Voyage Century Overview

Voyage Century Online is a client-based historical MMORPG available on Windows. Players take control of a character that can pick from five professions: Royal Military Officer, Imperial Guardian, Caribbean Pirate, Treasure Hunter and Armed Businessman, each focusing on specific aspects of the game to suit different play styles and roles within the game world, although the character’s class does not necessarily limit the player into the recommended role. Players can level a variety of skills, from individual weapon skills, to bartering and ship building skills that are leveled up with experience, none of which are tied to the player’s profession, allowing the player free reign on how they choose to play. Characters can fight on land and at sea through the game’s MMORPG-style combat and its unique ship combat system that allows players to board enemy ships or sink them. Voyage Century is one of the few nautical MMOs along with Uncharted Waters Online and Pirates of the Burning Sea .

Voyage Century Online - Official Gameplay Trailer

Voyage Century Review

Though it’s been available for many years in Asia and parts of Europe, Voyage Century wasn’t officially released for the North American market until April 2007 by IGG. The game has gone through several major updates since its inception. Originally, there were no classes and players started in different cities based on their character choice. The old tutorial has since been ditched in favor of a more robust questing system that slowly introduces players to the game’s basics. Voyage Century today is a much more approachable MMORPG that still retains its unique characteristics. If sailing from Lisbon to Athens than on to Seoul sounds like an exciting evening to you, read on!

It’s All Greek To Me

For such an otherwise in-depth game, Voyage Century’s character creation process is a major let down. There are four character models to choose from (two male and two female). Each has a small selection of hair and face styles but are otherwise identical. Players are given three character slots on each of the (currently) four live servers, so players should feel free to experiment with the multiple classes. You don’t actually get to pick your profession until entering the game for the first time. New players start in Athens next the all important Profession Mentor. A screen prompt asks whether the player is ready to choose a profession; answer yes and a screen appears that gives a brief description of the five available classes. If the class names sound a little odd, don’t get your hopes up for the rest of the game’s text and grammar. For more info on the classes, you can see the overview tab. Just remember that all classes are capable of fighting, gathering, and crafting, so don’t be too concerned with your first class choice.

Chose Your Profession

Remember that Profession Mentor NPC I mentioned earlier? Well, he plays by far the most important part in your character’s development. The quests he gives are simply the only way to progress in Voyage Century. Each of his quests yield an experience reward large enough to level your character up well into the late teens. Compared the quest reward experience, the small experience gained by hunting at land or sea is negligible. The point I’m trying to make here is that these quests are not optional, they act as both the game’s tutorial and primary mode of advancement. Luckily, Voyage Century as a great auto-walk feature. Not only can players pull up an area map and click on it to move, but they can click quest objectives in their quest log and automatically start walking there. The auto-walk even goes through zones and keeps going on its own! It even works at sea, guiding your ship from one port to another (more on sailing later.) The auto-walk does get stuck on occasion (the pathing is rather poorly designed), but even having to re-click once in a while is favorable to manually searching for a particular monster spawn or NPC in a capital city.

Quests and More Quests

The first few quests introduce players to the key NPCs in the city, then to land-based combat. Combat and movement work just like in most MMORPGs; point and click with the mouse. My only complaint with land-based combat is that the animals have small hit boxes, which makes it difficult to target them while either the player or target are moving. A more general problem that makes itself evident at this point is the complete lack of difficulty. New players have over 600 health and only take 1-5 damage per hit from monsters their level. The fact that players can defeat anything near their level range with two or three hits adds to the lack of challenge. I went through the first 20 levels without ever having to use a healing potion, rest, or even look at my health bar. At around level 15 you’ll be sent on your first sailing mission, which involves buying commodities from one city and delivering them to another. The ability to play on land and sea adds a whole layer of depth to Voyage Century and is a feature found only in a select few games (like Florensia and Water Margin Online ).

Turn to Port, No Don’t Drop Anchor!

I have yet to play a sailing game that did not frustrate me. Whether it’s The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker or Sid Meier’s Pirates!, trying to control a ship during combat while struggling with the wind always manages to drive me crazy. Before even setting sail, players must purchase NPC sailor crew members, provisions, cannons, and ammo. This means that during a fight there are nearly half a dozen ways for you to be screwed. The first and rarest is having your ship’s health run out. Considering the starter Dragon Ship has over 11,000 hp, this isn’t a problem. The second way is for your sail’s durability to drop to 0 rendering you immobile. This too is rare. The third and most common is for all your crew members to either die or become injured. Every time your ship is hit with a cannon barrage, it chips away at your hull but also has a chance of injuring your crew. Since the max crew on a beginner vessel is only around 100, this can happen within a few minutes of sustained attack. The final way you could end up a sitting duck is by burning through your provisions or ammo. Luckily this is a mistake generally only made once; after running out of cannon balls in the middle of a fight I learned to always carry a huge surplus. You wouldn’t believe how fast a ship with 70 cannons can burn through 2,000 cannon balls!

Skills & Advancement

Voyage Century has a standard leveling system that compliments the more important skill-based progression. There are 17+ different skills ranging from weapon skills (swords, falchions, axe, guns) to crafting and sailing related skills. Each skill ranks up as its used with a max rank of 120. While players can learn every skill, they may only max out a select few. This is because a skill will stop gaining experience at rank 31 and require a ‘phase 2 upgrade’, which is only available through a special NPC. Players only receive 8 phase 2 upgrades unless they’re willing to fork over cash at the item mall. While sailing the high seas, players will notice a particular skill that quickly gains in rank: voyage. Voyage is a special skill that all players can max out to level 100. You don’t even have to move for it to gain in rank, as long as you’re out at sea. It doesn’t take much imagination to figure out that this and many other skills can be grinded out even while you’re not in front of the keyboard. The game also has a built in botting system similar to the one in Jade Dynasty and GodsWar Online . Players can bring up a AFK system menu and set the game to play on it self, loot items, and so forth. This does cheapen the gameplay experience, but seems to be a standard feature in Chinese developed MMORPGs.

Grind While You Wait

Which leads me to my next complaint with the game: AFK grinders. Players can set themselves to automatically attack a target that strikes them first. Dozens of high level players activate this feature, go to a monster spawn and leave themselves afk all night. There are of course two sides to this issue: it makes ranking up much easier for everyone, but can frustrate newbies who are trying to kill ten wolves and have to compete for the spawn with a bunch of jerks. Luckily, Voyage Century boasts open PvP in most areas on land and sea. Killing innocents comes with a price, though. NPC guards and ships will attack players with high notoriety on sight. There are also dozens of different factions which players can either gain or lose reputation with. Killing NPC pirates off the coast of Crete will increase your standing with the Greeks, but lower it with the pirates. This adds a layer of nuance to the game often only found in pay-to-play games.

Advanced Techniques

Raising skill rank not only improves their use but also allows players to learn various ‘stunts’ based on those skills. For example your rank in the voyage skill effects your ramming and grappling ability. Ramming is the best way for a large vessel to knock out a small, weaker vessel in a single shot. Grappling allows one crew to board another and turn a ranged sea battle into a melee one. Certain classes are more proficient at melee so they’ll always be attempting to sail in close enough to pull off a grapple while the other ship tries to stay at a safe distance. Each profession has different stunt trees; land based, sea based, and profession (crafting.) Leveling, skills, and stunts are a lot to wrap your head around, but it all reveals itself in an orderly manner while playing. Few free games give players this much control over their character’s growth.

Explore The World

Combat is not the only road to take in Voyage Century. Those who prefer a more calming career can pursue the life of a merchant who is only interested in turning the highest profit. Each city has different commodities: Athens is renowned for its fish while Istanbul has the best olives. Buying a cargo full of one item and transporting it to a distant shore can net a huge profit. Similarly, players can mine ore, cut trees, fish, farm, become shipbuilders, blacksmiths, tailors, or alchemists, but even the most honest businessman would be a fool to travel unarmed. The open PvP aspects of the game make it a necessity to always be ready to defend yourself from scoundrels at sea. Players who just want to explore the vast oceans or have a completionist streak can travel the world in search of discoveries. The exploration feature in Voyage Century is much lauded; visiting Alexandria will unlock information about the ancient city in your log book, so will visiting the Spanish port of Genoa. There are literally hundreds of discoveries to be made and filling your guidebook cold take many months of gameplay. I’ve tried to cover the most important aspects of the game in the space I had, but I’ll end by saying that Voyage Century is large enough to have its own database program which details all the game’s cities, quests, items, monsters, nobility titles, ship types, and so on. Such an in-depth game is not for everyone, the learning curve is much higher than in other MMORPGs, but for those looking for a game to get absorbed in, Voyage Century makes a fine selection.

Final Verdict: Good

Voyage Century is a breath of fresh air in a market saturated with generic fantasy titles. The ability to hunt on land or wage war at sea along with the option to become a merchant or explorer add a great deal of depth to this already massive game.

History [ | ]

Prior to its English launch, Voyage Century Online was available to players in China, South Korea, and Germany. An alpha test open to 1000 players began on the English version on December 8, 2006 and an open beta version was launched on December 22, 2006. The game's full version was released April 8, 2007 [1]

Storyline background [ | ]

Voyage Century Online is an elite game against the beautiful backdrop of Europe in 16th-century. The game has its roots in the glorious age of Sail, allowing players to embark on magnificent vessels that embodied the adventurous spirit of an age when men sought great adventures and epic quests.

From the 15th century, western European explorers push eastward in an effort to seek treasures, spices and other luxuries of that time. They opened a gate to riches and greed for those in power, who sponsored explorers' cause without abandonment. As the fleets stretched their paths, westerners expanded their influences to Africa. Later they cruised around Cape of Good Hope to reach Indian Ocean. In the other direction, they explored westward and found the New World. The late 15th century saw the start of the global expansion of Western capitalism and colonial exploitation of the rest of the world.

VCO storyline begins at Mediterranean from the late 15th to early 16th century. The western powers start the bloody pursuit of riches that led Europe in to an age of great turmoil. Every character in the game was from a mysterious birth. Some of them are descendants of the courageous cavalry in Yuan Empire, some carry the family line of caravan merchants faring the Silk Road, some are the witnesses of the not so well known affair between of Marco Polo and Chinese princess, and some are even the offspring of west Europe's pirates. But all players are to maintain a firm belief: the pursuit of peace and hope. Bearing the faith, they embarked on a passionate adventure on the High Seas.

Skill/stunt system [ | ]

Introduction Voyage Century offers 17 unique skills for the characters: navigation, sea battle, eloquence , sword -playing, falchion -playing, axe-playing, shooting, medicine, bare-hand fighting, mining, timber-felling, planting, fishing, foundry, sewing, alchemy and ship building.

Basic skills There are three stages in every skill, initial skill, phase 2 promotion skill and phase 3 promotion skill. Initial skills can be upgraded to level 31, phase 2 promotion skills can be upgraded to level 100, and phase 3 skill can be upgraded to 120. The newly created characters obtain one phase 2 promoted skill: navigation (upper limit: 100 level), and three initial skills: sea battle, eloquence, and bare-hand fighting. Other skills can be learned from skill tutors in the game. The tutors are usually at the city gates. Every character can learn all initial skills, but can only promote 7 skills to phase 2. Promoting more skills to 2nd phase requires special skill-promoting books which can be bought with Item Mall points.

Special skills Every time a skill gets increased by 4 levels, player will receive one stunt point. Stunt points can be exchanged for special stunt skills (sub skills). Special skills are divided into 2 categories. Passive and active. Active skills require stamina points (blue bar) to be activated. Stamina points can be recovered through sitting for a rest or using recovery potions. Passive skills usually increase characters base stats like +5 SP (stamina point).

Professions [ | ]

In the new version, there are 5 new professions for players to choose from. Each profession has its own strengths and weaknesses, so whether you can stand out in the game depends on whether you can make full use of the strengths.

Royal Military Officer: Very high ranking military officer who is not only good with a cannon but also good at land battles. Imperial Guardian: The elite of the Emperor's army, good with the falchion, the axe, and the sword to name but a few. Although melee is their main strength, they can defeat enemies by using grappling tactics during sea battles too. Caribbean Pirate: Roaming the Caribbean, they consider killing and robbery to be their hobbies. Very good at melee battles, and having many attack tactics such as grappling, ramming, and short cannon attacks to defeat enemies during sea battles. Treasure Hunter: They have the passion to explore every corner of the world to find treasure. However they also excel at long distance cannon attacks, mines, and ramming tactics. On the ground, they are sharpshooters and smart enough to deal with all kinds of urgent matters. Armed Businessman: Good at defense but bad at attacking, in addition, their main strength lies in repairing and enhancing ships, and healing sailors. On the ground, they are good at healing, assisting, and shooting.

Professions can be leveled. With higher level professions, more skills gets available. Upper limit of profession level is 120. Every profession level gives +10 HP (health point) and +5 SP (stamina point).

Reputation and noble titles [ | ]

Reputation can be acquired many ways - through authenticating treasures, discovery, quests...

Noble titles are divided into 13 levels and 5 groups. Each of titles requires a certain amount of reputation and silver coins.

Another aspect of the game is item refining. Every armor or equipment can be refined to add different bonuses on them. Those refiners are obtainable in-game or Item Mall.

Patches [ | ]

Voyage Century has had 2 notable patches, first the Colony patch, released in January 2009, which allowed guilds to build small colonies throughout the game world. As well as the Beyond the Horizon patch released on the 25th of November 2009, which added the continent of America, presenting 6 new cities, 4 new pets, 5 character classes and other features. The profession level max was also increased to level 150, whereas it was previously 120. The patch also released new weapons, armor quests (to make the new armors) and new jewelries to match the new profession levels.

Voyage Century Online: Sea Mermaid, the Storm Killer

Games in this article: Voyage Century

IGG has some good news for VCO players. The Sea Mermaid will make its debut in the update of Voyage Century Online-Colony Age. From now on, players can brave any storm in their way because the Sea Mermaid is the storm killer.

Storm Killing + Auto Track=Safety

In the Colony Age instance, the VCO team offers its players the auto track function which can be used to facilitate treasure hunting. When players are sailing on the sea to detect where the treasure is hidden, it is a risky little game for them if they meet an unexpected storm. Ship wreckage can not only cause serious property loss but even endanger their lives.

Now things are different. Players will benefit from the Sea Mermaid. The Sea Mermaid and Auto Track functioning together will build an impregnable protection for players to set sail and conquer the sea.

Storm Killing + Popular Trading=Time Savings

In the Colonial Age, one of the most popular events is Popular Trading. After it was held for the first time, it has been enjoying a boom among players. Now Popular Trading is the word everyone keeps talking about.

But if you ask players what they most desperately hope for during popular trading, the answer will be no storm blocking their way to discovering treasure. They want their hunting trip to be safe, easy and not time consuming. Now the Sea Mermaid will help them realize this.

Voyage Century Online

A guide to help newbies in war, combat and trade.

We believe many rookies will be at their wits' end figuring out what must be done and how to realize quick character progress at the moment you start playing a MMORPG game. Now, the Voyage Century Online team is making fast progress even easier by tailor-making three progress routes to get you off to a good start.

Ships in VCO usually fall into three main categories, Warship, Raider and Merchant Ship. Warships boast extraordinary performance in naval combat due to the extensive Gun Emplacement they have. Raiders sail at a high speed with the most sailors on board. They are an excellent choice for close combat. Merchant Ships are for trade. When looking at a ship’s health, Merchant Ships have the most HP, Warship second most and Raiders have the least. However, the population of sailors on Raiders is the highest. Warships are staffed by fewer sailors, and Merchant Ships have the fewest. So, depending on your preferred style of play, practical strategies can be worked out for any of these 3 classes of ships.

Progress with Raiders :

1. Buy a new ship from the Shipyard Boss at the dock. Transform this ship into a level 1 Raider with two pieces of wood and two bars of iron with help from the Shipyard Boss.

2. Players can find helpful posts in VCO’s forum guiding them to locate the Level 1 Finding at sea. Just remember to make sure you have enough sailors and supplies on board.

3. The location of the Level 1 Finding will keep flashing. Set sail to the center of the flashing area and send 5 to 10 sailors to discover this Level 1 Finding.

4. After getting control of the Level 1 Finding, players will accumulate much gold which can be used to open most of the European Maps. Then go to the Shipyard in Genoa to transform the current Raider into a level 2 Raider while also tracking the Level 2 Finding. Do not stop repeating this circle until all the Findings at all levels have been found.

5. Using a Raider may require players to have certain naval fighting and navigation skills. Players can even have a go at a Dragon Head Gunboat to improve these required skills.

Progress with Warships :

1. You don’t need to do any transformation to these ships. Dragon Head Gunboats are available completely prepared for battle on the high seas.

2. You will get exp by killing pirates on the Crete Battlefield. It will help you a lot if you buy special Cannon Balls in the four newbie cities.

3. When your naval war level goes up, it is the time for you to learn the Guard skill and to survive the cruel war.

4. Be advised, your ship must be outfitted with special sailing gear to reduce the damage inflicted upon the sailors on board.

5: When you are at a high level, you can use high level Mines to kill fish when it blows up. Five players who team up to do this will get a lot of EXP.

Progress route with Merchant Ships:

1. You set sail by Dragon Head Gunboat to do trade and find the origin of goods.

2. You will get money and EXP by selling goods.

3. Pay attention to some rare goods that are produced in two faraway cities. In this case, you will get the profits for selling the goods in the nearest city.

4. When you are at a high level, you can learn Purchasing to buy high level goods.

5. You must team up to do trade. Skilled merchants prefer sailing on small boats and doing trade. If you are in a team, you can make it much easier to trade by just doing what others do and ask whenever you feel puzzled or something is misunderstood.

Voyage Century's storyline begins in the Mediterranean from the late 15th to early 16th century. The western powers started the bloody pursuit of riches that led Europe into an age of great turmoil. Every character in the game was from a mysterious birth. Some of them are descendants of the courageous cavalry in the Yuan Empire, some carry the family line of caravan merchants faring the Silk Road, some are the witnesses of the not-so-well-known affair between Marco Polo and the Chinese princess, and some are even the offspring of West Europe's pirates.

Voyage Century Online is a third-person massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). Character, ship and camera movements are fully controlled by a mouse , while skills can be controlled using a keyboard , through the skill shortcut bar. At the beginning of the game, players are asked to choose one of the five professions available, Royal Military Officer, Imperial Guardian, Caribbean Pirate, Treasure Hunter or Armed Businessman. Professions can be leveled, up to level 180, by gaining experience point s from performing various tasks in the game, e.g. crafting, fighting animals, and completing quests. Leveling a profession is beneficial as new professional skills are unlocked with every new level. Each profession has its own unique skill set and role it plays in the game. Professions can be changed at any point which gives players a rather varied gameplay. In addition to professions, there are four different weapons available, axe , sword , falchion and gun . Players are not required to choose any specific weapon, but certain professions will benefit from certain weapons, e.g. Treasure Hunter is specialized in using guns and will do more damage fighting with a gun.

The game features many different systems of which the most noted ones are the skill system, exploration system, trading system, rank system, refining system and upgrading system.

Skill system

Every character has 17 different skills available for leveling, ranging from fighting skills to collection and production skills. Skills are leveled by performing various tasks (e.g. fighting animals, sewing, mining) and gaining experience points from them. Skills are essential to players' progress in-game as they have many uses in-game, of which the most noted ones are crafting equipment and collecting materials. Most importantly they are required for sailing various ships and using various equipment.

Exploration system

Exploration system is a unique system which keeps track of players' exploration progress. Through exploring different areas of the game, players earn points which can be used to take various rewards from the exploration system. Points are mostly gained by killing animals, sinking ships, authenticating plants and minerals, and finishing various quests throughout the world.

Trading system

The trading system gives players the ability to purchase goods ( commodities ) from one city and sell them in another city. Every city and colony has its own supply and demand. Having higher amity with countries, grants the ability to purchase goods at lower prices resulting in more profit. Goods can be traded freely between cities for a huge profit and experience. Having goods on the ship whilst sailing on the high seas attracts the attention of pirate NPC ships. Players are able to team up, creating huge trading fleets, allowing them to combat pirates more efficiently.

Rank system

There are 2 ranks available in the game, noble rank and honored officer rank. Noble rank is acquired by gaining reputation. Reputation can be acquired in many ways, some of them being authenticating treasures, discovering animals, sinking ships and finishing quests. Honored Officer rank is acquired by gaining contribution points. Contribution points are gained by participating in Petro Fortress and Labrinton Coast battlegrounds, PvP events with capture the flag -style gameplay. Ranks are required by various equipment, following the common rule: the higher the equipment level, the higher the rank that is required to equip them.

Refining system

Equipment found in the game can be refined through the refining system to add different bonuses on them. Items used to refine equipment, called refining items in-game, can be found either in-game in various instances or in item mall by purchasing them.

Upgrading system

The upgrading system is used to upgrade equipment to a higher level. Unlike crafting, upgrading equipment allows players to keep bonuses which they added through the refining system.

Voyage Century features 22 different PvE instances, areas that will generate a new copy of the location for each team of players that enters the area. This ensures that different teams are able to interact with an area privately, without interference from other teams. Teams can contain up to 5 players. Instances are divided into two main categories, land- and sea-based. There are 6 sea and 16 land instances available in total. Instances contain special monsters and ships with valuable drops. Most of the items required for refining and upgrading equipment are found exclusively in these areas. Beside instances, almost all cities have suburban areas with various vicious animals ready to attack. In addition, the game features historically famous pirates like Hayreddin Barbarossa , William Dampier , John Hawkins and others.

Voyage Century has a very restrictive PvP system. Players are able to experience PvP in certain areas like suburbs, offshores, islands and dungeons. Players are not allowed to experience PvP in city residential areas and ports. Attacking another player will result in gaining notoriety points. Notorious players are marked with red names and will be hunted by guards and patrol ships. Notoriety will also result in dropping items from the player's inventory should the player die. Notoriety can be removed by going to jail or by using special items. In addition to regular PvP, there are special events like guild wars, siege wars and battlegrounds. Killing players during these events will not result in gaining notoriety.

Guild wars are guild PvP battles in a specifically designed enclosed area away from other players. They feature last man standing -style gameplay. Players start fighting in a sea scene allowing them to launch massive sea attacks on their opponents. If the attacking team manages to sink all players from the defending team, the fight will move on the land. The last guild with an active land player wins. Should the defenders sink all players from the attacking team, the land fighting part is skipped and defenders are automatically declared victorious. Winning guilds will gain a small amount of guild funds and points, as opposite of losing guilds which will lose a small amount guild funds and points. Unlike siege wars, in guild wars, guilds will be aided by guild defense towers, NPC ships and soldiers.

Siege wars are massive PvP events which happen once a week. Guilds are able to siege cities to claim ownership. Owning a city has many benefits, some of them being, an ability to purchase special limited items or collecting taxes from NPC traders. Guilds are allowed to invite allied guilds to aid them. Siege wars contain two main components, city's barbette and mothership. Prior to the siege, an attacking guild has to set up a mothership somewhere on the high sea. Mothership contains a flag and serves as a spawning point for the attacking team. Barbette contains a flag and serves as a spawning point for the defending team. In order to claim the ownership of the city, the attacking guild needs to destroy the flag located on top of the barbette. Should the defending guild destroy the flag located on the mothership first, the siege will end resulting in a victory for the defending team.

Battlegrounds are small PvP-based events with capture the flag-style gameplay in which two teams fight for four flags located on various points on the map.
