Conference All-Star teams are for those kids who will be graduating from AYF and entering their high school programs (8th Graders), have maintained a high standard of academic performance, and would like to have the opportunity to experience participating in an out-of-state Championship Tournament.

The Conference All Star division gives those players in their last year of AYF (those 8th graders on teams did not qualify for a place at National Championship) a chance to compete on a national stage and create AYF memories to last a lifetime. This division also gives city-and-state assembled teams a chance to represent their conference in the national football community.

Each AYF National Conference has the opportunity to create a Conference All-Star team made up of players selected in the post season. Members should inquire with their Conference Commissioner for more details. The selection process is determined by the conference exclusively. To submit a team from play in the National Championships Conference All-Star Division, contact the AYF National Office.

International Division

To raise the level of global cultural awareness among our young people, and to make American football and cheerleading a truly universal sport, AYF has made a commitment to the help develop football and cheer internationally. The heart of this commitment is to increase the knowledge of and respect for other cultures by our young athletes. We also hope to make American football and cheerleading a truly global sport. By inviting and encouraging nations across the globe to join AYF, we will become an organization that integrates religions, cultures, ethnicities and languages via the universal appeal of football. Join our roster of international progams.

Inspiration Program

The Inspiraton Program was developed to foster a confidence and sense of self-worth that extends beyond the gridiron and into the school, family and community. Children with cognitive and physical disabilities are given the opportunity to transform their disabilities into abilities. Players are able to exercise regularly to become stronger and healthier, while building a network of friends, support, and trust. No scores will be kept, however it is still a fun, social and competitive environment.

There are no age, weight, or height restrictions. This is skill-based play. Find Inspiration divisions and rules at MYAYF.com.

NC Youth Travel Team Rankings

We're going to do our best to try and develop an up-to-date ranking for each age group, 8u-13u. Please remember these rankings are NOT definitive. The purpose of these rankings are to 1) provide recognition to high-performing teams, 2) to offer some insight into the level of competition you might be facing in an upcoming game or tournament, or 3) to allow parents and coaches some ability to gauge who some of the best teams are around the state in different regions or age groups. These are meant to be purely fun and informative. If you disagree or think we're missing something in our rankings, let us know! We have also archived our previous rankings for each of the age groups. You can find links to older rankings on the respective age group's current ranking page.

From Our Mountains to Our Beaches – Travel NC!

Sports in North Carolina is ingrained in North Carolina culture with the state producing teams that pride themselves in competing at every level. The different sporting organizations that NC teams participate in include the National Basket Association (NBA), the National Hockey League (NHL), the National Football League (NFL), minor league baseball and others along with various well-known champion college sports teams.

NC Professional Football

Carolina Panthers Bank of America Stadium

In professional football, North Carolina boasts of being home to the Carolina Panthers of the NFL. They hold their home games in the Bank of America Stadium with a capacity of 74 500 people situated in Uptown Charlotte. They also participated in the Super Bowl XXXVIII on February 1, 2004.

NC Professional Hockey

In hockey, the Raleigh-based Carolina Hurricanes represent the State in the National Hockey League. In 2006 they won the Stanley Cup which showed their bravery and hard work. PNC Arena is their home. They are also the first major professional sports team to win for North Carolina their sport’s highest championship. The Hurricanes moved to the state in 1997 from Hartford, Connecticut.

NC Professional Basketball

In professional basketball, North Carolina has the Charlotte Bobcats that participate in the NBA. They are based in Charlotte and were added in 2004 the same time the city lost to New Orleans the Hornets. Home games to the Bobcats are played in Time Warner Cable Arena. The majority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats is Michael Jordan who played basketball for UNC while in college under head coach Dean Smith and Jordan later played professional basketball with the Chicago Bulls.

NC Minor League Baseball

Durham Bulls

The Durham Bulls are a Triple-A minor league baseball team that is affiliated with the Tampa Bay Rays major league baseball team. North Carolina State has been made famous by Pinehurst Resort a world-class golf resort that hosts many major golf championships. It has hosted the PGA Championship, the US Open Championship, and the Ryder Cup Matches. It is expected to make history in 2014 when it becomes the first course to host both women’s and men’s US Open in the same year. Every year many professional tours come to the State. Among those are the EGolf Professional Tour based in Charlotte; the PGA Tour Quail Hollow Championship in Charlotte; and the Greater Greensboro Open in Greensboro. The Nationwide Tour takes place in Raleigh each year for the Carolina Classic.

NC College Sports

In college sports, 18 schools from North Carolina compete at Division level. Greensboro is the headquarters of the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference). Among college sports, basketball remains the most popular because of the Tobacco Road rivalries (an informal nickname given to a short stretch that passes through tobacco-producing areas of North Carolina). There are several different rivalries within the state. NC State and UNC are bitter rivalries; UNC and ECU are rivalries; Duke University and UNC; and NC State and ECU.

The term tobacco road is often used when talking about NC college sports. The term refers to the rival NC ACC universities that are located so close to one another. The roads and highways that lead to and from the four universities are lined with tobacco fields common to North Carolina. The four universities so closely located to one another are the Duke Blue Devils from Duke University in Durham; NC State Wolfpack from NC State University; UNC Tarheels from the University of North Carolina; and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons from Wake Forest University in Winston Salem. The closeness has created a rivalry among students, alumni, and fans that is one of the most competitive rivalries in college sports.

North Carolina is home to some of the most well-known and successful college teams in the USA and the world. NC college basketball is some of the best with the success and multiple championships held by many ACC basketball teams from Duke, UNC, NC State, and Wake Forest. Duke leads with the most ACC Championships, followed by UNC with 17 ACC championships, NC State with 10 ACC Championships, and Wake Forest with 4 ACC Basketball Championships.

The ACC Men’s Basketball Teams have also won several NCAA Championships over the years. Duke was the NCAA Champions in 1991, 1992, 2001 and 2010. UNC was the NCAA Champions in 1982,1993,2005 and 2009.. NC State won the NCAA Championship in 1974 and 1983.

Famous NC college/university basketball players that went on the play in the NBA include Phil Ford (UNC), Michael Jordan (UNC); Dereck Whittenburg (NC State); JJ Redick (DUKE); Tyler Hansbrough (UNC); Christian Laettner (DUKE); and David Thompson (NC State).

Major colleges in North Carolina field teams in college football making it very popular. Past ACC football championships have been won by Duke 7 times, NC State 7 times, UNC 5 times, and Wake Forest twice. Many NC college football teams have had successful seasons resulting in numerous bowl games. The last NC-based college football team to win the ACC Championship was Wake Forest University. Wake Forest won the ACC football championships in 2006 allowing them to participate in the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida in January 2007.

North Carolina is a large part of the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing, better known as NASCAR. The state is home to 80% of the NASCAR racing teams. NASCAR has three different racing series: the Sprint Cup, the Nationwide, and the Camping World Truck Series. In the 1980 and 1990’s NASCAR teams raced at several North Carolina racetracks including the Charlotte Motor Speedway, Rockingham Speedway, and North Wilkesboro Speedway. Many of NASCAR’s most famous drivers are from NC including the late Dale Earnhardt (Kannapolis); the Petty family of drivers Lee Petty, Richard Petty (Level Cross), and Kyle Petty; Junior Johnson (Ronda); and Ned Jarrett (Newton). The NASCAR Hall of Fame is located in Charlotte, NC. The Hall of Fame is dedicated to drivers, crew chiefs, owners, and others within the sport who have shown great skill and achievement in their area of NASCAR sports.

Bill mandating UNC, NC State football play annually, schedule in-state foes advances

A bill that would require the North Carolina Tar Heels and NC State Wolfpack to play each other annually, as well as other in-state and public FBS programs routinely in football has passed committee, per Brian Murphy.

House Bill 965 is titled UNC Intrastate Athletic Competition, and it passed committee very quickly, reportedly, in less than two minutes. There was no discussion on the topic before it advanced.

The bill was filed by Republican House members, including Reps. Jason Saine, Jake Johnson, Ray Pickett, and David Willis. In it, UNC and NC State would be required to play at least one of ECU , Charlotte , and Appalachian State annually. It would also require them to play the three schools at home and away every six years.

On top of that, the bill would require UNC and NC State to play one another annually in football each year.

The rivalry between UNC and NC State is a longstanding one. It goes back to 1894 and the Tar Heels hold the lead with an all-time record of 68-39-6 in their meetings.

“Sports tourism is vital to the economy of North Carolina, and intrastate collegiate athletics generates millions of dollars in economic impact to the State,” the bill states. “It is the priority of the General Assembly to encourage intrastate collegiate athletic rivalries in order to promote economic development.”

The bill is, likely, a nod to conference realignment that has already seen several traditional in-state rivalries come to an end as teams move from one conference to another. It comes at a time when the ACC, which both UNC and NC State are members of, is dealing with legal battles with multiple schools as they look for ways to potentially leave the conference for what they see as a better situation in the future.

UNC has played Appalachian State four times in its history, including in 2023. The Tar Heels have also played ECU 17 times, including in 2018. They’ve never played Charlotte.

NC State has also never played Charlotte before. However, they have 32 games against ECU, including as recently as 2022 under their belt. On top of that, the Wolfpack has six all-time games against Appalachian State, ranging from 1932 to 2006.

Representative Jason Saine is known for his support of Charlotte. He is also a senior chairman of the appropriations committee.

“We’re just making sure we get those games,” Saine said. “They can’t not play. There’s enough wiggle room in there as far as space and calendaring that we’ll get the maximum benefit without real injury to them. It’s what fans want to see and it’s a good way to do it.”

On top of the football games, UNC and NC State would also have to play ECU, Charlotte, and Appalachian State in both men’s and women’s basketball as well. It requires home and away games between the schools as well, which would rotate on an annual basis.

Notably, the bill sets aside $1 million to the Board of Governors to “inform eligible constituent institutions and members of the public about the intrastate athletic competition required” by the act.

If passed into law, the bill would become effective on July 1.

Duke football’s quarterback of the future will be on campus over the weekend.

Dan Mahan, a three-star quarterback from Burlington, North Carolina, shared the news of his visit through X (the social media platform formerly known as Twitter) on Wednesday.

Mahan plays for Walter M. Williams High School, where he passed for 1,776 yards and 18 touchdowns in 10 games last season as a junior. He averaged 7.46 yards per attempt and only tossed eight interceptions, completing 58.8% of his passes while the Bulldogs finished with a 9-3 record.

Mahan will join a large class of visitors in Duke’s second full weekend of the summer. A pair of three-star wide receiver prospects, Nasir Newkirk from North Carolina and Gerritt Kemp from Georgia , already revealed they’d join Mahan in Durham this weekend.

Diaz hopes to keep up his good form from last week when he snagged commitments from Texas linebacker Elliott Schaper and Georgia running back Javin Gordon .

After two decades at Cherryville, this familiar face will take over as athletic director

travel football nc

A familiar face will soon take a new role within Cherryville High School athletics.

With retirement looming for longtime athletic director Scott Harrill, another program mainstay in Matt Powers will assume the role on July 1.

“I’m really excited; I’ve been looking forward to this for a while,” said Powers. “It’s really been a goal of mine. I’m excited to get going this summer and into the next school year. (Harrill) has been a great mentor and athletic director for us; he’s put us in a great place. That’s my job now, to keep it going.”

Harrill’s 11 years as Cherryville athletic director concluded with the end of the 2023-24 school term.

This coming school year will be Powers’ 20th at Cherryville High. He currently serves as a social studies teacher and the school’s wrestling coach, though he’s spent time in a bevy of other roles.

“Knowing him, (Powers) is awfully dedicated and passionate about Cherryville High School,” said principal Shawn Hubers. “That’s hard to find and is a huge advantage for us, I can’t say that enough. He’s been around, seen how things run and already shared good ideas, ways he’d like to see our athletic program grow and move us forward. I am very confident that he will do a great job.”

Powers said one of the things he’s most looking forward to is seeing how other Cherryville High coaches run their programs.

“I’ve coached wrestling throughout my time here, in addition to football, golf and other things,” Powers said. “I’m most eager to see how their programs run, what they are doing, what makes them successful as coaches and mentors. When you’re at football practice, it’s impossible to see how the tennis team or volleyball coaches deal with thing from day to day. In winter, it’s equally tough as a wrestling coach to check-in on our basketball teams. I’m really looking forward to that part of the job."

Powers will certainly start his tenure with a working knowledge of Cherryville’s athletic framework. This past spring, he served as the assistant athletic director in hope of becoming more acquainted with day-to-day obligations associated with the job.

“I got to see a lot more baseball and softball this spring,” he said. “It’s allowed me to get around, be present and assure them I’m there for them and there to help with whatever they need. I’m a fan first and want Cherryville Ironmen athletics to be successful; I’ll be the banner hold for that and want to see it flourish.”

Powers' promotion comes at a time of change for Cherryville High athletics, with the boys basketball (Antonio Griggs) and football (Patrick Bowman) programs taking on new leadership in the past 18 months.
