The Best Things to do in New Haven, CT

1. take a tour of the historic yale university.

The Ivy League institution is a stalwart of New Haven, Connecticut.

Yale University traces its  roots back to the 1640s  when colonial clergymen established a school in the European tradition.

It was formally named Yale College in 1718 for a Welsh merchant and benefactor of the school, Elihu Yale.

It’s the third-oldest university in the United States, behind only Harvard University and the College of William and Mary .

Throughout its history, it has been a place of incredible academic study, achievements, and has produced numerous notable alumni.

Although you can choose to wander the campus at your leisure, guests can also opt to take a free tour of the historic campus , led by current students.

The tour leaves from the  Visitor Center daily , just across from the New Haven Town Green.

The campus architecture is beautiful, and it’s a pretty fantastic walk through the storied academic grounds.

2. Explore prehistoric fossils at the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History

Looking for things to do in New Haven about dinosaur history?

The Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale University is a great place to spend your time.

Founded in 1866, today, the museum has several world-renown permanent collections.

The most well-known is in The Great Hall of Dinosaurs. It features many skeletons, including a mounted Brontosaurus skeleton and The Age of Reptiles mural by artist Rudolph Zallinger.

The museum offers tours of various exhibits included with your admission ticket on Saturdays and Sundays.

3. Marvel at the rare works found at Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library

This is one of those libraries known for being a book lover’s paradise.

Yale University’s Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library is one of the largest collections of rare books and manuscripts in the world, with more than one million total volumes.

Since its opening in 1963, the library has grown to contain some of the very first copies of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, John James Audubon’s Birds of America, and Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

The building itself has no windows; instead, opaque panes made of Vermont marble act as windows.

Sunlight filters through them to reach inside, which prevents the rare papers from damage.

While you have to be a researcher or Yale member to access the prints themselves, there are several special exhibitions available to visitors for public viewing, like the University library’s first books dating back to 1742, or the Gutenberg Bible.

4. Explore the Yale Collection of Musical Instruments

Established in 1900, the Yale Collection of Musical Instruments is a fascinating museum within the Yale University system.

Part of the Yale School of Music, the museum is home to musical instruments spanning more than three centuries.

Famous instruments on display include a 1742 organ from John Snetzler, a 1784 clavichord from Hoffman, and pianos from Könnicke dating back to 1795.

The museum actually hosts a historically accurate concert each year, using instruments from their collection.

You can visit their permanent and temporary exhibits during their admission hours; however, the museum is currently closed for renovations.

5. Explore the galleries at the Yale Center for British Art

The Yale Center for British Art , which holds the most extensive collection of British art outside of the United Kingdom, should not be missed.

Its enormous collection includes thousands of works by artists dating from the 1400s to the present day, ranging from paintings, sculptures, and pictures to scholarly volumes on the rich history of British art.

Among its permanent exhibitions are some works by Americans who lived in Britain throughout this period.

While alumnus Paul Mellon gifted the permanent collection to Yale in 1966, the sustainable structure that houses the University art museum was designed and erected by Louis I. Kahn in 1977, directly across the street from the Yale University Art Gallery.

The Center offers free admission, public tours of the works, special exhibitions, and architecture, as well as a research program consisting of lectures, conferences, and workshops.

They also offer an app you can use inside the museum or at home and act as a guide to its artworks.

6. See the Yale University Art Gallery

On the other side of Chapel Street, across from the Yale Center for British Art, the Yale University Art Gallery preserves more than 300,000 pieces in its collection to protect and showcase all different forms of artwork from any time period.

Since its founding in 1832, it’s known as the oldest university art museum in the United States. You can visit its collection for free and participate in any of its programs.

Both museums also provide an app that can be used at the museum or at home as a guide to their artworks.

7. Find your new favorite book at the Atticus Bookstore Café

Just as the name implies, you can find both great food and your new favorite novel all without leaving the Atticus Bookstore Café !

The original location opened in 1975 on the first floor of the Yale British Art Museum.

You’ll find a selection of classic, new releases and staff picks to peruse, as well as their excellent food and bakery goods.

Along with the original cafe, they’ve since expanded to include the Atticus Market in the East Rock neighborhood of New Haven.

8. Cheer on the Bulldogs at a Yale University football game

If you’re looking for some of the best things to do around Yale University, you can’t miss an opportunity to cheer on the Bulldogs!

Every fall season, the Yale football team plays at the Yale Bowl, right around the corner from the Yale campus.

Spend your crisp autumn day tailgating before the game starts, and then head inside the stadium to watch the game.

You can purchase tickets for their games on their website.

Fun Fact : Due to stadium renovations, the Giants NFL football team used the Yale Bowl as their home facility for twelve games from 1973 to 1974.

9. Wander through The Shops at Yale

Right around the corner from the Yale University campus, you’ll find The Shops at Yale .

This high-end outdoor shopping center offers an eclectic mix of more than sixty popular brands and local retailers.

They also have everything from quick bites and snacks to excellent, sit-down restaurants.

Spend some time popping between the different shops and boutiques and stopping into the various restaurants for meals and snacks when you need a shopping break.

10. Pay your respects at the Grove Street Cemetery

Adjacent to the Yale campus, Grove Street Cemetery is the final resting place of some of New Haven’s most important former residents, including Connecticut inventor Eli Whitney, who invented the cotton gin.

It was established in the 1790s as the first charted burial ground in the country after the former cemetery on the New Haven Town Green became overcrowded.

Notable features include the entrance gate to the cemetery, which is considered one of the best examples of Egyptian Revival architecture.

It’s a quiet, historic place, full of some truly incredible monuments. 

11. Walk around the Town Green

A square park encompassing five of New Haven’s most central streets–Chapel Street, Temple Street, College Street, Church Street, and Elm Street–the New Haven Town Green is one of the most important things to do in downtown New Haven.

It was first established in the 1640s as a Puritan marketplace.

Throughout its history, General George Washington spoke on the grounds during the American Revolutionary War, and Abraham Lincoln gave one of his presidential campaign speeches here.

Today, the picturesque 16-acre park is a must-visit for any New Haven sightseeing. At the city’s heart, it features three historic churches and the New Haven Town Hall along its sides.

The Green is a great place to add to your New Haven itinerary for a stroll or a picnic, especially during the warmer months, or to attend outdoor concerts, fairs, festivals, and other community events.

12. Spend a day at the various New Haven Colleges and Universities

Although Yale University is the most historical of the higher education institutes in New Haven, there are many other colleges in town.

The University of New Haven , Albertus Magnus College , and Gateway Community College all call the city of New Haven home. 

13. Try the It Adventure Ropes Course at Jordan’s Furniture

This is one of the most exciting things to do in New Haven, Connecticut.

It’s something you’ll need to see to believe! Housed in the former New Haven Register newspaper’s building, Jordan’s Furniture is a chain of furniture stores in New England.

Within each of their stores, they house different attractions.

Their New Haven, Connecticut location houses It Adventure Indoor Ropes Course, which boasts the largest indoor high ropes course in the world.

It’s incredible!

With two ropes courses and a bunch of different adventure indoor activities in New Haven , including climbing walls and zip lines, it’s undoubtedly an exhilarating experience. 

14. Walk along the coast at Pardee Seawall Park

This 1.3-mile park is located right next to the coastline and offers beautiful Long Island Sound views.

Walk, bike, or relax on benches, conveniently located along its path.

It’s one of the best things to do in New Haven, Connecticut on a beautiful, leisurely day.

15. Enjoy the view from Lighthouse Point Park

Situated on Long Island Sound, the park is built on the site of a Revolutionary War battle. 

This shoreline park is a beautiful area to add to your New Haven itinerary.

There are two main features of Lighthouse Point Park.

First, the Five Mile Point Lighthouse, originally built in 1805 and decommissioned in 1877, was added to the National Registry of Historic Landmarks in 1990. 

Secondly, the antique Lighthouse Point Carousel was built in 1916 in the folk art style.

After closing in the 1970s due to weather damage, the City of New Haven restored the antique Carousel a decade later and it became listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

It has 72 restored mounts on a 60-foot platform and is decorated with paintings that represent New Haven.

And, starting in mid-November through the end of the year, Lighthouse Point Park hosts one of Connecticut’s beautiful fall festivals , the Fantasy of Lights.

16. Hike the trails or stop and smell the roses at East Rock Park

East Rock Park  is one of the most popular things to do in New Haven because of its beautiful location and varied landscape of forests, cliffs, and rocky boulders.

It’s a quick drive from most surrounding towns in Connecticut and a quick drive just north of downtown New Haven.

With more than 10 miles of trails and a variety of interesting outdoor activities available to visitors–from rock climbing to sledding and ice skating in the winter–there is something here for everyone.

Throughout the spring and summer months, you can find more than 50 varieties of roses in full bloom at the Pardee Rose Gardens inside the restored Pardee Greenhouse.

However, many people choose to come to this park for its hiking.

For an excellent vantage point of the surrounding towns, hike to the Summit, at the top of East Rock Park, and you’ll find one of the best views in the state.

With a 360-degree panorama of the Connecticut River and Long Island Sound, you’ll be able to see for miles. 

It’s one of the best things to do in New Haven in the fall !

17. Try authentic Italian-American “apizza” in Little Italy

New Haven, Connecticut, is full of incredible food influenced by the Italian-American population that calls this area home.

They even have their own style of pizza, repeatedly ranked as the top in the United States.

Honestly, pizza is already pretty perfect. However, there is a pizza style known to the small state of Connecticut that is truly the best around.

The Apizza style was created by immigrants coming to New Haven, Connecticut, from around Naples, Italy, at the turn of the 20th century.

It’s a thin-crust, coal-fired pizza, most similar to New York style.

But, it’s differentiated from its neighboring technique by its chewiness, shape, and toppings.

There are now several restaurants in New Haven, Connecticut that serve the style, like Sally’s , Modern , and BAR (this particular dance club and brewery has originated its own flair on the apizza style.)

However, Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana originated the pie and is still widely considered the best.

Pepe’s signature Apizza is their white clam pizza with fresh littleneck clams on top of a white pizza. I promise it’s delicious.

While the Apizza style has spread throughout Connecticut and to nearby New York’s Westchester County, you need to add this to your New Haven itinerary and try it for yourself.

On any given day, Apizza places have lines out the door, with locals and tourists alike vying for their spot at one of the storied booths to enjoy a fantastic pie.

18. Experience true fine dining at the Union League Cafe

Ready to wow with fine dining?

The Union League Cafe is a premier French brasserie which combines fine cuisine with an unpressured atmosphere across the street from Yale University.

Although the food is French, the restaurant itself is completely connected to the history of New Haven.

The restaurant is housed in the Beaux-Arts building designed by New Haven architect Richard Williams, on the site of Roger Sherman’s homestead, New Haven’s first mayor and a signer of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Articles of Confederation.

This is a perfect place to celebrate a milestone, spend a romantic evening out in the city, or have an upscale night in town.

19. Eat at one of New Haven’s other great restaurants

Since Italian influence is strong in New Haven, fantastic Italian restaurants include Consiglio’s Restaurant , Basta Trattoria , and Olives and Oil Wine + Cucina .

And if you’re looking for a fancier date night in New Haven dining out, Tre Scalini is one of the best choices.

If Italian food isn’t your favorite, New Haven also has a variety of other great styles.

Bella’s Cafe is my favorite spot for brunch.

Shell & Bones Oyster Bar and Grill has phenomenal seafood, right on the water.

20. Head to Louis’ Lunch to try the first hamburger

Are you interested in an original?

According to the Library of Congress, Louis’ Lunch is a true New Haven hidden gem .

The restaurant opened in 1895 and is recognized for originating the modern-day hamburger. 

21. Take in the view from a rooftop bar

Want a drink with a view? New Haven has three beautiful rooftop bars you need to check out!

High George is the name of its beautiful rooftop lounge on top of The Blake Hotel.

Only open on Friday and Saturday nights, they even have a retractable roof for you to enjoy the space all year long.

At Elm City Social , you’ll feel the roaring ’20s vibe from the moment you step through the front door.

The cocktail bar and restaurant is serving up on its inside and rooftop spaces right around the corner from the Shubert Theater and the New Haven Green.

And, of course, you’re sure to have a great night out at 116 Crown , one of Connecticut’s top cocktail bars.

With a signature menu of avant-garde cocktails and awesome food, you’re sure to have a fun evening here. And those truffle fries–they’re a must!

22. Enjoy Italian pastries and other desserts

Bakeries, gelato, and coffee shops abound in the college town.

There are at least seven  coffee shops  within walking distance of the Yale University campus.

Donut Crazy is known for its wacky donut flavors.

Libby’s Italian Pastry Shop is a staple mom-and-pop bakery.

Katalina’s Kupcakes is home to rich, decadent cupcakes.

Doughilicious has jumped onto the edible cookie dough trend.

Even a favorite New York City cookie shop Insomnia Cookies has now made its way to New Haven.

23. Catch a performance at one of New Haven’s award-winning theaters

There are three world-class theaters in New Haven – the Shubert, the Long Wharf, and Yale Rep.

Shubert Theater

Opened by the turn of the 20th Century theatre moguls, the Shubert brothers, the Shubert Theater in New Haven, Connecticut, was originally a testing ground for new shows before they opened on Broadway.

To date, more than 300 productions have opened at the Shubert before making their Broadway debuts, including Oklahoma!, The Sound of Music, and My Fair Lady. 

Today, the Shubert hosts several different projects throughout the year, including Broadway “out-of-town” tryouts and national tours, ballets, and concerts.

If you happen to be in town on the first Thursday or Saturday of the month looking for unique things to do in New Haven, the  theater offers a free tour  to the public at 11 a.m.

Long Wharf Theater

In 1965, a new performance space, using borrowed movie theater seats, opened in a vacant warehouse on New Haven’s harbor.

Today, it’s known as the Long Wharf Theater.

Showing six plays per season operating in its two performance spaces, the theater was also the recipient of an honorary Tony Award, New York City theatre’s highest honor, in 1978 for its Excellence in Regional Theatre. 

Yale Repertory Theater

Yale University has one of the highest-regarded theatre programs in the country – it only makes sense they would have phenomenal performances.

Yale Rep is Yale School of Drama’s professional-in-residence company and has also won a Tony Award for Excellence in Regional Theatre.

They’ve had seventeen productions transferred to Broadway, and boast more than 100 premieres since opening in 1966.

24. Attend an ancient Compline mass at Christ Church

At Christ Church near the Shops at Yale, you can experience a true Compline mass every Sunday night during the university terms.

Starting at 9 p.m., the Christ Church choir sings the ancient hymns from a hidden location in the church, while the whole interior is illuminated by candlelight.

Compline – also known as Complin, Night Prayer, or the Prayers at the End of the Day, is the final church service (or office) of the day in the Christian tradition of canonical hours, which are prayed at fixed prayer times…In Western Christianity, Compline tends to be a contemplative office that emphasizes spiritual peace. 25. Play your day away at Elm City Games

Elm City Games is an amazing game shop the library, which is home to more than 1,500 games. 

Here, you can sit down to play all kinds of tabletop board games, card games, and dice matches.

It’s only $10 for a day pass, including access to any games in their shop.

You’re bound to find far more options than standard classics like Monopoly, Sorry, or Chutes and Ladders, and you have the opportunity to buy any game in the store.

26. Play a round at Barcade in New Haven

“The Original Arcade Bar” started in 2004 in Brooklyn, New York City combining American craft beer with classic arcade games for a truly unique gaming experience.

The facility is constructed in an arcade-style, so there are many exciting activities and classic games to enjoy. Each site contains around 40 games ranging from the mid-1970s to the early 2000s.

Along with New Haven , they also have locations in Manhattan, Jersey City, and six locations around the United States.

Spend a few hours of your night out here, trying different beers and daring a friend to match your highest score.

27. Catch a concert at the Westville Bowl or College Street Music Hall

Concert lovers will love New Haven. There are several concert venues in New Haven, but three stand out above the rest.

Across the street from the city’s famous Yale Bowl, you’ll find the Westville Bowl .

However, instead of football, this stadium caters to concerts and comics.

The venue is open to all ages (unless a performance specifically states otherwise) and has accessible seating.

On their website, you can find out about upcoming performances at the Westville Bowl, purchase tickets, and learn more about their parking situation.

Catching concert performances at College Street Music Hall is another one of the best things to do in New Haven at night.

This live music venue is a restored 1926 theater that now hosts at least one concert every week. Find their upcoming concert schedule here .

28. Head to Toad’s Place for live music

Toad’s Place has been a popular music venue and nightclub in New Haven, Connecticut, for decades–my father still rocks his vintage Toad’s Place t-shirts from when he regularly caught concerts here in college!

Check out their website to see what type of show you might enjoy most, and purchase tickets through their box office in person, over the phone, or online.

29. Attend a New Haven Symphony Orchestra performance

The New Haven Symphony Orchestra has been filling New Haven’s performance halls with magnificent music for nearly 120 years.

Morris Steinert, a German immigrant, was urged to organize an orchestra with other amateur musicians around the start of the twentieth century. Since then, the NHSO has been flooding the city with music.

Fun Fact : The New Haven Symphony Orchestra is the fourth-oldest orchestra in the United States.

Depending on your musical tastes, the Symphony offers a classics series, a pops series, and family and special events throughout the season.

Most of their concerts occur within the Lyman Center for the Performing Arts in New Haven. However, their calendar includes appearances in locations around New Haven County.

30. Immerse yourself in an Escape Room

31. Sleep inside a Brutalist building designed by Marcel Breuer

Affectionately known to locals as the “Pirelli Building,” world-renown modernist architect Marcel Breuer designed the building in the Brutalist architectural style in the 1970s.

However, after sitting empty for more than 20 years, sharing a parking lot with the city’s Ikea, Hilton has transformed the local landmark into the latest edition of its Tapestry Collection.

Now called the Hotel Marcel New Haven, Tapestry Collection by Hilton , it offers 165 guest rooms, is fully sustainable, pet-friendly, and offers amenities like a fitness center, a boutique, and parking on-site.

And, it’s within view of two of the other awesome things to do in New Haven–the Long Wharf Theater and the It Adventure Ropes Course at Jordan’s Furniture.

33. Learn about the Industrial Revolution at the Eli Whitney Museum

The Eli Whitney Museum , located just over the border on the Hamden side of New Haven, honors the life of American inventor Eli Whitney.

Born in 1765, Whitney created the cotton gin during the Industrial Revolution.

This device, which separated cotton seeds from cotton fibers, significantly accelerated the process and is regarded as one of the most significant designs of the time.

You may explore numerous historic locations and exhibits on the campus of the Eli Whitney Museum and Workshop, as well as try out their children’s and adult education courses.

Their walk-in programs are only accessible on weekends.

34. Check out the PEZ Visitor’s Center

PEZ was invented in Vienna, Austria, in the 1920s as an alternative to smoking. It has become one of the most famous candies, with its hundreds of dispensers becoming highly sought-after collector’s pieces.

Fun Fact : PEZ is named after pfefferminz, the German word for peppermint. The first letter P, the middle letter E, and the last letter Z.

The PEZ Visitor Center is located just a short drive from New Haven in Orange, Connecticut.

Spend the day learning more about the company’s history, seeing renowned PEZ dispensers from the past, and watching the production facilities prepare and package the tablets and tubes.

35. Unlock your creativity as a paint and sip class

At Muse Paintbar , anyone can unlock their creativity.

Just a ten minute drive from downtown New Haven, head over to the Post Mall in Milford to spend a few hours lost in the art of painting.

When you head to their website, you can peruse the class times and what painting will be taught during that period. Once you decide, you can book online and show up at the start!

They provide all of the paints, brushes, and canvas you’ll need to create your masterpiece, and you can buy small bites and drinks from their menu to accompany your painting time.

Since opening in 2012, Muse Paintbar has expanded across the eastern seaboard, with locations all over New England and even as far south as Virginia.

How to Get to New Haven, CT

Trains will be your most convenient public transportation option to get to New Haven, especially if you’re coming from New York City .

Otherwise, adding a stop in for your New Haven itinerary is a great choice for your New England road trip, due to its connections.

New Haven is just off I-91 and I-95 and can be easily accessed by car.

Unless you’re spending all your time in downtown New Haven, many of the places on this list you’ll need to drive to reach.

Plan to rent a car or think about rideshare. Major companies like Uber and Lyft both operate in New Haven.

If you’re coming up from New York City, the Metro-North New Haven train line is your choice.

New Haven line trains leave Manhattan from Grand Central Terminal or Harlem-125th St, and it takes a little over 2 hours to arrive at the last stop.

However, Amtrak trains also stop at Union Station in New Haven, so you have even more train options. 

Where to Stay in New Haven, CT

Since I grew up right outside New Haven, I’ve never stayed in a hotel while visiting the city. However, there are several quality hotels and apartment-style stays that are close to the city center and the Yale University campus.

• Budget hotel – Just steps from the Shops at Yale, the Courtyard New Haven at Yale ( Booking | Hotels ) is a great standard option in town. Equipped with conventional Marriott accommodation and conveniences, this hotel also has an outdoor terrace, an on-site bar, and a fireplace in the lobby.
• Luxury hotel – The Blake Hotel ( Booking | Hotels ) is a trendy hotel that blends modern design with classic architecture. Located in the heart of downtown, the hotel has a beautiful rooftop patio with a cocktail bar and lounge and a few other restaurants. Choose from standard rooms to suites with sitting areas and kitchens and use their on-site gym.
• Apartment stays – If you’re looking for a true home-away-from-home experience, check out the New Haven Village Suites ( Booking | Hotels .) This pet-friendly apartment-style hotel offers studio suites, two-bedroom suites, and ADA-compliant suites, with full kitchens in every block. Mystic, Connecticut

On the Connecticut shoreline over by Rhode Island, you’ll find the beautiful seaport city of Mystic.

The town has been a hub for the ship-making industry since the 1700s, and has transformed into a quintessential New England coastal town.

New York City

You can easily add a day trip to New York City into your New Haven itinerary.

Head to Union Station and take a Metro-North train headed south into Grand Central Terminal.

Less than a two-hour drive north into upstate New York you’ll find Poughkeepsie.

Sample 3-Day New Haven Itinerary

Today is a Yale day! Breakfast at one of the coffee shops within walking distance from the campus. Then, head to the Yale University campus for a tour of the grounds.

After, you can spend the afternoon wandering through the Yale University Art Gallery. Head to dinner at Tre Scalini or Consiglio’s before your show at one of the three historic New Haven theaters.

Today is all about the apizza. While Pepe’s is my favorite, you can choose any of the famous apizza places on Franklin Street for a pie or two.

Then, walk over to Libby’s Italian Pastry Shop for dessert before heading to Pardee Seawall Park and Lighthouse Point Park for a beautiful walk by the water.

Finally, head over to BAR for dinner to try out the apizza style with flair.

Today is for the adventurous things to do in New Haven, Connecticut. If you’ve always wanted to visit New York City, this would be your day to train in and explore.

Otherwise, head to the Peabody Museum to observe the world-class paleontology collections.

Lunch at Atticus Bookstore & Cafe before spending your afternoon at It Adventure Ropes Course at Jordan’s Furniture to test your skills on the high ropes.

Tours for general visitors.

Yale College students provide a glimpse into the history and architecture of the university. The tours start at the Yale Visitor Center at 149 Elm Street . Hear about Yale’s rich 300-year history and aspects of student life at several of Yale’s fourteen residential colleges. The tour also includes the Gothic Sterling Memorial Library, Yale’s largest, and the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Constructed with more than one hundred panels of translucent marble, the Beinecke is home to one of the world’s preeminent collections of rare materials, including the Gutenberg Bible.

Tours last approximately one hour. Note that there are many Elm Streets in the region. The exact address is 149 Elm Street New Haven, CT 06511. Please check you are using the correct zip code 06511 .

Please note that the Visitor Center provides campus tours that are geared toward a broad audience of visitors. Undergraduate Admissions provides separate tours. If you are a prospective undergraduate student, you should consider attending an Undergraduate Admissions tour.

Parents taking the campus tour with children ages 6-11 can request a brochure that encourages the children to hunt for architectural details and designs.

Groups of 10 or more visiting the campus can arrange to have a private tour specifically suited to their time schedule. All private tour company groups, regardless of size, are required to schedule a private tour. For each group of up to 25 people, one student tour guide will be scheduled. There is a fee of $50 per guide. 

When requesting a tour, please provide the following information: time and date requested, organizer name, group name, phone number, email and number of guests. Although we will make every attempt to accommodate your request, a tour is not guaranteed until you receive official confirmation from our office.

The port of New Haven, at the mouth of the Quinnipiac River in eastern Connecticut, was founded by English Puritans in 1638, and has been famed since 1716 as the seat of Yale University. On the campus are several interesting attractions, among them the outstanding Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History. The campus includes many of the most popular places to visit in New Haven.

The many programs, concerts, and events at Yale also add to New Haven's vibrant arts scene, which includes a variety of theaters, a symphony, and a popular summertime jazz festival that adds to its appeal for tourists. In addition to sightseeing, explore the numerous parks and natural areas around the city; families will find plenty of things to do in East Rock Park and Lighthouse Point Park.

Yale University has a long history, which began to some extent in the 17th century, although the school was not actually in existence until the early 18th century. Visitors can take a tour of the campus and learn all about the institution and its buildings, some of which were designed by prominent architects, such as Eero Saarinen's revolutionary Ingalls Rink and his 1962 Morse and Ezra Stiles Colleges. Frank O. Gehry designed the Yale Psychiatric Institute in 1989. Older buildings on the campus are mainly in the Gothic Revival style.

Places to see on the university campus are the Peabody Museum, the Art Gallery, the Sterling Memorial Library, the Center for British Art, and the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, as well as several lesser-known collections, including one of rare musical instruments and another tracing advancements in brain research over the last century.

The visitors center has a video and historical displays; free student-led campus tours are offered each morning.

Yale University Art Gallery was established in 1832 and is the oldest university art museum in the United States. The extensive collections are especially strong in art from the ancient Mediterranean world, which includes more than 13,000 objects. African art comprises nearly 2,000 objects, and art from the ancient Americas about 1,500.

American painters and sculptors are represented by works of John Singleton Copley, Albert Bierstadt, Frederick Remington, Winslow Homer, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, George Bellows, John Singer Sargent, Edward Hopper, and Alexander Calder.

Other exhibits feature American decorative arts and furniture, especially pieces of New England origin. There are also changing exhibits from a huge selection of master prints, drawings, and photographs.

The Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale University features exhibits on biology, paleontology, botany, geology, and anthropology. Permanent attractions include the Great Hall of Dinosaurs , the Hall of Native American Cultures, Hall of Minerals, Hall of Mammalian Evolution, Earth and Space, and Birds of Connecticut.

Housing part of Yale's large Egyptology collection, the Daily Life in Ancient Egypt gallery includes a mummy and coffin, a granite Head of Osiris, and the black diorite Bust of a Ptolemaic King. In the Hall of Native American Cultures are more than 300 objects ranging from tools and clothing to pottery and baskets.

The dinosaurs and ancient Egyptian exhibits are great favorites with children, making a visit to the museum a popular thing to do for families.

The Yale Center for British Art displays British paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, photographs, and other pieces, from the Elizabethan period to the modern day, in the most comprehensive collection outside the United Kingdom.

You can see works here by Constable, Gainsborough, Hogarth, Joshua Reynolds, and Barbara Hepworth, in a collection that traces the development of British art and culture from the Elizabethan period to the present. In addition to works of art, the center has a collection of 30,000 volumes of rare books.

Also displayed are works by Whistler and Canaletto, neither of whom were British, but were active in Britain and painted British subjects.

More than 150 hands-on exhibits covering fields of science from butterflies to outer space fill the eye-catching building of the Connecticut Science Center. Designed to engage children of all ages, the exhibits encourage them to explore and discover the natural and physical world around them.

Science Alley, in the main atrium, showcases the breadth of scientific discovery, while an Engineering Lab shows how principles of engineering apply to solving real-world problems. Kids will find plenty of things to do, such as designing and testing a heli-flyer, experimenting with wind power, racing a robot, and mingling with butterflies in a tropical greenhouse.

Younger children have a space of their own, where they can experiment with moving water and build with big blocks and experiment with magnets.

Music lovers and theatergoers can find nirvana in New Haven almost any night of the week. Performing arts and concert venues join jazz dives and free outdoor programs in New Haven's busy year-round arts calendar.

The Shubert Theater opened in 1890, when the Shubert brothers extended their reach from New York and opened the grand theater in New Haven. It quickly became the prime venue for pre-Broadway openings and a testing ground for rising stars. More than 300 world premieres have opened here (including Oklahoma! and Sound of Music ). Along with stage productions, you can hear concerts from jazz to classical.

At the Long Wharf Theater , in a converted waterfront warehouse, you can see new works debut and classics reinterpreted. In its 50 years of performances, many have gone on to Broadway and national venues. Yale Repertory Theatre , performing in a former church, is a showcase for emerging playwrights.

The New Haven Symphony Orchestra began performing in 1895 and in 1901, Yale University commissioned Woolsey Hall as its venue, beginning a long association with the Yale School of Music. Later, the orchestra added children's concerts, pops concerts, and the Young People's Concerts.

The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan played at Toad's Place , and Firehouse 12 has turned a 1905 fire station into an intimate (it seats fewer than 100) jazz venue.

Holding one of the world's largest and richest collections of rare books and manuscripts, Beinecke Library includes ancient manuscripts, writings on papyrus, maps, the personal papers of writers, and archival materials.

There are early books printed in Japan, China, and Korea before 1800; books printed in America pre-1821; and newspapers and broadsides printed in the United States prior to 1851. Thousands of books and other historic printed material are added each year, and the collections are available through the Digital Library of more than a million images.

The library's best-known treasure is a Gutenberg Bible , the first Western book printed from movable type. It is permanently on display, along with John James Audubon's Birds of America and a collection of the earliest printed books in the West, from before 1500.

About 20 percent of New Haven is devoted to open or green space, and one of the favorite places to go on a nice day is East Rock Park. Covering 425 acres, it includes a 365-foot-high, 1.5-mile-long rock. From its top are sweeping views of Long Island Sound and New Haven. This is one of the most beautiful places to photograph in New Haven .

Inside the park , Pardee Rose Gardens display a continuing succession of blooming flowers through the entire growing season, but the peak is during June and July, when more than 50 varieties of roses are in full bloom, one of New England's finest rose displays. The Pardee Greenhouse is beautifully restored.

Also in the park are the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors Monument and Indian Head Peak, as well as playgrounds; picnic areas; and more than 10 miles of trails provide joggers, walkers, and cross-country skiers with plenty of things to do.

In the center of the city, The Green is an urban park covering 16 acres. Three historic churches dating from the early 1800s – Trinity, United, and Center Church on the Green – face Temple Street, inside the park. The Green, which is a National Historic Landmark, was part of the original Puritan colonists' layout for the city, and a cemetery of early graves is in the crypt beneath Center Church.

Music on the Green , New Haven's outdoor summer concert series, brings top musicians to New Haven Green for evening concerts.

While not nearly the size of Boston's North End, New Haven's Little Italy is filled with traditions, most of which revolve around the legendary Frank Pepe Pizzaria Napoletana . Credited with having been the first to sell slices of thin-crusted pizza baked in a coal-fired oven, now known as New Haven-style pizza, Frank Pepe began business selling his "tomato pies" while walking through Wooster Square. In 1925, he opened what would become the city's most famous pizzeria.

He has competition in this Italian neighborhood, and many locals argue the merits of tomato pies sold by nearby Sally's Apizza , also on Wooster Street and founded in 1938. Two bakeries, Lucibello's Italian Pastry Shop and Libby's Italian Pastry Shop , founded in 1922, are other sites to look for in this characterful neighborhood.

The free Knights of Columbus Museum offers displays on the history of this fraternal order, which was founded in the basement of St. Mary's Church in New Haven in 1882. The distinctive modernist building, which celebrates its 50 th anniversary in 2020, was designed by architect Kevin Roche.

Changing exhibits relate to various historic and social themes, and each December and January, a special exhibit relating to Christmas often includes priceless crèche sets and figures, as well as the museum's own nativity scene, designed by Florentine artist Eugenio Pattarino.

Throughout the summer, the City of New Haven's Department of Arts, Culture & Tourism, Jazz Haven, and various music venues present a series of events celebrating the diversity of jazz music and culture in the city.

Various institutions, including the New Haven Museum, the Pardee-Morris House, the Creative Arts Workshop, and the Neighborhood Music School host concerts, several of which are free. Other programs and concerts are hosted by local music venues such as Café Nine and Café a Vin, as well as the regular weekend jazz brunch at the Elm City Market.

A beach on Long Island Sound, fishing pier, and a public boat launch make this a popular park with locals. Although the 1840 lighthouse is not open to the public, the surrounding park area is accessible, and picnic tables are scattered throughout tree-shaded grounds.

The lighthouse itself no longer functions, but the landmark structure adds a picturesque element to the shoreline. A playground for children and the Lighthouse Point Carousel , an antique carousel housed in a lovely historic building, make the park one of the city's most popular places to go for families.

Birders come here in the fall and spring to see the thousands of songbirds and birds of prey that stop here on their migratory route. Park rangers offer programs on migrations and ornithology.

Dedicated to the history of the city and surrounding area, New Haven Museum's vast collections are shown in four permanent galleries, plus changing themed exhibits. The fine arts collections include landscapes by local artists as well as other paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints.

The decorative arts are represented with furniture by local 17th- through 19th-century cabinetmakers, as well as silver, glass, textiles, and ceramics. Maritime pictures and artifacts relate New Haven's strong ties to the sea as a trading port and shipbuilding center, and the Technology and Manufacturing collections include an original model and full-size working version of Eli Whitney's cotton gin and one of the first Morse code receivers.

The first chartered burial ground in the United States, Grove Street Cemetery dates from 1796 and is also the first to be arranged in family lots and the first designed in a city plan with named avenues and cross streets.

The National Historic Landmark contains the graves of inventor Eli Whitney, dictionary author Noah Webster, and 14 presidents of Yale. The wall surrounding the cemetery was completed in 1845 with the construction of the imposing entrance gate, designed by architect Henry Austin in the Egyptian Revival style that was popular in the mid-19 th century.

The best place to stay in New Haven is downtown, near Yale University. The very compact city center is dominated by the Yale Campus, and many of the main tourist attractions, including the Peabody Museum and the Yale Art Gallery, are located on the university grounds. Pasta lovers unite on our Pasta Tour in the heart of New Haven’s Little Italy along Wooster Street! This indulgent walk takes guests to some of the best spots for pasta paired with wine and sweets to help it all go down smoothly. One of the best known Italian foods, pasta comes in myriad shapes and with a variety of sauces, and is best enjoyed with others!

The tour starts us at a fan favorite with Zeneli Pizzeria e Cucina Napoletana for the simple but savory Cacio e Pepe spaghetti paired with a smooth Campanian red wine. We then cross the road to Pasta Eataliana for the famous Paccheri alla Siciliana paired with a robust Tuscan red wine. To please your palate we visit the state’s oldest pastry shop, Libby’s, for some fresh Gelato and an espresso, followed by a walk around the block to digest and make more room. We finish our pasta adventure at the historic Consiglio’s Restaurant for delectable Cavatelli with marinara, home made Limoncello liquor and top it off with a slice of succulent Tiramisu! And at that we say “Basta!”

Asia Launches 2024 Summer Tour: Set List, Video

Asia played its first proper concert since 2019 on Wednesday evening (July 3) in Ridgefield, Connecticut. The performance launched the band’s summer tour and unveiled a new lineup who quickly revealed they were well-equipped for the task.

The British group’s eponymous 1982 debut , now over 40 years removed from its original release, figured heavily in the night’s set list with seven of its nine tracks getting feature time. It’s hardly surprising seeing as the album went to No. 1 on Billboard’s album charts, driven by the success of three major singles. Songs like the now-signature “ Heat of the Moment ,” plus “ Only Time Will Tell ” and “ Sole Survivor ” helped Asia sell more than four million copies.

But it caught the members themselves off guard at the time. “When we finished the album, none of us knew how successful it was going to be,” co-founder and keyboardist Geoff Downes told UCR prior to the tour start. “We all felt we’d made a good album, but you never know until you start getting played on every single radio station in America. All of the sudden, the album is flying up the charts.”

Who’s In Asia Now?

The current lineup of Asia was born out of the Extraordinary Life Memorial Concert , a 2023 tribute to late frontman John Wetton , who died in 2017 after a cancer battle. Vocalist Harry Whitley had the difficult task of stepping into Wetton’s position that day, something he handled admirably, according to Downes, who noted that “he really, really raised some eyebrows.” Guitarist John Mitchell worked with both Wetton and Downes in Icon and the John Wetton Band. Drummer Virgil Donati, well-known in the progressive rock circles, also has ties to Wetton, having been part of a successful reunion for ’70s prog rockers U.K. Original guitarist Steve Howe , still currently with Yes , has been out of the Asia mix since 2013, while drummer Carl Palmer was unavailable for the dates due to commitments with his Emerson, Lake and Palmer tribute.

While some fans pushed back regarding the legitimacy of the new lineup prior to the tour, Lisa Wetton, the singer’s widow, quickly released a statement of support . “John himself would have endorsed this tour, because he wanted the music to live on.”

As Downes relates, Whitley was the crucial missing piece. “The amazing thing was, when everyone started playing, it just sounded so alive. Harry is a dead ringer for John in many ways in terms of his vocal delivery and his general presentation,” he explained. He was a real find.”

“It seemed like a very, very nice way of paying tribute to John as much as anything else. You know, the idea that we could put together this team of musicians that would really do justice to Asia’s music,” he added. “John’s always in my mind. Obviously, I had a fantastic friendship and writing relationship with John. We broke down some walls with our writing. It was always a very inspirational day spent writing with John. I cherish those memories.”

The Heat of the Moment trek continues on Saturday in Medford, Massachusetts.

Goose Wraps Summer Tour With Tennis Stadium Blowouts In New York & New Haven [Photos/Videos/Audio]

After spending most of the month of June on the road checking off a number of its biggest venues to date, Connecticut quintet Goose returned home to the Tri-State Area on Saturday and Sunday for notable gigs at a pair of former tennis stadiums in New York ( Forest Hills Stadium , 6/29/24) and New Haven ( Westville Music Bowl , 6/30/24).

Following a Friday evening performance in Philadelphia featuring guest appearances by  Blind Melon ‘s  Rogers Stevens (on “No Rain”) and  Mt. Joy ‘s  Matt Quinn (on “California Magic”), Goose notched its largest ticketed crowd to date for the second night in a row on Saturday at Forest Hills Stadium, the former home of the U.S. Open which has found a lauded second act as a premier outdoor concert venue for the NYC market.

With the sellout at the 13,000-capacity stadium in picturesque Forest Hills, Queens, Goose—comprised of  Rick Mitarotonda (guitar, vocals),  Peter Anspach (keys, guitar, vocals),  Trevor Weekz (bass), Jeff Arevalo (percussion), and Cotter Ellis (drums)—took yet another step in its rapid ascent through the NYC venue ranks: In less than five years’ time, the band has worked its way from small New York clubs like the 250-cap  Mercury Lounge to larger rooms like  Terminal 5 (3000 capacity) and Radio City Music Hall (6,000 capacity) to selling out one of the city’s largest outdoor venues.

Goose took the stage as the grey cloud cover that had persisted all afternoon finally relented, allowing pockets of bright blues to beam out from behind tufts of white above and accenting the always surreal ambiance of a stadium tucked away in a quiet, quasi-suburban corner of the vast metropolis. After setting a lively tone with “Hot Tea”, “Lead Up”, “Turned Clouds”, and “Yeti”, the band called back to its first show of the year—an early-April test drive at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY —with a well-received rendition of “Hot Love & The Laze Poet”, the Vasudo deep cut that made its first Goose appearance that night at the Cap. A meditative cover of classic Prince -penned ballad “I Would Die 4 U” went on to tee up a “So Ready” set closer.

The band seemed to aim for big, sweeping sound and enveloping improvisation throughout the five-song second set as it moved through the  Autumn Crossing suite (“Travelers” > “Elmeg The Wise”) and into a steadily ballooning take on “Thatch”. The two-piece percussion section filled the stadium as the set came to a powerful close with “726” > “Dripfield”, both of which showcased the big, dreamy, enveloping rumble that has become a hallmark of the group’s sound. “Give It Time”, another recently reintroduced Vasudo tune, showed its promise as a future encore staple as the crowd clapped along in unison for one final New York number. The rain that had threatened all day to make an appearance finally began to fall just as the musicians took their final bows.

That precipitation in the area went on to push back the start time of the following evening’s show at New Haven’s Westville Music Bowl, the former site of the Pilot Pen tennis tournament-turned-Connecticut concert hotspot, but a wet forecast (i.e. “looks like rain today”) couldn’t dampen the band’s tour-closing CT homecoming (or, “oh, what a day to be living”). Unlike Forest Hills, a new landing spot for Goose, Westville has been a welcoming home to the band since launching in the aftermath of the pandemic, first as a socially-distanced venue and later as a scalable platform for the group’s growing popularity.

By the time an appropriate “The Empress of Organos” rang out through the stadium to close Sunday’s second set, the landmark weekend, and the milestone summer tour as a whole, the band had already offered up more than a handful of New Haven highlights including a particularly strong “Rockdale”  during set one and a lively “Pancakes” stacked around a cover of Moniker ‘s “Milestone 2 (Skux Life)” in set two. With time for one more, Goose borrowed a tune from Fatboy Slim , “Praise You”, for the evening’s encore. The local die-hards gathered in the audience roared their hearty approval in kind.

Following a break from touring during July and August, Goose will hit the road once again in early September to begin its 2024 fall tour with multi-night stints in Boston, MA (9/2–9/4), Saratoga Springs, NY (9/6–9/7), Chicago, IL (9/11–9/13), and Missoula, MT (9/19–9/20), a late-September jaunt through the Pacific Northwest and California, and more. New Haven Gang Member Admits Role in Murder

QUAYMAR SUGGS, 20, of New Haven, pleaded guilty yesterday before U.S. District Judge Victor A. Bolden in New Haven to a racketeering offense related to his participation in a violent New Haven street gang and the murder of an associate of a rival gang in May 2021.

Today’s announcement was made by Vanessa Roberts Avery, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut; John P. Doyle, Jr., State’s Attorney for the New Haven Judicial District; James Ferguson, Special Agent in Charge, ATF Boston Field Division; Robert Fuller, Special Agent in Charge of the New Haven Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation; Stephen Belleau, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration for New England; and New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson.

According to court documents and statements made in court, in an effort to address violence in New Haven, the ATF, FBI, DEA and New Haven Police Department, working closely with the U.S. Attorney’s Office and New Haven State’s Attorney’s Office, have been investigating a gang war between members and associates of the Exit 8 street gang and rival gangs in the Hill section and other areas of the city.  The Exit 8 gang is named after the geographic area accessed by exiting Interstate 91 at Exit 8 in New Haven.  Recently, younger members of Exit 8 are identifying themselves with the word “Honcho,” which is derived from the street name of an Exit 8 member who was murdered on Quinnipiac Avenue in February 2020.

The investigation revealed that Suggs and other members of the Exit 8 gang engaged in drug trafficking, used and shared firearms, and, since June 2018, have committed at least three murders and 16 attempted murders.  Exit 8 members and associates also stole vehicles, at times from outside of the state, and used those stolen vehicles when committing acts of violence.  Gang members also promoted, coordinated, facilitated, and celebrated their narcotics distribution and acts of violence through text messaging and the use of social media applications and websites including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube.

Suggs pleaded guilty to conspiracy to engage in a pattern of racketeering activity, including acts of violence, narcotics trafficking, and gun sales, and specifically admitted that, on May 19, 2021, he shot and killed an associate of a rival gang.  Suggs also admitted that in 2021, he and other Exit 8 members broke into a Connecticut state trooper’s car and stole the trooper’s duty bag.

At sentencing, which is not scheduled, Suggs faces a maximum term of imprisonment of life.

Suggs has been detained since March 24, 2023.

This investigation is being conducted by ATF, the FBI, the DEA, the New Haven Police Department, the Hamden Police Department, and the New Haven State’s Attorney’s Office, with the assistance of the Connecticut State Police and the Connecticut Forensic Science Laboratory.  The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Tara E. Levens, Rahul Kale and Jocelyn C. Kaoutzanis.

This prosecution is a part of the Justice’s Department’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), Project Longevity and Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) programs.

Supreme Court rejects challenge to Connecticut law that eliminated religious vaccination exemption

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a challenge to a 2021 Connecticut law that eliminated the state’s longstanding religious exemption from childhood immunization requirements for schools, colleges and day care facilities.

The justices did not comment in leaving in place a federal appeals court ruling that upheld the contentious law. A lower court judge had earlier dismissed the lawsuit challenging the law, which drew protests at the state Capitol.

Connecticut law requires students to receive certain immunizations before enrolling in school, allowing some medical exemptions. Prior to 2021, students also could seek religious exemptions. Lawmakers ended the religious exemption over concerns that an uptick in exemption requests was coupled with a decline in vaccination rates in some schools.

The change allowed current students in K-12 who already had a religious exemption to keep it.

“This is the end of the road to a challenge to Connecticut’s lifesaving and fully lawful vaccine requirements,” Democratic Attorney General William Tong said in a statement. “We have said all along, and the courts have affirmed, the legislature acted responsibly and well within its authority to protect the health of Connecticut families and to stop the spread of preventable disease.”

Brian Festa, vice president and co-founder for the group We The Patriots USA Inc., a lead plaintiff in the case, called the decision “disappointing” but said it’s “not the end of the road for us in our fight to win back religious exemptions for schoolchildren.”

The group — which has challenged other vaccination laws, including for COVID-19 — had argued along with several parents that Connecticut violated religious freedom protections by removing the exemption. The new law shows a hostility to religious believers and jeopardizes their rights to medical freedom and child rearing, they said in court papers.

Tong’s office said only one part of the case remains active. It involves a single plaintiff’s claim based on the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). While the office said it was confident the claim will be dismissed, Festa said federal law is clear that schools are required to provide “a free and appropriate education” for children with disabilities who have individual education plans, even if a child claims a religious exemption to vaccinations.

We The Patriots USA also has an ongoing federal lawsuit filed on behalf of a Christian preschool and daycare that’s challenging Connecticut’s vaccine mandate on constitutional grounds.

“It is our practice at We The Patriots USA to battle on many fronts simultaneously, and to never put all of our eggs in one basket,” Festa said, calling the Supreme Court’s decision on Monday “one setback, but far from a total defeat.”

Ellen DeGeneres Abruptly Cancels Comedy Tour Dates

Ellen DeGeneres has canceled several performances of her latest stand-up tour, Ellen's Last Stand... Up. 

The cancellations, set to affect shows this month and next in Dallas, San Francisco, Seattle, and Chicago, were announced on the Ticketmaster website .

While no specific reason for the cancellations has been provided, Ticketmaster conveyed a message stating, "Unfortunately, the Event Organizer has had to cancel your event." Ticket holders were assured they would receive refunds within 14 to 21 days. Tickets for other dates on the tour are still available for purchase.

ET has reached out to DeGeneres for comment.

DeGeneres launched her tour in June , returning to the stage after facing allegations of a toxic workplace environment on her talk show. The 66-year-old comedian opened up about her "cancellation" and discussed her return to the stage  -- and the public eye -- two years after she ended her daytime talk show after 19 seasons . An eyewitness in the audience said the former TV host chatted about her life these days and those "mean" allegations that she said derailed her career. 

"I got kicked out of show business because I'm 'mean'... You can't be mean in show business, they'll kick you out," she joked, adding that at one point, she read a headline that called her the "most hated person in America." Ever the comedian, DeGeneres quipped that while it didn't feel good to read front-page fodder like that, it was doubly awful because it's a title that holds no trophy or prize. 

She continued, stating that the fall from grace was made worse considering that she was once viewed as one of the most trusted people in the country and that fans and friends alike would often ask her to babysit their children. That doesn't happen anymore, she said, noting that it actually isn't the worst thing now that she is out of child-watching duty. 

DeGeneres -- who faced allegations back in 2020 of upholding a toxic workplace environment at The Ellen DeGeneres Show and being rude -- told the audience that while she is many things, she does not consider herself to be a "mean" person. She said that while the media firestorm was awful at the time, it has ultimately led her to a point of clarity and happiness in her life. It's also given her the ability to make jokes about the situation. 

Also in the audience was DeGeneres' wife of 16 years, Portia de Rossi , who the comedian said is her "best friend" and "soulmate." The comedian often looked to de Rossi for assurance throughout the show as she cracked joke after joke about their lives post-scandal. DeGeneres even joked that her first cancellation in Hollywood was when she came out on her TV sitcom, Ellen , in 1997. She also said she expects one more cancellation in a couple of years when she hits the age where Hollywood has no more use for women. 

A year after The Ellen DeGeneres Show came to an end, a source told ET about how the former host was keeping busy. "Ellen is not retired. She did not renew her show, but she has never not worked," the source said. "Although she has taken some time off from acting, she has a number of brands, an upcoming documentary as part of her Discovery deal, etcetera, that she is working on."

DeGeneres' current tour will be the basis for what will be her final Netflix stand-up special, six years after her last, Relatable , dropped on the streaming platform. 

In a pre-released statement about the tour and the special, DeGeneres said, "To answer the questions everyone is asking me -- yes, I'm going to talk about it. Yes this is my last special. Yes, Portia really is that pretty in real life."

DeGeneres is scheduled to resume her tour on July 8 in Denver.
