Tour Edge Hot Launch 523 woods: What you need to know

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Tour Edge’s Hot Launch 523 lineup of woods (two drivers, two fairway woods and two hybrids) again adopt many of the technologies first introduced by the company’s higher-end Exotics brand, but package them at more affordable prices. Those features target two levels of game-improvement with more traditional game-improvement shapes in the C523 line and more extreme, high-forgiveness shapes in the E523 line.

THE DEEP DIVE: Tour Edge’s Hot Launch lineup of game-improvement woods are nothing if now persistent in their approach to affordable forgiveness for average golfers. Fact is, this third-generation of the Hot Launch lineup ( following on the heels of the 521 models in 2021 and the 522 models in 2022 ) features technologies (like its distance-enhancing face thickness patterns or high-stability shaping and weighting) that got their start with the company’s higher-end Exotics clubs.

Just as importantly, though, the new Hot Launch 523 woods target the specific game-improvement needs of many average golfers: higher launch, lower spin, slice correction and better turf interaction to improve results on fat shots. The range includes two options, the standard game-enhancement C523 models and the extreme error-mitigation designs of the E523 versions.

“We continue to bring as much innovation to this line from our ultra-premium and tour-inspired Exotics lineup,” said David Glod, Tour Edge founder and president. “With Hot Launch, our goal is to bring as many performance benefits as we can to the budget-minded golfer, and to add in the custom fitting element that matches the unprecedented demand the marketplace is experiencing for game-improvement clubs.”

Tour Edge’s solutions to average golfer problems may seem simple (define problems, offer direct solutions), but they are not simplistic. The higher-priced Exotics lineup of clubs originally featured face thicknesses variably dotted with rows of diamond-shaped depressions . They were aimed to help accentuate both on- and off-center ball speed, and that technology finds itself now a key part of the solution for the entire Hot Launch 523 wood family, starting with the C523 and E523 drivers, which are four-piece, all-titanium designs.

Both models feature faces with 39 cross-hatched diamond-shaped indentations for better flexing across the face. Also designed to enhance ball speed is ridge on the crown stretching from front to back. Originally part of the Exotics 722 drivers from last year, that feature aims to provide structural support to the overall frame of the driver, said Matt Neeley, vice president of product development for Tour Edge.

“We found that this ridgeback going down the center was kind of able to act a little bit like a corrugated structure where it really helps strengthen up that area,” Neeley said. “We found that it also was a massive help as far as sound goes, too, a nice stiffening for the crown to kind of help damp out some of those sound vibrations. That was probably one of our biggest improvements this year.”

Also working to enhance speed is a depression in the front part of the sole on both the C523 and E523 drivers, called the “Power Channel.” Just a few thousandths of an inch deep, Neely said it provides an assist to the way the face can flex for more ball speed.

“We found it to work similar to the way Ridgeback works on the crown,” he said. “It gives us that corrugated effect, almost like the way a car has crumple zones, allowing the face to deflect a little bit more by getting that area to kind of fold inwards.”

As throughout the series of woods, the E523 driver offers the most game improvement. That starts with a focus on a high moment of inertia for stability on off-center hits and includes the draw-biased benefits of a weight pad deep in the rear of the sole. That feature, called the Houdini Sole, helps the driver achieve the highest moment of inertia of any driver in the company’s lineup while also keeping the center of gravity low. Even the more traditionally-shaped C523 driver uses a weight pad in the sole to push its moment of inertia over 5,000 grams-centimeters squared.

Again, the E523 driver features a stock shaft length that’s an inch shorter than most drivers on the market to give that struggling player a little more control. The drivers also feature a 360-degree wraparound cup face construction for improved flexing.

Many of those distance-enhancing features crop up in the E523 and C523 fairway woods, including the variable face thickness pattern of diamond-shaped depressions. The E523 features extra weighting in the heel to counteract a slice, while the raised area of the rear part of the sole (the “Houdini sole”) aims to improve turf interaction by reducing ground contact area. The E523 uses a more confidence-inspiring shallow face design, with more offset, Neeley said.

“Everything on this design is there to help somebody get the ball going straight up in the air and not too far to the right, with a little bit of closed face and a little more draw bias,” he said.

The C523 fairway wood uses a sole rail that runs from front to back to help lower the center of gravity for a more effective launch.

Many of those fairway wood features and distinctions carry over to the hybrids, including the sole rail and the deeper face, more compact shape on the C523 and the larger, heel-biased, shallow-faced design on the E523.

The Hot Launch 523 woods come in an extensive collection of 23 lofts between drivers, fairway woods and hybrids. The C523 (9.5, 10.5, 12 degrees) and E523 (10.5, 12, 15 degrees) drivers come in three lofts each ($270). The C523 fairway woods are available in lofts of 15, 17, 19 and 22 degrees, while the E523 fairway woods come in lofts of 16, 20, 23, 25 and 27 degrees ($170). The C523 and E523 hybrids ($150) are available in lofts of 19, 22, 25 and 28 degrees.

Tour Edge set out to design the “easiest fairway wood you’ll ever hit.” The final product is the Tour Edge Hot Launch E522 fairway wood. Following my testing, it’s a pretty tough claim to argue with and great for any player looking for extreme “game improvement” (GI). If easy launch, anti-slice sounds like what you need in a fairway wood, this review is for you.

The first thing I want you to remember with the Tour Edge Hot Launch E522 fairway wood is that it’s an extreme GI golf club. This means it’s for the players looking for every bit of forgiveness and help they can get from the golf club. As such, you should be expecting to be signing up for some offset. The offset is definitely noticeable, but is by no means offensive or difficult to look down at behind the ball. The head itself has a rounder profile, but is far from oversize.

While definitely intended for the extreme game improvement crowd, it really is a playable look for anyone seeking the performance benefits that the Hot Launch E522 fairway wood provides. Like I’ve said in the other HL 522 reviews, the overall aesthetic in this series is much more refined giving the clubs a more premium look .

How Does it Feel?

Tour Edge introduced their Diamond Face 2.0 technology to the Hot Launch lineup. There are 42 diamond shapes of varying sizes behind the face that act as mini trampolines. Working in tandem with the Diamond Face is the 360º Cup Face, which allows the whole face to flex more at impact creating more “jump”. Overall, the E522 fairway wood’s face is generous with a lot of pop and precise response .

Additionally, the E522 fairway wood has a super low and deep center of gravity (CG) courtesy of the Houdini Sole (more on that later). This basically means the club’s balance point is in the sole of club toward the trailing edge. I found this CG location made the HL E522 feel exceptionally well balanced and easy to control through the hitting zone. That led to me having more confidence over the ball and feeling in control of every shot.

Houdini Sole also impacts turf interaction quite a bit. The Houdini Sole reduces friction with the ground so the club cuts through the turf cleaner allowing for more club face to make contact with the ball. This also helps with more ball speed and better feedback at impact as it reduces drag through the grass.

How Does it Sound?

I would describe the Tour Edge Hot Launch E522 fairway wood’s sound as firm and direct with a metallic tone to it. The generous Diamond Face maintains this tone across most of the surface. It’s a sort of “pop” mixed with a good “whack”. As you approach the extreme ends or super low on the face, the tone becomes a bit more metallic and slightly more rigid as should be expected with extreme mishits.

On-Course Performance

Like its predecessor , the Tour Edge Hot Launch E522 is extremely easy to launch courtesy of the Houdini Sole. This also adds more spin to the shot to help keep the ball in the air for greater carry distance. While better players may be looking for more piercing launches and less spin, the player that the E522 fairway wood is geared toward needs all the help they can get with launching the ball and holding it in the air.

The same player is likely looking for all the help they can get fighting a slice and hitting it straight. Well, slicers rejoice! Tour Edge combined elements such as built in offset and a heel weighting to to address this miss. This design helps square the face at impact so your shot will be straighter and take the right side of the course out of play . Admittedly, I am not the target audience for this club, but the HL E522 fairway wood is about as anti-right as I’ve ever seen .

Final Thoughts – Tour Edge Hot Launch E522 Fairway Wood

The Tour Edge Hot Launch E522 is about as easy to hit as it gets with a fairway wood. I said it last year, and I’ll say it again… the Hot Launch E series is an absolute cheat code. Just swing away and let the club do the work! Shot after shot resulted in a towering draw whether my swing deserved it or not. In my opinion, the HL E522 fairway wood is a great option for the beginner that will gladly accept all the help they can get. That said, it’s also a great option for veteran players that slice their fairway woods or struggle to get them carrying in the air. The forgiveness is nothing short of impressive and the $160 price tag makes the Hot Launch E522 fairway wood quite accessible to a wide range of golfers.

1) I disagree that it’s no value. The benefits of this club do not purely equate to club speed. It’s about forgiveness, ease of launch, and anti-right. We can still commentate on the club’s ability to do those things. 2) I’m not sure what expectation are in people available to test, write, and provide insight necessary on our schedules to produce content. We have a lot to do at any given time, and when necessary or available, we will try to work with other resources. That said, I still don’t think we are unable to provide the insight people are seeking for this club.

The Tour Edge HL4 fairway wood pairs high performance and custom fitting with a very affordable price.  Incredibly easy to launch.  A flat-out great club at any price.

Introduction

Custom fitting has tremendous benefits, but it can also be very expensive.  Tour Edge aims to deliver those benefits to golfers without the high cost through their new HL4 line of clubs.  Encompassing everything from drivers through irons, the Hot Launch 4 line can be custom fit and shipped direct to the golfer within 48 hours, all at prices far below most off the rack clubs.  For this review, I tested the HL4 fairway wood to see how it stacks up to its pricier peers.

The Tour Edge Hot Launch 4 fairway wood has a slightly above average size at address.  Similarly, its face is a bit taller than most, particularly in the toe.  This larger head and taller face will make some golfers feel a bit more confident at address.

Overall, the fit and finish of the HL4 is top shelf .  There’s nothing about the look of this club that would indicate its price is half that of other leading fairway woods.

Sound & Feel

The Tour Edge Hot Launch 4 fairway wood has a quiet impact sound that’s prototypical of a fairway wood.  Contact sounds high pitched and metallic, the classic “tink” that I’ve always associated with this club type.

Despite the big club head, the HL4 provides very good feedback through the hands .

Performance

First impressions are important, and no club in recent memory has come out of the gates like the Tour Edge HL4 fairway wood.  As I’ve said many times, I’m no Henrik Stenson.  Fairway woods tend to launch too low and be too inconsistent for me.  However, my first swing with the HL4 produced a shot that looked like a driver shot off a tee .  It hit the back net of the range (approximately 240 yards) with plenty left in the tank.  I was gobsmacked, and I spent a good thirty seconds looking around wondering whether I had slipped into the matrix.

While not every shot was that good, the HL4 fairway wood was consistently launching higher than any fairway wood I’ve ever hit .  That translated to more consistent carry distance.  What was also impressive is that, despite the high launch, the ball flight was strong .  Even cut shots failed to balloon into the wind.

As if great performance at a low price wasn’t enough, Tour Edge offers custom fitting on the HL4 fairway wood, too.  There are over 750 custom fitting centers across the US where you can dial in the specs that will suit your game.  What’s more, once your specs are received by Tour Edge, they will build your club in Batavia, IL and ship it out within 48 hours.

The Tour Edge HL4 fairway wood is available in two different configurations.  The standard model, seen here, comes in 15, 17, 19, and 22 degrees.  There is also an Offset model , designed to fight a slice, that’s available in 15.5, 19.5, 22.5, 24.5, and 26.5 degrees.

Do not be fooled by the budget-friendly price tag: the Tour Edge HL4 fairway wood is a great club that deserves serious consideration from all players .  It’s incredibly easy to launch and packs plenty of ball speed and distance.  Add the custom fitting options to that mix and you have a club that stands alone in the current market.

The whole HL4 line has my attention. I hope to be getting a new driver soon as well as irons and these are on the radar.

I bought a HL3 4 wood to replace my 3 wood and my 5 wood That wasn’t a good experience put both my xr16 back in the bag. Maybe this years model is better.

I have the HL2 and HL3 fairway woods and they are wonderful clubs, yet my favorite and longest is the tour edge EX9 long 3 wood. It beats many other top name brands I’ve tried!
