Your chance of acceptance, your chancing factors, extracurriculars, upenn virtual campus tour experience.

Hey everyone, since I can't visit UPenn in person at the moment, I'm thinking about taking a virtual campus tour. Has anyone done this before and can share their thoughts on the experience? Does it give a good feel for the campus?

Hey there! I've heard from many students who have taken the UPenn virtual campus tour, and they've found it to be a helpful resource in getting a sense of the campus layout and its overall vibe. The virtual tour provides 360-degree panoramas of different locations on-campus, including academic buildings, common areas, and residence halls. It's accompanied by detailed descriptions and some interesting facts about each location.

While it may not fully replicate the immersive experience of an in-person visit, the virtual tour can still be valuable in giving you a sense of the campus environment and whether or not it feels like a place where you could see yourself. Keep in mind, though, that it's essential to also consider other factors such as academic offerings, extracurricular activities, and the student body when determining if a school is the right fit for you.

In addition to the virtual tour, UPenn may also offer online information sessions or virtual Q&A panels with current students and faculty. Attending such events can give you more insights into the campus culture, academics, and student life. You can also check out student-made videos on YouTube or read campus newspapers online for a more authentic and unfiltered perspective.

Hope this helps! Good luck exploring UPenn and finding the right college for you!

What every first-year needs to know: Student tour guides offer tips, advice

A half-dozen student tour guides share a few things they wish they’d known as they started at penn..

students walking in penn commons with penn shield in background

It’s almost here—finally. Boxes and suitcases are packed with four seasons’ worth of clothing, laptops and water bottles sporting new Penn-themed stickers, photos of high school friends, family pets, and silly siblings are framed and ready to transport. First-year students and their families are gearing up for Move-In, armed with everything they need for a successful start to college.

But a group of Penn student tour guides has something extra to offer these almost-first-years: some helpful advice. Introducing prospective and current students to Penn’s campus is what these guides do best, so Penn Today has tapped a half dozen of them to take that expertise a step further and share a few things they wish they knew when they were just starting at Penn. From time management skills to tips on dorm life, here’s some advice for incoming first-years to bring along to campus on their first day.

Joyce Davis

Rising fourth-year majoring in neuroscience in the School of Arts & Sciences, from Philadelphia

“Don’t be afraid to explore the entire Philly area, because University City is completely different from Center City,” Davis says. “So, if you want somewhere to eat, Reading Terminal Market is there. If you want somewhere to get away from the loudness of the city area, you can go behind the Museum of Art.”

joyce davis with flowers in foreground

One thing Davis wished she knew when she started at Penn were the different ways to study abroad, because she thought her major was so credit-heavy she’d have to stay in Philadelphia. But she learned about Penn Global Seminars and is going to Chile in January, as part of the Health and the Healthcare System in Chile class.

Favorite places on campus to hang out : Wharton Academic Research Building, Huntsman Hall, and the sky lounges in the College Houses, which she says “are definitely the better places to just chill, because they have little comfy booth areas, to watch the Center City skyline if you want to.”

Must-have in dorm room : “Emergency snacks,” for late-night study sessions when the dining hall is closed.

Dom Ciccotelli

Rising second-year majoring in biochemistry in the School of Arts & Sciences, from Parsippany, New Jersey

Ciccotelli remembers that when he got to Penn, he was overwhelmed by all the resources and clubs and “different things I wanted to do, but they’re all so spread out in many different areas,” he says. He went in many different directions and ended up not doing half the clubs by the end of the semester. Ciccotelli’s advice for incoming first-years is to—within their first few weeks here—take a breath, go over everything they’ve seen so far, and hone in on a few areas they’re really passionate about or where they want to have an impact.

Dom Ciccotelli standing in a stairwell

He remembers meeting a lot of new people at the Evening at the Philadelphia Museum of Art event, this year on Aug. 26 , and recommends attending events hosted by Resident Advisors. Ciccotelli found community in joining a fraternity, and a lot of his friends made friends through the Ivy League Model United Nations Conference (ILMUNC).

Can’t-miss events and activities : The Homecoming game, Spring Fling concerts featuring big-name acts, and celebrity guest speakers that students can see for free.

Favorite place to study : The Fisher Fine Arts Library, which Ciccotelli describes as “like a Hogwarts library.”

Rising second-year majoring in psychology in the School of Arts & Sciences, from Birmingham, Alabama

Yi advises incoming students to “try to do too much. So, when you first come onto campus, there’s a lot of things you can get involved in, so just taking advantage of all of those. And even if you’re a little nervous—you might not know anyone—just step out of your comfort zone, finding comfort in the fact that nobody else knows anybody else either.”

sarah yi sitting on a bench

She also has some advice for roommate cohabitation and conflict resolution: “When you first move in, try to make some ground rules: anything that you know for sure will bother you, so like cleanliness-wise, or whether they invite a lot of people over, food in the room, things like that,” she says. “If something’s bothering you, tell them as soon as possible, because if you just hold onto it in secret, it’s just going to pile up and it’s going to become worse later.”

Favorite place on campus : The BioPond in James G. Kaskey Memorial Park, which Yi calls an “escape from the city area. Overall, campus does have a lot of nature and green space, but the BioPond is really secluded. Just sitting there with the turtles and fish is very fun.”

Off-campus recommendations : Thrift shops in Center City and Old City, the Clark Park Farmers Market, and KPOT, a Korean barbecue place in South Philly.

Megan Laubacher

Rising fourth-year majoring in nursing in the School of Nursing, from Rochester, New York

Laubacher urges incoming first-years not to put a lot of pressure on themselves to meet their best friend during the first week of school, thinking that the person must become their closest friend for life. “Though that happens for some people, it isn’t the reality for most people,” she says.

megan laubbacher

Some of her friends instantly became besties with a roommate or hallmate, but many others found their closest friends in their second or third years on campus, she says. “The best part about Penn is that although it is seemingly a large school, you can connect with so many and makes Penn feel small. I have friends from all different circles on campus—whether it is my dance group, Kite and Key, the School of Nursing , or even just random friends of friends who I got close with—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

She also encourages everyone to take every opportunity on campus but to also know their limits.

“Don’t be hard on yourself if you can’t do everything—try every opportunity out, find what works for you, and learn how to say no when an opportunity is not the best fit for you.”

Favorite spot on campus tour: “Locust Walk, especially in the summer when all the trees have bloomed and the sun is peeking through them perfectly.”

Favorite class : “The ACA and Health Care Reform class with Ezekiel Emmanuel. I took it as a random class my freshman year but it was the best class I’ve ever taken … It even inspired me to minor in Health Services Management.”

Peyton Akiba

Rising second-year majoring in economics in the School of Arts & Sciences from Reston, Virginia

Working on time management skills early on is key to a successful freshman year, Akiba says.

peyton akiba sitting on the steps of a university building

“Time management is something that you’re going to have to learn how to do, especially if it wasn’t necessarily a skill that you’d had in high school,” he says, noting that most high schoolers have very structured days. “In college, there’s all this extra free time you need to learn how to balance.” For him, joining the sprint football team has helped him organize his time and add structure to his week.

Welcome, admitted Class of 2027

E. Whitney Soule, Vice Provost and Dean of Admissions

On Thursday, March 30th at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, the University of Pennsylvania announced admission decisions for Regular Decision applicants to the Class of 2027, the institution’s 271st class, to build a class of 2,400 outstanding students across Penn’s four undergraduate schools: the College of Arts & Sciences , the School of Engineering and Applied Science , the Wharton School , and the School of Nursing .

There were more than 59,000 applicants this year—the largest first-year applicant pool in Penn’s history—and students were admitted through QuestBridge Match, Early Decision, and Regular Decision rounds. We are proud to report that they collectively represent the most diverse group of admitted students in Penn’s history in terms of racial and ethnic background, socioeconomic diversity (including those who are eligible for Pell Grants), and those who are the first generation in their family to attend a four-year college or university.

This year, every applicant wrote a thank-you note to someone as part of their application to Penn. The applicants shared moments when someone else influenced them in a positive way. We read thank-you notes to family members—biological, step, adoptive, and foster. To the teachers out there, you’ve meant a lot to those in your classrooms! Strangers, you’ve left impressions that young people still remember strongly enough to share with us in their writing. The thank-you notes helped us see the students’ openness, receptivity, and generosity.

In addition to their gratitude, our admitted students shared examples of their intellectual enthusiasm and energy to explore socially and culturally. They wrote to us about how their everyday experiences connect to the classes they want to take at Penn, to the faculty whose work they admire, and to taking in the vibrancy of our home city of Philadelphia. And, speaking of Philadelphia, we cannot wait to welcome our Philadelphia students—one of the largest Philly cohorts we’ve admitted to Penn.

Our admitted students have demonstrated commitment in so many ways. They have been fine-tuning talents that go on display during a performance, leading clubs that support conversation around challenging topics, acting as student representatives in local government, working at their jobs, commuting long distances to school, fundraising for causes in which they find meaning, and supporting family members and managing household tasks.

While these students all share the qualities of academic ambition and inspired action, each one of them will create their own unique imprint and contribution at Penn. Congratulations to the Class of 2027. We can’t wait to welcome you in person!

President Liz Magill and Whitney Soule —as well as special guest Vauk from the Penn Vet Working Dog Center—congratulate the University’s newly admitted students in a video.

For media inquiries, contact Ron Ozio 215-898-8658 |  [email protected]

Akiba also encourages first-years to meet as many people as they can during the first few weeks on campus. “Leave your door open and knock on doors, because you truly never know who you might meet and what friendships might come out of it.”

Favorite spot on campus tour: “Definitely athletics. I’m a student athlete and I love explaining to prospective students how they might be able to get involved. Penn Park is such a beautiful and serene place, but at the same time, you see the Amtrak flying by and the hustle and bustle that is downtown Philadelphia across the river. It’s pretty cool.”

Must-do when selecting classes: “Check out Penn Course Review.”

Anika Tiwari

Rising senior majoring in biology in the School of Arts & Sciences from Saratoga, California

Tiwari says it’s good to remind yourself that there’s more to who you are than your academic achievements.

“A lot of times we get really caught up with being at school and we tie our academic achievements to our sense of self,” she says. “I’ve come to realize that if I’m facing an academic setback, it means that I’m going through a lot of personal growth even when I’m experiencing failure or coming back from a failure,” she says. “That’s something that I wish I realized earlier.”

anika tiwari

She also encourages everyone to use this time in their lives to get out of their comfort zones and “do something that feels crazy.”

“I auditioned for a sketch comedy troupe, and I had never done anything of the sort,” she says. “What I took away from that was not that I’m the funniest person in the world, but it certainly has helped me become braver and more accepting of awkward or weird or funny situations.”

Favorite place to hang out: “Wilcaf (Williams Cafe, the student-run cafe in Williams Hall). I love to get the matcha there.”

Favorite spot on campus tour: “Talking about student government at Houston Hall. I talk about it so much that my tours are always the last ones there.”

A 16-year-old was just fractions of a second shy of becoming youngest male U.S. track Olympian ever

Image: 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field - Day 4 Quincy Wilson

EUGENE, Ore. — Quincy Wilson, a 16-year-old from Bullis School outside Washington D.C., finished sixth with a time of 44.94 in Monday’s 400-meter final at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials.

Quincy Hall clocked in at 44:17 to take the top spot, and Michael Norman (44:41) and Chris Bailey (44:42) also claimed places on the team headed to Paris.

Though Wilson failed to make the team as an individual runner — and become the youngest male ever to do so — he will have a chance to be part of the U.S. 4x400 relay team.

Image: 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field - Day 4 Quincy Hall

The result does not take away from an incredible weekend for the high schooler after he set — and then bested — the world record for under-18 runners that stood for 42 years.

“I’ve never been this happy a day in my life when it comes to track,” Wilson said after he ran a 44.59 in the semifinals. “I’ve been working for this moment. That record I broke two days ago, that’s 42 years of nobody being able to break that record. I broke it twice in two days. It means a lot to me, because it means the hard work is paying off.”

Wilson, who only 19 days ago finished his sophomore year of high school, competed this week with some of the world’s fastest runners. Vernon Norwood is 32, twice Wilson’s age. Michael Norman, 26, finished fifth in the Tokyo Games.

“A 16-year-old is going out here competing like a true competitor,” Norman said. “He’s not letting the moment get too big. He’s living in the moment and competing, so it’s great to see young talents like himself elevate, push us to run a little bit faster and take us out of our comfort zone. He has a bright future in front of him as long as he stays grounded and focused.”

Wilson, at 5-feet-9 and 140 pounds, could have faded in that semifinal. At the final turn, he was in fifth place with a lot of ground to make up for down the stretch. He said “the race plan went out the window” at that point and he had to dig deep.

“Stay calm,” he said he told himself in that moment. “I didn’t get out the way that I wanted to, but like my coach said, the race starts at 300. Coming up from fifth to third, it means a lot. If you look at me, I’m not as strong, so it’s 100% heart inside.”

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are the greatest team.

During the latest installment of his and Jason Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast , the Chiefs All-Pro tight end explained that his London Eras Tour cameo — when he surprised fans on stage as one of Swift’s backup dancers at Wembley Stadium in June — was his idea, but the singer fine-tuned it to be the “perfect” moment.

The conversation began when Jason mentioned that “something magical happened” on stage and asked “whose idea was this” to have his little brother become part of the show.

“I initially mentioned it to Tay. I said, ‘How funny would it be if I rolled out on one of the bikes during 1989, that era [portion of the show],” Travis said on Wednesday’s episode.

“She started laughing and she was like, ‘Would you seriously be up for doing something like that?’ And I was just like, ‘I would love to do that! Are you kidding me? I’ve seen the show enough, you might as well put me to work here.’ And sure enough, she found the perfect part of the show for me to come in. There wasn’t a bike in case I ran into somebody else or the dancers. It was like the safest option.”

Travis shocked the crowd at Wembley Stadium last month when he appeared on stage during an introduction to Swift’s performance of “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart” — which Jason said is now his favorite Swift song.

The three-time Super Bowl champ, 34, who dressed in a tuxedo and wore a top hat, had an important role of carrying Swift, also 34, to a couch on the stage as the production transitioned for her “Tortured Poets Department” set.

“It’s such a fun, playful part of the show. It was the perfect area or perfect time for me to go up there and just be a ham and have some fun, not only with her, [the backup dancers], but the crowd, and really get everybody excited for the rest of the show. It was awesome … I had an absolute blast,” Travis said, adding that it was an honor to share the stage with Swift.

“You can do no wrong when Taylor’s on stage.”

Travis, who is known for his bubbly personality and party persona, joked the cameo was “very unlike me.”

“I don’t love going on stages,” he said, laughing.

Jason and his wife, Kylie Kelce, joined Travis in London and took in the show from the VIP tent.
