6. Outeniqua Pass

travel cafe george

The Outeniqua Pass, elegantly stretching through South Africa’s Western Cape, offers a picturesque route that connects George to Oudtshoorn and the Little Karoo. Established to provide a more accessible path than the historic Montagu Pass, its construction from 1942 to 1951 marked a significant development in the region’s transportation network. Today, this pass is a key conduit for travellers and goods between the coastal town of George and the inland expanses of the Little Karoo and Langkloof.

Travellers on the Outeniqua Pass are treated to a journey of natural wonder. The pass meanders with 40 diverse bends, corners, and curves, offering breathtaking views at every turn. Caution is advised, as the pass can present challenges with its tight turns and changing weather conditions. The higher sections of the pass are known for their heavy rainfall and dense mountain mists, which can drastically reduce visibility and require careful navigation, especially given the mix of commercial and tourist traffic.

Visitors driving southward can enjoy several stunning viewpoints along the pass. One particularly notable spot is marked as ‘The 4 passes’, providing a panoramic view that includes all four historic passes in the region, a visual treat connecting the present to a rich history. Spanning 13.3 kilometres with an altitude variance of 581 metres, the pass reveals the diverse and enchanting landscapes of the Western Cape. From its summits to its valleys, the Outeniqua Pass is not just a travel route but a journey through some of South Africa’s most captivating natural scenery.

Visit George

George is the largest city in the Garden Route, a scenic stretch of the Western Cape characterized by mountainous scenery and breathtaking coastline. Explore George, discovering its historical sights and sophisticated city center, before trekking into the rest of the region.

Visit some of George’s historical sites to learn about the city’s past. The Dutch East India company established a woodcutters’ outpost here in the late 18th century that became the town of George in 1811.

Walk down York Street and look for St. Mark’s Cathedral, built in 1850, and King Edward VII Library, an elegant example of Edwardian architecture. Outside the library is the Slave Tree, which was planted at the founding of George and is so called because of the chain and lock around the trunk.

Learn about the timber industry that the city was built on in George Museum. Alternatively, explore the Outeniqua Transport Museum to see historic train engines and vintage cars.

Take your family to Redberry Farm , a fun park and farm where visitors can pick strawberries and travel in a mini train. Ride out onto the pond in a bubble ball or paddle boat and get lost in a vast hedge maze.

Tee off in some of the best golf courses in the country. Fancourt and the George Golf Club are particularly acclaimed for their spectacular 18-hole challenges.

Enjoy George’s scenic location next to the Outeniqua Mountains and put on your hiking boots. Follow one of the walking trails outside the city. Cradock Peak and George Peak are demanding walks with rewarding views at the end.

Fly into George Airport from Johannesburg , Durban or Cape Town . Rent a car at the airport for flexibility when traveling in George and the surrounding area.

George is a pleasant and exciting destination throughout the year. The summer months in George are lively and hot, and the town is usually packed with visitors to the Garden Route. Come in the milder shoulder months for opportunities to spot wildlife in the nearby ocean.

My wife and I are checking out mountain city and decided to try this place. I'm glad we stopped. Their reaper burger is AMAZING !! Staff is friendly and it's right downtown. They have music softly playing in the background. Great place! Added: They use fresh ground beef I think. So good! Ask for extra napkins!!

This New York Lake Was Just Named the Cleanest in the U.S.

Lake George ranked among the cleanest in the U.S.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

Of the 479,950 lakes in the lower 48 states (and additional 3 million in Alaska), there are lakes large and small, clean and not-so-clean. In 2010, the Environmental Protection Agency reported that almost 20 percent of the 50,000 lakes they surveyed had been impacted by chemical fertilizer runoff. As a result, many lakes are taken over by harmful algae blooms and accumulate muck on the bottom. Foul smells and declining fish populations ensue.

Then there are those few, pristine bodies of water that remain clean and crystal clear . The cleanest among them, according to a new study by A-Z Animals , is Lake George in the Adirondacks. The New York lake is fed by mountain streams and sits close to its source, two factors that keep it from being polluted. In addition, a large portion of Lake George’s deep blue waters are surrounded by protected old-growth forest and backed by the Adirondack Mountains.

The lake, which is nicknamed the “Queen of American Lakes,” is considered to be the birthplace of the American vacation . Generation after generation of Americans have spent their summers at the lake , creating memories and reconnecting on the clean waters of Lake George.

The lake itself is long and thin with over 100 miles of shoreline, including the popular Million Dollar Beach near the town of Lake George , New York. Multiple resorts, campgrounds, and preserves line the lake, providing entry points to the watery paradise. Winter Realms not returning to Lake George this winter

L AKE GEORGE, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — Winter Realms, an event produced by Ice Castles, is not returning to Lake George for the upcoming winter. Warren County Public Affairs Director Don Lehman said Ice Castles cited warm weather as the reason for not returning.

Ice Castles as an event was at the Charles Wood Park Festival Space in Lake George for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 season. For the 2023-24 season, Ice Castles was replaced with Winter Realms , a winter event with ice skating, lights, igloos, and a sculpture park.

Both Ice Castles and Winter Realms had to close early over the past years due to warm temperatures which made the ice melt. Lehman said the management of the Festival Space is looking for another winter event to fill the space. Anyone who is interested can email [email protected] .

Brad Buehlhorn, who is the East Coast Operations Director for Ice Castles, said a lot of factor went into the decision of not returning to Lake George for the upcoming season. While mild weather was a factor, he said they received a lot of feedback from guests and want to make Winter Realms the best it can be.

“Our experience in Lake George has been wonderful,” said Buehlhorn. “We definitely want to go back.”

For this upcoming season, Buehlhorn said they are taking a break from New York entirely and are focusing on Ice Castles rather than Winter Realms. Ice Castles makes location decisions on a year-to-year basis, said Buehlhorn, and would definitely want to return to New York in the future.

However, Winter’s Dream, which is produced by Moment Factory, is set to return to Lake George’s Fort William Henry for the upcoming winter season. Winter’s Dream uses light and projection technology to transform the inside of Fort William Henry into themed winter experiences.

Sam Luciano, the general manager of the Fort William Henry, said Winter’s Dream is set to return on November 28 and run through March. He said those months are critical for Lake George.

“With Ice Castles going out, Winter’s Dream becomes the winter attraction for the area, other than skiing and the Winter Carnival,” said Luciano.

Metro fare changes go into effect this weekend

Ahead of a travel-heavy week, Metro fares will go up this Sunday.

After passing a $4.8 billion budget in April , the transit system said fare increases — up 12.5% — will help bring in more revenue.

In a news release , Metro said the fare increases “will help keep fares in line with cost of living adjustments and allows us to keep running our current levels of service.”

Regular Metrobus fares will go from $2 to $2.25. Metrorail fares on weekdays will go from $2 to $2.25-$6.75 depending on distance traveled. Metrorail fares after 9:30 p.m. and on weekends will raise from $2 to $2.25-$2.50.

Reminder to all Metro customers: fare increases go into effect systemwide on June 30. Slight changes in pricing across Metro help maintain the transportation you depend on—with no cuts in service! Learn more about fare changes: https://t.co/xfCRcekuzS #wmata pic.twitter.com/rXWmLA1MRN — Metro Forward (@wmata) June 24, 2024

Metro Access fares will also rise to $4.50. Reduced fare programs like MetroLift and senior discounts will continue to be 50% off regular fares.

In addition to the fare increases, Metro is also freezing hiring and wages to help fill its $750 million deficit by cutting administrative costs by $50 million and moving $181 million over from its preventive maintenance fund.

The drastic cuts Metro warned of in December ahead of the budget passing were largely averted when the region came to the table with an additional $463 million — D.C. offered $200 million, Virginia contributed $119.4 million and Maryland added $143.3 million.

The transit system said its operating gap was due to subsidy reductions to the surrounding jurisdictions, millions in counteracting inflation and a decrease in revenue since the pandemic.

Jennifer Lopez was spotted on a commercial flight traveling from Naples, Italy, to Paris on Saturday, photos obtained by TMZ show.

The “Let’s Get Loud” singer, 54, is worth an estimated $400 million, but she opted not to take a private jet to the City of Light.

Not only did she not fly private, Lopez traveled on an Air France flight and sat in a window seat in the economy section.

She appeared to have also reserved the seat next to her, where she placed her large handbag. Her bodyguard traveled with her and sat in the aisle seat, according to the Daily Mail .

Business class seats were not an option on the flight.

Lopez arrived in Paris on Monday and attended the Dior show debuting the fashion house’s haute couture fall 2024 collection.

The “Hustlers” star left Italy after enjoying a relaxing vacation without her husband, Ben Affleck.

She took a boat ride with friends in Positano and couldn’t stop taking selfies while rocking a $99 white one-piece Gooseberry bathing suit.

Also during the trip, Lopez went out to dinner with two pals — one man and one woman — at an upscale restaurant.

“Jen loves vacationing in Europe during the summer,” a source told “Entertainment Tonight” on Monday. “It’s been nice for her to experience a change of pace and have some breathing room. She has been having a blast with her friends.”

The insider added, “That’s never really been Ben’s scene, even when him and Jen weren’t having any issues. Jen isn’t letting the fact that Ben’s not there bring her down.”

The trip comes weeks after Lopez canceled her summer tour.

JLO at Paris Fashion Week 2024

On Tuesday, a source told People that Lopez was “grateful” for time to herself, and that she and Affleck are “doing their own thing so far this summer.”

“Jennifer’s having a wonderful time in Europe. She loves Italy and visits every year. She’s grateful for a break,” the insider said. “The past few weeks have been emotional for her. Ben has been working in LA and is spending time with his kids. Everyone seems to be doing OK.”

Lopez and Affleck, 51, have been spending time apart as reports claim that they’re heading for a divorce two years after tying the knot.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez in Paris

While Lopez was in Italy, her husband has been trying to lie low in Los Angeles, where he’s filming the sequel to his 2016 movie “The Accountant.”

The Massachusetts-raised actor made headlines, though, for confronting paparazzi who were using flash cameras as he was behind the wheel pulling out of his and Lopez’s Beverly Hills mansion that’s rumored to be up for sale . Affleck got out of his car and chastised the photographers, warning them that they’re putting his life in danger.

The breakup rumors about the couple started when Lopez attended the Met Gala by herself in May.

Since then, the pair have been seen out together only a handful of times, including at Affleck’s 12-year-old son Samuel’s graduation earlier this month.  Lopez arrived separately and kept her distance at the event.

A source told People on June 11 that Lopez and Affleck “are still friendly and see each other every few days.”

The stars have not publicly addressed the speculation about their relationship.

Tennessee will open its 2024 campaign against Chattanooga at Neyland Stadium on Aug. 31.

In anticipation of the season opener, VolReport is highlighting a former Vols player whose jersey number matches the amount of days until kickoff.

TALK ABOUT IT IN THE ROCKY TOP FORUM

With 72 days to go, George Cafego , who was the SEC Player of the Year and played on some of the most dominating teams of the Robert Neyland era, is selected.

Cafego came to Tennessee by way of West Virginia, joining the Vols in 1936. He served as a halfback, totaling 2,139 yards while averaging more than six yards per carry over three seasons and earning All-America honor twice in his college career.

Cafego, who earned the moniker, "bad news," was key part of two consecutive unbeaten Tennessee teams in the regular season in 1938 and 1939, starring for the Vols as a runner, passer, blocker and on special teams.

Tennessee won the first of four national championships under Neyland following an 11-0 season and Orange Bowl victory over Oklahoma in 1938.

"On the practice field he couldn't do anything right," Neyland said of Cafego. "But for two hours on a Saturday afternoon he did everything an All- American is supposed to do."

Cafego was taken in the first round of the 1940 NFL Draft, playing two seasons with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1940 and 1943 with two years interrupted by a stint in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He played for the Washington Redskins for one season in 1943 and Boston Yanks in 1944-45 before beginning his coaching career.

Cafego was an assistant coach at Furman , Wyoming and Arkansas before returning to Tennessee in 1955. He served on the staff of four different Vols' head coaches over nearly 30 years in Bowden Wyatt , Jim McDonald , Doug Dicke y, Bill Battle and Johnny Majors.

Cafego was selected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1969.
