How to avoid paying fines

Make sure to adhere to these tips and you won't have to pay any overstaying fines.

  • 1. Plan your return trip beforehand. This trick will save you lots of money as you won’t need to pay any overstay fines. Use Visa days calculator to count your days of stay accurately.
  • 2. Make use of the Days Calculator Days Between Two Dates and tick the ‘Include end date in calculation’ box. 1 day will be added as UAE immigration counts your date of entry into the country too
  • 3. Use the UAE Immigration’s file validity checking systems to confirm your last day of stay after you have entered the country.
  • 4. Request your visa provider to send you screenshots from the immigration system to confirm your last day of stay in UAE.
  • 5. Get to know your visa type and read the Type of visas in UAE for a better understanding of grace periods and their availability.
  • 6. Avoid any travels on the last day of your grace period as delays in flights can postpone your stay resulting in fines being charged. Always travel a minimum of 2 days before your last day of grace period.

Fines During Corona-virus

Any UAE visit visa holders waiting for an announcement for a stay extension for the individuals unable to leave UAE due to airport closures and flight cancellations there won't be any overstaying fines charged. The Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship had made a statement on March 23, 2020 that such individuals will be able to extend their stay in the country until situations improve. Modifying visa status – Status change

Under the Ministerial Resolution No. 377 of 2014 , visa holders of all types can modify the status of their entry while staying in the country if they wish to get a residency visa. A payment of 550 to 650 AED and compliance to certain requirements and conditions have to be met for successfully modifying visa status into residency visa. However, the applicant must ensure to perform this step before his current visa expires to avoid any fines being charged.

Is it criminal?

In UK, overstaying without a valid reason is a criminal offence under section 24 of the Immigration Act 1971 . In UAE, there is no law that says overstaying a visitor's visa or expired residence visa is a criminal offence. Most of the visit visa holders and cancelled residence visa holders overstay due to reasons like flight cancellations (Now due to corona), delays in processing new visa or employment visa. In most cases the average period of overstaying is between 5 to 15 days. In certain cases, Asian visitors have been scammed into believing that their visit visa is an employment visa resulting in them overstaying for many months. In such an instance, it is regarded as a criminal offence and the individual will be deported upon getting caught. As UAE practices many humanitarian acts, once every one or two years, The UAE visa amnesty requests all individuals who are overstaying to exit the country and waive off their overstaying fines.

Overstaying affect my re-entry?

We have heard news that overstaying for more than 1 to 2 months could affect any prospective employment opportunities. There are no laws confirmed about how overstaying will affect a visitor’s or resident’s next re-entry. In our experience some individuals who had overstayed and re applied for a new visa were approved while some were rejected. This decision is solely reliant on the Immigration departments’ security team.

UAE visa overstay fines cut from Dh100 to Dh50 per day

Penalty for allowing any visa to expire now fixed at dh50 per day.

The UAE is offering new types of visa, including options for long-stay tourists, jobseekers, accomplished professionals, star students and high-net-worth individuals. Wam

Ali Al Shouk author image

Tourists who stay beyond the validity of their visa will pay a reduced fine of Dh50 per day instead of Dh100, authorities have said.

However, if found to be overstaying when on a residency permit the penalty has risen, from Dh25 a day to Dh50.

The changes have been in force since the new UAE entry and residence visa rules came into effect on October 3.

Previously, the penalty was calculated depending on the kind of visa that had expired.

“The new system unified the amount of overstay fines to Dh50 per day for any type of visa violator,” said a spokesperson from the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security.

“The overstay fine payment can be paid either by visiting happiness centres or online through the authority website and smart application.”

Any days spent requesting documents or updating information are included in the number of days accumulating the fine.

If an application to renew the visa is started but the correct documents are not uploaded within 30 days, or the wrong documents are uploaded more than three times, the application is cancelled and a new one must be started.

Residency visa holders have a six-month grace period to either leave the country or change their status once the permit has either been cancelled or expired. Beyond this it becomes a crime to stay in the UAE and an arrest can be made.

For expired visit visas, the offender can be arrested after 30 days without a visa renewal. Inspection campaigns are regularly carried out to catch offenders.

The new UAE visa rules that came into effect last month allow holidaymakers to stay for 60 days at a time.

The decision to make all entry visas valid for 60 days from the date of issue ― double the previous allowance ― is one of a series of visa changes approved by the Cabinet in April.

Previously, there was no specific visa for tourists and those wishing to visit the UAE applied for 30-day, 60-day or 90-day visit visas.

The one, two and three-month entry permits are still available on a new visa, but mainly for people wishing to visit friends or relatives in the country, which requires documentary evidence proving the relationship and reasons for the visit.

All entry visas are available for single or multiple entry and can be renewed for a further 60 days.

Blacklisting, life ban for overstaying? GDRFA Dubai responds to ‘UAE overstay announcement’

  • Environment

Authority denies social media posts, asks public to get information from official sources

fakefake-1719491042354

Dubai: The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) Dubai has denied social media posts about an “overstay announcement” as rumours.

Gulf News received two such posts addressing travel agents and customers on WhatsApp.

The posts said: “Dubai immigration has announced a final overstay policy change effective immediately. Any passengers overstaying more than 5 days will be permanently absconded without prior notice.”

Get exclusive content with Gulf News WhatsApp channel

Furthermore, the posts said, “Their names will be added to the blacklist, and they will be excluded from processing any work visa and deported with a lifetime ban.”

Though riddled with typos and grammatical errors, one post urged agents to inform their “customers about the new rule urgently to avoid any issues”.

“Please ensure compliance to avoid severe consequences,” said another post addressing “customers”.

GDRFA Call Centre said that they are aware of those posts and clarified that they had not been issued by GDRFA. One such post carries the logo of the Ministry of Interior with the name of GDRFA.

When contacted, the GDRFA media department also issued a statement rebutting the rumours.

GDRFA statement

“The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in Dubai urges the public not to follow rumours and to obtain information from official sources,” the authority said in a statement to Gulf News.

“It also calls on residents and those whose residency is issued by the Emirate of Dubai and are facing specific residency issues to communicate with the administration through its official channels in order to find suitable solutions to their problems,” it added.

Dubai resident Amal Gireesh said he had received the posts from a couple of travel agents.

“I was checking for the latest updates for someone I know who is on a visit visa. That is when I received this WhatsApp post. I checked with a couple of travel agents. Everyone said this is the update. I was wondering how this could be true when the GDRFA logo in the post itself is not correct,” he wondered.

How to Check Overstay Visa Fine in UAE

How to Check Overstay Visa Fine in UAE

Millions of people come to the UAE every year for work, study, leisure, or all of the above. There are visas depending on your purpose for entering the country. Of course, these visas come with validity periods, and there’s a process to follow if you want to extend your stay.

Once your visa expires, there’s a grace period during which you can either exit the country, or file an application to extend or change your status. Failure to do so would mean that you are overstaying, and there are fines for overstaying as a tourist or resident in the UAE. In this article, we will talk about how you can check your overstay visa fine, and how you can pay for it online.

Validity Period of UAE Visas

What is overstaying, how much is overstay visa fine, how to check overstay visa fine online, how to pay overstay visa fine online, other ways to pay overstay visa fine.

As mentioned earlier, there is a validity period for each visa, depending on the type of visa you have and the purpose of your visit. These include tourist visas, eVisas, student visas, residence visas, investment visas, and retirement visas, among others.

The tourist visa allows you to stay in the UAE for up to 90 days, which may be extended for the same period or duration. Meanwhile, the eVisa, which is specifically for GCC residents, is valid for 30 days starting from the date of issue. It may be extended for up to 30 days.

Student visas are typically valid for one year beginning from the date of issue, and may be extended for the same period as well. On the other hand, residence visas are usually valid for one, two, or three years, depending on your purpose of travel.

As for investment visas and retirement visas, these are usually valid for five to 10 years — periods that may be extended, too. Once again, the validity period of your visa depends on your purpose for coming to the UAE.

What exactly is overstaying? This happens when your visa expires, and you are not able to exit the country or extend your stay legally. There’s a grace period during which you can do so — 30 days for tourist visas, for example. Beyond this period, you would be considered overstaying if you’re still in the UAE.

For those who hold residence visas, the grace period to either exit the UAE or change visa status is six months after the visa expires. After this period, it would be considered as overstaying. This is illegal, and an arrest could be made if fines are not paid and legal steps are not taken.

As of November 2022, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) has standardised overstaying fines in the UAE, Gulf News reported.

For tourist and visit visa holders, the overstaying fine is AED 50 per day . Previously, it was AED 100 per day. That’s a reduction by half… a big difference, indeed!

Meanwhile, for residence visa holders, the overstaying fine is also AED 50 per day . This is actually an increase from the previous amount, which was AED 25 per day. In this case, the amount has doubled.

If you have overstayed and you’d like to check your visa fine, you can do this online through the official website of the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP). Below are the steps that you need to take:

  • Go to the official website of ICP through this link .
  • For “Select the Module,” choose either “File Number” or “Citizens of Certain Countries.”
  • If you selected “File Number,” you’ll need to enter information regarding your visa file number, specifically the department, year, service, and sequence. On the other hand, if you selected “Citizens of Certain Countries,” you’ll need to provide your passport number, passport type, nationality, and date of birth.
  • Solve the “Captcha” portion, then click “Search.”
  • The following page will show all the important details, including how long you have overstayed, and how much you need to pay as overstay fine.

How to Check Overstay Visa Fine in UAE

After checking your overstay fine, you have the option to pay for your visa fine online through the same website. Here’s how to do it:

  • Follow the above steps, “How to Check Overstay Visa Fine Online.”
  • After checking your overstay fine, click “Next.”
  • Enter your banking information and mobile number. You will receive an OTP to proceed with the transaction. Please note that in addition to the overstay fine, there may also be a service fee that you need to pay.
  • After making your payment, you will receive an SMS on your mobile phone as well as an email confirmation containing the receipt of your payment. That’s it!

Paying your overstay fine online is fast and convenient. However, there are other ways in which you can pay your overstay visa fines, depending on your preference. These include typing centers and local immigration offices.

In addition, you can also pay at airports, ports, and border crossings. For instance, before leaving the UAE, you can pay your fine at the airport so that your overstay fees may be settled.

No matter what type of visa you have, be it a tourist visa, residence visa, student visa, or others — it’s important to know its validity so that you would know whether you have overstayed or not. If you have overstayed in the UAE, then checking and paying for your visa fine is definitely a must. Otherwise, you might face serious legal consequences, even arrest! What’s more, you might get blacklisted and unable to return to the country. So be sure to pay your fines!

DISCLAIMER: We hope that the above guide has been helpful, especially if you or anyone you know has been overstaying in the UAE. Please keep in mind, however, that this guide is presented for general, information-sharing purposes only. In order to learn more about visa fees, overstaying, and how to pay your fines, please visit the official websites of the UAE Government Portal and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security or ICP.
