Choi Street

Stroll down Sai Yeung Choi Street and enjoy the lively street performances of musicians, dancers, and other artists. There is such a vibrant and energetic atmosphere here!

11. Nathan Road At Night

If you’ll be visiting Mong Kok during the day, make sure to also come back or stay until sunset to experience Nathan Road at night. At night time the streets become so vibrant, full of old bright illuminated Mandarin signs and neon lights, and you can feel the atmosphere of old Hong Kong.

There are plenty of restaurants and street food options too!

Hopefully you will enjoy exploring Mong Kok as much as I did! With its diverse array of attractions and its blend of traditional and contemporary Hong Kong, it’s a fantastic place to visit.

Whether you’re here for the food, the shopping or the culture, this vibrant district really has something to offer everyone!

It’s all about markets in Mong Kok—clothes, souvenirs, birds, flowers, even sneakers—each in its own district, focusing on a specific good or commodity. You could spend half a day or so exploring the markets by foot, starting from the Ladies Market, which is close to Mong Kok MTR Station, and heading north to finish at a quaint Bird Market, close to Prince Edward MTR Station. There’s lots to see and explore in between these two landmarks, so read on to learn about the highlights.

What to see and do in Mong Kok

For detailed info, make sure to check out our guide .

Ladies Market is the biggest and most popular one in the area, and even if you don’t like shopping it’s a really interesting experience just walking through it. The shopkeepers at this open air street market don’t start setting up the stalls until later in the day, so don’t bother going in the morning. From 4pm it’s a pedestrian zone, and by night time a bustling, bright, crowded area with lots to see.

Ladies Market in Mong Kok

Next up is the Goldfish Market, where you probably won’t buy anything, but it’s cool to walk around and see the hundreds of bags of brightly coloured fish hanging up for sale. Goldfish are considered auspicious in Chinese culture, but the market sells a lot more than just goldfish, including reptiles, such as turtles.

Around the corner is the Flower Market, where the entire street is in full bloom. The wholesalers around here sell the freshest flowers year round, but around Chinese New Year it is particularly vibrant and busy.

Next to the Flower Market is the Yuen Po Street Bird Garden, where every day old gents take their birds for a ‘walk’ in beautiful handmade wood cages. You’ll also notice the bags and cages of crickets and grasshoppers, which they feed to the birds with chopsticks. After the Bird Garden, it’s an easy walk to Prince Edward MTR Station, to continue with your sightseeing.

What to eat and drink in Mong Kok

If you haven’t tried Hong Kong–style street food yet, Mong Kok is the perfect place to do it. Food stands are on almost every corner selling quintessential Hong Kong snacks and drinks, such as cane juice. You’ll no doubt smell the sweetness of egg waffles, the pungent punch of stinky tofu, and the spiciness of curry fish balls, all wafting through the air. If bubbling pots of meat stew or pig intestines on a stick isn’t your cup of tea, then try out sweet treats like pineapple buns (spoiler alert: does not contain pineapple) and Portuguese egg tarts, or ‘siu mai’ dumplings.

Hong Kong Street Food Stall

You can easily wander around the lanes behind Ladies Market (Tung Choi Street) looking for somewhere local to eat, and you certainly have a lot of choices.

Hay Wong has a picture menu showing which delicious dim sum they serve, which makes ordering a lot easier. A popular Japanese restaurant is Lo Ku Ma Ru, with fresh sashimi and a wide variety of sushi. And Little Fusion is a local eatery offering Hong Kong-style Italian food at very good prices.

When evening comes, if you’re feeling for Western fare and some live music, hit up The Live House which has a great atmosphere, pasta and steak dishes, and local bands playing all night.

One particular bar in Mong Kok proves that you don’t have to be on the waterfront to have awesome views. The Garage Bar at the Cordis Hotel has a funky red and black motif, a huge open-air terrace, and a wide range of craft brews on tap.

Where to stay in Mong Kok

When you stay in Mong Kok, you’re really in the thick of it, and you can expect lots of crowds and noise as soon as you step out of the hotel.

There’s a high concentration of hotels along Nathan Road, and a number of hostels offering budget options such as dormitories, if you’re on a tight budget.

About a 10-minute walk from the Mong Kok MTR Station is the popular Metropark Hotel , which has a fitness centre, a coffee shop, and a bar.

Stanford Hotel is also very well located and walking distance to all the attractions, with clean, spacious rooms.

The Hilton Garden Inn has bigger than average rooms, as well as a lovely outdoor swimming pool, which is a welcome respite from the notorious Hong Kong heat.
