During World War 2, the Japanese soldiers forced Filipinos to dig up tunnels and air-raid shelters in Bulan, Sorsogon. These tunnels were assigned as places of safety and ammunition storage areas for the Japanese forces. Today, these tunnels are still intact and well-preserved. You will find elevated sections and a chapel inside. The entrance is so small that only one person can enter at a given time. You also need to bend and crawl to reach the main areas of this cave system.

The Bulan tunnels are now important historical sites that remind people of how much the Philippines had to endure to fight for freedom. You can find the tunnels in Barangay San Francisco and Sta Remedios Bulan, Sorsogon. Visiting them is free of charge. Visiting hours are from 9 AM to 8 PM daily.

Museo Sorsogon was once an Old Provincial Jail but it was restored by the local government to become a place that showcases the history and culture of Sorsogon. The Sorsogon Provincial Tourism Culture and Arts Office manages this museum and the office aims to make it a prominent Sorsogon tourist spot.

The building has two floors and ten galleries, which are converted jail cells. The galleries feature exhibitions that tell the origins of Sorsogon, the province’s participation in the Philippine Revolution, and the state of the region during the American occupation. Located in Barangay Talisay in Prieto Diaz, Bigaho Ecopark is named after a grass family that locals use to create handicrafts. It’s not a short walk, but the journey is made easier with the several species of mangroves along the bridge. These protected species help keep the path to the ecopark cool.

Apart from taking in the gorgeous scenery, a visit here will also allow you to hike, trek, camp, and commune with nature. Botong Twin Falls is situated in Osiao, Bacon District of Sorsogon City. The falls are considered one of the top eco-tourism spots in the city area. The site is considered a natural wonder as it features two waterfalls standing close to each other but they give out two different watercolors.

The first waterfall has green-colored water while the other one reflects blue. This phenomenon is the reason why the Botong Twin Falls are fondly called Blue and Green Falls. 

Botong Twin Falls is a great place to swim and have a picnic with family and friends. There are picnic huts and tables set up around the falls for visitors to use. These waterfalls stand within the compounds of the PNOC-BACMAN Geothermal Plant. Although the site is open to the public, you need to coordinate with the PNOC before visiting the falls. 

Palogtoc Falls (Palogtok Falls) resides in San Roque, Bulusan Municipality, and is one of the more low-key Bicol tourist spots you can find. Palogtoc Falls is a natural grotto that features a small cascade that falls into an artificial pool. Visitors tend to love the spring water in this pool because it is clean, clear, and refreshing.  

The Palagtok area exudes a tranquil atmosphere. It has a lush landscape, surrounded by coconut and pili nut trees. There is a nearby river and some nipa and bamboo huts where visitors can enjoy some shade. 

You can access Palogtoc Falls from the Mount Bulusan trailhead between the Bulusan park entrance and San Roque. You need to walk about 500 meters from this trailhead to reach the falls. 

Dancalan Beach is nestled on the shoreline of Bulusan Municipality. This beach is clean, wide, and has gray/off-white colored sand. Dancalan can easily get overlooked by tourists, but it is popular among locals.

Dancalan has a rustic look and feel. It features pleasant countryside scenery. Just right in front of this Sorsogon beach lies a vast rice field. Towering mountains in the distance serve as a picturesque backdrop to Dancalan. 

Dancalan Beach is an excellent swimming beach for children as it remains shallow (1-2 feet) even at about 40 meters from the shoreline. There is a minimal entrance fee to the beach, and you can also rent open-air nipa huts for a reasonable price. It is also quite common for visitors to pitch a tent on the beach.

San Bernardino Island lies off the coast of Bulusan, Sorsogon, and across the San Bernardino Strait. The island is mostly undeveloped and has maintained its natural beauty. 

San Bernardino has beautiful hills, a lush landscape, and ocean panoramas. Its other main attraction is an old lighthouse built more than a century ago. This structure ( El Faro De Islote De San Bernardino in Spanish) was one of the most important lighthouses in the Spanish colonial era. It used to guide boats into the Philippine capital,  Manila , from the Pacific Ocean and vice versa. The San Bernardino Strait is well-known for its treacherous waters.

The St. Joseph Parish Church sits at the heart of Barcelona town, Sorsogon. According to local stories, homesick Spanish soldiers named this town after the renowned Barcelona in Spain. Thus, St. Joseph Parish is also commonly referred to as Barcelona Church.  

St. Joseph was built in 1874 by the Franciscan priests. It is the oldest of all churches in the Bicol region and is considered to be one of the most beautiful. Some of St Joseph Church's original structures like the facade, walls, and bell tower have remained intact. However, administrators needed to renovate the church interiors and reinforce the windows with glass and steel. If you walk from the church and across the streets, you will find some century-old building ruins. 

The gorgeous Panumbagan Sandbar stands off the shoreline of Barangay Bantayan Pilar, Sorsogon. For a sandbar, Panumbagan is big and long and can pass off as an islet. It stretches to more than 5-kilometers and features white pebbly sand. Aside from having ocean views, the sandbar also offers panoramas of the Mayon and Bulusan Volcanoes. 

The surrounding waters Panumbagan Sandbar is a marine sanctuary, so this area is a great spot to snorkel. Even if you decide not to go underwater, you can still find sea urchins, sea grapes, and starfish close to shore. To reach Panumbagan Sandbar, you need to take a 50-minute boat ride from Pilar port. The sandbar is a popular stop for boat tours exploring the area. 

Mt. Pulog stands high in the municipality of Bacon, Sorsogon. It is a different mountain from Mt. Pulag in North Luzon, which is the highest peak in Luzon and one of the best hiking spots in the Philippines . Although Mt. Pulog is the lesser-known peak, it is an excellent mountaineering destination for compelling reasons. 

Mt. Pulog features lush scenery and offers amazing views of the Pacific Ocean. It is a relatively easy hike that most people can finish in less than a day. Thus, you don’t have to be an expert hiker to take on Mt. Pulog. The mountain trail begins with hiking through the rural woodlands, where you will encounter native plants and trees like pili and abaca. The steeper part of the trail brings you through a thick forest and green fields. At the summit sits a scenic round-shaped lake. 

The gateway to Mt. Pulog is Barangay San Cruz, which is about 9KM away from Sorsogon City. Once you arrive in Sta. Cruz, it’s easy to find a guide to take you to the peak.

Bahay na Bato refers to the collection of Spanish colonial houses nestled in the town of Juban, Sorsogon. Constructed in 1898, the centuries-old houses are called “Bahay na Bato” (house of stone) because of their stone brick foundation. 

These stone bricks formed the base of the houses while the upper structure is made of wood. Another striking feature of the houses is their large sliding windows that are made of hardwood and embellished with capiz shells. The "Bahay na Bato" structures have collectively become the pride of Juban and a major Sorsogon tourist spot.

Because they are unique, well-preserved and a reminder of the Spanish colonial period. Most of these stone homes stand alongside the Maharlika Highway in the town proper of Juban.

The Geneblazo family established the Juag Lagoon Fish Sanctuary to become a safe and healthy habitat for aquatic animals and plants to thrive. Today, this privately owned sanctuary is open to the public who wish to learn about marine biodiversity and conservation. 

The fish sanctuary is set up like a fish farm, as it is enclosed with bamboo structures to protect the marine life in it. However, the owners do not harvest these sea creatures and make money from them. 

While here, visitors can swim/snorkel underwater and enter the bamboo enclosures to view sea creatures, reefs, and plants up close. Examples of marine species in the sanctuary include giant clams, marine turtles, lobsters, sea cucumbers, and oysters. 

The Juag Lagoon Fish Sanctuary lies off the coast of the Matnog town port. It is one of the usual stops of a standard Matnog island hopping tour itinerary.

Sitting at the foothills of Bulusan Volcano, Irosin is a town blessed with geothermally heated groundwater. It is also a valley town that has access to an abundant supply of cold spring water. Because of these properties, Irosin became home to several cold and spring resorts. Today, people refer to this town as the springs resort capital of Sorsogon and the Bicol Region. 

Some of the prominent resorts in the area include Tropical Hot Spring Paradise, Nature Hot Spring Resort, Aramaru Resort, and 401K Resort. Locals believe that the cold and hot springs in Irosin have healing qualities. Whether this claim is accurate or not, the spring resorts still attract a lot of people. Guests find it relaxing and refreshing to dip in the resorts' natural spring pools.

Prieto Diaz Mangrove Ecopark is the ultimate eco-tourism destination in Sorsogon. As its name suggests, this eco-park consists of over 300 hectares of extensive mangrove forest and mangrove plantation. It is home to 19 species of mangrove, fish sanctuaries, and protected coral reefs. You can visit this mangrove sanctuary as part of a Sorsogon countryside tour .

The social welfare group Semancor, manages the activities in this eco-park. This group is composed of women, the elderly, out-of-school youth, and fishermen.

Another highlight within the park is the Halabang Lapis sandbar, visible during low tide and is admired for its powder white sand. Paguriran Island and Lagoon is one of the natural wonders of Sorsogon. Travel guides best describe it as a lagoon in the middle of the ocean. Strictly speaking, Paguriran is not an island but more like a large rocky formation out in the sea. Despite being surrounded by water, Paguriran is within walking distance from a sandy shore. You can walk to it during low tide or even high tide when the water level is usually waist-high.

The tourism highlight of Paguriran is its lagoon that occupies the hollow middle portion of the rocky islet. The water in this lagoon reflects a clear aquamarine color, which is considered world-class. The jumping point to Paguriran Island is Barangay Sawangga, Bacon. From Sorsogon City, you can ride a jeepney or a tricycle to the town of Bacon. 

Ogod River is one of the natural attractions found in Donsol, Sorsogon. Tourists make their way to Ogod for a special type of river cruising. This cruising happens at night so passengers can view hundreds of magical fireflies light up the dark skies.

Many people consider Rizal Beach Sorsogon one of the best beaches in the Bicol region because of its raw beauty. Locals love to swim and hang out on this beach, especially in the afternoon. 

Subic Beach is a gorgeous and unspoiled 300-meter sandy stretch on Calintaan Island, Sorsogon. The beach is known for its powdery sand, which features a pinkish-white color. This rare color is due to the presence of tiny red corals around the shoreline. Complementing the unique sand color is the clear turquoise waters, which make Subic Beach very photogenic.

Subic Beach gives off a laid-back vibe and is seldom busy with crowds. It is not ideal for beginner swimmers because the tides are often high, and the water level near the shore is deep.   When in Sorsogon, it’s a sin not to try the tempting local delicacies.  Pili nut candy abounds everywhere in the province, there’s also the famous binut-ong – sticky rice with coconut milk, timitim (akin to cassava cake), and hinagom – brown cake made of sticky rice. My favorite local dishes when I was a child were kinagang ( crayfish meat blended with coconut meat and milk, leaves of mint and wrapped by hagikhik ) and kinunot  (sting ray and shark simmered in coconut milk but is now rare because it’s made of endangered species).  Ensaladang lato (seaweed), tahong, and crabs with coconut milk and p inangat , available at Bigajo Kitchenette, The House of Pinangat are also must-try local favorites.

Take a dip in the Hot and Cold Springs of Irosin

Irosin is  bursting with natural springs such as Mateo Hot and Cold Spring or San Benon, a local favorite. Mapaso Spring nestled at the foot of Mt. Bulusan in Monbon also prides itself with volcanic water believed to have healing properties. Or you can also opt to soothe your tired body at N ature Spring Resort and Inn  by taking a dip at their spotless  pool with sulfuric waters believed to have therapeutic effects on aching muscles. 2. Tikling Island

We’re just getting started! Right next on our list is another must-visit island destination known for its untouched beauty. Tikling Island is a privately-owned property that became popular for its pinkish fine white sands, aquamarine waters, and lush forests.

There is absolutely no entrance fee required to visit Tikling Island and there are no cottages, huts, or resorts established anywhere. So it’s really a bare island where you can peacefully relax and appreciate nature’s virgin beauty at its finest. You are free to explore and swim around the island where you can take pictures of some stunning rock formations, coral reefs, and colorful fishes!

3. Bulusan Volcano Natural Park

Ah, there it is! Probably the most iconic attraction in Sorsogon City and undoubtedly its most precious gem is Mt. Bulusan. Standing tall at an elevation of 1,565 meters above sea level, this stratovolcano is one of the most active volcanoes in our country next to Mayon, Taal, and Pinatubo.

The volcano is also home to a thriving ecosystem that is well-preserved and protected by the 3,673-hectare Bulusan Volcano Natural Park. There are several lakes, rivers, and rainforest landmarks within the vicinity of the natural park where tourists can visit and observe beautiful species of flora and fauna. And speaking of which, there are also rare animals living inside the park such as Flame-Breasted Fruit-Dove, Philippine Hawk-Eagle, Warty Pigs, Monitor Lizards, and many more!

Actually, Mt. Bulusan just recently had an alarming phreatic eruption which forced thousands of residents of Sorsogon to evacuate. The volcano had two major activities within the 2nd week of June 2022.

4. Paguriran Island and Lagoon

The locals even say that the Mayon Volcano sometimes makes an appearance during a clear, bright day!

7. Juag Lagoon Marine Sanctuary

The Juag Lagoon Marine Sanctuary is a fantastic attraction aimed to promote the preservation of aquatic wildlife animals such as different species of fishes, corals, and other sea creatures. It provides an all-in learning experience especially for children because they’ll be able to closely meet and interact with various colors and sizes of fish!

10. Ogod River (Firefly Watching)

Hmm, we’re done interacting with whale sharks, various species of fishes, and also some lovely wild animals at the Bulusan Volcano Natural Park, right? Well, now it’s time to go Firefly Watching at the Ogod River! This one’s actually located in Donsol as well, so it usually comes with whale shark watching as a package.

Cruising through the peaceful Ogod River in the dark of the night and just enjoying the quiet and serene state of the forest is already quite an experience you’ll never forget. But wait ‘til you witness the aesthetically pleasing spectacle brought upon by the emergence of the lovely fireflies flickering around the trees. It’s truly an amazing and romantic sight you shouldn’t miss!

11. St. Joseph Parish (Barcelona Church)

The St. Joseph Parish or more commonly known as the Barcelona Church is Sorsogon’s most-visited religious landmark thanks to its amazing architecture and colorful history. Built in the year 1874, the church is now almost 150 years old but still portrays how Christianity plays a huge role in the everyday life of Filipinos.

The church itself is a spectacle in itself because the original design of the facade was perfectly preserved as well as the interior paintings, mosaics, and statues of saints. After offering some thoughts and prayers during your visit, I suggest that you also take some time to visit the equally famous Barcelona Ruins Park. This incredible landmark has become a popular picture-taking spot thanks to the scenic and nostalgic structure and the beautiful landscape in the background.

12. Palogtoc Falls

You’ll be surprised how a small waterfall, known as the Palogtoc or Palogtok Falls was ingeniously utilized by the creative minds of Bicolanos as they were able to build a man-made earthen leisure pool where tourists and locals can bathe with crystalline cold waters!

Palogtoc Falls is indeed a wonderful natural attraction worth visiting in Sorsogon because it’s a nice place where families, friends, and even workmates can have memory-making activities by swimming, having a picnic, and bonding sessions.

13. Prieto Diaz Mangrove Ecopark

Another one of the highly anticipated unique experiences Sorsogon is offering is no other than the Prieto Diaz Mangrove Ecopark. The thriving mangrove ecosystem covers a huge area of more than 1,000 hectares where you can find several species of flora and fauna.

The breath of extremely fresh air, the silence of the forest, and the solid experience of cruising through the Mangrove River definitely is something you won’t be able to experience on a regular basis. So be prepared and make the most of it!

The creamy white sand, crescent-shaped beach, the crystalline waters, and the surrounding lush trees all promise an exciting beach getaway for everyone. Dancalan Beach is a public beach so anyone can book an all-day stay here for as low as P10! There are also cottages for rent as well as stalls scattered around the beach where you can buy food and drinks.

15. Mt. Pulog

Ah, finally! The perfect way to end our spectacular Sorsogon adventure is by conquering the peak of Mt. Pulog, one of the sought-after hiking destinations by several enthusiasts from different parts of the country. It’s actually coined as one of the Bicol region’s best-kept secret mountains.

Aside from the mesmerizing sight of the sea of clouds, the majestic Pacific Ocean, and the stunning landscapes of Sorsogon, it also has a breathtaking lake in the middle that really stuns everyone who witnesses it for the first time. It’s actually the main attraction of Mt. Pulog because it’s what makes it special as you can see from all the pictures of the mountain circling around the internet. Despite having a hotspot for sea creatures, Sorsogon is less known compared to its neighboring province of Albay, the home to the famous perfect cone of Mayon Volcano.

However, there are many Sorsogon tourist spots in various natural wonders unique to every town of Sorsogon. The province is progressively becoming an eco-tourism hub in the region, offering not just a logistical gateway into the Visayas area.

Sorsogon is a province in the Bicol Region with 14 towns and one city and lies on the southern tip of Luzon. Its capital, Sorsogon City, is the center of trade and government.

Most Sorsogon towns have coastal territories, which favors beach and island destinations, including mangrove parks. Apart from sea adventures, there are also amazing lakes, a volcano, and mountains for the extreme outdoor enthusiast.

1. Bulusan Lake

Sorsogon offers plenty of coastal destinations for beaches and lovely islands. Meanwhile, Bulusan Lake in Bulusan highlights its beautiful freshwater body as one of the top Sorsogon tourist spots.

Bulusan Lake lies within the Bulusan Volcano Natural Park, one of the protected rainforests in the Philippines. The park covers Mount Bulusan and the surrounding dense forest, including Lake Aguingay, Mount Sharp Peak, and Mount Hormahon.

The lake features calm emerald waters that occasionally reflect the blueish sky and its surrounding dense forest. Its serene ambiance makes it ideal to meditate, commune with nature, or nature appreciation at its finest.

You can enjoy your visit by riding a kayak and slowly mesmerizing it with its verdant green landscapes. You can also explore the park’s vicinity by trekking to nearby higher elevations and passing across the hanging bridge when opting to ride a kayak.

Bulusan Lake is breathtaking; you won’t miss taking landscape photos at every angle.

2. Mount Bulusan

For the extreme adventurers, hiking the summit of Mount Bulusan is one of the memorable memories you can cherish when exploring Sorsogon tourist spots.

Mount Bulusan peaks at 1,565 meters above sea level and sits within the borders of five municipalities of Sorsogon. With most of the volcano’s body in Bulusan, the major jump-off lies in Lake Bulusan in Bulusan Volcano National Park.

Gear up and conquer the heights and rainforests of Mount Bulusan. While trekking Mount Bulusan is for the experienced hikers, leading the summit takes at least two days.

Your journey starts with kayaking at the scenic Lake Bulusan leading to a trailhead. Passing across the dense rainforest, expect to witness the abundance of flora and fauna during your hike.

You also get to pass a second lake called Lake Aguingay at 890masl that is braced by Sharp peak and Mount Bulusan summit.

After all, the peak rewards a breathtaking view of the great height overlooking Lake Aguingay, the nearby towns, and even Mayon Volcano during lucky days.

As one of the active volcanoes in the Philippines, hiking Mount Bulusan is dependent on its current activity. You may need to register at the local tourism office and secure a permit, including a local guide.

3. Whale Sharks in Donsol

Whale shark watching is one of the top Sorsogon tourist spots in Donsol, a coastal town adjacent to Albay province. Local and international tourists gather in Donsol to witness the gentle giants of the sea.

Whale sharks, or locally known as butanding, are one of the large fish species in the world, which can weigh up to 20 tons and span up to 12 meters. Did you know that their diet consists mainly of krill and plankton?

These gentle giants visit Donsol from November up to June, with peak visibility during February to March.

Donsol advocates responsible tourism for their whale shark watching activities. Tourists can swim with the whale sharks with no contact and no feeding policy.

During your tour, your expert local guide will bring you to the nearest whale shark area and brief you on what to do and not during whale shark viewing and swimming.

4. Ogod River

Another tourist attraction not to miss is the Ogod River adventure, near the boundaries of Donsol and Pilar towns.

Ogod River is one of the unique Sorsogon tourist spots to visit for its firefly-watching attraction. While most of the tourist spots in Sorsogon are best enjoyed during the daylight, Ogod River showcases a different sight to behold when the dark covers the skies.

The river adventure starts by boat ride along the Ogod River, and local guides will bring you near the observation area. Travel down the river and watch the night sky lights up with tiny flashes from thousands of fireflies.

These tiny insects thrive within the dense mangrove forests near the Ogod River.

You might have seen a few fireflies in your area, but witnessing them in great numbers is somewhat magical and extraordinary.

5. Paguriran Lagoon

Swim in the aquamarine waters of Paguriran lagoon, off the coast of Sawanga Beach in Bacon District.

Paguriran lagoon is one of the top Sorsogon tourist spots for its natural beauty. Some refer to it as an island, but it is a small limestone formation with a clear hollow center that allows water to form a lagoon. During the daylight, the lagoon exudes tropical pool-like turquoise waters.

Access to the lagoon is a connected sandbar from Sawanga Beach that is visible during low tide and waist-deep during high tide.

Locals and tourists love the adventure of getting into the lagoon and swim in the shallow and warm waters. However, one must exercise precaution from sharp rocks, and wearing proper gear is of advantage.

To get here, you can ride jeepneys bound to Bacon district and get off at Barangay Sawanga. If you’re coming from Sorsogon City, travel time takes about 40 minutes.

6. Panumbagan Sandbar

The Panumbagan sandbar is a place to enjoy the sun, sea, and shoal when you’re in Pilar. This tamarind-shaped island lies off the southern part of the town and is 50 minutes away from Pilar Port.

With its raw beauty, the Panumbagan sandbar can become one of the thriving Sorsogon tourist spots in the future.

Enjoy a day full of fun in the white pebble sands of the sandbar, which stretches up to 5 kilometers. When the skies are clear, you can also spot Mount Mayon and Mount Bulusan differently.

Aside from enjoying the waters along the sandbar, the area is also a marine sanctuary. You can snorkel and witness the thriving biodiversity in Pilar.

One more exciting thing to do here is harvest sea grapes and find starfishes and edible sea urchins in the shallow waters.

7. Mt. Pulog

Mt. Pulog is an excellent alternative for chasing mountain peaks when exploring outdoor Sorsogon tourist spots. Settling amid mountain ranges of Sorsogon, you can find Mt. Pulog in the Bacon District of Sorsogon City.

While Mount Bulusan is one of the more popular peaks in Bicol, Mt. Pulog favors those who want to conquer the mountains on a day trip only.

Hikers can easily reach the peak with three to four hours, even if you’re a less experienced mountaineer.

The central drop-off point starts at Barangay Santa Cruz in a forested area, where abaca and pili trees flourish. Right after around an hour of trekking, you’ll reach a campsite with a lovely overlooking of the Pacific Ocean and the thick forests of Sorsogon. As you progress, the trail eventually gets steeper, and the forest gets denser.

The summit rewards hikers with an extraordinary water body called Pulog Lake on a seemingly perfect circle shape. A thick forest surrounds Pulog Lake, and descending into it is possible as well.

8. Rizal Beach in Gubat

Gubat town is progressively becoming a surfing hotspot in Sorsogon. A few minutes from the town center is the Rizal beach, a long stretch of the cove shoreline facing the Pacific Ocean.

Rizal Beach is one of the favorite Sorsogon tourist spots of the nearby towns for its fine sands and expansive shoreline. Aside from the clear waters, the moderately solid currents and sandy bottoms are ideal for surfing activities.

Trees fringed the cove, providing temporary shades when taking a swimming or surfing break. There are also cottages and resorts when planning for an extended stay.

When enthusiastic about surfing, there are surfing camps along the beach that offers affordable rental and tutorials for beginners.

Many nearby towns like to spend the weekends at Rizal Beach for its raw estate, offering an unspoiled tourist destination in Sorsogon.

9. Juag Fish Sanctuary

Subic Beach is not your typical beach with white sands and clear turquoise waters. The sands in Subic Beach have a unique pink hue that results from the remains of tiny red corals and shells.

There are a handful of agencies offering whale shark tours in Donsol. It’s recommended to stay for at least 2 days in Donsol to increase your chances of seeing the whale sharks.

There are different surfing destinations in Bicol: Puraran Beach in Catanduanes , Bagasbas Beach in Daet, and Buenavista Beach in Gubat. Gubat is ideal for beginners and it’s less crowded, which is perfect if you’re looking for somewhere a little quiet.

Surfing months start from October to March.

Historical and cultural buffs will enjoy strolling along Juban, a heritage town in Sorsogon. This place boasts several 18th century ancestral houses featuring Spanish and other European designs.

While most houses can only be viewed from outside, there is an open house called Casa Feliz which welcomes visitors for a tour and also offers select local delicacies, snacks and drinks (tsokolate).

Balay Buhay sa Uma Bee Farm is another must-see place in Bulusan. This 3.5-hectare farm is home to over 800 colonies of stingless bees and other types of flora and fauna.

It is open for day tour excursions. The farm also has accommodations for overnight stay and an in-house restaurant where you can order farm-to-table dishes.

Paguriran Lagoon is a natural lagoon located in Bacon, Sorsogon. It is often likened to Tangke Lagoon in Gigantes Islands . During high tide, green-ish saltwater fills the lagoon in which time you can enjoy a refreshing swim. You can also climb atop the surrounding limestone cliffs for cliff jumping.

The lagoon is located inside Paguriran Island Resort. While the shore here is ordinary, the lagoon itself is worth visiting for its unique feature.

The Buhatan River Cruise is an eco-adventure where you can ride a floating cabana along the Buhatan River in Barangay Buhatan, which is just several minutes away from Sorsogon City. The Prieto Diaz Mangrove Park covers about 300 hectares of mangrove forest, which helps keep the town safe from floods and is also home to 19 species of mangroves, protected sea corals, and various wildlife such as fishes, crabs, and indigenous species of birds.

Here you can enjoy a relaxing cruise across the mangrove park where you can commune with nature and observe wildlife such as birds. You can also do a stop over at Halabang Lapis Sand Bar, a white sand bar that offers views of Albay Gulf and Mayon Volcano.

Zoe’s Resort and Eco-Adventure Park is one of the newest attractions in Bulusan, Sorsogon. This resort offers various outdoor activities such as trekking, bamboo rafting, and ATV ride. But undoubtedly its highlights are the three falls: Kambal Busay Falls, Hidden Falls, and Hulugan Falls.

After a day at the sea in Donsol, head to a relaxing activity: firefly watching in Ogod River which is located in the same town.

Ogod River is home to thousands of fireflies. In 2011, the World Wildlife Fund planted over 10,000 mangrove seedlings in the area which served as nesting grounds for the fireflies. Today, it’s one of the best places in the country for firefly watching activity.

If you’re lucky, you can see thousands of fireflies in a night. Regardless, it’s a magical experience seeing these insects flying around the surrounding trees.

Pili is one of the top products in the Bicol Region. To those who want to learn more about it, there’s no better place to be than The Pili Haven.

The Pili Haven is a farm that grows pili trees and other types of tree species. They offer demos on how to prepare and enjoy pili, such as boiled and eaten with various dips or mixed with local chocolate to create a delicious pili-chocolate spread. They also offer workshops on how to use pili nut for home decor, furniture, and more.

The Pili Haven also has an in-house restaurant where you can enjoy their own take on local dishes (such as cana pasta with pili nuts and lemon-tanglad chia drink), cottage accommodations, and a lot of photo-worthy installations such as an abandoned red jeep.

If you’re into education or cultural tours, one of the places you can visit is the Corsiga Organic Vinegar Refinery in Bulan, Sorsogon. Here you can see first-hand how locals make local vinegars, from the kitchen to storage in jars.

Some hikers call Mount Pulog the secret mountain climbing spot in Sorsogon. (Not to be confused with Mount Pulag in Benguet .) From the jump-off point, you need to trek for 3-4 hours across plantations of pili, coconut, hagis, and other local trees to reach the summit.

At the summit, there is a circular valley that turns into a “lake” (called danum by the locals) during rainy season.

Aside from the beautiful view of the lake, it’s also possible to see Paguriran, Rapu Rapu, and Mount Bulusan when there is a clearing.

San Bernardino Island is a beautiful island located off the coast of Bulusan, about 45 minutes of boat ride away from Bulusan Poblacion. Its main feature is a lighthouse, referred to as El Faro De Islote De San Bernardino in Spanish. It is one of the most important lighthouses during the Spanish Colonial Era, as it is part of a network of lighthouses that guide ships following the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade.

Today, the San Bernardino Island Lighthouse stands intact, powered by solar panels. As of 2022, there are are government plans to restore it for tourism . Visitors can visit here to see the lighthouse and appreciate the view, as well as swim and freedive in the surrounding waters.

St. Michael the Archangel Parish Church is a common stopover for tourists in Irosin, Sorsogon. Also known as Irosin Hilltop Church, it is located on top of the hill. Visitors need to climb 74 steps to reach it. Beside the chapel is another hill called Little Baguio, where you can find the Grotto of the Virgin Mary.

The hill offers a scenic view of the town and the nearby Bulusan Volcano.

Located in Osia, Bacon, just severeal minutes away from the downtown area in Sorsogon City, you can find this natural wonder. Botong Twin Falls consists of two separate streams falling close to each other. What makes this waterfall unique is that one of the streams has a green color, while the other is blue. As such, people also refer to it as the Green and Blue Falls.

It is located inside the BacMan Geothermal Powerplant property. As such, interested visitors need to secure permission from the powerplant’s management first before visiting.

Located smack in the middle of Sorsogon City, Rompeolas Baywalk is a must-visit spot especially for first-time visitors in Sorsogon. Here you can take a leisurely stroll and visit food stalls for some local snacks & dishes.

Ticao Island is the main diving spot in Bicol Region. Although it is under Masbate Province, it’s easily accessible from Donsol which is only 1.5 hours away.

The main diving area in Ticao Island is Manta Bowl, which has 7 different dive sites. Here, manta rays can be seen all-year round. Other underwater animals can be seen in selected months, including whale sharks, thresher sharks, hammerhead sharks, and tiger sharks.

The hot springs of Irosin are situated at the base of Mt. Bulusan, a dormant volcano that adds to the beauty and mystique of the area. The water in the springs is heated by the volcano’s geothermal activity and is rich in minerals, making it ideal for relaxation and healing.

Irosin Hot Springs offers several pools of varying temperatures, ranging from 32°C to 40°C, which are perfect for soaking and unwinding. The pools are surrounded by lush greenery, and the fresh mountain air adds to the overall experience. There are also private hot tubs available for those who prefer a more secluded experience.

5. Museo Sorsogon – Sorsogon Tourist Spots

Museo Sorsogon, also known as the Sorsogon Museum and Heritage Center, is a museum located in the city of Sorsogon, in the province of Sorsogon , Philippines. The museum was established to conserve and nurture the rich cultural heritage of the region and is considered one of the most important cultural institutions in the Bicol region.

The Museo Sorsogon is housed in a heritage building that was built in 1934 and used to be the Sorsogon Provincial Hospital. The building was renovated and converted into a museum in 2007 with the support of the National Museum of the Philippines and the local government of Sorsogon.

The museum has several galleries that showcase the history and culture of Sorsogon, including its natural resources, arts and crafts, traditional costumes, religious practices, and political history. The museum also houses a collection of artifacts from the pre-colonial and colonial periods, including ancient pottery, burial jars, and gold jewelry.

6. St. Peter and Paul Cathedral Parish Sorsogon – Sorsogon Tourist Spots

St. Peter and Paul Cathedral is a historic and prominent Catholic church located in the heart of Sorsogon City, in the province of Sorsogon, Philippines. It is one of the most well-known landmarks of the city, and its history can be traced back to the Spanish colonial period.

The cathedral was first built in 1640, but it was destroyed by fire and rebuilt several times over the centuries. The current structure was built in 1864 by the Augustinian friars and underwent several renovations and restorations over the years.

The interior of the cathedral is equally impressive, with a nave and aisles that are decorated with beautiful stained glass windows, intricate frescoes, and ornate altars. The main altar is dedicated to St. Peter and Paul, the patron saints of the cathedral, and is adorned with gold leaf and religious sculptures.

The cathedral is not only a place of worship but also a cultural and historical landmark in Sorsogon. It has been a witness to many significant events in the city’s history, including the Philippine Revolution, World War II, and various religious and cultural celebrations.

7. Bulusan Volcano Natural Park – Sorsogon Tourist Spots

Sorsogon is located near many natural backpacker locations, and one of them is Bulusan Volcano Natural Park, a sheltered area full of animals and plants kinds. The recreational area is located at the bottom of Mount Bulusan, and the woodland adjacent to Mt. Bulusan has announced as a National Park in 1935.

The major interest of the recreational area is Bulusan Lake, transversing 16.43 hectares and 33 meters deep. The boat ride over the lake was a heartfelt experience. We obtain to take supremacy of the calmness of the lake and cherish the natural beauty of the area. From the lake, visitors can journey to Mt. Bulusan.

There are also 100 hectares of the Rattan Plantation Project with 50,000 young plant scattered.

The Bulusan Volcano Natural Park anchors the native kinds of animals that reside there. Travelers should be aware of their waste in view of the fact that these classifications could unexpectedly consume it and perish. They can see some of the sheltered animals: the Potted Wood Kingfisher, Luzon Hornbill, South Luzon Cloud Rat, Philippine Warty Pig, Philippine Frogmouth, and Philippine Fairy Bluebird. There are also two flora classifications termed behind Bulusan that can be observed in the park – Pronephrium bulusantum, a type of fern, and Schefflera bulusanicum, an aquatic type of plant.

8. Rizal Beach – Sorsogon Tourist Spots

Rizal Beach in Gubat is one of a kind beach in Sorsogon that is in the middle of a cove. It’s one of the finest unspoiled coastlines in the Philippines, where a great number of gleaming shores border an immense shoreline.

It is a lengthy, wide coast located 5 km southern of Gubat. It is adjacent to the unsettled San Bernardino inlet hence the huge surfing waves that could excite swimmers and most especially the surfers. Others declare it is the greatest beach in Sorsogon and it is an absolute location for kayaking, swimming, and beach exploring.

Fronting the Pacific Ocean, this site isn’t as flourished as one might believe, which is even good in some way. While resorts have started in the surrounding (old Duana resort and new places like Vera Maris) where tourists and visitors can linger the night, the freshness of the place has been to some extent preserved.

9. Palogtoc Falls – Sorsogon Tourist Spots

It is an enjoyable, comfortable 20-minute walk down rolling hills covered with green grass, under a covering of tall coconut trees, as one walks off the Bulusan road down to the place. At the location, one perceives an artificial made of compressed earth swimming pool where the babbling water runs from just a few feet up the hillside.

It is literally just a mini-falls, but the fresh spring water is pleasant, energizing, and healthy. Accessible close to the side of the pool are picnic cottages.

Resident people majority of kids, leaping like playful pixies in the imaginary home atmosphere of Palogtoc Falls exhibit to me the actual pleasure of what the location can give apart from its natural charm.

10. Paguriran Island and Lagoon – Sorsogon Tourist Spots

Situated in Brgy. Sawangga in the urban area of Bacon, Paguriran Island, also familiar as Paguriran Beach, beckons backpackers who love beaches with their milky-sand seashore and crystal clear waters.

A tiny treasure of an isle is eased off in the hushed edges of Bacon, Sorsogon – the scenic Paguriran Island. Paguriran is a small collection of coral and a small island made of rock near the white sand coastlines of Sawanga in Bacon. It is reachable from the neighbouring beach by paddling along crystal clear waters, the deepness of which may span from ankle to waist depending on the tides. Enclosed on the island, coralline and granite sleep within a little depth lagoon that is absolute for swimming.

‘Paguriran Island’ is in reality not an island but is an assortment of rugged rocks formed like a volcano crater. This remarkable formation settles a lagoon nearby the sea wherein you can float around clear fresh waters. If you are courageous enough and have powerful walking shoes with you, climb your way up this small island and you’ll surely be honored with an astonishing atmospheric perspective of Paguriran and the nearshore of Bacon.

Coral prominence increases from the deep circle of the blue lagoon of Paguriran. The lagoon may be arrived at via a sand bar at low waters, but even at high waters, it may still be reached by walking if one is so decided, and travelling across the water up to the waist. The rocks, mainly protected in greenery that occasionally radiates a bright green colored tint to the differently cerulean blue of the lagoon, take as points from which the brave descent.

Sorsogon is the  southernmost province in Luzon . It’s located in the Bicol Region and this beautiful province is famous to local and foreign tourists because of its beaches. One of the popular Sorgoson tourist spots is the Pink Beach. In this blog post, we will talk about and share things to do in Sorsogon with all the details in our Sorsogon travel guide!

SORSOGON ITINERARY TRAVEL GUIDE

How to get to sorsogon – getting sorsogon by plane.

If you want to get from Manila to Sorsogon by plane. It will be the most comfortable way. You have to ride a plane to  Legazpi airport . Once in the airport get a tricycle to the Bus Terminal where you can get a bus or a van going to Sorsogon. There are buses and vans leaving every 15-30 minutes during the day. Prices are around  100 PHP .

GETTING SORSOGON BY BUS

If you want to get from Manila to Sorsogon by bus. There are daily buses leaving Manila from Edsa Cubao, Araneta Cubao, Alabang, Buendia and Pasay. Most of the buses are from 5 pm to 10 pm leaving from Manila.

The trip will take around 14 hours. And prices go from  800-1300 PHP  depending on the comfort of the bus. Regular buses can go as cheap as  800 PHP .

ATMS AND EXCHANGE CURRENCY IN SORSOGON

The currency in the Philippines is  Philippine Peso . You won’t also find it hard to find ATMs in Sorsogon City. There are a lot of establishments as well as banks in the town proper that has ATMs. Around the beaches we will recommend you to bring cash. Since you will not find ATMs in small towns and a few hotels they will only accept cash.

TRANSPORTATION AROUND SORSOGON

There are jeepneys to move around Sorsogon and buses. You have to pay attention to the schedule since there aren’t many jeepneys and buses at in the evening. Around the city you can move around tricycle expect to pay around  40-50 PHP  for 2 kilometers ride.

Prices are affordable for transportation around Sorsogon. For an hour and a half jeepney ride from Sorsogon to Matnog will cost  100 PHP . You can always move around buses going to Legazpi and Manila for short distances.

DAILY BUDGET TRAVEL IN SORSOGON ITINERARY

For the daily budget travel in accommodation in Sorsogon. There are a few rooms and B&Bs, Airbnb available all over Sorsogon that cost around  1000 PHP  per night. That’s just  $19 USD ! Most of the places are close to city center and Bus Terminal.

On the other hand, meals in local joints only cost  $2-3 USD  so eating here won’t burn a hole in your wallet, for sure. You might actually   $25 USD per day  if you’re traveling as a couple, like we were splitting costs in tours and the room. Finally, you can rent a motorbike for around  $8-10 USD . A cheaper option to get around is riding the local bus with rates depending on the distance.

SORSOGON TOURIST SPOTS AND THINGS TO DO IN SORSOGON

1.  donsol.

To top our list of Sorsogon Tourist Spots is Donsol. This place is famous because it is known as the home of  Butanding  or the Whale Sharks.

When you visit Donsol, you shouldn’t miss diving and swimming with the whale sharks. Don’t worry because they are friendly creatures. Just don’t do anything that will stress or scare them.

2.  LAKE BULUSAN

Sometimes referred to as “Switzerland of the Orient” , Bulusan Lake is a natural beauty. The vibrant lake backgrounded by the lush forest is a great scenery to bask in. The lake is part of the 4th most active Volcano in the Philippines, Bulusan Volcano. No wonder it’s one of the famous Sorsogon tourist spots!

3.  SAINT JOSEPH PARISH OR BARCELONA CHURCH

Old churches often give amazing historical vibes. Saint Joseph Parish is built in 1874 using stones from the sea and were put together using a mixture of egg whites, lime and tuba. It is also the most well-preserved church in the province.

4.  TIKLING ISLAND

As a part of the tour Tikling Island is only 15 minutes boat ride from Matnog. It’s a private island. You will find pink sand and blue waters. The named of Tikling Island is because of the birds with this name there were on the island. We couldn’t visit at that time because of the last typhoon two weeks before.

5.  SUBIC BEACH

Subic Beach was our favorite in our Sorsogon Itinerary and it was worth it to spend the day. Blue and transparent water where you can do snorkeling. The white sand is inviting to spend your day. Before going to Subic Beach we pass by to the Caves which was part of the tour based in the Tourism Office.

It’s called Pink Beach! It’s a long beach where you can walk around, swim and even snorkeling. You have to bring your own snorkeling since there is not snorkeling for rent. You always have to be ready for snorkeling in the Philippines.

We enjoyed Subic Beach for ourselves nobody came into the beach. You can stay overnight there are a few cottages for rent. You can also rent a cottage to spend your day  500 PHP . There is no entrance fee in Subic Beach.

6.  CALINTAAN ISLAND IN MATNOG

Another one of our favorite Sorsogon tourist spots is Calintaan Cave, which we visited after Juag Lagoon. We only passed by there and we didn’t even stop to take a picture. We took while passing by with the boat before coming back to Subic Beach.

It wasn’t possible to stop because of the tide. Sadly, they didn’t give any information if it was allowed to stop there in other schedule during the day. From Calintaan Cave to Subic Beach takes a 10-minute boat ride.

7.  JUAG LAGOON

Our first stop in Matnog Island hopping during our trip here was Juag Lagoon where you can feed and swim with the fishes. On that day the rates for feeding the fishes was  200 PHP . Plus another  200 PHP  extra per adult for swimming in Juag Lagoon.

It takes 15 minutes to get there from the port. And from Juag Lagoon to the next stop Calitaan Caves or Subic Beach will take 10-15 minutes more by boat.

8.  PAGURIRAN ISLAND

Paguriran island is one of those best things to do in Sorsogon that are not yet commercialized in Sorsogon. Paguriran island entrance fee is only  20 PHP to 50 PHP . The island also has a lagoon that makes the place different from other beaches. Mayon Volcano’s majestic symmetry is also seen from far.

9.  BAGATAO ISLAND

The beach in Bagatao Island is a great place to swim, but the Bagatao Island’s lighthouse is much more of a spot to visit. The scene at the top is beautiful, full of Sorsogon’s vibrant trees and calm waters.

10.  LIBANON BEACH

Libanon Beach located in San Juan, Bacon is different from other beaches because of its rock formations and somehow dark hued sand. The sky is clearly seen from almost all angles, there are little to no buildings around. 

11.  DANCALAN BEACH (BULUSAN)

Dancalan Beach Resort did not fail to capture and retain the natural landscape and vibes of Sorsogon. The resort itself is exciting and uplifting. The food is also great. It is near the Whale Sharks Interaction Center, and Astillero of Donsol, Dancalan Beach.

12.  RIZAL BEACH, BAYUGIN FALLS

Rizal Beach may be your average beach, but it is still a place to go if you’re near. You’ll have your own space in the Beach because it is large. The sand is brownish gray and the water is clear.

13.  bayugin falls.

After a slippery walk for almost 20 minutes from the community center you’d definitely enjoy being one with nature. The place is surrounded by green forest and you can reward yourself by dipping yourself on the cold waters. 

14.  TOLONG GAPO BEACH

Tolong Gapo Beach is a very humble beach along Barangay Caricaran. You’ll often see families around the area swimming at the beach. As far as enjoying a public beach, Tolong Gapo will entertain you with its stories. 

15.  PALOGTOK FALLS

It is accessible by walking from Brgy. San Roque. The falls is really small, however, there is a natural pool that’s really great to swim into. Some parts of the pool may be relatively deep, so be wary.

16.  UBO FALLS

Ubo Falls is one of the Hidden gems in Sorsogon. The falls is hidden among the thick forest but is definitely worth looking for. You could also bring your own food, just remember to bring your trash and keep it to yourself until finding a trash can. 

17.  GUBAT SURFING

Try surfing in Buenavista Beach in Gubat Sorsogon. The place isn’t fully developed yet that’s why the place is a charm. The accomodation around the are well ventilated nipa huts. If you want to learn about surfing, you can learn it here for only  350 PHP . 

18.  PILAR

Pilar is a neighboring town of Donsol. It’s also a good spot to look for white sharks while enjoying it’s clear blue waters. 

19.  MALAWMAWAN ISLAND

The entrance fee is free, and the boat ride for a round trip costs only  500 PHP . Almost everywhere you look at will be clear blue waters and sky. Electricity and cell phone signal might be a problem. Also, if you’re a fan of pitching tents beside the beach, you can do so. 

20.  IROSIN HOT SPRINGS

Irosin Hot Springs is near Bulusan Volcano. It is inside a resort called Nature Hot Spring Resort in Monbon, Irosin, Sorsogon. It is only a 45 minute drive from Sorsogon City. 

21.  OLANGO BEACH

Olango Beach is a small and humble resort that’s truly relaxing. It is located in Santa Magdalena, Sorsogon. Many families and groups of friends go here to have a picnic beside the beach. One of the most beautiful Sorsogon tourist spots.

22.  PAROLA BEACH (MAGALLANES)

To go here, take a jeepney or a tricycle from Brgy. Bacalon in Magallanes.  Boat rentals from the pier to Parola Beach costs for about  1200-1500 PHP . Parola Beach is also in Bagatao Island.

23.  PANUMBAGAN SANDBAR

It’s becoming more of a tourist spot now as Pilar is also becoming known. You could eat here the delicious Uni (urchins) and sea grapes right from the waters. You could also snorkel around the area. 

24.  TUTIN BEACH

Located in Brgy. San Ramon, Tutin beach is also a gem loved by locals. The scenic meeting of the clear wavy water and cloudy sky makes most of the view. 

25.  SABANG BEACH

Sabang Beach is a good place to ease yourself after a tiring day. It’s better to just sit around and feel the sea breeze hug you. It’s better to have a picnic to enjoy the view. The last of the Sorsogon tourist spots in this list.

WHERE TO STAY IN SORSOGON

If you are looking for places where to stay in the Sorsogon area. Prices start from 1000 PHP if you are going on a budget. For more comfortable places to stay at, places are starting from  1500-3000 PHP  for a room for two people with breakfast. However, prices may vary as the facilities increase.

Recidencia Del Hamor has an outdoor swimming pool, garden, a shared lounge and terrace, and  restaurant. They also have a bicycle rental service. It’s fun to hop in on bicycles and drive around in the morning. Their Duplex Villa with a queen bed, private bathroom, Flat TV, with air condition costs about  5000 PHP  per night. Outside the Villa, you also have an amazing view of the mountains. The staff is really well loved by guests.

Siama Hotel is arguably the best hotel around Sorsogon, and that’s for a good reason. The value of the place is really top notch. How to get to Gubat, Sorsogon

• Buses from Metro Manila have direct trips to Sorsogon, travel time is about 12-13 hours. Alternatively, if coming in via air through Legazpi City Airport, take a bus or van going to Sorsogon City. From Sorsogon City, take a jeepney bound for Gubat. Travel time is 30-45 minutes, fare is around 25 pesos.
