History of the Marquee Club

Getting There

Famous Artists Who Played Here

Opened in April of 1958, by Harold Pendleton (secretary of the National Jazz Federation) the Marquee Club was one of the world’s premiere live-music venues until it’s closer in the 1990’s. Although a small and a remarkably affordable and accessible venue, it still launched the glittering careers of multiple world-famous musical acts.

The Club began as an intimate venue in a basement on Oxford Street originally hosting Jazz performances. In 1964 the club moved into the heart of Soho on 90 Wardour Street and soon began hosting acts in the rock genre, then later including punk, new wave, and hard rock as the years would go on. This location would become ‘The Marquee Club’ (an exhaustingly warm, sweaty, sticky venue that was meant to hold no more than 700 people but routinely was packed with as many as 1,000..!) that generations would remember.

The Wardour Street location was ordered to be demolished in 1987 as the constant vibrations of the music blaring from the venue over 30 years had slowly moved the entire facade of the building, which began dangerously tilting toward the pavement. Therefore, the club would move one more time, to Charing Cross Road, in 1988 but this final version would be closed less than a decade later. Today this final location is the home of a Wetherspoon’s pub.

So far the Marquee Club has remained closed but talks are underway (as of time of writing - June 2017) to open a new club which would also host a permanent exhibition featuring the history of the Club

Though the Marquee Club closed its doors in 1996, you can still visit the buildings where it was once located. There are 3 former locations -- each in Soho -- and all visited on our Rock N' Roll Tour of London !

Fico kicks off national "fields of financial empowerment" summer tour with chelsea football club and u.s. soccer foundation, fico to champion financial education for teens and adults throughout chelsea fc&closecurlyquote;s u.s. tour.

FICO, a leading software analytics software company, is teaming up with Chelsea Football Club (FC) and U.S. Soccer Foundation again this year to launch the next phase of their partnership to empower consumers through access to financial education at all stops of Chelsea FC’s pre-season tour. New this year, FICO is expanding its partnership with Chelsea FC to include the sponsorship of the women’s team in addition to continuing to be the primary official partner of the Club’s men’s team as it heads to the United States.

“We are delighted to be extending our partnership with FICO as we make the final preparations for our pre-season tour in the U.S. It’s important to us to engage deeply with the communities we’re fortunate enough to visit in the States, beyond the excitement delivered on the pitch, so to have the opportunity to continue the work we started last summer is a very positive step.

“We’re excited to be working with such a prestigious and renowned organization again, through whom we will continue to deliver incredibly valuable sessions and resources to help educate fans across the U.S. on the importance of financial literacy. By also including our Women’s team in the partnership, we will be able to inspire even more people to access the resources FICO makes available to help them understand how to achieve their financial goals,” said Casper Stylsvig, chief revenue officer for Chelsea Football Club.

Nearly 35 years ago, FICO created the FICO ® Score as a standard measure of consumer credit risk in the United States. Today, the FICO Score is used by 90% of U.S. lenders to help extend credit for personal loans, mortgages, auto loans, credit cards and more.

As part of FICO’s “Fields of Financial Empowerment” tour, Chelsea and the U.S. Soccer Foundation will assist FICO in raising excitement for, and access to, financial education and resources to help more people, including the next generation of fans, in their financial journeys. Together, the organizations will work to expand access to financial education, especially credit education, so that more people have the insight and tools needed to understand how to achieve their goals.

“As the national leader for sports-based youth development in under-resourced areas, we believe that access to soccer can change everything. The same is true with financial education,” said Ed Foster-Simeon, president and CEO of the U.S. Soccer Foundation . “Through this collaboration, we’re bringing important resources to teens that will help set them up for success, on the field and in life.”

FICO will host free Score A Better Future™ (SABF) Fundamentals financial education workshops for students in the cities where Chelsea will be playing during the summer tour, including Santa Clara, Calif.; South Bend, Ind.; Atlanta, Ga.; Columbus, Ohio; Charlotte, N.C.; Harrison, N.J.; and Washington, D.C. Additionally, adults will have the opportunity to participate in SABF workshops during select stops of the tour. Workshop participants will also have the opportunity to attend their local match for free to catch the Blues in action.

"This is an incredibly exciting time for fans, especially with the growing popularity for women's sports and soccer in the United States," said Nikhil Behl, executive vice president at FICO . "Through the Fields of Financial Empowerment tour, we are broadening access to financial education through our workshops and resources, providing a key building block for people to achieve their financial goals. As FICO continues to innovate and drive financial empowerment, we are evolving our program to reach and inspire more people to take control of their financial futures.”

In addition to live SABF Fundamentals workshops, FICO provides resources to help people enhance their financial literacy, understand credit, and make empowered decisions. This includes on-demand workshops, credit education materials and tools, as well as the myFICO website and app that enable consumers to check and monitor their FICO ® Score for free.

Nicknamed ‘The Blues’, the club lifted the Champions League for the first time in 2012 and has also won the Premier League five times, the FA Cup eight times, the Football League Cup five times, the UEFA Europa League twice, the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup twice, the UEFA Super Cup twice and the Football League Championship once, in 1955.

The 2021 Champions League and Super Cup triumphs ensured Chelsea became the first club to win four major UEFA club competitions twice, following our earlier successes in those two competitions as well as the Europa League and Cup Winners’ Cup.

The Chelsea Women’s team have enjoyed a huge amount of success and in 2024 won the FA Women’s Super League for a fifth consecutive year and the seventh time overall. The Women’s FA Cup has been won on five occasions. The team has also captured the FA Women’s League Cup twice as well as reaching the UEFA Women’s Champions League final in 2021.

In addition to possessing some of the world’s most recognisable players, Chelsea has also invested in its future with a state-of-the-art Academy and training centre in Cobham, Surrey. Since the Academy building’s opening in 2008, the club has won seven FA Youth Cups, back-to-back UEFA Youth League titles in 2015 and 2016, and the U23 and U18 Premier League national championships most recently in 2019/20 and 2017/18 respectively.

The Chelsea Foundation boasts one of the most extensive community initiatives in sport, helping to improve the lives of children and young people all over the world.

AFL guns for hire as Dane Swan joins players drawing crowds for country football clubs

Only days before he was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame, ex-Collingwood premiership player Dane Swan was a long way from the hallowed turf of the MCG.

Instead, he was in far west New South Wales for a two-hour venture with the South Broken Hill Kangaroos, the latest in a series of marquee games he plays each year at local AFL clubs across the country.

Scheduled to appear at 12 games this year, the 40-year-old said, beyond the fee arranged between his management and the clubs, he enjoys giving back to regional fans.

He said they could find it harder to travel to high-level games in metropolitan areas.

"The further you go away from Melbourne you realise [how] appreciative some people can be," Swan said.

A group of men in red and white guernseys with a couple of children posing on an afl oval in front of some stands.

"It's a pleasure for me.

"I've been out of the game eight years, so to still have an impact [and] people still wanting me to come around and do these things is nice."

Marquee games an ongoing tradition

The Silver City is no stranger to bringing in marquee players.

Fellow ex-elites like Carlton's Anthony Koutoufides and Brendan Fevola, and Jason Akermanis of the Brisbane Lions, have also laced up their boots for the league's North, West, and Central clubs in recent years.

South Broken Hill Football Club President Michael Purcell said having former AFL professionals playing for country sides is fantastic for local morale.

"There was nothing [Dane] wouldn't do, he wore jumpers, he met with the kids," Mr Purcell said.

"He went and visited a lady in a home [who's] a Collingwood supporter that's not doing too well at the moment.

A man in a hoodie and shorts standing with his arm around an older woman standing next to a framed guernsey and plaque

"There wasn't a time where you felt 'I've got to save him', because he actually wanted to be there."

The 2011 Brownlow medallist's presence was also felt on the field, playing all four quarters, each in a different position, and kicking six goals in the club's 116-point win over the Central Magpies.

"I still love getting out there [and] five minutes into the game, I've forgotten that I'm in Broken Hill, Swan Hill [or] Adelaide," he said.

Roosters expect 'grand final' worthy crowds

Robinson celebrates during Carlton win

Meanwhile on the Eyre Peninsula, the remote coastal community of Elliston – 170 kilometres north-west of Port Lincoln – will get to watch St Kilda alumni Steven Milne and former Brisbane Lions and Carlton player Mitch Robinson play for their local team this weekend.

Milne and Robinson are the latest ex-AFL players to get a run for the Elliston Districts Roosters, with Swan also donning the club's red, white and gold guernsey last year at Poochera Oval near Streaky Bay.

Club President Zack Wilson said last year's fixture with Swan "dragged in another two to three hundred people" to the tiny town of Poochera, which has a resting population of 67 according to the 2021 census.

"It was more like hosting a grand final than a regular season game," he said.

A group of kids dressed in red footy uniforms huddles around a man in the same uniform.

"The crowd they draw in and then the exposure to the club and the league they bring is beneficial."

Mr Wilson said his club had a connection to a player agent who managed all three players, which made the arrangement possible.

He said the players' fees were funded by the club's sports centre, which was also used by other local sports clubs.

"It means we don't have to fundraise for the players, which other clubs probably do," he said.

A worthwhile investment

These types of games do not come cheap, with Mr Purcell estimating the weekend's expenses, including Swan's fee, to be more than $10,000.

However, he said several local businesses came on board as sponsors to help offset some of these costs.

He also said the day's various fundraisers, which included raffle tickets for Swan's playing guernseys and auctioning his signed club gear, would generate a larger income than they could have raised on a single weekend event.

"It's an unbelievable investment … the support that we got and just going through the figures ... it's going to be very hard to top," Mr Purcell said.

"And the money gets to go back straight into our juniors, [and making] any changes to the club for our members.

"It costs a lot of money to run clubs ... so it's come at a great time for us."

As for Swan, he said while the glory days are behind him, he loves playing the game while he still can.

"I don't care if I have one [kick] or I have 100 … as long as the footy club that I go to have a great day, make some money and have a couple of decent memories of me, that's all that matters," he said.

Golf Galaxy employee knocks back three beers then qualifies for PGA Tour event

Three beers is apparently the perfect amount for this golfer.

Nick Bienz, a Golf Galaxy employee, survived a playoff qualifier to play in this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic after downing a few cold ones.

Bienz, 27, shot 7-under 65 thanks to a 12-foot birdie on the 18th hole at The Orchards Golf Club in Michigan, tying four other golfers looking to make it into the PGA Tour event.

A perhaps slightly wobbly Bienz survived the eight-hole playoff, qualifying for his first-ever PGA Tour-sanctioned event with a little buzz on.

“I have to call my boss and call off work tomorrow for sure,” Bienz said after the round, per Golfweek. “I’m supposed to be there at 7:30 in the morning (Tuesday) and I don’t think that’s going to happen.”

If this four minutes doesn’t make you love Mondays I can’t help you.

Nick Bienz works at Golf Galaxy, has never played any pga tour sanctioned event, he is so nervous he’s pounding beers. Just shot 65.

Please take the time to watch this. pic.twitter.com/BeXgsjiWFv

Bienz will be one of 156 golfers at Detroit Golf Club on Thursday and playing for a purse of $9.2 million.

He’ll tee off at 2:22 p.m. ET in the last grouping of the day alongside Rafael Campos and Anders Albertson.

“This is by far the craziest day of my life,” Bienz wrote on X. “Thank you so much to everyone. Let’s have a freaking week!”

Bienz appeared on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday ahead of his big weekend in Detroit.

“Everybody needs a little swing oil,” Bienz said. “It’s just about finding the right balance. For me, it just happened to be three.”

There is more international football on the horizon and here is how you can follow all the action involving Chelsea’s South Americans at this summer’s Copa America.

The expanded 2024 edition of the Copa America features several nations from the CONCACAF region in addition to the traditional sides from CONMEBOL, and will be played outside of South America for just the second time in its history, with the USA hosting for a second time, eight years after the first.

Our European internationals are already in action at Euro 2024 in Germany this summer, but the South Americans will join them in their own continental championship when the Copa America kicks off tonight.

With the tournament taking place around the US, matches will be played late at night or in the early hours of the morning UK time.

Holders Argentina will kick off the Copa America against Canada tonight at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, which is where Chelsea will take on Club America in the third game of our US Tour .

Ecuador will also get their campaign underway at another of the grounds we will be visiting during Chelsea's US Tour 2024 , when they play Venezuela at Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara, which will host our clash against Wrexham .

And the Copa America third-place play-off - plus one of the semi-finals - will also be held at another of the Blues' destinations this summer: the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte where we will play Champions League holders Real Madrid .

Argentina – Enzo Fernandez

Winners of the last Copa America and World Cup, Argentina go into this competition as favourites to retain their crown and become only the second country in history to win three consecutive major tournaments – following Spain in 2008-2012. They have failed to win just one match since their opening game of the 2022 World Cup.

Having recovered from the injury which forced him to miss the end of our Premier League campaign, Enzo Fernandez is expected to line-up in the centre of Argentina’s midfield alongside Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister, just as he did during their World Cup triumph.

Argentina's group fixtures:

Argentina v Canada - Friday 21 June, 1am BST (Mercedes Benz Stadium, Atlanta) Chile v Argentina - Wednesday 26 June, 2am BST (MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford) Argentina v Peru - Sunday 30 June, 1am BST (Hard Rock Stadium, Miami)

Ecuador – Moises Caicedo (and Kendry Paez)

Ecuador go into this Copa America with hopes of surpassing their best previous performance of fourth place in 1993. Their only defeats in the last year have been to world champions Argentina and European title holders Italy, and they go into this tournament following back-to-back wins over Bolivia and Guatemala in their warm-up games.

Moises Caicedo will take on a similar holding midfielder role to the one he occupies with Chelsea, having started every competitive match for his country for over two years.

Ahead of him is likely to be Kendry Paez, the youngest player at this Copa America who will join Chelsea after his 18th birthday next May, who became a regular in Ecuador’s No10 position during their World Cup qualifying campaign.

Ecuador's group fixtures:

Ecuador v Venezuela - Saturday 22 June, 11pm BST (Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara) Ecuador v Jamaica - Wednesday 26 June, 11pm BST (Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas) Mexico v Ecuador - Monday 1 July, 1am BST (State Farm Stadium, Glendale)
