On this website our staff reviews some of our favorite road trips and popular travel destinations across North America.

Our travel guides include first-hand experiences, personal recommendations, and original photographs from our trips.

We love traveling around North America, and exploring the many exciting places and destinations that the USA and Canada have to offer. We also enjoy being out on the open roads, like cross-country trips on Route 66 The Mother Road.

From the Beartooth Highway to the Blue Ridge Parkway , from Utah Scenic Byway 12 to the Trans Canada Highway, it is always a fun driving adventure.

Recent trips include driving the Going to the Sun Road in Montana, Trail Ridge Road in Colorado, and the Loneliest Road in America in Nevada .

In 2019 we made a return visit to Victoria BC , one of our favorite destinations in Canada, along with stays in Banff and Lake Louise .

This website also features travel information and reviews on the most popular national parks such as  Great Smoky Mountains National Park and other museums and monuments, such as Mount Rushmore . And be sure to check out our newly published Alaska Travel Guide.

Popular Road Trips on Scenic Byways

"The Mother Road " stretched 2,448 miles from Chicago, heading south through Illinois and Missouri. From there Route 66 turned in a more westward direction through Oklahoma and Texas, with the final stretches in New Mexico and Arizona before ending in Los Angeles.

The Blue Ridge Parkway meanders for 469 miles through Virginia and North Carolina, offering endless outdoor recreational opportunities. It provides a slow-paced and relaxing drive revealing stunning long-range vistas and close-up views of the rugged mountains and landscapes of the Appalachian Highlands.

The Beartooth Highway, is one of the most scenic drives in the U.S., with views of the Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains, and open high alpine plateaus. The road features glacial lakes, forests, valleys, waterfalls and a variety of wildlife. It traverses a series of steep switchbacks at the Montana-Wyoming border to the 10,947 ft Beartooth Pass.

US 50 crosses the central portion of Nevada, from the west side of the state near Lake Tahoe to the east side near Great Basin National Park.

The Nevada portion of U.S. 50 was named "The Loneliest Road in America" by Life magazine in July 1986.

U.S. Highway 550 in Colorado is a two-lane mountainous road. It is one of only two north–south U.S. Highways in Colorado which runs west of the Continental Divide.

The 25-mile section of U.S. 550 from Silverton to Ouray is frequently called the Million Dollar Highway .

Trail Ridge Road is a paved, 48 mile long scenic highway in Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. It connects the park entrances in Grand Lake and Estes Park . The road features switchbacks and hairpin curves, and rises to a height of 12,183 feet above sea level. The road is open seasonally in non-winter months.

The Moki Dugway is a steep, gravel three mile road located in southeastern Utah, traversing 1,200 feet from the top of Cedar Mesa to the broad valley below. The road is actually part of Utah Highway 261, most of which is paved.

Travel to National Parks

Yellowstone National Park is the world's first national park. It is located mostly in Wyoming, and spans 63 miles north to south, and 54 miles east to west. Geysers, hiking, camping, bison, elk and more!

Smoky Mountains Park spans over 800 square miles in Tennessee and North Carolina, and is one of the most pristine natural areas in the Eastern part of the United States. An endless variety of outdoor activities!

Rocky Mountain National Park is located in Colorado, and consists of 415 square miles of spectacular mountain environments. A highlight of the park is Trail Ridge Road which crests at over 12,000 feet. The park also features over 300 miles of hiking trails, lakes and wildlife.

Grand Canyon National Park is located in Arizona, and is centered on a Colorado River canyon that is 277 river miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and a mile deep.

The Burr Trail takes the adventurous traveler into some of Utah's most beautiful and extraordinary country, with views of the Henry Mountains, the colorfully contorted Waterpocket Fold, red Circle Cliffs, and Long Canyon.

The famous Burr Trail switchbacks rise steeply up through the canyon. The trail drops nearly 800 feet in about a mile, while zigging and zagging down the Waterpocket Fold.

Hoonah is situated on the northwest shore of Chichagof Island across Icy Strait from the entrance to Glacier Bay on Alaska’s scenic Inside Passage.

Known as the Little City with a Big Heart, Hoonah is a family-oriented and closely-knit community of friendly and caring people. Hoonah is about 40 air miles west of the Alaska Capitol in Juneau.

With a perfect growing climate, Victoria is known internationally as the City of Gardens. The Butchart Gardens, just north of Victoria in Brentwood Bay, are internationally known and appreciated, and host over a million visitors annually.

The Butchart Gardens feature a million bedding plants in over 900 varieties.

Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park is located in extreme southeastern Utah, on the northern border of Arizona.

The valley is host to towering sandstone rock formations that have been sculpted over time and soar 400 to 1,000 feet above the valley floor. Combined with the surrounding mesas, buttes, and desert environment, Monument Valley is one of the natural wonders of the world.

The United States is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the world and some of the most recognizable icons on the planet . Many of the top attractions in the United States are bucket list destinations, drawing visitors from around the world.

Compiling a list of places to see is step one. But keep in mind, given the size of the United States, most people plan their trips to a specific region, be it the East Coast, the Southwest, the beaches of Florida or California , or outlying regions like Hawaii and Alaska.

You may want to see the city sights, or head out to the top parks and natural areas in the US . In some cases, you can easily combine the two if you plan a day trip or two.

Plenty of options await you, with incredible sights sprinkled across the country. For anyone in the enviable position of having unlimited time and resources, these are the top attractions to include on your US itinerary.

This incredible natural attraction is one of the most visited places in the United States. Carved out by the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon cuts deep into the landscape, creating dramatic cliff walls and ledges. Visitors standing on the rim of the canyon can see down to the canyon floor a mile below, and look out over the ridges and cliffs that run as far as the eye can see.

The South Rim , about 4.5 hours by car from Las Vegas, is the most visited section of Grand Canyon National Park. This is where you'll find a large visitor center, regular bus service along the Rim in the high season, and a walkway that runs along the canyon with numerous viewing points and platforms. Several wonderful hikes , including the Bright Angel Trail, leave from here.

The Skywalk , a glass bridge leading out over the edge of the Grand Canyon is another popular attraction. It is located at Eagle Point, on the West Rim . This area is about a four-hour drive from the South Rim, but usually less than a 2.5-hour drive from Las Vegas. If you are planning a day trip from Las Vegas, this area is a good option

The North Rim, which also has lookout areas, provides a different perspective. This section of the park is less visited and has limited access from November to May due to snow and winter conditions.

Situated along the Canada-US border, Niagara Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in the world . The water from Lake Erie flows into Lake Ontario over these massive waterfalls, known for the great quantity of water that is constantly tumbling over the vertical drop.

Niagara Falls is actually a set of three falls: It consists of the largest section, known as Horseshoe Falls, with a drop of 187 feet; a second section on the American side of the river, known as the American Falls, with a drop of 89 feet; and a much thinner section located next to the American Falls, known as Bridal Veil Falls, with a drop of 78 feet.

Views are good on both sides of the river, but the Canadian side gives a very different perspective and is worth a visit if you don't mind crossing the border into Canada.

Summer is the most popular time to visit Niagara Falls, when the weather is warm, gardens are in bloom, and wandering around is pleasant. Winter provides a unique opportunity to see the snow-covered shores and ice-covered railings, street signs, and trees. It's truly a winter wonderland.

On clear days, the plume of mist rising from Niagara Falls can be seen from as far away as the CN Tower in downtown Toronto, Canada, on the opposite shore of Lake Ontario.

A universal symbol of freedom, the Statue of Liberty is America's most familiar icon and the largest statue in the world . Standing proudly in New York Harbor, visitors can admire the statue from various points around the city, particularly Battery Park, or take a ferry right to the statue.

For people who plan to go out to the statue, options include grounds tickets, pedestal tickets, or crown tickets, which allow different levels of access to the site. One of the best options is to take a sightseeing tour and see both the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

The White House is the official residence of the President of the United States, and should be on the top of your list of things to see in Washington . This historic structure has been the home of every president except George Washington. Lafayette Park is on the north side of the White House; beyond is a pedestrian-only zone, full of interesting characters, and an excellent spot to get a great photo.

It was originally built by James Hoban in 1792 and, after being burned down by British forces in 1814, was rebuilt in 1818. Tours of the White House are free, but reservations must be made a minimum of three weeks in advance. Strict security rules are always in effect.

This mega amusement park in Orlando is the top family attraction in America, and has been catering to both young and old for decades. Opened in 1971, Walt Disney World has managed to maintain its relevance and its allure for children and even many adults throughout the years.

Walt Disney World Resort encompasses not only the various theme parks, it also includes water parks, Downtown Disney with shopping and theaters, and much more, from fine dining to golf. This is a place where you can spend a day or a week.

If you feel the need for a bit of sand and surf, the beaches of Florida's Atlantic coast are only an hour away.

Home to the most popular beach in the Hawaiian Islands and possibly the most famous beach in the Pacific, Waikiki has been a tourist destination for over a century. Today this area is a cross between tropical paradise and modern city.

Relaxing on this beautiful stretch of sand with palm trees blowing in the wind will certainly let you know you are in the tropics, but the high-rise buildings and busy street in behind are a reminder that you are not far from civilization. Shopping, dining, surfing, and sunbathing are all part of what makes this small section of Oahu so popular with tourists of all ages from all parts of the world.

Walking along the Las Vegas Strip, the main street leading through the city past the mega resorts, is like strolling through an amusement park for adults. Recreations of the New York skyline, the Eiffel Tower, the canals of Venice, and many more foreign sites line this famous street.

Beginning at one end with the Luxor Hotel, designed in a pyramid shape, a walk down the street will reveal an erupting volcano and dancing fountains, while inside the resorts are all kinds of oddities and entertainment. Many of the best things to see and do in Las Vegas are sights that can be seen for free.

One of the main attractions in Las Vegas is the constant lineup of shows. World-famous singers looking to settle down turn to Las Vegas as a home base, where they perform regularly. Unique performing groups from magic to comedy and acrobatics can also be found here nightly.

When you've had enough of the nightlife and city lights, you can still explore the nearby attractions on a day trip from Las Vegas . See nearby Death Valley National Park, Hoover Dam, or Valley of Fire State Park. Explore the desert on hiking trails around Las Vegas , some of which are just minutes from downtown.

One of America's most loved parks, Yosemite National Park is one of the best places to visit in California , particularly for nature lovers. Famous sights, like the incredible granite domes of El Capitan and Half Dome, have to be seen in person to fully appreciate their grandeur. The massive waterfalls that tumble off sheer cliffs from mountain snowfall or sudden summer rainstorms are another of the park's highlights.

Yosemite National Park is full of activity-based things to do that include hiking, climbing, walking, and horseback riding. Hiking trails in Yosemite lead to some of the most scenic areas and are a good way to escape the crowds at lookouts.

For those less inclined to be physically active, the sheer natural beauty of Yosemite can be enjoyed from a picnic table over a leisurely home-packed lunch. You can also see the highlights on a driving tour through the park.

Accommodation is limited in the park to several lodges and a number of very nice campgrounds . Outside the gates, more options are available.

Arching across San Francisco Bay, joining San Francisco and Marin County, the Golden Gate Bridge has been a California icon since it was built in the 1930s. Contrasting with the blue water, the bridge's orangish-red color is an aesthetic accent that brings a unique quality to the city.

It also has a unique presence when it's shrouded in fog with just the peaks of the main towers projecting through the low-lying cloud. The bridge is approximately two miles long and part of Hwy 101 or SR 1. If the day is clear, one of the best viewing spots is on Conzelman Road, located in Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Bustling Times Square, famous for its flashing billboards, New Year's Eve count down, and constant throngs of people, lies at the heart of Midtown Manhattan. This intersection, in normal times, is really about the energy one feels when standing on the corner as taxi cabs rush by and lights flash overhead, rather than any individual site on the square.

While it is an interesting place to visit during the day, it is probably best seen at night to experience the full impact.

Boston's Freedom Trail is a 2.5-mile walking route that leads past some of the city's most important historical attractions. A line of red bricks, inlaid in the sidewalk marks the route, making it an easy way for tourists to find their way around.

Information on the trail and the sites can be found at the Visitors Center in the Boston Common , which is a good place to start your tour. Sites along the Freedom Trail include the State House, Old State House, the Old Granary Burying Ground, Old City Hall, Faneuil Hall, Paul Revere House, and many more.

Yellowstone National Park is home to a huge ancient volcano, which has resulted in a dramatic landscape and awesome natural phenomena. Yellowstone National Park was the world’s first national park, set aside in 1872 to preserve the vast number of geysers, hot springs, and other thermal areas, as well as to protect the incredible wildlife and rugged beauty of the area. Yellowstone lies on top of a gigantic hotspot where light, hot, molten mantle rock rises towards the surface. Subsequently, the park contains half of all the world’s known geothermal features, with more than 10,000 examples of geysers and hot springs.

The most famous geyser in the park is Old Faithful Geyser. It is one of the most predictable geographical features on earth erupting almost every 91 minutes. The largest hot spring in Yellowstone and the third largest in the world is the Grand Prismatic Spring. The vivid colors in the spring are the result of pigmented bacteria that grow around the edges of the mineral-rich water. The bacteria produce colors ranging from green to red. The center of the pool is sterile due to extreme heat.

In addition to all the geothermal features Yellowstone is also home to one of the finest megafauna wildlife habitats in North America. Black bears, grizzly bears, deer, elk, bison and wolves can all be found within the park borders.

You wouldn’t think a city in the middle of the desert in Nevada would be as popular as it is, but it’s thanks to the cavalcade of casinos here that Las Vegas is so famous. The most well-known casinos themselves are practically household names: Caesar’s Palace, MGM Grand, the Bellagio. In addition to gambling, show girls and lavish performances, Las Vegas offers plenty more to suit people of all ages and interests. On the main street called the Strip, there are the Bellagio’s impressive fountain shows, a replica of the Eiffel Tower and of an Egyptian pyramid, among other landmarks.

Golfers will be happy to know there are more than 55 golf courses in and around Las Vegas. Just outside the city are state parks offering rock climbing and hiking trails. Also nearby is Lake Mead, which provides a variety of water sports.

Set on the tip of a peninsula, San Francisco is a beautiful city in northern California that is famous for a lot (and we really mean a lot) of things. Undoubtedly, the Golden Gate Bridge is the city’s number one attraction . Tourists can drive, bike ride or walk across this famous suspension bridge to admire and photograph stunning views. Another of the city’s most prominent landmarks are its historic cable cars, which present a memorable way to experience the steep inclines and main tourist attractions.

San Francisco is a city rich in history and culture known for its lovely Victorian homes and ethnic neighborhoods, of which Chinatown is the most famous with its colorful array of shops and markets. Located in northern Arizona, this massive natural wonder was carved by the Colorado River over a period of several million years and now measures 277 miles (446 km) long, over a mile (1.6 km) deep and up to 18 miles (29 km) wide. It is not the deepest or the longest canyon in the world but the overwhelming size and colorful landscape offers visitor vistas that are hard to match.

Managed and protected by the Grand Canyon National Park , the Grand Canyon is contained within the national park as well as within the Hualapai and Havasupai Indian Reservations. Awe-inspiring landscapes, wildlife viewing, historic sites and adventurous activities are just a few of the reasons that make the Grand Canyon one of the world’s most famous natural wonders.

The Canyon is divided by two main sections, the popular South Rim and the remote North Rim. As the most accessible part for tourists, the South Rim features many historic sites such as the El Tovar Hotel, Grand Canyon Railway Depot and the Desert View Watchtower. Also in the South Rim is the Grand Canyon Village where many tourists can find ample lodging.

There are numerous well-marked trails to try out, including the South Kaibab Trail. If you want a really long hike, go for the Rim-to-Rim Trail but don’t forget to pack plenty of water, this is an unrelenting desert climate, after all.

One of the most popular attractions in the Canyon is Havasu Falls, a spectacular waterfall that plummets 120 feet (37 meters) into a natural swimming pool of turquoise water. Other sights and experiences opportunities in the Canyon include whitewater rafting, jeep tours, helicopter rides and the Skywalk, a glass sightseeing structure extending 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) over the rim of the Grand Canyon.

By all means, visit Lexington, KY. Come during the Keeneland spring or summer meets. You’ve never visited a more economical and beautiful racetrack. Lots of hotels in all price ranges. Visit a horse farm. Visit multiple distilleries on the Bourbon Trail. Don’t miss the home of Mary Todd Lincoln, right downtown; tours are economical and high quality. Ride out through the horse farms. Take a daytrip to lovely little Midway for shops and independently owned restaurants.

It really depends on what you are looking for but Santa Fe NM, Tuscon AZ and Austin TX are great places to visit. And how did Savannah get picked over Charleston SC? Almost any American would pick Charleston over Savannah. A couple of these places baffle me as to how they made this list. Atlanta? Denver? Denver is just a place to fly into to go somewhere else. Lynchburg VA and Lexington KY are beautiful, fun places, to name a few. I have been to 47 of the 50 states. I am very confident in my comment.

I think one of the most interesting cities in America is Memphis, TN. From Rendezvous Ribs to Beale Street and BB King, to the Peabody hotel and on to Elvis’s Grace Land, there is more to do in this city than most people realize.

@Rigo, She didn’t mention Orlando? Keep your bias to yourself, she said New Orleans. There’s also a lot of stuff in Orlando you won’t get in LA. Less traffic, cleaner air, generally people are not as rude, hotter, Disney in Orlando may not be the ‘original’ but is far far superior to Disney in Cali as is Universal.

Don’t worry Jess you can visit Disneyland(the original), California Adventure(across from Disneyland, and part of it), Universal Studios Hollywood(also original) and even the original six flags magic mountain while in Los Angeles, even San Diego its just an hour and a half drive from Los Angeles you can’t get all that in Orlando. Las Vegas is a short 4hrs drive through the Mojave desert rent a car it might be cheaper and on the way there you can stop at calico ghost town. Good luck and welcome to California enjoy your stay 😉

I totally agree with this list! Can’t believe I’ll be going to four cities in this list in about a year. Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco and New York City. Flying all the way from Malaysia. Feelin’ so blessed, but I’ll have to wait for the visa exemption first. Thinking of going to New Orleans if possible, but I’m short of cash. I’ve only got enough for the four cities; tough luck for me.

Every U.S. state has many and various tourist attractions . However, specific U.S. states have become more popular traveler destinations. The following ten states are the most visited in the United States: California, Florida, Nevada, Texas, New York, Virginia, South Carolina, Arizona, Georgia, Hawaii. These U.S. states are some of their particular attractions, and their features are accented below.

1. California

California is the country’s most populated state and is a significant agricultural state, providing about 99% of some crops. 

About 50% of the state’s area is government-owned and committed to the conservation of nature. Millions of travelers crowd to California to visit the national monuments, historical places, parks, and beaches. California’s most popular tourist destinations are Disneyland, which is visited by almost 15 million people annually. Other popular attractions in the state are:

This is completely incorrect information. This is a list based on population not on how many people travel there every year. Sorry but Maine is in the top ten for destination hot spots for vacationers. To be honest I wish it was closer to 44.

So, about five to six million years ago, the Colorado River more or less established its route through the Arizona desert. Glacial erosion, meltwater runoff and the simultaneous counter effect of the land slowly rising—as the weight of the glaciers was reduced—ultimately resulted in one of the most spectacular natural wonders on our modest, little blue-green planet. The Grand Canyon is 277 miles long, varies between four and 18 miles wide and has a maximum depth of 6,000 feet. 10.  Kennedy Space Center | Orlando, FL

If you’ve always dreamed of working in outer space, this is your chance to see and touch models of space shuttles, rockets, satellites, tools and mission control rooms. The simulators and explorable modules will make you feel like an actual astronaut—though if you wonder just how much the experience compares to the real deal, you can meet one of those brave scientists in person at the Astronaut Encounter Theater.

11.  Golden Gate Bridge | San Francisco, CA

Name a more iconic bridge—we'll wait. There's a reason the Golden Gate Bridge is so famous. With its vibrant international orange color and spanning from San Francisco to the Marin headlines, stands as a symbol of the West. There are countless ways to take in the stunning bridge views: head to a beach (try Baker Beach), head to the new Presidio Tunnel Tops Park, go to a vista overlook, or get up close and personal by crossing the bridge by foot or bike. A trip to San Francisco isn't complete until you get a picture with the Golden Gate in the background.

12.  Little Havana | Miami, FL

After decades of serving as a home to Cuban exiles, Little Havana has become a must-visit destination in its own right. While out on the town, throw back rum-spiked Caribbean drinks and dance the night away to live rumba and salsa music. The food here is legendary : Cuban sandwiches, Colombian arepas, savory tacos and other Latin American dishes will leave your mouth watering.

13.  Hoover Dam | Nevada

Perhaps the best example of America’s building prowess in the first half of the 20th century, this dam remains a bewildering feat of engineering and labor. Construction started in 1931 and took five years, 5,000 workers and 3.25 million cubic yards of concrete to complete. Today, you can tour the dam and its power plant to learn more about the facility’s history and unique features.

14.  The Gateway Arch | St. Louis, MO

Not only is St. Louis’s premiere attraction the world’s largest arch, but it is also the tallest man-made monument in the Western Hemisphere. Standing proud at 630ft tall, this metal beauty was built in the mid-20th century as a monument to America’s westward expansion and is meant to signify the connection of the East to the West, honoring the country’s first pioneers. To fully understand this architectural wonder, snag a ticket to the Gateway Arch Tram and ride to the top of the monument.

15.  Mammoth Cave Park | Kentucky

With more than 400 miles explored, the world’s longest known cave system (by far) is in Kentucky and it welcomes any visitor not afraid of the dark or the damp. See the dramatic passages lined with geological formations that might inspire your inner explorer during a guided tour by a park ranger. The tours vary in length but they always include historic details about how the cave system was formed and how people and other creatures have interacted with it. After several hours in the caverns, appreciate the beauty of the clear waters and the untouched nature of the area while on a bike ride or canoe adventure.

16.  Space Needle | Seattle, WA

Like many famous landmarks, Seattle’s iconic Space Needle was built for the World’s Fair, back in 1962 when the theme was “The Age of Space.” Today, it remains one of the most recognizable and photographed landmarks worldwide for its futuristic design. Standing at 605 feet tall, visitors can take an elevator up to the tower’s saucer-shaped top floor with 360-degree views. Recent renovations resulted in a multi-level viewing experience with floor-to-ceiling glass viewing that will make your stomach drop.

17.  Navy Pier | Chicago, IL

Clearly, one of the Midwest’s most popular destinations, Navy Pier is visited by roughly nine million people each year. From excellent shopping opportunities to eateries and, of course, Lake Michigan, the destination offers something for everyone. The little ones will be delighted by the Chicago Children’s Museum , while grown-ups should head to the award-winning Chicago Shakespeare Theater . 

18.  Alcatraz | San Francisco, CA

This formidable fortress in the middle of San Francisco Bay was converted from a lighthouse station to a military prison in the 1870s. However, it found genuine acclaim after being upgraded to a maximum security prison in 1934, home to the early 20th century’s most notorious criminals. Today, the tiny island is only accessible to the public via a ferry from Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing. You should plan to spend about three hours soaking up the amazing history and during that time, a self-guided audio cellhouse tour narrated by former inmates and guards will fill you in on harrowing escape attempts, prison riots and the 19-month-long occupation of the site by Native Americans demanding reparation for broken treaties in 1969. 

19.  Venice Beach | Venice, CA

Wedged in between Marina del Ray and Santa Monica, Venice Beach is one of the biggest draws for visitors to Los Angeles. It's firmly established as the bohemian epicenter of Southern California and you won't find a higher concentration of recognizable landmarks from film and TV anywhere else in Los Angeles. At weekends, during the summer, it gets pretty packed, but that just adds to the slightly chaotic atmosphere. Street acts add a carnival feel to the proceedings, plus, of course, the beach is just a few feet away. Try Hinano Cafe  for a great burger in a back-to-basics, spit 'n sawdust setting and the newly refurbished Pier House for classic cocktails as the sun sets over the Pacific.

20.  Alamo Mission | San Antonio, TX

Most Americans know the phrase 'Remember the Alamo' even if they’re not exactly sure what transpired at the 18th-century Spanish mission. Later secularized and used as a fortress, 1836 the Alamo was the site of a bloody and decisive battle of the Texas Revolution between Texas’s early Anglo settlers and Mexico (the latter won). One of the most visited historic sites in the country today, the fort welcomes about three million visitors annually.

Start with the 11-mile Crater Rim Road, which goes around Kilauea Caldera and hits the major sites, like Devastation Trail and the Thurston Lava Tube. You can also visit the still active Halema'uma'u crater, which is supposedly inhabited by the Hawaiian goddess of fire, Pele. 

Idaho: Craters of the Moon National Monument

What to do at the Craters of the Moon National Monument: A cross-country road trip will take you through a lot of unbelievable, other-worldly landscapes. But none is more "other-worldly" than the Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho. It's like being on another planet, right here on Earth.

The monument was formed from lava flows that created islands of sagebrush and singer cones. The result? Something that looks like you're actually on the moon. Drive the 7-mile Loop Road to see caves or hike the trails. If you have time, walk the Devil's Orchard Trail. For those with even more time, the Broken Top Loop trail is particularly special, as is the 8-mile Wilderness Trail.

Illinois: The Art Institute of Chicago

Indiana: Indiana Dunes National Park

What to do at Indiana Dunes National Park: With 15 miles of Lake Michigan shorefront, Indiana Dunes National Park creates a unique landscape that you’d never envision being in the heart of the Midwest. No matter the time of year, the national park has something active to do, from swimming in the lake to cross-country skiing. In the fall, hit the Calumet and Porter Brickyard bike trails, or spend the night at the Dunewood Campground.

Iowa: Effigy Mounds National Monument

What to do at Effigy Mounds National Monument: Effigy Mounds National Monument is a collection of more than 200 preserved mounds of earth that were constructed by Native Americans. They take the shape of many different animals, including mammals, birds and reptiles.

Today, the mounds are part of the National Park Service, and tourists can enjoy the many hiking trails nearby as well as the formal museum exhibit that displays the many Native American artifacts that were found at the site. 

Kansas: Sedgwick County Zoo

Location: Wichita, Kansas

What to do at Sedgwick County Zoo: Home to more than 3,000 animals, the Sedgwick County Zoo is one of the best attractions in Kansas. The animals are grouped geographically in exhibits that range from Africa and Asia to the Tropics, Downing Gorilla Forest, South America/Australia and the Slawson Family Tiger Trek, among others.

Visitors can participate in some of the zoo's special Wild Encounters, too. Go behind the scenes at the Cessna Penguin Cove to learn about Humboldt penguins, or head to the horse exhibit to learn about the horses and donkeys. In the spring and summer months, guests can experience the Elephant Encounter as well, which involves meeting an elephant and learning about how the zookeepers care for them.

Kentucky: Mammoth Cave National Park

What to do at Mammoth Cave National Park: Did you know that Kentucky is home to one of the longest natural cave systems in the world? Mammoth Cave National Park is home to a cave system that spans 412 miles and is home to more than 100 animal species — and millennia of human history, to boot. Visitors of the park can take a cave tour to get up close and personal with the monumental stalactites and stalagmites.

Pro tip: The extended tour is more than two hours and covers about 2 miles of walking. You can also explore above ground on the Cedar Sink Trail, which is a 1-mile loop, 300 feet above the bottom of the cave. Fishing, paddling and camping are also popular within the park.

Louisiana: Jackson Square

Location: New Orleans, Louisiana

Best time to visit: February to May

What to do at Jackson Square: Driving through the Big Easy means that you'll have many notable sites and experiences on the checklist. But it all should begin at Jackson Square, the gateway to the French Quarter of this centuries-old southern city. The square is anchored by the St. Louis Cathedral.

The energy in the square is palpable year-round, from brass bands and street artists to quirky tourists and locals. On either end of the square are the Pontalba Buildings, which were built in the mid-19th century. Stop by the Cabildo as well, which was once the seat of local government and is today part of the state museum of Louisiana. 

Maine: Acadia National Park

Location: Bar Harbor, Maine

What to do at Acadia National Park: Acadia National Park holds the title as the first national park on the East Coast. So, when you're covering the New England portion of your road trip, a stop here is a must. The 46,000-acre park features the tallest mountain on the East Coast as well as lakes, ponds, beaches, forests and miles of coastline.

Start with Park Loop Road, which is the main scenic drive through the park, and is peppered with pull-offs, and then scale Cadillac Mountain, which sits at 1,530 feet. Other scenic highlights include the Bass Harbor Head and the Wild Gardens of Acadia.

Maryland: Baltimore Museum of Art

Location: Baltimore, Maryland

What to do at Baltimore Museum of Art: What started as a museum with a single painting has flourished into one of the great collections of art in the world, home to 95,000 works that run the gamut from the art of ancient Egypt to the masterpieces of today.

Opened in 1914, the museum has the largest holding of Henri Matisse's work as well as paintings and jewelry from Africa, more than 1,000 objects from Asia, 28 mosaic pavements from Antioch, a collection of Medieval and Renaissance paintings and so much more.

Massachusetts: Fenway Park

Location: Boston, Massachusetts

What to do at Fenway Park: If there is one thing Bay Staters can agree on, it's the Red Sox. So when you're passing through Massachusetts, and Boston in particular, it's only proper to pay homage at the state's house of worship — Fenway Park.

Home to the Boston Red Sox, Fenway Park opened in 1912 and welcomes nearly 40,000 fans each year. Obviously, if it's baseball season, catching a game at the park is a must. But if you're visiting in the off-season, you can still visit for a stadium tour.

Michigan: Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

What to do at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore: Lake Michigan is simply beautiful, no matter which angle you look at it from. But if you happen to be visiting from Michigan proper, you'll want to make a stop at Sleeping Bear Dunes, a National Lakeshore that features miles of sand beach, towering cliffs, forests, lakes and wildlife.

Some of the best things to do include fishing in one of the many lakes, visiting the nearby Manitou Islands, hiking more than 100 miles of trails or driving the scenic shore route that rewards with some of the park's most impressive views.

Minnesota: North Shore Scenic Drive

Location: Duluth, Minnesota

What to do on the North Shore Scenic Drive: Lake Superior's North Shore is among one of the most beautiful coastal scenes in the nation. Located along the stretch of northern Minnesota, the North Shore features eight state parks, and the scenic route has been dubbed an All-American Road. Location: Ocean Springs, Mississippi

What to do at Gulf Islands National Seashore: Exploring the Mississippi coast of the Gulf of Mexico is one of the best ways to soak up this beautiful maritime area that spans 160 miles between Mississippi and Florida. Within the park are barrier islands, historic forts, bayous and sea forests.

Soak up the warm, tropical weather on a bike ride through the Gulf Islands, or grab your binoculars to catch a glimpse of the nearly 300 species of birds that call the area home. If you want to save on accommodations, why not spend a night camping on the beach?

While visiting, explore the more than 700 miles of hiking trails, bike paths and campgrounds. If visiting in the warm months, a drive along the Going to the Sun Road is an absolute must. This scenic drive takes you through the highlights of the park as well as to many of its trailheads. Get there early — it's one of the most popular parks in the country.

Nebraska: Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium

What to do at Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium: One of the best zoos in the country, Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is a perfect way to spend a day when cruising through the state of Nebraska. It has more than 130 acres and is home to more than 900 species of animals.

Start at the Desert Dome, which will likely be the first landmark you see as you enter the zoo. It has the world's largest indoor desert and has plants and wildlife from Africa, Australia and the U.S. You can go the opposite direction and visit Glacier Bay Landing for Alaskan-themed wilderness, or visit the sea lions in their 275,000-gallon pool. Other exhibits include the Lied Jungle, Kingdoms of the Night and Scott Aquarium.

New Jersey: Cape May Lighthouse

What to do at the Cape May Lighthouse: The Jersey Shore is so much more than fist pumps and hair gel. Sure, there is some of that. But 141-miles of coastline that runs from Perth Amboy to Cape May has so much more to offer. Speaking of Cape May, the eponymous lighthouse that sits at the tip of the state is one of the state's top icons. It was built in 1859 and continues to operate today.

While you're in Cape May, be sure to explore the historic district, which is the country's best-preserved 19th-century seashore community. Of course, if it's summer, you'll want to spend some time at the beach as well. The beaches in New Jersey are some of the best on the East Coast — no matter what anyone else says!

New Mexico: Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Location: Carlsbad, New Mexico

What to do at Carlsbad Caverns National Park: Tucked in the Guadalupe Mountains of New Mexico, Carlsbad Caverns National Park opened in the 1930s. This mysterious network of more than 100 underground caves is ridged with stalactites, while the Big Room underground chamber is 4,000-feet long, 625-feet wide and 255-feet high at its highest point. It is the largest chamber in North America.

Tack on a King's Palace Tour for an additional 1.5-hour, ranger-led exploration of the four other underground chambers as well as cave formations and the deepest point of the cave, which sits more than 800 feet below the surface.

New York: Central Park

What to do at Central Park: It's every New Yorker's personal backyard — and what a backyard it is! Smack in the center of Manhattan, Central Park is the most important park in the city, spanning 843 acres. The park was created in 1858 and is completely man-made, meaning entirely landscaped.

North Carolina: The Biltmore Estate

What to do at The Biltmore Estate: North Carolina's funky mountain town of Asheville is home to the famous Biltmore Estate. It was built for George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895 and is one of the best examples of Gilded Age mansions. The opulent and extravagant mansion is open year-round for tours, whether you're strolling the gardens in the summer or marveling at the stunning Christmas decorations. The grounds are woven with nature trails, as well as horseback riding paths.

Of course, the town of Asheville itself is also certainly worth an exploration for its bohemian, artsy vibes, great restaurants and galleries.

North Dakota: Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Location: Medora, North Dakota

What to do at Theodore Roosevelt National Park: North Dakota is known for its vast expanses of prairie land as far as the eye can see. But that doesn't mean you need to completely bypass the state. Ohio: Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

Oklahoma: National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum

What to do at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum: If you love American history and tales of the Wild West, then you must make a stop at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. The museum has more than 28,000 artifacts that date back to the days of the Old West.

It also has one of the world's biggest collections of rodeo photographs, saddlery and rodeo trophies. The museum has rotating exhibits as well, like the history behind Native American tattooing, traditional cowboy arts, paintings and much more.

Oregon: Crater Lake National Park

What to do at Crater Lake National Park: Oregon is one of the most dramatically beautiful states in the country. You have the rugged sea on one side and lush mountains and forests on the other. In between is beautiful pinot noir wine country as well. But the southern edge of Oregon is also home to Crater Lake National Park, centered around a massive lake that formed in the middle of a dormant volcano.

The best way to see the crater is to take the scenic loop around the entire edge, which opens up to dramatic vistas all the way across to the other side. This is one of the deepest lakes in the world as well, with a maximum depth of nearly 2,000 feet.

Pennsylvania: Philadelphia Museum of Art

Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

What to do at the Philadelphia Museum of Art: Opened in 1876 for the Centennial Exposition, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is one of the top art museums in the country and one of the main reasons to visit Philadelphia.

If you're on a road trip, you'll likely be on a time schedule, so you can make the most of your time at the museum with a visit to the New European Galleries for the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, followed by the galleries of arms and armor or the American art collection. You can also see architecture from around the world, like a Japanese teahouse or a Gilded Age drawing room.

Rhode Island: Historic Federal Hill

What to do at Historic Federal Hill: Federal Hill is one of the more historic neighborhoods in the city of Providence. It was known for its high concentration of Italian immigrants and is still a great place to explore the Italian markets and bakeries.

Stop by DePasquale Square to hear live music, or visit the many parks along Atwells Avenue. Historic Federal Hill is a fantastic spot for shopping, dining and browsing the art galleries as well as one of the best spots to get in touch with Providence's history.

South Carolina: Joe Riley Waterfront Park

Location: Charleston, South Carolina

Where to stay: Renaissance Charleston Historic District Hotel

What to do at the Joe Riley Waterfront Park: Charleston is packed with Southern charm and history. It is known for its restaurant scene, architecture and waterfront location. So, when you're passing through South Carolina, it is absolutely a must to stop at the Joe Riley Waterfront Park.

This 8-acre park is one of the most beloved landmarks in the state. It features a 1,250 pier that extends into Charleston Harbor. The park is marked by its two fountains, but it is also known for its epic views. It is also perfectly located so that you can walk to other noteworthy attractions in Charleston. 

South Dakota: Badlands National Park

Location: Wall, South Dakota

Where to stay: The Rushmore Hotel & Suites, BW Premier Collection

What to do at Badlands National Park: If you're heading west from Minnesota or east from Montana, you have a lot of grasslands to cover. South Dakota is a very large state, with not a ton of attractions. But that doesn't mean it's any less worthy of a visit, especially if you have Badlands National Park on your bucket list.

The dramatic landscape of Badlands National Park is made this way thanks to its layered rock formations and deep canyons. It's home to bison, bighorn sheep and prairie dogs, and is one of the most visually impressive sights in the country. Drive the Badlands Loop Road, which opens up to several lookout points and is the best way to see the park in its entirety.

Tennessee: Graceland

Location: Memphis, Tennessee

What to do at Graceland: Located just outside of Memphis is the former residence of the one and only Elvis Presley. The home sits on nearly 14 acres and was the home of Elvis, his wife Priscilla and daughter Lisa Marie. Today, it is the No. 1 destination for Elvis fans who come to pay tribute to the life and legend of the world-famous singer and actor.

While visiting the estate, you can tour the property and see the rooms of the home, which have been left as they were when Elvis lived there, including the iconic Jungle Room. See memorabilia, leave Elvis a "love letter" on the awl in front of Graceland or snap a picture in front of the musical gates at the property entrance.

Texas: The Alamo

Location: San Antonio, Texas

Best time to visit: March to April

Where to stay: Thompson San Antonio-Riverwalk

What to do at The Alamo: When driving through Texas, you'll have plenty to see and do, but one thing is for certain — you must remember the Alamo. The Alamo Mission is an 18th-century mission and fortress that was constructed in what is now San Antonio. It was also the site of the Battle for Texas in 1836 during the Texas Revolution.

Today, you can step back in time on a guided battlefield tour as well as visit the gardens, a gift shop and a very comprehensive collection of artifacts that were donated by, believe it or not, musician Phil Collins.

Utah: Zion National Park

Location: Springdale, Utah

Where to stay: Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort

What to do at Zion National Park: Utah is known for its abundance of national parks — there are five of them, to be exact. But if you only have time for one, it must be Zion National Park, which is considered to be one of the most scenic and dramatic.

If you are on a time restriction, the main attractions are Zion Canyon Scenic Drive as well as Zion-Mount Carmel Highway. You'll be able to see the famous Zion Canyon or access the Canyon Overlook Trail. 

Vermont: Church Street Marketplace

Location: Burlington, Vermont

Best time to visit: May to September

Where to stay: Hotel Vermont

What to do at the Church Street Marketplace: Burlington is the gateway to New England's Great Outdoors, and it's a city that is steeped with history and charm. Soak up the vibes at the Church Street Marketplace, one of the most beloved institutions in town. The uncovered pedestrian shopping and dining mall spans four blocks.

More than 130 shops are available for patrons, and the marketplace often puts on events and festivals throughout the year. It is also situated near the beautiful Burlington waterfront, so you'll get many different scenes in one location.

Virginia: Shenandoah National Park

Location: Waynesboro, Virginia

Best time to visit: June to October

Where to stay: Residence Inn Waynesboro

What to do at Shenandoah National Park: A drive through Virginia is incomplete without a stop at Shenandoah National Park. The stunning national park runs along the Blue Ridge Mountains and has a lengthy network of trails for hiking and biking. You can even find a slice of the Appalachian Trail running through the park.

For road trippers, though, the choice is clear — a drive along Skyline Drive is a must. This scenic route runs the entire length of the park and has parking spots at many of the popular trailheads. But even if you don't get out of your car, Skyline Drive is the best way to soak up all the beauty of the park and the rolling blue hills of Virginia.

Washington: Hurricane Ridge

Location: Port Angeles, Washington

Best time to visit: May to October

Where to stay: Red Lion Hotel Port Angeles Harbor

What to do at Hurricane Ridge: Washington State is peppered with landmarks, from Mount Rainier to Mount St. Helens. But if you have time for only one landmark in Washington, let it be Hurricane Ridge within Olympic National Park.

The ridge has peaks that reach an elevation of 5,242 feet and is a year-round destination, whether for hiking in summer or skiing in winter. A scenic road is open during the summer months and has gorgeous views of the ridge. 

West Virginia: Harpers Ferry National Historical Park

Location: Harpers Ferry, West Virginia

Where to stay: Clarion Inn Harpers Ferry - Charles Town

What to do in Harpers Ferry National Historical Park: Harpers Ferry is the point where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet in West Virginia. It holds an important place in American history, which is why it's the most notable landmark in the state.

In the 19th century, Harpers Ferry was the scene of a failed abolitionist uprising started by John Brown. Today, John Brown's fort is the most visited historic site in the state. In addition to historic sites, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park has hiking trails and a Civil War Living History Museum.

Wisconsin: State Capitol Building

Location: Madison, Wisconsin

Best time to visit: May to November

What to do at the Wisconsin State Capitol building: Visiting Wisconsin? You'll have to put Madison on your list to visit the Wisconsin State Capitol building. It happens to be the tallest building in the city and sits majestically overlooking Capitol Square.

Its dome reaches more than 200 feet and is topped by a bronze statue called, "Wisconsin." The Roman Renaissance-style building has Italian marble, murals and paintings, making it one of the most beautiful structures in the country. The building has free 45-minute guided tours daily. 

Wyoming: Grand Teton National Park

Location: Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Best time to visit: September

What to do at Grand Teton National Park: Nothing takes your breath away quite like your first glimpse of the Tetons, the famous mountain range in Wyoming. The range is most known for Grand Teton, which towers at 13,775 feet.

For more than 100 years, the National Park Service has managed millions of acres solely for the "enjoyment, education and inspiration of this and future generations." Today, 63 designated national parks in the United States draw millions of visitors a year to witness jaw-dropping natural wonders and unforgettable terrains. To determine the best U.S. national parks, U.S. News considered scenic beauty, range of activities and the opinions of both travel experts and recent park visitors. Do you have a favorite park? Glacier National Park

Considered one of the world's best places to visit , Glacier National Park spans two mountain ranges and includes more than 700 lakes across Montana. Take advantage of the park's expansive hiking trails, and be sure to hit traveler favorites like the Trail of the Cedars and Iceberg Lake Trail. Other activities include a ride along the scenic Going-to-the-Sun Road and a trip to the unique Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Canadian border. What's more, Glacier National Park hosts plenty of free ranger-led activities like guided hikes and stargazing events ideal for visitors of all ages.

Even if Yellowstone didn't hold the incredible distinction of being the world's first national park, the 2.2 million-acre park, which stretches across Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, could easily stand on its own for its unique natural attractions and magnificent landscapes . Here, travelers can get lost in the splendor of Yellowstone's many lakes, mountains, bison-filled valleys and, of course, its unmatched hot springs and active geysers (of which the park boasts more than half of the world's supply). To avoid the crowds that often plague Yellowstone while also ensuring excellent weather, plan to visit in April, May or October.

One of California's most-visited national parks, Yosemite National Park stands out for its bevy of impressive waterfalls, such as Vernal Fall and Bridalveil Fall, as well as its unique granite rock formations like Half Dome and El Capitan. There are also ample scenic hiking and camping opportunities; just keep in mind that campsites sell out quickly after becoming available for booking, so make your reservations in advance. Whatever your itinerary may be, make sure to stop by the Tunnel View overlook, which offers showstopping panoramas of Yosemite Valley. What's more, the picturesque lookout spot is relatively easy to access (no hiking is required).

The Grand Canyon is so magnificent that even the highest quality photos don't do the Arizona park's vast beauty justice – you just have to see it in person. The 18-by-277-mile UNESCO World Heritage Site offers endless hiking opportunities with trails of various lengths and degrees of difficulty, as well as the chance to raft the Colorado River. For a slight break from the tourist crowds, head to the less-congested North Rim. And if you're looking for a different vantage point, consider a helicopter tour to learn more about Grand Canyon National Park and see it in all its glory from above.

Jackson Hole's backcountry is a wild wonderland begging to be explored. Once home to ranchers and fur trappers, this Wyoming park now offers more than 250 miles of trails that weave past forests, lakes and the jagged, snow-capped peaks of the Grand Teton mountain range. The Cascade Canyon Trail – which takes travelers past waterfalls, glacier-carved canyons and more – shows off the best of Grand Teton National Park's stunning topography. Don't forget to stop by the Craig Thomas Discovery & Visitor Center to stock up on maps, check out its informational exhibits and watch the interesting documentary film about the park.

Utah's Zion National Park is a paradise for thrill-seekers. Hike Angels Landing, which brings you up through a nearly 1,500-foot natural staircase (permits are required to hike this popular trail and are awarded through an online lottery system). You can also trek The Narrows, a roughly 10-mile hike through the thinnest section of Zion Canyon, which requires hikers to travel upstream through the Virgin River. For a less strenuous exploration of the park, join a shuttle bus tour to traverse the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, which takes you past many of the park's most famous landmarks.

Spanning six million acres of unspoiled Alaskan wilderness, Denali National Park and Preserve is as vast as it is fascinating. One-sixth of the park is covered in glaciers, and the tallest mountain in North America, Denali, stands within its bounds, towering at 20,310 feet high. The park appeals to true explorers as there isn't an abundance of marked trails. However, free ranger-led trail hikes are available seasonally. Visitors can also watch a sled dog demonstration, go snowmobiling or take a narrated bus tour of the 92-mile Denali Park Road to see scenic landmarks like Savage River and Wonder Lake.

Comprised of glaciers, coastal fjords and icefields, Kenai Fjords National Park transports guests to an age where ice covered large parts of the earth. The Harding Icefield – which was created more than 23,000 years ago – is one of this Alaska park's main features, extending for 700 square miles and viewable via the 8.2-mile Harding Icefield Trail. Visitors can also embark on the Glacier Overlook Trail and Glacier View Loop Trail to catch vistas of Exit Glacier, which flows from the famed icefield. Or, take a kayak or a boat tour to experience the awe-inspiring landscapes from the water.

Hoodoos are odd-shaped pillars of rock left standing from forces of erosion, and Bryce Canyon National Park is home to the most extensive collection of hoodoos in the world. Located in southern Utah, the nearly 36,000-acre park offers an array of hiking opportunities. All trails offer a glimpse of the impressive red rock formations; visitors can also sign up for guided horseback riding tours. While Bryce Canyon is most popular in summer, the park's stark white snow-covered landscape juxtaposed with the orange-red rocks is an unforgettable sight. Winter is also a prime time for activities such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

As the name suggests, Redwood National and State Parks are best known for their sky-high redwood trees, which typically soar more than 300 feet tall. Along with exploring the old-growth redwood groves, travelers can hike past rivers, through prairies and along 40 miles of Pacific Coast shoreline, spotting wildlife like elk, sea lions and various species of birds as they go. If you can't stay long, scenic drives like Howland Hill Road and Enderts Beach Road showcase park highlights. But for those wanting to sleep under the stars and rise with the sun, there are four developed campgrounds.

Established in 1929 and awarded national park status in 1971, Arches National Park covers nearly 77,000 acres in eastern Utah. Oddly shaped sandstone monuments occupy every view, and the formations make the park an excellent place for backpackers, rock climbers and hikers, not to mention photographers. Visitors will find a whopping 2,000-plus arches in the park – the world's densest concentration of these natural structures. The most popular to see are Landscape Arch, Delicate Arch and Double Arch. Plus, travelers will want to check out the visitor center, which features a wealth of information and exhibits outlining Arches National Park's history, geology and more.

Sequoia National Park is defined by its beautiful, towering sequoia trees – the largest trees in the world. Travelers can hike through this unique California national park to admire its trees, rivers, meadows and wildlife. A visit here is not complete without seeing the Giant Forest's General Sherman Tree, which measures nearly 275 feet tall and more than 36 feet in diameter, making it the world's largest tree by volume. After you ogle the truly impressive evergreens, try some other adventurous activities like rock climbing, horseback riding or fishing.

Among the nearly 1 million acres that make up Olympic National Park, visitors can wander through the enchanting Hoh Rainforest, trek to stunning overlooks and relax on more than 70 miles of Pacific Northwest coastline. One of North America's top hiking destinations , this Washington state gem features top trails like Mount Storm King and the Hall of Mosses. However, you will also want to save time for trying out one of Olympic National Park's other popular activities, which range from canoeing on Lake Crescent to birdwatching on Kalaloch and Ruby Beach.

Visit Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park for a chance to get up close and personal with two of the world's most active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kilauea. The latter almost continually erupts, which visitors can witness from multiple points in the park, including Crater Rim Drive and the famous Chain of Craters Road (although eruption sightings are never guaranteed). While driving along Chain of Craters Road, set aside time to stop at the Kealakomo Overlook. The scenic lookout offers expansive views of the Pacific Ocean and the ancient village of Kealakomo.

At 14,410 feet tall, Mount Rainer is the highest peak in the Cascade Range and the tallest volcano in the contiguous United States. Though thousands of travelers tackle the ambitious hike to the mountain's summit each year, it's far more popular to drive to Sunrise, the highest point accessible by vehicle, to soak in 360-degree views of the Cascade Range and Emmons Glacier. Numerous shorter hikes are also available at Mount Rainier National Park, so visitors can explore the temperate rainforests of Carbon River, admire the picturesque wildflower meadows at Paradise or search for the waterfalls in the old-growth forests at Ohanapecosh.

The Rockies earn plenty of points for their convenience. Sitting about 70 miles northwest of Denver, Rocky Mountain National Park makes for an easy daytrip. However, you could also spend days exploring this Colorado park. The Rockies' magnificent landscape is one for the books, featuring more than 350 miles of scenic trails, plenty of lakes and numerous mountain peaks taller than 10,000 feet. If you're short on time, Emerald Lake Trail is a popular trek that's less than 5 miles round trip and promises spectacular alpine views. If you'd rather skip the hiking, opt instead for an auto tour of Trail Ridge Road.

Country Summary:  Violent crime, including armed robbery, homicide and sexual assault is a concern throughout the Dominican Republic. The development of a professional tourist police corps, institution of a 911 system in many parts of the country, and a concentration of resources in resort areas means these tend to be better policed than urban areas like Santo Domingo. The wide availability of weapons, the use and trade of illicit drugs, and a weak criminal justice system contribute to the high level of criminality on the broader scale.

• Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Visas are not required for visits shorter than 30 days. Visit the  Embassy of the Dominican Republic  website for current visa information.

All visitors to the Dominican Republic are charged a $10 tourist card fee that is incorporated into airline charges. Cruise passengers must obtain a tourist card if they are disembarking for longer than 24 hours. Once used, the card allows for stays up to 30 days but can be extended at the General Directorate of Migration in Santo Domingo.

Contact the  Migration Department  in Santo Domingo for visa extension requests. Failure to request an extension will result in a fine at the airport upon departure. The fines range from approximately $55 USD for one month to as high as $1,555 USD for overstays of 10 years or more.

All passengers are required to fill out an  E-Ticket  or paper form when entering or exiting the Dominican Republic. If using E-Ticket, a new form is required for each entry and exit and the code generated upon form completion can be presented at the airport on a digital device.

Visitors must have a ticket entering and leaving the country, the financial means to pay for their stay, and an address in the Dominican Republic where they will be staying.

Exit Requirements for Children:  Minors (children under 18) who are citizens (including dual citizens) or legal residents of the Dominican Republic, if not accompanied by both parents or legal guardian(s), are required to present official proof of parental consent to travel. Please see the Dominican  Migration Department's  website for detailed instructions on the required documents.

HIV/AIDS Restrictions:  Some HIV/AIDS entry restrictions exist for visitors to and foreign residents of the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic has restrictions on granting residency to people with HIV/AIDS. Please verify information with the Dominican Republic’s  Migration Department  before you travel.

Yellow Fever Vaccine:  Proof of vaccination against yellow fever is required for travelers entering the Dominican Republic from Brazil. Similar requirements may apply to those traveling from other  countries with yellow fever risk .

Safety and Security

Crime:  Crime is a threat throughout the Dominican Republic. Tourist destinations are generally more policed than metropolitan areas.

• If robbed, hand over your personal belongings without resisting.
• Do not carry or wear valuable items that will attract attention.
• Be wary of strangers.
• Travel with a partner or group if possible.

International Financial Scams:  See the  Department of State  and the  FBI   pages for information.

Dating App Robberies:  Several U.S. citizen travelers in the Dominican Republic have reported that they were robbed by people they met through popular online dating applications. If meeting with strangers, you should strongly consider meeting only in public places and avoiding isolated locations where crimes are most likely to occur.

Demonstrations:  Avoid areas of demonstrations and exercise caution if you are in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.

Victims of Crime:  Report crimes to the local tourist police (POLITUR) at 809-222-2026 or  911  and contact the U.S. Embassy at 809-567-7775. 911 is operational throughout the country apart from some areas located near the Haitian border. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime.

• Help you find appropriate medical care.
• Assist you in reporting a crime to the police.
• Contact relatives or friends with your written consent.
• Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion.
• Provide a list of local attorneys.
• Provide our information on  victim’s compensation programs in the U.S.
• Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution.
• Replace a stolen or lost passport.

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact POLITUR (809-222-2026), the  National Police ( 809-682-2151), and the U.S. Embassy for assistance.

Sexual Assault:  Rape and sexual assault has been reported throughout the Dominican Republic, including at major resorts and hotels.

Notes for your safety:

• U.S. citizens have been targeted with date rape drugs.
• Sexual assault victims in the Dominican Republic should not expect the totality of assistance offered in the United States. Rape kits are often not available until the following morning and must be administered by Dominican authorities.
• Victims often have to request medication to avoid transmission of STDs and reduce the chances of pregnancy.
• Prosecution of a rape case moves forward very slowly. Dominican law may require the victim to return to the Dominican Republic at some stages of the judicial process.
• Security outside of the resort area, including beach areas, is unpredictable, especially at night.

Best Practices:

• Contact the police/hotel management if resort staff demonstrate unwanted attention.
• Victims of sexual/other assault should contact the police and the Embassy. Insist that hotel management take immediate action by contacting the police.
• In a resort, avoid secluded places. Always be accompanied by someone you know, even going to the restroom.
• Do not consume alcoholic beverages alone or with new acquaintances. Do not leave drinks unattended.  Know your limits and help your friends/travelling companions to remain safe.
• Shout for help immediately if threatened or made uncomfortable.
• Report suspicious activity, including excessive friendliness by hotel employees, to hotel management, the U.S. Embassy, and local police.
• Do not swim alone due to life-threatening undertows.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities may not commonly occur in all parts of the country. Hazardous areas and activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in or near major cities or major tourist zones. First responders may be unable to access areas outside of major cities or major tourist zones. The ability to provide urgent medical treatment may be limited. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more  information on insurance providers for overseas coverage . 

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business. 

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website. Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking illegal drugs in the Dominican Republic are severe, and convicted offenders can expect long jail sentences and heavy fines. Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, their possession they may still be illegal according to local laws. LGBTI Travelers:  There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in the Dominican Republic.

Travelers with Disabilities:  The law in the Dominican Republic prohibits discrimination against persons with physical, sensory, intellectual or mental disabilities, but the law is not enforced consistently. Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is not as prevalent as in the United States. Accessible facilities, information, communication/access to services and ease of movement is limited in most parts of the country. Large resorts and Santo Domingo may have some generally accessible infrastructure, but travelers should not expect the level available in the United States.

Disaster Preparedness:  Register with the Embassy on or before your arrival through our  travel registration website . In the event of a natural disaster or emergency, this will keep you informed. Real Estate:  Property rights are irregularly enforced, and investors often encounter problems in receiving clear title to land. Consult a reputable attorney before signing documents or closing on any real estate transactions. Real estate investments by U.S. citizens have been subject to legal and physical takeover attempts. Absentee landlords and absentee owners of undeveloped land are particularly vulnerable. Consider purchasing title insurance. Scams:  Scammers often target elderly people by pretending to be a law enforcement official, an attorney, or a U.S. Embassy official, claiming that a loved one has been arrested overseas. The caller instructs the victim to wire money. Scammers sometimes impersonate family members, such as a scared grandchild. Contact the U.S. Embassy before wiring money to the Dominican Republic. When in doubt, try to contact your loved one directly.

Ambulance services:

• The training and availability of emergency responders may be below U.S. standards.
• Ambulances are not present or reliable in most areas of the country. They are more reliable and available in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Punta Cana, and Puerto Plata.

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas.  Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the  Ministry for Public Health  to ensure the medication is legal in the Dominican Republic.

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The U.S. Embassy maintains a  list of doctors and hospitals . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Health facilities in general:

• Public medical clinics lack basic resources and supplies.
• Hospitals and doctors require payment “up front” prior to service or admission.
• Private hospitals usually require advance payment or proof of adequate insurance before admitting a patient.
• Be aware that some hotels, resorts, etc. have exclusive agreements with medical providers, which have costs associated and may limit your choices in seeking emergency medical attention.
• Medical staff may speak little or no English.
• Generally, in public hospitals only minimal staff is available overnight in non-emergency wards. Consider hiring a private nurse or having family spend the night with the patient, especially a minor child.
• Patients bear all costs for transfer to or between hospitals.

Medical Tourism and Elective Surgery

U.S. citizens have suffered serious complications or died during or after having cosmetic or other elective surgery. 

If you are considering travel to the Dominican Republic for cosmetic surgery, be mindful of the following:

• Have a medical evaluation from a U.S. doctor to determine if you are a good candidate for surgery.
• Before travel, carefully research the doctor (e.g. qualifications, experience performing the surgery, complication rate) and credentials of the recovery facility you plan to use.
• Share all health information (e.g. medical conditions, medications, allergies) with your doctor before your surgery.
• Obtain international travel insurance that covers medical evacuation back to the United States and repatriation of remains. For more information, see:  https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/insurance . 
• See a travel medicine professional in the United States at least 4–6 weeks before your trip to discuss healthy travel and to learn about specific risks related to your surgery and travel. • Your legal options in case of malpractice are very limited in the Dominican Republic. 

Tap Water:  Tap water is unsafe to drink. Bottled water and beverages are considered safe. Please note that many restaurants use tap water for ice.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:  Driving conditions vary across the country. Drive defensively and with extreme caution.

Consider hiring a professional driver instead of driving yourself. You can hire licensed drivers who are familiar with local roads through local car rental agencies. In case of accidents, normally only the driver will be taken into custody. In 2019 six people died per day due to traffic accidents in the Dominican Republic.

Frequent hazards include:

• other drivers not using headlights and/or taillights after dark
• animals in the road
• missing manhole covers and large potholes
• uneven road surfaces
• scooters and motorcycles driving erratically and splitting lanes
• driving on sidewalks or against traffic
• intersections without stop signs
• unregulated and congested traffic patterns
• speeding or the running of stoplights
• heavy urban traffic

Traffic Laws:  Traffic laws are not enforced consistently. After an accident causing serious injury or death, authorities will often take the driver into custody, even if the driver is insured and appears to have not been at fault. Detentions frequently last until a judicial decision has been reached or until a waiver has been signed by the injured party.

Seat belts, and helmets for motorcyclists, are required by law. Violators may be fined. There are no child car seat laws. Police stop drivers using cell phones without a hands-free device.

Public Transportation:  Public transportation includes a metro and public bus system as well as shared bus or van taxis known as “guaguas” (converted vans or microbuses, often without doors). Guaguas run regular routes within urban areas and between towns in the countryside. Public buses and guaguas operating in the capital do not meet U.S. safety standards. Avoid unregulated taxis, which also often lack basic safety features. Use a reputable taxi service, either one recommended by your hotel or a well-known, vetted company. Rideshare services such as Uber are available in many parts of the country. Private bus lines travel between large cities and to popular tourist destinations.

Aviation Safety Oversight:  The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of the Dominican Republic’s air carrier operations. Maritime Travel:  The U.S. Coast Guard has concerns about the security practices in the ports of the Dominican Republic. Until those concerns can be addressed, the Coast Guard advises that Mariners and passengers on commercial vessels traveling through the ports of the Dominican Republic should exercise caution.

Mariners planning travel to the Dominican Republic should also check for  U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the  NGA broadcast warnings .

The Gold Coast's star attraction is its beaches, including the world-renowned stretch of sand at Surfers Paradise. With about 300 sunny days a year, you're likely to get good weather on the Gold Coast any time you visit. Montana is a state located in the western region of the United States . It is the fourth largest state in terms of land area, covering an area of 147,040 square miles. To the east, North Dakota and South Dakota border Montana. Wyoming is south of Montana, while Idaho lies to the west. In the north, it also shares a border with Canada . 

Gently sloped hills and plains characterize the eastern part of Montana. This region, known as the Great Plains, extends into North and South Dakota. The Missouri River flows through this region, providing water for irrigation and transportation. 

The Rocky Mountains take claim in the western part of Montana. The Continental Divide runs through this region. This divide separates watersheds that flow to the Pacific Ocean from those that flow to the Gulf of Mexico . Glacier National Park is located in this region and features spectacular mountain cliffs. Situated to the northeast of Yellowstone National Park , which is tucked into Montana's southern border with Wyoming and Idaho, is the Granite Peak – the state’s highest point, which rises to an elevation of 12,810ft.

Central Montana has several large river valleys, including the Yellowstone River Valley and the Gallatin River Valley. Mountains surround these valleys, which provide fertile land for agriculture. 

In southern Montana, the headwaters of the Missouri River form in the confluence of the Gallatin, Jefferson, and Madison Rivers. The Missouri River then meanders for over 2,500 miles. Additionally, the Yellowstone River originates in southwestern Wyoming and traverses across Montana before joining the Missouri River in North Dakota. Notably, Montana is unique among U.S. states in that its river waters flow into three distinct bodies of water: the Pacific Ocean, Hudson Bay , and the Gulf of Mexico. Finally, it is worth noting that Montana's lowest elevation point is along the Kootenai River at an altitude of 1,800 feet just south of the Canadian border.

In addition to its mountains and rivers, Montana also has several large lakes. Flathead Lake , located in northwestern Montana, is one of the largest freshwater lakes west of the Mississippi River . 

Montana's natural resources include timber, minerals such as gold and copper, oil and gas reserves, and abundant wildlife that supports hunting tourism. Additionally, outdoor recreation such as skiing, hiking, fishing, and camping attract visitors from around the world.

With an area of 380,800 sq. km, Montana is the 4 th largest and the 8 th least populous state in the USA. Located in the west-central part of the state, in the foothills of the Big Belt Mountains is Helena – the capital city of Montana. Due to its rich gold and silver deposits, the capital city has many mineral production and processing centers. Situated in the south-central part of the state is Billings – the largest city of Montana. It serves as the major financial, medical service, retail, and trading center of the state. It has been nicknamed the “Magic City” because of its rapid growth from an initial railroad town to one of the largest trading areas in the United States.

Severe weather stretching across the Midwest and East Coast on Monday disrupted plans for millions of Americans trying to make it home after a busy weekend that was expected to break records for Memorial Day travel. The disruptions followed storms and tornadoes that killed at least 23 people in the South and left hundreds of thousands without power.

Flights at airports from Atlanta to Boston experienced ground delays and stops as severe weather, including heavy rain and potentially damaging wind and hail, moved into much of the Eastern United States on Monday afternoon and evening.

Parts of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania were under severe storm watches through late Monday, and a tornado watch was issued for an area from northern Maryland through eastern North Carolina, including Washington, D.C. Heat and more thunderstorms were forecast for Texas and the Southern Plains on Tuesday, including possible hail and strong winds.

Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration said that they had worked with the airlines to plan for the expected weather disruptions over the Memorial Day weekend. On Friday, 2.9 million people were screened at U.S. airports , the Transportation Security Administration said — a single-day record.

By midday on Monday, La Guardia Airport in New York City had reported average ground delays of 100 minutes. Flights were also delayed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the busiest in the world. And ground stops and major delays were reported or expected at airports in Chicago, Virginia, Baltimore, Washington, Philadelphia and Cleveland because of the storms, according to the F.A.A.

In Kentucky, Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency on Monday morning after four people were killed over the weekend. On Monday afternoon, Gov. Beshear announced a fifth storm-related death in the state, a person who died from a heart attack while cutting fallen trees. More than 150,000 customers in the state were without power at midday after damaging winds.

Elsewhere, a tornado left at least seven people dead in North Texas, including two children ages 2 and 5. Eight people were killed in Arkansas, and two died in Oklahoma as severe storms swept through the region, flattening hundreds of buildings and blowing away homes. And severe thunderstorms in Virginia resulted in at least one fatality, officials said.

Thousands of others in the South and the Midwest were without power on Monday, according to the tracking site poweroutage.us .

Later on Monday, severe thunderstorms were expected from Texas to New York, the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center said . Flash flooding was possible from Maryland to the Catskill Mountains in New York, the Weather Service said , and tornadoes were possible in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Forecast risk of severe storms for Monday

The system was the latest to pummel the region over the past few days. Five people were killed and part of a city was obliterated in Iowa last week after a powerful tornado hit.

President Biden issued a statement of condolence to those affected by the storms, and he thanked emergency responders for their work.

“Jill and I are praying for those who tragically lost their lives as a result of devastating tornadoes that tore through Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma, leveling entire communities and leaving a path of destruction in their wake,” Mr. Biden said.

Mr. Biden said that the federal government was “ready to provide support as needed.” He noted that the Memorial Day holiday storms came just weeks after counties in the Midwest and South were recovering from severe weather.

On Sunday, severe thunderstorms in Howell County, Mo., produced hail the size of baseballs and tornadoes that downed trees and damaged homes near the town of Mountain View, said Kelsey Angle, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Springfield.

In Kentucky, Governor Beshear deployed the National Guard to help state forestry workers clear downed trees and dangerous debris. He activated the state’s price-gouging statute to prevent price increases on necessary supplies, and said he believed that the state would qualify for public assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Emergency workers have reported high water, fallen trees and other dangerous conditions in about a third of Kentucky’s 120 counties, mostly in the western part of the state, Jim Gray, the Kentucky transportation secretary, said at a news conference. The storms also impacted nearly 100 state highways.

In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott s igned a severe weather disaster declaration that covered 106 counties. Officials estimate that nearly 100 people were injured over the weekend, more than 200 homes were destroyed and over 220 buildings were damaged.
