Travel Medicine Clinics Overview

A barefoot woman stands at an overlook above Barcelona, Spain.

A visit to a Mayo Clinic travel medicine clinic before you depart on an international trip can help ensure a safer, smoother experience.

If you're planning a trip overseas, make one of your first stops a consultation with specialists in the travel medicine clinics at Mayo's campuses in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota. Availability of services may vary among locations. Please confirm when you request an appointment.

You meet with a travel medicine specialist who is knowledgeable about current health risks worldwide and who will promote safe and healthy travels by offering counseling, recommendations, vaccinations, prescriptions and, if needed, a referral to another expert for complex medical conditions.

Virtual visits

You might be eligible for virtual pretravel consultations. If you're interested in this option, talk with the patient appointment specialist when you contact us to schedule an appointment.

COVID-19 and international travel

International travel has become more complex due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and some countries have exit and entry requirements. Your travel medicine specialist will be able to help you prepare for these requirements so that you have a smoother travel experience.

Before your trip

Schedule an appointment for a pretravel consultation with a Mayo Clinic travel medicine clinic well before you depart so the travel medicine specialist can help you prepare. Ideally, this appointment would occur as soon as travel plans are established and at least two weeks — and preferably 4-8 weeks — before departure. When requesting an appointment for pretravel consultation, be prepared to inform the patient appointment specialist of the following:

  • All countries being visited
  • Dates and duration of travel
  • Any unusual circumstances

At or preferably before the appointment, you will want to provide copies of all available immunization records (including the International Certificate of Vaccination, commonly referred to as the yellow card). Doing so will expedite your clinic visit and may decrease the number of vaccines you are advised to receive.

Your in-depth pre-travel consultation may include:

  • A country-by-country assessment of all health risks specific for your travel itinerary, such as exotic infectious agents, altitude sickness and heat exhaustion
  • A review of your medical and immunization history profile with advice for health promotion and illness prevention
  • Advice for the high-risk traveler
  • Immunization recommendations, counseling and administration of vaccines to prevent illnesses
  • Vector precautions counseling
  • Malaria prevention counseling, with prescriptions if needed
  • Traveler's diarrhea counseling for prevention and self-treatment, with antibiotic prescription if needed
  • Identification of health resources in the countries you'll be visiting
  • Counseling on travel-related risks such as altitude sickness, with preventive prescriptions if needed
  • An opportunity to ask questions about the unique health and safety concerns for your travel itinerary

You will leave your travel medicine clinic appointment with much helpful and up-to-date information.

After your trip

  • Depending on where you're going and for how long, the travel clinic may recommend a routine follow-up evaluation after your return.
  • If you return sick, the travel clinic staff members are Mayo Clinic infectious diseases experts who provide comprehensive post-travel consultations for evaluation and treatment of travel-related illness, including parasitic and other diseases common to tropical regions but uncommon in the United States.

My wife and I had an excellent experience here. In addition to being an expert, the consultant was friendly and helpful. He gave us all the immunization information we needed to make our extended stay in Thailand safe, and we were pleased with the level of customer service he provided. If you need to receive vaccinations for a trip abroad, I highly recommend TravelBug Health.

Excellent appointment and service.

Gave me confidence I was well prepared.

Responsive, informative, and helpful. Gave me confidence I was well prepared health-wise for my trip.

No pressure and we received only the vaccines we needed.

My partner and I visited this business today and we had an overall great experience! We are traveling to Thailand in two weeks & Norman was extremely helpful with information about common illnesses & their causes, as well as preventing insect bites. His suggestions were objective and when we were deciding which vaccines to receive, he did not push anything that we weren’t interested in. We had our consultation and received our needed vaccinations shortly after. We highly recommend this business and feel much more prepared now!

A Must Visit.

Very professional and very knowledgeable. A must visit before you make that faraway trip. Norman knows his stuff!

Comprehensive, practical and professional.

Easy, efficient and a great resource.

I am very pleased with the experience. I was looking for immunizations for a trip to South America and given the contact by my primary care doctor. He was very knowledgeable, professional, and a great source for health and safety tips. I called and set up an appointment quickly, was emailed great information about the countries I was visiting, and completed the process with ease and efficiency. Highly recommend!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why not see my primary care physician?

At Arcadia Physician’s Travel Clinic we specialize in preventative travel health.  International disease risk is always changing, and differs greatly from the disease risk here in the United States.  When disease outbreaks occur, the vaccine recommendations or requirements for that part of the world can change.  Antibiotic resistance is present in some parts of the world.  Some malaria medications do not protect in certain parts of the world. It is our job to stay current on these and other changing issues.  Most primary care providers are not aware of these changes and do not have the time to remain current on issues related to travel.  We know the intricacies of international travel that your primary care physician may not know.  We also have vaccines such as Yellow Fever and Typhoid that most primary care providers do not have.

There are no vaccine requirements for my destination.  Is a consultation really necessary?

No matter where you are traveling you will be exposed to exotic organisms.  Many countries around the world have infectious diseases that are very dangerous, and even deadly.  Most countries do not have vaccine requirements for travel.  This does not mean that there is no risk.

What exactly is a vaccine?

A vaccine is a harmless substance delivered to your body to stimulate an immune response.  Vaccines stimulate your body to produce antibodies and provide immunity against one or several diseases.  If you are exposed to a disease after you have received the vaccine, your immune system is ready to fight the infection with the right antibodies so that you don’t get sick.

Do I need an appointment to be seen?

Yes, we recommend that you call ahead and schedule an appointment.  Since some vaccinations require multiple doses before immunity is obtained, it is best to schedule an appointment at least 6 weeks prior to travel so that you have adequate time to build immunity.  We understand that sometimes pla ns happen quickly and it is not possible to come in 6 weeks in advance.  It is never too late to be seen.  Some vaccines offer immediate immunity, and others have accelerated schedules that can be given in a pinch. Appointments are often available the same day or the same week that you call.

Is yellow fever vaccine required for international travel?

Some countries require proof of yellow fever vaccination as a condition of entry.  Other countries have yellow fever risk, but do not require vaccination. Our staff will be able to address your specific trip and will make recommendations about yellow fever and other vaccinations.

Do I need a referral from my primary care doctor?

We can see you without a referral or prescription from your doctor.  Doctor Tyler Southwell, MD is our medical director and oversees all care provided.

When should I schedule my appointment?

It is ideal to schedule a pre-travel consultation 6 weeks or more before travel.  Some vaccines require multiple doses spaced over a specific time period before full immunity is gained.  Other vaccines provide immediate protection.  We understand that it is not always possible to be seen 6 weeks prior to travel. In these situations we will meet your travel health needs as completely as possible in the time we have.

Will I need prescriptions for my trip?

We will determine what, if any, prescriptions you may require in your pre-travel consultation.  It is possible you may need antibiotics to treat traveler’s diarrhea, medication to prevent malaria, medication to prevent altitude illness, or other prescriptions that Dr. Southwell determines are appropriate for you.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Bring your full itinerary as well as any prior immunization records so that we can determine exactly what vaccines or medications you will need. It is also important to have a full list of your current medications available. For more complete information on how best to prepare for your consultation, please read our full guidance here

Will you bill my insurance?

As is customary in travel medicine, we provide services on a fee-for-service basis, and payment is due at the time the service is provided.  We will provide you with the necessary billing information if you choose to submit a claim to your insurance for reimbursement.
