SINGAPORE TO KUALA LUMPUR by BUS or TRAIN: Crossing the Border

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double-check with the concerned establishments for the latest updates.

Aside from being a popular tourist destination, Singapore is also a favorite stopover for those who seek to explore other places in the region. One of the most usual routes is Singapore – Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).

Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are over 350 kilometers apart, which is a considerable distance. Yet, many backpackers do this route and skip many destinations in between because of the plenty of available direct transportation options.

The truth is, the plane is the quickest and easiest way to travel between these two great cities. It will only take about an hour from Changi Airport to Kuala Lumpur International Airport. This can also be an expensive option if you cannot score a cheaper airfare. If you are pressed for time and on a budget, you may check the budget carriers for promo/cheap fares.

But for those who have the luxury of time, traveling by land is something to consider. It takes around 6 hours. Here’s how to get from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur by bus and by train.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

1. Purchase your ticket.

You can either buy from your chosen bus company ticketing office or book online through their website. You can also book via 12go here: SINGAPORE-KUALA LUMPUR BUS!

The fare is between SGD 28 and SGD 80, depending on the bus company and class. There are regular and luxury buses.

When you book online, take a screenshot or print the confirmation.

Below are some of the bus companies plying the Singapore – Kuala Lumpur route:

  • KKKL Express Singapore
  • Starmart Express
  • Qistna Express
  • Golden Coach Express
  • Yakin Pacific Express
  • Grassland Singapore
  • Lapan Lapan Travel
  • The One Travel & Tours
  • Five Star Express
  • Sri Maju Group
  • Causeway Link Express

2. Go to the designated pick up point.

The pickup point varies depending on the bus company. Booking companies will inform you the bus stop where you can catch the bus. But the usual bus stop/pick up point is one of the following:

  • Queen Street
  • Golden Mile Tower
  • Park Royal Hotel
  • Concorde Hotel (Orchard Road)
  • Bugis MRT Exit D
  • Kovan Hub 206

Reminder! Be there at least thirty minutes before the scheduled departure time so you have time to fix things in case something untoward happens. In our case, although it’s for another route, when we booked with Easybook, our names were not included in the driver’s copy of the passenger list, so the bus left without us, even if we were actually early.

3. Go through Immigration check at the border.

Less than 30 minutes into your journey, you will reach the Singapore-Malaysia border. Do NOT forget to bring your passport with you and have it ready. That also means you shouldn’t sleep immediately after boarding.

When you reach the Immigration checkpoint, you need to get off the bus and go through the immigration process. Take all your belongings with you. Remember how the bus and the driver look. Take note of the plate number so you can easily find it on the other side later.

  • From Woodlands Checkpoint (Singapore), get on the bus to Johor Customs (Malaysia).
  • You will have to get off the bus again to get your passport stamped.
  • Find your bus and wait for the other passengers to be cleared.

The process can take about an hour but it depends on the volume of passengers. But try to be as quick as you can to avoid inconveniencing other passengers who might be waiting.

4. Get off at your designated stop.

KL Sentral, Kuala Lumpur’s Central Station, is the most usual final stop of these buses, but not always. Some terminate at TBS Kuala Lumpur (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) or other stops. Research the stop closest to your hotel.

From here, you can make your way to your hotel. The taxi is the most convenient choice. You’ll find lots of them waiting outside KL Sentral.

Taking the train takes the longest time and involves multiple transfers.

  • Purchase a train ticket. You can book in advance at the KTMB website .
  • Make your way to WOODLANDS TRAIN CHECKPOINT. Note that this is different from MRT Woodlands Station, which is located a bit far from the Woodlands Train Checkpoint. If you didn’t purchase a ticket in advance, you’ll find the ticketing office in the ground floor.
  • Go through Immigration and customs checks. Take all your belongings with you.
  • Take the KTM train (Tebrau Shuttle train) to JB (Johor Baru) Sentral Station. The fare is S$5 and travel time takes about five minutes.
  • From JB Sentral Station, take the train to Gemas Station. There are three trains that can take you to Gemas, but only the morning train will allow you to reach Kuala Lumpur within the same day because there is only one train that runs from Gemas directly to KL Sentral. That morning train is set to arrive in Gemas in the afternoon, just in time to catch the only train to KL Sentral. Travel time from JB Sentral to Gemas is almost 5 hours. Fare: MYR 21.
  • At Gemas, transfer to another train bound for KL Sentral. Travel time: about 2.5 hours. Fare: MYR 31.
  • At KL Sentral, make your way to your hotel. You can access the metro and the cabs from here.

We can’t indicate in this post the specific departure and arrival times of these trains because they keep on changing. But you can check the updated schedule on this site: KTMB TRAIN TIMETABLES .

Make sure that you don’t cross into Malaysia using the Johor immigration the day before a public holiday weekend (e.g. Chinese NY). If you do you will be faced with a 3 hour wait with 1000s of irate travellers in the Malaysian inbound immigration Hall. If you are forced to travel on the day before a malaysian public holiday(especially afternoon) use the train where the Malaysian immigration facilities are at woodlands Station. Yes it’s quite difficult to get to woodlands Station. But it will avoid the huge stress of the jostling at the johor immigration hall.

Hindi po ba super strict ang immigration sa KL and SG? From SG pupunta kami ng KL. 1st time traveler kasi yung kasama ko. Thanks ^__^

Hi LJ, sa case namin, di naman ganun ka-strict. Sa akin, walang questions. Sa mga kasama ko, may konting questions. Depende lang din kasi yan sa Immigration Officer. Make sure lang na meron kang return or onward ticket and proof of accommodations, in case hanapin.

Rasri

Hi! Quick question, If we are to take the Bus option ,crossing SG-KL. At Malaysian Immig, do they require an embarkation card ? If yes, Is it handed out on the SG bus that were boarding or are we to gather the immig card on the MY immigration?. First time doing the border crossing VIA Bus.

Please help, Thank You!

How to Travel from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur by Train, Bus, Car, and Plane

travel singapore to kuala lumpur by bus

Although they occupy what deceptively looks to be the same island and are only separated by 221 miles (355 kilometers), Singapore , an island city-state, and Kuala Lumpur , the capital of Malaysia , are in two separate countries. Traveling between the two by land can be tough, especially if you don't have a car, but it's very doable and extremely affordable to travel by bus.

Taking a bus from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia is an easy, inexpensive alternative to flying. Although AirAsia flights can occasionally be found on sale, prices are surprisingly high for the 55-minute flight between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, especially after adding luggage charges. Taking a bus eliminates the hassles of navigating two airports, security, and baggage counters for such a short journey. Locals who cross back and forth frequently for business often prefer to go by bus. You could take your own car, but you'll need to be upfront with the rental company that you plan to cross the border with it.

How to Get from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur

  • Bus: 5 hours, 15 minutes, $15+ USD
  • Car: 3 hours, 30 minutes, 221 miles (355 kilometers)
  • Flight: 1 hour, 45 minutes, $38+ USD

Crossing the Singapore-Malaysia Border

If you're flying from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, crossing the border is easily done as you depart Singapore Changi Airport and arrive in Kuala Lumpur International Airport . You'll simply pass through immigration and get your passport stamped, just like any other country. However, if you're crossing the border on the ground, the process is a little different depending on if you're traveling by bus or by car, but both are straightforward and usually expedient enough, barring rush-hour delays.

If you arrive at the border by bus, you will exit the bus and leave your checked luggage, but take your personal items with you. After being stamped out of Singapore, the bus will continue across the bridge for another 10 to 15 minutes, then you will exit at the Malaysian border to be stamped into Malaysia. Bring your luggage with you this time, as it must be screened before you enter Malaysia. If you or someone else is delayed, the bus will wait.

Before you rent a car in Singapore, double-check with the rental company that you'll be allowed to cross the border with it. To cross the border in a car, you must pass through the Tuas checkpoint where you'll park next to a booth to have your passport stamped out of Singapore and then continue on to the Malaysian checkpoint, where you'll go through the same process.

To prepare for a quick and easy crossing, make sure you have your exit card ready and mark the page in your passport that has your last stamp so that the border agent doesn't have to search for it. You should also have your entry card for Malaysia completely filled out before getting into the immigration queue. If coming from Malaysia into Singapore, be aware that Singapore has very strict customs laws and restrictions for bringing in alcohol and cigarettes. You must declare whatever you are carrying or risk a big fine .

Although changing countries by bus sounds potentially daunting, these buses aren't exactly rattletraps and the highway is well-maintained. Going overland to Kuala Lumpur is actually less hassle than dealing with airports and the stress of making such a short flight.

Singapore doesn't have a unified long-haul bus terminal, so companies aren't really consolidated under one roof. Instead, they depart from all over the city. Although there are exceptions, many bus companies operate from the lot in front of a large shopping compound known as the Golden Mile Complex, located south of Little India near Arab Street. A string of bus agencies occupies the front of the complex; buy your ticket at one of the counters inside. Aeroline , one of the more luxurious bus options, departs from HarbourFront Centre, a large mall by the Sentosa Gateway.

Prices and levels of luxury vary widely between bus companies. Tickets can be had for as cheap as $15 or even less, however, these buses don't always take the most efficient route and add an hour or more to the journey. The more comfortable buses can cost $36 or more and come equipped with leather seats; some have personal LCD entertainment systems in the seatbacks so that you can even watch a movie. The more luxurious bus companies provide a snack, meal, or drink served by an attendant.

Many airlines offer non-stop service between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur including: Jetstar, Scoot, AirAsia, Malindo Air, Ethiopian, Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines. For the cheapest flights, first check with carriers like Scoot, Jetstar, and Air Asia since they tend to have the best deals.

If you choose to take a road trip form Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, the way there is pretty easy, but it will take you about 3 hours and 30 minutes to arrive and you should expect tolls and be prepared for the border crossing with your passport and proper documents. Before you get gas in Singapore, try to wait until you've crossed the border into Malaysia where fuel is much cheaper.

From Singapore, you should first navigate to the Tuas checkpoint to cross the border. After you've crossed the border at Tuas, continue onto AH2, which you will stay on for 294 kilometers, or about 181 miles. When you are getting close, you can follow the signs for Kuala Lumpur.

What to See in Kuala Lumpur

When visiting the Malaysian capital, tourists will probably want to spend most of their time in the city center where skyscrapers like the Petronas Twin Towers dominate the skyline. It's worth it to take a trip up the towers and walk on the connecting bridge at least once. Outside the city center, you can explore the other neighborhoods that contribute to Malaysia's diverse cultural landscape, such as Kampung Baru, a traditional Malay area, Chinatown, and Little India.

There are tons of great hotels to stay in and lots of shopping malls to explore , but it might be worth your time to visit some natural attractions inside and outside the city like the Batu Caves , the Bukit Nanas Forest, or the Perdana Botanical Gardens .

The bus from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur takes a little over five hours.

Tickets start at around $15 for a basic seat, but increase depending on bus amenities.

The flight from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur takes about 1 hour, 45 minutes.

On the contrary, KL Sentral will give you direct access to the city.

Average time & cost

Singapore-to-Kuala-Lumpur-Bus-timing

The average time of this bus trip from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur is 4 to 5 hours . However, sometimes it takes 7 hours due to heavy traffic.

And the cost of a bus ticket can be as low as S$ 15.00 to S$ 40.00, which is really affordable for every passenger.

How to buy a bus ticket? (Online & offline)

Buying a bus ticket is not something that could be bothering. As online and offline, both options are available to book your ticket.

Online purchasing is more convenient and hassle-free as you don’t have to wait in a crowd. Moreover, some websites give such alluring sales on ticket prices that you can’t resist.

And if you don’t know from which website you can book a bus ticket, then I would suggest 12GoAsia , which I always prefer as it offers the most affordable price on any ticket.

Golden-Mile-Complex

If you don’t like online purchasing and want to buy tickets on the spot, you can always have an offline purchasing option. Just go to the Golden Mile Complex, where you’ll get several bus companies selling their tickets.

And if you manage to reach the bus station earlier, you can get on any bus that is departing for Kuala Lumpur. Because most of the buses that serve on the route from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur are not full so you can fit there easily.

Things you should know before you make your bus trip.

As you are crossing the border of Singapore and Malaysia, there are some protocols and restrictions that you must follow.

Make sure you have your passport with you, and the passport should be valid. If your nationality requires a visa to enter Malaysia, then you must prepare your visa before departure.  Make sure you convert your S$ (Singapore dollar) into MYR (Malaysian ringgit). At the Malaysian border, you may be asked to give your fingerprint , and at the same time, they will scan all of your luggage for security purposes.

Things you can do after arriving in KL

  • Depending on your travel purpose, you can do numerous things in Kuala Lumpur . But after a long journey, the first thing that I would suggest is to take a cup of coffee for refreshment.
  • Kuala Lumpur has some renewed Mamak stalls that will offer you delicious Malay food as a meal. So, you can satisfy your hunger here.
  • Now, the shopping malls and markets that are placed here and there in Kuala Lumpur will make you do some shopping for sure!
  • And you certainly can’t resist the attractions of KL such as KL Tower, Petronas twin towers, Bukit Bintang, and so on.

Pros & cons of bus travel

As we mentioned before, the pros of bus travel are that it is cheap and accessible.  But it doesn’t offer you the best transport service. You might have to wait for hours at the bus station for your expected bus.  And if you are stuck in heavy traffic during the travel, the journey would become more troublesome. Moreover, often the bus gets cancelled, and they will put you on the later bus, which is a complete waste of time.

Q1. How much does the bus ticket cost?

The bus ticket price depends on which bus operator and types of bus you choose to travel. The average ticket price for Singapore to Kuala Lumpur bus is S$ 15.00 to S$ 40.00 .

Kita Food Festival returns to Kuala Lumpur in September 2024 and Singapore from January to March 2025

' src=

Food-lovers rejoice as  Kita Food Festival returns to Malaysia and Singapore for its fourth instalment, kicking off in Kuala Lumpur from September 4 – 8, then Singapore from January to March 2025. This annual celebration of Southeast Asia’s growing culinary culture will see the finest chefs and industry pioneers from across the region gather for a series of Four Hand Dinners and Kitchen Takeovers, culminating in a Big Sunday Barbecue and F&B industry thought leadership events.

This year, the Kuala Lumpur Weekender will introduce A Food Affair on September 7, which is an evolution of its Kita Conversations symposium on innovation and authority in food. The full day event will include keynote speakers and fireside talks by food experts from around the region; a series of interactive masterclasses in both food, wine and beverages; as well as a vibrant marketplace with artisan food and produce from local farms and producers.

In Singapore, Kita Conversations will partner with Synthesis, a creative data house that uses Open Source Intelligence to map what the world will be eating in decades to come. One of Synthesis’ most recent reports, “Menu 2033: The Future of Food”, uses computer modelling and analytical techniques to develop simulations of plausible futures of food, which they then cook and present to diners. Kita Conversations will kick off with three seminars in January and February, exploring topics such as how we source food in a resource-challenged world, how we stretch the food that we have to feed the world, and how we find alternative food crops. This seminar series will lead into a large symposium aimed at gathering 350 – 400 F&B professionals, educators and enthusiasts for a full day of keynote presentations and industry sharing sessions.

Kita Food Festival is the brainchild of Darren Teoh, chef patron of Malaysia’s only two-Michelin star restaurant, Dewakan; Leisa Tyler, food journalist and owner of Singapore-based farm to table company, Weeds & More; and Adrian Yap, whose companies, Tiffin Culinary and Freeform, lead the way for Malaysia-based F&B-centric pop-up, arts and music events. Kita Food Festival’s goal is to highlight Southeast Asia’s emerging culinary scene as well as inspire a new generation of talents by exposing them to a community of chefs, producers, and game changers in the industry.

Since its debut in 2021, Kita Food Festival has hosted events in multiple Malaysian destinations –Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi and Kuching – as well as Singapore. Each year, Kita Food Festival reinforces its commitment to community and collective growth, embodying its name ‘Kita’ – meaning ‘Us’ or ‘We’ in Malay – by uniting food enthusiasts in a celebration of diversity and empowering the exchange of knowledge on sustainable food practices.Through its passion for the industry and dedication to innovation, Kita Food Festival is not just an event; it’s the vanguard of a movement towards a more connected and sustainable future for food and beverage in Southeast Asia.

“For Kita’s next chapter, we aim to dig deeper into the narratives of local, innovation and sustainability. Malaysia will host guest chefs from across the Asian region, with dinners focusing on true farm to table relationships, or modernisations of a local cuisine, and masterclasses and talks exploring topics such as ancient fermentation techniques. The Singapore leg will be centred around the future of food globally, a nod to its growing status as an international city, but with its roots still very much in Southeast Asia,” commented Leisa Tyler, co-founder of Kita Food Festival, on this year’s festival.

The Malaysian dining series will include a lot of storytelling and strong narrative events, including Mystery Box menus that highlight local producers and terroir, to exploring the depths of cuisine of different cultures. The full list of dinners will be revealed in late July. A snapshot of what will be on offer include:

  • Prin Polsuk of one-Michelin star restaurant and #29 on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2024, Samrub Samrub Thai(Bangkok, Thailand) will be bringing Southern Thai Fisherman cuisine to Raw Kitchen Hall, promising a unique casual dinner that reflects the food security, diversity, and community-driven cuisine of the Island natives of the Southern Thai gulf.
  • Ben Devlin of Pipit in Pottsville, recognised as a Regional Restaurant of the Year finalist in Sydney Morning Herald’s Good Food Guide 2023 (New South Wales, Australia), will run a Kitchen Takeover at Yellow Fin Horse, featuring native Australian bush foods cooked with Malaysian-grown vegetables, native fruits and proteins.
  • Hans Christian of August (Jakarta, Indonesia), #46 on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, returns to Kita Food Festival to spotlight the emerging trend of New Nusantara cuisine at Akâr Dining alongside Aidan Low.
  • A Food Affair will make its debut with keynote talks and masterclasses from the likes of Vanika Choudhary ofNoon (Mumbai, India) and Ben Devlin of Pipit (New South Wales, Australia).
  • As part of the Kita Food Festival tradition, the Big Sunday Barbecue will wrap up the KL Weekender with names like Pete Smit of Dirty Supper (Singapore), 2-Michelin star Dewakan (Malaysia) and home cook internet sensation Anis Nabilah (Malaysia).

Else Retreats a trendy lifestyle property in Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown district will serve as the chef hub for the KL Weekender, being home to two dinners and other pre-festival other activations and special staycation packages which will be revealed at the end of July.

travel singapore to kuala lumpur by bus

The festival has also brought back its young chef mentoring programme, Kita Horizons, for its third year, this time on a larger scale. Partnering with Danish dairy company, Arla Foods, Kita Horizons sees fifteen young, motivated chefs experience parts of the industry that they would otherwise not gain access to. Back in May, the young chefs took part in a full-day of masterclasses led by their mentors – Jack Weldie of Chipta 11A, Lim Heng Kit of LI Restaurant and LOCUS, and Yavhin Siriwardhana of Nadodi – followed by a special presentation by Chef Grzegorz Odolak, Executive Chef of Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur and an exclusive tour of the hotel’s kitchens and farm. The next day, the fifteen young chefs set out on an excursion to Natural Tropical Farm, Chocolate Concierge and A Little Farm On The Hill to learn about different farming methods. Equipped with this new-found knowledge, the participants are now gearing up for a series of dining events which will require them to integrate dairy products with local Southeast Asian flavours and produce. Their journey will culminate on September 8 at the invite-only Thank You Dinner, where they will cook with grade two vegetables and what are often considered secondary cuts of meat.

This year’s Horizons programme continues to drive its vision of inspiring the next generation of ‘proudly Malaysian’ chefs. Furthermore, the programme hopes to inspire an appreciation for producers and manufacturers who play an integral role in the food chain.

Director and co-founder of Kita Food Festival, Darren Teoh commented: “Kita Horizons stands as a beacon of change within our industry. The programme addresses critical disparities between emerging cooks and their culinary roots by fostering a deeper appreciation for food sourcing and cultivation.”

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s Road Transport Department (JPJ) had seized two tour buses after their drivers were found to have no driving licences as at 9.30am on July 2.

JPJ’s senior enforcement director (legal division) Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said the two tour buses were temporarily seized during the crackdown on tour bus companies that began on July 2.

“The bus companies were contacted and told to send replacement drivers before they were allowed to leave at about 9.30am,” he said, adding that the companies would be issued summonses.

Mr Muhammad Kifli added that a tour bus driver, in his 30s, was also detained after failing a drug test.

A check on the drivers of a further 16 tour buses and five express buses came back negative for drug use.

Some 70 JPJ, police, National Anti-drug Agency and tourism ministry officers were involved in the joint operation, from 6am till 12pm on July 2.

The motorcycle was believed to have “self-skidded” at the junction of Petir Road and Gangsa Road.

Mr Muhammad Kifli also said that Johor JPJ officers had temporarily detained a tour bus entering Malaysia after it was found that the Singaporean driver did not possess a licence.

The crackdown on tour bus companies may be extended beyond July 31, said Mr Muhammad Kifli.

“If we are still not satisfied with the situation, the operations will carry on till a directive is issued by the (transport) minister,” he told reporters at the JPJ Enforcement Centre in Gombak, Selangor.

On July 1, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced a major crackdown on tour bus and van operators following the fatal accident involving a tour bus.

On June 29, the tour bus carrying 21 people overturned while descending from Genting Highlands, killing two Chinese tourists.

Initial investigation revealed that the 32-year-old bus driver had 27 previous traffic summonses for various offences and did not have a licence.

The company was found to be operating without a permit for four months, using 15 permits for tour buses and 18 for factory buses.

The driver has since been remanded for further investigations.

Mr Loke said he had instructed the Land Public Transport Agency to take stern action against the company, including suspension and revocation of its operating licence, if it is found to have violated regulations. – THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
