16 Things To Do In Timisoara, Romania’s Most Beautiful City

Timisoara things to do

Timisoara was the first place I visited in Romania and it remains one of my favourites to this date. Although there are plenty of things to do in Timisoara, it wasn’t the ‘must-sees’ that captivated me: it was the colourful corners and the slow, friendly pace of life.

As the European Parliament’s Capital of Culture in 2023 , Timisoara is overflowing with museums, galleries and well-preserved historical buildings. But it’s not a town of stuffy old museums. Every building in Timi is a vibrant colour, only rivalled by the rainbow ‘Umbrella Street’ that I wandered through at least six times a day. Timisoara is nothing like Bucharest (thank God!) and also nothing like traditional Transylvania. It feels distinct from the rest of Romania. Given that it’s only a €20 flight from many European capitals, I’m predicting a bright future for Timisoara!

TIMISOARA ESSENTIALS Accommodation: Booking.com / Hostelworld Tours & activities in Timisoara: GetYourGuide Getting there: car hire ( Rentalcars.com ) / train ( CRF Calatori ) / bus ( Autogari ) / car pool ( BlaBlaCar ) Arriving from Central Europe : Flixbus Getting around: on foot

Timisoara introduction

Timisoara is located in the west part of Romania, just 4 hours from Budapest and 5 hours from Vienna . For that reason, it’s often the first stop travellers from Western Europe make when visiting Romania. As Dan, my hostel host, explained to me, it’s also the most westernised part of Romania. In Timisoara, you’ll find modern influences and forward-thinking attitudes that are less prevalent in the eastern part of Romania. Basically, the locals are an open-minded, friendly bunch, and the vibrant city is full of culture. I was ready to explore and suss out the best things to do in Timisoara.

what to do timisoara

Getting to Timisoara, Romania

By air: Timisoara Airport services Romanian and international cities. Flights to London start from €20! I use Skyscanner to find the best prices. To get from the airport to city centre, catch a local bus, a taxi or an airport shuttle. The drive takes 15-20 minutes. From Central Europe – Flixbus doesn’t run between cities in Romania but it does drop you in Romania from other countries. It’s the cheapest way to get around Europe, if not the most efficient: there are often delays and sometimes it leaves you out of town or departs from unmarked bays at stations. It’s worth it for budget travellers: just have Uber downloaded for when you arrive in Timisoara.  Bus: To get between Timisoara and other Romanian destinations, search and book bus tickets on the Autogari website.

Train: Book your trains on the CFC Calatori website. My next stop was Sibiu but unfortunately, there wasn’t a direct journey. It was 7 hours with 2 changes so instead, I took… BlaBlaCar : This carpooling service connects travellers and drivers with spare seats. It cost just 40 RON and took 3 hours to reach Sibiu from Timisoara, plus I got to chat with some friendly locals.

The best hostel Timisoara

The best hostel in Timisoara is Inverve Hostel . Usually, I see accommodation as just a place to crash but this hostel and its friendly owners enhanced my stay and gave me a fantastic insight into Romanian culture.

Inverve Hostel Timisoara Romania

Inverve hostel feels super new and modern; more like an apartment than a hostel. As a refurbished synagogue, it has retained its original features but been kitted out with lots of modern amenities and colourful artwork. It’s in the centre of town, close to the main Timisoara attractions. Dan and Simona who run the place have thought of every detail: hairdryers, diffusers, straightens, makeup remover, shampoo, coffee, homemade jam and free biscuits! Each bed is a little unit with a privacy curtain and its own lamp and power socket. Dan and Simona are so helpful and give you lots of advice for your stay. Dan even took me for food and ice cream when he had some free time, and I learnt so much about Timisoara and Romania from him.  Book your stay at Inverve Hostel from €18 .

How long to spend in Timisoara

Well, how long do you want to spend soaking up the city? You could easily see Timisoara in a day. However, I loved spending two, especially in good weather. It’s a lovely outdoor city with lots of open squares and outside dining, perfect for whiling away a summer afternoon with a loved one (AKA myself) or a good book.

Things to do in Timisoara

You don’t need to pack your practical shoes and pound the pavements from dawn to dusk. Instead, get up at your leisure and slowly sip your coffee before heading to the following places. Here’s what to do in Timisoara…

1. Union Square (Piata Unirii)

Union square

Begin your Timisoara adventures with a walk around Union Square, named in 1919 at the end of WWI. There are three main squares in Timisoara but this was my favourite. The buildings surrounding it are all so colourful and unusual, plus it’s a lovely place to sit with a drink in the summer. It’s also the cultural heart of the Timisoara with the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral and St George’s Catholic Cathedral sat opposite each other.

The following Union Square buildings are some of the best things to see in Timisoara…

2. St George’s Church

George church timisoara activities

Built in baroque style by an Austrian architect, this cathedral took 18 years to complete. It represents just one-half of Romania’s religious spectrum: Roman Catholicism, which has long sat beside the Orthodox Church, a type of Christianity widespread in Eastern Europe.

3. Casa Bruck

Casa Bruck Timisoara sightseeing

This unusual building immediately caught my eye when I arrived in Union Square. Casa Bruck is one of the most popular attractions in Timisoara, built in Art Nouveau style.

Casa Bruck

You may have noticed a bizarre amount of pharmacies in Romania, apparently due to a lack of drug regulation and the opportunity to make an income from this. An early pharmacy stood on this spot in the early 1800s, owned by a wealthy family. It was bought off them in 1910 by an architect called Salomon Bruck who re-designed it and named it after himself (modest!). There’s still a pharmacy on the lower floor today.

4. Visit the Art Museum

Art Museum Timisoara

Inside this decadent Baroque palace beside Union Square is Timisoara’s Art Museum . Fans of traditional art will be in their element because most of the paintings date back several centuries. It was a little dull in my opinion, but I’ll let you make up your own mind. Visitor details: Opening times are 10am-6pm (last entry 5.30pm). I paid a reduced student price of 10 RON to enter but the standard fee is 20 RON.

5. Stroll umbrella street

Umbrella street things to do Timisoara Romania

Of all the things to do in Timisoara, none are more Instagrammable than Umbrella Street. I’m curious which world city had the first one and where the idea came from – I’ll get back to you on that. Timisoara’s Umbrella Street connects to Liberty Square.

6. Take the free walking tour

For an informative and funny tour that lasts around 2 hours, take a walking tour with Timisoara Free Tours . Romanian history is a long and complex one but I felt much more knowledgeable after my trip. The guide, Andrei, works full-time elsewhere and still manages to run the tour in his free time. I’m so glad he does because it was a fantastic intro to the sights of Timisoara. Book your tour in advance .

7. Victory Square

Victory square

Victory Square is Timisoara’s main square but I still preferred the feel of Union Square. Still, a few of Timisoara’s sights can be seen at Victory Square, and there’s a large paved area where locals relax and socialise. This is the best place to people-watch and soak up the atmosphere, especially on a sunny day.  Like many squares in Eastern Europe with the same name, Victory Square celebrates the fall of communism in 1989. It’s also known as Opera Square due to the sizeable opera house at its centre. Why not catch a show if that’s your thing?

8. The Orthodox Cathedral

orthodox cathedral timisoara activities

Measuring 90 metres in height and boasting 11 towers, the Orthodox Cathedral is the most popular Timisoara attraction for tourists and locals. Make sure to venture inside. Gold, gold, everywhere! It can hold 5,000 people at a time, making it one of the biggest orthodox cathedrals outside of Russia. Inside, I watched locals light candles to their loved ones while considering how different yet similar houses of worship are around the world…

9. Ride the trams

Yellow tram

… Or at least snap some photos of them! Realistically, you don’t need public transport while visiting Timisoara: the city centre is small enough to walk around, and much of it is pedestrianised. However, the trams are a sight to behold. Many cities in Europe have modernised their tram network, yet the ones in Timisoara look straight outta the ’80s. I loved their old-school facade, as well as the extremely low prices. A ride will cost you 2.5 RON (€0.50).

10. Walk the river and stop for a drink

Green canal walkway Timisoara

Timisoara is a green, leafy city surrounded by nature. The riverbank isn’t a tourist place to visit in Timisoara but that’s why I liked it. Ditch the crowds and stroll the riverbank, ideally with an ice cream in hand. During summer evenings, cafes and bars spill out onto the banks and DJs play ’til late. You’ll even find a few static boats where you can drink on the deck – a vibe I’d expect more from hipster Budapest than sleepy Timisoara!

11. The Communist Consumer Museum

Another of the top things to do in Timisoara is soak up the rich yet troubled history. There’s nowhere better to do this than Timisoara’s Communist Consumer Museum. Here you can explore an apartment building decked out with furniture, technology and food products popular during the communist era. Visit between 10am and 11pm Monday to Saturday or 2pm-11pm on Sundays. Entrance is free.

12. Liberty Square

Statue in Liberty Square

As the oldest square in the city dating back to the 1700s, Liberty Square is another of the best places to visit in Timisoara. Here you’ll find buildings of interest including the Town Hall, plus modern statues and an artsy solar-powered tree to charge your smartphone. Don’t miss the umbrella alley leading up to it.

Foodie things to do in Timisoara

Like me, Dan from Inverve Hostel is a foodie. After showing me the main Timisoara sights, we headed to eat. I have to say I didn’t eat much Romanian food here but that’s maybe because I still had 2 weeks left for eating adventures.  These are some of the best places to eat in Timisoara , both international and local:

13. Jolie Bistro

Avocado and salmon burger at Jolie Bistro

Dan raves about Jolie Bistro and recommends it to all his guests. I can see why – the pork ribs were unbelievably rich and succulent. For my main, I ordered this amazing avocado burger with smoked salmon inside. It was so fresh and delicious. Along with a fruit lemonade, it came to 50 RON (€10) per person: on the higher end of Romanian prices but worth it. You can feel good about supporting a local business because Jolie Bistro is family-run with a friendly owner. Pizza, pasta, salads and meat dishes are also on the menu.

14. Neața Omelette Bistro

Omelette and coffee at Neața Omelette Bistro

If you’re craving brunch in Timisoara, you’re in luck. This scrambled egg and avocado breakfast was my first meal in Romania and I remember being stunned by the prices: less than €5 for breakfast and coffee. Make a visit to Neața Omelette Bistro and you’ll be set up for the day.

15. Lera’s Bistro

Serbia burger at Lera's Bistro

One of the most interesting meals I ate in Timisoara was a Serbian one. What is Serbian food, you might ask? Like other Eastern European countries, there’s a meaty focus but unlike the others, there’s actually some spice. Hallelujah! Lera’s serve one of the most famous Serbian foods, pljeskavica, which is a bit like a burger. Flavoursome cuts of beef are served in a bready bun with chilli, pickles and sauce.  There’s no English menu at Lera’s which is how I ended up ordering a double burger patty. There aren’t too many options on the menu so you can’t go that wrong, but you can end up in an accidental meat coma… Still, it was a great meal and so cheap at 20 RON (€4) including a drink. I guess the single patty is even cheaper.

Tip – Belgrade, the Serbian capital is just 2.5 hours away so it’s an easy side trip from Timi. If you go, check out my things to do in Belgrade article!

16. Il Gelato Di Bruno

Ice cream at Il Gelato Di Bruno Timisoara

Dan took me to Il Gelato Di Bruno , explaining it serves the best ice cream in Timisoara. I couldn’t disagree! I had one scoop of cherry ice cream and one of chocolate. Delicious!

Other cafes and restaurants in Timisoara

Dan recommended these spots which I didn’t have a chance to try. They’re all renowned for their food and run by local families:

  • Casa Bunicii 1 – a local restaurant that serves all the classic Romanian foods like mici sausages and sarmale (meat-stuffed cabbage rolls).
  • Kos Greek Taverna – I wouldn’t have expected a Greek restaurant in Romania to be amazing but apparently the food at this family-run spot is well worth trying. The pictures I’ve seen of the souvlaki do indeed look very juicy and packed with fresh ingredients.
  • Gratarul cu Staif – the best grill restaurant in Timisoara, apparently!

Thanks for reading my Timisoara travel guide!

I hope you have a better idea of what to do in Timisoara. I only have good things to say about this colourful, friendly Romanian city. I’m sure you’ll love it just as much.

timisoara free tours

our guide was Sergiu and this trip was really nice. we were looking for a day out to do some light walking in nature and he took us to some great places in the national park. he was very friendly and made sure everyone was taken care of. the trails in the forest was beautiful, the air so fresh and clean, and the lake a wonderful serene sight. and we also learned so much about Romanian history!

Perfect tour with Alex, giving detailed and sophisticated explanations, always surprising and good transitions to the next topic :-) Highly recommended

I had decided on visiting Timisoara this year because it was the European Capital of Culture. While planning this visit I decided that I wanted to experience some of the natural scenery present in the Banat area of Romania in the vicinity of Timisoara. So I chose 2 Romanian Friend tours to do this, one of these being the tour Magical Hike in Nera-Beusnita National Park. I went on the this tour on a very nice weather Saturday with Liviu, my Romanian Friend guide. Liviu was a great person to take this tour with, as he was very friendly and helpful and loves the outdoors. So we had a very pleasant day together doing several hikes in the National Park. We had very good conversation during the day and Liviu answered the questions that I had, we discussed other places in Romania that I had previously visited and the present state of the environment in Romania. We began the day with a 2 hour drive from Timisoara to Nera-Beusnita National Park, including a short stop for breakfast just outside of Oravita. When we reached the National Park, we began our first hike to reach the beautiful small lake called the Eye of the Bey. This hike was quite easy, with mostly flat terrain and took about 45 minutes to arrive at the lake. The lake being quite scenic, we spent some time there enjoying the atmosphere. We then continued our hike for another half-hour to arrive at the waterfall location. This location was also quite scenic, but due to the time of the year (late summer), there was very little water going over the falls and I had to imagine what it might be like during the spring of the year, which Liviu explained was the best time of the year to see real waterfall views here. But it was still a nice hike to get to the falls. We then retraced our steps from the falls back to the Eye of the Bey lake and to the beginning of the trail, where we were able to view a local fish hatchery close to the trail. We then drove a short distance to the Sasca Romana (Roman tunnels), believed to have been present since Roman times in this area, to explore them for a bit. Our hikes were now completed, but Liviu took a slightly different route back to Timisoara and I got to see several small villages in the area, Socolari and Iliada. I particularly enjoyed seeing the local houses and architecture in these villages and was told that while these villages are not presently as active as they once were, new activity is occuring in them because Romanians and foreigners are purchasing houses and properties and renovating them as vacation homes or cultural landmarks. This was encouraging to see. All in all, it was a great day in the rural Banat region and Liviu was a great guide to share the journey with.

On Sept 6, 2023 I met with Mark-Alex in mid-morning to begin our Walking Tour of Timisoara. I had just arrived in Timisoara the afternoon before, so I was just beginning to know the city when we met that morning. Mark-Alex is easy to engage with and very easy to have conversation with. We talked about many things during the tour and I asked many questions during our walk. So we had good back and forth discussion throughout the walk. Beginning the tour, we walked through and explored the three main squares (Victoria, Liberty, Union) of the city, St. George Square, Eugene Savoy Street and into the Maria Theresia Bastion area where Mark-Alex gave me plenty of background on how the Habsburg Empire made Timisoara into a fortress town after they had captured the town from the Ottomans in the early 1700's and how nobles like Eugene of Savoy were instrumental in this process. There was good focus on the history of the city, which I enjoyed. We then walked back through Union Square to explore some of the fabulous buildings and architecture located there. Near the end of the tour we walked out to the Piata 700 area to stop in and see the food and flower markets in this area and to try some ethnic foods and get a coffee. This was a nice ending to a very good tour. I felt very pleased with the outcome and I give Mark-Alex the credit for it.

Our guide for this tour was Alex, who was very nice and funny. He brought us along scenic roads while making the drive to the Delta and arranged a boat ride as well as a visit to the Veterans Cave along the Danube. He was very passionate about the history of the locations he brought us too, and told us about the recent renovations being done in the town of Băile Herculane when we visited.

The tour was amazing, The guides was very accommodating and knowledgeable, and even stopped for us to buy grapes from the locals which were delicious. Highly recommend this tour!

Our tour guide was just awesome. His deep knowledge about history and culture and his dedication for his job and his travel guests made our trip an unforgettable event. Would like to give him again our special thanks for the Dacians. Anke & Rita

The tour was fantastic! Our guide was very knowledgeable and flexible, and a pleasure to travel with. We saw may gorgeous things together, from a river fortress to a medieval castle (complete with moat and dungeon), a beautiful very old church, and fascinating Roman ruins and museum. The region is incredibly rich in history and features jaw-dropping nature. Definitely a tour we would recommend!

The tour was very easy to book and extremely informative. In addition to providing a great overview of the city, our guide answered many questions and shared insightful information about the history, culture, modern-day living, and more — plus some excellent practical tips for our stay in Timisoara.

We booked a 1-Day tour to the Iron Gate starting in Temeswar. Our gide Alex was excellent. He drove the care very, very safe down to Orsova. Right there we had boat tour at Donube in a small tourist boat and got a fantastique impression of this part of the river. Afterwards we had been at a fishrestaurant at the Golf Dubovei and had a very good local fish. On the way back he introduced us Herculaneaum, which I would recommend everyone, visiting this area. Alex gave us all the time very useful background information about historical, political developments. In addition he explained us the nature and the region. We enjoyed every minute.

Best Things to Do and Day Trips in Timisoara

Timisoara is the third-largest city in Romania and an important cultural and economic hub. The city, which is also known as “Little Vienna” is the 2023 European Capital of Culture and for good reason: it boasts an eclectic cultural scene, terraces and cafes that can satisfy any taste, noteworthy landmarks and a wide-variety of entertaining activities. Go on a guided walking tour of Timisoara and you'll quickly see why!

One of Romania's major cities, the name originates from the river that passes through it, Bega, which was originally called Little Timis (Micul Timis). The Romanian word Timisoara and the German Temeschwar both stem from the Hungarian “Temesvár” which means castle (vár) on the river Timis (Temes). In fact, the city’s excellent academic institutions have attracted over 60,000 students from 50 different countries. The medical schools in particular appeal to a lot of international students.

But in order to understand how this city located in the western Romania reached its unique status in the country and why it should be your next stop, you need to know a few details about its rich history.

History of Timisoara

Historical evidence shows that this city was inhabited since ancient times but in the 13th century it was destroyed by Tatars and rebuilt during the reign of Charles I of Hungary when it also grew considerably. Stone walls were added to the fortress and he ordered the construction of a palace.

He had become king in 1307 but he was threatened by powerful enemies – mostly Hungarian nobles who didn’t think he should have the throne - so he moved the royal seat and administration from Buda to Temesvár between the years of 1315 and 1323.

This is where he resided during a period of intense conflict in which despite being coronated thrice, he was not acknowledged as king. In 1323, Charles had managed to take full possession of his kingdom and moved the capital to Visegrád, situated in the center.

The years he spent here allowed the town to expand and flourish and by the middle of the 14th century, Timisoara held an important strategic role in the struggle between Western Christianity and the Muslim Ottoman Turks. This city was attacked by Ottomans in 1462, 1476, 1491 and in 1522 it was finally conquered by Kara Ahmed Pasha with an army of 16,000. It then became a capital city in the region and stayed under Ottoman rule for almost 160 years. During this time, Timisoara was controlled by the sultan and had a special status similar to Budapest and Belgrade.

In 1716 it was conquered again by Prince Eugene of Savoy and came under Habsburg rule. Claudius Florimund Mercy was appointed governor and since the siege resulted in the city being burned down, it was rebuilt under his supervision. In 1723 a new stone fortress was erected and Timisoara continued to flourish. The inhabitants became more diverse as German, Italian and Spanish settlers were brought in. By 1781, Timisoara which was referred to Temeschburg became one of the most significant cities under the Habsburg Monarchy and was deemed a royal free city.

During the Austro-Turkish war of 1787-1791, it was captured in 1788 and looted in 1789.

As you may recall, the Revolutions of 1848 meant a threat to the Habsburg Empire which ruled over Austrians, Hungarians, Romanians, Slovenes, Czechs, Poles, Slovaks, Croats, Serbs, Ukranians and Italians. The Hungarian revolution was actually the longest in Europe and since Timisoara was under Habsburg rule it resulted in an unsuccessful siege of the city which lasted 114 days. Timisoara was even shortly the capital of the Serbian Vojvodina (autonomous Serbian province) as it was captured by Serbian Troops.

After the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, Timisoara became capital of Temes County and a period of modernization followed which included: introduction of telegraphy (1853), gas street lighting and a train line to Szeged (1857), horse-drawn trams (1867), electric street lights (first city in Europe, 1884) and electric trams (1899).

After World War I, Timisoara was given to the Kingdom of Romania through the Treaty of Trianon (4th of June 1920). During World War II, the city was damaged by bombing raids from both the Allies and the Axis powers since Romania fought on both sides at different stages of the war. The country lost much of the territory gained after WWI.

After World War II, Romania was occupied by the Soviet Union, King Michael was forced to abdicate and the People's Republic of Romania was proclaimed. Timisoara went through a period of Sovietization and Systematization, became highly industrialized and the population tripled.

The blend of diverse cultures still permeates Timisoara, serving as a testament to its impressive history. Today, when you take a leisurely stroll in Union Square, located in the heart of the city, you will hear locals conversing in various languages. This delightful mixture of cultures is an integral part of Timisoara's charm. And the local people are very welcoming. You'll likely have the opportunity to connect with a wonderful person in Timisoara, forming a lasting friendship.

But this isn’t why this great city holds such an important significance for Romanians.

In December of 1989 the Romanian Anticommunist Revolution started in Timisoara initially as a reaction to the government trying to evict Hungarian pastor László Tőkés who had spoken against the regime’s Systematization policy earlier that year. Parishioners gathered around his house to prevent the eviction but this attracted passers-by who were already disgruntled with the austerity measures imposed by Ceausescu and had heard of similar events in the neighboring countries.

The attempt at crushing the revolt by involving the army only made it gain strength and after three days of bloodshed, Timisoara became the first city to free itself from the Communist regime.

During this time, Ceausescu was in Iran and he returned on the 20th of December. On the 21st, he decided to give a speech in Bucharest, criticising the riots in Timisoara. This proved to be a huge mistake because the crowd gathered to hear his speech also started a protest and now the Revolution had spread to the capital. On a guided walking tour of Timisoara a guide can show you where these events happened and the few remaining bullet holes in buildings, serving as reminders of the Romanian revolution.

Timisoara, as the first place where the Revolution ignited, holds a crucial position in the modern history of Romania.

This is just a glimpse into Timisoara's complex history, intertwined with European history, which is why this city is more than just its beautiful places and main squares; it's also about a captivating way of life and its diverse people. A tour guide can provide a better understanding of everything Timisoara has to offer.

Architecture of Timisoara

Timisoara’s architecture serves as a reminder of important historical events that have left their mark on the city. One of the most important buildings is the Orthodox Cathedral which is part of the National Register of Historic Monuments and was built between 1936 and 1941 on an area of 1,542 square meters (16,600 square feet). It has 11 towers and reaches a height of 90 meters. The cupola is built in Moldavian Style which mixes Renaissance, Byzantine and Ottoman elements. The mosaic floors are inspired by rugs from the Banat region and the interior and exterior paintings were done by Anastase Demian over a stretch of many years since this coincided with WWII.

In Piata Unirii (Unirii Square) you’ll find St. George's Cathedral, a catholic dome-church built between 1736 and 1774. It was originally designed by Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach from Vienna and is the most valuable example of Baroque architecture in Timisoara. The interiors incorporate Rococo elements and were created by Viennese artists. Because of the cathedral’s great acoustic, numerous organ concerts are held here.

Timisoara has four theatres: "Mihai Eminescu" National Theatre, German State Theatre, Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre and Merlin Puppet Theatre. All of them are housed in beautiful, impressive old buildings worth visiting!

Some of the city’s museums are also located in landmark buildings. The Art Museum is in the Baroque Palace, the Banat Museum in the Huniade Castle (Timisoara’s oldest building), the Palace of the Serbian Episcopacy houses a museum of religious artifacts on the first floor and you’ll find plenty of other art galleries if you take a full day trip with a local guide. Moreover, if you are passionate about communism and its impact on Romania and Eastern Europe, then a visit to the Communist Consumer Museum is a must.

The styles of Art Nouveau in Timisoara are diverse, providing architecture enthusiasts with a sanctuary of impressive buildings, each with its own complex history and intriguing stories. That’s why Timisoara can also be considered a great place for a city break!

Here are some of Timisoara’s main attractions you should visit. This short list can serve you as a concise Timisoara travel guide:

  • Unirii Square

This is where you’ll find the Catholic Cathedral (St. George's Cathedral), the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral and the Baroque Palace. This should be your first stop while in Timisoara.

  • Piata Victoriei (Victory Square)

Known as Opera Square until 1990, this is where Timisoara was proclaimed the first free city on the 20th of December 1989. It’s very close to Unirii Square and you’ll be able to see three of the four theaters, the Romanian National Opera which shares the same building with the "Mihai Eminescu" National Theatre and lots of other art galleries and interesting boutiques. A visit of Victory Square (or Operei Square, if you prefer the old name) is a perfect place for a stroll and a good time.

  • Liberty Square

This is the second-oldest square within the former fortress of Timisoara. Here, you can discover the Military Museum (one of the oldest buildings in Timisoara), the Romanian Revolution Museum, and the Old City Hall building. Its name dates back to the Hungarian Revolution of 1848–1849 when the city withstood a siege by Hungarian revolutionaries.

In this lovely place, you can find a tourist tram that offers tours of the Old Center, which is surrounded by parks. The Roses Park and Central Park are the most popular ones. Alternatively, you can visit all these three large pedestrianized squares by simply taking a stroll down Alba Iulia Street, a great starting place for a full day tour.

Traveling to this beautiful city is incredibly convenient, thanks to its international airport. Timisoara Airport, fully known as Traian Vuia International Airport, is situated just a little over 11 kilometers from the city center, and it offers flights operated by companies like WizzAir, Lufthansa, Ryanair, and Tarom. From the airport, you can opt for a private transfer to the city center for around 10 euros.

If you're coming from Vienna, Budapest, or Belgrade, another great way to get to Timisoara is by train, thanks to its proximity to Central Europe. The best part is that the train station is located in the city centre.

Other things to Do in Timisoara

The best time to visit Timisoara is in the summer, as you can enjoy various events in this vibrant city. The warm weather allows for more extensive exploration of its attractions, including the opportunity to go on a scenic hike near the city.

  • Boat trip on Bega river

This 10 km boat ride is actually part of the public transportation system and the price of the ticket reflects it. It’s one of the best things you can do to relax and take in the scenery after a few hours of roaming through the city and visiting architectural landmarks.

  • Craft Beer Festival

This festival takes place in June and it celebrates the growing artisanal beer industry in the region, so if you’re interested in exploring some unique beer flavors (Hop Hooligans, Zăganu, Sikaru, Nemțeana, Berărescu etc.), trying some local street food and listening to live music, you might want to stop by.

  • Timisoara Jazz Festival

There are two other jazz festivals throughout the year, each lasting several days and you can listen to a mix of bands from all over the world at different venues

  • Plai Festival

Plai means land and this festival is meant to promote civic action and local NGOs. If you decide to attend, you’ll get to listen to live music, try local food, participate in a wide array of workshops and really experience the spirit of the city, particularly how urban culture mixes with folklore.

Day trips and attractions around Timisoara

Timisoara isn’t lacking in places to see and things to do but it would be a shame to not take the time and explore some of the tourist attractions located nearby. You can book day trips from Timisoara with local guides and visit some of the most amazing places around the city, especially if it’s your first time in Romania.

  • Corvin Castle

One of the best places you should visit while in Timisoara is the Corvin Castle. This medieval castle is about 200km (125 miles) away from Timisoara depending on which route you take. You might have seen parts of it in the horror movie “The Nun” where it’s presented as the Carta Monastery. The Carta Monastery is a real place in Romania, it’s just not where the movie was filmed.

Another departure from reality is that Corvin Castle is designed to look more like a fairy tale castle with multicolored roofs, a myriad of windows and balconies, strong walls, tall towers and an inner courtyard.

This imposing Gothic Castle is, in fact, among the largest in Europe and was built over an older fortification in 1446 under the orders of John Hunyadi (Iancu de Hunedoara). It was one of his most important properties and his intentions were to create an opulent home where he could hold ceremonies, formal receptions and feasts.

In the 17th century, further changes were made for both military and aesthetic purposes. In 1854, lightning caused a fire which burned most of the parts of the structure made from wood (roof, stairs, wooden beams, doors). This was followed by 10 years of neglect, so the current appearance of the castle is the result of a 40-year restoration process.

To visit Corvin Castle, you will need to cover the entrance fee of 40 lei for adults at your own expense.

  • the UNESCO Ruins of Dacian Fortresses

There are six Dacian fortresses in the Orastie Mountains which were built in the 1st century B.C to protect the capital Sarmizegetusa, against the threat of Roman conquest. They make use of the natural landscape, forming an intricate defense system. These fortresses played a critical role in the Roman-Dacian wars.

If you’re interested in history, you can take a full-day trip from Timisoara and visit the remains of these remarkable structures. They showcase ancient architectural techniques and military innovation.

  • Sarmizegetusa Regia

Sarmizegetusa Regia was the capital of the Dacian Kingdom and you might confuse it with Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa which isn’t far (40km). Your local guide will probably take you to both places. What happened was that the Romans destroyed the original Sarmizegetusa and added the name to a new city which was to become the capital of the Roman province of Dacia. As with the other Dacian fortresses, you can visit the ruins.

The archeological site is located in the village Grădiștea Muncelului, at a height of 1,200 meters for strategic reasons as this gave it visibility over the surrounding regions in case of an attack.

It’s made out of three main areas: the citadel, a zone for temples and sanctuaries and the civilian settlements situated below the citadel on artificial terraces.

Hiking trips from Timisoara

Sarmizegetusa Regia is really close to the Gradistea Muncelului-Cioclovina Nature Park, a protected area with stunning scenery, wild nature, and five hiking trails for tourists. One of the most beautiful and also the most popular is the trail from Sarmizegetusa Regia to the Godeanu Peak. The isolation and wilderness of the landscape will make you feel like you’re in a sort of wonderland. This area can provide a great time for tourists interested in outdoor activities.

Another popular hiking day trip from Timisoara is to Nera-Beusnita Natural Park where the Beusnita Waterfalls can be admired and also the famous Ochiul Beiului Lake (Devil's Eye) with is interesting crystal-clear turquoise water. The Nera Gorges offer a multitude of natural attractions, including caves, waterfalls, crystal-clear lakes with incredible colors, serene rivers, rugged cliffs, and lush glades, making it a great destination for nature lovers.

Bigar Waterfall is a famous attraction around Timisoara and a must see on a day trip. In 2021, part of the Bigar waterfall collapsed, but a visit here is still a good idea because the area's beauty can captivate any tourist.

Finally, the statue of King Decebal on the Danube is so popular it needs no introduction. What's more, reaching this colossal sculpture allows you to enjoy a scenic drive along the beautiful Danube Gorge. And if you want to see this beautiful landscape from above, a quick hike to Ciucaru Mare Peak will make your day.

If you're fascinated by the majestic Danube River, Romania offers an ideal opportunity to immerse yourself in its beauty. During your next visit, don't miss the chance to explore the Old Danube, nestled within the Danube meadow. This pristine haven is a vital migration corridor, providing sanctuary for numerous IUCN Red Listed bird species, making it a must-see destination for nature enthusiasts.

After seeing the statue, and if you have some free time to spare, consider going on a hike in the nearby Domogled-Cernei Natural Park. Cerna Valley is known for its beautiful mountains, stunning waterfalls, and the town of Baile Herculane, where you can experience some thermal baths.

Without a doubt, the most popular region in Romania is Transylvania, especially due to the legends that surround it, and the legend of Count Dracula holds a place of honor. However, Romania has more to offer, and Timisoara, located outside the southwestern part of Transylvania, is clear proof of the natural and cultural riches that Romania has to offer. After a visit to Timisoara, you might start planning your return trip to this beautiful country.

The Memorial picks 2024: Best bets for PGA Tour golf this week

By cody williams | jun 4, 2024, 11:59 am edt.

the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday

Few events on the PGA Tour schedule get the blood flowing quite like the Memorial Tournament. Jack Nicklaus' hosted event at Muirfield Village in Ohio is an immaculate setup that truly offers a great test every year, and this will be no exception with Scottie Scheffler headlining the 2024 field as the favorite with the likes of PGA champion Xander Schauffele and defending Memorial champion Viktor Hovland entering seemingly having found his form, among others.

Canada was none too kind to our best bets and expert picks and we're hoping that a change of scenery to Dublin, OH will help our Memorial picks. After all, it's hard to get more of a gut punch than two solid bets coming up a stroke short of hitting. Not to mention a collapse from Mac Meissner hurting us as well. But alas, we move forward.

These are our expert picks and best bets for the Memorial Tournament this week, and boy do we ever need a good week heading into the U.S. Open the following week.

Note:  All odds are courtesy of BetMGM unless otherwise noted. Game odds refresh periodically and are subject to change. For more betting picks and advice, check out BetSided . (BetMGM placement odds are not available as of initial writing and will be updated once populated.)

Golf betting record in 2024 through Canadian Open: 15-124-0, -38.93 Units (1-51 on outrights and longshots | -4.6 units at Canadian Open) | One and Done Total for 2024: $6,897,527 (Aaron Rai at Canadian Open, $152,750)

The Memorial Tournament expert picks: Winner, Top 10 and One and Done

Top 10 pick for the memorial tournament: keegan bradley (+333).

We need to appreciate both how well Keegan Bradley has been playing of late and, more importantly for this week, how well he should fit what we're going to see at the Memorial. Bradley comes in having finished T21 at Wells Fargo, T18 at the PGA and then T2 at the Charles Schwab in his last three starts. While his last two starts at Muirfield Village have been a T30 and T37 finish for Bradley, the form right now suggests better things coming. He's seventh in this field on SG: Approach over the last 20 rounds, Top 15 on approach from 175-225 yards, sixth in Par 5 scoring over the last 20 rounds, and has been a slight gainer with the putter over that span. Top 10 is aggressive but I love the way he could pop this week.

Winner pick for the Memorial Tournament (0.5 Units): Viktor Hovland (+1800)

Obviously, Viktor Hovland is the defending champion as he essentially started a torrid finish to his 2023 season at Muirfield Village. He was lost to start the season as he tried to make some swing changes but a reunion with Joe Mayo has yielded quick positive results. He was a middling T24 at Wells Fargo but then was in contention at the PGA Championship until the 72nd hole before finishing solo third. Hovland gained a little more than 10.5 strokes ball striking but also with his short game at the PGA. He's also best in this field over the last 20 rounds on approaches from 200-225 yards and fourth from 175-200 yards. The big concern would be his short game but the reunion with Mayo seemed to fix that instantly, so I'm buying in when Hovland's odds could be even shorter if he hadn't struggled earlier in the year.

One and Done pick for the Memorial Tournament: Viktor Hovland

Even if Hovland isn't holding the trophy for the second straight year, it's going to be a good week for him. It feels like he found the special sauce we saw at the end of last year and that makes him a perfect fit for Muirfield Village this week.

The Memorial picks: More best bets for PGA Tour this week

Si woo kim and billy horschel to finish top 30 at the memorial tournament (+200, draftkings).

Si Woo Kim has been stellar at the Memorial Tournament historically with no finish outside the Top 20 in his last four starts, including finishing solo fourth at this event last year. He's also sixth in SG: Approach over the last 12 rounds and third in Good Drive Percentage over the last 20 rounds in this field. So asking for a Top 30 isn't a huge task for him, nor is it for Billy Horschel. The 2022 champion at this event, Horschel has found his groove again of late. He comes in finishing T8 and T24 at the PGA and Charles Schwab, respectively. He's gained more than 3.0 strokes putting in each of those events but has also gained on approach. More importantly, he also has two more Top 15 finishes in his last five starts at the Memorial, so I love for him to get it done with a nice showing this week too.

Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Åberg and Patrick Cantlay Top 20 Parlay (+399, DraftKings)

When it comes to Morikawa and Cantlay, this is banking on their history at this course. They finished 1-2 at this event in 2021 while the latter is a multi-time winner at this event who also finished T3 in 2022. Morikawa has gotten things rolling again, so I have no worries. And while Cantlay has looked out of form, a place like this could awaken one of the most talented players in the world. As for Ludvig Åberg, the knee issue worries me. Having said that, the fit remains stellar. He's first in SG: Off-the-Tee, sixth in SG: Approach, first in putting on bentgrass, second on approach from 175-200 and 200-225 yards, and 10th in Par 5 scoring over the last 20 rounds. He could contend this week if the knee holds up but we'll play it somewhat safe in this Top 20 parlay.

Lee Hodges to finish Top 20 at the Memorial Tournament (+275)

I'm eyeing Lee Hodges as a huge sleeper this week. He finished T12 at the Memorial last year and comes in with a pair of T12 finishes and a T24 in his last three starts, including being Top 15 at the PGA Championship. Over the last 20 rounds, he's 17th in SG: Approach in this field and is 12th in SG: Putting over the last 16 rounds. It's not necessarily the perfect profile but his recent run of strong finishes combined with how he played the Memorial last week is enough to fully catch my eye.

Longshot pick to win the Memorial Tournament (0.1 Units): Lee Hodges (+22000, FanDuel)

If we're going to pick a longshot, let's go really long with Hodges. Look, it's a loaded field at the Memorial but everything I just said about Hodges suggests he could be live to make some noise this week. Getting him at 220/1 odds feels like a misprice that we have to sprinkle on in hopes of taking advantage of it.

Tesla is luring Chinese customers with the possibility of a free tour of its Fremont factory if they buy a car

  • Tesla is courting its Chinese customers aggressively.
  • Besides price cuts, the EV giant says it's holding a lucky draw for customers.
  • The company says it will fly winners to the US, where they will tour its Fremont factory.

Insider Today

Tesla is pulling out all the stops when it comes to courting Chinese consumers.

The EV giant said in a Weibo post on Sunday that Chinese customers who take delivery of their Teslas between May 25 and June 30 will stand a chance to win a factory tour in Fremont, California .

According to the company's poster, Tesla will cover the winner's air tickets, transportation costs, and insurance. In addition to the trip, Tesla said its customers could also win 10,000 kilometers in free mileage on the company's Supercharger network.

Related stories

The promotion comes just a day after it said customers could win a free two-day, one-night trip for two to Gigafactory Shanghai if they took a test drive in any Tesla store in China before June 30.

Tesla said the winners would be chosen via a lucky draw but didn't specify how many would be picked.

Representatives for Tesla didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from BI sent outside regular business hours.

The company's shift toward aggressive promotional tactics comes as it struggles with slowing sales and heightened competition in the Chinese market.

EV makers hoping to conquer the lucrative Chinese market have been locked in a brutal price war over market share.

In March, Chinese automaker BYD launched a cheaper version of its Yuan Plus car. BYD priced the vehicle at 120,000 yuan, about 12% cheaper than its predecessor .

In April, Tesla announced a 14,000 yuan or $1,930 price cut for its Model 3, S, X, and Y cars in China . The company also introduced similar price cuts in the US and Germany .

"Other cars change prices constantly and often by wide margins via dealer markups and manufacturer/dealer incentives," Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in an X post on April 21. "Tesla prices must change frequently in order to match production with demand."

Michigan Central Station tours: How to visit Ford's renovated train depot

timisoara free tours

You may have missed your first opportunity to visit the renovated Michigan Central Station , but there are still plenty of dates it will be open to the public.

The Michigan Central Open experience at the train station, located at 2001 15th St. in Detroit, is just getting started and will chug along through the summer, offering plenty of chances to experience Ford's transformation of the train depot.

Here's what to know.

Michigan Central Station initial public tours

The first 10 days of public open house tours at Michigan Central Station, running June 7-16, are sold out . Those visits required advanced registration that is now closed.

Guests will explore the first floor of the building during an immersive experience. There will be activations, storytelling, artwork and shareable moments.

If you got tickets to this set of tours, be sure to arrive 15 minutes before your entry time. Tickets allow visitors to access the station within 30 minutes of the ticket window. Guests should expect to be in the station for no more than one hour.

Can I tour Michigan Central Station if I didn't get tickets?

Don't worry if you missed out on the first set of tours running June 7-16; public tours of the train station will resume June 21 and will run Fridays and Saturdays through the end of August.

What's the cost for weekend Michigan Central Station tours?

No registration is required. People may visit the station from 5-9 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.

The building will be closed to tours on the other days of the week until September, when expanded public hours will be announced.

How do I get to Michigan Central Station?

Major events can drive plenty of traffic in the Corktown area. Several  roads will close  throughout the reopening event, but visitors can choose from nearby street parking, free parking in the 1501 Wabash St. garage on a first-come, first-served basis, riding the bus through the Detroit Department of Transportation, e-scooters or ridesharing.

What's next for Michigan Central Station after reopening?

After reopening festivities, Michigan Central will begin a "phased reactivation" of the train station for several months as restaurant, retail and other commercial and community-focused partners fill the space.
