The three best bank accounts with travel insurance bolted on: We pick our favourites and whether they're worth paying for

Many Britons will feel a bank account isn't something they're prepared to pay for - after all, most current accounts are 'free'.

However, some packaged bank accounts offer a host of benefits that added together could justify their monthly cost.

The typical perks include free annual worldwide travel insurance, car breakdown cover and mobile phone insurance, often with family members included.

There is also the convenience factor of having three insurance policies taken care of saving both time and effort in having to organise it separately.

Some bank accounts charge a monthly fee, but throw in perks such as annual worldwide travel insurance.

Some bank accounts charge a monthly fee, but throw in perks such as annual worldwide travel insurance.

Michelle Stevens, banking expert at comparison site Finder, says: 'If you and your family are frequent travellers, then a current account with packaged travel insurance could be well worth the monthly fee, especially given the rising cost of travel insurance premiums in the last two years.

'But before signing up to any premium current account, it’s important you check that the terms of the travel insurance policy - as well as the other account features and perks - suit your needs.'

She adds: 'Another benefit of getting free travel insurance with a current account is that a lot of people usually forgo it - up to 8.6million in 2019 - which is not an advisable move.

'If you get seriously injured abroad then the bill can reach hundreds of thousands of pounds, so having travel insurance included with a current account may result in a lot of people getting covered who may not have done so otherwise.'

We pick our three favourite current account deals for travel insurance, taking into account the monthly cost and the additional perks on offer.

1.  Nationwide Flex Plus

This account offers worldwide travel insurance as well as mobile phone and European breakdown cover.

It does come with a £13 monthly charge, which, compared to other packaged bank accounts looks relatively cheap.

Its worldwide family travel insurance, includes winter sports, golf, weddings and business cover.

Nationwide offers worldwide travel, mobile phone and European breakdown cover and charges £13 a month for maintaining the account.

Cover for travel essentials includes luggage, documents and cash as well as protecting against travel-specific problems like delays, cancellations and medical expenses.

Then cancellation cover is up to £5,000, the medical expenses cover up to £10 million, whilst cover for travel disruption will be eligible when caused by natural disasters, or airline or travel end supplier failure.

The policy doesn't cover medical conditions unless they have been declared to Nationwide and accepted. In some instances, you can pay for a medical upgrade to your insurance policy.

Two other clauses to be aware of is that the longest trip length allowed is 31 consecutive days.

For any person to be insured who is aged 70 or over, they must buy an age upgrade to cover them.

Although the monthly cost will add up to £156 a year, it's possible to offset much of this during the the first year, thanks to Nationwide's current account switching incentive.

Non-Nationwide members can currently get £100 for switching, whilst members who switch to the Flex Plus account could get £125.

Saves the extra admin: Nationwide's annual travel insurance policy is worldwide, and covers a whole family for multiple trips, not just the individual account holder.

On top of travel insurance, account holders get vehicle breakdown cover both in the UK and the rest of Europe and mobile phone insurance for the whole family.

The car insurance is valid whether someone is a driver or a passenger in a vehicle, and comes with no excess to pay and unlimited callouts.

The mobile insurance covers mobiles belonging to the account holder and those belonging to their partner and dependent children. It covers for loss, theft, damage and faults.

2.  Virgin Money's Club M Account

Virgin's Club M Account comes with a £14.50 monthly charge.

Similar to Nationwide, it offers 31 days' worldwide cover per trip. It will cover the account holder and a partner living with them if there're both under 75, so it's a little more generous on that front.

Virgin's worldwide family multi-trip travel insurance - includes winter sports, golf and weddings. Plus, 24 hour access to a doctor at home or abroad.

It also covers lost, damaged or stolen items, and if the baggage is delayed, any essentials will be paid for in the interim period. It also includes cover for delays or missed departures and winter sports as standard.

Account holders are also covered when cancelling or cutting short a trip if they fall ill with coronavirus as long as they didn't know they had it and weren't being tested for it when they booked their trip.

The cover includes emergency medical, surgical, hospital, treatment and ambulance costs, as well as any additional accommodation and travel expenses if someone cannot return to the United Kingdom.

There is a maximum allowance of 31 days of worldwide cover per trip.

New customers switching to the Virgin Money Club M Account can also receive a bonus of 20,000 Virgin Points to spend with Virgin Red, thanks to Virgin Money's latest current account switching offer.

Virgin Red is a rewards club that turns everyday spending into points. Once you are a member, you can earn and spend Virgin Points across almost 200 different rewards.

The 20,000 Virgin Points boost means travellers could get a return flight to Barbados, the Bahamas or St Lucia, while bakery enthusiasts could turn their points into 100 sausage or vegan sausage rolls, 61 coffees or teas or 100 doughnuts or muffins.

3.  Halifax Ultimate Reward Current Account

Halifax Ultimate Reward current account costs £17 per month, the equivalent of £204 per year. However, there are ways to dramatically reduce this via its cashback and switching offers.

The account includes a family travel insurance policy for the account holder, their spouse or partner and children aged 18 or under, or up to 24 if they're in full time education.

It includes cover for personal belongings, certain sports and activities such as winter sports golf trips.

At £17 a month Halifax is the most expensive of our three top picks. However, its £150 cash incentive and £5 monthly cashback could help account holders to significantly reduce the cost.

Halifax's travel insurance covers personal Baggage up to £2,500 if it is lost, damaged or stolen.

It's also worth noting that a £75 excess per adult per incident may apply and to be covered trips must start and end in the UK.

All cover ends when the account holder turns 71. As long as the account holder is less than 71, their spouse or partner will also be covered until they reach 71.

What else:

It also offers car breakdown cover with the AA. This covers any vehicle the account holder is travelling in, at the roadside or at home. But only in the UK.

On top of the £150 bribe there are other perks to take advantage of. There is a choice of £5 a month paid into the account, two film rentals or three magazine rentals, or a free cinema ticket each month.

In order to benefit from this account holders must choose to either Spend £500 on their debit card each month or Keep at least £5,000 in the account at all times.

Should you get a bank account with travel insurance?

Pros and cons of a bank account with travel insurance, bottom line, frequently asked questions.

Current accounts with

Current accounts

We compare the following banking apps

Certain bank accounts require a monthly fee. But in return, you’ll get access to a range of benefits. One perk on offer from so-called ‘ packaged accounts ‘ can include travel insurance.

Having travel insurance automatically included with your bank account can be convenient, as you won’t need to take out a travel insurance policy each time you head abroad. But is it the right option for you? We take a look.

Whether you should get a bank account with travel insurance included ultimately depends on your situation. For a start, you’ll need to be comfortable paying a monthly fee for your bank account. Usually, this will be around £10 to £30 a month, depending on the account.

You should compare the cost of this fee against the cost of buying a separate travel insurance policy to see what works out the most cost-effective. To do this, multiply the monthly account fee by 12 and compare it to a standard annual policy. However, keep in mind that many packaged bank accounts also include other benefits such as mobile phone insurance and breakdown cover as part of the deal, so you’ll need to work out how much these would cost separately to get a fair comparison.

Another key consideration is exactly what the travel insurance policy included in your bank account covers. For example, does it offer worldwide travel insurance, or is it only valid for European countries? Does cover apply to you and your family or only you? If it covers you as a family, do you have to travel together to be insured?

You’ll also need to check the following:

  • How much cover do you get for lost luggage, medical costs, repatriation, holiday cancellation and so on?
  • Will you be covered for winter sports or other hazardous activities? Or do you need to pay extra?
  • Are there any age restrictions? Certain policies won’t cover you if you’re aged 70 or over, for example.
  • Are pre-existing conditions included?
  • How long does cover last? Some policies might only offer cover for trips of up to 31 consecutive days, for instance.

Note that many travel insurance policies (whether they’re offered through a bank account or not) won’t cover pre-existing conditions and limit the number of days per trip before cover expires. But it’s important to compare exactly what you’d get with a packaged account and what buying travel insurance separately would cover you for before you can work out whether a packaged account is worth it.

  • Can work out to be cost-effective, especially if it covers the whole family
  • More convenient than applying for policies separately
  • Other perks might be included in the account, such as mobile phone insurance
  • It won’t necessarily be cheaper than applying for travel insurance separately
  • Exclusions will apply
  • If you don’t declare all pre-existing medical conditions, you could invalidate your policy

Applying for a bank account with travel insurance included offers the convenience of never needing to remember to take out a travel insurance policy before you go on holiday. If you have a family, this can be particularly beneficial if the policy covers all of you. Plus, if your policy includes cancellation cover, you’ll be automatically covered from the moment you book your next trip.

However, it’s crucial to check whether family members must travel together or whether cover also applies if you travel separately. You should also check exactly what is and isn’t included in the cover and whether the cost of the account is worth it.

How does single trip travel insurance work?

Purchasing single trip travel insurance

Single trip travel insurance frequently asked questions, what is single trip travel insurance.

Affiliate links for the products on this page are from partners that compensate us (see our advertiser disclosure with our list of partners for more details). However, our opinions are our own. See how we rate insurance products to write unbiased product reviews.

  • Single trip travel insurance covers unexpected costs incurred during a trip.
  • Compared to annual travel insurance, single trip insurance is more flexible and comprehensive.
  • Premiums are based on trip costs, usually between 4% to 8%, but CFAR coverage may increase costs.

No matter the asset, protecting your investments via insurance is a proven means of providing coverage against financial loss. On par with homeowners, automobile, and life insurance, travel insurance is a proactive means of preparing for the uncertainties of travel, from flight delays and cancellations to lost luggage and medical emergencies.

The best travel insurance plan meets your specific needs. Single trip insurance protects one specific trip, offering the flexibility to tailor your insurance to your travel plans. If you're taking one large trip, perhaps your dream vacation, single trip insurance can protect your investment and provide peace of mind before, during, and after takeoff.

Single trip travel insurance covers unexpected additional expenses while on a trip. Often used interchangeably with traditional travel insurance, single trip travel insurance is the most popular type of insurance policy purchased by travelers in the US. Among its many benefits, this basic travel coverage is flexible, cost-effective, and comprehensive.

Compared with annual travel insurance coverage (which covers multiple excursions to and from home within a specified period and comes with a cap), traditional policies cover a range of unforeseen events and emergencies leading up to (and for the duration of) your trip. Single trip travel insurance cost is typically a percentage of your trip costs, anywhere from 4% to 8% of your trip's total cost

Coverage options in single trip policies

Travel insurance covers unexpected financial losses while traveling. This can include inconveniences that happen throughout a trip, like lost baggage, missed connections, and travel delays. For example, travel insurance can cover meals purchased at the airport after your flight has been delayed for a certain amount of time.

However, travel insurance is especially helpful when more serious incidents occur. For example, travel insurance will cover non-refundable deposits in the case of an unexpected trip cancellation, as long as your trip was canceled for a covered reason.

Additionally, medical emergency insurance is particularly helpful when traveling abroad, where US-based health insurance usually can't help you. Depending on your policy, travel insurance can cover hospital room and board, prescription medicine, and even surgeries. It may also pay for medical evacuations and repatriations.

Additional coverage options

Most insurance providers will provide additional coverage options if you're looking for something more specific. For example, if you're traveling to a destination for extreme sports like skydiving, you can add adventure sports coverage to your policy.

You can also add Cancel For Any Reason to your policy, if you think you may cancel your trip for an uncovered reason, like fear of flying. However, you will need to be mindful of when you purchase travel insurance, CFAR is only available if you purchase travel insurance within two to three weeks of placing a deposit on your trip. You can find our guide to the best cancel for any reason travel insurance here.

Traditional travel plans are typically designed for the leisure traveler. In other words, vacationers who want to protect against unexpected, sometimes catastrophic financial losses related to an upcoming vacation pay a small fee relative to trip costs.

"The typical travel insurance buyer is someone who can't afford to lose non-refundable trip deposits such as for a cruise or vacation rental if forced to cancel [a vacation] for a covered reason," says Carol Mueller , vice president of Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection . "It is also for the vacationer concerned about medical emergencies or medical evacuations [while away from home] that could cost thousands of dollars and [are] not covered by a health insurance plan."

However, if you have multiple trips coming up within a 365-day, annual travel insurance may be worth a look. While a single trip policy will end when you return home, annual travel insurance will cover any trips you take over a year.

Choosing the right single trip policy

Since it can be overwhelming to sift through the myriad options available, Jones offers some tips to help travelers make the right decision when choosing travel insurance coverage:

Think about your needs: Consider the kind of trip you are taking and the activities you're planning. If you're traveling for a sports trip, you may want extra protection for your sports equipment. But it's often simpler. For example, you'll need travel medical insurance for emergencies as your standard health insurance probably won't cover you abroad.

Compare policies: Compare policies from multiple providers to find one meeting your needs and budget. Look for policies with comprehensive coverage for unforeseen events such as medical emergencies and trip cancellations. You can see which is more affordable when you have similar plans side-by-side. Just don't forget to account for any differences to get the most competitive pricing.

Read the fine print: Make sure you understand any exclusions or limitations before purchasing a policy. Some coverages, like cancel for any reason travel insurance, may have a time limit, but the coverage should be straightforward. Other cancellation coverage will most likely have important exclusions you should know.

Consider preexisting conditions: If any travelers in your party have preexisting medical conditions, ensure the policy you plan to purchase covers them. You may have to pay extra, but it will cost you a lot less than trying to find essential medications while you're on the road, especially if you're traveling internationally.

Look for customer reviews: Check customer reviews to see how other travelers have fared with the policy and provider. You can use sites like Trustpilot, ConsumerAffairs, and the BBB.

Purchase early: It's important to secure coverage at the same time you book your trip, as some coverage may only be available within a specific timeframe. Like your plane tickets and other travel arrangements, you may qualify for lower rates or discounts if you buy early.

Finally, planning to swipe a family vacation off your bucket list? Investing in travel insurance is the smart and savvy way to ensure you eventually reach your destination (financially) unscathed, despite any minor derailments.

"You can't predict what can go wrong before you leave for, or even [what transpires] during your vacation. That's why it makes sense to consider purchasing a comprehensive, traditional plans protect you against financial losses you never thought would happen," says Mueller.

While you can insure any trip, single trip travel insurance is best for long, expensive, or international trips. It's best to buy insurance shortly after booking your trip, ideally within two weeks of placing the deposit on your trip.

Hundreds of plans offer similar coverages and benefit limits. Working with a certified insurance professional is the easiest way to cut through the hundreds of similar plans, find a quite, and purchase the plan best suited to your trip based on travel mode, trip cost, family presence, and more.

After all, even the best-laid plans (and most detail-oriented itineraries) are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances. While myriad travel-related details lie within your control, like when you go and where you stay, a few unpredictable variables will always remain. Proper insurance coverage might be the solution to anticipating all of them and ensuring a smooth journey one step at a time.

While single trip insurance is often more valuable for trips that are longer and international, insurance for domestic trips can be beneficial if they involve non-refundable expenses.

Yes, single trip policies can include multiple destinations within one trip, as long as all destinations are included in the policy.

You should purchase single trip insurance soon after booking your trip to qualify for benefits like CFAR policies and pre-existing condition waivers . Additionally, if your trip gets canceled before you can purchase travel insurance, you may not get your money back.

Most single trip insurance policies cover cancellations due to illness without the need for CFAR insurance, but it's important to check the specific terms of your policy.

While policy extensions are possible, rules depend on your insurer. Additionally, there may be a limit on how long you can extend your policy.

We offer travel insurance with our packaged bank accounts

These are only available to existing Royal Bank current account customers.

Which bank accounts come with travel insurance?

Our Silver bank accounts come with European travel insurance.

Our Platinum and Black bank accounts come with Worldwide travel insurance.

Do I legally need travel insurance?

No, you are not legally required to have travel insurance however it is a good idea.

Some tour operators may insist that you have travel insurance before they confirm your booking, especially to countries like the USA where there’s no public health service.

Why is travel insurance important?

If you have travel insurance, depending on your policy, it could cover the costs of unforeseen incidents such as health emergencies, cancelled flights or missing luggage.

Not sure a packaged account is for you?

View our full  range of accounts , including accounts with no monthly fee.

Who is covered by my travel insurance?

For both Platinum and Black account customers, family cover is included. This provides cover for you, your partner, and dependent children under 18 (or under 23 if in full time education) at the start of the journey. Children must be living at the home address (or with the other parent) and be neither married nor in a civil partnership.

For Silver account customers, only you and any joint account holder is covered.

We have a range of cover across our packaged bank accounts. Please see the policy terms for full details and exclusions.

Common questions about our travel insurance

How can i get a copy of my travel insurance policy.

You can get a copy of your travel insurance terms here:

Platinum Travel Insurance Terms (PDF 717KB)

Black Account Travel Insurance Terms (PDF 895KB)

Do I need to register for travel insurance?

You don't need to register, you're automatically covered.

If you would like to extend your cover to include pre-existing medical conditions or are aged 70 and over, please call us. We may ask you to pay an additional premium or we may not cover your condition.

Do I need to let you know my travel plans?

You don't need to let us know when you are going abroad. Your travel insurance automatically applies if you have a Silver, Platinum, or Black bank account.

Our fraud monitoring services will secure and monitor your debit card activity the same way as it does within the UK so you can travel freely without having to notify us.

However, we understand you might still like to register your travel plans and for that reason we have kept the option for you to do so on the mobile app.

Steps to register your travel plans for your debit card:

  • All you need to do is tap on your account from the main page and go to 'Manage my card'.
  • Tap 'Going abroad' then 'Add trip' (iOS devices) or 'Register card' (Android devices) and follow the instructions on screen.

What is my travel insurance policy number?

Your policy number is your sort code followed by your account number.

This is also shown on the Certificate of Insurance that you can download or request by calling us.

Any upgrades you purchase will have their own unique policy ID which is shown in the confirmation email.

What cover does our travel insurance provide for COVID-19?

Your policy provides cover for the following situations related to COVID-19 as long as the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) aren't advising against "all travel" or "all but essential travel" to your destination.

Cutting short a trip due to:

  •  A change in FCDO advice, as long as you weren’t aware of this advice when you travelled.
  • Being unable to stay in pre-booked accommodation due to COVID-19 or another pandemic, as long as you weren’t aware of this when you travelled.

Cancelling a trip due to:

  • You or any insured person, close relative or travelling companion being diagnosed with COVID-19 or another pandemic disease.
  • Quarantine (as an individual and not broadly as part or all of a population, vessel or geographical area).
  • The FCDO advising against 'all' or 'all but essential' travel due to COVID-19 or another pandemic, if not known at the time of booking
  • You being refused boarding onto your booked public transport due to displaying symptoms of COVID-19 or another epidemic or pandemic.

Current account FAQs

What is a packaged bank account expandable section.

Packaged bank accounts typically involve paying a monthly fee in return for additional account perks and benefits. For example, these benefits could include breakdown cover, mobile phone insurance and travel insurance, all of which would be covered by the monthly account fee. These are on top of all the features you might normally expect from a current account. If you have a need for more than one of the benefits, it’s a great way to have your insurances grouped together and can often be seen as more cost effective.

Switch to Lloyds Bank expandable section

Switch your current account to us in just 7 working days, using our stress-free process.

Whether you want to move to Lloyds Bank or you already bank with us, switching is easy. Our team will do everything to make sure your switch runs smoothly, including transferring all your Direct Debits and standing orders to your new account.

  • Working day 3-5 It will take a couple of days to switch over your payment arrangements, and make sure your Lloyds Bank account is ready to go for the switch date.

  • Working day 7 Congratulations, your switch is complete. Your balance is transferred and your old account is closed.
  • After you switch We'll arrange for payments accidentally made to your old account to be automatically redirected to your new account. We'll also contact the sender and give them your new account details.

Arranged overdraft expandable section

An arranged overdraft can act as a short term safety net. You can use it to borrow money up to an agreed limit through your bank account.

  • You can apply to add an arranged overdraft to your account and you’ll only pay daily arranged overdraft interest if you use it.
  • If you use your arranged overdraft but pay it back before the end of the day, then you won’t pay any arranged overdraft interest for that day.

Helpful tools  - You can use our  eligibility checker  and  cost calculator  to check your eligibility and calculate the cost of an arranged overdraft.

Applying for an arranged overdraft  - When you have applied for this account, at the end of the application you can apply for an arranged overdraft which you can add right away. You can also apply for one later.

Amending an arranged overdraft  - You can reduce or remove your arranged overdraft at any time through Mobile Banking, Internet Banking or Telephone Banking or by visiting your branch. But you must repay anything you owe if you want to remove an arranged overdraft or anything over the new reduced limit you want. You can also apply to increase it. Using an arranged overdraft increases your overall borrowing and may affect your credit score.

If you don't have enough money in your account or available arranged overdraft to make a payment, we may either let you borrow through an unarranged overdraft or refuse to make the payment. Missing payments and using an unarranged overdraft can damage your credit score, please get in touch with us as we may be able to help you.

Applying for this product does not improve your eligibility for an arranged overdraft.

All overdrafts are subject to application and repayable on demand. You must be 18 or over to apply.

Arranged overdraft details

  • £50 interest free amount
  • 39.9% EAR (variable) representative
  • Your interest rate will be based on how you manage any accounts you have with us and on the credit information we hold about you
  • No unarranged overdraft interest, fees or charges

Representative Example

A variable representative rate of 57.92% APR

A variable interest rate of  39.9% EAR EAR is the Equivalent Annual Rate. This is the annual interest rate of an overdraft. This means you are charged over the year based on how often and how much you are overdrawn by, and the effect of compounding it – charging interest on interest already charged. This interest rate does not include any other fees and charges.

Based on borrowing  £1,200

The APR includes monthly fees of £11.50, Club Lloyds monthly account fees of £3* and an interest free amount of £50

* The Club Lloyds fee of £3 is waived for each month you pay in at least £2,000 into your account.

How much does my overdraft cost in pounds and pence?

As an example, the interest cost of borrowing £500 is:

£3.22  for 7 days

£13.86  for 30 days

£28.09  for 60 days

How does our overdraft compare?

You can use the representative APR to compare with other products or credit providers, this can help you make sure that you choose the right type of borrowing for you.

Useful tools

You can use our calculator to work out how much your anticipated arranged overdraft borrowing would cost over different periods of time.
