travel online philippines review

To start off, I already searched the Trip Advisor forum and came across "travelonline". Since there is a " http://travelonline.com " in existence which is different from " http://travelonline.ph ", I wanted to ask for clarifications.

Has anyone ever used " http://www.travelonline.ph " Hotel, tour, or any other arrangement services? If so, what were peoples experiences with this company. I want to be cautious because it's hard handing over your credit card number to someone you don't know.

' class=

hi ,well they have nearly .5 million likes on facebook and respond quickly to enquiries https://www.facebook.com/TravelOnline.ph?fref=ts

Its actually .385 Million but whats 115000 extra likes between friends....facebook friends!!!!

excuse my ignorance as i do not have facebook. but how can likes on facebook contribute to to legitimacy?

http://www.earthcam.com/cams/philippines/boracay/

Thanks Kevin.

@Al22tec very good point.

There is no correlation between likes and legitimacy. It just means that this firms facebook page is liked by 385000 facebook users who viewed it.

Legitimacy may be better confirmed if that many members used their services and LIKED!!!

where did i say likes equals legitimacy?it would be very hard to get that amount of likes if at least some hadnt used its services -i simply gave the op another option for checking those who may have used it .

I venture to guess that some use O Desk services or such to hit like on websites such as facebook. Hard to see a travel agent with more likes than Arnel Pineda, lead singer for Journey and Philippine ICON.

Why Choose a Travel Agency in the Philippines?

Travel agencies play a crucial role in crafting memorable travel experiences. They possess the local know-how, connections, and resources to make your trip effortless and enjoyable. Let's delve into why you should consider a travel agency for your next Filipino adventure.

Benefits of Using a Travel Agency

Time and Effort Savings: The travel agencies take the hassle out of planning. From booking flights and accommodations to arranging transportation and sightseeing activities, they handle it all. This allows you to save time and avoid stress, letting you focus solely on enjoying the experience.

Customized Experiences: Travel agencies can tailor trips according to your preferences. Whether you prefer adventurous outdoor activities or tranquil beach holidays, they can create a personalized itinerary that fits your travel style perfectly.

Insider Knowledge: Travel agencies have in-depth knowledge of the local scene. They can recommend lesser-known attractions, off-the-beaten-track locations, and unique cultural experiences that you might otherwise miss.

Personal Anecdotes or Examples

Let me share a personal experience. On my trip to the Philippines, I enlisted the services of a local travel agency. What struck me was their attention to detail and personal touch. They suggested a visit to the Chocolate Hills in Bohol, an attraction I hadn't heard of before.

Chocolate Hills in Bohol, Philippines

The sight of over a thousand symmetrical, grass-covered limestone mounds, turning chocolate brown in the dry season, was surreal. Without the agency's local insight, I would have missed out on this mesmerizing spectacle.

Safety and Risk Management

Travel agencies can also provide peace of mind regarding safety. In unfamiliar territories, unforeseen situations can arise. Whether it's a sudden change of weather at a beach resort or an unexpected closure of an attraction due to maintenance, travel agencies can navigate these disruptions. They have contingency plans in place and can swiftly provide alternative arrangements to ensure your trip remains smooth. This is especially valuable in a diverse country like the Philippines, where each island offers a unique set of attractions, cultures, and climates.

Travel Safety

The content herein is based on my personal experiences and insights gained over the years. It's important to remember that each person's travel needs and preferences are unique, and what works for one might not work for another. That's where the versatility and flexibility of travel agencies shine, and why I consider them a valuable ally in my journeys.

Keys to Consider When Choosing Travel Agencies in the Philippines

Tour operators remain responsible for their services. Although their roles sometimes overlap with travel agents, they can market directly to customers. Similarly, travel agents can curate and promote their own packages to clients. Making the right choice of a travel agency can be the difference between a memorable trip and an unfortunate experience. Here are a few factors to consider when selecting a travel agency in the Philippines.

Travel Agencies in the Philippines

Travel Safety

Safety is paramount when traveling. A reliable travel agency should have a strong focus on traveler's safety, providing useful advice, and ensuring that all services, including transportation and accommodations, meet safety standards. They should also have a swift response mechanism for any emergencies that may arise during your trip.

Expertise with Local Knowledge

A travel agency's local expertise is another crucial factor to consider. This includes understanding the best times to visit various destinations, knowing the local customs and culture, and having access to local resources. An agency with strong local knowledge can provide an authentic and enriching travel experience that you might not get by planning the trip on your own.

Convenience

Convenience plays a big role in enhancing your overall travel experience. Look for an travel agent that provides a seamless experience, from inquiry and booking to trip execution. This might include things like an easy-to-navigate website, convenient payment methods, a responsive customer service team, and personalized services that cater to your specific needs and preferences.

Range of Services Offered

The range of services offered by the travel agent is another important factor. A full-service agency that can handle all aspects of your trip, including airfare, accommodation, tours, transport, and even visa assistance, can save you a lot of time and hassle.

Price and Value for Money

While price is an important factor, the cheapest option may not always provide the best value. Consider what's included in the package and assess if it offers good value for your money. A slightly pricier package that includes all services, offers great experiences, and ensures your safety might provide better value in the long run.

Navigating the Online Presence of Travel Agencies

With the internet being a major source of information, it's important to evaluate a travel agency's online presence.

Navigating the Online Presence of Travel Agencies in the Philippines

Hotel and Resorts Reservations Vacation Packages to Asia

Check out the agency's online platforms for their vacation packages. Look for details about hotel and resort reservations in the Philippines and other Asian countries. Read through descriptions, check the inclusions, compare prices, and review terms and conditions. User reviews can also provide helpful insights.

International Tour Packages

If you're a resident of the Philippines looking for outbound travel options, check the agency's offerings for international tour packages. An travel agent with a wide range of international tours indicates strong global connections and a broad service range.

International Air Transport Association (IATA)

The agency's affiliation with recognized international organizations like the International Air Transport Association (IATA) is a good sign of credibility. IATA accreditation ensures that the travel agent adheres to industry standards and best practices, providing an extra layer of assurance for travelers.

By keeping these factors in mind, you can make an informed decision while choosing a travel agent for your next adventure in the Philippines.

Travel Agencies and the Impact of COVID-19

The global pandemic has caused a seismic shift in the travel industry. The once-thriving sector faced unprecedented challenges as countries closed their borders and travel restrictions became the new norm. Yet, amidst these adversities, travel agencies in the Philippines have demonstrated resilience and adaptability.

COVID-19

Many agencies pivoted to offer virtual tours, allowing travel enthusiasts to explore new destinations from the safety of their homes. Others have focused on promoting local tourism, encouraging Filipinos to discover the beauty of their own country.

Moreover, travel agencies have elevated their safety measures to ensure the health and wellbeing of travelers. This includes organizing trips to destinations with high health and safety standards, coordinating with suppliers who uphold rigorous sanitation protocols, and providing up-to-date travel advisories to clients.

Pre-trip health screenings, smaller travel groups, private transfers, contactless check-ins, and provision of sanitation essentials have become common features in holiday packages and bespoke services. By adopting these measures, travel agencies are playing their part in restoring traveler confidence and shaping the new normal in travel.

How to avoid travel scams in the Philippines

Each year, the Philippines welcomes countless tourists who want to spend their vacation in the breathtaking landscapes and explore its top tourist spots , like popular Philippine beach destinations Boracay and Palawan , to historical landmarks like the walled city of Intramuros in Manila .

taxi scams in the Philippines

Most common taxi scams in Philippine airports involve drivers charging exaggerated fare rates to unsuspecting passengers, especially those who appear to be foreigners or not familiar with the place. This usually happens when drivers refuse to use the meter and instead negotiate a fixed price, often much higher than the standard rate.

Another tactic some taxi drivers use is telling passengers that the meter is broken. They may intentionally manipulate the meter to show overpriced fares or pretend that it's malfunctioning. Taxi drivers then give passengers a fixed rate, and passengers may end up paying more than the actual fare.

During peak hours, some taxi drivers will inform passengers that they will not use the meter because of the heavy traffic, and it's fair if you negotiate before riding the taxi.

Travelers in Manila should be mindful when taking taxis and be wary of drivers who may look suspicious. It's advisable to only rent cabs from reputable taxi companies or use ride-hailing apps like Grab, which provide transparent pricing and a safer alternative to traditional taxis. Additionally, you can book airport transfers before your arrival, which is much safer and more convenient.

Insist on using the meter to avoid falling victim to overpricing.

Don't ride the taxi if the driver says the meter is broken.

Make sure that the meter is running and reflects the distance traveled and fare.

Check the taxi's plate number and operator number before riding.

Download and use the Grab app or book airport transfers in advance with reputable travel agencies like Guide to the Philippines.

Philippine money exchange

Usually, money exchange scammers may approach tourists and will give you lower rates or show you outdated conversions. If you happen to avail yourself of their money exchange service, they'll count the correct amount of Philippine money in front of you and then tie a rubber band around it before giving it to you, without you noticing that they’ve already hidden some of the cash.

Read our Philippine money exchange guide and find out the current exchange rates to ensure you receive a fair deal.

Compare rates offered by different banks, reputable exchange counters, and online currency converters.

Avoid exchanging money with individuals on the street or in unauthorized establishments.

Count the Philippine money yourself before leaving the establishment.

Request a receipt or exchange slip with the amount exchanged, the exchange rate, and any applicable fees. This can serve as proof of the transaction and help resolve any discrepancies later on.

Pickpocket

Sometimes, as they approach you, they will speak kindly and use their charms to distract you without you knowing that someone is already getting into your pockets or bags. Pickpockets work discreetly, making it challenging for victims to notice the theft.

Keep your valuables secure and close to you. Use anti-theft bags, money belts, or hidden pouches. Instead of placing your bag on your back, put it infront of you where you can see it at all times.

Avoid carrying large amounts of cash or displaying expensive jewelry or gadgets in public.

Be aware of individuals who create unusual situations that could cause a distraction to you while someone else attempts to steal your belongings.

Avoid walking alone in dark or isolated areas, especially at night.

Travel package scams in the Philippines

There could be instances where fake travel agencies will offer you travel insurance by telling you about its affordable coverage and low-priced policies. Make sure to only avail yourself of insurance from trusted agencies and insurance companies to avoid travel insurance scams.

These travel agency scams in the Philippines may be hard to verify since most fake tour operators, especially those who sell on social media, could post fake reviews and ratings that tourists might believe are true. Once they catch your attention and you've already paid for your travel package, there are instances where tour operators will no longer communicate with you or will block you on social media platforms.

Make sure to only book with reputable and Department of Tourism-accredited travel agencies like Guide to the Philippines . As the largest marketplace for Philippine travel, Guide to the Philippines has the biggest selection of  Philippines travel packages , hotels , flights, ferry or sea transfers , day tours , airport pickup and drop-off services , car rental , and day passes with real customer reviews all on one website. Guide to the Philippines is also the recipient of the TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice Award for 2023 .

You can also join trusted Philippine online travel groups where most tourists share tips, recommendations, and legitimate travel agencies.

Before booking Philippine tours or travel packages, read reviews from previous customers and verify if the users are legitimate. Aside from their own website or social media account, check if they have reviews on Google or TripAdvisor.

Check if the travel agencies are registered with relevant tourism authorities like the Department of Tourism and look for accreditation numbers or certifications.

Ask questions if the offered price seems too good to be true, especially if it is much lower than those offered by other reputable operators. Unrealistic low prices could be a red flag for potential scams.

Review the terms and conditions of the travel package, including cancellation policies, refund procedures, and inclusions/exclusions.

Trusted travel agencies have physical offices; you can visit their office for a safer transaction.

Use secured and trusted payment methods such as credit cards or online payment platforms that offer buyer protection and dispute resolution mechanisms. Avoid paying in cash or through unsecured channels to minimize fraud or loss.

Airport scam

When this scam happened in 2015, most tourists wrapped plastic and duct tape around their bags and luggage to avoid it. Others also put padlocks on their belongings to secure them. Although efforts have been made to stop this scam, travelers still need to be careful. As of this writing, there are still cases or news reports about the "tanim-bala" scam, so it's advisable to stay vigilant and know how to prevent this from happening to you.

There's also the risk of bribery during immigration checks, where officials might ask for money to speed up the process. Another problem is luggage tampering, where bags are opened and valuables are stolen.

Keep your belongings secure by adding locks to your luggage.

Place your bag in front of you so you can easily keep an eye on it.

Be alert when your bags or luggage go through the x-ray machine.

Untuck your clothes when you're at the airport to ensure you don't get a bullet in your pockets.

If you still got a bullet in your bag without you knowing, don't touch the evidence. Instead, call your family, relatives, and an attorney.

Don't trust your belongings to anyone in the airport, even if these are airport personnel or officials.

Make sure you have all the travel documents you need and don't bribe the authorities to speed up the immigration process.

Card skimming is when small devices are secretly placed on ATM card slots or payment terminals. These devices capture information from credit or debit cards when they're used. Sometimes, hidden cameras or keypads are also set up to record PINs entered by people.

Once scammers have this information, they can make fake cards or unauthorized transactions. This could lead to them taking money from the victim's bank accounts or making fraudulent charges on their credit cards.

Card skimming devices are often well hidden, making them hard to spot. Victims may not realize their information was stolen until they see strange transactions on their account statements.

Inspect the card slot and keypad for any signs of tampering or unusual attachments. If anything looks suspicious, avoid using the machine and report it to the bank.

Cover the machine keypad with your hand or body when entering your PIN to prevent hidden cameras or keypad overlays from capturing your PIN information.

Never let your card out of your sight when making purchases in stores, restaurants, or malls with your credit cards or debit cards.

Whenever possible, use ATMs and card terminals located in well-lit, secure areas, such as inside bank branches or reputable establishments. Avoid using standalone ATMs in remote or poorly monitored locations, as they are more susceptible to skimming devices.

Always check your personal bank online app and statements for any unauthorized transactions.

Car rental

Similar to travel booking scams, car or motorcycle rental scams may also ask you to pay in advance or for a downpayment before they deliver the unit, and then no car or motorcycle will be delivered to you.

You can book car rental and motorcycle rentals from trusted agencies or rental companies to avoid these kinds of scams.

Before booking a vehicle rental, research recommended rental companies with positive reviews and established reputations.

Avoid deals that seem too good to be true, as they may be indicative of fraudulent practices.

Carefully review the contract or rental terms and conditions, and pay attention to insurance coverage and any potential additional fees.

Inspect the rental vehicle for any pre-existing damages or mechanical issues before accepting it. It will be better if you document any discrepancies with videos, photographs, or written notes to avoid disputes upon return.

8. Horse-drawn carriage scams

Horse-drawn carriage in Intramuros

However, some kalesa drivers may engage in scams, like horse-drawn carriage scams, commonly known as "kalesa" scams. These scams typically involve dishonest kalesa drivers taking advantage of tourists, especially foreigners, who are not aware of the pricing.

The scam happens when drivers don't tell tourists the price until the end of the tour and then charge an overpriced rate. Usually, if tourists pay for the kalesa ride before the tour, they are provided with limited time, tours, and historical insights. Sometimes, kalesa drivers will give you a rate before your trip. Then, they will let you know that it is just a starting fare and that you should pay for additional charges.

Negotiate fares beforehand.

Clarify the route and destinations to kalesa drivers before paying for the fare to prevent unexpected detours or extra charges.

Be wary of suspicious behaviors that could pressure you into additional services.

Research or seek recommendations to other tourists who have availed of a horse-drawn carriage tour.

"Budol-budol" scams are a common trick or deception in the Philippines that target unsuspecting individuals. Scammers often work in groups, approach victims in public places, and pretend to be friendly strangers or representatives of legitimate organizations. They use persuasive techniques, such as flattery, charm, and false promises, to gain the trust of their targets.

Some "budol-budol" incidents also happen when they are keeping eye contact or physical contact with you, which could hypnotize people and make them fall into their tactics. Once they've gained trust, they trick victims into giving them money, valuables, or personal information.

Common tactics include offering fake prizes or rewards or posing as charity workers soliciting donations. Victims may be tricked into handing over cash, jewelry, electronic gadgets, or even their bank details, only to realize later that they have been deceived.

"Budol-budol" scams do not only happen in public places but also at home, where you can be tricked via phone calls or messages, and shopping delivery.

Exercise caution when approached by strangers offering unsolicited deals or requesting personal information.

Avoid eye and physical contact, like handshakes to strangers.

Maintain awareness of common scam tactics and avoid overly persuasive strangers to help you protect against falling prey to budol-budol schemes.

Love scams

Scammers use stolen photos to create fake profiles on dating apps, websites or social media. These Filipino dating scams can also happen in public places like tourist spots, bars, or beaches, where scammers will approach you and start a conversation.

After forming a connection, the scammer tricks their victim by pretending to love them and gaining their trust. They make up detailed stories about tough times or urgent needs for money, making the victim feel worried and emotionally weak. Eventually, they ask for money, pretending it's for emergencies, trips, or investments.

Unfortunately, many victims fall prey to these scams, sending money or sharing personal information with the scammer, only to realize later that they've been duped. Love scams can have devastating financial and emotional consequences, leaving victims feeling betrayed, embarrassed, and financially drained.

Be careful when forming online relationships, especially with individuals you've never met in person.

Be wary of money requests or financial assistance from someone you've only recently connected with online or in person.

Verify the identity of the person through video calls or other means that can help confirm their authenticity.

Be vigilant for red flags, such as inconsistencies in their stories or reluctance to meet in person that can help identify potential scammers early on.

Spiked drinks

Victims of spiked drinks may experience loss of consciousness, memory lapses, dizziness, confusion, and other adverse effects. In some cases, drink spiking can lead to more severe consequences, including robbery, sexual assault, or other forms of violence.

Never leave your drinks unattended.

Do not accept drinks from strangers.

Remain vigilant, watch out for suspicious behavior, and trust one's instincts.

If you or someone suspects a drink has been spiked or if you observe suspicious activity, seek help from friends, bar staff, or authorities immediately.

Travel in groups and look out for one another.

Public WiFi scams in the Philippines

One common tactic is the creation of fake WiFi networks. These accesses usually have names similar to legitimate ones, then trick users into connecting to them instead. Once connected, cybercriminals or hackers can monitor users' online activities, steal login credentials, or inject malicious content into their browsing sessions.

Another scheme involves the use of phishing websites or fake login pages, which look like legitimate services, to trick users into entering their personal information. Online scams in the Philippines can happen anywhere, so make sure you don't connect to suspicious public internet or WiFi.

If possible, avoid connecting to public networks or WiFi, and bring your hotspot or use your mobile data instead.

Avoid accessing or opening sensitive information, such as online banking or personal emails, while connected to unsecured WiFi.

Having access to emergency contacts is crucial in situations involving suspicion of scams or other fraudulent activities. If you encounter anything suspicious or feel you may be the target of a scam, knowing whom to contact can help you seek assistance promptly. Here are essential emergency contacts to keep when you are traveling in the Philippines:

How to report travel scam in the Philippines

To report travel scams:

Act promptly and provide detailed information to the appropriate authorities.

If you've been a victim, start gathering as much information as possible about the incident.

Contact the local authorities, such as the Philippine National Police (PNP), through their hotline number 117 or visit the nearest police station to file a report.

It's also advisable to report travel and cyber scams to the Department of Transportation or DOTr with commuter hotline 09209643687 and hotline 1326. You can also send a message and report to the official page of the DOTr Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation (SAICT).

To deal with travel scams, it's best to do research on the travel agency and make sure to only trust reputable ones. Don't pay for anything if it seems suspicious, and trust your instincts. As much as possible, visit the main office of the travel agencies for safe transactions.

Planning a trip can be easier through an online travel agency than if you handle each aspect of the planning separately. You can book hotels, air travel, rental cars, and more through a single site, and booking everything together sometimes results in discounts. By inputting a destination, a range of dates, and other preferences, you will see a list of options for each aspect of travel.

The best online travel agencies offer options from the largest number of airlines, hotels, car rental agencies, and more. Look for sites that offer discounts for combining reservations for different aspects of your trip. For example, the best sites will have lower rates if you book both plane tickets and a hotel through their services. The best sites also provide reviews from customers who actually have booked through the service. These are our top picks.

Final Verdict

Frequently asked questions, methodology, best overall : booking.com.

 Booking.com

This industry leader offers one of the most comprehensive trip planning platforms on the Internet.

Lots of options to choose from

Interface is easy to use

Numerous filters to customize your search

Tricky to tell whether changes/cancellations can be made with Booking.com or the vendor directly

Booking.com was founded in 1996 and has grown into an industry leader that stands out for being one of the most comprehensive trip planning platforms out there. From one website, you can compare and book accommodations, flights (including one-way and multi-city flights), sightseeing activities, and even airport taxis. The website lists more than 28 million accommodation options, from hotels, hostels, and B&Bs to vacation homes and luxury resorts—you can browse more choices per destination on Booking.com than other online travel agencies. The website also performs well on cost and typically returns lower-than-average prices for flights and hotels.

Booking.com's interface is also easy to use. On the home page, search for a hotel by entering your chosen destination and dates. Then, use the extensive list of filters—such as price range and distance from the city center—to narrow the results down and find the best fit. You can also search for a specific hotel, or seek inspiration by clicking through options grouped by destination or property type or by topic such as the country’s best Michelin-starred hotel restaurants or the top cities for vegan travelers. The flights, car rental, and other tabs are just as intuitive.

Best Budget : Skyscanner

 Skyscanner

You can compare prices across airlines, hotels, and car rentals.

Simple interface

Option to toggle searches between specific dates or by monthly calendars

Search Everywhere button is great for spontaneous planners

Extra clicks are required to make a final purchase

Must read fine print for changes/cancellations—may need to deal directly with the vendor

Ads on the sidebar can be distracting

Find deals on airfare, hotels, and car rentals with an aggregator site like Skyscanner , which uses a metasearch engine to compare prices from all online travel agencies and the airline, hotel, or car rental company in question. Run searches with fixed dates, opt to compare airfare prices month to month, or click “Cheapest Month.” Searches also include options for nearby airports or non-stop flights only. With hotel searches, you can choose to select only from properties with free cancellation, a cleanliness rating of 4.5/5 or higher, or 3- or 4-starred hotels only. Car rental searches include an option to select “return car to different location.”

Once you’ve found the best rate, click on the link to be redirected to the third-party site to make your booking. Feeling spontaneous? The Search Everywhere button on the homepage offers a list of the cheapest flight deals for destinations both locally and across the world—just plug in your departure airport first.

Best Price Predictor : Hopper

The company claims a 95 percent accuracy rate at predicting when flights and hotel rates will be cheapest.

Color-coded system makes it easy to determine cheapest days to buy

App is easy to use

Option to track flights and receive alerts when the best time to buy arises

Some have mentioned the app functions better as a research tool than a booking tool

Unclear whether Hopper will price match if you find a cheaper flight elsewhere

Hopper is a travel app available on iOS and Android that aims to help travelers save on airfare by usng historical data and their own algorithm to predict when flights will be cheapest. Just type in where and when you’d like to fly and Hopper will present you with a color-coded pricing calendar indicating how much tickets are likely to cost. (Green is the least expensive, then yellow, orange, and red for most expensive.) Hopper will also recommend you either buy now or wait, or you can choose to watch a trip and receive notifications on the best time to buy. In addition, the app has expanded to offer hotel and car rental price predictions, too.

Some newer features since the app’s inception in 2009 include an option to freeze a price for a limited time—for an extra fee—as well as exclusive app-only discounts. Hopper is free to download, and you can choose to book directly through the app, though some users mentioned they use Hopper as more of a research tool before booking directly with the airline or hotel. The company claims a 95 percent accuracy rate at predicting flight rates up to a year ahead.

Most Innovative : Kiwi.com

This metasearch engine scours the web to piece together the ideal itinerary using planes, trains, buses, and more.

Creative itineraries get you where you need to go, especially if you’ve got a multi-stop trip

Kiwi Guarantee offers rebooking or cancellation protections

Nomad option appeals to travelers with a lot of flexibility

Creative itineraries mean you may not fly out of the same airport you flew into

Kiwi Guarantee has an additional fee

Charges all-in-one fee for booking flights, trains, buses (though you can always purchase a la carte)

Travelers planning multi-city destinations and seeking a bargain, as well as those looking to take planes, trains, and automobiles to get there, might consider Kiwi . Kiwi is a metasearch engine that scours and pieces together itineraries from various airlines (even if they don’t have a codeshare agreement), considers multiple airports (even if your arrival airport is different from departure), and offers booking options, whether you’re looking at very specific dates or more general ones (up to 60 nights).

Some will find the ability to make multiple bookings for a particular trip more convenient than going at it manually several different times, though note that you must opt into the Kiwi Guarantee program to access rebooking and refund protections should your reservation change or be canceled. Kiwi’s Nomad option allows you to plug in a bunch of destinations you’d like to visit and the length of your intended stay, and the website will churn out the most affordable itineraries for review.

Best for Eco-Conscious : Kind Traveler

A give-and-get business model means booking accommodations with exclusive perks, a donation to environmental organizations, and more.

All participating hotels include a local give-back component

Exclusive savings and perks

Participating hotels are located in some of the most beautiful places in the world

Inventory is much smaller compared to other booking platforms

Some of the amenities mentioned are based on availability only

In 2022, Kind Traveler (an online trave agency focused on hotel bookings) announced an increase in environmentally and socially conscious hotels, charity donations, voluntourism opportunities, and additional perks like waived resort fees or a welcome amenity.

Unlock exclusive hotel rates and perks from participating Kind Traveler hotels with a minimum $10/night minimum donation to a local charity. For example, stay at the Six Senses Laamu in the Maldives and receive up to $33 off the nightly rate and perks such as a food and beverage credit and an Earth Lab or Alchemy Bar workshop when you make a donation to Manta Trust. The organization funds coastal research to protect the island nation’s large yet fragile population of reef mantas.

Select from more than 140 participating hotels from the Hawaiian Islands to Bozeman, Montana, and the Maldives. Charities include wildlife, human rights, arts, education, and environmental preservation organizations.

Best for Social Impact : I Like Local

Choose from a host of travel experiences with the peace of mind that 100 percent of the cost goes directly to local partners.

Social impact mission woven into organization’s business model

Immersive experiences led by local guides

Range of experiences offered

May not be best fit for those seeking upscale, luxury experiences and stays

Can’t sort experiences by a list of countries (though an interactive map is available)

No experiences outside of Africa and Asia

For an online travel agency with a booking platform designed to route dollars spent directly to the communities travelers intend to visit, consider I Like Local . Visit the website to browse a host of travel experiences in countries including Indonesia, Kenya, and Cambodia. Experiences include homestays and farmstays as well as wellness and culturally oriented experiences—from cooking and cycling tours to weaving classes.

To search for an experience, select from drop-down items like travel dates and experience categories, or view a global map and click on a country to view experiences that way.

The platform got its start in 2014 and has grown to 4,000 local hosts across nearly 20 countries. As a social impact organization, 100 percent of each booking fee goes to local hosts. To date, 16,000 travelers have booked with I Like Local.

Best for Design-Forward Homestays : Plum Guide

Browse and book seriously vetted, design-forward vacation homes.

Highly curated inventory of vacation rentals across the world

Design-forward

Thorough vetting process

Does not publish guest reviews

Other platforms have homes available across more destinations

When it comes to booking a vacation home, serviced apartment, or condo, travelers are spoiled for choice. Plum Guide is an online travel agency that specializes in accommodations—though not just any home makes its directory. The company claims that each potential home listed on its site must jump through 150 hoops to be included, from internet speed and mattress and pillow quality to the showers’ water pressure and the home’s proximity to dining, shopping, and attractions.

Search by a featured collection on the website such as “ pet-friendly homes ” or “one-of-a-kind homes in Palm Springs.” Scroll to the bottom of its homepage to view its top destinations, as well as a list of all destinations where Plum Guide homes are available, including Barbados, Mexico, Portugal, Switzerland, the U.S., and Turkey. Note: From the top right-hand corner of the site, use the dropdown menu to select currency of choice.

As long as you know what you value most out of your travel experience—such as affordability, social impact, or luxe accommodations—there’s an online travel agency to help plan your next trip. Be sure to read the fine print, as some agencies are third-party websites and not direct vendors. If you're not sure where to start, Booking.com is your best bet for a smooth user experience and hard-to-beat offers on flights, hotels, and other travel arrangements.

What Is the Biggest Travel Agency?

Our choice for best overall, Booking.com, is known as an industry leader with listings for all major hotels, airlines, car rental companies, and more. It boasts more choices for accommodations per destination than any other site, and we found its interface to be user-friendly.

Are Online Travel Agencies Worth It?

This depends on your needs and priorities. The best online travel agencies certainly can save time by booking everything all at once. However, if you're someone who is good at haggling and enjoys the details of planning a trip, you might be able to find better deals by reaching out to hotels or other destinations and speaking to someone personally.

Is It Cheaper to Book Online Than With a Travel Agent?

Not always. A travel agent you know and trust should have the experience and connections to find deals that can match or surpass what you'll find online. Additionally, if something goes wrong, travel agents provide you with an actual person you can use as an advocate to correct the problem . But if you don't have access to a good travel agent, online sites still provide plenty of ways to streamline planning and save money .

We considered dozens of online travel agencies and narrowed down the options based on user experience, volume and quality of inventory, unique offerings and specials, and customer reviews. We also assessed travel companies’ environmentally and socially conscious policies.

Online travel agencies seen as future of Philippine tourism

travel online philippines review

As the demand for travel increases in the Philippines, online travel agencies like  Traveloka  and Expedia are fast becoming the go-to booking platform for many savvy tourists.   They are easy-to-use and offer competitive pricing especially for budget travelers. Complemented by their mobile apps , these service providers make booking a flight or a hotel possible anytime and anywhere.

Philippine tourism is looking up as the volume of local and foreign travelers grows year over year. According to the Department of Tourism (DoT), 532,757 foreigners flocked to the country in May of 2017 alone. Meanwhile, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported that three in five Filipinos aged 15 or older have traveled domestically in 2016.

Both figures are significant improvements over recent years. The May 2017 foreign visitor count is up 19.6% over May of 2016. The PSA domestic travel data, on the other hand, is a 20% increase over 2012’s figures.

An upbeat local economy and globalization are considered major factors for the travel industry’s steady surge. The emergence of new technologies and payment methods are also seen primary drivers in the travel scene.

Given the current pace of internet and credit card penetration growth in Southeast Asia including the Philippines, OTAs are expected to only keep on getting more popular. In a 2016 research released by Google and Temasek, “ the SEA internet economy is expected to grow to $200+ billion by 2025. [1] ” Online travel including hotels and flights will account for 15% of its growth.

Several factors have been identified as the main reasons why people prefer using OTAs over direct booking channels and traditional travel agencies. These are:

  • Convenience – People can book anywhere they have internet access and a device that can go online.
  • More Choices – OTAs partner with more airlines and hotels than typical travel agencies.
  • Best Prices – With vast options, email alerts and smartphone notifications, users can choose the flight and hotel that’s best for their budget.
  • Minimal Risks – With rating and review systems built in, OTAs can help you pick flights and hotels for the best experience.
  • Diverse Payment Options – You can pay via credit, debit, bank deposits and sometimes even through PayPal or PayMaya.
  • Better Customer Service – OTAs have comprehensive FAQs, guides and customer support systems that you can tap anytime you have concerns.

Consumers aren’t the only ones bullish on OTAs. All indications point to the confidence of investors in the dominant role that OTAs will play in the future of Philippine tourism. Last July, Traveloka announced that it has raised $500 million in funding from Expedia, East Ventures, the Hillhouse Capital Group, JD.com and Sequoia Capital. The investment is allowing the OTA to focus on delivering the best travel experience for Southeast Asia travel market, including the Philippines.

Jack Ma (2017), in a speech at De La Salle University, asserted: “Artificial intelligence, robots will kill a lot of jobs for manufacturing but the services industry will always be the key,”. Automation is an an undeniable trend in every category of business under the sun. With the fear of the new millennial market born and evolved towards such automated tendencies, is this really the end of the service age? Can the human touch of travel agents really be replaced by online booking robots?

We look to the world and that seems to be the way, but how about potentials in our very own border? Let this affirmation assure you: “Filipino people have the best heart (for) service. It takes centuries to build up the heart to serve the people. The Philippines has great talent, great capabilities. No other country in the world has that,” (Ma, 2017). The billionaire is proposing that if there is a force that can fight: it is Filipino kind of service.

Since its conception in 2002, TravelOnline’s core values has been Filipino service oriented. When technology swerve away from that 2009 onwards, we did not conform to what the society dictated but pursued technology improvements in our own kind of way - service oriented way. Instead of investing heavily on robots that will do the work for clients, we empowered the travel agents and equipped them with technology to compete with this “booking robots”.

worst experience booking a flight

worst experience booking a flight. I encoded the correct passenger name and have it screened shot when I had to purchase for additional luggage allowance. We received e tickets with WRONG passenger name. I asked for their help in a most decent and proper way but they were not helpful and proactive. Worst, they are covering the mishaps and made it looked like I am making stories and fake proof. It was so stressful that I was pressed to post it because their hotline can't be reached and our email convo are just getting worse.

Not as good as they try to make you believe.

Well, it's about tickets payment. Wanted to buy a ticket and have it paid óver the counter' through 7-eleven or the like. Friends should arrange the payment, so I did transfer some 800 euro into their bank account. And upon that I ordered a ticket, anyway I tried, On ordering the ticket I ended up on the Payment page. But on the latter I was informed that the amount due exceeded the maximum amount set for payment over the counter. We're talking about a lousy 35000 Philippine Pesos only Well, I stopped using credit cards long time past already. I failed to find anything in their information section concerning a maximum allowed amount that could be paid over the counter. So I'm not happy with Traveloka to say the least. Wonder if they are as reliable as they try to convince their customers. Seems I'm not the only one.

I bought a plane ticket (with return flight). My flight from the Philippines to Singapore and Indonesia was exciting. Everything went smoothly. However, things grew worse on my journey back to the Philippines. Baggage costs a lot and is not free. If I don't have money, I'll be stranded in the Jakarta airport. Having said that, I will not suggest this app to everyone. If you have money or are wealthy, you will love this app. If you don't have enough money to pay for other costs, avoid this app.

Americans in paris: nationality changes shaping olympic gymnastics.

The U.S. Olympic Gymnastics teams will comprise of five gymnasts, but more than 17 American gymnasts will head to Paris. Instead of competing for spots on the U.S. Olympic team, American-born gymnasts will compete against their compatriots, electing instead to represent Bulgaria, Colombia, Haiti, The Philippines, and Syria. These seven athletes are not the first, nor will be the last, to switch their nationalities for competitive purposes.

A source of contention and debate within the gymnastics community, the act of competing for a different nation rose to the forefront in at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Controversy swirled as U.S. born gymnast Kylie Dickson competed for Belarus, a nation to which she had no ties or ancestry. Initiated by her coach’s Belarusian ties and amplified by Nellie Kim, President of the FIG Women’s Technical Committee, Belarus argued that Dickson’s nationality change was a calculated piece in their “ revival plan .”

However, the plan’s execution was poor. Dickson’s selection upset and perplexed fans – she had never made a U.S. national team and had dismal chances at medaling on the international stage. Concurrently, after the Alabama-born gymnast placed an abysmal 58th in qualifications, Belarusian media declared the experiment a “failure.”

Reflecting on the situation, U.S. Olympian John Roethlisberger questioned the ethics in an Inside Gymnastics column, sharing that he “believe[s] citizenship and country means so much more than an individual opportunity at a sporting event.”

While Dickson’s case received the most press due to her lack of ethnic ties and poor Olympic performance, nationality switches for those with direct ancestry have been happening for decades. More often than not, these changes comprise of a gymnast leaving a high-performing, developed gymnastics program for a country with minimal gymnastics infrastructure.

In recent years, U.S.-born Toni-Ann Williams and British-born Danusia Francis both represented their parents’ native Jamaica in international competition. Looking towards Paris, all six American-born athletes will represent nations with which they share ethnic ties.

The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) has been actively recruiting from the Philippine diaspora. Most notably, recently-crowned NCAA Champion Aleah Finnegan will represent her mother’s native nation.

Unlike Dickson, Finnegan’s gymnastics was world class when she competed for the United States. Finnegan earned a gold medal at the 2019 Pan American Games and was a three-time U.S. National Team member. Wasting no time, the Missouri-native has already produced impressive results. Since earning her citizenship in 2021, she has claimed Southeast Asian Games titles and two bronze medals at the Asian Championships.

Finnegan will be joined by 2021 U.S. Olympic Alternate Emma Malabuyo and three-time U.S. National Team member Levi Jung-Ruivivar, both who hold ethnic ties to the Philippines. The former just etched her name in the country’s recordbooks. In May, Malabuyo became the first female Philippine gymnast to win an Asian Championship, claiming gold on the floor exercise. Jung-Ruivivar also claimed a bronze on uneven bars at the same event.

Together, the three will make history. The Philippines has not sent female gymnasts to the Olympic Games since 1964. Due to a concerted effort by the country’s gymnastics federation and strong performances from Finnegan, Malabuyo, and Jung-Ruivivar, they will send three in 2024. The gymnasts will team up with Philippine men’s star, two-time World Champion Carlos Yulo, to headline the country’s strongest delegation in history.

Also on the women’s side, former NCAA standouts will represent new nations in Paris. 2021 NCAA Beam Champion, Luisa Blanco, punched her ticket to Paris after a stellar performance at the 2023 Pan American Games. The Alabama Crimson Tide star will compete for her parents’ native Colombia.

Joining Blanco is fellow NCAA Champion Lynnzee Brown. After competing within the U.S. for years, Brown elected to represent her father’s nation of Haiti in 2023. While Brown did not mathematically qualify for Paris, she was awarded an Olympic berth through the Tripartite Commission, a committee awarding Olympic bids to athletes from “ underrepresented ” nations.

The male counterpart receiving the Tripartite “Universality Spot” was also an American athlete. Lais Naijjar, Chicago native and child of Syrian immigrants, will represent Syria in Paris after four successful years on the country’s national team. American-born child of Bulgarian gymnasts, Kevin Penev, will also represent his parents’ nation in Paris.

While the above athletes all hold valid ties to their respective nations, their roads to Paris have not been free from controversy. Brown and Naijjar’s selection by the Tripartite commission, in particular, garnered intense scrutiny from the gymnastics community. Given that both athletes train with American resources, fans argued that gymnasts native to their underrepresented nations should have received the nominative spots.

Nonetheless, for these gymnasts, the opportunity to compete in the Olympics is irresistible. And, for their new federations, growth for the sport is paramount. In her first visit to her grandfather’s home country, Jung-Ruivivar told the Philippines’ Daily Tribune “I just want to give as much to [young Philippine gymnasts] because they are the future of Philippine gymnastics.” Controversial or not, these American-born athletes will likely bring newfound visibility to gymnastics in their respective nations.
