The Tsavo East National Park is one of the oldest and largest parks in Kenya at 13,747 square kilometres. Situated in a semi-arid area previously known as the Taru Desert it opened in April 1948, and is located near the town of Voi in the Taita-Taveta County of the former Coast Province. 

The Tsavo East National Park forms part of one of the greatest wildlife conservancies on Earth and is one of the largest national parks in Kenya. It is also known for its legend of the Maneaters of Tsavo, a pair of man-eating male lions in the Tsavo region. 

The park also makes up 4% of Kenya’s land mass and has some of the largest herds of elephants in Africa residing there with the opportunity to see dust-red elephants bathing in the Galana River.

Why visit Tsavo East National Park?

There are plenty of great things to do in Kenya and Tsavo is considered one of the world’s biodiversity strongholds with its popularity mostly due to the vast amounts of diverse wildlife that can be seen, including the famous ‘Big Five’ consisting of lion, black rhino, cape buffalo, elephant and leopard.

Tsavo National Park is also a popular stop-off point on Kenya ‘safari and beach’ itineraries. The western section of this vast park is located to the east of Mount Kilimanjaro and is a wonderland of lava flows, rocky outcrops and red-soil grass and woodlands. 

Slightly larger and less accessed, Tsavo East is a slightly better choice than the western side, but both offer great scenery and, as the dense bush dries back in the winter months, very good game viewing and birding that is second only to Lake Naivasha National Park.

The park has abundant wildlife, but due to its size and thicker vegetation game viewing is more challenging. For this reason it is less popular than the Maasai Mara and Amboseli. 

However, the park has one of the most diverse landscapes in East Africa, with several volcanic craters and interesting hills.

The park forms the largest protected area in Kenya and is home to most of the larger mammals which visitors will see on game drives including the Big Five with vast herds of red elephant, Rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard, pods of hippo, crocodile, waterbucks, lesser Kudu and gerenuk. 

Their red dust coating makes them stand out against the arid environment. Of the big cats, lions are most easily spotted. Buffalo, zebra and plenty of Masai giraffes are some of the other animals you can expect to see.

Tsavo East has a good range of unusual antelopes. This is one of the few places to see the fringe-eared oryx. The lesser kudu is very shy, but can sometimes be seen darting off into the bushes. 

The long-necked gerenuk can be found standing on its hind-legs to reach the sparse foliage of trees and bushes. With some luck, you might spot the critically endangered hirola or Hunter’s hartebeest.

Tsvao has a prolific birdlife featuring over 500 recorded species. It has many dry-country specials which are easy to spot, including the magnificent golden-breasted starling, golden pipit and vulturine guineafowl. The park is also the southernmost stronghold for the Somali ostrich. 

Drained by the Tsavo and Galana rivers, and the Tiva River in the north, the park comprises semiarid plains covered by dormant vegetation (which bursts into luxuriant bloom after a light rain) and acacia and baobab trees.

There are also three types of grasses found in Tsavo including grouped-trees grassland, Scattered-trees grassland and Shrub or Dwarf-trees grassland to be seen in Tsavo East, but the most widely distributed are the Scattered-trees and the Shrub or Dwarf-trees Grasslands.

How to get to Tsavo?

By plane .

There are no scheduled flights to Tsavo East, but there are several airstrips available for chartered flights. 

The two most useful international airports in Kenya are: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), 15km/9mi southeast of Nairobi; and the smaller Moi International Airport (MBA), 9km/6mi west of Mombasa for visitors wondering how to get to Kenya .

A Kenya visa will most likely be required to enter the country.

Tsavo East is in southeast Kenya, 325km/201mi from Nairobi and 250km/ 155mi from Mombasa. You can drive to the reserve from Nairobi, Mombasa or another park depending on your itinerary. 

The distance from Lake Nakuru NP is 450km/280mi and the driving time is about 7½ hours.

Visitors to Tsavo East can expect a hot, dry climate. The average temperature fluctuates between 31°C/88°F during the day and 20°C/68°F at nighttime.

Best time to go

Understanding the best time to visit Kenya is important as this will impact accommodation, flight prices, availability and the weather that visitors can expect on their safari vacation. Wildlife game viewing inside the Tsavo is superb at all times. 

Tsavo is best visited in the dry season months from June to October and January to February. Although the park can be visited any time of year, wildlife viewing during the height of the Wet season (November, April and May) is not recommended.

Health 

Most of Kenya, including Tsavo East, lies in a malaria area. While taking antimalarials is advisable, a few sensible precautions – such as covering up at dusk, and using mosquito repellent with DEET – also provide a good defence against contracting malaria. Tsavo East National Park is one of the oldest and largest parks in Kenya at 13,747 square kilometers. Situated in a semi-arid area previously known as the Taru Desert it opened in April 1948, and is located near the town of Voi in the Taita-Taveta County of the former Coast Province.

Ashnil Aruba is located at the heart of the Tsavo and gives you an added advantage when looking for a game. Several watering holes nearby attract wildlife and spotting animals is easy because the park lies flat with savannah grassland.

2 days Safari from Mombasa – What to Expect

This short safari takes you to Tsavo East National Park which is a wildlife lovers and birders haven with more than 500 species  of birds recorded. You expect with a little luck to see the big Five; Lions, Leopards, Elephants, Buffaloes & Rhinos but also many other animals including zebras, gazelles, impalas, hippos, wildebeests, hyenas, wild dogs, giraffes and may others.

Pick up at around 06.00 Hrs if you are staying at a beach hotel / resort in Mombasa or  Diani or 07.00 Hrs from a hotel / beach resort in Mombasa ( earlier if you staying at Malindi and Watamu), and we will set off towards the Tsavo East National Park along the Mombasa – Nairobi Highway with a brief stop coffee-stop on the way. Around 100 Km from Mombasa we arrive at the Gate where we register and access Tsavo East National Park via the Bachuma Gate from where you start the game drives straightaway on your way towards the seasonal Aruba dam. Lugard Falls where you will have your picnic lunch.

This say will be spent in the Tsavo East National Park in search of the many animals and birds found in this park with picnic lunch served at the famous Laggard falls located at the banks of River Galana where you expect to watch Nile crocodiles and hippos.

After the short lunch break at the picnic site you will continue with game drives around this ‘theater of the wild’ in search of the animals inkling Buffaloes, Cheetahs, elephants, Gazelles, leopards, lions, zebras among others until later in the afternoon around 06.00 Pm when you will check in at your lodge for dinner and overnight. Lunch and dinner included.

Tsavo East Safari – Drive back to Mombasa

On this day you got all the flexibility and choice to go for an early morning game drive starting from 06.00 Hrs if you are an early riser and do not mind waking up early. Perfect time to watch the nocturnal animal species as they retire from a night out of hunting, it is also a good time to see even the diurnal species that mostly like to graze along the game driving tracks to avoid the morning dew. At around 08.00 Hrs you will be taken back to your lodge where you will check out and head out with game viewing on your way out of the park and drive back to Mombasa city in the Kenyan coast. You may be dropped at Diani Beach or the Northern beaches of Watamu and Malindi depending on your plans. Transfer supplements apply according to your location.

The sight of dust-red elephant wallowing, rolling and spraying each other with the midnight blue waters of palm-shaded Galana River is one of the most evocative images in Africa. This, along with the 300 kilomtere long Yatta Plateau, the longest lava flow in the world, make for an adventure unlike any other in the Tsavo East. The park forms the largest protected area in Kenya and is home to most of the larger mammals, vast herds of dust –red elephant, Rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard, pods of hippo, crocodile, waterbucks, lesser Kudu, gerenuk and the prolific bird life features 500 recorded species.

This, along with the 300-kilometre long Yatta Plateau, the longest lava flow in the world, makes for an adventure unlike any other in the Tsavo East. It forms the largest protected area in Kenya. It is home to most of the larger mammals, vast herds of dust –red elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, pods of hippo, crocodile, waterbucks, lesser Kudu, gerenuk, and the prolific birdlife features 500 recorded species. Tsavo East is also famous for the Man-Eaters of Tsavo.  Beginning in the late 19th/early 20th century, the British began a concerted effort to colonize the interior of Kenya and built a railway through Tsavo in 1898. Two “man-eating lions” terrorized the construction crews led by Lt. Col Patterson, who eventually shot the pair not before they had killed one hundred and thirty-five Indians and local workers. The railway was eventually completed through to Kisumu on Lake Victoria. Have a short siesta, and later in the afternoon, head out for a game drive until sunset and return to the camp/lodge for dinner and overnight

Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, check out and drive towards Tsavo West. Enjoy a morning game drive en-route as you proceed to your camp/lodge for check-in and lunch. From the sight of fifty million gallons of crystal-clear water gushing out from the under parched lava rock that is the Mzima Springs to the Shetani lava flows, Tsavo West is a beautiful, rugged wilderness. The savannah ecosystem comprises open grasslands, scrublands, Acacia woodlands, belts of riverine vegetation and rocky ridges, including the Poacher’s Lookout, where visitors can see the teeming herds in the plains below. Tsavo West offers some of the most magnificent game viewing in the world, and attractions include elephants, rhinos, Hippos, lions, cheetah, leopards, Buffalos, diverse plant and bird species, including the threatened corncrake and near threatened Basra Reed Warbler. Have a short siesta, and later in the afternoon, head out for a game drive until sunset and return to the camp/lodge for dinner and overnight

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Have an early morning game drive in search of Tsavo’s big cats. Return to the lodge or camp for late breakfast. Check out and have an en-route game drive. Depart for Mombasa/ Diani, where your safari ends with a drop off at your beach resort or airport in the late afternoon.
