Guide to the Whitsundays

  • Getting to the Whitsundays
  • When to visit

Sailing through blue waters, snorkelling above gardens of coral and coastal views more beautiful than a postcard – it’s all waiting for you in the Whitsundays.

A cluster of islands located 55km (34mi) off the Queensland coast, the Whitsundays offer everything you’d expect from a tropical paradise; turquoise waters that meet swirling white sands, beautiful secluded beaches and world-class luxury accommodation. It’s certainly relaxing, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find incredible adventure experiences. The proximity to the Great Barrier Reef means the Whitsundays are a mecca for sailing, diving and snorkelling, and there are plenty of opportunities to tick off some bucket-list worthy activities like swimming with turtles or flying over famous Heart Reef.

You can get to the Whitsundays via two airports; Hamilton Island Airport (HTI) is located on Hamilton Island and Whitsundays Coast Airport (PPP) is located about 25 minutes from Airlie Beach on the mainland.

  • Whitsundays Coast Airport (PPP) services direct flights from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns, Toowoomba and the Sunshine Coast
  • Hamilton Island Airport (HTI) services direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, so it’s easy to connect your international flight with a flight to one of the Whitsunday airports
  • Car hire is available at Whitsundays Coast Airport

On the mainland, hire car is the easiest way to get around, but there are a few options for moving between the mainland and islands, and between the different islands. Take a transfer, go bareboating (skippering your own boat) or join a range of single-day and multi-day cruises.

The Whitsundays boasts mild temperatures and about 300 days of sun each year.

Spring is when the Whitsundays really show off with consistently sunny weather, low humidity and perfect conditions for swimming, snorkelling and diving. The wet season is characterised by tropical showers, which are usually brief.

  • High season: Spring (September to November)
  • Low season: Wet season (January to March)
  • Don’t miss: During winter (June to August) you can witness pods of humpback whales as they arrive to give birth, socialise and mate

The Whitsundays

Scattered like emeralds on aquamarine velvet, the Whitsunday Islands are one of Australia's loveliest destinations, an unmatched playground for boaters, divers, campers, fishers and resort-loungers. Sheltered by the Great Barrier Reef, these warm, rarely ruffled waters are particularly perfect for sailing, as exploited by the 100-plus yachts that gather here each August for Airlie Beach Race Week. Traditional home of the Ngaro people, these 74 islands also shelter some of the oldest archaeological sites on Australia's east coast. Five of them have resorts, but most are uninhabited, and several offer back-to-nature beach camping and bushwalking. Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island is acknowledged as the finest beach in the Whitsundays (some say the world), while mainland hub Airlie Beach, the major gateway to the islands, offers a wealth of tours and activities, plenty of eating and sleeping choices, and a hard-partying backpacker scene.

Whitsunday Itinerary 7 Days

7 Days in the Whitsundays: Ultimate Guide (+ Sailing Ideas, Tips)

Come, explore the Australian paradise in our 7 days in the Whitsundays

Stretched-out coastlines, white-sandy beaches, turquoise blue waters, and rich marine life – defines the beauty of the Whitsunday Islands . Home to 74 islands, the Whitsundays is one of Australia’s most ever-green paradises. From snorkelling the crystal clear waters of the barrier reef to feeling the luxury essence of Hamilton Island, there’s a lot to see and discover at the Whitsundays.

In this article, we’ve curated an in-depth guide to the Whitsunday Islands. These include understanding the islands, why you need to visit them, best day trips, excursions, and amazing sailing tips & ideas. Along with these resources, I’ve designed a perfect  itinerary for 7 days in the Whitsundays . The trip will journey to unique bay areas, islands, protected zones, snorkelling & scuba-diving sites.

About Whitsunday Islands in Australia

The Whitsundays is a large collection of 74 tropical islands based on the Great Barrier Reef. Located 55kms from the central coast of Queensland, it’s one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations. Today, visitors travel from all over the world to witness what a marvel Whitsunday is. It’s truly an astonishing place that tops everyone’s travel bucket list.

Now, you don’t have to visit all 74 islands in one go. Of course, that’s nearly impossible unless you make this your ‘to-do’ list. However, there are a few islands that definitely stand out from the tourism point of view.

First is  Hayman Island  because of its luxurious inland property – InterContinental Hayman Island Resort. Hayman is definately the place for you if you fancy living up at Whitsundays private island. Next is Hamilton Island , which is more popular due to accessibility via flights to major cities. Most of the catamaran cruises and private charters depart to this island from Airlie Beach. Last but not the least,  Whitsunday Island  , which is home to one of the world’s most iconic beache – Whitehaven.

Most of the islands harbouring at the Whitsundays are designated national parks. So you can expect all beaches to be clean and pristine. What’s more, is that the waters provide a great opportunity for surfers and divers.

Paradise island of Whitsunday

Why Visit the Whitsundays

The Whitsunday Islands brims with rich marine and great aquatic treasures. Before my trip, I felt this place was too good to be true. I had seen many pictures online but always felt, ‘Oh, this is just another island’. But, honestly? I am glad I got proved wrong. The Whitsundays are not your ordinary-so-called-beach-islands. It’s more of a magical place, where you say, ‘Oh, this is simply a paradise’.

If this is your first trip to Australia, and you’re deciding which places to keep and skip off the itinerary – then take my advice and  never exclude the Whitsundays . Especially when you’re in Queensland, you’ve got to visit this bunch of tropical islands. Whitsunday bustles with white-sandy beaches, striking turquoise waters, rich flora and fauna, and amazing water sports. From swimming to surfing and kayaking, everything is possible at the Whitsundays.

You just need to be ready for the adventure!

Overview of 7 Days in the Whitsundays

From feeling the purest sands of Whitehaven to snorkelling the beaches of Hamilton, our Whitsundays itinerary explores some of the region’s best attractions and experiences. The intention of curating this trip was to include more discoveries, niche activities and unique tours to help you plan a perfect vacation to the Whitsundays. While a week-long trip sounds fun, it even gets better when you hop-on-hop-off various islands in the Whitsundays.

Ideally, you require a minimum of 4 days to explore the beauty of the Whitsunday Islands.  A four-day trip is more than sufficient to experience what the fuss is all about. However, with a 7-day trip, you get to visit more islands.

If that’s what you prefer, then this trip is for you!

How to Spend 7 Days in the Whitsundays

Day 1: Explore the Airlie Beach Day 2: Stonehaven, Hook Island Day 3: Visit Langford Reef & Butterfly Bay Day 4: Snorkel at Macona Inlet Day 5: Explore Whitsunday Island Day 6: Visit Hamilton Island Day 7: South Molle Island

Whitsunday Islands is not only about exploring its varied islands but also experiencing some great water-based activities . In the later sections of this guide, you’ll find what about the optional tours, day-trips, long excursions, and sailing cruises.

Planning Tips for 7 Days in the Whitsundays

Now that you know what Whitsundays are and why you need to visit them let’s dig deeper into the essential planning tips.

There are plenty of ways to explore the Whitsunday Islands. The first is an  ordinary tour , where you book a certain 4-day or 7-day package. The other is a private journey, where you book a  bareboat sailing trip . With a bareboat itinerary – you get the flexibility & freedom of sailing anywhere across the islands. This is ideally great for families & youth looking to venture Whitsundays on their own. Regardless of your preference, both offer a great visiting experience to the Whitsundays.

The itinerary which I’ve curated below can be perfectly suited for both the exploration ways. But, if you’re choosing the bareboat version, we have some tips for you!

This section explains what a bareboat is, how you need to book them, which ones to choose, and what rental equipment to purchase. All-in-all, if you have doubts about self-touring the Whitsunday Islands, this section will clear out the answers!

What is a Bareboat?

Let’s first understand what a bareboat really is.  It’s nothing but a term used for a vessel that you rent without a crew . For example, when you usually take boat trips around an island, you have a staff accompanying your journey. Be it the sailor or catering team – they are with you on your trip. But, in the bareboat scenario, the vessel belongs to you privately. There won’t be any crew, any staff joining you on this trip. This type of vessel thus gives you the flexibility of sailing your own itinerary at your own pace.

Travel Tip:  You do need some prior experience sailing a bareboat or a private yacht. If you don’t, then there are few options to ride out Power Catamarans. Do check with the tour operator before you make any reservations.

Monohulls Vs Catamarans

Now that you know what a bareboat is let’s consider the options to decide which one is more suitable. I do not have much expertise in this area to guide you on which one is the best; however, I’ll put a differential list between the two popular boats, i.e. Monohulls and Catamarans.

Monohulls  are yachts with a single hull. Since it has only one hull, it makes it difficult to sail against the strong winds. However, given the right conditions at the Whitsundays, Monohulls offers the best sailing experience.

Catamarans , on the other side, have two hulls. Since the stance of the heel area is large, this type of boat slightly less succumbs to strong winds. This type of bareboat is perfect for families travelling with kids.

How to Rent a Bareboat in the Whitsunday Islands?

Bareboating in Whitsundays is a unique experience  and offers you the freedom to create your own sailing path. As fruitful as the experience sounds, finding a good tour operator to book your trip isn’t easy.

I recommend  Charter Yachts Australia  for our Whitsundays itinerary to smoothen your efforts. I don’t have an affiliate relationship with them; rather, I’m suggesting this tour operator based on a few travellers’ experiences. The operator’s service and affordable rates make it simpler for you to book your perfect bareboat adventure.

Get your Rental Equipment Ready

This Whitsunday itinerary for 7 days will be taking you across several different protected bay areas. And, I’m pretty sure you want to try out water adventures during your trip. Thus, I recommend you book your rental pieces of equipment in advance. The first option is to book directly from the cruise operator. The second is to book individual guided activities . I advice you to book certain activities before your trip, as its much cheaper than making reervations last moment.

Detailed Whitsundays Itinerary 7 Days

Day 1: airlie beach.

Airlie Beach in Queensland is a perfect touring base to explore the Whitsunday Islands. During the peak season, Airlie is completely flocked with tourists and can be one of the busiest periods to spend your vacation. However, given that you travel during the shoulder season – Airline Beach is an amazing destination to spend a couple of nights.

Airlie Beach is not only a major tourist attraction but an important site for day-trippers to explore nearby islands. It acts as a gateway to enter the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef. And while it offers an incredible experience for those wanting to explore nearby islands, Airline Beach itself is a place worth exploring.

For our Whitsunday itinerary, I only included a single-night stay at Airlie Beach because I feel one day is more than sufficient to explore what this coastal base has to offer. Furthermore, below are some of the suggestions which you could do on day one itself.

Learn to Sail

Sailing in Whitsundays is a definitive experience , and this is your time to get a perfect hands-on experience sailing a charter. You could start your day at Airlie Beach by getting to know the boat’s mechanics, sailor’s terminologies, and plenty of other things. This way, you get acquainted with all sailing-related tips before your trip starts.

As soon as you arrive at Airlie Beach, you can see plenty of yacht operators offering professional and practical courses. Depending on your preference, you could purchase the plan or simply get a hands-on tour for a few hours.

Relax in the Airlie Beach Lagoon

There’s nothing more peaceful than laying down on a beach, soaking in the tropical vibes of Airlie’s beauty. If relaxation is your key priority, then the  Airline Beach Lagoon  makes it possible. Located right in the centre of the beach, the lagoon has become a popular tourist focal point. With no entry fees, you could literally spend all day relaxing at the lagoon.

With a fusion of man-made and natural attractions, the Airlie Beach Lagoon is one of the most-visited spots in Queensland. It’s ideal for those who want to relax by the beach, either reading a book or sipping a glass of wine.

Day 2: Stonehaven

Hook Island is one of the popular beach islands of Whitsundays. It’s most commonly known for its anchorage spots.

The term ‘ anchorage ‘ basically means an area where you can safely dock your ship, yacht, or charter. These anchorage spots provide safe navigable waterways for your boats to explore nearby areas and places.

For the next three days, you’ll be exploring the reefs and islands of Hook Island. As mentioned earlier, this island is a safe place for boat anchorage – you’ll be having multiple options to dock your bareboat.

The first on the list is the famous Stonehaven . As described by many travelers, Stonehaven was their ‘ favorite ‘ anchorage spot to relax and soak in the charming atmosphere of the Whitsundays. Fringed by extensive reefs, Stonehaven makes a great spot to witness sunsets. Moreover, you can also opt to visit the Stonehaven waterfall, which is probably the only largest waterfall in Whitsunday Islands.

Day 3: Langford Reef & Butterfly Bay

Located near Hayman Island, Langford Reef is one of the magical places to snorkel in the Whitsunday Islands. Although small in size, the island has been well-appreciated for its beauty and exciting water-bound adventures. What I like the most, is that not many people venture off to Langford Reef. So, this could be your perfect spot if you prefer lesser-tourists.

The major highlight of visiting Langford reef is its long sand spit. Despite the heavy tides that smash the coast, the spit has been a favored spot for sunbathing, swimming, and beach-picnicking.

After your relaxation, head to the northern-most portion of Hook Island to explore Butterfly Bay . For a fact, I liked this bay even more than the Langford Reef. Many scuba divers and snorkellers often find Butterfly Bay as their sweet spot to cover the island’s fascinating ecosystem. And I personally found Butterfly Bay to be the best snorkeling site in the Whitsunday Islands .

Day 4: Macona Inlet

Situated to the south of Hook Island, Macona Inlet is also one of Whitsundays popular bay areas, offering great sheltered anchorage. Often so, places like Nara Inlet and Bufferfly Bay tend to be crowded with tourists. So, in such a scenario, Macona Inlet could be a great alternative to dock overnight.

I didn’t find Macona to be a great snorkeling site, however, it’s good if you love kayaking and paddle boarding. Just rent a kayak and wander off to explore the nearby bays of Hook Island.

Day 5: Whitsunday Island

It feels like a dream to explore  Whitsunday Islands  in Queensland. Out of all the isles, Whitsunday is arguably the most beautiful one.

Whitehaven Beach  on Whitsunday is one of the most tranquil beaches on earth. It isn’t only popular in Australia but also competes with the world’s other glistening beaches. Nestled amongst the corals of the Great Barrier Reef, Whitehaven is 7km (4.3mi) long, filled with the purest of white silica sands.

Since the beach is situated within a national park, Whitehaven stands out as the most pristine beach in Australia. The beach and its marine life are well-protected, despite the many day-trippers visiting the shore. To make your exploration at Whitehaven Beach more exciting, I suggest booking a seaplane or a scuba-dive activity to explore the wonders underneath the coast.

Day 6: Hamilton Island

If I can something paradise, then that would probably be  Hamilton Island .

Fringed by bushlands, palm trees, and extensive coastline, Hamilton Island just might be the place for you to witness what ‘luxury’ means. The reason why I call this a luxurious island is because of the fancy resorts that call Hamilton has its home. If that’s what you prefer, then try booking an overnight stay at  qualia  – one that defines the ‘pure luxury’ of Hamilton Island.

Alternatively, you can explore the island’s in-house attractions, including  Hamilton Island wildlife  and  Dent Island . I’d rather suggest a short trip to the Hamilton Island Wildlife first, to discover Australia’s most friendly native animals. From koalas to crocodiles and bird species, you can almost spot them in the great vicinity. Then, if time permits, take a trip to Dent Island. Try a game of golf here, or paddle a kayak down the island’s coral reefs to explore what Hamilton offers.

Day 7: South Molle Island

Surrounded by an oasis of palm trees and white sands, South Molle is a tiny little island located off the coast of Shutte Harbour. There isn’t much to do around, than soaking in the pleasures of your last day at Whitsunday. I would probably give a try to some activities, if you regret missing out on something. Just like the other islands, South Molle does offer great experiential tours for you to explore the best of Whitsunday Islands.

More or less, you could simply spend this day relaxing and cherishing the memorable trip you just had!

This marks the end of your Whitsunday itinerary 7 days.

Whitsunday Islands Day Trip & Excursions

Whitsundays is a paradisiacal place to explore island day trips, beach-walking, snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, and many other activities. If you are keen to discover what more you could do in our Whitsundays itinerary, then I highly recommend checking out these specific tours:

Love rafting? Explore Whitsundays on this epic ocean rafting tour . Want to go aerial? Explore the tropical islands of Whitsunday on this 60-minute scenic flight . Take a half-day trip to Whitehaven beach on this amazing 6-hour cruise .

Hope your enjoyed reading this guide as much as we enjoyed curating it. This 7-day itinerary to Whitsundays explores some of the area’s most unspoiled regions & attractions. As you sail past the islands, you’ll soon realize that there’s more to your adventure. Oh, and if 7 days in the Whitsundays isn’t enough, you can always extend it by spending a couple of nights more.

The Whitsunday Islands Travel Guide

Last Updated: August 25, 2024

aerial view of the Whitsunday Islands, Australia

The Whitsunday Islands are a collection of 74 islands off the central coast of Queensland, Australia . These incredibly stunning islands are one of the most popular destinations in the country.

From backpackers on sailing trips to locals on their own boats to those staying at the luxury resorts that dot the islands, anyone who goes up the east coast of Australia tends to stop here for some rest and relaxation.

Since the vast majority of these islands are designated national parks, you’ll find numerous pristine beaches and dive sites here. The coral reefs provide incredible snorkeling and diving, Whitehaven Beach is everything it’s cracked up to be, and the crystalline waters are perfect for a swim. It’s postcard-perfect here.

I loved my multi-day sailing trip around the Whitsundays and I definitely recommend seeing the islands by boat over staying at one resort.

But, no matter how you plan to visit these islands, this travel guide can help you plan your trip!

Top 5 things to see and do in whitsunday islands.

A diving boat anchored out in the pristine waters of the Whitsunday Islands in Australia

1. Attend Race Week

During August, Hamilton Island’s Race Week kicks off as hundreds of yachts — from 30-foot boats rented for the week to million-dollar super yachts — compete in some serious racing. It’s one of the biggest events of the year and attracts thousands of people. Aside from watching the various races, the festival also includes dinners presented by celebrity chefs, wine tasting, golf tournaments, and more. It’s not your typical budget backpacker event, but it makes for a fun and lively time to visit!

2. Try birdwatching

The islands here are home to many nesting sites and exotic bird species, such as the curlew and the brolga. Keep an eye out for sulfur-crested cockatoos, terns, tattlers, reef egrets, sooty oyster-catchers, and white-bellied sea eagles, one of Australia’s largest raptors, which have a wingspan of up to 2.2 meters (7.2 feet). Fruit bats (also known as flying foxes) are also common around the islands too.

3. Go diving

The islands are known for their diving. Reefs are best viewed during the summertime as the rainy season makes the water murky and visibility gets pretty bad. Here, you’ll be able to spot a wide array of vibrant fish, coral, rays, sea turtles, and more. Dives start at around 150-200 AUD for a two-tank dive.

4. Enjoy Hamilton Island

This is the largest island in the Whitsundays. Often referred to as “Hamo,” if you’re looking to spend some time at a resort, you’ll find a lot of options here. There are lots of spas, trails, and places to go ATVing. Personally, I found it too developed for me but, if you want to splash out on a resort escape, it’s a good choice. Don’t miss the nearby Heart Reef while you’re here (more on it below).

5. See the Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living thing on Earth (it’s actually visible from space). Stretching over 2,300 kilometers (1,429 miles) and composed of almost 3,000 individual reefs, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can take a cruise, swim, snorkel, dive, or book a glass-bottom boat tour to go looking for Nemo. Expect to pay between 250-300 AUD for most excursions. Common wildlife that can be seen here include sharks, manta rays, whales, clown fish, dolphins, giant clams, and more!

Other Things to See and Do in Whitsunday Islands

1. take a resort vacation.

Most resorts offer package deals with sailing trips, spa visits, golfing, arcades, and snorkeling tours. If you aren’t interested in sailing around the island and would rather just stay in one place and take small side trips to the other islands, the resorts are your best bet. Live in luxury for a bit!

2. Fly over Heart Reef

Ever see that famous photo of a reef shaped like a heart? Well, that’s here! While definitely not a budget activity, booking a helicopter tour over the reef is something special and popular with couples visiting on a romantic getaway. An hour-long helicopter ride costs around 700 AUD. An hour-long small plane tour costs about 275 AUD. Most tours will also take you over other sections of the Great Barrier Reef as well.

3. Hike to Passage Peak

There aren’t a whole lot of walking trails in the Whitsundays as it’s mostly a place for water-based activities but, if you want to get some exercise, head to the top of Passage Peak on Hamilton Island. It’s an easy 45-minute trek, and the view at the top of the island chain is perfect. It’s the best hike in the Whitsundays.

4. Sail the islands

Visiting the Whitsundays on a sailboat is one of the best ways to experience the islands. You’ll get to explore a lot of remote places, including some ideal snorkeling spots. Expect to pay between 399-499 AUD per person for a three-day/two-night sailing trip. You can book tours on the mainland from Airlie Beach. OzSail, Redcat Adventures, and The Atlantic Clipper are some of the more popular companies running tours. If you just want to do a day cruise, Cruise Whitsundays offers half-day crusies for 125 AUD.

5. Go camping

If you’re on a budget but still want to enjoy the region’s natural beauty, go camping. Camping permits cost as little as 7 AUD per night. You’ll need to take a water taxi to get to your island/campsite but once you’re there you can enjoy the region for cheap. Expect to pay at least 80 AUD for round-trip service to the islands.

How to Stay Safe in Whitsunday Islands

The Whitsunday Islands are very safe The only dangers here are from the natural environment.

Be sure you have plenty of sunscreen, and stay as hydrated as possible. Bring mosquito repellant. Be on the lookout for snakes and spiders, and if you’re bitten, seek immediate care. Furthermore, if you’re swimming, heed the red and yellow flags. Yellow flags indicate swimming conditions may be dangerous; red flags mean the beach is closed.

October through May is known as “stinger season,” when the box jellyfish and Irukandji jellyfish are plentiful and can deliver a seriously painful sting (or even a potentially fatal one).

The tropical climate here means unexpected storms may pop up, including cyclones. Be sure to check the weather forecast in advance before you do any activities. You do not want to be stranded in a tropical storm!

The national park services also advise against swimming in Cid Harbour as a number of shark attacks have been reported there in recent years.

If you experience an emergency, dial 000 for assistance.

The most important piece of safety advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. You can use the widget below to find the policy right for you:

Where to Stay in Whitsunday Islands

There are no hostels in the Whitsunday Islands. If you want to stay at a resort, here are a few recommendations that aren’t too expensive:

  • Whitsunday Apartments
  • Reef View Hotel

  • Hostel Dorms – 30-60 AUD per night

Whitsunday Islands Suggested Budgets

Backpacker – 50 aud per day.

The cheapest way to see the Whitsundays is by hopping on a sailing trip, which costs around 399-499 AUD for a 3-day/2-night excursion. This covers your transportation from Airlie Beach, food, all sightseeing and activities (like snorkeling), and basically everything you need to have an amazing time in the Whitsunday Islands.

Camping is possible instead, but you need to have all your own gear. If you do camp, you can lower your costs to under 50 AUD per day.

Midrange – 275 AUD Per Day

On a mid-range budget, you can take a ferry from Airlie to Hamilton Island, stay in a cheap hotel or Airbnb, eat some takeaway food or grab meals at local cafes (combined with cooking some of your meals and having picnics), and do some water activities like kayaking, hiking, and snorkeling.

Upscale – 590 AUD Per Day

On a “luxury” budget, you can take a ferry from Airlie to Hamilton Island, stay in a resort, eat out for all your meals (and have a cocktail with dinner), and hire a buggy to get around Hamilton. You can also participate in just about any tour you want: a full-day sailing trip, a flight over the Heart Reef, or even learn how to dive.

At this price point, you can do what you want!

Whitsunday Islands Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

The Whitsunday Islands are definitely not a budget destination. A visit here requires lots of planning and preparation. However, there are some ways to save money in the Whitsunday Islands:

Do a day trip – If staying on the islands is too pricey, stay on the mainland instead and just do a day trip to one of the islands. It won’t be cheap but it will be cheaper than a longer visit or sailing trip!

BYOB – With the exception of day trips on large boats with licensed bars, you can bring your own alcohol on board most boats. To stick to your budget, most travelers bring a box of goon (cheap wine) for the trip.

Stay with a local – Accommodation here can be quite pricey. If you plan ahead, you might be able to find a Couchsurfing host in the Whitsunday Islands (or on the mainland near Airlie Beach before you depart). Just make sure you request a spot well in advance as there are not a lot of hosts.

Camp – If you enjoy being outdoors, there are tons of campgrounds around the islands. It’s the cheapest way to see stay on the islands! However, you’ll need your own boat to get to these sites, and will also have to provide your own food but it will be super cheap!

Bring a water bottle – The tap water in Australia is safe to drink. Bring a reusable water bottle to save money and lower your plastic use. Lifestraw is my favorite as it has a built-in filter to ensure your water is always clean and safe.

How to Get Around in Whitsunday Islands

A plane on the water of the stunning Whitsunday Islands in Australia

Sailing – Sailing is the best way to see the Whitsunday Islands. Sailing trips leave from Airlie beach and usually include meals and activities. You can take longer or shorter tours depending on your budget too. Read about my 3-day sailing trip for more details .

Ferry – Cruise Whitsundays is the main ferry operator running transfers in the Whitsundays, providing transfers between Daydream Island, Hamilton Island, and Airlie Beach (on the mainland). The ferry between Airlie and Hamilton Island costs 60 AUD each way. Airlie to Hamilton Island Airport is the same price. The ferry between Airlie and Daydream Island is 40 AUD. For more ferry prices, see their schedule

Buggy Rental – On Hamilton Island, you can rent buggies to get around. Prices start at 60 AUD for two hours or 98 AUD for 24 hours.

When to Go to Whitsunday Islands

The best time of year to visit the Whitsunday Islands is in September, when there’s near-constant sunshine, very little rainfall, and the temperature reaches highs of 29°C (84°F). The humidity isn’t too high and the water is ideal for watersports (like snorkeling and swimming). A lot of people prefer to do sailing trips during this time as well.

The winter months (from June through August) are also a good time to visit, with comfortable temperatures hovering around 22°C (71°F) each day. However, the water can be quite chilly. If you’re not too keen on spending time in the water, this shouldn’t be a problem.

Australia’s summer months are hot and humid, so most people prefer to avoid the islands during this time. Temperatures are high from December through February, and there is the possibility of cyclones. October through May is also known as “stinger season,” when the box jellyfish and the Irukandji are abundant and can give you a potentially fatal sting.

Whitsunday Islands travel FAQs

When is the best time to visit the whitsundays.

Any time of year is a good time to visit the Whitsundays. As a tropical destination, the archipelago experiences hot, rainy summers and warm, dry winters. Average high temperatures linger between 74°F and 88°F, while lows average a mild 63°F to 77°F. The water temperature averages a pleasant 73°F to 82°F throughout the year.

If you want to go snorkeling or diving, you may be better off planning your trip in the winter (dry) season. Rainfall in the summer tends to come in the form of brief tropical downpours, but it can impact water visibility. Whales can also be spotted in winter from May to October during their annual migration from Antarctica.

If you visit between October and May, AKA stinger season, take extra caution when swimming in the ocean by wearing a stinger suit to protect yourself from possible jellyfish stings.

How to get to the Whitsundays

The Whitsundays can be accessed via one of the coastal towns on the mainland, with the most popular jumping off point being Airlie Beach. There are two main airports in the Whitsundays: Great Barrier Reef Airport located on Hamilton Island, and Whitsunday Coast Airport in Proserpine which is the closest airport to Airlie Beach.

If you fly into Whitsunday Coast Airport, you'll need to drive or take a transfer to Airlie Beach. This is easy to arrange with buses meeting all incoming flights. The transfer from Whitsunday Coast Airport to Airlie Beach takes around 25 minutes.

How do I get around the Whitsundays?

Passenger ferries operate a regular daily service between the mainland and the major Whitsunday islands. You can also do a sailing day tour to explore the archipelago's many highlights.

What should I pack for the Whitsundays?

The Whitsundays tend to be a casual place so you can leave your fancy clothes at home. As a top destination for water-based adventures, swimwear is a must. The same goes for sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat (even in winter) as the sun reflects off the water and white sand. Bring all the essentials, including basic medications, as shops are few and far between on the islands.

Can I use my cell phone in the Whitsundays?

You'll pick up cell phone signal in and around major tourist hubs such as Airlie Beach, but there's limited or no coverage in some parts of the Whitsundays, particularly when you're out at sea or on more remote islands.

What is the internet access like in the Whitsundays?

You'll find wi-fi in bars, cafes and restaurants in major tourist hubs like Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island and Daydream Island. There's limited or no wi-fi available in some parts of the Whitsundays, particularly when you're sailing or exploring more remote islands.

What should I wear in the Whitsundays?

There's no need to get dressed up, even if you're staying at one of the resorts in the Whitsundays. Casual clothes or active wear are fine during the day. Smart casual (think jeans and a t-shirt) is the norm for restaurants at the resorts.

Is it safe to swim in the Whitsundays?

The short answer is yes. That being said, there are some no-swimming zones. You should also listen to local advice and stay alert at all times.

Some of the top things to be aware of when swimming in the Whitsundays include stingers, crocs and sharks.

What You Need To Know Before Purchasing Whitsundays Day Trips

Whitsunday Day Trips are the perfect way to visit the Whitsundays Islands. These day tours are mostly fast-paced boats that maximize your day on the water. Each trip is slightly different, but most tick off the two big wants for any holidaymaker, Whitehaven Beach and snorkelling the coral around the islands. When choosing your Whitsunday Day Trips, there are specific factors that you need to take into consideration.

  • Price Of The Tour  – Pricing is always an essential factor in choosing any tour; you want value for your money. Most trips range from $159 to $250 for an adult and $149 to $199 for a child; there are family packages available on most tours as well. There is an opportunity to pay $159 for an adult with ZigZag Whitsundays, but you will need to book one of the first 12 seats on tour. –
  • What The Tour Includes – This is where some Whitsundays day tours differ from each other .some trips include lunch and a wetsuit in the price, and some have them as optional extras. All tours include a mask and snorkel. Make sure you read what the trip consists of, so you will be prepared for the day. –
  • Departure And Return Times – This is extremely important if you are flying or catching a bus on the same day as the tour. Some tours depart as early as 8 am, while others leave around 10 am. Return times vary between 3.30 pm to 5.30 pm. The return times can vary by 20 minutes depending on the wind and tides that day. –
  • Where Does The Trip Go – The most important answer! Well, once again, it varies… so let us list the most popular place a day trip from Airlie Beach goes. Please note a day trip goes to around 3 locations in a day.

Our Favourite Day Tour Locations In The Whitsundays

  • Hill Inlet Lookout Whitehaven Beach North End at Bettys Beach
  • South Whitehaven Beach, including the new South Whitehaven Beach Lookout
  • Chalkies beach – excellent beach plus snorkel location and lookout platform
  • Langford spit – now has a walking track and lookout
  • Nara inlet – aboriginal rock drawings
  • Boarder island – snorkel location
  • Whitsunday Island – multiple snorkel locations
  • Hook Island – numerous snorkel locations
  • Hayman Island – multiple snorkel locations

One other factor is if you are worried about seasickness, if this is the case choose the fastest boat you can find. The boats like Big Fury and ZigZag Whitsundays have over 1000 horsepower. You will not get seasick in these fast boats, they ride the tops of the waves instead of rocking through them. If you need help or have any questions about Whitsunday Day Trips the contact details for all operators are on their product page
