Looking for the best ways to get from Cartagena to Santa Marta?  You’re in the right place! 

Cartagena is one of the main tourist hubs in Colombia. It’s a vibrant, colourful city that’s popular with backpackers wanting to explore, soak in some of the cultures, dine out at popular rooftop bars and try some authentic street food.

Whilst in Cartagena, taking a trip to Santa Marta, the gateway to Tayrona National Park , is a must-do for any nature fans! But it’s quite the task to get there and usually involves at least six hours of dreaded bus travel.

Luckily for you, this is an easy journey we ourselves have completed in the past. We know all the tips and tricks to be able to travel between the two locations with ease.

This post outlines everything you need to know about getting from Cartagena to Santa Marta, from safety concerns, journey times, prices, drop-off points and more.

So, let’s start and discuss  all the possible ways to travel from Cartagena to Santa Marta!

Cartagena to Santa Marta : A Summary

The distance between Cartagena and Santa Marta is roughly 155 miles (248km).  It will take around 5-6 hours to drive directly between the two locations, depending on traffic, road conditions and mode of transport. 

The most popular way to travel between Cartagena and Santa Marta is by bus .

In summary,  there   are four ways to get from Cartagena   to Santa Marta.  These options are:

• Tourist shuttle
• Private transfer
• Flying (although I don’t recommend this due to there not being any direct flights)

Personally,  I think the best way to get to Santa Marta from Cartagena is by bus. Tickets can easily be booked online here , making your journey reliable, easy and straightforward.

But, there are four ways to travel between the two places, so I’ll explain in detail and let you decide how to travel between Santa Marta and Cartagena.

Booking buses in Colombia? 🚌

• If you’re looking for cheap and reliable bus tickets, I highly recommend checking out Busbud. We used them all over Central and South America, and not only did they save us a fortune, but they also saved us a LOT of stress! (Especially as we can’t speak Spanish!)

1. Cartagena to Santa Marta by bus

Travelling via bus, in my opinion, is the best option. Why? Well, buses in Colombia are amazing . You can expect air conditioning, USB ports, Wifi, modern seats and top-notch safety conditions.

You can book a direct bus from Cartagena to Santa Marta here , but let’s discuss some of the all-important details.

When you are  travelling from Cartagena to Santa Marta, you will need to:

• 🚕 Get a taxi to the public bus terminal in Cartagena . This can take up to an hour due to traffic, so leave in plenty of time. For a small, 15-person bus,  travel to the Berlinastur bus terminal.
• 🎟️ Buy tickets for a bus from Cartagena to Santa Marta.  There are constant buses running between the two locations throughout the day. Prices usually hover around $12 USD per person. ➡  Pre-book bus tickets here!
• 🚎 Board the bus from Cartagena to Santa Marta.  This journey will take roughly 5-6 hours depending on traffic and the road conditions. Buses are modern, clean, safe and even have USB ports, so sit back and relax!
• 🏨 The Santa Marta bus terminal is in the centre of town.  From here, you can either travel to your accommodation (by foot or taxi) or board your next mode of transport for Minca or Tayrona Park!

🦉 TOP TIP: When booking your bus ticket online, be sure to check the exact terminal your bus will depart from. There are different-sized buses and departure terminals in Cartagena.

Which bus company is best?

If you look at the bus journeys online, you’ll see that you can book with either Berlinas, Unitransco, Copetran, Marsol or Flota La Macarena. That’s a lot of bus companies to compare and choose between!

But the bottom line is – they all run from Cartagena to Santa Marta.

In the grand scheme of things, there aren’t many differences between the buses. All of them get you from A to B. All of them are safe and take roughly the same amount of time.

The only slight differences are the sizes of the buses. The Marsol is a lot bigger and therefore has more locals onboard than the smaller Berlinas shuttle.

But again, this makes very little difference to your journey, and if you’re on a tight budget, I recommend going for the cheapest!

If you want to pre-book your journey through Bookaway , you will see options for Unitransco, Copetran and Flota La Macarena. Just book your bus depending on the time you need to leave and your budget. Don’t worry too much about the bus company.

Buying a ticket and boarding the bus

If you haven’t pre-booked your ticket online , you will need to buy your ticket at the bus station.

Whilst in Colombia, we both used online ticket systems as well as buying in person. We found we preferred booking online as our Spanish is pretty awful, and it saved a lot of queuing time. But this choice is entirely down to you.

When you arrive at the bus station, find the main ticket booth. Most bus stations do not take credit/debit cards (like most places in Colombia), so make sure you have enough cash on you.

Simply tell the ticket operator where you are going, and they’ll print you off a ticket. Keep hold of this, as the driver will check as you board the bus.

You will also have an assigned seat on your ticket. I recommend sitting in this seat, otherwise a local may get a little upset!

Depending on the bus you’re getting, your luggage will either go in the luggage holder underneath or right at the back.

Never put any valuables in any bags that aren’t with you, we’ve heard far too many horror stories about bags being stolen and going missing, so keep as much as you can with you!

There are toilets on all of the bigger buses in Colombia. If you’re getting a smaller shuttle, it will stop every couple of hours for toilet breaks. Top tip – pack your own toilet paper!

Don’t forget to take travel sickness tablets if you’re prone to becoming ill on long journeys. The roads in Colombia can be a little bumpy, and the drivers don’t exactly follow the same road rules we have in the UK, so it’s worth it!

You may also stop a few times at police checkpoints. Don’t worry, these are routine and you don’t need to do anything.

Finally, make sure you take your own food, drinks and snacks. There will be a couple of roadside stops for snacks (or someone will board the bus selling fruit, rice or anything else they can manage), but they aren’t great. Top up on as much food before the journey – six hours is a long time!

2. Cartagena to Santa Marta by tourist shuttle

Another way to get from Cartagena to Santa Marta is by tourist shuttle . Tourist shuttles are smaller than the big buses, but they’re just as safe and reliable.

There isn’t much difference between the buses and shuttles, apart from the size and the number of stops. But again, this depends on the bus or shuttle you book .

To look at prices and check the availability of tourist shuttles from Cartagena to Santa Marta, I recommend using Bookaway .

If you pre-book online, that means you don’t have to extensively test your Spanish skills at the bus station, and you can walk directly onto your transfer.

• Life Is Good: best backpacker hostel in Cartagena!
• Viajero Hostel: another excellent hostel for solo travellers or couples!

3. Cartagena to Santa Marta by private transfer

Another way to get from Cartagena to Santa Marta is to travel via private transfer .  This is perfect if there are more than four of you, you want your own space or you are short on time!

Similar to a taxi,  private transfers  will pick you up from your hotel or hostel in Cartagena and take you directly to your accommodation in Santa Marta . But of course, it’s expensive! I’d only suggest this mode of transport if you’re  not  travelling on a backpacker’s budget.

Private transfers  from Cartagena to Santa Marta can take from 4-5 hours  (depending on traffic, road conditions and other factors). Most hostels and hotels can organise this, or you can book a  private transfer online here .

4. Cartagena to Santa Marta by flying

Ok, I actually don’t recommend flying between Cartagena and Santa Marta. Why? Simply because there are no direct flights between Cartagena and Santa Marta (as of 2023). 

If you fly between the two locations, you will need to take an indirect flight via either Medellin or Bogota. This is a pretty long-winded way to get there, and I don’t recommend it!

Arriving in Santa Marta: What next?

There isn’t a lot to do in Santa Marta, so staying for 1-2 nights before you head off to Tayrona or Minca is enough.

Bus terminals in Santa Marta have taxi ranks nearby. You can disembark your bus and jump in a taxi to your accommodation or next stop. Be sure to check on Google Maps to see if you can easily walk to your hostel instead of grabbing a taxi.

Where to stay in Cartagena

Cartagena is another big city in Colombia,  and there are many different areas to stay in. I’ll be doing a post in the near future about all of the accommodation areas in Cartagena, but if you’re visiting for a short stay,  I recommend booking accommodation in  Getsemani .

Getsemani  is the main ‘hub’ of Cartagena and is home to the biggest backpacker hostels.  It’s also known for its colourful streets, range of restaurants, bars and nightlife.

For backpackers and short-term tourists in  Getsemani  (Cartagena),  I recommend one of the following:

Where to stay in Santa Marta

Santa Marta is another of Colombia’s buzzing coastal cities. Because it is the gateway to so many other popular destinations (such as Minca ), there are plenty of hostels and hotels to choose from.

When booking a hostel or hotel, be sure to check the ‘map’ function. This just ensures that you are booking accommodation in the actual city (and not in the countryside, unless that’s what you’re looking for). If you are staying in the countryside, you will need to organise additional transportation to get there.

1) how long should i stay in cartagena.

If you are visiting Cartagena for the first time, I recommend staying for around 3-4 nights.  This gives you enough time to spend a day at the beach, take some day tours out of the city ( snorkelling or to Palenque are unmissable), roam the colourful Cartagena streets and have an epic Colombian night out!

2) How much is a taxi from Santa Marta to Cartagena?

Depending on where and when you book, a taxi or Uber from Santa Marta to Cartagena is around $100 USD.

3) Is Santa Marta worth going to?

Personally, I think Santa Marta is worth it. Why? Because it’s the gateway to so many incredible places in the country ( Minca and the Tayrona National Park are worth the trip to Santa Marta alone).

There are a lot of mixed views about Santa Marta both on the Internet and among fellow travellers . In short, it’s a busy city on the Caribbean coast of Colombia that attracts many domestic tourists. It’s quieter than Cartagena (so if you found Cartagena too chaotic, you may prefer Santa Marta).

Disfrutad de un día diferente y visitad una de las ciudades más antiguas de América con esta excursión a Santa Marta desde Cartagena . ¡Imprescindible!

Pasaremos a recogeros por vuestro hotel de Cartagena de Indias a la hora indicada y subiremos a un minibús con destino  Santa Marta, una histórica localidad del departamento de Magdalena . ¿Sabíais que es una de las ciudades más antiguas de América ?

Antes de alcanzar nuestro destino, realizaremos una parada para desayunar en Ciénaga una arepa con huevo acompañada de zumo de naranja o café. Con las pilas cargadas, continuaremos el viaje a Santa Marta. 

Tras cuatro horas y media de trayecto, llegaremos a nuestro destino, la “Perla de América” . La primera parada de la visita guiada por Santa Marta será la hacienda Quinta San Pedro Alejandrino , el lugar donde falleció el libertador Simón Bolívar. Exploraremos sus diferentes salas y continuaremos el recorrido conociendo la estatua del Pibe Valderrama para aprender todo sobre la historia de este futbolista colombiano. 

Recorreremos el barrio Pescaito y nos dirigiremos a la bahía de Santa Marta, donde veremos el parque de los Novios , un lugar perfecto para repasar la vida de Simón Bolívar y desvelaros su relación con la ciudad. El tour por Santa Marta no estaría completo sin visitar la catedral , la más antigua de América del Sur. Además, conoceremos la plaza Bolívar y recorreremos las calles coloniales de la localidad colombiana. 

¿Siguiente parada? El Museo del Oro en la Casa de la Aduana , donde podréis descubrir el impresionante patrimonio cultural de Santa Marta y su región. Después, pondremos rumbo al sector de Rodadero, donde nos subiremos a una lancha para viajar hasta Playa Blanca . En este paraíso, disfrutaremos de una completa comida compuesta de pescados, patacones, arroz de coco y ensaladas. 

Finalmente, dejaremos atrás Santa Marta y, antes de regresar a Cartagena de Indias, realizaremos una parada en Barranquilla para conocer el Caimán del Río y la Ventana al Mundo. ¡El broche de oro a la excursión! Terminaremos la excursión en vuestro hotel tras 13 horas de recorrido.

In one big day trip, we take on the Colombian coastal highway and drive to Santa Marta, the last home of the great liberator Simon Bolivar.

On your Santa Marta Tour, you can stop and check out the Totumo Volcano for a relaxing mud bath. Also, there is an opportunity to check out a few sites in Barranquilla, the birthplace of Shakira and home of the Colombian national football team. Driving the coastal highway, you can take in amazing nature and small coastal towns.

Santa Marta is another amazing colonial Colombian coastal city with its own unique history. Historic, buildings and incredible nature. The Santa Marta Tour takes you to Colombia’s oldest city and the second to be founded in America.

The city is amazing with its old colonial architecture and beautiful beach promenade. Close by you can experience the Rodadero or Taganga beach. The Rodadero is beautiful and touristic, while Taganga is famous for its laid-back fisher village-style atmosphere.

The Santa Marta Tour will teach you about the great liberator Simon Bolivar who fought and liberated Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Peru from Spain’s colonial rule. We will visit the farm and now a museum named Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, which is where Simon Bolivar was buried.

Santa Marta is also famous for its amazing Tyrona Natural Reserve with the magnificent Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains. Pico Cristobal Colon is the highest peak at 5700 meters classified as the 5th most prominent summits of the world. Tyrona park is, due to its size and prominence, not itself a part of the Santa Marta Tour, but available with a specially tailored tour.

I did a tour w/ Martin last year in Cartagena and it was great. This year, I was coming back again for work, but also wanted to see some other areas of Colombia. Martin helped me organize a tour in Medellin, and 2 tours in la Zona Cafetera – La Cocora Valley, and a coffee farm. All three tours were great, and Martin arranged them all including ground transportation. He gave me good recommendations on hotels which I booked. And he consulted w/ me back and forth quite a bit on schedules, etc to help me make it work w/ my busy work schedule. It was great seeing another part of Colombia and learning more about the history of Medellin, etc.

5 Ways to Go from Cartagena to Santa Marta: Definitive Guide to How to Get to Santa Marta from Cartagena

Are you wondering how to get to Santa Marta from Cartagena or what is the best way to travel from Cartagena to Santa Marta?

Santa Marta is a popular addition to a trip to Cartagena or the Colombian Caribbean coast. It’s got a pretty colonial historic center and there are some decent beaches nearby. It’s also a great jumping off spot for several other neat destinations nearby.

So if you’re planning to visit multiple spots along the Caribbean coast, you might be asking yourself, how to get from Cartagena to Santa Marta.

You’re in luck, because, it’s relatively easy and relatively quick to get to Santa Marta from Cartagena. You even have a handful of different options. I’ve traveled from Cartagena to Santa Marta many times in many different ways.

In this post, I’ll go over the ways to get from Cartagena to Santa Marta, the pros and cons of each based on my experiences, and give you all the information you need to decide what’s the best way to get to Santa Marta from Cartagena for your trip.

5 Ways to Get to Santa Marta from Cartagena

As I mentioned in the introduction, Santa Marta is a popular addition to a trip to Cartagena or stop on a trek up the Colombian Caribbean coast.

It’s a decent enough destination in its own right with a pretty waterfront and some neat colonial vibes of its own. The beaches at El Rodadero and the pretty scenery at Taganga , both on the outskirts nearby are also nice.

But what really makes it worthwhile to come to Santa Marta from Cartagena is all the nearby other destinations, especially for nature lovers.

The mountain town of Minca with its jungle covered mountains and neat waterfalls, the unspoiled beaches of Tayrona National Park , and the hip vibes of beach town Palomino are all within a short distance of Santa Marta. I also loved the chill atmosphere of Costeño Beach . If you want to get really adventurous, you can even travel up to the rugged desert of La Guajira to Cabo de la Vela and on to Punta Gallinas , the northernmost point in South America!

Those are some of our favorite places in Colombia, after Cartagena, of course!

If you’re considering visiting any of them, you’ll most likely route through Santa Marta. As I see it, there are 5 ways to get from Cartagena to Santa Marta. They are:

• Private Transportation
• Charter Bus Services
• Buses from the Terminal
• Renting a Car and Driving
• Cartagena to Santa Marta Flights?

I’m going to go over some details, options, and pros and cons of each of those methods of transportation from Cartagena to Santa Marta below, but if you’re in a hurry, I strongly recommend either private transportation or charter bus services like Marsol and Berlinas over the other options.

One is more convenient, and one is more budget friendly while still being pretty convenient. The other options are only really worth it in certain, very specific situations. Read on for more details on each of those 5 options.

Private Transportation from Cartagena to Santa Marta

This is by far the most convenient, safest, and most comfortable way to travel to Santa Marta from Cartagena.

You can plan your departure time based on your schedule. You won’t be crammed in like sardines or uncomfortable in A/C that is too hot or too cold. You’ll be able to see all the pretty scenery out the window. You can stop for a potty break, a snack, or just to enjoy some of that scenery on the Cartagena to Santa Marta drive whenever you want.

It’s also generally going to be the quickest (spoiler: there are no direct flights from Cartagena to Santa Marta as of this writing).

It is, of course, also the second most expensive after flying, so those looking for a more budget friendly choice, should look to option 2 below.

I would recommend private transportation most in the following situations:

• You have limited time
• You have a tight schedule and things planned for certain times the day of travel
• You have limited Spanish

Private transportation would also make a great choice if you are a group of 3+ where the price can be divided between you to make it a bit more cost effective.

Charter Bus from Cartagena to Santa Marta

This is my preferred choice for how to get to Santa Marta from Cartagena.

It’s the perfect balance of being more budget friendly while still also being fairly comfortable and convenient. It’s the way we have traveled the most to Santa Marta from Cartagena, and the one I’d recommend as long as you’re not on a super tight schedule and are ok with shared transportation.

There are two main companies that offer charter Cartagena to Santa Marta bus services. Well, really these are usually big vans. The two companies are Marsol and Berlinas .

Both have offices in Marbella, a short and cheap taxi ride from the Walled City and easily accessible from the tourist areas of Cartagena. That is the main reason why I recommend them over the standard buses from the terminal I’ll talk about below.

Yes, they are a bit more expensive.

However, the terminal is a longer trip from the area where 99% of visitors to Cartagena will be staying, up to even an hour plus if traffic is bad. The money you’ll save on a cheaper ticket for a Cartagena to Santa Marta bus is often not worth it, and if you take a taxi to the terminal, you might not really spend any less total.

I’ve done both Berlinas and Marsol numerous times and both are fine.

I have a slight preference for Berlinas as I think they have a little bit better customer service and are often a tad cheaper (I’m not including prices here because they tend to change at least once a year and sometimes more often; generally the two companies are within a few thousand pesos of each other).

Marsol does offer door to door service, so they can pick you up from your hotel in Cartagena and/or drop you off at your hotel in Santa Marta. I generally don’t recommend this because they will pick you up much earlier than you’ll need to leave to take a taxi and the last time I checked they charged extra for this. It can be useful if you have a lot of luggage and/or are not sure your way around or not comfortable with taxis.

Honestly, though, they are pretty similar services, so I’d just contact them and pick the one that offers the best price and/or departure time. Both should have departures at least every 1-2 hours throughout the day.

There is one thing I’d say to keep in mind if you are flexible on departure time: ask if they offer any buses that go direct Cartagena to Santa Marta and don’t stop in Barranquilla. This will be quicker, because not only will they not stop to drop off and pick up passengers, but they will avoid traffic in and out of downtown Barranquilla too.

If they offer a direct bus and it works for you schedule wise, it’s worth it, because you should save an hour to an hour and a half off your travel time.

In my experience, both companies are pretty good about answering Facebook messages and Whatsapp messages (quicker) about current schedules and pricing. I’d recommend contacting them to confirm times and prices a few days before your trip from Cartagena to Santa Marta.

Generally, you don’t need to book in advance.

If it is a particular busy time of year, like Semana Santa or Christmas time, you should try to get there early to make sure you get a ticket or you could go to the office a day or two before and buy it just to be on the safe side.

There is just one word of warning I’d give here.

I’ve noticed a few anecdotes pop up in expat Facebook groups the last couple years about these buses being targeted for robberies. There is a stretch of road just outside of Santa Marta that goes through a pretty rough area, and often has backed up traffic. I’ve seen kids jump on big tractor trailers and steal lights off of them before passing through here.

Also, these buses also sometimes pick up people traveling between smaller towns and they pay the drivers under the table I’m pretty sure. One of those stories I’ve seen seems to suggest they think someone was in league with a driver.

I don’t know, out of the hundred or so people that take these buses everyday, a few stories over the span of a few years means this is a very infrequent occurrence, and I’d still be most likely to make this my choice for how to get to Santa Marta from Cartagena.

I would recommend avoiding night vans if possible and having some extra vigilance if you do need to take a night bus.

Day or night, I’d keep valuable items in a carryon type bag on your lap, not stored overhead or in the back. Having along a safety waist wallet or bra pouch to stash your cash, credit cards, passport, and other valuable isn’t a terrible idea either. If you’re traveling with very valuable equipment like nice computers or cameras, it might be worth considering if the extra cost of private transportation is worth it as a bit of better safe than sorry insurance.

Cartagena to Santa Marta Bus from the Bus Terminal

For traveling around most of Colombia on a budget, heading to the bus terminal, or terminal de transporte , and buying a bus ticket is the cheapest way to travel to nearby, or even in many cases faraway, cities.

That is also true for taking a Cartagena to Santa Marta bus.

So, why don’t I recommend it?

Because it comes with a big caveat.

As I mentioned in the introduction, the Cartagena bus terminal is far away from the main tourist area of Cartagena, all the way on the eastern edge of the city. That is basically the exact opposite side of the city from where the historic, colonial area, most hotels, and attractions are all located.

The officially established fare from the Walled City to the terminal for 2023 is $23,000 pesos and $32,700 COP from Bocagrande, El Cabrero, or Marbella. My experience is many taxis will either charge a bit more or just not want to take you, especially if there is traffic.

Speaking of traffic, with moderately heavy traffic, it can take an hour to get there. If you’re in a group and not pressed for time, this might be worth it as you can split the cost of the taxi.

If you’re solo, you’re going to end up spending the same or even more than if you had just booked a charter van from Cabrero on Marsol or Berlinas.

Now, you can take the Transcaribe buses to the terminal.

Route X-104 makes stops at the two stations by the Walled City (across from the tourist marina by the Clocktower and across from Centro Uno in Matuna) and goes to the terminal. You can also take any of the routes that say “Portal” that go to the main Transcaribe terminal and there you should be able to get a bus or cheaper taxi that goes to the terminal.

Transcaribe is actually quicker than a taxi in most cases since the buses have their own lane for much of the way. However, you’ll have to buy a card and load money on it. It also probably isn’t the most comfortable if you have much luggage.

You’re also still going to spend time getting to the terminal. Finallym, you’ll also be starting farther away from Santa Marta (it is a straight shot up the coast and you’re traveling inland to get to the terminal). You’re also likely to spend more time stopped in Barranquilla on these buses.

Honestly, I’d just recommend skimping somewhere else to make up the difference in cost between the charter bus and a bus from the terminal. For those traveling light and trying to spend as little as possible, it is the cheapest way to bus to Santa Marta from Cartagena, though.

If you do want to do a Santa Marta from Cartagena bus, you can get an idea of price and schedule and even book ahead at BookaWay and BusBud . While they offer more or less the same prices, you will usually find more options at the terminal as well.

Can I Rent a Car for the Cartagena to Santa Marta Drive?

Yes. You can rent a car and make the Cartagena to Santa Marta drive yourself. However, I don’t recommend this except for in some very specific cases.

First, people in Colombia drive very aggressively. Like up your tailpipe, passing on two lane roads overtaking multiple cars and just barely getting over before oncoming traffic collides with them kind of aggressive.

In my decade plus living in Colombia, I never had much desire to drive or rent a car. Oh, and did I mention, motorcycles weave in and out of traffic? This road between Cartagena and Santa Marta is especially bad because a lot of it is just a two lane road and there are lots of trucks, so lots of overtaking.

Now if you’re ok with that and/or are used to this kind of driving, you’ll probably be fine.

But, is it really worth it?

You’re likely spending similarly to having a private transfer and you do have to worry about any possible issues with the car.

There are a few stops you could make along the way, like the Mud Volcano or the Pink Sea of Galerazamba . However, I would still recommend just doing an extra day with them as a day trip out of Cartagena.

The only way I’d consider renting a car might be worth it is if you wanted to stop at various sites along the coast north of Santa Marta and are uncomfortable taking the buses, which are relatively easy.

Can’t I Just Take a Cartagena to Santa Marta Flight?

You might be asking yourself is it worth it to book a Cartagena to Santa Marta flight.

Given the fact that I have this last on the list, I imagine you have figured out I would say no, it’s not.

First of all, as of this writing in April 2023, there are currently no direct flights from Cartagena to Santa Marta. Most flights to Santa Marta from Cartagena will route through Bogotá, or maybe Medellín.

These are relatively short flights, and if you have a minimal layover, total travel time might be in the neighborhood of 3 hours. However, that’s really more like 5 once you factor in check-in and waiting to depart once landing.

Private transportation and charter buses take 4-6, depending on traffic (usually private more like 4-5, charter buses more like 5-6).

So, really, you’re spending a similar amount of time. You’ll have to deal with the hassle of airports, checking bags, risk of delays, etc.

Plus, you’re most likely paying more.

To me it’s not really worth it.

Even if you’d prefer not to take the bus, you’ll probably get a better deal just getting a private car, especially if you are two or more people.

If you are a solo traveler with only a carry-on, you could always check and see if you can get a deal on a flight with a minimal layover. If it were me, I’d probably just do the charter bus and save the pesos. Not worth it for just an hour or two extra in travel time, not to mention the risk the flights get delayed, in my opinion.

Now, they may add direct flights to Santa Marta from Cartagena at some point. I feel like they have had them in the past. You’re probably still only talking about saving 3 hours though, so I’d just do a bus or car.

Then, you will visit the historic center of Santa Marta, which is one of the city's main tourist sites with a rich history, architectural jewels and interesting places such as old houses, parks and colonial squares. At the Gold Museum, you will appreciate the ethnicity and anthropology of the Tayronas' ancient culture, their beliefs, their myths and their crafts. From Santa Marta, we go through the spectacular Mirador to Taganga. This small village is inhabited mainly by fishermen from the region, and it is very popular for relaxation and snorkeling because of its beauty and its calm and transparent waters. El trayecto desde Cartagena a Santa Marta es bastante común. Así que los autobuses operan constantemente en esta ruta durante todo el día. Hay frecuencias cada 40 minutos o un poco más. Las compañías que incluyen este trayecto son Expreso Brasilia, Torcoroma, Copetran, Berlinas y Marsol . Todas salen desde la Terminal de Transporte Cartagena que se encuentra a unos 45 minutos en coche de la Ciudad Amurallada.

La gran ventaja de ir en autobús es que es la opción más barata . Aunque por otro lado, no es la más rápida . Las empresas de autobuses indican que el viaje dura de 4 a 5 horas, pero nunca se cumple. Por lo que debes considerar que serán 6 horas de viaje en autobús . Así que te recomendamos comprar snacks y bebidas antes de iniciar el viaje.

Puedes comprar los billetes directamente en la boletería de las compañías u online . Cuando llegues a la terminal de autobuses varios vendedores se acercarán hacia ti a ofrecerte sus servicios. Si es temporada alta te recomendamos comprar los billetes con un par de días de antelación  para evitar cualquier contratiempo.

Nosotros utilizamos el Expreso Brasilia y pagamos 61.000 COP por persona (12€). El bus era bastante cómodo, pero tardó más de lo esperado . No sólo por el tráfico sino también porque en las ciudades donde hacía paradas como Barranquilla, donde se detuvo durante mucho tiempo en la estación.

La terminal de autobuses de Santa Marta está a tan solo 15 minutos en coche del centro. ¡Ahora sí estás listo para disfrutar de Santa Marta y explorar sus alrededores!

⏱ Duración del trayecto : 4 horas y media aproximadamente 💰 Precio del trayecto : Desde 90.000 COP o 18€ por persona

Una opción más cómoda para ir de Cartagena a Santa Marta es contratar un shuttle. Aunque contratar un transporte privado puede ser un poco más caro , no tardarás tanto como con el bus. Aunque puedas encontrarte con un poco de tráfico llegarás a Santa Marta en 4 horas o 4 horas y 30 minutos aproximadamente. ¡Cuando viajas, cada segundo cuenta!

El shuttle es un autobús más pequeño  que tiene capacidad para 15 personas aproximadamente. Hay dos compañías de shuttle que operan entre Cartagena y Santa Marta. Estas son Berlinastur y Marsol .

2.1. Shuttle Berlinas

Para coger el autobús Berlinas de Cartagena a Santa Marta tendrás que dirigirte hacia la oficina de la compañía ubicada en el barrio de Marbella . Está a 15 minutos en coche del casco antiguo de Cartagena, aunque el tiempo puede variar según el tráfico. Hay un shuttle cada 40 minutos y puedes comprar los billetes en la misma oficina en una pequeña ventanilla.

El shuttle hace una única parada en Barranquilla y finaliza el trayecto en la Terminal de Autobuses de Santa Marta o en la oficina cercana de Berlinas. Así que no tardarás tanto en llegar a Santa Marta . Además, aunque el precio puede ser un poco más elevado, si agregas el valor del traslado a las terminales, que están casi a las afueras de la ciudad, ya compensa mucho con el servicio del shuttle.

Al llegar a Santa Marta, te dejarán en la terminal principal de autobuses, que se encuentra a unos 10 minutos del centro en coche o también te puede dejar en la oficina de Berlinas que se encuentra en plena ciudad.

2.2. Shuttle Marsol

Una gran ventaja de contratar un transporte privado con Marsol es que te recogen y te dejan en tu hotel . Aunque puede ser algo pesado para quienes son los primeros en subirse y últimos en bajarse porque tendrás que sumarle todo ese tiempo. De todas formas, es una opción muy conveniente para llegar a Santa Marta. El precio de este trayecto por persona es de 90.000 COP (18€)  y puedes adquirir los billetes en línea o en la oficina.

Otra opción para ir de Cartagena a Santa Marta es contratar un conductor privado. Si bien es la alternativa más cómoda, también es la más cara . El tiempo será de 4 horas o incluso menos. ¡Todo depende del tráfico con el que te encuentres! El valor de este traslado varía entre 70€ y 90€ por persona. Puedes reservar tu traslado privado online a través de 12Go .

Si estás pensando en ir de Cartagena a Santa Marta , seguramente es porque quieres visitar el principal atractivo cercano a esta ciudad. El Parque Nacional Tayrona es una joya impresionante que ver en Colombia . Ir de excursión desde Cartagena en un día puede ser una opción si es que sólo te interesa conocer el Parque Tayrona y nada más.

Eso sí, debemos advertirte que serán más de 4 horas de viaje hasta el lugar. Es decir 8 horas de viaje en total contando la ida y el regreso . Será un viaje cansado, pero todo lo que el parque tiene para ofrecer vale la pena por completo.

En esta excursión te retiran y te dejan en tu hotel, incluye el traslado, un guía en español, la entrada al parque y la comida. La duración de la excursión es de 17 horas y 30 minutos . Así que lo mejor es que no organices nada más ese día y lo dediques por completo al Tayrona.

¿Cuál es la opción más rápida para ir de Cartagena a Santa Marta?

Sin duda, la opción más rápida para ir de Cartagena a Santa Marta es contratar un traslado privado . Principalmente, porque no tendrás que hacer paradas en cada ciudad o pueblo y esperar a otros pasajeros. La diferencia adicional del tiempo de recorrido entre un shuttle y un bus puede ser entre 1 y hasta 2 horas.

¿Cuál es la opción más barata para llegar a Santa Marta desde Cartagena?

Si quieres ahorrar unos cuantos pesos entonces ir en bus será la mejor opción para ti. Debes considerar que el autobús tardará alrededor de 1 o 2 horas más ya que hace algunas paradas largas. También al coste del bus debes agregar el precio del traslado hacia y desde las terminales de transporte.

¿Qué opción recomendamos para llegar a Santa Marta desde Cartagena?

Luego de tomar el bus para ir de Cartagena a Santa Marta , definitivamente tenemos que recomendarte que la mejor opción es contratar un traslado privado . Nosotros quisimos ahorrar algo de dinero al ir en bus, pero al sumar el coste de los taxis a las terminales, casi que el precio terminaba siendo el mismo. Además, que un viaje que debía durar alrededor de 4 horas y media terminó siendo de 6 horas. ¡Fue muy agotador!

¿Cuántos kilómetros hay de Cartagena a Santa Marta?

Entre estas dos ciudades costeras existen 235 kilómetros . El tiempo que pueda tomar este traslado varía mucho según el tipo de transporte que decidas contratar.

Tour a Santa Marta tiene todo lo que turistas nacionales y extranjeros buscan vivir en un viaje.

Este destino es uno de los más adorados por los visitantes. Sus bellas playas de arena blanca, su clima tropical, su infraestructura hotelera y los innumerables planes que se pueden realizar en el Rodadero son los más apetecidos por los viajeros.

Recibe ese nombre por los lugareños debido a la montaña de arena adyacente a la playa que en los años 60’s que era utilizada por los bañistas para descender rodando desde su cima, hasta caer en las cristalinas aguas.
