Accommodation on the Whanganui River

Department of conservation huts and campsites.

There are only Department of Conservation campsites on the Taumarunui to Whakahoro section of the Whanganui River, with the John Coull Hut and Tieke Marae being supplemented by campsites. There is a hut at Whakahoro, but it is sleeping only, with separate cooking shelters outside. John Coull Hut has gas rings to cook on, but canoeists must take their own pots, plates and eating utensils. There is a campsite approximately every two hours after Ohinepane, each having a shelter that serves as a water catcher, and a toilet. Each campsite has storage for about 5000 litres of fresh water that does not need purifying.

It is not possible to freedom camp beside the Whanganui River. DOC hut and campsite bookings must be made before going on the river. It is now possible to book a bed in the DOC huts and at the Tieke Marae.

Posh Pioneers

We highly recommend the accommodation and exclusive experience of Posh Pioneers , located right next to the Maharanui campsite just north of Whakahoro. Posh Pioneers is a unique off the grid boutique accommodation experience hosted by the lovely Heather and Fritz Bonk. A stay here will provide some unforgettable memories

Blue Duck Lodge

You can also book into the private Whio Lodge or Steele’s Shearing Quarters at Blue Duck Station in Whakahoro. Be aware there is quite a hike to bring your gear up from the river at the end of a long day paddling.

Private Campsites

The private Ramanui Campsite opposite Tieke Marae has a 6-bed hut, or campsites. The hut can be booked directly with the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge at 0800 480 308 or by email .

We pass Laceys and Wades landings and several old maori Kaianga. Later in the morning we pass Mangapapa campsite for a possible lunch stop, Man of War Bluff, Kirikiriroa where the river does a huge horseshoe turn, the Verandah, the Whirlpool and on down to Tamatea's Cave and at Ohauora campsite where we will stay for the first night. If we have time and weather on our side there are a couple of stops today for canyon exploring and a swim.

We then paddle past the Mangaio stream and Mangaio rock where several of the early eyebolts can still be seen that were winching points for the riverboats. We did a family 4 day guided canoe trip, it was absolutely amazing. Very professional, our guides Morgan and Aiden were very knowledgeable and friendly. The food was way above expectation and the memories we have made will be with us forever. Highly recommend.

Absolutely amazing experience with Canoe safaris! We did a 4-day canoe trip in the Whanganui river with Canoe safaris. Our guides, Phil and Ian are highly experienced, professional and helpful. Almost everything we need were provided, including tent, 3-meals everyday plus snacks, life jacket,...

A couple of good mates decided we'd do this trip some time ago and Canoe Safari's helped make it happen. Alex, Bailey, Lesley and Canon our guides / hosts were absolutely amazing. Scenery was stunning - seems like little has changed on the landscape in hundreds of years... still...

We were part of a group of 8 friends doing the 3 day trip with Phil and Wai as guides. They were both terrific and very organised. Phil is excellent explaining how to manoeuvre through the rapids and the safety control was first class.

Paddling around: The ins and outs of kayaking at Presque Isle State Park

whanganui canoe trips

Late spring brings kayak season at the peninsula.

Greg Clarke, owner of Presque Isle Boat Rental , has some thoughts about how to make the most out of your voyage.

“The nice thing about paddling down where we’re at, first you don’t have to worry about putting your kayak on your car or trying to unload it and load it again," Clarke said. "We throw everything in for you. We have paddles, we put the kayak in the water for you, help you get in and give you any instruction that you may need and also give you a map to show you some of the area and nature that you might want to see.”

Most of his customers start from the lagoons just past Perry Monument, where the rental business is located.

"Most people will go directly into the lagoons," Clarke said. "A lot will paddle just in the lagoons while others will venture through Graveyard Pond on the way out of the lagoons going into Misery Bay. This is where they will check out the houseboats at Horseshoe Pond. Some people like to take the loop starting at the boat rental going through the lagoons then under a bridge that takes you through marina bay and then into Presque Isle Bay and then loop around Presque Isle and go around Perry Monument into Misery Bay and then back into graveyard back to the boat rental."

The route that Clarke described is equivalent to about a 5½-mile paddle, which means a good workout with a wonderful view of nature.

"Even for novice paddlers, depending on where the wind blows, there’s always somewhere where you are not going to run into waves or anything like that," Clarke said. "It’s very well protected back there so it’s a great place for beginner paddlers."

The hidden gems of the lagoons at Presque Isle

Nature is exactly what kayakers will get when visiting Presque Isle for a kayak trip.

Visitors who come early are likely to observe some hidden wonders, including nests from the lagoons area , birds and other wildlife.

More: Explore Presque Isle waters with a free pontoon boat ride from DCNR. What to know

“The lagoons are awesome, especially paddling in the morning or the evening you’ll see a lot of osprey," Clarke said. "There’s actually five osprey nests down there. There’s a pair of nesting eagles down there. This time of year it’s starting to get tough to see the nests, but in the early Spring and in the Fall you can see the nests from the lagoons area."

Stay safe while kayaking

Although the air temperatures may be warming up, let's not forget that the water temperatures are much different.

Both the Coast Guard and Fish Commission recommend that kayakers always wear a life vest while paddling.

"That’s a big thing I key in on as we always promote wearing a life vest, especially this time of year where the water temperature is cooler," Clarke said. "And you’ll get hypothermia, especially if you are paddling out into the lakes. That’s one of the biggest tips that I can give anybody."

Another safety tip from Clarke is if you feel unsure about the conditions you are getting ready to paddle in, you would be much better off waiting a day for better conditions.

How much does it cost to rent a kayak at Presque Isle?

At Presque Isle Boat Company, renting a single-person kayak which holds up to 280 pounds will cost kayakers $20 for the first hour and $10 for every additional hour. There's a $40 deposit to reserve in advance.

If you want to have some company and rent a two-person kayak, or a tandem kayak, the cost will be $30 for the first hour with $12 for every additional hour. These kayaks can also hold up to 450 pounds and will require a $50 deposit for anyone looking to reserve one ahead of time.

Plan to go fishing? The company offers fishing kayaks that can hold up to 280 pounds. A fishing kayak will cost renters $20 for the first hour with $10 for any additional hours. There's a $50 deposit to reserve in advance.

When to rent kayaks

Kayak season runs from May to October, depending on the weather.

Presque Isle Boat Company is open on weekends from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., then starting on Memorial Day the shop will be open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday to Sunday 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Hours of operation are subject to change depending on the weather.

Could Mexico's Chepe Express be the ultimate slow rail adventure?

Take an epic rail adventure into the Copper Canyon for river kayaking, zip-lining and opportunities to learn from remote Indigenous Rarámuri communities.

Travelling 220 miles through northwestern Mexico from the coastal city of Los Mochis in Sinaloa to the mountain town of Creel in Chihuahua, the Chepe Express is one of Mexico’s few long-distance passenger trains –– and an epic one at that. The train travels through ravines, deserts, gorges and rivers, via 37 bridges and 86 tunnels, to reach the Copper Canyon, a chain of six UNESCO-protected rocky canyons in the Sierra Madre Occidental. Often referred to as the Sierra Tarahumara because of the Indigenous communities that live here, combined they form a gorge that’s four times larger than the Grand Canyon in the US.

The Chepe Express has six modern passenger cars divided into three classes: First Class has panoramic windows, reclining seats and one on-board meal included in the train’s Urike restaurant, which serves traditional dishes from the states of Chihuahua and Sinaloa; Executive Class has spacious seating and access to its own bar; and Tourist Class includes basic, but comfortable upright seating and an on-board snack service.

The journey, which takes nine hours to complete, can be done in a day. However, a hop-on, hop-off ticket allows passengers to explore the Copper Canyon’s towns and sights at a slower pace, staying in hotels or Airbnbs along the route. Highlights include visiting vineyards and waterfalls around the 17 th -century Jesuit town of Cerocahui, located on the edge of the Copper Canyon’s deepest gorge, Barranca de Urique; riding the world’s second-longest zip-line at the Copper Canyon Adventure Park near Divisadero train station, where the mighty Urique and Tararecua rivers converge; and kayaking along the forested Fuerte River.

But perhaps the most singular experience in the Copper Canyon is spending time with the Rarámuri, an Indigenous group that’s lived in the state of Chihuahua for nearly 2,000 years. The arrival of the Spanish in the 16 th century pushed the Rarámuri –– also known as Tarahumara, the name given to them by the Spanish 400 years ago –– into the most remote parts of the Copper Canyon.

Today, the Rarámuri, which loosely translates to ‘runners on foot’ in the Rarámuri language, are best known for their ultra-running abilities, demonstrated in international races and local games like palillo , which involves carrying and throwing a ball over the Copper Canyon’s deep gorges and ravines for several days –– and several hundred miles –– on foot. But running isn’t the Rarámuri’s only skill: cooking with healthy ingredients like blue corn and weaving baskets from natural fibres are just some of the things you can learn while exploring this remote part of northwestern Mexico with them.

Three must-do Rarámuri experiences in the Copper Canyon

1.   Huetosachi cooking & weaving class

In the small Rarámuri village of Huetosachi, 60 miles north of Divisadero station (the penultimate stop on the Chepe Express), the women offer traditional cooking and weaving classes in their homes. First, you’ll learn how to make pinole   –– an ancient drink made with ground corn that Rarámuri runners use to fuel their ultra-marathons –– and tortillas made with blue corn, also favoured by Rarámuri runners for the bread’s high-protein content and anti-inflammatory properties. Then comes the delicate art of basket weaving using the leaves of the yucca plant, which grows wild across the Americas, or sotol, a plant native to the Chihuahuan desert.

2.   The Giants Trail

The Copper Canyon’s rocky cliffs and deep ravines mean that, even today, numerous parts of it can only be accessed on foot. Generations of Rarámuri runners have carved hundreds of trails into the canyon, many of which carry their own legends. Take a guided hike of the three-hour Giants Trail, led by Rarámuri runners from the Bacajipare community, to learn about Los Ganoko –– mischievous giants that are said to roam the canyon near the Urique River. Additional one-hour hikes to nearby rock paintings and Rarámuri cave tombs can also be organised in Bacajipare.

3.   Museo Tarahumara de Arte Popular

Located in Creel’s old train station, the Museo Tarahumara de Arte Popular traces the history and culture of the Rarámuri people from the beginning of Rarámuri life in Chihuahua 2,000 years ago through to the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century and up to the present day. The permanent exhibition includes displays of Rarámuri art and textiles, cultural celebrations and religious ceremonies, as well as a collection of 62 photos by French photographer Gérard Tournebize, who lived with and documented the lives of Rarámuri people in the Copper Canyon from 1989 to 1991. Attached to the museum is Casa de las Artesanías, a shop selling traditional Rarámuri arts and crafts.
