weekend trip movie

Now streaming on:

A woman's body floats face down in dark waters as somber cello music swells. One quick title and dissolve later and the water, sans body, is now bright and inviting. The camera pans over a picturesque coastal Croatian town. Everything is sunshine and palm trees as bright-eyed new mom Beth ( Leighton Meester ) makes her way by taxi to a girls weekend away with best friend Kate ( Christina Wolfe ).

In free fall after the dissolution of her marriage, the whole trip is on Kate's, including the lushest AirBnB, raw oysters, and copious amounts of alcohol. They’ve been best friends since Beth’s semester abroad in England, during which Kate introduced Beth to her now husband Rob ( Luke Norris ). The women have drifted a bit since the birth of Beth’s daughter Aster. By the end of Beth and Kate’s weekend, one of them will be dead.

Written by Sarah Alderson from her own novel and directed by Kim Farrant , the new Netflix thriller “The Weekend Away” is cut from the same cloth as those great cheesy '90s thrillers like “ Double Jeopardy ” where the plot has more twists than the serpentine roads Beth’s taxi takes to get to her AirBnB. But that’s okay. The pleasure of a thriller like this is to get lost in its locales and caught up in the web it spins.

Farrant and cinematographer Noah Greenberg capture the alluring sunny beauty of Split, Croatia with fluid camera movements. Pink sunsets contrast against ancient stone buildings. The filmmakers frame the actors like classic postcards or vacation photos, the cityscape always in the distance behind them. Even during the film’s darker twists, the tourist vibes remain as if the whole movie were told through a slide show recapping the most disastrous getaway ever.

Opposites in both temperament and style, introverted Beth has frazzled hair and no makeup, opting for sage green crochet dress for their big night out; extroverted Kate, on the other hand, dons bright red lips and teal sequins. Meester is excellent at mixing in new mom exhaustion with the excitement she clearly feels being reunited with Kate. Meanwhile Wolfe buzzes through her brief appearance, high on god knows what and ready to paint the town red.

Their “one night of excitement” to get Beth out of her rut starts at a smoky neon lit bar where they meet a couple of handsome men, and ends with Kate missing. Unfortunately, the opening shot deflates much of the tension here as we know Kate’s fate long before Beth does. What makes this part of the film work however is the chemistry between Beth and Zain (a soulful Ziad Bakri ), a cab driver and Syrian refugee who helps her retrace the night. Does this all make logical sense? No, not really. But Bakri imbues his character with such a rich interiority and personal code of ethics that you almost buy what the movie is selling.

Films like this live and die on the commitment of their lead performance and whether the audience roots for her to get out of this mess. Meester has always had an incredibly likable screen presence and the movie wisely sticks to her point of view throughout, anchoring the audience's investment in her. In the more emotional sequences, Farrant does not shy away from a classic close-up, allowing Meester to showcase her expressive eyes.

Beyond the enjoyable shock factor of the twists—I yelled out “What?!” more than once—the film explores the idea of trust. Beth trusts Kate, even when she gets her to do things outside her comfort zone. That’s the basis of their friendship. Beth trusts Zain. “The heart is your guide,” he tells her in Arabic when the police try to make her doubt this trust. Beth trusts her own instincts, even when the police, Kate’s estranged husband Jay ( Parth Thakerar ), and even her own husband Rob try to get her to doubt what she knows to be true about her best friend. Although some of the weight of what the film wants to say about gaslighting is undone by the ridiculous plotting, Meester and Bakri’s grounded performances keep the story rooted.

“The Weekend Away” is the best kind of purposely preposterous potboiler. The scenery is gorgeous, the twists keep the adrenaline pumping, and the performances are memorable. Even though you might not remember everything that happens, you’ll have a good time while it lasts.

Warning: This article contains major The Weekend Away spoilers. Like, pretty much every spoiler.

After you watch The Weekend Away on Netflix, you may think twice before booking that weekend trip with your bestie. Because this new thriller—which began streaming on Netflix today—finds Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester trapped in a weekend getaway trip from hell.

Based on the novel by Sarah Alderson, and directed by Kim Farrant, The Weekend Away will pull you in right away. From the get-go, you won’t trust any of the characters that you meet—except for Leighton Meester, of course. Blair Waldorf would never betray us. But other than that, after one of the two besties on this trip goes missing, everyone is a suspect.

The Weekend Away is a mystery that will keep you guessing until the very end, with plenty of twists and turns along the way—including one big twist that comes at the very end of the movie. If you weren’t paying close attention and got confused, or if you simply want to read about the movie before you watch it on Netflix, then Decider is here to help. Read on for The Weekend Away plot summary and The Weekend Away ending explained.

WHAT IS THE WEEKEND AWAY PLOT SUMMARY?

Beth (Leighton Meester) and her BFF Kate (Christina Wolfe) embark on a weekend vacation in Croatia, in order to help Kate get over her break-up with her ex-boyfriend. The best part? Kate still has access to her ex’s credit card, so the vacation is on him—at least until he figures out what Kate is doing.

Kate encourages Beth to have a wild weekend with her, though Beth would rather FaceTime her husband Rob (Luke Norris) and new baby at home. Trying to be a good friend, Beth agrees to go out to a club with Kate. Kate buys Beth a drink (even though Kate asks for water), and tries to convince her to cheat on her husband with two guys that they meet at the club. The last thing Beth remembers is Kate asking the two men to come back to their place.

The next morning, Beth wakes up with a terrible hangover and a fuzzy memory of arguing with Kate. But Kate is nowhere to be found in the Airbnb, and she’s not answering her phone. Beth reaches out to the taxi driver, Zain (Ziad Bakri) who drove her and Kate to the bar, and, with Zain’s help, she learns that the men she and Kate were with the previous night are prostitutes.

Beth goes to the police, but the police officer, Pavic (Amar Bukvic) doesn’t take her seriously. The next morning, Beth still hasn’t heard from Kate. The cab driver Zain gets the male escorts to confess that they stole Beth and Kate’s bag, but they insist they did not hurt her. Beth gets Kate’s phone back and sees that Kate has missed calls, but she is not able to unlock her phone. Beth’s husband Rob unexpectedly shows up in Croatia, to offer his emotional support to Beth. Shortly after he arrives, the police find Kate’s dead body in the water.

Rob goes back home to London, and Beth gets the police to bring her to Kate’s body, where she is able to unlock Kate’s phone. Beth sees via Kate’s text messages that she was having an affair with Beth’s husband, Rob, who is listed on her phone as “HANDYMAN.” Meanwhile, Beth has become a suspect in Kate’s death—especially when the police find out about the affair. Beth isn’t sure how the police found out about the affair… until she realizes the landlord at her Airbnb is spying on her. After she finds a hidden camera in her room, she steals her landlord’s keys and unlocks the mysterious locked room. Inside, she finds footage of everyone who stays at the Airbnb, including footage of the night Kate went missing. Beth sees that Kate came back to the Airbnb, upset, after being dropped off by a car. She notes the car’s license plate.

After an altercation with her Airbnb host, Beth enlists Zain to help her figure out where Kate went that night. According to Kate’s cab driver, he took Kate to the police station, where she filed a report about the male escorts who stole her bag. Beth can’t understand why the police wouldn’t tell her about this when she first reported Kate missing. Then the police show up, and Beth sees that Officer Pavic has the same car that she saw drop off Kate on the Airbnb footage. She concludes that Pavic is the one who killed Kate, and she runs.

WHAT IS THE WEEKEND AWAY ENDING EXPLAINED?

Pavic corners Beth on a rooftop. Beth accuses him of killing Kate, he says that Kate was a slut, and then physically attacks Beth. The two struggle, and then Pavic loses his footing and falls to his death. The other police officer witnesses this go down and formally apologizes to Beth for not believing her. The police find the footage that confirms Pavic drove Kate home. They also find footage that shows a man hitting Kate on the boardwalk, before shoving her into the water. The police assume that Kate rejected Pavic’s advances, that he took it badly, and killed her. Apparently, he had been accused of sexual misconduct in the past, but the charges were later dropped against him. Having been cleared of all charges, Beth goes back to her life in London. It’s all over… or is it?

Beth is now separated from her husband Rob, and in the film’s final scene, she drops off her baby at his apartment. He asks her to stay for tea, but she declines. However, when she goes to retrieve her car keys from Rob’s coat pocket, she finds a bead from a necklace that she gave Kate on the Croatia trip. She realizes the only way Rob could have that bead is if he saw Kate while they were in Croatia. Plot twist alert: Pavic didn’t kill Kate. It was the husband!

Beth excuses herself to Rob’s bathroom and calls the Croatian policewoman who closed her case. She tells the officer that Pavic didn’t kill Kate, but before she can say more, Rob knocks on the bathroom door to check on her. Beth leaves her phone on while she has a conversation with Rob, and accuses him of killing Kate. Rob confesses and says it was an accident. He showed up in Croatia because Kate had been threatening to tell Beth about the affair, and wasn’t taking Rob’s calls. They got into an argument on the boardwalk, and Rob hit Kate, accidentally knocking her into the river where she slammed her head on a rock. Rob says he assumed she was dead, but we see in a flashback that Rob saw she was struggling in the water.

Beth realizes that the entire weekend away wasn’t about Kate getting over a break-up, it was about Kate trying to help Beth realize who she was without Rob. Beth reveals that she has been on the phone with the police during Rob’s confession. He moves to attack her, but she overpowers him and escapes with her baby. In the film’s final shot, we see Beth walking through the park with her baby, finally free.

Phew. What a twist! But anyone who has seen an episode of Dateline shouldn’t be surprised—it’s always the husband.

"The Weekend Away" Is One Twist After Another — Let's Discuss the Ending

THE WEEKEND AWAY, from left: Christina Wolfe, Leighton Meester, 2022. ph: Ivan Sardi / Netflix / Courtesy Everett Collection

"The Weekend Away" on Netflix keeps you guessing the whole way through. The Netflix thriller is about two best friends who take a weekend trip to Croatia, but things go awry when one of them turns up murdered . The movie will have you questioning every character as you try to figure out who is guilty of murder. In the end, it comes down to a twist, because of course it does. If you want to skip to the end to find out what happens — whether you plan to watch the movie or not — here's everything you need to know.

How Does "The Weekend Away" Start?

Beth (Leighton Meester) just had a baby with her husband, Rob (Luke Norris), and her relationship with her best friend Kate (Christina Wolfe) has sorta fallen to the wayside. They decide to take a girls' trip to Croatia for the weekend and have some fun. They start the party at the apartment they've rented and then move the festivities to a club. While there, Beth makes it clear she doesn't want to drink anymore, but Kate tries to get her to live a little. They meet up with two men, and while Beth is reluctant to spend time with them, Kate insists. For Beth, it's all a blur from there until she wakes up the next morning and finds that Kate has disappeared.

Who Are the Suspects in "The Weekend Away"?

What "The Weekend Away" does well is it quite literally makes every person in the movie a suspect.

  • First, we have the two men in the club. We learn that they're escorts who drug women and rob them. Beth and Kate brought them back to their apartment for a nightcap, so they'd be easy to pin Kate's disappearance on.
  • There's Zain (Ziad Bakri), the taxi driver. He first brings Beth to the apartment and gives her his card in case she needs a taxi at any point. He's also the one to take Beth and Kate to the club. During this ride, Beth learns Zain is from Syria and left to escape the war. Beth trusts him immediately, which may not be wise. He continues to help Beth search for Kate after she goes missing, and the police try to pin him down as a suspect.
  • We also have Rob, Beth's husband. Though she calls him from Croatia to talk to him and their baby, he's immediately cold with Kate. You quickly pick up on some bad blood between them, though it's not clear what could be the cause of it beyond Kate needling Beth to choose a happier life (aka, one without Rob).
  • Kate is also recently split from her husband, Jay (Parth Thakerar), who doesn't seem to care that she's turned up missing. He also denies having contact with her since she's come to Croatia, despite what she told Beth. Jay is under the impression that Kate probably just skipped town to punish Beth for being a bad friend.
  • And let's not forget Pavic (Amar Bukvic), the cop. When Beth goes to file a missing persons report, he writes her off as a drunk, drugged-up tourist and doesn't even file a report. In fact, he pretty much laughs her right out of the station.
  • Lastly, we have Sebastian (Adrian Pezdirc), the landlord of the apartment Beth and Kate are staying in. He's just a bit creepy, and it turns out he has cameras in all his apartments to spy on guests. Though he tells Beth that it's for security purposes, it seems way too skeevy to be just that.

So who did it?

THE WEEKEND AWAY, from left: Luke Norris, Leighton Meester, 2022. ph: Ivan Sardi / Netflix / Courtesy Everett Collection

What Happened the Night Kate Went Missing in "The Weekend Away"?

Thanks to Sebastian's hidden cameras in the apartments, Beth finds that the two escorts did, in fact, come back to their apartment. They put Beth in bed because she'd passed out and then had some fun with Kate. But when Kate goes to shower, the two steal her things and leave. She chases after them, hailing a cab to follow them. But when she loses them in the street, she has the cab driver take her to the police station to file a report. While there, she meets Pavic, who conveniently didn't take down her report and never told his partner or Beth that he'd seen her. Sometime after this, Kate ends up dead in the water, only to be found a couple days later.

Beth figures the sequence of events out and accuses Pavic of hitting on Kate and then killing her when she rejected him. But before anyone can get a confession out of him, he falls to his death. After chasing Beth and attacking her, he trips on a rock and falls as she's screaming at him for killing her friend. It's then assumed that he's the murderer.

"The Weekend Away"'s Twist, Explained

Beth returns home to London after being cleared as a suspect herself. But this is when things get interesting. When Beth gets Kate's belongings back, she tries to break into her phone to see if there are any clues about her whereabouts. Alas, the phone is Face ID protected. But when Kate's body turns up, Beth takes the opportunity to go to the morgue and use the body to open the phone and turn off Face ID. She sees dozens of missed calls from "Handyman." Beth dials the number, and, lo and behold, it's Rob. She flips over to the texts and shockingly finds that Rob and Kate had been having an affair, and Jay knew about it.

Beth tells Rob she knows about it, and he tries to blame her. He tells her that they hadn't been intimate in so long between the baby and Beth being depressed. He also claims it meant nothing. So naturally, after what happened in Croatia, Beth breaks things off.

So now we're at the end of the story, and Beth is bringing the baby to Rob before meeting up with Zain (a good guy all along!) when she finds a bead from Kate's necklace in Rob's coat pocket. She calls the police in Croatia before confronting Rob.

Who Murdered Kate in "The Weekend Away" and Why?

After Kate went to the police station, Pavic brought her back to the apartment and left. But Rob turns up to confront her about the affair. He wants to make sure she hasn't told Beth about them. Kate storms off to the waterfront, and the two get into an argument. Though in the present time, Rob tells Beth Kate was in love with him, the flashback to the night shows that Kate was actually telling Rob it was all a mistake and that she wants to be rid of him (and wants Beth to be too). He gets mad and pushes her, breaking her beaded necklace (which is how he ends up with one in his pocket). She falls and hits her head on a rock, and tumbles into the water. Rather than save her, he leaves, and she drowns.

Flashback to the present time, Beth flees the house with the baby as the police cars come screeching in to arrest Rob, Kate's real killer.

Now that was a roller-coaster ride!

Movie Review – The Weekend Away (2022)

March 3, 2022 by Robert Kojder

The Weekend Away ,  2022.

Directed by Kim Farrant. Starring Leighton Meester, Christina Wolfe, Ziad Bakri, Luke Norris, Amar Bukvić, Iva Mihalić, Adrian Pezdirc, and Parth Thakerar.

A weekend getaway to Croatia goes awry when a woman is accused of killing her best friend. As she attempts to clear her name and uncover the truth, her efforts unearth a painful secret.

For roughly an hour of Kim Farrant’s The Weekend Away (and Sarah Alderman writing a script treatment based on her novel), there is an effort to keep the disappearance at the center of the story somewhat grounded in believability. It also feels as if the filmmakers are actively trying to avoid going down the route of stupidity that most trashy thrillers find themselves on. As a result, there is some measure of worth and entertainment value here (especially considering this is a Netflix drop that is all but guaranteed to be watched by anyone scrolling the What’s New section at midnight on a Saturday) in its simplistic storytelling and brisk running time. This year alone has been far worse thrillers released on streaming services. With that in mind, it’s easy to recommend The Weekend Away to anyone curious that might be looking to pass some time.

However, that doesn’t mean The Weekend Away is necessarily good. The story follows a new mother, Beth (Leighton Meester, turning in a decent performance aside from whenever the script demands her to play shocked). She takes a well-earned vacation to Croatia with her longtime best friend, Kate (Christina Wolfe). The relative closeness from London makes it an ideal relaxation choice should anything come up requiring Beth to return home to her daughter and partner Rob (Luke Norris). Kate is not just looking to unwind, though, as she takes Beth out for a night of partying and drinks that starts normal enough but quickly turns into Kate encouraging Beth to hook up with a stranger and cheated on Rob after expressing that the relationship, while fine, has also become sexually distant. Already, Kate is immensely unlikable and comes across like the worst friend ever.

Cue a brief argument and drunken blackout similar to The Hangover with Beth awakening to find a bloodstain on the floor inside their high-end air B&B with Kate missing. There are also several suspicious characters at play here, ranging from a taxi driver (Ziad Bakri) with much interest in driving around and assisting Beth in her investigation. And she needs that support because the local police appear supremely shady. Also in the mix is an overly creepy air B&B owner. And once Rob realizes that Kate is not faking the disappearance or attention (one of the few solid emotional scenes in the movie, as there is a sense that the character goes from regretting his accusations that it’s a cry for attention), he gets a babysitter and flies into Croatia.

One of the more intriguing aspects is that both the film and Beth are aware that she trusts too easily. On more than one occasion, a character openly questions why she doesn’t assume he is involved. It allows The Weekend Away to at least attempt to say something noteworthy about the line between trust and listening to one’s heart. Also, as details are revealed about the disappearance, there are a few on-the-nose bits regarding slut-shaming and the childish bitterness of a rejected man.

The issue is that, unfortunately, The Weekend Away does devolve into a series of goofy twists and contrived events that continuously undercut the messages the story is getting at. Every suspect is also played over the top, leaving little room for nuance, especially when characters start making drastic decisions that lack logic and purpose to such a degree it becomes apparent they are involved. Still, there is mild forward momentum and suspense, which can’t be said for the terribly executed final 20 minutes. What should have been woven into the third act becomes a lengthy epilogue that only exists to try pulling the rug out from underneath the viewer one more time. And I say try because it’s hard to imagine anyone watching the entire movie not suspecting this person has something to do with the disappearance.

If nothing else, The Weekend Away is a good excuse to turn off your brain for 90 minutes and enjoy a familiar vacation mystery with serious made-for-TV vibes. For better or worse, it is the definition of a Netflix movie.

‘The Weekend Away’ Review: A Croatian Vacay Turns Hazardous

Leighton Meester finds danger abroad in this diverting if excessively twist-laden Netflix thriller.

The Weekend Away

Current B-grade thrillers so frequently have too little plot — often not much more than a starting premise — that it’s almost refreshing to see something like “The Weekend Away,” which has many more narrative complications than it can pull off. Certainly not with sufficient credibility, suspense or atmosphere, and not in one hectic hour and a half. Nonetheless, this Netflix original plunging Leighton Meester into peril on a Croatian holiday is fast-moving enough to provide a decent night’s disposable home entertainment for viewers whose expectations aren’t geared any higher.

Director Kim Farrant ’s last two features (2015’s “Strangerland,” 2019’s “Angel of Mine”) both involved suspicions cast on unstable adults over missing children. Whereas in “Weekend’s” missing person scenario, our protagonist is pretty much the sole character who doesn’t end up looking guilty of something or other. London-based American Beth (Meester) arrives in Split for a long-planned getaway with old pal Kate (Christina Wolfe), who has arranged rather luxurious digs for them — gloating that the husband she’s just divorced will foot the bill. While Beth’s own marriage to Rob (Luke Norris) is apparently undergoing a “rough patch,” she is nonetheless dedicated to their baby and to domesticity, taking this break only at her free-spirited erstwhile college roomie’s insistence.

Though disinclined to party-hearty, she reluctantly acquiesces when Kate’s “one night of excitement … [to] bring you out of your rut” turns into clubbing with two random guys, then waking up the next morning with a brutal hangover and little memory of the prior evening. This is problematic, because Kate is now nowhere to be found. Despite her history of flaky, impulsive behavior, such absence is worrying enough that Beth soon alerts the local police (Amar Bukvic, Iva Mihalic). They are dismissive; considerably more helpful is a Syrian-refugee taxi driver (Ziad Bakri) Beth has already befriended. Their sleuthing around only raises worse fears that get realized when Kate’s corpse is found — unsurprisingly, since the film opened with a flash-forward shot of her body floating in the Adriatic.

Popular on Variety

Our heroine’s distress is exacerbated further once she realizes the authorities regard her as a suspect in her friend’s murder. There’s no lack of other potential perps, either, ranging from the club-pickup gigolos (Marko Braic, Lujo Kuncevic) to the rental flat’s creepy landlord (Adrian Pezdirc). Even those investigating cops and Kate’s own husband start looking pretty shady, as fragmentary memories of the fateful evening return to her, and intel withheld by various parties is revealed.

Ultimately there are a few twists too many, pushing the story into a realm of excess contrivance. There’s not enough time or nuance to lend numerous narrative turnabouts plausibility. And despite the decent performances, we can’t quite buy into Beth’s primary relationships here: As played by Meester, she’s such a vanilla “all-American girl,” it doesn’t make sense she’d be besties with wild-child Kate, let alone have a long-term spouse concealing dark secrets. Presumably these dynamics played better in scenarist Sarah Alderson’s original novel (which is set in Lisbon rather than Split). But in the film’s brisk screen progress, the pileup of left-field plot developments soon becomes overkill.

To Farrant’s credit, that surplus melodrama somehow stops short of camp. The film is just nimble and poker-faced enough to skirt unintentional humor, even after we stop finding it remotely convincing. On the other hand, the director doesn’t demonstrate much feel for overall tension or physical action. Deprived the more complicated psychological dimensions of her prior thrillers to lean on, “Away” requires a more mysterious, threatening mood than she seems interested in summoning. Historic seaside Split looks like a scrubbed, sunny tourist’s delight here—not a place where one might fall into a pit of intrigue and possibly never get out alive.

For all its increasingly-expansive credibility gaps and other flaws, however, the movie does provide a slick, pacey diversion. Rather like the kind of airport-bookstore potboiler it’s duly based on, “The Weekend Away” holds attention sufficient to pass the time. There are no aspirations evident toward anything memorable, despite the vaguely Hitchcockian tenor. Taken as the audiovisual equivalent of a beach read, it’s fun — certainly a notch or two above the level of such other recent Netflix woman-in-peril pulp fictions as “The Intrusion” or “Brazen.”

The Weekend Away Review: A Girls' Trip Gone Wrong

Leighton Meester stars in The Weekend Away as Beth, a woman whose best friend disappears on a vacation together.

The vacation movie has dramatized the iconic notion of a girls’ trip, the opportunity to get away from a drab, mundane life and explore some new location. Often it is a tropical place, or at least somewhere a lot warmer than New York City in the winter. From movies like Girls Trip to Spring Breakers , romantic comedy and crime territory has been covered by the overarching theme. But what happens when someone goes missing on a trip? This question is the answer that Australian director Kim Farrant sought to find in the Netflix original thriller The Weekend Away .

The Weekend Away is based on the thriller novel by Sarah Alderson of the same name. The novel was inspired by an innocent trip Alderson took to Lisbon, Portugal, with a best friend. Although that trip did not have any deadly consequences, The Weekend Away does. It meditated on concepts of female friendships , especially in one’s twenties and thirties, and how many people do not know what they are doing at that age.

Leighton Meester , best known for her performances on The CW’s Gossip Girl and ABC’s Single Parents , returns to the big screen after three years. She stars as Beth, the movie’s protagonist. Beth’s best friend, Kate, is portrayed by actress Christina Wolfe, who previously appeared in Batwoman . The remainder of the small cast consists of actors Luke Norris, Ziad Bakri, and Amar Bukvic. The movie, however, begins and ends with Beth and Kate.

The two consider themselves best friends , and they met when Beth studied abroad in England for a semester. They both now live in England, although Beth is an American. Kate had introduced Beth to Rob (Luke Norris), with whom she has a daughter and is now married to him. That marriage does not seem to be thriving, though, judging from the detached way they communicate with each other. Kate and Beth have been slowly drifting away in the time that Beth had her daughter, but when Kate’s marriage comes apart at the seams, the two decide to get away together and travel to Croatia. They expect this to be a trip of indulgence, something where Kate can help feel better about life and rediscover her purpose.

A Best Friend Disappears

What ends up happening is the exact opposite: Kate is found dead in the water. The film hides nothing, showing Kate’s body floating in the water as the opening shot. Almost immediately, it is established that something is going to be wrong on this getaway, and the viewer, along with the characters in the movie, is going to have to put together the pieces of what actually happened here. It also sets the expectation that darkness lingers underneath a bright and sunny town shown in the next shot.

And perhaps revealing this fact so soon can be a double-edged sword for the movie. It quickly establishes what is to come and what the film is going to be about, but at the same time, it vastly lowers the stakes. Kate disappears during a night out in the town, leaving Beth in a panic when she realizes that Kate never returned to their luxurious hotel room that night. But because the viewer already knows what most likely has happened, the tension that could have been teased out of this event is nonexistent.

Kate is everything that Beth is not; she is bold and outgoing, someone willing to drag Beth away for a new adventure. As Kate slyly suggests swimming naked after Beth says she may have forgotten her swimsuit, Beth looks unamused, shyly looking to the side. In the time Kate is alive, her vibrancy fills up the screen. While Beth wears a toned-down shade of light blue for their night out, Kate goes all out and wears sparkly number fit for the club alongside bright red lipstick and high heels. She even says to Beth that Beth needs to get out of her rut and explore her sexuality. And perhaps this is understandable; her marriage has just ended, and she desires to live her life freely.

But here is how the story goes: Beth does not drink that night, nor does she recall doing anything out of the sort. However, she blacks out and wakes up the next morning throwing up. Kate is noticeably absent from the screen. This is pretty relatable, something expected on a normal vacation and girls’ trip. You are going to have more drinks than necessary when trying to escape regular life, and one gets drunk to the point of blacking out, and the other, who keeps insisting on having sex, is not home when the other girl wakes up.

Who Did It?

As Beth’s anxiety about Kate not coming home increases, one surprising standout character is Zain (Ziad Bakri), a Syrian taxi driver first seen dropping Beth off at her hotel. At times, he seems to be the only taxi driver in town due to the frequency he appears and is called upon, but he shows Beth compassion in her initial search for Kate and helps look for her. He is reluctant, however, to have his name included in a police report due to the potential of his visa getting revoked. Croatia has a history of accepting refugees from countries in political strife.

There is quite a bit of gaslighting going on at this moment, as Beth’s husband and even the male police officer wave off her concerns. “[Kate] has gone off with a guy and her friend is upset,” the male police officer laughs to a companion in Croatian as Beth sits anxiously in front of them. The report is never filed, and when she returns the next day, a female police officer chides the man for not doing his job properly.

This is a distinct double standard that overtly clouds the beginning of this movie; because Kate is seen as promiscuous and a party girl, men see her as unworthy of being looked for. The problem is instead waved off and pushed back because there is an assumption she will just wander home drunk. Maybe if the roles were reversed and Beth was missing, an alarm would have sounded. The tragedy to occur is distinctly clouded in a veil of blatant sexism.

The Weekend Away does not try to reinvent the plot point where someone mysteriously goes missing, and those who knew them are scrambling to find answers. Its location is not the typical tropical backdrop one would expect an average girls’ trip to go and celebrate their newfound freedom. Instead, the protagonists venture to scenic Croatia in a coastal town, which provides the perfect moody and quiet atmosphere with its old-world European-style charm and mountains looming in the distance.

And perhaps it is The Weekend Away ’s strict adherence to the genre that marks its downfall. The movie fails to break free from the conventional tropes and dynamics created in films where someone goes missing, and it drags on the concept of whodunit for as long as it possibly can. Ridden and layered with twists, each character becomes a suspect in this case. Whether it escorts that Kate may or may not have hired the night of her disappearance, or the unsettling landlord found rifling through their possessions, suspicion is at every corner.

A Thriller Movie Reminiscent of the 90s

Leighton Meester as Beth provides a nuanced performance full of close-ups as she dutifully navigates what could have happened that night. Even as the surrounding people insist that she does not know the truth, that Kate will show up okay, she insists that she knows something has gone wrong. The viewers know that her hunch is right, of course, thus demonstrating the nature of their bond and relationship.

Beth, however, is quite a shaky character. As her distrust and paranoia only continue to grow, she lacks any sort of story outside her friend’s disappearance. She lacks a particular growth in her narrative arc that is truly satisfying. While she does eventually uncover the truth behind what has happened, she is still the same Beth introduced at the beginning of the film, except now she is more jaded and hardened by the world. Perhaps that is why she finds solace in Zain, who has left behind a life in Syria due to war and experienced death like Beth.

The Weekend Away has a runtime of ninety minutes, but within that brief period, a lot is packed in there. Underlying social commentary scrapes the surface of experiences of new mothers and immigrants like Zain, but these are smothered under the main plot, and it is how it continues to twist. At times the movie itself can be quite predictable, and the stakes are too low, but it keeps the story fresh by introducing a new twist every five or ten minutes. Reminiscent of nineties films, it provides a solid Friday night movie but fails to deliver something new and exciting in the genre.

It's the dark thriller that's just dropped on Netflix . And audiences want to know where The Weekend Away was filmed in real-life.

Stunning architecture, sandy beaches and sunny skies will attract viewers to new Netflix film The Weekend Away . But whilst the setting is bright, the movie's plot and undertone is anything but - as it tells the story of a disappearance and murder during an otherwise regular girls trip abroad. Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester heads up the cast, starring in scenes that many will recognise as a rather popular holiday destination.

The mystery film is already becoming another talked about Netflix hit, following the popular Anna Delvey series, Tinder Swindler   documentary and addictive Love is Blind season 2 .

Where was The Weekend Away filmed?

Netflix movie The Weekend Away was filmed in summer 2021, with scenes predominatly shot in Split and other Croatian cities Dubrovnik and Zagreb. Beth and Kate's hotel was based in Split, located on a street called Trumbićeva Obala. Viewers will also see famous Split landmarks Diocletian’s Palace, The Gregory of Nin statue and the Riviera in the film.

IMDB also credits Zagreb as another filming location for the Netflix movie. Croatia's capital - in particular Franjo Tuđman Square - certainly appears in one sequence. The scene is when Beth takes a taxi and the driver asks her if it is her first time in the country.

Star Leighton Meester confirmed the Croatian location and shared how much she enjoyed the filming of this movie.

"Off-screen, I will say that it was the best place to have a new baby," she said. "Not only was I in Croatia, but people were very supportive of having my baby around, pumping, and feeling mom- and family-friendly and compassionate to that time in my life."

Leighton's husband Adrian Brody confirmed that the two welcomed a "dream boy" in September 2020 during an appearance on Hold the Phone TV . And it seems the new additio followed mum to her sunny set last year.

The Weekend Away synopsis

The Weekend Away is about a holiday that takes a turn for the worse. "A weekend getaway to Croatia goes awry when a woman (Leighton Meester) is accused of killing her best friend (Christina Wolfe) and her efforts to get to the truth uncover a painful secret," tease Netflix.

RottenTomatoes have given it a 60% expert rating which is certainly promising. Whilst viewers have been less kind in their judgement, giving it just 45% out of 100.

"It’s a thriller by name but less edge-of-your-seat than lounging on the couch, absorbing beats of plot like the ocean tide," says Guardian critic Adrian Horton , who gave it 3 stars. "A little provocation with slight commitment – that’s not a bad night in by any means."

The Weekend Away: Cast

  • Leighton Meester ( Gossip Girl, Country Strong ) plays Beth
  • Christina Wolfe ( Batwoman, The Royals ) plays Kate
  • Ziad Bakri ( Screwdriver, Blind Sun ) plays Zain
  • Luke Norris ( Poldark ) plays Rob
  • Amar Bukvic ( Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard, The Volcano ) plays Pavic
  • Iva Mihalic ( Daddy, Strike Back ) plays Kovac

The film's lead Leighton Meester said that she immediately connected to the film because of her character:

"When I got the script initially, it was like, 'This is a 35-year-old woman with a 10-month old baby,’ she tells Tudum. "I thought, 'That is exactly me at this very moment.'"

She added that the "interrogation scenes were probably the hardest". "I was supposed to be sitting at a table and literally pleading my case, being like, ‘I didn’t do this.’ Only being able to use words and not my body and really relying on myself in that room, just sitting, and the words — that was all I could do. I thought that was really challenging."

It seems The Weekend Away 's cast all got on well during filming. Leighton recently shared a photo of the actors enjoying dinner together one night after filming.

"Reminiscing about this wonderful cast and experience," the caption read. "Miss em! Love em! You can watch their incredible performances in #TheWeekendAway streaming now on @netflix."

Is The Weekend Away a true story?

No, The Weekend Away is not a true story but it is based on the 2020 book of the same name by Sarah Alderson. The author helped write the screenplay for the film, which was directed by Kim Farrant.

In an interview , the British-born writer shared that she had a movie in mind when writing it:

"I think I’m lucky because I got to adapt my own book, so I got to put in all my favorite bits," she said. "That’s the joy of being able to adapt your own work is being able to do that. When I wrote the book, I was already imagining it as a movie, so everything key from the book really did go into the script."

Image

She also revealed that the book was inspired by a trip she took with a friend to Lisbon. Though thankfully the book's dark events did not take place in real-life.

"While we were there I was like what would happen if Nicola went missing?," Sarah explains. "I started to follow that train of thought, and I read a lot of news stories and that always gives me little bits of inspiration. That’s not to say they are the same person at all, but I tend to take elements of my friends in terms of physical descriptions more than personality."

5 best road trip movies, ranked

Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis in Thelma and Louise.

Taking a road trip is one of the most fun things you could do if you want to experience freedom, adventure, and discovery. If you want to relieve that thrill of going on a road trip, some movies have captured its exhilarating experience.

Thelma and Louise (1991)

Little miss sunshine (2006), paris, texas (1984).

  • Y tu mamá también (2001)

Easy Rider (1969)

These films shine a light on the ups and downs of going on a road trip with loved ones — or even complete strangers. They take a look into what makes road trips so fun, whether it’s the dramatic moments of self-discovery, the high-octane action sequences, or the hilarious mishaps that make us laugh out loud. So, buckle up and take a look at our list of best road trip movies, from the indie drama Paris, Texas to hysterically tragic Little Miss Sunshine .

Ridley Scott’s Thelma and Louise is a movie about the feminist awakening of two friends. In it, Thelma, a stifled housewife yearning for freedom, embarks on a fishing trip with her friend Louise. What starts as a carefree escape takes a dramatic turn when Louise intervenes in a violent act, forcing them both on a desperate run from the law.

  • 10 best PBS shows ever, ranked
  • 3 underrated Netflix movies you should watch this weekend (May 31-June 2)

The film builds to a truly unforgettable finale, where Thelma and Louise, cornered by the law, make a shocking yet powerful choice. This blend of humor, drama, and action keeps viewers glued to the screen, making it a must-see for adventure seekers. But Thelma and Louise transcends a simple road trip movie. Its exploration of female empowerment and friendship adds depth, making it an enriching and poignant road trip movie to watch.

Watch Thelma and Louise on Amazon Prime Video .

In Little Miss Sunshine , the Hoover family goes on a cross-country trip to make sure young Olive gets to join the titular beauty pageant. But along the way, they go through entertaining hijinks and realizations, such as when their bus breaks down and they’re forced to push-start it, as well as Dwayne’s shattering realization that he’s actually colorblind.

It has an ensemble cast that includes Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette, Steve Carell, and Alan Arkin — all of whom deliver incredible performances. It’s a must-watch road trip movie as it chronicles the hilarious and chaotic journey of a dysfunctional family — which, let’s be honest, is unavoidable if you’re going on a long-haul travel with your family.

Watch Little Miss Sunshine on Hulu .

It’s not hard to see why the indie movie Paris, Texas won the prestigious Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival. Highlighting a story about reconciliation and vindication, Paris, Texas follows Travis Henderson, a man who returns from the unforgiving Texas desert after a self-imposed exile lasting four years. His path to healing includes taking his son and estranged wife Jane on a trip across the breathtaking yet desolate landscapes of the American Southwest.

A powerful moment in the film is the peep-show booth scene, where Travis lays bare all his regrets to Jane, showcasing the strength in human vulnerability. Paris, Texas takes its time, and with good reason: The deliberate pace allows the characters to develop organically. We witness their struggles firsthand and not through rushed exposition, which elevates the watching experience.

Watch Paris, Texas on HBO Max .

Y tu mamá también (2001)

Life is a highway, and for Julio and Tenoch in Alfonso Cuarón’s Y tu mamá también , it’s a bumpy one filled with laughter and heartbreak. This coming-of-age odyssey throws these two teenagers alongside the enigmatic Luisa headfirst into a whirlwind road trip across Mexico. Viewers should brace themselves for a story about youthful abandon clashing with harsh realities, as the main characters navigate self-discovery, sexual awakening, and the lessons life throws their way.

Y tu mamá también’ s story is both raw and tender, as Julio, Tenoch, and Luisa navigate the intricate web of their relationships. The film doesn’t shy away from the harsh realities of growing up, resulting in an ending that will leave you pondering the complexities of friendship and self-discovery long after the credits roll.

Y tu mamá también is streaming on YouTube .

Easy Rider is a road trip movie that highlights the 1960s counterculture movement. In the movie, two bikers named Wyatt and Billy are on a mission to chase freedom across America. But their journey becomes a social commentary as they encounter a microcosm of American society — a lost soul on the road, a suspicious rancher, and the alcoholic lawyer George Hanson, played by an unforgettable Jack Nicholson .

Easy Rider doesn’t shy away from showcasing the breathtaking diversity of the American landscape — from scorching deserts to the lush countryside — with each frame amplifying the sense of an epic adventure. The soundtrack is also a time machine straight to the 1960s with music from The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix, and Steppenwolf, creating an immersive viewing experience. This is a film that will have you questioning societal norms and pondering the true meaning of freedom.

Watch Easy Rider on Apple TV .

In two weeks, Bridgerton season 3 will also reach its conclusion, but it's far from the only new programing in June. So check back every Friday morning as we update the best shows on Netflix soyou'll always have something new to watch on the weekend.

There are better times coming for Netflix this summer, but the first weekend of June is pretty quiet by streaming standards. Jennifer Lopez's sci-fi flick Atlas remains on top of the list of the most popular movies on Netflix. Even Madame Web is hanging around in the top five, while The Super Mario Bros. Movie is once again showing its dominance by climbing up the charts nearly seven months after arriving on Netflix.

This week's newcomers include Security, an action thriller starring Antonio Banderas that went largely unnoticed in 2017. But as we've seen many times before, Netflix subscribers flock to films that never hit it big in theaters. Our second new addition of the week is Butterfly in the Sky, a 2022 documentary about Reading Rainbow.

Amazon Prime Video subscibers are going to have to wait one more day for the June movies to arrive, including Paul Thomas Anderson's classic Punch-Drunk Love. The good news is that Prime Video had one more big release in May that's topping the charts at the moment: Die Hart 2: Die Harter.

Additionally, only a handful of titles were dropped from Prime Video's library for June. So many recent films from Universal Pictures and Paramount remain available. And later this month, Universal's Oppenheimer will be coming to Prime Video as well. Since that's the reigning winner for Best Picture at the Oscars, it's going to be a popular selection.

'The Vow' stars Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams.

One of the best parts of Netflix Netflix is its rich mix of big and small films—for every blockbuster, there’s an indie or a foreign film waiting to catch your eye. And by the end of this month, there’s a healthy mix of each leaving the streaming platform you should aim to watch. From underrated sci-fi thrillers that comment on unquestioning conformity to independent comedies that explore the frivolity of petty rivalries to young adult franchises that have stood the test of time, there’s a soon-to-be-gone film for every kind of viewer waiting to be found before the month closes out.

So what movies do you absolutely not want to miss before? Let’s take a look. Below are my ten picks for the most interesting and entertaining movies to watch before May 2024 ends. I’ve aimed to provide an eclectic list that covers a wide spectrum. Then at the bottom of the article, you can find a full list of every single movie leaving Netflix this month. I’m positive you’ll find your next movie night movie in this bunch.

The 10 Best Movies Leaving Netflix in May 2024

Voyagers (2021).

Sometimes a great genre movie will go completely under the radar, evading the critical and cultural reaction it deserves— Voyagers was such a film back in 2021. Directed by Neil Burger, who gave us movies like Limitless , The Illusionist and The Marsh King’s Daughter , this sci-fi flick centers on a multi-generational mission to colonize a distant planet. This plan takes a dark turn as young men and women, bred for intelligence and obedience, begin to uncover unsettling truths about their mission. As the crew struggles with their newfound freedom and primal instincts, this thought-provoking film raises questions about control and identity in the vastness of space. Voyagers features an ensemble cast led by Tye Sheridan, Lily-Rose Depp and Fionn Whitehead.

World No 1 Djokovic Survives 5 Set Epic To Advance In French Open Match That Ends After 3 AM

New android warning shows why iphone is impossible to beat, nsa warns iphone and android users to turn it off and on again, the hunger games (2012).

I know plenty of young adult novels have been converted into films over the past ten years, but The Hunger Games feels like the last true franchise foray into this Hollywood obsession. Brought to you by director Gary Ross, who also helmed the chair for movies like Ocean’s 8 , Pleasantville and Seabiscuit , this YA classic brings the dystopian world of Panem to life. The four Hunger Games films (if you don’t count the recent prequel) follow our hero Katniss Everdeen as she volunteers to take her sister's place in the deadly “Hunger Games”—a televised event where children fight to the death. Yikes. As she navigates the brutality of the arena and the manipulations of the Capitol, Katniss becomes a symbol of hope and rebellion. The Hunger Games stars Jennifer Lawrence in the lead role, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. (And that doesn’t include the wealth of side characters played by powerhouse actors like Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland and Elizabeth Banks.)

The Vow (2012)

There are two actors in Hollywood that, in my mind, never got the appreciation they have deserved since Day 1: Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams. And they each take starring roles in The Vow . This underrated romance begins after a devastating car accident erases the memory of Leo’s beloved wife, Paige. After that, this devoted husband embarks on a heartfelt journey to win her heart all over again. As she struggles to reconnect with a life she doesn't remember, they face challenges that test the strength of their love. It’s a story that sounds too corny to work...yet every moment hits super close to home. Directed by Michael Sucsy, who brought us the romantic fantasy film Every Day , The Vow stars McAdams and Tatum in a touching story inspired by true events.

Sniper: Rogue Mission (2022)

I truly mean no disrespect to a film like Sniper: Rogue Mission when I say this, but: sometime you just need to watch a basic-as-heck action movie. But basic in the most entertaining way possible—basic in the way where depth takes a backseat to interesting characters and well-constructed sequences. This film from Oliver Thompson, who also wrote and directed Sniper: G.R.I.T. Global Response & Intelligence Team , focuses on a high-stakes operation gone awry, which forces CIA rogue mission forces elite sniper Brandon Beckett into a deadly game of cat and mouse. As he uncovers a conspiracy within the agency, he must use all his skills to survive and bring the truth to light. Sniper: Rogue Mission stars Chad Michael Collins, Ryan Robbins and Sayaka Akimoto.

Oh, Ramona! (2019)

This is most definitely a comedy that most people haven’t seen, as it came from the mind of Romanian comedian Andrei Ciobanu (who wrote the source novel). But make no mistake: this highly stylized, offbeat rom-com can be appreciated by anyone who loves a good coming-of-age love story. The movie centers on teenager Andrei, whose awkward crush on his alluring classmate Ramona turns his world upside down, leading him on a hilarious journey of self-discovery. As he navigates the chaos of adolescence and first love, he encounters plenty of unexpected twists and colorful characters. Directed by Cristina Jacob, Oh, Ramona! stars Aggy K., Bogdan Iancu and Holly Horne.

Split (2016)

It’s the movie that brought M. Night Shyamalan back to relevance...but rest assured, he never truly left. Split is merely a continuation of the wildly entertaining formula he perfected with his first big hit, The Sixth Sense , and then continued with fantastic flicks like Unbreakable , Signs , The Village —the list goes on. This twisted take on the superhero genre follows three girls who are kidnapped by a man with 23 distinct personalities—each battling for control. As they struggle to escape, they encounter his most dangerous persona yet, known only as "The Beast." Directed by M. Night Shyamalan, Split features a mesmerizing performance by James McAvoy, supported by Anya Taylor-Joy and Betty Buckley.

Catfight (2016)

I will admit, I’ve never seen another one of Onur Tukel’s films. But perhaps the Turkish artist deserves more of my attention given how wonderfully a comedy like Catfight works . This independent gem tells the story of two college rivals, Veronica and Ashley, who reunite at a posh party—and their long-standing animosity quickly escalates into a series of brutal brawls. As they sabotage each other's lives, their rivalry becomes an absurdly violent cycle of revenge that escalates and escalates and escalates, before reaching its conclusion in the most satisfyingly cathartic way possible. Catfight stars the incredibly versatile pair of Sandra Oh and Anne Heche in a darkly comedic satire that explores themes of envy, social status and the absurdity of personal grudges.

Skyscraper (2018)

If there’s one thing on which you can count when it comes to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, it’s that he’ll give you your money’s worth at the movies—and that is most definitely true when it comes to a spectacle like Skyscraper . The former wrestling star takes on the role of Will Sawyer, a former FBI agent turned security expert who is framed for setting fire to the world's tallest and safest building. With his family trapped inside, he must clear his name and find the real culprits while navigating the burning skyscraper. Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who also brought us movies like Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story , We’re the Millers and Central Intelligence , this high-budget-and-high-octane Johnson-fronted thriller also stars Neve Campbell and Chin Han.

Amar (2017)

Coupled with the subtitle With You Until the End of the World , you can tell what kind of love story you’re dealing with when it comes to Amar —a rich, an emotionally trying, a tumultuous and possibly unsustainable one . Carlos and Laura experience the intense and all-consuming passion of first love, but as they grow older, their relationship becomes tested by the realities of life. The film captures the beauty and pain of such a youthful romance, exploring how it shapes their identities and future. Directed by Esteban Crespo, Amar stars María Pedraza and Pol Monen. This poignant Spanish drama aims to unpack the endlessly emotional complexities of love, the enduring hardship of commitment, the bittersweet nature of growing up.

Insidious (2010)

From the very beginning with Saw , you could see that director James Wan just had it . His signature style, his approach to visual storytelling was evident. But Insidious is where we witnessed the director that operates today—the one that made The Conjuring , Malignant and Aquaman —become his true artistic self. This classic horror film follows a family that moves into a new home, only to discover it is haunted by malevolent spirits. When their son falls into an inexplicable coma, they realize his consciousness is trapped in a dark, otherworldly realm. This chilling film blends the supernatural with its slowly unfolding narrative in typical Wan fashion, exploring themes of fear and the unknown, showcasing the lengths parents will go to save their children along the way. Insidious stars Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne and Lin Shaye.

Police officer takes teens on a camping trip to give them a ‘safe place’ over Memorial Day weekend

CHICAGO (WBBM) - The prevalence of gun violence during the Memorial Day weekend in Chicago is a concern every year, but a police program is actively working to change that.

City life is always busy and noisy.

“Anywhere in the city, you always hear sirens,” Mikey Malarski said.

That is why Mikey, 17, and more than a dozen other youngsters got a change of scenery over the weekend.

“I’m kind of nervous. I’ve never been, like, very far from the city,” he said.

Snacks and supplies were loaded into a 15-passenger van as Officer Will Martinez with the Chicago Police Department’s 15th district prepared to drive two hours west.

“All the youth that you see around you, they’re actually involved with different programs at the 15th District,” he said.

Joshua Torres, 17, lives in the Austin community.

“I see a lot of things, you know, that’s dangerous. A lot of shootings, a lot of drive-bys. I try my best to stay safe and be in the house so nothing bad will happen to me,” he said.

Joshua started hanging out at the 15th district police station when he was 7 and has been part of the Officer Explorer Program.

Ten years later, he voluntarily chose to hang out with the officers for a Memorial Day camping outing to feel “more safe.”

“It’s more safe,” he said. “I’m not in danger where something bad is going to happen to me if I step out.”

The Memorial Day weekend unofficially kicks off summer, yet in Chicago, it has also proven to be deadly and violent. It is what prompted the 15th district to start the camp outing four years ago.

“As long as they put in the work in building up their community, I wanted to give them a safe place. So we take them from here, uproot them, give them a safe place. It’s a gated camping ground. They can roam around. It’s more fun for them,” Martinez said.

The trip allows the teens to escape the violence and build bonds.

“I don’t see him as a cop. I see him more like a father figure,” Joshua said.

Martinez said they are all part of the community and are building it up together.

. furiosa: a mad max saga.

Mad Max: Fury Road blew audiences away after it premiered in 2015, winning six of its ten Oscar nominations. In director George Miller’s new prequel, Anya Taylor-Joy takes over for Charlize Theron (with Alyla Browne playing an even younger Furiosa early in the film) as she seeks revenge on the man who stole her from her home, Dementus (Chris Hemsworth). While you may know what becomes of Furiosa, you’ll still be on the edge of your seat throughout. —S.S.

The 30-Second Q&A

The fall guy.

Eric Vilas-Boas: This movie hit VOD this week, but you’ve been telling people to go see it, at a theater.

Roxana Hadadi: I have, and I just learned of some success: I had hyped it up to my physical therapist and he ended up seeing it with his brother and his girlfriend! It’s wonderfully fizzy and entertaining, a lively and immersive exhibit of Ryan Gosling’s star power (is he the hottest man to ever live, based on how he looks in one of many “running to the woman I love” scenes in this movie? Maybe!) and cinema spectacle (any kind of stunt you want, The Fall Guy ’s got). It’s the kind of movie, with big explosions and big romance , that people keep saying they want to see in theaters.

E.V.B.: What was your PT’s review?

R.H.: He really enjoyed how huge the film’s finale goes. It gives Gosling one final opportunity to walk the film’s line between satire and celebration. He thought Gosling was amusing in Barbie , but he was surprised that he could be this funny.

E.V.B.: Anything else we should know about Fall Guy ?

R.H.: I need that Miami Vice stunt-team jacket immediately. For all my action (sitting on my couch).

A Strange Day is the Portland-based tribute to The Cure. Photo by Seth D. Warner

Let’s start with Portland-based A Strange Day, a tribute to British alternative act The Cure, fronted by singer and guitarist Seth Warner.

The band will perform The Cure’s second album, “Seventeen Seconds,” in its entirety, along with some hits and other cuts at Portland House of Music on Thursday.

The album was released on April 18, 1980. Lead singer and guitarist Robert Smith turned 21 three days later. The single  “A Forest” marked the band’s debut on the U.K. Singles Chart, where it reached the No. 31 spot. The song remains a setlist staple at The Cure’s live performances.

Warner said he put himself in the shoes of Cure fans when deciding what album to cover. “What I would like to hear from a Cure band is a dive into the specific eras that surrounded each record, and ‘Seventeen Seconds’ set the tone for the more introspective and gloomy textures and themes.” Advertisement

As for Warner’s favorite “Seventeen Seconds” tracks, he said, “I really like ‘At Night’ for its dynamic potential, and the edgy and angsty ‘M.'”

The band took its name from the track “A Strange Day” from The Cure’s 1982 album “Pornography.”

Along with Warner, the band is Pete Dugas (keys), Andrew Hodgkins (drums), Matt Kennedy (synth/sax), Kevin O’Reilly (bass), Casey Urich (trumpet) and Corey Urich.

Angel Butts, a copy editor living in Westbrook, has seen The Cure more than 100 times on three continents and at least 10 countries, including Latvia and Colombia. “They’re like breathing to me. They have this massive catalog and it spans every possible mood, I don’t know of another band with a palette like that. “Seventeen Seconds” is among her favorite of the band’s 13 studio albums.

Butts has seen The Cure play the “Seventeen Seconds” album all the way through three times. “One of those shows stands as the best show I’ve ever seen in my life. The Cure: Reflections, Nov. 27, 2011 at the  Beacon Theatre in New York City.”

Butts said she and her 13-year-old daughter will be attending the A Strange Day show. “I think she’s more excited than I am.” Advertisement

Another British act that will likely never perform in Maine is The Rolling Stones. With more than 30 albums, the band achieved legendary status decades ago. Singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards are both 80, and the band is currently on tour and will be at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, on Thursday.

There are still tickets left for that show, but you can save yourself hours of traffic jams and a lot of more by instead heading to Aura on Saturday to see Satisfaction: The International Rolling Stones tribute show. Or maybe you’ll see the real deal and then keep the party going here in Maine.

Satisfaction has been slinging Stones hits for over two decades and has played more than 4,000 shows. Chris LeGrand’s take on Mick Jagger is pretty convincing, and he and the band will surely be pleased to meet you.

David Bowie and Prince died within five months of each other in 2016, at the ages of 69 and 57, respectively, and their losses were felt by millions of fans around the world. Advertisement

With contributions that are impossible to quantify, both artists left behind a legacy of music that lives on through radio play, home listening and tribute shows.

Boston-based musician Eric Gould loves both artists and is the bandleader of a Prince/Bowie tribute coming to Portland on Saturday. The band is a revolving lineup of players from all over the country.

Gould plays bass and designs the setlists. For this show, the musicians are Cal Kehoe (guitar, vocals), Adrian Tramontano (drums), Sammi Garrett (percussion, vocals), Josh Schwartz (baritone sax, vocals), Rob Somerville (tenor saxophone), Rob Volo (trombone) and Kiran Edwards (keys).

Gould said that, to him, Prince embodies soul, creative arrangement and precision. “His music has the best energy and makes you feel on top of the universe.”

He described Bowie as having a voice and character that is completely unique.

“It is powerful and epic and decadent,” said Gould, who has made a career out of finding unique connections through the songbooks of artists. “It is such a treat to present music people know and love in a way that is fresh to the ears. This combination brings so much joy to everyone on and off stage.” Advertisement
